- 0:00We are back with another Boat Disciples podcast.
- 0:03Today we actually have 4 great guests, the first of which is a
- 0:08first time of all. Start with the first right?
- 0:12And what else is cool is this is our first time ever on a pod
- 0:16together. It really.
- 0:17Is that's why when you said we are back, I'm like we have not
- 0:20been here. We have not, no, no, but we're,
- 0:23we're down here in Mexico or no, I'm sorry, Texas, we're in,
- 0:26we're close to Mexico, but we're in Texas.
- 0:29We're hunting collared peckeries.
- 0:31Collared Peckeries, The American Peckery.
- 0:34It is a phenomenal critter pound for pound.
- 0:37Probably the toughest little thing I've ever shot at and
- 0:39missed a many of times on the script.
- 0:41I didn't even know a lot of boys and gals them them things are
- 0:44fast. Even while the arrows in the
- 0:46air, they're still fast. But it has been absolutely fun.
- 0:50Now we've had so many laughs. I don't even care if I I'm
- 0:53lying. I do care if I filled that last
- 0:55tag. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:57It's a wholesome. Feeling Oh yeah, I mean, the
- 0:59vibe has been spectacular. It's been super fun.
- 1:03And you, you mentioned the string jumps, right, Because
- 1:05we've all experienced some string jumps and we have them on
- 1:08camera. So it's like no bullshit, You
- 1:09can see it. Tell me what you think causes
- 1:13string jump for the most part. Do you think it's the sound of
- 1:16the bow, the sound of the arrow, the sound of both?
- 1:19Like what is, what do you? What's your synopsis of that?
- 1:22Initially, definitely the sound of the bow.
- 1:23That's why it's called the string jump.
- 1:25Those strings on the bow. Obviously I don't believe
- 1:29majority of the time it's going to be the sound of the arrow
- 1:31unless you just have some loud ass fletchings, which typically
- 1:34when you're shooting at 50-60 yards, even the shooter can hear
- 1:37it go down the range and they know hey, I need to change
- 1:40something. But I would say 95% of the time
- 1:43it's definitely just going to be the sound coming from the bow
- 1:46itself. What have you found is like your
- 1:48quietest vein that you've shot? I'm sure you've tested some
- 1:51different ones being that you have access to a bow shop.
- 1:54There's so many good ones out there right now.
- 1:56I'm a huge fan of the Tag Driver 2.2 fives.
- 1:59I will say they are probably not the quietest, but they're
- 2:01arguably the toughest in my opinion.
- 2:04They even being a lower profile fletching, they steer big bulky
- 2:08broadheads really good. In my experience, a lot of
- 2:11people have had really good success with the AE Max stealth
- 2:14sweep fletch. A lot of those.
- 2:17I know Josh has another brand that he's a big fan of and I've
- 2:19I've listened to his arrows. They're actually really quashed
- 2:22up. Filmed a many of shots for him
- 2:24this week and I don't think I've heard the arrow one time.
- 2:27Yeah, once he leaves the bow. Yeah.
- 2:29That's phenomenal. Yeah, no, I I think that the
- 2:31arrow is so important. I shot, I've shot Blazers for a
- 2:36long time, but Blazers are loud. So I'm actually switching over
- 2:39to the alpha by boning and it's a lot, lot quieter because it's
- 2:43lower profile. So that's been pretty cool.
- 2:46But you know, I think another factor of string jumps that gets
- 2:50discussed less, but I do believe is a thing is I think animals
- 2:55actually see the arrow as well. Because I like when you watch
- 2:58footy and the arrow gets 2/3 of the way and you see them start
- 3:01to duck and turn, I think oftentimes they catch it.
- 3:04It's like if we were to watch a family go by us right now,
- 3:07you're going to see it and flinch a little.
- 3:09But I don't know if there's a way other than run dull
- 3:14fletchings and maybe like dust your arrow so it doesn't shine
- 3:17to reduce the visual. So that's one of the reasons why
- 3:20I don't typically, not saying I'm against them, but that's one
- 3:23of the reasons why I don't typically run lighted knocks,
- 3:25especially if I know I'm going to be potentially taking the
- 3:27shot past 30 yards because I know for a fact, obviously
- 3:30that's like a train coming at the animal when they see that
- 3:32lighted knock on the back of the arrow, they can pick that up a
- 3:34lot sooner versus without 1. And that's also coming from a
- 3:37guy with white wraps and white fletchings.
- 3:41But at the same time, they're not glowing, right?
- 3:43Yeah. Right.
- 3:44But you think about it and like that's such a good point about
- 3:47the lit knock, but same with your white fletchings and white
- 3:50wrap. Like if you were to switch those
- 3:51to like black or, you know, like a matte green, you wonder if
- 3:55maybe that would make a little bit of a difference because
- 3:57those string jumps have been impressive.
- 3:59They had this. Also, if you go to a much duller
- 4:02coloration as far as fleshing at wraps it, it makes the shooter
- 4:06struggle to see their shot placement better.
- 4:07And hard to find your arrow. Yeah, Which nobody likes.
- 4:10And. Read The Blood.
- 4:11Yeah, all that stuff. So it's like I have.
- 4:13Learned on this trip if you just missed the damn thing all
- 4:15together, you don't have to worry about reading blood, so
- 4:17just grab your air going. Dude what's what's been like so
- 4:20far of the hunt camp? I think today is our 3rd, 4th
- 4:23day. What's been your favorite like
- 4:26highlight of the trip so far? We've had a lot of laughs, a lot
- 4:29of knee slappers, but what's been what's been the standout
- 4:32one for you so far? Godly.
- 4:35I don't know. I mean, there's I would really
- 4:38have to like go back and look at some footage.
- 4:39We had so many good laughs. I mean, probably when me and
- 4:45Josh got our pants, got caught with our pants down literally.
- 4:48Well, I took my pants down to show the analogy, but while we
- 4:53literally had have these running back and forth and we kept
- 4:55looking the wrong direction and they'd run across, as we look
- 4:58back, they'd run back the other way.
- 4:59It was just, dude, you're in a seesaw just going like this,
- 5:03dude, Yeah. It's so much fun.
