Transcript
- 0:12Welcome to Sometimes Their Side Eye, a podcast about two friends
- 0:17having real and unfiltered conversations about dogs and
- 0:20people. Listen as we talk about our
- 0:22lives with dogs, training, behavior, share some laughs and
- 0:27a whole lot of banter. I'm Heather.
- 0:30And I'm Christy, what are we talking about this week,
- 0:32Heather? This week we are going to talk
- 0:36about three things that we would tell our younger selves if
- 0:42possible. All dog related of course.
- 0:47Don't date that guy. He's not worth.
- 0:52It dog, dog. Related.
- 0:54Yes, yes, we are. We are going to stay dog
- 0:57related. We have had this topic on our
- 1:02list of things to talk about for like 4 years and for some reason
- 1:06just haven't gotten there. So Full disclosure, we have not
- 1:09shared with each other what our answers are.
- 1:14So I would be very curious to see.
- 1:18Are you going to play? Ditto on everything Heather
- 1:21says. That is just rude.
- 1:25That is rude. OK, I'm gonna make you go first.
- 1:28You go first. Christy, it's your topic.
- 1:30You go first. OK, one thing that I would tell
- 1:34my younger self if possible would be to not put so much
- 1:42pressure on how other people perceive your relationship with
- 1:49your dog. So we all, we're humans, we all
- 1:54think about whatever, what people think about us and
- 1:57whatever. But I would want to tell my
- 2:01younger self where I am now to be there then, because I my
- 2:09feelings about not not worrying or trying not to worry about
- 2:14what other people think about my relationship with my dog and how
- 2:17I'm training my dog and and different things like, Oh, I
- 2:21don't give a shit that my dog doesn't have a perfect heel when
- 2:24we're out for a walk. And you know, just all of that
- 2:26stuff. I think it would have in not
- 2:30even think it would have improved my relationship and my
- 2:34enjoyment of all of my dogs that I've had in my lifetime.
- 2:38So that is probably my number one thing that I would have
- 2:43would have told my younger self. And I think it kind of goes hand
- 2:49in hand with just being confident in what I'm doing and
- 2:55why I'm doing it and having confidence in my plan and who my
- 3:01dog is and who I am and how we fit together.
- 3:05And not worrying about how it may be perceived by someone else
- 3:10because none of us know the entire story of someone else's
- 3:14relationship. So I think that that's my #1.
- 3:20And that's a tough one because you really have to grow into
- 3:23that, to be honest. Like it is the person you are in
- 3:27your 20s versus the person you are in your 40s.
- 3:31There's so much growth in confidence and just being
- 3:36comfortable with yourself and who you are.
- 3:39That's a yeah, it's, it's tough. You can tell yourself at 20 like
- 3:43just. Don't care.
- 3:45But I do think there's you have to kind of grow into that a
- 3:49little. Bit there's an experience and a
- 3:51maturity and like all that comes with it.
- 3:54But listen, this is a dream world and this is what we wish.
- 3:58So that is my number one wish because I think, no, I know that
- 4:04that would have improved my relationships with my dogs as an
- 4:09adult. I mean as a kid too, but like my
- 4:12adult relationships with the dogs that I personally owned.
- 4:15For sure, yeah. So that's my first one.
- 4:17What's yours? I was thinking I would tell
- 4:21myself not everyone needs to know all of your opinions.
- 4:28Which is really ironic since we're talking about this on a
- 4:31podcast I need to write. I did.
- 4:34The irony was not lost on me. But yeah, I think I was so
- 4:40opinionated and I wanted everyone to know exactly what I
- 4:44thought all the time about everything.
- 4:50And that's a lot. And I, I do see that from other
- 4:55handlers. And sometimes they're not
- 4:58younger, sometimes they are. And I'm like, you know what?
- 5:02OK, that's your opinion and that's great.
- 5:05But nobody asked you either. And that was me.
- 5:09Nobody asked me. But I was like, oh, let me tell
- 5:11you what I think. And now I'm like, oh, I don't
- 5:16even believe a lot of those things.
- 5:18And but everyone had to hear about them at the time.
- 5:22Oh my gosh, when this weekend when we were at Fast Cat, so I
- 5:27was at the catch end of the track and our other friend was
- 5:34at the start line. So we had different experiences
- 5:38with the people who are around us.
