- 0:01Dana. One thing still bugging me? Why didn't you ever come back to
- 0:05pick me up? I kept putting it off, and then I was just
- 0:09too embarrassed. Sorry, I never called him. I was too busy with
- 0:13my fifteen Native wives. Fifteen that sounds like a lot of sex, I
- 0:24said, wives, not girlfriends. Four Finger Discounted. Welcome to Fourfinger Discount,
- 0:53the podcast where we certainly do not have an annual tradition to commit suicide
- 0:57at Christmas time. This week we hit the review episode jb F zero one.
- 1:00It is Simpson's Christmas Stories. I am Dando and I am Guy and
- 1:04speak for yourself, Dan, No, No, that's not true. Life
- 1:07is worth living, especially when you've got a really good episode of The Simpsons
- 1:11to talk about. Because I enjoyed this immensely. This was a very very
- 1:17very early Christmas gift in April. I was so surprised because I went into
- 1:22this going it's another one of those trilogies where they just take off old stories
- 1:25that no one gives a shit about. I mean that not only gives a
- 1:26shit about Jesus. That's I didn't know what stories are going to be,
- 1:29but I thought they're gonna be you know how we had those stories where it's
- 1:32though on that train with the with the hobo and it was always oldest Oh
- 1:34my, no one cares about that, the non cannon or whatever. But
- 1:38this just felt to me like a Simpsons Christmas variety hour. You had a
- 1:42good mix of everything. You had the retelling of of the Jesus Birth,
- 1:46you had the random like you original story with Santa and Burns and grand but
- 1:52then you just had like to take on the Nutcracker at the end like a
- 1:53little musical. It was such a good blend of just variety. I thought
- 1:57it was really fun. I was really impressed with this episod. I was
- 2:00really surprised by this episode because I think I went in exactly the same way
- 2:05as you, thinking yawn. I think that was the word that was bringing
- 2:09my life. I'm gonna have to treasure there is and it's going to be,
- 2:13you know, really run of the mill Christmas Eve kind of stuff.
- 2:16But no, they showed a fair bit of imagination, a fair bit of
- 2:21ingenuity. Yeah, everyone seemed to get folded in in really interesting ways.
- 2:27Yeah. I know, I had a really good time with this one,
- 2:30so I didn't realize each segrement also had its own title. So the first
- 2:34one was the First Doel, the second was I Saw Grandpa cussing Sandy Clause,
- 2:38and the third one was the Nutcracker Sweet as opposed to sweet, which
- 2:44comes across more like a South part title of he asked me. But yeah,
- 2:46I just enjoyed the really, like you said, original, It was
- 2:49not that its went and got right, here's the tale. Let's just replace
- 2:52the carriages with Simpsons, with Simpson's characters. No, like this, they
- 2:54had the original story in the middle of the end was it was a take
- 2:58on the Nutcracker, but it was also Simpson. I the point where it
- 3:00was like very What I liked about the most of it, because the final
- 3:02sevement was my favorite. Where I like the most about that was it just
- 3:06really captured Christmas, even Springfield, and I really like that. I get
- 3:10where you're coming from, certainly because well everyone knows that Dando and the Christmas
- 3:15season go hand in hand, frolicking down the lane. I haven't named my
- 3:20daughter Holly. Was that the reason for Christmas? It wasn't. We just
- 3:25liked the name Holy. Yeah, just like a lovely name, and he's
- 3:29a lovely little girl, so they fit together nicely. I'm very impressed with
- 3:34what you said about like a variety hour, because that's what it felt like
- 3:39that in a good way. I mean shows like say The Brady Bunch,
- 3:43or things that had like a cast of your frenzy like you, I'd like
- 3:46to hang out with all the family that's better than yours that you like to
- 3:50watch on TV would do things like that. I feel like seventies TV Special,
- 3:54didn't it. That's yeah, that's exactly what I mean by that,
- 3:59And especially with the first segment, the whole retelling of the Birth of Jesus,
- 4:05That's exactly what it felt like to me. And I love the way
- 4:08how they sort of they really seamlessly and cleverly folded in all your favorite characters
- 4:15and in ways that made sense as well. Yeah, I mean, whether
- 4:18it's Burns being King Herod or Chief Wigham being sort of the head of the
- 4:24Roman soldiers who were doing his dirty work, everything seemed to work quite nicely.
- 4:29And no, it's just very very It gave me a warm little blow.
- 4:33My favorite segment, however, was the middle one. I enjoyed that
- 4:36a lot. That was also very I just like the fact that it was
- 4:40an original story now part of the Aller. Jean says that he wishes at
- 4:43the end of that segment they didn't have the bit with Santa fe back into
- 4:46the real world like and present day. He would just ended with the with
- 4:49the watch because it would have been more sentimental. But yeah, the end
- 4:53of that was one of my favorite moments. I'd love the wives bit that
- 4:59I just thought, just your classic you know, you know there must be
- 5:01a lot of sex, I said, wives, not girlfriends. We did
- 5:06an episode of Speaking of the Hill recently where Hank and the guy in the
- 5:09music shot we're talking about making jokes about the wife. I never do it,
- 5:13but it's just, you know, it's just your classic husband gag,
- 5:15the whole ball and changing. I can't recall ever having done it him.
- 5:20No neither, no no reason too. We have no reason to do.
- 5:25We We have lovely ladies at home. I think we're just SAPs. We
- 5:28are. But thank you all guys for chutting to the show this week.

- 6:03Yeah? What yeah, no, but we would very much appreciate it.
- 6:09It would, as we say, help keep the lights on here at four
- 6:13finger discount, h not even kid the lights on. It might allow us
- 6:15to buy flashier, brighter light bulbs. Indeed. Yeah. And plus no,
- 6:20when we're trying to get our new sponsors or new guests, we can
- 6:24say, look, five hundred people thought we were worth five stars. Hey,
- 6:29my favorite. But what were your favorite moments from from Simpsons Christmas Stories?
- 6:32Mister Davis, Well, if we're talking about the first segment, now,
- 6:38forgive me, I'm the first duel. First of all. Yes,
- 6:41I'm trying to get my memory sharpened. Yes, I'm pretty sure that you
- 6:44remember the first segment. Say it probably they please the first all right?
- 6:51I was initially like because there was a pretty dopey slash lazy gag about I'm
- 6:57trying to watch the Orange Bowl and he's watching the Bowl of Oranges. I'm
- 7:00like, that's not that great. Then almost immediately after that, Homer realizes
- 7:05that baby Jesus slash Bart is into a bit of the old physical comedy,
- 7:10and we go into a bit of a three Stooges riff, and I just
- 7:14laughed a hell of a lot more than maybe I should have had. Oh
- 7:16wise man ee. And then they go to the Stooges sort of antics,
- 7:20which I thought was great. I just like, oh wise man eye.
- 7:26But not too long after that, they're talking about well people use it as
- 7:32a an exclamation or not, maybe not a curse. But you know,
- 7:38when you're something you're first about Jesus, Mary and Joseph to fold it into
- 7:43the line of like, Jesus, Mary and Joseph, what a great family
- 7:46unit. I just liked it. It felt great. It felt like just
- 7:49a you could you could feel the good will in the writer's room. When
- 7:54that, when that was sort of jotted down, I was like, you
- 7:57did well there, Yeah, yeah, it didn't feel forced. It all
- 8:01organic. Yeah. Yeah. Now I'm trying to think what I am enjoyed
- 8:03in the next one. I'm sorry, I saw Santa cussing. I saw
- 8:09clause I think I mean it is I saw grabbed by cussing Santa Claus is
- 8:13what it's called me. Yes, Listeners of our various programs will know that
- 8:18one thing that brings joy to Guy's cold black heart, that makes it increase
- 8:24three sizes, and not just via cholesterol, is fight his vice. Love.
- 8:28It can't get enough of hearing fight his vis and just about any context
- 8:33that's that's great. So when when Grandpa's brother Cyrus, who you know we
- 8:39have not heard from and we will never hear from again after this story,
- 8:43Cannon, just when he popped up and his like time to go fat in
- 8:48the Pacific, Yeah, just give me a little bit more that that's great.
