Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to many Scroll, everyone.
- 0:21Last night I went to this dinner with Bumble, this brand dinner
- 0:26to reveal the 2025 dating trends that they're predicting.
- 0:30And I am so tired. Like this is what makes me feel
- 0:34in my 30s is when I go out on a weeknight and I didn't even
- 0:40drink and I come home and I don't go to sleep till like
- 0:4311:30. I literally feel so dead the
- 0:47next day. I'm so tired.
- 0:50I feel 100 years old, but let's just get into the stories for
- 0:55today. This week, you guys on the pod
- 0:59in general, including infinite scroll.
- 1:01It is like a walk down memory lane for OG beauty YouTube.
- 1:06So I'm really sorry if you guys don't care about that.
- 1:09But it all weirdly like ties together a lot of the stories
- 1:13from this week, including the deep dive for tomorrow.
- 1:15So the first story that I have for you guys, of course, is that
- 1:18Jeffrey Star has finally appeared on the cancelled
- 1:22podcast. So after a couple of weeks of us
- 1:25waiting to see Jeffrey appear on Tana Mojo and Brooke Schofield's
- 1:29podcast Cancelled, the episode went live this morning.
- 1:33And it was not the bombshell interview that I think a lot of
- 1:38people presumed it would be. He hasn't done anything like
- 1:42this. So mainstream.
- 1:43We talked about this when it was announced, but like he hasn't
- 1:46done any this mainstream in a really long time.
- 1:48So you would think that him returning in this way would be
- 1:53for a reason. Like he'd be ready to like, you
- 1:55know, spill it all, tell a different side of the story.
- 1:59I don't know. But this did not rehab his image
- 2:02at all, at least for me. And it did not give us any new
- 2:07information. It was basically an hour and a
- 2:09half of them rehashing everything we already know about
- 2:11Bye sister, about Shane and Jeffrey, about the entire
- 2:14situation and even in the title. It had like Diddy in it.
- 2:19It had making millions on TikTok.
- 2:21They did talk a bit about how Jeffrey makes money on TikTok
- 2:24through TikTok live and TikTok shop.
- 2:27He said that his makeup brand is the toggles between the number
- 2:31one and #2 makeup brand on TikTok shop usually in the US.
- 2:35It was just so click baity. They talked about drum again and
- 2:39they talked about by sister, but again, it was not like new
- 2:42stuff. It was not anything that we
- 2:44hadn't heard before. I think it's very clear from
- 2:47that interview that moving to Wyoming, leaving LA, putting
- 2:51distance between himself and the beauty community like that
- 2:54didn't change him at all. He still came across so
- 2:58egotistical, entitled, like can't take a single ounce of
- 3:02accountability for anything. He seems so bitter and angry
- 3:05still. I don't know, it just seems like
- 3:08we were watching an interview with Jeffrey Star from like
- 3:112018. The most interesting parts were
- 3:15from in my opinion, were Jeffrey claiming that James Charles
- 3:18manipulated Tati into making her second video S she did buy
- 3:22sister, right? Her next video is when she came
- 3:24back and accused Shane and Jeffrey of manipulating her to
- 3:29make by sister. And you know, Jeffrey's like
- 3:31Shane and I were at the height of our career.
- 3:33Like we obviously didn't give a shit about what they were doing.
- 3:37Like Tati and James just wanted to take us down because we were
- 3:40like the underdogs that were making it.
- 3:43I don't believe that, but whatever.
- 3:46So he claims that James got in Tati's ear and convinced her to
- 3:49make that video to like get back at Shane and Jeffrey.
- 3:53He talked about the infamous birthday dinner.
- 3:55That was kind of the, I would say the biggest like bulk of the
- 3:58episode when it came to him addressing the drama.
- 4:01Tana, Tana, Tana. She was like, what happened at
- 4:07the birthday dinner? Like tell us the real T And it
- 4:10was exactly what we already knew.
- 4:12Like Tati had this birthday dinner, James was there, a lot
- 4:15of her friends and family were there.
