- 0:01Speaker 1: Far for you, Glen Coco. You go, Glen Coco. And
- 0:05Speaker 1: when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight,
- 0:08Speaker 1: he's going to find the jolliest bunch of assholes this
- 0:10Speaker 1: side of the nuthouse. Hello and welcome to this very
- 0:15Speaker 1: festive episode of Outspoken. We are coming to you on
- 0:18Speaker 1: Festivus for all the Seinfeld fans. I find tinsel distracting.
- 0:22Speaker 1: That is the best episode of Seinfeld. And for anyone
- 0:25Speaker 1: who doesn't watch Seinfeld, I judge you heavily. It's like friends.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Like you have to watch Seinfeld and Friends and The Simpsons.
- 0:30Speaker 1: But I meet some people who scream that they've watched
- 0:34Speaker 1: every episode of Seinfeld and they say, oh, no, I've
- 0:36Speaker 1: never seen it. I'm like, you need to go and
- 0:38Speaker 1: watch it. So if you haven't seen it, go and
- 0:40Speaker 1: watch the series. Watch the Festivus one today just to
- 0:43Speaker 1: do it some justice. I got a lot of problems
- 0:46Speaker 1: with you. What would you air as one of your
- 0:48Speaker 1: grievances at Festivus? Actually, I know one immediately. I know
- 0:52Speaker 1: one that you would air. Let's have a think. Maybe
- 0:57Speaker 1: influencer related, like do you have a grievance with a
- 0:59Speaker 1: particular influencer or something influencers are doing? We were discussing
- 1:03Speaker 1: the laziness level of some influencers recently. Oh, okay. We
- 1:07Speaker 1: won't name names, but I was watching a vlog. He
- 1:11Speaker 1: named names. I was watching a vlog recently as a
- 1:14Speaker 1: part of someone's vlogmas. And I think this is just
- 1:17Speaker 1: me being a bitter parent now. These girls were talking
- 1:21Speaker 1: about how difficult their life was as influencers and how
- 1:24Speaker 1: the kitchen is always messy and they're always having to
- 1:27Speaker 1: get their car serviced and do that sort of everyday
- 1:30Speaker 1: mundane task. And I was like, it's a fucking holiday
- 1:32Speaker 1: compared to being a parent. Oh my goodness. Especially at
- 1:34Speaker 1: Christmas time. I mean, I thought Christmas was stressful when
- 1:37Speaker 1: I was a single individual. I've always found it fun
- 1:40Speaker 1: to go to the supermarket though, because some people, some
- 1:42Speaker 1: influencers like detest going to the supermarket. They think it's
- 1:45Speaker 1: a chore. Cause I mean, we were talking about this
- 1:47Speaker 1: with a friend also about how these influencers talk about
- 1:51Speaker 1: their to-do list. And I swear that get up and
- 1:55Speaker 1: get out of bed is like one of the things
- 1:57Speaker 1: that they tick off. It's like, make bed, go to
- 2:00Speaker 1: the toilet. We talked about this with a friend. It
- 2:03Speaker 1: was Soph's husband, Brandon. I couldn't remember who it was.
- 2:06Speaker 1: It was Brandon who is forced to watch every single
- 2:08Speaker 1: vlog that Sophie watches. And the other night at family dinner,
- 2:11Speaker 1: it was Kate, Soph and I and Brandon who were
- 2:13Speaker 1: venting about some particular influences we watch and everyone else
- 2:16Speaker 1: was just sitting there like puzzled, like who the hell
- 2:18Speaker 1: are you talking about? Our husbands were like, shut up.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I mean, they just walk out of the room and
- 2:22Speaker 1: we watch this stuff. So anyway. Green flag for Brandon
- 2:25Speaker 1: that he watches and he knows who the people are
- 2:27Speaker 1: that we're talking about. Yeah. What would one of your
- 2:29Speaker 1: grievances be that you'd like to air for Festivus? I
- 2:32Speaker 1: think my grievance is poor women. Women get left with
- 2:37Speaker 1: a lot of the workload at Christmas and most of
- 2:41Speaker 1: the time of the year. Yeah. Yeah, there is a
- 2:45Speaker 1: lot of mental load that comes with organising Christmas. See,
- 2:48Speaker 1: every year I watch the ABC's Grumpy Old Women and
- 2:51Speaker 1: it was filmed, I believe, in 2001. And when I
- 2:54Speaker 1: was 12, I couldn't really relate with the grumpy old women.
