- 2:30Speaker 3: let's welcome and our good friend Angie Gillenwater from the
- 2:32Speaker 3: Kenaal Charleston New Main Association with this week's Adopt Me
- 2:35Speaker 3: Please pet of the Week and g a good morning
- 2:39Speaker 3: to you, a happy West Virginia Day.
- 2:41Speaker 6: Good morning and happy West Virginia Day. We're excited for
- 2:44Speaker 6: it here at the shelter.
- 2:45Speaker 3: What you guys do anything special for West Virginia Day
- 2:47Speaker 3: up at the shelter we are.
- 2:49Speaker 6: Indeed, so everybody in the building is just twenty dollars
- 2:52Speaker 6: to adopt all weekend.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Everybody in the building.
- 2:56Speaker 6: Well yeah, animals, oh animals.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Okay, gonna say because I think I think what you
- 3:01Speaker 3: just described was a vice crime there, so I just
- 3:04Speaker 3: want to make sure that it's the animals or twenty bucks.
- 3:06Speaker 3: So you're doing that for West Virginia Day, I think,
- 3:08Speaker 3: I think that's really cool. As always our adopt me.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Please put the week's picture posted over on Dave Island
- 3:14Speaker 3: Radio on Facebook and at Dave A seventy on x
- 3:18Speaker 3: We got a speaking of West Virginia Day. You told
- 3:21Speaker 3: me last night in conjunction with that, you got a
- 3:25Speaker 3: great West Virginia brown dog today by the name of
- 3:28Speaker 3: Lavender Brown. Tell us about Lavender Brown.
- 3:31Speaker 6: So, Lavender Brown actually caught my eye at the shelter
- 3:35Speaker 6: because when she goes out to play in the morning,
- 3:38Speaker 6: she sits on a trampoline. She does no playing, she's
- 3:40Speaker 6: sun bathes, and she simply waits to go back inside.
- 3:43Speaker 3: That's sounds that sounds like my spirit animal. No plenty
- 3:47Speaker 3: right there, correct.
- 3:48Speaker 6: I literally like I just love her. She's what you
- 3:52Speaker 6: see is what you get with Lavender. She gets along
- 3:55Speaker 6: great with all other dogs and every person she's ever met. Cats.
- 3:59Speaker 6: I'm sure would be fine if you take it slow,
- 4:01Speaker 6: but she just literally could not give a hoot.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Love it. I love I love this dog already. And
- 4:08Speaker 3: how old approximately?
- 4:11Speaker 6: So she's probably anywhere between like nine ten months old
- 4:14Speaker 6: to a year and a half. She's print still pretty young,
- 4:18Speaker 6: but she's not quite a senior yet, right.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Right, And so I mean we call her a West
- 4:23Speaker 3: Virginia brown dog, but are there other other characteristics, maybe
- 4:26Speaker 3: other breeds in there or what or do we know?
- 4:30Speaker 6: So the crew that she came in with, she actually
- 4:32Speaker 6: came in with a group of nine I think from
- 4:36Speaker 6: the South Charleston area, and they all had like a
- 4:39Speaker 6: hound look about them. There were some that were black
- 4:41Speaker 6: and white with floppy ears. There were some that were
- 4:45Speaker 6: brown with really long floppy ears. So I would say
- 4:47Speaker 6: there's probably hound in her family tree somewhere. But she
- 4:52Speaker 6: is a textbook definition of a wife. You love brown dog.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I love her, I love her and is so she
- 4:57Speaker 3: already ready to go out the door as far as
- 4:59Speaker 3: the shots and the vaxed and the whole thing, and
- 5:02Speaker 3: then then the Spade.
- 5:04Speaker 6: So she's up to date on her vaccine. She hasn't
- 5:06Speaker 6: been Spade yet, but once she's adopted, she will be
- 5:09Speaker 6: Spade if you want. She's a great candidate for a
- 5:12Speaker 6: doggy day out program. So you could check her out
- 5:15Speaker 6: for the day while you're waiting on her to be said,
- 5:18Speaker 6: if you do choose to adopt her, even if you
- 5:21Speaker 6: don't choose to adopt her, you can come and borrow
- 5:23Speaker 6: her from the shelter for a little bit, hang out
- 5:25Speaker 6: with her, and bring her back when you're done.
- 5:26Speaker 3: I mean, she's a from what you told me about
- 5:29Speaker 3: her disposition, Angie, I think that she would be great
- 5:31Speaker 3: if you wanted to pick her up tacker, you know,
- 5:34Speaker 3: on the boulevard for a walk, check her to a
- 5:36Speaker 3: dog park one of the other parks in the area.
- 5:38Speaker 3: It sounds like that she'd be an ideal dog for
- 5:39Speaker 3: that because she if you got other dogs, she gets
- 5:42Speaker 3: along with other dogs. And you said, you don't know
- 5:44Speaker 3: about cats, but you don't think cats would probably more
- 5:47Speaker 3: likely be a problem. And she said she loves kids too.
- 5:50Speaker 6: Yep, she loves everybody. What we consider like a golden
- 5:54Speaker 6: ticket dog. And she also seems like the type if
- 5:58Speaker 6: you wanted to take her, like maybe downcow apple streak
- 6:00Speaker 6: and an ice cream at Ellen's. I think she would
- 6:02Speaker 6: sit there right beside you and bask in the.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Sunlight well and probably lapping your ice cream too. But
- 6:07Speaker 3: that's okay, Yeah, that's all right.
- 6:08Speaker 7: Sure.
- 6:09Speaker 3: The Dave Allen showing five any Live brought to you
- 6:10Speaker 3: part by Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Let's talk about kittens for a moment.
- 6:15Speaker 6: You got a lot, Oh, we have so many kittens
- 6:20Speaker 6: to what.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Do you attribute that to? Did you have a lot
- 6:22Speaker 3: of people bringing them in or what?
- 6:24Speaker 5: Uh?
