- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast The First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at
- 0:20fumccollingswood. Dot org.
- 0:22Thanks for listening. I want to invite you to hear the
- 0:28word of God. This not this morning, this
- 0:32afternoon from Romans chapter 8, beginning in verse one, Paul
- 0:42writes to the church in Rome and says, therefore there is now no
- 0:47condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus because through
- 0:52Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life has set
- 0:57you free from the law of sin and death.
- 1:00For what the Law was powerless to do because it was weakened by
- 1:03the flesh, God did, by sending His own Son in the likeness of
- 1:08sinful flesh to be a sin offering.
- 1:12And so He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the
- 1:16righteous requirement of the Law might be fully met in US who do
- 1:20not live according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
- 1:25Those who live according to the flesh have their mind set on
- 1:28what the flesh desires, but those who live in accordance
- 1:32with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
- 1:36The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed
- 1:40by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh
- 1:44is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law,
- 1:47nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of
- 1:50the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the
- 1:55realm of the flesh, but are in the realm of the Spirit, if
- 1:58indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.
- 2:01And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not
- 2:03belong to God. But if Christ is in you, then
- 2:06even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the
- 2:10Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
- 2:12And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is
- 2:16living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also
- 2:20give life to your mortal bodies, because of His Spirit who lives
- 2:24in you. Therefore, brothers and sisters,
- 2:26we have an obligation. But it is not to the flesh to
- 2:29live according to it. For if you live according to the
- 2:32flesh, you will die. But if by the Spirit you put to
- 2:36death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
- 2:40For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children
- 2:43of God. The Spirit you received does not
- 2:47make you slaves, so that you live in fear again.
- 2:49Rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to
- 2:53sonship. And by him we cry, ABBA.
- 2:56Father, the Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that
- 3:01we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we
- 3:05are heirs, heirs of God and Co heirs with Christ, if indeed we
- 3:12share in His sufferings in order that we might also share in His
- 3:17glory. This is the word of God for the
- 3:21people of God. Jeremy's going to lead us in our
- 3:27first reflection today. I'm.
- 3:32Going to start off the top, we're actually just singing our
- 3:42first song. Singing what I hold dear.
- 3:48I counted all as loss, and at that time, right before I had
- 3:55both of my boys jump up into my arms and I was carrying Him.
- 4:00And So what I was literally holding is dear to me.
- 4:04And yet in comparison to the love of God, I count it as lost.
- 4:10They are but a drop in the ocean of His love for me and for you.
- 4:17And this morning I'm bringing nothing original to you today
- 4:23except for the context of what I'm going to share with you.
- 4:29As most of you know, I am in seminary at Asbury Theological
- 4:32Seminary, the Lord's Seminary. And seminary to many can be
- 4:38known as the faith killer where many go.
- 4:42And as they put in more and more knowledge, sometimes their pride
- 4:46and ego can grow so much that they believe they know better
- 4:49than God or have no need for God, or that they can explain
- 4:53away God. And I had a fear of becoming
- 4:57proud after gaining more knowledge of him, but with a
- 5:02desire and a heart to be humbled by my new understanding of God.
- 5:09As we come to Good Friday, I wanted to share some things from
- 5:13my schooling that I have provided that's been a part of
- 5:17my time there. Part of what I study is
- 5:21Christian history and how the church worked together to have a
- 5:24shared understanding of who Christ is and what Christ is.
- 5:29Many councils of church leaders over centuries debated on how
- 5:35much God Jesus was, how much human he was, how they work
- 5:39together. All of these things though, they
- 5:43believe Christ to be God. And we even have Paul quoting in
- 5:47one of his letters an early creed of the faith.
- 5:50And we have Gentile Greek writers talking about how they
- 5:53worship the crucified Christ as if a God.
- 5:58But it wasn't until the Chalcedonian creed in 451 where
- 6:04they were able to simplify it into a single sentence.
- 6:09Jesus Christ is truly God, truly human, and truly one.
- 6:17I also have incredible professors who have been able to
- 6:21explain the importance of Jesus being 100% human so that he's
- 6:25able to go on our full behalf as humans.
- 6:30He also gave a beautiful portrayal of Christ as deity and
- 6:35a response to one of my discussion post.
- 6:38I'm doing primarily online and for those that haven't done
- 6:41school online, it's a thrill. And instead of talking in
- 6:45person, you talk back and forth online.
- 6:48And usually when I post a couple sentences, no one replies or the
- 6:51teacher will just say good job. Or if I asked a question they
- 6:55would answer my question. I did not propose a question and
- 6:59yet here's just a part of my teacher's response.
