- 0:46Well, I don't want to let you know. We have another video
- 0:50theater episode coming up. This one is the first episode of a nineteen fifty
- 0:56seven fifty eight syndicated TV series, Whole Decoy, and it was the first
- 1:03UH television show with a female television police show with a female lead. I
- 1:11think you'll enjoy it. I will say that it is definitely in the p
- 1:15PG range, so Parental Garden's strongly suggested. Oh it's it's pretty good nineteen
- 1:26fifty seven fifty eight show. Well, today's program is brought to you by
- 1:30the financial support of our listeners. Thanks so much for your support. Now
- 1:34it's time that we got into today's episode of Yours truly. Johnny Dowler,
- 1:38the Sulfur and Brimstone Mann. Well, y'all listening and don run as Johnny
- 1:47Dunning, Johnny, what are you all about? Hydro electric Tower Dance not
- 1:53a thing. Should I? The Travers Construction Company is building one at the
- 1:57day. Buddy, it's a couple hundred miles west of Venezuela. Don't you
- 2:00might like to run down there and take a look at it. Well,
- 2:02it's very thoughtful of you, but no thanks. There's a time penalty clause
- 2:07in their contract. Johnny, and we put up the completion bot and the
- 2:10dam isn't finished by a week from Friday. It starts costing US five thousand
- 2:14a day until it is. It's found worried. We got a radiogram from
- 2:17ASA Travers yesterday claiming that attempts are being made to prevent the completion of the
- 2:22dam on schedule. Last night, Travis got himself involved in a premature dynamite
- 2:27explosion. Did they kill him? Oh? That was accomplished by two thirty
- 2:30eight caliber sluts they found in him afterwards. I wonder if coffee is any
- 2:36cheaper in Venezuela. Expensive accounts submitted by a special investigator Johnny Dallars, who
- 3:04home office Eastern Indemnity Insurance Company in Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an
- 3:08accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the sulfur and brimstone matter expensive count adem
- 3:17one two hundred and seventy three dollars and fifty cents air fare and incidentals between
- 3:22Hartford and Caracas, Venezuela. I was met at the Mactea airport by the
- 3:27deceased travers partner, Janior Catulio Matacta, who wasted little time on the amenities.
- 3:32Ten minutes later we were aboard a twin engine Cessna with Nattarsta to controls
- 3:38flying west or the Sierra de Avari dam as to whom may appeal to your
- 3:44travels or why I continue not be supposed to? Said? The police would
- 3:50have more information for us when we all right? Why federal authorities on a
- 3:53homicide mant o me being fussibly finised by governmental phone next with the federal authorities
- 4:00or intellect? What's your opinion about as a traveler's reports that somebody trying to
- 4:06sabatize them, when it is true we have had some breaks out of equipment,
- 4:11some vital materials loss or stolen. I do not believe anyone is attempting
- 4:15to delay construction by physical means. What do you believe many police organizations in
- 4:23your dollar day evening? Yours in the United States, there will always be
- 4:27a small percentage of disconest men. You're talking about, Captain Borrow. When
- 4:31it does it such who diligence, police investigations calls it justice work, stuffices,
- 4:41vital delays which could carry us far beyond the contact deadline that at five
- 4:46thousand a day, I can turn out to be pretty rough. And either
- 4:49you were travelers trying to improve this will be a real un We will be
- 4:55of the Dam's shortest in your dollar and your investigation can begin. It would
- 5:00not would have to be white of me to attempt to give you any three
- 5:02conceived ideas. Maybe you should have thought of that before you tried so hard.
- 5:13Some twenty minutes later, I'm hard to put the plane down on a
- 5:15bare earth field in the midst of the jumble of giant steam shovels, earth
- 5:18movers and bogos, and overlooking at all was the great bulk of the seatra
- 5:24de of Ari Dam. I'm tired. I made some excuse about having to
- 5:30check on a turboine inflation, so I made my way alone to the shack,
- 5:33which was construction headquarters of the pocket. Oh I'm sorry, my fault,
- 5:46Yeah, yeah, my name is Saler. I'm an insurance investigator.
