[jazzy music] Weekly Dose of Fat, show number 92 for Friday, February 5th, 2016.
• 0:23
As you can see, five kilowatt carbon life forms, this is the Weekly Dose of Fat. It's my pleasure to introduce the one and only
• 0:38
Sven Hammer back for his 92nd consecutive address to the nation. And back from an endless jacuzzi surfing at the Fat Bike Worlds in Crested Butte, Colorado,
• 0:54
it's Uncle Gomez. Try to get this one right. Hey, everybody, welcome to the show. Welcome to the show. You know, the best way to listen to the Weekly Dose of Fat is put us in your ears while you go for a ride.
• 1:11
Yeah, you can do that. And, uh, you could get the dulcet tones of Mr. JK Livin coming through your, uh, earbuds. Whoa. How about I give you the finger and you give me my phone call?
• 1:27
[laughs] Hey, Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat is sponsored by Surly Bikes. Learn more at surlybikes.com. Whoa. [laughs] What do we have on the show tonight, JK? We start the show with the event of the week.
• 1:42
We welcome the newly crowned, but not branded, Fat Bike World Champion, Sir Robert Squire.
• 1:49
We welcome listeners from around the fatosphere to answer the question: how do you keep your hands warm while fat biking in the cold? We check in with the Fatty Farm field report brought to you by
• 2:02
the Winter Rush Fat Bike Series, the Michigan State Fat Bike Championships, and the 2017 USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships.
• 2:11
And in this evening's special segment, we speak with representatives from Revolution Cycles about their women's fat bike demo with those cool cats from the intergalactic Surly World Regional Headquarters.
• 2:25
And now it's time for the Fat Bike Event of the Week. And this week it's Narborg. Yeah, Narborg. Race number four of the Winter Rush Fat Bike Series, and, uh, we have Mr. Nate Phelps on the line. How you doing, Nate?
• 2:42
Hey, good, man. How are you? Doing great. Hey, Nate. Hey. Go- Gomez thought it would be a good idea since you're, uh, since you're helping to sponsor this show, for you to tell us, uh, tell us about your races and stuff.
• 2:55
Yeah, we have questions. We have probing questions about, uh, about the format.
• 3:00
I was looking at the old website there, and so do you, do you run this like a cyclocross race where you rage for 30 minutes and then you shoot the gun off or ring the bell for the bell lap, and then you race for one more lap?
• 3:13
Is that how it goes? Absolutely, yep. We started out doing it that way mostly by accident. Mm-hmm. [laughs] Um,
• 3:23
just 'cause when I started doing it five years ago, we were kind of like, uh, my partner at the time, we were like, "Well, how do we do this? We'll do it this way," and so we just, I've just stuck with it. Oh, cool.
• 3:34
And it's, you know, it's kind of a fury of, uh, of, uh, athleticism and, uh, pretty, uh- People can really just go, like, sprint for 30 minutes. I, I d- Yeah, absolutely...
• 3:49
I think that you should have a class, like, for old fat guys like me, like, maybe it'd be like eight minutes. [laughs] Eight- Multiple eight-minute races... or maybe just one lap and then one lap for all the money.
• 4:00
[laughs] Are there, do you have, do you have mult- uh, man- Do you remember how your gold sprints went in- Ah... in Las Vegas? [laughs] I didn't lose by that much, did I? Or maybe I did, I don't know. Yeah.
• 4:10
Gold sprints on fat bikes, ladies and gentlemen. It was, it was interesting. Yes, Sven totally conquered me. You know what's more interesting? What? Narborg, race number four- Narborg... in Winter Rush Fat Bike Series.
• 4:22
[laughs] So Nate is down there at CABDA. I'm headed down there tomorrow. That's the Chicago Area Bicycle Dealers Association, or maybe, I don't, I might have have the A right. Am I right there, Nate? Or do you know?
• 4:35
Uh, yeah, I think it's association. It's kind of, it's been a good show. We just came in today. Are you gonna be down there tomorrow? And now there's a couple of... Yeah, I am, yeah. All right.
• 4:45
Well, you'll smell me- Um-... before you see me. [laughs] Most likely. Hey, com- compare, compare and contrast the CABDA show with the Interbike show. [laughs] Pheasant Run?
• 4:57
Oh, it's, maybe it's about- Or Ankeny, maybe... the size. Yeah. Yeah, same format, but, you know, quite smaller. And I, I think it's awesome for the Midwest. Yeah.
• 5:07
It, um, I- It's a good time of year for sure to have it, you know, leading into the season rather than- Yeah... at the end of the season. So Nate, did you see Blackburn there? I,
• 5:19
gosh, I d- I didn't make the whole, make the whole, uh, um, floor today. Um- I'm gonna be on the look for their-... I don't know if I saw Blackburn or not...
• 5:26
their gear, 'cause they have some racks that just make me go schwing. Yeah, Atomic's got some wheels. Oh, yeah. You wanna take a look at those Atomic carbon wheels. Oh, yeah. There's some stuff that is- Yep...
• 5:36
kind of new for fat bikers coming. You know, that show used to be- They're, they're-... a lot bigger. Uh, maybe it'll get big again. It used to be at the Rosemont back in the day. Yeah. Yeah.
• 5:45
I worked many, I worked many of those after a 7:00 AM arrival back at the hotel from the night before out on Rush Street and whatnot.
• 5:52
[laughs] I tried to sneak in once in Pheasant Run and, uh, ran into Greg Airbolt and met him. He's a pretty cool cat. Oh, right on. He's super friendly. So Nate, how much have you had to drink?
• 6:04
You said, "Hey, uh, I'm gonna be a cab driver, so, uh, is it okay if I'm, I'm half in the bag?" Are you, are you- Yeah, well, I'm working on it... are you feeling no pain? Are you working on it? That's a plus.
• 6:13
I'm working on it, yeah. Plus, the cold meds are helping out a lot. [laughs] All right, nothing like a little- Speaking of which. [bottles clinking] [laughs] It's the top of the hill, guys. Top of the hill.
• 6:24
Hey, uh, Nate, how many races do you have left in the series? Um, after this Saturday, we just have the state final, um, the following weekend on the 13th.
• 6:35
And, um, we just picked up a new sponsor, um, Bell's Brewing, and, um, so we're gonna- Oh, I love me some Bell's... you know, uh, we're gonna be letting it flow.
• 6:46
So, uh, I'm pretty sure we're, we're gonna be liberal with the, uh, pours. They do the, uh, do they do the Oberon? Is that Bell's? Yep, that's Bell's. Yeah, that's a good one. Yeah.
• 6:54
That's a good, that's a good summer beer. I like that one. Mm. Yeah, it's hard to go wrong with two-hearted. Yep, true that. Yeah, absolutely. Today I've got a Founder's All Day IPA in front of me, [laughs] so does JK.
• 7:07
Oh, good choice. Yeah, good one, good one. I'm drinking tap water and some, uh... JK just laid some- Oh, well-... some Diet Sunkist on me. [laughs] It sounds like code. [laughs] That sounded, that sounded fairly gay.
• 7:24
[laughs] Oh. That wasn't meant to be. Put it right down. Yeah. It is, it is kind of a, a fruity drink, though.