- 4:16And it was at the height of, this is what Jeffrey said was at
- 4:19the height of when James was like, you know, newly really
- 4:23wealthy and famous. And he had a bit of an ego
- 4:26problem. He felt very entitled.
- 4:28He just expected that because of this fame and fortune he had
- 4:32that everybody wanted to sleep with him.
- 4:34That's what he said. So he got really into this
- 4:35waiter who was 19, that was serving them at the dinner.
- 4:38And he brought him back to his hotel room.
- 4:40And then the waiter decided he didn't want to do anything.
- 4:43And James was like, this is a ledge.
- 4:45This is all what Jeffrey said. James was like, well, I paid for
- 4:48this hotel room, basically insinuating that James was
- 4:51saying like, you owe me. And then Jeffrey's like we all
- 4:54left that we flew back home and we just had this sick taste in
- 4:57our mouths. And then he's like, that's why
- 4:59Tati did buy sister cuz she thought that like publicly
- 5:02exposing him would reel him in kind of and like de platform
- 5:08him. And then he's like the vitamins.
- 5:10That was like the catalyst to to start it, but like there was so
- 5:14much more under the surface. But like, again, we already knew
- 5:17this If you kept up with everything going on during that
- 5:20time, Like we knew that whole story.
- 5:22Basically. He said he's releasing an
- 5:24autobiography. That's what's next for him.
- 5:27And he also said that he's considering doing like this is
- 5:33what it seems like, like sex lessons online.
- 5:35That is something he's considering doing next.
- 5:39I don't know you guys. It was it was honestly kind of
- 5:43nothing like I would actually, if you guys haven't watched it,
- 5:45I would say you don't need to. I've given you everything and it
- 5:49was just not that interesting. So I'll be interested to see how
- 5:52his interview with Trisha Paytas goes on just Trish because
- 5:57hopefully that will be more interesting because it will
- 5:59rehash like their personal drama, like they even said on
- 6:01canceled, like Tana and Jeffrey like never had any drama and
- 6:05like, I don't know. So we'll see.
- 6:07OK, so on a similar note and off the back of the story from
- 6:11yesterday, I wanted to give a little update because one of you
- 6:14guys actually messaged me a screenshot of this and I was
- 6:16like, Oh my God, I love when you guys like send me things, like
- 6:20updates to my stories that I've covered or just things that you
- 6:23think I should cover it Like it's so cool.
- 6:25So Halo Beauty has addressed the backlash that we talked about
- 6:29yesterday. So as I said, Halo's trying to
- 6:31make this comeback without Tati, and it seems like they're about
- 6:34to launch makeup. They're getting tons of backlash
- 6:37on how everything went down with Tati and now them trying to like
- 6:40launch makeup. Listen to yesterday's episode
- 6:42for like a full breakdown on that.
- 6:43I won't get into it now. But then on top of that
- 6:45backlash, they were getting more backlash because they were like
- 6:49blocking people and deleting comments of people who were
- 6:52asking about Tati, asking for clarification on this, like
- 6:55female lead company that was like guiding them.
- 6:59They said that like Halo Beauty was now being guided by some
- 7:02female lead company and everyone's like, what the hell
- 7:04does that mean? So they have made a comment on
- 7:07Instagram addressing this. They wrote.
- 7:10We appreciate everyone who has taken the time to share their
- 7:12thoughts. Yes, Halo Beauty has officially
- 7:15parted ways with Tati Westbrook and we're moving forward with a
- 7:18renewed focus on clean, ethical beauty.
- 7:20Our beloved supplements are here to support your Wellness
- 7:22journey, and we're excited to add new products that align with
- 7:25our commitment to quality and transparency.
- 7:28Thank you for being here and sharing your input.
- 7:30It truly means a lot to us. More details about our new
- 7:33direction are coming soon. So stay attuned.
- 7:36OK. Well, I think it's interesting
- 7:38that they said that they are continuing with the supplements
- 7:42because again, like, if that was just like Tati's baby.
- 7:47And it just makes me sad for her.
