- 0:53Speaker 1: to the end of the work week. So hey, however,
- 0:55Speaker 1: your Monday's treating you, I hope you, hope you hoping
- 0:58Speaker 1: that it treats you well coming off the weekend. The
- 1:03Speaker 1: producer of the program is Jay Carman. Who did not
- 1:05Speaker 1: who did not make the road trip down to see
- 1:08Speaker 1: the girlfriend in Houston this weekend?
- 1:09Speaker 2: Correct? Correct?
- 1:11Speaker 3: It was. It was an Austin weekend. It was a
- 1:14Speaker 3: very very toasty weekend. My first Texas summer continues to
- 1:19Speaker 3: impress in terms of the heat.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Let's just put it that way.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Well, wait a minute.
- 1:22Speaker 1: You say it's your first Texas summer, did you, And
- 1:25Speaker 1: all the time you were student in Texas, you never
- 1:27Speaker 1: spent one summer in Austin. You would go home to
- 1:30Speaker 1: DC or wherever you were spending other places. That's right,
- 1:34Speaker 1: you never spent a summer in Austin, Texas till this summer.
- 1:36Speaker 3: No, sir, hey handling it well, it'd be a lot
- 1:43Speaker 3: better with the AC up at full strength than that.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Saga continues, still going on with the apartment, saying, huh,
- 1:48Speaker 3: still still hoping to get some sort of relief in
- 1:53Speaker 3: that department.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But what it was the management say of the apartments.
- 1:59Speaker 1: We're sorry, they said, we're sorry. Here's a portable AC
- 2:03Speaker 1: to make your.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Apartment cooler, wildlife goodness while we wait to fix what's
- 2:06Speaker 3: going on with your real one.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Wow, so the real one doesn't work at all.
- 2:11Speaker 3: It works, but it cannot keep up in the mornings.
- 2:15Speaker 3: We've got no issue in the afternoons. I'll set it
- 2:19Speaker 3: to a number usually happen about seventy four seventy five.
- 2:23Speaker 3: The number it reads will be anywhere between seventy eight
- 2:26Speaker 3: and eighty until I go to sleep. So that's why
- 2:28Speaker 3: they got me a portable in there. So other than that, Creig,
- 2:32Speaker 3: it's going great. The long sunlight reminds me of my
- 2:34Speaker 3: time up in North Dakota. And you know in Austin
- 2:39Speaker 3: when we do get rain, it's like it's like streaks
- 2:42Speaker 3: of a few days. I'm not used to that. I'm
- 2:44Speaker 3: used to a big storm kind of blowing through right right.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I had an uncle who used to talk about, you know,
- 2:51Speaker 1: I grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, which was in
- 2:53Speaker 1: Guilford County, the county directly to the south bordering with
- 3:00Speaker 1: Golford County where my father grew up in the small town.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Of Ashboro, North Carolina.
- 3:05Speaker 1: It was in Randolph County, and I had an uncle
- 3:08Speaker 1: used to talk about because we used to get a
- 3:10Speaker 1: lot more rain in North Carolina and it would like
- 3:12Speaker 1: blow in on whatever a Thursday, and my uncle would say, yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 1: it looks like it's about to set in, it said
- 3:20Speaker 1: little Randolph County rain.
- 3:22Speaker 2: It would just set in and you get rain.
- 3:24Speaker 1: That's why when I first came to Texas, I hated
- 3:27Speaker 1: rain so much. I didn't mind the one hundred degree
- 3:31Speaker 1: days at all. It was like bringing on. When I
- 3:32Speaker 1: became a homeowner, it took on a different meaning for me,
- 3:36Speaker 1: you know, wanting to try to keep my yard alive.
- 3:40Speaker 1: So I you know, back then, it didn't bother me
- 3:43Speaker 1: at all, and it still doesn't bother me. Summer does
- 3:45Speaker 1: not bother me as much as the dead of winter does.
- 3:50Speaker 1: That bothers me more when it's just absolutely paralyzing cold,
- 3:54Speaker 1: which you got used to being up in North Dakota.
- 3:57Speaker 2: You were used to it.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Even DC can get pretty cold in the winter, but
- 3:59Speaker 1: it also get really hot, muggy in the summertime too.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it can. It can feel soupy out there for sure.
- 4:04Speaker 3: And the North Dakota winter, I mean the sun not
- 4:08Speaker 3: coming up until nine thirty in the morning. That's that's
- 4:10Speaker 3: something I was never going to get used to. Wow,
- 4:13Speaker 3: living a half story below ground. My first winter in
- 4:17Speaker 3: North Dakota, when we got one hundred inches of snow
- 4:21Speaker 3: to shovel myself out the door.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I sti't know that how I could deal with that. Uh,
- 4:26Speaker 1: fortunate I did it. But the summer, we know, it's
- 4:28Speaker 1: pretty cot I take it to you have a swimming
- 4:30Speaker 1: pool at your apartment.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Well it's just recently reopened.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Oh really, so I said, issues with the pool? Issues
- 4:36Speaker 2: with the pool too?
- 4:38Speaker 1: Was it just like and clean it or was it
- 4:41Speaker 1: just some sort of broken part of course.
- 4:44Speaker 3: So, but I did find myself two weekends ago over
- 4:49Speaker 3: a deep eddy pool, and also I needed summer relief.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Yeah there you go. All right, so you went over
- 4:53Speaker 1: there and you enjoy it? Yeah, okay, good, Yeah, such
- 4:57Speaker 1: is the summertime. Such is the summertime. We have the
- 5:00Speaker 1: text line up and if anybody wants to pop in
- 5:03Speaker 1: on the text line, you're more than welcome to do that.
- 5:05Speaker 1: What you do is you text the word Texas follow
- 5:08Speaker 1: by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So you text the word Texas follow by your question
- 5:15Speaker 1: or comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging
- 5:20Speaker 1: and data rates may apply. Here's my question for the
- 5:22Speaker 1: day for anybody wants to answer, what was the hottest
- 5:28Speaker 1: job you ever had? And by hottest, I don't mean
- 5:33Speaker 1: really neat, you know, it's something that you really enjoyed.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I'm talking about temperature. What was what was.
- 5:41Speaker 1: The hottest job you ever had? I'll tell you what
- 5:46Speaker 1: mine was. When I first came out to Texas. I
- 5:50Speaker 1: was between semesters of college, so it was like find
- 5:55Speaker 1: a summer job. So I went to work for one
- 5:57Speaker 1: of those temporary services manpower I believe was called where
- 6:01Speaker 1: you did. They just send you out to a job
- 6:03Speaker 1: site and you do stuff for like three fifty an
- 6:06Speaker 1: hour back in the day, and I did various and
- 6:10Speaker 1: sundry things. One time I had to unload with another
- 6:14Speaker 1: guy who was in his early to mid forties and
- 6:18Speaker 1: really had not worked much in his life and really
- 6:20Speaker 1: was not really that interested in working, even though he
- 6:23Speaker 1: was employed. We were supposed to unload two hundred mattresses
- 6:29Speaker 1: off a forty five foot truck and load them into
- 6:34Speaker 1: a forty foot truck five fewer feet of storage space.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And when we opened the doors to the to the
- 6:42Speaker 1: trailer of the eighteen wheeler, it was like it were
- 6:45Speaker 1: jammed in there, and i'llo, how are we going to
- 6:46Speaker 1: get these in a forty foot But we did.
- 6:49Speaker 2: That was that was a hot job. I had some
- 6:51Speaker 2: other ones, but there's no doubt what the hottest job
- 6:54Speaker 2: I ever.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Had was getting paid to work out. I got sent
- 6:57Speaker 3: to a place, and.
- 7:03Speaker 1: One thing I learned by working for those temporary services
- 7:05Speaker 1: during the summer between semesters of college. This was before
- 7:08Speaker 1: I was selling the T shirts, and so that happened
- 7:10Speaker 1: the next summer.
- 7:11Speaker 2: It started in eighty.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Hopefully those venues weren't too hot.
- 7:14Speaker 1: No, it was almost all inside. We did work Texas
- 7:17Speaker 1: Gym and the Cotton Bowl, and they got pretty hot.
- 7:19Speaker 1: There was that, but mainly everything was into arenas and
- 7:24Speaker 1: so that was okay. But they working for these temporary services,
- 7:32Speaker 1: you quickly established a reputation. They had like a file,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and everybody who were the workers and who were kind
- 7:40Speaker 1: of coasting by and not really had to be told
- 7:43Speaker 1: to work, and we're always wanting to know when their
- 7:45Speaker 1: break was, or when their lunch was and all that stuff.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And then there was the file of the that included me, fortunately,
- 7:51Speaker 1: of those who showed up and went to work, because
- 7:54Speaker 1: that's what we wanted to do.
- 7:55Speaker 2: We needed to make some money and we needed to work.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So they tended to send the ones who would work
- 8:03Speaker 1: hardest to the somewhat easier jobs because they appreciated what
- 8:09Speaker 1: we were doing. And we're trying to get the other
- 8:11Speaker 1: people who weren't working as hard into the rhythm by
- 8:15Speaker 1: sending them to some of the tougher jobs. They had
- 8:19Speaker 1: mixed results with that. Some people completely flating down on it.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Other people they were okay and kind of worked themselves
- 8:24Speaker 1: into it well once they accidentally. This is what they
- 8:27Speaker 1: told me, anyway, sent me to this one thing. They
- 8:31Speaker 1: did not intend to send this to me. Send me
- 8:34Speaker 1: to this, and they proceeded to prove it later. But
- 8:39Speaker 1: they send me to a place where our job was
- 8:45Speaker 1: to sandblast the insides of industrial air conditioning units. And
- 8:56Speaker 1: they put us in the best way described it as
- 9:00Speaker 1: to say, it's like a deep sea diving outfit. And
- 9:05Speaker 1: they put us in this big, heavy, heavy kind of
- 9:10Speaker 1: canvas uniform and then had a big helmet on it,
- 9:15Speaker 1: like a deep sea diver's helmet, with an air hose
- 9:19Speaker 1: that went in there and that blew cool layer in there.
- 9:21Speaker 1: But then you could go and you couldn't see really well,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and you would go inside there and they would give
- 9:25Speaker 1: you the sand blasting like hose and you had to
- 9:28Speaker 1: sand blast the rust off of the inside of these
- 9:32Speaker 1: air conditioning units in the dead of summer. And it
- 9:37Speaker 1: was brutally hot. But I did it. I got through it.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I went through it all. I was kind of intrigued
- 9:44Speaker 1: by the job itself, but it was miserably hot, and
- 9:49Speaker 1: so I did it. And when I got home, like
- 9:53Speaker 1: it was like from a seven am to three pm
- 9:56Speaker 1: kind of thing. When I got home, they called me.
- 9:58Speaker 1: The service called me about four four thirteen afternoons, said
- 10:01Speaker 1: did we send you to something something air conditioning supply
- 10:05Speaker 1: or whatever. I'm like, yes, Oh, We're so sorry. We
- 10:09Speaker 1: did not intend to send you to that. You've been
- 10:10Speaker 1: one of our better workers.
- 10:11Speaker 2: We didn't. We didn't want to send you to that.
- 10:14Speaker 1: We're gonna give you a little more per hour on that,
- 10:17Speaker 1: and then we're going to send you where. We're not
- 10:18Speaker 1: going to send you to a thing like that again.
- 10:20Speaker 1: And they ended up sending me after that to like it.
- 10:24Speaker 1: It was an office for like oil and gas exploration company.
- 10:29Speaker 2: But I was just like an office guy moving credenzas
- 10:31Speaker 2: and file cabinets for the rest of the summer.
- 10:34Speaker 1: So in a nice air conditions officer office. So it
- 10:37Speaker 1: was it was pretty easy after that, but that sam
- 10:41Speaker 1: blasting the sides off the inside of industrial air conditioning
- 10:45Speaker 1: units outside in one hundred degree heat.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Was not much fun. That that was not much fun.
