Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, welcome to Inside the Tape. On Inside the Birds,
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher, I'm with Adam Kaplan, and of course
- 0:14Speaker 1: we're joined by Greg Cosel. He's gonna break down the
- 0:17Speaker 1: tape as he always does, of the Eagles last game.
- 0:20Speaker 1: We've already done the offense from the Eagles in their
- 0:23Speaker 1: thirty one to twenty five win over the Bucks, and
- 0:26Speaker 1: now we're gonna flip sides and go with the defense.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And man, we talked about Jekyll and Hyde the way
- 0:31Speaker 1: the offense was. Honestly, the defense played pretty good, but
- 0:34Speaker 1: two shot plays Greg really turned that game on its
- 0:38Speaker 1: axis in the second half and made it a lot closer.
- 0:40Speaker 2: And they were weird plays. I mean, I'm sure you
- 0:42Speaker 2: have them, but yeah, they were weird plays. So we'll
- 0:46Speaker 2: get to those. But I think for the most part,
- 0:49Speaker 2: the defense played pretty good.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, well some cackling which is a little shoddy,
- 0:53Speaker 3: But yeah.
- 0:55Speaker 1: What's stepped out to you from a approach standpoint as
- 0:59Speaker 1: far as being nick dime four to three?
- 1:01Speaker 2: What's stud The first thing I immediately noticed was that
- 1:05Speaker 2: Andrew mccooba was was an every down player. They did
- 1:09Speaker 2: not do what they've been doing in recent you know,
- 1:11Speaker 2: through the first three games where in their base defense,
- 1:14Speaker 2: Sidney Brown played safety and Macooba only played in the
- 1:17Speaker 2: nickel and dime. This he was an every down player
- 1:21Speaker 2: for the first time this season. In two high structure alignments.
- 1:25Speaker 2: He almost always lined up to the field or the
- 1:28Speaker 2: passing strength of the offensive formation because he can match up.
- 1:32Speaker 2: So he gives them tremendous flexibility in their coverage because
- 1:36Speaker 2: he can match up if they choose to play man,
- 1:39Speaker 2: he can match up to wide receivers. So that's why
- 1:42Speaker 2: he's the passing strength safety, the field safety in their
- 1:46Speaker 2: too high structures because if they do want to play man,
- 1:49Speaker 2: that's where you have more receivers to you know, to
- 1:51Speaker 2: the white side of the field. I'm trying to think
- 1:54Speaker 2: what else stood out to me. So obviously ring all
- 1:59Speaker 2: who they did really test, you know, Yeah, it was odd.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I kept waiting, you know, because obviously you guys know
- 2:05Speaker 2: I watched Red Zone on Sunday. Yeah, you guys watched
- 2:07Speaker 2: just the Eagles game. I'm watching red Zone. Sure, watched
- 2:10Speaker 2: both of the tape. Yeah, but they didn't really test him,
- 2:14Speaker 2: you know, and I was kind of surprised by it.
- 2:16Speaker 4: I was shocked I thought they would isolate him for sure.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 5: You know that's funny because watching the some of the
- 2:22Speaker 5: tape of Money, I'm like, Okay, Ringo's running with this guy.
- 2:25Speaker 6: What are they gonna throw to him?
- 2:27Speaker 2: And they did.
- 2:27Speaker 5: I know he's got good length, but we've outlined his
- 2:30Speaker 5: issues since really day one about stiffness and transition.
- 2:33Speaker 2: You'd almost have to say that he played fine because
- 2:35Speaker 2: he wasn't really tested.
- 2:36Speaker 5: He held up, but now I know the run defense, Jeff,
- 2:41Speaker 5: he took some angles, like dude, you gotta like he
- 2:44Speaker 5: just and he wasn't the only culprit. And you know,
- 2:48Speaker 5: I know you're not grading plays that should have been
- 2:50Speaker 5: called flags, Greg, but boy, the Eagles held some jerseys
- 2:53Speaker 5: in that game which were not called I mean it was.