- 5:04It's like they're everywhere, but we can't do anything about
- 5:06it. Dude and Javelina live in the
- 5:08thickest, nastiest stuff. That's what makes them so tough
- 5:11is like, unless they're in the open.
- 5:13That's what makes glassing them so hard is like you can only see
- 5:16them if they're in the right spot, so you got to look at the
- 5:19same terrain over and over and over till they're there.
- 5:21And that's what's nice about these roads and the high racking
- 5:24is when they're in the road they're not hard to see.
- 5:26But imagine trying to find them in the thick stuff bro.
- 5:29So going out on one heavy track, I look like I tried out for a
- 5:32roll and 50 Shades of grey, like there's stretch marks all over
- 5:35me. Like if I was married, there
- 5:37would be some suspicion when I got home.
- 5:39Zeezo Pete, there's I got I got AI.
- 5:41Just listened to this podcast and this dude was saying that in
- 5:452010 I think it was the top three books in sales was 50
- 5:51Shades of Grey 1-2 and three. They were the 1-2 and three
- 5:56highest. Selling books dude.
- 5:57Have you not seen the movies? No, but the books have pictures.
- 6:00I I never read them? If so, I might have to go pick.
- 6:03Up say, I would definitely go and look at it.
- 6:05In those cases, the movies are. Phenomenal.
- 6:07Were they also? I haven't.
- 6:08Seen. Both of them were good.
- 6:10Dude, next time you're mad at your old lady, go watch that and
- 6:12be in in separate rooms. You know, watch it separately
- 6:15and then come back. Meet in the kitchen, Yeah.
- 6:17All right, fine. I do have multiple TV's too, so
- 6:20that work, you know? Yeah, dude, it's just been fun
- 6:25hunting these peccaries. And I know you've been here once
- 6:27before. You're actually the one who kind
- 6:29of put this hunt together, which I'm unthankful for.
- 6:31You did a #1 the spots great, EJ and everyone here is awesome.
- 6:36The hunting's been great, but what made you want to come back?
- 6:40Because you've been on a lot of hunts.
- 6:42So sometimes it's like, you know, I liked it, but maybe I
- 6:44won't go back. And this one you told us all
- 6:46ahead of time, like, you know, this place is special.
- 6:49Can't wait to come. Like what made you get hooked in
- 6:51to come back? Like, like you said what I said
- 6:55it, it is special. And until you experience this
- 6:57place, I mean, a lot of people know EJA.
- 7:00Lot of people know that he's well, I said a lot of people
- 7:03don't realize he's actually a biologist.
- 7:05He's smarter than he looks. But a lot of people also don't
- 7:07realize he's probably, he's probably got more kills behind
- 7:12the prime both than anybody else in the world.
- 7:14And that's not an exaggeration. People don't realize how good of
- 7:16a hunter he is. People don't realize what kind
- 7:19of vibe he brings because when you meet him, you're like, yeah,
- 7:21he's probably like an everyday hunter like the rest of us.
- 7:24And then you start looking at his world records.
- 7:26You're like, oh, no, we're not the same.
- 7:27No, no, no, we're not the same. Oh, yeah.
- 7:29But the, the fact that you, you know, this place doesn't have an
- 7:32address. Like, I wanted to send my energy
- 7:35drinks here to drink them. I I couldn't like unless my hair
- 7:38dropped in by a drunk but. It'll fly it over here.
- 7:41Yeah, obviously y'all have experienced and that's why I was
- 7:43telling y'all, you know, that this place is special.
- 7:45But you know, until you come here, see the layout, see what
- 7:48it has to offer, feel the vibe, it, you really can't explain it
- 7:51until you're actually here and experience it.
- 7:54Dude that's dope. I think that's really well said
- 7:57and EJ is a phenomenal hunter dude.
- 7:59I really like watching him do his thing because I can tell
- 8:03that he's so good and obviously mega accomplished.
- 8:07His Instagram is what Pura bura. Bura, bura.
- 8:10Yeah, go shoot him a follow if you haven't, because his his
- 8:12contents really good and man has he had some hammers of like so
- 8:16many different species. He's got so many stuff that
- 8:18there's so much stuff that I'm like, what?
- 8:19I don't even know what it is. And he'll mess to be like, oh,
- 8:21Kazakhstan, I'm like, I didn't know you get a license out,
- 8:24dude. And the way I describe EJ is,
- 8:26you know, I'm a hunter. I describe him as a killer.
- 8:29Yeah, right. He's good.
- 8:31He's. A freaking monster.
- 8:32So all right, what is your favorite animal of all time to
- 8:37hunt? Small game, big game, doesn't
- 8:41matter. Well, here, here's the thing.
- 8:43And I guess I'm a little weird because one, I haven't haunted
- 8:45that many different species of animals, but I've always said I
- 8:49will hunt just about anything, but I won't hunt with anyone.
- 8:53That's why I invited this particular group here because,
- 8:56you know, I knew we were going to have a good time.
- 8:58Otherwise I would have said, hey, take time, time out of your
- 9:00daily schedule and all that shit to come out here.
- 9:03But you know, when I invite some people, that means I like them.
- 9:07I want to be around them. I know it's going to be a good
- 9:09time. I know we're going to vibe off
- 9:10each other And on top of that, all the other shit we get to
- 9:12shoot at is a bonus. So once again, I'll go hunting
- 9:15any with, I'll go hunt anything, but I won't go hunting with
- 9:18anyone because I believe you can always have a good time even if
- 9:21it's not a successful hunt. But once again, I mean, I think
- 9:26even though we've had successful hunts here, we're having a good
- 9:28time regardless. Totally.
- 9:30Regardless, yeah dude, that is a freaking good way to put it.
- 9:33All right, pal. Hey, it's been a pleasure, Sir.
- 9:37Thanks for everything, and we'll get our next guy in the game.
- 9:45Got to reset my timer here as I do have one on deck.
- 9:49Lovely I. Mean you're just going to.
- 9:53Cut this. No, leave it running.
- 9:54No, I'm not organic. No, he's an organic boy all.
- 9:58Right. Southern California boy, he's
- 10:00organic. Shout out to shout out to Socal
- 10:04dude, appreciate. All the positive words from
- 10:06Scotty, but I immediately have to contradict something he said.