- 10:52Speaker 1: The next summer before start working in the concerts, actually
- 10:55Speaker 1: worked in a liquor store. It would kind of be
- 10:58Speaker 1: like working at twin liquors or you know, one expects
- 11:03Speaker 1: one of those. And that was the summer of nineteen eighty,
- 11:07Speaker 1: which until a few years ago was the string of
- 11:10Speaker 1: the longest consecutive one hundred degree one hundred degree days
- 11:15Speaker 1: in the state of Texas. It was like fifty two
- 11:17Speaker 1: in a row, and you know, and you were carrying
- 11:21Speaker 1: like cases of beer out in the cars for some
- 11:23Speaker 1: customers or ringing them up on the cash register.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Go back, and there were like two or three of us.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And when we had the opportunity to go back into
- 11:29Speaker 1: the beer box, I go because it was forty degrees
- 11:31Speaker 1: back and there was nice as opposed to it. It was
- 11:34Speaker 1: because the door opening close so much to the actual
- 11:37Speaker 1: store itself. It was like eighty five degrees in there,
- 11:41Speaker 1: and then you go outside where it was one hundred
- 11:44Speaker 1: degrees plus every day. Centennial Liquors up in Dallas, that
- 11:48Speaker 1: was that was where I'd worn in the summer of eighty. So, yeah,
- 11:51Speaker 1: it was that was something else. But yes, the deal
- 11:56Speaker 1: of the industrial air conditioning units, Yeah, that was that
- 12:03Speaker 1: was the hottest job I ever had.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I was what would you say was the hottest
- 12:07Speaker 2: job you ever had?
- 12:08Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 12:09Speaker 3: I was lucky I worked. I worked at a summer
- 12:11Speaker 3: camp from twenty seventeen to nineteen. But it was up
- 12:13Speaker 3: in Wisconsin. I mean we never I did that.
- 12:15Speaker 1: In the summer of eighty one, I was the creative
- 12:17Speaker 1: director for summer camp up in Granbury.
- 12:19Speaker 2: It was hot, but it wasn't like some of the
- 12:21Speaker 2: other stuff.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Yeah, it wasn't. It wasn't as brutal.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I mean, I think of some hot broadcast boots in
- 12:25Speaker 3: the North Woods League summer days in Battle Creek, Michigan,
- 12:29Speaker 3: with basically a tin box with no ac and kalamazoo
- 12:33Speaker 3: the same thing. I'm trying to lean outside for fresh air,
- 12:37Speaker 3: but if I do, I'm stuck behind a pole and
- 12:39Speaker 3: I can't see the action. Those I remember getting stuck
- 12:42Speaker 3: to my seat and sweaty because you saw all kinds
- 12:45Speaker 3: of different varieties.
- 12:46Speaker 4: But it's still broadcasting.
- 12:47Speaker 3: So it passed the time very well, even though sometimes
- 12:50Speaker 3: I would sweat through an entire shirt and be afraid
- 12:53Speaker 3: to share a row on the bus.
- 12:55Speaker 2: That's funny, that'd be funny. But DC I was.
- 12:58Speaker 3: I was in DC for a summer in twenty twenty.
- 13:01Speaker 3: But that was COVID and I was lucky enough to
- 13:03Speaker 3: call Future Stars Series baseball games with Flow Sports, and
- 13:08Speaker 3: I was gonna come down to Austin and do it
- 13:09Speaker 3: remotely from their offices. Because the COVID changes, they sent
- 13:13Speaker 3: the equipment up to DC. I was at my parents'
- 13:15Speaker 3: house calling games in the basement for three straight weeks,
- 13:18Speaker 3: five games a day.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Now in your folks basement, Yeah, I.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Had an on air sign taped up to the door.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Somebody said, hey, but you made twenty dollars. Yeah, that
- 13:28Speaker 2: job I had.
- 13:28Speaker 1: You're right, That's what I got for that day, right,
- 13:30Speaker 1: about twenty bucks after taxis for doing that for eight hours.
- 13:35Speaker 4: Twenty bucks an hour.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Nope, no, nope, it was about three fifty an hour.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I think by then something like that. But anyway, those
- 13:42Speaker 1: are the things that you go through sometimes when you're
- 13:45Speaker 1: up and run it. So anyway, somebody hanging in on
- 13:47Speaker 1: the text line, you can do that. Let me also
- 13:48Speaker 1: tell you this before we take the break, and then
- 13:51Speaker 1: I'm going to update you on the Rangers game, because
- 13:53Speaker 1: they've had they've had a blazing start to their game,
- 13:56Speaker 1: but the Mariners are starting to chip back, fight back
- 13:59Speaker 1: in it as well. We also have the talkback feature
- 14:07Speaker 1: on an iHeartRadio app. And if you want to share
- 14:09Speaker 1: your experience on that hottest job you ever had, doesn't necessarily,
- 14:14Speaker 1: by the way, I have to be in the summer.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Maybe you worked in a kitchen or someone it was
- 14:17Speaker 1: really hot in the winter time. I don't know, hottest
- 14:20Speaker 1: job you ever worked, and you can do that. You
- 14:25Speaker 1: can share that experience on our talkback feature, a talkback microphone.
- 14:29Speaker 1: What you do, if you haven't already, you download the
- 14:31Speaker 1: iHeart radio app. It's free, it's easy to do. Then
- 14:36Speaker 1: you search AM thirteen hundred the zone you search, it
- 14:39Speaker 1: pop straight up, and then when it pops up, you'll
- 14:43Speaker 1: see two buttons. One's a little white buttons kind of
- 14:45Speaker 1: the shape of an arrowhead or a triangle. That's to
- 14:47Speaker 1: listen to what is going on in the air at
- 14:49Speaker 1: that moment. But there's another button. It's a red button
- 14:52Speaker 1: with a little white microphone.
- 14:54Speaker 2: That's the key. Look for that white microphone inside the
- 14:56Speaker 2: red button.
- 14:57Speaker 1: You tap that button and then you can leave us
- 14:59Speaker 1: up to thirty seconds, leave us a thirty second message,
- 15:02Speaker 1: and you can do that on whatever the hottest job
- 15:04Speaker 1: you ever had was there's another reason I bring that up.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I kind of tease this. The other day. I got
- 15:11Speaker 1: a little more concrete information on this. Every year in
- 15:15Speaker 1: the summertime, we give away copies of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 15:17Speaker 1: Football Magazine. The folks with Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
- 15:23Speaker 1: I've always been very generous to us. They give us
- 15:26Speaker 1: some boxes of magazines to give away, and we give
- 15:29Speaker 1: them to you, the listener, And we do in a
- 15:33Speaker 1: variety of ways, whether it's a trivia thing or whether
- 15:37Speaker 1: it's just hey, the first person this hour to do it,
- 15:41Speaker 1: or whatever, but we always do it through the talk
- 15:45Speaker 1: back feature. So what we're going to do is coming up.
- 15:50Speaker 1: It'll be a week from today, a week from Monday.
- 15:55Speaker 1: It'll be Monday, August a week from today being Monday,
- 15:58Speaker 1: and next Monday, August third, we will give them away
- 16:03Speaker 1: one per hour, so it's three per show every day
- 16:10Speaker 1: of the show for three weeks, So you can do
- 16:15Speaker 1: the math on that. That's forty five magazines will give
- 16:18Speaker 1: away over the course of three weeks. Starting next Monday,
- 16:23Speaker 1: we'll give away one copy per hour for three weeks.
- 16:28Speaker 2: So we'll do that and you'll have to.
- 16:31Speaker 1: If you want to earn it or win it or whatever,
- 16:33Speaker 1: you got to do it through the talkback feature. So
- 16:35Speaker 1: again we'll you know, we'll refresh you on all of
- 16:38Speaker 1: that coming up in the coming days. On that all right,
- 16:41Speaker 1: coming up, we've got some baseball. It's got an interesting
- 16:44Speaker 1: college football a thing to get to in the three
- 16:48Speaker 1: o'clock hour, which we'll do. And we've got a little
- 16:54Speaker 1: bit different take on on Inconceivable today because pause, as
- 17:01Speaker 1: we know, this country is having to deal with cyclospora
- 17:07Speaker 1: right now, the cyclospariasis, and it's really kind of, you know,
- 17:13Speaker 1: really concerning a lot of folks because of what it
- 17:16Speaker 1: does to you if you get that parasite in you.
- 17:20Speaker 1: We'll bring you the words of someone who has a
- 17:23Speaker 1: little bit different take on it. We'll do that as
- 17:25Speaker 1: part of Inconceivable that's coming up.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us.
- 17:30Speaker 1: It's a Monday afternoon here, a hot Monday on Sports
- 17:33Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen under the Zone where you always listen
- 17:35Speaker 1: to us for free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Monday.
- 17:44Speaker 1: You might not be able to trust Monday, but we
- 17:46Speaker 1: have to deal with Monday, don't we.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Certainly we have to.
- 17:51Speaker 1: And sometimes it's Okay, here on a Monday, glad to
- 17:55Speaker 1: have you with us here on sports Radio AM thirteen
- 17:57Speaker 1: under the Zone. The Texas Rangers like Monday so far,
- 18:01Speaker 1: at least this particular Monday. They're wrapping up their weekend
- 18:04Speaker 1: series with the Seattle Mariners. Going into this afternoon with
- 18:08Speaker 1: a Monday Day game and Texas out of the gate
- 18:11Speaker 1: quickly after Seattle would scored a run. Well, actually, the
- 18:14Speaker 1: Rangers scored first bottom of the first, lead off homer
- 18:17Speaker 1: by Jack Peterson, his eighteenth homer of the year, which
- 18:21Speaker 1: made it one nothing Texas.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Seattle tied it on a Randy A.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Rose Arena homer in the top of the second, Then
- 18:26Speaker 1: in the bottom of a second Jock Peterson's truck again,
- 18:29Speaker 1: a three run blast, his nineteenth of the season. And
- 18:33Speaker 1: now and then Seattle came back with a run on
- 18:37Speaker 1: the top of the third. But in the bottom of
- 18:38Speaker 1: the third is he Gil durant as homeward for Texas
- 18:42Speaker 1: and the Rangers lead the Mariners five to two, and
- 18:46Speaker 1: that is in the bottom of the third inning in Arlington.
- 18:49Speaker 1: The Rangers have taken two of the first three games
- 18:51Speaker 1: an important weekend series. Going into that there are game
- 18:55Speaker 1: and a half up on the Mariners and two games
- 18:57Speaker 1: up on the Astros going into today's game, So you
- 18:59Speaker 1: have the that there's important a weekend spilling over carrying
- 19:04Speaker 1: over into Monday series in the American League West between
- 19:07Speaker 1: the Rangers and the Mariners, and the Rangers are still
- 19:10Speaker 1: whacking the ball around. Evan Carter's just doubled with one
- 19:14Speaker 1: out there in the bottom of the third inning. But
- 19:17Speaker 1: we'll keep you George Kirby starting for the Mariners today.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Three homers allowed. I'm just checking through his game logs.
- 19:24Speaker 3: He's only allowed multiple homers in one other start this season.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Wow.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Not somebody that gives up a lot of long balls.
- 19:30Speaker 3: It's a week contact specialist up there.
- 19:32Speaker 1: So he's giving up three homers in two and a
- 19:34Speaker 1: third innings so far as he works there.
- 19:37Speaker 2: But anyway, we'll keep you updated on that.
- 19:40Speaker 1: The Major League Baseball trade deadline is one week from today.
- 19:46Speaker 1: In fact, I think I think it rolls in at
- 19:50Speaker 1: what would be three o'clock hour time, three o'clock Central,
- 19:53Speaker 1: four o'clock eastern, might be five eastern, fourth Central, but
- 19:56Speaker 1: I was thinking it was four eastern, three Central next
- 20:00Speaker 1: Monday afternoon, and that's when the trade deadline hits. Our
- 20:05Speaker 1: MLB insider Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office,
- 20:09Speaker 1: will join us to, you know, maybe give a little
- 20:15Speaker 1: more insight into what teams might be looking for as
- 20:19Speaker 1: they approach the trade deadline. The buyers and sellers. We've
- 20:22Speaker 1: been saying, and Gino has been saying this for about
- 20:24Speaker 1: two weeks, and coming out of the All Star Game,
- 20:27Speaker 1: he would say, the next ten days are going to
- 20:31Speaker 1: tell a lot about whether teams are buyers or sellers. Why,
- 20:38Speaker 1: Because so many were still in the thick of the
- 20:40Speaker 1: fight for the playoffs. Some of that may have sifted
- 20:47Speaker 1: through in some of the division or wildcard races. In
- 20:51Speaker 1: others it might have muddied the waters even more so
- 20:55Speaker 1: it may really go down to the final.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Twenty four to forty eight hours before they this.
- 21:01Speaker 1: By the way, Jake Berger has just homered, so that's
- 21:04Speaker 1: four home runs that Kirby has allowed, a two run
- 21:06Speaker 1: shot and the Rangers have jumped all over the Mariners.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Now they're up seven to two as they bat in
- 21:14Speaker 1: the bottom of the third inning, Burger with a four
- 21:16Speaker 1: hundred and three foot one hundred five mile per hour
- 21:20Speaker 1: two run blast in the left field seats and it's
- 21:23Speaker 1: seven to two Texas as they.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Bat with one out in the bottom of the third.
