- 0:02Hello, this is Jamie Bridges, and thank you so much for joining us for this week's podcast.
- 0:08All of our services are inspired and built straight from the Bible.
- 0:11Let's get into this week's message recorded at Life Community Church.
- 0:21That's the first time I preach with that intro.
- 0:23Fuck.
- 0:25It's a little uh intimidating.
- 0:30You guys doing alright?
- 0:32Listen, um, if if you approach an individual at church and tell them that they look better with a beard.
- 0:44Not that I've had this experience today, but it would be similar to me going to a woman and saying, you look better with makeup.
- 0:54I'm just throwing that out there.
- 0:56Guys, can I have some help here?
- 0:58Thank you.
- 0:59Thank you, men.
- 1:00Thank you, men.
- 1:01Let's rally together.
- 1:03Some of you are cowards.
- 1:04I see you not clapping.
- 1:07Because she rules you.
- 1:10It might be the reason you don't have a beard.
- 1:13I'm just kidding.
- 1:13I just oh, yeah.
- 1:17All day.
- 1:18All day, every day.
- 1:20Uh walked out yesterday like this, and the twins looked at me and was like, What did you do?
- 1:26And I was like, Do we really need to talk about it?
- 1:29This is what I no, you look so different.
- 1:32Yeah, I know.
- 1:32I get it.
- 1:34It's fine.
- 1:35Well, welcome to Life Community Church.
- 1:37Happy summer.
- 1:39Come on, Summer.
- 1:40We're my summer people.
- 1:42You love summer, yep.
- 1:44You love Midwest summer.
- 1:49Scott, chill.
- 1:53Yeah, you love the humidity.
- 1:55I love it.
- 1:56I love it.
- 1:56Hey, we're we're all summer long and for 15 years we've done this where we have spent the summer in a book in the Bible, and uh we're spending all summer long, all 16 weeks in the book of Corinthians.
- 2:10And um I'll be honest with you, like this isn't my this isn't my favorite way to to preach.
- 2:16Like I'm I'm more of a I don't know if you know this about me, but I'm more of like a like spontaneous ADD kind of guy.
- 2:23Like I like, and I gotta hone in on 16 verses in chapter two.
- 2:27You might as well put a leash on me.
- 2:29So it's not my favorites, okay, but I understand the concept.
- 2:35It's the reason we've done it for 15 years.
- 2:38We want to be on the same page.
- 2:39We know that you're traveling, we're traveling, everyone's traveling, and so for us to do that, we can do that through Bible reading plans and uh podcasts and all of those things.
- 2:48And so we want to we wanna hone in together on what this looks like and what we're talking about all summer.
- 2:54So today we're in chapter two, and uh, Paul, one of the things that I love about Paul, I've done deep dives into Paul's life, and uh Paul was obviously wrote a lot of the New Testament.
- 3:05Paul was a guy who that last song that we just sang about, Jesus Changes Everything, was really uh some of the lyrics from that song was built out of this house, and it was after Paul's life, because Paul was a guy who literally believed he was changed from who he was to who he is now, and he believed Jesus changed him.
- 3:28He believed he was a persecutor, he was a murderer, he was a religious zealot, and all of a sudden when Jesus came and interrupted his life, he was radically changed.
- 3:37Like Jesus was number one in Paul's life, and so we see this throughout his writings, we see this throughout all the books that Paul wrote, we see this coming out so much that he can say to the Galatian church, I have been crucified with Christ.
- 3:53It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.
- 3:58He's saying everything that I do now with the rest of my life, it reflects who Jesus is.
- 4:04That was opposite of what Paul used to be and who he used to be.
- 4:08And so what Paul is saying up front is listen, this is who I am.
- 4:12I'm not ashamed of it so much that he says, I'm unashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 4:18Everywhere Paul went, you knew he was compassionate, he was bold, but the Bible also tells us that Paul wasn't that good to look at.
- 4:27It's an ugly dude.
- 4:29Short, the Bible says, we relate.
- 4:32Bow-legged, big nose, bald.