- 7:49I don't think Halo Beauty is going to succeed at all without
- 7:51Tati. But it just makes me sad that
- 7:53this has been like ripped away from her.
- 7:55It feels amid all the litigation.
- 7:58All right, And the last story that I have for you guys is the
- 8:01crumble Cookie subreddit is going viral because it's so
- 8:06unhinged. So over the last few days,
- 8:08Twitter and TikTok have been blowing up with people
- 8:11discovering the subreddit for Crumble cookie.
- 8:13Now this is like the low stakes, insane Internet petty drama that
- 8:19like we live for. Like This is why we have the
- 8:22Internet. I love this shit.
- 8:25So there are 77,000 members in this subreddit and every single
- 8:31day people are posting in there just ripping crumble to shreds
- 8:35while also consistently buying and eating crumble.
- 8:40Like these people just spies crumble with every ounce of
- 8:44their being, but they still have it like every single week.
- 8:47It's so funny and they take it so seriously.
- 8:50Like they're so passionate about these cookies.
- 8:53They take their commitment to like being crumble cookies #1
- 8:57hater like so, so seriously. So OK, the example that started
- 9:02to go viral that like kicked off this discussion, it's actually
- 9:05from a month ago. Somebody posted in capital
- 9:08letters. Are you fucking kidding me?
- 9:12And then it goes, has crumble lost their fucking minds?
- 9:15An entire week of only pies. This is fucking stupid.
- 9:20Oh my fucking days. And it's a screenshot from like,
- 9:24basically, I guess actually it's going to be like next week,
- 9:27Thanksgiving week. It's going to be instead of like
- 9:30new cookies, you know, the cookies of the week.
- 9:32It's going to be pies of the week because it's like
- 9:34Thanksgiving. I should also note that this
- 9:36post is tagged as a spoiler. So on Reddit, if you're posting,
- 9:39I don't know about like ATV show or something, you can tag
- 9:42something as a spoiler so that people won't read it.
- 9:45It's tagged as a spoiler, I guess because it's spoiling the
- 9:49fact that like the reveal for Thanksgiving week is pies.
- 9:52It's so funny, it's so serious. So the tweet that accompanied
- 9:56this screenshot that started to go viral and then like I said,
- 9:59it's been brought to TikTok and it's like become this whole like
- 10:01cultural thing online. Latest obsession is the crumble
- 10:05cookie subreddit. Everyone on there hates the
- 10:07cookies but they still try them all every week.
- 10:11They're the most pissed off people on the planet.
- 10:14And then one of the top replies someone wrote.
- 10:16I worked for Crumbles corporate team and I am not joking when I
- 10:19tell you they had to basically take away the CEO's phone
- 10:22because he was addicted to doom scrolling this subreddit.
- 10:25He almost fired an entire department because someone
- 10:28leaked a cookie lineup. I actually believe this to an
- 10:31extent. I think it happens with
- 10:33influencers with podcasters when they get like a dedicated
- 10:36subreddit. I know it is common that you
- 10:39just get like obsessed actually. Oh my God who talked about this?
- 10:44There was a podcaster fairly recently who talked about being
- 10:48addicted to reading their Reddit, I forget who ANYWAYS.
- 10:51But yeah, like I think it's common that you get kind of like
- 10:53addicted to reading. I mean, I'm like addicted to
- 10:56reading our YouTube comments. Like I open the YouTube comments
- 11:00like 100 times a day. And that is not anywhere close
- 11:03to having like a dedicated subreddits.
- 11:05Like, I can't even imagine what that would feel like.
- 11:07And it's not like you're addicted to the validation.
- 11:09You're just like, it's like you for me at least.
- 11:12Like I feel at an extreme sense of anxiety if I don't like
- 11:16understand how people are perceiving the content that I'm
- 11:20putting out at any given time. So it like feeds that addiction.
