- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Our tech team and communications team did that.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: I love that video.
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: And you get to see it about ten more times.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: I know why you're in church this morning, by the way.
- 0:09SPEAKER_01: You don't fool me.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: I know why you're the same reason I'm here.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: You're here to pray for the Chiefs.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: To win their victory over New England in our fight for truth, justice, and the American way.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: No patriots this morning.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: We can be patriotic, but not patriots.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Um, scary.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Anyway, Isaiah Challenge.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: If you're visiting this morning, we're in an Isaiah challenge for three months.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: We're going to go through the book of Isaiah, and the Isaiah Challenge, as you've already heard this morning from Teresa, is a challenge to read through the book.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: We're reading through the book together.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: It's about five chapters a week, and I'm writing devotionals that go along with it.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Uh this week, chapters 11 through 15.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: How many of you are reading with me through the book of Isaiah?
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Wow, this is great.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: How many of you doing my devotionals?
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: You better.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: It takes me hours to do.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: I love those.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: So somebody asked me my favorite part of last week.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: I said chapter 6 through 10 of Isaiah.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: So um, so anyway, I'm so glad that you're doing those.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: So um I'm looking forward to this message this morning.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Title of it is What a Wonderful Name.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Some of you read that chapter, chapter 9 this last week.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: We sang songs that related to Isaiah 9.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: And uh even though the verse we're gonna look at, Isaiah 9 talks about him being called by this name, it's more like nicknames that we hear today, or uh the word for it is sobriquet.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: Say that word and you'll be cool.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Sobriquet.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Nicknames, handles, titles, or whatever.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna start with a trivia quiz.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna start with a trivia quiz.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Let's see what you know.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna give you nicknames uh down through the years of athletes or stars or whatever, and you tell me who the person was.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, are you ready?
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: So let's go.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: Stars of stage and screen.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: We'll start with an easy one.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: The Duke.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Very good.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: This is a little harder.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: The Rock.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Dwayne Johnson.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's not, he's now just Dwayne Johnson, but millennials did pretty well on that one.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: For those of you a little older, the singing cowboy?
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: No, the king of the cowboys.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: That was right.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Rogers, the singing cowboys, Gene Autry.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: The Queen of Soul, Man in Black.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's go with uh how about athletes, the Sultan of SWAT.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Babe, galloping ghost?
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: You're not from Wheaton?
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Red Grange, Iron Horse Lou Gehrig, world strongest man, you probably don't know Paul Johnson, do you?
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: How about let's go basketball?
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Do you know uh the mailman?
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Carl.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: How about um if I told you this guy's name was Eldric Eldric Woods, what would be his tiger?
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Eldric.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: I would switch to.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: So, football, the Minister of Defense.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Reggie White, a round mound of rebound, Charles Barclay.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Here's one.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: The bandit.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: Alita, who's the bandit?
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Her husband, Ken Berry.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna Ken's not here this morning.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: I'm ashamed of you.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: When I see Ken, I'll tell him you all knew that he was an all-star, that his nickname with the Chicago White Sox as an all-star was the bandit, because he stole a lot of extra base hits from people.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: You guys are awful.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: You should know that.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, really.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: The greatest.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Muhammad Ali.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Okay, how about the quarterbacks today?
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Goat, G-O-A-T, greatest of all time.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Boo, Tom Brady, come on.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: And he's playing against Showtime, known as the Kansas City Masterpiece, Casey Masterspiece and the Kansas City Canon.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: What is this?
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Are we all women in here?
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Give me a break.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: What?
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: I was good.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: I hope this means the women will be watching the game today with their husbands.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: How about America's leaders, presidents, kings, stuff like that?
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: The father, uh father of his country.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: The great emancipator.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: The Kansas Cyclone has to be Dwight David Eisenhower.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: The Gipper?
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's a religious crowd.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: We'll go Bible.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Who is the shepherd king?
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: How about the weeping prophet?
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: The wise man?
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: The beloved disciple?
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: John, the tent maker?
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Paul?
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Not bad.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: So I want to talk to you about nicknames, names, titles, sobriques of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ today.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: And they come out of a really interesting passage, okay?