- 4:34If you look at old statues of Paul, you'll see his writings, nice, glorious beard, nothing on top.
- 4:41Right?
- 4:41I'm relating to the short, some of you are relating in the other.
- 4:45Right?
- 4:46This is what we find out so much that in 2 Corinthians 10, Paul says, Some of you are saying that my letters are powerful, but in person I'm unimpressive.
- 4:59Paul's saying that.
- 5:00So much that what Pastor Sean did so beautifully last week is he said, like some of you, you love Apollos because he's he's nice in stature, he's well polished in his words, he's he's receivable, all these things.
- 5:14You like him.
- 5:14Some of you, you like the boldness of Peter, you like the confidence that Peter walks with.
- 5:20When I come in, you're not impressed with me.
- 5:22You're only impressed with my letters.
- 5:24You're only impressed with what I'm sending you.
- 5:28And so Paul instantly, from the very beginning, he lets us know, man, I'm the least of the apostles.
- 5:34I know there's nothing special about me.
- 5:37It's the reason he says, like, my power works best in weakness.
- 5:41Paul understood who he was.
- 5:44He's not trying to be something he's not.
- 5:45And he's writing to Corinth, a wealthy community, a wealthy city.
- 5:51To us, and you might have heard this on the podcast, to us, it's a lot like LA.
- 5:55It's a lot like New York.
- 5:57These high profile, high wealth, high gas prices, high all these things are going on.
- 6:03And this is this is what Corinth is like.
- 6:05They're very sophisticated, very uh a lot of theology, a lot of intelligence, a lot of wisdom.
- 6:12A lot of these things are happening.
- 6:14So when Paul's talking, he's saying up front, guys, listen, I'm not trying to woo you with my words.
- 6:21In fact, he says this in verse 1.
- 6:23He said, When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters, sisters, I I don't I didn't use lofty and impressive words to tell you God's secret plan.
- 6:33For I decided that while I was with you, I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.
- 6:43Paul says, Listen, I didn't come to you trying to impress you with my now understand, Paul was raised and mentored by one of the top educators.
- 6:54So Paul was well educated.
- 6:56He said, Listen, in my well being well educated, I didn't come to you trying to impress you with big words and all of these things.
- 7:03I came to you and I only said one thing Jesus Christ and him crucified.
- 7:08That's it.
- 7:09I left everything else out, just that.
- 7:12Jesus Christ.
- 7:13Paul understood that transformed lives come from the gospel, not personality, not performance, not persuasion.
- 7:24He says, This comes from the good news of Jesus, and so that's all I'm gonna give you.
- 7:29And some people are like, ah, you're not very impressive, Paul.
- 7:34Short guy?
- 7:36You're not very impressive.
- 7:39You just talk about the same thing.
- 7:41And he's he's coming from this place.
- 7:44The church grows strongest when Jesus is the center.
- 7:49That's when the church grows strongest.
- 7:51He then continues in verse 3.
- 7:53He says, I came to you in weakness, timid and trembling, and my message and my preaching were very plain.
- 7:59Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, you see the theme?
- 8:03I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 8:06I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom, but in the power of God.
- 8:11Paul admits he comes in weakness, he comes in fear, he comes trembling.
- 8:17Yet the Holy Spirit moved powerfully.
- 8:21Here's what we know about Paul's life.
- 8:24When God showed up, you couldn't say that's what Paul did.
- 8:28Paul was so gifted, Paul did that.
- 8:31They said, despite Paul, look what the Lord has done.
- 8:36Despite who Paul was, despite his education, look what God has done through him.
- 8:42So much of our experiences, so much of what happens to us in life, even when Paul says, Listen, the peace that God gives goes beyond our human understanding.
- 8:51What does that mean?
- 8:52That means that there's a peace that God gives that even though your circumstance does not change, it goes against all human wisdom.
- 9:00That's the kind of peace that God gives.
- 9:02This is what Paul's coming from.
- 9:04He's saying, guys, listen, there is something bigger than myself.
- 9:08There's something bigger happening here.
