- 0:00Speaker 1: Week Day's sweet A seven pm A flash Drive with
- 0:04Speaker 1: Karl we See on KFM ninety four point five.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Taylor Jenniko, Welcome to the flash Drive in KFM ninety
- 0:10Speaker 2: four point five.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so nice to chat to you, because you
- 0:16Speaker 2: know what, when I hear a story, usually I'll do
- 0:18Speaker 2: it like a whole news But today I give a
- 0:20Speaker 2: couple of stories of the stories that I found of
- 0:22Speaker 2: the day on the show. But when I saw your story,
- 0:24Speaker 2: I was like, no, man, I can't do it justice.
- 0:27Speaker 2: You need to come in and have a conversation with me.
- 0:29Speaker 2: And I'm so grateful that you came through the traffic
- 0:32Speaker 2: from Mitchell's Plain to Greenpoint to come and share your story.
- 0:35Speaker 2: So thank you for being here.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Thank you all the way from the United States. Of
- 0:38Speaker 3: Mitchell's Play.
- 0:39Speaker 2: That is a very aserts a property. Which area and
- 0:42Speaker 2: mitchells Plain are you from?
- 0:44Speaker 1: Are?
- 0:44Speaker 2: There are thousands of areas. I realized my like my
- 0:47Speaker 2: Auntie stays in Montrose Park. Oh wow, have you heard
- 0:50Speaker 2: of Montre's Park?
- 0:51Speaker 3: Sounds for near to Mandalay, Yes, yes, yes.
- 0:55Speaker 2: By Roccolans, by Stanfontet, near to East Ridge and West
- 0:59Speaker 2: ridge can.
- 1:00Speaker 3: There's no such thing as Yeah, I could see what
- 1:04Speaker 3: you were trying.
- 1:07Speaker 2: But okay, So to get down to the story. I
- 1:10Speaker 2: read the story about you doing something that was such
- 1:14Speaker 2: a beautiful display of support for someone in your life
- 1:19Speaker 2: who has been bullied. And I know you yourself have
- 1:22Speaker 2: been bullied as well, but you want to really take action.
- 1:24Speaker 2: So just give us a bit of the story behind
- 1:27Speaker 2: what is an organization that you've started now and also
- 1:31Speaker 2: what this bold move is going to be from the
- 1:32Speaker 2: twenty fourth to the twenty sixth of August, which I
- 1:35Speaker 2: am so excited about. But let's start.
- 1:37Speaker 3: It's forty two Unbreakable, Breakable, and I'm wearing the merch today.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Love it.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I've got the crew neck on. So forty two Unbreakable
- 1:45Speaker 3: is an anti bullying organization founded by my sister, Salita Jenniker. Yes,
- 1:51Speaker 3: she was bullied by forty two children in a class
- 1:54Speaker 3: for three years and it was devastating. As an elder,
- 1:59Speaker 3: sister broke my heart and I could see the pain,
- 2:04Speaker 3: the torment, and just like my sister started changing. You know,
- 2:08Speaker 3: she was an age student and then her grades dropped.
- 2:12Speaker 3: In high school, she was the life of the party,
- 2:15Speaker 3: a bubbly soul, and then all of a sudden she
- 2:18Speaker 3: starts isolating herself, hiding herself away in the neighbour's yard,
- 2:24Speaker 3: and the neighbor actually came and told my dad and
- 2:27Speaker 3: my mother that do you know your daughter was actually
- 2:29Speaker 3: in my yard and she didn't go to school that day.
- 2:32Speaker 3: That's how bad the bullying was for Salita. So it
- 2:36Speaker 3: was heartbreaking, but thank God, she turned a pain into purpose.
- 2:40Speaker 3: And yo, we are today going across the Western Cape
- 2:44Speaker 3: visiting various schools and sharing a message of hope, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 3: and courage and saying that yes, we have been through
- 2:52Speaker 3: the pain as a family, but we came out stronger
- 2:55Speaker 3: and we had to save as many lives as possible.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I've been part of many anti bullying campaigns, and this
- 3:03Speaker 2: is one that I want to get behind, by the way,
- 3:05Speaker 2: but we'll chat about that later. But I found that
- 3:08Speaker 2: going to these schools, et cetera, it's really a three sixty.
- 3:11Speaker 2: It's not just about the children who are victims of bullying.
