- The Mediaocean Podcast Network: Welcome to FrapRap. Aaron Goldman here, aka A G, AKA G Dog, AKA, all the AKAs. So we do not have a show for you this week. There was a last-minute cancellation from our guest, who I will not name, but they are on this org chart that we've been referencing here for StarCom IP back in the day. If you want to play detective. ⁓ you can go to ⁓ the Frap Rap website, ⁓ comb through the rows and see if you can find ⁓ the culprit. ⁓ what I thought I'd actually do ⁓ today is ⁓ share a little bit about some of the observations I've had from doing now this will be episode ten, which is hard to believe. ⁓ and then stay tuned to the end. We've got a supercut ⁓ mash up. Of ⁓ each of the raps that I've done in the first nine episodes. The freestyles from the end of the show. Our producer Rob McKevley's come up with ⁓ an awesome little roll-up, highlights, lowlights, everything in between. ⁓ so stay tuned for that. But I did mention the website. Actually, I'm gonna start there. So this might be a ⁓ time where if you are listening audio only, ⁓ flip over to video, if that's on Spotify or if it's on YouTube, ⁓ videos there and actually Apple I just heard Apple Podcast is now ⁓ coming out with video. So I don't know that we'll get in time for this episode, but we're trying to wire that up. So you'll be able to actually watch on all those platforms. But you can of course ⁓ listen as well, sort of describe what's happening here. So I'm at Fraprap.com ⁓ and you can see yes we've got all the ⁓ episodes with links to the shows ⁓ looking back at these great guests ⁓ and I'll come back and kind of share a quick ⁓ thought of of some of the things that stood out from each of those episodes. But it's been so awesome catching up with everybody. And of course then as we scroll down further, ⁓ we've got my little bio, my my rap sheet ⁓ if you will. Here's that org chart I mentioned. ⁓ so this is ⁓ a copy of the one. So this was actually hanging on my bulletin board. ⁓ at L90 Max Online back in the day. I took it with me on my last day, stuck it in a box, and then twenty some years later, resurfaced it and and now it's my ⁓ hit list for everyone I'm trying to get on the show. So ⁓ if you are on this list and we haven't talked yet, please get in touch. Would love to book you in. I think we're scheduled through October, ⁓ which is pretty crazy. I hope to keep it going all the way into 27. ⁓ of course, for the big finish, ⁓ we want to get Rashad on here for the season finale. ⁓ but it's been great catching up with folks. And then, of course, I've got all the things we've mentioned on the various shows now. So this was Sunil when we recorded in Cannes, and he was talking about how he dressed up as me for Halloween one year. Here's the ⁓ photo proof. ⁓ no AI here in any of these ⁓ photos. ⁓ here's ⁓ when Gary Coleman came to visit us ⁓ at L90. This was 2001. He was making the rounds with UGO ⁓ doing sales calls. ⁓ this came up in the Aaron Petty ⁓ episode. ⁓ we talked about that. ⁓ here's Courtney Lee dressed as Corella Deville from another one of those epic ⁓ Halloween parties. ⁓ we broke some new ground on the pot I did with her as we ⁓ did a live scroll through of ⁓ Go Google Photos, ⁓ looking back at some pics from back in the day. ⁓ and this is just from the last episode. So here's Jen Schreiber in front of her bench. We talked about this. She actually said and she sent me afterwards the AI video that was made of her dancing on the bench. We decided not to post that. The goal of the show is not to get anybody in trouble ⁓ or cause too much ⁓ controversy. ⁓ and of course I'm sticking with a theme that no AI. This is handcrafted artisanal frap-rap, ⁓ just like it was served back in the day ⁓ at Cozy. We also ran a fun ⁓ Jingle contest ⁓ with Jen. Somehow ⁓ the 8777 Cars for Kids jingle came up. I asked Jen if she had a jingle yet for her business. And so we tried to come up with a one on the spot. We threw it out to the audience. Shout out to Pran of Pandit, ⁓ loyal listener who came up ⁓ with a good one. I think he's he he he came up with eight seven seven seven. Eight seven seven. There's only two sevens. Eight seven seven B O S S Jen. Boss Jen. And then we can set that to a jingle. I guess if we use the cars tune, it'd be something like 877 BOSS Gen. 877 BOSS Gen. Buy a home from her today. Not bad. We'll see if ⁓ we can make that any better in post-production. ⁓ and ⁓ just going back up ⁓ to the top here and and looking at each of these episodes. Let me actually see if I can zoom a little here. we can make these folks a little bigger. So so one of the ⁓ amazing things about reliving this time ⁓ in the industry when we were still just sort of figuring out what online advertising was and how to operate ⁓ an agency and of course I was on the ⁓ sell side so so working through from an ad network perspective how we could bring ideas to life ⁓ and it's come up in a lot of these episodes. We're basically making it up ⁓ as we go. ⁓ started off with Jeff Marshall in episode one and he was talking about ⁓ basically how Starcom was sort of ⁓ a land