- 1:59Check that out. Beautiful place.
- 2:01Beautiful place, definitely. But yeah, we got a special one
- 2:05tonight, man, with a very special player.
- 2:11And who we've got tonight is wide receiver for your Virginia
- 2:15Tech hoagies, the all time receiving letter in VHSL
- 2:21history. I'm only going to call him
- 2:24Keelan Adams because I know his Mama don't like them to your
- 2:27body. Call him Brody.
- 2:28Y'all call him what y'all won't call him.
- 2:29But ladies and gentlemen, Keelan Adams.
- 2:33Yeah, I do it. Thanks for having me.
- 2:36What's happening? Thank.
- 2:37Thanks for joining us tonight. I really appreciate it.
- 2:41I'm with Curtis. I'm gonna stick with Keelan.
- 2:43I don't want to. I don't want anybody's mom be
- 2:45upset with me. So that's, that's that's why
- 2:46we're going to roll with him. Yeah, I might call him Key every
- 2:49now and then, but I ain't, I ain't, I ain't calling him what
- 2:51his Mama said. Don't call him.
- 2:53Yeah, we we own that scoop. They're going to be somebody
- 2:56around you in the future is going to be like, hey, Brody.
- 2:58And it's going to be like pop like you and his Mama, won't
- 3:01you? So Keelan, we appreciate you
- 3:05taking some time tonight, man. Got some.
- 3:07Definitely looking forward to asking me some of these
- 3:09questions to see how everything's going.
- 3:10But let's kick it off. We do know you missed a lot of
- 3:13time in the winter and in the spring with an injury.
- 3:17First of all, how are you feeling right now?
- 3:21I'm feeling good. I feel like it's been a long
- 3:23recovery process since the bowl game, but like coming, coming
- 3:28together, I feel like it's it's I'm feeling good right now.
- 3:33That's good to hear, I know. Now we were talking.
- 3:40You did not, you weren't Privy to not missing all those fun
- 3:44stuff, right? You still had to wake up every
- 3:46morning hunger drills and go to it, right?
- 3:48Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:49No, even though I was hurt, I was still at everything.
- 3:52I think in total I probably missed like maybe four days once
- 3:58I have my surgery, including the day of the surgery.
- 4:03I, I know I had my surgery, I want to say it was on like a
- 4:07Tuesday and then I stayed night there, came back Wednesday and
- 4:15did not think Thursday and Friday I was just at home.
- 4:19My, my mom, my parents came and they stayed with me for like a
- 4:22week. So like that whole weekend it
- 4:25was there and then Monday, I'm pretty sure I went back to the
- 4:28facility and I, I was there for everything.
- 4:30I just couldn't do nothing. Yeah, man.
- 4:33So you, you had the surgery, you had a couple days and then you
- 4:36were right back to it showing up.
- 4:38You had meetings, you had, you know, all the all the offseason
- 4:41workouts showing up and put in the middle reps as much as you
- 4:44could. Yeah.
- 4:48Yeah, good deal. Speaking of the injury, I mean,
- 4:51I know like a lot of times with things like that, I know you
- 4:54always like, it's, it's always good to like try to learn
- 4:56something like what was what was the biggest thing you learned
- 4:58about yourself going through that process and the recovery
- 5:02and all that? I say I learned two things.
- 5:07I feel like one thing I learned, I definitely learned like how
- 5:10blessed I am. Like just going through the
- 5:14whole process, it really made me think like, I'm still here.
- 5:18Like the surgery could have went bad, but it didn't, it went
- 5:21good. So it's like, that's one thing.
- 5:23And then it's like, even to be in the situation I'm I'm in now,
- 5:26like I'm at school, playing a sport that I love and getting
- 5:30my, my education paid for. Like there's a lot of people in
- 5:33the country that would really like want this situation or this
- 5:38opportunity. And I just feel like I'm blessed
- 5:40to have that and the people around me that supported me
- 5:41through this whole, this whole thing.
- 5:44And then the second thing I said is don't take things for
- 5:46granted, like how we said I was there to, even though I couldn't
- 5:50do anything, I was there watching practices and all that,
- 5:53you know, hunger drills. It didn't feel that bad because
- 5:56like, I don't think anybody really wants to do hunger
- 5:58drills. But like springboard, that's
- 6:00where it really like hit me where it was like this was like
- 6:03my first real injury. So it was never like, I mean,
- 6:06like in high school, I like sprained my thumb or something,
- 6:09sprained the ankle. But it was like I knew I was
- 6:12going to play in the game when it was time.
- 6:15I might have sat in the practice, but I knew when Friday
- 6:16came, I was going to play. But this was like the first time
- 6:19where it was like I really knew like I wasn't going to play in
- 6:22the in the spring game, like I wasn't going to go practice.
- 6:25So it was like it really made me look at football a little bit
- 6:29because this is the first time like I really couldn't do
- 6:32anything. Man, that's got to be tough.
- 6:37I was getting ready. I was going to actually ask you.