- 9:11There's something bigger than my wisdom.
- 9:13And he's wanting everyone to see so that your faith would not rest on human wisdom, but that your faith would rest on the power of God.
- 9:21Rely on the power of God, not on your thinking.
- 9:26We a lot of times try to figure things out.
- 9:29Let me try.
- 9:30If I can figure, listen, if you can figure out the mysteries of life, you might be God.
- 9:38Paul's saying, I can't figure this out.
- 9:41Apart from the Holy Spirit, I'm nothing.
- 9:44This is the place every single one of us has to get.
- 9:47Because the moment we make this about something that we can do, why do we need the Lord?
- 9:53This is what Paul is addressing.
- 9:56Verse 6.
- 9:58He said, Yet when I was among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom, but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world who are soon forgotten.
- 10:09No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God, his plan that was previously before the world began.
- 10:16But the rulers of this world have not understood it.
- 10:19If they had, they would not have crucified our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 10:24He said, Listen, Paul explains, there is a deeper wisdom from God that the world cannot understand.
- 10:31Human rulers, leaders failed to recognize that Jesus was who he said he was.
- 10:37And because of that, they were spiritually blind.
- 10:41The world often rejects what Jesus values.
- 10:46This is the heartbeat of what Paul's trying to get to the Corinthian church.
- 10:51He says, listen, the world has a standard, heaven has a standard.
- 10:56You and I have to understand and discern the difference.
- 11:00His point is, apart from the Spirit of God, you cannot discern that.
- 11:05You cannot discern what heaven wants when you're spiritually blind.
- 11:11You cannot discern what Jesus values when you put your wisdom into it.
- 11:17If you're an overthinker in this world, this is gonna mess you up today.
- 11:24Because you're overthinking something that takes faith and the power of God to transform.
- 11:30Your thinking ain't gonna fix it.
- 11:33Your wisdom's not gonna fix it.
- 11:35You have to submit and surrender to.
- 11:39Because here's what culture values.
- 11:41Culture values image, Jesus values character.
- 11:46Culture is so consumed by how we look, how successful are we?
- 11:51Do you build your brand?
- 11:52Do you protect your image?
- 11:54Being impressive.
- 11:55Jesus says it's all about holiness, it's all about humility, it's all about being faithful, it's all about being authentic.
- 12:02It's the reason when Samuel came and he's looking, he says, God doesn't judge people judge by the outward appearance.
- 12:09God judges by what is going on inside here.
- 12:13God judges character.
- 12:15That's why when you see who God has used, even looking in this passage, he looked at all of the brothers of David.
- 12:23He's impressive, he's impressive, he's impressed.
- 12:26What did the Spirit of God say?
- 12:28The Spirit of God said to Samuel, Do you got another son somewhere?
- 12:33Because I know on the outward, these guys look impressive.
- 12:36The Bible called them handsome, strong.
- 12:38These guys look impressive, but the spirit of God is saying, There's another boy somewhere.
- 12:42He's like, Yeah, yeah, the little kid who's out playing with the sheep.
- 12:48We got him.
- 12:49Bring him here.
- 12:51And the Bible says, when he saw him, God said, This is the king that I have chosen.
- 12:57That's not culture, you guys.
- 12:59Culture said, Let's look at that guy, he's impressive.
- 13:02Jesus says, I got something else going on inside this heart.
- 13:06This is what he's talking about.
- 13:07Culture values power.
- 13:09Jesus values servanthood.
- 13:14Jesus values surrender.
- 13:18Jesus values serving people, lowering yourself, loving sacrificially.
- 13:25He says, greatness comes through humility, not arrogance, not winning at all cost, not being first, not making others serve you.
- 13:36That's the reason Jesus said, Whoever wants to be a leader.
- 13:40He didn't leave the question there.
- 13:42Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be the servant.
- 13:48He's saying, Listen up front, Jesus flipped the description, the definition of greatness.
- 13:53He flipped it upside down.
- 13:55Because culture values self, Jesus values surrender.
- 14:00Follow your heart.
