- 0:27Speaker 1: Home Services. Now there's many Andrew Larsen's out there. I
- 0:29Speaker 1: think we've talked about this in the past, but the
- 0:31Speaker 1: only one at Larstome Services. There is a Greg Larson
- 0:34Speaker 1: at Larstome Services.
- 0:35Speaker 2: There's one.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a couple, but the only Andrew Larson there.
- 0:40Speaker 1: How you been my friend?
- 0:41Speaker 2: Good? You know. I know you can't see because we're
- 0:43Speaker 2: on the radio. You can't see me. But when that
- 0:45Speaker 2: music came on, I was instantly like in the zone
- 0:50Speaker 2: air drumming. Yeah, I mean it was it was like
- 0:54Speaker 2: second nature, the reminders of the drums. But if you
- 0:58Speaker 2: saw me, you'd think I did.
- 1:02Speaker 1: For folks that wonder, Hey, what does Andrew look like?
- 1:04Speaker 1: What's Andrew all? About By the way, we mentioned your
- 1:07Speaker 1: large home services dot com the website, but you guys
- 1:09Speaker 1: have a Facebook page and YouTube channel. I don't know
- 1:11Speaker 1: that we talk about it enough. You do a lot
- 1:13Speaker 1: of really really cool and I know it's a very
- 1:15Speaker 1: popular video series that you and others at largetome Services
- 1:21Speaker 1: put out there. But folks can definitely follow you on
- 1:23Speaker 1: Facebook and social media and check out those YouTube videos
- 1:26Speaker 1: as well, because what they say, you're proficient. It's also
- 1:29Speaker 1: very entertaining watching you guys talk about talk about not
- 1:33Speaker 1: just the important stuff, but the fun stuff as well,
- 1:36Speaker 1: which some may argue is more important. Let's talk about
- 1:40Speaker 1: speaking of important stuff and things that people need to
- 1:43Speaker 1: be thinking about this time of year in Wisconsin. We
- 1:46Speaker 1: are into April now, which means severe weather storms and
- 1:50Speaker 1: we get a little bit of everything. I see snow tonight,
- 1:52Speaker 1: rain today. You never know what's gonna bring us. There's
- 1:56Speaker 1: some certain thing, there's certain things that folks need to
- 1:58Speaker 1: be aware of when it comes to storm damage and
- 2:00Speaker 1: really how to handle those storms, isn't there Andrew there is?
- 2:04Speaker 2: And and talking about our podcast. We actually just shot
- 2:08Speaker 2: one this week and we talked about storms and storm
- 2:13Speaker 2: damage and storm restoration work because April may like it
- 2:19Speaker 2: becomes it becomes a hot topic and some of the
- 2:23Speaker 2: we had a few early season hailstorms last year, they
- 2:26Speaker 2: weren't like it wasn't like widespread effective. But I mean
- 2:29Speaker 2: we had a number of customers and homeowners that we helped.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And here's the part that really, can I say sucked?
- 2:37Speaker 2: Can I say that?
- 2:37Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 2:38Speaker 2: I think you could say that. Yeah. Yeah. The part
- 2:40Speaker 2: just sucked about it that that that I is that
- 2:44Speaker 2: the insurance landscape is changing. And I know I've talked
- 2:47Speaker 2: about this before. Now it doesn't negate the fact that
- 2:51Speaker 2: we're probably gonna have some hailstorms and there's gonna be
- 2:53Speaker 2: some damage. But in the Midwest, specifically Innesota and Wisconsin,
- 3:01Speaker 2: and I say specifically because it is legitimately where weather
- 3:05Speaker 2: patterns have really changed and we've been seeing more hail
- 3:09Speaker 2: than typical. And if people don't know, you know, your insurance,
- 3:14Speaker 2: your homeowner's insurance is based on statistical probability. And we've
- 3:17Speaker 2: got really smart people called actuaries. Trust me, I'd never
- 3:22Speaker 2: heard of one of these until my best friends became one.