- 3:15Speaker 2: It's not just about the bullies, not just about the
- 3:18Speaker 2: parents of the children who are bullied and the bullie
- 3:20Speaker 2: parents and the teachers. There's an entire system there that
- 3:23Speaker 2: I found has so many emotional intelligence flaws to it. Absolutely,
- 3:28Speaker 2: and that's why I love organizations such as yours. So
- 3:31Speaker 2: when you do your thing and go to these schools,
- 3:34Speaker 2: what is the general message that you want to share
- 3:36Speaker 2: in these assemblies, in these classrooms when you go visit
- 3:39Speaker 2: these schools.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Look, more than three point two million children are bullied
- 3:43Speaker 3: yearly in South Africa. Sixty seven percent of those learners
- 3:47Speaker 3: refuse to tell a teacher because they feel like there's
- 3:50Speaker 3: nothing that the teacher can do about the situation, you know,
- 3:54Speaker 3: and one hundred and sixty thousand learners bunk school daily
- 3:59Speaker 3: to avoid being bullied. One out of ten children drop
- 4:03Speaker 3: out of school due to being bullied. So I share
- 4:07Speaker 3: those stats because I want South Africa and I want
- 4:09Speaker 3: this nation to realize how tough bullying is. You know,
- 4:14Speaker 3: how serious and how sensitive it is. You know, I myself,
- 4:18Speaker 3: I've been bullied, I've been body shamed. Like I said
- 4:21Speaker 3: before the interview, I've been bullied for my deep voice.
- 4:24Speaker 3: And look, you just told me I've got a radio voice.
- 4:27Speaker 3: You do radio Thanks you so much for the compliment.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Called so a terrible man, and we are forty two
- 4:34Speaker 3: unbreakable We've got a mission, and that mission is to
- 4:37Speaker 3: eradicate bullying in our South African schools. You know, the
- 4:41Speaker 3: mission is to go all over South Africa. But I
- 4:44Speaker 3: decided to start in Mitchell's playing h in my community.
- 4:48Speaker 2: And when you say start, you hit the ground running
- 4:50Speaker 2: absolutely literally. You are going to run to forty two schools.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Yeah are you? Are you all right?
- 4:56Speaker 3: I'm American runner, I'm all right. Okay, just got back
- 5:00Speaker 3: from training.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Okay, good, Yes, I did.
- 5:03Speaker 3: My last thirteen schools today.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Okay, So how does this work? Twenty four to twenty six?
- 5:08Speaker 2: Tell me what the mornings into the afternoons are gonna
- 5:11Speaker 2: look like for you. I mean, you've got your gear on,
- 5:13Speaker 2: you got your merch on, and then you're gonna put
- 5:15Speaker 2: your techis on and you're gonna hoo it.
- 5:16Speaker 3: You're gonna go to this film actually running in school clothes.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Oh wow, school uniform.
- 5:21Speaker 2: So you're running in school uniform. Yes, people need to
- 5:24Speaker 2: know about this as well, just so that the authorities
- 5:26Speaker 2: are not gonna stop you and say, oh, you're right,
- 5:28Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Yeah? Yeah, So that's gonna
- 5:30Speaker 2: be very important. I'm glad that they are listening, don't worry.
- 5:32Speaker 2: So are you going to run to these schools? Are
- 5:34Speaker 2: you gonna run and stop at these schools?
- 5:36Speaker 3: Yes, I am.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And you're going to say, hey, I want to chat
- 5:39Speaker 2: to the assembly on a chat to a classroom and
- 5:41Speaker 2: then you're gonna have five minutes there and you're gonna go.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Because forty two schools, it's a lot to get through.
- 5:45Speaker 3: It's a lot to get through, and that's why I
- 5:47Speaker 3: decided to do it within the course of over three days. Okay,
- 5:50Speaker 3: So I kicked sort at my primary school, which is
- 5:53Speaker 3: Highlands Primary on the twenty fourth it's Monday morning at
- 5:57Speaker 3: eight am, and then obviously head over to different schools,
- 6:01Speaker 3: which is going to be in total fourteen schools right
- 6:05Speaker 3: then the next day it's fifteen, and then the next
- 6:07Speaker 3: day it's thirteen.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Can people run with you? Absolutely? Yesty to have a group? Yes.
- 6:15Speaker 3: The Deputy mayor called me yesterday really okay Andrews and
- 6:18Speaker 3: he's like, Kayla, I need to join you, And I
- 6:20Speaker 3: was like, okay, what about Jordan get into Yeah, you
- 6:24Speaker 3: can run to run with me as well.
- 6:25Speaker 2: If you can run a city, you can run a marathona. Absolutely.
- 6:28Speaker 3: So there are various people even in my running club.