of misfit toys you had to be ⁓ a certain type of person ⁓ to be part of IP ⁓ in those formative years. I think Lana Misfit Toys was a quote He attributed to Rashad, he might have said like probably ninety percent of everything is ⁓ attributable ⁓ to Rashad, and that's ⁓ certainly been ⁓ a theme that that's carried through how how Rashad sort of stood alone in in ⁓ the way that he was able to assemble this group and and rally folks around client causes. ⁓ episode two was incredible with ⁓ Vogel, some of the things that I I remembered and and and called out You know, she talked about how Rashad gave permission to break things. ⁓ she talked about how you know the the ⁓ mantra was that you got promoted when the people under you were promotable. ⁓ some really interesting ⁓ lens on on kind of talent development, ⁓ career growth, and of course, you know, Erin's ⁓ the model of that. Every five years she's taken on another bigger, broader job within the group, ⁓ and she's still there ⁓ today. So it was awesome catching up with her. And of course, she brought the full ⁓ box of props ⁓ to the freestyle, ⁓ which you'll see some of which in the supercut ⁓ that we play at the end of this show. Episode three was G Hammy. ⁓ of course the episode names are always the AOL instant messenger handle from each of the guests. ⁓ Sitchy Hammy ⁓ talked about how you know ⁓ working at Starcom IP back in those days felt like playing free. It was like sort of a sports metaphor where you know you're playing free whether it's a friendly game or maybe you're up, you know, four zero in the match or down four zero for that point, and you can just sort of play free ⁓ and and ⁓ go out there and and just do it. ⁓ so people trust relationships. continued to be a recurring theme. ⁓ then we got Shelby, ⁓ which was awesome. Ca sat down with her in Cannes. That was episode four. And she talked about how you know, you just can't be afraid of change. You gotta give people sort of the leeway to figure things out. And and if something works, accelerate it. If it doesn't work, then pivot it. ⁓ she said, you know, you you just have to be able to say, ⁓ that's interesting, ⁓ when everyone else is is kind of afraid of that ⁓ thing. And that's kinda always distinguished her ⁓ and her career to now where, you she's ⁓ CEO of StarCom USA, so another ⁓ incredible story ⁓ there. ⁓ episode five, ⁓ was still in Cannes, that was with Sunil. ⁓ that was a lot of fun. ⁓ his thing was, you know, don't be early. Right. You don't want to be too early. Sineal someone who throughout his career has kind of been on the bleeding edge and sometimes has been too early. So he's learned what what exactly that looks like. But when you kind of ⁓ build a career on on innovation and and continue to bet on yourself, ⁓ you have to try and find that right balance of when's the right time, when do you have product market fit? ⁓ and then you can put gas on the fire. ⁓ he talked about how, you know, IP was a bunch of real genuine pioneers. ⁓ the you know kind of first time ever things that that came out of IP was was just ⁓ ridiculous. He talked about the culture too. ⁓ you know, he he ⁓ he he said how you know he it was brought to him as like this is how we've done it. What do you think about you know improving it or or trying something new and and he's carried that through. ⁓ then we talked a little bit about ⁓ AI at the end, ⁓ an interesting POV from Sunil on how it's gonna unlock more jobs in the long run. ⁓ so then over to Aaron Petty for episode six. And she talked about just you know being a lifelong learner and that kind of willingness to start over. When she joined ⁓ IP, ⁓ she came in at a relatively lower level, I think it was a soup level. She had been an AD ⁓ on GM for StarCom, but she knew she wanted to get in that group. ⁓ I think the the line was something like, ⁓ who are these good looking, crazy smart people? How can I join them? ⁓ so that was a lot of fun with with EP. ⁓ Courtney, Lee Cortini, K Summer Lee. ⁓ talked about how you know she got her job at IP basically on the backs of ⁓ being someone who had used email and had once sold something on eBay and that was enough to prove her ⁓ digital bona fides back then ⁓ and get a job at at IP and and build from there. ⁓ governale was up next episode eight. ⁓ he talked a lot about ⁓ how kind of the the role of leaders was sort of creating space, ⁓ limiting politics, kind of shielding the team from that and and just sort of building stuff. ⁓ so great perspective there. We we talked all the way through his career now to where he's he's doing ⁓ very similar and and awesome things at at at PNG. And then episode nine was Schreiber. And this was a really interesting one because we went from ⁓ a career in advertising and digital media to a career in real estate and what some of the kind of similarities and differences were. She talked about how that sort of network that was formed carries with you for life, how you know people at IP ⁓ have been ⁓ our current ⁓ Clients of hers in real estate, how her two social groups now between her real estate friends and her