- 3:25Speaker 2: And they figure out the statistical probabilities that you're going
- 3:29Speaker 2: to get injured that you're going to have a storm
- 3:33Speaker 2: event on your home. They work for a lot of
- 3:35Speaker 2: insurance companies, and in the past, the statistical probability that
- 3:39Speaker 2: we were going to get a hailstorm in Wisconsin just
- 3:41Speaker 2: it wasn't that common. They stayed more south. You had
- 3:45Speaker 2: a hail belt that went across Nebraska and Iowa and
- 3:49Speaker 2: into Illinois, and of course Texas and Colorado, like they
- 3:53Speaker 2: got hit every single year. Well now we've been starting
- 3:56Speaker 2: to get hit every single year. So what's happening is
- 4:00Speaker 2: we've had a whole lot of people that they might
- 4:02Speaker 2: not think so, but I can tell you from knowing
- 4:05Speaker 2: people all over the country that our homeowner's insurance here
- 4:08Speaker 2: is dirt cheap, dirt cheap. I mean, there's a lot
- 4:13Speaker 2: of people that have paid nine hundred to twelve hundred
- 4:16Speaker 2: dollars a month for a full homeowner's insurance policy and
- 4:20Speaker 2: if anything happened to their home, they had a five
- 4:22Speaker 2: hundred or one thousand dollars deductible. Those days are done,
- 4:29Speaker 2: especially when it comes to your roof. For instance, my
- 4:34Speaker 2: father just got a letter, mister Greg Larson, a letter
- 4:37Speaker 2: from his insurance company, and it was it was as
- 4:41Speaker 2: black and white as you can get. You can listen
- 4:44Speaker 2: to my podcast. It's going to explain depreciation on your
- 4:47Speaker 2: roof and recoverable depreciation and a little bit more depth.
- 4:50Speaker 2: But basically, in order to get a full roof paid for,
- 4:53Speaker 2: you have to have recoverable depreciation on your policy. And
- 4:57Speaker 2: they just made no qualms about it. It's gone. There
- 4:59Speaker 2: is no more such thing. And on top of no
- 5:02Speaker 2: more recoverable depreciation, your rates are going to go up
- 5:05Speaker 2: by twenty five percent. So I did the math. Not
- 5:11Speaker 2: only that, last year they raised his deductible and it
- 5:13Speaker 2: went from one thousand dollars to one and a half
- 5:16Speaker 2: percent of his home's value. So let's just say hypothetically
- 5:20Speaker 2: his home is worth three hundred thousand, which is somewhere
- 5:22Speaker 2: between there three and three fifty. But we take three
- 5:24Speaker 2: hundred thousand. His deductible's four hundred or forty five hundred dollars.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Now we take his roof. It's roughly seventeen years old.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Your insurance company's gonna deem the full life of a
- 5:36Speaker 2: roof twenty years. So he's got three years left on
- 5:40Speaker 2: his roof, so they're going to appreciate it down to
- 5:42Speaker 2: probably I don't know a couple grand. Now, put on
- 5:49Speaker 2: top of that his deductible. If he was to get hail,
- 5:51Speaker 2: and hale was to wreck his roof, he would get nothing. Nothing.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And now here's the problem. Now he knows because he
- 6:01Speaker 2: opens all his mail and he saves the paperwork, two
- 6:04Speaker 2: things that I don't do either of. I feel like,
- 6:08Speaker 2: there's a bill in here, now throw it away. And
- 6:10Speaker 2: I think that's what a lot of homeowners did. In
- 6:12Speaker 2: the part that stunk last year with some of those
- 6:14Speaker 2: hailstorms is that we had homeowners that got bad damage
- 6:17Speaker 2: and they weren't reading. They didn't All your insurance company
- 6:20Speaker 2: has to do is send you a letter and say, hey,
- 6:24Speaker 2: your policy changed. Read this. But a lot of people
- 6:28Speaker 2: don't read it. They throw it away, and then they
- 6:31Speaker 2: get Then they have a storm event or some sort
- 6:34Speaker 2: of loss, and now they're going what I had. It
- 6:37Speaker 2: happen to multiple people where the insurance was only going
