- 0:08On Friday, October 6, 1950, the Philadelphia Phillies faced the New York Yankees at Yankee
- 0:13Stadium for Game 3 of the 1950 World Series. The Yankees led the series two games to zero,
- 0:19having won two close games in Philadelphia by one run each. This included a tie-breaking
- 0:24solo home run by Joe DiMaggio in the top of the 10th inning of Game 2.
- 0:29In Game 3, the Phillies were set to send Ken Heinselman to the mound to face the Yankees,
- 0:33Eddie Lopat. This audio recording is from the Mutual Radio broadcast featuring announcers
- 0:38Mel Allen and Gene Kelly.
- 1:01Good afternoon baseball fans everywhere. This is Gene Kelly with Mel Allen and Al Hubbard,

- 1:12York Yankees get ready for their third game in this 1950 championship classic. Fans for

- 1:53For the third day running, the Yankees have won two one run classics, Rashi the victor
- 1:58of the concerti. Yesterday Reynolds winning over Robin Roberts, we have Chris Autumnweather.
- 2:04The sun came out strongest at about noon today, New York time. What it appears as though we're
- 2:09not going to have any trouble at all with the weather for the rest of the afternoon. It's
- 2:13a typical New York Yankee classic. Well, the Yankees of course have come through 17 times
- 2:18to appear in World Series classics. The build of two downs, how many teams in the past,
- 2:24two down to the defending world champions particularly, have come through to go on and win in Titanic
- 2:30Voucher. Only one. Across the river from Yankee Stadium at the famed Polo grounds, the New
- 2:37York Giants did it in 1921. That year it was a best five of nine World Series and such
- 2:45famous names as Art Neff, Wade Hoyt, Jeff Burns, Paul Mays, Phil Douglas and Bob Shockey along
- 2:53with the late Jack Shikas Quinn, participated in banner pitching classics. The builds know
- 2:58they're down and so today, Giver Eddie Sawyer, who was brought up in the richest of Yankee
- 3:03traditions as an organization man before having been selected as a pilot of the down trodden
- 3:08fills has gone to a veteran left hander, the great patch South Park Ken Heinselman, 35
- 3:15years of age, who's surprised one and all and possibly himself most of all in 1949 by
- 3:20having won 17 games. This season, 75% of the time, his team has not given him any runs
- 3:26to work on. As a matter of fact, his earned run average is less than four per game. He
- 3:31has won but three. He has lost nine and of all the games he has started, only four have
- 3:36been complete successes. He has gone the distance that is four times. His three wins came twice
- 3:41over Cincinnati once in relief the evening when young Bubba Church was slammed under
- 3:46the left eye on a line drive by Ted Krozowski of the Cincinnati Reds and then most recently
- 3:52in the final week of the season against the Boston Braves when he won out 12 to four. He
- 3:56is what ball players refer to in the profession as a dark draw. A fellow with a quick movement,
- 4:01tremendous speed, soft stuff, a sticky fastball and as a matter of fact, his left handed opponent
- 4:08today for the New York Yankees, New York born Ed Lopez, who started Major League career
- 4:12with the Chicago White Sox is the same type earlier. It is the general feeling among press
- 4:18and radio role and the baseball wise-eaters that if there is to be a hitting explosion,
- 4:23it should occur today. Heinselman was looked upon as a possible surprise starter when
- 4:27the season began or at least when the series began. Stingel has gone along playing sick
- 4:32form. He hasn't had to play anything else or you can't second guess the home run. The
- 4:38home run by the Immortal Jota Mongeau yesterday which defeated Roberts of the field by a score
- 4:42of two to one. So that he began with Ratchey, countered with Reynolds and now two for the
- 4:48good. He doesn't exactly have to gamble with a fellow who won 18 games and lost eight in
- 4:52the 1950s season, Ed Lopez. Tomorrow he is scheduled to start his wonderful rookie, Ed
- 4:58Ford who won nine and lost one during this fast season. Whereas today, when all those
- 5:04saw his choice, it's just as it was prior to the game. He didn't make the official
- 5:08announcement until one hour ago. It was to have been either the veteran Heinselman who
- 5:12had just as leave shoot Ducks in his hometown of Perug, Missouri as play ball although he
- 5:17loved both of them equally he tells me or Bob Miller the recruit up from Class B,
- 5:22Gerro Hoed. So it is the veteran left hander Heinselman against almost the equally experienced
- 5:28Ed Lopez. Now there you are for percentage six. The one team that has come from behind two
- 5:34down. So that now the Yankees are our charm favorites. If not to sweep the series in
- 5:39court straight then certainly possibly to keep the series in New York without a move back to
- 5:43Philadelphia. Fans the nationwide membership drive being conducted by the Crusade for Freedom
- 5:49ends the 16th of October not far off. This great campaign to help lift the iron curtain everywhere
- 5:56has as its goal the signature of every American. As you know the Crusade for Freedom was organized
- 6:02by private citizens under the leadership of General Lucius D. Clay of Berlin Airlift
- 6:07Bay and is endorsed by the White House and State Department. Membership in the Freedom Crusade
- 6:12involves signing the Declaration of Freedom and giving all possible support to Radio Free Europe
- 6:18which supplements the voice of America. Join the Freedom Crusade in your hometown or right to
- 6:24Crusade for Freedom Empire State Building New York. In the background perhaps you can hear
- 6:32if your ears are not close to your loud speakers the fact that 30 of the 50 Yankee and filled players
- 6:39eligible for the 1950 World Series are graduates of the American Legion Junior Baseball Program.
- 6:44Here today as the guest of the Major Leagues is Captain Bill Irwin Post number 3317 from
- 6:50Oakland California which has won the National American Legion Junior Baseball Championship
- 6:55for the past two years. A bit of irony there for coming to the Major League to take over as the
- 7:00skipper of the World Championship New York Yankees two seasons ago was Casey Stangles who had piloted
- 7:07a veteran Oakland team to a championship and the methods he used on the Pacific Coast League
- 7:12champions are those that he brought here to the Yankee Stadium in New York. Now the physical setup
- 7:17of this ballpark is entirely different than that we had at Shy Park. Down the right field line it is
- 7:23296 feet away for home run territory. Down the left field line 301 feet the barriers here are not
- 7:30high. In dead right and dead left you scale a small concrete and chicken wire fence of approximately
- 7:37four to five feet. In other words it doesn't matter at all of the height of the flight of the ball as it
- 7:42sallies out there a home run valve but as the park tapers off to the terrace left center dead
- 7:48center and right center the fence grows higher. In some sections it is as high as 10 in left center
- 7:54deep close to the 461 foot mark where the monuments of the late Babe Ruth, Luke Eric and the great
- 8:02manager, Milla Huggins of the New York Yankees stand. Then there is a wire fence that goes up
- 8:08about 25 feet very rarely have home runs been hit there. The Bambino did it a couple of times as
- 8:14did Luke Eric. Jimmy Fox of the championship athletics in the early 30s and late 20s did it as
- 8:19well. But most of the home runs are hit to dead right and dead left. There is more ample territory
- 8:25for the outfielders to cover. As a matter of fact the Yankees have predicted that the left
- 8:29fielder, Sissler, who has had no experience at all in this mammoth ballpark is going to have a bit
- 8:34of difficulty in fielding out there. For there is almost it seems always a cross wind blowing in from
- 8:40left and out from right. In just a moment as the players are assembled the fields and they're
- 8:48traveling pearl gray and red uniforms along the third baseline. The familiar Yankee spangles of
- 8:54white with blue stripes, the umpires of the place and I believe we're going to have again the 30
- 9:00seconds of silent prayer to give thankfulness of living in a straight country of ours to be
- 9:06followed by the national anthem. So we are going to pause approximately 30 seconds to join in the
- 9:12silent prayer.
- 9:42Thank you.
- 9:53Ladies and gentlemen, if you please join the guys and the amateurs all sing together.
- 10:02Oh, say can you see I've never been alive. What so proudly we hailed and high like a
- 10:19making through life then I
- 11:33The National Anthem is starring Lee Song and led by Sopano Lucy Monroe.
- 11:46Now for starting line-up in the third game, a pivotal contest.
- 11:49For the Phillies, Eddie Wakers, first base.
- 11:53Richie Ashburn, center field.
- 11:56Willie Jones will back third and play third.
- 11:58Soya is going through a semi-platoon today against the left-hand low pass.
- 12:02Ennis will back fourth and play right field.
- 12:04Del Ennis.
- 12:05Sixth sister will back fifth and play left field.
- 12:08Randall Hemner will back sixth and play shortstop.
- 12:11Andy Semonix, who is still favoring his bat ankle, will back seventh and catch.
- 12:15Rookie Mike Goliath will back eighth and play second base.
- 12:18Amitra Heinzelman, H-E-I-M-T-Z-E-L-M-A-N, his first world series appearance,
- 12:24his record for 1950, three wins, nine send backs.
- 12:27For the New York Yankees, leading off and playing shortstop, Phil Ruzutol.
- 12:31Batting second and playing second base, Jerry Coleman.
- 12:34Batting third and playing and catching, Yogi Berra.
- 12:37Batting fourth and playing center field, George DiMaggio.
- 12:41Batting fifth and playing left field, here is the platoon for Stengel.
- 12:44Hank Bauer.
- 12:45Batting sixth and playing first base, Johnny Mice.
- 12:48Batting seventh and playing third base, right-handed batting, Billy Johnson.
- 12:53Batting eighth and playing right field in his first world series appearance this season,
- 12:57Cliff Mates, and the pitcher is Lopat, 18 and eight.
- 13:01Now, ten seconds for station identification.
- 13:04This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 13:18The umpires are switched around, moving clockwise as the series progresses,
- 13:25and we will have Dusty Boggess calling balls and strikes,
- 13:28Charlie Berry at first base, Gakko Conlin at second base,
- 13:34and Bill McGowan at third, with the line umpires Al Barlich of the National League,
- 13:39and Bill McKinley of the American League.
- 13:42So, in a moment, the struggle is about to get underway.
- 13:44The crowd has almost done capacity, at least 60,000 west-sirks.
- 13:48The Yankees spot out onto the field, and led by them, well, Jota Maggio, his ninth world series.
- 13:55And there's only one thing that Jota has on our contrair here today, Mel Allen.
- 13:59He's got one more series than Mel.
- 14:01So, here's the gentleman that's going to give you the play-by-play word from upper New York City,
- 14:05the Bronx, the Bombers, Mel Allen and his eighth world series.
- 14:09Melvin?
- 14:11And as we get ready to move into the final four and a half innings of the third game of the world series,
- 14:16it's my pleasure and privilege to introduce my colleague, who today is celebrating two things,
- 14:22broadcasting a world series and his 32nd birthday.
- 14:26Mmm, you're a young man.
- 14:28Thanks, Pop.
- 14:29Kenny Heinzelman into the motion, drawing the batter, Billy Johnson,
- 14:32who struck out, swinging on a curve ball for the third out, back in the second innings.
- 14:36And it's low and away, ball one.
- 14:37Johnson betting right-handed.
- 14:38The pitch?
- 14:39This curve is in there for a full strike one.
- 14:42One ball, one strike.
- 14:44I'm the kind of fellow Allen that makes you feel like a grandpa, I know.
- 14:47I hear you, Mr. Kelly.
- 14:49One-on-one, pitching.
- 14:51Low outside, slow curve, ball two.
- 14:53Both left-handers today have very good hooks in there.
- 14:58Low pat seems a bit quicker than Heinzelman.
- 15:01But the veteran left-hander of the Phillies has done a fine job despite being behind now, one-on-nothing.