• 7:30
Hey, Nate, um, uh, have you been getting snow during these last couple of, uh, precipitation events, or what's happening with the weather over that way?
• 7:39
Man, we have been getting the rain, not the snow, and that's starting to be a little bit of a concern. And I think this Saturday we're just gonna be racing in the mud. Um, so it surely will be Gnarborg.
• 7:51
Um, but- [laughs] Good name. It is a good name. Yeah, on the... Um, and then for the Arrow of Cupid, it does look like we're gonna have a good snow. Super.
• 8:01
All right, man, well, uh- Well, we have to cut you short- Yeah, kinda... because we just have the world champion of fat biking calling us to chat about, uh, I don't know. Fat Bike Worlds. Fat Bike Worlds. Yeah.
• 8:12
And why he didn't get the brand. Man, it's on the calen- [laughs] We even have to ask. It's like, uh, just, ugh, yeah, branding. So right on. Uh, thanks for calling in, Nate. Hey, man, thanks for having me. All right.
• 8:24
I'll see you tomorrow, bro. Let's take a quick break here before we talk to the new Fat Bike World champion, Mr. Robbie Squire.
• 8:32
[upbeat music] Chumba USA builds innovative, technically superior bicycles that are race-ready, ride-driven, and tested to withstand the harshest conditions and tackle the toughest and roughest terrain.
• 8:48
Learn more about Chumba's American-made Ursa Major at chumbausa.com. [upbeat music] You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Hey, welcome back, everybody.
• 9:06
While we were over break, we got Mr. Robbie Squire on the horn, the winner of the men's Fat Bike World Championships in Crested Butte. Right on. Happy to, happy to be on the show.
• 9:20
Hey, thanks for joining us on the show, Robbie. Yeah, man, that's really cool. I mean, this thing just happened not that long ago. You're the very first Fat Bike World Champion, awarded there in Crested Butte.
• 9:31
Uh, you took a very interesting pathway to winning the Fat Bike Worlds. Why don't you start with a little bit about your bike racing background?
• 9:37
Um, so I started off mountain bike racing, just I got a mountain bike here in Salt Lake and just kind of got into it, racing downhills. Was obsessed with the big jumps, and then got into mountain bike racing.
• 9:48
Then from mountain bike racing, got into road racing, and then kind of in a very odd way to do it, doing some fat biking as well. Yeah, that's cool. Knobby tire, skinny tire, super fat tire.
• 10:01
That's, uh- Yeah, because people told me, "Oh, well, he's just a roadie." So that's not true. Yeah. [laughs] So- No... people also told me that you got that Pivot fat bike right before the race last weekend.
• 10:15
Is that true? Yeah. Well, I, uh, it actually got in about a week earlier, but I was down in San Luis in Argentina racing. Oh, wow.
• 10:22
And so I flew back to Salt Lake, built up that bike from boxes, and then threw it in the car and drove up to Crested Butte. Oh, no way. [laughs] That's amazing.
• 10:32
So, um, so since you put us together, you must know just a little bit about it. Can you tell us, like, what kind of wheels it's running, what kind of drivetrain that, uh, is on the race bike? Yeah.
• 10:41
So it's got a combination of Shimano and... Oh, what is it? It's a Shimano and then a Next crank. I, I was gonna say XTR, XT, and then- That's probably a Race Face Next crank... yeah, probably a Next carbon.
• 10:56
Race Face, yeah. Yeah, there you go. Yeah. That's it. And, uh, this is how I built it up and then literally threw it in the car.
• 11:03
And then the, the cool part about it, though, is the Reynolds, the new carbon Reynolds wheels- Right on, yeah... that were, that I got set up. And so,
• 11:13
I, I mean, as far as something to geek out on, they're double walled and tubeless, and they seem to work pretty all right. [laughs] Yeah.
• 11:23
We have a set of those, uh, in on a test bike that, uh, we've had, uh, I, that I've had, got about three rides in on, so nice, light, strong wheel set. So during the race- Yeah...
• 11:34
I know that, uh, condit- And you were running, uh, you were running a Dilly 5 in the front and a Lou in the back, right? Yeah, that's right.
• 11:43
So during the race, I know that, you know, it was Pisten Bully groomed for the first lap, and, you know, that, that can be a real misnomer. It can, you can have a lot of soft spots underneath that grooming.
• 11:55
But as the laps started to pile up, that grooming started to really get mashed potato-ish.
• 12:02
Can you tell us how maybe that all worked into the tactics of the race, and give us maybe your play-by-play of how, how it all worked out in- Yeah... your win?
• 12:12
So the first lap was kind of pretty much almost like a standard little road bike race. On the first climb, uh, one of the guys went hard and that thinned the group.
• 12:20
And then, you know, like going into the descent, I jumped in the front because I didn't want to be stuck behind anybody. I thought I was the better bike handler.
• 12:29
[laughs] And it was kind of like everyone was setting into a pace, watching each other, kind of worried about saving energy and all that nonsense.
• 12:36
[laughs] And then once, uh, once we got behind lap traffic, it was more like riding a six-mile sandpit that you just had to be really loose on your bike.
• 12:46
And then it was more fun, too, because everybody started crashing- Mm-hmm... on the second lap with all the ruts created by our traffic and lap traffic. Yeah, very cool.
• 12:57
So you actually kind of were in an elite group in the first few laps. Which lap was it when you broke free from Taylor and, uh- Uh, Travis? And Travis. Yeah.
• 13:10
Yeah, so that was on the fourth lap, or I guess the third lap going into the fourth, is, uh, Travis crashed.
• 13:19
And then it's so hard to get going again once you crash, 'cause it, it's slippery, you probably fell over because of the soft snow, and then you get snow in your cleats.
• 13:29
And so kind of getting going again, it's just a, uh, a bunch of errors in a row. Just like a comedy of errors of how many clowny things you can do. Sure. [laughs] And, uh, then we lost Travis.
• 13:41
And continuing the just funniness, clownishness of the r- of the kind of the whole biking and the goofiness is when Taylor and I came together, he didn't realize that it was even me.
• 13:54
We'd been teammates in the past, but I was so bundled up, he had no idea who he was racing against. Uh-huh.
• 13:59
And, uh, once, once he realized it was me, he, we chatted a little bit, and then the next thing I knew, he put his front wheel into a soft spot of snow. [laughs] And I looked back and he's, he's shoulders deep- Oh, no.
• 14:13
[laughs]... upside down in the snow bank, [laughs] which way over his back, scorpioned. And so I had to take a second to laugh before getting back to [laughs] racing and the business at hand. Right.
• 14:24
But it just, it was pretty fun. There was, so the, there was quite a bit of snow off the edge of the course was really soft, I assume, then. Yeah, that's what...
• 14:32
I, I think he just, whatever caught in a groove, and then went over to the powder snow, and full on endo- Oh, man... right on his head. That's, that's a funny story. I wonder if he has GoPro of that from his helmet view.
• 14:44
[laughs] Or one of the four drones covering the events caught it maybe. Yeah. So, uh, later this month, you're gonna be lining up at the USA Cycling US National Fat Bike Championship in Ogden, Utah. Who, uh,
• 14:59
who there do you want to make sure that you keep in sight to make sure that you make the podium? Like, who's your toughest competition?