- 5:40And I come walking down for us to kind of meet in the middle
- 5:45and go to the car. And this friend just starts
- 5:48flipping out about this woman who was at the start line, who
- 5:51was telling everyone her opinion, opinions about what
- 5:55they were doing with their dogs. And so our friend is like, who's
- 5:59this bitch think she is? And it was so funny because this
- 6:03she was like this woman over here telling this guy, you need
- 6:07to get your dog under control and you're going to tie your dog
- 6:10out and it's not going to be able to run and it's going to
- 6:12get a slow time and blah, blah, blah.
- 6:14Meanwhile, it's a 2 1/2 year old Doberman who's like ready to go
- 6:19at the drop of a hat every single minute of every single
- 6:21day. We were like dying laughing and
- 6:25she was just telling everybody what she thought about every
- 6:28single thing. She never learned that lesson,
- 6:30Christy, because she was like probably in her 60s.
- 6:33But it just made me think about your little lesson #1.
- 6:39Good. See, so I'm learning.
- 6:40So I know I was opinionated when I was younger.
- 6:43I know I was a lot. But I'm learning.
- 6:45I'm trying to improve. Your number one kind of goes
- 6:51alongside my number 2. OK, what's your #2?
- 6:55My number 2 is pick your battles.
- 6:58I spent so much time over the years, maybe not on purpose, but
- 7:09like getting into conversations with people that were never
- 7:13going to be going, that we're never going to go anywhere.
- 7:16And my intentions were always pure to help people.
- 7:20And I spent a lot of wasted time talking to people who were
- 7:26never, ever going to receive what whatever information I was
- 7:31giving. And over the years I have
- 7:34learned to sort of read the room and be like, well, are these
- 7:41people actually interested in what I have to say in my
- 7:44experience? Or are they just standing there
- 7:47and I'm preaching at them, which is also like a flaw for of mine.
- 7:52And pick your battles and save your breath and only share your
- 7:59knowledge with people who are truly interested in receiving
- 8:02it. So that's my #2.
- 8:07Which it's funny because my number 2 is, is sort of related
- 8:10to that too. Not totally, but mine was.
- 8:14Not everyone is going to share your passions, and that's OK.
- 8:19Oh. Interesting.
- 8:22Yeah, so I was passionate about everything, like everything I
- 8:26put my hands on. I'm like, this is my passion.
- 8:28No, this is my passion and I have the energy to be passionate
- 8:32about all the things. Isn't that the truth?
- 8:34But then I was very annoyed that everyone wasn't also on the same
- 8:41bandwagon as me. Well, this really matters.
- 8:44You should be passionate about it.
- 8:46Why are you not more concerned? Or why are you not more
- 8:49outspoken or why are you not whatever?
- 8:53And you know, everyone has different passions and that's
- 8:57what makes the world go round and and that's OK.
- 9:01Yeah, I like that because it is true.
- 9:03We all have the things that really matter to us and that
- 9:08that generally can't be the same or else the world would stop
- 9:13turning. I mean, we all need people to
- 9:14care about different issues and different things and have
- 9:17different experiences. That is the color of the world.
- 9:20So I, I agree with you, my third one is to kind of related to the
- 9:29first one, but give yourself and others grace and recognize that
- 9:36people's experiences individually really pushes them
- 9:43towards certain avenues. And that there are experiences
- 9:48that you can't even imagine you having that will come your way,
- 9:52that will change who you are and how you perceive things.
- 9:56And that you really need to give yourself and others grace.
- 10:02For example, I was always a person who was taught, raised,
- 10:08and then believed that once you have a dog, it's your dog
- 10:12forever, right? And that you've made this
- 10:15commitment to this animal. And no matter what, come hell or
- 10:19high water, you would live in a cardboard box.
- 10:21How many times have I said that in my 20s I would live in a
- 10:24cardboard box if I had to so I could keep my dogs And my 47
- 10:30year old self or myself in my 40s really does not have that
- 10:36belief system anymore for myself or for others and does not feel
- 10:42that that's even always the right move for the dogs.
- 10:45And so I have learned to give everyone grace about things like
- 10:51that, certainly other things as well, but that's just an example
- 10:55that I can think of that I've really changed my mind about
- 11:00and, and thought probably a. Little bit too.
