Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program here on thirteen
- 0:03Speaker 1: hundred of the zone. My name is Craig Way. Glad
- 0:05Speaker 1: to be with you, and right now as we bring
- 0:09Speaker 1: you the program from UFCU dish forag Field, it's seventy
- 0:11Speaker 1: six degrees. I know there's till parts of the area
- 0:16Speaker 1: that are technically technically under a tornado watch until four
- 0:20Speaker 1: o'clock this afternoon. And it was monsoon like Build the
- 0:25Speaker 1: Arc style conditions this morning all around the Greater Austin,
- 0:28Speaker 1: Central Texas area, heavy heavy rain. I got drenched like
- 0:33Speaker 1: a drowned rat taking a vehicle to get repaired this morning.
- 0:39Speaker 1: But now the skies have cleared, and you know, it's
- 0:45Speaker 1: beautiful sunny conditions here at the ballpark. Traffic's even actually
- 0:49Speaker 1: moving a little bit on the upper deck of I
- 0:51Speaker 1: thirty five. So anyway, we're out of here because the
- 0:54Speaker 1: Long Corn baseball team has its final non conference game
- 1:00Speaker 1: of the regular season coming up tonight. They'll play a
- 1:03Speaker 1: really good Lamar Cardinal team that's won thirty seven ballgames
- 1:08Speaker 1: this season, and it's the final midweek game of the
- 1:12Speaker 1: season for Texas. They don't play a midweek game next
- 1:16Speaker 1: week with the Quick turnaround in the Thursday game to
- 1:20Speaker 1: start off that final regular season concluding series in Norman,
- 1:24Speaker 1: Oklahoma against the Oklahoma Sooners next weekend, which could wind
- 1:27Speaker 1: up being.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Really really important.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Certainly, the series this weekend at home on Senior Weekend
- 1:34Speaker 1: against the Florida Gators will be very, very important toward
- 1:38Speaker 1: the log Warrens continued hopes to lead wire to wire
- 1:43Speaker 1: to win the SEC Championship. Of course, those plans and
- 1:47Speaker 1: hopes took a hit, a sizeable one in the series
- 1:52Speaker 1: sweeping lost weekend at Arkansas, and Arkansas passed Texas and
- 1:59Speaker 1: two of the pole this week. The Longhorns were number
- 2:03Speaker 1: one in two of the other polls including D one
- 2:06Speaker 1: baseball dot Com, and I think Texas.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Is number three.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Imperfect game, but the most important thing right now is
- 2:12Speaker 1: trying to get this team back on the uptick, finish
- 2:16Speaker 1: out the regular season strong to hopefully win the SEC
- 2:21Speaker 1: regular season championship locked down a top eight national seed,
- 2:25Speaker 1: if not the overall number one national seed, which is
- 2:28Speaker 1: also still very much in play, but it'll depend on
- 2:32Speaker 1: how the Longhorns play the rest of this week and
- 2:34Speaker 1: then certainly next.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Week as well.
- 2:37Speaker 1: All right back in play and back in the studios
- 2:41Speaker 1: at the Zone at the Iheartcompound is our producer Cameron D.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Parker.
- 2:48Speaker 1: The D and the birth certificate stands for Dallas, as
- 2:51Speaker 1: he was named for his favorite pro football team that
- 2:55Speaker 1: he is refusing to watch and follow right now as
- 2:57Speaker 1: he continues his disgust in the way that team has
- 3:00Speaker 1: been operated. So the D this morning stood for deluge
- 3:06Speaker 1: because we had all the rain. But maybe it stands
- 3:10Speaker 1: for I don't know, you're coming off a little little
- 3:13Speaker 1: break of a weekend, So how that go for you?
- 3:16Speaker 1: By the way, you're able to step away for a
- 3:18Speaker 1: few days and kind of catch a breath before we
- 3:21Speaker 1: get to the stretch drive of baseball season.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Craig, the D stands for don't foul, Dad, Now, don't
- 3:28Speaker 3: foul up by three, especially if you're gonna foul, don't
- 3:31Speaker 3: foul immediately so that no time comes off the clock.
- 3:34Speaker 3: It could stand for Denver with that incredible win. Or
- 3:37Speaker 3: it could stand for the Dallas Stars who had that
- 3:39Speaker 3: incredible come from behind victory in Game seven. Uh, what
- 3:43Speaker 3: a victory for the Stars. And now we'll face the
- 3:47Speaker 3: Winnipeg Jets in round two. So it contend for a
- 3:51Speaker 3: lot of things on this Tuesday afternoon.
- 3:53Speaker 2: But good afternoon.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Glad to be back with you guys here and looking
- 3:57Speaker 3: forward to Texas baseball, hopefully recovering from a dour weekend
- 4:02Speaker 3: in vaytte film.
- 4:03Speaker 1: There's another d word, Okay, a dour weekend dotted with
- 4:08Speaker 1: three defeats. So hopefully they turned that around. All right, Uh,
- 4:13Speaker 1: we're going to talk about all those topics that you
- 4:16Speaker 1: brought up. Uh, certainly that would be uh the Oklahoma
- 4:19Speaker 1: City Thunder that was inexplicably seeing an eleven point lead
- 4:24Speaker 1: in the final minutes slip away.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I think you made a very good.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Point, although I thought, you know, on the on the
- 4:30Speaker 1: TMT post game show, H Kenny Smith did a really
- 4:33Speaker 1: good job of pointing that out. On the inside of
- 4:36Speaker 1: the NBA Charles Barkley didn't agree with it. He said, Hey,
- 4:38Speaker 1: it's as simple as who missed the two free throws
- 4:44Speaker 1: for the thunder? Yeah, you make the two free throws.
- 4:48Speaker 1: It's not it's not an issue. Well maybe it wouldn't
- 4:51Speaker 1: have been. Maybe maybe you know, Gordon hits the three
- 4:56Speaker 1: anyway two uh, and then it would tie and send
- 5:00Speaker 1: an overtime.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Who knows.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But I do agree with you that the early fouling
- 5:06Speaker 1: leaving time on the clock, I think was And they
- 5:10Speaker 1: asked him about it in the post game and he
- 5:12Speaker 1: said he liked their plan for what they did, they
- 5:15Speaker 1: didn't execute quite the way. I think when they go
- 5:17Speaker 1: back and review that, they're gonna look at that and go,
- 5:19Speaker 1: you know, we fouled too early. There was one time
- 5:21Speaker 1: in less than ten you know, a few tenths of
- 5:23Speaker 1: a second, less than a second went off the clock
- 5:26Speaker 1: from like what ten points something to nine point seven,
- 5:30Speaker 1: So I think they'll probably look at that.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You mentioned the Dallas Stars.
- 5:34Speaker 1: They played a night in Winnipeg, and if the Stars
- 5:39Speaker 1: inexplicable finish down to nothing in the third period in
- 5:43Speaker 1: Game seven of Colorado before scoring four unanswered goals, three
- 5:47Speaker 1: from Eko Ranton and who it was just amazing what
- 5:50Speaker 1: he did. If that was incredible enough Sunday night, the
- 5:57Speaker 1: finish for Winnipeg down in the third with a couple
- 6:00Speaker 1: of goals, including one with one second to go in regulation,
- 6:03Speaker 1: then winning it in the second overtime might even be crazier.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But that is setting the table for what could be
- 6:10Speaker 1: a fabulous Western Conference summifinal series there. So we'll talk
- 6:16Speaker 1: about those two things we'll also discuss the other NBA
- 6:21Speaker 1: playoff series, Nix with an eyebrow raising win in Game
- 6:27Speaker 1: one in overtime at Boston. Of course, on Sunday, the
- 6:31Speaker 1: Pacers lost at home in Game one to Indiana. So
- 6:36Speaker 1: three the first three series, the lower seeded team has won.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Now we'll see what happens tonight, And it's kind of
- 6:44Speaker 1: a little bit different anyway, because Minnesota and Golden State
- 6:47Speaker 1: are the six and seven seeds anyway, so it's a
- 6:49Speaker 1: little it's a little bit different in their case.
- 6:51Speaker 2: But we'll kind of follow that.
- 6:54Speaker 1: We'll get to a couple of Major League Baseball things,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and obviously we're going to talk long Worn Baseball.
- 6:58Speaker 2: And we'll do that.
- 6:59Speaker 1: But but coming up next, we're going to talk Tackta
- 7:03Speaker 1: Softball with a head coach of the Long Orange, Mike White,
- 7:06Speaker 1: as his team prepares to head for the SEC Tournament
- 7:13Speaker 1: in Athens, Georgia. And don't we have a broadcast of
- 7:16Speaker 1: a game of that coming up cam.
- 7:17Speaker 3: We do Opening Round for softball, which is technically Day
- 7:21Speaker 3: three of the SEC Softball Tournament. We're going to bring
- 7:24Speaker 3: it to you actually live on this station right here,
- 7:27Speaker 3: thirteen hundred on Thursday three forty five pm first pitch. Now,
- 7:32Speaker 3: of course, if they do win, they'll play a little
- 7:34Speaker 3: bit later in the day on Friday, and then if
- 7:36Speaker 3: they're in the SEC Championship on Saturday, it will conflict
- 7:39Speaker 3: with Texas Baseball and round Rock Express. But we're hoping
- 7:43Speaker 3: for another long postseason run for Mike White, and when
- 7:47Speaker 3: we are a bit able to, we will bring it
- 7:49Speaker 3: to you right here on thirteen hundred zone.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Good, all right, So we'll have that on Thursday afternoon.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It'll be a quarterfinal game since they're getting one of
- 7:57Speaker 1: the double buys, and so we'll have that for you
- 8:01Speaker 1: on Thursday afternoon. Up next, we visit with the head
- 8:04Speaker 1: coach of Texas Softball. Mike White, will join us when
- 8:06Speaker 1: we continue on thirteen under the zone. It's the Craig
- 8:11Speaker 1: Way Show with the voice of the Texas Longhorns in
- 8:15Speaker 1: Hall of Fame broadcast.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Craig Way. Just let me know where.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Back here at UFCU Diish Folk Field as we get
- 8:30Speaker 1: ready for long Horn Baseball tonight, as Texas will take on.
- 8:34Speaker 2: The Lamar Cardinals.
- 8:36Speaker 1: That'll be a six fifteen pregame start time and a
- 8:40Speaker 1: six thirty first pitch. But as we mentioned, it's postseason
- 8:45Speaker 1: time for collegiate softball, and that means it's postseason time
- 8:49Speaker 1: for the Texas Longhorns SEC tournament time, getting ready to
- 8:52Speaker 1: play in their first ever SEC softball tournament at Jack
- 8:57Speaker 1: Turner Stadium in Athens, George. Now that'll be coming up
- 9:01Speaker 1: on Thursday. The long Horns will head over there tomorrow
- 9:04Speaker 1: to get ready. We're pleased to have joining us on
- 9:06Speaker 1: the hotline right now, and they head coach of the Longhorns,
- 9:08Speaker 1: Mike White, has joined us, and Mike, I appreciate the time.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And after the Noah's ArcLight conditions of the morning, with
- 9:16Speaker 1: all of that out of the way, where was your
- 9:18Speaker 1: group able to get in some work even indoors before
- 9:22Speaker 1: you know, getting ready to head out to Georgia tomorrow?
- 9:26Speaker 4: Yes, sir, well, for fortunately we're able to get in
- 9:28Speaker 4: yesterday morning before the monsoon started, and then this morning
- 9:31Speaker 4: we were in the bubble and then finished up on
- 9:33Speaker 4: our indoor facilities, so we're able to get some pretty
- 9:35Speaker 4: good practice time in, so you know we're ready to go.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 9:40Speaker 1: How would you describe I mean, your your team is
- 9:43Speaker 1: no longer a knea fight so to speak, in the
- 9:47Speaker 1: SEC if you've been through an entire regular season. Now,
- 9:50Speaker 1: it's just like when coaches say that freshmen aren't freshmen
- 9:52Speaker 1: anymore by the time you get to the end of
- 9:54Speaker 1: the freshman year. All that said, do you get a
- 9:57Speaker 1: sense of excitement from your group? I mean, anytime you
- 9:59Speaker 1: get in the tournament play, I'm sure there's excitement, but
- 10:02Speaker 1: the fact that this is their first ever foray into
- 10:04Speaker 1: the SEC tournament, you do you get that kind of
- 10:07Speaker 1: sense from them, the excitement of participating in this event
- 10:10Speaker 1: for the first time.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Yes, definitely. I mean it's almost like a many college
- 10:14Speaker 4: World Series. You know, this ESPN's present and there's a
- 10:18Speaker 4: lot of media and you know, the same kind of
- 10:19Speaker 4: stuff that goes on in the College World Series. So
- 10:21Speaker 4: it's a great opportunity to pray people one and hopefully
- 10:24Speaker 4: for a postseason run and we'll get ready and get
- 10:26Speaker 4: back there to Oklaoma City.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Well and one of the things, Yeah, and I guess
- 10:30Speaker 1: that's that's the nice into the road thing for folks
- 10:33Speaker 1: who might have missed your team or will miss out
- 10:37Speaker 1: on seeing them, like in Oklahoma City during conference tournament play,
- 10:40Speaker 1: there's always that light at the end of the tunnel
- 10:43Speaker 1: that carrot there to get a chance to play there
- 10:45Speaker 1: anyway for the national in the Women's.