- 5:55I'm looking for Captain Barrow, insurance investigator. That's all we need out here.
- 5:59Now, who's paying you off? Boris and Matarsa? Maybe we better
- 6:02start over again. My name is Dollar, I'm an insurance investigator. Who
- 6:06are you, dyll Ansony? I'm strap off with this outfit, and let's
- 6:10get one thing straight right now. I'm here to field this. Damn it.
- 6:13It's gonna get still in spite of you or Boris or Matasta or anyone
- 6:16else. Very admirable. Now, where's Captain Barrows? As I heard he
- 6:19was going over to Trevor's house, and where's that. He's a kind of
- 6:23whet or customers. I'm ten miles north of here. Uh huh. We
- 6:26got some cheeps parked down on the other side of the hill. Tell one
- 6:30of the boys, I said, he could drive you out there. You're
- 6:31mighty accommodating. All of a sudden, we get you out of my hair
- 6:33for a while. Yeah, that's what I figured. Oh, by the
- 6:39way, who's the girl I bumped into on my way in. Tell me
- 6:42that's ut Aisa's daughter. It's widow bar You must have been discussing some pretty
- 6:46important business, and what makes you think so either one of you remember to
- 6:50wipe the lipstick off your chin. There were a few questions I wanted to
- 7:01put the matartha regarding Bill Ansony and ASA Travelers coming a young widow Filmina,
- 7:08but I didn't see him around. So I made my way to the mortar
- 7:11perule and got myself transportation and a guy to take me to ASA travers home.
- 7:17Indeed through the end of the signor North Americano. It's coming here,
- 7:21and this that matters Senior Traveler's day. Well, the word's gotten around three
- 7:26first as a federal where when one has lived in the Sienna Oha as long
- 7:30as he's better or did that way anything pain or different become a quickly known
- 7:35well and maybe feathers in a question I was something about why Senior Travelers was
- 7:40killed. I know only that when men make an evil things and you're it
- 7:45will bring evils. You're talking about the building of the damn seat, and
- 7:48you're why should that be an evil thing? It is not like for men
- 7:53to change the things become natural through the earth. And you're too part the
- 7:57throwing waters of a river backward upon them head think he's not a good scene,
- 8:01can y'all you talked like a plantation on her? Pedro, No,
- 8:05no, can you're My father was a poor farmer who worked hard that I
- 8:09might foot to the school of the workers here. What Petron knows if he's
- 8:13nothing but sing? What is being done here today? The evil that men
- 8:18creates with his pointing, as he has already done to single fibers, And
- 8:22there would be more it would deproy than your many many more. Now that's
- 8:28a happy thought. As a traver's house with a neat, white suckle bungalow
- 8:37half hidden by a mass of flowering brugunder, I left Pedro de la questo
- 8:41with his bloomy thoughts while I want us to see if anyone was around.
- 8:46It soon became evidence that somebody was. The shots came from a low barn
- 8:54like building at the rear of the property, and I wasted no time getting
- 8:58over there to see a Cedro's prophety already been fulfilled when I started senior.
- 9:05So we meet again. Yeah, pretty looked for startled. You're almost as
- 9:11though you had expected to find a body in here. Well, I hadn't
- 9:15expected to find a shooting Galery send you're a travelers. If I had it
- 9:18built for my amusement, I haven't even found fire. I'm fascinating every since
- 9:22I was a little girl, and there is little else with which for me
- 9:24amuse one sets up here in this wilderness. I had become quite profusion at
- 9:28it. You see not bad? What's the gun? Thirty eight caliber and
- 9:39a forty five frame? And you're thinking perhaps that it is the samey celibra
- 9:43bullet which caused the death of Asta I thought had occurred to me. Yeah,
- 9:48it's regrettable. One was disappointed, senior. Hap some bottles has already
- 9:52said begun? Oh I see where is the good captain? Oh? He
- 9:56nest perhaps twenty minutes ago we didn't pass them on the road. Are you
- 10:01always at the spacious of other person's statement? Sing a dollar? But way,
- 10:03I'm curious, and you find something to be serious about? Something new?
