- 0:18Speaker 1: Day.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I'm Kennannie Stevens, Brian Sexton, and John Osier with me
- 0:21Speaker 2: this morning.
- 0:21Speaker 1: And as I mentioned, it's a victory Monday.
- 0:23Speaker 2: So it's always been here at jag XAM after the
- 0:25Speaker 2: Jaguars come off a win an absolute rock fight with
- 0:28Speaker 2: the Texans yesterday, but Jaguars coming out on top. Let's
- 0:31Speaker 2: go through our big things, brought to you by g
- 0:33Speaker 2: e h A Government and Ployee Health Association.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Big thing number one is finding a way.
- 0:38Speaker 2: It was not pretty, was not pretty at all, but
- 0:41Speaker 2: the Jaguars found a way to win.
- 0:42Speaker 3: That game means a lot. It means a lot.
- 0:46Speaker 4: I don't think it's a secret that we don't like
- 0:47Speaker 4: each other, so there's a fun game for us and
- 0:51Speaker 4: to find a way to do it. Like I said,
- 0:52Speaker 4: we're gonna see him again. So that's all I really
- 0:54Speaker 4: have to say right now. But it felt good, as
- 0:57Speaker 4: you guys can tell.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Brian that smiles says a lot.
- 1:02Speaker 2: It's always good to get a win, but it's definitely
- 1:04Speaker 2: always good to get a win against the Texans.
- 1:06Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, yesterday Kyle Fred Taylor and I dubbed
- 1:09Speaker 5: this the Redeemed team because.
- 1:10Speaker 3: That was what it was yesterday.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:11Speaker 5: I mean Tyson Campbell gave up the long touchdown and
- 1:14Speaker 5: he redeemed himself by forcing the fumble, and then he
- 1:16Speaker 5: made a really big play on Nico Collins on the
- 1:19Speaker 5: Texans Final Series. Brian Thomas Junior came in searching for
- 1:22Speaker 5: some sort of redemption after last week, and he made
- 1:25Speaker 5: a huge play when the game counted. Trevor Lawrence through
- 1:28Speaker 5: the interception of the fourth quarter. They sat at the
- 1:29Speaker 5: game time touchdown and he came through with a big
- 1:31Speaker 5: scramble on third down at six and even even the
- 1:35Speaker 5: play to Brian Thomas Junior.
- 1:37Speaker 3: So I mean, just just go with it.
- 1:39Speaker 5: I mean, they were redeemed team yesterday and they've got
- 1:42Speaker 5: big smiles on their face. Between redemption and resilience, which
- 1:45Speaker 5: are two words that described this team, yesterday was a
- 1:49Speaker 5: really big win for them.
- 1:50Speaker 6: Yeah, I think and Ky you said that it's all
- 1:53Speaker 6: Trevor had to say. It wasn't all he had to say.
- 1:55Speaker 6: He was better later when he said, look, we're not
- 1:57Speaker 6: going to be bullied, and I thought that was one
- 2:01Speaker 6: of the coolest, most revealing podium appearances the Trevors had
- 2:06Speaker 6: after a game. The smile. Look, I don't know if
- 2:10Speaker 6: it was all about last December and all that. I
- 2:12Speaker 6: don't know how, I don't know. I'm not smart enough
- 2:15Speaker 6: to know what percentage it was for Trevor or if
- 2:17Speaker 6: it was just the fact that the Texans were bullies
- 2:18Speaker 6: or the fact that they got a big win. I
- 2:21Speaker 6: got complaints, KYI complaints last night about the win. Like
- 2:26Speaker 6: we've won so much around here that you can complain
- 2:29Speaker 6: about it. They beat the Texans and they're two and one.
- 2:33Speaker 6: Yesterday was a really good day for the Jaguars no
- 2:35Speaker 6: matter how it looked on the field.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I love it.
- 2:37Speaker 6: I love the points.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I like complaints after a win.
- 2:40Speaker 2: It's a lot funnier to me that way around than
- 2:42Speaker 2: it is when they lose. So let's go to our
- 2:44Speaker 2: second big thing, which is trust factor. We talked a
- 2:46Speaker 2: ton about the trust between the coach and the quarterback,
- 2:49Speaker 2: the quarterback and the wide receiver, and things were not
- 2:51Speaker 2: going their way for most of that game, but they
- 2:53Speaker 2: had that trust factor late in the fourth quarter when
- 2:56Speaker 2: they needed it.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Coach Ton talked about it.
- 3:00Speaker 7: Yeah, he was frustrated, We're all frustrated on the sidelines
- 3:02Speaker 7: and communicating, But there really was none of this at all.
- 3:07Speaker 7: It was just accountability let's just go play the next play.
- 3:11Speaker 7: And then in a critical moment, that play to bt
- 3:14Speaker 7: was all Trevor in terms of the can like that
- 3:16Speaker 7: was a run play that they had saw blitz on
- 3:19Speaker 7: zero blitz. He gets out of the play we had
- 3:23Speaker 7: a run on. He gets out of it, fixes the protection,
- 3:26Speaker 7: picks it up, and then we execute the kind of
- 3:30Speaker 7: skinny that we had in there and BT comes ripping
- 3:32Speaker 7: in the window. He delivers it on time. I mean, yeah,
- 3:36Speaker 7: it was a very frustrating outing in a lot of ways, man,
- 3:39Speaker 7: But I'm hoping and we're hopeful that a moment like
- 3:43Speaker 7: this can maybe do this for us and help us
- 3:47Speaker 7: go to the next level in terms of understanding truly
- 3:50Speaker 7: what it takes to throw and catch at a consistent level.
- 3:55Speaker 2: John looking at that things were not going well for
- 3:57Speaker 2: the team, but when they needed to make those decisions
- 3:59Speaker 2: late and come back and rally, they did that having
- 4:02Speaker 2: that trust factor. Cohen calling out Trevor saying he can
- 4:05Speaker 2: that play. He made that play to BTJ that set
- 4:07Speaker 2: up the go ahead touchdown.
- 4:09Speaker 1: It's nice to.
- 4:09Speaker 2: See that when things are going awry, they don't let
- 4:12Speaker 2: that affect what the next play is going to be.