- 10:09OK, right when I walked out here I went, no, they don't see your
- 10:13lighted knock. It's a 180 from them.
- 10:15There's no way they see your lighted knock.
- 10:17They can't. The arrow's in the way now.
- 10:19The Fletchings, yes, sure, I can see that, but they're not seeing
- 10:22your lighted knock. You don't think there's an orb?
- 10:24No, I do not. I don't think they can see it.
- 10:27I can see him talking to Brandon.
- 10:29That's fantastic. Yeah, I disagree with that.
- 10:31Everything else he said 100%. I don't agree with that.
- 10:34I don't think they see your lighted knock.
- 10:35Yeah, yeah, who know, I mean it would be something that would be
- 10:38pretty easy to see is just get film a shot getting from the
- 10:41front dish and see. But what do you think?
- 10:45Do you think that the point of the animals reacting can be from
- 10:49seeing I? Think they hear your bow go off
- 10:51and then I think they hear it coming.
- 10:52Yeah, you don't think they see it?
- 10:55They could, but I don't necessarily think they see it.
- 10:57I think there's a possibility they see it, but I don't.
- 10:59I wouldn't guarantee it. I can guarantee they hear it.
- 11:01There's no way they don't hear it because you can see the
- 11:04initial reaction from hearing the noise, and then you see a
- 11:06more pronounced reaction from as the arrow gets closer.
- 11:10And you can prove that easier by watching a group of six and only
- 11:14one of them traditionally reacts every once in a while. 2 will,
- 11:17maybe 3 will, but they're not all reacting.
- 11:19Now why is that? Well, I would assume that the
- 11:22sound is traveling more directly at the one that does react.
- 11:26Which would implicate that it's sound.
- 11:28Yeah. And I I agree.
- 11:29I think, I think it is. I think sound is the primary
- 11:32factor. Yeah, I think sound gets alerted
- 11:34before visual does. I think visuals like dumb luck
- 11:37if anything. Yeah, I mean, it's it's, it's
- 11:40hard to see a fastball coming at you, right?
- 11:44That was it. How?
- 11:45How far is it from the pitcher's mound to the?
- 11:4760 feet 6 inches. So you're talking 20 yards. 60
- 11:52feet is not 20 yards. That's like 16 yards.
- 11:55Yeah, it is 20 yards, I think. No. 90 feet is 20 yards.
- 11:59It's three feet, No. 60 OH. Sorry, my, I'm not about 30
- 12:03yards. Thank you.
- 12:05Oh, yeah, it's 20 yards. Yeah.
- 12:06And you can barely see that coming, right?
- 12:08Multiply that by three, right. Do you really?
- 12:10You think you're seeing it? I think so.
- 12:12I I do believe it and just from watching footage that I've
- 12:14watched watch, but again, I'm not a scientist.
- 12:17I just well, neither am I yeah, but but nonetheless, I think
- 12:20that it's an interesting topic that really pertains to this
- 12:24hunt and folks will see it when they see all of our various
- 12:27videos because there was a lot of string jumps out here.
- 12:29So it's just about, you know, obviously getting closer is good
- 12:33and and blah, blah, blah. But what has your thought been?
- 12:36Because I know you've you've shot a peccary before, but what
- 12:39what like how how have you liked high racking them and going out
- 12:43on these stocks like if you. I got to be honest, this is
- 12:45probably the funnest thing I think I've done.
- 12:47And it's the funnest thing for a couple of reasons.
- 12:49One, you're all sitting together.
- 12:51Oh yeah. Where you're looking for an
- 12:52opportunity. You don't get that.
- 12:54Traditionally you get 1 here, one there, one there, right?
- 12:56Or there's two of you together, maybe 3 of you together.
- 12:59The likelihood of all you being able to sit together and
- 13:01bullshit while you're going to from the thing to the thing to
- 13:03The thing is rare. Yeah, that parts really cool.
- 13:06And you literally get to watch the other guys hunt.
- 13:09Like some of the some of the coolest experiences I've had on
- 13:12this is watching somebody else shoot something for sure.
- 13:14Like you don't get to see that traditionally.
- 13:15It's not normal. Yeah.
- 13:17So this is a this is a very unique thing overall that I
- 13:20don't think you can really duplicate.
- 13:22So I really would like to thank Scotty very much for inviting us
- 13:27on this because this is a great time, this is an amazing place.
- 13:30To the place. Like it's sick.
- 13:32The trophy room is so nice. The food's been great.
- 13:35And like, I mean, everything about it's been awesome.
- 13:38Even seeing animals, we're not hunting, you know, seeing deer,
- 13:41seeing horses, seeing cattle. Seeing horses that I thought was
- 13:44no, yeah. That was hilarious.
- 13:46Turtles. Not like, yeah, it's amazing
- 13:48stuff. It's just cool.
- 13:50We're being relatively, we're being relatively disciplined on
- 13:55our pops, wouldn't you say? For me and you, I don't know
- 13:57they. Already had to go back to the
- 13:58store. All right, all right, hit me
- 14:02with this. Hit me with this.
- 14:04Get it? Give me from 3rd place to 1st
- 14:06place your favorite light beers. 3rd to 1st.
- 14:13I know that's a hard hitting question.
- 14:14Culture would be third, OK Miller Lite would be second and
- 14:18Keystone Lite would be first. OK, And I know that's cringy,
- 14:22but I grew up with. That I do not think that's an.
- 14:24Adlet it's keystone lights, a hidden gem and I don't really
- 14:28want to put that out in the world because I like going to
- 14:30the store and still finding it and the rack not being empty
- 14:33it's. Relatively cheap, Yep.
- 14:34It's one of the cheapest things you can buy.
- 14:36It's right there with Bush light and keystone light.
- 14:38Yep. But like Coors Light ass.
- 14:41Yeah, it's the more expensive keystone light.
- 14:43I don't get it. It's the can or something.
- 14:44It's not as good. So different your list.
- 14:47I think honestly a very pro ranking.
- 14:49I would probably go almost the same.
- 14:52I would just definitely swap Keystone for Bush and I might
- 14:55change the order a little bit, but they would be the same top
- 14:58three for me pretty much. That's a pro list.
