- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the three O take
- 0:16presented by a seat kick. This is episode 460.
- 0:22I'll be your host Kyle Corwin. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:25Reyes. Nate.
- 0:29Did you forget? No, I've told you before I'd
- 0:33like, I like keeping people on their toes if they're in the
- 0:37car, if they're driving, they're going following along.
- 0:40Oh, this episode 4 I like. I'd like to know if they keep.
- 0:44Them on their toes. I care.
- 0:46I'd no, I'd if they're anything like me, they probably do
- 0:50because when I listen to podcasts that I I listen to
- 0:52thrive and are. You slightly impressed when you
- 0:56hear that, when you hear like a big number, like an episode
- 0:59number or oh. No, no, I'm not talking about,
- 1:01I'm not talking about the number.
- 1:02I'm not talking about the number.
- 1:03I'm saying like when I'm, when I'm listening to a podcast I
- 1:05listen to throughout the week, I'm kind of like reciting the
- 1:07intro as the person, whoever's doing the intro is saying it.
- 1:13So I like, I like keeping people on their toes by by switching up
- 1:17the cadence a little bit. I.
- 1:18See, I'm more impressed like it. I think when you think of the
- 1:22number, it's like that's a, that's a lot.
- 1:25You know what I mean? We're getting up there.
- 1:28We're we're pushing 5 hundo we got.
- 1:30To do something for 500? Can we make that agreement now?
- 1:35It's it's a guarantee. We don't have to really make an
- 1:37agreement, but we can officially we'll make an agreement to do
- 1:39something big for 500. I got to map that out and figure
- 1:42out when 500 balls hard pizza party would probably land.
- 1:45We're going to make up some ground in the playoffs.
- 1:48I that's true, that's true. Haven't really haven't really
- 1:50run this by yet, but I I have an idea that we just need to crank
- 1:55out pods during the postseason. Yeah, I'm down.
- 1:59Like instead of the one or two a week, frank them out.
- 2:04Maybe even like daily. That's too much.
- 2:06Might be a. Little too much, but we'll.
- 2:10I'm with it. We'll, we'll be.
- 2:12We're closer to 500 than we think.
- 2:15We'll get it'll line up in the offseason, right?
- 2:17So yeah. I believe so.
- 2:22I got a question for you. I almost pulled the trigger on
- 2:26going to an Orioles game today. Orioles, Red Sox and I was going
- 2:31to go by. Myself a loner game.
- 2:34I was going to go by myself. Meredith had some, had a meeting
- 2:38she had to go to, and so I was thinking, why not go by myself?
- 2:44It's close enough. It'd take me like an hour and
- 2:46some change to get there. May even run into Ryan, I don't
- 2:49know. Friend of the pod Ryan Ripken.
- 2:52So I was like, maybe let's see what the tickets are going for.
- 2:54Pretty much across all the the websites.
- 2:57The lowest I found was like $5.00.
- 2:59So I'm like basically free. Dude.
- 3:03Basically free, all I would have to really pay for is parking.
- 3:06Right, get me, get me to the hiccup here because I'm
- 3:09struggling to see the obstacle. Well, the time it was sort of,
- 3:12it was a little bit of a time crunch.
- 3:13We had to come home from church. I had to eat, had to walk Rookie
- 3:17and I was like, I I can't, I can't pull this off because I'm
- 3:20going to have to walk from wherever I'm parking.
- 3:23My question. So I decided not to go.
- 3:25My question to you, though, is what would it take for you to go
- 3:31to a game by yourself? Because I've heard some people
- 3:41have tried it and they've actually enjoyed it.
- 3:42Like they enjoy the experience of not feeling obligated to have
- 3:45to entertain anybody. Right.
- 3:48Some people go there to to keep to to score the games, which is
- 3:53a skill I've yet to learn. Really, I love keeping.
- 3:56I love keeping score. You know I keep.
- 3:58Score 100% Yeah. I got to I, I got to figure that
- 4:02out a. 100% I don't remember. 30 and I still don't know.
- 4:06I think it was in high school because like when I I got called
- 4:11up to varsity as a sophomore and like barely, barely played that
- 4:15summer before school started up. And so like I had, I had to
- 4:20learn to keep book during summer ball because like, no, there's
- 4:24no like no one in the crowd or anything, right?
- 4:26It's summer ball in high school. So yeah, I had to learn.
- 4:29And I think one of the pictures taught me and it's, it's like
- 4:33soothing like it is. That is what I would do.
- 4:37I would, I think if it was like if I get a ticket under 50 bucks
- 4:41that had a decent seat, I would want a decent seat.
- 4:45I think. I think that would be my focus
- 4:48because I'm not someone who needs to get up during a game.
- 4:52I think I would have, I would, I would get some seeds, I'd bring
- 4:56my book and I'd just sit and I'd be set.
- 5:00I really would. And I'd do the beer vendor
- 5:02thing. If I did beer, I wouldn't get
- 5:04up. I would try not to pee the whole
- 5:06time. That's the way to go.
- 5:08Yeah, I think I would be in my seat the whole time and I would
- 5:11keep book keeping. Book is sweet.
- 5:13I'll teach you. It's not hard.
- 5:15Once you get the hang of it, you're like.
- 5:16This is simple. I'm going to need to learn.
- 5:18I'm genuinely ashamed of the fact that I don't know how to
- 5:21All right, good to know. Good to know.
- 5:25If I, if I, if I knew how to keep score, I would probably go
- 5:27to baseball games by myself a lot more.
- 5:29Yeah, I would need the day to be under $100.
- 5:34Oh, for sure. Yeah, like parking ticket.
- 5:37For yourself, for sure, yeah. You got to.
- 5:39You got to keep up, not. Under 100.
- 5:41Yeah, and then I'd it would be like guilt free thing.
- 5:44I might look into that honestly. Kind of it's kind of a nice,
- 5:49Yeah, nice idea, Yeah. Kind of kind of get the juicer
- 5:53flow in a little bit. All right, let's let's talk some
- 5:55current events here. Major League Baseball has come
- 5:58out and announced that they are considering implementing A6
- 6:04inning minimum for starting pitchers.
- 6:09Now I have a confession to make. I did I, I, I will recognize
- 6:14that when this headline first dropped, I texted you right away
- 6:17with like the eyes, eye emojis. And then you're like, oh, you
- 6:21like this idea. And I'm like, and I think, I
- 6:24think what I said to you is that I don't like, I don't like rules
- 6:28that force things. But of all the rules that Major
- 6:30League Baseball has proposed as of late, and to be honest with
- 6:35you, I didn't put much thought into all of the rules they
- 6:37proposed. But sure, I would imagine of the
- 6:39majority of rules that they proposed, this one for me gets
- 6:43to the heart of something that I want in baseball.
- 6:46But it's a root issue. It's a yeah, the root issue
- 6:49here. The problem is I, I, I took some
- 6:52time over the weekend to think about it and I think I'm walking
- 6:56back the idea of, of me actually liking it because, and it's not
- 7:01that I'm really changing my point of view on the, on this
- 7:04new 6th inning minimum idea. It's that is no, that's, that's
- 7:12what I'm trying to say. It's less of me changing my mind
- 7:14and more of me sticking to what I said initially in that I don't
- 7:19like the idea of things being forced.
- 7:22Do I want to see starting pitching regain the to, to use
- 7:27the word Major League Baseball, use prestige?
- 7:29Do I want, do I want starting pitching to recover that, to
- 7:33retain that, to reintroduce that into the game?
- 7:36Yes. Do I want Major League Baseball
- 7:40to have their grubby little hands involved forcing you via
- 7:46rule, via regulation, via threat of of penalty?
- 7:53Do I want it to be accomplished that way?
- 7:55No, we don't like getting political on here, but I kind of
- 7:59feel the same way about the government.
- 8:00It's like, do I want the government?
- 8:02I'm going to grab a little hands on, on my hard earned money on,
- 8:06on what I can and can't do at my house, things like that.
- 8:11It's kind of same way with Major League Baseball.
- 8:13It's like I, I want starting pitching to be more of a thing
- 8:17because I'm over and I think I, I, I probably speak for you
- 8:20here. I'm over the whole like opener,
- 8:23starter experiment. In fact, I was never really on
- 8:25board with that to begin with, but I want it to come back
- 8:31naturally. I don't want it to be forced
- 8:33upon us. I don't want there to be this
- 8:35weird threat of penalty because then it, it's less about it's,
- 8:42it's less about philosophy, a change in philosophy or a return
- 8:47to a former philosophy and more about enforcement.
- 8:51And it's like, if that's how you're going to reintroduce
- 8:53starting pitching into the game, I'd rather just keep things the
- 8:56way they are. Because you're eventually, and
- 8:59we talked about this with, with the pitch clock and other things
- 9:02is you're going to get to the point where there's so much that
- 9:04you have to be aware of and be thinking of that it become, it's
- 9:08like I texted you, it becomes a board game.
- 9:11I don't want Major League Baseball to become a board game
- 9:13where you have to whip out the, the rules pamphlet and go, well,
- 9:17we can do this, but we can't do this.
- 9:19We can do this after the 6th inning.