- 6:25Speaker 6: So, it's what we call kitten season where cats are
- 6:28Speaker 6: just repopulating a lot in the summertime months. We've had
- 6:33Speaker 6: a lot of kittens come in sick or injured, and
- 6:35Speaker 6: obviously we're not going to turn the most vulnerable ones
- 6:38Speaker 6: that need us away. So we've just taken in a
- 6:41Speaker 6: lot of sick, vulnerable kittens that you know, maybe they
- 6:44Speaker 6: didn't have a mom, or maybe they do have a
- 6:46Speaker 6: mom and they just need some antibiotics, you know, X
- 6:49Speaker 6: y Z. But the other day somebody actually dropped a
- 6:53Speaker 6: crate of seventeen kittens by our dumpster, so that shot
- 6:57Speaker 6: our numbers way high. Yeah, and all of those kittens
- 7:01Speaker 6: were very sick. We're happy to help them, right, and
- 7:04Speaker 6: we're glad it was during business hours so that way,
- 7:07Speaker 6: I was actually the one that stumbled upon them, so
- 7:09Speaker 6: we're glad that we found them and they didn't have
- 7:11Speaker 6: to sit in the elements for you know, an extended
- 7:13Speaker 6: period of time. But yeah, that definitely shot our numbers
- 7:17Speaker 6: up as well.
- 7:18Speaker 3: And uh yeah, and you and I was looking at
- 7:19Speaker 3: the pictures last night on your Facebook page. You got
- 7:23Speaker 3: a lot of beautiful, beautiful kittens out there, So if
- 7:26Speaker 3: you're in the market for a kitten, this would be
- 7:28Speaker 3: a great time. And I mean all callers, all breeds,
- 7:30Speaker 3: you got them all up there, Angie.
- 7:32Speaker 6: Yes, we have so many to choose from, and we
- 7:34Speaker 6: actually we're so full. We have cats at all of
- 7:37Speaker 6: our off site locations, which would be the south Ridge
- 7:40Speaker 6: Pet Coast saying all that's pet Supplies plus and cuts
- 7:43Speaker 6: and Cats Cafe downtown. So if you can't get to
- 7:46Speaker 6: the shelter somewhere, you can still adopt one of our cats.
- 7:49Speaker 3: You got anything you guys out and about anywhere this
- 7:52Speaker 3: weekend or anything.
- 7:54Speaker 6: We're actually gonna head to tays Valley Pet co tomorrow
- 7:56Speaker 6: between twelve and you know, three or four ish and
- 7:59Speaker 6: do an adoption event. So if you're in the tays
- 8:01Speaker 6: Valley area, say hi to us.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Are you going to be there tomorrow? Will you be
- 8:05Speaker 3: over there?
- 8:06Speaker 6: Oh, I will certainly be there.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Well, I'll tell you that's my neighborhood. So what's the
- 8:10Speaker 3: what's the what's the hours again?
- 8:13Speaker 6: Twelve to like three or four?
- 8:15Speaker 3: All right, well, expect an appearance by me tomorrow. I'll
- 8:18Speaker 3: be there.
- 8:19Speaker 6: It sounds a great I'll.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Stop by all right. What about the overall numbers at
- 8:23Speaker 3: the shelter still at critical capacity?
- 8:26Speaker 6: Yep, like I said, and no matter what we do,
- 8:28Speaker 6: we can't get under five hundred animals in our care.
- 8:31Speaker 6: So we're still trying our best. But right now I
- 8:35Speaker 6: think our most critical area is our cast and our
- 8:37Speaker 6: adult dogs.
- 8:39Speaker 3: And even got a hamster, right.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Yes, he actually got adopted. Okay, but we did have
- 8:46Speaker 6: a hamster. He actually got adopted the same day he
- 8:48Speaker 6: came in.
- 8:49Speaker 3: So, okay, do you get a lot of I mean,
- 8:51Speaker 3: because I know in the past we've talked about different animals. Yeah,
- 8:54Speaker 3: you had a pigs and so on and so forth.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Do you get a lot of non traditional animals, non dog,
- 9:00Speaker 3: non cats?
- 9:02Speaker 6: So we do get a lot of calls asking if
- 9:04Speaker 6: we can help with those animals. We try to point
- 9:06Speaker 6: them in different directions just because our shelter isn't quite
- 9:09Speaker 6: set up to meet all the means of different critters,
- 9:13Speaker 6: as I say, so to provide them with the best care.
- 9:17Speaker 6: We try to, you know, send those guys elsewhere for help,
- 9:21Speaker 6: but if we absolutely have to, we will take them
- 9:24Speaker 6: in and you know, network with our rescue partners to
- 9:27Speaker 6: get them to like the utmost care. So little Peanut
- 9:31Speaker 6: is one that you know, we had no other choice.
- 9:33Speaker 3: But today, yeah, well I'm glad he got adopted. I'm
- 9:37Speaker 3: glad he got adopted. We had a text to the
- 9:39Speaker 3: show here before we let you go, and this is
- 9:41Speaker 3: a very good point. I was going to bring this
- 9:42Speaker 3: up with you anyway, Angie, that says, with the devastating
- 9:44Speaker 3: temperatures coming, please don't forget about your pets paws on
- 9:48Speaker 3: pavement and keeping cold water out. You know, the pavement
- 9:53Speaker 3: for humans. You wouldn't want to go lie down on it.
- 9:56Speaker 3: I mean, it's about thirty to forty degrees hotter, if
- 10:00Speaker 3: if not, if not more than what the air temperature
- 10:03Speaker 3: is that under the little pads on dogs and cats
- 10:08Speaker 3: are dogs specifically, is probably not good. So people need to.
- 10:12Speaker 6: Remember that, yes, absolutely, keeping cold fresh water available, shade available,
- 10:18Speaker 6: and limiting your pets time outside as well as you know,
- 10:21Speaker 6: on concrete and asphalt. Please make sure that you're limiting
- 10:25Speaker 6: that in order to keep your pets safe from burns
- 10:28Speaker 6: but also from possible heat stroke, which is a very
- 10:30Speaker 6: scary thing to deal with.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Animals can have heat strokes. People don't. They think about
- 10:34Speaker 3: that only in humans, but it is very possible and
- 10:37Speaker 3: it's very common that animals have heat strokes.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Absolutely, and we've seen it at the shelter and we
- 10:44Speaker 6: have you know, had to help animals with that. So
- 10:46Speaker 6: please just keep that in mind with the upcoming temperature.