- 2:57Speaker 1: They'd always complain about how they have to do everything,
- 2:59Speaker 1: the mental load of Christmas. And now I sit and
- 3:01Speaker 1: I watch it and I go, Yeah, fucking right. Okay, actually,
- 3:05Speaker 1: I've got another grievance with influencers. I've heard so many
- 3:07Speaker 1: of them say Santa. Santa. It's real Australian. It's like,
- 3:11Speaker 1: it's Santa. Well, maybe that's because we're from Adelaide. Yeah,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm sure there'll be people that disagree
- 3:16Speaker 1: and everyone complains about how we pronounce things. But I'm sorry,
- 3:18Speaker 1: it's Santa. Or Father Christmas or FC. Or Father Christmas.
- 3:22Speaker 1: What would you say... is the part of Christmas that
- 3:25Speaker 1: stresses you out the most now, being a mum? What
- 3:28Speaker 1: I'm stressed about this Christmas is Dale and I and
- 3:30Speaker 1: Harry are going to my Uncle Andy's house and we've
- 3:35Speaker 1: got to put Harry down for his nap there. So
- 3:36Speaker 1: I'm a little bit stressed about getting him to sleep. Oh,
- 3:38Speaker 1: the logistics of Christmas Day with a baby are so
- 3:41Speaker 1: difficult because I had my first Christmas. with jack last
- 3:45Speaker 1: year yeah and it was so tiring because we did
- 3:48Speaker 1: christmas morning at my mom and dad's house and we
- 3:51Speaker 1: kind of open all the presents then you got to
- 3:52Speaker 1: put all the presents plus all your other crap in
- 3:54Speaker 1: the car let's just leave it at mom and dad's
- 3:56Speaker 1: house yeah true then we went to reese's parents house
- 4:00Speaker 1: for lunch and then we had to put him down
- 4:02Speaker 1: for a nap somehow he slept his full two hour
- 4:04Speaker 1: nap in a bright room in a port-a-cot like i
- 4:06Speaker 1: don't know how it was a christmas miracle and then
- 4:09Speaker 1: we shipped all of our stuff over to your house
- 4:12Speaker 1: amy for christmas dinner and Jack didn't go to sleep
- 4:14Speaker 1: until 10pm. It was incredibly stressful. We finally put him
- 4:17Speaker 1: down in a port-a-cot. Rhys just wanted to go to bed. Like,
- 4:19Speaker 1: you know when your husband's giving you those eyes like,
- 4:21Speaker 1: we need to leave. But you just want to stay
- 4:23Speaker 1: because I'm like, he's finally asleep. No, the angry, we
- 4:26Speaker 1: need to go home. I'm about to pass out in
- 4:29Speaker 1: a comatose state. Why didn't he leave and you stayed? No,
- 4:32Speaker 1: that was the white party. Oh, okay. Yeah, so... Maybe
- 4:35Speaker 1: we should set up just like beds for you guys
- 4:37Speaker 1: to sleep here because all the boys are going to.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I thought you were going to say like a port-a-cot
- 4:40Speaker 1: and a roll-out mattress for Ruth. Well, because Sophie was
- 4:43Speaker 1: asking me because, yeah, you guys are all coming over
- 4:45Speaker 1: for dinner. It's like the Torba side of the family. Oh,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and some of Dale's family too, of course. And Sophie
- 4:51Speaker 1: was like, wait, where are all the babies going to sleep?