- 8:52Um. Yeah, so I enjoy that very much. And um,
- 8:56I don't know, I guess we can blow the ending. I'm sure that
- 8:58anyone who watched who's listening to this podcast will have watched this episode, but
- 9:03just the very listen to this podcast and you don't, and you aren't aware
- 9:05that we spoiled the episodes. By this point you might want to rethink your
- 9:11priority. Yeah, but just the very end of the what was it?
- 9:16Sorry? The nutcaker of the nutwork is sweet. Yes, um, I
- 9:22think both you and I in recent episodes when we're talking about season seventeen and
- 9:26maybe a little earlier of The Simpsons, like, oh, it's such a
- 9:30dick, You're always getting it wrong. You don't deserve Marge all this kind
- 9:33of stuff. And when it comes to the very end where oh my,
- 9:35I haven't got Marge to Christmas present, and he sort of runs around.
- 9:39He now, he's doing his best. He's a fine one for yeah,
- 9:41but it's just not working out, and he finally has to come home a
- 9:43bit ashamed. Luckily, Marge knows her husband well enough that he probably would
- 9:50forget to get her a present, so his so Marge's gift to Homer is
- 9:54a gift for Homer to gift to Marge. And just the picture of it,
- 9:56you know, the picture in the box of Homer in a Santa Claus
- 10:01outfit and Marre just looking stoked to be sitting on his laps like this is
- 10:05apex Homer and Marges. You know, this is how the relationship should be.
- 10:07It's how any relationship should be. Everyone should have. You know,
- 10:11if you've got someone in your life, hopefully you've got a photo of the
- 10:16two of you where you look at you're looking at and go, oh,
- 10:18yeah, that's that's us. That's that's how we should be. And I
- 10:22don't know. I just I had a smile on face and I won't denied
- 10:28a slight tear in my eye. Yes, I hundred percent agree. And
- 10:31it was It was interesting because normally, if Homer forgets a present for Marge,
- 10:35right, we'd be like, oh, what a shitty husband. But
- 10:37the difference here was I feel like in other episodes he would have just gone,
- 10:41oh, well next time, but he was. He was ashamed.
- 10:45He raced out, he tried to find the present, and when he got
- 10:46home he was embarrassed and he thought, oh god, I can't believe I've
- 10:50done this to her. And then she gives him the present and it's just
- 10:52like it was just so wholesome, and it's like, ah, I know
- 10:56there will be some attractors out and say, oh, he was a shit
- 10:58husband for getting in the first place. The way it all played out,
- 11:01I really liked it. I think the message you take away from it is
- 11:07you'd be fortunate if you if you have a partner who knows you better than
- 11:09you know yourself. Yes, yes, they're a good team, and it's
- 11:13like, oh, yeah, they are a good team. I wish we
- 11:15had more good team margin Homer, but not the Homer that we've been getting.
- 11:18It goes to show they can still do it. So why are you
- 11:24doing this? But what did you enjoy? What were your favorite? Just
- 11:30one more thing that that final segment, the Nutcracker segment that felt like Golden
- 11:33ear a Simpsons Don't You Reckon? I honestly felt it felt like every gag
- 11:37worked, everyone was there for a reason. It was just it was the
- 11:39best of season seventeen so far. I reckon this this episode. I would
- 11:43have to agree with you on that. I mean, like I said,
- 11:46your favorite segment was the last one. My favorite was the second one.
- 11:50But the second one also felt I mean, and so did the first one.
- 11:52It really felt like this wouldn't be out of place in season eight nine
- 11:58ten. Yeah, it really, but I enjoyed so that no one will
- 12:03ever speak or right of this. Again, that's like it's the obvious gag,
- 12:07But sometimes the obvious gags are the ones that worked the best. Cirrus
- 12:11with his wives at the end, I said, wives, not girlfriends,
- 12:13and I really enjoyed for I know you don't like really, but I loved
- 12:16the dream sequence where you know, he's carving a turkey with the family pans
- 12:20out. He's actually asleep in his shack pans out. He isn't drunken together.
- 12:26That was okay, that's good use of Willie. Yeah, and they're
- 12:28so frequent, you know, often there's bad use of Willie, usually in
- 12:33my place. Anymore brain busters? All right, it's time for the blockbuster
- 12:39brainbuster, mister Davis. Okay, original this episode was December eighteenth, two
- 12:43thousand and five. What do you think so number one? I believe I've
- 12:48already had mentioned this last week Number one King Kong that was on the top
- 12:52three last week. Chronicles Narnia is still in number two, number three,
- 12:54that was a new one. And the clue for you is Keaton. Keaton
- 12:58at the end of two thousand and five. Okay, then I'm trying to
- 13:03Yeah, I'm casting my mind back to two thousand and five. And naturally,
- 13:09if we're thinking of Keaton, we tend to think of Michael Keaton,
- 13:11don't we Yes, But I don't think I don't think he had anything high
- 13:15profile out around this time, So we must go to another Keaton, the
- 13:20second most famed Keating, although who opinion is very unless something to do with
- 13:24Diane Keaton. I'm sure now I was thinking, is it? I was
- 13:28trying to think when did the romantic comedy Something's Got to Give come out with
- 13:33her and Jack Nicholson. I'm not too sure that I think it might have
- 13:37been before two thousand and five. But what's what's what I'm thinking of?
- 13:43That has Um that he won the Oscar for that's as good as it's get.
- 13:45That's because they gets. That's what I'm thinking of. Yeah, and
- 13:46that was Nactually that was like ninety seven on ninety eight or something. Um.
- 13:52Also it also started Sarah Jessica Parker. I think I know what you're
- 13:56talking about. I think I know what you're talking about. This is one
- 14:01of those movies that's been reclaimed recently. As you know, you tend to
- 14:03do when you're twenty years down the line, you know what's really good that
- 14:07movie, and people who were there at the time go, it's not not
- 14:09that good and you were four when it came out, or you know.
- 14:16In this case, I think imagine, I imagine that a few people were
- 14:18like teenagers or something like that and going, oh, well, it's a
- 14:24it's a startlish, grown up romantic comedy, and I can really relate to
- 14:26this character. This movie is called The Family Stone. It is indeed,
- 14:30yes, am I right? You are? Indeed, so you don't recognize
- 14:33that good I remember seeing it and hating it. Hating it. Yeah,
- 14:39I think it's meant to be a kind of not anti romantic comedy. But
- 14:43it's like all these characters are complicated and flawed, and it's like, now
- 14:46these characters are annoying. Okay, I don't like being around any of them.
- 14:50But it is one of those movies where occasionally you'll see people on Twitter
- 14:54or social media going Christmas time, Time for the Family Stone. It's like,
- 14:58well, no, it's time for a lump of and you're stocking.
- 15:01What's a good movie? Like Elf? Next question? You there eating the
- 15:05Beast? Yep, mister Davis, that's right. That is the trivia intro,
- 15:09which means it's time to read out the shout outs of our incredible supporters
- 15:13on our four figure discount Patreon channel. We've got some newbies to the four
- 15:16figured discount family this with mister Davis. We've got Ben Weatherburn, Katherine Larson

- 15:46you're holding your finger up. What do you have for us? What?
- 15:48Well? I would just wondering are we going to be sharing a little bit
- 15:50of airtime with mister E j O n Sometime in the near future. Yeah,
- 15:54he's going to be coming on our podcast to review, but the think
- 15:56in a week or two and a couple of weeks, so listen out for
- 15:58that one in your feed. So that's going to be a good time.
- 16:02Also, I hope you guys enjoyed our chat with one Jeff Loveness last week.
- 16:06How fun was that, mister Davis. That was pretty red in Ye
- 16:11I knew bff Jeff Loveness. Loveness love more and something we should say.