- 14:02Culture says, do what makes you happy.
- 14:04You know how dangerous doing what makes you happy is?
- 14:10I mean, have you ever just wanted to punch someone?
- 14:16That would make me happy.
- 14:19Have you ever have you ever wanted to?
- 14:21I mean, there's so many things that we can say, like, do what makes you happy, follow your heart.
- 14:27The Bible says your heart is the most deceptive.
- 14:31It's deceiving.
- 14:32Live your truth.
- 14:33Put yourself first.
- 14:34And Jesus says, deny yourself.
- 14:37Follow me.
- 14:39Submit to God.
- 14:41Live by truth, not feelings.
- 14:44So when Jesus says, if any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way.
- 14:52This is denial.
- 14:54If my heart is telling me I need to do something, I need to check my heart and go, is this really what I should be doing?
- 15:01Because there's consequences to those things.
- 15:04I know we don't talk about that a lot.
- 15:06But some of us are living in those consequences.
- 15:10We know consequences.
- 15:12We know right and wrong.
- 15:14And culture values these temporary things whereas Jesus is trying to see eternally.
- 15:21Big picture.
- 15:23Not just this moment.
- 15:26Big picture.
- 15:28What do we value?
- 15:30Popularity?
- 15:31Status?
- 15:33Souls.
- 15:35Being faithful.
- 15:36Being generous.
- 15:38Eternity.
- 15:39That's the reason Jesus said, don't store up treasures on earth.
- 15:43Store up your treasures in heaven.
- 15:46What is he saying?
- 15:47He's saying, guys, think about what we're doing as followers of Jesus.
- 15:52Think about what that means for eternity, not just here in this moment.
- 16:01The danger for the Corinthian believers is not just culture outside the church.
- 16:08The danger for the Corinthian believers, which is the same for us, is culture getting inside the church.
- 16:15What Paul is addressing with the Corinthian church, what he's warning the Corinthian church is don't think like the world.
- 16:23Don't value what the world values.
- 16:26Don't measure success by the way culture measures it.
- 16:29Instead, love me.
- 16:32Serve people.
- 16:33Live by the Spirit.
- 16:35Think with the mind of Christ.
- 16:38The Holy Spirit, Bible says, as we're about to read, reveal reveals spiritual truth.
- 16:44Verse 9 says, That is what the scripture means when they say, No eye is seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.
- 16:57You know what he's saying to us right now?
- 16:59He's saying, You can't even fathom the way God wants to bless and use you if you would just.
- 17:06I prayed with Christina in between services at the tent as she's about to embark this week and go to Thailand for two months.
- 17:12What is that?
- 17:13That's someone going, God, I'm willing to go.
- 17:15He says, Listen, because you're willing to go, because you're willing to do those things, you can't even fathom.
- 17:21Your ears, your eyes, you, your heart can't even fathom what God has in store for you.
- 17:28There's so much more, he's saying, than what than what you're experiencing right now.
- 17:33But it was up to us that God revealed these things by his spirit.
- 17:37For his spirit searches out everything and shows us God's deep secrets.
- 17:42No one can know a person's thoughts except that person's own spirit.
- 17:45And no one can know God's thoughts except God's own spirit.
- 17:48And we have received God's spirit, not the world's spirit, so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given to us.
- 17:56Paul says, God has prepared incredible things for us.
- 18:01But these truths are revealed through the Holy Spirit.
- 18:16And the man says, Sir, could you pick me up and take me to the pool?
- 18:21Because every time I want to go there, someone beats me there.
- 18:25And Jesus responds with a question that I think is very peculiar.
- 18:30And the question is, do you want to be healed?
- 18:36That sounds like an obvious question.
- 18:40Do you want to be healed?
- 18:42Is this something you want?
- 18:44And he's like, hello.
- 18:4738 years.
- 18:48This is all I've ever known.
- 18:52Can you pick me up and take me over there?
- 18:56And the Bible says, Jesus at that moment says, just get up and walk, take your mat and go.
- 19:01And he was healed on the spot.