- 4:53Speaker 1: And I'm like, well, Harry will be in. Dale in
- 4:55Speaker 1: my room. And I'm assuming Jack will be in Harry's
- 4:57Speaker 1: nursery and Luca will be in the podcast room. Poor Luca,
- 5:00Speaker 1: because he's the youngest by eight weeks. He always seems
- 5:02Speaker 1: to get the short straw. It's like, oh, he can just,
- 5:05Speaker 1: you know, go in that other room. He can just
- 5:07Speaker 1: sleep outside. Oh, poor little darling. No, he won't be
- 5:10Speaker 1: sleeping outside. He'll be sleeping in the air conditioned comfort
- 5:12Speaker 1: of this podcasting studio. Well, Kate, you're also hosting Christmas
- 5:15Speaker 1: lunch at your house for your in-laws. Yeah. Do you
- 5:18Speaker 1: prefer being the host or a guest? I love hosting.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I absolutely love it. I was excited that we get
- 5:25Speaker 1: to host. The only difficulty is now I don't have
- 5:28Speaker 1: as much time to put everything together. So I'm thinking
- 5:31Speaker 1: of being quite simple with what I'm doing this year.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Also because we've only got three people coming over for
- 5:37Speaker 1: Christmas lunch, which is really unheard of for our family
- 5:39Speaker 1: because we always have these massive Christmas things. But it's
- 5:41Speaker 1: kind of nice because it'll be a lot more chilled out.
- 5:44Speaker 1: We can put Jack down for his nap and then
- 5:46Speaker 1: I can focus on making things will hopefully taste nice
- 5:49Speaker 1: as opposed to like cooking in bulk. But, yeah, I
- 5:52Speaker 1: definitely love hosting but I wouldn't want to host lunch
- 5:55Speaker 1: and dinner. I know some people only do one thing
- 5:57Speaker 1: but we have grown up with mum being one of
- 6:00Speaker 1: four and dad being one of five and we've always
- 6:03Speaker 1: had a massive Christmas day so we always have a
- 6:05Speaker 1: big lunch and a big dinner. We've never sort of
- 6:08Speaker 1: broken it up across a couple of days which in
- 6:10Speaker 1: hindsight seems a little bit silly. I remember as a
- 6:13Speaker 1: kid there was one year that we didn't go to
- 6:16Speaker 1: grandma and grandpa's for lunch. That was so sad. And
- 6:17Speaker 1: we had this like meal at home and I remember
- 6:19Speaker 1: there was this big family fight and we were given–
- 6:22Speaker 1: I think it was a PlayStation 2 or we got
- 6:24Speaker 1: Crazy Taxi and it was just– We had Father Ted also,
- 6:27Speaker 1: Father Ted DVDs that we were watching and we were
- 6:29Speaker 1: on a bike ride. It was actually the worst Christmas ever. Yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I remember mum made some comment about the piece. She
- 6:34Speaker 1: was like– It was like scrumptious. Dad stormed off to
- 6:37Speaker 1: his bedroom, I remember. That was, yeah, probably the worst Christmas.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I remember when Grandma and Grandpa and Nana and Papa
- 6:43Speaker 1: got older, they merged Christmas lunch. Do you remember Grandma
- 6:46Speaker 1: and Grandpa came along to some Goodwin ones? I do
- 6:47Speaker 1: and that was when we were in our uni days
- 6:50Speaker 1: and we had so much time off to actually get
- 6:53Speaker 1: excited about the Christmas period. I remember Sophie and I
- 6:56Speaker 1: and you– well, actually, I don't think you were as
- 6:58Speaker 1: much around it but we had Nigella's Christmas cookbook and
- 7:01Speaker 1: Sophie and I made– it was like this specific– pecan
- 7:04Speaker 1: pie ice cream cake recipe i don't have any recollection
- 7:08Speaker 1: of this at all really i should be playing tennis
- 7:10Speaker 1: eating baked beans at that time drinking vanilla to be
- 7:13Speaker 1: alive here we are bitching about probably influences the same
- 7:17Speaker 1: age that are whinging about going to appointments oh no
- 7:20Speaker 1: it's funny how things change so quickly i remember at
- 7:23Speaker 1: christmas and i think i can say this because This
- 7:26Speaker 1: person is no longer part of our family. I was
- 7:28Speaker 1: going to say part of a– there was a divorce.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I was going to say no longer alive. No, no, no.
- 7:34Speaker 1: That's a bit dark. But this particular person, they wedged
- 7:37Speaker 1: themselves at this point in the table where you couldn't
- 7:41Speaker 1: like move because this person didn't do anything to help. Oh,
- 7:44Speaker 1: they're now divorced. Yeah, yeah. That's what I said. And
- 7:47Speaker 1: this person, they didn't bring anything. Like mum did everything.
- 7:51Speaker 1: This person didn't even bring anything. That's a cardinal sin. Except–
- 7:55Speaker 1: Two cans of root beer. I think you're giving away
- 7:58Speaker 1: the relative because they were American. Well, it's all right.