• 15:07
Well, when it comes to the, you know, in road biking and mountain biking, you kind of know who's gonna be there every time. You got your big Tour de France champions and Tour of Utah champions.
• 15:18
But at Fat Bike Nationals, you gotta watch out for, you have the Sheriff. He was at Fat Bike Worlds. You have, uh, Kilt Man, also someone I want to keep in my...
• 15:29
These are, you know, all big names in the fat biking world. [laughs] And so- I saw Kilt Man. I know who you're talking about. Yeah. Bee Lady was out there as well, who's, you know, formidable once again. [laughs] And so-
• 15:44
So you're not worried about- It, it was a- You're not, you're not thinking maybe Ned Overend, or make sure that you keep Travis in your sight, or, or Brad Bingham, or?
• 15:53
Those guys are important, but I k- I kind of know their history. People like Bee Lady is a wild card. I don't know what to expect out of those characters.
• 16:04
[laughs] And that's, that's really what I'm trying to pay attention to out there in Ogden. Well, right on. I see that, you know- Yeah...
• 16:12
yeah, I see my coaching, you know, the, even though we haven't really talked, just the transcendental coaching that I've been doing for you [laughs] has been doing wonders. Yeah. [laughs] Well, right on. Yeah. Yeah.
• 16:25
Well, g- good luck in Ogden, Rob. Uh, yeah. Thank you. With Bee Girl. [laughs] And Kilt Guy. And Kilt Guy. And, uh, maybe even Mark [laughs] Peterson. Yeah, maybe you'll see Mark Peterson out there.
• 16:36
He's got a really long beard. Indeed. I think still. [laughs] Right. Yeah. Yeah, you never know. Thanks, guys. All right. Hey, you're welcome. Thanks for joining us on the show, man. Totally. Congratulations again.
• 16:46
Fat Bike World Champion, Mr. Robbie Squire, ladies and gentlemen. [clapping] Yay. [laughs] Thank you. All right, man, talk to you later. Bye. Robbie Squire. I know.
• 16:59
Let's take a break, listen to some, uh, what, some fat biking commercials. We should write some more fake commercials. I got some new gooch butter from the people at Squirt Lube, speaking of [laughs]- [laughs]...
• 17:12
of, of goofy commercials. Nice. Squirt Lube, it's the perfect little, um, marketing circle for gooch butter. True that. Grundle butter, grundle sauce.
• 17:27
[upbeat music] Have you ever had a saddle sore so long that you named it Doris? Does your gooch feel like something between sandpaper and turkey skin? Well, then you need Reemer Brothers Grundle Butter.
• 17:45
Just apply a big old double finger dab, sploosh, of Reemer Brothers Grundle Butter in your shorts before a long ride, and the process to transform that old leathery taint into a silky yet bulletproof gooch will begin almost immediately.
• 18:02
Sploosh. Reemer Brothers Grundle Butter, just try and you'll find. That's nice. Should I tweet it, too? Fuck yeah, I should. Hey, fat bikers.
• 18:18
This is Chris Daisy from Zion Cyclery. Most of the time I listen to heavy metal, but sometimes I listen to Sven and Gomez on Fat Bike Radio.
• 18:33
[echo] It's time for this week's Fatty Farm Field Report. We're not, we're, uh, that would normally, that would normally crack you up 'cause you would think I would say, gonna say [laughs] Yeah.
• 18:47
This week's Fatty Farm Field Report is presented by the Winter Rush Fat Bike Series.
• 18:52
Winter Rush is the home of the Michigan State Fat Bike Championships and will be your hosts of the 2017 USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships.
• 19:01
For more information, click the Winter Rush banner located on your Mother Gnomen show notes, or visit winterrush.com. Winterrush.com. Winter, speaking of winter or the lack thereof, God- Lack thereof...
• 19:16
God bless America, a lot of people are not happy with the weather. They should just go to Crested Butte because it was winter there. Yeah, I heard they got, like, 27 inches of snow on Sunday and Monday or something.
• 19:28
Mm-hmm. Right on. It is messing with events here in Milwaukee land. Indeed. I know that that Frosty Hog over in Cudahy that was scheduled for this coming weekend is, uh, is not gonna go off.
• 19:41
That, uh, I was over there at, uh, the park yesterday, and it's, ain't no snow over there. [laughs] Just wet grass. So they, they're, they don't wanna tear it up, and, uh- The ride-...
• 19:50
they're gonna, they're just canceling it... the ride across Lake Winnebago is probably not gonna happen either. Yeah, I wonder. It's only six feet deep, though, over there at Lake Winnebago. No way.
• 19:58
That's, that's a huge lake. I know. It's, like, an inland sea. It's like the deepest spot on, it's maybe 12 feet. Really? It's really shallow. Just covers a lot of area. Oh. So who knows, maybe it's still frozen.
• 20:08
I, they're, well, they're not gonna do it unless they can plow the road across it and, and put the Christmas trees as a- Oh, right... as a marker. Right. Right, Christmas trees. Yeah, I remember now. So yeah, weather.
• 20:22
Weather. [laughs] What about this stuff? So mount your studs, boys and girls. [laughs] Plow- Get ready for the great ice, ice dome Thunderdome I'm ho- Or beach ride...
• 20:33
I'm hoping, uh, as far as I could tell, I think, uh, I'm heading to La Crosse, and it's, I think they had six inches of snow. Oh, good. So there might be some good play out there.
• 20:42
Oh, it's colder over there, up towards Wausau and stuff. And, uh, we're gonna have Scott Chapin from up in, uh, Hayward area. Maybe they got some snow up there.
• 20:49
We'll talk to him in a little bit, uh, about stuff happening up that way. And, uh- I wanna go play in the snow... down here it's raining. I wanna go play. Hey, look at that, just like magic. I can't believe it.
• 21:01
We got Scott Chapin on the line from, uh, up in Hayward Way, Wisconsin there. Hey. Hi, Scott. How, how are you guys? [laughs] Mr. Chapin. Mr. Chapin's on the horn. Welcome to the weekly dose of fat. Yep.
• 21:13
I've, I've been having a, a, a good week of fat already, and we did get some more snow, like eight inches or so here. Nice. Excellent- Yeah...
• 21:22
'cause I know the base was, uh, at least on the, on the Birkie trail for the race coming up was, uh, pretty solid. You had a lot of wet snow early on, I think. Yeah, it- I mean, you were, you were out there earlier...
• 21:32
it's pretty rock hard. Nice. Get a little bit of extra on top, man, it's gonna be well good, man. Yeah. Well, we hope, we hope so. [laughs] So you just, uh, did you just get back from Cuyuna today?
• 21:45
Yeah, uh, there's actually about, uh, seven of us from the area. We decided to do a, a midweek little vacation.
• 21:52
And, and, uh, even though we have incredible riding here, it's always nice to get a, uh, to get a different perspective and ride a different trail system. So yeah, we were, we just did, like, an overnighter.
• 22:02
And, uh, the Cuyuna only got about a half inch of snow, so we, uh, we missed, uh, missed the, missed the storm, but we, we had some good, good riding. Yeah, that's a great trail out there. I spent the New Years there.
• 22:15
Did you get to see that, uh, the track groomer, that, that new groomer that Ranger Nick is rocking up there? No, we, we heard stories about it, and we were... We actually thought that they were out there. Mm-hmm.
