- 0:04Marvin Cash: Hey, folks, it's Marvin cash, the host of the articulate fly. We're
- 0:07back with another casting angles with Mac Brown. Mac, how are
- 0:09you?
- 0:11Marvin Cash: I'm doing great. How you doing, Marvin?
- 0:13Marvin Cash: Uh, I'm just trying to stay cool. It's kind of funny. You were belly aching about
- 0:16how hot it is where you are, and it's at least 15 degrees cooler than
- 0:19where I am.
- 0:21Marvin Cash: Well, it's still hot for here, for this
- 0:24early in, well, late June,
- 0:26you know, early summer. We've been. We've seen
- 0:29some hot temperatures already the last couple weeks, but,
- 0:32yeah, hopefully it's going to be a big cool down coming up
- 0:35next week.
- 0:36Marvin Cash: Yeah, and it's interesting, you know, last time we were coaching
- 0:39people that this was coming, you know, the DH was
- 0:42over. It's getting warmer. You know, you're going to end
- 0:44up, you know, having to fish either early or late or head high up into
- 0:47the mountains or go chase warm water species. And we thought
- 0:50one of the things would be helpful for folks is, you know, a lot
- 0:53of people, uh, uh, are reluctant to go
- 0:56fish, like farm ponds and lakes for, like, bremen
- 0:59bass, um, um, because they're trout anglers,
- 1:01predominantly. Um, um, but there are a lot of things
- 1:04you can do fishing for bass and brem that,
- 1:07you know, give you good skill translation for when it cools off and you
- 1:10get back on the water again in the fall.
- 1:14Marvin Cash: That's right. Yeah. There's a lot of line control
- 1:16tricks and, and strike detection tricks. You can
- 1:19learn, you know, on stillwater or,
- 1:22like, little t is pretty slow moving
- 1:25water. A lot of those big, big pools, it's like you're
- 1:28barely moving this time of year because it's not a lot of water in
- 1:31them. So, um, yeah, so if you're
- 1:33subsurface fishing, you can do a lot of
- 1:36things for strike detection. You know, play around with
- 1:38different rod tip actions and line retrieval
- 1:41speeds with your hand and just watching the line,
- 1:44keeping the rod tip low to the water and watching the line where it has
- 1:47that little curve coming off from the rod tip
- 1:50to where it meets the water, you know, and detecting strikes
- 1:53from far out. You can, you can see
- 1:56it instantly on, on that section of the line. So you can practice a
- 1:59lot of these things on the brim and bass,
- 2:02and it'll. It'll correlate, you know, directly to your trout
- 2:05fishing as well. So it just gives you better,
- 2:08um, attention, I guess, to the small
- 2:11details for your trout fishing. That's. That's one of the
- 2:13main. There's a lot of tricks, but that's one of the
- 2:16best things, I think, on this time of year to play
- 2:19with warm water fish for that reason.
- 2:22Marvin Cash: Yeah, it's interesting, right? Because it's exactly like just coming back to
- 2:25euro nymph. Right. And so you're looking at how deep your fly is
- 2:28based on the angle of your line to the water,
- 2:31right? Uh, uh. And then, and then to your
- 2:34point, right. You can, um. Um.
- 2:37You know, if you, if you're watching that angle, when that
- 2:40angle changes, it probably means you've got a fish.
- 2:42Right?
- 2:44Marvin Cash: Yeah, that's it. And then you go ahead and go straight into
- 2:47reacting to that, you know, with your strike.
- 2:50Go uh, ahead and moving the rod and putting it on.