- 21:27Speaker 1: So anyway, the trade deadline comes up next Monday, and
- 21:32Speaker 1: tomorrow on the show, will visit with Gene Watson to
- 21:34Speaker 1: talk more about, you know, what teams might be looking
- 21:38Speaker 1: for and teams at this point in the season. We've
- 21:41Speaker 1: just passed one hundred games now in ticking down to
- 21:46Speaker 1: close to about fifty to fifty five games left in
- 21:51Speaker 1: the regular season for these teams. Who are the buyers,
- 21:54Speaker 1: who are the sellers, Who are the contenders, who are
- 21:56Speaker 1: the pretenders? Things like that, So we'll get to that.
- 22:00Speaker 1: While there was one deal made of the weekend, and
- 22:03Speaker 1: it involved our producer Jay Herman's team, the Washington Nationals,
- 22:07Speaker 1: who made a deal with the Boston Red Sox straight
- 22:11Speaker 1: up swap. The Red Sox get infield to Curtis Mead,
- 22:15Speaker 1: the Nationals get left handed pitcher Connelly Early.
- 22:19Speaker 2: What do you make of this trade?
- 22:20Speaker 3: I think it makes sense for both teams. It's a
- 22:23Speaker 3: market right now that puts right handed hitting at a premium,
- 22:28Speaker 3: and Curtis Mead hits right handed, can play a couple
- 22:31Speaker 3: of different corner infield positions. Isn't really great at either
- 22:34Speaker 3: of them, but has really really found something as a
- 22:37Speaker 3: late breakout offensively. The Nationals got him basically for free
- 22:41Speaker 3: this offseason. It was one of the few new signings
- 22:44Speaker 3: that Paul Tabony, the new general manager there, brought in.
- 22:47Speaker 3: So he goes and trades for one of his old
- 22:50Speaker 3: draft picks in Connolly Early, who is dealing with some
- 22:54Speaker 3: elbow issues, and you don't know what you're going to
- 22:56Speaker 3: get from him in the short term as he rehabs
- 22:58Speaker 3: from that. What you've seen for a young, controllable arm
- 23:02Speaker 3: is already really encouraging. This is the guy who pitched
- 23:05Speaker 3: his tailoff in the wild Card Game last year. So
- 23:08Speaker 3: for a Nationals team starve for pitching, they get a
- 23:11Speaker 3: young arm that they can keep around for a while.
- 23:13Speaker 4: So I think it made sense for both teams.
- 23:14Speaker 2: All right.
- 23:16Speaker 1: ESPN their baseball analysis analysts agree with you on half
- 23:21Speaker 1: of it. They give the Nationals an AUS on this deal.
- 23:28Speaker 2: They only give the Red Sox a C on this.
- 23:32Speaker 1: They said, perhaps this is giving short shrift to pre
- 23:36Speaker 1: stat cast evaluators, but this feels like a deal that
- 23:39Speaker 1: would never have happened before the advent of tracking metrics.
- 23:43Speaker 1: In a nutshell, Early's savant page features a lot of
- 23:48Speaker 1: blue and gray bars that's bad, while meads have a
- 23:52Speaker 1: lot of pink and red really good. Surely it's more
- 23:55Speaker 1: complicated than that, but this is a good way to
- 23:57Speaker 1: think through a deal. It just doesn't work very well
- 23:59Speaker 1: for Austin in a more traditional model of trade related valuation.
- 24:05Speaker 3: So you're Washington, You're looking at that stat cast page
- 24:09Speaker 3: and thinking, Okay, that's because he was hurt.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Yep.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Yeah, so they say either way, this is a big
- 24:15Speaker 1: picture edition for the Gnats, and Early's promise not to
- 24:18Speaker 1: mention his years of team control make this more than
- 24:21Speaker 1: worth the value of Meeds that only profile.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Yeah, Early's page from last year is all read. So
- 24:28Speaker 3: if you're the Gnats, you think you have an explanation
- 24:31Speaker 3: for that big drop off, then you're all in on
- 24:33Speaker 3: this guy.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Yeah right, Okay.
- 24:37Speaker 1: They have They also have come out with their weekly
- 24:42Speaker 1: power rankings in baseball, and we always update those for you,
- 24:48Speaker 1: going in reverse order. At the bottom, Colorado Rockies their thirtieth,
- 24:54Speaker 1: the Angels at twenty nine, the Royals at twenty eight.
- 24:58Speaker 3: I was wrong on the Royals, Craig. I thought they
- 25:00Speaker 3: were a wild card team.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Yeah, A's at twenty seven, Giants at twenty six.
- 25:05Speaker 3: You talk about teams they're adding to the cellar list,
- 25:07Speaker 3: butt the A's there. They just lost Langeliars.
- 25:10Speaker 2: The Mets.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Had the next worst ranking before they actually salvaged the
- 25:17Speaker 1: final game of their weekend series against the Dodgers, and
- 25:20Speaker 1: they won one game in six tries against LA. They
- 25:23Speaker 1: were swept out at Dodgers Stadium early in the year.
- 25:26Speaker 1: LA took the first two games in New York. But
- 25:27Speaker 1: the Mets at a Lake rally and they won yesterday.
- 25:30Speaker 1: But they're twenty fifth. And that was another team a
- 25:33Speaker 1: lot was projected of and happened. Reds at twenty four.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Blue Jays, the defending American League champions, who were within
- 25:41Speaker 1: an eyelash a whisker of winning the World Series, really
- 25:45Speaker 1: been struggling. They're twenty third in the power rankings. Glad
- 25:48Speaker 1: Junior hadn't hit this year. No, it really hasn't.
- 25:51Speaker 2: There's several guys that that hit last year that are
- 25:53Speaker 2: not hitting well. Yeah.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Cosumo Okamoto is twenty three homers. The next highest on
- 25:57Speaker 3: the team is George Springer at eleven.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yeah, Springer hadn't had a good year. Clement has not
- 26:03Speaker 1: had a good year. They've had several guys just haven't
- 26:06Speaker 1: had a good year. Astros at twenty two, they have
- 26:10Speaker 1: been able to pull to win a couple of games
- 26:11Speaker 1: of first in the American League West, even though they're
- 26:13Speaker 1: four below five hundred. Twins at twenty one. Tigers at twenty, now,
- 26:18Speaker 1: that's a team that may be leaning towards the selling
- 26:22Speaker 1: part of instead of the buying because they had a
- 26:24Speaker 1: rough series against Kansas City over the weekend. In fact,
- 26:28Speaker 1: their comment is to trade or not to trade arguably
- 26:34Speaker 1: the best pitcher in the game. That's the question for
- 26:36Speaker 1: Detroit right now, whether Trek Scouba will be traded or not.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Orioles at nineteen, Padres eighteen.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Your Nationals at seventeen, a game above the five hundred mark,
- 26:47Speaker 1: had a good weekend against the Diamondbacks.
- 26:49Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, they sure did.
- 26:51Speaker 3: The key for the Nationals go into the ninth inning
- 26:54Speaker 3: with a big enough lead and then close your eyes
- 26:56Speaker 3: and pray that you held on too, said lead.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:01Speaker 1: The Rangers, they have right in the middle of the
- 27:02Speaker 1: pack with a Midland record right at fifty one.
- 27:05Speaker 2: At sixteen they.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Are entering today, they have a five hundred record with
- 27:11Speaker 1: a negative thirty run minus thirty run differential.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And yet the Rangers, who haven't.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Won the American League East American League West in a decade,
- 27:23Speaker 1: find themselves in first place of a mediocre division, with
- 27:26Speaker 1: Seattle a half game by Backs. The Rangers just a
- 27:29Speaker 1: half game up on the Mariners, but again they lead seven.
- 27:32Speaker 1: They're into a great start. They lead seven to two.
- 27:34Speaker 1: It's in the top of the fourth now. Diamondbacks fifteen, Cardinals,
- 27:38Speaker 1: fourteen Marlins thirteen.
- 27:41Speaker 3: They've lost twelve in a row. Craig, I think they
- 27:43Speaker 3: might be done. Yeah, they and I wouldn't have them
- 27:47Speaker 3: that high.
- 27:47Speaker 1: My power ranking dropped them. They dropped them five spots
- 27:50Speaker 1: that should be low wing to thirteen. They're still above
- 27:54Speaker 1: the five hundred mark.
- 27:55Speaker 4: They're two below.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Now this has some fifty to fifty one.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, they've they've lost three more than since they
- 28:03Speaker 3: came out.
- 28:03Speaker 1: All right, Pirates twelve, Mariners, eleven Guardians, ten, Red Sox
- 28:09Speaker 1: nine because that winning street they were on White Sox eight, Philly,
- 28:12Speaker 1: seven Cubs, six Yankees, five Raised, four Braves, three Brewers,
- 28:16Speaker 1: two in the Dodgers number one out of that. So
- 28:20Speaker 1: that was it and they'll updatos later. Again this week.
- 28:23Speaker 1: All right up next Inconceivable. Listen closely if you have
- 28:28Speaker 1: some concerns about the cyclist spora. That's next on Sports
- 28:31Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Second hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM
- 28:40Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone Craig Way alongside the producer Jake
- 28:43Speaker 1: Carmery radio show is moving along almost as quickly as
- 28:47Speaker 1: the Rangers Mariners game. They're in the sixth inning now,
- 28:49Speaker 1: They've been playing under an hour and a half and
- 28:53Speaker 1: the Rangers are up seven to two on Seattle as
- 28:55Speaker 1: they try to take three out of four and strengthen
- 28:58Speaker 1: their grip on first place in that American League West.
- 29:01Speaker 1: That could go for a while all the way down.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I think it'll go down to the final week of
- 29:05Speaker 1: the season, maybe the final day of the seat. It
- 29:07Speaker 1: has done that in some recent years, So we'll see
- 29:10Speaker 1: with the Rangers, Mariners, and Astros all kind of dueling
- 29:15Speaker 1: and duking it out.
- 29:15Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Tomorrow on the program, Gene Watson, our MLB insider, will
- 29:20Speaker 1: join us as we're counting down to days to the
- 29:23Speaker 1: trade deadline. It could wind up being a really big
- 29:28Speaker 1: buyer and seller market. It's a big sellers market right now.
- 29:32Speaker 1: The teams are trying to decide whether you know whether
- 29:35Speaker 1: to be sellers or whether to be buyers right now,
- 29:38Speaker 1: So we'll talk to him about that. Also, I mentioned
- 29:42Speaker 1: that starting a week from today, we'll give away copies
- 29:47Speaker 1: of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, as we do every year.
- 29:49Speaker 1: We'll give away one per hour every day for three weeks.
- 29:53Speaker 1: We'll do that, So that's coming up starting next Monday.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Starting tomorrow, begin our weekly Tuesdays with Tepper Conversation with
- 30:04Speaker 1: Greg Tepper, the editor in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 30:06Speaker 1: Football Magazine. It'll start tomorrow with him explaining the thought
- 30:12Speaker 1: process into this year's magazine, the look it had, the cover,
- 30:18Speaker 1: decision to have the Texas Tech brain Trust on the cover,
- 30:23Speaker 1: the gatefold cover. So there's a lot to talk about.
- 30:28Speaker 1: So well, he'll join us for our weekly conversations that
- 30:33Speaker 1: we do during football season, and the first one of
- 30:35Speaker 1: the brand new twenty twenty six college football season is tomorrow.
- 30:42Speaker 1: I've got some other college football notes to get to
- 30:44Speaker 1: in a moment. However, I did say that we were
- 30:47Speaker 1: going to get to some of your techs on the
- 30:51Speaker 1: text line, which includes the hottest job you ever had.
- 31:01Speaker 2: My hottest I don't mean the one you really really
- 31:04Speaker 2: enjoyed the most.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Maybe you did, maybe you enjoyed it. I'm talking about
- 31:07Speaker 1: temperature hot. I mentioned the hottest one for me being
- 31:11Speaker 1: sand blasting the rust out of industrial air conditioning units.
- 31:17Speaker 1: When I was it was a summer I was eighteen.
- 31:19Speaker 1: It was a summer nineteen seventy nine. It was eighteen
- 31:22Speaker 1: before it turned nineteen, and it was working for a
- 31:25Speaker 1: temporary service, and it was it was in like this
- 31:27Speaker 1: deep sea diver outfit. It was making like three point
- 31:30Speaker 1: fifty an hour to do so somebody takes hey, at
- 31:33Speaker 1: least you made twenty bucks right for the day doing that.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Our man Seapal said, in the summer of seventy three,
- 31:42Speaker 1: he had just graduated high school.