- 9:21We have to pull our DH if our pitcher has thrown only 5
- 9:25innings. It's like at that point, you're
- 9:28going to, you're going to implement so many rules and
- 9:31regulations that you're, you're, you're molding the outcome of
- 9:37the game almost. And you're, you're, you're
- 9:39putting so much, so many boundaries around the game
- 9:43itself that there's only going to be so many avenues or out
- 9:48courses of action that you can take as a manager, as a player,
- 9:51whatever. I just, I just want it to happen
- 9:56naturally, that's all. I think if, if you were to take
- 10:04an outside stance, an outside view, I think the game could
- 10:11already feel that way in certain ways.
- 10:14You know what I mean? Like imagine describing AI don't
- 10:23know, like a like a drop, a drop 3rd strike or a Bach or you
- 10:29know, some some weird thing to a fan that has never like really
- 10:33paid attention to the game before.
- 10:35Like imagine describing that and you're like, well, that's this
- 10:37is like a very technical thing or even a check swing, you know,
- 10:41being such a like a subjective rule.
- 10:48I think it is something that we would probably get used to.
- 10:52I think you and I are very obviously AL side of things, but
- 11:01I think if you were to look at our generation and older from
- 11:05the NL side of things, I think there's a lot of aspects to
- 11:09managing that we miss. And I when we were talking, you
- 11:16know, a few years ago about a universal DH, you know, just
- 11:21across both leagues, we were talking about, you know, like
- 11:26double switches. And we were just, we were
- 11:29talking about some of the management skill from the NL
- 11:32side. Now, I'm not saying that
- 11:34outweighed a universal DH, OK, I'm pro universal DH, you're pro
- 11:40universal DH. But there are aspects that we
- 11:43lost and there was no real way to get them back into the game.
- 11:48Then I think you could argue that this could potentially
- 11:51bring back a little bit more of this management, a little more
- 11:56of this gut feel instead of being so calculated, instead of
- 12:02being so analytical heavy. And the proposal, I don't even
- 12:07know if this was official or not, but the the exceptions were
- 12:14over 100 pitches, excuse me, over 100 pitches, giving up four
- 12:22plus runs. The exceptions were if the
- 12:26pitcher suffers an injury, which I would hope.
- 12:28I mean, does that even need to be stated?
- 12:31Guy goes out there, blows his elbow out, buddy.
- 12:34You got to stick it out. You got two more Indians here.
- 12:36I don't. I don't know what to tell you.
- 12:37You have 75 pitches left, Sir. I'm going to need to see what
- 12:40that other arm can do. Yeah, we'd see a we'd see a huge
- 12:45rise in ambidextrous pitching. I'll just say that.
- 12:49No, the exceptions are the pitcher suffers an injury,
- 12:52exceeds 100 pitches, allows 4 earned runs, and I think those
- 12:57are the ones we know of as of now.
- 13:01I think let me ask you this and not that, not that this is a
- 13:06part of the proposal or not, but like if we got this, would you
- 13:14give up the three batter minimum by bullpen guys, by relievers?
- 13:20Are you asking me or are you just?
- 13:22Asking like that that rule you personally like because the the
- 13:25three or end end of the inning kind of conversation.
- 13:31Do you and I I'm I'm trying to be fully transparent here.
- 13:35I don't remember my my initial take when they when they
- 13:40proposed A3 hitter minimum for pitchers.
- 13:42Do were we on board with that or were we?
- 13:45I think we were pretty indifferent about it.
- 13:47I feel pretty indifferent about it.
- 13:48I think it has eliminated again, we're we're losing certain
- 13:52aspects of the game. And I'm asking what the risk
- 13:54reward is for that. Like, what is the reward that
- 13:57we've received for this? Right.
- 13:59And I guess it's probably speed up the game because of pitching
- 14:02changes and, you know, the five to 10 extra minutes that you may
- 14:06get over the span of a game of a reliever warming up.
- 14:10But what I'm saying is that like, we've lost a lefty
- 14:14specialist, right? Like we've lost the art of a
- 14:19certain amount of things. We've like, I think pinch
- 14:21hitting is is pretty dead. Like there's a lot of things
- 14:25that we've lost in this game. And it just makes you wonder
- 14:30that if this six pitch, you know, the six inning minimum
- 14:35could reintroduce certain things that we used to have.
- 14:40Is that crazy to say? Like, I personally all all air
- 14:45on the side of me being a fan of it because it does give us
- 14:48something. It does allow a manager to have
- 14:51to play chess a little bit more. And I don't think there's
- 14:56anything wrong with game planning or, or having a, you
- 14:59know, an idea of what you want to do in case this happens.
- 15:03But at the same time, like it's, it's broken down.
- 15:06I'm I'm so sick of numbers being shoved in my face of like second
- 15:10time through the lineup, what's the OPS third time through the
- 15:14lineup, what's the OPS like? I enough, enough is enough.
- 15:18Like at the same time, does that have to be just just rubbed
- 15:26across the entire universal thinking of like, what if this
- 15:29guy's in a groove? What if this guy is feeling
- 15:32better tonight than he's has been in the past?
- 15:34Like it's, it's so calculated that I'm exhausted.
- 15:40I will. On that note, I will say it was
- 15:41very refreshing this year to see Tanner Howe be given a long
- 15:46enough leash where he's able to pitch into the line of a third
- 15:51time. Whereas years prior, the second
- 15:56he finished his second cycle through the lineup, he was out.
- 15:59It didn't matter how well he's pitching because the numbers
- 16:02showed that he just cannot pitch well enough to warrant keeping
- 16:08him in for a third time through the lineup.
- 16:10And this year something approach change.
- 16:13He he made some some mechanical tweaks.
- 16:16Andrew Bailey got in and and made some changes to the way he
- 16:20goes about certain hitters in a throughout the lineup.
- 16:24And we're able to see that now. And I know for some people that
- 16:27hear that they may not care, They may go, OK, second time
- 16:29through the lineup, third time through the lineup.
- 16:30It doesn't matter. I just want to see good
- 16:32pitching, whether it's from the starter or from a pen.
- 16:35I hear you. But as as somebody like myself
- 16:39who appreciates a a starter who can be a horse for you that can,
- 16:44I know it's crazy pitch into like, I don't know, the 7th
- 16:48inning. It's just like it's it.
- 16:51It's refreshing to see when a guy's given a a long, he's given
- 16:55a longer leash than maybe he was in the past.
- 16:58But going back to my point, though, about this proposed
- 17:02minimum, I just don't like that that being forced.
- 17:05I like seeing it come come about naturally to and again to use
- 17:10Tanner Howick as an example, like.
- 17:11It. It it shifted into him going
- 17:14deeper into games and Major League Baseball didn't have
- 17:17their hands on it. But with this minimum, then you
- 17:19run into the you run into the you, you run the risk of
- 17:26injuries. And and I saw a lot of people
- 17:28talking about how well Major League Baseball has seen a
- 17:31higher rate of injuries from from pitchers than I don't know
- 17:36ever or since a certain date and time.
- 17:40And and they're they're counter to that is is Indians minimum.
- 17:43So like well. What if?
- 17:45What if the counter? What if the counter causes,
- 17:52causes 85% on this pitch, 90% on this pitch, all geared up to
- 17:58100% for this O2 count and then I can dial it back to 90%.
- 18:03We talked to those old school guys in, in our, in our, you
- 18:07know, Mount Rushmore of pitchers.
- 18:09That's how they all talk. That's how they all talk.
- 18:13You know, it can't, it can't be just 100% every single pitch,
- 18:18putting our bodies to the limits because we've seen how how
- 18:21shortened performance we're getting.
- 18:24We've already seen it like a Paul Skean's velocity drop,
- 18:28right? And now everyone's fearful.
- 18:31What I'm saying is that, like, does it bring back the idea of
- 18:36pitching and not just throwing? Can we bring back the skill of
- 18:42pitching and not so much of, you know, the, the typical outcomes
- 18:51that we're used to, right? And it's, it's weird to say that
- 18:55like, you know, what's the, the strikeout record in the game is
- 18:59like 1920, you know, when we're not even sniffing that anymore
- 19:05in a, in a day where strikeouts are happening more often, but
- 19:10it's because pitchers aren't sticking around long enough.
- 19:14It's very strange and I don't know, I don't maybe they're, I
- 19:23heard this idea that I thought was pretty cool a few years ago
- 19:26when this when this first started getting talked about was
- 19:29like the before universal DH showed up was like, what if we
- 19:35you lose your DH when the starter comes out?
- 19:39You know, and if we're yanking starters out in the third inning
- 19:44and you're losing your DH that, you know, like does it promote
- 19:47more athleticism to get that DH into the field more regularly?
- 19:51Does it motivate that manager to, you know, use his bench more
- 19:56and and navigate that a little bit more?
- 19:59Does it motivate AGM to have a deeper bench and not so much of
- 20:04this up and down thing? So like I'm just wondering what
- 20:09is the ripple effect from this right like?
- 20:12We talked about bigger bases for safety, but no, that's actually
- 20:16been an uptick in stolen bases, right?
- 20:19You combine that with the limited pick off moves.
- 20:21What are the limited pick off moves for?
- 20:23Well, this was the short and the length of a game.
- 20:25Now it's the uptick of more stolen bases, right?
- 20:29So what is the ripple effect outside of this 6 plus inning?
- 20:33Is it just about longevity or can we get other positive things
- 20:38to happen? That's where I'm at with this.