- 6:38I'm glad you reiterated this is the first time in your life you
- 6:41were like hurt, hurt, like couldn't do anything, couldn't
- 6:43do football, couldn't do practice, couldn't lift weights.
- 6:45So it's just I'm here and I I, I, I like what you said there
- 6:49because I think people do take for granted, especially I know
- 6:53there's probably teammates and there's probably guys, you know,
- 6:56all over football, all over just the real world, never been hurt
- 7:00from and it and it takes you away.
- 7:02I love hearing that. Kelly, what you got on tap next,
- 7:05man? Yeah, so Keelan is one of the,
- 7:11if y'all don't know who he is, do your research.
- 7:15One of the most accomplished players in Virginia history
- 7:18ever. We can go on and on.
- 7:20Coaches all over wanted you. I know of one that's close to me
- 7:24that definitely wanted you, but you know, it is what it is on
- 7:28all of that. We're glad you ended up at
- 7:29Virginia Tech, but just how is that process going through the
- 7:32recruiting process with kind of everybody, you know, wanting you
- 7:36to to come to the school? I started my recruit, my
- 7:40recruitment kind of early. I got my first offer in 8th
- 7:42grade. So like at first it was, it was
- 7:44fun. It was like a, it was, it was
- 7:48fun. And then as, as it went on, it
- 7:51started really showing me like all the hard work and the stuff
- 7:54I was doing was really starting to pay off.
- 7:56Like I was finally getting the things that I was working for.
- 8:01So by the time I got to about like junior year and I start
- 8:06trying to map out like, OK, what schools do I want to start
- 8:10looking at to maybe plan the official for or what schools
- 8:13like I started narrowing down the list.
- 8:15So when it got more serious. And but I mean, even then when
- 8:18it got more serious, it was still fun because it's like,
- 8:20like I said before, everybody doesn't get to do this.
- 8:23Like it's, it's not a lot of people in the world that get as
- 8:27many offers I had or TV things that I teach.
- 8:30So it was like it was, it was pressure when it came down to
- 8:34picking the school, but it like, I feel like it was a good kind
- 8:38of pressure because like I said, people don't, people don't have
- 8:40that type of pressure to be like, oh, I don't know what
- 8:42school I want to pick. It's so I look, I try to see the
- 8:45positive in that. And it was it was fun for me.
- 8:50That's awesome to hear. I'm looking, I'm looking through
- 8:53the list Tally you ain't lying offers Alabama, Ohio State,
- 8:57Texas A&M, Auburn, Miami, Penn State.
- 9:02You could have went anywhere, man, haven't you come here like
- 9:06looking at that. And again, we we were covering
- 9:08your recruitment and stuff. We talked about when you got it,
- 9:10but that's been a couple years ago and seeing you had all those
- 9:13offers, all those opportunities, you come here, I love hearing
- 9:17it. And then another thing you are
- 9:19definitely a driving catalyst of is Green Run to Virginia Tech.
- 9:24You were the first, you know, you know, you had Zeke this
- 9:28year. Come.
- 9:29I know he's one of the guys along with a few others.
- 9:31But how does it feel to be like that guy to kind of be the
- 9:35leader of the Green Run football team, getting the offers from
- 9:39Tech and saying, let's go here, let's do it in state, let's
- 9:42represent VA. It feels good.
- 9:46It's crazy because it's I mean, I've done a couple of interviews
- 9:49and I've gotten that question, just word it differently.
- 9:52But like I've never really like thought of myself as like the
- 9:55leader that started it. It was kind of just we all seen
- 9:59the same thing in the coaching staff and the people and just
- 10:02the school as a whole. So I never really looked at it
- 10:05as like I'm the leader of it, but like, I feel like we all, we
- 10:09all know what we were looking for.
- 10:10Like coming from a green run, we know what it was like there and
- 10:13we, we basically like, well, I know at least with me, I tried
- 10:16to find the, the green run in the schools.
- 10:19But I mean, I feel like we all kind of understood what we were
- 10:24looking for as far as a college and then we all end up picking
- 10:27the same school and it just, it's been working.
- 10:32Man, I love hearing that. And I mean, the, the next thing
- 10:35I got for you is kind of on the same vein and you just kind of
- 10:37talked about it a little bit, but like, you know, I'm sure you
- 10:42know it, but like the perception of Virginia Tech for a while in
- 10:45the in the 75 was not that great.
- 10:47And, you know, it feels like with with the pride regime
- 10:51coming in and kind of turning that corner, you know, talk to
- 10:54me a little bit of how you felt some of that perception change
- 10:57in the 757 as it pertains to Virginia Tech.
- 11:03Well, me personally, it definitely changed because it
- 11:06was actually like it was my second offer.
- 11:10It was UNC Tech and the UVA. And I got I was offered by
- 11:17Smitty and Tap with the old coaching staff and it was like
- 11:22they offered me and then that was it.
- 11:26Like I, I never talked to anybody.
- 11:28They never talked to my coaches, nothing.
- 11:29So like for the longest, like once I started getting a lot of
- 11:31offers, I really didn't see myself going to Tech at first.