- 7:05When we're studying who Jesus is, he says Jesus does save us
- 7:11through his deity. Only God can create, therefore
- 7:15only God can recreate. Our redemption requires both
- 7:20spiritual and physical resurrection, a reconstitution
- 7:24of humanity so powerful it is equal to the act of creation
- 7:31itself. No human or creature, regardless
- 7:36of goodness, resources, or gifts, has such power.
- 7:40Because Jesus is God, we can be confident in His power to
- 7:44transform us in nature. Second, Jesus makes the radical
- 7:48claim that he can forgive sins, something only God can do.
- 7:53And then my teacher quoted TF Torrance.
- 7:57If you cut the bond of being between Jesus Christ and God,
- 8:02then you relegate Jesus Christ entirely to the sphere of
- 8:05creaturely being, in which case His word of forgiveness is
- 8:10merely the word of one creature to another, which may express a
- 8:14kindly sentiment, but actually does nothing.
- 8:19But if Jesus Christ really is the Son of God Incarnate, if he
- 8:23is one with the very being of God, then his word of
- 8:27forgiveness on earth is the very word of God Almighty, a word
- 8:32with ultimate validity, backed up by the power and being of God
- 8:37Himself. Finally, my teacher loves to
- 8:41type. Apparently as truly God, Jesus
- 8:45makes his atoning sacrifice on the cross efficacious for all.
- 8:51His spotless humanity alone is not able to expiate for all sin
- 8:57and for every Sinner, because the one crucified is the eternal
- 9:01Son of God, the second Person of the Trinity.
- 9:04The sacrifice made covers all. We can live in assurance of the
- 9:11full benefits of Christ's atoning work, regardless of who
- 9:15we are or what we have done in life.
- 9:19What a reply, my gosh. This, I believe, connects us
- 9:24well into the opening of our scripture this morning, where it
- 9:28says, therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are
- 9:33in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus, the law of the
- 9:36Spirit who gives life, has set you free from the law of sin and
- 9:41death. For what the law was powerless
- 9:44to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending
- 9:48His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin
- 9:52offering. The more I study, the more I
- 9:58know about God. And if you think you know
- 10:01everything about God, you are farther and farther away from
- 10:06the truth. The more I know about God, the
- 10:11more I realize how little I can know about God.
- 10:16And that's why I wanted us to take some time to rest in the
- 10:20mystery of what's happening on the cross.
- 10:25I can tell you that Jesus died on the cross for your sins.
- 10:29I can tell you that he came as a sin offering.
- 10:33I can also explain in this moment how I'm talking.
- 10:37The microphone is sending a signal, signals going to the
- 10:40speakers through wires and getting to your ears.
- 10:45But that doesn't change all that is happening in this moment, all
- 10:51that you are understanding what the Spirit is doing in your
- 10:55hearts. How some of you will not
- 10:57remember a word of what I said in 30 minutes, and how some of
- 11:00you will chew on this afternoon for years to come.
- 11:05And yet if we dug deeper into what's happening now, we can
- 11:09learn all the electrons and wirings and how your brain
- 11:12functions and your ear receives what you are hearing.
- 11:16But that still wouldn't help you understand understand the
- 11:19profound truths of this experience.
- 11:23Nor do I believe that as we continue to ask very deep
- 11:29questions about what happens on the cross as how Jesus can
- 11:33become a sin offering, why death is necessary at all for this to
- 11:39happen, or even what happens when Jesus is referring or when
- 11:45he cries out to God. My God, my God, why have you
- 11:49forsaken me and we sit at the precipice of the mystery of the
- 11:55Trinity. There are answers to these
- 11:58things, and yet I don't believe those answers will necessarily
- 12:03lead you into a profounder understanding of what God did
- 12:08for you and I. And so I think we need to linger
- 12:16in the mystery of what happened that day with the certainty of
- 12:21what happened that day. I can read to you this from our
- 12:28Scripture this afternoon. The Spirit of Him who raised
- 12:31Jesus from the dead is living in you.
- 12:36He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your
- 12:40mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
- 12:46Hopefully we know that, but how does that work?
- 12:52What does that mean for you when you walk out of this place?
- 12:57The story of Good Friday is so familiar and yet so foreign to
- 13:03us, and I'm going to give us a time to linger in what happened
- 13:08that day and what it means for you and I today.