- 20:41I, I, I'm erring on the side of being for it.
- 20:48I and, and I'd like the art of pitching.
- 20:53I think that's an incredible thing to watch.
- 20:56And you and I joke about like, you know, I don't even know if
- 21:01we've said this on air or not, but like the lack of baseball IQ
- 21:05that we've seen these guys. Like the athleticism is through
- 21:07the roof, but it's terrible IQ. And there's examples.
- 21:10All of that's not just us like you, you hear these
- 21:12broadcasters, coaches, coaches, scouts, who who was it that I
- 21:16mentioned? I heard say that was like Tim
- 21:18Kirchen. I think you you don't think Tim
- 21:20Kirchen has has been around the block.
- 21:22He's he's seen generation after generation of player and he's
- 21:26sitting there going, yeah, these guys are are through the roof
- 21:29when it comes to to talent and and ability.
- 21:32But the baseball IQ sucks. I'm just saying that like we
- 21:35spent decades, decades watching starting pitchers do this anyway
- 21:44with less injuries. How are we going to sit here and
- 21:48say this is going to cause more injuries?
- 21:52Well, on that note, Spencer asked a great question in the
- 21:55chat. He says if the trade off is
- 21:57long, if the trade off is long term better health for pitchers
- 22:00and keeping the stars in the game, is it worth it?
- 22:06Yes. But I, I guess my, my answer to
- 22:08that would be why? Why can't it be both?
- 22:11Like why I, I heard somebody the other day say, or maybe was it,
- 22:17was it you were we talking about it or on a broadcast or
- 22:19something? But somebody said that we just
- 22:23like ran. I think it was you actually that
- 22:25we just randomly pulled 100 pitches like out of thin air.
- 22:30And that seems that's like this magic number for pitch counts.
- 22:33When, when, if you look at the data, maybe it wasn't you that
- 22:37said it. Maybe I'm, it may have been
- 22:39talking about on a broadcast where they're just talking about
- 22:42like, why are, why are we so focused on when a pitcher hits
- 22:47100 a hundred pitch Max that he he's done?
- 22:51Like why is that? Why can't we, Why can't we
- 22:55adjust our approach and philosophy on on pitching to
- 22:59your point that you made earlier, not going 100% every
- 23:02single pitch, learning to manage your body, learning to manage
- 23:07your workload throughout a game so you can go deeper but also
- 23:11stay healthy and stay on the diamond.
- 23:14Why can't? Why can't it be both?
- 23:16Why can't it be both, right? I it was a few weeks ago and you
- 23:21have to have the caveat of the fact that like we have had a lot
- 23:24of big time starters go down this year, but I think MLB now
- 23:29put out the top 10, ER, as in baseball a few weeks ago and
- 23:36eight of the names were below the league average fastball.
- 23:41Their velocity was slower than the league average fastball.
- 23:45Did you see the counter to that where it was like the top 10 Max
- 23:50velocity or like the top ten highest velocities in baseball,
- 23:54like nine of them? Are all out on injury.
- 23:56Have hit the shelf, have gone under the knife and I think
- 23:59hunter green hunter hunter green was the only one who had and I'm
- 24:02not going to wish I'll on the kid but like it it if if the
- 24:05rest of that sample size is any indication.
- 24:09Like, I just could be, could be. I think it's, I think it's
- 24:12unfair to just blanket the statement of like 100 pitches
- 24:16equals injury or more than 100 pitches equals this.
- 24:19Like it's what those pitches are.
- 24:22And to sit here and say all pitches are created equal,
- 24:25that's not the case. We know that.
- 24:27We've seen that. We've witnessed that for
- 24:28decades. And again, like if we think
- 24:31about all of these Mount Rushmore names, that's how they
- 24:37talk. That's how they pitched.
- 24:40And it was more of a chess match.
- 24:42I saw. I don't know if you saw that
- 24:44quick. Yeah.
- 24:44I mean, this, we can go on this tangent forever, but it was like
- 24:47a Barry Bonds short, little like clip of him watching an iPad of
- 24:53an at bat he had against Greg Maddox.
- 24:55And he was saying all the things.
- 24:57And then Greg Maddox is somewhere else watching the same
- 24:59clip, and he's talking about how he's going to attack Barry
- 25:02Bonds. And Barry Bonds knew that.
- 25:06When's the last time you've heard one of those
- 25:07conversations? When's the last time?
- 25:12Because every hitter's, every hitter's response is, I just
- 25:15want to get on time. How about it's like know the guy
- 25:20that you're facing and understand an approach of when
- 25:24certain things happen in certain counts, then how a pitcher is
- 25:28going to attack you. Like the the mental side of a
- 25:32game is just really changed. And I'm not saying we need to be
- 25:36this way or that way. I'm just saying that like, I
- 25:41think this could have a very good ripple effect, even though
- 25:46we're so worked up about a big rule change that is game board,
- 25:52you know, like it's like, I get that.
- 25:55I definitely understand that argument, but it feels like
- 25:58there could be some good things that come out of it.
- 26:00It's probably not the best cop, but it's it's just the first one
- 26:03that came to mind. It's like, it's like Major
- 26:05League Baseball's England and the game and the players are the
- 26:1113 colonies. My my feeling on this whole
- 26:15pitcher minimum thing is like. Talk to them.
- 26:18Intentions may be good, but leave it up to the people leave
- 26:21it up to the game. Let let, like I said, let the
- 26:24philosophy calibrate itself or or adjust.
- 26:27I mean, I, I don't, I don't need the league jumping in, be like,
- 26:30hey, this is how it's going to be now.
- 26:33Sure. Well, this, he's going to be
- 26:34voted on. All of it is voted on.
- 26:36All these rules with the MLBPA are going to be a part of the
- 26:39equation. It either gets passed or it
- 26:40doesn't, right? It's like a bill in Congress.
- 26:43You know what I mean? Like MLBPA can shut this down
- 26:46and we won't see the light of day with this.
- 26:50No, but it well, again, it's, it's not the concept that I'm
- 26:54against. It's just the, it's the
- 26:55enforcement of it that is and and threat to threat of penalty.
- 26:59It's just going to be too much. And it, it's like, if you think,
- 27:04if you think that Major League Baseball is going to like pull
- 27:07back their they're going to go laissez faire, all of a sudden
- 27:10be like, Hey, we had this rule for three seasons.
- 27:15We're going to pull it back, but we're going to hope that you
- 27:17guys are going to do. It's not how that's going to it.
- 27:19It needs to come about naturally.
- 27:21And so if Major League Baseball does this, they're not, they're
- 27:24going to, it's going to be a rule until they decide to, to do
- 27:28away with it. It's not going to be, it's not
- 27:30going to be, Hey, we want this to be, to continue to be a
- 27:33thing, but we don't want to have any part in it anymore.
- 27:35It's it's either going to be all or nothing.
- 27:37And I just, I think that's that's too.
- 27:38Much. I mean, I think there's little
- 27:39things you can put that guideline out there with, right,
- 27:42like the mound visits. Everyone was up and roar about
- 27:44the mound. And I know this is like a way
- 27:47drastically less. It's like way less drastic.
- 27:50But the mound visit limitations, like now we don't even notice.
- 27:55I bet there's a lot of people that go to the game and don't
- 27:57even really pay attention to that on how many visits are
- 27:59left, right? It's not even really that much
- 28:01of a factor. But what if it's something as
- 28:04simple as that? Like, hey, if it's less than six
- 28:07innings, if your starter goes less than six innings, you lose
- 28:11a bench guy. Tell me what bench guy you're
- 28:14losing. Well, that.
- 28:15Right. Cross them off the list and you
- 28:17can't use them for the rest of the game.
- 28:18Like if there's some type of punishment where maybe it
- 28:22doesn't come into the play it like there's plenty of games we
- 28:25watch where we're not going to see every bench guy.
- 28:27Plenty of games. So what if there is one where
- 28:30it's like that is the punishment and sometimes it shows up,
- 28:34sometimes it doesn't. You know what I mean?
- 28:38Well, that line of thinking goes back to the beginning, like the
- 28:40very first conversation we had about any sort of major change
- 28:45in in ruler gameplay that Major League Baseball try to
- 28:48introduce. And it was the thought that do
- 28:52what you're going to do, but don't affect the, I don't want
- 28:57to say integrity of the game, but like don't, don't do
- 29:01something that overly impacts the actual play of the game.
- 29:05And I, I think something like eliminating a bench guy would be
- 29:10one of those things that doesn't fall within that realm.
- 29:14It's not, you're not, if a guy falls short of the 6th inning
- 29:18minimum, you're not giving the other team two outs to start the
- 29:23next half inning or something. Because that would be, I'd be
- 29:25like, OK, now we're getting into serious board game mode here
- 29:29and, and we're starting to put all these penalties and
- 29:32restrictions into the game. A bench player removing a bench
- 29:36player, I think would be something that would, would
- 29:39serve as a good idea because it's like it, it certainly
- 29:41impacts the game. But to your point, there are
- 29:44plenty of games where that doesn't even, it doesn't even
- 29:46come into play. So it wouldn't even matter.
- 29:48So yeah, it's I'm on the fence about it.
- 29:53I, I know how I feel about the concept.
- 29:56Like I said, I I like, I think we.
- 29:58Want to? See more starting pitching.