- 11:34I didn't, I didn't see myself coming here because it was like
- 11:37I knew nothing about the school. I didn't know anything about the
- 11:40people. And like you said, the, the
- 11:43perception of Virginia Tech in the 75 wasn't really a good
- 11:47thing. So it was like being around that
- 11:49and then experiencing it for myself, like I'm not talking to
- 11:52these coaches or these coaches aren't talking to the people
- 11:54around me. I never really like thought
- 11:58about coming to Tech until Pride got here.
- 12:01And soon as he got here, he reached out to my coaches.
- 12:05They reoffered me with the new coaching staff and then from
- 12:08there they was in contact with all the people around me until
- 12:12they was actually able to talk to me.
- 12:14And ever since then, even now, it's still the same like I can
- 12:18talk to coach pride and we still have the same conversations,
- 12:22just like I was in recruiting. The same with coach Mines and
- 12:24all the other coaches. Man, it's I, I don't even know
- 12:29what to say about that because it's, it's one of those things
- 12:32you sit here and you know, we're fans, but it's like the level
- 12:38that you were regarded, the way you played high school football,
- 12:40the competition you played against, to say you got an offer
- 12:44that's wonderful, but you don't hear from anybody after that
- 12:48like that, that, that, that breaks me.
- 12:51And I know it's different with the coaching staff nowadays.
- 12:54And you know, it seems like they, they, they, they come down
- 12:57there, they like you said, they talk to, and I love what you
- 13:01said because it shows they're doing that.
- 13:02They talk to everyone that they could talk to around you until
- 13:05they until it was appropriate to talk to you.
- 13:08Because if they couldn't talk to you, because we know there's
- 13:10restrictions, there's all sorts of wild ships goes on for
- 13:14recruiting. It's like you can't talk to them
- 13:15now. You can't visit them now, they
- 13:16can't come here. They can.
- 13:18And it's like, at least they were trying to get everything to
- 13:20learn everything about Keelan Adams.
- 13:23So when they got a chance to speak to you, they knew you as
- 13:26much as they could without talking to you face to face.
- 13:28I love that. That's how recruitment work,
- 13:34man. You got to recruit families, not
- 13:35just players. So I mean, I think they've done
- 13:38a a good job of of that as of lately.
- 13:41Just shifting gears a little bit.
- 13:43We'll talk a little bit about last year.
- 13:45I know it was brand new to you coming in, you know, probably
- 13:48missing your senior prom, enrolling early, stepping on
- 13:52campus, getting ready to play and there was a lot of
- 13:56expectations on that team. Season didn't turn out kind of
- 14:00how we wanted. I know it didn't turn out how
- 14:02y'all want it. So with that though, kind of
- 14:06what did you learn from that experience with you coming in
- 14:08highly regarded like you were, you know, sitting and learning
- 14:11just a little bit and seeing it play out like it did?
- 14:17I feel like I feel like everyone on the team has the same
- 14:19mindset, especially now. Like last season was
- 14:22disappointing because it was it felt like we did so much in the
- 14:25offseason and built up to to have a good season.
- 14:29It didn't turn out the way that we wanted to, but just sitting
- 14:33back and watching I've I tried to find ways to become a better
- 14:37player so that way when it was my turn, I'd be ready.
- 14:39So like as far as the receivers, I tried to take something from
- 14:44all of the older guys that was playing.
- 14:46I tried to take something from their game and add it to mine.
- 14:49So when it was my turn, they there would be no question if I
- 14:52could do it or not. Like we had like Steve, Steve
- 14:56was like tough, great route runner.
- 14:58So I tried to incorporate that into my game.
- 15:00Like Steve could play anywhere. Like last year, we put him in
- 15:03the slot if we had to outside everything.
- 15:05So I tried to incorporate that into my game.
- 15:08So if if coach mine wants me to go to the slot, there wouldn't
- 15:12be a question. Like I don't know if he can do
- 15:14it. Like they're going to blow.
- 15:15No, we're confident and putting him there and just little stuff
- 15:19like that. Try to take something from all
- 15:21of those those other guys to make my game better.
- 15:23So when it was my turn out be good.
- 15:27Now listen. Full disclosure, this is
- 15:29Jonathan Talley speaking on his own behalf.
- 15:31I do not know this man. I'm not his family, so I'm
- 15:35speaking for myself. I was yelling at the TV to every
- 15:38game because I seen motherfuckers out there dropping
- 15:40the ball, not hustling. I can go on and on.
- 15:45I said, put him in, let's see what he can do.
- 15:48But I'm going to go back and say, God, don't make no
- 15:51mistakes, because I nobody knew kind of the injury that you was
- 15:55dealing with or you know what I'm saying, what could have
- 15:58happened, what it was like everything played out the way
- 16:00it's supposed to be. It's just crazy to me that you
- 16:04was able to do what you've been able to do on one leg.
- 16:07Like I watch a lot of film and you was you was eating people
- 16:12ass up with one leg even in the bowl game.
- 16:15So if that, if that never happened, like if they say, Oh
- 16:18well, he got hurt during the season, like you were injured in
- 16:21the bowl game and still show some glimpses of, of what you
- 16:25can do on the on the college level.