- 15:08Now the two-one pitch, swinging, a ground ball,
- 15:10broadsword though, quick stop by Willie Jones, up with it, over to first in time.
- 15:13Willie Jones came up with the best in field play of the day by going well to his all-left.
- 15:26And a ball that seemed basic bound, draw the hole between shot and third,
- 15:29and speared it with his both hands, hitting over to first in time to retire.
- 15:33Fairly fast run.
- 15:34One away.
- 15:35Here's Clipnate, left-handed batter.
- 15:36And the first curve is low, ball one.
- 15:38Ken Heinzelman working on the mat, on maids who pulls the ball tremendously when he meets it.
- 15:44So I'd write, he's played that way right now.
- 15:46One-on-one, two pumps by Heinzelman.
- 15:48He delivers outside and low, ball two, slow curve.
- 15:52Two ball, no strike on on Clipnate.
- 15:54He pops out high, very high, through first baseman, Wakers of the Phillies, and his first strip up.
- 15:59Over one.
- 16:00Two-on-nothing pitch.
- 16:01Strike one ball.
- 16:02He crossed him up with what we've been referring to as a sneaky fastball, throwing it tight near the fifth.
- 16:08Two-on-one.
- 16:09One gone, nobody on.
- 16:11Glass to the fifth.
- 16:12Gory Yankees won, but for Lee's nothing.
- 16:14No more than one run has separated these teams all the way in three games.
- 16:17A pitch, swinging, and a thing for a spike two.
- 16:22That was a kind of a speedy pitch with a wrinkle on it, breaking away from mates that time on the outside corner.
- 16:28Big strapping left-handed slinger.
- 16:30Two-on-two.
- 16:32On deck, the pitcher at low pass.
- 16:34A pitch, way outside and low, to run it full, free and full.
- 16:37Pinesman began by running the count very deep.
- 16:41He passed for Zidow and Berra, both of them in the first inning, and then walked fill again in the third.
- 16:47Now he's behind again.
- 16:49The string pitch.
- 16:50There's a ball, locked to the short left field.
- 16:52Tristler moving in, flexed down the glasses, moves under, reaches up and grabs it for the put-up.
- 16:57That's all the first makes.
- 16:58He's proud in left field.
- 16:59His arm, Tristler.
- 17:00He has not done a thing, as you know, with a stick, moving into the third game of the series.
- 17:05And of course, he was a hero of the Sunday Climax.
- 17:09Now the crowd again will cheer for Ed Lopez.
- 17:17Stocky, long left-handed, born in New York, and now lives in Arkansas.
- 17:21It's winged left-handed.
- 17:22He's over one.
- 17:23Let's call that on strikes in the third inning.
- 17:25Pinesman's curve is taken by Lopez outside, ball one.
- 17:29On ball, no strikes.
- 17:31Glenda South Park in the motion, delivers.
- 17:35A swing and there's a line drive to a right center field in there for a base hit.
- 17:39Moving all that through field of all is Richie Ashburn and low-pattern is on with a third Yankee hit.
- 17:44Coming with two outs in the last of the fifth inning.
- 17:47That was a well-tagged single.
- 17:49Over the head of the second base in Michael, he had to short right center.
- 17:52Now, Scuder-Rosuto.
- 17:55His lack of height has paid off for the Pepper Pot shortstop today.
- 17:59He has been walked twice and each time the count on him when he was passed was three and nothing.
- 18:05A single right center now.
- 18:07Low-pattern on his first base.
- 18:10Third Yankee hit.
- 18:11The pitch is too risotto, batting right-handed.
- 18:13It's high and wide.
- 18:14For the short shot stop, ball one.
- 18:19Pinesman has given up three walks and two to field.
- 18:22He pitches and field swings.
- 18:24Upper cuts of balls to the third row of seats upstairs.
- 18:29Yankee stadium, as you know, is triple deck.
- 18:31It's a beautiful ball park designed especially for the national pastime.
- 18:35One-on-one on Rosuto.
- 18:37New ball in play by Empire Boggots.
- 18:39Strolling balls and strikes.
- 18:40Pinesman stretches, delivers.
- 18:42There's a bump to the left of the plate and then Boggots calls it foul.
- 18:46Semineck is protesting that Rosuto ran into his own bunt at ball.
- 18:51And there's a three-way conference along with Empire Boggots,
- 18:55created by John from third, the pitcher Heinzelman and Gacius Semineck.
- 18:59It goes as foul strike two.
- 19:01Boggots saying that he immediately called it foul.
- 19:04Bouncing off the left of the plate and then moving toward the right.
- 19:08Draw the count on Phil.
- 19:10One and two.
- 19:11Score one to nothing.
- 19:12New York Yankees over the Phillies.
- 19:14Yankees home for the first time in the series now.
- 19:16Low-pattern with a warm-up jacket leading off first.
- 19:19Not too close to guard by Wake is the first-sacker.
- 19:22The stretch by Heinzelman the pitch.
- 19:24He swings.
- 19:25There's a looper to second.
- 19:26Goliath under, grabs, and loopholes out.
- 19:28He hit it off the handle and the crowd for a moment got themselves a thrill
- 19:31since Phil took a very healthy cut.
- 19:34But it was an off-the-handle looper right through the second baseman.
- 19:37High Goliath for the third out.
- 19:38Dolph in the Yankee half of the fifth inning.
- 19:41No runs, a single.
- 19:43The right center by pitcher Eddie Lopez.
- 19:45The Yankees third hit.
- 19:46No errors by the Phillies and Lopez left on.
- 19:49Five inning totals.
- 19:50New York, one run.
- 19:52Three hits.
- 19:53No errors.
- 19:54Three left.
- 19:55The Phillies, no runs.
- 19:57Four hits.
- 19:58One error.
- 19:59And a very costly one at that.
- 20:00Four men left on.
- 20:04I've noted here today that the crowd has been a bit more demonstrative.
- 20:08Of course it's sizable.
- 20:09There must be easily 60,000 backing the Yankee stadium fans.
- 20:14The Phillies of course are so hungry for 35 years for their first tenets since 1915.
- 20:21Naturally had a very partisan audience down in the city of Wethely Love.
- 20:25The Phillies are down for the third straight time.
- 20:28They have never held the lead in any of the games.
- 20:31And their first offensive offering here in the top of the sixth inning is going to be the
- 20:36tell-head Richie Ashburn who has played very well in the field and has done well enough
- 20:40with a stick except in this game.
- 20:42Low Pat's wide sweeping hooks.
- 20:44His roundhouse is down breaking differs.
- 20:47How court Ashburn paralyzed twice.
- 20:50Making him swing enemies for strike three on a curve in the first and he took a fast
- 20:54ball crossing him up in the third.
- 20:56Lover two is Richie.
- 20:57Has a choke grip on the bat, well up on the stick.
- 21:00Nothing left handed.
- 21:01Low Pat motion throws.
- 21:02A fast ball.
- 21:03One of the plates.
- 21:04Ball one.
- 21:05And he came down with a cross fire that time.
- 21:08He was on left.
- 21:10Ashburn to be followed by Puttenhead Jones and Del Initz.
- 21:13Infielder Johnson at third, very shallow.
- 21:15Low Pat throws.
- 21:16And he half swings and gets a foul.
- 21:18Zipped off the handle of his bat to the left of the plate and behind.
- 21:22Ball one, strike one.
- 21:26Top of the sixth.
- 21:27Time running out on the Phillies who have not found the answer to producing the cluster.
- 21:34Well that matter neither team has.
- 21:36No more than one run scored at any one time in any one inning.
- 21:42One more, one strike to Ashburn.
- 21:45The left hander delivers.
- 21:47He swings and cuts a high top foul out of play behind the plate.
- 21:51And just missing the screen to our left.
- 21:53Our position for calling this play by play.
- 21:56Angela's cavalcade of sports for none of myself and Al Halford is perfect.
- 21:59We are right smack jab behind the plate.
- 22:02Not too high, not too low.
- 22:04Just shallow enough so that none of the action out on the field escapes.
- 22:11One ball to Shikes.
- 22:12Low Pat ready throws.
- 22:14Ashburn swings as a high foul fly moving to the stands in short right field out of play.
- 22:20Some 15 or 16 rolls into the boxes.
- 22:23The left fielder has no foul territory at all to play to speak of.
- 22:27In other words most balls hit to the territory allowed would be handled either to the outracing shortstop or third baseman.
- 22:33Left and right are pretty flush for the gardeners out there.
- 22:37Again ready for one and two.
- 22:38The pitch foul, Low Pat.
- 22:39He swings and it's a he's stuck him out.
- 22:42Now there's an Adelaide.
- 22:44During the 1950 season Ashburn never struck out as many as three times in one game.
- 22:50And so he does it for the first time in 1950 in the third World Series contest.
- 22:56That's the third time Low Pat has napped him on strikes and at his fourth strikeout pick up.
- 23:01He got him on a curve and a dandy.
- 23:03One down.
- 23:07Willie Jones one for two.
- 23:09Single through the hole to the left field back in the third inning.
- 23:11Batting right handed.
- 23:12Takes inside on a cross up pass ball.
- 23:15Ball one.
- 23:17With a hit run on with Wakers at first base in the first inning.
- 23:21Jones dribbled out.
- 23:23Low Pat to my.
- 23:25And then Singles a left with Thugan in the third.
- 23:28Now went away.
- 23:29No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 23:31Strike one ball.
- 23:32That thing looked like a sailor.
- 23:33It seemed to rise up a bit.
- 23:35And then for plump into the middle of the catchy Yogi Baron.
- 23:38One on one.
- 23:42One ball, one strike.
- 23:43One gone, nobody on.
- 23:44Filled top of the sixth.
- 23:46Scory Yankees one for least nothing.
- 23:48Pitch a swing and a foul right to the Yankee dugout.
- 23:51Now during regular season play I suppose the Yankees bring out the white Terry child.
- 23:57This is kind of a grim affair for both teams.
- 24:00The money is on the line.
- 24:03The proficiency, four out of seven.
- 24:06The first to prove.
- 24:08And the Yankees of course two games up.
- 24:10Now one and two count on Jonesy.
- 24:12North Carolinian, Laurel Hill.
- 24:15Low Pat in the motion.
- 24:16Fires, Jones swings.
- 24:17A chopping, zipping, ground ball foul along the third base side of the dot.
- 24:21And a fan reaches over from one of the boxes.
- 24:25And while they had a little effort not having taken his physical training lately,
- 24:29I surmise he finally picked it up for souvenir.
- 24:32Low Pat uses this moment to out rub up the ball a little bit.
- 24:35Go to the rod.
- 24:36Marshall has owned physical forces.
- 24:38Well he is well ahead.
- 24:39He has one man down.
- 24:41And the count on a long ball hitter, Jones, one and two.
- 24:45Now ready.
- 24:47Let's see Low Pat getting the sign from Dara.
- 24:51Stocky catch here in the rocking chair.
- 24:54He throws, Jones cuts.
- 24:56There is a high twisting pop foul.
- 24:58It's going out of play.
- 24:59Mise gives it a try but to no avail.
- 25:01Zipping in.
- 25:02So the battle now between Jones, the hitter and Low Pat the pitcher.
- 25:07Dragged out a little bit.
- 25:09The tempo of the first game was comparatively slow for a one to nothing duel.
- 25:14It ran better than two hours.
- 25:16Yesterday's was better than three hours.
- 25:18But it ran into extra innings for the first time since 1946.
- 25:21This is about midway between.
- 25:25One ball, two strikes.
- 25:27Left hand to Low Pat delivers.
- 25:29Jones swings and misses.
- 25:30He struck him out.
- 25:32That appeared to be a curve ball thrown inside.