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: And he is given what we would call nicknames, but they're just called names in Isaiah 9, 6.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: And in my view, if you will learn the meaning of these four titles or nicknames, you will come to know your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ better.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: And that's my goal for this morning, that you will love Him and appreciate Him more as a result of this message on Isaiah 9.6.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: But it let's say this first together.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: It's on the screen so you can read it if you want to.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Feel free, though you should know it by heart.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Say it together: for to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders, and he will be called wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: That's Isaiah 9, 6.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: But it comes in a context, it comes in a context we've been discussing in the last several weeks.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: This is a context in which we are dating.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: About 740 BC, Israel is divided into a northern and southern kingdom, and a great enemy, the first great army of all time, Assyria, invented modern warfare.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Very cruel, very bloody.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: They are sweeping down from the northeast, and they're about to decimate, destroy, and eliminate entirely the northern Trimton tribes of Israel, which are called Samaria, called Israel, called the Northern Kingdom.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: And they're about to do that.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: We're in about 740 BC.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: This destruction happens in 722 BC.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: So this destruction is about to happen, and then Assyria will come on down and it will surround Jerusalem, and it will decimate a lot of the southern kingdom and Jerusalem as well.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, around Jerusalem, but they will be spared.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: And we'll be talking about that.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Isaiah is a prophet who lives at this time.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: He has royal blood in them.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: He's related to kings.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: He's the only city prophet, the only royal prophet, in a sense, in the Bible.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: And he's been discussing about how, because of their sin, God is going to judge his people.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: He's going to judge them by bringing upon them a foreign nation that's going to brutalize them.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: And as a result, they're going to be in darkness.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Now, what he does, he's explained that up till chapter 9, and now he's going to sort of move forward in history.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Prophets love to do this.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: And even before the darkness falls on Israel, he's going to look back at a better moment and say, you know what?
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: Positively, the people living in darkness have seen a great light.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Past tense, it's like he's moving forward in history 700 years.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: On those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has shone.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: So basically he's saying in the 700s, a light is going to dispel the darkness that is about to come upon you.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: And it's so certainly going to happen.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: I'm going to state it as though it's already happened in the past tense.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: In verse 3, he says, and joy is going to dispel your gloom.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: You've enlarged the nation and increased their joy.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: They rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: The third thing he's going to say in verse 4 is that freedom is going to replace their captivity.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: They're not even captive yet, but they're going to be in captivity, and then they're going to be set free, and it's so certain the freedom will come that he now says, You have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: And fourth and finally, he says that victory will overcome defeat.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: In fact, swords will be beaten into plowshares.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: He doesn't say it exactly that way.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: What he says in verse 5 is every warrior's boot used in battle, and by that metaphor, he means if the boots, if this happens to the boots, it happens to the rest of the armor as well.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning and will be fuel for the fire.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Now the question then rises as people listen to the prophet, when will this happen and how will it happen?
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: How will that gloom and death and captivity and destruction and slavery and darkness that you've been predicting are about to happen to us for our sins?
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: How are those things finally going to go away?
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: And his answer, somewhat surprisingly, is well, a child is going to make it happen.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: His next verse is, for to us a child is born, to us a star is given, and the government will be on his shoulders, and so forth and so on.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Shouldn't be a surprise.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Children are God's obsession in these chapters.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: In chapter 7, there was a child going to be born called Emmanuel, God with us.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: In chapter 8, there's a child going to be born called Mehershal al Hashbaz, and in this chapter, it's a child with four nicknames, and in chapter 11, it's, and the truth is all of these children so sort of end up being the one and same child in prophetic history.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: So a child is going to bring about this incredible redemption for the nation of Israel.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: And it starts off by saying, to us, a child is born.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: This shows that this child, whom we know is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, because of what's about to follow.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: We know that this is going to be a human child.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: It's going to be born.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: He's going to be born a child.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: To us, a son is given.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Perhaps that also emphasizes his humanity, because Jesus was a son.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: I prefer to think that in a sense that Mary, the child was born to Mary, that's his human side.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: And here's his divine side, God gave us his son.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: But either way, it doesn't matter.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Today most people in America agree that Jesus was human.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: People didn't used to think that.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: And of course, if you go over to the Muslim world today, they don't believe that anyone who is a son of God could, and anyone who died on a cross could be God.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: He has, you know, has to be human.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: So here in America are the people who believe Jesus was a real person.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Notice it's pretty high.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: It's over 90%.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: Millennials, 5% lower, 87%, and it is true.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: I have millennials who say, now, do we really believe that Jesus is a real person?