- 30:00We could all agree that we would enjoy the outcome.
- 30:03It's the. It's how you get there.
- 30:05It's the process of of getting there.
- 30:07Yeah. And I don't fully.
- 30:09I don't disagree with you there. I don't know.
- 30:13We'll see. I did.
- 30:14I did read that it would take years.
- 30:16It would take. Years, years to implement this.
- 30:19So this this probably won't be something we we visit for a long
- 30:23time. It would take, it would take a
- 30:25long time, well #1 because we don't even have the next CBA
- 30:28until 2028 or. Something, yeah.
- 30:31But #2 I mean, it's, it's the fact that like, this has to go,
- 30:35this is a, this is a systematic change.
- 30:38This is the way you're bringing guys up through your system and
- 30:42the ripple effect of getting into college and youth ball, you
- 30:45know, like that's it changes a lot of the approach of pitching.
- 30:57Suck Aaron Judge. Fuck.
- 31:00We just talked about Aaron Judge last episode but I was unaware
- 31:05that he was knocking on the door.
- 31:06I forgot to be honest. Number 300.
- 31:09I think it was like. You get like oddly numb to what
- 31:12he's doing, man. I mean, it's crazy.
- 31:14So yeah, we haven't, we haven't talked since he had 300.
- 31:17I think it happened like the day after we recorded last.
- 31:20It did go figure. But wanted to get your thoughts
- 31:24on the on the mark. Wanted to get your thoughts on
- 31:27in my mind, in my, in my opinion, the ridiculous
- 31:31proposition that he's even within the realm of, of reaching
- 31:35any sort of home run record in, in terms of a career.
- 31:40Don't know. Don't know why that's even a
- 31:42conversation that's that's even taking place.
- 31:46Although your boy Juan Soto was like, yeah, I'd love to see him
- 31:49do it. Yet another instance of Juan
- 31:52Soto not having a feel for, you know, like just basic math.
- 31:58But give me your thoughts on on the feet.
- 32:00Give me your thoughts on I, I wanted to hear your take
- 32:04specifically on him specifically as a hitter, obviously, since
- 32:12we're talking home runs. But in terms of the the, the
- 32:17length of time that you've watched him as a hitter in, in
- 32:21the years that he's been up in the league, which as we know got
- 32:24up, he was a for all intents and purposes a late bloomer as it as
- 32:29it compares or. Relates to, I mean, he went, he
- 32:32went all the way through college, right?
- 32:34Yeah. I don't think he cracked in.
- 32:36I think 20 end of 2016 is when he made his debut with a
- 32:41September call up and then didn't do anything.
- 32:45Yeah. And then 17 looked pretty
- 32:47decent. So has there been a shift in his
- 32:54approach as a hitter as his career has gone on?
- 32:58Because I feel like if a guy is this talented and is capable of
- 33:03putting up the numbers seemingly year after year the judge is
- 33:06putting up right now, why then? Why then did this story not get
- 33:13started sooner? Because I, I, I have to put my,
- 33:17my anti Yankee bias aside here as a baseball fan, I would have
- 33:21loved to have been able to, to follow the, the possible path to
- 33:27a career home run record from judge as a, as a baseball fan.
- 33:31But unfortunately we're not going to get that.
- 33:33But it sucks because what he's doing year after year, if you
- 33:37were to extrapolate that, if you were to give him the time
- 33:40required, assuming he stays healthy, I feel like he does
- 33:44that, but for some reason just didn't get an an early enough
- 33:48start to enable him the opportunity to do that.
- 33:51So what do you think in your opinion has has occurred?
- 33:57Probably I would say the last handful of years, especially
- 34:01given his his power surge. What do you think has happened?
- 34:04What do you think has changed? Two things I want to get out of
- 34:08the way before I get into it. Number one, I'm if you're a
- 34:13broadcaster, I won't, I won't say aficionado, but like in
- 34:17appreciation for broadcasting, Ryan Ruko on the call killed it
- 34:22again. Ryan Ruko to me is going to be
- 34:26one of the best when he gets like a full time broadcasting
- 34:29job. Number two, it was on a three O
- 34:32count, which he hasn't hit a home run on a three O count in
- 34:34like 2 years. So that was pretty neat and it
- 34:36was like six or seven inches inside.
- 34:40He pulled his hands in and just yanked it down the line.
- 34:43And this this was following the intentional walk for Soto,
- 34:46correct? It was because Soto had the four
- 34:49home runs in two games. So Grady Sizemore getting
- 34:52immediately introduced to some crazy, some crazy hitters going
- 34:59on. But the I mean, he's pretty
- 35:07polarizing for his methods that he teaches.
- 35:11But that teacher man, old guy that he goes to, he's a chubby
- 35:16old guy and he talks about like this like flick and he kind of
- 35:20it's it's a little bit of a barrel dump, but it's it's been
- 35:26something that judges adopted piss.
- 35:28Like you can go back even I think they were showing clips of
- 35:31his first career home run. You can go back and see that.
- 35:35And it does not look like mechanically anything close to
- 35:39what he's doing now. And he talks about it in
- 35:44interviews and stuff that it like it took some time to invest
- 35:48into that, really buy into it fully, practice that in the
- 35:53offseason. And then it's just kind of
- 35:55blossom into what this is. And it's more of a mechanical
- 35:59approach than anything else. And then you watched him like,
- 36:04you know, 17/18/1920 even you started talking about like the
- 36:09number of strikeouts. So it was like, all right, the
- 36:12mechanics are there. We can see this guy's got crazy
- 36:14pop. But now let's start working on,
- 36:18you know, our hot and cold zones.
- 36:21And now you've watched him start to lay off of that soft and away
- 36:25stuff, you know, the slider down and out that he usually pulls
- 36:29off of the fastball up and in all of this stuff started to
- 36:33come about. And then he starts using right
- 36:36field more. And now he would, you could
- 36:39argue he, you know, prefers that ball away to stay away with it.
- 36:44And then it was like, all right, well, let's bust him in.
- 36:46Let's bust him in with, you know, fastballs in and, and
- 36:50watch him get tied up. So he's like, all right, well,
- 36:53let me take care of the fastball in.
- 36:55And now this year is obviously last year and this year, I think
- 36:58what you've seen is like the full on complete hitter of Aaron
- 37:04Judge. The mechanics are in check,
- 37:06right? The approach is in check.
- 37:09I can take care of that fastball and I can still get to it.
- 37:12I can stay, you know, I can spit on the stuff that's down and out
- 37:16and I can stay away on on that away, you know, ball in the zone
- 37:20and just use Yankee Stadium to to his benefit.
- 37:24So it's it's just like this full complete hitter and it speaks
- 37:29volumes when I know we're not like in love with batting
- 37:32average anymore as a game. But like this man's hitting 332
- 37:37at this very second with an 1168 OPS.
- 37:42He's slugging in the seven hundreds, slugging like we have
- 37:49guys in this lineup, they don't even have an OPS in the seven
- 37:52hundreds. It's insane what this guy's
- 37:55doing. So this is like to be the most
- 37:59complete and I think when it's all said and done, we'll
- 38:04probably look back at like a, the way we look back at like a
- 38:11Jacob degrom or like a Tim Lin succumb guys that were like so
- 38:15dominant in this period in their career.
- 38:18But when you look at like the overall career numbers, you're
- 38:21like now that doesn't really tell the whole story.
- 38:23I think Judge is going to fall into that category.
- 38:25I could see him finishing in the 4:50 to 500 range in home runs
- 38:31and and you're really not going to be able to look at like the
- 38:35grand scheme of numbers and compare him to the big names and
- 38:39say, no, this guy was up there with them because of the late
- 38:43start, because of this mechanical thing.
- 38:46But from here it's just like, all right, we'll stay healthy,
- 38:51age well and put up numbers because it seems like he's
- 38:57really kind of clicked on all levels.
- 39:02Fastest player in MLB history to reach the 300 career home run
- 39:06mark did it 955 games and in his 3400 and 31st at bat.
- 39:16The previous leaders for those marks, Ralph Kiner, reached 300
- 39:20homers in his 1080 seventh game. So I was like, what?
- 39:24I'll get 130 games more. 100 and quick math 32132 I believe and
- 39:35then Babe Ruth did it in his 3800 and 31st at bat which is
- 39:39400 ABS fewer for judge. Then again, like I think we can
- 39:45all agree that pitching has never been better than it is now
- 39:51as far as Velo and movement. Yeah, we don't need to pull at
- 39:53the thread. Of not going to pull at that
- 39:54other. Part of thread, but yeah, we
- 39:56don't need to pull pull the thread of errors.
- 39:58And yeah, we can appreciate greatness in that time.
- 40:02And this is greatness. I've said it time and time
- 40:07again, it's all relative. Because if it was so easy when
- 40:13Babe Ruth was doing it, then how come everyone was how how come
- 40:17nobody else was doing what he was doing?
- 40:20It's all relative. That's all you need to know
- 40:24about the whole, like generation to generation thing.
- 40:27Yeah. Playing against plumbers.
- 40:28OK. Well, why weren't all the
- 40:30plumbers? And if there's just plumbers
- 40:31playing plumbers, why weren't all the rest of the plumbers
- 40:35doing what Babe Ruth was doing? That's all.