- 25:35So he turns the first two men to face him.
- 25:37In the top of the sixth.
- 25:39Now tells me that Low Pat has never been known particularly as a strikeout artist.
- 25:43And while he now has all told five getting ashburned three times.
- 25:49And Semonik once and with Jones now.
- 25:52He is really delivering that curve.
- 25:54This is a well-scattered series.
- 25:56It's evident.
- 25:57At the Fellows of Scattered both clubs.
- 25:59New weaknesses.
- 26:00The pitching comes to the fore.
- 26:02And now the most dangerous hitter potentially are the Phillies.
- 26:05Del Ennis.
- 26:06Is a high curve around the eyes of the cap all once.
- 26:09Del has bounced out to third for the third out on the first and popped out to risotto.
- 26:15On a handle hit curve for the third out in the third.
- 26:18He has yet to get his first World Series hit.
- 26:21Though he led the Phil's in hitting in 1950 with an average of 313.
- 26:26Want to know on it.
- 26:28Set for the pitch delivery.
- 26:30Strike one ball.
- 26:31Fastball.
- 26:34A good half of the diamond.
- 26:37That is the inner portion of it is covered now by the first base sand shadows.
- 26:41As well as the entire right field sector where mates the Yankee outfielder.
- 26:46The crowd drive now ready for any eventuality.
- 26:48And it's primarily hits to left and left center.
- 26:50They plan to pull to left.
- 26:51One on one.
- 26:52The pitch.
- 26:53A swing.
- 26:54A line drive toward right field.
- 26:55Maybe good for extra bases.
- 26:56Sipping in there.
- 26:57Rolling to the wall.
- 26:58Ennis rounds first.
- 26:59Head to second.
- 27:00Make place it off the wall.
- 27:01Goes to second.
- 27:02It's a stand up double.
- 27:03The first hit of the World Series for Del Ennis.
- 27:07And the Phillies now have a runner in scoring position with two and out.
- 27:12The Phillies you know leave the Yankees and extra bases.
- 27:16For the Phillies that is their fourth double.
- 27:20They have one triple no home run.
- 27:22Tamarjo's homer yesterday has been alone.
- 27:24Distance clout of this landing.
- 27:27A right field double hitting to the opposite field.
- 27:30Del Ennis.
- 27:32Sixth thisler.
- 27:34Over two.
- 27:35Running the finish.
- 27:36Swinging.
- 27:37There's a line drive.
- 27:38Left field.
- 27:39Basics.
- 27:40The first hit of the World Series for Del Ennis.
- 27:43The first hit of the World Series for Del Ennis.
- 27:47Here's the runner.
- 27:48He's going to score.
- 27:49And the game is tied one-one.
- 27:50Well, Dick Sisher who had been one of the hitting goats.
- 28:00I shouldn't say hitting.
- 28:01I should say hitting advisedly.
- 28:02Batting goat.
- 28:03Comes through when the Phillies need him most.
- 28:06And it's a brand new ball game boys and girls.
- 28:09One and one.
- 28:10It comes with two outs.
- 28:12Both Ennis answers for hits safely for the first time in a series and they make it stay off.
- 28:18This has all occurred with two men gone just as the Yankees scored with two outs.
- 28:22Back in the third inning.
- 28:24The batter is Granville Handler with first goal leading off first base.
- 28:27No-pant stretches.
- 28:28Delivers.
- 28:29And the swings in a turn.
- 28:30And a down-breaking curve ball.
- 28:32Like one.
- 28:33First loose ball.
- 28:34Barely he loaded the grass.
- 28:36A point-sized risotto and it may well have been that an average size fellow could have grabbed that.
- 28:41But Phil certainly gave it a try.
- 28:43It rolled into short left center field.
- 28:46Nothing in one count.
- 28:47To Handler.
- 28:48One for two.
- 28:49The pitch.
- 28:50A butt attempt is missed.
- 28:52A snap go to first.
- 28:54He's out.
- 28:55A great play by Elvie Berraff as Handler attempted to choke up the defense by laying down a
- 29:05bust.
- 29:06They put it on.
- 29:07Berraff snaps through to Johnny Mize who put the tag quickly and aptly on Sussler.
- 29:12The play went to catcher Berraff to the first base and Johnny Mize and the Phillies are
- 29:16retired.
- 29:17The count incidentally had gone nothing at all on Handler.
- 29:20One run earned.
- 29:21Two hits.
- 29:22The run driven in by Sussler.
- 29:24No errors by the Yankees and nobody left on.
- 29:27Berra and Mize took care of that.
- 29:29Five and a half in eighths.
- 29:30The Phillies won.
- 29:31The Yankees won.
- 29:32бес Gordon, if you look at what he did deer in a
- 29:44drill near the Griffith Valley 27'm allowed to repair the Jewel belly.
- 29:59It plays easily and rinses clean in a jiffy.
- 30:02To sum it up, the Gillette Super Speed Racer is the only razor that combines real shaving satisfaction with instant blade changing and double edge economy.
- 30:11What more, the Gillette Super Speed Racer is the greatest shaving value ever offered.
- 30:15You get it in a handsome styrene case with a 10 blade spencer.
- 30:19A big $75 value for only a dollar at any convenience store.
- 30:24Now to the last half of the sixth inning.
- 30:28Heinselman's set on the first pitch and about up there is Jerry Coleman who took call strike one.
- 30:34A down breaking curve ball.
- 30:36Coleman batting right handed is one for two and has wrapped home the one Yankee run.
- 30:39Ball one is wide of the plate on the slow pass curve.
- 30:44One on one.
- 30:46Well, the excitement at that time and you can see that the fans, no primarily Yankee routers or for the underdog at the moment
- 30:53as the bill's tied it up. Two pumps by the left hand.
- 30:55Heinselman delivers wide and high.
- 30:57Ball two.
- 30:59Two on one count.
- 31:01That's the first real excitement that the Red Caps visitors have given the fans here at Spatio Yankee Stadium.
- 31:09Two on one count.
- 31:11Coleman last of the sixth.
- 31:12The pitch, the swing, aligned drive.
- 31:13Let's field in there.
- 31:14Good probation.
- 31:15First the field too quickly.
- 31:16Coleman turns at first and the whip comes into the relay man, Granada, holding Jerry at first place.
- 31:22That is the fourth Yankee hit. All of them singles.
- 31:25And Coleman has two.
- 31:32Now, Yogi Berra.
- 31:34Walk once on a three-two count in the first and tapped out weekly to the left of the mound in the fourth inning.
- 31:40All four won officially.
- 31:43Looking for the box, he cuts on the first one and fouls it upstairs third time.
- 31:47And one of these World Series broadcasts are being carried to our armed forces around the world with the facilities of the Armed Forces Radio 7.
- 31:55And I am sure that the numbers of the 28th Keystone Division in Indiana are happy that person is here today.
- 32:01There's a quick draw over the first.
- 32:03But Coleman is back with room to spare safely.
- 32:06A man armed, Jerry Coleman, rightly second base under the Yankees.
- 32:10With a left field single.
- 32:12The pitch to Berra, the swing, aligned drive toward right foul.
- 32:16And that thing was tagged.
- 32:18And Berra put all of his chunky beat into that swing.
- 32:23The wind today is playing half with a long ball.
- 32:27And you'll know there have been a couple of Texas League singles.
- 32:31Pumped back planners as they call them.
- 32:33Nothing in two-count, Yogi.
- 32:35But, it's handed back.
- 32:37Infield looking for the double play now.
- 32:39The stack behind some many pitches.
- 32:41Wide and high of the play.
- 32:43Ball wide.
- 32:44One and two.
- 32:45Wide, one one.
- 32:46A Yankee run and a third.
- 32:47A field run and a sixth.
- 32:49Heinsman quick pitching now delivers again.
- 32:52A high sweeping show turn.
- 32:55Too high, ball two.
- 32:57Too two.
- 32:58One on, nobody else.
- 32:59For the New York Yankee, last of a sixth.
- 33:01And every now to get back that run.
- 33:03That's a field, garnet off.
- 33:05And he goes back.
- 33:08The stretch, he pitches.
- 33:10He swings and sends a high, off near the plate.
- 33:13And the back appears to have their own.
- 33:15For the right of the plate.
- 33:16Under, squeezing.
- 33:17He's out.
- 33:18Farrell pops out about 30 feet behind and for the right of the plate.
- 33:23So they catch them.
- 33:24One gone.
- 33:25And now, Joe DeMond, Joe.
- 33:27With one away and a teammate has first base.
- 33:31Joe has a single in two trips.
- 33:34And his single was of a variety.
- 33:36We were describing to you just a moment ago.
- 33:39There's a crosswind here at the stadium.
- 33:42Joe, the Yankee flipper sets in.
- 33:46He's going to go, Joe takes high around the chin.
- 33:49Ball one.
- 33:52Joe flies through short right.
- 33:54Two innings in the first inning.
- 33:56And then he got his single in the fourth.
- 33:58But with what's been it?
- 34:00He's going to go in the fourth.
- 34:03One ball, no strikes.
- 34:04Infield, he's now to the left side.
- 34:06Swinging, a long five ball, he's going to go in the fourth.
- 34:09And the stripper has it and takes it.
- 34:13The runner had first foreman picked off the back for the moment as the relay came in
- 34:17by a hundred of shots at the second base.
- 34:20DeMond, Joe flies, he's still at.
- 34:24Two gone.
- 34:27Tank power.
- 34:31Broad shoulder outfield.
- 34:34Playing left field today.
- 34:35He has played right in the first two games.
- 34:38He's going to go in the first, foreman back safely,
- 34:40and Wakers didn't even bother to put the tag on him.
- 34:44No count yet on Bauer who is over two.
- 34:47A round to the mound and a fly ball to right.
- 34:51Running right handed.
- 34:53Very off the dock stand.
- 34:56Infield stretches, delivers.
- 34:57Bauer takes wide and high.
- 34:59Ball one.
- 35:03I had the opportunity of seeing Bauer and Mates in the same outfield one time
- 35:07with the debugging leaders of the American Association.
- 35:10There's a high twister whooping itself up toward the third deck
- 35:14along the first state line and dipping down stairs.
- 35:19You see the second deck here at the stadium,
- 35:22got the back and the upper deck moves out.
- 35:25And I think three rows of people get themselves the thrill of a chance.
- 35:29And it's a good nature to cool crowd today because of the weather.
- 35:33One-on-one.
- 35:35Wakers, Hanks swings.
- 35:37There's another one this time, definitely upstairs and out of play.
- 35:41Strike two.
- 35:44Goal one-on-one.
- 35:46The Hanks in the pills and another thriller villain.
- 35:49One to nothing.
- 35:50The opening day, two to one.
- 35:52In Germany yesterday and one to one with two gone and a man on
- 35:56in the last of the six here today.
- 35:58Hanks takes time for pause, puts him over,
- 36:02in the six, the kick, he throws.
- 36:05High, very high.
- 36:07And Semina cut a climb up on the ladder that time to bring it down.
- 36:1012-2.
- 36:11Even up two and two.
- 36:13Four minutes first.
- 36:15Either better or no.
- 36:17I've been able to move Jerry along.
- 36:20Big fish, the runner breaks.
- 36:21He sends a very high spot behind second base.
- 36:24Well he has backtracking on the grass,
- 36:26five feet back, grabs it for the footer,
- 36:28and that's all for the empty foot in the last of the six.
- 36:31We'll move it to the second base in Michael Lea.
- 36:34For New York, no runs.
- 36:36A leadoff single by Collins, the Yankee four-tip.
- 36:39No errors by the pills and one man left on.