- 15:01So if you got a. Miller Lite to me would probably
- 15:03be maybe numeral Uno so. Are you are you ditching
- 15:06Keystone light all together in that list?
- 15:07I would swap it for Bush. OK, so you'd get rid of it all
- 15:10together? Yeah.
- 15:11For Bush, but again for me it would probably slot like right
- 15:13there, 4th or 5th. Yeah, and you might wear dresses
- 15:16in Great Mop. You never know.
- 15:17Who knows? Who knows?
- 15:18Life is, but a is. A low key joke.
- 15:21Life is but a dream. But all right.
- 15:25Well, I think that is a pro ranking.
- 15:28What have you learned on this hunt that you maybe have not on
- 15:33another hunt? Like what was something that you
- 15:34didn't expect to learn, but maybe coming home you're going
- 15:37to go? You know what that was?
- 15:38I'm going to keep that in the memory bank.
- 15:42That I don't think anybody accurately shows the vitals on a
- 15:45javelina. Like you.
- 15:47Like, look it up online. Yeah.
- 15:49You're like, where I, I want to cut one of these things open so
- 15:52bad. Like, explain to me where the
- 15:53lungs and the heart are because apparently they're not anywhere
- 15:56where you would see it. Yeah, it's wild.
- 15:58Like, you got to shoot them way far forward, which is very true
- 16:01for most African animals, which I know they're not an African
- 16:03animal, but in general, that's that you you hug the shoulder up
- 16:06way more than you would think. But it still doesn't, like,
- 16:09compute when I'm looking at it. Doesn't quite add up.
- 16:12Yeah, they are. They are unique to hit as far as
- 16:14like back to front but also height wise because they have
- 16:19such long hair on their back. It's sort of like a Turkey when
- 16:22they're strutting. Yeah, it's if they're, you know,
- 16:24if they're quilled up, though if they're not, it's not, it's.
- 16:27Yeah, it's not much. Yeah.
- 16:28But if they are puffed up, it's like, you know, shooting a
- 16:31Turkey and you really got to like focus on that drumstick and
- 16:34get up in there. But the shop in Nashville, the
- 16:38pod, all that's doing really, really good.
- 16:42Very blessed. Yeah, it's been really, really
- 16:44cool to watch. What is do you have any,
- 16:46anything super exciting coming up?
- 16:49We don't necessarily need any leaks unless you want to provide
- 16:52them, but what are you excited about?
- 16:54We should be pulling Broadhead testing this year and I'm I'm in
- 16:57negotiations for a house down there so I can have a home base
- 17:01and set up some more testing stuff.
- 17:03I've started filming in Nashville because I'm there half
- 17:06the time and it was really running out of enough time to be
- 17:09able to make the content that I needed to make to keep up the
- 17:11pace that I have. And I'm, I'm really hoping to
- 17:15start doing broadhead testing in the next month to two months
- 17:17somewhere around there and start putting out some pretty cool
- 17:20visuals, the slow MO's and whatnot to give you a better
- 17:24visual of what's actually going on, you know, and be able to
- 17:27test some things and give them a ranking.
- 17:28And hopefully overtime that ranking gets adopted into the
- 17:31end of the industry to where you can as a consumer can go, OK,
- 17:35well, I'm going to shoot this big of an animal with this much
- 17:37poundage and this much air weight.
- 17:39What broadheads should I stay with and what should I stay away
- 17:42from? Because there's not really
- 17:43anything like that. You know, there's so much debate
- 17:45back and forth of, you know, do I shoot a mega meat?
- 17:48Do I shoot a dead meat? Do I shoot a beast?
- 17:50Do I shoot a severed? Do I shoot a iron will?
- 17:53Do I shoot a this or that? And there should be some kind of
- 17:55a gauge of metric that, hey, from this line, this direction,
- 17:59use that. From this line, that direction,
- 18:01use the other. And I mean, even even people
- 18:04that are really big advocates for those big ass mechanical
- 18:07broadheads will stop using them when the animal gets to a
- 18:09certain size. Where's the line at for the
- 18:11average person? And that's my goal overall.
- 18:14The testing is to be able to create one.
- 18:16Yeah. Say, look, here's kind of where
- 18:17you should stop using this and start using that based off of
- 18:20what you're hunting. I think that's awesome because
- 18:23you're you're absolutely right. Like the old phrase, there's
- 18:27multiple ways to skin a cat. That's especially true when
- 18:30you're hunting stuff of different shapes and sizes and
- 18:33durability on the animal. Plus every shooter is also
- 18:37different. Like Brianna setup is going to
- 18:39have to look different than mine and mine's going to have to look
- 18:42different than someone like Bomar or Cam.
- 18:45So I think that a chart like that that's like not this one is
- 18:48trash and the this one's great. It's like no, this one here is
- 18:52good for XY and this one's good for Z.
- 18:56Well, that's a cool way to do. It and all you got to do is
- 18:58collate that back to KE, right? Because kinetic energy is based
- 19:01off velocity and how much airway you have and how fast it's
- 19:04sleeping the bow, you get those measurables, right?
- 19:07So if you have the KE, you know where the line can be drawn and
- 19:10say just measure your velocity and go off your physical air
- 19:13weight to the KE equation and you'll know where you should
- 19:16draw the line at for what animal.
- 19:17That's the goal. Now let me ask you this, yeah,
- 19:21not brand, but what is your favorite?
- 19:24Like let's just say for for deer, elk and peccaries and
- 19:29turkeys like that type of animal size and range.
- 19:34What is your favorite type of broadhead?
- 19:37Like is it A and what I mean by that is like a fixed or three
- 19:40blade A4 blade, A2 blade like. I honestly I like mechanicals
- 19:45period. Like I think there's mechanical
- 19:47advantage to them in general. I don't know if there's there's
- 19:50very few animals that walk the earth that I wouldn't shoot a
- 19:53mechanical at. It's how big of the mechanical
- 19:55would be would be based off of that.
- 19:57So if I'm shooting like an elk or larger animal, I wouldn't use
- 19:59a mechanical with more than an inch and a half cut.
- 20:01And I know that's probably a bit of a a little bit of thing.