- 31:46Speaker 2: He worked some.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Farm machinery at a farm machinery factory in Temple. The
- 31:54Speaker 1: first of the first jobs, he ran a kiln heating
- 31:58Speaker 1: bushings to red hot in the summer. Had to close
- 32:02Speaker 1: down about noon because it just got too hot. The
- 32:05Speaker 1: boss noticed. I got a fifteen cent raise in a
- 32:08Speaker 1: few weeks up to two twenty five an hour.
- 32:09Speaker 2: There you go, there you go. See Powell running the
- 32:14Speaker 2: Kiln Gods.
- 32:16Speaker 1: That had to be fun and then our man CB
- 32:18Speaker 1: up in the PNW, the Pacific Northwest. Summer twenty twenty one,
- 32:22Speaker 1: my first summer in Washington State that is, and it
- 32:25Speaker 1: was the hottest summer in Washington State history where I live.
- 32:30Speaker 1: We hit one o seven. In Seattle hit one oh eight,
- 32:34Speaker 1: the hottest day in their history. It was my first
- 32:37Speaker 1: summer ever without AcOF.
- 32:40Speaker 2: How did you survive?
- 32:42Speaker 1: CB instaid it was unbearable and over one hundred and
- 32:45Speaker 1: fifty people plus people died in Washington State. Ended up
- 32:48Speaker 1: spending over six hundred dollars on a portable AC unit.
- 32:51Speaker 1: That November, we had AC installed in our house. Good
- 32:54Speaker 1: for you, Yeah, and I get it. I understand. You know,
- 33:00Speaker 1: when you live in a climate and in a place
- 33:05Speaker 1: where you don't have that much oppressive heat in the summertime,
- 33:14Speaker 1: it's probably pretty easy to go without AC.
- 33:17Speaker 2: I know several people who live up.
- 33:18Speaker 1: North and had non air conditioned homes. They just opened
- 33:25Speaker 1: their windows at night, it'll be fine. When I was
- 33:29Speaker 1: a little kid growing up in North Carolina, my parents
- 33:35Speaker 1: had one window unit air conditioning unit, and it was downstairs.
- 33:42Speaker 1: We were in a split level house, and that was
- 33:46Speaker 1: pretty much it. But we would open our windows at
- 33:48Speaker 1: night if we did that, but didn't it seemed milder
- 33:51Speaker 1: back then. I think it gets a lot hotter and
- 33:53Speaker 1: more humid nowadays, maybe global warming, I don't know, but
- 33:57Speaker 1: hotter even there in North Carolina. And we wouldn't dream
- 34:01Speaker 1: the more on the coastal areas of not having an
- 34:03Speaker 1: air conditioned placed to stay. So I do know, I
- 34:09Speaker 1: do know about uh uh those air conditioning units the window,
- 34:14Speaker 1: you know. I remember we got this big one, you
- 34:16Speaker 1: know whatever, the five thousand BTUs or whatever it was,
- 34:18Speaker 1: was a big, huge, big ac unit to put in downstairs.
- 34:22Speaker 1: And so my parents were going to move the outside
- 34:24Speaker 1: unit or that one downstairs unit smaller up to their
- 34:27Speaker 1: bedroom and put the new big one that was supposed
- 34:30Speaker 1: to keep the whole house cool. And I remember when
- 34:32Speaker 1: they were putting it in, my uncle was on the
- 34:35Speaker 1: inside and my dad was on the outside. Put it
- 34:37Speaker 1: through the window and it fell through the window and
- 34:38Speaker 1: my dad caught it to keep it from hinderground, and
- 34:41Speaker 1: it just put.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Big old cuts across his fingers or wherever's, and my
- 34:46Speaker 2: dad was like, yeah, that wasn't much fun, you know,
- 34:48Speaker 2: that kind of thing.
- 34:49Speaker 3: So, yeah, I understand. Did he save it, did he
- 34:52Speaker 3: keep it? Yeah, keep it intact, kept it intact. Uh,
- 34:56Speaker 3: And then it was great. It worked, It worked great afterwards.
- 34:59Speaker 3: But I am understand that when it was hot and
- 35:02Speaker 3: CB talking about that, and I remember that summer up there,
- 35:05Speaker 3: and I remember the summer when we broke the record
- 35:08Speaker 3: that I talked about earlier from nineteen eighty of fifty
- 35:12Speaker 3: two consecutive days above one hundred degrees in one market
- 35:17Speaker 3: in the state of Texas, and it broke it here
- 35:20Speaker 3: in Austin.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I want to say. It might have been fifty six
- 35:24Speaker 2: or fifty I don't know.
- 35:25Speaker 4: It was more.
- 35:25Speaker 1: And it was a few years ago. Most consecutive days
- 35:29Speaker 1: APT were above one hundred degrees.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Two thy eleven. This according to Kxan. Yep, oh, that's
- 35:36Speaker 3: not Cokay, this isn't consecutive. I'm sorry. This is days
- 35:39Speaker 3: in a year.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Okay.
- 35:40Speaker 3: That in twenty eleven. That summer there were ninety days
- 35:45Speaker 3: where it was over one hundred degrees.
- 35:47Speaker 1: That was the summer of the fires too, and the
- 35:49Speaker 1: massive fires, the wildfires down in Bastrop County and burned
- 35:55Speaker 1: up a lot of Bastrop County down there, and it
- 35:57Speaker 1: was a fire danger the entire summer, but.
- 36:00Speaker 3: It was more recent the consecutive day streak forty five days.
- 36:04Speaker 3: It ended August twenty second of twenty twenty three. Okay,
- 36:08Speaker 3: that's down here forty five. Like I said, it was
- 36:10Speaker 3: fifty two in the metroplex in there, but here in
- 36:12Speaker 3: the Austin are forty five.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember how hot it was. But I also
- 36:16Speaker 1: remember you pointed out all those days, ninety days of
- 36:19Speaker 1: one hundred or more throughout the course of the calendar
- 36:22Speaker 1: year twenty eleven.
- 36:23Speaker 3: And that had a twenty seven consecutive day streak, So
- 36:26Speaker 3: nothing compared to forty five.
- 36:27Speaker 4: But all in all, maybe that was the hotter sum Oh.
- 36:30Speaker 1: It was oppressive the entire year. And then like I said,
- 36:32Speaker 1: there was the danger because of all the wildfires. So
- 36:35Speaker 1: Bastrop County really got it bad. Smithville, Bastrop for folks
- 36:42Speaker 1: living out and that a friend of mine who was
- 36:44Speaker 1: teaching school in Bastrop at the time, remembering that folks
- 36:48Speaker 1: who lived out by Cola Vista and the Tahitian Village
- 36:56Speaker 1: area all of that were a lot of a lot
- 36:59Speaker 1: of homes and a lot of just you know, in
- 37:03Speaker 1: the Lost Pines area where a lot of lost, a
- 37:07Speaker 1: lot of pine trees in the Lost Pines were lost
- 37:09Speaker 1: due to the fires.
- 37:10Speaker 2: It was it was very very unfortunate there. Let me
- 37:14Speaker 2: jump to college football and wanted to do that.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Because there's a story that's come out today the athletic
- 37:24Speaker 1: reporting on this last year when UH Bill Belichick UH
- 37:34Speaker 1: took the North Carolina job. One of the one of
- 37:38Speaker 1: them more talked about developments of taking that job was
- 37:43Speaker 1: that he hired Michael Lombardi as his general manager. Longtime confident,
- 37:49Speaker 1: confidante and all of that. UH former NFL executive, three
- 37:54Speaker 1: decades of league experience.
- 37:56Speaker 4: Frequent podcast guest, yep and.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Arrived at North Carolina with Belichick before the twenty twenty
- 38:01Speaker 1: five season and was kind of put together in charge
- 38:05Speaker 1: of putting together a roster to assembl it. One point
- 38:10Speaker 1: five million dollars salary per year. Immediately became the highest
- 38:14Speaker 1: paid general manager in college football. He's sixty seven years
- 38:19Speaker 1: of age.
- 38:21Speaker 2: The team struggled.
- 38:25Speaker 1: All that other kind of stuff, and now now comes
- 38:31Speaker 1: word today that the University of North Carolina has placed
- 38:34Speaker 1: him on administrative leave. Now, the school provided no details
- 38:39Speaker 1: about the decision, said would have no further public comment
- 38:43Speaker 1: about it. The athletic is reporting that Lombardies leave is
- 38:49Speaker 1: connected to a human resources complaint, according to three people
- 38:53Speaker 1: briefed on the matter, but outa authorized to speak publicly.
- 38:57Speaker 1: UNC Football has also been a roach by the College
- 39:01Speaker 1: Sports Commission about a possible potential investigation, according to two
- 39:06Speaker 1: people briefed on the matter, but again not authorized to
- 39:09Speaker 1: discuss it publicly, with Lombardi's actions believed to be of
- 39:13Speaker 1: interest this College Sports Commission. The CSC is an enforcement
- 39:18Speaker 1: body that's a year old that looks into potential NIL violations, name,
- 39:24Speaker 1: image and likeness, as well as revenue sharing rules, and
- 39:29Speaker 1: it approves the third party deals with the athletes. Lombardi
- 39:32Speaker 1: has offered no comment on this. The school is saying,
- 39:37Speaker 1: as his standard procedure with personnel matters, leadership, staff and
- 39:41Speaker 1: student athletes are prohibited from addressing this topic further and
- 39:44Speaker 1: has no reflection on the merits. Per the North Carolina Hamdbook,
- 39:51Speaker 1: administrative leave quote should not exceed thirty days. Additionally, the
- 39:56Speaker 1: hambooks as employees like Lombardi, quote may be placed on
- 39:59Speaker 1: administrative by their supervisor for the duration of an investigation
- 40:04Speaker 1: into unsatisfactory job performance or unacceptable personal conduct.
- 40:11Speaker 2: So we'll see where that goes. Supposedly his.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Duty, his conduct, all this kind of stuff has according
- 40:24Speaker 1: to the story in the athletic quote, there's been an
- 40:27Speaker 1: appetite by some within the unc athletic department to move
- 40:32Speaker 1: on from Lombardy. And again they spoke to the athletic
- 40:36Speaker 1: on condition of anonymity out of fear of retribution and
- 40:39Speaker 1: a protect relationships as well. So what you don't know
- 40:43Speaker 1: is does this have to do with the specifics of
- 40:46Speaker 1: nil and student athlete earning opportunities? Is it about that
- 40:54Speaker 1: the HR department is overseeing all of that, So that's
- 40:56Speaker 1: why you don't know if it's that, or if it's
- 40:59Speaker 1: something specific with regard to Lombardi himself in actions that
- 41:03Speaker 1: he may have taken, or if he's just part of
- 41:05Speaker 1: it of the culture. And of course he's head of
- 41:07Speaker 1: that group that's doing that there, so that's going on there,
- 41:11Speaker 1: So that might be some unpleasant stuff with regard to
- 41:14Speaker 1: college football. We've got something that's a little more pleasant
- 41:16Speaker 1: to go back, and it's a pretty interesting article to
- 41:18Speaker 1: get to about college football getting ready to start. It's
- 41:23Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty eight season. You can't look back
- 41:26Speaker 1: over all one hundred and fifty eight years, but you
- 41:29Speaker 1: can take a look at some categorized incredible moments, and
- 41:35Speaker 1: we'll get to those coming up and again. If you
- 41:37Speaker 1: like to join in the in the give and take,
- 41:40Speaker 1: you can do it via text textas reaches. On the
- 41:43Speaker 1: text line text the word texas followed by your question
- 41:46Speaker 1: or comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging
- 41:49Speaker 1: and data rates may apply. There's that you can leave
- 41:53Speaker 1: us a voice message on the talkback microphone our talkback feature.
- 41:58Speaker 1: You download the iHeartRadio app, you do a search AM
- 42:01Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone. It pops straight up. Then you'll
- 42:04Speaker 1: see a little red butt with a white microphone in it.
- 42:06Speaker 1: You tap that button. You can leave us a message
- 42:08Speaker 1: up to thirty seconds with your offerings with it more
- 42:11Speaker 1: coming up here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the
- 42:13Speaker 1: zone of the iHeartRadio app.
- 42:15Speaker 4: Mary Mary where.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Here On a Monday, I decided today anyway, we would
- 42:24Speaker 2: just do.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Our return cuts songs that began with a letter M money.
- 42:32Speaker 1: So that's why early on the return cut was Monday Monday,
- 42:35Speaker 1: which is apropos for Monday.
- 42:36Speaker 2: This one.