• 22:27
Uh, and we never, never ran into...
• 22:29
We actually wanted to, uh, to check it out 'cause, um, well, uh, Kent Adams from Wildcat Groomers was with us, and he was just kinda curious as to, uh, uh, what the, what in the world this contraption was- Oh, yeah...
• 22:41
all about. So- Kent and I talked about it at, at Worlds there in Crested Butte last week, 'cause he was, he was there. Yeah. Right on. He's, he's, he gets around. I hear you had a good conversation. Oh, yeah.
• 22:52
So, um, you know, I, I, I see your interest in grooming extends to the local area up there. You guys are what, you're over 50 miles of groomed trails this year? That's what we call a segue gold right there.
• 23:03
That was a platinum segue. That was pretty, that was really good. Mm-hmm. Yes, we do. And, you know, it, it's kind of hard to count.
• 23:11
I mean, it gets, it's a little over 50 miles that we are, our local club is grooming and volunteers.
• 23:18
And it's probably more than that because a, a couple of the, uh, a couple of our groomers have taken it upon themselves to, um, 'cause they live closer to Hayward, to actually buy their own equipment and, uh, and make the capital expenditure.
• 23:32
And they're actually grooming Hatchery, which- Oh, wow... really wasn't in our, our original, uh, slate of, of, of trails that we, we had planned on groom- grooming.
• 23:41
So it's probably more like 60 when you count Esker and the beginner loop. So it's, it's an awful lot of trail to, to hit, take ca- care of. But we have, you know, we have a lot of, uh, a lot of equipment.
• 23:53
It's, it's kind of, uh, accumulating, and, and a lot of volunteers to use it. So, um, you know, we're- Everybody wants to go play out in the snow. Heck yeah. [laughs] Yeah. Heck yeah. They, they, they work in the snow.
• 24:04
We play in the snow, and then it snows, and you have to do it again. But it, uh, a lot of smiles on, uh, people's faces coming to visit on the, on the, especially on the weekend.
• 24:13
It's been, the traffic has been, uh, out- A lot busier than last year, and of course, last year was much, much busier than the year before. So it's, it's- So-... definitely catching on...
• 24:22
Sven and JK and I should come up and we should have like a man camp for 10 days in the Northwoods. [laughs] I, I, I wouldn't be opposed to that idea.
• 24:34
I like up in those cabins and- You, you got a, like a pole barn or something? We could probably, you know- I have a, I actually have a building that I call the man cave. [laughs] Dun, dun. Dun, dun. Dun. Yeah.
• 24:46
[laughs] So, so of, of the trails up there, is that, is that 00 Trailhead area right by Seeley, is that kind of the epicenter or is it kind of concentrating on another area? You know, I th- I think it really is.
• 24:58
  Um, it, it...
• 25:00
The last few weekends I've just kind of been monitoring the number of cars, uh, with bike racks, 'cause obviously, like last weekend there had to have been several hundred cars in the parking lot between skiers and fat bikers.
• 25:14
And it's just, there, there's a lot, because you can actually ride all the way up to the high point or you can do the big fat loop or the beginner loop. Th- that's all right there in that, in that area.
• 25:25
So it's, it's, it's a nice spot. Um, and you can actually dum- go down and do the Seeley trails just down the hill, but... And you can start from 00 if you take the big fat loop.
• 25:33
So you know, it's, there's a lot of trail right there and it's, you know, if you try to do, [laughs] even if you try to do half of it in a day, it's, it's, it's a lot of hours of, of riding, which is, of course, good.
• 25:45
[laughs] I wanna go there and I wanna ride that Mocqua Trail. I have happy memories of riding that in the snow before and it's just such a nice, flowy, fun trail, all those rock cairns. It is.
• 25:58
Well, speaking, you know, the, like Rock Lake, I could imagine that being even better in the winter 'cause stuff fills in where it's normally- Mm... a little, uh, a little- Rocky... rocky. [laughs] Yeah. The, the- Yeah.
• 26:09
I mean, it, some people like, some people like rocks, but I mean, I think a lot of people, I, I would tend to agree that a lot of the trails, even like the Ojibwe Trail, there's a five-mile loop that, um, there's just been a regular snowshoeing it, and there's normally a lot of rocks and it's, you know, lumpy and bumpy- Oh-...
• 26:27
and it's just like-... Ojibwe, I think-... perfectly smooth... means lumpy, humpty, humpty, lumpy. And there's, there's so much... Yeah, all of that on Ojibwe. Right. That's for sure.
• 26:38
So Scott, I know you got the, obviously the Fat Bike Birkie's coming, uh, up there at, in a, in about a month now. And man camp. And man camp too. Leading up to that. [laughs] Leading up to it.
• 26:49
Um, w- what, are there other organized events going on regularly? How, how, what do you got going on that way?
• 26:56
Well, what, what we have going, uh, well, we, we actually, uh, uh, had a meeting with Ben and Alan at the Birkie, and out of that meeting we, we came up with a couple other ideas even for Fat Bike Birkie weekend.
• 27:09
We're gonna, going to have a, uh, well, there's two things. There's a, going to be a, a, a demo day on Sunday up at 00. Mm-hmm. And we're getting all the details, but right now it's like 9:00 to noon.
• 27:22
We're gonna have vendors up there. We're gonna have some guided bike rides- Nice... um, on the single track, so it's all be in the single track. We're looking to do beer brats.
• 27:31
Um, I think the guided ride's going to start about 10:00 AM, and so it'll be a little festive, and I think it's gonna be sort of the prelude to maybe a bigger, better, uh, Sunday fun day thing, um, next year with some other ideas that I can't mention, but they're, they're pretty cool.
• 27:47
[laughs] We just have to make sure we can do them all.
• 27:50
Um, and then of course we're having, um, as far as, like, outdoor rides, we always have, you know, a couple rides a week, and we, we tend to either, you know, post them as a Tuesday, Thursday ride.
• 28:03
And then, uh, we're also, of course, having the post- The after, after party- The post... sponsored by fat-bike.com. Yes. Yes. Thank you so much. With your MC, when, and DJ, Mr. Sven Hammer.
• 28:18
Yeah, I'm gonna be looking for our banner that got ripped off up there last year. [laughs] Yeah, I, I heard, I heard stories about that. I haven't seen it. No, that's okay.
• 28:26
It, we, we couldn't really use it again anyway because Chris Chance made us change our logo a little bit. We, we changed our logo. Yeah, so. So it's slightly different now. So it's a collector's item now.
• 28:34
Actually, I think I could fill that in with white vinyl, so. Some- This is, you know, I gotta be honest, though. Yeah.
• 28:39
I don't know how I ended up with it, but probably about 1995 I ended up with one of the Chequamegon Fat 40 race banners somehow. Oh, this is just payback for that. So this is payback for that. Yeah, that's karma. Right?
• 28:49
That's karma. I don't even know where that came from, but it's sitting in the shop. I'm like, "Oh, where'd this come from?" [laughs] Hey, Scott, you know what burns 1500 calories per hour? [laughs] No, what's that?