- 16:29You, you, you let everybody be known who you were in that bowl
- 16:32game with that big play. Because when it, because I
- 16:35remember watching it here at the house, it was like right back
- 16:37there, right there, right in front of the TV right there.
- 16:40You hit it and I'm like, good Lord, like that's what we've got
- 16:45on the back burner. That's the guy coming.
- 16:47Back why they said why they on the sideline.
- 16:49Why is he on the sideline? My bad.
- 16:54Hang on. It's true, though.
- 16:57Like that play. I think for some people, for so
- 17:00many people, it's like it's always what is he like?
- 17:03What is he like? And in national TV, late
- 17:06December, you go out there and do that.
- 17:08And it was just like, oh, oh, that's who he is for us, Yeah.
- 17:12We going to be alright. We going to be OK, we going to
- 17:20talk a lot about, we going to talk a lot about that on on the
- 17:23next show. So we ain't going to get Keelan
- 17:24all involved in that. But I will tell you, I will, I
- 17:28will tell you you, you definitely have people that have
- 17:34watched your game and understand what you bring to the table.
- 17:37So I know you quiet, I know you don't talk a lot.
- 17:41I've been so excited to see you doing, you know, more
- 17:44interviews, getting in front of the camera, things like that.
- 17:47That's awesome. But anybody who knows football
- 17:50and pays attention to football, if you don't know what this man
- 17:54can do on the football field, and I mean, you're not watching
- 17:56football. So we've been, we've been, we've
- 17:59been excited for you, man. We've been ready to see you, you
- 18:02know, just just come into your own and and do what you do.
- 18:04So definitely excited to watch you and and, and cheer.
- 18:08Y'all. I got to get one of those shirts
- 18:10too. Yeah, what is the shirt?
- 18:13Go ahead, shout out the shirt right there.
- 18:14It's pretty sick looking when this one.
- 18:18Yeah, that one. The the hoodie this it's a
- 18:21spider hoodie. It's a spider.
- 18:23In Oh no, I wouldn't talk about the spider.
- 18:26I'm. Talking about yo shirt, I
- 18:32thought you were. Talking about that one, huh?
- 18:34Yeah, I've seen the shirt. Yeah.
- 18:36You ain't seen the shirts, Curtis.
- 18:38I haven't seen the shirt. I thought you were talking about
- 18:40the shirts wearing. I was like.
- 18:43That's a young man shirt. He got it.
- 18:47Sally say he he, he, he aged out on that one.
- 18:49He aged out on that one. He talked about last season a
- 18:53little bit. Let's talk about this year's
- 18:55team and coming up, you know, you got a new offensive
- 18:57coordinator, Coach Monty. I mean, what a track record he's
- 19:01got, man. I'm I'm sure you probably looked
- 19:03it up and probably knew about it as soon as it was named
- 19:05high-powered offenses balance, though he's had wide receivers,
- 19:11he let them show out without a doubt.
- 19:12I mean, in his career since he became a coordinator about I
- 19:15think it's 14 years ago, 9000 yard wide receiver seasons 9,
- 19:21that's like 1 every other. And he had some who were like at
- 19:24981. So he clearly puts wide
- 19:29receivers in the position. So just in your short time, we
- 19:33know it's only been about 6-7 months.
- 19:36What's he like as a coordinator just in the meeting rooms and
- 19:39stuff? And what was your reaction like
- 19:43when the playbook was given? Like, so you know who he is and
- 19:46then all of a sudden here's the playbook on your tablet or in
- 19:49paper. What is he like?
- 19:51What's he like as a coach? And then what would you like
- 19:52when you got that playbook? When I got the playbook, I think
- 19:57that was around the time when I first started like really
- 19:59walking around screen bomb. And I had to brace.
- 20:02I still had the limp and everything going, but I had just
- 20:04stopped using the crutches. I've seen the playbook.
- 20:06I told Coach Ryan I might as well just go ahead, throw some
- 20:09cleats on. At this point.
- 20:10I feel like I'm good. But him as a coach, like I, I
- 20:17like him. I feel like he fits our offense.
- 20:19Like I feel like he fits with the players.
- 20:22He's really just trying to get the ball to the playmakers and
- 20:26let them do what got them here. Like that's the best way I can
- 20:30describe it. Like looking at it, watching the
- 20:32practices and stuff like that. That's really what it looks like
- 20:35to me. He's just trying to get the ball
- 20:36to the playmakers and let them do what they do.
- 20:39And honestly, it it reminds me of my like a playbook from green
- 20:43run like a high school. That's basically what ours was.
- 20:45It was just I want to say get open, but I mean that's that's
- 20:49kind of what it was like. It was kind of just get the ball
- 20:52to the guys and let them do what they do.
- 20:55And I feel like that's what this offense now, I feel like that's
- 20:58what this looks like. So I mean, at least for the
- 21:01receivers, I can speak for us. We love to play with.