- 10:48Speaker 2: College World Series.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Let me start with how you feel about your group
- 10:53Speaker 1: now coming off the sweep of Kentucky, getting through the
- 10:56Speaker 1: weekend after a grinder of an SEC schedule. How do
- 11:00Speaker 1: you feel about your group right now and the way
- 11:02Speaker 1: they're playing as you head on endo the conference tournament.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Yeah, the three weeks here we were in l s U,
- 11:09Speaker 4: Tennessee and Oklahoma. There was that was a tough stretch
- 11:12Speaker 4: that was like a goolant there of the you know,
- 11:14Speaker 4: three of the top teams in the conference and kind
- 11:16Speaker 4: of beat us up a little bit. You know, we
- 11:18Speaker 4: took a took a sweep there at Oklahoma and we
- 11:21Speaker 4: split that. We won the series against LSU in Tennessee.
- 11:23Speaker 4: So it was difficult, but I think we learned a
- 11:26Speaker 4: lot and we're able to kind of reset a little
- 11:28Speaker 4: bit against against Kentucky and loot some stuff and hopefully
- 11:31Speaker 4: we can come out and play relaxed, to play aggressive
- 11:33Speaker 4: type softball. I think they let uh let things get
- 11:36Speaker 4: away from us a little bit there. I gave up
- 11:38Speaker 4: too many runs on the pitching stuff, and hopefully we
- 11:41Speaker 4: can do a lot better going into this tournament.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Well, one of those players who seems to be playing
- 11:46Speaker 1: really lose for you and and free and easy, and
- 11:48Speaker 1: we saw it when she was a freshman. But how
- 11:50Speaker 1: about Katie Stewart and the things she's done. Uh, she's
- 11:53Speaker 1: sec player of the week, the player of the week
- 11:55Speaker 1: for the NFC A. Uh, what what do you seeing
- 11:58Speaker 1: from her that has her just on fire of late?
- 12:02Speaker 4: Yeah, we saw that about two or three weeks ago.
- 12:04Speaker 4: She started to get a lot more confident. She was
- 12:06Speaker 4: down on herself there. We moved her down the lineup
- 12:09Speaker 4: from you know, fifth behind at what into the sixth position,
- 12:12Speaker 4: just to take a little bit of pressure off and
- 12:14Speaker 4: and now she started to really bounce back and like
- 12:16Speaker 4: what she's at behind Reese. It takes Reese quite a
- 12:18Speaker 4: bit and she's coming into her own and she's really
- 12:20Speaker 4: swinging the bat well, and that gets us pretty excited.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Mike, do you see that as one of the challenges
- 12:26Speaker 1: of coaching is not only for a head coach, but
- 12:30Speaker 1: for assistant coaches, for any of your other group, for
- 12:33Speaker 1: Steve Singleton or Kristen Zeleski or Patti rut Taylor, any
- 12:37Speaker 1: of your other members of your coaching staff. When you're
- 12:41Speaker 1: working with someone in trying to get them to get
- 12:45Speaker 1: the performance level up, and sometimes it necessitates a move
- 12:49Speaker 1: down in the lineup, some coaches up in the lineup,
- 12:51Speaker 1: depending on where you wanted him. For them to understand,
- 12:55Speaker 1: it's not a punitive thing, but it's a thing that's
- 12:57Speaker 1: going to help out not only the kid, but it's
- 12:59Speaker 1: certainly going to help out the team in the short term,
- 13:02Speaker 1: if not also for the long term.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly, everything is based around the team. We tell
- 13:07Speaker 4: them that it's not a personal decision, you know, even
- 13:09Speaker 4: though it may seem like it at times, but certainly
- 13:12Speaker 4: not punishment. It's just, you know, just to kind of
- 13:14Speaker 4: maybe get you relaxed and reset and get to get
- 13:17Speaker 4: your your mind back to where it needs to be.
- 13:19Speaker 4: And fortunately, you know, we haven't had made too many
- 13:22Speaker 4: changes at the top of the line up. You know,
- 13:24Speaker 4: the top four have kind of stayed the same. It's
- 13:25Speaker 4: just a bottom hop there. We've got to kind of
- 13:27Speaker 4: mix and match just a little bit, and you kind
- 13:29Speaker 4: of go with your gut feeling and you kind of,
- 13:31Speaker 4: you know, play some players in certain positions depending on
- 13:34Speaker 4: the pitching that you're facing. But fortunately, the top four
- 13:37Speaker 4: have been really pretty steady.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I was going to ask you to talk
- 13:40Speaker 1: about those top four, but before I get you to
- 13:43Speaker 1: dive into that, I'm curious to get I heard it
- 13:46Speaker 1: saw a couple of the sound bites with Mia Scott
- 13:49Speaker 1: playing all of the positions. Baseball did that several years ago,
- 13:53Speaker 1: where we had a guy named Jake McKenzie who did
- 13:55Speaker 1: all nine one night, but that was a non conference
- 13:57Speaker 1: game on a Tuesday night against I think U t
- 14:00Speaker 1: R G V and things. We're gonna be well in
- 14:02Speaker 1: place on I mean, you're doing that or she's doing
- 14:05Speaker 1: that in the in the down the stretch of a
- 14:07Speaker 1: conference regular season. How did that whole thing generate into
- 14:12Speaker 1: all of a sudden, here's me of playing every position
- 14:14Speaker 1: on the field.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Yeah, well me has always kind of joked about wanting
- 14:18Speaker 4: to pitch, and she wanted to catch, and she wanted
- 14:20Speaker 4: to do these different things. So I was like, okay, Kiffer,
- 14:22Speaker 4: what you mentioned, we're going to put you into it.
- 14:24Speaker 4: So it started off, we said let's go, you know,
- 14:26Speaker 4: see what you got and you put your money with
- 14:28Speaker 4: your mouth this kind of thing, and uh, you know,
- 14:31Speaker 4: I didn't know much about it until we started actually
- 14:33Speaker 4: the game. So it was kind of kept for me,
- 14:34Speaker 4: but coach a Leski was was the one behind it
- 14:37Speaker 4: a lot of it, and so it just evolved into
- 14:40Speaker 4: its own little beast there and we unfortunately we're able
- 14:42Speaker 4: to do it. And you know, the game still meant
- 14:44Speaker 4: something because I mean difference between third and fourth place
- 14:46Speaker 4: and who we played, you know, in the in the
- 14:49Speaker 4: matchups for the now on Thursday, so you know it
- 14:53Speaker 4: didn't mean something, but she was able to kind of
- 14:55Speaker 4: come through it unscathed and we're able to win the
- 14:57Speaker 4: game with some comfort and you know with as we scored.
- 15:01Speaker 2: No doubt about it.
- 15:01Speaker 1: This is when Mike White, Texas Softball coaching for a
- 15:04Speaker 1: few more minutes. Mike, let me get you to give
- 15:06Speaker 1: a little detail what you were talking about with regard
- 15:09Speaker 1: to the pitching, because for a lot of the season
- 15:11Speaker 1: had been really really good and then there was a
- 15:14Speaker 1: struggle or too and a stumble or two down the stretch.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Was it anything acutely identifiable that that you could see
- 15:23Speaker 1: and and how did you and the staff go about
- 15:26Speaker 1: addressing it with your staff to try to get things
- 15:29Speaker 1: turned and flipped back around.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's it's sometimes you're going know, is
- 15:34Speaker 4: this a physical thing or does a mental thing and
- 15:36Speaker 4: you kind of like bouncing different stuff around trying to
- 15:38Speaker 4: figure it all out. And you know the other thing,
- 15:41Speaker 4: it was a combination. You know, there was some physical
- 15:42Speaker 4: things that we looked at, you know, some some stuff
- 15:45Speaker 4: that Teagan was doing, you know, and then also just
- 15:48Speaker 4: getting behind just walking too many batters. You're putting a
- 15:51Speaker 4: lot more pressure on yourself. And you know, the the
- 15:54Speaker 4: zones are pretty tight. You know, they shrunk a little
- 15:56Speaker 4: bit in the SEC for sure, and then coming the postseason,
- 16:00Speaker 4: so just adjustments we had to make. I like where
- 16:03Speaker 4: Tigan's at right now, and you know that's the one
- 16:06Speaker 4: we need. We need Teagan to be firing and all
- 16:08Speaker 4: celling us absolutely.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And is that also something too that you've noticed. And
- 16:14Speaker 1: I'm I'm speaking about this from the perspective of somebody
- 16:17Speaker 1: who just called three games in Arkansas of the weekend
- 16:21Speaker 1: that saw the pitching staff issue thirty one free passes,
- 16:25Speaker 1: there were twenty two walks and nine hit batters. So
- 16:27Speaker 1: I so so I'm I'm hearing exactly what you're saying.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And in the case of some of those one thing
- 16:33Speaker 1: that coach Los Negle talked about and Max weener, the
- 16:35Speaker 1: pitching coaches, guys just trying to be too fine sometimes
- 16:39Speaker 1: instead of just cutting loose and doing what they do best.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Was there some of that also, not only with Tigan
- 16:44Speaker 1: but with the rest of the staff.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Yeah, no, definitely. We're talking them about, you know, perfect pitching. Yeah,
- 16:49Speaker 4: that can really cause you some issues. You're trying to
- 16:51Speaker 4: be perfect all the time, and you know, good hitters
- 16:53Speaker 4: are good at not swinging that stuff and straightening the
- 16:55Speaker 4: strike zone. So you really got to trust your stuff
- 16:58Speaker 4: and attack. And you know, the number or pitches we
- 17:00Speaker 4: were thrown, we give them even better looks at us,
- 17:02Speaker 4: you know, So it's kind of like a catch twenty two.
- 17:05Speaker 4: You've got to really kind of like take your chances
- 17:07Speaker 4: and say I'd rather get you earlier than later. So
- 17:10Speaker 4: it's definitely something we leve from and something we're told
- 17:12Speaker 4: Tatiak and then the rest and stuff about as well.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Let me get your thoughts now on this SEC tournament.
- 17:17Speaker 1: You're not going to play until Thursday, and not yet
- 17:20Speaker 1: sure who it is you'd be playing. It could be
- 17:24Speaker 1: you know, two of the two teams is that that
- 17:27Speaker 1: start their game this afternoon, Missouri and Old miss It
- 17:30Speaker 1: could be Florida obviously waiting on the winner of that,
- 17:33Speaker 1: you get the double buys as well. How about the
- 17:36Speaker 1: challenges for you and for your staff. Uh, there's the
- 17:39Speaker 1: benefit of the double buy and you started in the quarterfinals.
- 17:42Speaker 1: But by the same token, there's a lot to examine
- 17:45Speaker 1: in terms of those teams. How much does the familiarity
- 17:48Speaker 1: of playing those teams during the season help shorten the
- 17:51Speaker 1: curve a little bit?
- 17:51Speaker 2: There?
- 17:52Speaker 4: Yeah, it certainly helps without a doubt. Obviously we haven't
- 17:55Speaker 4: played Old Miss, but we've played we've played the other two,
- 17:58Speaker 4: so that kind of makes it a little bit easier.
