- 0:47Speaker 1: Welcome to today's edition of Reflection on the Word with
- 0:50Speaker 1: Richard K. I'm Chuck Christie, and today we are asking
- 0:53Speaker 1: you to spend a few moments of your time with
- 0:55Speaker 1: us each day as Richard shares from God's work with notes, quotes,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and stories along with some of his own personal experiences,
- 1:02Speaker 1: to confirm for you God's great love for us, that
- 1:05Speaker 1: his compassion for us never fails, and that he has
- 1:07Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. In Lamentations,
- 1:11Speaker 1: Chapter three, verses twenty two and twenty three, we read,
- 1:16Speaker 1: because of the Lord's great love, we are not consumed,
- 1:19Speaker 1: for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Great is your faithfulness. Now, if you miss a portion
- 1:26Speaker 1: of today's broadcast or would like to recommend it to
- 1:29Speaker 1: a friend, you can hear this program anytime online at
- 1:32Speaker 1: Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:40Speaker 2: On the last and most important day of the festival.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Jesus stood up and cried out, if anyone is thirsty,
- 1:49Speaker 2: he should come to me and drink. The one who
- 1:52Speaker 2: believes in me, as the scripture has said, will have
- 1:55Speaker 2: streams of living water flow from deep within him. He
- 2:00Speaker 2: said this about the Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus
- 2:05Speaker 2: were going to receive the Spirit, for the Spirit had
- 2:09Speaker 2: not yet been received, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
- 2:16Speaker 2: John chapter seven and verses thirty seven through thirty nine.
- 2:23Speaker 2: As we have studied the nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit,
- 2:29Speaker 2: we have come to a place where we defined the
- 2:33Speaker 2: gifts and we also explained how they are used in
- 2:39Speaker 2: the Body of Christ. Today, there is something that we
- 2:44Speaker 2: need to come to clarity as far as our understanding
- 2:51Speaker 2: of the working of the Holy Spirit in the Body
- 2:54Speaker 2: of Christ. You know, I have read many books about
- 3:01Speaker 2: the experience of the Holy Spirit, but the Bible is
- 3:07Speaker 2: constantly making us aware and conscience of the fullness of
- 3:16Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit. Now we use different terms to define
- 3:22Speaker 2: the application of the Spirit and the manifestations of the Spirit.
- 3:28Speaker 2: We use a means of being able to describe the
- 3:32Speaker 2: gifts of the Spirit because they are given throughout the
- 3:37Speaker 2: Body of Christ by the Holy Spirit to profit for all.
- 3:44Speaker 2: In other words, these gifts are for the benefit of
- 3:49Speaker 2: the Body. Now, many times people will say all of
- 3:54Speaker 2: the gifts don't seem to be functioning in our particular
- 3:58Speaker 2: body of believers, and Unfortunately this may be the case,
- 4:05Speaker 2: but it is not the will of the Holy Spirit
- 4:10Speaker 2: that this is the case. You see, people have a
- 4:15Speaker 2: tendency to try to change the things of the Spirit,
- 4:21Speaker 2: and in some ways the changes have been more to
- 4:26Speaker 2: make it comfortable for man, but it has nothing to
- 4:31Speaker 2: do with whether or not the Holy Spirit is functioning.
- 4:36Speaker 2: In his book Experiencing the Holy Spirit, Andrew Murray wrote
- 4:44Speaker 2: a very defined testament in regards to the working of
- 4:51Speaker 2: the Spirit, and what he says is, in all our
- 4:54Speaker 2: studies of the work of the Blessed Spirit, our pursuit
- 5:01Speaker 2: of a life in His fullness, we will always find
- 5:05Speaker 2: the sum of Christ's teaching in those wonderful words. He
- 5:12Speaker 2: that believeth on me, as the Scripture has said, out
- 5:17Speaker 2: of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. I
- 5:23Speaker 2: read the verse in the Holman Christian Standard Bible, where
- 5:29Speaker 2: it sounds somewhat different, but yet it means the exact
- 5:34Speaker 2: same thing, a deep flowing of the living water within
- 5:41Speaker 2: the believer. And as we are convicted of the deficiency
- 5:48Speaker 2: and the defectiveness of our faith in Christ, as we
- 5:53Speaker 2: come to understand that believing in Him needs a yielding
- 5:59Speaker 2: of the whole heart, life, and will. We can confidently
- 6:03Speaker 2: count on receiving the Holy Spirit's power and present. When
- 6:11Speaker 2: Christ becomes all that God has made him to be
- 6:14Speaker 2: for us, the Holy Spirit can then flow from Christ
- 6:20Speaker 2: to do his blessed work of leading us back to
- 6:24Speaker 2: know Him better and to believe in Him more completely.