- 19:04But my thought in this question, which is for us today, do you want to be changed?
- 19:12Do you want the mind of Christ?
- 19:15Do you want to experience all that God has for you?
- 19:18And I think that's an important question.
- 19:20You would think the obvious answer to that question is why are you even asking it?
- 19:26It's an obvious yes.
- 19:27Same way as do you want to be healed?
- 19:30It should be an obvious yes.
- 19:32What Jesus is teaching in that moment that I think he's teaching us is I don't think a lot of us want to be healed.
- 19:40Had it been so, he wouldn't have asked the question.
- 19:42He would have just said, take up your mat and walk home.
- 19:46But he asked him the question because with the answer comes accountability and responsibility.
- 19:52And I think a lot of us say, God, I want to be changed.
- 19:55I want to be different.
- 19:56I want all of these things.
- 19:57Jesus is saying, okay, if you are, you can no longer use them as an excuse.
- 20:02What he's saying to the man is, if you're healed, you can no longer beg here.
- 20:06You can no longer live the way you used to live.
- 20:09We understand that because we see that.
- 20:11But spiritually, Jesus is saying, Do you want more?
- 20:14And I would go, Well, of course I want more.
- 20:16And he's going, but you're going to be changed.
- 20:19And if you want more, you can no longer do this.
- 20:22You can no longer do that.
- 20:23And I think so many times our answer is instantly yes.
- 20:27But when we ponder it, we actually don't want to give this and that up.
- 20:33We like this too much.
- 20:35This is too unknown.
- 20:37This I do know.
- 20:39This I can hold on to.
- 20:41And we understand it, you guys.
- 20:43We get it.
- 20:43This is a spiritual principle, but we get it.
- 20:46We understand that if I want my life to be changed, I got to do things differently.
- 20:51If I want to lose 15 pounds and I think I'm going to live the way I currently am and I'm going to be able to lose that 50 pounds, I'm ridiculous.
- 20:58It's ridiculous to think that.
- 20:59We understand that my appetite has to change.
- 21:02The things that I put in my body has to change.
- 21:04How I move my body has to change.
- 21:06Or I'm not going to see any results.
- 21:08That's where we get the definition of insanity.
- 21:10You're doing the same thing over and over and over, and you're expecting different results.
- 21:13We get that because we've all tried it.
- 21:16Every single one of us in this room, it's the reason when you're signing up for a new plan, they ask you, have you done this plan or another plan before?
- 21:23Because they know this is like attempt number 10 to lose weight.
- 21:31Hello?
- 21:34You need to bring someone alongside you.
- 21:37Because here's what I know.
- 21:38When we've done healthy things together, that's where I've seen transformation.
- 21:45But the moment I say, hey, babe, listen, I'm only eating meat and I come home and she made lasagna, I'm now tempted to go, oh, I want your lasagna, but I'm not eating that right now.
- 21:56But when we're doing the same thing, now I'm not tempted.
- 22:00Want to come home?
- 22:00What is that?
- 22:01That's accountability.
- 22:02This is what Jesus is asking.
- 22:04If you want it so bad, you're going to bring someone alongside you that while you're getting that fountain solar from Moto, they're going to smack it out of your hands.
- 22:15Like you need that person where you're like I won't do it.
- 22:20I really want to do it.
- 22:24You can't eat that.
- 22:29That's gonna help me.
- 22:32Nobody, I'm just waiting on the Lord to tell them so that they can come to me.
- 22:36Well, the Bible says if you want friends, be friendly.
- 22:43I just kind of stick to myself, I don't know why nobody likes you.
- 22:48I can tell you why.
- 22:54You're not very nice.
- 22:55Your friend says something completely different.
- 22:58It does not say, Come talk to me, it says get away.
- 23:03Why are people getting away?
- 23:04That's what you're saying, you know what I mean?
- 23:08IBF is real.
- 24:09When the guy showed up and walked out, someone needed to come alongside him and say, Hey, you're no longer the person.
- 24:16You're no longer the victim.
- 24:17You're no longer the person that used to be.
- 24:19You need to live differently now.