• 28:59
Fat biking. Oh, oh, yeah. There, there you go. Men's Health Magazine apparently needed to tell us that. Yeah. I don't know. I, I u- Wow... I lose about two gallons of fluid per hour, I'm pretty sure.
• 29:10
Yeah, well, on, especially on days above 20 degrees, 'cause you end up getting pretty warm. Pretty much been every day here except for about two this year. [laughs] Yeah.
• 29:20
No, yeah, just, it's, we've had a really nice, nice, uh, nice winter here for, for temps, not a lot above freezing, and we've had snow for a while, and I know I'm probably just rubbing it in for you guys, so.
• 29:31
I, I just spent eight days- Sorry about that... in Crested Butte, so it was, uh- Oh, that's really nice... it was, it was pretty sweet. Nice.
• 29:38
Uh, you should just talk to Ken or look at Ken's pictures, because I'm telling you, every ride was, uh, just a eyegasm. A lung burner? Lung burner. Yeah, you know what?
• 29:49
I just recently lost a bunch of weight and have been riding a lot, so it was, [laughs] it wasn't nearly as painful [laughs] as I remembered it would be. Oh, yeah.
• 29:58
[laughs] Like, just, I was out in Colorado and riding at elevation this summer, and oh man, it wasn't nearly as bad as that, so I was actually fine. I was like, "Eh," you know, like, great gear up or, you know,
• 30:10
30 by 44 up anything. There you go. Oh, oh, exactly. It looked pretty firm. Yeah, it looked like a, looked like a fun time.
• 30:19
Oh, man, but after people got into it, it just got mashed potatoey a lot, and then where people crashed and- So it, but they, uh, they g- had a lot of cool groomed trail there, and you, friendo, you have 50 miles of groomed trail right out your door.
• 30:36
So you just don't have the surrounding jagged peaks and lack of oxygen. [laughs] No, but that, that's all right. We don't have to go, we don't have to go uphill for, you know- Yeah...
• 30:44
an hour to go downhill for 10 minutes, so w- that's- [laughs]... that's the beauty of Midwest riding, I guess. That's right. Yeah, for sure. And the cheese and sausage, and happy cows. And beer. That's right.
• 30:55
Oh, wait, beer, too. I guess it's another- That's good... it's, uh, oh, it's the top- And, and-... of one of those aforementioned hills. Have you got a beer, Scott? Do I, am I out of beer? Have you got a beer?
• 31:07
You know what's wrong with him. Oh, not right now. [laughs] No. Actually, we had plenty last night in, 'cause we were on vacation and, uh- Oh... I have too much work to do, so I'm, I'm actually behaving tonight.
• 31:17
Oh, boy, oh boy. So are you two. Why not me? A, a couple of us had, couple of us had a lot, maybe a little too much fun last night. [laughs] I got me a Growing Power Farmhouse Style Organic Pale Ale.
• 31:29
There was a lot in a- That sounds good... in a mouthful there. [laughs] But it is good. Well, Scott, thanks for coming on the show. Thanks for grooming all those trails, and thanks for, uh- Oh, you bet...
• 31:37
thanks for hosting Man Camp. Yeah, thanks for the, the inv- so we had some good stuff- Yeah, we should, we should roast a pig and, uh, what else, what else can we d- can we get out of Scott, you think? Bacon.
• 31:46
  [laughs] Well, one last thing.
• 31:47
We've got a lot of cool p- we got a lot of cool, uh, auction items, and we're gonna be s- selling beer, and all the p- all the proceeds at the Fat Bike Birkey Party will be going towards CAMBA, so, uh, bring your, uh,
• 32:01
you know, bring your appetite, bring your wallet, and, uh, it's gonna be so- some, some awesome, awesome stuff. And w- and you can look online on our Facebook page.
• 32:08
We'll be getting a, a list of some of the items that are donated, and it's some really sweet stuff, so. Right on. Cool. We'll do- Hey, I, I heard the format's a little different, too.
• 32:15
I've w- uh, that you're not doing the, uh, the call-out. There's a little bit different way to award the winners for the raffle.
• 32:22
I believe what we, our committee, um, had decided we're probably gonna be doing the, more of like a silent auction, where you r- jot down your, uh, what you're bidding instead of doing the, the raffle numbers.
• 32:35
So it's just more, because obviously nobody wants to... It's too hard to hear, you know, when you're calling out numbers. Right. So I think that's what...
• 32:42
I'm not on, I'm not in charge of that, but that's the last I heard, but we will be posting, uh, we'll be posting everything again online once we get a, a more solid list of, you know, what type of items will be there.
• 32:54
Um, so kinda look out, uh, CAMBA Fat or on the CAMBA, uh, website, which is cambatrails.org. Cool. Right on.
• 33:02
Hey, s- speaking of the Birkey, I noticed that the, uh, registration was finally filled up to the brim on Tuesday. I know, after you guys pimped it- Yeah... on the show.
• 33:10
We talked to Ben last week and pimped the heck out of it. [laughs] 63, 63 entries just like that. [snaps fingers] Bam. [snaps fingers] Bam. [snaps fingers] I know. Isn't that crazy? Snap.
• 33:18
[snaps fingers] That's the power of Fat Bike Radio. [laughs] No, that's- And of course your w- your well played, um, email list as well from Nancy and, yeah. Of course.
• 33:27
You know what I, you know what I put it on, is our Instagram feed. Oh, yeah? We're huge on Instagram. I spend more time on Instagram- I do enjoy the following... than I do my hair. Oh, that's a long time.
• 33:38
Although, maybe your beard gets more time. Hey, Scott. Are you ready for- Yeah... us bringing back the beard report? [laughs] Yeah, I think so.
• 33:46
[laughs] 'Cause my beard, when I was in Crested Butte, it went from hillbilly to homeless. Yeah? Just a little bit past homeless right now.
• 33:56
So it's, so it's, so that's just that, that, that's that fine line, the, the one inch- Mm-hmm... longer.
• 34:01
You know what that, the difference is, is like, people like, you have a mom with a young child in the store, the hillbilly, she just puts the child behind her, but when you go to the homeless, she actually gives you her change after she checks out in front of you.
• 34:14
There you go. [laughs] You gotta go to the right stores. It's all a money-making thing. Hey, you know what else? What's that? We had a question of the week this week, and we actually haven't asked anybody- Oh, hey...
• 34:24
what the answer is. I know. Hey, Scott's a person. Yeah. We could ask Scott. The question of the week- Okay, go ahead.
• 34:29
Yeah, the question of the week for this week is, uh, w- what do you do when you're fat biking to keep your hands warm? Gloves, pogies? Do you have a, a, a way that's working really well for you since you- DP them.
• 34:38
I think warm hands- Technical hand warmers... yeah, are, you know, a good thing. I wear, like, very, very big mitts to start my ride. You know, they're, they're actually, like, ice fishing, big, giant mittens.
• 34:51
And then I have a bag in the back, and once my hands get warm, then I can go to, almost can go right to just regular gloves. That's what I do. Yeah.
• 34:59
I like having the, uh, I like having an idea like that and, and also carrying around a, a shell to put on when I stop, because it's easy to get cold- Yeah...
• 35:07
real quick unless you got something you can just pop on when you're taking a 10-minute break or something. I like to bring the puffy jacket. Yeah, the puffy jacket.