- 6:40Speaker 2: to give them half enough money to cover their roof,
- 6:43Speaker 2: and now now they're paying out of pocket. Now would
- 6:48Speaker 2: that change anything if they knew? Not really, but at
- 6:51Speaker 2: least they would know and they'd be prepared instead of shocked,
- 6:54Speaker 2: because the last time they looked, they had one thousand
- 6:57Speaker 2: dollars deductible and all would be good because they had
- 7:00Speaker 2: coverable depreciation. But the same thing that's happening to my
- 7:02Speaker 2: father happened to these people. They took away the recoverable depreciation,
- 7:06Speaker 2: which is what you need to get the entire roof
- 7:08Speaker 2: paid for, and they increase their deductible and they had
- 7:11Speaker 2: no idea, so they were shocked. Now, the point of
- 7:14Speaker 2: all this is just to know, make sure you're educated
- 7:17Speaker 2: and you know where your policy is at. Reach out
- 7:20Speaker 2: to your insurance agent, or reach out to your insurance
- 7:22Speaker 2: company and see if there is going to be any
- 7:25Speaker 2: changes or if there's already been changes. Then don't look
- 7:29Speaker 2: at a storm, say your roof gets damaged and they
- 7:33Speaker 2: say because the insurance company come out and say, yp
- 7:35Speaker 2: this needs to be replaced. Here you're getting almost nothing
- 7:38Speaker 2: to pay for it. Because I'm seeing it more and
- 7:40Speaker 2: more and more. Use a storm as not an opportunity
- 7:45Speaker 2: to get a free roof because those days are running out.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Look at us and look at it as an opportunity
- 7:51Speaker 2: in most cases to get a real nice down payment
- 7:55Speaker 2: on a roof that will last longer and withstand hail.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And that's always been our stance as we sell more
- 8:02Speaker 2: shingles that are Class four impact rated that when a
- 8:06Speaker 2: storm comes through, they've got a rubberized membrane and the
- 8:09Speaker 2: hail can bounce off them and not break the matting,
- 8:13Speaker 2: eventually leading to leaks. So that's what I want people
- 8:16Speaker 2: to look more at a storm for is an opportunity
- 8:19Speaker 2: as an upgrade and not something for free.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Do we see people making it's kind of shifting there.
- 8:25Speaker 1: They're thinking as well. Obviously, as you mentioned, if you've
- 8:27Speaker 1: got the damage lesson learned and you've dealt with an
- 8:30Speaker 1: insurance company recently, you go, oh my goodness, yeah, we
- 8:33Speaker 1: need to we need to be looking at at more
- 8:35Speaker 1: durable shingles better. Are we seeing that? Also on the
- 8:38Speaker 1: new shingle side for folks having roof replacements, are they
- 8:41Speaker 1: are they becoming educated and wise the fact that guess
- 8:45Speaker 1: what the the you may want to shift from the
- 8:47Speaker 1: old days used to be like, yeah, we'll throw a
- 8:49Speaker 1: shingle up there, that's good enough, and if there's any damage, hey,
- 8:52Speaker 1: what the heck? We just get on the insurance. Therefore,
- 8:54Speaker 1: if not to replaces as that that's shifted. Are we
- 8:57Speaker 1: seeing more people saying, you know what Andrew. When we're
- 9:00Speaker 1: going to do whether it's whether it's a repair after damage,
- 9:03Speaker 1: or we're just going to do an overall replacement because
- 9:06Speaker 1: it's needed, we are going to start looking at these
- 9:08Speaker 1: the better shingles, things that withstand and stand up to
- 9:12Speaker 1: hail an other type of damage, just much better.
- 9:15Speaker 2: From a homeowner standpoint, Is that what you're asking? Yes? Yes,
- 9:18Speaker 2: so from a homeowner standpoint, they are so grateful when
- 9:22Speaker 2: we talk about options, because most roofing companies don't talk
- 9:27Speaker 2: about options. Here's our shingle, here's our price, will beat
- 9:32Speaker 2: Larson like, I mean, that's literally what we I'm not
- 9:35Speaker 2: trying to toot my own horn, but that's what we run into.