- 24:21He needed that.
- 24:23So do we.
- 24:24This is what Paul is addressing.
- 24:27He's saying, guys, listen, for us to have the mind of Christ, we have to think differently.
- 24:32It's the reason he ends this whole chapter, the last four verses.
- 24:36He says, When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom instead we speak words given to us by the Spirit.
- 24:43Using the Spirit's words to explain spiritual truths.
- 24:46But people who aren't spiritual can't receive these truths from God's Spirit.
- 24:51It all sounds like foolish to them.
- 24:53It all sounds foolish to them.
- 24:56And they can't understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.
- 25:03Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others.
- 25:12Who knows enough to teach him?
- 25:14But we understand these things because we have the mind of Christ.
- 25:21Do we have the mind of Christ?
- 25:24Are we relying on the spirit?
- 25:28I encourage you to get around people who are hungry for Jesus.
- 25:58And we're having a conversation.
- 26:01And this is the conversation.
- 26:05And while on the plane, I don't know how you are on the plane.
- 26:11And then sitting next to a guy, we start conversing.
- 26:15And the conversation goes something like, I gave my life to Jesus, but then I walked away because of shame.
- 26:22All this is coming out.
- 26:24And in this moment, he asked Hayes what his favorite verse was.
- 26:28And Hayes said, Philippians chapter, I think, two, and verse eight, quotes it to him.
- 26:35And then he says, Why is that your favorite verse?
- 26:39And Hayes says, Well, it's not my favorite verse.
- 26:42When you ask me what my favorite verse was, I asked God to give you the verse that you needed, not my favorite verse.
- 26:51And while they're flying, this man, first and foremost, comes back to Jesus after leaving him.
- 26:58Secondly, is challenged by a 19-year-old kid, sorry, 19-year-old young adult.
- 27:07A 40-year-old man is challenged by his words because someone was sensitive to the Holy Spirit to share a verse when you could have just put in headphones and done your own thing.
- 27:22And I think this is my point in saying this.
- 27:25And I didn't say this in first service.
- 27:27My point in saying this is so many times we tune out the spirit and we try to do things on our own, and on our own we fail to the point where we have to understand I need to tune into the spirit.
- 27:40That there are people that we come in contact every day that the Spirit of God is speaking to you about on their behalf.
- 27:46Because the Bible says God is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
- 27:50And if God is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked, he's going to use people who are attentive to his spirit to reach the ungrateful and the wicked.
- 28:01The question isn't, is God speaking?
- 28:03The question is, are we listening?
- 28:07Am I in tune?
- 28:09Is the static too much?
- 28:14Am I in tune?
- 28:15Because here's what it looks like when I have the mind of Christ.
- 28:20I value what Jesus values.
- 28:23And Jesus doesn't value anything more than people.
- 28:28Here's how I know.
- 28:30Am I is the mind of Christ an idea?
- 28:34Is the mind of Christ a good concept?
- 28:36Is it a goal?
- 28:37Is it an aim?
- 28:38Or do I have the mind of Christ?
- 28:40Here's how I know Am I valuing the people in my life like I should?
- 28:45Am I treating my wife, my kids, my peers?
- 28:48Am I treating them like they should?
- 28:50Because Jesus did that.
- 28:54He gave us the greatest example of being around 12 best friends.
- 29:01He had the greatest group.
- 29:04And in the moment where Jesus says, How I value them, how I treat them, is the example for everyone.
- 29:12And in the moment of betrayal, in the moment of the most difficult time in their group relationship, one of them betrays him.
- 29:21And in this moment, Jesus could have taught us to unfriend him, to send him away, to do, to, to talk nasty about him.
- 29:29He could have done all those things.
- 29:31And in the moment, Jesus says to us, This is how you treat people who betray you.
- 29:37You wash their feet.
- 29:40You grab a towel and you wash their feet.
- 29:44And I know your offended heart, your hurt heart, your heart that says you don't understand what they did to me doesn't understand that.
- 29:52I don't need you to see that with your natural eyes, your offended eyes, your do what makes you happy eyes.