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: And you know, you laugh and you go, uh duh, yeah.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, outside the Bible, there are quotations, discussions about Jesus and Josephus and so forth.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: So, but again, more than 90% believe that unto us a child is born that Jesus was really a human being.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: To us, the Son is given.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: So tell us about that.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Well, this happened in 4 BC.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: In fact, this statement that's present tense, it's sort of like you're listening to the radio, maybe.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, and the newsman comes on, it's 4 BC, and he says, We're outside the cave.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: We're outside the cave.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: We hear a baby's about to be born.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: I'm listening, I'm listening.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Yes, I hear the cry behind me.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: To us a child is born, to us a son is given.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: And you're going, It's it's really live.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: It's happening right now.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's 4 BC.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: And then all of a sudden, then you see the next line, and you go, but that baby didn't grow up.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Did Jesus grow up to run the government?
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Was the government on his shoulders?
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: No, that hasn't happened yet.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: In fact, you see the fireworks there?
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: It's gonna happen and it's gonna be so exciting.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be like July the 4th.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Because one day soon, I'm just letting you know it's gonna happen in 2030.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: I know, I know I've never predicted the date before, but I I got an inside word on that one.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: No, I'm kidding.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: But I I don't see that it can be too much longer.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: The nation of Israel has to be alive and living, and they are in danger from 22 countries around them, so I don't know how much longer they can last.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: So I don't know, but whatever.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: It's still future.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: So here you go.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: This this line is 4 BC.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: This line is 20 something AD, perhaps, right?
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: Isn't that interesting?
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Because Jesus hasn't run the government yet, so where are we in 2019?
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Get ready for it.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Get ready for it.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Where are we?
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: The answer is right here.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: We're in the end.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Come on, I thought that was brilliant of me.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: So what?
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: So 2,000 years, and 2,000 years, including you and me and us right now, we're in the end.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: We're in the in-between time when the child was born and when he takes over the government.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's impressive.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: If I was at an African American church, they'd be going, amen, brother.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: Don't fake it.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: So so anyway, so here's what's going to happen.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: Here's the prediction, here's the prophecy.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Isn't this great?
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: So that's what he's saying is going to happen, and that's going to take care of the darkness and the gloom and the captivity and everything else.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: All right?
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: So now we want to get into the actual names.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: What are the actual nicknames that he's going to be called?
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: And the answer is the name.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: His name, his first one's going to be wonderful counselor.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: And in the old Bibles, the King James, they had that as wonderful, comma, counselor.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: And the reason they did that is that wonderful, the word wonderful isn't really an adjective in the Hebrew.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: It's actually a noun.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: The word is wonder counselor.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Maybe like wonder of a counselor.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: And I'm about to tell you, this is my favorite word out of the eight words, the eight key words here in these titles.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: I want to talk about this for a second because it's really wonderful.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: It's no, it's really cool.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Now, that word wonder in Hebrew, still used today, is a really cool word.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: When they hear the word Pele over in Israel, they don't think of the greatest soccer player of all time from Brazil.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: They think of wonder, something that's amazing, perhaps supernatural.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: In fact, there's a popular song in Israel today called Yeled Pele, which means wonder child.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: Parents sing it to their kids.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: You can go on YouTube, you can hear it, it's really jazzy and so forth.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: If you have a child, parent, grandparent that you really like, sing to them.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Yeled Peleh.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Say that with me, Yeled Peleh.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: Yeled Pele.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: So, or Yeled Pele, either way, and that means a wonder child, which of course the Lord Jesus was.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: But we're gonna find out that it means more than just a really cool or beautiful or wonderful child.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: In fact, it's a little bit closer to something that we often say, and that is Wonder Woman.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: Because Wonder Woman isn't just a really cool woman, she was an amazing, almost supernatural woman.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Am I right?
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: And here's the cool thing: Galgado plays her, and Galgado is what nationality?
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: She's Israeli, of course, and so what they call her over there, say it with me, is Isha Pele, Isha Pele.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: So she is Wonder Woman.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: They're very proud of her.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: She may have been Miss Israel in 2004, but then like every other 18-year-old, she had to go join the IDF, the Israeli Defense Forces.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: She turned out to be extremely good at fighting and ended up being actually a combat instructor.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: So she does fit her part really well.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: But she is a, and you're going, would you guys would you get off of this kind of stuff?
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: So anyway, uh I I I have a uh a new student ministry pastor, a Connor, who's gonna be so proud of me for doing this because he's really into DC comedy.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, am I right?