- 17:59Speaker 4: But then you get into the semis and it could
- 18:01Speaker 4: be Texas A and M and could be on CO
- 18:03Speaker 4: and so it could be any one number of the
- 18:04Speaker 4: teams that we that we haven't played, you know. So
- 18:08Speaker 4: it's it's like one of those deal you know, you
- 18:09Speaker 4: kind of take fifteen folders with the MVP PID, so
- 18:12Speaker 4: some of it we's got to kind of wing it,
- 18:14Speaker 4: you know, and just do the best we can.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt about Now.
- 18:18Speaker 1: For folks who fans who are interested in how a
- 18:21Speaker 1: team goes about the on site preparation, you travel tomorrow
- 18:26Speaker 1: and of course you wouldn't play till Thursday, and how
- 18:29Speaker 1: much of what you have to do in terms of
- 18:32Speaker 1: your off site prep before you get into the stadium itself,
- 18:35Speaker 1: plus the scouting that goes on, Just to give long
- 18:37Speaker 1: warn fans a little bit of an idea how all
- 18:39Speaker 1: of that works for you and for your staff as
- 18:41Speaker 1: well as for the team as you travel tomorrow.
- 18:44Speaker 4: Yeah, it's actually it's quite difficult because we're staying over
- 18:47Speaker 4: an hour away because you know, obviously we didn't know
- 18:49Speaker 4: about it till late and you know, it's a graduation
- 18:52Speaker 4: weekend there and you know in Athens and so all
- 18:56Speaker 4: all the hotels rooms are booked up. So the closest
- 18:58Speaker 4: we get was over an hour away. So and then
- 19:00Speaker 4: we can't get to practice on that the actual Athens field,
- 19:03Speaker 4: so that we've got to practice on another high school field.
- 19:06Speaker 4: So we've got that organized. So you know, it's really
- 19:08Speaker 4: kind of going into that game against you know who
- 19:11Speaker 4: we play, it is going to be a little bit cold,
- 19:13Speaker 4: playing on a new new surpas and new area, so
- 19:16Speaker 4: you know, that's what we've got to look at. Fortunately,
- 19:18Speaker 4: we've got some software programs where we can scout teams
- 19:21Speaker 4: and obviously we'll be watching TV this afternoon and then
- 19:24Speaker 4: obviously tomorrow if we have an opportunity to watch those
- 19:27Speaker 4: games going on and pick up some stuff from that.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Depending on the matchups and what has happened and who
- 19:33Speaker 1: you might match up with, does that also affect on
- 19:38Speaker 1: how you want to set up your pitching for this
- 19:41Speaker 1: or is it just starting with Teagan and seeing where
- 19:43Speaker 1: it carries you.
- 19:44Speaker 4: You know, we haven't made that decision yet, but it
- 19:47Speaker 4: could depend on who we have come through. I know
- 19:49Speaker 4: Mac Morgan's pitch pretty well against Florida, you know, so
- 19:53Speaker 4: that could be a choice we have with Florida comes through,
- 19:56Speaker 4: you know, almost hasn't seen any of us right now,
- 19:58Speaker 4: We've got to look at your hitters little bit more. Obviously,
- 20:01Speaker 4: we played Missouri and we were able to do a
- 20:03Speaker 4: pretty good job against Sam. Sit Riley did well against Sam,
- 20:05Speaker 4: So so it could depend on who comes through that
- 20:08Speaker 4: side of the bracket.
- 20:09Speaker 1: All right, Hey, Mike, I really appreciate you taking the time.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I know it's a busy time. Glad you you were
- 20:14Speaker 1: in your group were able to get dried out a
- 20:15Speaker 1: little bit and then get ready to get on the
- 20:17Speaker 1: plane tomorrow to go to Georgia, and we wish you
- 20:20Speaker 1: all the best luck. We're looking forward to having Andrew
- 20:23Speaker 1: Haynes bring everybody the broadcast live here on the Zone
- 20:26Speaker 1: on Thursday afternoon.
- 20:27Speaker 2: I appreciate you taking the time.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Oh, thanks great, We appreciate you. And Andrew does a
- 20:32Speaker 4: great job.
- 20:32Speaker 1: So and welcome, Yeah, welcome, thank you, and of course
- 20:36Speaker 1: Andrew Haynes a voice of Texas Softball. We'll have the
- 20:39Speaker 1: play by play call on that and we will bring
- 20:42Speaker 1: that game to you on Thursday afternoon from Athens live
- 20:46Speaker 1: here on the Zone. Andrew will have the call of
- 20:48Speaker 1: that Texas against either Florida or Old miss or Missouri.
- 20:52Speaker 1: It is kind of interesting in that here's Missouri or
- 20:56Speaker 1: excuse me, Old miss As you just heard might say
- 21:01Speaker 1: they didn't play them.
- 21:02Speaker 2: That's one of the teams they didn't play.
- 21:03Speaker 1: It's interesting too, like Long Horn baseball team did play
- 21:07Speaker 1: Missouri this year, but they played him in Arlington the
- 21:10Speaker 1: second game of the year. And what didn't count in
- 21:13Speaker 1: the conference standings. It was a non conference setting in
- 21:17Speaker 1: that classic, the Shriners Hospital Children's Classic up in Arlington.
- 21:23Speaker 1: It didn't count in the conference standings. Texas won that
- 21:26Speaker 1: game ten nothing, but it did not count in conference play,
- 21:29Speaker 1: but they didn't play Ole Miss in a conference series.
- 21:32Speaker 1: The teams at Texas. You know, with sixteen baseball playing institutions,
- 21:38Speaker 1: not every team can play every team because you're going
- 21:43Speaker 1: to have a ten game or a ten series conference schedule,
- 21:49Speaker 1: so there's going to be five that you don't play.
- 21:52Speaker 1: And the five teams that Texas does not face this
- 21:55Speaker 1: year are Tennessee, Vanderbilt, also South Carolina, Ole Miss, and Alabama.
- 22:04Speaker 1: So those five schools Texas does not face in baseball
- 22:08Speaker 1: this year. But anyway, that's and softball goes to the
- 22:12Speaker 1: same thing, and the tournament setups are very very similar
- 22:16Speaker 1: as there is the bracketing done for it. It is
- 22:20Speaker 1: you know, single elimination now and with the size of
- 22:24Speaker 1: these conferences, single elimination tournaments really have become the vogue.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Same thing in the Big Twelve. Fourteen of the sixteen
- 22:32Speaker 1: teams in the Big Twelve play baseball. Colorado does not
- 22:35Speaker 1: play baseball, Iowa State does not play baseball, but the
- 22:38Speaker 1: other the other fourteen schools do, so they have a
- 22:43Speaker 1: single elimination event as well, and their event starts on
- 22:48Speaker 1: Tuesday and goes all the way through Saturday. They must
- 22:51Speaker 1: compete on Saturday because of BYU being in the league,
- 22:55Speaker 1: and of course BYU does not play have athletic contests
- 22:58Speaker 1: on Sundays.
- 23:00Speaker 2: They go Tuesday through Saturday.
- 23:01Speaker 1: The unique setup of the SEC tournament is such that
- 23:06Speaker 1: while it begins on Tuesday and the Longhorns are in
- 23:09Speaker 1: really good position to get a double by just like
- 23:11Speaker 1: Mike White's softball team has that the Longhorns would then
- 23:19Speaker 1: play look to play on Thursday, and if they win
- 23:22Speaker 1: that game, they would get Friday off and the semifinals
- 23:24Speaker 1: would be Saturday, with the championship game set for Sunday.
- 23:28Speaker 1: So nuances and wrinkles there. Because it's a sixteen team
- 23:32Speaker 1: field as well, the one to four quarter final winner
- 23:37Speaker 1: would play on Saturday, and the or the one versus
- 23:42Speaker 1: eight nine I guess, and the four versus five twelve
- 23:45Speaker 1: win or whatever would be would be on Thursday, and
- 23:49Speaker 1: the winner that would then get a buy into the
- 23:51Speaker 1: semifinals on.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Saturday in the championship game on Sunday.
- 23:56Speaker 1: So that's the nuances and the differences with regard to
- 24:00Speaker 1: the baseball and softball tournaments this season for the University
- 24:04Speaker 1: of Texas in their first season in the SEC. All right,
- 24:08Speaker 1: we've got Inconceivable coming up next, and we'll get into
- 24:13Speaker 1: more NBA conversation this afternoon.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Also, our text line is hoping.
- 24:16Speaker 1: If you have a question or a comment, a thought
- 24:19Speaker 1: you'd like to share with us, all you have to
- 24:21Speaker 1: do is avail yourself.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Of our text line.
- 24:24Speaker 1: You text the word Texas follow by your question or
- 24:28Speaker 1: comment to eight one five three zero. So again, text
- 24:32Speaker 1: the word Texas follow by your question or comment to
- 24:35Speaker 1: eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates
- 24:39Speaker 1: may apply. Inconceivable is up next when we continue on
- 24:41Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone, the second hour of the program.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Here on a Texan Tuesday, at least I think it's
- 24:49Speaker 1: supposed to be a Textan Tuesday here on thirteen hundred
- 24:55Speaker 1: the Zone. I'm Craig Way out at Ufchu Dish fogg Field.
- 24:58Speaker 1: But the show as always always in the capable hands
- 25:02Speaker 1: of the producer Cameron D. Parker, who established Texan Tuesday
- 25:07Speaker 1: with the decree that the musical offerings on the return
- 25:13Speaker 1: cuts would certainly include, but would not be limited to,
- 25:17Speaker 1: the following. In the four o'clock hour of the King
- 25:20Speaker 1: George Strait, in the three o'clock hour, the iconic Willie Nelson,
- 25:25Speaker 1: and in the two o'clock hour the immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan.
- 25:28Speaker 2: But I didn't hear any Steve Ray. Did we have
- 25:30Speaker 2: Stevie Ray in the first hour?
- 25:32Speaker 3: Honestly, CRACKETU, today was Monday. So that's on me just
- 25:36Speaker 3: learning today's actually Tuesday. So we'll get back to it.
- 25:40Speaker 2: I'll make it up. I'll make up for it here
- 25:41Speaker 2: in the second hour. Okay.
- 25:45Speaker 1: The reason why I brought that up also is because
- 25:50Speaker 1: when I was in fab of Arkansas last weekend, it
- 25:55Speaker 1: was a Thursday, Friday Saturday series and we flew in
- 25:59Speaker 1: on Wednesday, and the weather conditions when we flew in
- 26:03Speaker 1: were much like they were here this morning. I mean
- 26:06Speaker 1: it was you know, the rain was in sheets, torrents
- 26:11Speaker 1: coming down. And remember when I was on with you
- 26:15Speaker 1: Keith and I, we were we were actually driving through
- 26:18Speaker 1: a monsoon at the time, leaving the airport up in
- 26:23Speaker 1: northwest Arkansas and headed into Fayetteville. Well, it was really
- 26:26Speaker 1: really raining, but then it cleared out by Wednesday night
- 26:31Speaker 1: and we went to eat on the on the advice
- 26:34Speaker 1: and the suggestion of many to a rib place, I
- 26:37Speaker 1: thought about, you can because the next time that we
- 26:40Speaker 1: go to Fayetteville for basketball probably instead of eating with
- 26:45Speaker 1: the team, we probably need to go to Herman's rib
- 26:47Speaker 1: House and uh and and you know, really, you know,
- 26:52Speaker 1: engage in some serious uh rib consumption. So we go
- 26:58Speaker 1: when we do that on Wednesday night, right, So Thursday,
- 27:01Speaker 1: we get to the ballpark and you had taken off
- 27:06Speaker 1: for Nashville for the weekend, so we had the Zimbel
- 27:08Speaker 1: hours going on. So he had Andrew Zimmle at the
- 27:11Speaker 1: switch and I was checking in and it was a nice.
- 27:16Speaker 2: It was a nice evening. It was going to be
- 27:17Speaker 2: for baseball.
- 27:18Speaker 1: And I kept thinking it was Friday because I'm used
- 27:21Speaker 1: to Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Friday seemed like Saturday. And
- 27:26Speaker 1: Friday was Keith Morland's birthday. So and I told this
- 27:29Speaker 1: story yesterday, But you need to know about this game
- 27:32Speaker 1: because you were flying back. If we ever go to
- 27:35Speaker 1: Fayetteville again, you should know that if you wind up
- 27:40Speaker 1: having a late night dining experience, and it's difficult to
- 27:48Speaker 1: find one up there because most of the place is closed.