- 29:57I need you to see it with the mind of Christ.
- 29:59Because the mind of Christ says, except for Christ, you too are that far gone.
- 30:05Don't judge people because they sin differently than you do.
- 30:11He's saying, unless you're willing to put on the mind of Christ, you'll never see what spiritual things have to do with one another.
- 30:18And in this moment, Jesus says, Go and do likewise.
- 30:22He's saying, not wash the feet of people that agree with you and are kind to you and are easy to mentor.
- 30:28He said, Wash the feet of Judas.
- 30:34And it's not what culture's gonna tell you to do.
- 30:36In fact, you'll grab some friends and you'll say, Well, these all these friends tell me I need to I need to set boundaries, I need to do all these things.
- 30:43Alright, cool.
- 30:44Here's how did Jesus set boundaries with you?
- 30:46I'm just throwing that out there.
- 30:48Or did he welcome you in?
- 30:49And I'm not telling you not to be smart, I'm not telling you you don't set boundaries.
- 30:53I'm just telling you, we've excused ourselves away from the mind of Christ to make sense culturally.
- 30:59And what Paul is telling the Corinthian church is you guys have brought culture into the church.
- 31:03That's not biblical.
- 31:05It's not biblical, it's not what Jesus taught us.
- 31:08It's not the mind of Christ, it's the mind of whoever you think it should be.
- 31:13Let's call it what it is.
- 31:14It's the mind of the devil.
- 31:17Does this honor God the most?
- 31:19Is the question.
- 31:20Does this honor God?
- 31:22And listen, I know who's walking away from here.
- 31:24I know who's walking away from here really mad.
- 31:27The person in this room that refuses to heal from a broken heart.
- 31:32And I don't say that to you in condemnation, I don't say that to you to shame you.
- 31:36I say it in you're gonna always make excuses the rest of your life until your heart heals.
- 31:41Because hurt people, hurt people.
- 31:45And you're gonna hurt people the rest of your life until you deal with that broken heart that you have.
- 31:50That only happens when you put the mind of Christ on.
- 31:53You can't do it otherwise.
- 31:55Because in my own, in my own ability, I'm gonna fail people.
- 32:00In my own ability, I'm not gonna see people as lost.
- 32:03In my own ability, I'm gonna see them as competition.
- 32:07Do you know?
- 32:08Oh my god, kid, I would be a bajillionaire if I had a dollar for every time someone in their insecurity over the last 30 years of me doing what I'm doing right now walked up to me and said, You better be careful.
- 32:22So-and-so speaks better than you.
- 32:25Oh, you better be careful, so-and-so is gonna come get your job.
- 32:29And I say, Hey, little person, not walking in the mind of Christ, why are you making this a competition?
- 32:39Can can Pastor Sean, can Pastor Mike, can Michael Brusickey can they not come up here without you making it about something bigger than it was?
- 32:47But I go way back when churches would bring in guys, and here's how they would interview.
- 32:52We don't care about your character.
- 32:53Can you get up and preach us a sermon?
- 32:56And we're gonna evaluate you afterwards.
- 32:58And then you want to know why they stole money, why they cheated on our spouse?
- 33:02Because you didn't care about character, you cared about being appeased, you cared about who was gonna fill seats, you cared about what people had to say that were nice and comfortable.
- 33:11Build this church, and then all of a sudden you realize this isn't the mind of Christ, this is culture coming into the church.
- 33:17This is what Paul's addressing to the Corinthian church.
- 33:21He says, You made it something that's not Jesus while calling it Jesus, and Jesus is going, That's not me.
- 33:29I'm grabbing a towel, I'm not a knife, not a spiritual gun where you're murdering people with your words, you're murdering people with your words, you're a gossip and a slander.
- 33:46That's what you are, and you're slandering people, and then you're doing it in the name of Jesus, and Jesus going, That's not me.
- 33:53I could have talked about Judas, I could have showed you that way, but I grabbed the towel and I washed his feet anyway.
- 34:00There's nothing more humbling than washing someone else's feet.