- 20:05Well, Brandon up in Sir. It's been a pleasure.
- 20:07Thank you. Absolutely.
- 20:09Thank you, Sir. Oh, my goodness.
- 20:13This guy's coming in crazy right now.
- 20:16Dude, does someone want to go get Ty in the on deck circle?
- 20:20He's asleep. Is he sleeping?
- 20:22Oh, my God, that's probably the best guy to have last.
- 20:27All right. Well, Sir.
- 20:31Team tagged out. Sir tagged out.
- 20:34Let me do a tiny little. I don't do a small, you know, I
- 20:36don't do hard liquor, but I'll do one tiny pull for.
- 20:38That, I mean, I'm being a little bit dramatic with what I'm doing
- 20:41right now. We got Weller, which is a very.
- 20:44OK, that would I say that was a bitch sip.
- 20:46That was the biggest bitch sip ever, but we're keeping it right
- 20:49there. All right, so.
- 20:51Did you hear the? Is that for me, Poppy?
- 20:54Do you want one? I don't know.
- 20:55You tell me, do I won't. Go.
- 20:57These are sweet. So they're kind of nice.
- 20:58OK all. Right.
- 20:59Do you have a lighter right here?
- 21:00I do All right, so you, I want to I want to pick up where he
- 21:03left off. I'm just talking style like he
- 21:07said, he likes a mechanical of sorts.
- 21:09I want to take it a step further.
- 21:10Like do you like a multiple blade expandable A2 blade, A2
- 21:15blade with a leading edge like or is that even your favorite?
- 21:18Maybe you like iron wheels? Like what do you like?
- 21:22No. And I'm not saying this because
- 21:25you have a deal with beast, but I think the balance that beast
- 21:29achieves because it's a it's a mechanical that I wish was a
- 21:34three blade. But when you're making
- 21:36sacrifices, I think that the increase in penetration that you
- 21:39get, if it's hitting hard stuff, being able to collapse back down
- 21:42and then expand back out, as long as it functions properly, I
- 21:45think is like probably the best overall broadhead in existence
- 21:49right now. As long as you get one that's
- 21:52solid and rocking and rolling. So your favorite type though you
- 21:55just said alluding to would be a three blade 3.
- 21:59Blade that would fold down. Got it.
- 22:00That was probably A2 inch total cut.
- 22:04Yeah. But the blades are truly
- 22:07balanced. Yeah.
- 22:07So that if you're hitting like you could shoot it at an elk
- 22:10because you're going to be able to collapse a blade and, and
- 22:13continue going forward. Yeah.
- 22:14I don't like, like, no offense to, you know, some of the other
- 22:18brands where they're like, hey, our blades will move out of the
- 22:21way and you're like, no, they're not going to like, if if it's
- 22:24counterbalancing something else, it's going 200 miles an hour.
- 22:26It's a car crash that's smashing into the side of a, you know, of
- 22:31bones and meat and all that stuff.
- 22:33So it doesn't, it doesn't make sense to me that like anything
- 22:35other than them just going completely back because you're
- 22:38you're playing into the physics of something going going this
- 22:43way. If it can collapse dead back,
- 22:45not left and right and doing all that stuff just come straight
- 22:47back and then come back out. I think that's best case
- 22:50scenario. But I do wish it was 3 blade.
- 22:51OK, Hey, can we, can I, can I, can I ask you a question?
- 22:56Of course. So.
- 22:57You and I, yeah, we have. We did wonderful executions on
- 23:02filling our tags, and I want to hear what we did differently
- 23:06than some of the other guys that are schmoes that have not filled
- 23:09up that jet. So how do you properly peckery
- 23:11hunt so that everybody who's sitting behind cameras can
- 23:13listen? Well, I'll tell you the truth, I
- 23:16think that this trip just because the energy of hunting
- 23:19with a group of guys, everyone in my opinion goes way too fast.
- 23:23And like if the speed I went, I was actually going fast because.
- 23:33If you don't want it, I want the rest of it so I don't waste it.
- 23:36Like in my dream scenario, if like, let's say I was out here
- 23:40hunting a peccary by myself, my stalks would have taken three
- 23:42times as long. OK, Does that make sense?
- 23:45Yeah. So OK, but where are you
- 23:46starting to slow down? The whole way, because my thing
- 23:49is I always say this when you're stalking a deer, a javelina, a
- 23:52pig, whatever animal you're spot stalking elk, they are generally
- 23:57not. They're not just going to dip
- 23:59out most of the time they're either going to leave because
- 24:01you spooked them or you've gotten close enough and shoot
- 24:04them and then they spook. So I think a lot of folks,
- 24:07especially in spot and stock style hunting, they go, oh, I
- 24:10need to get over there right now or they're going to be gone.
- 24:12And that happens maybe 5 out of 100 times.
- 24:15And if so, you just keep it moving.
- 24:17You know, so for me to answer the question it would be just
- 24:22slower is definitely better. The other thing that's been
- 24:25interesting about about these in particular is you'll have random
- 24:29ones that pop up because let's say you're 200 yards away, there
- 24:33can be a group that you don't see at 70 that's over in the
- 24:36thick stuff that then moves out. 100%.
- 24:38So that makes that makes a lot of sense to me.
- 24:41We. Always call it too.
- 24:42My dad always taught me this as a kid because I grew up hunting
- 24:44javelina and I still do now. But he always taught me this
- 24:49phrase of always keep your head on a swivel when you're within
- 24:52like 200 yards of the group. Because just because you blast
- 24:56three over there, but there could be like 5 or 6 of them in
- 24:59a pucker Bush right here. And if your heads not on a
- 25:02swivel, you're going to get that.
- 25:04And then before you know what, the whole group's gone.
- 25:07So, and it's all because you just weren't doing scanning.
- 25:11That makes sense. And it does make sense that you
- 25:13could almost any animal spot in stocking that that's kind of the
- 25:16way that you would want to go so you don't feel like you're
- 25:18wasting time by going slow. Not at all.
- 25:21Okay. No, I feel like that the net
- 25:22result is that you actually kill more animals by doing that.
- 25:25Not even. Not even it's not a debate like
- 25:28100%. I have stocked individual deer
- 25:32for like 8 / 8 hours, one especially.