- 27:52Speaker 1: And the Friday night ball game started more than an
- 27:55Speaker 1: hour late because of storms and lightning delays and things
- 27:59Speaker 1: like that. So by the time we got off the
- 28:02Speaker 1: air and got out of the broadcast booth. It was, oh,
- 28:08Speaker 1: I think eleven fifteen, eleven twenty, something like that.
- 28:14Speaker 2: And so we leave there, and you know, and I wanted.
- 28:20Speaker 1: To buy dinner for Keith because it was his birthday.
- 28:23Speaker 2: So I said, let's let's, you know, let's go out
- 28:25Speaker 2: and find a place to eat.
- 28:26Speaker 1: When we'd had a couple of places in mind, and
- 28:28Speaker 1: one of those was actually, you know, one of those
- 28:32Speaker 1: late night diner type situations. They were already closed when
- 28:37Speaker 1: we got there. So then we went to another place
- 28:42Speaker 1: we thought would be open, and it was closed. And then,
- 28:44Speaker 1: you know, because we're just two older men, and we
- 28:46Speaker 1: didn't even bother to check, you know, check check the
- 28:49Speaker 1: apps and check online.
- 28:50Speaker 2: So then we did.
- 28:51Speaker 1: So we checked and saw that there was one place
- 28:54Speaker 1: that was open and it was called Arts Place and
- 28:58Speaker 1: it was on College Avenue. And the thing that it
- 29:01Speaker 1: said was the way it was described was local dive
- 29:05Speaker 1: bar with great burgers. So we said, okay, all right,
- 29:09Speaker 1: we'll do that. We'll go to the local dive bar
- 29:11Speaker 1: with great burgers. So we pull up and sort of
- 29:14Speaker 1: there's one sign that said great burgers there, and there
- 29:17Speaker 1: was another sign not right near the front door that
- 29:19Speaker 1: said notice or attention, and it said this is a
- 29:24Speaker 1: smoking establishment. Now, I was surprised that smoking establishment establishments were.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Still in We're still around.
- 29:35Speaker 1: But went in there and it was like a cumulus
- 29:39Speaker 1: cloud of smoke in there. But we were hungry and
- 29:43Speaker 1: they weren't lying about their burgers. They were good, and
- 29:46Speaker 1: we each had a burger. But when I walked out
- 29:48Speaker 1: of there, I think my eyes were burning or something
- 29:50Speaker 1: after that. So those are just a couple of things
- 29:53Speaker 1: to keep in mind the next time we head for
- 29:55Speaker 1: the Hills and favle Arkansas. Fortunately, Longhorn football won't be
- 29:59Speaker 1: playing there this fall. They'll have the Arkansas Razorbacks coming.
- 30:03Speaker 1: In basketball, of course, is a home and home with them.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Women's basketball only played Arkansas once in the prior season
- 30:11Speaker 1: and that was at home, so they might be headed
- 30:13Speaker 1: up there in the coming season, and then baseball, of course,
- 30:16Speaker 1: would have them at home. And speaking of baseball, Arkansas
- 30:21Speaker 1: going into the weekend is a mere two games back
- 30:26Speaker 1: of Texas in the SEC standings. That was the importance
- 30:31Speaker 1: of building the cushion the prior weekend with the long
- 30:34Speaker 1: worn sweep of Texas A and M, while Arkansas was
- 30:36Speaker 1: dropping two out of three at Florida because then it
- 30:39Speaker 1: built a five game lead with nine to go.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Well, now it's a two game lead with six to.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Go, and that magic number hasn't really changed for Texas,
- 30:50Speaker 1: So they're going to have to, you know, have a
- 30:54Speaker 1: good weekend series against Florida, and then of course LSU
- 30:56Speaker 1: is playing Arkansas and the two will probably I doubt
- 31:02Speaker 1: one will sweep the other, especially in baton rouge, but
- 31:06Speaker 1: I could see one winning two out of three Texas
- 31:10Speaker 1: if they win all three games during the weekend. If
- 31:16Speaker 1: they were to win all three games of the series
- 31:18Speaker 1: during the weekend, and say Arkansas were to lose twice
- 31:21Speaker 1: to LSU, then Texas could wrap up the SEC regular
- 31:25Speaker 1: season title if that happens. If they win the first
- 31:28Speaker 1: two in Arkansas, say loses the first two, Texas could
- 31:30Speaker 1: clinch at least a tie for the title. But remember
- 31:33Speaker 1: they don't have the tie break on Arkansas for what
- 31:36Speaker 1: would be the top seed based on losing the series
- 31:39Speaker 1: to the Razorbacks, but they do have the tie break
- 31:42Speaker 1: on LSU and LSU is four games back. LSU was
- 31:46Speaker 1: only able to pick up one game on Texas over
- 31:50Speaker 1: the weekend because the Tigers dropped two out of three
- 31:52Speaker 1: to Texas.
- 31:53Speaker 2: A and M.
- 31:54Speaker 1: So there's some things to keep in mind about this
- 31:58Speaker 1: going into this weekend with Florida. But they have Lamar first,
- 32:04Speaker 1: and Lamar comes into it with a record of thirty
- 32:07Speaker 1: seven and fourteen, so they've they've been really solid, even
- 32:12Speaker 1: though it looks like they're not going to win the
- 32:15Speaker 1: Southland Conference regular season title.
- 32:18Speaker 2: That looks like that's going to.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Go to ut Rio Grand Valley, that UTRGV is going
- 32:23Speaker 1: to wind up winning that tide. Of course, the long
- 32:25Speaker 1: Wruns beat UTRGV here back. I think it was three
- 32:28Speaker 1: weeks ago when they beat them, and beat them pretty soundly,
- 32:32Speaker 1: beat them eleven to four in that game. But ut
- 32:36Speaker 1: Rio Grand Valley has been good. They have an RPI
- 32:38Speaker 1: of thirty one right now and an overall record of
- 32:43Speaker 1: thirty three and fifteen, so they're good. Lamar will come
- 32:45Speaker 1: in with an RPI of fifty eight, and this tells
- 32:51Speaker 1: you something about RPI and the teams you're playing and
- 32:53Speaker 1: in the conference you play and where you play. Lamar
- 32:57Speaker 1: is thirty seven and fourteen, but their strength of schedule
- 33:02Speaker 1: is two hundred and six, and that's by and large
- 33:06Speaker 1: due to the relative weakness of the Southland Conference. So
- 33:13Speaker 1: they are thirty seven and fourteen. Texas Tech, which is
- 33:18Speaker 1: a number one strength of schedule but has just been
- 33:21Speaker 1: dreadful at times this year and is twelve below five hundred.
- 33:24Speaker 1: At sixteen and twenty eight, they're two below five hundred,
- 33:28Speaker 1: and Big twelve play they're eleven and thirteen and so
- 33:31Speaker 1: normally below five hundred. Numbers like that, both overall in
- 33:34Speaker 1: conference that will get you knocked way, way way down,
- 33:36Speaker 1: But because they're playing the schedule that they are, they're
- 33:40Speaker 1: fifty seventh in the RPI and Lamar's fifty eight in
- 33:44Speaker 1: the RPI. And as far as the SEC teams, and
- 33:47Speaker 1: we gave you the rankings that came out yesterday, Texas
- 33:51Speaker 1: is still number one in two of the polls, and
- 33:56Speaker 1: then they are number two in two poles, and they
- 33:59Speaker 1: are number three in the Perfect Game rankings. They're number
- 34:02Speaker 1: two in the RPI, And you say, how can they
- 34:06Speaker 1: only fall one spot getting swept.
- 34:08Speaker 2: I talked about this last week before they left town.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I said, the teams are judged and maybe a little
- 34:17Speaker 1: more weight given to if you're playing on the road
- 34:19Speaker 1: as opposed to home. Because Georgia had gotten swept over
- 34:24Speaker 1: the weekend had gotten swept by Texas and moved to
- 34:27Speaker 1: number one in the RPI. Georgia swept a road series
- 34:31Speaker 1: at Missouri last weekend, and I know Missouri is now
- 34:34Speaker 1: oer and twenty four in SEC play, but it was
- 34:38Speaker 1: on the road, so Georgia hopped back Texas hoped by
- 34:43Speaker 1: Texas into the number one spot even though they are
- 34:45Speaker 1: four games back of the long runs. In the SEC standings,
- 34:47Speaker 1: Texas is two, Vanderbilt three, Arkansas four, are Auburn four
- 34:51Speaker 1: in Arkansas five in the RPI. So SEC teams occupy
- 34:56Speaker 1: the top five places in the RPI. Then you have
- 35:00Speaker 1: Florida State six, Oregon State seven, Clemson eight.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Then you have.
- 35:04Speaker 1: LSU nine, North Carolina ten, and other SEC schools Alabama thirteen,
- 35:10Speaker 1: Tennessee at fourteen, Ole miss at seventeen, and in Oklahoma
- 35:16Speaker 1: at twenty two.
- 35:18Speaker 2: For teams in the RPI.
- 35:20Speaker 1: By the way, UTSA is twenty one in the RPI
- 35:25Speaker 1: and they're in line to win the American Athletic Conference.
- 35:30Speaker 1: How they're thirty seven to ten and even with a
- 35:32Speaker 1: strength of schedule of one three that they've done so
- 35:36Speaker 1: well in some of the other games and including fifteen
- 35:40Speaker 1: and eight in road games and that has helped out
- 35:42Speaker 1: their RPI there. So those are some of the machinations
- 35:46Speaker 1: that go into that. All right, coming up, we're going
- 35:48Speaker 1: to talk some NBA playoffs also a little bit later on,
- 35:52Speaker 1: we're going to hear from Jim Schlosnigl, the long Warrens
- 35:54Speaker 1: head coaches Texas gets ready to go back to work
- 35:58Speaker 1: tonight against Lamar Cardinals. We'll do all that and more
- 36:00Speaker 1: when we continue on thirteen under the Zone here at
- 36:02Speaker 1: UFCU Dish Falkfield. All right to the NBA, and we
- 36:08Speaker 1: kind of scratched the surface on it a little bit
- 36:10Speaker 1: at the top of the show cam when we were
- 36:13Speaker 1: talking about the issues that the Oklahoma City Thunder had
- 36:17Speaker 1: with Denver, and in terms of a more detailed analysis
- 36:23Speaker 1: of that, I think there were three or four things
- 36:26Speaker 1: that went into play.
- 36:27Speaker 2: On this first and foremost, I.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Would say, really even more so than what happened down
- 36:34Speaker 1: the stretch in the final two to three minutes of
- 36:37Speaker 1: the game and the fouling that happened relatively early in
- 36:42Speaker 1: possessions for Deptford that allowed them to shoot free throws.
- 36:46Speaker 2: In addition to that.
- 36:48Speaker 1: They just it was almost almost I'm gonna say not entirely.
- 36:52Speaker 1: It was almost like the thunder were encountering Kola Jokic
- 36:57Speaker 1: for the first time ever, because that dude was just
- 37:01Speaker 1: and stoppa what they said, it was only the sixth
- 37:03Speaker 1: time in NBA history that a player in the playoffs
- 37:07Speaker 1: had forty or more points, twenty or more rebounds, and
- 37:11Speaker 1: at least five block shots. And he would he get
- 37:13Speaker 1: forty two to twenty two and six I believe in
- 37:16Speaker 1: the game last.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Night, that's correct. He was a monster, Craig.
- 37:20Speaker 3: I mean, he's he's the best player on the planet
- 37:22Speaker 3: right now, and displayed that last night the fourth quarter.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Even though okay See went in up I think by
- 37:28Speaker 3: fourteen and Denver started coming back, they simply could not
- 37:32Speaker 3: stop Jokic offensively.
- 37:35Speaker 2: He was incredible.
- 37:36Speaker 3: He had timely shot or timely shot, the hook shot
- 37:38Speaker 3: and then the three pointer and then you know, ultimately,
- 37:42Speaker 3: you know, we got into a little bit at the
- 37:43Speaker 3: beginning to show the decisions to foul by okay See,
- 37:47Speaker 3: it's the game. They definitely let stip away and I'm
- 37:50Speaker 3: curious to see, how does you know Dagnal and ok
- 37:53Speaker 3: See counter because they just could not stop Yokic at all.
- 37:56Speaker 3: And also you give a lot of credit to what
- 37:59Speaker 3: Aaron Gordon did. Obviously, that three pointer will be replayed
- 38:02Speaker 3: for a long time, especially the Nuggets have a big
- 38:04Speaker 3: playoff run this season and you can upset okay See.