- 42:39Speaker 1: One of the lesser kids, but still on their compilation
- 42:45Speaker 1: of their greatest hits from the Monkeys, Mary, Mary Craig
- 42:49Speaker 1: ever played s categories?
- 42:51Speaker 2: I had. It's been a long time, but I have.
- 42:53Speaker 4: You've already scored four points. Yeah, how about that Monday Monday,
- 42:56Speaker 4: Mary Mary.
- 42:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:58Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that every song should have the
- 43:00Speaker 1: same word twice. I'm just saying it should start with
- 43:03Speaker 1: a letter in. Oh, So we'll do that today. College
- 43:09Speaker 1: football notes here we are down to what is it for?
- 43:14Speaker 1: Forty days?
- 43:15Speaker 4: Oh, that's exciting.
- 43:17Speaker 3: That stuck up quickly, forty days to week zero or
- 43:20Speaker 3: forty days to Longhorn.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Football to long Horn football.
- 43:24Speaker 1: And as we draw closer, yep, forty days September fifth.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Yep, that's what I thought.
- 43:33Speaker 1: So as we draw closer to that, forty days out
- 43:39Speaker 1: for college football for.
- 43:42Speaker 2: The long Wars.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Now there are zero week games that you mentioned. And
- 43:45Speaker 1: it's funny because we were just talking about North Carolina
- 43:50Speaker 1: and it's it's not funny to the North Carolina football
- 43:53Speaker 1: program for certainly, but Michael Lombardi being placed on administrative leave,
- 43:57Speaker 1: it's thirty three days for them because they were on
- 44:00Speaker 1: the zero week, aren't they?
- 44:01Speaker 2: Against TCU in Ireland.
- 44:04Speaker 3: This is uh. I forget if that game is in
- 44:07Speaker 3: Ireland or real it's in Ireland.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that one's in Ireland, but the I'm just trying
- 44:14Speaker 1: to make sure it is.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Yeah, August twenty ninth.
- 44:16Speaker 4: In Dublin, eleven AM Central.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that was the game. Remember what was it? Last
- 44:20Speaker 1: year was the Georgia Tech Florida State Game or two
- 44:27Speaker 1: years ago the Georgia Tech Florida seth I was tickets.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Last year was the Georgia.
- 44:30Speaker 4: The air Lingus College Football Classic.
- 44:32Speaker 3: Last year was Iowa State and k stated.
- 44:36Speaker 2: They did far Mageddon.
- 44:37Speaker 4: Last year, which that felt a little wrong.
- 44:39Speaker 3: I mean, even with the great farming tradition of Ireland,
- 44:41Speaker 3: it still felt a little wrong.
- 44:45Speaker 2: So yeah, So there's.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Games on August twenty ninth, and as we mentioned that
- 44:56Speaker 1: one's on August twenty ninth, and there are other games
- 45:02Speaker 1: that weekend as.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Well on August twenty ninth, and.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Those would include in addition to North Carolina and.
- 45:16Speaker 2: TCU. I just had it. I just had a drawn
- 45:19Speaker 2: up there.
- 45:21Speaker 1: It is San Jose State and usc are are playing
- 45:27Speaker 1: on August twenty ninth, and I'm.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Trying to get it to cooperate. It's cooperating here But that's.
- 45:36Speaker 4: That's an I've got. I've got a couple others.
- 45:37Speaker 3: If you were looking for Week zero NC State, Yep,
- 45:41Speaker 3: takes on Virginia. That's the one in Rio, isn't it.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Apparently it got moved. It was supposed to be in Rio.
- 45:48Speaker 3: Now they're going to play it in Charlottesville. NC State
- 45:51Speaker 3: at Virginia.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Okay, Jacksonville State at North Dakota State is one North
- 45:59Speaker 1: Coast of state going D one FBS after all of
- 46:03Speaker 1: those years. Uh, they're they're beginning that transition. They're going
- 46:07Speaker 1: into the Mountain West Conference, aren't they?
- 46:09Speaker 3: They are they are, and they are going to be
- 46:14Speaker 3: absolutely stoked at that tailgate. I've got to picture Craig
- 46:19Speaker 3: of the North Dakota bucket list item that I checked
- 46:23Speaker 3: off going to a North Dakota State football game. I
- 46:26Speaker 3: believe they were playing Maine, but it was too cold
- 46:29Speaker 3: to tailgate. That won't be the case in Week zero. No,
- 46:33Speaker 3: it won't be.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Sacramento State, which is and that's that's the one. Sacramento
- 46:43Speaker 1: State is going to Division one FBS, but they're going
- 46:45Speaker 1: into a different conference, like the Mid American Conference or
- 46:48Speaker 1: something like that.
- 46:49Speaker 2: It's a really weird deal.
- 46:50Speaker 4: That's correct.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Wow, they're in the minute, They're in the MAC and
- 46:57Speaker 1: in North Dakota State is going to the Mountain West,
- 47:02Speaker 1: which I guess. I guess what that does is that
- 47:06Speaker 1: it demonstrates, I suppose the respect that they have for them.
- 47:15Speaker 1: I know Northern Illinois is going yeah, and North Dakota
- 47:18Speaker 1: State they're both going into the into the Mountain West
- 47:21Speaker 1: Conference this year. So and like for example, Phil Steel
- 47:25Speaker 1: picks North Dakota State out of ten teams, he picks
- 47:28Speaker 1: them fifth. He thinks are going to be a contender
- 47:31Speaker 1: right away. Of course, they're still in the transition period,
- 47:34Speaker 1: so it makes them Bowl ineligible. But I have a
- 47:36Speaker 1: feeling they're probably following that same category of James Madison
- 47:39Speaker 1: if they're good enough like that to petition and if
- 47:42Speaker 1: there's not enough Bowl eligible teams and maybe that happens. Uh,
- 47:47Speaker 1: Hawaii and Stanford are are playing in Florida State, New
- 47:53Speaker 1: Mexico State. So also Memphis at UNLV. UNLV likes that
- 47:59Speaker 1: zero week thing. They played Idaho State. I remember Dan
- 48:01Speaker 1: Mullen's first game, I think it was last year, and
- 48:05Speaker 1: they're playing Memphis there on that So that's the zero week.
- 48:09Speaker 3: Games Memphis has maybe more transfers in their starting line
- 48:13Speaker 3: up than anyone else on the.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Sport, and a new head coach since Ryan Silverfield is
- 48:18Speaker 1: the new head coach of the Arkansas.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Razorback Charles Hoff. Yeah, so there you are with that.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Okay, with that in mind, Bill Connley, whose work I
- 48:28Speaker 1: really do enjoy quite a bit from ESPN, wrote and
- 48:33Speaker 1: I think this kind of hits the nail on the
- 48:36Speaker 1: head with some things he said. In a few more weeks,
- 48:41Speaker 1: the one hundred and fifty eighth college football season will
- 48:43Speaker 1: kick off. It'll feature players on seven digit a year
- 48:47Speaker 1: contracts and coaches.
- 48:49Speaker 2: On eight digits a year.
- 48:52Speaker 1: It will finish with a twelve team playoff amid a
- 48:55Speaker 1: slate of forty something bowls. That's why I think, by
- 48:58Speaker 1: the way to North Dakota State, if they have a
- 49:00Speaker 1: successful season, has a chance, even in a transition year
- 49:05Speaker 1: to FBS status, might have a shot at landing a
- 49:09Speaker 1: bull berth.
- 49:09Speaker 3: If there's not enough bowl eligible teams, well, with teams
- 49:12Speaker 3: opting out of bulls too, you never know.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Well, that's true. It will feature, as Bill Colly rights,
- 49:19Speaker 1: conference games. These are conference games West Virginia, Utah, u
- 49:24Speaker 1: ce F, Oklahoma State, and USC Rutgers, but it won't
- 49:30Speaker 1: feature pitt West, Virginia, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, or usced.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Not to day.
- 49:35Speaker 1: So the games remain thrilling and Saturday's remain immaculate, but
- 49:38Speaker 1: it's sometimes worthwhile to step back and ask how the
- 49:40Speaker 1: heck did we get here with so with games broken
- 49:43Speaker 1: up in a key category like change agents like you know,
- 49:48Speaker 1: tactical innovations and conference realignment, to the things that keep
- 49:51Speaker 1: us coming back upsets, epic endings, there's one hundred games
- 49:55Speaker 1: that explain college football in the year twenty twenty six.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Now he li the hundred, but he does not rank
- 50:02Speaker 1: the hundred because he's got him split into categories. For example,
- 50:06Speaker 1: in the legends category. November eleventh, nineteen eleven. We all
- 50:10Speaker 1: know about this one, right. Carlisle eighteen Harvard fifteen was
- 50:15Speaker 1: Jim Forpe playing for Carlisle, playing for the legendary Pop Warner,
- 50:22Speaker 1: who was head coach. He rushed for one hundred and
- 50:24Speaker 1: seventy three yards against the typically untouchable Harvard defense.
- 50:29Speaker 2: Carlisle upset the Crimson.
- 50:32Speaker 4: This says he also kicked four field goals.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Nineteen twenty four Illinois or Michigan thirty nine fourteen.
- 50:41Speaker 1: That's when Red Grange scored four touchdowns in the first quarter.
- 50:46Speaker 1: Who could forget including returning to the opening kickoff Notre
- 50:52Speaker 1: Dame Army nineteen twenty four, Army Navy nineteen forty five,
- 50:57Speaker 1: the scoreless tie between Notre Dame and Army in nineteen
- 51:00Speaker 1: forty six.
- 51:01Speaker 4: I had the over in that game.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Oh that didn't work out, then did September sixth, nineteen eighty.
- 51:09Speaker 2: I remember this.
- 51:09Speaker 1: I was in college at the time, Georgia sixteen, Tennessee fifteen,
- 51:15Speaker 1: and it was the late Larry Munson that the iconic
- 51:21Speaker 1: play by play voice of the Georgia Bulldogs. He kept going,
- 51:23Speaker 1: He's running over people. Oh you Hersha Walker, By god,
- 51:27Speaker 1: I'm mighty. He ran through two men, herschell ran over
- 51:30Speaker 1: two men.
- 51:30Speaker 4: My god.
- 51:31Speaker 2: A freshman.
- 51:32Speaker 1: That was the game where he actually physically trampled over
- 51:36Speaker 1: Bill Bates, the future Dallas Cowboy. I mean just cleaded him,
- 51:40Speaker 1: just went straight over him.
- 51:44Speaker 2: And then in.
- 51:47Speaker 1: They talk about Nebraska for Florida, Florida State over Virginia Tech.
- 51:52Speaker 1: It was the Michael Vick game for Virginia Tech, the
- 51:56Speaker 1: Reggie Bush Crazy game in the fifteen forty two win
- 51:58Speaker 1: over Fresno and then they list Texas USC. Now all
- 52:04Speaker 1: he puts down is Bush Matt Leonard and White versus
- 52:06Speaker 1: Vince Young. Maybe the most legendary game of the twenty
- 52:09Speaker 1: first century. So that enough is a mouthful. And then
- 52:13Speaker 1: the one other game that he has listed is Auburn
- 52:18Speaker 1: over Alabama.
- 52:19Speaker 4: Oh I remember that game.
- 52:19Speaker 1: Yeah, when Alabama was up twenty four to nothing, Cam
- 52:22Speaker 1: Newton led to come back and they go on and
- 52:26Speaker 1: you know, and said the winds solidified Newton's one year
- 52:30Speaker 1: legend and introduced us to Harvey Updyke, the guy who
- 52:32Speaker 1: poisoned the tree.
- 52:34Speaker 4: And admitted to it on Fine Bomb.
- 52:36Speaker 1: Yeah, got prison time for it and then ended up
- 52:39Speaker 1: passing away later. All right, So that was the legend category.
- 52:43Speaker 1: He is an innovation category. Nineteen oh six, Chicago thirty nine.
- 52:49Speaker 1: That's University of Chicago Amos Alonzo stag coaching over Purdue
- 52:55Speaker 1: thirty nine.
- 52:55Speaker 2: Nothing that was opening it up with the.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Forward pass River Colorado, the larger splits with the offensive Lineman.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Nineteen sixty eight Texas Tech over Texas thirty one to
- 53:11Speaker 1: twenty two. But it was the invention of the wishbone
- 53:15Speaker 1: for Texas, which they didn't lose again until January seventy one.
- 53:19Speaker 1: After that won the back to back national titles Miami
- 53:23Speaker 1: over Oklahoma January first of eighty eight and Miami beating
- 53:33Speaker 1: Oklahoma's option and then Iowa Wesleyan over Grinnell in nineteen
- 53:39Speaker 1: eighty nine. He said, what's the big deal about that?
