- Lucas: Hey, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo! I'm Lucas, and as always, Luna is here with me. Luna: Hey everyone! So ready for episode 11. Lucas: And today we're going to focus on something super practical — greetings by time of day. You know, like 'good morning', 'good afternoon', that kind of thing. Luna: Oh, I think I remember a few from our very first episode! But honestly, I could use a refresher. Lucas: Perfect, that's exactly what we're here for. So let's start with the most general one, the one you can use anytime — 'Salam'. Say it with me: Salam. Luna: Salam. Lucas: Nice and easy. 'Salam' is like a friendly hello, borrowed from Arabic, but super common in Malay. Now, for specific times of day, we add 'selamat' which means 'safe' or 'peace', and then the time word. So for morning — 'pagi'. Together: Selamat pagi. Luna: Selamat pagi. Lucas: Good. That's 'good morning'. Use it from sunrise until maybe late morning. Now afternoon — 'petang'. So: Selamat petang. Luna: Selamat petang. Lucas: Right. That's 'good afternoon', roughly from midday to late afternoon. And finally, evening or night — 'malam'. So: Selamat malam. Luna: Selamat malam. Lucas: Yes! 'Good evening' or 'good night'. So we have four: Salam, Selamat pagi, Selamat petang, Selamat malam. Let's hear them all from you. Luna: Okay... Salam, Selamat pagi, Selamat petang, Selamat malam. Lucas: Wow, that was great. Let's try a little role-play. Imagine it's early morning and we meet at a café. I'll start: Selamat pagi! Luna: Selamat pagi, Lucas! Lucas: Perfect. Now it's afternoon, and I see you at the park. Selamat petang! Luna: Selamat petang! How's your day? Lucas: Good, good. And now it's evening, we're at a friend's house. Selamat malam! Luna: Selamat malam, Lucas. Sleep well! Lucas: love it. So you see how easy that is? Let's do a quick recap. What do you say in the morning? Luna: Selamat pagi. Lucas: Afternoon? Luna: Selamat petang. Lucas: Evening or night? Luna: Selamat malam. Lucas: And anytime? Luna: Salam. Lucas: You nailed it. Now, one more challenge. Let's mix in something from earlier episodes. Remember 'Apa khabar?' meaning 'How are you?' So if I say 'Selamat pagi! Apa khabar?' you'd say...? Luna: Khabar baik! Terima kasih. Lucas: Yes! So 'Good morning! How are you?' 'I'm good, thanks!' Now you try a full greeting with time of day and a question. You can even throw in a name. Luna: Okay... Selamat petang, Lucas! Apa khabar? Lucas: Khabar baik. Very nice. So listeners, practice these with your friends or just to yourself. Say them throughout the day. It really helps. Luna: I'm going to try saying Selamat pagi to my barista tomorrow. Maybe they'll be impressed. Lucas: Do it! And if you're out in the evening, Selamat malam works too. Alright, that's it for episode 11. Thanks for learning with Fexingo. Luna: Keep practicing, and we'll catch you next time. Selamat malam, everyone! Lucas: Selamat malam, Luna. And to all our listeners — Salam and happy learning!