- 2:56Speaker 2: The other thing that stood out to me was how
- 2:58Speaker 2: good Mitchell is a study. I know, guys, I mean
- 3:02Speaker 2: you know, I'm at the point I was saying to
- 3:04Speaker 2: my guys that you know, I think you got to
- 3:06Speaker 2: talk about him as the top three corner in the league.
- 3:08Speaker 6: I mean, wow, that that high.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Well, he's really good player, now, certain is he?
- 3:14Speaker 4: And I know you don't do rankings, but.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I think in talking to somebody who who had studied corners.
- 3:22Speaker 2: He was not a coach, but he's someone who's close
- 3:24Speaker 2: to it all. You know, he felt that the best
- 3:27Speaker 2: corner in the league last year was Stingley and certain
- 3:30Speaker 2: was second that you know. And again, you know, I'm
- 3:35Speaker 2: not good with those kinds of lists, as you know,
- 3:37Speaker 2: but I mean, Mitchell is really a good player.
- 3:39Speaker 4: What do you like about him so much? What do
- 3:41Speaker 4: you like about him?
- 3:41Speaker 2: I mean, I think that given given how he played
- 3:45Speaker 2: at Toledo, where he was always an off coverage corner
- 3:49Speaker 2: and didn't really you know, match up to players, you know,
- 3:53Speaker 2: he does a great job when he matches. And I'm
- 3:55Speaker 2: not talking about necessarily press. I'm just talking about matching up. Yeah,
- 3:58Speaker 2: you've got to, you know, truly run with raw travel.
- 4:01Speaker 2: And again they're using him as a as their matchup
- 4:03Speaker 2: corner because he played a Booka. I mean, he played him,
- 4:07Speaker 2: you know.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Now.
- 4:08Speaker 2: The only time he really didn't is if a Booka
- 4:11Speaker 2: lined up inside. But Booka this year has really been
- 4:14Speaker 2: an outside receiver, not a slot receiver. And in this game,
- 4:17Speaker 2: forty seven of the sixty four snaps he lined up outside,
- 4:21Speaker 2: so pretty much on every single one of them, Mitchell
- 4:24Speaker 2: was over and I don't know if a Buka, he
- 4:27Speaker 2: might have made one catch in that situation, Jeff, if
- 4:30Speaker 2: memory serves me correctly, But there was nothing big.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it was two. But yeah, it was
- 4:34Speaker 1: two for very minimal, minimal game.
- 4:36Speaker 5: Yeah, and look the playdown field. I mean they got
- 4:39Speaker 5: to knock that ball down for seventy seven. I mean
- 4:41Speaker 5: that was a seventy seven yard touchdown.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Greg, We'll get into that, because that's not it seems
- 4:47Speaker 2: like they should have but no, it's it's not really Okay, Wow,
- 4:52Speaker 2: we talked about Mitchell had nothing to do with that.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Were you going to show that play? Jeff? Yes, of course, okay,
- 4:57Speaker 2: because then I'll wait till good enough.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I just want to ask you though, while we're talking
- 5:02Speaker 1: about Mitchell, is when you compare him to Stingley and
- 5:05Speaker 1: certain are those guys move Do they move around to
- 5:08Speaker 1: the best receiver week after week?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Also, sir Tan often does Stingley not so much?
- 5:14Speaker 1: Got it? I mean that's to me like a sign
- 5:16Speaker 1: of the ultimate respect. When a defensive coordinator does that
- 5:20Speaker 1: to you.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Well, they almost have to do it too because of
- 5:23Speaker 2: the other corner. See don't forget Kamari lassater In Houston
- 5:26Speaker 2: is a really, really good player, so Stingley does not
- 5:29Speaker 2: have to play every team through good receiver.
- 5:32Speaker 5: You know.