- 4:14Speaker 6: Yeah, maybe I'll just look at this thing differently, because again,
- 4:18Speaker 6: all the complaints the NFL in September, and Brian, you've
- 4:23Speaker 6: seen this a million times.
- 4:24Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:25Speaker 6: It is about getting through the process of figuring out
- 4:29Speaker 6: who you are and iron out the kinks. There's not
- 4:30Speaker 6: eight week training camps anymore. And how many times with
- 4:33Speaker 6: this franchise have we seen them lose a couple of
- 4:36Speaker 6: games like that early and all of a sudden be
- 4:38Speaker 6: one and four and staring at a mountain you can't
- 4:40Speaker 6: climb when you finally do get it going at two
- 4:44Speaker 6: and one. I thought the fact that Trevor checked out
- 4:46Speaker 6: of the play when I was covering the Colts. Brian,
- 4:49Speaker 6: how many times did they come in here and barely
- 4:51Speaker 6: squeak out a win where you thought their offense played bad,
- 4:55Speaker 6: and all of a sudden they're leaving here with a
- 4:57Speaker 6: ten to three win or a seventeen to ten win.
- 4:59Speaker 6: They won the game, and in the big moment, Brian
- 5:02Speaker 6: Thomas Junior and Terror Lawrence came up with a big play.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Great players in this league struggle in this league struggles
- 5:10Speaker 6: the good ones and the winning ones come up with
- 5:12Speaker 6: a way to win in the key moments. I'm wreking
- 5:16Speaker 6: mystic after that game, Brian than I was before.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Two things. First of all, John, you just talked about
- 5:21Speaker 3: a divisional game.
- 5:21Speaker 5: I mean, the teams know each other so well, and Kay,
- 5:24Speaker 5: the animosity that existed because of Al Shaier's hit last year,
- 5:29Speaker 5: that kind of the animosity exists all over the league
- 5:31Speaker 5: between various teams, right, go look at the Steelers and
- 5:34Speaker 5: the Ravens. I mean there's all sorts of those examples.
- 5:38Speaker 5: And so the Texans came in here knowing the Jaguars
- 5:41Speaker 5: were still unhappy about it, and they were zero and two,
- 5:43Speaker 5: and they were gonna come in and try to be
- 5:45Speaker 5: the bully and the Jaguars were not going to have
- 5:47Speaker 5: any of it. My eyes were glazed over watching that offense.
- 5:51Speaker 5: At one point I was banging my head like everyone else.
- 5:54Speaker 5: And then I heard Liam afterwards talk about that that
- 5:57Speaker 5: throw to Brian Thomas, and all of a sudden, John,
- 6:00Speaker 5: you talk about optimism. I'm optimistic because the quarterback to
- 6:03Speaker 5: recognize what they were facing, to change the protection that
- 6:07Speaker 5: everybody on the play understood what was happening again, new scheme,
- 6:12Speaker 5: new coach, right, and all of a sudden, you got
- 6:14Speaker 5: to have everybody dialed in with the pressure on and
- 6:18Speaker 5: they delivered that play. That one play has me optimistic
- 6:22Speaker 5: about where this offense is headed.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 6:25Speaker 2: We talked a little bit about things that went wrong.
- 6:26Speaker 2: How about things that went right? Our final big thing,
- 6:28Speaker 2: give me that the takeaways for this team. The defense
- 6:31Speaker 2: played out of their mind yesterday. Jordan lewis a huge
- 6:35Speaker 2: part of that. To these takeaways and getting their hands
- 6:37Speaker 2: on the ball just part of their identity.
- 6:40Speaker 8: That's our Carly Kark, go out there and take the
- 6:42Speaker 8: ball away. We've been talking about that since LTA, So
- 6:45Speaker 8: we just want to go out there and of course
- 6:46Speaker 8: turnovers and make it a bad day for the offense
- 6:49Speaker 8: and you know those quarterbacks that we're facing, so we've
- 6:51Speaker 8: been doing a pretty good job of that.
- 6:52Speaker 3: You have to stay on the screws and.
- 6:53Speaker 1: We know to keep the bearings ran.
- 6:56Speaker 2: It's truly hard to comprehend that this team in three
- 6:59Speaker 2: weeks has already met their takeaway total from last year
- 7:03Speaker 2: as a whole. And that's probably more of an indictment
- 7:05Speaker 2: on the defense from last year. But the point is
- 7:07Speaker 2: having this many bunches of turnovers, takeaways, forced interceptions, it's
- 7:13Speaker 2: changed the mark of this team, and when you have
- 7:16Speaker 2: a bad offensive day and you have three takeaways, that's
- 7:19Speaker 2: how you win a game.
- 7:20Speaker 5: I go back to a preseason production meeting that Liam
- 7:23Speaker 5: had with Bucky Brooks and I before the Steelers game,
- 7:25Speaker 5: and we were talking about various things, and he stopped
- 7:27Speaker 5: us and said, talk about takeaways, because we're not doing
- 7:30Speaker 5: anything with only eight takeaways this year. That has to change.
- 7:33Speaker 5: And through three weeks, they lead the league with nine takeaways.
- 7:36Speaker 5: They lead the NFL with seven interceptions. It's remarkable what
- 7:41Speaker 5: they've done. And for the first time in franchise history, John,
- 7:44Speaker 5: they have three games back to back to back with
- 7:48Speaker 5: three turnovers in each game, and that all three of
- 7:51Speaker 5: them came in the fourth quarter when the game was
- 7:53Speaker 5: decided Yesterday is even better.
- 7:55Speaker 6: Yeah, some of this is game circumstance too. News flash.