- 6:31Speaker 3: These people that that's willing to run with me.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I feel like they should run with you. We should
- 6:35Speaker 2: because that's solidarity in the most beautiful way and spreading
- 6:38Speaker 2: that message. But to go back to the messages, So
- 6:41Speaker 2: in my experience going to these schools, what I find
- 6:43Speaker 2: is that the bullying is a value problem. When I
- 6:46Speaker 2: say that is that when you recognize a certain thing
- 6:50Speaker 2: in yourself and you feel like it's not enough, what
- 6:52Speaker 2: you go do? You go rip it from other people.
- 6:54Speaker 2: That's from a bully perspective. The individuals who are bullied,
- 6:58Speaker 2: you can try and let it go off the back,
- 7:00Speaker 2: but it's very difficult if you're a young person to
- 7:03Speaker 2: not internalize what you are receiving, which is another problem.
- 7:06Speaker 2: And then of course, as parents, every one of our
- 7:09Speaker 2: children with the Golden Children, you know just like, oh,
- 7:13Speaker 2: they just misunderstood. But we need to be a bit
- 7:15Speaker 2: more focused on that. Plus, we have social media bullying,
- 7:18Speaker 2: which I mean the stats on that are probably even
- 7:21Speaker 2: more severe than we see. So we've got so many
- 7:23Speaker 2: facets to look out for. And I hope that this
- 7:25Speaker 2: is the beginning, This is going to be the start
- 7:27Speaker 2: of running something that continues to go fully. Two unbreakable.
- 7:32Speaker 2: It needs to be unstoppable. Absolutely, this message must go
- 7:35Speaker 2: to every single school. We need to find people who
- 7:38Speaker 2: can ensure that we are I'm going to say even
- 7:42Speaker 2: the Boddy system of having other students being part of
- 7:44Speaker 2: it as well, and if they recognize bullying, making sure
- 7:48Speaker 2: that they are the ones where the buck stops putting,
- 7:51Speaker 2: you know, instead of Because I was part of this
- 7:52Speaker 2: campaign called raise your Voice, not your Phone, because there
- 7:56Speaker 2: are a lot of people who witness bullying, they witnessed
- 7:58Speaker 2: the fights in the school, but they don't do anything
- 8:01Speaker 2: about it. We have to create active citizenship in that
- 8:04Speaker 2: way as well, and you and your organization has a
- 8:07Speaker 2: very strong power to do that.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Well, thank you so much. Cale. You know, I'm glad
- 8:12Speaker 3: that you mentioned that those are called bystanders. Yeah, the
- 8:16Speaker 3: ones that takes out their phone and they start recording
- 8:18Speaker 3: an incident and they don't even go to a teacher
- 8:22Speaker 3: and tell the teacher, look, there's a fight that's happening,
- 8:24Speaker 3: try and stop the fight. No, they take out their
- 8:26Speaker 3: phone because this is happening in the colored community. Our learners,
- 8:31Speaker 3: they've become very passionate about violence. It's entertainment for them.
- 8:35Speaker 3: So what they do is they take out and they
- 8:37Speaker 3: say slat for her of scot Form because this is
- 8:41Speaker 3: what we used to look. We come out of communities
- 8:44Speaker 3: right where we see violence on a daily basis. I'm
- 8:47Speaker 3: from Mitchel's plan. I know there's gangsterism, crime and things
- 8:51Speaker 3: that children gets exposed to that they're not supposed to
- 8:54Speaker 3: get exposed to. So I'm just running to these schools
- 8:58Speaker 3: because our one people. I want them to know that
- 9:02Speaker 3: it's not where they come from. That's where they're going
- 9:06Speaker 3: and what they're experiencing at home and in their households
- 9:09Speaker 3: and communities. They shouldn't go to school with that mindset
- 9:13Speaker 3: of I'm just going to be cruel to someone today,
- 9:15Speaker 3: like I'm going to break that, you know, And that
- 9:18Speaker 3: is what my mission is to tell children. Listen here,
- 9:22Speaker 3: don't come with your household issues and take it out
- 9:25Speaker 3: on someone at school. Because if I need to go deeper,
- 9:28Speaker 3: I will. I was bullied by someone that was sexually
- 9:30Speaker 3: assaulted by your own brother, and she apologized to me
- 9:34Speaker 3: in metric I'm talking about. This was in twenty fourteen.
- 9:39Speaker 3: She said, Kayla, I apologize for bullying you, but because
- 9:42Speaker 3: of my household issues and where I'm coming from and
- 9:45Speaker 3: what has been happening. This is the reason why I,
- 9:50Speaker 3: you know, just bullied you to out all my things
- 9:52Speaker 3: that I'm going through at home out on you. So
- 9:54Speaker 3: I'm trying to stop that as well.