- 5:33Speaker 2: And while Riley Moss in Denver is not great, he's
- 5:36Speaker 2: a tough, physical, competitive dude. And you know, Sir Tan
- 5:40Speaker 2: doesn't always have to match up to the best, but
- 5:43Speaker 2: Sir Tan does at times.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And Greg once again, would you you would say that
- 5:49Speaker 1: what you saw on tape was an aggressive pressure scheme
- 5:53Speaker 1: from Vic Fangio.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Uh yeah, more, I mean yeah, they played a lot
- 5:58Speaker 2: of man coverage. By the way, they played a lot
- 6:01Speaker 2: of man. This was not one of those let's you know,
- 6:03Speaker 2: soft zone deals, and they had great success. You know,
- 6:08Speaker 2: when they blitzed, they blitzed on they rushed. I should
- 6:10Speaker 2: say this, they rushed five or more on twelve of
- 6:13Speaker 2: Mayfield's forty three dropbacks. But they had a ton and
- 6:17Speaker 2: I didn't chart them a ton of sim pressures. And
- 6:21Speaker 2: all they do with their sim pressures is it's either
- 6:23Speaker 2: Bond or Campbell. They have a very very low percentage
- 6:27Speaker 2: of using their dbs as pressure players. They don't really
- 6:33Speaker 2: do that.
- 6:34Speaker 1: You know what's so funny is you remember Cooper de
- 6:35Speaker 1: Jen's first game against the Browns last year, and they
- 6:38Speaker 1: use them as they blitzer on a sim like maybe
- 6:40Speaker 1: two or three. Y. Yeah, they really it's almost like
- 6:44Speaker 1: they never went back to that way.
- 6:45Speaker 2: And you wonder if you're going to see it at
- 6:46Speaker 2: some point because now it'll be unexpected, it'll be something
- 6:50Speaker 2: that it may not really prepare for.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Right, right, So Mitchell played, well, how did mccouba play overall?
- 6:58Speaker 1: For being a true star or now where I think.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Again, there were no you know, to me again without
- 7:06Speaker 2: charting plays like like you know, Joe pass their safety's
- 7:09Speaker 2: coaches doing, you know, obviously, I mean he didn't to me,
- 7:13Speaker 2: didn't give up anything, and you know, maybe maybe he
- 7:16Speaker 2: didn't make a ton of tackles, but I thought he
- 7:18Speaker 2: was fine.
- 7:19Speaker 6: Hey, by the way, Jeff coaches, Greg, you guys probably
- 7:22Speaker 6: know this. They chart they great every single play, every play.
- 7:27Speaker 3: It's really it's really interesting to talking to coaches over
- 7:29Speaker 3: the years because you have a colon.
- 7:31Speaker 6: How did sell and so play? Because well, on.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Thirty plays that he played, here's how I grated him,
- 7:37Speaker 3: And it's really really cool.
- 7:39Speaker 2: You can't do that, obviously, I'm exactly right.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Well, Greig, I'm sorry, but you're gonna have to pick
- 7:44Speaker 1: up the pace.
- 7:45Speaker 6: All right, I'll say this, Hey, Jeff, I'll say this much.
- 7:49Speaker 3: And we've talked about this briefly over the years with
- 7:52Speaker 3: with Greg, when he and Jaws would watch tape together
- 7:56Speaker 3: and it might take four hours to do a game
- 7:57Speaker 3: for whatever it would take to there'll be some place
- 8:01Speaker 3: to go. They would go over twenty five times sometimes
- 8:04Speaker 3: if they were not clear and they wanted to be
- 8:06Speaker 3: precise and not make mistake, if they didn't text the
- 8:09Speaker 3: coach if you don't got to see it again.
- 8:11Speaker 6: I don't. I don't feel comfortable saying this right.
- 8:14Speaker 2: No, can't tell you how many times, Jeff, I wanted
- 8:17Speaker 2: to do a play in the matchup show. I love
- 8:19Speaker 2: the play, and when I do a play in the
- 8:22Speaker 2: matchup show, I literally look at all twenty two players
- 8:24Speaker 2: over and over and again to make sure I'm not,
- 8:27Speaker 2: you know, missing something that makes me wrong. Now, I'm
- 8:30Speaker 2: sure I've been wrong at times because I don't There's
- 8:32Speaker 2: no way I can know exactly what coaches know. But
- 8:35Speaker 2: you know, sometimes we would just I wouldn't do a
- 8:38Speaker 2: play because as much as I might have liked to
- 8:40Speaker 2: play and a particular concept of the play, I just
- 8:43Speaker 2: felt like I'm just not exactly sure what that protection
- 8:47Speaker 2: scheme is or I'm just not sure what that coverage
- 8:50Speaker 2: is and I just don't want to be wrong.