advertising friends are ⁓ are now mixed. ⁓ and importantly, this concept of you know, you're you're not stuck with what you're given. You can always take control, ⁓ make a move, and ⁓ and that entrepreneurial spirit I think is something that was ⁓ has been consistent across each of the folks we've talked to, and is certainly something that ⁓ characterized SARCOM IP back then. and the folks who are ⁓ in the space or out of the space ⁓ now are kind of acting with those same ethos and and yeah so it's just been incredible watching people do these amazing things, catching up with folks. ⁓ in some cases, I I've talked to you know I haven't talked to some of these folks in in decades, ⁓ but we're catching up for a frap wrap. I'm looking forward to many more. ⁓ to everyone who's been on the show, thank you. To those who want to get on the show, ⁓ get in touch. To those who've been listening or watching, ⁓ thank you as well. ⁓ please do give us a a rating, a like, a subscribe. ⁓ let's juice those algos. There's nothing I like more than seeing someone in real life ⁓ comes up to me and tells me that they've been listening or watching the Frap Rap, they've been enjoying it. ⁓ so ⁓ we'll keep doing it. We're gonna keep going all the way till we get everybody and then close it out with Rashad. So ⁓ we will be back next week with a brand new, fresh, handcrafted. Wrap of the Frap. And in the meantime, I hope you enjoy. We got about a three minute supercut here of some of the clips ⁓ from the freestyle round. So as as folks who've been listening know, we do the frap wrap at the end of every episode. It comes after the apartment crawl, which is our speed round. And ⁓ basically the guest just gives me ⁓ some keywords, some props, ⁓ whatever it is to work with, and I just go off the top of the dome and where I stop, don't nobody know. ⁓ In this case, we're gonna bring you nine of the ⁓ best ⁓ parts and and one of ⁓ the ones where it all fell apart and I think I had to resort to scatting because I couldn't come up with a rhyme. But that's the beauty of ⁓ operating without a net. And without further ado, I'm going to cue that up. ⁓ producer Rob, kick that beat. Boy! Bye! Check it, check it. Check it, check it. This is gonna be the clip. ⁓ we're gonna do numbers on the socials here. Okay, ⁓ here we go. Little higher there, Jeff. Yep, boom, here we go. I do. I have my box of props. Bad handwriting and it's backwards. I'm gonna start with my beatbox. AG in the place to be. We're in canon. Everybody is going insane in the brain. When we think about IP, we're going back to the old days. I don't know why, and I can't even blame it, but I just don't know. It was a name and I gave it. We're gonna take it down, we're gonna eat a little too. We got a dessert for me. I'm not a fool. They didn't sell this at Cozy back in the day. But we could go down to the bakery and look my way and take it from me. All AG G Dong with AGs. When I would get to Cozy, I would get the squiggle, I would get up in line and I would. I would take that little strip and it was mighty fine. It's a little golf ball. And what's up all y'all and all of y'all? I get my Texas drawl my little bit of slang and you know I ain't lame and you know I ain't the same. You ain't heard it before. Give me a little more. You gotta slow it down, slow the beat. The rap gets slow. It's stomp your feet. You might wanna say it's one point three, no no, point seven five. You know I'm still alive. Let's bring it back up. Let's start to raise our cup. Put your hands up in the air, wave ⁓ around, I'm like you just don't care. We'll go back to the jewel ask ⁓ yo, what you got for me? Another word? Yes, please. 14 floor! Fourteenth floor, we gotta go a little more. We gotta give it up because you know we bang on the door. We knock down with Leo and his apple when he says turn the lights out. We don't mean the babble, but we bab get the back four when we scat scat scat. We sneak out the door. You know what you think, girls pretty in pink. EP Aaron Petty, palms are sweaty. Mom spaghetti, we going down cause we ready. It's AG here with Marshall 2, and we're taking it back to the old school. What's next got you got for me? Throw it up in the air. Everybody put your hands, flip your hair. ⁓ my god, it's the pets.com sock puppet. You know, I don't do it up. It's like a Muppet. I put my hand inside and I let it ride. It says what I think, and I don't mind what I drink. It looks like a cup, a little higher, please. I can't see what that thing is. ⁓ my, I'm on my knees. It's the L90 mug. L90 in the place to be. Back in the day of pop-ups and unders, everybody knows there were a few blunders. We heard some stories, we heard some tales. You put the banner ad up and you get your white whale. I rule the world. I free all my sons. I love them, love them, baby. A little nasty naz to close it out. Anything else you got for me? Because I'm all about out of the rhyme. I mean, I did have no, but that was amazing. We'll stop there. Yay! You're listening to the Media Ocean Podcast Network. For more of our shows, visit www.mediaocean.com/slash podcasts.