- 7:59Speaker 6: The Jayward didn't lead very much last year. I think
- 8:02Speaker 6: they've trailed for eighteen seconds this year. If I'm doing
- 8:05Speaker 6: the math right, When you're leading and when you are
- 8:09Speaker 6: playing in control of the game, you put pressure on
- 8:13Speaker 6: the other team to do things, and they want to
- 8:16Speaker 6: do The Texans were trying to get back in that
- 8:17Speaker 6: game on Sunday and late through the pick. So that's
- 8:24Speaker 6: not taking anything away from the defense. It's making the
- 8:26Speaker 6: point that look, no matter what the offense does on
- 8:30Speaker 6: a particular day or the defense doesn't a particular day,
- 8:32Speaker 6: this team is fighting, scrapping, they're playing smart. The defense
- 8:38Speaker 6: I feel like believes in Campanally, so I three a
- 8:44Speaker 6: game is not sustainable. I mean it would be a record,
- 8:46Speaker 6: it would be unbelieve it. Maybe it is, but it's
- 8:49Speaker 6: going to fight and scrap, like the team that's gotten
- 8:52Speaker 6: nine turnovers so far that boades really well, this is
- 8:56Speaker 6: I think this is going to get interesting.
- 8:57Speaker 3: They trailed for eighteen seconds this year and you're getting planes.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Fans, fans, fans, got a fan here now, we gotta
- 9:06Speaker 2: we gotta meet the bar. Now say with this here
- 9:08Speaker 2: on jag XAM, we're gonna go over the highlights for
- 9:09Speaker 2: you from a win yesterday.
- 9:10Speaker 6: That's what.
- 9:22Speaker 3: We're not gonna get bullied. You know.
- 9:23Speaker 4: It's a team that, uh, that's that's what I feel
- 9:26Speaker 4: like they want to do and not saying that's wrong,
- 9:28Speaker 4: but that's their.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Mindset and it's not going to happen to this team.
- 9:31Speaker 3: So it was it was fun to be able to.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Punch back and stand up in those moments where it's like,
- 9:37Speaker 4: all right, you want to throw that punch, like we're here.
- 9:39Speaker 1: You know, did you hear from you quarterback Cover Lawrence?
- 9:43Speaker 2: They're not gonna get bully, get their first Divisional win
- 9:45Speaker 2: of the year and send the Texans back to Houston
- 9:47Speaker 2: zero to three. John, It was nice to hear it from,
- 9:50Speaker 2: you know, a leader on your team saying, hey, this
- 9:52Speaker 2: has been a bully in the division.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Not this year.
- 9:54Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean again, I thought it was the most
- 9:58Speaker 6: confident Bowl statement we've heard from him after a game.
- 10:03Speaker 6: I don't think it should be lost either that they
- 10:06Speaker 6: did everything went wrong. They drove a three yards on
- 10:09Speaker 6: seven plays at the end of the game to win
- 10:11Speaker 6: the game, and he made a couple of big plays
- 10:15Speaker 6: on those drives. Also, the Texans were zero to two
- 10:22Speaker 6: coming in. I believe desperate team syndrome in the NFL
- 10:26Speaker 6: is real. It's hard to knock it because you're sort
- 10:29Speaker 6: of delivering a knockout punch. Maybe the Texans come back
- 10:31Speaker 6: in this, but you feel like it's a knockout punch.
- 10:34Speaker 6: It's hard to knock out. And they did it, and
- 10:38Speaker 6: for those reasons, I thought it was a great NFL win.
- 10:41Speaker 6: No matter how it looked, if you don't win that
- 10:42Speaker 6: game yesterday, it's still the Texans Division.
- 10:45Speaker 3: It just is.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Whether they win it or not, they're over you and
- 10:49Speaker 5: they hold that over you. And they've got eight straight
- 10:51Speaker 5: wins here. Yesterday was so important because the message was
- 10:53Speaker 5: beyond bullying. It was you're done owning us in our
- 10:58Speaker 5: own house. Sure we are ready, and the message that
- 11:01Speaker 5: sounds very good Texans team right now. They don't run
- 11:04Speaker 5: the ball all over that well. Their offensive line is
- 11:06Speaker 5: the shambles. If they come in and beat you when
- 11:08Speaker 5: they're not very good, it's a real negative feeling as
- 11:11Speaker 5: you walk off the field. So that was a huge
- 11:13Speaker 5: win for a.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Lot of reasons, very telling for sure.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Let's get into some of the highlights.
- 11:17Speaker 2: We'll start out with that first scoring drive for the Jaguars,
- 11:20Speaker 2: because there wasn't a ton of scoring early on, but
- 11:22Speaker 2: they did get a touchdown early and saw some key
- 11:26Speaker 2: players we've been talking about on offense get involved in that.
- 11:30Speaker 2: So first off, it was gonna be Brent's train, I
- 11:32Speaker 2: think here with the big first down, and he's just
- 11:34Speaker 2: been so I mean, we talk about him all the time,
- 11:36Speaker 2: right like he's one of our favorite players, but to
- 11:38Speaker 2: see Brenton Strange involved and then Parker Washington, who didn't
- 11:41Speaker 2: have a great day, but good catch here to set
- 11:44Speaker 2: up the touchdown for Tuton who has been getting an
- 11:47Speaker 2: increased role. And when we talk about maybe some players
- 11:50Speaker 2: the Deommi Brown beatj not stepping up and you can go
- 11:52Speaker 2: to other players, that's that's huge.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Listen, this is as high compliment as I can pay.
- 11:56Speaker 5: These are dependable guys. I mean, maybe maybe Brenton's Strange
- 11:59Speaker 5: rises to the level of star at some point in Screw,
- 12:01Speaker 5: but you know that you can put the ball in
- 12:03Speaker 5: the hands of Brenton Strange and he is coming down
- 12:05Speaker 5: with it. And if you need a couple of hard
- 12:07Speaker 5: park LARTs, he's getting that too. Same thing with Parker Washington.
- 12:11Speaker 5: I know he had some drops yesterday, but he's generally
- 12:13Speaker 5: good for.
- 12:14Speaker 3: A couple of tough catches a game.
- 12:15Speaker 5: When your stars aren't performing and you can lean on
- 12:18Speaker 5: your dependable players to get you in that position, you've
- 12:20Speaker 5: got a roster that you can grow with.
- 12:22Speaker 6: Yeah, I think Brenton Strange headed is headed to a
- 12:26Speaker 6: outstanding career. I'm not sure how he could be better
- 12:28Speaker 6: right now unless he was this weird combination of this
- 12:32Speaker 6: physical player and he can run a four three. I mean,
- 12:35Speaker 6: he's outstanding for what they need him to do. He
- 12:39Speaker 6: could have played tight end in any era in this league.