- 8:52Speaker 1: It makes sense, all right. Well, one last question before
- 8:54Speaker 1: we get into some film watch and one comment that
- 8:57Speaker 1: I in the pregame show you guys might remember, said
- 9:00Speaker 1: that my game MVP was going to be Quinya Mitchell.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I think I've got right on that.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I think, Wow, So I want to but I do
- 9:08Speaker 1: want to ask you about the trenches. Tristan Worth came
- 9:11Speaker 1: back to play left tackle, enabled them to play their
- 9:13Speaker 1: normal center, the normal left guard. They're still on backups
- 9:17Speaker 1: on the right side U and also Godwin came back
- 9:19Speaker 1: to give him a little boosts. But how did you
- 9:21Speaker 1: think or I'm sorry, what did the tape show mostly
- 9:24Speaker 1: about the D line or the front the defensive front for.
- 9:27Speaker 2: The I thought Carter was, you know, was much better
- 9:29Speaker 2: this week, even though he might not have made an
- 9:31Speaker 2: impact game changing play. I thought just the way in
- 9:35Speaker 2: which he played, he was just more assertive, more aggressive
- 9:38Speaker 2: in his movement. He just looked more like Carter. You know,
- 9:41Speaker 2: don't forget, you can't. You're not gonna make a game
- 9:43Speaker 2: changing play every single week. You know and defensive tackles
- 9:46Speaker 2: can have really good games and not have stats. I
- 9:49Speaker 2: thought he was a factor. I definitely noticed Adarius Smith
- 9:53Speaker 2: and Josh Husha who got meaningful snaps because obviously Nolan
- 9:56Speaker 2: Smith is now out again. Maybe they didn't make a
- 10:00Speaker 2: game changing plays, but I will say this, I would
- 10:02Speaker 2: say that, you know, from a pressure perspective, I was
- 10:06Speaker 2: hoping to see a little more in terms of the
- 10:07Speaker 2: four man D line pass rush. Yep.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I mean this is probably why Vick is blitzing at
- 10:13Speaker 1: a higher rate and simming as much as he's doing,
- 10:15Speaker 1: because he probably he needs to create pressure that way.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think he's getting exactly what he would
- 10:21Speaker 2: like from a four man D line pass rush right now.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I would think that's fair.
- 10:25Speaker 2: And I think, Jeff, you just nailed it. He's telling
- 10:27Speaker 2: us he's not by what he's question all the time.
- 10:32Speaker 1: All right, let's take a look at a few clips
- 10:33Speaker 1: on defense. A big play in this game came from
- 10:36Speaker 1: Killy Ringo on fourth down. Greg. It was a pass
- 10:39Speaker 1: break up along the left side.
- 10:41Speaker 2: They're gonna bring keep going forward a little, here's your
- 10:44Speaker 2: here's your classic. H just what we're talking about. This
- 10:47Speaker 2: is in four man sim pressure. I believe that's bad,
- 10:49Speaker 2: is it not? Who's I'm gonna.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Reel it back now again, just so that people watching
- 10:53Speaker 1: and listening can hear it. They've got they only have
- 10:55Speaker 1: a three man line, correct.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Uh no, well it's weird.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I remember this because Cooper de Jene sort of looks
- 11:03Speaker 1: like the guy. I'll let you said it out.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Right, right, but no, but I think down below, if
- 11:08Speaker 2: you run it, who's standing up down below?
- 11:11Speaker 1: That is Hunt? So they have I remember this, Greg,
- 11:13Speaker 1: because I looked at it. They have three interior linemen
- 11:16Speaker 1: on the line.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Right and then outside, so it's a fore man. They're
- 11:20Speaker 2: in their four two nickel, right, they're in their four
- 11:23Speaker 2: two nickel. It's just that Hunt is removed from the box.