- 25:35Like a mule. Right.
- 25:35Yeah, I've spent at least 8 hours on a mule deer stock
- 25:38before. Yeah.
- 25:40And the deer never moved. It was bedded the whole time.
- 25:42But I had to take the time to wait for the wind to wait for
- 25:45certain stuff to develop. And then when I'm actually
- 25:47moving, when I say slow, I'm probably covering 100 yards in
- 25:52like an hour. Would you do that on peccaries
- 25:55or would you go faster? I would because I don't see a
- 25:56rush. OK, you know what I mean?
- 25:58And like, there's there's no reason for me to rush.
- 26:02OK. And then shot placement on one
- 26:05right now, are you taking like a quartering 2 shot on one?
- 26:08I'd rather hit them perfectly broadside or slightly quartered
- 26:11away. But to me, the best spot to hit
- 26:14them is like basically just like if you take the elbow and just
- 26:18go about up, up to and left one or two inch, I think that's like
- 26:23the perfect spot. So.
- 26:24Very low, the left you're going, you're going straight up like
- 26:28and then to the left. No, right.
- 26:30I would go right like one or two and up one or two.
- 26:32So based on the the I looked at a picture of the javelina
- 26:36vitals. You're that's a hard shot if
- 26:37that's where exactly, But then if he's ducking, you're into
- 26:41lungs. Yeah.
- 26:42So I would hope, but then I. Think what we've seen on this
- 26:44trip is traditionally the misses have been back.
- 26:47Yes, because they skitter. And turn to.
- 26:49Freaking duck and then they push out like.
- 26:51Yeah, their, their, their rear goes down and then they move
- 26:54forward and they pull ass. They're fast, dude.
- 26:56Dude this is like so my sons 2 1/2 whatever two my wifes can.
- 27:00If I call him 2 1/2, my wife would get angry.
- 27:04I want to bring him Javelina hunting because it's so fun.
- 27:07It's so fun. You get to go.
- 27:08You get to learn all these different ways to do stocks.
- 27:11Like you get so much action. And then the consequences of,
- 27:14you know, like consequences of an A total air ball are just
- 27:17sick. There's another group up there,
- 27:18another 200 yards. Just keep going.
- 27:20I, I I've had so much fun, dude, so much fun.
- 27:23We always have called javelina like the bow hunters dream, you
- 27:26know, and and hunting them like this, a little bit different
- 27:28than like, you know, out in the mountains or something, But like
- 27:31either, either way, the experience you gain as a bow
- 27:34hunter hunting them, bro, you can get it's it's hard to it's
- 27:39hard to replace with anything else, because if you take
- 27:42someone who's never spot in stock bow hunt and you go say,
- 27:44take them to the hills of New Mexico and glass up a Coos deer
- 27:47and say, hey, go stock them, bro.
- 27:49They're not even going to get in the same stratosphere of the
- 27:52deer. But if you've done it with 10
- 27:54Javelina spot in stock at least now, maybe you'll like.
- 27:57Have. A tiny shot.
- 28:00You know what I mean. Tiny.
- 28:00Shot I don't think you go from Havoline to the coup.
- 28:03No, but like you, you know what I mean by the example.
- 28:05It's just like a lot of good practice on the reps.
- 28:08Yeah, and that's what I'll say about South Africa is when I
- 28:12went over there, dude, you're getting like 3 or 4 stalks a
- 28:18day. So dude if you want to just go
- 28:20get a crash course and how to get proficient at spot and stock
- 28:24hunting bro you can't beat it the other.
- 28:26Cool thing about doing something like Africa is you can go in the
- 28:29morning, let's say spot and stock a bunch of stuff and then
- 28:33they'll stick you on water and in a blind.
- 28:36So like if you're not successful but you learned a bunch of
- 28:39stuff, you're probably still going to get action and get
- 28:40animals 100%. Kind of the traditional, more
- 28:43like whitetail, you know, whitetail way in a blind.
- 28:45Just like in Mexico, you knew I wanted to bring my glass and
- 28:48gear and just spot and stock. But when the outfitter tells you
- 28:50like, oh, it's impossible. It's like, I know it's possible,
- 28:53but at the same time it's like I want to respect them.
- 28:55And then year 2, they said if you come back, you can do it
- 28:58however you want, but you have to like they got, they got to
- 29:02know you first because like, they don't want someone just
- 29:04spooking a deer from 300 yards. Like, you know, I get, I get
- 29:07both sides from an Outfitters perspective.
- 29:10This country here is thicker, I feel like, than what we were
- 29:13hunting in Sonora. Like yeah, do you not think?
- 29:16I think it's pretty comparable depending where, maybe slightly
- 29:19thicker. I just feel like everywhere we
- 29:21get into like right when you get off the road, like you're
- 29:23literally just crawling on your hands and knees through
- 29:25everything. Try to go through these little
- 29:26rat holes chasing these. Little rat holes.
- 29:28Yeah, that's like, that's such a good way to put it, dude.
- 29:31They love to live in mine shafts and culverts like they live in
- 29:34nasty pipes, tubes, tubes. But hey pal, we got 37 seconds
- 29:40left are. You going to smoke that or
- 29:42you're going to just. I've been smoking it, Boo.
- 29:44OK. All right.
- 29:46Hey, thanks. I'm holding it.
- 29:47Cool. Thanks.
- 29:47For having me on the boat is Happy podcast.
- 29:48Thank you. I felt like I was on your
- 29:50podcast. It kind of turned into an oppo
- 29:52thing, but I still liked it. All right, we got the last, the
- 29:57last guy. Unless I can get EJ to come on.
- 30:01You know you don't want. That no, actually he's not Mr.
- 30:06Thai. Might as well go from a NAB.
- 30:07How we doing, bro? Feel rejuvenated.
- 30:10Yeah. 1. So our first hunt together ever.
- 30:16We've shot what? One event together?
- 30:19Boat disciples challenge. I think that's it, right?
- 30:21Unless I'm forgetting something. No.
- 30:22And Utah tack. I think we met briefly.
- 30:25How has it been to share Hunt Camp and just kind of get the
- 30:28vibe and. It's been fun.