- 2:53And you can, you know, you can strike
- 2:56deliberately like that in a
- 2:58short motion to test it. And if it's not there, then just keep
- 3:01fishing it. So I mean, it's really good
- 3:04for becoming disciplined and,
- 3:07um, how to strike. Like you learn that on warm
- 3:10water as easy as you do with trout. And,
- 3:13um, that would really be beneficial just
- 3:15because I would say
- 3:18over the course of 40 years of guiding that most people strike
- 3:21on an emotional response more
- 3:24so than a human computer or thought process. You
- 3:27follow me? So, so it's just all an emotion. By saying that, it's
- 3:30like think about chimpanzee. Uh,
- 3:32there's a good book, the chimp paradox that Steve Peters put
- 3:35out. And it talks all about
- 3:38like when people fish on emotions, it's like,
- 3:41I think I got a strike. So what do they do? They just basically make a
- 3:44back cast and the whole setups flying the other direction 40,
- 3:4750ft. And it's like, that's totally emotional
- 3:50because that's not the way we would ever set the
- 3:53hook. Does that make sense? And I would say the majority of people that
- 3:56don't go enough, that's how they set the hook. Um,
- 3:59so you learn that on warm water, like what we're talking about,
- 4:02to be deliberate, but short. I mean, you could do a line strike
- 4:05using your lined hand, move the rod just 810 inches to check
- 4:07and see if it's there. And if it's not, you're still fishing. You didn't, you didn't
- 4:10put it in the air and make a back cast or
- 4:13worse, say the fish was on, but you struck
- 4:16emotionally and now everything's broke off. So it's like,
- 4:18it's a great, great training methodology
- 4:22for becoming deliberate. Using the human computer part of
- 4:24your mind to set the hook
- 4:27rather than emotional. Set the hook, you know?
- 4:29Marvin Cash: Yeah. And then, you know, we've talked in various episodes
- 4:32about how, you know, there are times when you want to dead
- 4:35drift, but there are times when you want to
- 4:38animate the fly. Right. We talked about cattus. You know, we've talked
- 4:41about you fishing with Davey. Um, and so one of.
- 4:44Yeah. And so one of the great things you can do, right, a very common
- 4:47thing, right, in the evening is to fish some kind of popper,
- 4:49right? And, you know, particularly even if you're on a river, you
- 4:52know, fishing some kind of popper, probably with some rubber legs on it
- 4:55for smallmouth and understanding,
- 4:58you know, you know, how to animate
- 5:01that fly. Um, um, not just to make it move any
- 5:04which way, but just to start to understand, like, if I do this with the
- 5:07rod or if I do this with the line, what does that do to the
- 5:10fly? And that's going to make you a. A
- 5:13way better streamer angler and a way better dry fly
- 5:16angler when you get back on the trout stream.
- 5:19Marvin Cash: Oh, yeah, absolutely. And also playing around
- 5:22with the, uh, patience game, you know, with
- 5:25smallmouth, a lot of times on the popper is you
- 5:27can animate it, and then during the pause, when it's
- 5:30back at drift and animate it. And then during the pause,
- 5:33it's easy for people to want to rush that whole
- 5:36process, you know? And then, okay, I'm going to make another cast.
- 5:39But if we animate and pause, we can leave it out there
- 5:42for a very long time until it actually gets something.
- 5:45And usually you'll find that the better quality
- 5:47smallmouth around here are
- 5:50usually when it's sitting there for quite a while after
- 5:53it's been animated. And I mean, like, up to 90 seconds,
- 5:56most people are, I want to rush that back in 15 and
- 5:59let's launch another task. But I'm saying the best quality
- 6:02fish that I've seen over the years, like, even
- 6:05with, like, hoppers and cicadas and things,
- 6:07is, is the ones that stay there a very long time in a
- 6:10fishy spot, and all of a sudden the water boils,
- 6:13you know, sometimes as long as two minutes of
- 6:15waiting. But people don't tend
- 6:18to wait a lot when they're. When, when you're trying to
- 6:21get them to wait, they're. They're usually trying to rush that process. And I'm like,
- 6:24no, keep fishing it. Let it stay.
- 6:27But, yeah, the better quality fish usually,
- 6:30usually happen during that long pause game.
- 6:34Marvin Cash: Also teaches you, too, to kind of reinforce that, being
- 6:37deliberate about your presentation. Right. So, you know,
- 6:40some of it is pause with slight movement. You know, if
- 6:42that doesn't work. You can start short strips, you know, if you're
- 6:45fishing sliders or something that's got an open face,
- 6:49you know, do you pop it and leave it alone, or do you pop, pop,
- 6:51pop? And so it's the same things that we do fishing for
- 6:54trout, just in a slightly different situation.
- 6:57But if you, if you get in that mindset, like, you know, if you've been fishing
- 7:00it one way for an hour and you haven't caught anything,
- 7:03you might want to try something different, right?