- 53:41Speaker 1: How mummies first went as a college head coach inventing
- 53:45Speaker 1: the air raid with Mike Leach on his staff, And
- 53:48Speaker 1: so it goes on down through some other categories as well.
- 53:52Speaker 1: They do list in the innovation Texas Tech over Texas,
- 53:56Speaker 1: the upset in Lubbock in two thousand and eight, the
- 54:00Speaker 1: Michael Crabtree catch. There are some other ones as well,
- 54:05Speaker 1: The's got one Bowls for better and Worse bowl games,
- 54:11Speaker 1: and a lot of Rose Bowl stuff. Also Notre Dame
- 54:17Speaker 1: beating Alabama and the Sugar Bowl after Notre Dame had
- 54:21Speaker 1: came back off of their bowl hiatus, first playing Texas
- 54:25Speaker 1: and back to back Cotton Bowls and then winning a
- 54:27Speaker 1: national championship by beating Alabama. Penn State over Miami when
- 54:31Speaker 1: Vinnie Testaverdy threw five interceptions in the game and Penn
- 54:34Speaker 1: State upset them to win the national title. Alabama over
- 54:40Speaker 1: Miami January ninety three, and they just just absolutely blast
- 54:45Speaker 1: them when Gene Stallings was coaching them, and the other
- 54:48Speaker 1: ones as well. Oklahoma from Florida State to win it's
- 54:51Speaker 1: national title in January of two thousand and one. So
- 54:56Speaker 1: there's all of these, all of these games listed and
- 54:58Speaker 1: it's a long read, and it's a really good There
- 55:00Speaker 1: were upsets Carnegie Tech over Notre Dame in nineteen twenty six,
- 55:06Speaker 1: Southern Miss over Alabama nineteen fifty three, Notre Dame stopping
- 55:10Speaker 1: Oklahoma's forty seven game winning streak in nineteen fifty seven,
- 55:14Speaker 1: Ucla upsetting number one Michigan State in the Rose Bowl
- 55:18Speaker 1: nineteen sixty seven, Michigan upsetting Ohio State. It was number
- 55:22Speaker 1: one November twenty second, nineteen sixty nine, twenty four to twelve.
- 55:26Speaker 1: That opened the door for Texas to win the national
- 55:28Speaker 1: title because then they played Arkansas the next week in
- 55:30Speaker 1: the Big shootout game and went on to win the
- 55:32Speaker 1: national title. So there are other games as well in there.
- 55:38Speaker 1: The Boise State, Oklahoma, Statue of Liberty play that they
- 55:43Speaker 1: did in the Bowl game, Appalachian State of Michigan, and
- 55:49Speaker 1: of course appleatchen stated upset Texas AM and m as well.
- 55:52Speaker 1: And then it said this, the sport can always frustrate us.
- 55:57Speaker 1: And when I first got down on this part, he
- 55:58Speaker 1: had not even mentioned the big shootout Texas Arkansas. Thought,
- 56:04Speaker 1: really it wouldn't be there. Well, it's in this category.
- 56:06Speaker 1: And here's why. As he mentions this category, the sport
- 56:12Speaker 1: can still always frustrate us. And he mentions it by
- 56:16Speaker 1: his close calls unsatisfying endings, presidential interference, without even getting
- 56:22Speaker 1: into all the ways that millionaire boosters and message board
- 56:25Speaker 1: conspiracy theorists at a steady doc and drama, all the
- 56:27Speaker 1: goings on, and don't even get us started on conference
- 56:30Speaker 1: realignment that sections a little further down. This sport can
- 56:33Speaker 1: drive us absolutely batty. He starts off with mentioning number two,
- 56:38Speaker 1: number one Michigan State Notre Dame. It was a ten
- 56:40Speaker 1: to ten tie and sixty six Notre Dame refused to
- 56:45Speaker 1: try to get down the field and win it.
- 56:47Speaker 2: They played it safe, and that.
- 56:51Speaker 1: Dan Jenkins, the great writer from Fort Worth and Sports
- 56:54Speaker 1: Illustrated Layer, wrote that Ara Percy and the head coach
- 56:57Speaker 1: of Notre Dame chose to tie one for the Gipper
- 57:00Speaker 1: because they would get the national title. Then he's got
- 57:05Speaker 1: Texas Arkansas listed now because he mentioned the Nebraska for
- 57:12Speaker 1: Oklahoma Game of.
- 57:13Speaker 2: The Century nineteen seventy one.
- 57:15Speaker 1: Well, what he mentions here is he says it's another
- 57:18Speaker 1: of the true Game of the Century moments. This game
- 57:20Speaker 1: was a true event, pushed to the end of the
- 57:23Speaker 1: regular season for TV purposes and attended by President Richard Nixon.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Texas scored fifteen to fourth quarter points to win a thriller.
- 57:31Speaker 1: But things got weird after the game when Nixon provided
- 57:34Speaker 1: the log worns with a plaque declaring them national champions,
- 57:38Speaker 1: even though A they still led to beat Notre Dame
- 57:40Speaker 1: in the Cotton Bowl and B Joe Paturner's PENNS Dave
- 57:43Speaker 1: was also unbeaten. As Paterna would say at a commencement
- 57:46Speaker 1: speech a few years later, I've wondered how President Nixon
- 57:49Speaker 1: could know so little about Watergate nineteen seventy three and
- 57:52Speaker 1: so much about college football in nineteen sixty nine. Well,
- 57:56Speaker 1: here's some answers to you for that. And Bill finally,
- 58:00Speaker 1: as good a writers as he doesn't mention these things
- 58:04Speaker 1: in the first place. He says, even though they still
- 58:07Speaker 1: the ballgame to play. Okay, UPI crowned its national champion
- 58:12Speaker 1: in those days before the ball games. I thought the
- 58:15Speaker 1: ballgame was a bonus, so they'd already done it. AP
- 58:20Speaker 1: did as well, and then changed it the next year,
- 58:23Speaker 1: which by the way, happened to be when Texas lost
- 58:27Speaker 1: to Notre Dame and the Cotton but left of the
- 58:28Speaker 1: nineteen seventy season when they were declared national champions going
- 58:32Speaker 1: into the ballgame by UPI still the coach's poll. But
- 58:35Speaker 1: when they lost to Notre Dame, Nebraska and Ohio State
- 58:41Speaker 1: was upset by Stanford. Then Nebraska got went from number
- 58:47Speaker 1: five to number one by beating LSU and the Orange Bowl,
- 58:49Speaker 1: so it did sort itself out the next year. In
- 58:51Speaker 1: those days, the national champ was crowned before the ballgame,
- 58:56Speaker 1: so Conley didn't mention that. The other thing he didn't
- 58:59Speaker 1: mention Penn State was invited to play Texas in the
- 59:02Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl.
- 59:03Speaker 2: They declined.
- 59:04Speaker 1: Really, they elected to go play Missouri in the Orange Bowl,
- 59:08Speaker 1: who they beat ten to three, so.
- 59:12Speaker 2: They were an Eastern independent. They did not play.
- 59:15Speaker 1: Toughest schedule was Texas and they had a chance to
- 59:18Speaker 1: play the Long Warns head up in the Cotton Bowl,
- 59:22Speaker 1: and declined, so that's when the old Bowl genius Jim
- 59:28Speaker 1: hass Brock managed to talk Notre Dame out of I
- 59:31Speaker 1: think it was a forty five year hiatus of not
- 59:33Speaker 1: playing in bowl games to come to Dallas.
- 59:35Speaker 2: And it was a hell of a game.
- 59:36Speaker 1: Joe Thaisman was playing quarterback for Notre Dame and they
- 59:38Speaker 1: almost beat Texas. Texas scored a touchdown with about under
- 59:41Speaker 1: two minutes to go to win the game twenty one
- 59:44Speaker 1: to seventeen. So there's some extenuating things you could take
- 59:49Speaker 1: a look at there that Conley does not mention.
- 59:50Speaker 2: But the article itself is very good.
- 59:52Speaker 1: It goes into made for television stuff and some other
- 59:57Speaker 1: things as well, and it's a good piece, even at
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: that particular part about Texas is a little bit incomplete.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: All Right, We have more coming up next here on
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: It was Jake's turn this time to come up with
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: someone on the Mondays.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: So we've got Midnight Trained in Memphis from Chris Stapleton,
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: another double m and it mentions the forty day counts
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: down to football season with.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: The long Horns. It could have been more perfect.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: Absolutely fits, no question about that so, yeah, that one
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: goes into it here on a Monday see how mention
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: when there's talking about those college football great games though
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: you Nebraska seventy one game, the late Johnny Rogers pump return.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Uh he was at coaching school a number of years
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: ago promotion. Uh.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: I got a picture with him autographed. Yeah, the great
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Johnny Rogers also mentioned the Alabama that the kick six
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: the field goal return.
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: Oh boy, yeah, and that was we had company over
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: at the Herman household.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Oh really for that one.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: And of course, uh De Herman died in the wool
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: Alabama fan because gup in Birmingham.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's right.
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: His dad went to Alabama.
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: He went to uh to law school there, and he
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: was devastated. And some of the company had had the
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: nerve to cheer, had the nerve on the kick six.
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: On the kick six, Now I get being wrapped up
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: in such an incredible play, was it?
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: What was it?
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: The late Rod Bramlett said something like they're not going
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: to keep all.
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: They're not going to keep them off the veield tonight.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: Yeah, said And he also had remembered the the other
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: one that Hail Mary Miracle gets Georgia, that Auburn had
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: had the prayer at Jordinaire. That's the one that one
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: the pass that should have been intercepted. The two defenders glances.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: Then boom and he gets in it. Yeah, that's mentioned
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: in that article as well.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: By the way, Texas was also mentioned in another category,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: and it was in the category of realignment. And in
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: that realignment category they mentioned the win over Nebraska in
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: the first ever Big Twelve Championship nineteen ninety six, the
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: thirty seven twenty seven win for Texas and said though
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: the SEC managed to have its kke a conference title
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: game and eat it too with ninety two Alabama still
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: winning the national title, the Big Twelve Championship game immediately
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: established a different sort of vibe. It would up in
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: its team's national title hopes. Was up with upsets in
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: ninety six. That was Texas Nebraska ninety eight. That was
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: A and M's one conference title when they when they
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: upset Kansas State, who could have played for the national
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: title two thousand and one. That's when Kansas State upset
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Oklahoma and two thousand and seven and nearly did so
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: in two thousand, two thousand and three, and two thousand
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: and nine as well, and the chaos began immediately when
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: a seven and five Texas team rode running back Priest
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Holmes and a stunning sixty one yard pass from James
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Brown the reserve tied end Derek Lues to pull off
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: an upset of two time defending national champion Nebraska. Texas
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: was actually seven and four going into that game and
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: wanted to get t eight to four and then lost
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl because they got
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: they got the nod for the Fiesta Bowl in that one.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: But that was, Yeah, that was a stunner that time
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: as well. So that was that was in the realignment era.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: In fact, the other thing was pretty interesting. You mentioned
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: that Houston on December second, nineteen ninety five, that was
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: the final day ever for Southwest Conference football. That day,
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: Texas won the final Southwest Conference championship by beating Texas
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: A and m ending the Aggies thirty one game home
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: winning streak at Kyle Field to beat him sixteen to six.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: But what what is mentioned here is Houston's win over
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Rice eighteen seventeen, which finished a little while after the
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Texas game. The Big twelve, the first truly new creation
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: of the realignment Wars would begin playing in nineteen ninety six,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: with all eight members of the Big Eight and half
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: of the remaining Southwest Conference twining together. But that left
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: the other half of the Southwest Conference to fend for itself,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: and the last official Southwest Conference game pitted Conference USA
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: bound Houston against a Rice team bracing for life in
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: the supersized New Whack. It was a thriller, at least
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: Houston scored fifteen unanswered points in the fourth quarter and
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Reis missed a thirty eight yard field goal with twelve
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: seconds left. So that happened that day as well so
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: some other great moments they were out of college football.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up hour number two on
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: thirteen Under the Zone, third and final hour of the
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: program here on sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: Craig Wade join by the producer Jake Carman. Glad to
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: have you with us and your contributions to the program
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: as well. By the way, the Rangers game we've been
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: updating you on is nearly overs two outs the night.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: The game is just now rolling up on two and
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: a half hours and the Rangers are up seven to
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: three on the Mariner.