- 10:09Oh, a number of things. Oh well, I haven't told you
- 10:13who I am or why I'm here, but you seem to know. And
- 10:16you're still anthonline has called me on a telephone and to inform me. And
- 10:20you don't seem particularly grief taken over the death of your husband. I have
- 10:24a philosophy of life, Senor, it is always to look forward cover back.
- 10:30It was only the future when I possibly tend to never the past.
- 10:33Sometimes the past has a nasty habit of affecting one's future only if one has
- 10:39been let look, I'm a crime and you haven't. Would you believe me
- 10:45if I said no, Senor Dollar, and here I'm a taous, you
- 10:52must return with me to be down as well? Why what's up? It
- 10:56is just copit and more. Yeah, just ordered an immediate topic of all
- 11:00work on the damn your fishing your dollars. Althoughady, the work has come
- 11:18to a hold nothing. He's moving through, tim, so will the come
- 11:22quite? Mix's nothu? Wife, Captain Boris, you can stop some check
- 11:28with Bill Ansony. Let's talk with him. I tell you, seniors,
- 11:31Dollar, there is only one answer for the actual Capatain Borossi's looking for the
- 11:37sail. We'll talk to him. I'm about ready to ship. Well that's
- 11:41about time you got here, Dollar, and you can talk some sense into
- 11:45this bullheaded jackass who calls himself captain of police. I have listened to enough
- 11:50of this kind of tops in your anthony. I'm willing to talk sensibly in
- 11:52carmony with anyone, but violent words or actions will not asswage in the least.
- 11:58Well that makes sense, Captain. You do the same about the sudden
- 12:01clampdown order of your Quite simply, Senora, I had no alternative. It
- 12:05was necessary to hold work up under them in order to prevent possibly irreparable damage
- 12:09to the construct. What kind of nonsince that, top Tan? It is
- 12:13a statement of facts in your Metasta. I discovered this afternoon that sen your
- 12:16anthony was about to dynamite a passageways for the new river bad He wasn't employing
- 12:22an excessive amount of dynamite, but bring the huge side down upon the cut
- 12:26that has already been made your line in your teeth for us. I am
- 12:28no engineers in your anthony. But when a specifications scored for twenty five cases
- 12:33of dynamite, and I find fifty such cases are being employed, drastic action
- 12:37of some kind is certainly called for. How about that Anthony he got his
- 12:41rocker dollar. I usued the specifications for the job. Twenty five cases were
- 12:45called for, and only twenty five cases were taken out of the powderhouse.
- 12:48It seems to be a little difference of opinion, Captain Spots, we go
- 12:52down and take a look at those dynamite charges. If you wishing you,
- 12:54I can assure you you will be able to learn nothing that will alter my
- 12:58decision until I get to the charges. We set the black New River bit
- 13:05somebody come off, and now with our star John Lund, we bring you
- 13:28the second act of yours tool aid Johnny Dollar. Our subsequent investigation show that
- 13:46Bill Anthony's specifications for twenty five cases of dynamite had cleared to the powderhouse just
- 13:52that way, and the explosive experts there said that only an amount greatly in
- 13:56excessive that could have caused the damages had been done. And we discovered that
- 14:01the blast had been touched off by a crude homemade sparking contraption. We found
- 14:05an a brush on one of the nearby hills. It was dark by the
- 14:13time we got back to the construction shack. Patarsta was waiting for us with
- 14:18a report on the results of the investigating. He and the Lataney had done
- 14:22the original damage. He is not as great as we feel, Senior.