- 11:26Speaker 2: So if you just look at it quick, you think
- 11:28Speaker 2: he's not a defensive lineman.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Right. And also, Greg, those are three in those three
- 11:33Speaker 1: guys rushing are three interior. There's no second overhang or
- 11:37Speaker 1: out the.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Right right right. See, and don't forget Hunt gives them
- 11:40Speaker 2: this versatility as well because of his background as a
- 11:43Speaker 2: safety that you know, he's got the movement ability to
- 11:46Speaker 2: be able to you know, to do this right.
- 11:49Speaker 1: So it looks like it's a well covered play here
- 11:52Speaker 1: with the yeah pressure and I don't.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Pressure Bought being the fourth guy coming from the linebacker
- 11:57Speaker 2: level and Baker has to move here.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Yep, and Ringo had Yeah, I mean he's all over
- 12:05Speaker 5: him right there, but ring Members fell immediately.
- 12:10Speaker 1: He was right on.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Good job.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I just thought, you know, it's obviously somewhat of
- 12:15Speaker 1: a scrambled drill player. I don't unless that was the route.
- 12:19Speaker 1: But we're gonna take a look at this again because
- 12:20Speaker 1: there you have Carter Davis and but you only have
- 12:25Speaker 1: Hunt lined up overhang and no other.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Quote unquote, no defense, no slash defensive end type player
- 12:31Speaker 2: here correct, which.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Is a new I have not seen Vic do this,
- 12:34Speaker 1: and maybe he's done it once or twice, but right.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I'm sure he has. But yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 1: And then so and it's weird because Degene sort of
- 12:43Speaker 1: looks like an overhang but he's just there in the slot.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Good pressure somewhat by Carter overright tackle forces him out, and.
- 12:51Speaker 2: They're playing This is one of those combo zone man
- 12:55Speaker 2: hybrids because because you know they're they're matching up, but
- 13:00Speaker 2: some some are playing man, others are not. Because look
- 13:02Speaker 2: Godwin runs the crosser and and Campbell picks him up.
- 13:05Speaker 2: But you know, Campbell's not playing him man to man
- 13:08Speaker 2: like the play The play call is in Campbell, you
- 13:10Speaker 2: got Godwin man to man R So because.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Degene doesn't follow, I think Buka, there's no Degene.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, he's in his own deal and yeah this is yeah.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Good tackle and got his hands in there and jar
- 13:23Speaker 1: out all right. Next one is Quina Mitchell is going
- 13:25Speaker 1: to break up a real sort of a back throw
- 13:28Speaker 1: off the back foot of from Baker Mayfield here on
- 13:33Speaker 1: third and seven. This is a big, big third and
- 13:35Speaker 1: seven stop in the second quarter. So this time looks
- 13:40Speaker 1: like the Eagles put a little more pressure with a
- 13:42Speaker 1: stunt inside.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Right. Oh yeah, this was one. This was on Godwin
- 13:47Speaker 2: because what they did is, yeah, a Buka was inside,
- 13:51Speaker 2: so he wasn't matching up to him. You know, honestly
- 13:54Speaker 2: Godwin had it.
- 13:55Speaker 4: But yeah, Quinon took the ball out of his hands.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, stroke they go for strong here.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Yeah, when you see the other angle at him. To
- 14:03Speaker 1: your point, it was a way better pass breakup than
- 14:06Speaker 1: even looks because he uses his left hand.
- 14:09Speaker 6: It's phenomenal.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Strong here and they keep ringo down below. He does
- 14:16Speaker 2: not go over to the other side. So they're technically
- 14:20Speaker 2: playing his zone concept here. But don't you know you
- 14:22Speaker 2: got to match up at some point. You're not going
- 14:24Speaker 2: to just let guys first strong on the right strong
- 14:28Speaker 2: one side of the formation. Right, And because a Buka
- 14:32Speaker 2: is inside this time, Mitchell does not match a Buka.