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: It's about average now, but for a ten run game,
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: that feels fast.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Yeah, the Rangers were striking very fast in the game.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: It's seven to three in the top of the night.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Now the Mariners down and down to their final out
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: out and Jacob Latz, who is the Texas closer, is
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: out there. Now. Can I just.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: Pass along a grumpy old man shaking his fist at
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: the clouds observation I have. I have absolutely no problem
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: with nothing against what Major in for that matter, Minor
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: league teams do when they bring in their closer and
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: there's all sorts of pyrotechnics and lights and whistles and
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: horns and all that kind of So I got no
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: problem with any of that. If it's a lights out
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: type of moment, a one run game, a tie game,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: three two, Now, when you're up seven to two going
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: into the night, why and it's gone final? Now seven
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: to three was the final Lats gave up a run
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: in the ninth Rangers win at seven three.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Why are you playing all that stuff and it's coming
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: out you're about five runs.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: If he can't get if your closer can't get three
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: outs before they score five runs, you shouldn't be playing.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: That anybody but Craig.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: That's his entrance.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: Sure it is.
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: He gets this adrenaline going.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: Couldn't you have another entrance for like a five run
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: lead instead of instead of playing all of the global
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: thermonuclear war pyrotechnics threat.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: As you see Edwin Diaz.
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: Do you think they bring those trumpets out when he
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: comes into when the Mets are down one, I guess
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: he's a Dodger now.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: By the way, he's gonna be activated tomorrow. He's been
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: out since late April, so had have whatether they call
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: it loose bodies and his elbow removed, the scooball injury. Yeah,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: so they had that out. But he'll he'll be back tomorrow.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: Uh. But yeah, you know what the the timmy trumpet thing,
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: you know that that whole bit, there's a name for
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: that song.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: It's a one word name. It's something like Zorba or something.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: It's a it's a it's a one go narco.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: For folks who don't know give him, give them a
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: little dose of narco here, because starting tomorrow, Edwin Diaz
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: is supposed to come back and he'd be coming back
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: to this.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: So I.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: Don't even have a problem with that for any reliever
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: the musical entrance, but all are are all of the
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: pyrotechnics and all the other stuff necessary when you're up
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: by five runs. So Jacob Latz came out to they're
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: going crazy with all that stuff with his walkouts on whatever.
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: I had the volume off, so I didn't even know
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: what his walkout was.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: And the music doesn't even bother me, like I said,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: like you said, that's his walkout music. I'm okay with that.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: But do you have to cut all the lights off
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: in the stadium there and then do all all of
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: the explosivity and everything else.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: Do you have to do that?
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: It does be a little silly when he does.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: When he does that, he comes out to a mass
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: appeal by gangstar Jacob Blatz.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: Okay, I don't know that too.
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: I'm not sure I can. I got to find a
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: clean version before we play it. Oh is there a
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: difference between I can make sure thing's here? Okay, Okay, anyway,
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: it just went Final Rangers one, seven to three, and
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Jacob Blat said, not get a save. That's what I
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: that should be the dividing line. I said, five runs,
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: but no, no, no, non save.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: Situation.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: If you're not coming in the the game, why do
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: you have to have all of that? Why do you
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: have to have all that craziness, explicitty, wet dream kind
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: of stuff. Why do you have to have that when
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: you're coming out in a non save situation music.
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: I get superstition. One, give the fans what they paid for.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: Two because it's fun.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: Three I said, I said.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: It, grumpy old man, shave it. I'm fun police here.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: But it's it's more out of the I think, out
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: of the realm of this, that whole respecting the game
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: thing with baseball, But that went out a long time ago.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: So I understand that Kumar Rocker did well today for
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: the Rangers and he got to win for Texas in
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: that one.
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: So it's it's an m song. If you want to
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: come back with Jacob Latz's music, yeah.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, we'll do that. We'll do that. Meanwhile, So.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: I asked, you know what, what would be the hottest
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: song if you have a job, you made, a job
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: that you would have.
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: I was looking at things, said song. I was looking at.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: The hottest job you ever had, and one would imagine
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: probably be in the summertime, you know, it might be
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: working concessions, it might be working tool and die. It
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: might be where like I said, sand blasting rust off
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: the insides of industrial air conditioning units.
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: I'm thinking somebody out there was in a mascot suit
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: in the summer at some point.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that has to be the case.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: Our friend Randall, who did such an expert job when
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: I lost my first wife with his group at the Kabriels,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: texted and he said, I had three hot jobs as
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: a teen in the sixties when there were still afternoon newspapers. Yeah,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: remember those. I had the largest paper route, more than
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: six hundred to deliver by bike, TA called daily. Think
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: about that in the summertime you got a paper round,
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: you got to deliver more than six hundred newspapers.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: That's number one.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: Number two a job during college summers at a metal
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: extrusion fabricator.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: That just sounds hot.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: And then he adds and again this went into his
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: line of work. As you know, a crematory operator operates
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: at seventeen hundred degrees plus, so yeah, it gets pretty warm.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: There is that so hot that you have to wear
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: protective warm gear.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: One would imagine I would say, so, thank you Randall.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: I appreciate that that's hot. Yes, sure, it is absolutely okay.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: There was one other thing when you get to for
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: the break. If you were listening in the program earlier
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: in the two o'clock hour, we were talking about in
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: the inconceivable segment, what's going on with the cyclospariasis crisis,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: if you will, Because more and more cases are now
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: being linked to produce in specific lettuce. Taco Bell is
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: being sued by three different people for getting the cyclospora
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: not long after eating them after eating at Taco Bell.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: They're still trying to figure out how to keep this
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: thing under control, so to speak. Michigan has the largest
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: amount of cases right now.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: Now. One thing that is definite about.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: The cyclospariasis issue is that it causes extreme gastro intestinal discomfort.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: That's the way it was.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: I was watching one of the newscasts, and people know me,
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: know I record all the newscasts. I watched them all
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: every night of all the local affiliates, and uh, and
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: I watched a lot of the six o'clock evening ones.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: And I was watching one of the ones on KXN
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: and Daniel Marine, who is doing the evening he mentioned
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: about and I think the words he used were bowel discomfort,
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: and he had this really pained look on his face
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: when he was talking about it, because just saying those
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: words can can make it all the more discomforting. But
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: the phrase that has come up more than any other
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: with regard to what the symptoms and ultimately the full on,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: full blast effect of getting the parasite that causes the
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: cyclist ariasis problem is the phrase explosive diarrhea. Now that's
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: a phrase we try to stay away from normally, you know.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: But the comedian Josh Johnson had his own take on
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: how that phrase, that phrase actually not only is instrumental
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: in describing the discomfort and the problem, but in a
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: manner of speaking, says Josh, it kind of brings the
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: nation together.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Is gonna kill us?
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: The produce is gonna kill us.
- 1:15:47Speaker 5: Is never a recall on the candy, the candy, there's
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: never a.
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: Recall on light the double blastic ushers.
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: It never recalled the ultimate chuckle chuckles, like.
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: No, no, this is the produce right now that is
- 1:16:10Speaker 5: tearing us up.
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: It's business is bad.
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: It's so bad that the news, the news, you know,
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: the news where you get your news, the news came
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: out and said, hey, everybody over here eating well everybody
- 1:16:30Speaker 5: here eating right in your fruits and vegetables, watch out
- 1:16:33Speaker 5: because there's a parasite and it gives you and I.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: Quote, explosive diarrhea.
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: They didn't say upset stomach, they didn't say bowel issues.
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: They went straight top of.
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: The list, top number one. They didn't even do the
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: thing that our drug commercials do at the end where
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: they're like, they said, loud and proud, explosive diarrhea.
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: And when I say, they actually mean all of them,
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: all of them, All of them said it. Fox News, ABC, CBS,
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: everybody said it. One Nation News, like a fight America
- 1:17:30Speaker 5: now like everybody said it explosive diarrhea.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: They all said it.
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: The same people who.
- 1:17:37Speaker 5: Can't agree are the results of the twenty twenty election.
- 1:17:41Speaker 6: All said explosive diarrhea.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: Do you know how bad it must be?
- 1:17:50Speaker 6: Do you how bad it must be for everyone to
- 1:17:52Speaker 6: buy partisan explosive.
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: I didn't think this would be with braus together.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: I really didn't.
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: I thought, that's just how.
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: Serious this is.
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: It doesn't matter where you are.
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: In the in like the spectrum or the constellation of
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: political opinion, It doesn't matter if you're progressive or conservative
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: or liberal or al right, you might even be a Nazi.
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: Everybody's like, that's explosive diarrheam, yeah, it brings the nation together, right,
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: oh boy, nothing like the common Enemy of What did
- 1:18:32Speaker 6: he say explosive?
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: Yeah exactly.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: But he did kind of hit the nail on the
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: head with that, So be careful out there. And I'm
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: not telling anybody to swear off Taco Bell, because you know,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: Taco Bell, they were getting rid of a lot of
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: their lettuce, you.
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: Know, at least starting off. And that's why.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: That's why in his earlier thing that we played, he
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: was said, oh no, you get rid of the lettuce?
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: How am I supposed to get my greens? People aren't
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: going to Taco Bell for that. But you know, and
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: I'm not telling anybody swear. I'm just saying, just be
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: mindful that thing. Lynd and I had salads last night.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: We were like, yo, okay.
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: I wish the audience could see your eyes right.
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: Now, Okatie, I guess.
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: Craig's eyes are darting around like he's calling a basketball game.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: I'm telling you, speaking of basketball, We've got some Texas
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: basketball news to share.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: With you.
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: That's coming up next here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: under the Zone.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: In the IR Radio app.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: So Jake found a clean version from the song this
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: offering by Gang Star what's it called again?
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: Mass Appeal?
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: Mass Appeal here on a Monday and some songs starting
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: with the letter in here on thirteen hundred. Speaking of starting,
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: the Southeastern Conference today announced its conference basketball schedule, home
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: and away schedules for all of its members schools, and
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: the Longhorns will start. Since I said we were speaking
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: of starting starting conference play at home on January second,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: their eighteen game schedule, and they're going to.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: Start with Florida.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: It will finish as it did a year ago the
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: regular season in College Station at Texas A and m SO.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: For the second season in a row, Texas will open
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: conference play at home and then they'll close it in
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: College Station at Texas A and m SO. The SEC
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: releasing the conference schedule now. They're midweek games that are
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: going to be either Tuesday or Wednesday, and those have
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: yet to be determined on those as well as the
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: television time. But you know what's in a lot of
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: those cases, you know, it's the midweek games are either
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: going to be Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday, so the
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: midweek games will include home conference games at Moody Center
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: against some following opponents. Texas will play Florida. That's on Saturday,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: January second, that's at Moody Center. Then either Tuesday or Wednesday,
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: January fifth or sixth, they'll be in Athens to play Georgia.
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: They played at Georgia on.
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: Saturday last year and then played him at a home
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: in a midweek It was odd. Georgia was that weird,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: odd configure team that they played twice last year other
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: than traditional rivals this year.
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: I mean Florida.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's it's it's strange how that works. But
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: I remember the NFL did that for a while.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: They had teams, there were teams that there were teams
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: that NFL teams played that were not in their division
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: but were in their conference, and they played them home
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: and home during the year. They did that for a
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: while with an unbalanced schedule, until they got to thirty
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: two teams. Okay, So they opened conference play on Saturday,
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: January second at home against Florida. Then they're at Georgia
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: on either Tuesday or Wednesday, the fifth or sixth, then
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: they were at home on the no Then on the
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: ninth they're at Ole Miss. So they go back to
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: back road games, follow by back to back home games.
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: A Tuesday or Wednesday, January twelfth or thirteenth at home
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: against Auburn. Then they play Oklahoma at home on Saturday
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: the sixteenth. That's followed by Tuesday or Wednesday game in
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: Baton Rouge against LSU. Then on Saturday, January twenty thirday
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: of Arkansas home. It's followed by a midweek game at
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: South Carolina either the twenty six or twenty seventh. They
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: then play Kentucky at home on Saturday, January thirty two
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: years ago when they beat Kentucky at home. That was
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: a Saturday night game. A lot of excitement about that
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: in Texas won that game a couple of years ago.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: Then they had that return game we mentioned Florida home
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: and home. They had a return game on Saturday February
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: sixth in Gainesville against Florida, followed by a Tuesday or
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: Wednesday game at home against Alabama. Then on Saturday, February
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: thirteenth playing at Vanderbilt. So they go to Nashville on
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: that back at home on Tuesday or Wednesday to play
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: Texas A and M. They play Texas A and M
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: twice in a three week time span, home and home.