- 36:42At the end of six, the Yankee's one, the Phillies one.
- 36:46As we pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 36:50Here's the mutual broadcasting system.
- 37:07I got the Yankee stadium in New York.
- 37:09Field fans, or at least those who are pulling for the field stretch.
- 37:12And now, I don't know what it is.
- 37:15I know that most of these folks must be Yankee fans,
- 37:17but I think out of good sportsmanship of nature,
- 37:20they're stretching in both hands. What do you think?
- 37:22Well, they often do that here at the stadium.
- 37:24There are a great many of out-of-towners.
- 37:26And I think the many of them are just stretching
- 37:28because it's the seventh inning without regard to partisanship.
- 37:31So there are those among them, naturally,
- 37:33who are Phillies' rooters and are standing.
- 37:35Others decided that being a little cool
- 37:38might as well get up right now.
- 37:42How long my birthday cake's still hot tonight, Alan?
- 37:46Yeah, it was. All those candles on there.
- 37:49You want me to hire somebody?
- 37:51I'll blow on my hands while I'm blowing out the candles.
- 37:54Here's Danny Hammer.
- 37:56Charge dot, one for two.
- 37:58Single, off Johnson, the third baseman's glove.
- 38:01And the second and a five ball to right and the fourth.
- 38:03Pretty well hit, nice catch by Mates.
- 38:05Low pass pitching, Danny swings and ticks it off foul.
- 38:10There are traps of all and keeps it in play.
- 38:12He dropped it.
- 38:15Strike ball.
- 38:17Hammer to be followed by Catcher-Andy Semnick
- 38:19and second baseman Goliath.
- 38:22Nothing in one.
- 38:24Eddie throws, Hammer swings.
- 38:26Ground ball, through the middle, out of the center.
- 38:28Mates it.
- 38:30Hammer takes the turn at first and a march comes in
- 38:32and returns it to Rizzuto.
- 38:35That incidentally is the third consecutive hit
- 38:38of low pass.
- 38:40You see, Hammer's had double to right,
- 38:42with two down and a six and a fizzler
- 38:44to the left and now here is another single.
- 38:47Fengoff, who is the bench jockey or cup as they call him
- 38:51and is a formy Yankee of great renown.
- 38:54He's caught here for Miller Huggins.
- 38:56Talks things over with Semnick.
- 38:58And he has one for two.
- 39:00He's single through the hole,
- 39:02between the bag and the shortstop
- 39:04in the second and then struck out swinging
- 39:07on a low pass curve ball in the fourth.
- 39:10He's down with a through the middle, ground single at center
- 39:15and is called World Series hit.
- 39:18Infield moved in.
- 39:20Low pass stretchers delivers.
- 39:22There's a bump, throw them out.
- 39:24Low pass up with it, go to first, he's out.
- 39:26The sacrifice works.
- 39:28He turns at the left hand of Will in pivoting on a throw
- 39:31and looked for Rizzuto,
- 39:33but going in high on the slide was Hammer.
- 39:35So that Eddie had but one play and the sacrifice goes down
- 39:38to the pitcher, Low pass to the second baseman, Jerry Coleman covering.
- 39:47Run out at second.
- 39:49And the man upon whom it seems that every time we look up,
- 39:53Mel and I has runners on for him.
- 39:56But he's failed to produce quite consistently
- 39:58though he has played a very sparkling game of field.
- 40:00Mike Oliac, all for two, ground ball to the pitcher,
- 40:03ground ball to shortstop.
- 40:04And on second one away.
- 40:06Low pass pitch, it's going on and grounded.
- 40:08Third base side, fouled by three feet
- 40:11and Johnson backhanded it that time.
- 40:13And this large crowd, appreciative of every effort,
- 40:16fair or foul, gives Mr. Johnson a nice round of applause.
- 40:19One away.
- 40:26The single by Hammer was the seventh field hit.
- 40:32Score tied one-on-one, now with a seven.
- 40:35A man at second and one man out.
- 40:38Nothing in one, low pass set.
- 40:41Six throws.
- 40:43William Cling, wide-eyed for the field, in there for base hit.
- 40:46Here is Hammer, rounding third, heading for the plate.
- 40:48The throw comes in, he's safe.
- 40:50The first time in the World Series of 1950,
- 40:54the Phillies are leading in a ball game.
- 40:56In right field,
- 41:00Big 26 now is getting up to
- 41:02a three-point lead.
- 41:04And the first time in the World Series of 1950,
- 41:07the Phillies are leading in a ball game.
- 41:10In right field,
- 41:13Big 26 now is getting up to a three-point lead.
- 41:16In right field, Big 26 now is getting up to a warm-up out there.
- 41:21Might be a catcher, might be a pitcher, of course.
- 41:24Tom Perrick, who now lives in Philadelphia,
- 41:27while he was born in this city.
- 41:29And has been great in relief rolls for singles.
- 41:33The Phillies have only added first.
- 41:35The Marjo's roll just missed,
- 41:37Tubera has had him put across the planter safely,
- 41:40with a filled second run, and they now lead two-to-one.
- 41:45And in the manner, the infield looking for the but.
- 41:47Ten bats right-handed.
- 41:48Lopez pitches, ten bunts, fouls.
- 41:51Lopez made a token throw down at second base,
- 41:54and little Phil Rezoodo had a leap in the air.
- 41:57Like a championship herbal that time,
- 41:59as Goliath stormed in high-high.
- 42:01But it's foul strike one.
- 42:03Yogi was like a cat on that ball,
- 42:06and Goliath would have been an easy prey out there at second base.
- 42:11Foul strike one on the but, attempt.
- 42:14Short two-to-one now, double to seventh.
- 42:17And this game picks up a intro.
- 42:19The crowd, chilled by the weather,
- 42:22warms up to the situation.
- 42:24Johnson weigh-in on the grad.
- 42:26Lopez ready to deliver.
- 42:27I'll pitch out.
- 42:28I'll throw the first, he's back safely,
- 42:30and a good trap is made by Coleman
- 42:32to save the ball from rolling away.
- 42:34The foul was all in the dirt,
- 42:36and Jerry filled it with these and made sure
- 42:39that he's put on an old-fashioned tempera-martin body block.
- 42:43Oh, Jerry was on the alert.
- 42:45He played great ball this series.
- 42:49Goliath, of course, was safe.
- 42:52And on the pitch out, the count is one-on-one.
- 42:54They're gonna well afford to pitch out behind some industry.
- 42:56Very weak hitter, 0-2.
- 42:59And a cute throw to first by the left-hander.
- 43:02Bill White, who at one time was Yankee property
- 43:05and now heralds for the White Sox.
- 43:07It's supposed to have the cleverest of that motion.
- 43:09He's a left-hander.
- 43:11One-on-one. Here's the bunch to the right of the mound.
- 43:13Up-beauty, up-loaded.
- 43:14Low-patch bubbles it.
- 43:15Fix it up, nose him out.
- 43:18A faster-unner might have beaten that one out.
- 43:21But Low-patch knew he had only one play,
- 43:24and in his anxiety,
- 43:26bobbled it for a moment,
- 43:27but retired Heinslemen with room to spare.
- 43:30It's another sacrifice, and it is scored.
- 43:34The pitcher, Low-patch.
- 43:37To the second base in Coleman coverage.
- 43:39That's the second sacrifice in listening,
- 43:41and moves Goliath to the midway.
- 43:43Just as Handler was moved along by Seminix.
- 43:45Giving himself up.
- 43:50One-on-one.
- 43:51Seconds.
- 43:52The lead leads, 2-1.
- 43:53Two gone.
- 43:54Goliath, 15-foot lead off the bag.
- 43:56Waitgis, the latter.
- 43:57Eddie, 1-3.
- 43:59Batting, let's net it.
- 44:01Low-patch draws.
- 44:02Waitgis, puffs the foul.
- 44:04A real zipper off.
- 44:05There is.
- 44:06Mask and chest protectors.
- 44:08You know, when Cucklin became injured
- 44:10in the first game, he decided he was going back
- 44:12to the American League.
- 44:13Pat.
- 44:14It's airfield, you know.
- 44:16He feels he didn't get enough protection.
- 44:18Gokko, I'm firing right now to the right of the bag.
- 44:21It's second.
- 44:24Nothing in one counter-weight.
- 44:25It's Low-patch now taking a lot of his good old time.
- 44:27Trunky left-hand is stretching to check
- 44:29Goliath is second.
- 44:30Delivers.
- 44:31Swinging.
- 44:32A fly, off this pretty neat guard left field.
- 44:34Moving back and under his foul,
- 44:35and grabs it for the third half,
- 44:37he's got to retire the side.
- 44:38Waitgis flies to left.
- 44:39They are playing him shadow and bow.
- 44:40Had a charged back.
- 44:41That's the third up.
- 44:42In the seventh inning for the Fils,
- 44:44the lead runs.
- 44:45There are two hits with a pair of sacrifices
- 44:47going in.
- 44:48The run is caught by Handner driven in by Goliath.
- 44:50No Yankee errors, and one man Goliath left on.
- 44:53Six and a half in each score.
- 44:55The Fils two, the Yankees one.
- 45:01I said, Gordon, how the Boston Braes told you
- 45:03in his own words last inning,
- 45:05the Goliath super speed raisers can't be matched
- 45:07for shaving ease and satisfaction.
- 45:09Men, this razor gives you shaves worth talking about.
- 45:12Good looking, refreshing shaves that really rate.
- 45:15What more, it saves you time and bother,
- 45:18for it changes place instantly,
- 45:20swings instantly, and never jams or clogs.
- 45:23No wonder men everywhere say it's the most
- 45:26convenient razor they have ever used.
- 45:28Believe me, it's all of that and plenty more.
- 45:31Why not enjoy modern shaving comfort and convenience?
- 45:34Buy a Goliath super speed razor at your favorite store.
- 45:37Without exception, it's the greatest shaving value
- 45:40ever offered.
- 45:41The Goliath super speed razor comes with a 10-way
- 45:44Goliath dispenser and a handsome, serviceable
- 45:46styrene travel gate.
- 45:48All in all, you get a big $1.75 value for only a dollar.
- 45:57The big cat, the frail hitter, John Myers,
- 45:59who was rescued when it appeared that his
- 46:01national league career was over by the Yankees this season
- 46:04and has come through in tremendous style.
- 46:07Leaves off the face-line for men in the last of the seventh
- 46:10and the Yankee fans storm up for Horelli.
- 46:13Myers all for two, batting the tennis, swings and cuts
- 46:15a high puff bow upstairs over our heads and out of play.
- 46:20Perik has now sat down in the Yankee bullpen,
- 46:24which has almost completely blocked him off you.
- 46:26They have an alley in all, in right and left.
- 46:29Nothing in one to Myers, the pitch, taken inside
- 46:32near the hand, at high, ball one.
- 46:37John popped to second in the second and is bounced out
- 46:40for the first baseman in the fourth.
- 46:44Ball two has occurred, adjustment inside.
- 46:47It was around about, but too close.
- 46:49Two in line, nobody out and nobody on
- 46:52for the Yankees last of the seventh.
- 46:56The ball, two for the Fils, one for the Yankees.
- 46:59The wind up by Hanselman, he pitches,
- 47:01between a high fly to deep right field,
- 47:04moving back under and it's right in the wall and grabs it.
- 47:10That ball was hit just about as well as any
- 47:13toward the right field second and Del Henneth
- 47:16was precisely right at the base of the 344 foot marker
- 47:20in right field territory.
- 47:22As a matter of fact, the fans out there were all standing up,
- 47:25someone ready perhaps to grab a possible souvenir,
- 47:28a long fly out to right field.