- 16:17Yeah, that was great chat. We was so so thrilled to get the
- 16:21screenwriter of ant Man and the Wasp, Colon Quantumnia and the upcoming Avengers King
- 16:26Dynasty, just on the line for about an hour or so talking about his
- 16:30creative process, his inspirations, his love of The Simpsons, and well all
- 16:34the episode Bark gets hit by a car. We died pretty deep into it
- 16:37and mind a few diamonds and gold nuggets, I reckon. Yeah, what's
- 16:41interesting about that if you haven't listened to the interview yet, was that that
- 16:45was the first episode of The Simpsons that he ever saw, and he didn't
- 16:48realize that untill he started watching it for the review because he picked it it
- 16:49was either it was either Bark gets hit by a car or a fish caught
- 16:52Salmons I actually preferred to an older one. And then he told us the
- 16:56interview, Oh wait, it was the first that that was the connection you
- 16:57had with that episode was the first one ever saw. Plus it's the first
- 17:00appearance from Phil Hartman, so that was really great as well. And we're
- 17:03sort of tossing up do we pring up Jonathan Majors? Nn, let's not's
- 17:06bring up Jonathan Majors. It sounds like everyone else was bringing up Jonathan Majors
- 17:10because that man is getting dropped like like a bad habit. Yes, it's
- 17:15indeed, um head. His career is definitely going to become one of Troy
- 17:19McClure. He just needs, you know, in twenty years time to do
- 17:23a remaker Planet of the Apes and live musical. It'll be funny if you're
- 17:27back maybe, but I'm Jonathan Major that you might remember me such movies as
- 17:32Greed three and Quantuminia. But the tweet all supporters of our Patreon channel,

- 18:22we get, the less chance guys gonna have to spend Christmas Eve with raccoons
- 18:26in the dumpster. Wouldn't be so bad. That makes let look kind of
- 18:30cozy, then that little ugly sweaters. I know, like this is adorable,
- 18:33hanging stuff off the off the line. Yeah, it's nice. This
- 18:37was a nice episode. It was indeed, Yeah, I really captured the
- 18:40Christmas Because we've had a couple of Christmas episodes in the last few seasons.
- 18:44I felt like this one truly captured the Christmas vibe, didn't it? What
- 18:48you? Yeah, I mean, what's the aspirational Christmas? Zybe? I
- 18:52mean, of course we're you know, damn under here in Australia, we
- 18:56have warm Christmas. I think growing up, you know, popular cultures to
- 19:00teach you you know what's nice from Christmas? Cuddling up warm sweater's, a
- 19:03chest that's roasting on an open fire, all that kind of stuff, And
- 19:07I don't know, this gave you that warm and cuddly vibe. Well,
- 19:10it really, like you were saying earlier about the seventies variety shows, it
- 19:14felt like the kind of show you would have sat down with the family in
- 19:15nineteen seventy seven and watched this, you know, season's Christmas special and just
- 19:22for a little time, just for a half an hour or so, you
- 19:25can stop being at each other's throats exactly. Yeah, yeah, just enjoy
- 19:29the Christmas feeling together? All right, what's your first question for me?
- 19:34When the Roman soldiers are charging in on the major What gospel is being written?
- 19:41Who was writing a gospel at that stage? Ah? Was it Michael?
- 19:45It was Matthew, Matthew Matthew. See, I'm not a religious person.
- 19:48I just I've never read I'm assuming you've read the Bible. I've never
- 19:51read the Bible, not from cover to cover. No, some people read
- 19:55it all the time. They can just quote pages. I'm just like,
- 19:57hey, that's what you want to do, go for a I just I've
- 20:00never done it. Yeah, I've always I've always thought that I am an
- 20:04idiot for not doing I've always thought of thought, surely everyone, at some
- 20:07point, every mature adult has at least flipped through the Bible. No,
- 20:15I'm not. I'm not laughing. It's got I would just love that.
- 20:18Yeah, I don't know anyone who's read the laugh. Yeah. I know.
- 20:22You were raised quite religiously, though, aren't you. Oh No,
- 20:25not really. We went to church every Sunday. But I mean it's not
- 20:29like we were saying grace at every meal or anything like that. It was
- 20:32just like it's Sunday, We're going to church. Otherwise we're going to hell.
- 20:34Yeah, okay. My first question is what was the type of battery
- 20:40in them? In a special that was the Energizer Ultra It was indeed,
- 20:45yes, oh so cold. What's your next one? You may have been
- 20:49watching with the subtitles on this all you have to be in a ficionado of
- 20:52nineties, not in thirties big band music. But what is the tune that
- 20:56plays when Saris opens his watch. That's a American tale, Five of the
- 21:04that's five of the Jewish Mouse. No, that's it's actually American patrol patrol
- 21:11and it was it was American something. It was American woman. Yes,
- 21:17who was who was it by Glenn Miller? Glenn Miller? That's right.
- 21:19Yes. My next question is which to reindeer go missing? Is it Donna
- 21:27in Blitzen? No, well he I think he yells those ones at the
- 21:32start, but it's the one that's a star. And yeah, when I
- 21:36was looking through my notes before we were doing this, I'm like, there
- 21:38were the other two reindeer, and one of them is Rudolph I never much,
- 21:41and I've forgotten the other one. It's not Donna a Blitzen because that's
- 21:44what we just mentioned, not comment Prancer. Of course, Prance is gonna
- 21:52go missing that guy's flighty. What is the name of Burns's gal back home,
- 22:00Adette? That is Bernardette. Yeah. I thought that segment just worked
- 22:03in a sense that it almost like it was just a callback to you know,
- 22:07the Healthish episode, wasn't it? Burn Yeah? Yeah, I really
- 22:12like that. My next question for you is what was on the tie that
- 22:15Bart was going to buy for Homer one of your questions. You're looking at
- 22:18your smiling bets. It's wide load. Yeah, I like that. Yeah,
- 22:22we have one more in each in I've got one more, pretty easy
- 22:26one. But you know, do you have any more? Fore before?
- 22:27I got one more for me. If you want me, let me throw
- 22:30it at you. And it's actually that who was throwing snowballs at at Krusty's
- 22:37crotch? Oh shit, I just assumed it was kids in the audience.
- 22:38Who was it? It was Martin Luther King Junior and astronaut John Glenn,
- 22:45so they laugh. Were they throwing the snowballs or were they just guests?
- 22:48I thought that I was just guests. I thought that was ah okay.
- 22:52Well, as they say on game shows what Wow, I failed completely But
- 22:59anyway, but really maybe maybe they were. Maybe I'm wrong, because that
- 23:02would be hilarious if the other one there's a shipload of snowballs. It wasn't
- 23:07deep And yeah, I wouldn't put it past one of the great civil rights
- 23:10leaders at our time and you know, one of the pioneering astronauts. But
- 23:12maybe not. And my final question is what does it say on Mo's little
- 23:18chest plate? He writes a note tag? Is it? I was about
- 23:22to say no organs for you, but I think it's no one gets my
- 23:23organs. Yes, so, wasn't it. There's no reason to live but
- 23:29reasonly but no one gets his organs though, So look, it runs a
- 23:33very close second beyond the all time you know um of of Mo's suicide notes.
- 23:40No funeral, no funerals. That's the greatest, isn't it. That's
- 23:44such, that's that's just a meme before memes were even a thing. Just
- 23:49the other no funeral, brilliant. That's always pique moly Because I'm like,
- 23:59I'm usually down on like, you know, gags about committing suicide things like
- 24:02that, but sometimes I just work they really do. And I mean,
- 24:06this is a. This reminded me of an earlier time, a time when
- 24:12I'm gonna t I'm gonna phrase this incorrectly or inelegantly, but when people were
- 24:17less hung up on suicide or there were more gags about it. But essentially
- 24:21those gags always had the resolution like life, life is actually worth living.
- 24:26Yeah, you know, they sort of made fun of or made line of
- 24:29the factor like most we'll just you know, have a noose or walk into
- 24:33traffic or something like that. People still say it, but sometimes some people
- 24:37say it now he's just like my lettle life of that. Yeah, here
- 24:41sort of doomers all the times ago kill me, I want to do well.
- 24:45We we had, we had the show just shoot Me. I think,
- 24:47as we mentioned where we discussed it in the past, Yeah, precisely.
- 24:49I mean, yeah, this was a prime time sitcomy. You would
- 24:52just he was so fed up with your life. He wanted to someone to
- 24:55just shoot you. But but what was your point going to be? Don't
- 24:57tuck your point? Did you get you? Did you get you? Oh
- 24:59no, no, I think I got it out that the not very well.