- 6:31Speaker 2: There is a purpose for the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
- 6:38Speaker 2: You see, in many cases we have been taught that
- 6:44Speaker 2: this particular baptism only took place on the day of Pentecost. Now,
- 6:51Speaker 2: if that is scripturally true, then we would have to
- 6:57Speaker 2: begin to ask these questions. When did the Holy Spirit
- 7:04Speaker 2: first manifest his presence among believers? Well, startling as it
- 7:12Speaker 2: may seem, the reason that this particular scripture about rivers
- 7:18Speaker 2: flowing from within the living water is because Jesus said,
- 7:25Speaker 2: this is about the Holy Spirit, whom you are going
- 7:31Speaker 2: to receive, but you have not received, because I am
- 7:36Speaker 2: not yet glorified. Now, when Jesus made this statement, he
- 7:43Speaker 2: was saying it in the midst of a public assembly
- 7:48Speaker 2: in a temple meeting. I want to read to you
- 7:52Speaker 2: the scripture that outlines what was taking place. The first
- 7:58Speaker 2: part is referred to as the identity of the Messiah
- 8:04Speaker 2: and reading from John's Gospel again chapter seven, but beginning
- 8:11Speaker 2: with verse twenty five. Some of the people of Jerusalem
- 8:16Speaker 2: were saying, isn't this the man they want to kill? Yet, look,
- 8:22Speaker 2: he's speaking publicly and they're saying nothing to him. Can
- 8:27Speaker 2: it be true that the authorities know he is the Messiah?
- 8:32Speaker 2: But we know where this man is from. When the
- 8:36Speaker 2: Messiah comes, nobody will know where he is from. As
- 8:41Speaker 2: he was teaching in the Temple complex, Jesus cried out,
- 8:47Speaker 2: you know me, and you know where I'm from. Yet
- 8:51Speaker 2: I have not come on my own. But the one
- 8:55Speaker 2: who sent me is true. You don't know him. I
- 8:59Speaker 2: know him because I am from him and he sent me.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Then they tried to seize him, yet no one laid
- 9:08Speaker 2: a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. However,
- 9:15Speaker 2: many from the crowd believed in him and said, when
- 9:19Speaker 2: the Messiah comes, he won't perform more signs than this
- 9:23Speaker 2: man has done, will he. The Pharisees heard the crowd
- 9:29Speaker 2: muttering these things about him, so the chief priest and
- 9:33Speaker 2: the Pharisees sent temple police to arrest him. Then Jesus said,
- 9:39Speaker 2: I am only with you for a short time. Then
- 9:42Speaker 2: I'm going to the one who sent me. You will
- 9:45Speaker 2: look for me, but you will not find me, and
- 9:50Speaker 2: where I am you cannot come. Then the Jews said
- 9:56Speaker 2: to one another, where does he intend to go so
- 10:00Speaker 2: we won't find him? He doesn't intend to go to
- 10:03Speaker 2: the dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? Does he?
- 10:08Speaker 2: What is this remark he made? You will look for
- 10:11Speaker 2: me and you will not find me, And where I
- 10:16Speaker 2: am you cannot come. And on the last and most
- 10:21Speaker 2: important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out,
- 10:28Speaker 2: if anyone is thirsty, he should come to me and drink.
- 10:33Speaker 2: The one who believes in me, as the scripture has said,
- 10:37Speaker 2: will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.