- 12:43Speaker 6: He's a big reason they won this game. And again
- 12:47Speaker 6: go back to they didn't leave. That's a few on
- 12:51Speaker 6: the field. They left the BTJ miss that happened a couple,
- 12:54Speaker 6: but they didn't leave that much on the field. And
- 12:56Speaker 6: they scored when they got in the red zone, and
- 12:58Speaker 6: that when you turn those kind of points and don't
- 13:05Speaker 6: I guess leave them on the field. I was gonna
- 13:06Speaker 6: use another.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Ord Cincinnati last week. They left two scores in the
- 13:09Speaker 3: red zone on the field.
- 13:10Speaker 6: They didn't, so they found a way to win. And
- 13:12Speaker 6: I keep going back to that.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Let's take a look at some of the defensive play.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Here's just one of the sacks they had on the
- 13:17Speaker 2: day against c J. Stroud, But Josh heinz Allen was
- 13:20Speaker 2: all over the place. You think you have to go
- 13:22Speaker 2: with a half sack on this split it with Armstead,
- 13:24Speaker 2: but he obviously is gonna affect the final play of
- 13:26Speaker 2: the game. But just seeing what the past rush has
- 13:29Speaker 2: been able to do, whether it's sacks, whether it's pressures,
- 13:32Speaker 2: whether it's you know, getting a hit on the quarterback.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I feel like that's contributed.
- 13:37Speaker 2: So much to these takeaways, right because they're getting in
- 13:40Speaker 2: a situation where they have a good play on first down,
- 13:42Speaker 2: so then they have the opportunity to rush the passer
- 13:44Speaker 2: and affect things. And obviously it's complimentary football, but it's
- 13:47Speaker 2: good to see Josh hens Allen and Trevon Walker, who
- 13:50Speaker 2: can both be game wreckers if given that ability, you know,
- 13:53Speaker 2: to have a point where they can rush the pass
- 13:55Speaker 2: and really do something there.
- 13:56Speaker 1: It was nice to see Josh affect so many things yesterday.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Yeah, Josh is affecting the offensive coordinator in this ballgame
- 14:03Speaker 5: because they were so reluctant to throw anything down the field.
- 14:08Speaker 5: They just didn't trust their tackles to hold up against
- 14:10Speaker 5: forty one and forty four and his quickness off the edge.
- 14:16Speaker 5: What did seventy nine the rookie year who's world I
- 14:17Speaker 5: can't pronounce left tackle had two holding penalties, He had
- 14:20Speaker 5: a face masking penalty. He affected him too.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Josh does a lot of damage even if he doesn't
- 14:25Speaker 3: have a lot of sacks. Shut.
- 14:26Speaker 6: Yeah, everybody wants to judge defensive ends on sacks. This
- 14:31Speaker 6: is a big debate and the Ozone last week and
- 14:32Speaker 6: people were trying to tell me that Josh, Heines Allen
- 14:34Speaker 6: and Trayvon are playing bad offenses in this day and age,
- 14:40Speaker 6: design things to get the ball out of defensive ends,
- 14:43Speaker 6: I mean out of quarterback's hands, and for Josh to
- 14:47Speaker 6: affect consistently every play. It seemed like yesterday that ranked
- 14:53Speaker 6: to me up in the top two or three games
- 14:55Speaker 6: he's played here because of the moment, because of the
- 14:57Speaker 6: impact he's playing as well as he's played.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Let's take a look.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Kim Little missed a kick at one point, which in
- 15:03Speaker 2: the grand scheme of things, is not a huge deal.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I think we all know he has a great leg
- 15:06Speaker 2: on him, But I think the thing that's slightly concerning
- 15:10Speaker 2: is just to show where the game was going at
- 15:12Speaker 2: that point. It felt like everything was kind of going wrong.
- 15:15Speaker 2: But we can't rely like you know, you see him
- 15:17Speaker 2: make a crazy kick in the preseason.
- 15:18Speaker 6: We can't.
- 15:18Speaker 1: This is not every week things happen.
- 15:21Speaker 2: It's not relying fully on that, but just showing that
- 15:24Speaker 2: that doesn't let you, I think, get out of it,
- 15:27Speaker 2: I guess, is what I'm trying to say.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, I don't think i've seen miss a
- 15:30Speaker 5: kick on the practice field. Then he didn't miss one
- 15:31Speaker 5: in the preseason. It hadn't missed one until that point.
- 15:35Speaker 5: It's a good reminder that that's not a given. It's
- 15:38Speaker 5: not easy to do from forty seven yards away. It
- 15:42Speaker 5: isn't yet that easy to well for any of us
- 15:44Speaker 5: to do from thirty seven yards away.
- 15:46Speaker 6: It's a tough thing, very hard for me to do.
- 15:48Speaker 6: But yeah, it's a first time he has missed it.
- 15:54Speaker 6: As you said, Ryan, anything remotely a competitive situation, he'll
- 15:59Speaker 6: be fine. Obviously, it was a shame that the miss
- 16:02Speaker 6: came in that game, because it was clear when he
- 16:06Speaker 6: missed it. Sometimes you miss field goals. It's not a
- 16:08Speaker 6: big deal in that one. You felt like getting a
- 16:10Speaker 6: ten point lead a lot was the equivalent of a
- 16:13Speaker 6: seventeen point lead in some other style games, So it
- 16:16Speaker 6: was big.
- 16:17Speaker 2: All right, Let's get a little later in this when
- 16:19Speaker 2: things started turn around or things started happening, Houston tried
- 16:22Speaker 2: to get something going. Nego Collins obviously has always been
- 16:25Speaker 2: has been one of the best receivers in the league,
- 16:27Speaker 2: and when he gets going against the Jaguars, it's always
- 16:29Speaker 2: tough but trying to get something going here, but then
- 16:32Speaker 2: you get a takeaway and for the Jaguars to you know, stop,
- 16:35Speaker 2: maybe allow something, but then stop it after that, stop
- 16:38Speaker 2: the bleeding, you know. I think that's huge. We haven't
- 16:40Speaker 2: seen it in the past couple of years at least
- 16:42Speaker 2: because they let things kind of continue to roll and
- 16:44Speaker 2: get away from them. But just Jordan Lewis has been
- 16:47Speaker 2: such an addition to this team in the locker room,
- 16:50Speaker 2: on the field. To think one player can have such
- 16:54Speaker 2: a huge effect on the mentality John, it's been impressive
- 16:56Speaker 2: for me to see it.