- 14:35Speaker 2: He matches the vertical route by Godwin.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Yep.
- 14:40Speaker 2: And see it's funny who's on who matches Abuka Macuba?
- 14:46Speaker 1: That's right.
- 14:47Speaker 2: It's just the versatility that Macuba brings.
- 14:50Speaker 1: That's a great point.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Before he's on him, he's on him.
- 14:54Speaker 6: He popped it out with his left hand. I saw it.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean while he's mid air. By the way
- 14:59Speaker 1: he did that. When you see this view, it looks
- 15:01Speaker 1: even prettier. And by the way, this will give us
- 15:03Speaker 1: a good view of the pressure screen. So now you
- 15:06Speaker 1: have Campbell. I kind of walks down here to create
- 15:09Speaker 1: that five man front, Greg.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Campbell did that eighteen times in this game, nineteen
- 15:15Speaker 2: times last week, eighteen times in this game. Clearly that's
- 15:18Speaker 2: something Vick's doing. You know, I would assume that would continue.
- 15:23Speaker 2: He doesn't always rush the quarterback. Sometimes he does. Sometimes
- 15:26Speaker 2: he doesn't, but it's clearly part now of what their
- 15:29Speaker 2: defense is, right.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And now you see Byron Young and Carter executed inside
- 15:33Speaker 1: a TT stunt I.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Guess, which, by the way, was what ended the game
- 15:38Speaker 2: when he Joe Moo sacked Mayfield. It was a loaded
- 15:41Speaker 2: front with a nice little T T stunt inside and
- 15:44Speaker 2: we're going to watch that.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Yep, I got that one. But yeah, here's the other
- 15:47Speaker 1: view that shows you in the middle of the air.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Look at him stretch out his left hand and interfere
- 15:53Speaker 1: a veteran.
- 15:54Speaker 4: That's a veteran play right there.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Amazing. So this is the Campbell interception. Greg, you want
- 15:59Speaker 1: to go through this?
- 16:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this this was a run around play.
- 16:04Speaker 2: I mean, this is this you know there's it's not
- 16:08Speaker 2: really a tactical play in a strict sense.
- 16:11Speaker 6: Agree, you had to get rid of it at the
- 16:12Speaker 6: last second, and he just made a mistake.
- 16:14Speaker 1: So that was very good pressure from me. I think
- 16:16Speaker 1: that was just a four man rush.
- 16:17Speaker 2: That was what I was one of those already. And
- 16:20Speaker 2: by the way, Godwin is wide open here. I mean,
- 16:23Speaker 2: if blanket Share ends up on the ball, this is
- 16:27Speaker 2: very possibly a touchdown.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Watch Godwin put his hand up yeah.
- 16:31Speaker 2: I mean he's running on the bottom, he's running across
- 16:35Speaker 2: the field. Who is that way Mac.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Twenty fourth macouba. Yeah, he's open.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah, well you'll see yeah, right there. You can't throw
- 16:49Speaker 2: it now, Yeah.
- 16:50Speaker 4: He could shim yeah.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Right now if he can. If that ball is not tipped,
- 16:56Speaker 2: maybe it's a Touchdow. I'm not saying it is, but
- 16:58Speaker 2: maybe it is. But it became a fire drill because
- 17:02Speaker 2: I believe of CH's a pass rush on there zero zero.
- 17:09Speaker 1: He kicks inside because again, as you mentioned, Campbell comes
- 17:12Speaker 1: down over the right edge.
- 17:15Speaker 2: It's you know, he forces the initial movement.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Yeah, he beats the right hack right there.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Hey, look that's what we said in the pregame show.
- 17:24Speaker 1: That's the side that they had. Yeah, he asked, right now,
- 17:29Speaker 1: you know what he is look good.