- 40:36I mean, it's it's it's it's relative.
- 40:38It's it's simple. Let's talk, let's talk some
- 40:44unfortunate IL news. Tyler Glass now placed on the 15
- 40:48day IL. Right in time for our fantasy
- 40:51match up. With some elbow tendonitis,
- 40:54yeah. Little little tangent here.
- 40:58The Three O Tech Fantasy League Nate and I have arrived.
- 41:03We are now meeting in the semifinals of the Three O Tech
- 41:06Fantasy League I. Don't remember last time this
- 41:08happened. A match up nobody saw coming.
- 41:11They didn't believe in us. They said there's no way they
- 41:14end up in the semis and here we are.
- 41:17We're here. A trip to the Championship on
- 41:21the line. I'm coming off of bye week.
- 41:23I'm pretty sluggish. I.
- 41:24Got Oh yeah, OK, that's a good point.
- 41:27OK, so we we talk all the time about like the play out, the
- 41:30expanded postseason and like the effect it has on the team to get
- 41:33the first round bye. I've had I've been on both
- 41:36sides. I've had that by and I've I've
- 41:39this is now my my first time fighting to get into the next
- 41:43round. And I got to say you're tapped.
- 41:46I'm I'm I'm feeling what the Phillies were saying what a year
- 41:51or two ago and they're like, no, we want to we want to be
- 41:54playing. I I feel the effects of that and
- 41:58I'm on board with with just give me a match up.
- 42:02I don't care. I don't care who I'm up against,
- 42:03just give me the match up because I'm I'm tapped in so.
- 42:07These these two weeks I think I've checked my line up like
- 42:10three or four times. I don't even know why you did it
- 42:12that many times. You're not playing anybody.
- 42:14But now. Just that and drop some dudes.
- 42:17But now you're playing me so. Lock it to.
- 42:20You're going to lock it back in? Yeah.
- 42:23Lock it in. Yeah, Tyler got us out of the 15
- 42:27day aisle with right elbow tendonitis.
- 42:30It's his second stint this year. I'll be honest with you, I don't
- 42:33remember. The first, it just happened.
- 42:35It just happened. I think he came.
- 42:37He was supposed to come back for a day and make a start.
- 42:41He's been out for a while. He hasn't pitched in.
- 42:44I don't know how long he he had like a back thing, didn't he?
- 42:50And then he was out. They they did a 15 dayer and
- 42:55then he was supposed to come back.
- 42:57He was something he was supposed to come back and start and then
- 43:02the day he was supposed to start, they put him on another
- 43:05IL stint. So he I don't even let me see.
- 43:09I don't think there was a start in between.
- 43:11Early July with back tightness. Yeah.
- 43:15OK. Yeah, I don't.
- 43:16I barely remember that. Interesting.
- 43:18So and he please hold, please hold.
- 43:25OK, so he made two starts. Oh, he made four starts.
- 43:34OK, so he pitched on July 5th, IL stint came back the 24th,
- 43:42July 30th, August 5th and then August 11th and then another
- 43:48stint. So he made four starts in
- 43:50between those stints. This is just freaking par for
- 43:57the course for the Dodgers man like this is weird.
- 44:00All right, hear me out though. Par for the course for the
- 44:02Dodgers if you take a look at Tyler Glasna's career.
- 44:07I wasn't, I, I wasn't familiar with this until I looked it up.
- 44:12I'm already chalking this this season up for Tyler Glasna was a
- 44:16win for him personally. The amount of starts he's made.
- 44:18He this is his career high. That's he's, he's already made
- 44:22his career. He's made 22 starts.
- 44:25His previous career high was last year, which he made 21.
- 44:30So honestly, if Tyler Glasson didn't make another start the
- 44:33rest of the season like that would be unfortunate, but you
- 44:37know, good for him. The whole thing was like, oh,
- 44:40well, can he stay healthy? Can he stay healthy?
- 44:42Sure. He this is his second trip to
- 44:44the IL. We've we've, we've acknowledged
- 44:47that. But to come over to LA, the
- 44:51microscope is is a little more intense I would imagine.
- 44:55And he puts up a career high and game started.
- 44:57I don't think any of that matters.
- 44:59I think he needs to be back. For the personally though, I'm
- 45:02not, I'm not saying for the team or or the the postseason.
- 45:06I'm just saying for him. I'm just saying the perception
- 45:08is is only going to be positive if he is back in pitching in the
- 45:12postseason, which I'm assuming that's what this is about.
- 45:17I would go ahead and assume it. I don't like.
- 45:23Like hold on, hold on. Are you?
- 45:25Are, are you saying that this is a are you?
- 45:28That's what I'm saying, that this is a strategic move here.
- 45:31I don't, I don't, I don't like calling fake or non fake on
- 45:35injuries, but we've seen a ridiculous amount of IO
- 45:40manipulation, ghosting for for yeah, that's a thing.
- 45:45So to sit there and and say that's not and every injury is,
- 45:48is legit, that's naive. I think this is a little bit of
- 45:54load management. I think that's what that is.
- 45:56And the same thing of what we witnessed with Kershaw for the
- 45:58first, I don't know, 3-4 months of the season.
- 46:02But can If you're the Dodgers, can you afford to do that,
- 46:05though you're only three games up in the West?
- 46:08They're in, you know they're in. And, and it's like, I think this
- 46:14is what you're going to start seeing with expanded postseason
- 46:17rock, with expanded postseason teams getting in.
- 46:21I think if we're going to be if we're going to analyze every
- 46:24single everything and put everything under the microscope
- 46:27in this game, I can guarantee you that there are teams already
- 46:30changing their philosophy on how they're approaching this
- 46:34offseason and saying or I mean this postseason and saying, hey,
- 46:38like, look at the amount of teams that have had a first
- 46:40round buy and gotten to where they need to be.
- 46:43Look at how many teams have gone in through the wild card and
- 46:45gotten deeper. I don't I don't know how much
- 46:49teams are prioritizing winning the division at this point.
- 46:53I'm not going to say every team is of that philosophy.
- 46:57But to sit here and say that no teams are, that's got to be in
- 47:00the back of your mind somewhere. And it's like, hey, you know,
- 47:04maybe that's what this team needs.
- 47:06There's a little bit of kick in the rear and say, hey, you
- 47:08didn't win the division. You haven't done anything yet.
- 47:14That ring is not super impressive from a few years ago.
- 47:18So here it is. Let's get into the wild card and
- 47:22and be the underdog, be the team that everyone thinks wasn't good
- 47:25enough to win the division. I don't know whatever.
- 47:28What I'm saying is that like the manipulation happens.
- 47:34I think if they're in, they're in.
- 47:37I would still be fearful of playing that team and this is
- 47:41all about just having him healthy and for all the reasons
- 47:44you just stated. This is the most starts.
- 47:46I don't know, innings wise it's got to be pretty close to career
- 47:49high and innings too. I actually didn't check that I
- 47:51can check. So just just, you know, just a
- 47:55little food for thought, that's all.
- 47:59He is currently logged through this point of the season has
- 48:03logged 134 innings and that is in fact a career high as well.
- 48:09Previous career high last year was was his career high for both
- 48:13marks. Game started last year 21
- 48:15innings pitched 120. This year as I mentioned 22
- 48:20start. So he has topped his previous
- 48:22high and this inning 134 top. Enter Enter in that Jonah clip,
- 48:29That Jonah Hill clip in Moneyball where they're asking
- 48:32about like, are we still considering this a set a
- 48:35success? Right.
- 48:35They're going through the season, they're going through
- 48:37the season. Do we still?
- 48:38And he's like, if we're within four games of the of the
- 48:41division by this time, yes, I think this is a success.
- 48:47Who's to say the Dodgers aren't doing the same thing?
- 48:49The Dodgers, I feel like are a team that are very focused and
- 48:53concerned with optics. So like I feel like the I, I
- 48:58hear your point on teams. At some point the overall optics
- 49:01have to be hoisting a trophy and not winning a division, you know
- 49:05what I mean? Yeah, but are far are we giving
- 49:08the short term optics I no, I hear you, but are we giving the
- 49:11Dodgers too much credit and and the on saying that they've
- 49:13evolved they've. Matured to that point.
- 49:16That's my mindset. I was talking with a Co worker
- 49:18the other day. He's a he's a Dallas Cowboys fan
- 49:20and he's like you and I are the same in the way that like the
- 49:24regular season does not matter. It just needs to end with a
- 49:29trophy. You can sneak in as a wild card
- 49:32or you can go undefeated and take the division with Storm,
- 49:37but it doesn't matter unless there's a trophy.
- 49:40The Dodgers fit into that category.
- 49:42So if this is the Jonah Hill mentality of like, just stay the
- 49:47course. This was the plan.
- 49:49We're load managing a certain, you know, amount of guys with
- 49:52certain names and we're good enough.
- 49:56I don't know what their strength of schedule looks like on the
- 49:58way out, but these are all part of the equation, man.
- 50:01I don't know. Or it's real and the guy is, you
- 50:05know, hurting a little. Bit well, the other thing you
- 50:07got to keep in mind too. I don't know if I let's say let
- 50:11let's play naive here. Let's say that they are OK with
- 50:14the wild card and that's actually what they're planning
- 50:17for. They're hoping for the wild card
- 50:18'cause they don't want the break.