- 10:44Speaker 2: As we had read earlier, this was a purpose that
- 10:50Speaker 2: Jesus was proclaiming when he was announcing that he is
- 10:56Speaker 2: going to leave now. They did not necessarily know the
- 11:02Speaker 2: manner in which his departure would take place. They also
- 11:06Speaker 2: did not know what he meant when he said that
- 11:09Speaker 2: he was returning to the one who sent him. But
- 11:14Speaker 2: Jesus told them they would look for him and they
- 11:18Speaker 2: would not find him. But then he also said this
- 11:24Speaker 2: to those who believed, he said, out of your inner
- 11:30Speaker 2: being will flow streams of living water. Now, because he
- 11:38Speaker 2: had made this statement, we have to begin to see
- 11:42Speaker 2: that this was before he was glorified. But if we
- 11:46Speaker 2: look further into John's gospel, we will be able to
- 11:51Speaker 2: see that Jesus actually began to fulfill that particular promise
- 11:58Speaker 2: to his believers when he appeared to them after the resurrection.
- 12:06Speaker 2: What was it that he said? When he first entered
- 12:10Speaker 2: their presence, He showed them his hands and his side.
- 12:17Speaker 2: So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. But
- 12:22Speaker 2: here he also said, peace to you. As the Father
- 12:28Speaker 2: has sent me, I also send you. Now listen to
- 12:34Speaker 2: this following scripture. After saying this, he breathed on them
- 12:41Speaker 2: and said, receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the
- 12:49Speaker 2: sins of any they are forgiven them. If you retain
- 12:55Speaker 2: the sins of any, they are I want you to
- 13:01Speaker 2: notice that in that particular scripture Jesus said, breathing on them,
- 13:11Speaker 2: receive the Holy Spirit. You'll find that in John the
- 13:16Speaker 2: twentieth chapter, beginning with verse twenty and proceeding to verse
- 13:25Speaker 2: twenty three. Why is it important for us to see
- 13:31Speaker 2: this scripture? Because Jesus breathed on his disciples, his followers
- 13:38Speaker 2: and said, receive the Holy Spirit. He breathed on them
- 13:44Speaker 2: and gave them the Holy Spirit. So if they had
- 13:49Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit, why then would he have said to them,
- 13:54Speaker 2: wait until you are endued with power from on high?
- 14:01Speaker 2: Why would he have done that? Because Jesus was going
- 14:07Speaker 2: to equip his believers to do his work in the
- 14:14Speaker 2: receiving of the Holy Spirit. They were sealed for their redemption,
- 14:21Speaker 2: but empowering came to them after they had received the
- 14:29Speaker 2: Holy Spirit. It's very important for us to recognize there
- 14:34Speaker 2: is a significant time frame that Jesus utilizes for us
- 14:41Speaker 2: to begin to understand the working of the Holy Spirit.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment to wrap up.
- 14:49Speaker 1: But if you just joined us you've been listening to

- 15:22Speaker 1: K include Great is Thy Faithfulness by Our Daily Bread
- 15:26Speaker 1: and printed by Discovery House Publishers. Again, here is Richard
- 15:30Speaker 1: to wrap up today's message.
- 15:34Speaker 2: You see, the Holy Spirit seals us unto the day
- 15:40Speaker 2: of redemption. He is the earnest, if you will, of
- 15:46Speaker 2: our inheritance, as the scriptures states. But more importantly, not
- 15:53Speaker 2: just that we are sealed, but that we are empowered
- 15:58Speaker 2: to do the work of ministry. The thing that is
- 16:03Speaker 2: missing so much in the church today is the empowerment
- 16:11Speaker 2: of the Holy Spirit. Very little today is taught about
- 16:17Speaker 2: the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. The reason it's important
- 16:23Speaker 2: for us to recognize the power of the Holy Spirit
- 16:28Speaker 2: is so that the works of God can be completed
- 16:32Speaker 2: and God will receive glory as many come to be
- 16:39Speaker 2: His disciples. Out of your belly will flow rivers of
- 16:48Speaker 2: living water. If anyone is thirsty, he should come to
- 16:54Speaker 2: me and drink the one who believes in me. As
- 16:59Speaker 2: the scripture has said, we'll have streams of living water
- 17:04Speaker 2: flow from deep within John chapter seven and versus thirty
- 17:12Speaker 2: seven and thirty eight, and that is today's Reflection on
- 17:20Speaker 2: the Word.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Thank you Richard. Join us again tomorrow when we continue