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I'm right.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: So um, so that's Isha, Pele.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Well, what now you're talking about the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: He wasn't Wonder Woman.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: Of course, he was wonder counselor, it was Pele Yoades.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: And by wonder, by the way, this word Pele only used of God in the Bible.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: Okay?
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: Only used of God Himself, never used of a child.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: They may use it of a child, may use it of Wonder Woman, but in the Bible, it is a word that is reserved for uh the Lord God Himself.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: The angel of the Lord, who we know now is Jesus Christ, came to see Samson's mother and said, I have good news for you, O barren woman.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: You're going to have a miracle baby.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: And she said, What's your name?
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: And he wouldn't tell her.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: So she ran, because told her husband, she said, You know, you told me not to talk to anybody who wouldn't tell me their name.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: So she didn't say that.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: But anyway, she said, so you go talk to him.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: So he, Manoa is his name.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: We don't know her.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: She ran to talk to the angel, angel of the Lord.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: And in the process, the angel Lord said, You know, you guys are struggling with the Philistines.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: I'm going to send you a miracle baby.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Your wife's going to have a baby, it's going to be a miracle baby, and then he's going to be just really something else.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: And so never cut his hair and don't let him drink alcoholic drinks and so forth.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: So, and then Manoa goes, uh, my wife's wondering what's your name or something.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: And the angel Lord goes, Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: ESV, Numerican Standard.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Clearly, that doesn't mean he's not saying, seeing it's a really cool name, seeing it's a wonderful name.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: No, he means something different, as the Net Bible says, because why are you asking about my name?
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Seeing it's incomprehensible, it's inscrutable, it's beyond understanding.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: Christian Standard Bible, NIV, Jim Congden version, it is supernatural.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: I don't want to just go something easy.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: It's a supernatural.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: It's a name.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: So when you hear wonderful counselor, it doesn't mean a really nice advisor that I go to to talk about relationships.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: No, it's something.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry about that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: That wasn't nice.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: So what it's just something like this unbelievable, incomprehensible person.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: Only use this name, only used of deity, of God Himself.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: And that's why you find all these verses about God using the word wonder.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Who's like you, Miriam and his her choir sang after they went through the Red Sea?
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Who's like you, majestic in holiness, fearful in praises, doing pele, doing wonders.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Who's like you, O God?
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: The answer is nobody.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Nobody's like you, O God.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Confession, full confession, the song I've sung most often in my life, by far the song that has left these lips thousands of times more than any other song.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: Is a chorus built upon Isaiah 9:6.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: Because when I was uh when I was in college, uh after my freshman year, I'd never ask a girl out on a date in my life.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: I was just so shy and so forth.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: And I knew that if I was ever going to do anything in life, I need to learn how to meet and deal with people.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: So instead of going back home to my loving brothers and sisters and so forth, I took a job selling books door to door.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Southwestern Company out of Nashville, Tennessee, went thousands of miles away from home to the country of Pennsylvania.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Not having a car, didn't have a license or anything, I got a bicycle.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Three summers I rode a bicycle in Pennsylvania, get up at six in the morning, always leave, so I can knock on the first door at 8 a.m.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: in the morning.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: And as I rode my bicycle, trembling, absolutely petrified with fear, to knock on a door.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: To bolster my confidence, I always, always started off by singing, and singing it over and over, a song that I'm going to sing right now with your help Sarovolce.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: That means it's a little quieter.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: If you want to sing it on along with me, if you know it.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: It goes like this his name is wonderful.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: His name is wonderful.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: His name is wonderful.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: He is the mighty king, master of everything.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: His name is wonderful.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Jesus my Lord.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: He's the great shepherd, the rock of all ages.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Almighty God is bow down before him.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Love and adore him.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: His name is wonderful.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Jesus my Lord.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: And in those early days when I was terrified, really scared, I would follow that up immediately with Jesus is a wonderful Savior.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: He will carry you through.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: So I was anyway.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: And God took me through that time, and I learned a lot.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: But this song is built on this verse.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: And by wonderful, it doesn't just mean wonderful.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: It means amazing, incomprehensible pele, is what it means.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: And the word counselor, frankly, means more than advisor, though it includes that.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Jesus was his great counselor, wasn't he?
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: An advisor to, let's say, Nicodemus, who came asking how to be born again, and Zacchaeus asking how he might be forgiven, right?
