- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Let me ask you a weird question.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Have you ever tried taking a cold shower?
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Apparently, cold showers are all the rage these days.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: If you want to spend a couple of hours going down a YouTube rabbit hole, get onto YouTube and watch a few videos where people experiment with taking cold showers and then talking about the positive effects like helping them wake up faster or having more energy or putting different satellites in orbit, or you know, there's about a million things that people attribute to taking cold showers.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Some of them are probably legit, uh, maybe some of them aren't.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I have no idea.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: But I can tell you that it does work, even though I don't take a cold shower very often.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: When you take a cold shower, it definitely does wake you up and give you more energy.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: So if you ever watch any of those videos or you decide to experiment with cold showers yourself, you'll find that just jumping into the cold shower and being all in is a lot more effective than gradually sticking one body part in the shower at a time.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: It's better just to get the discomfort over with as soon as possible and get on with the cold shower so you can experience the benefits of it.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Now, the same is true for writing.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Writing takes mental energy and we sometimes have trouble getting started.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: We piddle around for a few minutes, we have a few false starts, and then we decide the effort isn't worth it.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Instead, I challenge you to treat your writing just like you would treat a cold shower.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: I like to follow the 30-second rule when I don't feel motivated.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: The idea is just to write for 30 seconds without stopping.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And the reason is that 30 seconds is enough time to switch your mental focus and get you into the groove a little bit.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: You know, it doesn't work really to only write whenever you feel like it.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: There's a million things to distract us, and there's a million excuses we can offer for avoiding writing.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So try writing for just 30 seconds to give yourself a little bit of a jump start whenever you're not feeling motivated.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, here's today's challenge.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Are you willing to jump in and write for 30 seconds to kickstart your writing?
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Give it a shot.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Alright, as always, thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