- 50:21That that way of thinking might have worked last year, the year
- 50:24before. You don't have any pitching
- 50:27right now. You need the break.
- 50:29You need the chance to reset to get guys healthy again.
- 50:34I get that, but you've probably already made this decision with
- 50:37certain names. I think Kershaw Glass now
- 50:41definitely fit in that category. But this was probably a Walker.
- 50:44Bueller's coming back and he's going to be healthy.
- 50:46Yamamoto is added to the to the rotation.
- 50:49You know what I mean? I think this is all, you know,
- 50:51part of the calculated thing. Where's my, where's my tinfoil
- 50:54hat? I'll put that puppy on.
- 50:55I don't know. There's no.
- 50:56Why not? Just ask questions, that's all.
- 50:59That's what I'm saying, hey. I hear you.
- 51:00I hear you Ask questions. Don't just take what you're
- 51:03given blindly. Ask questions.
- 51:06That's that's what you're supposed to do.
- 51:08There are no conspiracies surrounding Christian Yelich.
- 51:11However, Christian Yelich is officially out for the season.
- 51:14He was hoping, he even said I believe that there was no
- 51:17surgery planned earlier this summer, but that has since
- 51:21changed. He will now be out for the
- 51:22remainder of the season after compiling a resume this year,
- 51:28slashing 315, four O 6 and five O 4 with 11 homers and 42
- 51:32ribbies. This was certainly is bounce
- 51:39back the right word because didn't we already get the bounce
- 51:41back from Yelich? Sort of because I feel like I
- 51:45made this this prediction, but was that I think that was at the
- 51:49start of last season. I.
- 51:51Don't know. I don't think so.
- 51:51I would call this a comeback bounce back.
- 51:56Maybe I thought he had a bounce back last year, but it wasn't as
- 51:59impressive as I thought. The years are starting to run
- 52:02together. Maybe it was the year before
- 52:03that. I honestly don't remember.
- 52:06But yeah, All in all, solid year for Yelich.
- 52:10Tough blow for the Brewers, but they've won five straight.
- 52:13I think they're seven and three in the last 10.
- 52:15They're playing well. And as you and I were talking
- 52:17about before we hopped on, they're they're cruising to the
- 52:21division title at this point. I think they're what are they up
- 52:2511 on the Cardinals in the in the central.
- 52:28So that's all but official. And I think they're getting
- 52:33crazy good years out of their outfielders too.
- 52:35I mean, we know what Jackson Cheerio is doing, but I think
- 52:39this Garrett Mitchell kid and then the South S Freely kid from
- 52:42last year is like they're starting to, I think they're
- 52:46filling in the gaps. I think they're doing just fine
- 52:50and this is probably the moving forward group once the Yelich
- 52:56days are done. I do feel bad for Yelich though
- 52:58'cause this was he was doing well, man, he's doing well.
- 53:03I I love a good comeback story. And this, this feels different
- 53:07than like a Mike Trout thing, 'cause you're not constantly
- 53:09hearing the name Christian Yelich.
- 53:11It's like, oh man, yeah. This, I mean, this would be like
- 53:16a, this would be like if Chris Bryant came back next year and
- 53:19put up a 850 OPS. You know what I mean?
- 53:23Like you think this guy's dead in the water and we're you were
- 53:25done talking about him and then he puts together this kind of
- 53:28year. It just sucks that like there's
- 53:32certain names that are going to go down with injury history and
- 53:35that's just the way we're going to remember him.
- 53:37I think he's one of those guys. Too bad Brew crew though, damn.
- 53:44Are you are you taking them seriously now or have we turned
- 53:48a page here? Not yet.
- 53:50I could see the it's a soft division.
- 53:54OK, well, let's look beyond the division, though.
- 53:57Who? I mean, we just, we just went on
- 54:00and on about the Dodgers looking at the National League.
- 54:03Who are you? Who are you really concerned
- 54:06about? And I'm not saying there
- 54:07shouldn't be anybody you should be concerned about if you're the
- 54:10Brewers, But like, OK, you look at the Phillies, tied for the
- 54:17most wins in all of baseball. Well, what's the deal with the
- 54:21Yankees right now? They going to lose this game.
- 54:25It's a Little League classic. One nothing.
- 54:27Top nine. So Clay Holmes is coming in.
- 54:31You never know. Well, as of this minute, tied
- 54:34for the most wins in all of baseball with the, with the
- 54:39Yankees, Orioles and the Dodgers.
- 54:43And you're only if you're the Brewers, you're only a game
- 54:45behind them in the in the win column.
- 54:48The Dodgers, we know what they are.
- 54:52I mean, are we talking about a legitimate chance at the, at the
- 54:55very least the NLCS here if you're the Brewers and I'm not,
- 55:02I I don't feel one way or another.
- 55:04I'm just, I'm just throwing it out there.
- 55:08So who's lined up in the wild card?
- 55:11You've got Braves, Mets all in this conversation.
- 55:16At this very minute, the top three in order.
- 55:19You got the Padres, the D backs the Braves, and then knocking on
- 55:23the door, you've got the Mets two games back, the Giants four
- 55:25and the Cardinals. Five.
- 55:26See, that's what I'm saying. Let's let's just Fast forward
- 55:29and say the Dodgers somehow managed to hold on to the
- 55:31Division I I if I'm the Brewers, I don't know if I can handle
- 55:40what the Padres and Diamondbacks are about to do, You know what I
- 55:43mean? That's the way the matchups
- 55:46going to go. Why do I always why do I always
- 55:56get brain fog when I'm when I'm trying to map out the the
- 55:59postseason matchups? So if they finished with, let's
- 56:05just look at it snapshot right now.
- 56:07No, they're going to get the Phillies.
- 56:09They're going to get the No 'cause let's just say that the
- 56:12Phillies are going to have the best record in first round bye.
- 56:15They would then get the NL W winners, which would probably be
- 56:20the Dodgers. No, no, as the first round bye.
- 56:22Would you? You would get the.
- 56:26The Phillies would get the wild card team.
- 56:30The worst wild card team? Right after the that's the first
- 56:35round buy, right? Why?
- 56:37How does like the wild card buy is what I'm saying?
- 56:40Not like first round, like us. I'm saying like the wild card
- 56:43buy. So like, you're chilling, you
- 56:45got a week off, right? They're going to get the wild
- 56:48card team. That means if, if in fact, the
- 56:51Phillies hold on to the best record.
- 56:53They're going to get the wild card.
- 56:54OK. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:55Sorry. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I guess.
- 56:56So. The Brewers are going to get the
- 56:58wild card team. The Brewers.
- 56:59Are going to get whoever comes out of the West, unless of
- 57:03course, the Brewers find a way to have the best record in the
- 57:07NL and get the wild card team, which is either going to be the
- 57:11Dodgers, the Padres or the Diamondbacks.
- 57:15Are you taking the Brewers over any three of those teams?
- 57:20I'm not. Maybe the D backs Padre, I don't
- 57:26know. There's I know the D backs.
- 57:30I mean, I think they got swept this weekend, but I.
- 57:33The lows are a little low with the with the D backs, yeah.
- 57:36Exactly. Yeah, that's what I'm trying to
- 57:37say. They've over the course of the
- 57:39last month, maybe even 2, they've been playing very, very,
- 57:43very well. I feel like I can see myself
- 57:48going with the Brewers over the D backs.
- 57:50Those other two, maybe not, but it just takes, it just takes a
- 57:56series or two to get hot and you're in the you're in the
- 57:58NLCS. Yeah, I I just think the NL is
- 58:04too good. Yeah, I don't know it honestly
- 58:12what's going to dictate a lot of this is who comes out of the
- 58:15West. That's 100.
- 58:17Percent at the top. At the top.
- 58:19And like, again, I I even though the skit is happening, like the
- 58:24Phillies are still still this way, you know what I'm saying?
- 58:28Like the Brewers have been dominant, they're just now tying
- 58:31the record for wins in that column, right?
- 58:35And but. Yeah.
- 58:38The Phillies, I mean, you got to expect their a, a, a switch to
- 58:41get flipped some point. Phillies go take that that best
- 58:46record in the NL and you're talking a Brewers match up with
- 58:51either with the West winner and the West winner is going to be
- 58:55three, one of three good teams. I feel like we have that wrong.
- 59:05I don't think we do. I think the Phillies will get
- 59:08the wild card team. It's a top seed versus the
- 59:11bottom seed. But there's three seeds coming
- 59:20out of the wild card, which we already know.
- 59:21I don't know why I'm overthinking this.
- 59:25I. Don't know.
- 59:26It's because it's confusing. There's a million teams in the
- 59:29postseason now. It used to be much simpler, you
- 59:32know, It just went straight to the LDS.
- 59:34I sure did sometimes a little more cutthroat to get that wild
- 59:38card spot. But if you were that wild card
- 59:41team, you earned it. You earned it.
- 59:45Yeah, it'll it'll just be interesting to see who comes out
- 59:48of the West on top. I'll be honest with you.
- 59:52If if what we talked about, if the Dodgers are like, hey, let's
- 59:55just punt on the division. Let's take the wild card route.
- 1:00:00I'm just going to say it right now.
- 1:00:03I could see him getting bounced in the wild card, I really
- 1:00:06could. Because we're super used to it.
