- 0:00Ezekiel chapter 12 the exile symbolized dear Lord, please be
- 0:06with us as we read through this chapter or maybe more and let us
- 0:11have wisdom and insight from the Holy Spirit and anything that
- 0:16would apply to our current lives or ways of living.
- 0:20Please reveal that to us. We ask that this in Jesus name,
- 0:25Amen. The exile symbolized the word of
- 0:28the Lord. Came to me, Son of man, you are
- 0:31living among a rebellious people.
- 0:33They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear.
- 0:38But they do not hear for they are a rebellious people.
- 0:43So I had underlined that in my Bible because a rebellious
- 0:46people, they have everything they need to listen to God.
- 0:52They have eyes and ears. They can hear and they can see,
- 0:56but they can continue in rebellious ways, so that can
- 1:01apply to us as well. Therefore, Son of Man, pack your
- 1:06belongings for exile, and in daytime, as they watch, set out
- 1:11and go from where you are to another place.
- 1:14Perhaps they will understand, though, they are a rebellious
- 1:18people. During the daytime while they
- 1:21watch, bring out your belongings packed for exile.
- 1:25Then in the evening while they're watching, go out like
- 1:28those who go into exile. While they watch, dig through
- 1:33the wall and take your belongings out through it.
- 1:37Put them on your shoulders as they are watching and carrying
- 1:39them out. At dusk, cover your face so that
- 1:43they cannot see the land. For I have made you a sign to
- 1:47the Israelites. So we have to remember this is
- 1:50God talking to Ezekiel, giving him instructions on how he's
- 1:54going to get a message to the Israelites.
- 1:58Verse 7. So I did what I was commanded
- 2:00during the day. I brought out my things, packed
- 2:02for exile. Then in the evening I dug
- 2:04through the wall with my hands. I took my belongings out at
- 2:07dusk, carrying them on my shoulders while they watched.
- 2:10In the morning the word of the Lord came to me.
- 2:14It's really interesting because God keeps communicating with him
- 2:16as he's obeying, and that might be significant too, like God may
- 2:21communicate more when we are obedient.
- 2:25In the morning the word of the Lord came to me.
- 2:27Son of Man, did not the Israelites that rebellious
- 2:31people ask you, what are you doing?
- 2:34This is another point that God's seeing.
- 2:37He's watching everything we're doing right now, just like he
- 2:41was watching Ezekiel. He's saying to this, didn't
- 2:44those rebellious people ask you, what are you doing?
- 2:47So he's watching the whole time to see how people respond.
- 2:50And that applies to us today too, because God is watching to
- 2:54see how we respond to the message about his Kingdom.
- 2:58Verse 10 Say to them, This is what the sovereign Lord says.
- 3:03This prophecy concerns the Prince in Jerusalem and all the
- 3:09Israelites who were there. Say to them, I am a sign to you.
- 3:14As I have done so it will be done to them.
- 3:19They will go into exile as captives.
- 3:21The Prince among them will put his things on his shoulder at
- 3:25dusk and leave, and a hole will be dug in the wall for him to go
- 3:30through. He will cover his face so that
- 3:33he cannot see the land. I will spread my net for him,
- 3:38and he will be caught in my snare.
- 3:41I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, but he
- 3:45will not see it. And there he will die.
- 3:49I will scatter to the winds all those around him, his staff and
- 3:53all his troops, and I will pursue them with drawn sword.
- 3:59So there's a lot in that little paragraph there in that verse, I
- 4:04guess. 17 And let's see. So there's there's a Prince
- 4:09among them and thankfully the study Bible helps us with that.
- 4:14Who was the Prince? This was Zedekiah, the king of
- 4:18Jerusalem, who tried but failed to escape capture in by the
- 4:25Babylonians. And that whole account is found
- 4:28in second Kings chapter 25 verse through one through 6.
- 4:34So and then it says that so he tried to escape the Babylonians,
- 4:41but what happened is the Babylonians captured him and
- 4:45they also blinded him and then they executed his sons in front
- 4:50of him. I think they did that first they
- 4:52executed his sons in front of him and then they blinded him
- 4:56and then they took him into captivity.
- 4:57So, you know, this is a prophecy that Ezekiel gave that was
- 5:03actually fulfilled. And it is kind of like it's
- 5:07stated clearly when you read it in hindsight.
- 5:10But if you're reading it or hearing it in advance of
- 5:14something happened, of something happening, then there would be a
- 5:18lot of questions like what does this mean?
- 5:21And that's the same for us today with prophecy that when we look
- 5:26at it in hindsight, we'll probably see, oh, that's how it
- 5:29happened. But today a lot of people are
- 5:33speculating because it is kind of almost like a Riddle.