- 21:07I thought I was going to hear that, you know, when we're
- 21:10lining this up, we were like, all right, he he's going to like
- 21:13this playbook. He's going to want to talk about
- 21:15it a little bit. He's he's going to want to give
- 21:16it a little bit of a little bit of shine there.
- 21:18Because I mean, you know, when you look at it like air raid
- 21:22concepts are, are, are made for, for wide receivers to get the
- 21:25ball in their hands and do what they do best, put up big plays,
- 21:28put up some numbers, move the sticks, get in the end zone.
- 21:33So I, I love that you have that sentiment as well.
- 21:35So we're excited about that, excited about this offense.
- 21:38I think there's some big things that we can do.
- 21:40And I think, you know, I, I like that it is, you know, air raid
- 21:44concepts, but it's still a balanced attack that way.
- 21:47It's not it's not all on the wide outs to do everything you
- 21:51don't have you go have that run support, you go have a good mix
- 21:53in there. But I think the concepts are
- 21:55there for y'all to do some some real big things of this.
- 21:58I'm I'm really excited about that.
- 22:00You know, let's talk about this a little bit.
- 22:02I know we talked about a little bit before we punched it.
- 22:05You know, me and Curtis, we've been friends, you know, close to
- 22:0730 years, not a whole lot that we don't have on each other.
- 22:11So we, we, we can't, we can't ever cut this thing off because
- 22:15because we got too much dirt on each other.
- 22:16But I don't want to get you in trouble with any other
- 22:19teammates. But like who's the guy that
- 22:21you've kind of connected with since you've been in Blacksbury
- 22:24that you might have that type of bond in with in the future?
- 22:30I'll probably say it. It's probably like two people.
- 22:34Noah Jenkins on defense, before I knew him since like 8th grade,
- 22:40we had like mutual. We had a mutual friend and we
- 22:44all ended up in the group chat and then it became by the group
- 22:47that we tested every day. And it was, it was like we
- 22:50called it DBK because we was all receivers.
- 22:52We was like young and we was like at, we was like the top
- 22:57players in, in our areas. And it was like we was all
- 23:00starting to get offers and everything like that.
- 23:02And we, we just bonded like we was like the top players in our
- 23:05areas. Because he's from Richmond.
- 23:06He went to Highland Springs. Yeah, but I feel like it started
- 23:12there and then as we went through high school, we were
- 23:15still active in the group chat. Whenever we see we went to camps
- 23:18together, the whole group chat went to the, what was.
- 23:22It was a Rivals camp, I think our sophomore junior year.
- 23:26I had it my sophomore year 'cause that's when I had
- 23:28sprained my ankle and I didn't go to it.
- 23:30I ended up going to the Rivals camp that was in Baltimore like
- 23:34couple weeks later, but the whole group that was at that one
- 23:37camp. So like I'll probably say Noah.
- 23:39And then the second one would be Q reddish safety.
- 23:44He was once we moved out of dorms, I end up moving with him
- 23:48to our apartment and we've been close ever since then.
- 23:52Like that was probably 1 of like the faster bonds that I end up
- 23:56making, but between them still probably.
- 23:59Yeah, got it. All right.
- 24:02Is you Quentin y'all got to have more?
- 24:05Is it just y'all or you got two more roommates?
- 24:07Nah when we had first move that it was me and him.
- 24:09I live with Bullet now but Noah OK got it.
- 24:15Just two people man y'all lucky. I just live with like 4 people
- 24:19dorms and the dorms 4 in the dorms that was that was one of
- 24:25the person coming early if you moved in in the.
- 24:28Spring. You only got to stay on campus
- 24:30for a semester, so right after the spring game me and cute
- 24:34moved out there. We go.
- 24:37I'll blame you. So, yeah, you've been in
- 24:41Blacksburg just to, you know, about a year and a half now.
- 24:44I know you got some coaches that you're connected with, players
- 24:47you're connected with. Is there any anybody just, you
- 24:50know, even it could be related to football, but maybe not a
- 24:52coach or a player that's kind of made an impact on you since
- 24:55you've been in Blacksburg? My parents definitely have just
- 25:03because like when I first got here that was the first time.
- 25:06Like coming to college was the 1st for me for a lot of things.
- 25:11This was my first time, like not playing.
- 25:14I started as a freshman in high school.
- 25:16So coming to college and not playing like that was, it was
- 25:19weird for me 'cause it's like I felt like I was doing everything
- 25:22that I needed to do and it just almost felt like I wasn't
- 25:27working hard enough. But it's like in my mind I know
- 25:29that I'm working. So it was like just them being
- 25:31there for me and like being with me as I tried to navigate
- 25:34through that. That time of, OK, you got to
- 25:38take the backseat and learn. So when it is your turn, you'll
- 25:41be ready. Like that's where I got that
- 25:42mindset from. So I say them definitely.
- 25:49I love hearing that, love hearing that, I mean.
- 25:51Yeah, it's crazy man, cuz you know I ain't trying to put no
- 25:53shameless plugs in. Go ahead.
- 25:56Go ahead bro. No.
- 25:57I'll let you. I'll let you finish.