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: They don't play them until February sixteenth or seventeenth. Then
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: they have the return game at Oklahoma that's a traditional
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: rival game on Saturday the twentieth. They go to Startville
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: to play a midweek game February twenty third to twenty
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: four at Mississippi State at the hump at the hump
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: A Humphrey Coliseum. They'll be at home to face Tennessee.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: Rick Barnes and company coming to town on Saturday, February
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: twenty seventh, their final home game. Their senior night game
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: will be against Missouri on March second or third, and
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: then they will conclude the regular season in College Station
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: for the second straight year on Saturday at Texas A
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: and M. I remember that vividly because that was the
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: weekend that long. WRN Baseball was in Houston, playing at
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: Dykin Park, and I'd gone over to broadcast the Friday
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: baseball game there as they were playing in that Classic
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: and they beat Coastal Carolina on Friday night, and after
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: the game, I drove up to College station.
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: It's only about you know whatever, ninety miles, hundred.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: Miles drove up there after the game, stayed with the
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: team that night, the basketball team that night in College Station.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: Friday night, then.
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: Saturday did the basketball game Texas one. I got in
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: the car and raced back down to Houston and got
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: there in time to broadcast the baseball game against Baylor
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: and then the Sunday baseball game against Ohio State. But anyway,
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: that was that was wrapped around the basketball game in
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: College Station against Texas A and M. So they'll play
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: Texas A and M for a second strigger. And we
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: also know that in the non conference schedule, they it
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: was announced last week that they will have a game
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: on Sunday, November fifteenth against Baylor in San Antonio. That'll
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: be at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Sunday,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: November fifteenth, so we know that that game is going
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: to be there. They're playing in San Diego, as we know,
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: in the tournament over Thanksgiving weekend when they'll play Georgetown
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: and then I think either Saint Mary's or UCLA.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: So there's that.
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: They've had a couple of the acc SEC Challenge game
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: will be in Louisville. In fact, they'll be back to
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: back nights against Louisville, the men there on Wednesday night
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: in December and the women at home against Louisville on Thursday.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: So that's more and more of the schedule is being released,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: but it hasn't all been finalized yet because they don't
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: have the they don't have the all of the non
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: conference games completely finished up. It's pretty close to having
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: everything in terms of the dates, and now they've got
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: the dates pretty much set on the conference games. Like
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: we said, the midweek games are either going to be
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: Tuesday or Wednesday. And if you're wondering why, why is
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: that either Tuesday or Wednesday, The answer is quite simple.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: It's the four letter network.
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: ESPN will decide which games it wants to do, like
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: as part of its Super Tuesday and all that on Tuesday,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: and then the rest of the games will either be
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: on ESPN or on one of the platforms like on
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: ESPN Plus or something like that on Wednesday, or ESPNU
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: or you know, ESPN two on that. So there'll be
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: some games like that that'll that'll be televised or as
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: they would say in this case, SEC Network plus that's
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: how it would be. It would be SEC Network Plus
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: on those games that go on SEC Network and then
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: the other additional ones on SEC Network Plus. So that
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: gets you a little bit up to date on the mets.
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: We have not seen the women's schedule yet. The SEC
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: has yet to announce what, what time, the what are
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: the dates for the women's SEC the conference games? We
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: know this by and large, in large measure, the women's
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: games in conference play, just like the men's, are either
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: Tuesday or Wednesday, and then on Saturday. There's no other
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: odd games. There's no big Monday. That's a Big twelve thing.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: Obviously in the Big East. It's either Tuesday or Wednesday
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: is your midweek game, and then you play Saturday. That's
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: the men the women largely, not entirely, but largely Thursdays
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: and Sundays is when the women's schedule is. And hopefully
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: we'll learn that coming up in the not too distant future,
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: the women's schedule as well. So that's that should let
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: us know. I think, you know, we don't which games
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: will overlap with the men, which ones will be close.
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: I do know this.
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: I think there's gonna be a non conference double header
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: if you will. It's kind of a day night doubleheader
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: coming up in December the men, and this has already
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: been announced. They're going to play Memphis at home on Wednesday,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: December sixteenth. I think the women have their forty acres
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: field trip game that day. That's where they play the
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: game with all the elementary and middle school kids that
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: come in. It's about five thousand of them in Moody Center,
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: and it's like an eleven am tip off. As I
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: like to call it, the Annual screen Fest because the kids,
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: you know, they scream at, you know, about any basket
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: that goes through, even if it's the other team doing it.
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: They get all excited. It's a lot of fun. The
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: players say they really enjoy it.
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: They enjoy all that cacophony of noise that comes about
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: that happens like that. All right, we have more coming up.
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: We'll continue here on this Monday on Sports Radio AM
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone in the IR radio app One
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: of the more melodic, if lesser known and lesser celebrated
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: tunes off the iconic and epic Band on the Run
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: album by Paul McCartney at Wigs Mamonia, which is actually
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: and They didn't know this until I read the biography
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: about the band Wings, not Beatles stuff, just wink. Mamonia
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: was the name of a hotel in Morocco where they
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: stayed when they were recording an album not Not Banned
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: on the Run. They did that in Legos, Nigeria, and
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: almost got killed when they were there. That Paul and
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: Lindy got mugged at night point on them. So that's
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: another story. Is there a song about that?
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: But the Mamonia Hotel was just absolutely colossal and beautiful
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: and uh, the way the breezes would come in and said,
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: apparently that's also where Winston Churchill stayed when they had
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: the Tripac conference between Franklin Delan and Roosevelt President Roosevelt
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: UH and Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin during World War
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: Two when they got together.
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: But that was he stayed at the Malmonia Hotel here and.
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: So he said, hey, that'll make a good hook.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and Paul McCartney and Wings singing about that. Uh
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: in that some NFL notes for you. Uh, there's there's
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: been quite a bit of uh speculation, I guess. Is
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: the way to describe it as to whether Aaron Donald
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: might return to the NFL, and he retired to years
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: ago March twenty four after ten NFL seasons, but when
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: the Rams traded for Miles Garrett, then he got excited
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: about the possibility playing alongside Garrett, the defensive player of
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: the Year, and so he's been working out and going through, apparently,
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: according to head coach Sean McVay, a very strict, regimented
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: process to decide whether he wants to unretire this season.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: And McVeigh said, if he decides he wants to play,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: we're going to try to be able to make that happen.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: He said, for those of you know, for those of
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: you guys that do no erran, he's very diligent. Anything
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: he does he does all in. And so he's going
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: through a very strict, regimented process that was similar to
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: what he did when he played, he said. He McVeigh
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: said he genuinely does not know what Donald will decide,
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: but he said, if he feels good, then you guys
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: know he's going to be ready to work. We'll see
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: all his body is responding to some of the training
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: and the way that he puts himself through the pace
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: is to know what it looks like and feels like
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: to be ready to take on the rigors of an
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: NFL season.
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: Yeah, he said, but it is his decision.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: And he said, I'm not going to sit there and
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: act like I'm not excited about the possibility of this.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: I didn't think this would ever be something, he said.
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: But he's earned the right to be able to do
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: this on his own terms. So the reason I bringing
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: this up, there's some NFL notes here. Training camps are
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: opening this week. In fact, the Chiefs opened yesterday and
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: there will be others including the Cowboys headed to Oxtard, California.
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: And in the coming weeks we'll.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: Visit with my friends, the radio voices of the Dallas Cowboys,
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: both Bradsham and Babeloffenberg. In coming weeks, we'll visit with
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: them and get their thoughts on that. Also, my colleague
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: Isaiah Standback, who works a lot of high school football
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: with me. I think he's part of the PAC twelve
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: television crew this year. And Isaiah, of course they played
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: at Washington, does a lot of the Cowboys programs during
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: the course of the season, which, by the way, they'll
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: take on a new look this year. Kyle Yeomans leaving
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: the Cowboys to be the new radio play by play
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: voice of the Baltimore Ravens. So congratulations to Kyle Yeomans,
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: young and upcoming broadcast star and getting an opportunity and
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: another one of us so to speak out of the
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: North Texas broadcast program up there, the sports broadcasting curriculum
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: up there that has produced a lot of outstanding broadcast
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: or even more follow will play by play voice of
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: the Mavericks on television. Several different guys who have done
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: it over the years, and Kyle Yeomans has d it there.
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: But anyway, that's that's one of the training camp notes
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: or pre training camp notes that's coming up. Another one
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: is that Jake's team, the Washington Commanders, have fired their
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: tight end coach Ben Steele following a DWI charge. It
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: happened back in June. He was charged with a DWI
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: after he was observed to change course after signal. He
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: was also charged with obstruction and resisting without force. According
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: to court documents, Steele refused a blood and bread test.
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: He was released on his own recognizance on that, but
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: he's been fired two days before training camp begins in Ashburne, Virginia,
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: more than a month after arrested for the DWI charge.
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: And he'd already been on leave for this.
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: It happened a while ago, and I think Wes Welker
- 1:35:47Speaker 3: was stepping in and coaching the tight end. So nothing
- 1:35:49Speaker 3: changes immediately for the team in that regard, but it's
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: somebody that was in that position a couple of seasons ago,
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: and yeah, they're gonna probably be scrambling and bring something
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: in at that position. It's a new look tight end
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: room for the commanders as well this year with Chikakonguo
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: coming in.
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: Yep, and a weird story out of Cleveland. If it
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: were just plain and simple that something showed up on
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: social media, you can make your own judgments about this.
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: But here's the weird thing. Jerry Judy, the Browns wide receiver,
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: very talented guy. He's been off and on several of
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: my fantasy rosters over the past few years, and he's
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: with Denver. He apparently is pushing back against a viral
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: video in which he appears to name his preference on
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: who he believes should be named the team starting quarterback.
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: And of course, right now it's up between Deshaun Watson
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: and Shade or Sanders. Watson is, of course, coming off
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: the surgery of last year, underwent a second surgery in
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: January twenty twenty five to repair another rupture of that
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: right achilles that kept him out all of twenty twenty five.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: Sanders started seven games as a rookie last year. He
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: is entering his second season. Todd Monkin, the new head coach,
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: has complimented both quarterbacks in the off season program, saying
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: that Sanders has really come a long way and that
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: Watson's athleticism shows up.
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: So you say, okay, so Jerry Judy has a preference.
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: Well, when there are things like this, quite often ol
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: roads lead back to TikTok.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: And here's what happened. There's a TikTok video where.
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: Judy flashes four fingers on a live stream. So if
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: you're reading between the lines, you would say, okay, he
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: wants DeShawn Watson to get the job. Watson were's number four.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: Judy war number four in colin Yes, but he doesn't
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: make a reference to the fact that he wore four
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: in college.
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: No, I know.
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: He appears to show for however, and this is where
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: it gets weird. The video appears to have been edited.
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: There's a skip in the clip when Judy shows his
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: fingers and when the question is is shown. And so
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: Judy yesterday on X posted this. He said, y'all cut
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: the clip perfectly for that narrative. He added he is
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: not going the weigh.
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: In on the decision that Todd Munkin will be making
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: when the two Watson and Sanders compete for the starting job.
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: His quote was, I don't speak on decisions that aren't
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: mine to make. I support my teammates, brothers. I do
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: my job, and I control what I can control. This
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: was another post with the X.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: Let's stop creating narratives that aren't there for likes and clicks.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: I bet this won't go viral because it's too positive
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: and real for y'all.
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: So this is totally edited. This is obvious, so you're
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: looking at it. Yeah, and there's a you can even
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: tell along the boar of the original video where the
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: skip comes in and the part where the question is
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: asked is after he puts up the four fingers.
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: So this is a hoax.
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: Yeah, So that's why Jerry Judy wanted to know that.
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: He's said I did not do that in the context
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: and the framing in which it appears.
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: Somebody else said, well four plus four is eight, so
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: he obviously wants Dylan Gabriel.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: Sure that's the answer, Dylan Gabriel. There you go.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: So anyway, it was it was a strange story, and
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: again another social media thing that that that comes up
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: off of that. And then finally one other weird deal.
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: Hear what happened to Kyle Shanahan. Oh yeah, miners coach. Yeah,
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: he's continuing to recover from injuries, including a concussion suffered
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: in a car wreck a couple of weeks ago, and
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: Brock perty saying hey, he's our guy, We're okay, we're
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: all together, and all this kind of stuff.
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: It was a it was a weird deal.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: Involved in the the According to the players, the news
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: came out kind of in a slow trickle. They started
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: finding out first of all from his wife, Mandy, who
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: reached out to like Brock Purty and George Kittle and
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: Fred Warner, the team leaders there. So they all said
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: their first reaction was disbelief about the accident, and uh,
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: it was. It was it was a pretty significant car
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: wreck that that he injured him and he's still recovering
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: from the injuries on that, but they say he's going
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: to be okay, and so he's kind of been watching
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: practice from a distance.
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: program on thirteen under the Zone.
