Latest / Health with Hashimoto’s - Thyroid or Immune Education for Autoimmune Thyroid Disease / Why Knowing Your Hashimoto's Root Causes Is Not Enough ⎸ Root Cause Series Ep 206
Transcript
- 0:00You have done the research. You've listened to the podcasts,
- 0:02read the books, bought the supplements, tried the diets. You probably already
- 0:06know what your root causes are. You can list them all.
- 0:09Side note, if you don't know that yet, go down to the show notes and get Hashimoto's Decoded.
- 0:13But you still might not know what to do with all of that information when something
- 0:18new comes along. Maybe a friend recommends a practitioner, an ad appears for
- 0:22a new protocol, or somebody recommends a new supplement, and then you freeze.
- 0:27Knowing about root causes does not necessarily give you a filter.
- 0:31It just gives you more information to sort through. And that is the problem
- 0:35this episode is solving.
- 0:37Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition. That means your immune system is attacking
- 0:41your thyroid. But knowing that is only the beginning.
- 0:44This summer series is built in three phases. Phase one was understanding what's
- 0:49happening in your body. Phase two is learning how to think about what you're
- 0:52learning, and Phase 3 is building your own personal discernment framework with support.
- 0:58So most women with Hashimoto's have a lot of information, but what they're missing
- 1:03is a filter, a way to evaluate what applies to them specifically.
- 1:07That is what this series is now designed to give you.
- 1:10If you want to start with a foundation, check with the show notes for Hashimoto's
- 1:14Decoded, new name, Hashimoto's Decoded, Thyroid or Immune.
- 1:18In less than one hour, I will walk you through the most common root causes and
- 1:22help you identify where to focus.
- 1:24My name is Esther Yunkin. I'm a registered nurse, holistic health educator,
- 1:27and the host of this podcast, Health with Hashimoto's.
- 1:30I believe your health is a blend of five interconnected areas,
- 1:34body, mind, spirit, diet, and environment. Let's work through this together.
- 1:39So yes, there is a brand new name. In fact, I'm renaming a couple things in
- 1:44my offers because I just found out that there is a very well-known program,
- 1:49well-known person in the Hashimoto's space, and one of her programs has the exact same name.
- 1:54So I didn't want any confusion about whose work was whose.
- 1:57So I really dug down deep to figure out what am I actually teaching?
- 2:02And the answer I kept coming back to was deeper than root causes.
- 2:06I've been talking about root causes for a long time, but root causes are just the starting point.
- 2:11What I actually teach you comes after you understand your root causes.
- 2:15Obviously, I'm helping you understand your root causes. That is what Hashimoto's
- 2:19Decoded is all about, figuring out your personal root causes in less than an hour.
- 2:24But I also teach you how to think about your Hashimoto's so that you can evaluate
- 2:29anything and everything that comes your way. And that is discernment.
- 2:34And so the new name of the root cause reset is switching to Hashimoto's discernment
- 2:40coaching, because I want you to be able to have the ability to see if something is for you
- 2:46or not for you. And that is discernment.
- 2:50So discernment in this context of Hashimoto's means having a personal filter.
- 2:54It means knowing enough about your own body, knowing your root causes,
- 2:58knowing your patterns, knowing enough that you can evaluate any new information
- 3:03against a specific situation rather than general.
- 3:07Like, you know, a Facebook ad doesn't know you. You know you.
- 3:11So what does discernment look like in real life? Well, here are three different
- 3:14examples. The first one I feel like I encounter all the time.
- 3:19The social media algorithms, I just get fed protocols and supplements and parasite cleanses.
- 3:27You probably get this too. Whether it's a personal friend or whether it's an
- 3:31ad, you might see like a supplement. Like this is really good for you if you
- 3:36have Hashimoto's or if you have this symptom.
- 3:38Without discernment, you might feel guilty for not trying it or you might try it.
- 3:43But with discernment, you know, you absolutely know which of your root causes it addresses.
- 3:51You will know if it's relevant to your situation.
- 3:54And you could also figure out what questions to ask a practitioner if you have further concerns.
- 4:01Example two, a new diet. So I have a lot of episodes about diet.
- 4:06And you might, you know, talk to a friend, she says she's had Hashimoto's for a really long time.
- 4:11She went dairy free, and it reversed her symptoms.
- 4:15Without discernment, you might overhaul your diet, or you might dismiss the claim.
- 4:21With discernment, you know if dairy has shown up as a trigger for you specifically.