- 25:59You got a good thought going there, man?
- 26:03No, I was just saying I wasn't going to put no shameless plugs
- 26:05in or nothing, but just talking to your pops sometimes, man,
- 26:11like because my son is a sophomore in high school and
- 26:14sometimes it's like I have to call your pops and figure out
- 26:20some stuff or what's going on with you so I can talk to him.
- 26:23Because I'm like, hey man, I don't know what to say to this
- 26:25dude. He's getting on my nerves.
- 26:25I'm going to kick him out, You know what I'm saying?
- 26:28So, you know, I call and get some advice or, you know, he'll
- 26:33tell me some things like, you know, Keelan.
- 26:36Keelan did this. Just some good stuff, nothing
- 26:38bad. You know, Keelan did this or,
- 26:41you know, he did this on his own and he started doing this.
- 26:44You know, maybe you should talk to him this way because
- 26:47sometimes parents, man, well, a lot of times parents, we don't
- 26:50get it right. You know what I'm saying?
- 26:50There ain't no playbook. It could be an apparent.
- 26:53So a lot of times, man, we mess up or we, we, we may say the
- 26:56wrong thing or do the wrong thing, but when you got good
- 26:59people around you who aren't scared to share information with
- 27:03you, man, it makes it a little bit easier.
- 27:04So with your trials and tribulations of, of going off by
- 27:09yourself and being that far away from home and, you know, leaving
- 27:12school early and stuff like that, like I've learned some
- 27:15stuff. So appreciate you, man.
- 27:17Keep on doing what you're doing, my brother.
- 27:22Yeah, I mean, it's, it's always important when you when you have
- 27:24somebody that that's kind of your center, that's like your
- 27:27grounding spot when you're going through some tough times or
- 27:32fight adversity or going into new realms, like, you know,
- 27:37uncharted territory for you. It's like, all right, well, I've
- 27:39got somebody that I know can be my sounding board.
- 27:42That's that's going to support me, but it's also going to going
- 27:45to calm me out a little bit if I need to, you know, have a
- 27:48different mindset or, you know, maybe adjust my way of thinking
- 27:52a little bit to to kind of push through and persevere.
- 27:55So having that in your life and having that as somebody that's,
- 27:58you know, you are you are, has already been in your household
- 28:00and that you, you know, you know, and you, you already have
- 28:03a good relationship with that's, that's that's big time.
- 28:07Let's talk about that trip, though.
- 28:08So like, you know, the the drive from Virginia Beach out to
- 28:14Blacksburg is not easy when you got about 4 1/2 hours when
- 28:19you're on the road, you got to like a go to is or do you stick
- 28:22with music? Are you more of like a podcast
- 28:24person? Do you do any like audio books?
- 28:28What's the vibe? What's your go to on those long
- 28:31trips? No, it's definitely music.
- 28:36It really depends around like the time when I leave because of
- 28:41the drive, I'll be trying to time it because like got to go
- 28:44through the tunnel and for whatever reason it's like it's
- 28:48like people just see the bridge and just automatically forget
- 28:51how to drive. So it's just, it's just like
- 28:54realistically the drive is like 4 1/2, maybe 440.
- 29:01But like the tunnel adds like a hour.
- 29:04So really tech isn't even that far.
- 29:05Like it's, it's really not. But it's like like summertime
- 29:11when I would leave. We finished getting done with
- 29:13our workouts in the morning. I'll try to get on the rule and
- 29:16like either get there before the tunnel traffic started or after.
- 29:20So like I'll probably start off with like some rap or something.
- 29:26And then once the sun, the sun started going down, I'll call my
- 29:31mom on my other phone. And then like once I start
- 29:34getting sleepy, that's when the concerts start.
- 29:36I'll start playing all the old songs she used to play.
- 29:38And then when me and my sister was younger in the car, I start
- 29:41playing all those songs and I get to sing and she's like, you
- 29:43tired, ain't you? Yes I am, but I have two hours
- 29:46so. Everybody got to know right now
- 29:49that when he says all the old songs that that that she used to
- 29:52listen. To.
- 29:53Every song that we listen to in high school.
- 29:58No, Keelan I, absolutely. That's normal songs for us.
- 30:04Yeah, Keelan, I feel you. Sounds good. 100% Keelan, I feel
- 30:10you on the tunnel, man. We went down to Sand Bridge this
- 30:12year for family vacay, all right, in in Hampton Roads
- 30:16tunnel. We were like, all right, it's
- 30:17backed up. We're going to swing over.
- 30:19We're going to go to the other tunnel on 664.
- 30:21Swear to God, we get over there, everybody tapping brakes and
- 30:24it's just like, oh, I like living down there.
- 30:28Brian can attest to it. Brian's wife's fan that way.
- 30:31I just, I just made a trip. No.
- 30:33So they had me get off 64. They're like, yeah, get off 64,
- 30:38you know, go around Hampton and then get back on just before the
- 30:41tunnel. It'll be all right.
- 30:43And I get off. And man, I waited in that
- 30:45traffic to get back on to 64. I know it was standstill for
- 30:52like a good hour off off 64, then we finally got back on.