- 8:00Speaker 1: But it was like, we've put the root beer in
- 8:02Speaker 1: the fridge. Would you take it with them as well? Yes. Yeah.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I think there's nothing worse than people taking back the
- 8:11Speaker 1: food that they've brought. Unless you offer it. Like sometimes
- 8:14Speaker 1: if someone brings something over, you take this because it
- 8:16Speaker 1: hasn't even been opened or we're not going to eat it.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Or if they leave some of it for you, like
- 8:21Speaker 1: you're like, oh, no, because we don't need the full serve.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So you leave some of it. You know, when you've
- 8:25Speaker 1: got like a really good, say you've got like all
- 8:28Speaker 1: these desserts left and you're thinking mentally, I'm going to
- 8:30Speaker 1: have that tomorrow night. I'm going to have this for
- 8:32Speaker 1: the afternoon. And then your husband's like, here, guys, take everything, guys.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And you're like, wait a second. Wait, please don't. Hold on.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I'm planning to– I've already mentally eaten. I'm planning to
- 8:43Speaker 1: gorge on these on Boxing Day, my pyjamas. That is
- 8:46Speaker 1: the best when you host because there's nothing better. Like
- 8:49Speaker 1: I love having trifle left over and just like– because
- 8:52Speaker 1: it gets better, I think, a couple of days later
- 8:54Speaker 1: when it's all sort of mushed together. Well, we're actually doing–
- 8:57Speaker 1: we're doing Boxing Day with Dale's family. I know you've
- 9:00Speaker 1: left us high and dry on Boxing Day because we
- 9:01Speaker 1: normally do it with our uncle and auntie, but we're
- 9:03Speaker 1: going to do that a different day. I know. We've
- 9:05Speaker 1: actually got to work that out. Actually, to be honest–
- 9:08Speaker 1: It's kind of good because I love having a day
- 9:10Speaker 1: relaxing at home. And now in my stage of life,
- 9:13Speaker 1: having a child, I live for the nights when you
- 9:16Speaker 1: can just lie on the couch. Actually, you might watch
- 9:18Speaker 1: a Christmas movie. I've been so bad this year. I've
- 9:21Speaker 1: only watched two. I watched Elf at the Moonlight Cinemas.
- 9:24Speaker 1: And then I watched, there's some like, is it Christmas?
- 9:27Speaker 1: There's some Christmas thing on Netflix about a break-in at
- 9:30Speaker 1: a department store that was funny. It was like an
- 9:31Speaker 1: English one. I have no idea what that is. It
- 9:34Speaker 1: was ranking high on Netflix. I've been watching the, I
- 9:36Speaker 1: was going to say the Mr. Bean Christmas thing, but
- 9:37Speaker 1: it's literally Mr. Bean. It's just Rowan Atkinson. He, it's this,
- 9:43Speaker 1: it's his TV series where Rowan Atkinson gets left with
- 9:46Speaker 1: his child. And I've only watched episode one, but I've
- 9:49Speaker 1: found it really good. Yeah. I've enjoyed it. And I
- 9:52Speaker 1: really want to watch the holiday. I watched it last
- 9:55Speaker 1: year and I sort of feel like it wasn't that
- 9:56Speaker 1: long ago. Like I know there's, Christmas movies I watch
- 9:59Speaker 1: every year. I need to watch Lampoon's Christmas Vacation because
- 10:01Speaker 1: I actually didn't watch it last year, which was terrible
- 10:04Speaker 1: because I save it to watch right like close when
- 10:07Speaker 1: you're feeling really Christmassy and I ran out of time.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I actually cried during The Holiday. I think I was
- 10:11Speaker 1: so hormonal. It was when the little girls were talking
- 10:13Speaker 1: about their mum who passed away. Oh, well, I can
- 10:15Speaker 1: understand that. Do you know what? This is really embarrassing,
- 10:17Speaker 1: but I got really sad when like they're talking about
- 10:20Speaker 1: Christmas cheer and they're trying to get the sleigh to work.