- 13:13I'll ask you to take whatever posture you'd like for this time
- 13:16and your Pew at the altar. I will have some slides of
- 13:21famous depictions of Good Friday to stir your contemplation, not
- 13:25distract you from leaning into this mystery.
- 13:29I'll give some context and a quick quote before we start.
- 13:34Tim, if you could put up that first image, the image we're
- 13:38seeing now, it's emboldened so that you can see what was
- 13:42engraved in plaster almost 1800 years ago.
- 13:47This is the earliest depiction that we believe to currently
- 13:51have of the crucifixion through art.
- 13:55And if you can tell even from that far away, Jesus's head is a
- 14:00donkey. And it's not because they were
- 14:04making an image out of reverence.
- 14:06They were mocking a Christian named Alex Aminos.
- 14:12And that's the inscription is Alex Aminos worshipping his God?
- 14:17And this is to mock those who follow Christ.
- 14:23Not everyone is going to fully believe or understand even the
- 14:26basics of what took place that day, and we will never fully
- 14:33comprehend what happened that day.
- 14:37But as we enter into this time of reflecting something so
- 14:41familiar, I would like to start us off with a quote from TS
- 14:46Eliot. Before I join you in this time,
- 14:50we shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all
- 14:56our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the
- 15:01place for the first time. For those who are led by the
- 15:09Spirit of God are the children of God.
- 15:13The Spirit you receive does not make you slaves so that you live
- 15:17in fear again. Rather, the Spirit you received
- 15:21brought about your adoption to sonship, and by him we cry.
- 15:26ABBA Father. Now if we are children, then we
- 15:31are heirs, heirs of God and Co heirs with Christ, if indeed we
- 15:37share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his
- 15:43glory. What a beautiful mystery.
- 15:48Let us pray. Lord, we come humbly before your
- 16:04throne of grace, before the cross, and imagine how we can
- 16:15hold those two together as you took off all that You were owed
- 16:26and put on our sin for our sake. Lord, would you renew in us a
- 16:36depth of understanding of that moment on the cross of who you
- 16:44are and who you are to us. Lord, that we would move forward
- 16:52in the security of knowing the truth of what happened that day
- 17:00while enjoying the mystery of what You did and we could never
- 17:06do on our own. In Jesus name, Amen.
- 17:13Hear the word from another of Paul's epistles to the churches
- 17:18from the book of Colossians, chapter 3.
- 17:23Again, we're beginning in verse one.
- 17:26Since then you have been raised with Christ.
- 17:30Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the
- 17:34right hand of God. Set your minds on things above,
- 17:38not on earthly things, for you died, and your life is now
- 17:42hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life
- 17:46appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
- 17:51Put to death. Therefore, whatever belongs to
- 17:54your earthly nature, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil
- 17:59desires and greed, which is idolatry.
- 18:02Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.
- 18:04You used to walk in these ways and the life you once lived, but
- 18:08now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these
- 18:14anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language from your lips.
- 18:20Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self
- 18:24with its practices and have put on the new self which is being
- 18:27renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
- 18:31Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised,
- 18:37barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all and
- 18:44Christ is in all. This is the word of God for the
- 18:48people of God. If I had to wager, I'd bet that
- 18:56most Christians, if they read verses 5 through 8 from that
- 19:02passage that we just read, if they read them in isolation.
- 19:05That part where Paul is talking about putting to death what
- 19:09belongs to the earthly nature. I bet most would think that
- 19:17Paul's talking about something that needs to happen before
- 19:21someone comes to Christ. Or that what Paul is describing
- 19:26is something that happens maybe at that moment of conversion.
- 19:31Or or maybe that it's what it means to actually be converted.
- 19:36When Paul says put to death, which literally in the Greek he
- 19:43says make dead, it sounds fairly synonymous with the idea that
- 19:49we've been talking about all through this Lenten season of
- 19:52denying yourself, taking up your cross, and following Jesus.
- 20:00It sounds like what Paul wrote in Galatians 2 too, when he
- 20:04wrote I have been crucified with Christ, therefore I no longer
- 20:09live. But I don't think that quite
- 20:15gets what Paul is communicating here to the Colossians here,
- 20:22this putting to death of that which belongs to our earthly
- 20:26nature that Paul is commanding here in Colossians 3.
- 20:29It's it's, it's a putting to death that's dependent on our
- 20:35already having been raised with Christ.
- 20:39The call to put to death, then, is not for unbelievers who would
- 20:45become Christians. The call to put to death is for
- 20:49us, for those who walk with Jesus.
- 20:53It's for those who have already decided to follow Jesus.