- 10:50Speaker 6: Early morning walks, late evening walks, and you know, very
- 10:53Speaker 6: short burst outside during the day if you have to.
- 10:56Speaker 3: All right, Angie, it sounds like I'm going to be
- 10:58Speaker 3: seeing you tomorrow, So yeah, that's in my neighborhood. I
- 11:01Speaker 3: got a lot going on tomorrow. I've got to be
- 11:02Speaker 3: at the ballpark tomorrow night, and I got phone with
- 11:04Speaker 3: the dome. But you're in my neighborhood. I got at
- 11:06Speaker 3: least come over and say hi, So I will. I'll
- 11:08Speaker 3: stop by and see you at the Tays Valley Pet
- 11:10Speaker 3: Go tomorrow.
- 11:11Speaker 6: I appreciate that. I look forward to it, all right.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Angie, Gillwater. We'll talk to you next week. Thanks a lot,
- 11:17Speaker 3: thank you. It is nine eighteen again. Lavender Brown is
- 11:21Speaker 3: our dog this week in honor of West Virginia Day,
- 11:24Speaker 3: a West Virginia Brown dog. Yet love that Lavender Brown is.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I don't know if she prefers to be called miss
- 11:30Speaker 3: Brown or miss Lavender or like a full name like
- 11:33Speaker 3: you know, but Lavender Brown is her name, and loves
- 11:38Speaker 3: other dogs, loves kids, probably okay with cats, very laid back.
- 11:42Speaker 3: The Golden ticket dog is the way that Angie referred
- 11:45Speaker 3: to Miss Lavender Brown. And she's not Spade yet, but
- 11:50Speaker 3: she will be before she goes out the door. And

- 16:25Speaker 7: light but sweet dessert. So it's going to be the
- 16:28Speaker 7: most unique series that we've ever done.
- 16:31Speaker 6: Here on the Farm.
- 16:32Speaker 7: We're going to be presenting a different flavor of the
- 16:35Speaker 7: world every month. So this month's theme is Asian Fusion
- 16:39Speaker 7: and we're.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Excited Asian fusion. I'll tell you if my man Rich
- 16:43Speaker 3: the realtor, is one of our sponsors here, he's all
- 16:45Speaker 3: about the Asian and I tell you what, he would
- 16:47Speaker 3: absolutely love that. He would love that awesome.
- 16:50Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, we're looking forward to it for sure. So
- 16:54Speaker 7: tickets are on sale now. We still have some tables
- 16:57Speaker 7: available online at Chrisfarm dot com. And then following that,
- 17:01Speaker 7: we're going to be rolling into our annual Low Country
- 17:04Speaker 7: Boil on July twelfth, which is a little bit different.
- 17:08Speaker 7: That's the whole crab legs, shrimp and just that traditional
- 17:14Speaker 7: low Country food that we're looking at, mixed in with
- 17:17Speaker 7: some Gritz Farms corn and produce. So that's always a
- 17:20Speaker 7: good time. Tickets are own sale for that as well.
- 17:23Speaker 7: And then there's a couple more farm dinners, one more
- 17:25Speaker 7: in July and one in August, so definitely check that out.
- 17:29Speaker 3: It all sounds great. Talk about other things going on.
- 17:33Speaker 3: I mean I could talk about food all day, but
- 17:35Speaker 3: talk about some other stuff that you got going on
- 17:37Speaker 3: at Gritz Farms for sure.
- 17:39Speaker 7: So we are also hiring our Fall twenty twenty five
- 17:44Speaker 7: festival team. Grits Fun Farm starts in the middle of
- 17:47Speaker 7: September through the end of October, and we're hiring team
- 17:51Speaker 7: members to help us do a little bit of everything,
- 17:54Speaker 7: whether it's front of house, back of house, food admissions.
- 17:57Speaker 7: But we're also really excited about a new position that
- 18:00Speaker 7: we're offering this fall, and that is our fall Marketing
- 18:05Speaker 7: and Operations internship. We've never launched this before, so it's
- 18:10Speaker 7: a great opportunity for anyone looking to get that really
- 18:14Speaker 7: great hands on experience in marketing events, hospitality, agritourism. And
- 18:21Speaker 7: we are currently accepting applications for those who might either
- 18:25Speaker 7: be a college student or recent graduate who's looking to
- 18:28Speaker 7: get a little bit of experience in a really great
- 18:31Speaker 7: hands on way. Applications are alive at gritzfarm dot com
- 18:34Speaker 7: as well.
- 18:35Speaker 3: All Right, again, we're talking to Alexander Post about this
- 18:37Speaker 3: thing's going on over at gritz Farm. A day island
- 18:39Speaker 3: showing find Eddieline brought to you imparted by Pinnacle Consultants.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Poor indoor air quality can cause a bunch of health
- 18:44Speaker 3: issues allergies, respiratory problems, et cetera. Pinnacle offers specialized indoor
- 18:48Speaker 3: air quality services for residential, commercial, and industrial type settings.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Visit Pinnacle Corp. Dot net because what you don't know
- 18:55Speaker 3: can hurt you. Speaking of the things that people don't know,
- 18:59Speaker 3: and I told you the last time that we had
- 19:02Speaker 3: you on the show, I think that Gritz Farm is
- 19:05Speaker 3: such a big deal, and it's a big deal for
- 19:07Speaker 3: this area as well. But I mean, in if all
- 19:09Speaker 3: the kids take school trips from literally all over the
- 19:12Speaker 3: state of West Virginia, you literally get visitors from every
- 19:15Speaker 3: state in the Union and foreign countries. But those around
- 19:18Speaker 3: here sometimes we don't know about the things that we
- 19:21Speaker 3: have to offer in our own backyard. What would you
- 19:23Speaker 3: say to people in this area, Alexandra that have never
- 19:26Speaker 3: made the trip to Gritz Farm.