- 9:56Speaker 2: That value system that if we can create a generation
- 10:02Speaker 2: of individuals who draw their value not from their followers
- 10:05Speaker 2: and the responses, never mind responses, reactions from where they
- 10:10Speaker 2: place their content or where they do their thing. If
- 10:13Speaker 2: we create people who are self sufficient in recognizing their
- 10:18Speaker 2: own value, that's how we create citizens who will not
- 10:23Speaker 2: need to try and go draw value from other places
- 10:26Speaker 2: because it exists in them. That's why you were chosen,
- 10:29Speaker 2: That's why you were born. Think about that. Everybody has
- 10:32Speaker 2: a purpose on this planet. We don't need to take
- 10:34Speaker 2: from anybody else's purpose. We have our own. Otherwise we
- 10:37Speaker 2: would not be here. We were birth into this world
- 10:40Speaker 2: and no matter what the circumstances, we were birth into
- 10:42Speaker 2: this world for purpose. And I think the journey is
- 10:45Speaker 2: finding that purpose, but not allowing anybody around you to
- 10:50Speaker 2: stray from that purpose. You need to know it's there,
- 10:52Speaker 2: It's exists in you. And that's why when people focus
- 10:54Speaker 2: on their phone so much, I tell them focus on
- 10:57Speaker 2: the screen that matters the mirror. There's so much value
- 11:00Speaker 2: you there, you just have to see it. And this
- 11:03Speaker 2: is why I was so when I saw your story.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I was so bad because this is up my alley.
- 11:06Speaker 2: That's something that I've been chatting to a lot of
- 11:09Speaker 2: schools about as well, because when these bully victims they
- 11:12Speaker 2: are faced with something which is I either internalize or
- 11:17Speaker 2: I completely go reclose, and I start making sure that
- 11:22Speaker 2: my personality is not too big so I don't And
- 11:25Speaker 2: it's such a sad thing to watch. As you mentioned
- 11:27Speaker 2: about your sister. What we should be doing is ensuring
- 11:30Speaker 2: and encouraging people that there's value inside them, and that
- 11:33Speaker 2: value is something that no one can take away from you,
- 11:35Speaker 2: but people around you can actually accentuate that can build
- 11:39Speaker 2: you up. And that's what we need to do. And
- 11:42Speaker 2: also to any bully victim as well, we need to
- 11:44Speaker 2: chat to them because they are facing it now. Yeah,
- 11:47Speaker 2: And my common response is always I think that bullies
- 11:51Speaker 2: they highlight your usp all the time, your unique selling point.
- 11:54Speaker 2: When people said you're wasted, why are you so short?
- 11:57Speaker 2: My shortness is a unique selling point and there's no
- 12:01Speaker 2: one like me on the planet. My ears are a
- 12:04Speaker 2: little bigger. Yeah. Oh my word, there's no one like
- 12:07Speaker 2: me on the planets. It's my ears. It's beautiful, it's
- 12:10Speaker 2: lovely and yes, and that's why I just think that
- 12:13Speaker 2: it's those things that bullies point out. Yeah, they see
- 12:17Speaker 2: value in what they ridicule, and that's the issue. So
- 12:21Speaker 2: you should see the value in what they are trying
- 12:24Speaker 2: to ridicule, because there's value there.
- 12:25Speaker 3: I always say this call being different or being weird
- 12:29Speaker 3: is beautiful. That's a superpower. Yeah, you know, So embrace
- 12:34Speaker 3: your ear that God has given you. Embrace your nose.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You know, I was being bullied on school for having
- 12:40Speaker 3: skinny legs. But it's the same legs that I was
- 12:43Speaker 3: being bullied for that I'll be running to the forty
- 12:46Speaker 3: two schools too. The very thing that you get attacked on, yep,
- 12:50Speaker 3: is the very thing God uses in life.
- 12:53Speaker 2: This is where you use that term steak PENI you
- 12:55Speaker 2: understand what I'm saying.
- 12:56Speaker 3: You know what. I've been an anti bullying activists for
- 12:58Speaker 3: the past nine years. Yeah, but I'm not limited to that.
- 13:02Speaker 3: I refuse to box myself. I've founded Kay Leader's Modeling
- 13:05Speaker 3: School with my sister Salita in Mitchell's Plain. The first
- 13:09Speaker 3: modeling school owned by women of color.
- 13:12Speaker 2: How beautiful is that story about being ridiculed for the
- 13:15Speaker 2: way you look to owning a modeling school. Yes, that
- 13:18Speaker 2: is essentially seeing value.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Absolutely, And you know what, we were trying to break
- 13:23Speaker 3: the stigma man, trying to say that you don't need
- 13:27Speaker 3: to look a certain way to make it in life.