- 25:03Clearly, the resolution of such gags was always oh no, no,
- 25:11no, Life's actually worth living. What I liked about this too was that
- 25:17Christmas isn't necessarily always a happy time for everybody, you know, so there
- 25:21is the element of people who feel alone and sad and down during the holidays
- 25:25when they set everybody else so happy and with their families. So it made
- 25:27sense to include that as well, you know, like, yeah, it
- 25:30was morbid, but it's also what happens at Christmas time. Unfortunately, they're
- 25:33right, but there is a segment of the people of the community out there
- 25:37that don't like Christmas for those reasons. To those folks, we say,
- 25:41give it a week or so, the whole New year is going to kick
- 25:44in, hit that reset button and subscribe to four Finger Discount. You'll be
- 25:47fine. Well ye oh yeah, that's implied. Interestingly, this is the
- 25:52three hundred and sixty fifth episode of The Simpsons, right, which means that
- 25:55now you have an episode of four Finger Discount for every single day the year,
- 26:00so you can listen to an entire year's worth, one per day.
- 26:03I mean, we've got other episodes when we skipped forward and things like that,
- 26:04but if you if you go in chronological order, we've got from if
- 26:07you start on day one, Simpsons Christmas Special, you know all the way
- 26:11through. It's not funny. It starts with the Simpsons Christmas Special and end
- 26:15at the end of the year with the Simpsons Christmas Stories. You'd think they'd
- 26:18have that in mind. It's almost like it was planned. Yeah, it's
- 26:22odd had that happened, But I thought it was quite an interesting anyway.
- 26:25Yeah, listeners, you've now got a whole year four fingered Discount put it
- 26:29near ears. Do you love Bob's Burgers? Of course you do. Who
- 26:33doesn't. Well, what if I was to tell you that if you supported
- 26:37your Pal's Guy and Dando for just a dollar a month, you could help
- 26:40us finally launch a weekly Bob's Burgers podcast. Yes, we've set ourselves the
- 26:44goal of launching the new show once we hit a thousand supporters, and we're
- 26:48currently sitting at three hundred and fifty, so you know, there's still a
- 26:51way to go. But if you've enjoyed the thousand plus hours of concept we've
- 26:53chucked out over the last eight years, you can show your support by joining
- 26:56the four finger Discount family today and actually make a reality. So go ahead,
- 27:00help us reach our goal and finally launched that Bob's Burgers Podcast by going
- 27:03to patreon dot com slash four figure discount. You have the parent inside you
- 27:07right now, so use it. All right, mister Davis, Let's get
- 27:15into a review of Simpson's Christmas Stories. The original air date was December eighteenth,
- 27:18two thousand and five. It was written by Don Payne and Don Payne
- 27:22I believe was nominated for an Emmy for this, but he lost to the
- 27:26Italian Bob. Another fun episode of The Simpsons had a couple of games back
- 27:30to back. They're on the way up season seventeen. They're on an upswing
- 27:34the Yeah, they've found a little updraft and there, and they're taking advantage
- 27:37of it. If I had to choose, if I was on the Emmy
- 27:41voting, committeds one this one. Yeah, precisely. This one has far
- 27:45more rewatch value than I feel the last one. This one I feel like
- 27:48you can put on. I would watch this happily at Christmas time. Now,
- 27:52this is one I've forgotten Christmas episode for me. Yeah, I think
- 27:55everyone's got their little grab bag of Christmas entertainment. Yes, Christmas go to
- 28:00that you have to watch every year because it just makes you feel all warm
- 28:03and fuzzy inside. Yeah, I would happily put this on the bench.
- 28:07Ye, it felt like that variety of that. I like to watch a
- 28:10Christmas time. It's funny, what what is? What is it for you?
- 28:11For me? And I've watched it every year without fail since I was
- 28:15a kid. I've sw at the VHS tape. It's just that the tape,
- 28:18it's silly and he goes for about thirty five minutes or so, but
- 28:22it's the Hannah Barbara Christmas sing Along video. But it's just evide. It
- 28:26turns on it's Hannah Barbara. It's Hannah and Barbara. What are their names?
- 28:30I can't what their actual names are, like something, Hey, Hannah
- 28:33Barbara, Hannah and Hannah Barbara. That's exactly right, yes, But they're
- 28:37sitting there kind of like Trey Parker and Matt Stone in the in the South
- 28:41Park Introy videos. It's like kids, hey, going but they buy the
- 28:45Christmas tree, like welcome to the Hannah Barbara Christmas Special and it's just it's
- 28:48so wholesome. But you can now find it on YouTube, so I was
- 28:52watching it via YouTube these days, but I'm still at the VHS tape.
- 28:55But that that's my go to every year I have to watch that. Do
- 28:56you have like a go to every year that you have to watch? There
- 29:00were there were a few I actually got, well, not Christmas Christmas,
- 29:06but last Christmas. I did a back to back of your die Hard.
- 29:10But it had been a while since I watched die Hard. I felt it
- 29:12was going to be die Hard. Well yeah, I mean, but I'm
- 29:15well, I think we've almost reached that event a horizon where you know,
- 29:19for a while it was like, oh, die Hard's your favorite Christmas movie?
- 29:22Here, Edgy good one, and now we've sort of gone even beyond
- 29:26that where if you say that, people go, no, it's Christmas.
- 29:32So I watched that and yeah, of course it's die Out. It's for
- 29:34life, it's not just for Christmas. But then I double featured that with
- 29:37The First Lethal Weapon, which is also a Christmas movie. I was like,
- 29:42this is great late eighties, you know, gun play, people smoking
- 29:48indoors. Yeah, so that was great. But a regular that I have
- 29:55is a UK telemovie called Bernard and the Genie. Okay, I think it
- 30:00was written by Richard Curtis, you know, the King of UK rom coms,
- 30:04the Man behind Four Weddings, in a funeral does yeah said he does
- 30:10not in Hill Yeah Yeah, yeah yeah, And it stars Alan Cumming as
- 30:15a young man named Bernard who works as like a a personal assistant to this
- 30:22rich tycoon played by Rowan Atkinson, who's just an absolute prick and a total
- 30:26scrooge of a dude who you know, takes pleasure in. It's very much
- 30:29a Burns and Smithers kind of relationship. And Bernard, you know, he's
- 30:33a bit of a sad sack, but he finds he finds this magic lamp.
- 30:37He gives it a rub and pops his genie. Played by the great
- 30:40stand up comedian and actor Lenny Henry Um. He's been in the in the
- 30:45in the Lamp for something like two thousand years. He used to hang out
- 30:48with Jesus back in the day. And he's a bit of a character and
- 30:51he makes life better for Bernard in ways that are both fun and troublesome.
- 30:57It's it's great and it's it's all someone usually but I believe he can find
- 31:00So it goes for about an hour or so. It's very very funny and
- 31:03it's very very sweet. It's a Christmas special. It is indeed, Wow,
- 31:08No No, it's it's Christmas Eve. Okay, I've never ever heard
- 31:11of that. That sounds and it's like an all star cast. It's really
- 31:15great. Yeah. I think it's early two thousands or late nineties. Okay,
- 31:18yeah, I'm surprised. I've never heard of that. I'm going to
- 31:21be looking it up. You said it's on YouTube, right, I believe
- 31:23si. Let's you keep talking. I'm just going to look on my phone
- 31:26for a sure. Where were we up to do? We even we'll talk
- 31:30about Don Payne. Were just about the start directed by Stephen Dean Moore as
- 31:33well the couch gag. There's no chalk Gate, but the couch gag was
- 31:36out in the Springfield shopper comes up and says, cotch gag thrills the nation.
- 31:40I was surprised I didn't have a Christmas couch gag. I think it
- 31:41just would have made sense. True. Yeah, yeah, But anyway,
- 31:45So the episode kicks off at the church and it's a Christmas service and he
- 31:49says, jeezus two thousand and five years young and love. George's running late.