- 19:29Speaker 7: Oh, that's so true, Dave. You definitely have to visit
- 19:31Speaker 7: Grits Farm. We've opened a new location this spring. We
- 19:36Speaker 7: are not only located in Buffalo at the Farm right now,
- 19:40Speaker 7: we've also got our location at Capital Market downtown where
- 19:44Speaker 7: we've been for years, but we just opened at the
- 19:47Speaker 7: brand new South Charleston Farmers Market. And we've also got
- 19:51Speaker 7: a mobile produce stand opening today on West Virginia Day
- 19:55Speaker 7: at the Gateway Plaza shopping Center parking lot. That's an
- 19:59Speaker 7: annual spot been for the last several years and We
- 20:02Speaker 7: just encourage you guys to come out and check out
- 20:05Speaker 7: the local West Virginia produce that either we grow or
- 20:09Speaker 7: fellow West Virginia farmers grow as we move into the summertime.
- 20:13Speaker 7: It's just a really great way to support local businesses
- 20:15Speaker 7: but also get really good food.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'll go ahead and put a plug in
- 20:19Speaker 3: for the South Charleston Farmers Market. I had never been
- 20:23Speaker 3: until a couple of weeks ago, and my wife and
- 20:25Speaker 3: I have gone the last two saturdays in a row,
- 20:26Speaker 3: and chances are we're going to end up there tomorrow
- 20:28Speaker 3: as well. You knows it's fantastic there. I mean, and
- 20:33Speaker 3: by the way, cheap plug for our sister station ninety
- 20:36Speaker 3: eight to seven a Mountain. We're going to be broadcasting
- 20:38Speaker 3: live from there tomorrow with the folks at secure Net.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Steve Animal will be live there tomorrow. So it'd be
- 20:43Speaker 3: a great opportunity for you to stop by and learn
- 20:46Speaker 3: about secure Net, but also would be a great opportunity
- 20:48Speaker 3: for you to see what they've got there at the
- 20:51Speaker 3: farmers Market, because it is truly a show piece for
- 20:55Speaker 3: South Charleston, for the Kanawa Valley.
- 20:58Speaker 7: Yeah, it's great day. We're We're so happy and grateful
- 21:01Speaker 7: to be there. It's been great for the community and
- 21:04Speaker 7: we look forward to seeing it grow and seeing more
- 21:06Speaker 7: people come out and shop.
- 21:08Speaker 3: I want to ask you this, and then I'll let
- 21:10Speaker 3: you go because I know you're very busy and I
- 21:12Speaker 3: didn't need to put you on the spot. But it
- 21:14Speaker 3: is West Virginia Day, and.
- 21:18Speaker 6: What now.
- 21:18Speaker 3: I'm not going to give you. I'm not going to
- 21:19Speaker 3: give you a quiz or anything like that, I promise,
- 21:22Speaker 3: although knowing you, I think you could probably as that anyway,
- 21:25Speaker 3: but I'm not going to do that. But you're a
- 21:26Speaker 3: younger person, Okay, You've chosen to have to make you
- 21:32Speaker 3: know the early part of your life at least here
- 21:34Speaker 3: in West Virginia. What is it that you like about
- 21:36Speaker 3: West Virginia so much?
- 21:39Speaker 7: I love the people in West Virginia, and I know
- 21:41Speaker 7: that you probably get that answer a lot, but it's true.
- 21:44Speaker 7: Everybody's so friendly, and especially being out at Grits Farm. Yes,
- 21:49Speaker 7: we operate in different locations downtown, but my office is
- 21:53Speaker 7: primarily in Buffalo, and being up here you have to
- 21:57Speaker 7: travel ten minutes up a mountain to get here. There's
- 21:59Speaker 7: some thing just so special about it. It really does
- 22:02Speaker 7: have its own type of magic and just seeing it,
- 22:05Speaker 7: you would never expect it to be here. And something
- 22:07Speaker 7: so so great and wonderful that a family has produced
- 22:11Speaker 7: and put together almost over the last hundred years. It's
- 22:14Speaker 7: just a really special thing to be part of.
- 22:16Speaker 4: All right.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Didn't mean to put you on the spot there, but
- 22:18Speaker 3: anytime that I talk to you're good. Well, anytime I
- 22:21Speaker 3: talk to a relatively younger person. You know, we don't
- 22:24Speaker 3: have enough of you here in West Virginia, and I
- 22:27Speaker 3: like to be able to, you know, say, okay, well,
- 22:29Speaker 3: you're a younger person. You're choosing to make your life here.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Other young people should do it as well. Let's get
- 22:34Speaker 3: back to the ticket information for the farm to table,
- 22:36Speaker 3: the next one you got comed.
- 22:37Speaker 7: Up, Yes, sir, that is available at gritsfarm dot com.
- 22:41Speaker 7: We've got tables on sale for the upcoming farm Dinner
- 22:45Speaker 7: next Saturday in June, and then we also have tickets
- 22:49Speaker 7: on sale for the Low Country Boil on July twelve,
- 22:51Speaker 7: so be sure and check it out.
- 22:52Speaker 3: All right, we'll talk to you here in a couple
- 22:54Speaker 3: of weeks. I appreciate you being here.
- 22:55Speaker 7: Thanks a lot, Thanks, Dave, appreciate it.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Alexandra posts again with the folks over at Gritz Farm again,
- 23:01Speaker 3: not only there in Buffalo in that area of Putnam County,
- 23:04Speaker 3: but also as they said, you know, they've got their
- 23:06Speaker 3: place at Capitol Market, they got their place at the
- 23:08Speaker 3: South Charleston Farmers Market, and they are expanding, expanding day.
- 23:12Speaker 3: It's one of the true true gifts that West Virginia has.
- 23:15Speaker 3: One of the great things we have going for it's
- 23:16Speaker 3: a grit farms because I tell you there's a lot

- 24:29Speaker 3: three or four times a year that we have all

- 25:49Speaker 3: this about West Virginia, all right, and when I'll talk
- 25:52Speaker 3: about this with our other guests that are coming in
- 25:53Speaker 3: as well. We have our issues in West Virginia. We
- 25:57Speaker 3: all know what the issues are. I absolutely love it here.