- 47:31One away, and now Billy Johnson,
- 47:33Alphatube batting right handed.
- 47:35Strike one ball, slow curve on the inside corner.
- 47:38Billy, Alphatube, only a jersey boy,
- 47:42now makes his home in Augusta, Georgia.
- 47:45A ball's one strike, two pumps by Hanselman,
- 47:48he throws, outside and low.
- 47:51The rabbit's tired, John.
- 47:54Imagine there might be one of our listeners today,
- 47:56a leading citizen of Augusta, Georgia.
- 47:59Great baseball fan Bobby.
- 48:02One to one, one to two pitches,
- 48:06outside ball two to Johnson.
- 48:08Two and one, Russ Meyer,
- 48:13through ball pitching specialist,
- 48:15warming up for the field, as a safety measure.
- 48:18Two and one, swinging a foul,
- 48:21upstairs, third deck out of play.
- 48:24Two and two, score two to one.
- 48:28The pills have racked up eight hits against Alphat,
- 48:32and Hanselman has four to the angst to have that total.
- 48:35Four, Anki running the third,
- 48:38Phil runs him a sixth and seventh.
- 48:40Hanselman set now on the square count pitch.
- 48:42Delivers a zipping foul,
- 48:45right to the lower box,
- 48:47he's in the right of the crowd.
- 48:49This is safety, we fans, get out of the way.
- 48:52Here it comes back ball.
- 48:56Square count.
- 48:58Well, he's stuck out on the second,
- 49:00and bounced out the third, and the fifth.
- 49:03Feeds fairly close together.
- 49:05Waiting, swinging the fifth,
- 49:07fucking out, a stop, third ball.
- 49:13Well, there's no question that the psychology of the crowd
- 49:16is the only thing that's going to be the underdog.
- 49:19That is the club that has two games down,
- 49:22and for that kind of rooting,
- 49:24I guess that Yankee Stadium is as good a mecca
- 49:27as any place in the country.
- 49:29They are cheering Hanselman's great efforts,
- 49:31for he won only three games during the regular season,
- 49:33and completed book four.
- 49:35He faces big, swift, makes,
- 49:370-2, left-handed swingers.
- 49:39He pitches, and it's like one ball,
- 49:41that was a sneaky fast one,
- 49:43Steve Agars falling him behind the plate.
- 49:46Very ruddy complexion, chucky Texas.
- 49:48My size, cow-hubbers.
- 49:50Nothing in one.
- 49:52Swinging, a ground ball,
- 49:54hits softly the second, up with a goalie,
- 49:56and quicks the first, hands on.
- 49:58Dive, retired.
- 50:00No runs, no hits, no errors, none left.
- 50:04Argyllette's seven-ending total,
- 50:06we'd like this.
- 50:08For the Phillies, two runs,
- 50:10eight hits, one error,
- 50:12and the Phillies have five men left.
- 50:15For the Yankees, one run,
- 50:17four hits, no errors,
- 50:19and four Bronx Plumbers have been left on.
- 50:25I was talking with the aforementioned Tom Sperick,
- 50:28the broad-beam right-hander
- 50:31of the Yankees before the game today.
- 50:33Tom, as you know, is a Philadelphia.
- 50:35Matter of fact, he was asking us about the chances
- 50:37of a 10-football team this Saturday
- 50:39at First League, California,
- 50:41against Happy Waldo, flying California 11.
- 50:43But the benefit switched, of course, to baseball.
- 50:45He felt there's a difference between these two teams,
- 50:48thus far, was not exactly proficiency
- 50:51and ability, because the pitchers had the duke.
- 50:54It was, he said, experience.
- 50:56He said, let's face it, Kelly,
- 50:58these teams have been so well-scouted
- 51:00by Bill Skip and Johnny Nune of the Yankees,
- 51:02and George Earnshaw and Jack Sanford of the Phillies,
- 51:05that the experience here pays off.
- 51:07The movement of the feet around the box,
- 51:09the slight shift toward left or right,
- 51:11the knowledge that you have in a World Series performer.
- 51:14He says, this is my first deal with the Yankees,
- 51:16but that's my observation.
- 51:18And I imagine it's as clean-cut as any that you could look for.
- 51:21As the series now moves into the eighth inning
- 51:23of the third game of the Phillies' leading,
- 51:25Goudaouan and Ashburn is the batter.
- 51:27Richie cuts and gets a handled foul
- 51:31to the left side of the diamond
- 51:33and well into the stand, strike one.
- 51:35He has been struck out three times.
- 51:38Three times with charm.
- 51:40Mr. Lopez.
- 51:42Stuck yet, goes to the rosin.
- 51:44He knows now that he has found his fellow three times.
- 51:46He's got to watch him.
- 51:48Johnson's shadow with third base.
- 51:49To wind up, he pitches, he swings.
- 51:51A ground ball, passes to the right field,
- 51:53looks for the eighth inning.
- 51:55Ashburn takes the turn at first,
- 51:56makes up with the ball,
- 51:57whips a real line to the cutoff man,
- 51:59Jerry Coleman at second.
- 52:01Lead off single in the eighth inning.
- 52:03He's got to keep the ball in the corner.
- 52:05Jerry Coleman at second. Lead off single in the eighth inning.
- 52:08And again, the hurry call comes from
- 52:10pitching coach, Milkman Jim Gurnas,
- 52:13and manages single to the Yankee bullpen.
- 52:15Where I surmise again,
- 52:17Farrak will be called upon.
- 52:19Now there's another one out there again now.
- 52:25Now that's the bullpen catcher again.
- 52:29Tom Farrak, okay.
- 52:31And Mage Halk out there.
- 52:33Bullpen catcher.
- 52:35Ashburn on with a single.
- 52:37The field's ninth hit.
- 52:39The batter is Woody John.
- 52:41Infield looking for the buzz.
- 52:43Comes around.
- 52:45The buzz belong to first baseline foul.
- 52:47In the first game of the series,
- 52:49when Hopps supplanted Mies,
- 52:51defensively,
- 52:53they said it was a great move by Stingles.
- 52:55And that's gone again.
- 52:57You could see that Mies
- 52:59had a bit of difficulty bending to his own right.
- 53:01As it went through the hole between first and second
- 53:03for a ground singular right for Ashburn.
- 53:09A run around.
- 53:11Jones, one to three. Quick go to first.
- 53:13And the fleet Ashburn is back.
- 53:15In a running contest,
- 53:17I should imagine he'd run one, two, three.
- 53:19If both clubs were involved.
- 53:21Ashburn, nothing in one.
- 53:23Jones coming around again.
- 53:25Squaring away for the buzz.
- 53:27Mies up with it. One play.
- 53:29First base, Coleman covering in time.
- 53:31The third sacrifice in Kuwini.
- 53:33Moving Ashburn to second with one away.
- 53:35Flates scored. Mies to first-sacker.
- 53:37To Coleman, the second base been covering first.
- 53:47For the most part, we've had pretty straight-based
- 53:49ball here. The percentage, you see, the sacrifice.
- 53:51Bitch out by Daron. A fine tick-off play.
- 53:57Which wound up in the sixth, you remember.
- 53:59I guess this was so happy. He forgot he was on first base.
- 54:01Now here's Ennis with a run at second.
- 54:03And one down.
- 54:05Low pat, delivers. Close.
- 54:07Ball one.
- 54:09Low pat now.
- 54:11Ehrling a bit more consciously than he did early in the struggle.
- 54:13Well, this is still a fine ball game.
- 54:15So the fields have out hit the Yankees nine to four.
- 54:17They leave them two to one.
- 54:19So the defense has had to be on the alert.
- 54:21And the pitchers have had to bear down with one of those.
- 54:23Ashburn, fifteen foot lead off second.
- 54:25A stretch by Low Pat.
- 54:27He pitches Ennis who swings.
- 54:29It's a high fly ball to medium left field.
- 54:31Moving over for the ball, his power.
- 54:33Damage moves in. Says, I'll take it.
- 54:35And the center field makes the put-out.
- 54:37All the put-out was made in medium left center field.
- 54:39Ennis flies to Damageo.
- 54:41Two down.
- 54:43Now, sister, who had been the victim of cat balls,
- 54:45particularly those seated in left field,
- 54:47but now has
- 54:49what is the imaginative
- 54:51appetite of the fans with his
- 54:53single lead,
- 54:55that is home Ennis.
- 54:57For the first to run in the sixth inning.
- 54:59Stick one for three, they'll picked off
- 55:01by Berra, Gamay's,
- 55:03in the sixth. Bounced out the first
- 55:05and the fourth, and grounded out the Coleman
- 55:07in the second.
- 55:13Two gone.
- 55:15That's the end of that stretch.
- 55:17Sticking, he throws.
- 55:19Wide on the curve, ball one.
- 55:21Sister, I'll left handed batter.
- 55:23With a one ball game.
- 55:33I don't know.
- 55:35He pitches.
- 55:37Both, ball two, inside.
- 55:41Well, the field fans have been complaining
- 55:43about the ball being hit.
- 55:45They're certainly out hitting the Yankees today,
- 55:47but the big problem has been hitting in the clutch.
- 55:49With a runner on and scoring position.
- 55:55Two and 0, the sister.
- 55:57Left hand low pass.
- 55:59Stunning, delivering.
- 56:01Swinging, a foul.
- 56:03Right to Argyllette,
- 56:05and in and out.
- 56:07Just to our left, it hit a typewriter.
- 56:09I think
- 56:11the New York writers who covers the Brooklyn Dodgers
- 56:13during the season.
- 56:15Probably saying
- 56:17it shouldn't happen to Shot.
- 56:21Two and one.
- 56:23Outfield, pushed slightly towards the right,
- 56:25but they play him straight away
- 56:27in all sectors on sister. Two and pitch.
- 56:29Swinging, a foul.
- 56:31High towards second base.
- 56:33Coleman calling forward in front of Mice.
- 56:35Mice says I'll take it and he does.
- 56:37Big ready complexion. John ran right in front
- 56:39of the fans.
- 56:41He's going to carry that time
- 56:43to wind up the inning for the Phillies
- 56:45by grabbing sisters pop fly.
- 56:47First baseman in the eighth inning.
- 56:49The Phillies no runs. One hit.
- 56:51No Yankee errors and one man
- 56:53Ashburn left on a second.
- 56:55Seven and one half innings have gone by
- 56:57in the third game. The Phillies two.
- 56:59The Yankees one.

- 57:57have paid their way into the stadium today.
- 57:59A banner stadium crowd and now
- 58:01defensively, Shoya Muzin
- 58:03is pleased rookie up from
- 58:05Toronto. Notre Dame
- 58:07Jack Mayo.
- 58:09This is the second time
- 58:11he has taken over a similar post
- 58:13in the series.
- 58:15Jack Mayo
- 58:17he'll take over in left field.
- 58:19Of course he hasn't batted officially yet, but for the time being
- 58:21bottom number five.
- 58:25Woodling is going to be
- 58:27set up now in the last of the eight
- 58:29and hit her for Ed Lopez.
- 58:41Woodling, a left handed batter
- 58:43takes high, wall one.
- 58:45Gino
- 58:47of course has done it the first two games. He is
- 58:49three for eight on a series play hitting a 375.
- 58:51Heinzmann's curve is in there.
- 58:53LeCoultre strike one.
- 58:55Last of the eight.
- 58:57Woodling batting for the pitcher, Lopez.
- 58:59Left handed swinger.
- 59:01Heinzmann ready, delivers.
- 59:03He swings in a turn.
- 59:05Back two.
- 59:07Heinzmann you'll see is not one of these
- 59:09fellows that works up a perspiration very easily.