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Under the rich young ruler.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Jesus had just the right thing to say.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: But to be honest, counselor means something a lot huger than that, than being an advisor, than being a psychologist, than telling you how to solve your relational problems.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: No, counselor means someone who's designed the whole plan of history.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Okay?
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: That's why we read Isaiah saying, Who's directed the Spirit of the Lord?
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Or as his counselor has taught him, with whom did God take counsel?
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: He doesn't mean advice.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: And who instructed him and taught him in the path of justice and taught him knowledge and showed him the way of understanding?
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: Romans picks that up.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: And what for many, many Christian leaders are is their favorite four verses in the Bible, the end of Romans 11, quoting Isaiah 40, when it says, Oh, the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God, how unsearchable.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: There it is, unsearchable, Pele, are his judgments and his ways past finding out.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: For who's known the mind of the Lord, or who has become his counselor, who's first given to him and it shall be repaid?
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: For of him and through him and to him are all things to whom be glory forever, forever.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: No, when it talks about counsel, it's talking more about God working all things according to the counsel of his will.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: So that one day, one day we will be there when he runs the government, that child who has been born, the son who has been given to us, and we will say, Finally we understand, because you set eternity in our hearts, yet none of us could fathom what you'd done from the beginning to end.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: But now we understand that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who were the called according to his purpose.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: We understand that the counsel of your will is brilliant the way you ran history, the way you oversaw my life.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: I struggled with it.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: I couldn't understand what you were doing, but I understand now, God, that you were brilliant, that you were sovereign, that you were a wonder of a designer and a planner.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: That's what this is about.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: This is about a kind of a God who's far more than we can ever imagine.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: And because, frankly, because the Lord Jesus, my Lord Jesus, is the wonderful counselor, the supernatural designer, I'll relax on his plan.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: Amen?
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: And the second uh title that he's given here is mighty God.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: El Gibor, only used of God, never used of a human, mighty Gibor, El Elohim, God.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: He is the mighty God, he is the great warrior, this is the great conqueror, this is the omnipotent one, this is the creator.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: Not everybody believes that Jesus, the child who was born, is the mighty God.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: The media's most favorite, new New Testament professor, the one who gets quoted countlessly on CNN, is a guy, Bart Ehrman, who, full disclosure, went to Moody Bee briefly, Bible Institute, went to Wheaton College briefly, but then uh when his sister died at about age 20, he gave up all of this entirely, turned against God.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: And he famously has said, during his lifetime, three things here, during his lifetime, Jesus himself didn't call himself God.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Number two, didn't consider himself God, and two, three, none of his disciples had any inkling at all that he was God.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: He likes to he likes to speak like Rush Limbaugh used to, because all you have to say is had an inkling that he was God, but had any inkling, had any inkling at all that he was God.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: And of course, the only way you can say this is if you decide that all of those passages in the New Testament were Jesus, in a sense, claimed to be God, and others in the New Testament say that he was God.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: You have to say as he does, well, I've done textual criticism, and those don't belong there.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: So that's exactly why he does that, but of course, CNN quotes him that he's the expert, and he knows that it never said that.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Instead, we read, in the beginning was the word, all things were made by him.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: That is the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: By him were all things created, John 1, Colossians 1.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: We understand that the Lord Jesus Christ was truly the mighty God.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: This last year, Pew Research Center did a poll, national poll in America, thousands upon thousands of Americans, and asked, Do you believe in God or not?
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: And that's an interesting question because we have, remember, more atheists, more agnostics than ever before.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: 80% said, Yes, I do believe in God.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: And then they said, Was it the is it the God of the Bible?
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: And actually, only 56% of Americans believe in the God of the Bible.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: Others said, I believe in God, but not going to be the God of the Bible.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: God, probably another God.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: So at least it's still over half, right?
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: No, however, it's higher than it's ever been.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: No, I don't believe in God, 19%.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: About half of those said, I do believe in some kind of a higher power, but 10% of people today in America say I don't even believe in any higher power other than myself, other than man, other than humanity.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: It gives us a job to do, doesn't it?
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: Then the question was, well, do you believe that Jesus was God?
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: And of course you can imagine adults who believe in God.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: 56% of adults, that includes everybody, millennials, older people, preachers, you know, uh, although a lot of preachers in certain denominations don't believe Jesus was God, uh would say over half, still.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Millennials hours just under half nowadays.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: Spiritual leader, you believe some kind of a spiritual leader, 26%.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: 35%, over a third of millennials today would see that Jesus was not God, but he was a spiritual leader.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: Others aren't sure, haven't made a decision yet.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: The positive thing about this, I would rather have people say no than people not even care and sort of assume they're Christians.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: Gives us a chance to open the Bible and show them the stories of the Lord Jesus and have them change their mind.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: All right?