- 11:25It like calms me down. It's like I feel like a spike of
- 11:27anxiety when I remember the YouTube comments multiple times
- 11:31a day. I'm like, oh, I haven't checked
- 11:32it in like an hour. And then I'll open it and it's
- 11:34like, OK. Even if it's a bad comment, even
- 11:36if I've received like backlash, at least I know, you know, I can
- 11:40imagine that if you have a dedicated subreddit with that
- 11:43many people constantly posting about like your company, your
- 11:46content, whatever, like, it would become an addiction.
- 11:49OK, so this feedback has obviously made it back to the
- 11:53subreddit and they've been talking about it.
- 11:56And what I think is really interesting about this is like
- 11:59hundreds of people in the subreddit are now talking about
- 12:03why they participate in the subreddit.
- 12:05And it's for all the reasons that you would kind of that
- 12:09would come to mind, right? Like that you would expect
- 12:11people are being so honest. Like some of them are like, I
- 12:13literally haven't had crumble cookies in like a year, but I'm
- 12:16obsessed with like the drama in this subreddit.
- 12:18I love like bitching. I love being a hater.
- 12:22I love consuming negativity. And to hear this many people
- 12:26being so honest about why they participate in like, essentially
- 12:31a snark Reddit, it's so fascinating.
- 12:34I don't know if there are many other corners of the Internet
- 12:37where people would be willing to be so open about that.
- 12:39And Geordie and I actually did a deep dive into like the
- 12:43psychology behind Stark Reddits last year.
- 12:45So definitely go back and listen to that episode if you're
- 12:47interested. But a lot of what we found just
- 12:50came down to the fact that like being a bit of a hater and
- 12:54consuming that kind of negativity.
- 12:56Like it makes people feel better about their lives.
- 13:00It makes people feel more connected to each other because
- 13:03you have this like common enemy. Me describing Crumble Cookie as
- 13:08somebody's like common enemy is insane, but you know what I
- 13:11mean? It fosters a sense of connection
- 13:15and it kind of it's it's like why we love watching like
- 13:17housewives or reality TV, right? It's like you love the drama,
- 13:21you love the fighting like you love.
- 13:23There's just something kind of like exhilarating about that,
- 13:27like humans have a negativity bias, most of us.
- 13:30And so it it kind of confirms that for us, like being involved
- 13:36in like a hater esque community. So yeah, I do recommend I'm, I
- 13:41fear that the subreddit will change now because it's going
- 13:44viral for this, but I do recommend reading it.
- 13:48It is really funny. It's like low stakes and you
- 13:51know, I am on my journey to try and crumble cookie.
- 13:55You guys know, like when the crumble cookie Australia thing
- 13:58happened a few months ago, I literally lost my mind that I
- 14:01didn't get a chance to try it. And then obviously I ended up
- 14:04being grateful because it turned out those cookies were on a
- 14:06plane for like 3 days. But Crumble is coming to
- 14:09Australia in 2025 and I am so excited.
- 14:12And I know there are very mixed opinions.
- 14:15And Australia also has, I feel like this is maybe not as well
- 14:18known, but Australia has like an insane baked goods culture.
- 14:22My brother was actually saying because my brother's been like
- 14:25living with us in Australia. He's been doing his working
- 14:27holiday visa here. He was saying, you know, I've
- 14:29never been anywhere, I don't think in the world that is as
- 14:33obsessed with giant oversized cookies the way that Sydney is.
- 14:38Like every single cafe you go to, there's a million amazing
- 14:41baked goods and like giant cookies are always there.
- 14:44So I actually think it might end up being kind of like when
- 14:47Starbucks tried to come here and it didn't really work because we
- 14:50have such strong coffee culture, such strong cafe culture.
- 14:54We already have a very strong, like giant cookie culture.
- 14:57We already have a very strong like baked goods culture here.
- 15:01So it'll be interesting to see what happens when they come
- 15:05here. But I am like dying like I just
- 15:08need to try it. I just need to try it.
- 15:10All right guys, that's it for today.
- 15:13I feel like I'm delirious. Thank you so much for listening

- 15:28tomorrow and I will talk to you on Monday.
- 15:30Bye.