• 35:13
And the other thing that I do, when it's been really cold, I mean, we haven't had really cold this year other than maybe a couple days, is, uh, you know, I've got a, a, a bag in the back of, uh, you know, just a, a sea bag that rolls out, and it, um...
• 35:27
Down is like, if it's really cold and you wanna just get going and you wanna get warm, uh, like a down vest, wear that over your jacket till you get warm.
• 35:35
And then of course, that just crumples up into nothing, and it's perfect. Yep. A little- The puffy jacket with a hood is what I keep in my pack- Yep... and that's, and a lot of times I end up finishing up rides
• 35:49
with that on. And definitely when you get back to the car- If you get cold...
• 35:52
just throw that on and pack up your- Or if, if you clunk your head in the woods, you're gonna actually, you can put that on and survive till someone [laughs] finds you. You gotta think about stuff like that sometimes.
• 36:00
Yeah. Right. Exactly. You know, and that's, I mean, true. It, it was down below zero here one night and some unfortunate young lady stumbled out of a party and passed out outside and never again awoke- Oh, no...
• 36:12
because she froze to death and- Oh, man... in the middle of the city on a street with, you know, I mean, it was 4:00 in the morning, but still. It can really happen anywhere. So be careful out there, kids.
• 36:24
Oh, yeah, I would just- Layer. [laughs] Oh, yeah. Ride, riding single track at night, I mean, you just gotta think about those things. Take a buddy. Have a friend. Go out with somebody you know. Take a, take a buddy.
• 36:31
Take a lighter, too, so you can start a fire. Fire, fire, fire. Mm-hmm. Well, all right. [laughs] All right, Scott. That's the, that's the- I-... educational part of our program... yeah. Well, thanks, Scott.
• 36:43
There, yeah, that was, that was good. Thanks very much for being on the show. I'd lot other good ideas, but they're not- Okay... not radio worthy. [laughs] Well, you, you can call in again.
• 36:50
Yeah, you got- You got our number now. I know. Well, I'll ca- I'll call in every time. And then you can trade places- You'll be sick of me... swap with Jerry once in a while, maybe we can get Jerry to call in.
• 36:58
Jerry in Kent. Yeah. Call from the barn. Jer, when you're sharpening those new teeth. Yeah, Jerry was, Jerry was with, Jerry was with us in, in- Cayuna... Cayuna too, so. Yeah. Yeah. All right.
• 37:09
I heard, I heard about it there over some pizza at the Avalanche Bar and Grill on Mount Crested Butte. Yep. See now who, now who's rubbing it in, mm-hmm. Okay, Mr. Name Dropper. Yeah, I know, I know. [laughs] I know.
• 37:22
But I can always rub it into you guys, 'cause we always have snow. All right. He's starting to sound like those guys from Grand Rapids, all snooty about their snow.
• 37:32
I actually, I actually enjoy some frozen gravel or a matrix- [laughs]... a matrix of slush and, and ice and God knows what. Isn't that what fat bikes are for? That's what I, that's what October is for here.
• 37:44
Adverse conditions. [laughs] All right, my man, thanks for ch- calling in the show. All, all right, guys.
• 37:52
We are going to move on to the next segment, which is- Hey, we, we will see you, we will see you at the Fat Bike Birkie. 10-4. Fat Bike Birkie. That you will. Bye. Bye. Okay, see you guys. Bye. Oh.
• 38:04
Hey, Scott lives up there in, uh, fat bike heaven. Cable, Wisconsin. Cable Hayward, et cetera, area. Yeah. Boy, I'd like to try Rock Lake in the winter. Would you now? I would. [laughs] I'm gonna be up there probably.
• 38:19
Well, there you go. So- You'll have, uh- I might have that opportunity... I think that you could write your own ticket. You know what I do, uh, during Showamagon, it, when everybody else is out there racing?
• 38:28
You go to Rock Lake. Oh, yeah. I go to Rock Lake [laughs] and ride the trails. I guess the race doesn't go through there. Unfortunately, I gotta take photos of the race though probably. Probably. Maybe.
• 38:36
Maybe somebody else could. There's probably better photographers out there than me. There's- I know there's better videographers out there than me. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I wanna work with Joe Grinnell to get that,
• 38:48
the, uh, drone footage like he shot last year. Drone footage. There were no fewer than four drones buzzing above the starting line of the Crested Butte Fat Bike World Championships.
• 39:03
I remember a day when you could be at a starting line at a race, any kind of race, mountain bike race, car, and there wasn't a damn drone in the air. Those things are just irritating as hell.
• 39:12
You know what would be cool, is if you could get... I saw [laughs] on the internet they're training eagles to take down drones. Yes. Which is- Yes, they are.
• 39:19
[laughs] If you could just have a falcon or something just to like, like take down people's drones. It'll be the eagles because that's always what happens in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series is the- Oh...
• 39:32
in the end. The eagle- Spoiler... the eagle takes the drone. The eagle saved the fucking day. [laughs] Uh, in both books. Why don't you just... Yeah. Ah.
• 39:42
[laughs] They only come through at the very, very, very possibly end-ish endy of the end, except for that- Well, you wouldn't-... extra long part...
• 39:50
you wouldn't have a saga in an epic like that if they went right to them. Hey, you know what burns 1,500 calories an hour? [laughs] Exhaustingly talking about Tolkien's philosophy and impact on social. Ah.
• 40:06
Are we in, uh, are we in the fat bike links? I don't know. Is that what we're doing? I think we danced. I think we put our toe in the- Yeah, we might have... water. I don't know.
• 40:13
We didn't talk about the Arrowhead 135, I don't think yet. No. Mm-mm. Yeah. Congratulations to the Peterbarys, who, uh, joined the bowling league and the fat biking league, and kicked ass across the board.
• 40:26
I wonder if they're like 300 bowlers as well. Probably. They seem driven, driven to win. Wiry. [laughs] Like a, like a, like, like a damn animal. Chimpanzee. No, no, no. [laughs] Yeah. A husky. A, like a cheetah.
• 40:42
But I'm spry. [laughs] Ouch. Well, congratulations Jay and Tracy, Arrowhead 135 champions for 2016. Yeah. We got a couple of, uh, couple of reports in the Link the Links section there from the Arrowhead.
• 40:57
Steve Cannon wrote a manifesto in three parts. It's fantastic. Sans, sans photographs. Yeah, but it's a lot of, lot of wordy words, but if you wanna know what it's like, man, that's it. I, the, I read it.
• 41:12
Basically relived the entire event. Yeah, it's pretty cool. Christopher Tarova, who I think is a, uh, salsa rider, he's, uh, he's on the Salsa Cycles culture blog. Yes, he's a Salsa, some sort of Salsa something.
• 41:27
The new general manager, Mr., uh, Ziegel from Surly, our, the show's sponsor, he, he rode the Arrowhead 135. It was chronicled. I think he had his own drone.
• 41:40
So did anybody do the Arrowhead and then bop right on over to the Fat Bike Worlds? [laughs] No. No, I don't think they did. [laughs] 'Cause that would only be- Wow, you were like very earnest with it. No. No.
• 41:52
I thought maybe, you know. [laughs] You're always about that, like, "Oh, well, let's do the Root for Roads 24, then go do the Wall Saw 24." Well, you only have to do 12 hours of it, though. Oh.