- 31:53No one knows where he is home. He is jealous of the who
- 31:56are the Episcopalians because compellions a. Yeah, they've got a nice flaky Eucharist,
- 32:01and yeah, mam would really love to dip his hands into their fond
- 32:06some nice saucy gags in this one, some rye ball You love your rye
- 32:09baard gags, don't you? Yes, doesn't everyone indeed, So he calls
- 32:14up Flanders. He calls Flanders on the phone. First you know, Christ
- 32:15is born, who who's on the horn? And then you realized that the
- 32:19trash the train has crashed. He loves his model trains. We ain't see
- 32:22enough of love Joy's train models. I don't reckon because it's like a it's
- 32:24a passion of here is that I've always got a kick out of. You
- 32:28think they could just have it in the background every one, so just you
- 32:30know, just to refresh our memories like this. Dude likes trains. Yeah,
- 32:32and it's funny when people have things like this. It's they it's they
- 32:36get away, so you never bother them when they're doing things like this.
- 32:38But yes, the trains have crashed, so many ruined Christmases or whatever.
- 32:42He says. Yeah, I don't know if it's sorry little sidetracking. Yeah,
- 32:46it's one of the funniest things I've and sweetest things that I've seen.
- 32:51Um, the singer Rod Stewart. Don't make people know who Rod Steward is,
- 32:54but you know if you grew up in my areas, like Rod Steward's
- 32:58that guy who likes to know bone all those models. Yeah, I live
- 33:00the high life and all that kind of stuff. Then you're seeing them.
- 33:02He's like, check out my model train care. He's got this massive one
- 33:07that he's spent like twenty years building. And you're like, he's this globetrotting
- 33:10rock star who's head, you know, more sex than a hundred other people.
- 33:15Combine with glamorous ladies and it's like, love, I'm just going to
- 33:19go down to the Why am I giving him a Cockney accent? He's Scottish.
- 33:23You'd been doing a groundskeeper willing. He's like, I'm going to go
- 33:27down to the down to the cellar and play with my trains at It sounds
- 33:30like a great time to me. Yeah, And people are so passionate about
- 33:35too, because when I was mons on morns of wild Man just to help
- 33:37make ends meet when we first launched out the four figure Descent network, Yeah
- 33:42I am there was a guy who subscribe, Yes, said a guy.
- 33:44I had a train model thing in the background, right in the back garage,
- 33:47and I made the mistake of asking him. He was like, you
- 33:50want to see it? And I was like, oh yeah, sure,
- 33:52I should never have said that, Honestly, guy, I just couldn't get
- 33:54out of me. Hours later, Holy shit, he's gone through all these
- 33:59trains and I'm like, it's cool, but I'm like, I've got shit
- 34:01to do. Bate, but like, it's just this old guy, and
- 34:05you know, he really lived by himself. I'm like, I'm going to
- 34:07humor hi because he's clearly passionate about this. He doesn't get to show it
- 34:09off enough. Go for it, mate, you know, and it made
- 34:13his day. But that's that's very nice of you, man. But he
- 34:17he asked ned to do the service, and depically he's not going to make
- 34:21it. So he feels like he feels like he's born again again. And
- 34:23he gets up papercut, faints the blood and then we get I've got here.
- 34:28Though. The only annoying thing was this was like, it shows the
- 34:30crowd again, Barney, Lenny, Carl whatever, there's a group shot.
- 34:37Now they're the same. He got those three together and then has to chime
- 34:40into something bring up the file. Yeah, I didn't enjoy Homer sayne,
- 34:45does anyone need a hero? What if someone order a hero? He gets
- 34:49up there, takes him. He does a good job. He doesn't fuck
- 34:51it up. He really does, you know. Despite initial disruption from Squeaky
- 34:55Boys team, Yeah, yeah, Homer's got a point. Bring back the
- 35:00Horrible who was basically the Viking version of Homer. He tells the story of
- 35:02the First Christmas. So Homer is, Joseph marches Mary and she's pregnant.
- 35:07So who's the angel that least is playing? Is she just an angel?
- 35:10Or does this angel have a name? I think just an angel. I'm
- 35:14trying to recall who the angel that sort of delivered the good word, all
- 35:17the all the bad news to uh Mary and Joseph was I want to say,
- 35:22Gabriel. Okay, but I could be completely wrong. Mary, it's
- 35:29not all She's full of quiet you Mary. You carry in your womb the
- 35:32son of God who will grow up to become King of the Jews. Not
- 35:37a doctor. Well, he will be able to heal the sick, but
- 35:40nothing to hand the war and the Three Wise Men then arrived with gifts for
- 35:45the for the king, but not this king for the newborn child. And
- 35:50who's burns playing again with his name King Herod. King Herod yes, and
- 35:53he's not impressive with this. He's very upset, and he says kings don't
- 35:57hurt babies, but giant pointy swords will. Oh my, by the way,
- 36:00it's time to ask an answer once again. We all know what gold
- 36:04is, but what is frankinsense and mr Apparently if you combine those two elements
- 36:07together you get a very nice sort of healing ointment. Someone's been on Wikipedia.
- 36:14There you go. Well, thanks for the heads up with Now the
- 36:16Bethlehem in which is run by moh, don't you worry. I got plenty
- 36:24of rooms of my inn oh with brand new carpeting. I want to just
- 36:29broke. You can have the barn and I feel free to come by the
- 36:32main house for breakfast. There won't be any doctor Nick arrive Shalam everybody or
- 36:37the animals say hello Toots Nick back to him. I've got to kick out
- 36:39of the the Caesar gag here as well. Caesar just amended the Cesarean as
- 36:44a sorry, get here in the fuck out of here. Then bart is
- 36:47born, baby Jesus is born, I should say, and he's got the
- 36:51Messiah's nose, not you the other one. And then Homer attempts to drink
- 36:54some wine and bart fucks it up, doesn't he He does in day the
- 37:00seeds of the eternal conflict planted right there. But look props to home.
- 37:06Whereas Joseph, I mean Joseph's you know, he's the embodiment of that T
- 37:08shirt that says I'm not the step dad, I'm the dad that's stepped up.
- 37:12M Yes, he says he's gonna be a great family unit. As
- 37:15she says, you know. First of all, though he starts choking him,
- 37:19so you can't do that. List So you can't do that, because
- 37:20he's going to be wait till he's thirty three, I believe, and he's
- 37:22gonna be crucified for Jesus age. Yes. And then but he's crying or
- 37:28a night, Jesus crying all night, and Joseph says, you know,
- 37:30you can't help. He's watching the Orange Bowl. Then he realizes that that
- 37:34pain a physical comedy makes him laugh. Reminder me, have you ever seen
- 37:37Monsters inc? Of course, yes, there's a scene in Monsters inc where
- 37:40he realizes that making When Mikey does play by Billy Crystal does physical comedy,
- 37:45it makes her laugh, which generates more power obviously, but it reminded me
- 37:47of that moment. It's very very similar. It's like, oh, this
- 37:51is how this is how you laugh? You want you know, physical comedy
- 37:52A and they do the three students routine that you mentioned earlier, and he
- 37:55falls asleep, and this is where they're like, you know what, we're
- 37:58going to be a nice family unit. Now is all going to work?
- 38:00And then King Herod arrives Manger danger major danger and lose a little bit,
- 38:06lose a little bit concerned. Are be sure you want to be like killing
- 38:07a baby? You could look bad for us. I don't know I'll ever
- 38:09speak or right of this again. And they follow the glow, but the
- 38:13glow is unfortunately a duck put the halo on the duck and to stop the
- 38:17army, Joseph cuts a tree and it rolls down and it knocks everyone over.
- 38:22They get stuck to it and because of the flames and there's a duck
- 38:24stern still on top of the halo, it appears like a Christmas tree.
- 38:29Oh it worked for me. I liked it. Yeah, not a Haneker
- 38:31bush, but a Christmas tree. Christmas tree, yes, not a Honeker
- 38:34bush. Some people look at this and think that's pretty corny and obvious,
- 38:37but I liked it. It made sense. But you like Christmas? Yeah?
- 38:40I did like Christmas, Yes, but I did like the way there's
- 38:44all wrapped up with Homer at the lecter and I'm saying, and that baby
- 38:47Jeers grew up to be Jesus. WHOA, Yes, I don't know why.