- 30:30We've been going from the RIP. Yeah.
- 30:32So just the guys hanging out. Guys, we we put a little stock
- 30:36on day one together. Yeah, got the job done.
- 30:40But yeah, we've just been kicking it.
- 30:43Yeah. It's like the guys being guys
- 30:46shooting bows, hanging out, telling stories, having a good
- 30:50time. Dude, that's freaking perfect.
- 30:53Tell me about So you had a mule deer tag this year and one of
- 30:56the most sought after units in the United States.
- 31:01You don't have to say what unit we don't want to spot burn, but
- 31:03like a very, very top shelf unit.
- 31:05And you also had Travis, who filmed my stuff in South Africa
- 31:10come over and film you. What was that experience like to
- 31:13hunt such elite country and then also to meet Travis and have him
- 31:17for your shoulder? It was pretty cool.
- 31:20I mean, I don't really think it's spot burning, but it was
- 31:22the Poncegon. Yeah.
- 31:23Like it? Yeah.
- 31:23You can't draw it anyway. Yeah, you have to draw it or pay
- 31:25a ton of money for it. And I somehow drew it.
- 31:30Hunting that area was insane. Like it was there was just deer
- 31:34everywhere. There was one day where we saw
- 31:35like 145 or something mule deer and an evening.
- 31:39Not even just the whole day, just like an evening.
- 31:41Wow. So it was, it was really cool
- 31:44and special to get to hunt that. But what was even more cool was
- 31:47getting to meet up with Travis. So Travis flew in from South
- 31:50Africa. Yeah.
- 31:52Originally how I got linked with Travis was James was posting
- 31:55footage in South Africa. And I was like, this stuff just
- 31:58looks next level. Yeah.
- 32:00And so I found Travis's Instagram and I messaged him and
- 32:03he ended up coming. But Travis is insane to hang out
- 32:07with, insane behind the camera. Like he's just a good dude.
- 32:10Great hunter, too. Yeah, yeah, but dude, I'm sorry,
- 32:15dude, Scotty's just trying to. Smoke a cigar behind camera and
- 32:19he's choking. I wish you had our POV.
- 32:24That was pretty. Funny, that was classic.
- 32:26Oh no. God Dang, Martha.
- 32:32Like that, everybody forgot what's.
- 32:34Got jeez, a la pique. But yeah, what was it like to.
- 32:38I mean, you shot a really big buck too.
- 32:40Yeah. And that was cool.
- 32:42You made you made a really good shot and can't.
- 32:45I can't wait to see the full video whenever it's done.
- 32:47But I mean, I'm that was probably the biggest buck you've
- 32:50ever shot, right? Yeah.
- 32:51What was what was that like? Just to put down a real booner
- 32:53like that. It was cool that, like, had this
- 32:58crazy roller coaster. So opening morning, I shot the
- 33:01giant, like, target buck that I was after, and he was probably
- 33:04the coolest deer on the entire hunt.
- 33:06And you're talking about the entire hunt.
- 33:07This is like a prestigious unit. Oh, yeah.
- 33:10People are paying 100 grand for A tag.
- 33:12Yep. Again, it's all subjective,
- 33:14right? Some people like big typicals
- 33:16and anything that's not a big typical is not worthy to them.
- 33:20Yeah, this is a freaky cactus buck.
- 33:22And I for me, he was the deer I wanted.
- 33:24And I shot him high in no man's land, misranged him.
- 33:29Just nothing. There's nothing.
- 33:32That deer was lit. He's fine.
- 33:33Yeah. He's knocking him.
- 33:34Yeah. Didn't you find him like a week
- 33:36later? Someone shot him like a week and
- 33:38a half later and then he got killed on the rifle hunt.
- 33:43So yeah. But all that to say, I got on
- 33:47the deer I wanted opening morning, hit him, and then he
- 33:52ended up running like 2 1/2 miles from where we were on him
- 33:55and where he was showing and we never got back.
- 33:59We didn't get back on him in six days of hunting.
- 34:02And so we're like, he's alive. Like we had enough people
- 34:07looking at the footage to know that the deer lived.
- 34:10And so we just kept hunting and day six or seven rolled around
- 34:15and I had opportunities that other deer as well.
- 34:18By the way, like that hunt taught me a lot because like
- 34:21when you get on a big deer like that, nothing will prepare you
- 34:24for what a big deer makes you feel like getting on a big deer.
- 34:28So getting shaky and like brushing and like being freaked
- 34:32out, it's normal. But like the more deer you get
- 34:35on of that caliber, obviously it tames down that.
- 34:39Buck fever, at least that rushing just gives you more like
- 34:42more more reps where like your heart rate and stuff.
- 34:44I'm you're still through the roof, but you're like, you know
- 34:46what, I've been here before. Let me just handle it and and
- 34:50what you're like, dude, I can't even imagine because like had
- 34:53you ever even haunted a deer like close to these caliber
- 34:56like? No, dude, I mean like the
- 34:57biggest deer I killed in my entire life was the first deer I
- 35:01ever shot, which was when I was nine years old.
- 35:03And it was like a like a 145 like not like.
- 35:08White tailor mule Milder. Yeah, in New Mexico.
- 35:10Yeah, as a public mule, my first deer ever was my biggest.
- 35:14That's dope. That was with the rifle.
- 35:15It wasn't with the bow, but but yeah, I I haven't killed like a
- 35:19ton of giant mule deer. I mean, it's where I live in
- 35:22drawing hunts, right, right. I mean, it makes they're,
- 35:25they're tough critters to. To hunt, I think they're the
- 35:27hardest I've I've said that out of what I have.
- 35:30Haunted spot in stock I think mule deer, a mature mule deer I
- 35:34think is the hardest on it. I would say I'm pretty spoiled
- 35:36though, being in southern Utah because there's just there big
- 35:39deer on every unit. Yeah, true.
- 35:41If you put the work in, you'll kill big mule deer first in that
- 35:44area. Yeah, Utah's great for hunting.
- 35:46I mean, I've actually only haunted it three times and never
- 35:49for deer, but it's definitely on my list to hunt it for deer.
- 35:53Dude, I can't wait again. Can't wait to see the footage.