- 11:04Strict and stringent about that one in my 20s.
- 11:09Yeah. And what's funny is a memory
- 11:12just came up today of that I apparently felt necessary to
- 11:16screenshot from several years ago.
- 11:20Yeah, and it was somebody had had was trying to rehome a dog
- 11:27that they had recently adopted from the shelter because their
- 11:30child was kind of like all over the dog and was not being did
- 11:35not have kind hands and and it was like a toddler or something.
- 11:39And they said this is too much. We would never expect a dog to
- 11:43to handle this. And The Who, the vile things
- 11:47people said to those people about rehoming.
- 11:52And I, I posted on whoever like reposted it.
- 11:57I I said thank goodness they're finding this out before this
- 12:03becomes a bite and the dog has to be put to sleep.
- 12:07Isn't that a great perspective? Glad that they are doing their
- 12:11best to find the dog a home that fits.
- 12:15And they didn't return it to the shelter.
- 12:16They're trying to rehome it themselves.
- 12:18Yeah, yeah. Which not saying they couldn't
- 12:21return it to the shelter, that's not what I mean, but like
- 12:24they're. They're trying to do.
- 12:25Everything that they can, yeah, they're.
- 12:27Trying to keep it out of the shelter system and just do the
- 12:30best they can. Yeah.
- 12:31And so, yeah, going along with that, yeah.
- 12:35Definitely giving yourself and others some grace, yeah.
- 12:39Yeah, yeah. But there was definitely a time
- 12:41when I did not understand why anyone would ever need to rehome
- 12:46a dog. Yeah, sure.
- 12:49What's your #3 your? Views on everything are going to
- 12:54change. Keep kindness at the forefront,
- 12:57whatever you believe. Giving grace.
- 13:03Literally every single view in my 20s that I had has changed in
- 13:09some way as I've grown, as I've experienced more, as I've really
- 13:15tried to consciously be kinder to people and animals and all of
- 13:21it. Yeah, I don't think we can go
- 13:23wrong, even if maybe we find later that, wow, that view was a
- 13:28little messed up or, oh, we did not have all the facts.
- 13:33If we lead with kindness, even if our view changes again, I
- 13:38don't think we're going to be in a bad.
- 13:40Place. Or regret our our previous
- 13:44beliefs. Yeah.
- 13:46Do you think that where you are today, we really are with our
- 13:53belief system about just a lot of things regarding dogs, but
- 13:57overall are very different than we were in our 20s?
- 14:01Like was it an evolution for you or can you think of significant
- 14:06milestones where you met someone or something happened that sort
- 14:11of made you go, Oh my gosh, Because I have a very
- 14:15significant event that I know that in my past that made me
- 14:19completely change so many of my beliefs.
- 14:23So I'm just curious how it is for you.
- 14:25Both. I think it's a combination.
- 14:27It's a slow evolution with significant events happening,
- 14:32for example, meeting you learning about ethical breeding.
- 14:36That's, that was such a paradigm shift and to have the patience
- 14:40to, I don't believe in this at all.
- 14:42I, I think all breeders are bad and there could be no positive
- 14:46breeders. And then having you be patient
- 14:49and be like, well, what about this?
- 14:50And what about this? And then that gives me the, the
- 14:54grace then to go to the next person and say like, Hey, This
- 14:57is why my my belief system changed too.
- 15:02And then little things along the way, like I really went from
- 15:05treat only to to more of a a punishment base, like a
- 15:14balanced, I guess a balance more balanced because I was treat and
- 15:17and punishment both. Using aversives and.
- 15:21Yeah, yeah. And because one, I wasn't
- 15:24achieving what I needed to through positive only and then
- 15:28also hearing all the stories of people who kept trying positive
- 15:33and it wasn't working. Yeah.
- 15:35Yeah, and I was like, oh, OK, this gives me compassion for
- 15:39them. Even though I've swung back to
- 15:43where I'm not using aversives, but it still gives me so much
- 15:47compassion for the people who do use aversive because.
- 15:53It's. Most of the time, I don't think
- 15:56they take it lightly. Yeah, they're living in that
- 15:59world. Gave me a perspective on that.