- 38:55I'm a suck of that line every every time it happens in the census,
- 38:59you know, when they do the um like the old time radio thing,
- 39:01Where was I and that little boy grew up to be Joe McCarthy whoa
- 39:10Yeah, it makes me laugh every time. The second segment, which was
- 39:14I Saw Grandpa cussing Santa, starts off with Barton Lisa watching the Crusty Christmas
- 39:19Special. I'm mashooming and I think it was actually the Energizer Bunny Christmas Special.
- 39:23Trusty was later in the in act three. Yes, watching the Energizer
- 39:28Bunny Christmas Special ats right, and yeah, just ran a Christmas ship and
- 39:31then Grandpa falls out of the Chimney sitting up a trap for Santa, and
- 39:36he's like, well, what are you doing? What? Whyould you wanna
- 39:37do that? And Barton regrets that follow up question because he goes on to
- 39:40tell the story of how he is in World War two with his brother Cyrus,
- 39:44who will never be mentioned again, and how Santa screwed him over.
- 39:47I just, like I said, original story, and it worked to fit
- 39:51the characters. Nothing seemed silly. It was very fun. It was indeed,
- 39:54dandis having a model train flashbags at this moment, like a no,
- 40:00don't ask him yes, don't ask for a story, don't make this old
- 40:02man's day, make him feel lonely. I was a Navy pilot in the
- 40:07Pacific alone with my big brother Cyrus. Cyrus, he never mentioned him before,
- 40:13and I'll never mention him again, but I loved him all the same.
- 40:17Okay, Hey, let's win this walk quick so we can go home
- 40:21and slowly give black folks more rights. And then the chemic cars has arrived.
- 40:24This is very similar to the bus that couldn't slow down. Gay,
- 40:28Hey, it's those planes that crashed into the boat. What are they called
- 40:30it? So Cyrus says, you know he's got his good luck charms,
- 40:35so he'll be fine. He's good luck charm is the pocket watch and it
- 40:37plays which songs to Davis plays American Patrol Blay the Glenn Miller Band. Yes,
- 40:43unfortunately they get shut out of his hand. But good thing he sold
- 40:45too off the dead soldiers. Burns is the lieutenant, so he's in the
- 40:50back of the of the plane with Grandpa, and Grandpas does tell Cyrus and
- 40:52he's got people tailing him and he's trying to look after himself. But Burns
- 40:57is too busy talking to his old He's girl back home, Bernard. I
- 41:00mean, if you're in the war and you finally get ahold of your girlfriend
- 41:01back in America, you're gonna be talking to her, That's true. You
- 41:06are going to be hogging the two way and you get a chance to speak
- 41:07to your bear's gal. Do tell him radio my brother and tell him to
- 41:13watch his tail. Quiet you, I'm talking to my best girl. I
- 41:16miss you too, burning Into you hang up first, No, you hang
- 41:21up first, No, you hang up first, No, you hang up
- 41:27first. Russ, You'll pay for that, you high coop spouting savages.
- 41:46Is there anything more annoying than no, you hang up, No, you
- 41:50hang up. That's like I've never done that. I always hang up show
- 41:54his boss. But the thing is, I remember being yeah, you know
- 42:00it teenage you with the text messages, and I remember it was just like
- 42:02good night and then others and say good night. It's like, is that
- 42:05end of the conversation, whip? I supposed to say something back that's cute,
- 42:07like what do I what do I do? What do I do?
- 42:10This still happens to this day with me. I mean, you know,
- 42:14there will be occasions when I will text the lovely Louise good night and she
- 42:17will text back, and I want to leave it them. I'm going to
- 42:21send one little love hearts on that, which would be saying I thought you
- 42:23were going to sleep, Yes, stop bothering me, it's late, um.
- 42:29And then then you delete your number new phone. Can you please do
- 42:35that one time to Louise. I'd love to see the result. The point
- 42:42Dando brings back Mitch because guys too clinically depressed. It's a podcast new hosts
- 42:47who dis new host is Mitch, but then they unfortunately also get shot down.
- 42:55They end up washed up on an island. Of course, you heard
- 42:59what Grandpa's as he plumdered to I wish I tried refa. Was it correct?
- 43:04Yes? I am. I like Grandpa taking charge here. It's good
- 43:07seeing young Grandpa when he's not just this, you know, feeble old man.
- 43:10He's virile. Yeah yeah, and Birds is trying to take control because
- 43:14this, this and this fit the band's character. What lalah gagan and built
- 43:16up fire. I don't have to listen to you and this island. Military
- 43:21rank means nothing. We're in a state of nature where the strong of will
- 43:23control the week. How dear you drown the king of New Burns Island.
- 43:32How do you like to be the archduke jurge of Coconuts? So he says,
- 43:43the Grandpa's taking charge, He's running the show here. Day's turned to
- 43:45weeks, turned to months, turned back to days, back to this,
- 43:47Yes, and then envisions Grandpa. I envisions bits of birds as a woman
- 43:52eyes up here, soldier, that's um. That's by the way, World
- 43:55War two era movie star and a blonde bombs Betty Grabel said she was OK.
- 44:01Yeah, well that's she's meant to be. Sort of an iconic image
- 44:05of Betty Grabel, who's renowned for her legs more than anything else. True,
- 44:13there's a sort of an iconic image of her in a bathing suit and
- 44:15she's gone her back to the back to the camera, but sort of looking
- 44:19back over a shot. I shouldn't have done that while I'm recorded. She's
- 44:22got looking back over her shoulder. Yeah, quite coquettishly. And I think
- 44:27that helped these a lot of lonely nights for a lot of lonely guys during
- 44:30w W I I I think the Simpsons have taken off that image quite a
- 44:35bit. I think so. Yeah, you can tell the generation of of
- 44:40early Simpsons writers. At least, I think there were probably a few a
- 44:44few boomers in the writer's room. So their hopes of being rescued have faded.
- 44:47Now it's Christmas Eve and they're just setting up the little They've got a
- 44:51nice set up, now, haven't they. That's sort of the sort of
- 44:53work they've conceded. Oh this might be it for us, So let's just
- 44:57let's just make this work. And Burns gives him a he's offering, and
- 45:00it's shaving cream, but which is made out of seagull brains and snail goo.
- 45:04But at least this is mate given him something, you know, may
- 45:07do it what they can. And then they hear something to hear something over
- 45:09in the sky. What is it, mister Burns, I don't care,
- 45:12it's Christmas. I want to shoot something, and he shoots it down.
- 45:14They realized that Santa slay. This was I really like this. So he
- 45:16yells out for the reindeer. Oh he's German. That's good eating. Well,
- 45:22if you heard someone say Donner and blitz and you've been like, oh,
- 45:24okay, yeah, that's definitely Germans, exactly, Yeah, it makes
- 45:27sense. And this is where they promised to get the slave back up and
- 45:30running for him or my name is not young grandpass shipson, and we get
- 45:34the montages and fixing it up. Did you see the name of the sleigh,
- 45:37the new name? They called it naughty or naughty or nice? Yes,
- 45:39And then the reindeer is unfortunately, Rudolph has been eaten by a snake
- 45:44and Pranter is missing as well, assumed also eaten by a snake. So
- 45:46it Burns. Santa's about to leave and Burns backstabs him. I'm like,
- 45:51ah, classy, Burns, He'll turn How did I see this coming?
- 45:54I didn't see it coming. I was like, Oh, of course,
- 45:57of course this is what's going to happen. The face turn would be more
- 46:00sort of yeah, it's like what the hill turns, just natural. Burns
- 46:05just waiting it out until he's right to the right moment, and bam,
- 46:07the old cooking out in the head. He flies off with the sleigh and
- 46:13Grandpa's human even let him spoon me, and then he jumps on the all
- 46:16the reindeer tries to resascitate Santa first, but then he jumps on top of
- 46:20him and flies. I like this action sequence. I've Grandpa riding the raindegain.