- 1:00:08I really could used to see, but like we're we this is just a
- 1:00:13deal. I I know we say, oh, the
- 1:00:14Dodgers, the Dodgers, the Dodgers every year it seems.
- 1:00:17But like I think we very well know this is a different Dodgers
- 1:00:20team. The makeup is different.
- 1:00:21The amount of money shockingly, somehow is on a different level.
- 1:00:28And even with the injuries, I feel like on paper, Dodgers
- 1:00:33shouldn't be a team that gets bounced out of the wild card
- 1:00:36should they end up there. But we know that these playoff
- 1:00:39series are not won on paper and with the state of their
- 1:00:43rotation, I I could see I could see them getting bounced in the
- 1:00:48wild card. I really could.
- 1:00:50That's the other, that's the other conversation is that if
- 1:00:53they want to go the wild card route, you need more pitching.
- 1:00:57Which was my point of I don't think they are punting on the
- 1:01:00division because they need the rest.
- 1:01:02Some teams just. Prefer to roll right into it
- 1:01:05they need. The rest, I think they're OK
- 1:01:06with that being the fall back. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:01:08I'm not saying they're like purposely losing the division
- 1:01:11when it comes to the stretch, but I think that there are a lot
- 1:01:15of teams that are just very OK getting into the wild card
- 1:01:19'cause it keeps you guys hot and that's theirs.
- 1:01:22That's probably their mentality right now.
- 1:01:24It's like it's a lot of pressure on the offense.
- 1:01:27I hear you. Let's talk players weekend.
- 1:01:33Let's let's wrap this thing up. Is the Yankees game over yet?
- 1:01:37Can we officially tie a bow on this?
- 1:01:39No bottom. It's Clay Holmes.
- 1:01:40I told you 9. Of that oh, Yankees are up one.
- 1:01:44Nothing I see. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got you.
- 1:01:46All right. Well, by the time hopefully we
- 1:01:49get to the end of the segment, Players weekend will officially
- 1:01:52be over. Who knows?
- 1:01:55Any thoughts, any takeaways from from the weekend?
- 1:01:58And look, I'll just get it out of the way right, right off the
- 1:02:01top here because I know you. I know you want to say it.
- 1:02:08Or do you want to say it? I don't want to.
- 1:02:09I don't want to steal your Thunder here.
- 1:02:10Do you want to say it? Just a lot of school supply
- 1:02:13bats, that's all. It's everywhere you look.
- 1:02:17I could not. I could not flip on a game
- 1:02:20without seeing six to seven pencils or crayons in either
- 1:02:26lineup. Like.
- 1:02:32Bryson Scott breaks out the pencil.
- 1:02:34What was it a year last year and then all of a sudden that it
- 1:02:38was, but I I guess, I guess it eliminated any sort of
- 1:02:42creativity to be. There I yeah, I don't think it's
- 1:02:45the players selecting this. I think it's the players that
- 1:02:47don't have any idea of like something creative to do
- 1:02:51something with. And then Victus and Chandler and
- 1:02:54TL are all just like, here's a crayon.
- 1:02:56I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:02:59There's just a lot of those. But before getting into like the
- 1:03:04equipment, I think it was some cool stories.
- 1:03:08I saw Kyle Finnegan that he went to the closer for the nationals
- 1:03:15went to I think it was a Children's Hospital out there.
- 1:03:19And like those kids actually like just like drew in his
- 1:03:22cleats. He gave him blank white cleats
- 1:03:24and they painted on him and stuff.
- 1:03:26And he like went and spoke with the kids.
- 1:03:28Like I think that's what and there you go see double.
- 1:03:33I think that's what like this is about.
- 1:03:36Like, I want to see those videos.
- 1:03:38I want to see more of those because that's what this
- 1:03:42weekend, a lot of it is about who, by the way, I'm just going
- 1:03:47to go out there and say it. Kyle Finnegan looks like when
- 1:03:50Shrek turned into a human. You know exactly what I'm
- 1:03:54talking. About.
- 1:03:57You know exactly what what he turned Ogre into a human.
- 1:04:00By the way, a name I think we already mentioned should have
- 1:04:03been traded at the deadline. Not sure why he's still in the
- 1:04:05Nationals uniform. I don't know, he's like top five
- 1:04:09in the league in saves, I believe yeah.
- 1:04:14But anyway, him Freddie Freeman doing like the, I think he's
- 1:04:18talking about like his son and the stuff that he's going
- 1:04:20through right now and like the foundation that they're trying
- 1:04:22to get connected with for that syndrome that his son Max is
- 1:04:26dealing with. So there's like there's some
- 1:04:28good stuff. There's some good stories.
- 1:04:30That's what we're here for. That's what this is supposed to
- 1:04:34be about. I didn't get too much of like
- 1:04:37the The Who helped get you here stuff.
- 1:04:45Well, I told you I I saw that article.
- 1:04:50Who whoever came up with this title needs to be fired.
- 1:04:53I'm sorry, just such a weird title for an article.
- 1:04:57I was scrolling, scrolling just some headlines from players
- 1:05:00weekend and I don't remember if it was MLB.com or something, but
- 1:05:04the the article read something to the effect of Bobby Witt
- 1:05:09credits his four moms for helping him get to where he is
- 1:05:14or something or something. Like I said, something to that
- 1:05:16effect. I'm like, OK, clearly click
- 1:05:19bait. They want you to, they want you
- 1:05:20to read into what this means. Click.
- 1:05:23What did I do? I clicked it.
- 1:05:24And if you're listed to this, you're probably going to click
- 1:05:26it too. But I'll save you the click and
- 1:05:28just tell you what it was. I I clicked read through the
- 1:05:31article and I think one of the first sentences was Bobby.
- 1:05:37It's like a, it's a rephrasing of the title and it's like Bobby
- 1:05:40Witt credits his his mom and three older sisters for helping
- 1:05:44him achieve his dreams or something.
- 1:05:46And I'm like, what in the what in the ancestor we talking about
- 1:05:53here like? That's such a what in the Game
- 1:05:55of Thrones that we got going on here?
- 1:05:57I mean, I Bobby Witt. I nothing against Bobby Witt,
- 1:06:00nothing against his mom. His sisters love Bobby Witt,
- 1:06:04friend of the program, but the guy?
- 1:06:07Drop a drop a program. Program friend of the program,
- 1:06:10whoever whoever wrote that article, reconsider your life
- 1:06:15choices That that's such a weird like come up with your click
- 1:06:18bait elsewhere. That's that's just a weird
- 1:06:20headline. Super strange.
- 1:06:22Four moms, come on, it's. Probably a quote.
- 1:06:25He's like, yeah, I felt like I had four moms when I was a kid.
- 1:06:28I don't. It's probably something weird.
- 1:06:30Well, if that's the case, then my apologies, Bobby Witt.
- 1:06:32And your heart's in a good place and I, I appreciate.
- 1:06:34You so clearly you clicked on it, but you just didn't read.
- 1:06:37You just. Well, that's what we do these
- 1:06:40days. We just read.
- 1:06:41We read the headline article headlines.
- 1:06:44Now I need to now I need to feel like I I got to go back and read
- 1:06:47that to see if I'm it probably, it probably was him.
- 1:06:54Yeah, I just wish I saw more of the like, more of the other
- 1:06:58stuff. Oh, I'm trying not to sound so
- 1:07:03cynical, but like the the numbers on the sides of the
- 1:07:07hats. I don't know, I don't know, I
- 1:07:15would have liked to seen like, let's do the stories in the
- 1:07:22numbers. How about that like the numbers
- 1:07:24on your back be filled in with something.
- 1:07:27If it's one of your kids designs, if it's one of the
- 1:07:30children's hospitals, things like put that in your numbers.
- 1:07:33You know what I'm saying? Like have fun with numbers.
- 1:07:35I the the things on the hat. It was just like random and.
- 1:07:40Yeah, that looked like that looked like the designer NASCAR
- 1:07:43got drunk and decided to just create a combobulation of.
- 1:07:49By the way, apologies to Anthony Castro, Vince.
- 1:07:55It was it was a quote. It was definitely a quote.
- 1:07:57That's hey, that's on me, Bobby. That's that's my bad.
- 1:08:02Well, hey. That's on me.
- 1:08:04You. Gotta do what you gotta do.
- 1:08:05Hey, I'm getting his jersey here soon.
- 1:08:07Like within. After dubs what you're saying?
- 1:08:09So I'm I'm going to make it up to you, Bobby.
- 1:08:13I promise. I'm going to I'm going to snag
- 1:08:14that. That royal or that baby blue.
- 1:08:18Tie game, I'm told you. The New York Yankees have blown
- 1:08:27the one nothing lead in the 9th inning of the Little League
- 1:08:31Classic in Williamsport, PA. You'll love to see it.
- 1:08:34You'll love to see it. Yankee fans everywhere ready to
- 1:08:39throw their phone through the television screen.
- 1:08:46You'll love to see this. Is what I'm saying though.
- 1:08:48This is the maturation of the man you're looking at.
- 1:08:51The. Maturation does not matter.
- 1:08:53Maturation is not the right word.
- 1:08:55You've just, you've just given up on the Yankees as a whole.
- 1:08:58You it's a it's a lifeless fandom.