- 59:11And he has
- 59:13apparently kept on to a store of reserve in this game.
- 59:15He's a quick worker
- 59:17but paces himself.
- 59:19Doesn't throw too hard. One and two.
- 59:21The big pitch.
- 59:23Half swing but a take low ball two.
- 59:27Those umpires watch the break of the wrist.
- 59:29The inset.
- 59:31On those half swings.
- 59:33Two, two counts to Woodling.
- 59:35The pitch.
- 59:37He swings. There's a lazy tough fly
- 59:39going for a short stop.
- 59:41Under at Hamner the short stop.
- 59:43Waiting. Squeezes it for the first stop.
- 59:45Wonder.
- 59:47Well that means the Yankees
- 59:49will offer up probably
- 59:51Tom Thurick in the field path
- 59:53of the ninth inning. But they easily
- 59:55two to one.
- 1:00:01The Yankees, uh, now
- 1:00:03points out have to hit
- 1:00:05but five bounces to the infield.
- 1:00:07Field residual.
- 1:00:09On twice with walks.
- 1:00:11And the one Yankee runs scores and a pop fly
- 1:00:13to second. Swings
- 1:00:15and sends a zipper to third. A grasp gun.
- 1:00:17Jones spears. Josephers
- 1:00:19and a
- 1:00:21two up to now.
- 1:00:23Last three eighths.
- 1:00:25Third to first with the fly.
- 1:00:27First this is the big game for the Phillies.
- 1:00:29They drop this one and there's
- 1:00:31the far gone conclusion they're out of it.
- 1:00:33But a two one standing
- 1:00:35particularly since they come into the stadium
- 1:00:37by leading, if they should win
- 1:00:39changes the complexion
- 1:00:41of the series entirely.
- 1:00:43The batter is Jerry Coleman
- 1:00:45who is two for three.
- 1:00:47And a run driven in.
- 1:00:49Looks at the low curve outside
- 1:00:51right hander's swinger. Ball one.
- 1:00:53This slender second base.
- 1:00:55It appears whenever the chip
- 1:00:57so down performs greatly. He did
- 1:00:59so in his last world series
- 1:01:01in nineteen forty nine.
- 1:01:03One ball and no strikes.
- 1:01:05Pinesman throwing. Jerry takes.
- 1:01:07Inside. Ball two.
- 1:01:11Two and oh.
- 1:01:13Yankees is scored to try
- 1:01:15to throw his fellow off the mark.
- 1:01:17Especially since he gave up
- 1:01:19the run with two gone in the third.
- 1:01:21When Rasuda had watched,
- 1:01:22stole second and took third on the bad
- 1:01:24goal by Semitic and Coleman
- 1:01:26singled him home. Two and nothing fixed.
- 1:01:28Strike one ball.
- 1:01:30Cut the inside corner with a pretty bad
- 1:01:32hook.
- 1:01:33Blender number forty two. Jerry Coleman.
- 1:01:39Born in San Jose,
- 1:01:41California.
- 1:01:45Two and one. Two gone.
- 1:01:47The pitch.
- 1:01:49Low and outside.
- 1:01:51Ball three. Now the curve
- 1:01:53begins marmarite. They sense of course
- 1:01:55that Yankees did something similar
- 1:01:57before and there is a power driver
- 1:01:59coming up. Yogi Berra.
- 1:02:01Should Coleman stay alive.
- 1:02:03And on percentage Yogi would be
- 1:02:05due since he is hitler today.
- 1:02:07Now three and one.
- 1:02:09Got to make this one good.
- 1:02:11He pitches. Strike two ball.
- 1:02:17Pull count.
- 1:02:27Now Coleman steps out for moments.
- 1:02:29Talking on his cut.
- 1:02:31Bigs in. Getting a throw hold.
- 1:02:39Pull count.
- 1:02:48Now Coleman steps out for moments.
- 1:02:50Talking on his cut.
- 1:02:52Bigs in. Getting a throw hold.
- 1:02:54Thing runs out.
- 1:02:56He finds him and pitches.
- 1:02:58He swings and sends a foul just beyond
- 1:03:00the third base coach for steady of Yankees.
- 1:03:02Still three and two.
- 1:03:04Ball rolls out a short left field.
- 1:03:06And Hanner jogs over to throw it out.
- 1:03:12Two to one.
- 1:03:14Last Saturday evening.
- 1:03:16Third game of the 1950s ball clasping.
- 1:03:18Two men gone for New York.
- 1:03:20And Coleman three and two.
- 1:03:22New ball in play.
- 1:03:24Hinescom and sec. Pitches.
- 1:03:26Hinescom and the ball.
- 1:03:32In the bullpen.
- 1:03:34Funtzetti gets the sign to warm up for the Phillies.
- 1:03:38All the while Farrak has been heating up.
- 1:03:41I mean you've got to heat up today.
- 1:03:43In the light field Yankee bullpen.
- 1:03:45You have two premier relievers.
- 1:03:47The National and American League.
- 1:03:49Getting set for possible duty.
- 1:03:53The runner at first call represents
- 1:03:55the Central tying run.
- 1:03:57Dara is the batter.
- 1:03:59And Yogi looks at a high wide pitch for ball one.
- 1:04:05That was a four clock given up by Hinescom.
- 1:04:07He touches.
- 1:04:09The pitch is taken inside around the chin.
- 1:04:11Ball two.
- 1:04:17Two and O.
- 1:04:19And saying that his veteran left hander is in trouble.
- 1:04:21The Phillies catch a walk out of the mound.
- 1:04:25It's all things over.
- 1:04:27With lefty catch.
- 1:04:29Ten thousand bleachers.
- 1:04:31Standing or my mission.
- 1:04:33Go on sale tomorrow at 9 a.m.
- 1:04:35Eastern Standard Time.
- 1:04:37Here at New York Yankee Stadium.
- 1:04:39For those of you with an air shot.
- 1:04:41And travel shot.
- 1:04:43Radio baseball arena.
- 1:04:47Join out of error.
- 1:04:49He has one of the four passes.
- 1:04:51Bished out.
- 1:04:53By Hanklin.
- 1:04:55He grounded out weekly in the fourth to the pitcher.
- 1:04:57And then fouled out to summon a catch.
- 1:04:59All for two.
- 1:05:01And two and O.
- 1:05:03The pitch.
- 1:05:05Ball three.
- 1:05:09Three and O.
- 1:05:11Hanklin has lost the target.
- 1:05:15And ball four.
- 1:05:17And go to our show.
- 1:05:19Thumbs up.
- 1:05:21And that automatically brings Mr. Eddie Sawyer.
- 1:05:23To those pilots.
- 1:05:25Out of the third base dugout.
- 1:05:27That's from it here.
- 1:05:29And LingWant.
- 1:05:31We know.
- 1:05:33And now I think you'll bear me out.
- 1:05:35That Hanklin's confetti didn't get the sign to warm up.
- 1:05:37Until a few moments ago.
- 1:05:39He usually takes 20 pitches.
- 1:05:41At least.
- 1:05:43Varied deliveries.
- 1:05:45He's been himself heated up well enough to enter a ball game.
- 1:05:47Especially now.
- 1:05:49With the tying run at second base.
- 1:05:51The lead run at first base.
- 1:05:53Join out in the last of the eighth.
- 1:05:55And the filly is leading two to one.
- 1:05:57Did you see that he can stand to get up a short while ago?
- 1:05:59Just a moment ago.
- 1:06:01That's right, Shane.
- 1:06:03He's had.
- 1:06:05He's almost had time to get his 20 pitches in.
- 1:06:07But.
- 1:06:09Not too much time.
- 1:06:11We need to get really warm.
- 1:06:13Heinselman will often run the count full.
- 1:06:15As he did when he walked home.
- 1:06:17But.
- 1:06:19When he lost Sarah on free and all.
- 1:06:21Shoya became a bit concerned.
- 1:06:23They are leading Heinselman in the game.
- 1:06:25And he is facing the man who broke up yesterday's struggle.
- 1:06:27In the 10-10.
- 1:06:29Jota Macho.
- 1:06:31With one for three.
- 1:06:33This is a big moment for Yankee Ho.
- 1:06:35Climb his falls.
- 1:06:37And Heinselman shoals off the mound.
- 1:06:39Counting ball into glove all the way.
- 1:06:41Seminik jogs up.
- 1:06:43The module.
- 1:06:45Like Mannequin appearance.
- 1:06:47A great performer.
- 1:06:49In his 9th world series.
- 1:06:51Heinselman.
- 1:06:53And the stretcher.
- 1:06:55As long as the person is second.
- 1:06:57Delivers.
- 1:06:59Inside high.
- 1:07:01Jota Macho.
- 1:07:03Twisting his neck on that one.
- 1:07:05Ball one.
- 1:07:07He's fly to Anderson right on the first.
- 1:07:09To short left in the fourth.
- 1:07:11And fly to left in the sixth.
- 1:07:13Ball two.
- 1:07:15Is wide.
- 1:07:17Two and 0.
- 1:07:19Two and X. There's Hank Power.
- 1:07:21There are two men gone.
- 1:07:23There are at first base. Jerry Coleman.
- 1:07:25At second for Yankee.
- 1:07:27So these lead. Two to one.
- 1:07:29Last for the eighth.
- 1:07:31Two and nothing pitch.
- 1:07:33Wide and high. Ball three.
- 1:07:35If nothing else.
- 1:07:37This has allowed Constanti to get warmer.
- 1:07:39For he is now free and nothing to Demarjo.
- 1:07:41He pitches.
- 1:07:43Ball four.
- 1:07:45And now.
- 1:07:47I believe that they are going to call
- 1:07:49Jim Constanti into the ball game.
- 1:07:51Power is
- 1:07:53signal for the Yankee dugout by Stingles.
- 1:07:55As they'll talk over offensive strategy.
- 1:07:57The bases are loaded on free straight walks.
- 1:07:59To Coleman, Vera and Demarjo.
- 1:08:01With Sumina.
- 1:08:03And Constanti is being waved in.
- 1:08:05From a field bullpen.
- 1:08:07As he makes the long trip from left field.
- 1:08:09We pause ten seconds.
- 1:08:11For station identification.
- 1:08:13This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 1:08:27Back at Yankee stadium in New York.
- 1:08:29Jim Constanti is greeted with.
- 1:08:31Cheers.
- 1:08:33He's been playing in left.
- 1:08:35Which will probably pick up.
- 1:08:37As he walks in.
- 1:08:39Draw them out.
- 1:08:41He of course broke the all time record.
- 1:08:43For relief appearances.
- 1:08:45And game appearances by a Stingles pitcher.
- 1:08:47Going to the Knowles.
- 1:08:4974 different times during the 1950 season.
- 1:08:51He was a surprise starter.
- 1:08:53In the opening game of the world series.
- 1:08:55And virtually matched.
- 1:08:57Racky pitch for pitch.
- 1:08:59He lost one to nothing.
- 1:09:01In the eight innings he worked.
- 1:09:03Hanselman will now be retired.
- 1:09:05After having her old seven and two thirds innings.
- 1:09:07He has given up.
- 1:09:09One run earned.
- 1:09:11And four hits.
- 1:09:13But he has walked six men.
- 1:09:15And apparently.
- 1:09:17Undoubtedly as a matter of fact.
- 1:09:19Was firing.
- 1:09:21He just wasn't near the plate at all.
- 1:09:23And to Vera he was three and all.
- 1:09:25That means.
- 1:09:27That he threw four eight nine.
- 1:09:29And that was.
- 1:09:31Another.
- 1:09:33One.
- 1:09:35And.
- 1:09:37Another.
- 1:09:39One.
- 1:09:41One.
- 1:09:43One.