- 17:30Speaker 5: I know he's not put up the sack numbers, but
- 17:32Speaker 5: he looks he looks like he could still play.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Yeah, he gets up field every.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Game explosive to me.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you could sort of see at the
- 17:41Speaker 1: bottom of the screen, Godwin's sort of crossing into the
- 17:44Speaker 1: end zone now, but there's just no way Mayfield you
- 17:47Speaker 1: can see that probably shouldn't have thrown that ball. I
- 17:49Speaker 1: think that goes without saying.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I know why he threw it though, because when he
- 17:52Speaker 2: started to throw it, Godwin, if you if you saw
- 17:55Speaker 2: it from behind Mayfield, because I get I see both
- 17:58Speaker 2: angles in zones, he looked wide open. Now I'm not
- 18:01Speaker 2: saying to what you know, who knows, but you know
- 18:04Speaker 2: the ball was tipped by blanket ship right all right, late.
- 18:07Speaker 1: In the game second twelve, you already had set it up.
- 18:09Speaker 1: You just talked about the overloaded front.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Oh, well this is yeah, this is the Yeah, it's
- 18:15Speaker 2: a loaded front, meaning there's three defensive linemen to one
- 18:18Speaker 2: side of the center. Almost always, it's not one hundred percent,
- 18:22Speaker 2: but almost always there's a stunt of some kind involved
- 18:25Speaker 2: with loaded fronts. And the whole key to this is
- 18:29Speaker 2: Zach Bond. And you know why he's the key because
- 18:31Speaker 2: he eats up the right guard so the right guard
- 18:34Speaker 2: can help the stunt on the load side. Yeah, okay,
- 18:38Speaker 2: because it's a t T stunt with Carter as the
- 18:40Speaker 2: penetrator and with Ojomo as the UH as the looper,
- 18:45Speaker 2: so you'll see exactly what I mean. Bond does this
- 18:47Speaker 2: intentionally because now the right guard has to deal with him.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Because now he becomes the fifth rusher. This this became
- 18:55Speaker 2: uh cover cover one with a behind a five man pressure,
- 18:58Speaker 2: so it looks perfect freeze. And you see the right
- 19:01Speaker 2: guard has to deal with Bond and the center Barden
- 19:04Speaker 2: goes hard with Carter because it's Carter. You know you're
- 19:07Speaker 2: not leaving Carter alone.
- 19:08Speaker 6: Ye.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Jomo does a great job by the way of working
- 19:12Speaker 2: upfield first and not giving away the loop too early.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, that's a great point.
- 19:17Speaker 2: I'll leave you.
- 19:18Speaker 1: It was just a little bit there to show you
- 19:20Speaker 1: what a Jomo does. He rushes as if he's going
- 19:23Speaker 1: straight in and not around.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Yeah. Look look look look he makes it even seem.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Like right, yeah, exactly, that's great.
- 19:30Speaker 1: That's a great pass rush him get.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Low, yeah, beautiful.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Wow.
- 19:33Speaker 6: Wow, he was explosive.
- 19:35Speaker 4: I know he hasn't put up the sack numbers.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Is this the long touchdown? Now?
- 19:39Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a touchdown. So by the way, I
- 19:41Speaker 1: did not put the other touchdown in just because it
- 19:44Speaker 1: was sort of scrambled drillish.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, and it wasn't really Campbell's.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Got a guard down the field.
- 19:49Speaker 2: That's this is this is the Ibuka one, right, yes,
- 19:52Speaker 2: all right, Adam, this one's for you, Okay, you know
- 19:55Speaker 2: what happened here. Yeah, So what this is is this
- 19:58Speaker 2: is shotgun boot okay, shotgun play action boot right, and
- 20:02Speaker 2: they're running flood. Okay, So in an ideal world, you
- 20:05Speaker 2: want to make the throw to Shepherd who it's a
- 20:08Speaker 2: flood is a three level concept. There's a short route,
- 20:11Speaker 2: an intermediate route, and a vertical route, which ninety nine
- 20:14Speaker 2: point nine percent of the time is a clear out route.
- 20:17Speaker 2: And that's what Abuka runs here. He runs the clear
- 20:19Speaker 2: out route and you can tell by his gait he's
- 20:22Speaker 2: not even expecting the ball is going to be anywhere
- 20:25Speaker 2: near him, because that's the way it works flood.