- 1:09:01I'm not going to, I'm not going to get too high or too low on on
- 1:09:06the regular season. Speaking of Little League
- 1:09:08Classic, as, as we've said the years prior that they've done
- 1:09:14this an awesome experience. And it got me thinking because
- 1:09:18I'm, I'm seeing all these videos of, I mean, I, I was watching
- 1:09:22it, but I, I, I saw these social clips of the guys walking to the
- 1:09:26stadium down that like Rd. that they kind of had marked out for
- 1:09:32him and the players are walking alongside him like dapping them
- 1:09:35up, getting autographs, taking selfies, all that stuff.
- 1:09:38It kind of got me thinking, I was like, OK, let's go back to
- 1:09:44where what did I, what did I search for that I was like, let
- 1:09:48me go back to 2006 because the year you and I were in the state
- 1:09:54championship and All Stars, we if we would have won that, we
- 1:09:58would have gone on to regionals. And then we would have, if we
- 1:10:01would have won that which we would have had to face Kyle
- 1:10:04Carter. And if if you know anything, if
- 1:10:06you remember anything from the early 2000s Little League days,
- 1:10:09you know that Kyle Carter was like the legend of legends.
- 1:10:12So we probably weren't going to make it out of the regional
- 1:10:14tournament. But I was like, I wanted to date
- 1:10:18ourselves a little bit here because I was like, OK, this was
- 1:10:202006. So I pulled up the top hitting
- 1:10:23stats of like the top hitters of the guys that possibly could
- 1:10:28have been if there was a Little League Classic back in 2006, who
- 1:10:33some possible names would have been walking down the concourse
- 1:10:38alongside of us had we made it to Williamsport.
- 1:10:42So some of the names just going it it pre sorted it by OPS.
- 1:10:47So across all of Major League Baseball in 2006, in order,
- 1:10:52starting from the top, we have Albert Pujols, Travis Hafner,
- 1:10:58Ryan Howard. By the way, Ryan Howard, I think
- 1:11:03LED all of baseball and home runs that year with 58.
- 1:11:05Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Lance Berkman, Jim Tomy,
- 1:11:10Jermaine Dye, Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Beltran, Matt Holiday,
- 1:11:16Jason Giambi, Garrett Adkins, Nick Johnson, Joe Bauer.
- 1:11:20Those are the top 15 by OPS. We would have had we would had
- 1:11:24some names stepping us up man, if that was the thing.
- 1:11:28That would have been sick, but like I said, not to not to 18
- 1:11:32years. Ago 18 years ago, dude. 18 years
- 1:11:36ago I'm. Going to take a nap just
- 1:11:38hearing. That Yep, 18 years ago no but
- 1:11:42bringing it back to Kurt day though it's it's just awesome
- 1:11:44and you and I were losing it laughing at these kids behind
- 1:11:48Soto as he's doing the shuffle like mid 80s they're.
- 1:11:51Losing it, it's just. Going nuts, man.
- 1:11:55And it's this was one of those things where it's like, whoever
- 1:11:59made the decision to incorporate this idea to, to craft the
- 1:12:03vision to make an event like this happen and not just
- 1:12:06happened once, but to make it happen year after year after
- 1:12:08year. Kudos you.
- 1:12:10This was an easy win. This was such an easy and and
- 1:12:15direct way, key emphasis on direct, an easy and direct way
- 1:12:22to reach the younger generation, the Little League generation who
- 1:12:27are living probably the best summer of their young lives
- 1:12:31right now. This is unforgettable stuff.
- 1:12:33Dude, I mean, you were, we were, we made it to the state
- 1:12:35championship. And I still think back to that
- 1:12:38summer being like one of the best of my life.
- 1:12:40These kids are the Little League World Series and they're hanging
- 1:12:42out around some of the bet. Well, as it stands right now,
- 1:12:46the two best hitters in baseball, yeah, just to name a
- 1:12:49couple, not not to mention the other names are floating around
- 1:12:52Williamsport right now. And we talked about how like
- 1:12:54they get to like roam around. Like you see these kids like
- 1:12:57roaming around because they're, there's just bleachers.
- 1:13:00There's no like seats. You don't have to worry about
- 1:13:02being rude in front of other fans or anything.
- 1:13:05So they like run down to the top of the dugout and they're
- 1:13:08getting their phones out and Snapchatting or whatever.
- 1:13:11And they're just getting to see like it's just this has got to
- 1:13:16be the coolest thing. Like the parents are sitting up
- 1:13:18the line in like a different section.
- 1:13:20You know, you just have like coaches and kids right behind
- 1:13:23home plate. Like the I think this probably
- 1:13:27has grown into like my favorite non Major League stadium event.
- 1:13:38Cool. Do your thing in Korea,
- 1:13:41Australia, England, Mexico, whatever.
- 1:13:47That's cool too, Turkey. But when we talk about like what
- 1:13:54it's supposed to do and like what this game is, that's it's
- 1:13:57this, this game, it's exactly what this is.
- 1:14:02And there's kids in there that are probably going to be on this
- 1:14:07field someday, you know what I mean?
- 1:14:09And it's a that's a great point. It's a kids game.
- 1:14:14You grow the game by investing in the kids because to your
- 1:14:18point, these are going to be the same kids.
- 1:14:20And and that we're not just throwing that out there like, Oh
- 1:14:23yeah, they may end up here. You see it all the time.
- 1:14:25You see the graphics of these kids, the Little League
- 1:14:28pictures, not just on on on this weekend when they have the game,
- 1:14:32but at any point during the year, you get a Sunday night
- 1:14:35baseball game and they they do like a flashback like oh, such
- 1:14:39and such was in the Little League World Series representing
- 1:14:41the New England era region back in 2012.
- 1:14:47I don't know that like that's what we're that's that's what
- 1:14:52we're dealing with. And if you if you continue to
- 1:14:54invest in that as a league, you're only you're only helping
- 1:14:59yourself. Like, yeah, you're doing
- 1:15:01incredible things for for the kids that are there.
- 1:15:04But just for the longevity of the game and for the the ceiling
- 1:15:10and potential that you can tap into as a game, as a sport,
- 1:15:15you're doing numbers for yourself by putting this on a
- 1:15:19national scale. Because, you know, not just the
- 1:15:23kids that are there tonight, the kids that are watching on TV
- 1:15:25going, I want to be that kid. And then they latch on to
- 1:15:31baseball at a young age. And now they're watching a
- 1:15:33random game in August on a, on a, well, random game in May next
- 1:15:39year on a Thursday night. And then they're going, I want
- 1:15:44to be that player. And then they get into their
- 1:15:47local Little League. And then that's the kid that
- 1:15:49ends up on your TV So, so many odd years later.
- 1:15:54That's how that works. This is an easy dub for Major
- 1:15:57League Baseball. I love that they have not thrown
- 1:15:59this to the wayside and that they're continuing to make it a
- 1:16:03yearly thing and to give these kids an opportunity of a
- 1:16:07lifetime. To take in, yeah, to take in a
- 1:16:09game this way. It's incredible.
- 1:16:13And the, and the, I love that there's like no old creepy men
- 1:16:20trying to get like shoving kids out of the way to get their ball
- 1:16:23signed. Like this is all of I bet.
- 1:16:26I bet 95% of those kids in the stands got some type of jazz was
- 1:16:31sitting in there. Jazz was just hanging out in the
- 1:16:33crowd in the middle of the game, just sitting there swapping
- 1:16:36bracelets with kids like these are it's got to be the coolest
- 1:16:41environment. I'm jealous.
- 1:16:43I wish I got to experience that as a kid.
- 1:16:45Well, I don't know if we can be so certain that no creepy old
- 1:16:47men are in there. I'm, I think I Zach Hample
- 1:16:51probably transformed himself into an actual chair.
- 1:16:57So he's probably just like sitting there like this trying
- 1:17:01to blend in. You didn't hear he got like
- 1:17:03trampled today at at Camden Yards and like started screaming
- 1:17:08at Oriole fans. I only know he was at.
- 1:17:10Camden today. Yeah, I only know this because
- 1:17:13I'm in the freaking Twitter timeline of Orioles fans, thanks
- 1:17:20to Ryan. So A.
- 1:17:21Steady stream. Yeah, he got trampled.
- 1:17:24He started like yelling at dudes half of after like an athlete
- 1:17:27home run or something. I don't know.
- 1:17:29Well, I'm glad he's not in Williamsport.
- 1:17:31Leave. He got kids alone.
- 1:17:32He got, like, bumped into the foul pole, I think.
- 1:17:39Oh, awesome. Yeah.
- 1:17:41Unbelievable. Guys anyway 50 isn't he like
- 1:17:43stop? Stay at Williamsport, leave
- 1:17:47those kids alone anyway. Just hanging out in the trees in
- 1:17:54the back. And anyone saying they go, why
- 1:17:57are you taking unnecessary shots, unnecessary shots at Zach
- 1:18:00Campbell? We've brushed shoulders with him
- 1:18:01on multiple occasions. So we, no, I don't want to talk
- 1:18:06about it. I'm not giving that guy anywhere
- 1:18:08your time. Two different cities too.
- 1:18:12Unbelievable. Anyway, that's all I really got.
- 1:18:18You got anything else before we get out of here?
- 1:18:20Oh, good app. That's a good, that's a good pod
- 1:18:22right there. That's a well done, well done,
