- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Welcome to Storiescaling by podcastvideos.com, where creators share the truth behind the content, the grind, and the growth.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: Got a bunch of copies made and sent them out, and I got one response from Sherman, Texas, and it was a CBS affiliate, and uh ended up getting a couple of interviews there and getting the job, and away we go.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: You remember how many you sent out?
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: 40.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: 40.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Might have been 41, 42, but I remember 40 was the threshold.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: And yeah, just one.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: It's all it takes.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: That's all it takes, baby.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: It just takes one.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: So, so radio, um, sports, and now you're in the podcasting.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: What?
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: Talk to me about that transition.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Does it does it feel like a world of difference?
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Is it a situation where you come in with some familiarity because you were in those different mediums, or is it all the above.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: All the above.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Technology is a little different.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Things have changed a little bit.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Software's changed a little bit.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Continues to change a little bit.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: I'll say.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: A lot bit.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: But one of the things I did, you know, when I was back in college, I was uh a TA for radio production.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: So I would teach, you know, how to cut the actual tape on a wood block with a razor blade, you know, and how to assemble it.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: The most primitive form ever.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: All the way up to what at the time was uh, you know, the earl the earlier digital software uh for radio.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: So stepping into that or where I am currently, sure.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: You have a base.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Um, and then you know, once you get into TV, you obviously edit video.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: At the time for me, it was tape to tape.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you're familiar with tape to tape.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: SIMR.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: But you got two tapes, in point, outpoint, you edit, and one kind of records over the other where it needs to.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Again, pretty primitive, and that was for the majority of of the time I was in TV.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: But at the very end, um, was the early days of uh Adobe.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: And we use that.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Uh so I had a little bit of an idea before I got into uh podcasting.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Well, the first year of podcasting was audio only.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Five or so months ago I entered uh the video realm and and uh so Adobe Premiere had the gist of it, but I had to brush up on a lot.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: When was the first year of podcasting period for you?
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: For me?
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: You know, uh I decided to finally do it over uh Christmas break of 2023.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: So I launched February of 24.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Still relatively new.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's been weekly since.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So sure.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Weekly since.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Tell me.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: So tell me, t take me back to that point of inception.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Like when you had the idea and you were like, man, I got I gotta run with this.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: Was it a was it a lightning bolt moment?
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: Or was it just like how they portraying the movies?
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: Like, talk to me about that.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: You know, you know those cartoons when when we're kids and they're hanging the carrot over the horse to make it walk.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: I feel like that carrot had been hanging over me for a couple of years because I've been wanting to do something like this.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: And I have a former co-worker previous to uh coming to do TV News here, I did it in El Paso, Texas.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Right on.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: And uh guy I worked with there went on to Savannah, Georgia, and and uh he ended up starting a food TV show.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: And now it's blown up into something bigger.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: He's done books, oh wow, he's got a podcast, he's done all sorts of things.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: It's called uh He Didn't Like It with Jesse Blanco.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: It's it's great.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: Anyway, see what he was doing there and how we're growing here, it's just been something that I've been like, I really need to do that.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: It's something I should really look at doing.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: I really, and towards the end, I was I was I was really to the point where I'm like, I'm gonna do it.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: I've just gotta do it.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: And what made it real over the over uh Christmas break 2023?
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: I thought, let me get a logo made.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: And then once I see the logo, I think that'll be the that'll be real.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: That'll be the time where it's time to shift into gear.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: And I and I got the logo made and I looked at it and I thought, oh, here we go.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Here it is.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: It's official now.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: It's official.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: That's what it took.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Loved it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: I loved it.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: So now when you have an idea for an episode, is it a guest in mind?
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: Is it do you have your list of like, man, I gotta, I gotta get these people.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: How does that happen when it when you think of it's pretty fluid.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: There's some that I've been talking with for six, seven months.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: It's matching schedules.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: There's some that reach out to me.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's some that I reach out to.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Uh it's pretty fluid.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: I I try to keep uh a couple, two, three interviews in the can.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Um, and I'm not doing well at that right now.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, but it's always harder over the holidays and and whatnot, like 4th of July.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: And so I mean I'm uh building back up, but um, you know, um ideally that's that's the play for me.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: When people come on, is it a automatic, comfortable conversation just flows?
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Do you have to make them comfortable?
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: And if so, then how do you go about making it show?
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: It's a great question.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: You know, because I had to learn along the way.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Because now I had some I had some really, really I was really fortunate because my first couple, two, three, four interviews were people that made me comfortable.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: And that made the whole difference.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: The absolute difference.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, then there comes a time where it's not, and it can be a little bit of a struggle when you're thinking to yourself, okay, I can't let this be a struggle.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: So what I found was I'm sitting down with my guests beforehand before we turn anything on.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Well, now I turn the cameras on so they don't shut off and I don't have to reset them.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: But uh before we turn everything on, uh, I sit with them and I go through questions, kind of like what what you were earlier.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: You know, I'll sit with them and I'll be like, you know, if there's anything you want me to add, we'll add it.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: If there's anything you're not comfortable with, we'll take it off.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: And that really kind of alleviates because I, you know, they don't know if I'm coming in being like an investigative reporter type or something like that.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Or hey, I heard you're starting a new place over here.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Uh is there any truth to that?
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Or just, you know.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Uh so I I think once we get into that and and talk through that, the chemistry starts to build, the comfortability starts to build, and it's I think that's really worked out really well.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: What's the biggest thing you've learned about yourself through this podcast?
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: Like I said, it's still relatively early on in your journey.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, 70 episodes is no small feat, but I think it's stretch of the imagination.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: You sure mean um but over time it's new.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: But over time, you know what I mean.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: So yeah, like what's that what's that thing, or or maybe a couple of things that you look and you're like, oh man, I I didn't know this about myself, or this is something new for me.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: I know I drink too much coffee.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Especially when I'm up till 2 a.m.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: trying to make the 3 a.m.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: window I have for uploading, which uh, you know.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: But anyway.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: No, um, you know, I I think there's some technical things for me personally that I continue to try to work on, but when I get so locked in on an interview, it all goes out the window.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: You know, as far as interview style and and tactics go.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Tactics aren't the right word, kind of technical for sure.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Um so uh there's a lot of that that I'd like to work on and uh get better with.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Uh but I I think that um it really kind of shocked me uh out of the gate.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: The editing, the flow, and the format of the way I'm doing it has has, I mean, outside of adding video, of course.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Has really kind it kind of took form early.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: And I thought, this is something I just we'll just take a shot with this video.
