Latest / AWAKEN with Dylan Ayaloo: Inner Work, Healing, Yoga & Meditation / [EP27] Avoid your New Years resolutions fizzling out by mid Jan
Transcript
- 0:00Around this time of the year, New Year's, people are setting New Year's intentions, wanting to manifest the year ahead. Today's the 10th of January, so people are getting into kind of their habit-building exercises, and people have started going to the gym, maybe signed up for the local yoga class, maybe some of you are the teachers, right?
- 0:23So classes are busy, everything is full and busy right now.
- 0:26And when it comes to fitness, yoga, this is the time of the year when everything is full and busy.
- 0:34And for whatever it is that you are building or wanting to work on,
- 0:39so let's say if it's your physical health and your fitness,
- 0:42so maybe you're starting to get into or get back into your fitness routine or your yoga routine,
- 0:50or maybe you are starting anew.
- 0:53Sometimes around this time of the year, we tend to go a little bit gung-ho.
- 0:58What that means is we just go all out, right, and like just give it everything
- 1:03and squeeze out every drop of energy or motivation, if you want to call it that,
- 1:10at this time of the year.
- 1:11And that's okay.
- 1:13It's not a bad thing, but it doesn't serve you long-term if you tend to fizzle out.
- 1:20Most New Year's resolutions and intentions tend to fizzle out by around, I don't know, five days from now, like middle of January, two to three weeks in.
- 1:32People lose steam, so to speak, right?
- 1:35Lose energy.
- 1:37And it's busy, right?
- 1:39The holiday seasons have just finished.
- 1:41Probably spent quite a bit of money on shopping for Christmas.
- 1:45And then there was like New Year's celebrations.
- 1:47this time around there's a lot of people who had the virus again but a different version of it this
- 1:53time around so maybe you're just recovering from that and trying to get into some routine
- 1:59so my message is just take it easy as in pace yourself because when you're wanting to create
- 2:07a habit with anything you want to be able to build that habit in so it's long lasting
- 2:14because as I've said many times,
- 2:17the formula to success that I've found in any area is consistency.
- 2:23Consistency meaning discipline.
- 2:26So it's a time of the year you could say that we are building
- 2:30or wanting to build discipline,
- 2:32but discipline tends to fizzle out very quickly.
- 2:36Whatever motivation behind the discipline tends to fizzle out quickly
- 2:40if we don't give ourselves some room to build it into a habit.
- 2:46That's the word, like build, right?
- 2:48Like it builds over time, it compounds,
- 2:51and you keep getting the results over time.
- 2:54If you are starting a yoga practice, let's say,
- 2:58if you're new to yoga, which I know a lot of you here in the session aren't,
- 3:02but maybe some people listening to the recording might be,
- 3:06pace yourself.
- 3:06and if you go into a yoga class and like just exhaust yourself the first few times and then
- 3:14you decide okay yoga is not for me or you're starting meditation let's say you do the first
- 3:19few meditations you do really long meditations right some difficult ones and then you're like
- 3:23you know what meditation is not for me so just know that when you're building a habit the first
- 3:29things you're going to face is the stuff that needs to be dealt with right the stuff that needs
- 3:34to be cleared, the stuff that needs to be healed. You're going to be met with some obstacles,
- 3:39just like with anything in life. When we chart course to get from A to B, so to speak, to get
- 3:46from where you are to something that you want to create in your life, it's a journey. And you want
- 3:53to learn to love the journey and love the challenges, the ups and downs, the ins and outs,
- 4:00because it's the journey, as they say, right?
- 4:03The journey is the destination.
- 4:05So when you're building a habit, slow down, pace yourself,
- 4:10break it down into the smallest, most manageable chunks
- 4:14so that when it's smaller manageable chunks,
- 4:17so let's say if it's like meditation, you've never meditated before,
- 4:21start with five minutes, right?
- 4:22Do five minutes of meditation every day for a week or two
- 4:26until you can feel like, yeah, five minutes is doable.
- 4:30doing these five minutes. Now I'm ready to turn it up to seven minutes or 10 minutes, right? Not
- 4:36that more minutes is better, but the consistency part is the key thing. So then turn it up little
- 4:43by little so that as you're turning it up from five to 10 minutes, whether it's a yoga practice,
- 4:48whether it's a meditation, don't forget also to acknowledge the progress that you've already made.
- 4:56because we tend to always sometimes just look for what's missing.
- 5:01And when you're looking for what's missing,
- 5:03what you need to do better,
- 5:05which obviously is a good thing to do,
- 5:07but if that's your only focus,
- 5:09it's difficult to feel good about it, right?
- 5:12So you also want to add as many steps in the stages,
- 5:16be able to stop and acknowledge how much you've already done,
- 5:21how far you've already come,
- 5:23how much progress you've already made,
- 5:25grown. And if you've done one day of meditation for five minutes, that's not easy. That's a lot
- 5:32compared to maybe never having done meditation before. So you want to have those points where
- 5:39daily, weekly, whatever it is that you set yourself, that you're really stopping to acknowledge
- 5:45your progress and how far you've come. So you're building in this kind of loops of acknowledgement
- 5:51and you can say even gratitude, right?
- 5:54So gratitude and acknowledgement,
- 5:56it kind of fuels, right?
- 5:59Gives you fuel to go into the next step,
- 6:01the next stage.
- 6:02Therefore, it keeps feeding itself
- 6:05so that you can continue to build the habit,
- 6:08whatever the habit that you're wanting to build,
- 6:10whether it's your physical fitness, right?
- 6:13Your yoga practice, or it's your meditation,
- 6:16or you're delving into inner work, right?
- 6:18And maybe you're journaling,
- 6:21to write this kind of work slow small consistent steps is the key and i know i've said it many
- 6:28many many times but i'm just saying in a different way right now applying it to this time of year
- 6:34when you know everyone's like yes i'm really motivated that's awesome use that energy to start
- 6:40because sometimes that first step is the hardest step the journey of a thousand steps begins with
- 6:46the first and the first step is really difficult maybe even procrastinating it with it for a long
- 6:51time maybe you delayed it for months and you thought i'll wait for new years because new
- 6:56years seems to be the time like okay so it's new year now so use that momentum use that energy
- 7:02and then start small and build and build consistently so that it becomes
- 7:11kind of like your companion, you could say, right?
- 7:14Like your yoga practice becomes your buddy,
- 7:17becomes your friend that kind of holds your hand
- 7:20and can walk you through life for the rest of the year,
- 7:25for the rest of your life,
- 7:26and to give you the foundation underneath, right?
- 7:30Like a stable, steady ground for you to stand on,
- 7:33which is built on your practice,
- 7:35like your yoga practice and or your meditation practice,
- 7:38let's say.