- 26:01Speaker 3: I mean, like a lot of you, I've had opportunities,
- 26:03Speaker 3: plenty of opportunities to go to other states. I choose
- 26:07Speaker 3: to be here. I was out of the state. Well
- 26:10Speaker 3: actually I actually lived in West Virginia, but worked across
- 26:14Speaker 3: the river at a radio station in Ohio for a
- 26:16Speaker 3: short time out of college. And I enjoyed that. But
- 26:21Speaker 3: I love Mountain Mamma man. I love West Virginia. I
- 26:24Speaker 3: love it. And we were asked. Marcia Kavallik from our
- 26:27Speaker 3: news team, sent out an email to all of us
- 26:30Speaker 3: a little bit earlier around our different stations around the
- 26:34Speaker 3: state and ask us to talk about why we liked
- 26:37Speaker 3: West Virginia and she was going to compile them all,
- 26:39Speaker 3: I guess, and do them on her lot. She does
- 26:40Speaker 3: a show similar to this one, but it's in Martinsburg.
- 26:44Speaker 3: And I said, one of the things I like about
- 26:46Speaker 3: this state is I love the you know it's cliche
- 26:50Speaker 3: to say to people, but like Alexander said, but I
- 26:52Speaker 3: really really do love the people of West Virginia. I
- 26:54Speaker 3: love the food, and I like the diversity. And when
- 26:58Speaker 3: you say diverse, people roll their eyes at you sometimes.
- 27:01Speaker 3: But what I mean by that is you couldn't be
- 27:04Speaker 3: any more different than what Martinsburg is, to what Mingo
- 27:09Speaker 3: County is, to what Wheeling is, to what Princeton is,
- 27:14Speaker 3: even the differences between Morgantown and Charleston. I mean, I
- 27:18Speaker 3: love it. I love West Virginia. Sorry, I'm a geek.
- 27:21Speaker 3: I'm a geek for Mountain Mama. We'll take a break.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Speaking of geek, Steve Animal, It's going to stop by

- 30:25Speaker 3: Here's Animal Ale, Animal Ale. And I went to Ale
- 30:29Speaker 3: was I did have a sandwich named after me, Okay,
- 30:32Speaker 3: at a place it's no longer in business, but I'm
- 30:35Speaker 3: with you on Nett. Yeah, I had a sandwich named
- 30:37Speaker 3: after me. It was the Dave Allen Special, and it
- 30:40Speaker 3: was at Fat Jack's Barbecue in Logan, and it was
- 30:43Speaker 3: grilled steak with almost like a Philly except it had
- 30:48Speaker 3: jalapenos on. And that was the Dave Allen Special.
- 30:50Speaker 14: So we feel bad too, together because Gonzo Berger had
- 30:54Speaker 14: a big Jimmy and a little Jimmy named after me.
- 30:57Speaker 3: I remember now we have no gonzo burger and what
- 30:59Speaker 3: was the what was what was on the same with
- 31:01Speaker 3: John Berger.
- 31:03Speaker 14: Frankie said, Jimmy, what's your favorite burger? I said, well,
- 31:05Speaker 14: you know, maybe you don't know, but I ate like
- 31:07Speaker 14: a five year old.
- 31:09Speaker 4: So put a little.
- 31:10Speaker 14: Bacon on it, maybe some cheese and some ketchup. He said,
- 31:13Speaker 14: well that's the big Jimmy, right here it is.
- 31:15Speaker 3: So here's where I am on burgers, all right. And
- 31:17Speaker 3: I don't promise we're not going to make this all
- 31:19Speaker 3: about food. Here's where I am on burgers. I love
- 31:21Speaker 3: a good burger and I like it. You can put
- 31:24Speaker 3: whatever on it. I just don't want a ton of
- 31:26Speaker 3: toppings because I think it takes away from the flavor.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Give me some cheese, give me some bacon, give me
- 31:32Speaker 3: some mayo, and maybe a little onion, and that's it.
- 31:35Speaker 3: And I'm good that because I want to be able
- 31:37Speaker 3: to taste the burger.
- 31:38Speaker 6: You know.
- 31:39Speaker 14: And they were delicious.
- 31:40Speaker 7: All right.
- 31:41Speaker 14: Anyway, I am here, you were here. This is a
- 31:43Speaker 14: pretty neat event.
- 31:44Speaker 2: No Levy.
- 31:45Speaker 14: Tonight, I'll be down at Rolls on the River after
- 31:47Speaker 14: I'm over at the Animal l thing. But next Thursday
- 31:50Speaker 14: and Friday day at the Benny Keatam Temple right there
- 31:52Speaker 14: beside the Convention Center. It's the second annual we had
- 31:55Speaker 14: the inaugural year last year. It's the Donna l Skin
- 32:00Speaker 14: Your Expo and it's put together by our friends at
- 32:03Speaker 14: loved Ones. It's a real nice opportunity for seniors and
- 32:08Speaker 14: people our age and forties and fifties taking care of
- 32:11Speaker 14: our loved ones to maybe come and get some engaging information.
- 32:15Speaker 14: We're going to have some health assessments for the seniors.
- 32:18Speaker 14: We're gonna bust people in there. We're gonna have some
- 32:20Speaker 14: educational at lunch and learns. We're gonna have a caregiver
- 32:23Speaker 14: appreciation night. It starts at ten o'clock in the morning
- 32:26Speaker 14: on a Thursday of the twenty six. It'll go to
- 32:29Speaker 14: about seven that evening and then the next day like
- 32:31Speaker 14: ten to four. But I just really I think it's
- 32:35Speaker 14: a really neat opportunity. It's free to come in, there's
- 32:38Speaker 14: going to be a nominal fee for the blood work,
- 32:41Speaker 14: and we were able to secure our good friends at
- 32:43Speaker 14: Boom Memorial Health Boom Memorial Hospital.
- 32:47Speaker 3: They've been great.
- 32:47Speaker 14: They're going to come in and they're going to provide
- 32:50Speaker 14: really a nice lab work or blood work package for
- 32:53Speaker 14: you where they're going to assess your CBC, your comprehensive lipid,
- 32:57Speaker 14: your thyroid, your hemoglobe and a one see testosterone prostate cancer.
- 33:02Speaker 14: They're going to do that entire package of blood work
- 33:05Speaker 14: for you for only seventeen dollars. So and it's for
- 33:08Speaker 14: all people to come. It's an opportunity to come down
- 33:11Speaker 14: and get some blood work. I'll be getting mine done.
