- 0:00Speaker 1: I have a list and list and list of what.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Phrases our parents used that would never fly with today's kids.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Hmmm, things that they say you mean?
- 0:13Speaker 2: Well, okay, there are many phrases our parents use that
- 0:17Speaker 2: would never fly with today's kids, who are largely plugged
- 0:20Speaker 2: into discussions of emotional intelligence and therapy terms that unpack
- 0:24Speaker 2: and unravel traditionalist language. Kids today are more emotionally and
- 0:29Speaker 2: socially aware. You need to talk to them differently. Okay,
- 0:34Speaker 2: says you, says this study. Okay, here, I was waiting
- 0:41Speaker 2: for Carrie to play the thing, but.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I guess I'm having trouble here.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Here's the first here's the first one, because I said so,
- 0:51Speaker 2: according to a study.
- 0:52Speaker 1: That won't fly with today's guys.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I guess not. Parents who have experienced their own adverse
- 0:56Speaker 2: childhood experiences in trauma tend to repeat the cycle with
- 0:59Speaker 2: their own kids. It's because I said so is one
- 1:01Speaker 2: of the phrases our parents to use. It would never
- 1:03Speaker 2: fly with today's kids. It's no longer a powerful phrase
- 1:06Speaker 2: for parents to get what they want, meaning kids don't
- 1:10Speaker 2: care that.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Kids never cared about that phrase because I said so,
- 1:15Speaker 4: And you know, you know how I know that because
- 1:17Speaker 4: I said so.
- 1:18Speaker 2: But I'm being that used to work with kids, Like
- 1:22Speaker 2: all right, well mom said so, so I guess I have.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I don't think it is today or not. Will not
- 1:28Speaker 3: abide lily, it work on me.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I see, I'm kind of left out of this list
- 1:32Speaker 1: because I don't have any kids, so I have to
- 1:34Speaker 1: judge by you guys responses. Well, my and yours are
- 1:39Speaker 1: certainly skewed.
- 1:41Speaker 3: My kids.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I don't think I would ever say that to them.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Uh, stop being so dramatic or stop being so sensitive.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You can't say that today. Probably said that too. You
- 1:55Speaker 2: were probably told that when you were a kid.
- 1:57Speaker 4: You think you think you think I would have been
- 2:01Speaker 4: I would never nobody would say that.
- 2:03Speaker 2: That means healthy parents show up to support their kids.
- 2:06Speaker 2: This is today, not back then. Teach them emotional intelligence,
- 2:10Speaker 2: work with them to set boundaries, express their needs.
- 2:14Speaker 4: So you people who are listening by the way, whose
- 2:16Speaker 4: kids are now grown up and have left home, you're
- 2:18Speaker 4: all failures.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I'll give you something to cry about.
- 2:22Speaker 3: I want something to cry about them. Give you.
- 2:24Speaker 2: My dad used to say that to me phrases like
- 2:26Speaker 2: this one, or it hurts me more than it hurts you,
- 2:29Speaker 2: Like if they're spanking.
- 2:30Speaker 3: You them anymore.
- 2:32Speaker 2: But no, like in the past, that's something they would say,
- 2:36Speaker 2: this hurts me.
- 2:36Speaker 3: More than it hurts you.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Dad tried saying that, and I said, oh, I don't
- 2:39Speaker 1: think so.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Now parents take time to sit with their kids and
- 2:45Speaker 2: talk things through.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Work have corporal punishes.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Not so well, get over it, Oh, get over it.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Like if your kids are upset about something.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Parents today just about all of these said, would you
- 3:00Speaker 4: send me this list because I'm going to start using these.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Don't come home until the street lights come on.
- 3:07Speaker 3: We all know that's work.
- 3:08Speaker 1: No, that's worded wrong. It's you had to be home
- 3:12Speaker 1: before the street lights came on, not don't come home untill. Oh.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I read that this morning and I went, that's worded no.
- 3:19Speaker 2: It means that's your cue.
- 3:20Speaker 3: That's come home. When the street lights come on, you
- 3:23Speaker 3: get home.
- 3:23Speaker 2: But but kids today don't have unsupervised play largely. Yeah,
- 3:29Speaker 2: play dates and everything is organized and.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Yeah, no fun. They don't have fun anymore.
- 3:37Speaker 1: You brought this on yourself, that's true.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Parents who rely on guilt tripping to get what they
- 3:44Speaker 2: want are essentially emotionally blackmailing their children by suggesting they're
- 3:48Speaker 2: at fault for sparking conflict or discomfort simply by expressing
- 3:52Speaker 2: their opinions or even making a mistake. A phrase like
- 3:55Speaker 2: this encourages children to live in an anxiety perceived failure.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Oh you just wait till your father gets home.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Mom would say that all the time.
- 4:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 4:05Speaker 1: They don't say that anymore.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Why not, because that's that's the father should be the enforcer.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that means mom doesn't have the authority to discipline
- 4:14Speaker 2: you as is.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I know your dad hits harder. That's yeah.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Well, and it's it's making kids afraid of their father,
- 4:21Speaker 2: that's not It's not okay, you have it easier than
- 4:26Speaker 2: I did as a kid.
- 4:29Speaker 3: I used to walk two miles to school. You know,
- 4:32Speaker 3: it is. It's that.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But don't well, my dad used to use this as
- 4:35Speaker 1: an example because he didn't have indoor plumbing.
- 4:39Speaker 2: But it's true. Most of our kids have it better
- 4:42Speaker 2: than we had, and we had than our page.
- 4:44Speaker 1: It should well, it should be that.
- 4:45Speaker 3: It should be my kids are nothing but little freeloaders.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Uh, if you loved me, you would do this, don't don't.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you know, yeah, that's great. Use love as
- 4:55Speaker 3: a blackmail.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Well, mom never said that, but she said, would you
- 4:59Speaker 1: for me? Would you do this for me?
- 5:00Speaker 2: And how do you say no?
- 5:01Speaker 3: How do I say no?
- 5:03Speaker 2: And finally, you're right, I'm a horrible parent. Like when
- 5:08Speaker 2: kids would yell at you and say you're.
- 5:10Speaker 1: A horrible dad, you're the worst dad ever. You're right,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I'm a horrible parent.
- 5:15Speaker 4: I would I would never ever ever allow my kids
- 5:19Speaker 4: to say that, or I would never say that to
- 5:21Speaker 4: my kids because they would say, no, it's true, you are.
- 5:25Speaker 2: We've looked around.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Yeah, we've compared you with other periods. You know, why
- 5:30Speaker 3: can't you be like so and so's parents.
- 5:35Speaker 1: So there you go. Not sure how I'd handle it.
- 5:36Speaker 3: I'm glad I don't have kids. Yeah, you're lucky to
- 5:38Speaker 3: worry about anything.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You're lucky, especially after watching that adolescent show.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Did you watch it?
- 5:43Speaker 1: Yes, we'll talk about it coming up.
- 5:45Speaker 3: We've hoped you'd enjoyed.