- 10:23Speaker 1: And then like when the sleigh flies through New York
- 10:27Speaker 1: and Christmas is saved, I was like, it's so unfair
- 10:29Speaker 1: that Santa's not real. You know what I mean? Hey,
- 10:32Speaker 1: don't say that. That's not true. He is real. Well,
- 10:34Speaker 1: I mean, Dale and I both said we got teary
- 10:36Speaker 1: at the end of the movie. So don't feel ashamed. No,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I'm not. Dale is known to cry in a lot
- 10:40Speaker 1: of movies, actually. Like ones that aren't even that sad.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Ever since having a baby, I have been crying so much.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And I'm a sort of person that's so cold. Like
- 10:48Speaker 1: there was a, running joke that I was really cold
- 10:50Speaker 1: and robotic during my wedding, calling some fucking assholes on tattle. And,
- 10:55Speaker 1: you know, like Rhys is more of the crier and
- 10:57Speaker 1: I'm sort of someone that keeps it in. I've been
- 10:58Speaker 1: crying at really random times, like really getting emotional in
- 11:01Speaker 1: touch with my feelings. This was pre-baby for Dale though.
- 11:04Speaker 1: This was pre-baby. Oh, he didn't get it through his
- 11:06Speaker 1: maternal bond. No. I want to talk about Christmas food.
- 11:11Speaker 1: So what is one Christmas food that you love that
- 11:14Speaker 1: everyone else hates? Oh, sorry, I was going to say
- 11:17Speaker 1: Turkish delight, but that's not a Christmas food. My grandma
- 11:19Speaker 1: always had Turkish delight at Christmas time. This isn't a
- 11:22Speaker 1: Christmas food that I actually like, but I want to
- 11:25Speaker 1: like mince pies. Like I remember liking them as a
- 11:27Speaker 1: kid and they always seemed really Christmassy to me. See,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I want to make mince pies. Nigella has a mince
- 11:33Speaker 1: pie recipe. Don't do it. Like it's just too much.
- 11:36Speaker 1: But it's really hard to find all that minced fruit
- 11:38Speaker 1: sort of stuff. Do you know what? Last year I
- 11:40Speaker 1: didn't even have a piece of pudding. I used to
- 11:43Speaker 1: hate pudding when I was little and I like it now,
- 11:45Speaker 1: but it was just, I made a stupid mistake of
- 11:48Speaker 1: looking how much sugar it had on the back of it.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Oh my God, you don't worry about that. I know,
- 11:51Speaker 1: I know. I'm going to have it this year, but
- 11:53Speaker 1: I just was like, You know when you get a
- 11:54Speaker 1: real sugar high and then you just crash? And because
- 11:56Speaker 1: I was pregnant, I just didn't want to do it
- 11:58Speaker 1: to myself. Oh my God, I'm going to have copious
- 12:00Speaker 1: amounts of Christmas pudding. I had like pavlova and stuff,
- 12:03Speaker 1: but I just couldn't do it. That's one that I've
- 12:05Speaker 1: really gone off pavlova recently, which is a bad one
- 12:08Speaker 1: to say because I mentioned to mum that I don't
- 12:09Speaker 1: like it. And she's like, oh, I've got that for
- 12:11Speaker 1: Christmas Eve. And she's like, oh, do you want me
- 12:13Speaker 1: to do a pudding? And I was like, oh, no, no,
- 12:14Speaker 1: don't worry about it. No, no, no, not a pudding
- 12:15Speaker 1: on Christmas Eve. I think that's too heavy. Now, Amy,
- 12:18Speaker 1: are you a savoury or sweet Christmas person? I think
- 12:21Speaker 1: in general I've become a savoury person. I know this
- 12:24Speaker 1: is going to sound really lame and maybe it's just
- 12:26Speaker 1: a sign of my age, but I actually really love
- 12:29Speaker 1: some fresh salads for Christmas. I love the potatoes. I
- 12:32Speaker 1: love getting a bit of cranberry sauce and putting it
- 12:35Speaker 1: with my potatoes, which I don't think you're meant to do.
- 12:37Speaker 1: You're meant to put it with ham, but for some
- 12:38Speaker 1: reason it just reminds me of. We're vegetarian as well,
- 12:40Speaker 1: so you don't have ham, so you've got to have
- 12:41Speaker 1: it with something. Every time the cranberry sauce comes out,
- 12:44Speaker 1: I'm like, why is this not a condiment we use
- 12:45Speaker 1: all year round? It's so good. It is good. I
- 12:48Speaker 1: would say I'm probably more of a sweet person because
- 12:51Speaker 1: I love baking. So whenever I think of Christmas, I
- 12:53Speaker 1: think of sweet things like trifle and pudding. I mean,
- 12:56Speaker 1: because you can do roast anytime. I saw Coles had
- 12:59Speaker 1: a Christmas dessert section and they had the typical pudding.