- 5:38And I do think that the Holy Spirit reveals things to people
- 5:41and reveals things gradually, just like the prophet Daniel,
- 5:46who he said, you know, when he gave the prophecy, he said these
- 5:51will be sealed up until the end. So in the end, is God revealing
- 5:56these things, you know that they nobody could figure them out
- 6:00until the time was appropriate. And it seems like that is the
- 6:06case actually. So going back to what the
- 6:09Scripture said, the prophecy about Zedekiah, I will spread my
- 6:15net for him. So Zedekiah was captured and he
- 6:17will be caught in my snare. So you can also see that God is
- 6:21actually behind this, like he's saying this in the future about
- 6:25what's going to happen. And he's using the Babylonians,
- 6:29he's using Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar is his resource,
- 6:34his tool. Nebuchadnezzar has it in his own
- 6:38heart to do these things. So God's not forcing him or
- 6:41manipulating him to do this. He's letting Nebuchadnezzar's
- 6:44free will decide that he wants to do this, but God is allowing
- 6:49it because of what Israel did. So this shows us a lot about how
- 6:55God responds to, I guess our, our rebellion in general.
- 7:03I mean, this is specifically to Israel, but it is applicable
- 7:06because God doesn't change. So if we are rebellious, the
- 7:10same would hold true for us because he, he doesn't have any
- 7:14favorites. He shows no favoritism.
- 7:17He's a just God. And when we read these things,
- 7:20we can we can apply these to ourselves because because God
- 7:26doesn't change. And it's a good way to evaluate
- 7:29our lives. Like if we've been give getting
- 7:31warnings or if we've been feeling a conviction from the
- 7:35Holy Spirit about certain things in our life, we need to address
- 7:38those things and, and work with God, not against God to change
- 7:44those. You know, ask for more power
- 7:45from the Holy Spirit to overcome things because the Holy Spirit
- 7:50has that power available. It's just do we trust in God?
- 7:53Are we going to try and do things on our own?
- 7:56So let's see, I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the
- 8:00Chaldeans, but he will not see it and there he will die.
- 8:03So people would probably be questioning, you know, how is he
- 8:07going to bring him to the Chaldeans?
- 8:10But he won't see it. How could he not see it if he's
- 8:12there? Well, you know, that's how it
- 8:14was actually fulfilled. He was blinded.
- 8:17His eyes were gouged out, which is awful.
- 8:19But that's what happened to Zedekiah, the king of Israel.
- 8:25I will scatter to the winds all those around him, his staff and
- 8:29all his troops, and I will pursue them with a drawn sword.
- 8:32Remember, this was also the prophecy about that.
- 8:36I think it was Jeremiah that gave.
- 8:37He said that those who stayed in Jerusalem would be killed by the
- 8:43sword, but those who fled are not fled, but, you know, went
- 8:48into exile with the Babylonians. They should do it peaceably and
- 8:54they would retain their life and they could have families and
- 9:00they could, you know, work and do all these things, but they
- 9:03would be in captivity during that time.
- 9:05And those things were holding true.
- 9:09Verse 15 They will know that I am the Lord when I disperse them
- 9:14among the nations and scatter them through the countries.
- 9:17But I will spare a few of them from the sword, famine and
- 9:22plague, so that in the nations where they go, they may
- 9:27acknowledge all their detestable practices.
- 9:31So that's interesting too. So he's sparing a few of them,
- 9:35not showing favoritism, but he's saying so that in the nations
- 9:40where they go, they may acknowledge all their detestable
- 9:45practices. So God knows our hearts.
- 9:47So maybe he is sparing the ones whose hearts see all the
- 9:53detestable. I mean, they recognize, they
- 9:55realize that these are bad things that Israel or you know,
- 10:02like in our case that we have done and that we would
- 10:07acknowledge that that's what God wants us to, to see the things
- 10:11that we're doing that are so awful, to recognize that not
- 10:14say, oh, they're OK, they're not that bad, but recognize them and
- 10:19evaluate the way we live according to what God says is
- 10:24right and wrong. We don't make up the rules.
- 10:26God is the creator. He, he made everything.
- 10:29He created us. He makes the rules and we get to
- 10:35choose to either live by them or reject them.
- 10:39If we're willing to live by them, we can be in his Kingdom.
- 10:43If we just say, no, I don't, I don't want your rules, God,
- 10:46that's it. Then we can live in the
- 10:48alternate place, which is the burning lake of fire and or I
- 10:52don't know if it's there, but it's something that there will
- 10:56be permanent torment and God is just so whatever we've done, you
- 11:02know, it's it's like what you sow you will reap.