• 42:01
That's the beauty of the plan. Oh. Well. [laughs] See, the beauty is in its- No... simplicity, you see. [laughs] No. It makes total sense to me.
• 42:10
But, but, but see, it, it requires somebody to drive a limo or a, or a van to take people up there, so you can crib a little bit. A helicopter or a hovercraft. Oh. You know. Either way. Speaking of hovercraft,
• 42:23
Danielle Musto caught up her blog, and, uh, that girl is back in the saddle. You know, she, uh, she was...
• 42:34
Uh, she's like a perpetual on the podium, and she used to always win-win And now she's back win-winning Win, win So she was, you know- Whoop, whoop...
• 42:43
last year she wasn't the series champion, but this year she is in the lead. In the- Danielle... in the lead. And the nicest lady, just the nicest lady. You'll, you'll get that from her blog.
• 42:54
It actually very nice as well. Indeed. So Joe Boo groomed his backyard. [laughs] Code. Once again, code. [laughs] Yo. Yep, and he has some snow back there, too. Huh. Here's code for you.
• 43:13
[snorts] [laughs] Follow us on Instagram. You know what I'm saying? Bang old Instagram. You know- That's like the, that's like the new- You know what that says?... modern Flickr, right? Is that like Flickr now?
• 43:23
It's fatbike.com. [laughs] All spelled out. Yeah. Yeah, I'm not even gonna spell it out. Just click on that thing in that there, uh, uh- What is it?... show notes and-.com.com It's like Flickr- Do-... for your phone.
• 43:35
It's the n- the, the new modern photo-sharing. Conventional spelling Social photo-sharing, Instagram. We should have Bruce back on the show again, 'cause he's always on the show. Right. That's true.
• 43:48
He's pretty much [laughs] every week writing about something about fat bikes or plus bikes or something, something, something. Yeah. He could call. Call.
• 43:56
I'm just gonna go there to Scotland one day and show up at his door with some b- with some chocolates. [laughs] And the threats continue. [laughs] Oh, we have 10 minutes to our special segment.
• 44:12
What do you think we should talk about? I don't know. Hey, you want to, uh, answer this week's question, how do you keep your... My hands warm? Yeah. Mm-hmm. Well, uh, obviously, it depends on the day.
• 44:22
Um, but if it's colder than, you know, 10 or something, then it usually involves, most of the time those big ice mittens.
• 44:31
They're, they're from, uh, up in Superior, and they're huge, and they're deerskin and lined- Mm-hmm... and they're like a lobster claw, and they're big. And those are, like, for the first...
• 44:42
until my hands start feeling warm, and then it's more like Pearl iZumi gloves. Uh, unless it's really windy and crappy, and then pogies.
• 44:51
But I really just, I don't like the hassle of a pogie, even, even a quick to put on one. And riding on the narrower trails, I'd just rather have gloves on. Gotcha. JK? I rely on the, uh, Pearl iZumi lobster- Oh, yeah...
• 45:09
claws. Stam- that's a good glove. Yeah. And, and then, you know, just always have, like, some sort of liner or a, you know, kind of a, like, mellower springtime glove- Sure... just in case.
• 45:21
It's like, okay, now it's really not that cold anymore and I actually wanna breathe. [laughs] Mm-hmm. Right on. Like, not sweat within my, you know, self that way. But it's,
• 45:32
that, that's been a good standby, even in th- like, cold rain conditions, which- Oh, yeah... we're not even hitting. I mean, but it's still cold. It's whatever. And it still does its job that way.
• 45:44
Yeah, lobster gloves, Pearl iZumi lobster gloves. So I'd, I've, I'm- I've definitely got a-... I probably have my second pair... I've got a pair. Yeah, I've got three.
• 45:49
Well, I have the one of the original, like, really big, puffy ones from the '90s. Mm-hmm. And the new ones are thinner and much better at staying dry and much warmer, and technology's a cool thing.
• 46:00
[laughs] Well, I guess I'm the only one who uses pogies out of the three of us. I've, I've used every kind of pogie, too. I've tested every kind of pogie.
• 46:09
Um, and the latest one that I tested is that Wolftooth, the low-rise bikini number, and those work fairly well for this, this winter.
• 46:18
Um, I wear Pearl iZumi softshell gloves, so a very thin 40 degree, 32 to 40 degree kind of comfort level glove inside the pogies.
• 46:30
Or if it's really cold, I'll wear a really thin pair of gloves with a medium pair of wool gloves, Filsons or whatever off-brand, but wool rag gloves inside of pogies. Um, I just feel like...
• 46:46
And if it's, if it's gonna be 35 degrees, I'll just wear regular long finger mountain bike gloves inside of pogies. Hmm. Um- I think in the wet and in the wind, I like pogies. Yeah. I like the new pogies.
• 47:00
They go on and off the bike super easy. Those Wolftooths have a l- a special little end cap that just, they snap on and off in, in literally a minute.
• 47:10
Uh, and d- because you don't even have to, they don't have vents like the CobraFists or some of the other, uh, pogies have, but you can open up the, the area along the bar and they vent out very easily.
• 47:25
So it's, it's a really nice lower 48. I also think that, man, Bar Mitts extremes are pretty good for lower 48. But then, of course, if you go up to the Arctic, it's the Revelates and the Dogwoods, the
• 47:40
super insulated versions. Super insulated. I like the idea of the, uh, the Wolftooth where it folds down and you've got like, it's quicker entry. That may be enough to push me over. Yeah.
• 47:54
Kent actually had some even lower rise, uh,
• 48:00
hand versions, almost looked like brush guards for motocross, and heated grips that, uh, is a product that comes right out of the USA that we'll be, we'll be having on the site. He's selling it through his website.
• 48:12
Oh, cool. And he was, uh, he was showing it at the, uh, the Worlds. We saw heated grips, like, three years ago or more at- I know. May, right, May of those? Yeah, somebody, yeah, three or four years ago at Interbike. Ah.
• 48:26
You know what I should do? I'm gonna push a button just for the heck of it and see what happens. Hey, welcome to the radio program. Who do we have on the line? Hey, this is Amber who I go by Evolution Cycles in Madison.
• 48:37
Hi, Amber. It's, uh, Sven here, and, uh- Hi... next to me, very, very uncomfortably close, is Uncle Gomez. [laughs] I'm literally like- Oh, no [laughs]... six, six feet away from it too.
• 48:48
Yeah, it's about, that's close enough there, buddy. [laughs] Just stay, stay back now. Aw. We're talking to a young lady on the phone here. Just, just stay your distance, sir. Man. [laughs] Oh, man. So
• 49:01
you're actually, uh, Amber, you're, you and your event is, uh, our special segment this evening. And, uh- Oh, man... I guess JK is going to announce this segment in a very, uh, very official way. [laughs] Okay.
• 49:16
Here we go. [laughs] In our special segment this evening, Amber from Revolution Cycles in Madison is gonna call in- Uh, that she's already on the phone [laughs]... and she's already on the phone.
• 49:26
I'm literally eating my words. And talk to us about [laughs] the women's fat bike demo with Surly Bikes. Hey, Amber. Welcome again to the show. Thank you.