- 38:07Speaker 3: But Gordon was phenomenal and Yokicic was incredible. And it's
- 38:11Speaker 3: surprising Greg because you know, Denver had just played Game
- 38:14Speaker 3: six two days ago, so I was thinking, Okay, okay See,
- 38:17Speaker 3: he's coming in off. You know, a week's rest. Denver's
- 38:21Speaker 3: got to be exhausted. You know, it's such such a short,
- 38:25Speaker 3: you know, turnaround, and Denver has a you know, pretty
- 38:28Speaker 3: limited rotation. Only eight players played last night, but seven
- 38:32Speaker 3: in double fakers. All their starters pretty much played forty minutes.
- 38:35Speaker 3: But they look fresh, and you know, okay See looked okay,
- 38:38Speaker 3: But it is Denver looked like a team that had
- 38:42Speaker 3: been in that situation before in okay See did not.
- 38:45Speaker 3: And that's what scares me as a Wether fan going
- 38:46Speaker 3: forward in this series.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Well, and I think they'll read, they'll bounce back from that,
- 38:51Speaker 1: and I think they'll play really really well in Game
- 38:55Speaker 1: two on this And there there's something something I believe
- 39:01Speaker 1: to the whole rest versus rust thing I mean, I
- 39:04Speaker 1: saw it happen when my team in the baseball playoffs
- 39:06Speaker 1: a couple of years ago with the Dodgers and didn't
- 39:07Speaker 1: get up off the deck and the Diamondbacks took him out.
- 39:11Speaker 1: So there's something to that, I think. But but you know,
- 39:18Speaker 1: they built the fourteen point lead before it started to
- 39:20Speaker 1: slip away. Also, the Nuggets were able to overcome several
- 39:27Speaker 1: different things, not the least of which is the usually
- 39:32Speaker 1: uber selfish play of Russell Westbrook, since you know, the
- 39:36Speaker 1: former Oklahoma City thunder Man.
- 39:37Speaker 2: And it was interesting, wasn't.
- 39:39Speaker 1: It how they they gave him a robust round of
- 39:42Speaker 1: applause when he was out there, and then he was
- 39:44Speaker 1: on the free throw line they were cheering when he
- 39:45Speaker 1: missed as well, And it made me think about how
- 39:50Speaker 1: thunder fans had really just kind of dumped on Kevin
- 39:54Speaker 1: Duranmeny left and caught him cupcake and all this. This
- 39:56Speaker 1: is a guy who gave over a million dollars for
- 39:59Speaker 1: tornado relief victims there in More, Oklahoma, but they that
- 40:02Speaker 1: didn't matter to them at that point. And yet here
- 40:07Speaker 1: was the critical possession in Westbrook racing up the right
- 40:10Speaker 1: sideline and the thing that went in my mind is
- 40:12Speaker 1: he's going to try to take on two defenders and
- 40:14Speaker 1: put up a shot where he's going to stop and
- 40:17Speaker 1: go hero ball and launch a three that'll clang out. Instead,
- 40:20Speaker 1: he goes to Gordon, who nails the three. Now, if
- 40:22Speaker 1: he hadn't missed that, I think Folks was an eye
- 40:25Speaker 1: hero ball, he shouldn't have been shooting that three. And
- 40:28Speaker 1: I can't remember her name. The reporter asked him, you know,
- 40:30Speaker 1: why did you shoot the three on that? The answer
- 40:33Speaker 1: was it was the open shot. It was the right
- 40:35Speaker 1: shot to take for him, Now I did. I also
- 40:38Speaker 1: think it was funny cam that Shack asked him in
- 40:43Speaker 1: the ask Jamalt Murray in the post game if he
- 40:45Speaker 1: was going to be better than six for sixteen, and
- 40:50Speaker 1: he's like, yeah, I'll be better, but this is about
- 40:51Speaker 1: a team win, so I hear you, but it'll be
- 40:54Speaker 1: six for sixteen. And that was after they all had
- 40:56Speaker 1: a lot of fun at Ernie Johnson's expense, who had
- 40:58Speaker 1: that long winded statement but didn't ask a question, and
- 41:01Speaker 1: Murray just said, I'm not sure there was a question there,
- 41:05Speaker 1: but blah blah blah. Ernie owned it and said it
- 41:09Speaker 1: wasn't it wasn't I just went on and I fillibustered
- 41:11Speaker 1: and all that other kind of stuff. It's that cardinal
- 41:14Speaker 1: rule of interviewing CAM. Unless you're in a regular conversation
- 41:18Speaker 1: with somebody, you don't make a statement.
- 41:20Speaker 2: You ask a question.
- 41:22Speaker 1: And at least Jamal Murray was smart enough, I guess
- 41:27Speaker 1: to to and sharp enough to say, I'm not sure
- 41:30Speaker 1: there's a question there, but yeah we've been.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Blah blah blah blah blah. So that's that's journalism one
- 41:35Speaker 2: O one on display there. Cam. Don't make a statement,
- 41:38Speaker 2: ask a question, yeah, And that's always a tough spot.
- 41:41Speaker 3: And that's why, like if you ever have watched Late
- 41:44Speaker 3: Night with Scott Van Pelt, you know he always does
- 41:46Speaker 3: those postgame interviews and a lot of the times for
- 41:50Speaker 3: Van Pelt, you know, you don't know you're gonna be
- 41:52Speaker 3: interviewing until probably I don't know, sixty seconds before he
- 41:56Speaker 3: comes on the air, or maybe they have an idea
- 41:58Speaker 3: of who they're going to get, and you know, it's
- 41:59Speaker 3: always an awkward situation at times because you sometimes a
- 42:02Speaker 3: player can't hear you, or they don't want to be
- 42:04Speaker 3: doing the interview. And Van pel is such a pro
- 42:07Speaker 3: at it, it's it should be taught in journalism school
- 42:11Speaker 3: if if you want to be a broadcaster, or if
- 42:13Speaker 3: you even have to do anything with interviewing people at all,
- 42:17Speaker 3: or just speaking face to face. What famed Help does
- 42:20Speaker 3: on a nightly basis is what makes him such a
- 42:23Speaker 3: great sports anchor. And it's it's funny because we all think,
- 42:26Speaker 3: we know, we all know EJS want one of the
- 42:28Speaker 3: best ever to do it, and he's fantastic, especially his
- 42:31Speaker 3: ability to navigate Shaq and Chuck and Kenny because who
- 42:35Speaker 3: knows where they're going to go with anything they ever say.
- 42:39Speaker 2: But yeah, funny.
- 42:40Speaker 3: Moment, And it's it's why everyone is drawn to those
- 42:44Speaker 3: four guys.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Yep, and agree that the ability to make light of themselves,
- 42:51Speaker 1: I think. And sometimes you see that, you know when
- 42:52Speaker 1: the you know when when fans tweet out different things
- 42:57Speaker 1: like they did like on earning last night, showed mister
- 42:59Speaker 1: being their state by the side of the road.
- 43:01Speaker 2: That kind of deal.
- 43:02Speaker 1: You know, it's it makes sense, it makes absolute sense,
- 43:05Speaker 1: and and and and your spot on about that that uh,
- 43:09Speaker 1: you know, it can be a deal where it's it's
- 43:13Speaker 1: can be very very uncomfortable if you're if you're not
- 43:18Speaker 1: understanding what they're trying to pull off there.
- 43:21Speaker 2: So I get it. I you know, I understand it.
- 43:23Speaker 1: And again I have an appreciation for a guy like
- 43:26Speaker 1: Ernie Johnson to be able to poke fund at himself
- 43:29Speaker 1: for that, for making a statement instead of asking a question.
- 43:33Speaker 1: It makes makes a big different, all right. So, uh,
- 43:36Speaker 1: Oklahoma City is down one game to another. Hey, do
- 43:38Speaker 1: you put any stock into the you know me? You
- 43:42Speaker 1: know me, I put zero stock in superstition.
- 43:46Speaker 2: I don't. I don't buy in the superstition.
- 43:48Speaker 1: I got into it with my brother the other night,
- 43:50Speaker 1: who had given up on the Stars when they were
- 43:53Speaker 1: down to nothing in the third period, and we landed
- 43:57Speaker 1: on the charter and I got in the car, and
- 44:00Speaker 1: when I got in the car, they had already given
- 44:06Speaker 1: up that goal to start the third period, to fall
- 44:08Speaker 1: behind to nothing, and they had a brother who had
- 44:10Speaker 1: given up on him and he was ready to fire
- 44:12Speaker 1: Pete de Boor and all this other kind of stuff.
- 44:14Speaker 1: And they come back and win, and we're on a
- 44:16Speaker 1: group text with his son and.
- 44:20Speaker 2: One of our other brothers.
- 44:21Speaker 1: So there's four of us on this group text, and
- 44:24Speaker 1: I'm saying things like, h yeah, even though you gave
- 44:26Speaker 1: up on him, they came back and they won, and
- 44:29Speaker 1: his response was to say, well, the reason they turned
- 44:31Speaker 1: the game around was that, you know, I turned off
- 44:33Speaker 1: the game. I turned it on something else, you know.
- 44:35Speaker 1: And he's one of those superstitious dudes, and there are
- 44:37Speaker 1: people like that. So against that backdrop, I put this
- 44:40Speaker 1: question to you, Kim. Folks were asking if Oklahoma City's
- 44:46Speaker 1: weird uniform thing the dark the black jersey that just
- 44:50Speaker 1: said Oklahoma on it, and it kind of and they
- 44:53Speaker 1: were black T shirts. It was kind of a blackout
- 44:56Speaker 1: the other fans wearing it, and they said it just
- 44:59Speaker 1: kind of like dark can smokey. The arena kind of
- 45:02Speaker 1: looked like the bar I was in in Fayetteville the
- 45:04Speaker 1: other night with Keith and and uh and and and
- 45:07Speaker 1: how it just kind of put a real bad vibe
- 45:11Speaker 1: over the bell.
- 45:11Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 45:12Speaker 1: I didn't buy that. I would tell you this. You
- 45:15Speaker 1: know what that color scheme said to me, Love's Truck Stop.
- 45:19Speaker 1: That's their colors. They're black, yellow, and red and that's
- 45:22Speaker 1: and they had the little logo on there. So I
- 45:24Speaker 1: wasn't buying the superstition on that, were you.
- 45:26Speaker 3: No, I don't think the jerseys had anything to do
- 45:28Speaker 3: with Jokics completely dominating the Okay See in the fourth quarter.
- 45:31Speaker 3: I won't say this though, Craig, you know I do.
- 45:35Speaker 3: I've I always loved alternate uniforms. You know, whenever I
- 45:38Speaker 3: would play Madden or college football or FIFA, I would always,
- 45:42Speaker 3: you know, switch the team jersey to whatever alternate jersey
- 45:45Speaker 3: or throwback jersey they've had. We've gone too far, I
- 45:48Speaker 3: think once we reached the postseason, you stick to your
- 45:51Speaker 3: home and away jerseys.
- 45:53Speaker 2: In that set.
- 45:54Speaker 3: I when these teams, especially in the NBA, they go
- 45:57Speaker 3: to their city alternative connect Cares jersey and it's it's
- 46:01Speaker 3: it just looks weird. Especially I think it was it.
- 46:04Speaker 3: I remember the team in the first round series. It
- 46:07Speaker 3: might have been who the thunderplay in the first round.
- 46:10Speaker 3: I already forgot. It feels like Memphis Memphis. They I
- 46:14Speaker 3: think Game three, which was their first home game, they
- 46:18Speaker 3: went back to the throwback uniforms from the nineties two thousands,
- 46:23Speaker 3: their Vancouver Grizzlies era, and in Game four, I think
- 46:27Speaker 3: they were in their Memphis Hustle.
- 46:29Speaker 2: The ABA team there.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Well, or the it was Memphis Pros and it was
- 46:35Speaker 1: Memphis Tams. I mean they were they were gonna be
- 46:37Speaker 1: the hustle, and then the league folded, what.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Are we doing? Why why can't you just why don't
- 46:41Speaker 2: you just wear your home jerseys?