- 11:06So it's but it's going to not be a place that people are happy
- 11:13in. It's really interesting if you
- 11:18not that we can put a lot of faith in near death experiences,
- 11:21but there our people, if you search near death experiences,
- 11:26some people experience the presence of God and others
- 11:30experienced a horrible place that they just wanted to escape
- 11:34from and God actually spared them.
- 11:37It seems like God actually gave them a vision or an insight to
- 11:41what what place they may have been headed to.
- 11:45And those people who had that vision and saw that in their
- 11:48near death experience, when they didn't die, they turned to the
- 11:53Lord. I don't know that there was any
- 11:56single one who kept the same life that they did.
- 11:59At least from videos that I've seen, that people have given
- 12:03their testimonies about what happened to them.
- 12:05And I think God allows that. And so people will listen to
- 12:09that. He's trying to reach people in
- 12:11so many different ways. Some people will respond to
- 12:15that. Other people.
- 12:17I mean, there's so many different ways that a person,
- 12:21all, you know, all of a sudden realizes that this is true and
- 12:27that God is present, God is living, and what God has said
- 12:32will actually happen. OK, let's get back to Scripture.
- 12:37So he wants, you know, He wants people to know him.
- 12:40Verse 17 The word of the Lord came to me, son of man, tremble
- 12:44as you eat your food, and shudder in fear as you drink
- 12:47your water, say to the people of the land, This is what the
- 12:50sovereign Lord says about those living in Jerusalem and in the
- 12:54land of Israel. They will eat their food in
- 12:57anxiety and drink their water in despair, for their land will be
- 13:02stripped of everything. Now it gives a reason why
- 13:07everything in it because of the violence of all who live there.
- 13:12So these must be like God is not in just he is a just a righteous
- 13:20God. And so he if he does these
- 13:24things, we may think, Oh my gosh, that's horrible that he's
- 13:26doing this. But do we really know?
- 13:31I mean, if, if we saw what God saw, in fact, people are often
- 13:36harsher than God, God is merciful.
- 13:39And if people actually saw what God saw, they might say, oh, get
- 13:44rid of them right now, kill them, you know, I mean, and we
- 13:47just don't know everything. So we make assumptions just
- 13:51thinking that all people are good or these are innocent
- 13:54people. But God is saying right here,
- 13:57it's because of the violence of all who live there.
- 14:01And if people see true violence for no reason, in fact all
- 14:07reasons, I mean, God would, you know, the vengeance is his.
- 14:11But if people see that and say it comes against them or against
- 14:17their family, they want justice. And so that's what God does.
- 14:21So we we can't be double minded with this.
- 14:27I mean, if we put ourselves in a position where either we or our
- 14:32family or someone we care about is really violated, hurt, and we
- 14:39will want justice for them. So why, if we want it, would it
- 14:44be not appropriate for God to do it when God is?
- 14:49God is ultimately good. The only one who is good is God.
- 14:52We are not good. So it's just something to think
- 14:55about. I think our minds get a little
- 14:57bit skewed sometimes and we don't think through what it
- 15:02scripture actually says or who God is.
- 15:05The inhabited towns will be laid waste and the land will be
- 15:08desolate. Then you will know that I am the
- 15:11Lord. Sometimes God has to level us.
- 15:14He has to just like wipe out everything so that we can see
- 15:18that it's not all about us. God is there and when we are
- 15:22rebellious, sometimes the levelling is a little bit he
- 15:26ever quite. He might require a little bit
- 15:29more to do to us when we're really rebellion rebelling,
- 15:35there will be no delay. The word of the Lord came to me,
- 15:38Son of man, this is, this is wait, son of man, what is this
- 15:44proverb you have? In the land of Israel the days
- 15:47go by and every vision comes to nothing.
- 15:51Say to them, this is what the sovereign Lord says.
- 15:54I'm going to put an end to this proverb and they will no longer
- 15:59quote it in Israel. Say to them, the days are near
- 16:03when every vision will be fulfilled, for there will be no
- 16:08more. False visions are flattering
- 16:11divinations among the people of Israel.
- 16:13But I, the Lord, will speak what I will, and it shall be
- 16:18fulfilled without delay. For in your days, you rebellious
- 16:23people, I will fulfill whatever I say, declares the sovereign
- 16:28Lord. The word of the Lord came to me.