- 16:57Speaker 6: Well, yeah, and it's amazing. I'm not sure I've ever
- 17:01Speaker 6: seen a cornerback come in or even even when Jalen
- 17:05Speaker 6: was here. He's probably the best cornerback we've ever recovered
- 17:08Speaker 6: and affect every practice and make plays in every practice,
- 17:13Speaker 6: have his hands on the balls and every practice because
- 17:15Speaker 6: it's hard. Mary Fernando Bryant way back in the day
- 17:18Speaker 6: told me the reason their receptions are hard is the
- 17:21Speaker 6: entire game is schemed to not let you do it.
- 17:25Speaker 6: He does it constantly. Think about this, and Brian, you've
- 17:29Speaker 6: seen every game in franchise history three turnovers forced, all
- 17:33Speaker 6: in the fourth quarter all inside the twenty. I wonder
- 17:36Speaker 6: if there's ever been a game where they've had that
- 17:38Speaker 6: many clutch have to takeaways. It was a remarkable effort
- 17:42Speaker 6: on that part.
- 17:43Speaker 5: I don't remember it ever happening, and I started looking
- 17:45Speaker 5: through the numbers last night. In fact, it's part of
- 17:47Speaker 5: my hot take. It would have to be one of
- 17:50Speaker 5: the great defenses that the jack Wars have had in
- 17:51Speaker 5: ninety nine, two thousand and seven or twenty and seventeen.
- 17:54Speaker 6: But game on the line, you know what I know it.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Was I was writing.
- 17:59Speaker 5: I was kind of sketching out quick thoughts in the
- 18:02Speaker 5: fourth quarters. The fourth quarter started, and my pregame story
- 18:05Speaker 5: pregame storylines last week had been the running game has
- 18:08Speaker 5: been so good, and the Jaguars led the league heading
- 18:11Speaker 5: into that game and takeaways, and in the fourth quarters
- 18:13Speaker 5: it started, they hadn't run the ball, they hadn't taken away,
- 18:16Speaker 5: and then Lewis.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Comes up with that play.
- 18:18Speaker 5: And then after the game in his postgame news conference,
- 18:20Speaker 5: to listen to Liam Colehen talk about Lewis who was
- 18:23Speaker 5: in his office early one morning last week seeking to
- 18:26Speaker 5: be better, and you see the piece of video and
- 18:28Speaker 5: you see the sea on his chest, and you realize
- 18:30Speaker 5: for a cornerback to come in as a free agent, and.
- 18:36Speaker 3: I think everybody hoped that he would be good.
- 18:37Speaker 5: I don't think anyone expected that, but that his team
- 18:39Speaker 5: made him a captain so quickly into this thing tells
- 18:42Speaker 5: you the impact he's had. The Jaguars secondary had no
- 18:44Speaker 5: reason to be confident when this season began, based on
- 18:47Speaker 5: the way that last season ended, and yet they were
- 18:50Speaker 5: largely because of him.
- 18:51Speaker 1: A full one amy for sure.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Let's talk about a little bit about Trevor Lawrence's interception.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Texans get a touchdown out of it.
- 18:58Speaker 2: This is what I'm talking about in terms of this
- 19:00Speaker 2: my hot take a little bit, but just bouncing back
- 19:02Speaker 2: from some things like this, Obviously there's gonna be mistakes made.
- 19:05Speaker 1: This one was tough.
- 19:06Speaker 2: You know, throwing him is double coverage there and the
- 19:08Speaker 2: interception and then it's set up and then Tyson Campbell,
- 19:11Speaker 2: who's had his struggles at points this season. You know,
- 19:14Speaker 2: after this interception, when the jag, when the Texans take over,
- 19:17Speaker 2: kind of a one play, you look away from the
- 19:19Speaker 2: TV for sixty seconds and it's gone gone completely the
- 19:23Speaker 2: other way you get as high game. So it was
- 19:26Speaker 2: inopportune in timing. But as we're going to get to
- 19:29Speaker 2: the other takeaways coming up after that for the Jaguars
- 19:32Speaker 2: on defense. But I think for me seeing Tyson Campbell
- 19:35Speaker 2: kind of give up this play with enough after that
- 19:37Speaker 2: interception and it was.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Just difficult to.
- 19:42Speaker 2: I'm impressed with I'm frustrated at times with how Tyson
- 19:45Speaker 2: is playing, but his mentality to bounce back, which as
- 19:48Speaker 2: a corner has to be your mentality on every single
- 19:51Speaker 2: play to be able to be like, Okay, I gave
- 19:53Speaker 2: something up, but now I need to get back into it.
- 19:55Speaker 1: I was impressed that he.
- 19:56Speaker 5: Was able to do that, forgive himself and forget that play,
- 19:58Speaker 5: because he would come back can make.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Two huge plays.
- 20:01Speaker 5: We've talked about resilience so often it starts to become
- 20:04Speaker 5: a moot point. But yesterday he came back and forced
- 20:07Speaker 5: the fumble that turned the game around for the Jaguars.
- 20:10Speaker 5: And then a play that a lot of people might
- 20:12Speaker 5: forget is on the first play after the Jaguars touchdown,
- 20:15Speaker 5: CJ Shrouds through a beautiful ball to Nico Collins streaking
- 20:19Speaker 5: down the Texans sideline, and I mean he threw it
- 20:21Speaker 5: up high where the tall Collins could pull it in
- 20:24Speaker 5: and Tyson went up and broke it away. I mean,
- 20:26Speaker 5: just a spectacular play that kept the Texans in a
- 20:29Speaker 5: desperate mode. It was awesome to watch him come back.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Let's take a look at let's do that final drive
- 20:36Speaker 2: for the Jaguars. So Btj's catch and then the touchdown.