- 14:24This yeah, how's that fasted? Whin? It is truly explosion buried the
- 14:31new card. It's only for a relatively short distance. We can buy pass
- 14:35through a natural canyon on the other side of the hill. The work will
- 14:39be completed by Friday. You are forgetting something? Are you notching off your
- 14:43work? Copy orders? Capitan Borders? No, I am flying to karact
- 14:50As to night. There are higher resources there who can quite easily countermand your
- 14:54orders. I am certainly they would prevent you gram interest hearing any longer in
- 15:00the construction of this. But it's not. A senorist looks like he's calling
- 15:07your hand, Captain, see and if I've no doubt he will succeed in
- 15:13your There are those in characters who for a handful of silver who will sell
- 15:16practically anything, including their souls. You know, Matassa has the same idea
- 15:22about you. He's not the first, now will be the last. The
- 15:26police official is always suspected. There are but few who realize that there are
- 15:31other considerations besides those of money. How about naming me one, captain.
- 15:37Eight men have died so far in the construction of the dam Singer, all
- 15:41of them during the so called accidents which have occurred. What if I should
- 15:46tell you that my reason for holding construction until we get to the bottom of
- 15:50this consist solely of a desire to save more lives. Well, I'd say
- 15:56it sounds reasonable. On a construction project like the Sierra Deavari Dam, there's
- 16:17not much to do at night except eat and sleep. In the mess hall,
- 16:21I was served up a beautiful thing called kat Swayler. I was seriously
- 16:26considering presenting my accompliments to the chef when I was called at the phone in
- 16:29Bill Anthony's office. I guess I did not interrupt anything to importance in your
- 16:33daughter. But I'm about to leave this prevery wilderness. Rely much more pleasant
- 16:37surroundings to be found in Karaka. Getting tired of target practice. Oh,
- 16:41I'm tired of many things in your tired and board. So perhaps when you
- 16:45have finished with your business there you was scheduled of me at in Karaka,
- 16:48I would be at the Grandpa as here. That's not what you called me
- 16:51about everything for him? What's the rest of it? Well, after you
- 16:55lift, I happy to record what my dear husband Asa once said to me
- 16:57concerning to them and the exit would have been occurring there. What was it?
- 17:02He said? Strange how the works of the de will always carry the
- 17:06order of sulfur and brimstone with him? What else did he say? He
- 17:10talks are but in coryptly? Isn't it? It meant nothing to you?
- 17:15Should it? Would it help any if I were to tell you that very
- 17:18close to with a dynamatic explosion? Of course this afternoon there's an old abandonce
- 17:22dand for mine that might What do you know about an old sulfer mine somewhere
- 17:37around here, Petrol? I know that there is once in you, but
- 17:41he has not been worked. There has been no one needed for many years.
- 17:45It would be of no importance to anyone. So probably find out that
- 18:00is evil in here? Sen your not evil? What is your des in
- 18:06your hopes to discover here? I'm not sure? Pedro? Can you know?
- 18:14Up? I had to have? What's your guest? There's there's wooden
- 18:18boxes? How would I know? You've been working on a construction job,
- 18:23Pedro, take a cloth to look. M is the explosives in your the
- 18:33boxes of dynamite? Yeah, i'm Emprey, I'm well. I answered one
- 18:41question? What questions? You know? Early access dynamite came from that blew
- 18:47up half that mountain today? And take a look behind those stack takes snare.