- 16:32Son of Man, the Israelites are saying the vision he sees is for
- 16:36many years from now, and he prophecies about a distant
- 16:40future. Therefore say to them, this is
- 16:44what the sovereign Lord says. None of my words will be delayed
- 16:47any longer. Whatever I say will be
- 16:49fulfilled, declares the Sovereign Lord.
- 16:52Now that's chapter 12, the end of it.
- 16:55And so God finally had enough with people.
- 16:58If he did it once before, is he going to probably do it again?
- 17:03Because there's still unfulfilled prophecy.
- 17:06And at some point God's going to say, OK, time, time for it to
- 17:11all be fulfilled. And so we need to be watch, we
- 17:16need to be prepared. Ultimately, we need to have our
- 17:19relationship right with God. We need the Holy Spirit.
- 17:23And you know, we obviously need to be grateful to Jesus that he
- 17:29made the way for us. Let's see so the questions from
- 17:35the study Bible How did people pack their things for exile?
- 17:39They travelled light invading armies, plundered valuables and
- 17:43destroyed nearly everything. So a sack or bundle filled with
- 17:46travel essentials was all was about all the people could pack
- 17:49for a long enforced March to the place of exile.
- 17:53God commanded Ezekiel to perform this drama at 2 busy times early
- 17:57in the day and in the evening. By doing so, the maximum number
- 18:01of people saw him. While some were offended by his
- 18:05enacted prophecy, others were frightened by what it meant.
- 18:10How did digging through a wall symbolize exile?
- 18:15Actually, I'm going to go back to it says, you know that one
- 18:18statement. While some were offended by his
- 18:21enacted prophecy, others were frightened by what it meant.
- 18:25So what do you think happens to people?
- 18:28They there's two different responses to these kinds of
- 18:33messages. They're either like, I don't
- 18:35want to hear it. That's just awful bad news.
- 18:38And you know, I'm just walking away from this.
- 18:40I'm not going to listen to it. So those are the offended people
- 18:43and they don't want anything to do with it.
- 18:45But yet it's still going to come.
- 18:48It's just foolishness. But then there's others who are
- 18:50frightened by it because they're, they're frightened
- 18:54because they don't have the Holy Spirit.
- 18:57They have a fear of God. They've seen what God can do and
- 19:02this is actually good because that may cause them to turn from
- 19:09their ways. You know, it, if they were, if
- 19:13they were wise, that's what they would do is say, because
- 19:17throughout the Bible, it always says if they would repent and
- 19:21turn to me and, and they're, you know, even, I guess it was maybe
- 19:26David, who God gave him multiple options of you know what his,
- 19:33what would come next as a result of his sin.
- 19:36And he gave him like 3 different options.
- 19:38I can't really remember what they are right now, but one of
- 19:41them. Well, anyway, what, what David
- 19:43chose was, I'm going to choose what you would do to me because
- 19:48you have mercy. Like he, he chose God providing
- 19:53the punishment rather than man because he knows that God is
- 19:57merciful and, and people are not.
- 19:59And so we, you know, learned that about God.
- 20:03Like God has a lot of mercy. So we shouldn't be fearful.
- 20:07I mean, fear is good if it leads us to repentance and if we've
- 20:13repented and we are right with God, there's no reason to fear.
- 20:19And that's how it says like fear.
- 20:21When someone has fear, it's that they have not made been made
- 20:25perfect in love. So.
- 20:28If we're not perfect in love, not perfect as far as what we
- 20:32do, but if we're we haven't experienced the love of God,
- 20:36yes, we'll have fear. Or if we know that we're living
- 20:40in rebellion against God, yes, we'll have fear.
- 20:43But if we're not in clear conscience, living against God,
- 20:50there is nothing to fear. So how did digging through a
- 20:55wall symbolize exile? Ezekiel's action symbolize the
- 20:59way a conquering army systematically broke through the
- 21:02walls protecting a city. See Amos 43 for a similar
- 21:06prediction. So why did the Prince cover his
- 21:10face? Covering one's face was a sign
- 21:12of grief and humiliation, but in this case, the covering might
- 21:19have been something Zedekiah wore to disguise himself during
- 21:22his escape attempt. It's also possible, since the
- 21:25Babylonians put out his eyes, that this was a metaphor for his
- 21:29blindness. And who knows, maybe he actually
- 21:32had like a bandana around his head because his eyes were
- 21:36gouged out. I mean, there could be a lot of
- 21:38different things, but it is interesting that there are these
- 21:42metaphors, I guess, of covering one's face as a sign of grief
- 21:47and humiliation. Why wouldn't he see the place
- 21:52where they took him though? The Babylonians took the king as
- 21:56a captive to their own country. They blinded him before he made
- 21:59the journey. That would not be a fun way to
- 22:02walk to a foreign land. And considering the times that
- 22:07they were in, Can you imagine like stumbling over rocks or I
- 22:11don't know if it's sand or you wouldn't see anything.