- 46:42Speaker 3: But you know, maybe it looks good and the kids
- 46:45Speaker 3: love it and stuff, but it's gone too far. It
- 46:48Speaker 3: should be home in a way, just two uniforms throughout
- 46:50Speaker 3: the entire playoffs. But hey, that's just me and I'll
- 46:53Speaker 3: get off my front porch yelling at the cloud I.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Started to saying as I head down to the dog
- 46:57Speaker 1: out now to visit with Jim Shlasnagel for this next
- 47:00Speaker 1: during this next segment, I'll shake my fist at the
- 47:02Speaker 1: clouds for you.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Thank you. There.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Camp will take a look at the other NBA playoff series.
- 47:05Speaker 1: I thought that Nicks beating the Celtics in overtime, and
- 47:09Speaker 1: then of course Golden State and Minnesota getting ready to
- 47:12Speaker 1: crank it up, and you got Indiana and Cleveland. He'll
- 47:14Speaker 1: take a look at that, and then we are going
- 47:17Speaker 1: to have the conversation with Jim Schlosnagle coming up early
- 47:20Speaker 1: next hour as well, but I'm going to get it
- 47:21Speaker 1: down and visit him and we'll continue on thirteen under
- 47:24Speaker 1: the zone.
- 47:25Speaker 3: Wanted to quickly talk a little golf and shout out
- 47:29Speaker 3: to Scottie Scheffler, who absolutely torched TPC Craig Ranch this
- 47:34Speaker 3: past weekend as he picked up his fourteenth career PGA
- 47:38Speaker 3: Tour victory last week, shooting thirty one under part. I
- 47:43Speaker 3: believe it tied his lowest score on the PGA Tour,
- 47:47Speaker 3: thirty one under par. We're kind of been waiting for
- 47:51Speaker 3: Sky the wake up, right. Remember he had the off
- 47:54Speaker 3: season injury making Ravioli, we got the shards of glass
- 47:59Speaker 3: in his room, missed the start of the season, missed
- 48:02Speaker 3: a couple of tournaments, including the trips in Hawaii and
- 48:05Speaker 3: out in the West Coast.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Swing came back and.
- 48:08Speaker 3: He's played alright, hadn't won yet. Got to Augusta, where
- 48:13Speaker 3: he was the defending champion. We were hoping that he
- 48:16Speaker 3: would end up going, you know, back to back, but
- 48:19Speaker 3: just did not have it. He played well eight under par,
- 48:23Speaker 3: finished fourth, but never really was in contention to win.
- 48:26Speaker 3: In fact, kind of busted in the top ten after
- 48:30Speaker 3: a really solid sixty nine on Sunday, But you know,
- 48:33Speaker 3: the ball striking wasn't there, the driving wasn't there, and
- 48:37Speaker 3: you know, you know it might have ended up waking
- 48:39Speaker 3: him up as he shot out with a sixty two
- 48:43Speaker 3: on Thursday's round TPC Craig Ranch and just did not
- 48:48Speaker 3: look back. The CJ Cup Byron Nelson, by the way,
- 48:51Speaker 3: actually where both Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Speed made their
- 48:54Speaker 3: PJ Tour debuts as amateur golfers, playing at the University
- 48:59Speaker 3: of ten Axis at Austin, but finished with minus thirty
- 49:03Speaker 3: one shot eight under on the final day, ended up
- 49:07Speaker 3: winning by eight shots. And it's the best Scotty has
- 49:10Speaker 3: looked all season.
- 49:11Speaker 2: Now.
- 49:11Speaker 3: You can argue that he wasn't the greatest field, not
- 49:14Speaker 3: the greatest course, but I think you feel really good
- 49:19Speaker 3: about Scotty's chances heading into quilhala Ware, the one hundredth
- 49:23Speaker 3: and seventh PGA Championship will be played in two weeks
- 49:27Speaker 3: as Scotty looks to pick up his first major that
- 49:31Speaker 3: isn't a master's green jacket. Feel pretty good about his
- 49:35Speaker 3: chances going into that tournament. Obviously, Roy McElroy, who has
- 49:40Speaker 3: won at Quilhalow. Usually it's the home stop for the
- 49:44Speaker 3: Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. Roy's has dominated
- 49:48Speaker 3: there in years past. Is the first time this is.
- 49:51Speaker 3: We're actually playing the PGA Championship at Quohala since twenty seventeen,
- 49:57Speaker 3: where Justin Thomas won, and hey, Justin Thomas a few
- 50:01Speaker 3: weeks ago at Harvard Town at the Hilton Head. So
- 50:05Speaker 3: a lot of golfers who have played well at the
- 50:07Speaker 3: pass in this tournament are playing pretty well coming into
- 50:10Speaker 3: form JT.
- 50:11Speaker 2: Scotty Roy is.
- 50:12Speaker 3: It should make for hopefully an entertaining tournament overall, as
- 50:17Speaker 3: far as the golf course goes. Not the biggest fan,
- 50:22Speaker 3: it's long, they grow the rough up pretty high. It
- 50:25Speaker 3: turns into kind of a bomb and gouge fest, similar
- 50:27Speaker 3: to what we saw last year at the PGA Championship
- 50:31Speaker 3: AFL Holland, which zenershoftly won by one shot over Bryson
- 50:34Speaker 3: the Shambo. But hey, Dunday's tournament, that was an entertaining
- 50:39Speaker 3: final round and hopefully that's what we'll get at the
- 50:42Speaker 3: PGA Championship this year. Four total Longhardons will be playing
- 50:46Speaker 3: in that tournament, outside of Scotty Scheffler Jordan Speith, who
- 50:50Speaker 3: of course just needs the PGA Championship to complete the
- 50:54Speaker 3: career Grand Slim. Hey, we saw Roy do it this
- 50:56Speaker 3: year winning that elusive green jacket and that he was
- 51:01Speaker 3: searching for to capture the career Grand Slam. Why not
- 51:04Speaker 3: Jordan Speed, Hey, he played well at Quo Hollow the
- 51:08Speaker 3: President's Cup a few years ago.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Not certainly his his course to sign him.
- 51:13Speaker 3: He played there in twenty seventeen after he had won
- 51:15Speaker 3: the Open Championship. I think he finished like T twenty second.
- 51:20Speaker 3: T twenty four doesn't really suit his game too much.
- 51:24Speaker 3: But remember he's coming off risk off season risk surgery,
- 51:28Speaker 3: of course, and has had a couple of top tens,
- 51:31Speaker 3: top twenties T fourteen at Augusta, I believe. And it
- 51:36Speaker 3: came in this week at the Byron Nelson, you know,
- 51:39Speaker 3: looking for something and ended up shooting a sixty two
- 51:43Speaker 3: also on Sunday, nine hunder got him into the top five,
- 51:47Speaker 3: where he finished fourth. That tied his career low for
- 51:51Speaker 3: a golf round. And is looking for something as well.
- 51:54Speaker 3: So maybe Jordan Speed finding some sort of game heading
- 51:56Speaker 3: into major championship season. He did say his post on
- 52:00Speaker 3: press conference because he played with Scotty Cheff with the
- 52:02Speaker 3: first two rounds and his quote was, yeah, seeing Scottie
- 52:07Speaker 3: beat my butt for the first two days of the tournament,
- 52:10Speaker 3: really makes me want to get better and play harder,
- 52:12Speaker 3: because hey, when you know, when they were both amateur
- 52:15Speaker 3: golfers on the younger circuits, it was Jordan's beef was
- 52:18Speaker 3: was dominating, and it was the Scotti's, the Jts, the
- 52:21Speaker 3: salad Toruses that were trying to catch up to him.
- 52:23Speaker 3: Now everybody, not just Jordan's pele, with everybody trying to
- 52:26Speaker 3: catch up to Scottie Scheffer who likely Scottie and Roy
- 52:31Speaker 3: probably gonna be the top two favorites heading into quote Hollow.
- 52:35Speaker 3: We'll see with Jordan, you know, I'm looking forward more
- 52:38Speaker 3: to possibly the Open Championship later this season. PJ at
- 52:43Speaker 3: QO Hollow, the US Open at Oakmont. It's definitely uphill
- 52:48Speaker 3: battle for him, but just hoping to get some more
- 52:51Speaker 3: consistency out of Jordan Sped. The other two golfers competing
- 52:54Speaker 3: the PGA Championship of former ut golfers Jonathan Vegas, who
- 52:58Speaker 3: continues to have a fantastic to golf career in Bo Hostler,
- 53:02Speaker 3: who had a really good twenty and twenty four season,
- 53:05Speaker 3: still looking for his first PGA Tour win of the year.
- 53:09Speaker 3: One notable golfer who will not be playing at the
- 53:12Speaker 3: one hundred and seventh PGA Championship is Billy Horschel, who
- 53:15Speaker 3: actually is undergoing preventative hip surgery and will miss most
- 53:20Speaker 3: of the season. Horsechell, who withdrew two weeks ago from
- 53:27Speaker 3: a PJ Tour event, cided on Twitter that it's an
- 53:30Speaker 3: unfortunate situation with so many great events up in the schedule,
- 53:33Speaker 3: but this is a preventative measure. I'm already looking forward
- 53:35Speaker 3: to getting the rehab started, getting back to practicing, and
- 53:38Speaker 3: hopefully returning to the golf course in late summer early fall. Horsefell,
- 53:42Speaker 3: by the way, who you know, was battling for the
- 53:45Speaker 3: Open Championship this past year before Sanders Schoffley pulled it
- 53:49Speaker 3: off to win his second major of the twenty twenty
- 53:51Speaker 3: four campaign. So not only does this take away you know,
- 53:57Speaker 3: Billy's ability to complete in major championships, see also hurts
- 54:01Speaker 3: his chances of making the Ryder Cup.
- 54:03Speaker 2: Of course, Billy Horschell, who you watched him play, He's
- 54:07Speaker 2: pretty emotional.
- 54:09Speaker 3: He's always got some sort of red, white and blue
- 54:11Speaker 3: on if he's not wearing Florida Gaylor color Florida Gator colors.
- 54:15Speaker 3: It's one of his big goals. Of course, has been
- 54:17Speaker 3: making the Ryder Cup team and with this surgery may
- 54:21Speaker 3: not happen. He's played on two President's Cups teams played
- 54:25Speaker 3: on in twenty twenty two. He's got two top tens
- 54:29Speaker 3: this season and came in actually this week sixteenth in
- 54:32Speaker 3: the US Ryder Cup points standings. But with this surgery,
- 54:37Speaker 3: who knows his chances? He might be on the outside
- 54:39Speaker 3: looking in. As the US team will host the Europeans
- 54:43Speaker 3: at Bethpage Black and trying to avenge the loss in
- 54:48Speaker 3: Rome two years ago, not just really a loss in
- 54:50Speaker 3: absolute drubbing to the Europeans. So no Billy Horschell going forward.
- 54:55Speaker 3: More to come here at hour two. Already here from
- 54:58Speaker 3: coach Jim Sloshnegos, Texas Baseball host Lamar University their final
- 55:02Speaker 3: midweek non conference scheme of the twenty twenty five season.
- 55:06Speaker 2: We'll be back wrap up hour two here on the
- 55:09Speaker 2: Craigway Show.
- 55:10Speaker 1: Third and final hour of the program here on thirteen
- 55:12Speaker 1: hundred the Zone coming away from UFCU Dish falk Field. Tonight,
- 55:16Speaker 1: Long Worn Baseball Is Texas takes on the Lamar Cardinals,
- 55:20Speaker 1: and you'll hear that one on one oh three point
- 55:22Speaker 1: one FM. Austin's eighty station six fifteen airtime and a
- 55:26Speaker 1: six point thirty first pitch. You can also connect to
- 55:30Speaker 1: it through the iHeartRadio app gets you right to the
- 55:34Speaker 1: streaming sources for that, and it's also available at Texas
- 55:38Speaker 1: long worns dot com and LHN dot com. In fack tonight,
- 55:43Speaker 1: Cam Parker for the last time this season, and it's
- 55:48Speaker 1: been a handful of times, not many, but a handful.
- 55:51Speaker 1: For the last time this season, he got you good
- 55:53Speaker 1: old fashioned simulcastwork.
- 55:54Speaker 2: In this evening.
- 55:55Speaker 1: Ooh all right, So, folks that are pull it up
- 56:00Speaker 1: on SEC Network Plus on your mobile devices, be it
- 56:05Speaker 1: your iPad or at home if you're watching, you know,
- 56:10Speaker 1: folks always hear me shout out Tom McKay and Audio
- 56:12Speaker 1: Visual Consultations. They're really good at doing that, helping you
- 56:15Speaker 1: set up all your streaming devices in through your home.