- 20:58It's an ongoing call to put to death what is of our worldly
- 21:04nature, what has been deformed by sin and the sinful world
- 21:08around us. But for us as Christians to to
- 21:13put this worldly nature to death, it's not about just
- 21:17muscling through and trying a little harder.
- 21:21It's not about imposing stricter regulations or exerting stronger
- 21:27willpower. It's not about earning salvation
- 21:32or even somehow making ourselves worthy of it.
- 21:36We could never do any of that. Instead this this putting to
- 21:42death. It's about living out of living
- 21:45from our resurrected with Christ life.
- 21:49It's living from the victory that Christ secured in his death
- 21:54on the cross and in his resurrection from the grave.
- 21:58That's where the power comes from, not from us.
- 22:06Put it in a different metaphor. Paul then goes on to talk about
- 22:09changing our clothes, taking off the old self, putting on the new
- 22:14self. It's it's a change of uniform,
- 22:17so to speak. Anyone wake up this morning in
- 22:23the same clothes you were wearing yesterday and come to
- 22:26church in those same clothes? I doubt it.
- 22:29Don't raise your hand if you did.
- 22:32But it's it's a change of uniform, a change of clothing
- 22:36from who we were and how we lived before Jesus encountered
- 22:41us to who we are now that we have met Jesus.
- 22:47And living according to the way of Jesus, the new self, the, the
- 22:51new life which we are to put on is something that is being
- 22:56renewed. Note that it doesn't say that
- 23:01that this new self was renewed, right?
- 23:04This is a process that Paul is talking about.
- 23:07It's, it's a present ongoing reality that we are being
- 23:12renewed more and more into the image of our Creator, the one
- 23:18who made us and designed us and and sustains us and therefore
- 23:23gets to define who and and what we were created to be and how we
- 23:29are to live. But in both of these metaphors,
- 23:34putting to death, putting off the old self, there are there
- 23:40are two things that stand out to me this afternoon #1 so we have
- 23:48a role to play in this process. This is not just something that
- 23:53happens to us from outside of us while we wait passively for
- 23:59change to come. Jesus doesn't come in and start
- 24:02killing off parts of our old nature or ripping off pieces of
- 24:08the old self. The expectation.
- 24:12It's that we need to cooperate with the transformation which
- 24:17God is working in US and he will empower us to do it.
- 24:23That's the second thing that stands out to me, the power
- 24:27which enables us to participate in our transformation.
- 24:32It comes to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus, since
- 24:38we've been raised with Christ. But in order to be raised with
- 24:43Christ, it assumes that we've also been killed with Christ,
- 24:51been buried with Christ, crucified with Christ.
- 24:59When we die with Christ, as we reflect on this Good Friday, we
- 25:07are raised with Christ, which enables us to put off and to put
- 25:13to death that old sinful, worldly nature.
- 25:17And that takes time, right? That process, what we call
- 25:22sanctification, it's how we're being made holy, like God is
- 25:28holy. And so as we reflect on Jesus's
- 25:32crucifixion and the sacrifice on this Good Friday, we remember
- 25:39that Jesus died for us. He sacrificed for us.
- 25:47He suffered for us so that our sin can be forgiven.
- 25:54And because Jesus also rose for us, sin has been defeated.
- 26:01Our sinful nature can be put to death.
- 26:07But He won't do that to us, empowers us to do it.
- 26:15He invites us to take our position in Christ, standing in
- 26:19the reality that sin, death, the devil, and the world no longer
- 26:25control us. We can participate in the
- 26:30process of our transformation as the Spirit applies Christ
- 26:34victory to our lives. If we'll join him in his death,
- 26:43if we'll submit to being crucified with Christ, we too
- 26:51will be raised with Christ. Would you pray with me, Jesus?
- 27:00We, we want to believe that promise that if we, if we are
- 27:09buried with Christ, if we die with Christ, we will be raised
- 27:13with Christ. We are raised with Christ seated
- 27:19even in in heavenly places. And because of that, you want to
- 27:25empower us. You can empower us to live
- 27:29differently than we did in our old lives, our lives controlled
- 27:33by sin and self and the world. So would you empower us today as
- 27:41we reflect on what it means that Christ died for us?
- 27:48Would you help us to remember that we're called to be
- 27:53crucified with Christ right alongside, to put to death that
- 28:00which belongs to our earthly nature, so that you, Spirit, can
- 28:07take up residence and empower us to live in the fullness of all
- 28:12that you promise? Help us, we pray in Jesus name,
- 28:20Amen.