- 16:02Yeah, yeah. Which allows you to have better
- 16:05conversations with people because you're not closed off.
- 16:09Yeah. You know, you're, you do a very
- 16:11good job of leading with curiosity and being open to
- 16:15like, well, why or why do you do that?
- 16:18Or how is that helping you or what are your thoughts on this?
- 16:22So I think that also lends itself to you having these
- 16:27evolutions. I always think about, I went to
- 16:32Florida to volunteer with the Humane Society to help care for
- 16:37the dogs from a dog fighting bus, the 367.
- 16:41And I met someone there that completely like shook my life.
- 16:48And she was running a nonprofit where they were doing free spay
- 16:52and neuter and free medical care for people.
- 16:57And her perspective on giving people grace and, and why should
- 17:04someone keep a dog when it's not working for the dog and it's not
- 17:07working for the humans and a better home is out there.
- 17:10And who, who are we really doing that for?
- 17:13And why? Why should a homeless person
- 17:17who's giving great care to their dog not be allowed to keep their
- 17:20dog? And why should you know all of
- 17:24these things that were very compassion based dog ownership
- 17:30views. This person held them all.
- 17:33And I had never met a person like her before in my life.
- 17:36And I went on that trip and I met her.
- 17:40I knew about her beforehand, but then met her in person.
- 17:45I probably had a 20 minute conversation with her and it
- 17:48completely changed my life. And I've told her before, you
- 17:53had a significant impact on who I am now.
- 17:58That is a huge, huge moment where a lot of my belief systems
- 18:03were blown up. And I was like, gosh, this is so
- 18:07logical what you're saying. Oh, my goodness.
- 18:11Yeah. So.
- 18:12But I do think that there are other things that have evolved
- 18:15over time for me as well. If I could kind of maybe, if I
- 18:20could maybe give a bonus. Oh I love give a bonus.
- 18:24Because I was thinking of things I would have changed, but what I
- 18:29would tell myself is that the people who you're going to
- 18:36surround yourself, who are positive and kind, are going to
- 18:41make a huge impact in your life. Dive into that.
- 18:46Yeah. Because we we really were lucky
- 18:49to volunteer with people who gave grace, who like kindness,
- 18:56really led. And then when we were
- 18:58volunteering, we we were able to not get wrapped up in that
- 19:01negative spiral that so many other people got wrapped up in
- 19:06and then burned themselves out with.
- 19:08We were able to see kind of the light, you know, the silver
- 19:12whining of situations and give grace and and that gives you a
- 19:16lot of hope when you're working in rescue.
- 19:19That is interesting you say that because since I've been here in
- 19:24Arizona, I've been involved in multiple rescue groups and then
- 19:29also shelter volunteering, which was a group of us were a part of
- 19:33a, a nonprofit as well. As I think about those different
- 19:37groups and kind of those time periods in my life, the positive
- 19:43people that I connected with during those time periods are
- 19:48still in my life today. And it is like we glommed onto
- 19:52each other and we're like, you're like a beacon among these
- 19:57negative people. Who?
- 20:00Don't align with my belief system.
- 20:03Can we be friends? But I mean, going back now, the
- 20:10very first group that I was a part of is was back in 2012
- 20:17starting and two of the people who are in my life today, what
- 20:23is that 14 years later are from that time period.
- 20:27But those two people are, you know, people who really kind of
- 20:34grew and, and evolved with me, but like you said, LED with
- 20:39kindness. And so we did sort of group
- 20:43together and kind of our soul together today.
- 20:45It's true. I, I really love that we sort of
- 20:48all found each other. It's not just about dogs.
- 20:51It's also inherently who we are and, and how we feel about dogs
- 20:56and, and our relationship with our dogs and, and our really
- 21:01core belief systems. Absolutely.
- 21:04Yeah, it's important who you surround yourself with.
- 21:08It is very much so. And and also important to be
- 21:13open. Yeah.
- 21:15Because you might have epiphanies like we have.
- 21:18Yeah, an epiphany could be right around the corner.
- 21:23I love it. Well, can't go back in time, but
- 21:26I still say it's good things to think about.
- 21:28What would you actually tell your younger self?
- 21:31Yeah. And think about maybe to a good
- 21:35little reminder here and there of the things that are important
- 21:39to us. Absolutely.