- 56:18Speaker 1: So if you're streaming the game, watching at home or
- 56:21Speaker 1: on an iPad or on your phone or whatever.
- 56:24Speaker 2: Laptop, whatever the situation.
- 56:26Speaker 1: May be, and you're pulling down SEC Network Plus, you'll
- 56:31Speaker 1: hear our broadcast tonight with Keith Morland joining me for
- 56:34Speaker 1: the call of that. It's the simulcast this evening so
- 56:37Speaker 1: if you're watching, I'm just telling you in advance. I'm
- 56:41Speaker 1: asking you to have some indulgence in advance. And I'll
- 56:43Speaker 1: say this on the air as well. If you're watching
- 56:46Speaker 1: the game and it sounds like I'm talking a little
- 56:51Speaker 1: more than I should be talking, I think a Dan
- 56:55Speaker 1: Christensen DJ C LAWNT and that spot what we did.
- 56:57Speaker 1: He goes, you know, Craig, you you're you're really good,
- 57:01Speaker 1: but you talk a lot, And I say, what's kind
- 57:03Speaker 1: of my job? Well, it'll be kind of my job tonight.
- 57:07Speaker 1: Even though it's a telecast, remember, first and foremost, it's
- 57:10Speaker 1: a radio broadcast being fed to the pictures, hence the
- 57:14Speaker 1: name simulcast because it's being broadcast both on radio and
- 57:20Speaker 1: the UH and the telecast of it. So just wanted
- 57:24Speaker 1: to give you the heads up on that. So if
- 57:25Speaker 1: you're watching me, gosh, can't the dude realize when he's
- 57:29Speaker 1: on TV and don't call it like a radio broadcast, No,
- 57:32Speaker 1: because it is a radio broadcast.
- 57:34Speaker 2: TV's just picking it up. So hopefully that's ago most.
- 57:37Speaker 1: Of the people say they like it that way, Kim,
- 57:39Speaker 1: because they can get a good understanding about it, whether
- 57:42Speaker 1: I'm saying something or whether Keith Morland saying something that
- 57:45Speaker 1: they get a good understanding of it. We have we
- 57:48Speaker 1: have several fans that we know, uh some we've become
- 57:52Speaker 1: friends with over over time as well that like to
- 57:54Speaker 1: take their headset radios to the ballpark and listen to
- 57:57Speaker 1: our ballpark frequency, which is eighty seven point seven FM
- 58:01Speaker 1: here inside of the ballpark and then at DKR Texas
- 58:06Speaker 1: Memorial Stadium. I think it's eighty nine to nine inside
- 58:10Speaker 1: the stadium.
- 58:10Speaker 2: I think so.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Folks say they get a better understanding of some of
- 58:15Speaker 1: the things, especially if you've got questions about ruling or
- 58:20Speaker 1: rules or something, or just an explanation that maybe you
- 58:25Speaker 1: might not otherwise get from a telecast, or if you're
- 58:29Speaker 1: just sitting in.
- 58:29Speaker 2: The stands watching.
- 58:30Speaker 1: So we're all in it, and it's all in the
- 58:34Speaker 1: interest of making for a better broadcast all the way around.
- 58:37Speaker 1: So hopefully, like I say, if you're watching tonight, understand it.
- 58:40Speaker 1: If you're listening to Keith Morland and me, and if
- 58:42Speaker 1: you're watching the telecast night, you will be because it's
- 58:44Speaker 1: a simulcast, it'll be broadcast on radio and television, that
- 58:48Speaker 1: it's the radio broadcast that we're doing. That they're feeding
- 58:51Speaker 1: to the pictures. There's not a separate TV announced team.
- 58:55Speaker 1: That's been the case. Not not a lot this season,
- 58:57Speaker 1: but some and it's happened. And also with women's basketball.
- 59:02Speaker 1: I think we had it on one men's basketball game.
- 59:04Speaker 2: I know.
- 59:05Speaker 1: Also what is it uh cam for the bowl games?
- 59:09Speaker 1: They had it for the Peach Bowl and again for
- 59:11Speaker 1: the Cotton Bowl where they have was that they call
- 59:14Speaker 1: it the hometown radio broadcast on one of the what
- 59:16Speaker 1: on one of the ESPN channels where they carry our
- 59:18Speaker 1: network broadcast.
- 59:19Speaker 3: Yeah, usually like it's either on ESPN U or now
- 59:23Speaker 3: it's probably just all the ESPN Plus because you know
- 59:25Speaker 3: they did it for Texas, Ohio State where you had
- 59:28Speaker 3: that you and Roger and then they had Big Data
- 59:31Speaker 3: on the other one.
- 59:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Big Daddy was yeah, for the Ohio State
- 59:35Speaker 1: for the Cotton Bowl.
- 59:36Speaker 2: Yeah, he had had that one.
- 59:37Speaker 1: And then of course we also had it for the
- 59:39Speaker 1: Peach Bowl as well with my good friend Tim Heaey,
- 59:43Speaker 1: the voice of the Arizona State Sun Devils. They had
- 59:45Speaker 1: his call and his crew on one channel, him and
- 59:49Speaker 1: Jeff Van Raphorst UH and on on UH one one
- 59:55Speaker 1: of their networks, be it the ESPN News or ESPN
- 59:57Speaker 1: Plus or ESPN U or whatever.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: And then and then.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Our broadcast with Roger and UH also with Will Matthews
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: on one of their channels as well. This one isn't
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: quite as the tailed as that because it's just me
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: and Keith call it talking to baseball here, but UH
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: that that'll be the case tonight, final non conference game
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: of the season, and they're glad to get this ball
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: game in and and and you'll hear Jim Sloss Nekle
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: talk about that because you know, some folks feel that,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: you know, late in the season, late in the season,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: if you've got a Tuesday night non conference game, a
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: lot of coaches, especially coaches of UH winning teams, contending teams,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: they'd almost just assume not play the game because maybe
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: it might hurt their RPI or maybe it won't do
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: them much good. And if you lose the game, then that's,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: you know whatever, and then there's always the question of injury.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: That's not the case with this particular team, with this
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: particular coaching staff. Schloss has has said that, you know,
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: he wants them to play and to get better. And
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: you'll hear him talk about this that they after what
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: happened over the weekend in the series against Arkansas, they're
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: pretty eager to get back on the field and to
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: kind of, you know, turn things around and make things
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: better coming off of that series loss and being swept
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: by the Arkansas Razorbacks. So they're they're pretty anxious to
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: try to do that, to get back to get back
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: at it.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: And we'll see as they go to it. Now, Like I.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: Said, the lineup may be a bit altered this evening.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: He hasn't.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: He had not made out the lineup when we were visiting,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: but he's considering. And some of that will also depend
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: on a couple of the guys who are battling a
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: flu bug that's been going on. And normally I hear
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: about that, you know, during like the dead of winter,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: like in January February, we hear a basketball coach say, yeah,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: their team is fighting through a flu bug. I know
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: that the Big Shaffer's team went through that, I want
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: to say early February or something.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: They had one of those deals.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: So with that in mind, you know that that could
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: affect the lineup on the field to night.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: We'll find out on our text line.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Somebody reminded me, as did Cam, that that Star Series
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: does not open until tomorrow.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Night, and I'm an impatient waiting for that thing to start.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Ever since they won Saturday night and then Winnipeg one
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Sunday night, I was thinking, you know that it was
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: beginning to.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: Night, but it doesn't.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: It does not start until tomorrow, so you know that
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: that'll be the case. In the East, the team I
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: root for, the Carolina Hurricanes, begins their Eastern Conference semifinal series,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: and it's gonna be difficult. They're going to be having
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: a deal with the greatest of the great Alex Ovechkin,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: the all time goal scoring leader passed winning Gretzky this year,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: and the Washington Capitals, so that they'll be playing. The
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: other Eastern semifinal series got under last night, the Toronto
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Maple Leafs getting to win. Do you know Cam the
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: last time the Toronto Maple Leafs were in a Stanley
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: Cup final? Ooh, I'll help you out with some me
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: It predates your bird.
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: I was gonna say, like seventies, eighties. I don't know
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: my hockey history, but I know it's been quite some time.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: Put it this.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: Way, it predates anybody born after nineteen sixty eight. Okay,
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: the Toronto Maple Leafs have not been in a Stanley
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Cup Final, let alone won one, but it happened both
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: the same year nineteen sixty seven, the Maple Leafs got
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: in it and that was the last.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: But here this will really set it for you.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: The last time the Toronto Maple Leafs were in the
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: Stanley Cup Final. Now they've got to win this series
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: the one seed there in the East. They've got to
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: win this series over over Florida, the defending Cup champions.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: So they have to win this series, and then they
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: have to win the Eastern Conference finals against the winner
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: of the Carolina Washington series, which I would think you
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: have to give the edge to Washington on that. But
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: they'd have to win those two series just to reach
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup Final and play the winner of the
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: Western Conference, which would either be Winnipeg the one seed,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: Dallas the four seed, and then the other one is
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: what Vegas and Edmonton, right, that's the other that's the
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: other conference semifinal series. So Toronto would have to win
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: this series in the next series to reach the fine.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: But the last time the Toronto Maple Leafs reached a
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Stanley Cup Final was when the NHL had six teams,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: the original six.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: That was it. Wow, you know, can you name the
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: original six NHL franchise?
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: No, there's no chance you're a hockey fan in.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: That sentence right now? Okay, all right?
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: The original six of Toronto, Montreal, the New York Rangers,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Red Wings, and Chicago Blackhawks. That's
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: the original six. I probably could have gotten those, That's
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: what I would have thought.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: So the next season in Toronto won the Cup in
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: nineteen sixty seven, and it was a surprise. They were
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: kind of an underdog in those days. The top four
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: made the playoffs.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: That was it. You had semifinals and finals. That was it.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: And Toronto was won the Stanley Cup nineteen sixty seven.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: It's the last time that they won a Stanley Cup.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: Last time they were in the Cup final. The next year,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: sixty seven sixty eight, the NHL doubled in size. That's
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: that's unprecedented in sports history that a league actually doubles
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: in size. Well, and then when you take a closer
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: look at it, they went from six to twelve teams.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: So and they.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Added can you name any of the six teams they
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: added in the original expansion. Some of them were stars
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: that back then the Minnesota North Starsky so you later
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: moved to Dallas, So that's one yepy. Some were pretty
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: household names in Saint Louis, the Blues, Saint Louis Blues.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: That's two. Okay.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Was there a Buffalo team. There was, but they did.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: They were not in that expansion. The Savers didn't come
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: in until nineteen seventy with the Vancouver Canucks.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: They both came in nineteen third, so okay, Blues and
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: was Winnipeg's first team.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: No, they were in that the rival league, the WHA
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: for a while, the Jets, along with what was the
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: New England Whalers which became the Hertford Whalers and we
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: now know them as the Carolina Hurricanes, they were in
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: that group. The Edmonton Oilers were in that group. The
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: Calgary Flames actually Calgary moved from Atlanta, which.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: Was an expansion team in seventy two.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: They tried mansion in the NHL twice in Atlanta and
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: it didn't work either time, both with the Flames in
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: the early seventies who moved to Cavriy and they've been
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: there ever since. And then the what were they the
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: Thrashers who became the replacement franchise for Winnipeg, whose franchise
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: had moved to Phoenix, who's now in Utah as Utah
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: Hockey Club.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Okay, all right, So.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Any of the other teams you might have about Philadelphia
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: or pis both. So that's four. So there's two more.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: There's there's two more.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: One is the team.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: One is a team that's currently where it is that year.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: The other is the team that's changed addresses twice. In fact,
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: that team, i'll give you a hint, is now the
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: new Jersey Devils. But they weren't back then. In fact,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: they weren't even on the East coast.