- 33:13Speaker 14: We're going to have entertainment most of the day. Our
- 33:16Speaker 14: good friend a triple A entertainment JK the DJ. We're
- 33:21Speaker 14: going to have a caregivers Appreciation Night Dave on Thursday
- 33:25Speaker 14: from five to seven. And so, if you're listening to
- 33:27Speaker 14: this and you're a caregiver of a loved one, or
- 33:31Speaker 14: you work at a nursing home, you worked at assisting,
- 33:33Speaker 14: or you work for an agency, will you go into
- 33:35Speaker 14: homes and take care of our aging population. We want
- 33:39Speaker 14: to honor you with a caregivers Appreciation Night five to seven.
- 33:43Speaker 14: Just let us know that you're going to come. We'll
- 33:45Speaker 14: have a little swag for you, maybe it's a little
- 33:47Speaker 14: certificate will acknowledge you, and then we're going to have
- 33:50Speaker 14: a little special entertainment. Lee Dean Sings. He's going to
- 33:53Speaker 14: be there as Frank Sinatra, and he's even bringing Marilyn
- 33:57Speaker 14: Monroe with him. So that is always kind of neat
- 33:59Speaker 14: on this stage there at Benny Keatam again, if you'd
- 34:03Speaker 14: like more information the Donna Skien Seniorexpo dot com Donna
- 34:08Speaker 14: Skeen Senior Expo dot com. A really neat thing that
- 34:13Speaker 14: link is doing. Our good friend Jeb Corey. He's offering
- 34:16Speaker 14: a shuttle and we're going to many of the senior
- 34:19Speaker 14: high rise facilities throughout the Canal Valley, so we're bussing
- 34:23Speaker 14: folks in, We're shuttling folks in. There's going to be
- 34:26Speaker 14: about thirty vendors there with again engaging interactive information and
- 34:32Speaker 14: maybe some health assessments, not just the blood work, but
- 34:35Speaker 14: there'll be folks there with blood pressures and maybe some
- 34:38Speaker 14: different assessments. It's just going to be a pretty special
- 34:41Speaker 14: opportunity for us as caregivers and for us as seniors.
- 34:46Speaker 14: I'm right in the mix of both of these demographic days.
- 34:49Speaker 14: So it's just a really neat opportunity. To Donna Skeen
- 34:55Speaker 14: years ago, she was just one of those ladies who
- 35:00Speaker 14: wanted to offer her friends and her neighbors the opportunity
- 35:05Speaker 14: to be respectful and stay at home as they age,
- 35:08Speaker 14: and so she started a company called loved Ones, probably
- 35:11Speaker 14: twenty five thirty years ago, and it came from her mother.
- 35:16Speaker 14: Jenna Skeen is now the CEO of loved Ones, Donna's daughter,
- 35:22Speaker 14: and Jenna speaks so passionately in honor of Donna, her mom,
- 35:27Speaker 14: about how she just wanted to take care of her grandmother.
- 35:30Speaker 14: And then it became friends and neighbors and West Virginia
- 35:34Speaker 14: as one of the oldest populations in the state, and
- 35:37Speaker 14: we're very proud, and you just got done saying how
- 35:39Speaker 14: proud you are of being from West Virginia. And we
- 35:42Speaker 14: also are so proud. We want to stay in our home.
- 35:45Speaker 14: We want to stay in our house. And so Donna
- 35:48Speaker 14: made sure that folks had the opportunity to do that
- 35:51Speaker 14: and that she passed in two thousand and eight. Jenna
- 35:54Speaker 14: started this event last year called the Donna L. Skane
- 35:58Speaker 14: Senior Expo in her mother's name, and so we just
- 36:01Speaker 14: honor her. The logo is kind of a character a
- 36:04Speaker 14: sketch of her mom, Donna's this whole Senior Expo. The
- 36:09Speaker 14: tagline is compassion and action, and that's what Donna L.
- 36:12Speaker 14: Skien was local gal doing well and loved Ones is
- 36:16Speaker 14: happy to bring this to you, but we couldn't do
- 36:18Speaker 14: it without our good friends at Boone Memorial Hospital. Also
- 36:21Speaker 14: United Healthcare stepped up, Putnam Aging down your Way, Allied
- 36:26Speaker 14: Nursing are good friends at Mountain State. I mentioned linked
- 36:29Speaker 14: and our friends at WWK kind of our TV sponsor.
- 36:34Speaker 14: And I appreciate your opportunity with you guys to come
- 36:37Speaker 14: in here and let us talk about this for a
- 36:39Speaker 14: minute again. Donna Skien, Senior Expo dot com. It's a
- 36:45Speaker 14: free admission. There's a nominal fee for the blood work,
- 36:48Speaker 14: but what a great deal for seventeen dollars fasting for
- 36:51Speaker 14: best results. The event starts at ten o'clock am on
- 36:54Speaker 14: Thursday and ten o'clock am on Friday. That's June twenty sixth,
- 36:58Speaker 14: in the twenty seventh over to Benny Keatham Temple. Are
- 37:01Speaker 14: good friends there at one hundred Charrier Street in Charleston,
- 37:05Speaker 14: by the Convention Center. Dave, I'm appreciative of the time.
- 37:09Speaker 14: One more thing before I leave the Lunch and learns
- 37:11Speaker 14: one on Thursday, June the twenty sixth, This is free
- 37:14Speaker 14: to come. Our good friend JT Hunter with R E.

- 37:22Speaker 14: a seminar called learning to Swim in the Lake of Caregiving.
- 37:26Speaker 14: He is fantabulous.
- 37:28Speaker 3: I love him.
- 37:28Speaker 14: He'll do that from noon to one. We'll have a
- 37:31Speaker 14: box lunch for everybody that attends. Again, just free to
- 37:34Speaker 14: come in and enjoy JT's presentation. Then on Friday, the
- 37:38Speaker 14: presentation for lunch and learn. It's going to be our
- 37:40Speaker 14: good friend Tabitha Justice. She's with just Us Retirement Solutions.