- 20:40Speaker 2: So we talked a little bit about this off the
- 20:43Speaker 2: top right. William Cohen said this was supposed to be
- 20:45Speaker 2: a design run play. Trevor Lawrence candidate said do this
- 20:49Speaker 2: and said, I like the coverage going to BTJ on
- 20:52Speaker 2: a day when last week all you heard was about
- 20:54Speaker 2: his drops didn't play great all of the game yesterday.
- 20:57Speaker 2: But to come through in that moment and say I'm
- 20:59Speaker 2: gonna trust this guy to go get the football.
- 21:01Speaker 1: That's a good spot to.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Be for me, at least to know that they're still trust,
- 21:04Speaker 2: that they're not pointing the fingers at each other.
- 21:06Speaker 6: Yeah. I happened to walk through the locker room very
- 21:09Speaker 6: late after Trevor had done his his his oppressor. I
- 21:12Speaker 6: was passing his locker and I said it. I asked him.
- 21:15Speaker 6: He says, that's the best uh check you've ever like.
- 21:18Speaker 6: It's change play you've ever had. I thought it was
- 21:21Speaker 6: and he he he kind of thought, I'm sure there
- 21:23Speaker 6: are others. He goes at it. It's a pretty good
- 21:25Speaker 6: way and uh uh, you know, I kind of wanted
- 21:30Speaker 6: to ask him, and I I he also had to
- 21:33Speaker 6: throw the ball to BTJ in that moment, and yes,
- 21:36Speaker 6: he's your best receiver, but it has been struggled. Uh
- 21:39Speaker 6: but you know what, keep going back to the guy,
- 21:41Speaker 6: the point guard, keeps going back to the shooter. And
- 21:44Speaker 6: uh it it was a big, big moment. And as
- 21:47Speaker 6: I said, we've all seen great players, and these guys
- 21:53Speaker 6: aren't great yet, but we've all seen big time players struggle.
- 21:56Speaker 9: Uh.
- 21:56Speaker 6: And then we've all seen the games where that last
- 21:58Speaker 6: drive they come up with the moment when it matters
- 22:00Speaker 6: and you win the game. And you know what, in
- 22:03Speaker 6: a year, we'll remember that play.
- 22:05Speaker 3: It's great for the others. Yeah, and you know, great
- 22:07Speaker 3: check everything. He started the game so sharp.
- 22:09Speaker 5: We showed earlier the throw to Bretton Strange was pinpoint,
- 22:12Speaker 5: and the same thing on the scoring drive to Parker Washington.
- 22:16Speaker 5: And then he had some throws that he would like back,
- 22:19Speaker 5: and then when the moment was the biggest, right, he
- 22:22Speaker 5: comes through with a pinpoint pass and puts his receiver
- 22:26Speaker 5: in a spot where he can excel right the throw
- 22:29Speaker 5: that puts him in a spot where he can turn
- 22:31Speaker 5: and run. It was good to see him finish the
- 22:33Speaker 5: game like he started it.
- 22:34Speaker 6: And I know we're a little long, but two plays
- 22:37Speaker 6: on that drive he had to scramble and then he
- 22:39Speaker 6: had that play where mentally, even though there was stuff
- 22:43Speaker 6: going on a lot of drops, he hadn't played great.
- 22:46Speaker 6: It's a battle. Mentally, he was present in the big
- 22:50Speaker 6: moments and I think he could argue that you won
- 22:52Speaker 6: that game because he made good decisions.
- 22:53Speaker 3: I think so too.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Let's take one final look our final play. I'm gonna
- 22:56Speaker 1: show you guys.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Is that kind of the sealed the game at the
- 22:58Speaker 2: end of the interception Antonio john and who struggled at
- 23:01Speaker 2: points this season as well last year they let go of.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Darnell Savage earlier.
- 23:07Speaker 2: That increased playing time for Antonio Johnson to come across
- 23:09Speaker 2: make that play seal it. To see the growth there
- 23:13Speaker 2: as well, Brian was great.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Oh.
- 23:16Speaker 5: First of all for josh Heinz Allen to reach out
- 23:19Speaker 5: with his left hand like that and just reach and
- 23:21Speaker 5: put it in a position. And they cut Savage as
- 23:23Speaker 5: you mentioned, and they bring in Antonio Johnson.
- 23:25Speaker 3: I thought he had a terrific camp.
- 23:26Speaker 5: I thought he was as sending as camp came to
- 23:28Speaker 5: a close, and then he didn't play. He wasn't other
- 23:33Speaker 5: than special teams, much of a factor and they put
- 23:35Speaker 5: him in and what did he have twenty five or
- 23:36Speaker 5: twenty six snaps yesterday and gets a chance at that
- 23:39Speaker 5: talk about staying involved, staying locked in. I think he's
- 23:44Speaker 5: a guy with a lot of upside and to see
- 23:46Speaker 5: him make a play like that at the end, he's fun.
- 23:49Speaker 6: Yeah, And I'll go to the front of the play
- 23:51Speaker 6: where Heines out had the sack. Liam talked so much
- 23:55Speaker 6: in his presser about the strain for Josh heinz down
- 23:58Speaker 6: and it's me thearing. Okay, it's easiest strain in the
- 24:01Speaker 6: biggest play of the game, But the effort, the inches
- 24:05Speaker 6: that that play was good for him to get that play,
- 24:10Speaker 6: because the game he had, he deserved to be the
- 24:14Speaker 6: one stand at the ten yard line with his hands
- 24:16Speaker 6: in the air.
- 24:17Speaker 5: At some point in the next couple of weeks, Josh
- 24:19Speaker 5: Heines Allen is going to take the record from Tony
- 24:21Speaker 5: Brackens and the all time career sack leader in Jacksonville
- 24:25Speaker 5: and knowing Tony Brackens like we do. I feel certain
- 24:30Speaker 5: that Tony would be proud to have Josh heinz Allen
- 24:33Speaker 5: take his record and go forward because the two of
- 24:35Speaker 5: them are close. But to watch the way that Josh plays,
- 24:41Speaker 5: he has the ability to do some of the things
- 24:43Speaker 5: that Tony did that was a Tony Brackens play there
- 24:45Speaker 5: at the end.