- 30:58The tunnel itself is never that bad.
- 31:00It's just everything like people don't, as soon as they say, oh,
- 31:03the tunnel's coming up, they just forget how to drive, just
- 31:05like you said. That's the problem.
- 31:06That's the problem. The tunnel is never that bad.
- 31:09As soon as you see the light when you're coming out the
- 31:11tunnel, all of a sudden everybody's doing more than the
- 31:14speed limit. And it's like, why would we even
- 31:16stop? There's nothing wrong.
- 31:18You'll be sitting and driving for an hour and the whole time,
- 31:21like you'll be sitting there and you'll be like looking like,
- 31:23damn, it's probably an accident. Host somebody.
- 31:25OK? Then as you start answering up
- 31:27people like they would have got the accident cleaned up by then.
- 31:31Then you start looking for clues.
- 31:32You start looking around like, I don't see anything.
- 31:35I don't see no smoke. I'm not hearing no sirens.
- 31:37Pass me nothing. You get up there, there's
- 31:40nothing you like. So what was I sitting for?
- 31:41You get as soon as you see the light in the tunnel, like soon
- 31:45as you get outside and the line goes from the solid white to the
- 31:48dotted lines, all of a sudden people turn into speed racers.
- 31:51And now, Now I'm 30 minutes from the house, even though
- 31:54technically I'm forwarded because everybody wants
- 31:56speeders. Yeah, it's bad.
- 31:58But the only upside, in my opinion, of going down is you
- 32:02stop at Pierce's Barbecue in Williamsburg, get you a nice
- 32:05sandwich and eat it. And yeah, on the way.
- 32:09But I'm gonna ask. This Pretty soon we gonna have
- 32:10Bucky's on the way in. Like the next year we gonna have
- 32:14Bucky's on the way. You're aware of that, right,
- 32:16Kaylin? Up on New Kent, up when you get
- 32:18back past New Kent, we get in Bucky's that's in the country,
- 32:22that's in the country when you're coming up 64 before you
- 32:24get to. Just before you get back to like
- 32:26the 295, the swing exit there, like just past the horse racing
- 32:31track. Yeah, I'm honest with y'all.
- 32:34Y'all saying the routes like 64. I don't know.
- 32:36I don't know where you guys are talking about.
- 32:39I don't know my mom she was like when you stop halfway is exit
- 32:44something something when you get off of this mom just send me a
- 32:46picture. I don't know.
- 32:49I can't type it on. Just tell me where I'm going.
- 32:50I'll put it in the map, but I'll.
- 32:52Figure it out. All I got right.
- 32:52Well, hold on, hold on, hold on. First of all, 64 to it's it's
- 32:58going to be a while for you to go back home.
- 33:01You got to go to Pierce's, though.
- 33:03It's some of the best pit cook BBQ.
- 33:05If you like BBQ brisket, whatever some of the best.
- 33:08It's in Williamsburg. I, I, I attest to it real quick.
- 33:13Look, I just went all that to ask these three questions.
- 33:15What's like when you you say you listen to current?
- 33:17Well, it's like your current song that winds up on every
- 33:19playlist. And what's old school that winds
- 33:21up on every playlist? Current song probably be Oh no,
- 33:35I listen to a lot, so it'll probably be like songs with an S
- 33:40from like I'll probably say the artist OK, more more so artists
- 33:47are probably like why be babyface Ray, no cap fat man.
- 33:57They would end up on like almost all my playlist and then like
- 34:01the old songs be like. I got to call my mom for this
- 34:10one. You put him on the.
- 34:12Spot you put you on the spot on that one.
- 34:14Yeah, I'm trying to think like, because a lot of the songs I
- 34:17don't know the names too. I just know like when she play
- 34:19it, I know the lyrics but I couldn't tell you.
- 34:20They buy, you do the lyrics. Let's see if we can play name
- 34:23that tune. Plus, old heads can remember
- 34:25those songs. Lord Curtis trying to make the
- 34:28man sing on here. I'm trying.
- 34:31To think like have fun, man. I'm trying to think like old rap
- 34:35songs, probably like Snoop Dogg, Doctor Dre, something like that.
- 34:45Who else? She played like.
- 34:48She played like baby. OK.
- 34:52OK, OK. You better not be Keelan.
- 34:55You better not be in that car. Listen no pretty girl rock.
- 34:58No, but look there, you got to hear, you got to hear me out.
- 35:03Were you tired and trying to stay up?
- 35:05Oh yeah, that's the ones that get you.
- 35:07I'm telling you, you roll the window down and all of a sudden
- 35:09life is good. You don't even realize you're
- 35:11sitting at the tunnel anymore. You just, you just sit in the
- 35:14car. You just having a concert.
- 35:16Yeah, yeah, I don't know why it always finds me one of my
- 35:20daughter's favorite songs. My daughter's 19, So one of her
- 35:23favorite songs is like the I can't even remember the the lady
- 35:26that sing, but it's on my Mama. It came out probably like 2
- 35:30years ago. Anytime I'm in the car, that
- 35:32song always sings to find the radio.