- 13:02Speaker 1: They had cookies and all this sort of stuff. And
- 13:03Speaker 1: then they had these pistachio-filled brandy snaps. Oh, yum. And
- 13:07Speaker 1: they sounded delicious, but I was like, is that Christmas?
- 13:09Speaker 1: I think pistachios are really Christmassy. Pistachios particularly remind me
- 13:13Speaker 1: of Christmas because our grandparents used to have this amazing
- 13:16Speaker 1: spread at Christmas dinner where– you'd arrive. And before you
- 13:19Speaker 1: even have dinner, there was these massive platters of all
- 13:21Speaker 1: different nuts and like it was pistachios and cashews and cheese.
- 13:25Speaker 1: It was so good. Yeah. I really want to emulate
- 13:27Speaker 1: grandma and grandpa's Christmas this year because it's going to
- 13:30Speaker 1: go with my vintage theme. That is my goal every year. Yeah.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Except we're not going to have tongue. So our grandma
- 13:36Speaker 1: was English and she always served tongue and no one
- 13:38Speaker 1: except her ate it. Except there was one year where
- 13:40Speaker 1: our cousin bought her boyfriend a And he ate it.
- 13:44Speaker 1: We thought it was so funny. Oh, that was hilarious.
- 13:45Speaker 1: The other memory of Christmas at Grandma and Grandpa's is
- 13:48Speaker 1: they would have these massive eskies. I was talking about
- 13:51Speaker 1: it the other day. And one would be full of
- 13:54Speaker 1: just full strength Coke. The other one would be full
- 13:56Speaker 1: of like full strength Sprite. No diet, soft drinks whatsoever.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And then it would just be all beers. And I
- 14:02Speaker 1: remember as a kid seeing all of the dads just
- 14:04Speaker 1: drinking so many beers. And you'd think, well, maybe tonight
- 14:08Speaker 1: I'll have 10 Cokes. And sometimes we did drink a
- 14:11Speaker 1: lot of Cokes. We were buzzing off the walls. What
- 14:13Speaker 1: is one family argument that you would say reliably pops
- 14:17Speaker 1: up every year? Because I have this vivid memory for
- 14:20Speaker 1: quite some time of Christmas Eve always there being some
- 14:24Speaker 1: massive argument and the family would all come together because
- 14:27Speaker 1: dad would come down and start dancing when the kids
- 14:29Speaker 1: group on Christmas. Like high five. On Carol's by Candlelight
- 14:32Speaker 1: came on, like dad would make us laugh by copying
- 14:35Speaker 1: high fives dance moves or something and break the ice.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I can't quite remember what the arguments were about, but
- 14:39Speaker 1: I think they were stemming from the fact that we
- 14:41Speaker 1: might've been having Christmas at our house and we had
- 14:43Speaker 1: to clean up all day. There's a lot of stress.