- 18:59Yeah, looks like we got more answers than were barking for. When
- 19:07we got back to the camp, I rounded up Captain Border. He agreed
- 19:10with me heartily in all respects. I would tell you a little treat to
- 19:15the shelfer mine has supplied us with several lancers finding the dynamite the body of
- 19:19Senor Bill Anthony. Let's not forget the gun, Captain thirty eight caliber,
- 19:27the same caliber that killed in your travels. The initials on the butt are
- 19:32GM. And when you consider that the sulfur mine is owned by Senior at
- 19:36Tullio met Tars, huh yeah, yeah, how soon are you living for
- 19:40Crocus immediately? Perhaps you would like to return with me. That's the second
- 19:44best offer I've hadn't done a zuela the first Seniors, Well, I should
- 19:48find the answer to that at the Grand Palazio. An hour and a half
- 19:59later, I checked in the the Grand Pelacio Vallet service did a fairly good
- 20:03job of removing the clinging yellow sulfur dust from my clothes, while a hot
- 20:07shower did the same for my skin. But nothing could help the chemical reaction
- 20:11of the sulfur dust that atonish the silver coins in my pocket until they were
- 20:14almost black. When I asked for Senor Travers, I was told she would
- 20:18be. It's a hippodromo nacional expensive cond item two three dollars and fifty cents
- 20:30cabs there from the Grand Pelacio to Caracassus, sumptuous hippodroma or nacionale. Pleasing,
- 20:38Senor? Can you do surprised in a way? I wasn't staking to
- 20:45see you get a nice Do you always accept invitations of hiety while only under
- 20:48unusual circumstances do you find this one on your shot? Well, let's say
- 20:52the widow's lack of grief over her husband's passing with Radhamont. You're not being
- 20:57very unus. Neither was your explanation about that self of mine. It's leading
- 21:02Captain Boros the Gatulio Mattarsta just about now he's the one. Oh, it's
- 21:08too bad. Why you promised to take care of my expences during my favor
- 21:14in Karaka one? You better start looking for another philanthropist. I don't suppose.
- 21:21I don't think I could afford it. Unfortunate, Well, in that
- 21:25case, I would not consider asking you to pay for my drink I'm still
- 21:30not too happy about that self. For mine explanation, it's nothing more I
- 21:33can faith in yours, not even where you got that coin coin, the
- 21:37one you just threw on the bar, punished almost black. In case you
- 21:44didn't know, that's what sulfer does. The silver I see, well,
- 21:49it was given for me betterfore yesterday than you. It was a wish of
- 21:53a given that I purchased a candle with the brand for my husband who gave
- 21:57it you La quest. I didn't take long to find Captain Borrows or to
- 22:07make the return flights to the other day about it. Locating Pedro de la
- 22:11Cuesta was another matter. When we finally made it, dawn was already hitting
- 22:15the hills. Unfortunately, it looked like we were a little too late.
- 22:22And you're doing a yeah, I see him that box he head with him
- 22:26another. It is fucking making it. The dynamite must be buried in the
- 22:30hill beside him. Isn't the river on the other side it is. If
- 22:33he explodes that dynamite, the river will break into a new channel and its
- 22:37sweep down upunder them alder for us, there is no other way. Sing
- 22:41on it all your bullet can stop him now you can expire the charge at
- 22:45any time before we each you let me take a crack out. It's not
- 23:02good, Pedro. What you're doing is not good. It really the evil
- 23:07and y'all even be any good from being down. Maybe we didn't walk for
- 23:11a while, maybe but only for a while. No matter what you'll do
- 23:15here today, that damn will be built, Oh thank y'all, it could
- 23:18be taking it at hod at the time for heaven, the evil thing will
- 23:25be left alone from down and he don't work us, and they we to
- 23:29dome. Maria, you're Maria Pedro? Who is she? He has father?
- 23:34And ya my mind, she who came with me be lanned on what
- 23:40the years of call Maria who worked with me in the stile, who by
- 23:45our Susans, who gave him a heap for me, our family, for
- 23:48al I was glad like there beyond a kissing your where the evil one would
- 23:55be easy to walk out? Is that why you want to destroy the damn?
- 23:59Pedro? Because of Maria's grave belong and y'all in the good art to
- 24:03which you get so much of her past, and they wish to be fight
- 24:07our days, and y'all so do in the fifty walkers, so they can
- 24:14make money to watch away you anything. They never make anything by down.