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: But clearly there's evidence in the New Testament the Lord Jesus Christ, unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: He grew up and he gave us glimpses of the fact, right?
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: That he's mighty God, that he could control the wind, that he could control the waves, that he could heal people, even raise them from the dead, that he could read your mind and read your heart.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: Alright, so because my Lord Jesus Christ is the mighty God, I will recharge myself with his power.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: If you're exhausted, if you're depleted, if that news the doctor gave you or gave your loved one was horrible, you can't go on.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: You may recharge yourself in the fact that your Lord Jesus, your Savior, is the omnipotent, omnipotent, mighty God.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: Third, third, the Lord Jesus Christ, we know the child who was born, the son who was given, is also Aviad.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: He is also everlasting Father, which causes a real problem, doesn't it?
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Because he's the second member of the Trinity, not the first member of the Trinity.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: There he goes Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: We're talking about the Son.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: How in the world can we call him everlasting Father?
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: As you can imagine, there's lots of articles about this, lots of studies, academically wise, and all the commentaries, of course, deal with it.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: And they all conclude, they all prove out of the Old Testament and especially out of Isaiah, that when Isaiah talks about the Father, he's not talking about a specific kind of Trinitarian role or title or position.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: He's talking about a relationship that when Isaiah talks about father, he's talking about your daddy.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: He's talking about something like we talk about when we call George Washington the father of our country.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: We don't mean that he's the boss or whatever.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: We mean it's a relationship that he fathered our country, that he started it, that he was the comfort of our country.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: And so the words everlasting father, as most scholars agree, means he's the father forever.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: And so when he takes over the government and becomes sort of the father of the uh of the country of the future, of heaven, he he will sort of be the leader of it.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: And and that's the kind of person he is.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord Jesus Christ has compassion on those who fear him, and he showed that when he came to earth.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: He had a father's heart for little children, as he has a father's heart for all of us who are born again into his family, and see him as our savior.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: And we will one day see him sitting on a throne, and we will not only call him wonderful, amazing, supernatural counselor, designer, and mighty God, we will actually call him eternal father of eternity, literally, father of eternity.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: Eternal God is your refuge, Moses said, and underneath are the everlasting arms.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: You should know that verse by heart.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: It's so comforting, isn't it?
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: We're talking now about not only God the Father, but the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: If you're depleted, lean back on his arms.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: There's a song we used to sing called Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, safe and secure from all alarms.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Any of you ever hear that old hymn?
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: I torture you with only one verbalized song per message.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: So we won't sing that one.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: But based upon that song and on this verse, I think it's clear.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: I think we can say that because my Lord Jesus is the everlasting Father, I'll rest in his arms, safe and secure from all alarms.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: And fourth and finally, we uh this is the only title that can be used of a human in these four titles.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: All others are restricted to Jesus being God.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: This is Prince of Peace.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: Sar Shalom.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: You've probably heard of that.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: I think there's a Christian synagogue or a messianic synagogue in Kansas City called Beth.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: That means temple or house.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: Temple's Beth Sar Shalom.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: There are a lot of them across the country.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: That means a temple of the Prince of Peace.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: And that's what the Lord Jesus was, just as Hitler was, shall we say, the prince or the Lord of war.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: The Lord Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace, which is something we need because the world is always at war.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: There's war in the Middle East.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: There is always some kind of conflict.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: And worse than the conflict between nations and between relatives and families and friends is the conflict between man and God, which began when Adam and Eve took the lower road away from and rebelled against their creator, who would come down in the evening to walk with them in the garden.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: And then they chose the road away.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: They rebelled, they disobeyed him.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: And as a result, all of mankind was plagued with a virus called sin.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: But God had the solution.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: God the Father sent his son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: Jesus Christ came willingly to the earth.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: He was born as a child.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: He was given as a son.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: He grew up.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: He showed glimpses of the fact that he was a wonderful counselor and a mighty God and an everlasting Father.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: Just glimpses.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: But then on the cross, he did something that proved that at that moment he was the Prince of Peace.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: Because that alienation that had always existed between God and man, the wrath on God's side, the rebellion on our side, all of a sudden on the cross, there, on the cross, a peace treaty, in a sense, signed by God Himself, saying, if you'll be satisfied with what satisfies me, if you'll sign this peace treaty, agreeing with me that the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross, dying for your sins, brings peace, then you know what?