- 9:37Speaker 2: We can do it cheaper, well, of course you can.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I could do it cheaper too, but we choose to
- 9:42Speaker 2: give homeowners options and show them other shingles, other types
- 9:46Speaker 2: of processes that other people just don't do. I can't
- 9:50Speaker 2: tell you how many times our guys will go, our
- 9:52Speaker 2: guys or gals go into a home and show them
- 9:55Speaker 2: shingles that that are better, and they go, well, we've
- 9:59Speaker 2: had three estimates already, and nobody talked about any sort
- 10:01Speaker 2: of impact rated shingle. Well, that's because a lot of
- 10:05Speaker 2: roofers don't want to put them on. Because here's the thing.
- 10:08Speaker 2: We have a throwaway shingle culture. Put a roof up,
- 10:13Speaker 2: it's good for fifteen years, tear it off throat and landfill,
- 10:15Speaker 2: put a new one on, and a lot of contractors
- 10:18Speaker 2: look at it like if I put a good shingle
- 10:20Speaker 2: up there and they get a hailstorm, well I'm not
- 10:22Speaker 2: going to be able to replace that again. And that's
- 10:25Speaker 2: not our philosophy. I mean, don't like, don't take this
- 10:29Speaker 2: to heart if any of our customers are listening, but like,
- 10:32Speaker 2: our goal is to put a roof on and never
- 10:34Speaker 2: hear from you again in a good way. I don't
- 10:37Speaker 2: want to hear that your roof is leaking. I don't
- 10:39Speaker 2: want to hear that your roof is damaged from hail.
- 10:41Speaker 2: I love it when my reps go back to a
- 10:45Speaker 2: home and knock on a door to see how everything
- 10:47Speaker 2: is and whether they've got our roof or our gut.
- 10:49Speaker 2: The best is when they have our gutters. Hey, how
- 10:51Speaker 2: is that gutter shutter working out for you? Uh? Well,
- 10:54Speaker 2: I actually forgot that I even had gutters. Fantastic say
- 10:59Speaker 2: no less, Yeah, since you put them up. I don't
- 11:01Speaker 2: think about him anymore. That's a beautiful thing. And when
- 11:04Speaker 2: people say, hey, I got my new roof on, I
- 11:06Speaker 2: don't have to worry about my Every time a storm
- 11:09Speaker 2: was coming along, I was afraid shingles were going to
- 11:11Speaker 2: blow off, and I was afraid I was going to
- 11:12Speaker 2: get another leak. And I don't have to worry about
- 11:14Speaker 2: that anymore. And I sleep, I sleep while at night.
- 11:17Speaker 2: We want to put it on and never hear from
- 11:19Speaker 2: you again, unless we're reaching out to send you something special.
- 11:23Speaker 2: We want it to last forever. Now, if you do
- 11:26Speaker 2: have an issue, you call us, we take care of it.
- 11:28Speaker 2: But we try to put something up that's going to
- 11:31Speaker 2: last forever, whether it's an impact rated shingle from GAF
- 11:34Speaker 2: or it's f wave, which is what I have on
- 11:36Speaker 2: my home. We've done roughly one hundred of them, one
- 11:39Speaker 2: hundred homes in the past few years. Not a lot.
- 11:42Speaker 2: It's expensive, but I mean it is a It is
- 11:45Speaker 2: a It is like a rubberized shingle that I don't
- 11:49Speaker 2: know what can go wrong. You can blow it, you
- 11:51Speaker 2: can hit it with a blowtorch, you can hit it
- 11:54Speaker 2: with a hammer. You can't hurt it. You can't hurt it.
- 11:58Speaker 2: So again showing people options of roofs that will last longer,
- 12:03Speaker 2: because when a storm comes along, I'm telling you it stinks.
- 12:06Speaker 2: You're gonna have seventy five different people knocking on your
- 12:08Speaker 2: door asking if you can give you a roof inspection.