- 4:27Now, obviously, this is if you have gone through some sort of testing period,
- 4:32and we do that in my Hashimoto's Discernment Coaching.
- 4:37It's one of the phases we go through. And if you listened to the new AIP episode
- 4:44with Mickey Trescott. You learned about testing your diet with the autoimmune protocol.
- 4:52You have learned about that. With discernment, you can implement it.
- 4:57And you know when somebody's talking to you about a specific dietary protocol,
- 5:02you know if it will work for you or if it's something that you should experiment with.
- 5:09Let's not do this all or nothing thinking. Discernment is being very particular,
- 5:15if it's going to apply for you.
- 5:17Example three would be a flare-up. Now, I did an episode in,
- 5:21I think it was for the first 10 episodes, because I had no idea what somebody
- 5:25meant by a flare or a flare-up.
- 5:28And so I explained it back in those early episodes.
- 5:31A flare-up is some symptoms or maybe one symptom getting worse for you.
- 5:37So maybe your brain fatigue, your brain fog, your brain is just so tired it
- 5:41can't think, Maybe it's coming back after a really good stretch of clear and quick thinking.
- 5:48Without discernment, you might be scared. You might be confused.
- 5:53You might be just flabbergasted and worried.
- 5:57But with discernment, you can run through your own checklist.
- 6:00You can think through what's been going on for my sleep, my stress, my food.
- 6:04Where am I in my menstrual cycle? You're not guessing. You're investigating based on what you know.
- 6:12So the commonality in these three examples is not necessarily data.
- 6:16It's not necessarily knowledge.
- 6:18It's about how you apply that knowledge. It's knowing yourself well enough to
- 6:23ask the right questions.
- 6:25It's knowing your experiences, your past, your root causes enough to guide you
- 6:32to implement new things.
- 6:34That is discernment. Discernment is the ability to see if something is for you or not.
- 6:39The filter that kicks in when you get new information or, you know,
- 6:44somebody wants to help you with whatever helped them. Instead of guessing,
- 6:48you will know, is this actually going to help me?
- 6:51And now here's some nuance. I'm not saying that discernment is having a magic
- 6:54crystal ball where you can see
- 6:56the future and know exactly everything that will work or will not work.
- 7:00You're still going to have to do some experimenting on yourself,
- 7:03but discernment gives you a really good filter about knowing if something is
- 7:08worth investigating, worth trying or not.
- 7:10So I am pivoting the summer series a little bit, as you've probably noticed
- 7:14already from this episode, because I realized it's kind of silly for me to do
- 7:18a full episode on each root cause when I already go into depth on each root
- 7:23cause in Hashimoto's Decoded.
- 7:25Like it's already available for you.
- 7:27All you have to do is click the link and in less than an hour,
- 7:29you're going to get all of that information.
- 7:31So yeah, we're not going to do an episode on every single root cause,
- 7:36even though I said we were going to do that. I said we were going to do an episode
- 7:39on iodine, so maybe I guess I'll do that in the fall.
- 7:42But it's in Hashimoto's Decoded. So drop down to the show notes and you can
- 7:45click the link and go through Hashimoto's Decoded.
- 7:48Because I don't want to just give you a list to check off in the free podcast episodes.
- 7:55I want to give you the material for your own discernment framework.
- 8:00So each episode can add to your picture of what might be driving your symptoms.
- 8:07And that is the point of the episodes going forward.
- 8:10Not necessarily information accumulation, but pattern recognition for your specific situation.
- 8:17So I have two options for you depending on where you are.
- 8:21So option A is if you are still in the understanding phase, trying to figure
- 8:25out what is going on, what led to you being here, what is leading to your symptoms.
- 8:31Hashimoto's Decoded is the place to start if you are in this place.
- 8:36In Hashimoto's Decoded, you're going to figure out your root causes,
- 8:38you're going to figure out what's leading to your symptoms.
- 8:41Hashimoto's Decoded is foundational to pretty much everything we talk If you
- 8:47have already been through Hashimoto's Decoded, option B is for you.
- 8:51If you know your root causes, then let's figure out how to build that filter
- 8:56to get that discernment because,
- 8:59that will guide you, that will help
- 9:01you go through life figuring out if something is for you or not for you.
- 9:06So that coaching is six sessions designed to help you build the framework.
- 9:12Links to both of those, Hashimoto's Decoded and Hashimoto's Discernment Coaching,