- 13:30Speaker 3: You can embrace what God has blessed you with and
- 13:33Speaker 3: what He's given you with. And that is what I
- 13:35Speaker 3: always share with children on school. Embrace who you are.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Are you sure it's a modeling school? Is it a
- 13:40Speaker 2: role modeling school?
- 13:41Speaker 3: Both?
- 13:42Speaker 2: I think it is a role but I feel like
- 13:44Speaker 2: it's a role modeling school both. You know, I feel
- 13:46Speaker 2: like that because you're creating role models so that those
- 13:49Speaker 2: individuals who are part of it can go into their
- 13:51Speaker 2: communities and their friends circles and share this message. Now absolutely,
- 13:55Speaker 2: All I want to do is just wish you that,
- 13:56Speaker 2: wish you luck, hydration, protection and all the blessings when
- 14:01Speaker 2: you do this between twenty four and twenty six August.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I also want to highlight the fact that you have
- 14:06Speaker 2: a backup body page, because the thing is you need
- 14:08Speaker 2: support of this. Yes, so let's have a conversation about
- 14:11Speaker 2: the Backup Buddy page and why you started it.
- 14:13Speaker 3: I started this because currently my family and I are
- 14:16Speaker 3: doing it from our own pockets, so we self funded,
- 14:20Speaker 3: and it's been tough. You know, me and my sister
- 14:22Speaker 3: we do modeling and we were in the entertainment industry.
- 14:26Speaker 3: But it's been it's been a battle. Look, our resources
- 14:28Speaker 3: are very limited and there's so much that we want
- 14:31Speaker 3: to do on school, you know, we want to leave
- 14:33Speaker 3: kids with a meal, We want to leave them with
- 14:35Speaker 3: something tangible, give them a backpack with booklets in create
- 14:40Speaker 3: them a nice badge with our slogan, don't be a bully,
- 14:43Speaker 3: be a bra. But we that's our slogan, ag that's
- 14:47Speaker 3: so cool, aid so much, so cool. And we can't
- 14:50Speaker 3: do that because of the lack of resources, you know.
- 14:53Speaker 3: And we call in on small to medium and corporate
- 14:57Speaker 3: companies to collaborate with us and to help make a
- 15:00Speaker 3: tangible difference. Yes, you know. So we've only got one
- 15:04Speaker 3: point two two hundred on our back of Buddy and
- 15:07Speaker 3: the goal was today's one hundred thousand roe.
- 15:10Speaker 2: By when give me give me the you know, you
- 15:15Speaker 2: set me a target because I know that there are
- 15:16Speaker 2: many people who listen to this show. Yeah, I'm talking
- 15:19Speaker 2: about CEOs who were bullied themselves. Yes, who have a
- 15:22Speaker 2: story to tell those individuals. Yeah, I know for a
- 15:25Speaker 2: fact we'll support you. I know that there are several
- 15:27Speaker 2: companies who will step forward. They are individuals, they are
- 15:31Speaker 2: community leaders that will step forward because the reality is
- 15:34Speaker 2: we've all received some sort of bullying in our time,
- 15:37Speaker 2: and if it's made you feel like someone has tried
- 15:40Speaker 2: to take their value away, maybe the chance to give
- 15:44Speaker 2: value to your community is backing this. And I think
- 15:47Speaker 2: this is the opportunity right here. How do we find
- 15:49Speaker 2: the back of buddy page? What is it called?
- 15:51Speaker 3: So on kaylor on Kayla Jennicker on social media TikTok,
- 15:56Speaker 3: Facebook and Instagram. I am Kayla Jenniker. They can head
- 16:00Speaker 3: over to the link in my bio, the campaign link
- 16:03Speaker 3: and make a contribution.
- 16:05Speaker 2: We will get that link as well. So anybody who
- 16:07Speaker 2: WhatsApps in we're going to send you the link directly
- 16:09Speaker 2: if you would like to make a contribution on zero
- 16:11Speaker 2: two nine four five zero nine four zero and Jennicker's
- 16:14Speaker 2: spout je n E c K E R correct all right,
- 16:19Speaker 2: Jennicka and Kayla is k A Y i'l age just
- 16:23Speaker 2: to let you know if you want to go find it,
- 16:24Speaker 2: but if you'd like the link, we're going to send
- 16:26Speaker 2: it to you directly. Kaylor, you are the epitome of
- 16:30Speaker 2: a woman that I want to see lead in communities
- 16:33Speaker 2: in Cape Town and South Africa. Honesty. Thank you, because