• 49:37
Tell our listener about this fabulous event that's, uh, that's being done just for the ladies. Cool.
• 49:43
So I am working with Bell Helmets, and I am one of their six, um, Joy Ride Ambassadors for 2016, and the program is all about bringing, um, just, uh, bringing different events to get women out there riding and to ride more often.
• 50:01
So, um, in the middle of winter, it's kind of hard to get on the, get on the dirt, so, um, I asked Surly to lend us some demo bikes.
• 50:11
And we're gonna bring them out to a trailhead, get some coffee and get some donuts, and then just let everyone have fun.
• 50:17
And then I also found out that, um, Quality Bikes is going to, um, donate some product, and also Revolution Cycles is generously giving us some products as well.
• 50:28
So at 1:00 PM we're gonna have a raffle, so anyone that donates $5 will be entered into a raffle to win some cool things as well.
• 50:36
And then all that money is gonna go back to CORP because they're the ones that make this all happen with grooming the trails. Um, the event is free, and it's open to all women, all ages, and all ability levels.
• 50:49
And then it's gonna be over at Quarry Ridge. Um, we're gonna set up near the parking lot, so just look for the Revolution Cycles tent and the Surly banner.
• 50:57
And then it's gonna start around 11:00 or 11:00 AM, and then, um, run until around 3:00, so. And that's happening Saturday? Saturday, February 13th. Saturday, February 13th. So like- Right on... like a week down- Yeah...
• 51:14
a week down the road. So if you're- And if, uh, if the ladies- Yeah... don't have a fat bike, Surly will be, um, will have their demo fleet there for them to try out some bikes? Yeah. So it's gonna be either way.
• 51:26
So if you have a fat bike, bring it out, ride. Then you also have, um, we have, like, eight demo bikes, um, all different sizes. Um, definitely extra small and smalls.
• 51:37
There's also gonna be some mediums, and I'll probably be able to get a large out there as well. Um, so yeah, even, like, young...
• 51:43
I've had a lot of questions about bringing kids, so, like, younger ladies, they're definitely, like, welcome to come with a parent, um, and try the bikes as well.
• 51:52
And it's a, really just a social event, so there's no pressure. Just come out and hang out and have some fun. And then there's a bunch of information on the She Shreds Madison Facebook page. Mm-hmm.
• 52:04
And then I would also encourage you to check out the Bell Joy Ride Madison Facebook page because every month there's gonna be a different event, so. Cool. Cool. Yeah.
• 52:13
We'll, we'll put that, uh, we'll put those links in the show notes. You mentioned the social- Great... portion of this event for the ladies. Uh- Yeah... is, is, is Earl gonna be helping you out at the event?
• 52:25
Um, I don't know. I mean, one for the ladies there, ladies, Earl from Revolution Cycles. I know. Seriously.
• 52:29
[laughs] I think it's, I think it's, like, girls, girls only until the, uh, the after party and the, uh, after- Yeah... after the after party, which is at an Irish bar. There's a [laughs] there's a, there's a crit.
• 52:44
The, it is a crit around Scott Walker's Death Star, 'cause you gotta be the champion of something, you know? Right. Yeah. The, the, the, the...
• 52:51
and in Madison, Wisconsin, we can't have, like, the [laughs] Ukrainian National Championship, so we have the US Fat Bike Criterium National Championships going down after the, the...
• 53:03
So you could go, you could demo a bike, you could, you know, sew yourself a, a Yeti costume and enter this Criterium Championships and be a huge hit. And that's all on the same day. Yeah. Yeah. That's all- Yep...
• 53:17
going on in Madison, Wisconsin? Mm-hmm. Wow. I wonder how beuf- beer, beer-fueled the event- [laughs]... this will be. I was, I was thinking that they'd have some beer there.
• 53:26
[laughs] Well, it could get, uh, it could get quite messy. So, uh, JK, anything to add to that? Oh, it's just funky when they... Uh, I was in, in Madison last year and
• 53:41
completely ignorant of that oc- occurring the day after. [laughs] Right. You didn't, didn't know it was Winterfest, but all of the sudden- No, not at all... they held a parade for you. Yeah.
• 53:49
[laughs] It's just like, "Hey, went to a concert night before." I'm like, "Oh, wait, wait. Why is there snow all over [laughs] ar- around the capital?" [laughs] More importantly, how did it get here?
• 54:01
Yeah, in the dead of night. It was amazing. Yeah, it was quite, quite respectable. I was really impressed by that. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah.
• 54:05
Are they g- Amber, are they gonna have to truck snow in again this year, or do you have pretty good snow? Yeah, they did it... No, they're gonna... [laughs] We have a little bit, but it's all melting.
• 54:15
Um, but yeah, they truck it in, so it's guaranteed that you're gonna have a groomed track to ride on. Yeah.
• 54:21
Um, yeah, you just ride your bike around the capital a bunch of times on this really nice groomed snow, and then after you get to drink a bunch of beer, so- Right on. I think-... it's gonna be great...
• 54:30
Gomez gonna g- You make- You're gonna go race around the capital? You make it sound [laughs] like so much- Yeah... fun, Amber. I'm, I'm gonna race. [laughs] I'm, I'm gonna try- Yeah... I have that head fleece skin suit.
• 54:42
[laughs] Oh, yeah. Yeah. I remember that. That I'm gonna paint a, maybe, like, a wizard mural on the back and race. So that's all you know, folks... and there's lots of good, good heckling.
• 54:53
There were beer handups and everything last year too [laughs] so- Oh, damn... kind of a weird juxtaposition with the capital and then beer handups, so. And sort of like a cyclocross race really, right?
• 55:04
Yeah, I think that's- Yeah. They're, they're really awesome, so. With the more, the, the atmosphere and the, and the, and the festivities and whatnot. It's a criterium, lad. Yeah. You go around in circles.
• 55:13
Ride your bike around in circles. [laughs] We go round in circles.
• 55:16
[laughs] It's more like a square, actually, but [laughs] Amber, you have shown a great deal of patience, and I'm sure this time will count towards you getting to heaven, nirvana or getting in to see Nirvana
• 55:30
somewhere another day. Cool. That would be in heaven, man. Good. Yeah. [laughs] Thanks for calling, Amber. [laughs] Appreciate it. Um- Thank you. Have a good evening...
• 55:38
February, February 13th, Saturday, uh, Revolution Cycles, Surly, Amber, probably not Earl. [laughs] Flying monkeys. But having fun in the snow in Madison. Scott Walker, riding bikes. Yeah. Jumping snowdrifts.
• 55:54
Well, this is- Kill it. [laughs] Thanks again, Amber. See you later. [laughs] See you. Bye. Hey, crikeys, we just talked about Surly for that whole segment.
• 56:06
Do we have to go ahead and thank them again for sponsoring today's radio broadcast here on- Surly... Fat Bike Radio? Bikes, parts and chaos.
• 56:15
I think we just witnessed some of that damn chaos right there, I'll tell you what, man. Join us next week when the question of the week is, "Why does it hurt when I pee-ee-ee?" [laughs] No, really.
• 56:37
[laughs] Plus, we invite event promoters to call in and pimp your local fat bike race. Help us help you dance the rumba of fat bike fun. Call 818-918-2453, or not.