- 46:23Yeah. So this apparently the action sequences in this episode were difficult to
- 46:28animate, so the animated the background as one one first, and then they
- 46:31did the foreground second. So Grandpa and the reindeer and mister Burns was animated
- 46:36by itself and then put over the top of the background animated separately because it
- 46:39was too hard. There's too many moving things in the background to go to
- 46:43animated altogether, particularly the scene with the planes, because somebody planes flying in
- 46:46the background. So they animated all the background planes and then animated the foreground
- 46:50and blended them together. I think we can all agree that they came together
- 46:53quite nicely. They did, indeed, yes, But so he shoots the
- 46:58reindeer, but it doesn't have as much impact because it's not bleeding anything.
- 47:01It's it's treating it like at the plants. It's like it's like it doesn't
- 47:06really sort of go. You don't go, oh, poor reindeer, because
- 47:09Grandpa eventually jumps off the reindeer, lands on burns and beats the shit out
- 47:13of him with a tricycle. I want to say, tricycle with a trisycle.
- 47:15Yes, And this is where they've the rescued, the rescue Santa now,
- 47:20and Santa says that you know, I'll take you. Um, I'll
- 47:22take you. I'll go finish my ship, I'll go do my job,
- 47:24and then I'll come back to take you home. And if it gets to
- 47:29do so, he never does, does does? I waited and waited,
- 47:34but Santa never came back. If I hadn't invented a jet scheme, made
- 47:37a coconut, I'd have never gotten home. And then when I did,
- 47:40the war was over and the nurses were all kissed out. That's quite a
- 47:45tale, Grandpa, What did you little? It's true? I cheld you.
- 47:51It's Santa. I got an old scart a settle God God, and
- 47:57I missed him again. My brother's lucky watch sounds I must have laughed at.
- 48:08I wish I miss you every day. A very sweet moment, wasn't
- 48:14it? That was nice? Yeah? And was sorry. It was a
- 48:16Don Paine who said that Jean dum Paine wrote the episode of Largogene. Yeah.
- 48:22Yeah, and I think el Jean had a point. I mean,
- 48:24that would have been a really traditional Christmas Christmas e way to end it.
- 48:30Yeah, I'm torn. I'm fifty I'm maybe sixty percent. Yeah, leave
- 48:34it there. But the the other forty percent is like, no, no,
- 48:37it's not too bad the way it ends. Although I looked up poko,
- 48:40poko, miku, nnet oh boy a mines some listen now, No,
- 48:45no, it actually doesn't come up. You know, um it sounds
- 48:50like looky, it sounds it sounds ribald. Yeah. Miku apparently is like
- 48:55a Japanese word for beautiful. Okay, so something else as well. Hold
- 49:01one second, I might be able to find out. But it does when
- 49:06you combine the two. It doesn't necessarily mean anything sexy or romantic. It's
- 49:10just an exotic couple of words that sounded more exotic together they do. Indeed,
- 49:15Yes, So basically, Grandpa I saw Santa tells Grandpa that Cyrus never
- 49:19died, he crashed the head, he never left, and he says,
- 49:22you'll take Grandpa there, And then when they get there, Santa's excuse,
- 49:25Oh, I kept putting it off, and then I just got too embarrassed.
- 49:28We've all been there, right, Oh God, yeah, you're putting
- 49:31something off, putting it off. Then You're just like, now, I'm
- 49:34just gonna pretend that that person doesn't exist anymore because I'm too embarrassed to acknowledge
- 49:37that I've let this go too long. We've all, we've all, we've
- 49:38all been there. And then Cyrus says he's been busy with his fifteen Native
- 49:43wives. It sounds like a lot of sex. I said, why it's
- 49:45not girlfriends? And then the no pokmical for Cyrus. It definitely sounds like
- 49:50sex. I won't. I thought it was funny, it really does.
- 49:52The final segment is the Nutcracker Sweet and It's Nutcracker Special. End of view
- 49:58play at school, perhaps the worst ever since Superintendent charm is a good review.
- 50:04No leaving after your kid's part has done as well, so it says
- 50:06on the front and I think it's over, but it's just intermission. But
- 50:09everyone just leaves anyway, and Lego continues to taunt the children. Then I'm
- 50:13assuming time has a lapse because it cuts to the family then walking down the
- 50:15street, and Lisa was on stage at that point. But Oblahoma says he
- 50:19never wants to hear the nutcrack of music again, and Lisa says, well,
- 50:21you're gonna have to because it's in public domain, which means everyone's gonna
- 50:23use it. I didn't know that until watch this episode. I didn't realize
- 50:25it was probably done. They are the same here. I've started on a
- 50:29bate my Christmas pie. I've got to get that a lousy tie. Christmas
- 50:35crowds wild hide time left you blue, Christiny to move your ash let me
- 50:39Christmas Eve? Wise, the sand does suit so snug? Why should they
- 50:46kid? It's soul bog have jucked my place, says up so hie.
- 50:51But let's not junk this upsot Christmas Eve. Here these holiday cookies swell my
- 51:12catch. Yeah, cat, even though we're not gentile, will get together
- 51:19for a while. The Christmas Eve is here. Christmas is a family.
- 51:28I don't grumba we'd be awake Christmas. E fine, spend Christmas Eve with
- 51:37the raccoons. It got me a gift, D said, Lord, I
- 51:47shouldn't have. I love that. I love the Jewish tradition of eating Johnny's
- 51:52food on Christmas, which uh, you know, apparently happened because it started
- 51:57in New York. App the Jwish community. In the Chinese community, they
- 52:00sort of their neighborhoods were closed by that's nice. And the Chinese was one
- 52:05of the few communities that wasn't really anti Semitic, and they sort of said,
- 52:09yeah, come on in and have a bite to way, We're happy
- 52:12to We're happy to feed you. And that's and it became a tradition that
- 52:15was just ongoing. Maybe we should all just have Chinese Christmas time. But
- 52:20that is a night that is very I didn't know that. That's a very
- 52:22nice story. But then they spending sending Grandpa out to spend Christmas Eve raccoons.
- 52:27I just loved their little ugly sweaters. Then we get the Krusty Special
- 52:30and he plays his most requested clip from the nineteen sixty four It's the snowballs
- 52:34in the balls and John Glenn and Martin Luther King of they're laughing at him.
- 52:37Then we get Mo's annual tradition attempting suicide to dance of the flutes,
- 52:42and yeah, very funny. Montage just slept through the traffic, just his
- 52:45face of just like fuck and the gum with the Christmas flag that very Christmas
- 52:49on the other side. Then you think, then you think he's he's putting
- 52:52his head in the oven, but he's actually serving Barney a nice Christmas roast
- 52:54and says he look at ham. Yeah, nice looking. He says,
- 52:58can you kill me? He's like, oh what is wall? Oh?
- 53:00Maybe next year? And that was I was just very sweet. It is
- 53:04nice. Then we get I think the best part of the whole thing.
- 53:06Where as we discussed earlier Homer and Marge. This was very It was just
- 53:08nice to see Homer and Marge not squabbling, loving each other happy. I
- 53:15was like, you can do this, please, can we get more of
- 53:19this? So Homer has forgotten his present for Marge. So and this is
- 53:22to the tune of I would Trey pack Trapak and he goes to the quickie
- 53:28mart and all that's left is turkey made of trout. So then he returns
- 53:32and he's all somber and he's sad and embarrassed, and Marge is waiting for
- 53:36him and they're just the music and then look on her face and it's like
- 53:38she knows that he's forgotten, but she's like, don't worry, I've got
- 53:42this, and she gives the gift to him, and it's a gift for
- 53:45her. And it's the photo of them, of hom address as Sancho and
- 53:47her on his lap, and they're all just having a great time. And
- 53:50like you said, it does break a tear to your right, doesn't it.
- 53:52It really does. They just looked so happy together, and both in
- 53:55the photo and in real life. And yeah, as I said before,
- 54:00it's good of a part of who knows you as well as you know yourself,
- 54:04if not better. Yeah, it's nice to see Horror and March having
- 54:07fun together without the kids around as well. Correct. Yeah, snuggling in
- 54:10front of the fire on Christmas Eve. Ye, lovely, It is lovely.
- 54:14And it ends with most sliding by a little callback to his little moment
- 54:16before with to all and to all, a good night on the banner and
- 54:20here an eighteen Wheeler eighteen wheels No Miss Me and that was that. Yeah.