- 22:14You were completely 100% relying on whoever was leading you, and
- 22:19you probably would have a genuine fear that whoever was
- 22:23leading you did not have your best interest in hand.
- 22:26So there were probably a lot of stumbles and falls along the way
- 22:30than a lot of things that you would run into because the
- 22:32person leading you probably did not care one bit about you.
- 22:35So that would be a horrible way to end your life like that.
- 22:40No chance of recovery from that. But that is, you know, the
- 22:44punishment that Zedekiah was apparently justified in
- 22:50receiving by God for his actions.
- 22:55Had the Israelites stopped believing in prophecies?
- 22:58The Israelites had grown accustomed to hearing the quote
- 23:01professional prophets proclaims that all would be well.
- 23:05Thus they were skeptical when they heard Ezekiel's grim
- 23:09message. I could understand that too,
- 23:12because God had always been with Israel, had always protected
- 23:16them. Had, you know, they had these
- 23:19huge successes over other nations that would come against
- 23:26them when it didn't seem like it was possible.
- 23:29They had the all of these miraculous things happening.
- 23:32So I could see like historically how they would always feel like
- 23:35God is with us. Everything we do, God is with
- 23:38us. But if they paid attention or if
- 23:44they yeah, if they listen to everything God said, he always,
- 23:48he gave them back at in Moses time, he gave them blessings and
- 23:54curses. He said blessings if you do
- 23:57these things, curses if you do these things.
- 24:00And so did they pay attention to that part because you can't just
- 24:04take the good stuff and say God is always good to us.
- 24:07God always does good things because he's, he has justice and
- 24:13he has righteousness and he wants, I mean, there's not going
- 24:16to be evil in God's Kingdom. And that's something we can all
- 24:20be like looking forward to because I don't think most of us
- 24:25enjoy anything evil. We would prefer if we had no
- 24:29evil evil to deal with and no sickness, no, no death, no
- 24:33dying, no hardships, all those things.
- 24:36And that's the way God's Kingdom is going to be.
- 24:39And I mean, it's, it just sounds like an amazing place that is
- 24:45hard to imagine just because all we've ever experienced is a
- 24:49mixture of good and evil in our lives today.
- 24:52But just think about all the things that bring anxiety,
- 24:56distress, sadness, grief, mourning.
- 24:59All that stuff's going to be gone in God's Kingdom and God's,
- 25:03God's going through the people like who, who want, you know, I
- 25:08guess, who is, who humbles themselves and repents of their
- 25:15evil ways, who's willing to do that to be in my Kingdom and
- 25:21who's willing to serve me. Because Jesus is going to be the
- 25:25king when he returns and he's going to rule from Jerusalem,
- 25:30That means he's going to have authority and we are going to
- 25:34respond to him. And we are under His leadership,
- 25:39so we need to submit to him. Like, are we willing to do that?
- 25:42Some people just are not willing to submit to anyone.
- 25:46But foolishly, they don't realize that if you, I mean, we
- 25:52are either in slavery under God's enemy, or we can submit to
- 25:58God's rules and be protected by Him.
- 26:01So that's our choice basically. But the problem is a lot of
- 26:05people don't realize that they are in slavery because of what
- 26:09happened in slavery by the evil one.
- 26:11That's why we have natural sinful desires.
- 26:16That's why it's all about, you know, a little toddler will, you
- 26:20know, everything's about me, me, me as a toddler, because that's
- 26:26just evidence of our sinful ways.
- 26:28Like selfishness is not God. God is, is like selfless.
- 26:35And the difference, I mean, it's it just seems like it makes it
- 26:40really simple. If you think if it's selfish,
- 26:42it's probably sinful. If it's for others, it's more
- 26:46godly. And so that's, I don't know, I'm
- 26:51going to end that part of it there.
- 26:53So let's see what else is there in the questions and answers.
- 26:59OK, what? What were these false visions
- 27:03and flattering divinations? These were reassuring prophecies
- 27:07giving given by false prophets and leaders through God's.
- 27:13Though God's true prophets warned of judgment and
- 27:17destruction, others insisted all would be well.
- 27:21That's the end of the questions and answers for chapter 12.
- 27:23So I'll end it here. And I hope you subscribe if you
- 27:27want to stay in the Word every day, and we'll do a chapter a
- 27:30day for most days when I can. So thank you for being here.
- 27:37And please share this if you think someone else would benefit
- 27:40from it.