- 24:46Speaker 6: Well, in one final thing, Jordan and Lewis Josh heinz
- 24:49Speaker 6: Allen are we're sort of becoming the leaders of this defense.
- 24:54Speaker 6: There's a lot you never doubt how much they care
- 24:58Speaker 6: not only about how they're playing, but about the team
- 25:03Speaker 6: and winning. Uh. They they're both all about the right things,
- 25:08Speaker 6: and I think that matters for your uh too, your
- 25:10Speaker 6: uh best defensive players.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Stay with us here on jack XAM. Coming up after
- 25:14Speaker 2: the break, we'll give you our hot takes jag XAM
- 25:20Speaker 2: brought to you today and part by Firehouse sub specifically
- 25:23Speaker 2: hot takes.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Got keep my fire house stuff.
- 25:28Speaker 10: Just knowing that you going and things that a lot
- 25:30Speaker 10: of people wanna do but not able to do or
- 25:32Speaker 10: can can do. So, I mean, you gotta gotta have
- 25:34Speaker 10: that mindset and that'll uh help you go out there
- 25:37Speaker 10: and stay focused and stay confident. Uh, just knowing that
- 25:39Speaker 10: that say, now, everybody can do this, So yeah, you
- 25:42Speaker 10: gotta go out there and make you play when it's.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Their numbers helps right times, Junior reminding himself of what
- 25:47Speaker 2: he is capable of doing, and we saw that in
- 25:49Speaker 2: the waning moments of the fourth quarter and help set
- 25:52Speaker 2: up the go ahead touchdown and the winter.
- 25:54Speaker 5: If they're gonna go on the road and and beat
- 25:56Speaker 5: teams like San Francisco, they're gonna need huge games from him.
- 25:59Speaker 3: We might look back.
- 26:00Speaker 5: If he starts to really play well at that play
- 26:03Speaker 5: and if the Jaguars make a deep run this year,
- 26:06Speaker 5: we might look at that place being one of the
- 26:08Speaker 5: most significant plays of the season.
- 26:09Speaker 6: Yeah. Look, nobody is saying that that's automatically fixed. And
- 26:14Speaker 6: I get people watching this or well, he had drops
- 26:16Speaker 6: and he did. They absolutely need him to be the
- 26:21Speaker 6: alpha because it's kind of shown in the last couple
- 26:23Speaker 6: weeks when he's not. There's really not a one to
- 26:29Speaker 6: replace him in the unit yet, So he's got to
- 26:32Speaker 6: play bigger and better. And I think the hope is
- 26:35Speaker 6: that that play is what sparks it all.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Right, Brian, what's your hot take forth today.
- 26:39Speaker 5: So staying with the takeaway theme, because nine takeaways after
- 26:44Speaker 5: a year in which they only had nine. The Jagars
- 26:47Speaker 5: have had three great defenses in their history ninety nine,
- 26:50Speaker 5: two thousand and seven, twenty seventeen, So where does this
- 26:52Speaker 5: one come in. I just thought it'd be interesting to
- 26:54Speaker 5: take a look and see relative to takeaways. So it's
- 26:58Speaker 5: thirty times four meeting three defenses two and seven, twenty seventeen,
- 27:04Speaker 5: and ninety nine all had at least thirty takeaways, and
- 27:08Speaker 5: I think the Jaguars are going to find themselves joining
- 27:11Speaker 5: that club this year. I think the Jaguars of twenty
- 27:14Speaker 5: twenty five will have at least thirty takeaways by the
- 27:17Speaker 5: time the season is done. John in ninety nine they
- 27:19Speaker 5: had nineteen interceptions and eleven fumbles recovered, in two thousand
- 27:25Speaker 5: and seven they did twenty and ten, and in twenty
- 27:28Speaker 5: seventeen they did twenty one to twelve.
- 27:30Speaker 3: So thirty three takeaways is the franchise record, and.
- 27:32Speaker 5: I think that this team, I don't know whether they'll
- 27:35Speaker 5: have the franchise record or not.
- 27:36Speaker 3: And twenty seventeen also scored.
- 27:37Speaker 5: Seven defensive touchdowns, so I mean that's a great defense
- 27:40Speaker 5: and I'm not trying to correlate the two, but I
- 27:42Speaker 5: think that this defense is impactful enough, and we're seeing
- 27:44Speaker 5: already that they can become the fourth Jaguars defense to
- 27:47Speaker 5: have at least thirty takeaways.
- 27:48Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think what will help this defense is
- 27:51Speaker 6: I think this offense, and everybody's down the offense from yesterday,
- 27:55Speaker 6: but they had twenty six and twenty seven in the
- 27:56Speaker 6: first two games, and it was encouraging the immediate Liam
- 28:00Speaker 6: con figured out what was going on with the running
- 28:02Speaker 6: game in the first half, got it fixed in the second.
- 28:05Speaker 6: The defense will be helped because I think this team's
- 28:08Speaker 6: gonna have a lot of leads. As I said earlier,
- 28:11Speaker 6: it's hard for a defense to have mega turnovers when
- 28:15Speaker 6: they're trailing, and I think this offense is gonna happen
- 28:17Speaker 6: in the league quite a bit. John's hot take, well,
- 28:20Speaker 6: I'm gonna wait for the caption because I need to
- 28:21Speaker 6: see it.
- 28:23Speaker 1: I have drawn a blank something about Trevor's bullying.
- 28:26Speaker 6: Yeah, and no more no Moss, but in a different
- 28:32Speaker 6: way than Roberto Duran said it. I I have harped
- 28:39Speaker 6: all morning on the fact that they beat the Texans
- 28:43Speaker 6: in the style that the Texans usually beat them. The
- 28:45Speaker 6: Texans are used to coming in here and winning. They're
- 28:47Speaker 6: used to bullying the Jaguars. They used to the Jaguars
- 28:49Speaker 6: not making plays at the end of games. And I
- 28:52Speaker 6: think in the fourth quarter, when it started to cut
- 28:54Speaker 6: a swirl, I think the Texans thought they were going
- 28:56Speaker 6: to with the game and to turn it around and
- 28:59Speaker 6: then to come up with the big drive and to
- 29:01Speaker 6: say no, we're gonna beat you this way. As much
- 29:07Speaker 6: as people are down on parts of that game, don't
- 29:10Speaker 6: lose sight of the fact that the Texans were a
- 29:12Speaker 6: desperate team coming in here, throwing punches as well as
- 29:15Speaker 6: they could. The Jaguars took the punch in their two
- 29:18Speaker 6: and one, and I think that's a huge, huge game
- 29:21Speaker 6: for them.