- 7:06Marvin Cash: Oh, yeah, no, that's, that'd be good. And it's like, yeah,
- 7:09there's a lot of great, great lessons, um,
- 7:12from, from the rivers and ponds and lakes, you know, that you
- 7:15can transfer back over. And Matt, Matt did a good post the
- 7:18other day, but, um, I think it's, it's
- 7:21spot on, you know, with these kind of temperatures.
- 7:24He posted that up in Michigan. I guess Michigan's been really hot, too.
- 7:27And, um, but, you know, it's, it's,
- 7:30it's okay to give, give trout a break when it gets hot. You
- 7:33know, I see it here all the time. People still
- 7:35pressuring a lot of the private stuff in north Georgia,
- 7:38and it's just like, it's too warm.
- 7:41It really is. When you have two weeks of 80, 90 degree
- 7:44temperatures, chances are you'd be better off to go warm
- 7:47water and let the trout, let the trout alone for a
- 7:49while, you know, because the mortality rate's going to go way up the next few
- 7:52weeks for trout. I just think it's an ethical thing to leave them
- 7:55alone, you know? Yeah.
- 7:57Marvin Cash: And I think, too, you know, you know, it may sound kind of
- 8:00complicated to say we'll try all sorts of different things that people don't know
- 8:03where to start, but, I mean, I think it comes back to stuff you and I have talked about
- 8:06a lot, right. Is observation. Right. And so if you're
- 8:09on a farm pond or a lake or river, like, what food do you
- 8:11see? Right. If you're putting the boat in and you see
- 8:14lots of minnows, maybe you need to, you know, fish a ck
- 8:17bait fish or a woolly booger. Right. If you see dragonflies, like,
- 8:20I mean, it's just, you know, the water is going to tell you, you
- 8:23know, what's there to be eaten.
- 8:25Marvin Cash: Um.
- 8:25Marvin Cash: Um, you know, ah, you know, the, the fish don't
- 8:28have uber eats. Right?
- 8:30Marvin Cash: That's right. Well, I like the dragonfly idea because I
- 8:33fish a lot of dragonflies this time of year. Um, um,
- 8:36as far as the nips and I fish a lot of them, you know, as a
- 8:39dry with extended foam bodies. I mean, I really
- 8:42enjoy fishing a lot of the dragonflies and
- 8:45warm water fisheries. And actually, even
- 8:48for trout, I mean, there's times a year, you know, you do. Well, if
- 8:51we were somewhere where the water's cooler, it's getting tough
- 8:54to find cool water right now.
- 8:56And so, yeah, the dragonfly is a really fun,
- 8:59fun pattern. You know, you really can't go wrong with
- 9:02dragonfly anywhere in the southeast on one water fishery
- 9:05right now.
- 9:06Marvin Cash: Yeah, so I would just say, you know, folks kind of take all that and, you
- 9:09know, don't let the hot water keep you off the water. I mean, one of the
- 9:12benefits of the summertime is you can fish either really early or really
- 9:15late and you can go do other stuff, you know, if you're on a family
- 9:18vacation or whatever, you know, it's not going to be like you get
- 9:21to go out and fish all day long. Um, so just all sorts
- 9:23of stuff that, um, you know, Mack and I thought you guys might find
- 9:26helpful. And I know, Mack, you're done with your schools
- 9:29until the fall, but I guess, you know, you're guiding regularly and you've
- 9:32got, you've got some spots left in some of your casting schools in the fall.
- 9:35You want to let folks know kind of where they can find you. So if
- 9:38they want to go down the river with you, they can do that or get a casting
- 9:41lesson or fill one of those, uh, class slots for
- 9:43you.
- 9:45Marvin Cash: Yeah, that'd be good. It's a, uh, best way is at the
- 9:48URL. Mac brown fly fish. And then
- 9:50same name as far as on Instagram and Facebook.
- 9:53They can send a message on that, too. And that's
- 9:56probably the best, best way to reach me in the casting school, I
- 9:59think. September 17, I got two slots left in
- 10:02that still. So those will go probably the next
- 10:05couple weeks and then it'll be full. But, yeah,
- 10:08we're looking forward to that.
- 10:09Marvin Cash: Yeah, we've got all that stuff in the show notes. And, you know, folks, as I always
- 10:12say, you owe it to yourself to get out there and catch a few. Tight
- 10:15lines, everybody. Tight lines, Mac,
- 10:18tight lines.
- 10:19Marvin Cash: Marvin.