- 24:19How could I alone that? San? Y'all? How is that why you
- 24:25kill? Sang your travelers. You will not listen on my nap, had
- 24:30said him. But they would not listen. An evil man sang you and
- 24:36sang your anthony, and he's for sassed me. Follow me today, sought
- 24:41for mine. I had no choice, and y'all, and you have given
- 24:45me on now put the backs down, said no, tan, y'all,
- 24:51it is unfortunate you might die with me. Put it down to lessen at
- 24:56somewhere we will meet again. You're all right? Yeah? Thanks? Bus?
- 25:14How come you missed him? Wait? Necessary that I missed? What
- 25:18if I'd hit the bush and it caused contact? Hey, most unhappy thoughts?
- 25:23So was the one I had? What was that you do? The
- 25:26same thing could have happened just now when it hits the ground. Expensive count
- 25:40Adom three forty one dollars and sixty ten hotel bill and incidentals and Caracas.
- 25:44Expensive count Adom four two hundred and sixty seven dollars air fare and incidentals from
- 25:48Caracas back to hyfand expense accounts total five hundred and eighty five dollars and sixty
- 25:52tens yours twenty Johnny dollars welcome back. Well, definitely it deranged character the
- 26:15time you usually only see or hear about in old time radio classic television shows.
- 26:25Donnie nearly got himself killed trying to save the perpetrator here, but it
- 26:30all worked out for the best, well for everyone other than him. Well,
- 26:37we don't have some listener comments and feedback. I'd mentioned my and I
- 26:45mentioned this on Facebook as well. My first feeling when I heard eight twelve
- 26:51The Case of the Sunhower Mystery mentioned that ith that my first thought is that
- 26:59it reminded me a bit of scoobay Do, though I thought better of it
- 27:03later Andrew size Andrew says, I wonder if Hannah, if Hannah, Bara
- 27:10and Barbara listen to old time radio. You know, I think that old
- 27:15time radio definitely had an influence on the writers and creators of some of the
- 27:22classic television programs out there, and you can see that for years afterward.
- 27:33And there are some and whether it's in Hannah Barbera cartoons, where of course
- 27:41Oggie Doggy sounds a lot like Jimmy Duranti or you can look at the superhero
- 27:48comic Fantastic Four, and writer Stan Lee borrowed the phrase of William Bendex,
- 27:56what a revolting development. I can even see it in some of the later
- 28:02programs. Steven Spielberg produced programs like The Animaniacs and Pinking the Brain, which
- 28:08had several homages to Golden Age entertainment, both a lot of motion picture but
- 28:17even some radio. One that stands out to me, you know, without
- 28:21a watch when I was a kid, was the character of Mindy and the
- 28:26Buttons and Mendy's cartoon, who continually asked why to me that seemed to be
- 28:32borrowed from Baby Snucks. Certainly, if you grew up during this period,
- 28:37you listen to radio, it influenced you and it kind of shaped you.
- 28:41And I think that in some ways that's why there are silver ages. And
- 28:49in addition to that, I should add some people who wrote for radio and
- 28:55performed on radio actually performed on pormed and for television. Jackson Yellis, who
- 29:02writes Let George Do It It, wrote a lot of the early Colombo shows,
- 29:06and DAWs Butler, who did the voice of Huckleberry Hound voiced a similar
- 29:15sounding character on the radio show That's Rich. I think over time the influences
- 29:22from the Golden Age have diminished, and if we're picking up much from the
- 29:26Golden Age, it's probably third and fourth hand stuff. Finally, we have
- 29:32this comment from David, who says, I'm a co worker who is in
- 29:34his seventies, and now we have something strangely in common. We both love
- 29:40Johnny Dowler. I love when the old time radio brings generations together. It's
- 29:45a great story. And of course we're only a few weeks away from the