- 12:12Speaker 2: And the one thing I said in the podcast was
- 12:14Speaker 2: don't freak out because unless you had a six inch
- 12:19Speaker 2: piece of softball size hail go through your roof and
- 12:23Speaker 2: land in your living room, your roof is not gonna
- 12:28Speaker 2: leak tomorrow or next week, or next month, or probably
- 12:32Speaker 2: in the or probably in six months. Because of a hailstorm.
- 12:36Speaker 2: It takes time. What it does is it speeds up
- 12:38Speaker 2: the aging process because it breaks the fiberglass matting, you
- 12:42Speaker 2: lose your granules. Eventually it will leak. That's why it
- 12:44Speaker 2: has to be replaced. But don't freak out. Take your time,
- 12:47Speaker 2: and whether it be be Larsen or some other local
- 12:51Speaker 2: reputable company, I just say wait because you don't want
- 12:56Speaker 2: to put a roof on and then five years down
- 12:58Speaker 2: the road have an issue and have absolutely nobody to call.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Because when a restoration company comes into town, they're there
- 13:03Speaker 2: for twelve to eighteen months and then they're gone, and
- 13:06Speaker 2: then they're moved on to the next city. You will
- 13:08Speaker 2: not be able to get a hold of them. So
- 13:10Speaker 2: take your time, don't freak out. Know what's on your
- 13:13Speaker 2: insurance policy, and look at different shingle options.
- 13:18Speaker 1: You Have you ever read the book or seen the
- 13:20Speaker 1: movie Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I have not.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I you should, and beside the movie is absolutely fantastic.
- 13:27Speaker 2: The book is I'm writing it down.
- 13:30Speaker 1: The first page of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
- 13:34Speaker 1: All it says is don't panic.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yeah, don't panic. I mean if you get a tornado
- 13:41Speaker 2: and your roof blows off, he panics. Yeah, yeah somewhere. Yeah,
- 13:44Speaker 2: but a little bit of hail, you're going to have
- 13:47Speaker 2: people knocking on your door and they're going to be
- 13:50Speaker 2: I'm not joking. I've seen this. It happened in Lacrosse
- 13:52Speaker 2: a couple of years ago. We had a storm hit
- 13:55Speaker 2: on a Friday. We had some of our people go
- 13:57Speaker 2: up there on Saturday just to go back to our
- 13:59Speaker 2: past cause corson just kind of get the feel. Okay,
- 14:02Speaker 2: there were storm chasers everywhere. They were replacing roofs on Monday.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Oh that's not necessary, you don't have don't panic, well panic,
- 14:18Speaker 2: don't panic because there's a lot of local companies that
- 14:20Speaker 2: can still help you with your insurance work and get
- 14:22Speaker 2: you a great and get you a great price, and
- 14:24Speaker 2: get you a great roof and give you other options.
- 14:28Speaker 2: So if storm hits again, your home is going to
- 14:30Speaker 2: be better protected.
- 14:31Speaker 1: It's and as we talk with Andrew Larsen and of
- 14:33Speaker 1: Largstome Services, it's out there and unfortunately we're going to
- 14:36Speaker 1: go through the season, we'll hear horror stories and I
- 14:38Speaker 1: know Andrew, folks will call you and say, I don't
- 14:40Speaker 1: know what happened, but here's what happened. And you don't
- 14:43Speaker 1: want to make that mistake. As Andrew points out, when
- 14:46Speaker 1: it comes to damage, you know, roof damage and other things,
- 14:48Speaker 1: if you tail damage that stuff again, it can be
- 14:51Speaker 1: dealt with, it can be taking care of. As a
- 14:52Speaker 1: matter of fact, Andrew and the team at Large Home Services,
- 14:55Speaker 1: they do phenomenal work. It's not a high pressure thing.
- 14:57Speaker 1: It's hey, here's here's the education, here's what we can offer.
- 15:00Speaker 1: You take your time and you make up your mind
- 15:02Speaker 1: and make that right decision. That's as a matter of fact,
- 15:04Speaker 1: we've talked about this years ago we had Andrew put
- 15:06Speaker 1: a roof on our house. You wouldn't be able to
- 15:08Speaker 1: tell that it was years ago. It still looks brand new.
