Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It is harder for young people to get a job
- 0:02Speaker 1: at the moment, basically because there are a fewer of them.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Data from stats n Z shows nearly thirty thousand jobs
- 0:07Speaker 1: have disappeared from the job market in the last year.
- 0:09Speaker 1: On average, people under thirty have a five point eight
- 0:13Speaker 1: percent fewer jobs available than they did last year. Zainab
- 0:17Speaker 1: Ali is the CEO Youth Inspired with me this morning, zaneb.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Good morning, Good morning, Ryan.
- 0:22Speaker 1: How are you very well? Thank you. Now your job
- 0:25Speaker 1: is to get young people into work, especially those from
- 0:28Speaker 1: poorer backgrounds. What are you seeing at the moment? Are
- 0:31Speaker 1: people a young people as prepared for work as they
- 0:34Speaker 1: have always been or is this a hard market for them?
- 0:40Speaker 2: We are definitely feeling those stats in real life. It
- 0:47Speaker 2: is definitely harder at the moment to secure a job
- 0:50Speaker 2: as a young person compared to two to three years ago.
- 0:57Speaker 2: We've had to completely change the we work at yath
- 1:01Speaker 2: Inspire to ensure we still have ample, uh you know,
- 1:09Speaker 2: opportunities for our young people. So our change in tactic
- 1:14Speaker 2: has really been a reflection of how much harder it
- 1:17Speaker 2: has gotten out there.
- 1:19Speaker 1: What have you changed saying it?
- 1:22Speaker 2: I think really we've we've shifted completely away from you know,
- 1:31Speaker 2: back we've been around for eleven years and Ryan, back
- 1:35Speaker 2: in the day, we could kind of go through these
- 1:38Speaker 2: amazing courses where we where we upskilled down anatahi and
- 1:43Speaker 2: you know, some of the really important soft skills that
- 1:46Speaker 2: employers tell us that they need, work with them on
- 1:50Speaker 2: a CV and a cover letter and kind of get
- 1:52Speaker 2: them into the job market very relatively easily. Compared to now,
- 1:59Speaker 2: we've had to completely you switch, and we now, i
- 2:02Speaker 2: would say, in the last six months, have one hundred
- 2:06Speaker 2: percent relied on job opportunities through our relationships, through with
- 2:12Speaker 2: our small to medium business partners and the goodwill of
- 2:16Speaker 2: our local community.
- 2:17Speaker 1: So yeah, why is that Is that because the old
- 2:22Speaker 1: way of throwing in a CV and a cover letter
- 2:24Speaker 1: to a random job is just not working anymore. There's
- 2:27Speaker 1: ter many applicants.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's pretty much You've nailed it. That's exactly
- 2:34Speaker 2: what we're finding. On top of that, what we're seeing
- 2:38Speaker 2: employers tell us is for entry level jobs is also
- 2:42Speaker 2: a mass kind of run of overseas applications that come through,
- 2:49Speaker 2: and so employers are almost you know, it's a form
- 2:54Speaker 2: of fatigue, right, and you know, they go through seventy
- 2:57Speaker 2: applications before they get to the first one that's possibly
- 3:02Speaker 2: a local application. And so you know, internet based, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 2: websites like seek and trade me allow for a lot
- 3:14Speaker 2: of you know, applications that are just not suitable, and
- 3:18Speaker 2: so that paired with the fact that we do have
- 3:23Speaker 2: higher unemployment rates. For instance, Ryan, I've got a job,
- 3:27Speaker 2: you know, currently advertised, and the applications I'm getting, arguably,
- 3:32Speaker 2: I would say these are really overqualified candidates, you know,
- 3:37Speaker 2: that are applying for a more administration like jobs. So yeah,
- 3:43Speaker 2: it's kind of two pronged, but essentially there's a lot
- 3:46Speaker 2: of people and not enough jobs, if that makes sense.
- 3:49Speaker 1: No, it makes perfect sense exactly what we're seeing in
- 3:51Speaker 1: the numbers and obviously reflected on what you're doing on
- 3:54Speaker 1: the grounds, iain't never appreciate your time This morning, Zain't Never,
- 3:56Speaker 1: Ali's youth Inspired. For more from earlier edition with Ryan Bridge,