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: Okay, I was going to say either the Devils or Islanders,
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: weren't one of those two.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Islanders came in seventy two with Atlanta. So the Devils
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: in their original incarnation were known as the Oakland Seals.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: And then they became known as the California Golden Seal.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: They then moved to I believe the Kansas City and
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: became the Scouts for a year or two, and then
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: moved to Jersey, or they were the one that moved
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: to Colorado the original Colorado franchise, which was known in
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: the early seventies as the Colorado Rockies, but it didn't last,
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: and so it was different than the Avalanche. The Avalanche
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: came from another one of those rival league franchises, the
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Quebec Nordiaks, out of the WHA, and they moved to
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: Denver after the ninety five season, and they won the
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Stanley Cup in their first year as the Colorado Avalanche.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: But anyway, those were the six teams. When they doubled
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: in size in sixty seven sixty eight, they added Buffalo, Vancouver.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: In seventy they added the Islanders, and like I said,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: the Atlanta Flames, who would later moved to Calgary in
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: seventy two. So anyway, that there's a little bit of
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: your hockey history, lesson for it. But the point of
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: all this is to say, the last time Toronto was
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: even in or let alone win, and both happened the
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Stanley Cup finals was nineteen sixty seven. It's been a
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: long time and a lot of really bad hockey played
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: over the years in Toronto. But of course they have
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: I think the best player in all the NHL in
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Austin Matthews. Certainly the best, the best scorer in the NHL.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: And uh and and they're a good club this year,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: they're gonna be. They're gonna be, They're gonna be hard
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: to beat. I'd love to see the Stars play them
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: if if Carolina doesn't get to the finals, and I
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: don't think they will, I don't even think they'll get
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: past Washington, let alone beat Toronto in the Eastern Conference finals.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: So uh, I think Toronto may wind up there, and
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: if they do, it'd be great to see the Stars
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: take them on.
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: That'd be a lot of fun.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: All right, up next, Uh, the conversation had just a
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: few minutes ago with Jim Schlostnegle, the head coach here.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Somebody said that, by the way, uh, just so you know,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: I listen when I watch when and when in the
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: park because I like to hear you talk whatever it is.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: Thanks Carrie, I appreciate that.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: And somebody else said, you do a great job interviewing
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: all the UT coaches.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: Well done. Appreciate the good content you do for his band.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: Thank you kind words.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: So appreciate that You're going to hear a conversation coming
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: up with Jim Slostangle. That's next. When we continue on
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone on a textan Tuesday. That was
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: that was the King George Strait Which which number? Which
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: number one? Did you cull for that particular return cut?
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: What? Right or wrong? Okay? All right?
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: And now when I was downstairs visiting with Jim Schlostangle,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: is that when you bump back with Willie Nelson?
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Yes, okay, I want to make sure we did Whiskey River, Okay, good.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: I wanted to make sure we didn't short change the
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: great Willy Nelson, who turned ninety two last week, ninety two,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: and he's still performing. He's doing his Fourth of July
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: picnic out of Cota, isn't he. I think Bob Dylan's
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: going to be in it?
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: Okay?
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: All that.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: If if I wasn't going to be on the North
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: Carolina coast on the fourth of July, I can tell
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: you that's where I would be.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: I would I would be wanting to.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: Hear Willie because who knows how many more opportunities we'll
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: have to see Willie Nelson. That which, by the way,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: goes into saying that in September, when I hit a
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: certain milestone birthday, lind and I are going to celebrate
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: it on the open date weekend for football by going
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: to Las Vegas to see Ringo Star.
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: Because we wanted to haven't and and.
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: And Ringo will be finishing up his his residency at
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: the Venetian, which is where we saw Steelee Dan a
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: few years ago and where Keith Morland went back in
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: February with his wife during when Texas was in Las
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Vegas playing baseball, they went to see Chicago play. There's
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: a great menu for that as well. Tomorrow, by the way,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: on the program, now tomorrow when when we come on,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: it's gonna be after there's an early Express game. Correct, Yes,
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: they play at noon, so so we'll be gone after
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: that and take it to five. But in the time
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: we have tomorrow, with some of the some of the
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: return cuts we have, we we won't exactly be doing
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: yacht rock. We're we're we're gonna zero in on one
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: specific artist tomorrow, who's some of this artist work can
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: be put into the category of yacht rock, but this
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: artist doesn't necessarily qualify, uh, you know, on on own
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: merit as a yacht rocker. It's a different it's a
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: it's a it's a little bit different era. Although some
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: of the offerings can fall into the yacht rock category,
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: and I'll just leave it at that, and there's I
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: have a very specific reason for doing this tomorrow, So
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: that'll be on tomorrow's program, and then on Thursday's program.
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: We'll be on at the.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: Start of the program for nearly the same amount of
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: time as we will be on Wednesday, but from the
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: front up until three forty five. And we have long
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: worn softball. Texas will be in the SEC tournament as
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: the number three seed, and we know now that they
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: will be playing the winner of the matchup between the
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: sixth seed Florida and the eleven seed Ole Miss. Ole
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Miss scored a run in the bottom of the first
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: to make it one nothing. That was the final score,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: one to nothing, as Ole Miss eliminated the fourteen seed Missouri.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: So Ole Miss will play Florida tomorrow and the winner
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: of that matchup will play Texas on Thursday. The other game,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: by the way, today the twelve seed Georgia run ruled
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: the thirteen seed Kentucky ate nothing to advance. Tonight, the
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: ten seed Alabama plays the fifteen seed Auburn. So that's
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: where that is. But in terms of the actual tournament
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: for Texas. Then the Longhorns will be taking on the
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: winner of the match up tomorrow, and that matchup tomorrow
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: will be at four o'clock in the afternoon, same time
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: that the Longhorns will play schedule to play on Thursday.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: The sixth seed Florida the eleven seed Old miss The
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: Auburn Alabama winner tonight will play the seven seed South
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Carolina tomorrow evening at seven. Georgia of the twelve seed
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: advance by beating the thirteen seed Kentucky eight nothing, so
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: they will play Arkansas the five seed, and it'll get
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: started tomorrow with the eight to nine match up Mississippi
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: State in LSU tomorrow. So Oklahoma is the one, Texas
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: A and M is the two seed, Texas is the three,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: Tennessee is the four. For those of you wondering, Texas
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: could see Texas A and M in the semifinals if
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: they advance, and they could well see Oklahoma in the
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: championship of the SEC Softball Tournament if they advance there.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: The SEC Baseball Tournament isn't for another two well two
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: weeks from the day actually. It begins at Hoover Metropolitan
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: Stadium in Hoover, Alabama, that's on the south side of Birmingham,
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: and Texas is trying to lock down the double by
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: finishing in the top four.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: In fact, they're trying to lock.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: Down being the number one seed in the tournament and
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: the number one overall seed for the NCAA Tournament, which
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: begins the following week. But first things first, they have
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: two more series in SEC play. They play this weekend
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Friday night here at UFCU dish Fowk Field against the
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Florida Gators, and that contest on Friday will be at
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: six thirty, and then a Saturday game at one o'clock
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: and a Sunday game at one o'clock, and then they
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: have no midweek game next week. They play at Oklahoma Thursday, Friday,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: and Saturday. Six thirty, six thirty, and two o'clock are
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: the three start times for that. So tonight's game against
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: Lamars we mentioned is the final non conference game of
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: the regular season against that backdrop. Let's hear the thoughts
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: that this was just a few moments ago. I was
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: down in the Texas dugout visiting with the head coach,
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: Jim slas Nagle. As long worn fans get to know
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: you and your coaching staff even more during the course
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: of the season. I'm sure they'd be kind of curious
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: to get your philosophy on because you haven't had this
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: situation like this where you come off the disappointment of
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: what happened in faevl over of the weekend. Do you
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: and your guys as well as your players. Are you
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: as anxious to get back on the field right away
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: or you're more into the.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: Evalue that we look at it and then go back
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: at Where where do you stand with that?
- 1:17:08Speaker 5: Oh, you want to get back on the field, for sure,
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: you want to you want to play. Uh, you know,
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: I think it varies from time to time, team to team.
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: You could have a you could have a team where
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: you're looking for rest.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: Sometimes I've just depends on how banged up you are,
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: that kind of thing.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: We've had the flu running through our team a little
- 1:17:24Speaker 5: bit in the last week, so that affects some things.
- 1:17:27Speaker 5: But at the end of the day, getting back on
- 1:17:29Speaker 5: the field and hopefully getting a better taste in your mouth.
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: Even though we're playing and we're playing an awesome team
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: tonight thirty seven wins, and we know how tough they
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: always play during the midweek games and what they're going
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: to roll out their pitchingise. So it's good for us.
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: You need to play and it's such a pretty day
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: an any any game in dishwalks a good day.
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: Yeah, especially after this morning it looked like we need
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: an art to get to the ballpark, but now it's now,
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: it's good.
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: With regard to the conversations that.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: You and Max have with your guys, mean, like you
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: said repeated throughout the weekend, you can't have the type
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: of free passes that happened the course of the weekend.
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: What's what's the message of the.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: Guys about how you avoid that and be able to
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: get them back on the being the way they've been doing.
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I think I think we just remind them of
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: who we are and what we stand for. And I
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: mean we haven't. We have We've hit some We've hit
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: a fair amount of guys this year. Obviously that's a
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: whole different conversation. I think it's player to player. Uh,
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: but we haven't really, we haven't walked a ton of guys.
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: We're not gonna as great of a strike throwing team
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: as I would like for us to be. But I
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: think Max, you know, I had a conversation with the
- 1:18:36Speaker 5: team in general, uh yesterday about getting back to your
- 1:18:40Speaker 5: I mean, that's why you have core values. That's why
- 1:18:42Speaker 5: you have an anchor. That's why you have an identity.
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: Is you when things, when you know what hits the fan,
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: you have something to go to. And so, uh, two
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: of our core values are toughness and excellence. And toughness,
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: we need to show some toughness. I didn't think we
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: were the toughest team on the field. I think we
- 1:18:56Speaker 5: thought we got punched in the mouth on the first game,
- 1:18:59Speaker 5: and we didn't respet on very well, especially in the mound.
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: Guys were hesitant to throw the ball in.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: The strike zone.
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: And and then, from an excellence means the best version
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: of yourself, and we certainly weren't the best version of
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: ourselves on the mound. I thought we played solid defense,
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: had the one miscommunication on the pop up on the
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: fly ball on the right field, but we were just
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: completely out of character. And that's you know, I guess
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: that that can happen in a season. It's way more
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: about how you respond to it. So and then Max,
- 1:19:26Speaker 5: I think had some reminding conversations with the pictures about
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: for example, when we throw, you know, the ball in
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: the strike zone, just in the strike zone, and they
- 1:19:36Speaker 5: put it in play, what is the batting average? It's
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: actually under one hundred. When we throw the ball to
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: the middle of the strike zone, middle middle of the
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: strike zone, what is the batting average, Well, it's a
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: little bit over one hundred. Right, So we all remember
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: the ones that get hammered. But just reminding them about
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: when you throw the ball in the strike zone, you're
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: gonna win more often than not.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: All and all you.
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: Get a look at is a guy like being you know,
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: and you know he just throws strikes. You know, there's
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: no super elite pitch, but especially in these Tuesday games,
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: depending on who you're playing, depending on the conditions, strikes win.
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: And we're you know, most teams are trying to try
- 1:20:13Speaker 5: out pitchers and you're trying to figure out hoping this
- 1:20:15Speaker 5: guy does this, or this young pitcher catches fire, and
- 1:20:18Speaker 5: you know, like it Drew Rerick or Flores earlier in
- 1:20:20Speaker 5: the year. And now you know we're at the point.
- 1:20:22Speaker 5: I mean, Cody, when Cody Howard gets in the game tonight,
- 1:20:24Speaker 5: he should be pitching with a lot of confidence. He's
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: been pitching awesome, ye, I mean really good and so
- 1:20:29Speaker 5: and we're gonna need guys like that if we're gonna
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: advance in a postseason. So yeah, there were some real
- 1:20:34Speaker 5: heartfelt conversations yesterday, but at the end of the day,
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: you got to go prove it on a baseball field,
- 1:20:37Speaker 5: and that's what the game gives you tonight.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: And so they have that opportunity this evening, Texas against
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: Lamar six fifteen airtime, six point thirty first pitch. Kate
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: Being will start for the log Warns this evening, and
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: he is obviously developed into that fourth starter for Texas.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: So Being will start for the log Warns this evening,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: you know, on a two nine to one ERA, and
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: Lamar will go with a right hander in Carter Sutton,
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: who is a senior right hander. Actually began his collegiate
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: career at Winthrop and then transferred in. He's five and
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: two and a four six eight er. All right, We've
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: got some more NBA and some college football notes to
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: get to when we continue here.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: I'm thirteen under the zone