- 14:44Speaker 1: A lot of stress involved. I mean, if you think
- 14:46Speaker 1: about it, mum and dad were probably trying to secretly
- 14:48Speaker 1: wrap presents or put things together. So tensions were high,
- 14:52Speaker 1: but yeah, I vividly remember one day being outside. I
- 14:55Speaker 1: don't know. Maybe we're looking at the Christmas lights. It
- 14:57Speaker 1: was light at this point and dad came out in
- 14:59Speaker 1: a garbage bag Wearing it? Yeah, he came. Maybe he
- 15:03Speaker 1: didn't step outside in it, but when we walked inside,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I don't know, there was something like he had a
- 15:07Speaker 1: garbage bag and that was him dressed up as one
- 15:09Speaker 1: of the members of High Five. Oh, do you remember that? Actually,
- 15:13Speaker 1: I do now that you're saying it because the costumes
- 15:15Speaker 1: are quiet. And it just sort of changed everything. But
- 15:17Speaker 1: since those little tiffs as a family, Christmas Eve has
- 15:21Speaker 1: become my favourite day of the year. I actually enjoy
- 15:24Speaker 1: it more than Christmas. I think in terms of like
- 15:26Speaker 1: the arguments that regularly pop up, it's always sort of about,
- 15:29Speaker 1: you know, I would say normally the arguments sort of
- 15:33Speaker 1: stem from, you know, working out your Christmas day plans
- 15:36Speaker 1: leading into Christmas and who's coming and who's not and
- 15:39Speaker 1: that sort of thing. Like the stress of trying to
- 15:41Speaker 1: work out a time that suits everyone to visit because
- 15:45Speaker 1: you don't want to miss out on seeing people. But
- 15:47Speaker 1: then also, you know, when you have in-laws and your
- 15:51Speaker 1: family starts to get bigger, it gets more complicated and
- 15:54Speaker 1: then you don't want to offend anyone either. I remember
- 15:57Speaker 1: a recent Christmas Eve and we were having everyone around
- 16:00Speaker 1: our house. So Christmas Eve I was in the kitchen,
- 16:02Speaker 1: I was listening to Christmas music, really enjoying it, getting
- 16:05Speaker 1: all the stuff together and Dale insisted that he had
- 16:09Speaker 1: to go next door because the neighbours had invited us
- 16:11Speaker 1: over and I was like thinking, well, maybe could you
- 16:14Speaker 1: kind of help clean up or, you know what I mean, something. Actually,
- 16:18Speaker 1: his role tends to be getting the ice. See, I
- 16:22Speaker 1: remember our dad's role used to be going and collecting
- 16:24Speaker 1: the chickens on Christmas morning. Oh, yeah, he's been complaining
- 16:26Speaker 1: about that already. But I loved going with him because
- 16:29Speaker 1: for some reason, As a kid, it probably still happens now,
- 16:32Speaker 1: but I used to be like, it's so bizarre being
- 16:34Speaker 1: out of the house and seeing other people on Christmas Day.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Like this is everyone's Christmas Day. Yeah. Yeah. No, I
- 16:39Speaker 1: love that too. It just always seems so special. But
- 16:41Speaker 1: it was so funny because our kitchen's at the back
- 16:44Speaker 1: of our house and I had the window open and
- 16:46Speaker 1: I could hear Dale talking to the neighbours and laughing
- 16:48Speaker 1: and I'm in there frigging peeling like 20 potatoes and whatever.
- 16:52Speaker 1: But I still had a great time. Sounds like it. No,
- 16:56Speaker 1: I actually genuinely did. I want to know, what is
- 16:58Speaker 1: your earliest Christmas memory? I have memories of being at
- 17:03Speaker 1: our Aunty Drinda's coach house. Sorry, that sounds really like … Privileged. Well,
- 17:11Speaker 1: our Aunty Drinda is a psychiatrist and her husband was
- 17:14Speaker 1: a psychiatrist so you can kind of get a theme
- 17:16Speaker 1: of that they were the rich side of the family
- 17:18Speaker 1: and they had an incredible house. Oh, my God. And
- 17:20Speaker 1: at their– because they either had their Christmas out in
- 17:22Speaker 1: the coach house. It was always at Grandma and Grandpa's
- 17:24Speaker 1: but that year it was at their house and And
- 17:26Speaker 1: Aunty Drinda had a gingerbread house. Oh, that was incredible.
- 17:29Speaker 1: It was specifically made. It had like the candy stained windows.
- 17:32Speaker 1: And this was what, like 30 years ago when it
- 17:34Speaker 1: wasn't a thing. Like, you know, the Kardashians now, like
- 17:36Speaker 1: Kris Jenner's always sending them like those sort of massive
- 17:40Speaker 1: gingerbread houses with all their family. And that was kind
- 17:42Speaker 1: of the caliber of the gingerbread house. Like it was
- 17:44Speaker 1: a very fancy one. And I remember we got sleeping
- 17:46Speaker 1: bags that year and our cousin Hamish was dragging us
- 17:48Speaker 1: around in the sleeping bags. I have a vivid memory
- 17:50Speaker 1: of that too. I remember a Christmas, I don't know
- 17:53Speaker 1: how old we were at Nana and Papa's and it
- 17:55Speaker 1: was in their back room. And I remember just, remember
- 17:58Speaker 1: they had those bright colored curtains? It was like yellow
- 18:01Speaker 1: and green and white. And they have a pool table.