- 37:45Speaker 14: She's going to be doing a seminar and planning ahead
- 37:48Speaker 14: for your needs for later in life. So lots of
- 37:51Speaker 14: neat things, lots of good education. Learn more at the website.
- 37:55Speaker 14: You can always call me for more information. I'm proud
- 37:58Speaker 14: to be on the committee putting this together. Three zero
- 38:00Speaker 14: four by four one four seven five six day.
- 38:05Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 38:05Speaker 14: We got somebody right here to my right.
- 38:06Speaker 3: Hold on, Yeah, I got I got a question. You

- 39:08Speaker 3: the studio with a sandwich and a soda in our
- 39:12Speaker 3: brand new studio, define the rule against food in the studio.

- 39:22Speaker 3: got an al name, comes in here like you know,
- 39:24Speaker 3: like Jared from sup. Okay, that's not a good example.
- 39:27Speaker 3: But he comes in. But he comes in with a
- 39:29Speaker 3: with a sandwich.
- 39:30Speaker 14: That soda pop bottle. It might look like soda, but
- 39:32Speaker 14: I have a feeling his animal uh shows thrown on
- 39:40Speaker 14: your sandwich.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Have a great wife? How did you?
- 39:43Speaker 14: You scored pretty high on that for someone of your caliber.
- 39:46Speaker 14: Before that high, I missedownd quite often all the time.
- 39:49Speaker 4: I mean, she stalked me.
- 39:51Speaker 3: I remember the scat. That's a true story. Actually, yes,
- 39:56Speaker 3: she actually I was talking too, but she just had
- 39:58Speaker 3: more gusts than I did. Yeah, and what she did?
- 40:01Speaker 3: You know, Jody has a night Here's what. Jody has
- 40:04Speaker 3: an identical twin sister. Okay, and so they took shifts
- 40:08Speaker 3: and stalking from what I understand, because she seems like.
- 40:13Speaker 14: Said the end o the day about their birthday coming up,
- 40:15Speaker 14: and we're going to try to make their birthday. I said,
- 40:18Speaker 14: how did you even? I said, I can hardly tell
- 40:19Speaker 14: them a party said no, good for me.
- 40:21Speaker 4: I couldn't either.
- 40:23Speaker 3: I love you, all right, Animal Thanks? All right, okay,
- 40:28Speaker 3: all right, So tonight we're going to be over at
- 40:30Speaker 3: five Street and we are going to launch Animal Ale,
- 40:34Speaker 3: your own beer.
- 40:35Speaker 15: Uh dear lord, So how did this whole thing come about? Well,
- 40:38Speaker 15: the end of the world is coming, obviously, we're just
- 40:43Speaker 15: in talk. Sean Meyer and Derek Godwin, good friends from
- 40:48Speaker 15: at Fife, and of course me being here with Sean
- 40:50Speaker 15: and hanging down at Fife. It just kind of snowballed.
- 40:53Speaker 15: We were spitballing about six nine months ago about doing
- 40:57Speaker 15: something a little different, little rock and rollish, and you know,
- 41:00Speaker 15: so here we are months later, and it is the
- 41:04Speaker 15: Animal Ale launch on West Virginia Day. Very grateful, very
- 41:07Speaker 15: humbled and surprised that we have something this cool going on.
- 41:11Speaker 3: So, I mean, you've been in radio since what you
- 41:14Speaker 3: and Marconi like, I think room together it broadcasting school, right, So,
- 41:19Speaker 3: so was it always your dream to have your own
- 41:22Speaker 3: beer named after you?
- 41:23Speaker 15: I mean I have drank quite a bit of beer,
- 41:26Speaker 15: you know, but yeah, who would have guessed? I mean,
- 41:30Speaker 15: this is amazing and it's so much fun to do
- 41:32Speaker 15: it here, you know, bringing the radio station, you know,
- 41:37Speaker 15: classic rock winning the I mean, who would have thought
- 41:40Speaker 15: we'd win the West Virginia Broadcasters Association Rock Station of
- 41:43Speaker 15: the Year and then and only our second year, Yes,
- 41:48Speaker 15: not even quite. Yeah, yes, that's pretty that's pretty cool.
- 41:52Speaker 15: But I mean we're always about, you know, just having
- 41:54Speaker 15: a good time, helping people and you know, having some fun.
- 41:57Speaker 4: And what a great day to do it.
- 41:58Speaker 15: West Virginia Day happening And it's going to start at
- 42:02Speaker 15: six o'clock this evening at five Street and Summer Street,
- 42:04Speaker 15: one thirty Summer Street. And uh, I am so looking

- 42:19Speaker 3: can only get it there, right you can' it's not
- 42:21Speaker 3: going to be available, not yet, not in your local stores,
- 42:23Speaker 3: but it will only be available and it's only at

- 42:28Speaker 3: So people come in tonight they can Are you buying
- 42:30Speaker 3: everybody's beer.
- 42:32Speaker 4: Or I mean I've got your charge card?
- 42:34Speaker 3: Of course you do. I don't don't talk about you
- 42:38Speaker 3: and my wife, all right, so so so so you
- 42:42Speaker 3: I mean, people can just sample the beer tonight and
- 42:43Speaker 3: what's and what's the beer like?
- 42:45Speaker 15: So I wanted to so I actually was involved in
- 42:48Speaker 15: part of the whole process. Of course, of course I
- 42:52Speaker 15: need another sample over here and after a while it because.
- 42:56Speaker 4: They're beautiful.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Yeah, but you look beautiful, Stea, go ahead.
- 43:01Speaker 15: But I wanted a light beer taste, but not necessarily
- 43:04Speaker 15: a light beer. And I definitely did not want a
- 43:06Speaker 15: heavy you know, a beer you need to eat with
- 43:08Speaker 15: a spoon or a fork. I just wanted something that
- 43:13Speaker 15: had a nice color, kind of a golden amber to it.
- 43:16Speaker 3: And they actually have a picture I haven't posted on
- 43:18Speaker 3: the Mountain Facebook page, but I will. I have a
- 43:20Speaker 3: picture that all put up on the Mountain Facebook. You
- 43:22Speaker 3: can actually see what the beer looks like.