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Our alienation will be gone.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: Reconciliation will be here.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: Isaiah predicted it in chapter 26.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: Lord, you will establish peace for us.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: And that's exactly what he did.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: He established peace for us.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: He came and told his disciples the very night before he died, peace I leave with you, my peace I give you.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: And in other words, I'm the prince of peace, and I'm going to establish it permanently.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Tomorrow noon on the cross, I'm going to die in your place for your sin and offer you a peace treaty.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: Friend, if you feel at odds with God, then maybe you are.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Maybe you've never looked at the cross.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: Maybe you've never told God that you're satisfied with what satisfies him.
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: Sign the peace treaty, agree that the Lord Jesus Christ solves that problem.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: And in that moment, you will find that the Lord Jesus Christ will be to you your personal Prince of Peace.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: And because the Lord Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace, is my Prince of Peace, I'll rejoice in his forgiveness.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: Last summer, a group of us went over for a tour to Greece.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: I took them on the second missionary journey of Paul's great time.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: And as we were driving down to the countryside, we saw one and then a two and then a hundred and then a thousand sunflowers, and our people were so excited to see sunflowers being from Kansas.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: And we told our Greek guide, sunflowers, that's our state flower.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: And she was semi-impressed.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: And she said, We have a lot of them here.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: And they've always had a lot of sunflowers in Greece.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: Which is why there is a Greek myth, a Greek story about sunflowers, because thousands of years ago, well before the time of Christ, they noticed in Greece that sunflowers, more than almost any flower, would seem to follow the sun.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: You know how flowers sometimes seem to turn and face the sun and just bask it in?
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: Well, sunflowers, they seem to just sort of turn and follow the sun.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: The whole field would seem to follow the sun.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: And so they came up with a story explaining it.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: They said there was a beautiful maiden named Clyda or Clyde.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: And uh and she would get up in the morning, this maiden, the moment the sun came over the horizon, and she would go out and she would sit and feel, and she would gaze at the sun, and she fell in love with the sun.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: Today we'd send her into counseling.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: But back then she would just stare at the sun and watch the sun as it went across the sky.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Apparently she'd wear special glasses because there's no word that she ever turned blind.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: But day after day she would do this.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: And when she got old, the gods finally had compassion on her because she was she had pined away for the sun.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: And so as she was dying, they turned her into a sunflower.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: And that's the story of how the sunflower came to be, which is a really neat story, I think, with application for you and for me.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: Because unto us a child is born, and unto us a son is given.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: And when you hear what they called him and what we will call him, his titles, his names, his handles, his sobriquets, then I hope you fall in love with this amazing son, this amazing character, our wonderful counselor, our mighty God, our everlasting father, our prince of peace.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: For if you fall in love with him, then you realize that because he is your wonderful counselor, you can relax in his plan.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: And because he's your mighty God, you can recharge when you're depleted.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: And because he's your everlasting father, you can rest in his everlasting arms.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: And because he's your prince of peace, you can rejoice in his forgiveness.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: One of the great poets and writers of all time in England was named Alfred Tennyson.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: He received an award.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: He was knighted by the Queen.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: This is well over a hundred years ago.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: And because he was knighted by the queen, all of a sudden he was a lord.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: And so that's why you see his name as Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: Alfred Lord Tennyson, he became famous, he became wealthy.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: One day later in his life, an old friend that he'd known many years before came to visit him.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: And as they were walking out back of his mansion, they were walking in his beautiful gardens.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: This friend says, you know, uh, as I get older, I'm thinking about God and I'm thinking about afterlife and so forth.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: He said, You know, you never talk much about God or Jesus or any of that.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: What what what would you mind telling me what do you think of Jesus?
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: Alfred Lord Tennyson stopped and he pointed at a flower.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: He said, What the sun is to that flower, Jesus is to me.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: He's the son of my soul.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: That's what Jesus is to you.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: If you understand that he's your wonderful counselor and mighty God, your everlasting father, and he's your Prince of Feed.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for this incredible glimpse into the future of what we're going to call this child, this son.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: And what a wonderful name it is that we're gonna call him.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: What a beautiful name it is that we'll call him.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: What names names that have come true in our life.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: In Jesus' name.