- 34:04Why?
- 34:05Because they're nasty, nasty, we have socks.
- 34:11They didn't, I don't think, anyway.
- 34:13If it was, they would have been like nasty socks.
- 34:16I don't know.
- 34:22They washed dirty, stinky feet.
- 34:25I can't imagine anything more humbling.
- 34:29This is the example Jesus gave because he saw people differently, you guys.
- 34:34He saw them differently.
- 34:37This is the hour as the church.
- 34:38This is the urgency of what Paul's saying.
- 34:41I said, This is the hour of the church where we need to be the church, we need to show them something different.
- 34:46They're not gonna believe what you believe until you show them something different.
- 34:49I am not who I was because of Jesus' love.
- 34:54Paul's saying, you know why I'm different?
- 34:56Because I met him, because I encountered him.
- 35:00People don't care what you know about Jesus until you show them Jesus.
- 35:05Show them Jesus, do good, love them, forgive them, extend grace to them, stop not talking to them.
- 35:13You speak, I mean, Paul addresses this later on.
- 35:16You guys, you're so concerned about the gifts and who's got this gift, and who's and Paul goes, Listen, I speak in tongues more than all y'all.
- 35:24I love that Paul said that.
- 35:26He's like, You guys are fighting over these things.
- 35:28You speak in tongues and you're nasty to your waiter.
- 35:32You speak in tongues, you prophesy, you have all these spiritual gifts, but when you're out in public, nobody wants to be around you because of how hateful or Paul's going, listen, you're a clanging symbol.
- 35:43You're a clanging symbol if you do all this stuff without love.
- 35:48And I think Paul's like, I'm so tired of this.
- 35:52Policy up, you're great, amazing.
- 35:54But I'm not coming with lofty words, I'm coming with the truth, and this is the truth.
- 35:59Jesus changed my life.
- 36:00This is what Paul had.
- 36:02Paul goes, I don't I don't have height, I don't have stature, I don't have hair, I don't have, I don't have all these things, I don't have, I don't have all these, but here's what I do have.
- 36:10Gee, I once was lost, now I'm found.
- 36:13Here's what I do have.
- 36:16I love people, and I demonstrate like that's all I got.
- 36:20If you want to make fun of it, you want to you want to call me weak?
- 36:24He said so much he says, yeah.
- 36:26In my weakness, he gives me strength.
- 36:29You know what Paul said?
- 36:30He said, I'm the least of all the apostles, man.
- 36:33I'm not the best, but here's what I do know I'm ashamed of the gospel, because it transformed my life, which always comes back to this, you guys.
- 36:44At the end of the day, and all you got is your story.
- 36:47Nobody can take that from you.
- 36:50Nobody, nobody can take that from you.
- 36:53All you have is your story.
- 36:55The invitation of what Paul's saying is you want to put on the mind of Christ, put on the mind of Christ.
- 37:02Here's how we're gonna live.
- 37:03Here's how it's gonna be different.
- 37:06And it's an invitation, it's an invitation to be different, not for your name's sake, but for his.
- 37:14For his.
- 37:15Amen.
- 37:17Wow, what a summer we're gonna have, huh?
- 37:21Will you pray with me right now?
- 37:28God, apart from you, we're nothing.
- 37:31I didn't save myself, I can't.
- 37:35I am who I am because of you, Jesus.
- 37:39I can stand here in your grace, I can be the husband, father, grandfather.
- 37:46I can be who I am because of Jesus.
- 37:50God, may we never forget that.
- 37:53May we never forget what you've done.
- 37:57God, I pray that you would help us see the bigger picture, not this moment, not the temporary things, God, eternal things, the things that matter.
- 38:14God, we need you.
- 38:16We acknowledge you right now.
- 38:20Not who I was because of your love for us.
- 38:25In that while we were still sinners, Christ died.
- 38:29God, I'm forever changed because of what you've done.
- 38:32My family is forever changed because of what you've done.
- 38:36Help us to see it.
- 38:38In the mighty name of Jesus.