- 54:24I just I was so surprised with how much I enjoyed this. It
- 54:28was just this was a great Christmas special from the Simpsons. Well done,
- 54:30Don Payin, Well done Don Payne and everyone involved. Merry Christmas everyone.
- 54:36Yeah, I mean no, just I was going by the title, which
- 54:39is as generic as it gets. Yeah, I was like, I was
- 54:42like, oh my god, they could even think of an interesting name.
- 54:44It's going to be shit. Yeah, I think they're going to be putting
- 54:46in twenty five percent effort to this one. You know, this is a
- 54:50not quite mid season that. You know, it's like we might we're a
- 54:53bit time, we're running on a bit of m d Let's just and no
- 54:58brought the a game a they did. Indeed, they're definitely one of the
- 55:00better ones we're reviewed in a long time. You bet. What do we
- 55:04learn? Bomber? So what did you learn from the episode? Mister Davis?
- 55:07Don't have fifteen wives? Settle for maybe like ten girlfriends might get some
- 55:12Poko Miku. I learned that they can give us good Homer and March stories,
- 55:16so give us more of them. That's it. Forward, Your name
- 55:22trill be all right, it's time for the Guy Davis New Name Championship.
- 55:25The current leaderboard stands at this in first position, Luke McKay on nine points,
- 55:30Heath Apple beyond seven points in second position, and in third position,
- 55:34we have a two way tie. Can you do you say two way tie
- 55:37or just a tie? It's three way tie when two people yeah, yeah,
- 55:43and the three way dies when three people yes. And Norah Coker and
- 55:46Fergus Jess both of five points in third position. All right, So what
- 55:50have we got this week? Mister Davis? Right, a lot of good
- 55:52entries this time around, but I've decided to just go one, two three
- 55:57with the points and the first point. The single point goes too. It's
- 56:04the wonderful time of the year. That works very well. We've definitely bought
- 56:08that. That would have been more interesting title for this episode. That sipsons
- 56:12Christmas stories. Great. That's Richard Gayfer for one point. First time Richards
- 56:16received points on the leader board. But I'm Richard, long time listener,
- 56:20first time point getter. Nice one. Yes, it's a long time listener.
- 56:23Maybe he's not two points four and you know, I like my dolls.
- 56:30It's the dope trinity. Oh not bad. That is Matthew Polido also
- 56:35first time on the leaderboard. Two points by I'm Matthew. Oh my gosh.
- 56:38We're making all manner of new buddies at Christmas time. That's great,
- 56:43but three points the gold goes to a Christmas trilogy. Oh Christmas trilogy that
- 56:52is. Oh it's our man Steve Roberts, who whenever we do our patron
- 56:54monthly zoom calls, he's calling us from work in a factory. He's always
- 57:00around heavy machine. Whey. We're like Steve lose a finger. But Steve
- 57:06Roberts has the first time he's appeared on the leader board. So three movies
- 57:08this week. Well done everybody, So the leader board hasn't changed as well.
- 57:12It makes my job. It's a Christmas miracle, all right. So
- 57:14that means the leaderboard still is Luke McKay in first position, Heather would be
- 57:16in second, and Norah Coker and Fergus Jeffs with a two way tie in
- 57:21third position. Debail is here. Okay, dokey, mister Davis. We
- 57:29have some male bad questions that have come through for us, like a Santa
- 57:34sack full of the messengers you might say a sack full of male bad questions.
- 57:38Indeed, this one here comes from Harrison McClure. Harrison says, do
- 57:42you guys have any personal Christmas Eve slash Day Boxing Day traditions? We've already
- 57:45discussed that. I think we've liked the specials that we like to watch.
- 57:47And I always watch Christmas Carol on Christmas Day's, usually in the morning when
- 57:52because my parents come over and my uncle's come over to watch to open the
- 57:55presents and stuff. When they go, I just to Christmas Carol on in
- 57:59the background, and it's just it's just I to have it on, not
- 58:01necessarily watching it. It's just it's just seeing it that it's there makes it
- 58:05feel like hostess to me. Yeah, I know exactly what you mean.
- 58:07Certainly on a Christmas morning, I will, well, I put on something
- 58:10like maybe Scrooged or It's a Wonderful Life if I haven't seen it on Christmas
- 58:15Eve, and I'll have that in the background while I am preparing what I'm
- 58:20going to bring to the Davis Family Christmas smorgest board. Yeah, and we
- 58:23passed a salad back in the day before you could pick and choose, you
- 58:25know, I used to really enjoy when they'd always have like the Christmas marathons,
- 58:29and it was like all the very sitcoms having their Christmas specials back to
- 58:31back to back to back. It was just nice. But my Boxing Day
- 58:37tradition for a while there. Um dooty great sandwich out of out of Christmas
- 58:45leftovers, you know, mostly salad, but a lot big whack at turkey
- 58:49in there. Um. Sorry, I hope the cops aren't listening. Smoke
- 58:54a little bit of reef and watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy so you
- 58:58can get down of a plane now, won't matter. That's good. I
- 59:02wish I tried my reever hero. This one's from Andrew JP. What's your
- 59:09favorite Christmas movie? We've discussed this. He's a diehardened Batman Returns, so
- 59:15he's amount of taste. Yes, Pat Wright, would you rather Alliott this
- 59:19one for me? I guess would you rather Alliott ruined Santa Claus for all
- 59:22the kids in kinder or have him ruined it for Holly kids? And kind
- 59:24don't give a shit about those kids to quote Michael Jordan, those kids.
- 59:29But the thing is, did he actually say that? I don't think he
- 59:31did, but it became his mame. You can just teacher Michael Jordan.
- 59:37I'm like, it's feasible, it really, And I love how no one
- 59:45really sort of begrudges him, the fact that he's like a prick because he's
- 59:51Michael Jordan, because he's so good and he backs everything up. He's just
- 59:53like, I am better than you, and if you think you better,
- 59:55I'm gonna make you realize you're fucking not. But that he was like,
- 1:00:00okay, okay, that that doco on Jordan on Netflix is one of the
- 1:00:04best docos I can I've ever seen in my life. It's so good.
- 1:00:07It's incredible, isn't it. It's actually what's so great about that is that
- 1:00:09the last Dance that was just called the Last dast Dance, Yeah, is
- 1:00:14that it's all this like HD footage of like peak NBA era that no one
- 1:00:17had ever seen before. It was like amazing. It'd be like seeing this
- 1:00:22full HD like doco of like Star Wars being made behind the sceneshit that you've
- 1:00:25never seen before. What's what's a doco you'd love to see behind the scenes
- 1:00:30of a movie of all this HD footage that you've never seen before. If
- 1:00:32you could choose like one one era or what one film series or TV series
- 1:00:37where it's just you know, three hours of footage or well that was would
- 1:00:40be like nine hours of footage, wouldn't it. I'm just like maybe.
- 1:00:44I mean, they made this this ten hour dramatized version of the making of
- 1:00:49The Godfather called The Offer okay um, which I watched a little bit of
- 1:00:52him was like part of this is a good part of this, Most of
- 1:00:54this is not, but the way that all came together, all the drama
- 1:00:59that's involved with it. I mean, I'd love to see an actual,
- 1:01:01really good, in depth documentary which sure probably exists or probably as being made
- 1:01:07or been made. But you know, all the people that were looking forward
- 1:01:10to play all these various iconomic people and bringing the cast they did get together,
- 1:01:15I don't I think that'd be fantastic. I'd love to see behind the
- 1:01:17scenes making of that, all right, Whether you have a guys. That
- 1:01:20is our review of Simpson's Christmas Stories, Like I said earlier, and absolutely
- 1:01:23pleasant surprise, just an absolute joy to review. To be completely on ess
- 1:01:27no, I would be Christmas fan, but I just had a great time.
- 1:01:29This is just a whole bunch of fun to review, wasn't it,
- 1:01:30mister Davis, It certainly has. This was a fun episode. It was
- 1:01:34nice to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year a few months early,
- 1:01:38eight months early. Let's be honest. I'm never going to pass up an
- 1:01:40opportunity to celebrate Christmas time. But I don't forget guys. Continue to rate