- 35:55Do you have any leaks when that might drop so people can look
- 35:58forward to it? So I was going to edit it and
- 36:01then Travis messaged me like 2 nights ago and he's like, hey, I
- 36:04want to edit this video. I think I can make it into
- 36:05something cool. So we're just kind of like
- 36:08it'll, it'll be out before May. Yeah, for sure.
- 36:11Cool. I have a few other hunts that
- 36:12I'm dropping a little later just to change the timeline on when a
- 36:17hunt drops. You know, Oh yeah, I like
- 36:18tobacco kind of during. Tax season when everyone's
- 36:21shooting foam and thinking about getting ready for hunting, I
- 36:23want to have a little blend and mix in there so.
- 36:26Yeah, dude. But but yeah, in a good time.
- 36:29Do you think that shooting all the 3DS that you've shot the
- 36:32last couple of years, because you shoot, you know, local 3D,
- 36:35you shoot it at your house, you shot Bow Disciples Challenge,
- 36:37Total Archer Challenge, Bow Fest, you've shot a lot of 3D.
- 36:41Do you think that when you're actually hunting and animals out
- 36:44there, do you think that that helps?
- 36:49It does. I think it builds confidence,
- 36:52but I don't think anything helps like actually being on the
- 36:55animal. I totally it's not it's not even
- 36:58it's not even close. Like it's I think all of us
- 37:02would agree we could have we could set a foam javelina
- 37:05targeted 100 yards and all of us could shoot at it and we would
- 37:08probably hit it with our first arrow pretty decent again, in
- 37:10the core at least. And out here it's just a
- 37:13different ball game. There's so many different
- 37:16factors, animals moving wind, trying to be sneaky, trying to
- 37:21be slow and quiet. And so I think it helps you for
- 37:25sure as a as a shooter, but and in a hunting sense, nothing
- 37:29helps you like hunting because some of the some of the people
- 37:33that have killed the most things and the biggest things that that
- 37:37I know personally, they don't, they don't shoot their bow all
- 37:41the time. They're just killers.
- 37:43And so it's like it does help you need to shoot your bow as
- 37:47much as possible and it it helps so much.
- 37:50But I think there's something super valuable about having
- 37:53something that's alive. But I'll say this, someone that
- 37:56shoots more 3D is probably going to be more prepared whenever the
- 38:00hunt comes around. What what's your take?
- 38:03You're the question, answer or the asker, but.
- 38:05Yeah. I mean, I, I think that I think
- 38:07that shooting your bow more in any capacity, whether that be
- 38:11indoor outdoor shooting for fun, shooting our beer pong game like
- 38:15any, any shooting I think is going to make you better when
- 38:18the moment comes. But I think you hit the nail on
- 38:21the head that getting more hunts and more high intensity reps in
- 38:27the field, that's actually training like your, your nervous
- 38:31system, your heart and like your mind that you cannot do that
- 38:36shooting. That is totally different.
- 38:37So you need to shoot a lot, but you also have to be out hunting
- 38:40a lot of and getting your boots on the ground, you know, but I,
- 38:44I want to ask you, we have one minute left.
- 38:46So you don't got to, you don't got to finish your answer in one
- 38:50minute. But I, I am curious, since
- 38:54you've been absolutely crushing the content, you've been killing
- 38:57it on so many different platforms.
- 39:00And I think a lot of people respect your stuff, including
- 39:03myself. Where do you see like Ty Jordan
- 39:07and and kind of your brand and where you're going to be at in
- 39:09like 5 years? What's like a five year plan
- 39:12for? Yeah.
- 39:12I mean five year plan. I want to create some of the
- 39:17highest quality shooting videos obviously, but also some of the
- 39:22highest quality hunting videos. Keep collaborating with cool
- 39:25people, stay true to me, inspire the next generation of Archers.
- 39:29I think that's a big one. I think there's a hole in the
- 39:33archery industry right now, but there's not a lot of younger
- 39:37people that the kids can relate to in a sense.
- 39:41I again, I do think that someone young can relate to someone
- 39:44who's very experienced and, and older in the industry, you'll
- 39:48always have like the legends and stuff, but in every industry,
- 39:52you need new people to come in and to be a figure.
- 39:57And so for everyone. I want my content content to be
- 40:00consumed by everyone obviously. But my biggest thing is to
- 40:03inspire the kid that I was whenever I was 8 years old.
- 40:07So inspire kids like me to want to go shoot and hang out and
- 40:11know that it's fun and. Not I, I want to make the sport
- 40:15seem not as intimidating as it is from the outside because I
- 40:19feel like there's so much you need to know for in order to be
- 40:24proficient with, with working on your bow or even putting
- 40:28together an arrow setup and stuff like that.
- 40:31If you're someone who's never shot and you start hearing all
- 40:33this stuff, it's very scary and it's very intimidating.
- 40:36And so I kind of want to be the person that makes it OK to be
- 40:41and experience in that area and like, hey, come along and learn
- 40:46with me because I don't know everything about hunting or
- 40:49archery. But I would at least like to
- 40:52lean on some of the peers that I know who have a bigger following
- 40:55that actually have worked in bow shops and know about bows and
- 40:59stuff and ask them questions about humbly and say, I don't
- 41:04know this, can you teach it to me?
- 41:05And so being that kind of Ave. For younger people and people in
- 41:08the archery industry and also just creating really high
- 41:12quality stuff. Well, you're definitely doing
- 41:14that. And yeah, I mean, I agree so
- 41:18much with bringing more young people in and bringing down the
- 41:20barrier and, and and making it seem more approachable to join.
- 41:24That's the whole reason I'm doing the target stuff is the
- 41:27same exact reason you said. It's a little bit different, but
- 41:29I think target archery could really use an influx of people
- 41:33that realize, hey, you know what, this isn't scary.
- 41:35I can go do this for fun and shoot my bow more.
- 41:38And that's what I'm hoping to do with our, our competition stuff
- 41:42and our indoor stuff. And I think that your content of
- 41:46just shooting in the backyard and showing great arrow flight,
- 41:50good shots, bad shots, that's awesome.
- 41:54And I, I love that type of stuff.
- 41:56So keep doing what you're doing. You're crushing it.