- 1:09:45One.
- 1:09:47One.
- 1:09:49I imagine even the.
- 1:09:51Most optimistic of my woman's personal supporters.
- 1:09:53Have been surprised that he worked this long.
- 1:09:55Concerning.
- 1:09:57said, give me a picture who hurls seven effective innings to tie them or head them by just one
- 1:10:06and then Constanney will do the rest. He is not necessarily a cold weather performer
- 1:10:11and was ineffective in the latter stage of the campaign but he certainly proved his worth
- 1:10:16and of course did not make Sly a look bad when he started out. Now the man who has a
- 1:10:23tremendous World Series batting average Bobby Brown who was 3-4-8 on this series and before
- 1:10:30hit was 9-4-15 for a total of 12-4-23. How's that for batting average? That's about 5-25
- 1:10:44batting average. In World Series play he of course got the skimming double of what Constanney
- 1:10:50said was his sleight of pitch and it was the one blow which set up the run that won the
- 1:10:55game for Vic Bracky and the fourth inning on the opening day of the class. So he is
- 1:11:03going to swing for Hank Bowen who though a long ball hitter single is playing percentage
- 1:11:08now. He sends the left handed slinger up there, Doc Brown. Two man outs, the base is loaded
- 1:11:15and the batting average is 5-4-23. The batting average is 6-3-4-23.
- 1:11:25Usually these are the situations that Constanney revels in. He steps off to grab the powder.
- 1:11:36This is the last of the eighth a real exciting frame. Free walk, paces loaded. One of nothing
- 1:11:43but a swing and a foul. Upstairs, run a play, strike one. We mentioned to Stryker and Stenney's
- 1:11:51palm ball to you on opening day. He holds the ball at the base of his forefinger and middle
- 1:11:55finger and releases the fingers on a pitch of the last instance. It breaks down and unlike
- 1:12:00many other palm balls which are used as change ups by Herla's it has spin to it and breaks
- 1:12:05away suddenly. He mixes it with a slider and screwball. He's ready for one one pitch.
- 1:12:10One swing, a foul. Behind the plate, strike two. This is a tense inning because the Yankee
- 1:12:20tower already has been up considering that Vera and Amarjo will get that long ball for
- 1:12:25you and that Coleman has played very great base ball in this series. Coleman at third,
- 1:12:32Vera at second, Amarjo first. The shot is one and two on Bobby Brown, setting for Hank
- 1:12:39Bowers against reliever Jim Consetti. The right hander Hicks throws. He swings and lost the
- 1:12:47foul, court left. Mayo reaches for the ball but can't make it. Defensively now you know
- 1:12:52Mayo has supplanted Schussler in left field. Ash Vernon center and his in right. The infield
- 1:12:58pass. Waitress Goliath Hamner and Jones and Consetti and Seminix decide to cross a little
- 1:13:06bit out there midway between mound and plate. Two to one. So these leads while the Yankees
- 1:13:18are in a threat. The base is ordered with two gone. Now Consetti in a motion. He swings
- 1:13:25and comes to ground ball to Hamner. How about it? He follows it. The win starts. There
- 1:13:38was a ball near the middle but Hamner charged up and had plenty of time for a fourth on Amarjo
- 1:13:45at second. But he lost the handle and a flying run scores. That of course is an unarmed run.
- 1:13:52That would have represented the third out. Coleman comes in. There is no RBI. Vera moves
- 1:14:00to third. Amarjo to second. Brown are first on Hamner's error. And time is called. I run
- 1:14:07out Jackie Jensen. We'll move into the game for Doc Brown. Jackie Jensen leads California
- 1:14:20football. Blanche who turned the baseball. Bonus rookie with the Yankees. Husky Blunt.
- 1:14:28Consetti set the pitch to Mies. Low ball one. It's Fran Huligan. Two and two last to
- 1:14:35the eighth. Now this is a game brought with drills. The errors however have played an important
- 1:14:42part. The fielding laps. One or nothing to Mies. Strike one ball. That's all to third.
- 1:14:49And the runner-up Vera is back. As a matter of fact after Hamner had wobbled the ball,
- 1:14:53Vera got back safely on that last play. The throw at her chance is a bit high. One on
- 1:15:00one to Mies. Pitch swings on the two. Strike two. That's the second field error in this
- 1:15:12game. The German accounting had committed one earlier. One on two counts. Consetti
- 1:15:22pitch, Mies swings and zips the fouls wide of the bag along the first base line by a
- 1:15:27foot. The line umpire. Bill McKinley out there throws it out of play. Red Clay serves as
- 1:15:35the protective warning to fielders as they run near the stands for chances on the outfield
- 1:15:40and the foul territory and the infield. Still one and two on Johnny Mies. Bases both over
- 1:15:46the Yankees. Two gone. Ready for the pitch. He draws. He swings as they high pop near the
- 1:15:52stands of third. John's going over. Near it and makes it. Well that was an exciting
- 1:16:00eighth inning. The Yankees score one run unearned. There were three walks given up to
- 1:16:05Heinsmann and the runners charged to him. The arrow was made by Hamner as Brown batted
- 1:16:10for power facing Consetti. There were no hits. There was one error and three Yankees
- 1:16:16were left on. Eight innings. Four ties. The Phillies two. The Yankees two. Men's modern
- 1:16:24Gillette one piece racers are the finest shaving instruments money can buy. They give you
- 1:16:30slick good looking shades. Comfortably and save you time as well. You see there's nothing
- 1:16:35to take apart or put together. You change blades instantly. What's more to clean you
- 1:16:42just loosen the holder rinse and shake. Buy a Gillette one piece razor. Any model you
- 1:16:48select includes a supply of Gillette blue blades and is attractively packaged in a
- 1:16:53permanent travel case. The base on balls has proven a big nemesis to the Phillies pitchers
- 1:16:59today. The Yankees scored on a walk to Rizzuto with two gone. A still one base by
- 1:17:03Phill and a bad throw by Seminick allowing him to move to third. Then Coleman drilled
- 1:17:08in home with a single to last. Virtually the same thing happened in the eight except
- 1:17:12that this time Hanselman lost the mark entirely. On the hook for this game will be
- 1:17:17the relief pitchers for the time being with big Tom Farah moving in. Now Joe Collins
- 1:17:26who has nurtured in the Yankee farm system is going to be the first baseman and Woodling
- 1:17:32who batted for a low pack is going to play left field. That means Woodling will bat
- 1:17:37night and it means that Collins will bat number five. Brown you see batted for a
- 1:17:48bar and Jensen ran for it. So Collins is moved into the number five slot right now
- 1:17:54and you're batting a ray. Stadies and Thurick's game now. Either to win or to lose.
- 1:18:01Both low pack and Hanselman are off the hook. Now as to which pitcher out pitched which
- 1:18:08in this ball game you might say that Hanselman was naturally more effective.
- 1:18:14The runs scored on the error but he did display vast ineffectiveness by passing the
- 1:18:19free man Coleman Berra and Imaggio. However officially at least game saying the fact
- 1:18:26the walk did cause trouble the error was the big move. Berra's record appearing in
- 1:18:3246 games both as a Brownie and a Cardinal 81 and he's picked he won nine and lost seven.
- 1:18:43Brownie and the Yankee of course. St. Louis Brown's New York Yankee. Game to the Yankee
- 1:18:48of the United States. Admit these. All the adopted Philadelphia faces. Right hander
- 1:18:56delivers. Handers playing. A long drive to left field. Imaggio going way back.
- 1:19:01There's Hanselman moving to second base but a great save by Imaggio. Holds him to two.
- 1:19:08A great save. A double by Handers.
- 1:19:12Third World Series double. And his third hit on the ball game. That was a tremendous drive
- 1:19:18at least 400 feet away from home plate and in shy park was a home run.
- 1:19:24Imaggio running. Caught the ball. Picked up the ball. With his bare hand while it was
- 1:19:32hopping and but for that and it would have had three. Climb is called.
- 1:19:38Dominic. Converting with. Sawyer. And Handler runs in from the bag at second to talk things
- 1:19:45over with his skipper and bench police and Benny Vengar.
- 1:19:51Now I believe that ball was hit as long as any in the series. Including Joe's Joe's yesterday.
- 1:20:00It dropped down there pretty close to the red play and Joe of course made a great play on it.
- 1:20:06Running away from the infield.
- 1:20:11So Handler picks up a powering double. Number three in the series. The infield mows
- 1:20:18these up closely. Dominic is about a one for two officially. A single is strike off and a sacrifice.
- 1:20:25Derek in the stretch. Delivering. High outside a pitch out. Ball one.
- 1:20:32Mera. Shipped it to his own right. In an effort perhaps to keep Handler alive at second base.
- 1:20:41Residual as close to the bag as a shortstop. Derek in the stretch checks it. Delivers.
- 1:20:47Off the bird. A scoop. Heavy runner runs the third base. Here's a butterfly in time.
- 1:21:02Now Johnson had a chance to grab that ball on a fly but preferred to scoop it up and possibly hold
- 1:21:10Handler at second base. Instead Handler with the sort of near the bag ran behind the third baseman Johnson
- 1:21:18and virtually walled into the hot corner and Seminick who could hardly run at all,
- 1:21:23limped down to first base. Johnson held out of the ball like it was a hot potato.
- 1:21:29It goes as a sacrifice. He pulls Handler to third base and the play is Johnson to the first base.
- 1:21:37Joe Collins. That was really a unique play and I'm sure we'll be talking about tonight.
- 1:21:46They're going to put Goliath on and Whitman is going to back four come steady.
- 1:21:54There's ball one wide and Derek throws wide again. Ball two. Well I've never seen one like that in quite a while.
- 1:22:01It appeared as though Johnson just didn't know what to do with the ball but that his first thought was to let the ball drop
- 1:22:07so that he could scoop it up and make sure that he could check the man at second and throw Seminick out at first.
- 1:22:22He grabbed the ball on the fly. He still would have held the man at second who was way off the bag.
- 1:22:27He backed at second. Wasn't covered at the time. Confused Bill.
- 1:22:31Because you see on the putt the second base was moving over to first to cover and Rosuto was near the bag.
- 1:22:38So Goliath has now been passed intentionally. Handler is at third. There was one man out and Whitman will back for come steady.
- 1:22:46So Zoya must give up come steady to a finch hitter.
- 1:22:50Whitman has been walked once in the World Series in his previous loan appearance. He bats left handed.
- 1:22:55The infield is all the way in. Tom Perrick in the stretch delivers high and wide ball one.
- 1:23:07This is the top of the ninth. The score is tied to a two without a lot of excitement here.
- 1:23:13Will you fans on Gillette's cattle get a court broadcast. One or nothing pitch.
- 1:23:18Wide but on the corner. On the corner. He threw him outside and caught the corner. Strike one. One ball one strike.
- 1:23:38One gone. Runner's on at first and third. The stretch by Perrick. He pitches. Six swings.
- 1:23:43The fly. Lost it foul on a play. First base side and downstairs.
- 1:23:49Strike two. Whitman is from Oregon. First base as you reckon those folks out in Eugene, Oregon are happy about the way the field plays.
- 1:24:01He was born in Whitman and will celebrate his 30th birthday the ninth of next month. 511 170.
- 1:24:09The square showed a shot with sharp features and he is now making the bid in his second World Series.
- 1:24:16He played you see for Brooklyn last season. There's the fellow that's really been playing in good fortune.
- 1:24:24One and two counts. Whitman the finch hitter for Constati.
- 1:24:30Perrick hides the ball behind his right knee. Gets the sign. Moves into the stretch.
- 1:24:34Delivers. Whitman swings. A ground foul. First base side. Just to the right of the Yankee dugout. Still one and two.