- 18:03Speaker 1: And we'd always used to play pool with Papa. And
- 18:06Speaker 1: it was just that long extended table that was like higgledy-piggledy,
- 18:10Speaker 1: like different tablecloths. And they have this specific decoration that
- 18:14Speaker 1: our mom has now that was our great grandparents that
- 18:16Speaker 1: always sat in prime position. And I remember... Papa, like
- 18:21Speaker 1: I think we went there Christmas Eve and Papa was
- 18:23Speaker 1: trying to work out where to put the place cards
- 18:25Speaker 1: because it was always contentious of who was sitting next
- 18:28Speaker 1: to who. Well, I was going to say, what do
- 18:29Speaker 1: you think of place cards? Yes or no? Well, say
- 18:32Speaker 1: for like Reese's. Yes, small family. For the small family lunch.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I think people can sit where they want. But it's
- 18:38Speaker 1: funny because whenever we host family dinner with our family
- 18:40Speaker 1: and also with Reese's family, everyone already has their spots.
- 18:43Speaker 1: But I think when it is a big Christmas family lunch,
- 18:47Speaker 1: name tags are imperative. They need to be done. What
- 18:49Speaker 1: do you think for the Christmas dinner we're doing? Actually,
- 18:52Speaker 1: do you know what? I wouldn't mind having it because
- 18:54Speaker 1: then it sort of stops that awkward thing where someone
- 18:57Speaker 1: sits in the middle of the table and then there's
- 18:59Speaker 1: like a mismatch of people. Like I think it would
- 19:02Speaker 1: be good because I think the beauty is that people
- 19:04Speaker 1: can wander around anyway, but then you've got a set
- 19:06Speaker 1: spot and you're not having to like You know, sometimes
- 19:09Speaker 1: you want to sit next to your partner or like
- 19:11Speaker 1: we might want to sit next to each other and
- 19:13Speaker 1: someone might steal the spot, incidentally. Someone wrote in and
- 19:16Speaker 1: asked us, Kate, how many drinks is too many drinks
- 19:19Speaker 1: on Christmas Day? Because people start drinking quite early. Like
- 19:22Speaker 1: you have your champagne breakfast. Well, I'm not someone that
- 19:25Speaker 1: regularly drinks. Like I might have a drink. at a
- 19:29Speaker 1: stretch at a hen's party or for a very special occasion.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Like I had a Singapore sling at my wedding. But
- 19:37Speaker 1: I don't actually drink on Christmas Day. I think seven
- 19:40Speaker 1: cans of Coke is acceptable. Yeah, but I think, I mean,
- 19:43Speaker 1: you do you. Like if as long as you're not
- 19:45Speaker 1: driving I don't think it really matters as long as
- 19:47Speaker 1: you're not being a pain in the ass to all
- 19:49Speaker 1: your relatives or it's funny because our cousins Cameron and
- 19:52Speaker 1: Stuart they always come in like normally we'll catch up
- 19:55Speaker 1: with them Christmas night and they've always got a tally
- 19:56Speaker 1: of like I've had 12 beers you're like well that's
- 19:58Speaker 1: like last year they came over to my house and
- 20:00Speaker 1: It's because they live a street away from me that
- 20:03Speaker 1: they brought their esky along and they had to bring
- 20:05Speaker 1: it on a trolley. The way they came in and
- 20:07Speaker 1: entered the backyard with this freaking trolley, everyone was like,
- 20:10Speaker 1: these boys are in for a big night. It was
- 20:12Speaker 1: just so classically them. And I love that they had
- 20:15Speaker 1: wheeled it down the street after consuming 12 beers and
- 20:17Speaker 1: probably went on to have about, I don't know, quite
- 20:19Speaker 1: a few more after that. Well, that is where we're
- 20:22Speaker 1: going to leave part one of this special Christmas series.
- 20:25Speaker 1: We'll be dropping part two on Christmas Eve, and I
- 20:27Speaker 1: hope people listen to it while they're getting their Christmas
- 20:30Speaker 1: dinner organized. Yeah, hopefully today's episode is making you feel
- 20:33Speaker 1: really festive. Can't wait to be in your ears tomorrow.
- 20:36Speaker 1: And if you do want to hear more from us,