- 29:21Speaker 5: Yesterday, I know that when Christian Kirk caught the pass
- 29:25Speaker 5: that took the Texans offense down to about the what
- 29:27Speaker 5: the thirty six thirty seven yard line before Nico Collins bumble,
- 29:31Speaker 5: I thought.
- 29:32Speaker 6: They were going to I felt.
- 29:33Speaker 5: Like it were watching history repeat itself here with a
- 29:36Speaker 5: team that couldn't take advantage of their opportunities, had an
- 29:39Speaker 5: inopportune turnover, and they were gonna take a game that
- 29:43Speaker 5: by all rights they should have won because of the
- 29:45Speaker 5: way that the defense played and give it away.
- 29:47Speaker 3: And then Tyson Campbell sparked the whole thing.
- 29:50Speaker 6: How many times last year did we sit next to
- 29:52Speaker 6: each other in the press by and say here we go? Yep?
- 29:55Speaker 6: It was like it was that feeling, and the Jaguars said,
- 29:57Speaker 6: we're not going not doing that.
- 29:59Speaker 2: They would have lost in years past, they did not yesterday.
- 30:02Speaker 2: For me, that Week three win is better for this
- 30:06Speaker 2: team where they're at right now than a blowout win
- 30:09Speaker 2: would have been for them.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Yes, that's all nice.
- 30:11Speaker 2: When you blow out a team, you go in there
- 30:13Speaker 2: completely dominate, that's great to see. That's not where this
- 30:15Speaker 2: team is at right now. They're rebuilding this thing. They
- 30:17Speaker 2: are trying to set the tone. John talked about it earlier.
- 30:20Speaker 2: When the Colts find a way to win. I watched
- 30:22Speaker 2: the Patriots do it for a very long time. When
- 30:24Speaker 2: people just look at the box score, they go, oh,
- 30:26Speaker 2: they're dominant, They're winning all these games. A lot of
- 30:28Speaker 2: those games are not pretty, a lot of them are
- 30:29Speaker 2: really ugly, a lot of them they don't play well,
- 30:31Speaker 2: and then they just find a way to do it
- 30:33Speaker 2: at the end. Look at the Chiefs the past couple
- 30:35Speaker 2: of years, you think they're not playing very well, then
- 30:37Speaker 2: they do something crazy and they find a way to win.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Having the ability to do that and strike that into
- 30:42Speaker 2: another team, we're not quite there yet. That's the next
- 30:44Speaker 2: step of this is then when you start making a play,
- 30:47Speaker 2: the other team goes into the.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Oh woe is me?
- 30:49Speaker 6: Part.
- 30:49Speaker 2: So that's where you've got to get to the point
- 30:51Speaker 2: where they feel if a team is playing you, that
- 30:54Speaker 2: you're getting to that point where you don't want to
- 30:55Speaker 2: give them anything because then they'll run with it. The
- 30:57Speaker 2: Daguars are learning how to get there, and it was
- 30:59Speaker 2: nice to see them do it in a game where
- 31:01Speaker 2: I didn't feel great about a lot of stuff except
- 31:03Speaker 2: maybe the defense.
- 31:04Speaker 1: They still found a way to get a w.
- 31:06Speaker 3: But you better learn how to do it in this league.
- 31:08Speaker 5: Yesterday seven games were decided in the final minute, and
- 31:12Speaker 5: that's a league. Yeah, that's a record since the merger,
- 31:16Speaker 5: and the blowouts are just fewer and further between them,
- 31:20Speaker 5: and you're gonna get You got the one yesterday with
- 31:22Speaker 5: what the Vikings did to the Bengals, but most every
- 31:25Speaker 5: other game was decided in the final minutes.

- 31:58Speaker 9: How do we respond type and cable Brian Thomas Jones.
- 32:16Speaker 9: When you play complimentary football defensively yellow boys, Yes, it's
- 32:28Speaker 9: not It wasn't pretty in some ways. Understand that, guys,
- 32:31Speaker 9: it doesn't matter. You learn how to win.
- 32:35Speaker 6: We learned how to win.
- 32:38Speaker 1: I gotta learn how to win. Coach got me hyped
- 32:41Speaker 1: up there. And also the throwbacks just look so good.
- 32:45Speaker 2: It's so much better when they're in the nice teal
- 32:48Speaker 2: and the prowlers, and then the graphics as well. If
- 32:50Speaker 2: you guys are at the game, they go full throwback
- 32:52Speaker 2: with everything.
- 32:52Speaker 1: So it was nice to see it.
- 32:54Speaker 5: And we get three more times with him this year. Absolutely,
- 32:57Speaker 5: by the way, great energy from the coach and in
- 32:59Speaker 5: the post in locker room, and I thought even last
- 33:01Speaker 5: week when they lost, he had great energy. That's the
- 33:04Speaker 5: thing when people want to know the difference between Liam Cohen,
- 33:07Speaker 5: the new age coach and some of the older guys.
- 33:09Speaker 3: It's that energy level that he brings at all times.
- 33:11Speaker 6: Yeah, these guys believe in it and that goes a
- 33:14Speaker 6: long way in this league. And they should believe in
- 33:17Speaker 6: it because they're doing things that are gonna sustain them
- 33:20Speaker 6: going forward. They're gonna be in games. I think it's
- 33:23Speaker 6: gonna be an interesting season.
- 33:25Speaker 1: All right. We will be back with you guys on Wednesday.
- 33:28Speaker 2: We'll hear from coach later on today, get some info
- 33:30Speaker 2: about some injuries that Iammy Brown bang up in that game,