- 20:27Speaker 6: No, I wasn't doubting that. I just thought it was
- 20:30Speaker 6: what we'll see what the take shows.
- 20:31Speaker 2: So ideally the throw gets made here to Shepherd on
- 20:37Speaker 2: the crosser from the backside because of boot and that's
- 20:41Speaker 2: the throw. Okay. But what you're going to see here,
- 20:44Speaker 2: by the way, Mitchell does a great job, but also
- 20:47Speaker 2: Macouba sees the crosser and he knows that that's where
- 20:51Speaker 2: the ball wants to go, so he's gonna sit and
- 20:54Speaker 2: he's getting ready to jump the crosser.
- 20:56Speaker 1: That's what I thought he did. I thought he tried
- 20:58Speaker 1: to jump it.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, well that's what he did. Because and then
- 21:02Speaker 2: you can tell if you if you go back to Jeff,
- 21:04Speaker 2: watch booka run, go back if you can't cant to
- 21:08Speaker 2: the to the sideline, can.
- 21:09Speaker 1: You, yeah, give me one second?
- 21:14Speaker 2: All right here it is just watch a booka. Okay,
- 21:17Speaker 2: you can tell he's running just to clear out. He's
- 21:20Speaker 2: not running to get the ball. Look. Look, he's just
- 21:23Speaker 2: running to clear out. Look he's not even he's looking back,
- 21:25Speaker 2: you know, figuring, Okay, ball's going to be thrown. I'm
- 21:28Speaker 2: not really part of this play. And then all of
- 21:30Speaker 2: a sudden he sees Baker, you know, as he's on
- 21:34Speaker 2: and he goes, oh my god, I better run. So
- 21:37Speaker 2: mccouba gets caught, and yeah, if he's he almost makes
- 21:40Speaker 2: a great play. Yeah you're right, you're right.
- 21:43Speaker 6: Yeah, it would have been.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah, they beat it. They they they were one of
- 21:47Speaker 2: those plays that I mean, I don't know how they
- 21:50Speaker 2: deal with Macouba on this play, but I you know,
- 21:53Speaker 2: he's playing here that that it is flood and then
- 21:56Speaker 2: you're throwing the crosser.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Right right crosser on those two plays, that one and
- 22:02Speaker 1: the one we didn't show where you know, they got
- 22:05Speaker 1: the seventy seven yard right, one hundred and fifty yards
- 22:08Speaker 1: on two plays, right right, So both quarterbacks really got
- 22:13Speaker 1: almost all their yardage on about two to four plays.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Right right. Kind of funny, right what it?
- 22:19Speaker 1: Mayfield finished with three hundred yards, so we got half of.
- 22:22Speaker 2: It on two plays, two plays, and that's what made
- 22:25Speaker 2: it a game, you know, but you know it was
- 22:27Speaker 2: it was you know, obviously it became a game. But
- 22:31Speaker 2: you know, again, we get back to the point that
- 22:33Speaker 2: the Eagles are four and oh they find a way
- 22:35Speaker 2: to win these games, and they win them because you
- 22:37Speaker 2: know what, they know how to win. They got it.
- 22:38Speaker 1: They've got to back they don't. Let's get all the
- 22:41Speaker 1: cliches going on.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, all right, great stuff.
- 22:46Speaker 1: We can all agree. Eagles defense, you know, some work
- 22:48Speaker 1: to do in the past rush, but from top to bottom,
- 22:51Speaker 1: make a lot of plays. And the two turnovers as
- 22:54Speaker 1: they have been every week where they've had at least
- 22:56Speaker 1: one turnover in each game, have really been the difference
- 22:59Speaker 1: in all of these possession games. That's gonna do it
- 23:02Speaker 1: for Inside the Tape on Inside the Birds Defense version
- 23:05Speaker 1: for Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan. I'm Jeff Mosher, and
- 23:08Speaker 1: of course we'll catch you on the next one.