- 35:35Like I put that on my Mama. Like every time I'm in the car
- 35:40it finds me. So like you said, man, I could
- 35:42be like feel like I'm nodding off and that and that hit me.
- 35:45So it's like, OK, yeah, I got to wake up right here.
- 35:47It is. It's concert time.
- 35:49So I feel you on that. But hey, we going, we going, we
- 35:52going to go to something a little bit easier.
- 35:54I believe we always ask questions about food.
- 35:58So this was kind of a two-part question.
- 36:02Favorite meal from your mom's? Because we had to.
- 36:04We talk about mom and then your favorite place to eat in
- 36:09Blacksburg. OK, favorite meals for my mom?
- 36:16The Alfredo, the spaghetti she made, Big ziti, the chicken Mac
- 36:29and cheese. Black Christmas dinner?
- 36:31That's probably like the best dinner ever.
- 36:35You just named a lot of food, man.
- 36:37Yeah, man, I'm just thinking about this home, you know, I'm
- 36:40going to tell her. Come cook.
- 36:41Yeah, that's right. That's right.
- 36:44You'll tell her. We had that idea either.
- 36:46OK. Yeah, I'm just calling Ma.
- 36:49Can you can you come up here and just cook for like a week or
- 36:52something? That's.
- 36:54Right. My favorite place is eat and
- 36:56black birthday will probably be I like Kabuki the baji place.
- 37:01I like Kabuki PK's you. You're more of a wing person to
- 37:10PK's. You go with the, you know, with
- 37:12the wings. Yeah, PK's.
- 37:13The wings then like Chipotle, it used to be Zaxby's, but I don't.
- 37:18I don't know why they got rid of Zaxby's, but they did so.
- 37:21Yeah, that that that, that hurts the team there.
- 37:25That's that's back-to-back player interviews that have put
- 37:27Chipotle on the map. Keep going on the map.
- 37:32I think everybody we've interviewed, it's like 8 of 11
- 37:36Chipotle, Chipotle, and I'm guessing it probably goes to
- 37:40with what y'all were doing. Y'all were busy as heck.
- 37:42It's like I just want some beef. I maybe want a little sauce and
- 37:46some cheese and I won't go home. I feel like walking around for
- 37:49two hours. I just want to get my food and
- 37:51go home. It helped too because you know,
- 37:54like when you train this stuff, you got to maintain a certain
- 37:57weight so, so your body stays healthy and then and the safe is
- 38:00supposed to be. And like when, when I was
- 38:03talking to like our nutritionist and stuff and they like help us
- 38:07meal plan and they try and help us like pick out things that
- 38:11we'd like that we would like eating because that was one of
- 38:14my hardest things. I couldn't eat.
- 38:15I couldn't gain weight for anything because I just couldn't
- 38:17eat. So I had to find ways to like
- 38:20pick out stuff that I liked. So she was telling me she was
- 38:22like, what is what's like your favorite fast food?
- 38:24I'm like Chipotle. She's like, oh, you made this
- 38:26easy. Just get double of everything.
- 38:29You'll be good. So like, especially since camp
- 38:32started, I've been getting to vote every day.
- 38:35There we go. Every single it's around the
- 38:37same time. It's the same worker every time
- 38:39I'm going there, I'll go and like, you're back.
- 38:41Yes, I am. Let me get a do do.
- 38:47Do they already know your usual? Do they Do they got it down now?
- 38:51Yeah, sometimes I switch it up, but like it is, it's definitely
- 38:54one lady that works there and she was like, you want the same
- 38:57thing? Yes, yes I do.
- 39:02My God. What's up?
- 39:05Hey, I got one question that's. Kind of off man do.
- 39:08You got your do you got your your dog back up there yet?
- 39:11Nah, Nah, he come back when we get down.
- 39:15Can y'all hear me? Yeah, we got your tally.
- 39:19OK, got you. Go ahead.
- 39:22Came here not I was he he come back when we finished camp My my
- 39:27parents going to bring him back. OK.
- 39:31What kind of dog? I don't think they're going to
- 39:33let him come back, man. They're going to keep.
- 39:35Him. Yeah, my mom did say that.
- 39:39Yeah. What?
- 39:41What what kind of dog is he Keeling?
- 39:43A pit bull terrier. What's his name?
- 39:47Cartier. Oh, there we go.
- 39:50I like that. Different boys.
- 39:54Anything else? Because what?
- 39:56What time's practice tomorrow? Let's ask real quick.
- 39:58Are y'all about to hit a one of the mini camp breaks?
- 40:01Nah, today was the break. We start mini camp 4 tomorrow.
- 40:05Mini camp four starts tomorrow. Well, listen man, keep doing
- 40:11your thing. You have been up the last really
- 40:15it's been 50 minutes because we talked with them before we got
- 40:17on. You have been a pleasure to talk
- 40:20with the last roughly hour here. You are a very upstanding young
- 40:23man. Great things are going to happen
- 40:25to you regardless. Regardless, because I think you