- 43:24Speaker 15: And it's phenomenally awesome. So Derek John and the rest
- 43:27Speaker 15: of the career, the brewers over at five did a
- 43:30Speaker 15: awesome job. Looking forward to the party this evening that starts,
- 43:33Speaker 15: like I said, at six, and it'll go on till
- 43:36Speaker 15: whoever knows.
- 43:37Speaker 3: So I mean, and that we got rolls on the
- 43:39Speaker 3: river going on tonight in Charleston. There's so many things
- 43:42Speaker 3: going on. Of course, we're all going to be down

- 46:57Speaker 3: or whatever. You're not a West Virginia gap. It is
- 47:00Speaker 3: West Virginia day. You came here, yes, years ago, I
- 47:04Speaker 3: was transplanted on the run from the police. You came
- 47:06Speaker 3: here years ago, and you chose to make West Virginia
- 47:10Speaker 3: your home. Why you could be? I mean, you've got,
- 47:12Speaker 3: you know, a million dollar talent with a ten cent
- 47:14Speaker 3: brain to quote the great kid Rock, So you could
- 47:17Speaker 3: be working in all seriousness. You've worked in like Connecticut,
- 47:20Speaker 3: You've worked in Austin, all these places. Yes, why why
- 47:24Speaker 3: do you stay here?
- 47:26Speaker 15: Like the first year, I thought, all right, this is
- 47:27Speaker 15: a great stop. You know, I'll hit the road after
- 47:30Speaker 15: your do, like you know, I want to make sure I,
- 47:32Speaker 15: you know, make it at least a year somewhere without
- 47:34Speaker 15: getting fired again. But after the first year, just found
- 47:39Speaker 15: the people were genuinely nice. I mean they were nice people.
- 47:42Speaker 15: There's nice people here that really are and even like
- 47:46Speaker 15: looking at other parts of the country, like cost of
- 47:48Speaker 15: living was starting to go crazy, and it's just like,
- 47:51Speaker 15: but it's nice here, you know, it's like every things
- 47:54Speaker 15: are normal. My mom refers to Saint Albans as Maybury.
- 48:00Speaker 3: Does that means Scott James is mayor Pike.
- 48:02Speaker 4: I guess so.
- 48:05Speaker 15: But yeah, I mean it's a throat. It's an easy
- 48:07Speaker 15: city to manage. It has like when I was in Providence,
- 48:10Speaker 15: it reminded like Providence was an easy city to manage,
- 48:14Speaker 15: even though it was it's still a large city at
- 48:17Speaker 15: the time, but like coming here it was like a
- 48:19Speaker 15: mini Providence.
- 48:20Speaker 4: It's like, oh, this place is cool. It's manageable.
- 48:22Speaker 15: You can go out to the suburbs and you know,
- 48:24Speaker 15: get away from the city if you want, or and
- 48:27Speaker 15: then you have all the whitewater rafting and all the
- 48:29Speaker 15: other cool stuff that the state has to offer.
- 48:31Speaker 3: So it was it just I'm always the reason I
- 48:34Speaker 3: ask you that is because I'm always interested. And we
- 48:36Speaker 3: had from Gritz Farm earlier on the show, Alexander Alexandra
- 48:40Speaker 3: Post and a young person who's chosen to live here. Yeah,
- 48:45Speaker 3: and you, an old person, have chosen to to to
- 48:50Speaker 3: stay here, and I like that and that's why. And
- 48:52Speaker 3: how long have you been.
- 48:53Speaker 15: Here thirty I've going on thirty six years, and I
- 48:57Speaker 15: mean I met my wife at Mulligan's.
- 48:59Speaker 3: Yeah, we've been. We we discussed that stalking story.
- 49:01Speaker 4: Really. Yeah, I'm a victim.
- 49:05Speaker 3: That's why I wanted to bring you into just to
- 49:06Speaker 3: ask that, you know, because we need more stories like that.
- 49:10Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean, what a what a great place, easy
- 49:12Speaker 15: access to get around and go do stuff for about
- 49:15Speaker 15: three three and a half hours.
- 49:16Speaker 4: You know, you've got DC six away.
- 49:18Speaker 3: Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Charlotte, you.
- 49:20Speaker 15: Know, Cincinnati. I mean it's pretty awesome.
- 49:23Speaker 3: Amandaville. Yeah, all the big towns, rocking and rolling, pinch.

- 49:42Speaker 3: That's the funny thing about it is I thought that's
- 49:45Speaker 3: probably my sandwich because I have a sandwich and instant
- 49:48Speaker 3: there and when as soon as you came down here
- 49:49Speaker 3: and I started, I said, he's taking my sandwichle my

- 50:38Speaker 3: Adorable Danny Ray, who is going to be inducted into

- 51:12Speaker 17: across this country, and I've been fortunate to travel the world.
- 51:16Speaker 17: And while it's nice to see other things, it's nice
- 51:18Speaker 17: to be other places understand how other people live. I
- 51:21Speaker 17: have never felt at ease the way I do here.
- 51:25Speaker 17: Maybe that's because of family, but it's extended family too.
- 51:29Speaker 17: I grew up in a small neighborhood population town of
- 51:33Speaker 17: about a thousand people called Sylvester, West Virginia, in Boone County.
- 51:36Speaker 17: Everybody knew everybody, everybody knew where everybody's hide a key was,
- 51:41Speaker 17: people watched out for everybody. It was a great place
- 51:45Speaker 17: to grow up and feel like you belonged. And that
- 51:49Speaker 17: doesn't happen everywhere else. And now you reside in Tay's
- 51:52Speaker 17: Valley where, yes, as you called me, i am the mayor.

- 52:08Speaker 17: areas to give first responders a break, which is great.
- 52:11Speaker 17: One of the reasons they have to do this, unfortunately,
- 52:13Speaker 17: is we're starting to see some examples and hearing rumblings
- 52:16Speaker 17: of looting.
- 52:17Speaker 3: Spent the whole show talking about how great West Virginia
- 52:19Speaker 3: is and you're gonna shoot it all the crap coming
- 52:20Speaker 3: up next hour. Maybe maybe they're looters from other places. Yeah,
- 52:24Speaker 3: there you go.
- 52:24Speaker 10: There, we'll go with that.