- 1:24:47Howl of a ninth. There's a hard stopper at this ball game. Two and two tie. One gone. Two on. Goldy at his first. Tanner at third.
- 1:25:01He's still close. Perrick has the peculiar sign of hiding the ball behind his right knee.
- 1:25:08Ready on one and two pitch. Slow stretch. Delivers. The swing. A slow ground ball. First.
- 1:25:13Collins doubled it. Go to the plate. He is out. The other choice play and a fine one by first-saccer Joe Collins. The reserves today and the bench of Stingel is again asserting itself.
- 1:25:33If not offensively then certainly defensively. And here comes Casey again out of the New York dugout. Wait kisses the batter.
- 1:25:40There are two gone. The play went to first base then Joe Collins to the catcher Yogi Berra who planted his compact buddy to guard the plate to onrushing runner Granny Hamner.
- 1:25:50That's two down. Goldy out moving to second. And Hamner retired at the play. That's what we call a three-two play if you're keeping score on a radio scorecard today.
- 1:26:06While that building the stoppers out on the strategy today. The veteran campaigner Stingel who was once a fill. And now we have another move by Zoya, a runner for Goliath.
- 1:26:17Goliath is what might be termed medium fast with his feet. And Ralph Cavalero, the audience lad, is making his second pinch running appearance of the World Series.
- 1:26:28Running for Goliath. Oh that means of the game. Well of course the game will move into the last of the night.
- 1:26:37Ludworth would be the second baseman for the Phillies. C-A-B-A-L-L-E-R-O. Now Wacus is the batter. One for four.
- 1:26:48Swing's left handed. Runner's leading off first and second. Big turn and a motion delivers. Strike one goal. His inner defense came to his rescue that time.
- 1:26:58And it forced the Phillies to give up their eighth-grade eaver. And Stingel you see. So that Stingel's move for the time being looks sharp.
- 1:27:08Well the second guess is tonight. Nothing in one of Wacus. The pitch. He swings. Since a high slide, a short right. Holding in on the ball.
- 1:27:20And with Nate falling for it, he has it. Bies retired and a big field threat is snuffed out on climberly pitching by Tom Berick and an alert Yankee defense which for the moment commited an error of omission when Billy Johnson the third baseman forgot for the moment as to where to throw the ball.
- 1:27:44So the side is retired and the top of the night. Noron. One hit, a double by Hanner which is erased at the plate. A walk thrown in intentionally. No errors by the Yankees.
- 1:27:56And two fills left on. At the end of eight and a half. Moving to the nub end now. A two-two tie. And let's see what manager Eddie Sawyer has to offer up in a way of a release early.
- 1:28:09He has not as yet made his appearance. Now moving out, Russ Meyer. This is his second relief appearance. He gave up. One hit in the first game when he in turn relieved Konstadie as a scotter.
- 1:28:26It was a topper down the third baseline on which Johns couldn't handle and then retired the side without any further trouble after that.
- 1:28:34So he has heard one inning of series play. His national league seasonal record with the Phillies, nine and eleven. So Sawyer is going with Meyer who has some of the finest breaking stuff in the national league because a whip-crack curve and a screwball.
- 1:28:52Well, well, are we going to have a marathon again today? Hard to say, Gene, but I know as far as the fans are concerned, maybe they don't care. Maybe they would like to have some extra innings because they love their big wall.
- 1:29:08Well, a big break in the game, of course. I've been a bop of the short stuff. And the Phil certainly had a grand opportunity. And the double tonight on Havana's double, I want you to consider the fact that Johnson did not catch Seminix's hard hit Bunk Pop on the fly.
- 1:29:25You, again, see the Yankee traditional courage being shored up. Also, DeLondro's play and saving the double that could have easily been a trouble against any other centerfielder.
- 1:29:40Jimmy Bloodworth, who's in as a second baseman, he's a veteran campaigner of both leagues. He played for both Detroit and Washington, while the Pittsburgh Clarets, for the Cincinnati Reds, and were secured in a deal on the 11th of May from the Reds by the Phillies as the utility infielder has done a grand job.
- 1:29:58Now, Russ Meyer, in the last of the ninth, he faces Billy Johnson, a third baseman. The curve is low and wide, ball wide. Johnson will be followed by Cliff Mates, and in the pitcher Tom Fering. Last of the ninth, high score 2-2.
- 1:30:17The pitch, strike one ball, overhand curve ball. Meyer very rarely throws a straight ball except on a waist pitch or a bait. He'll throw the hook and the screw ball. One-on-one.
- 1:30:32Blanky right-hander delivers. Wide, ball two. Two-on-one. Johnson is all for three. He's struck out twice to Heinzelman and bounced out third to first. Two-all-one strike now. Meyer winding delivery.
- 1:30:51Ball three, low inside. That first man on in a tie game at the end, of course, is a big break. That's an explosive club, such as the Yanks, so all three games have been tighter than drums.
- 1:31:10Three-on-one. He throws. Strike two, called. Another down-breaking jug-handled curve. Heinzelman hurled the first seven and two-thirds, and Sandy got the final man out in the eighth, but he went out for the pinch hitter, as Zoya had a gamble to take away his ace reliever.
- 1:31:30The full count of early Johnson. The big pitch. He swings, the line drives, beats the left. Mayo moving back, grabs it. He almost overplayed the ball, moving back, and then moved in a stride, landed his feet on the side, and speared it for the put-out.
- 1:31:45One down. Now Mates. The big fit for the Anki homerun came from another left-handed swinger, Johnny Mize, who is now out of the game.
- 1:32:06Here is Mates batting left-handed. Take strike one call. The screwball caught the outside corner. The fast pitch. That is thrown, of course, with a risk breaking in, and a way to left-handed batters from a right-hatter.
- 1:32:20Second pitch. Strike two call. That screwball broke a foot. This fellow is a tremendous campaigner, Mayer. He, of course, has been his own worst enemy at times, implying to curb his temper, but he has an enormous desire to win.
- 1:32:38Nothing in two. One away, nobody on. Last of the ninth try scored 2-2. Russ Mayer delivers. Mates swings and it's in. Look him up.
- 1:32:52Now Woodling. That is, the pitcher, of course, has moved up in a slot. Woodling, who is the left-fielder. The pitcher would then bat fifth, and the first baseman, Collins, would move up sixth.
- 1:33:07The batting order should read, Resudo, Coleman, Berra, DiMaggio. The pitcher, Collins, Johnson, Mates, and Woodling, who is batting in ninth position, but playing left-field.
- 1:33:17Batting left-handed. Mayer delivers. Strike one call. This is the second trip for Gene. He popped out to short.
- 1:33:32As a finisher for Lopez, in the eighth inning. Swing and cut the foul behind the plate. A ball that was delivered high and was starting to break down low. Gene was trying to meet the ball on a hanging break and got a lazy foul rolling behind the plate.
- 1:33:50Strike two. Strike two.
- 1:34:01Two gone. Nobody odd. Last half of the ninth inning. Woodling with candid swingers. Fyre, way ahead, 0-2. Gortyze, 2-2. In the big, majestic motion. He kicks, delivers. As a hopper, over the mound. Moving in, blood-worth.
- 1:34:17Hopped it. Hopped it. Goes the first. Not on time. Up, down, up again. Going out on time. It may go. No, it goes as an error. On the...
- 1:34:32He hit it. Bait it. He switched off. An in-field single to the second baseman. Scratch. Now, Razuto. That was a high, chopping ball. It went behind the mound. Blood-worth charged it and an anxiety to throw it first, lost it entirely.
- 1:34:51Went as a single to the second baseman. Strike one called on Razuto. Furball. Bill is offered to officially, he was passed twice by Heinzelman. Hopped a second and bounced out the third. All trips again, Heinzelman. As a matter of fact, he was the second out before Ken. Walked three Yankees in a row on that big eighth inning.
- 1:35:10Nothing I wanted to build. The pitch. Ball one. Dust a bit. Weaves that low and outside. One-on-one. One ball, one strike. Two gone. Runner at first base. Jean Woodling. Fire and a big stretch. Six throws.
- 1:35:38A swing. Align drive. A sweet save by Bloodworth. The runner kicks the ball. The runner kicks the ball and he may... Now he calls him safe.
- 1:35:50Now, Bloodworth dives to his own right and has ever to trap the ball, which he did, but is suited back to the bag. And Heinz and I, Woodling, split, but was already in the bag when the ball hit his foot. So, as far as Tomlin was concerned, he had reached base safely. He had reached second court and thus did not kick the ball while in actual play.
- 1:36:15With one of those things having already touched the field. So, everybody is safe and it goes as a single off the second base.
- 1:36:34On that play, Bloodworth made an excellent effort to move the ball. Kick it almost as a matter of fact back to the bag so that Hamlet could kick the ball up to try to force. But it went for naught.
- 1:36:47We've seen all silly bullpen activities. The Yankees have runners on at first and second. Woodling at second. Resid all with a single.
- 1:36:58At first, the first hit of course was a scratcher. The second was a pretty well hit ball and Bloodworth made a college try effort on it. Residing it from Woodling to the outfield.
- 1:37:08Now, Jerry Coleman, who knocked in the first run. So, the Yankees have scored two. The second run, officially, was not fatted in. It came home on an error.
- 1:37:21Bobby Brown was batting for Hank Bauer with the bases loaded and two gone in the eighth inning. And as Hamlet raced towards second base to pick it up and force out Demond Joe coming in, he lost the handle.
- 1:37:37Well, we've had some odd fielding plays but it's one of those kind of games on which the fans hear Ford. H-Ford on their feet. Ready for the break.
- 1:37:47Now, the right hand of Meyer facing Coleman. The right hand is battered. Delivers. Strike one ball. Curve ball. The rough inning now.
- 1:37:56Last of the ninth and a do or die threat by the Yankees here at the tail end of the regulation distance.
- 1:38:09Now, ball one strike out. He checks it second. He comes to the plate. A high curve too close. Ball one. Jerry has two hits.
- 1:38:22And he lined into a double play and he had a walk thrown in. Matter of fact, he batted in first run and scored the second for New York.
- 1:38:31That came in the eighth inning. Yankees scored their first from the third and the field for sixth and the seventh. What a great opportunity.
- 1:38:39Whiteout came the ninth. One on one counter-calling. Delivery. The swing. It drives off to a deep left center field. Moving over for the ball.
- 1:38:48Can't get it. Dean Woodley. The Yankee twins. Three to two. Coming across the plate is Dean Woodley.
- 1:38:55They were playing on the shuttle and the ball dropped in between Ashburn and Jackie Mayall in left center field and Jerry Coleman.
- 1:39:02Rusty comes the hitting hero of the New York Yankees who consequently sweep the first three games of the World Series all by one run margin.
- 1:39:10One to nothing. Two to one. And three to two. And Russ Meyer, of course, is a very, very unhappy person right now.
- 1:39:20As he slopes, goes the dugout and gives us outfielders a dark look for two speedy man, Mayall and Ashburn, but not catch up with the ball.
- 1:39:29So the winning run has scored and is earned with two outs. One run. Three hits. No errors. And two and left on.
- 1:39:39New York Yankee. Three runs. Seven hits. No errors. The Phillies two runs. Ten hits. Two errors. The winning pitcher is stark. The losing pitcher is Meyer.
- 1:39:49A great ball game brought with consistent drills all after the home with a big break game when Hamner earned in the eights to allow the tying run to score.
- 1:39:57And the Yankees wiped out a big field threat in the top of the ninth. And that's all she wrote before 64,505.
- 1:40:05The Sacrate 1, on a jollette cavalque du scores.
