- 0:19Speaker 1: of story Telling by Julia Darrow Cowles the Story of David.
- 0:27Speaker 1: More than two thousand years ago, there was a great
- 0:30Speaker 1: battle in the land of Palestine. At that time, Saul
- 0:34Speaker 1: was king over Israel, and the battle was fought between
- 0:38Speaker 1: the Israelites and the Philistines, their enemies. Now, the Israelites
- 0:43Speaker 1: worshiped God or Jehovah, while the Philistines worshiped images of
- 0:48Speaker 1: wood and stone. And the Philistines stood on the mountain
- 0:52Speaker 1: on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain
- 0:55Speaker 1: on the other side, and the ravine was between them.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And as the armies were drawing up for battle, there
- 1:03Speaker 1: stood out from the ranks of the Philistines a champion
- 1:06Speaker 1: named Goliath. He was a giant and stature, and he
- 1:10Speaker 1: was clothed in a corsult of scales, with a helmet
- 1:13Speaker 1: of bronze upon his head. His spear was like a
- 1:16Speaker 1: weaver's beam, and a shield bearer went before him, and
- 1:21Speaker 1: Goliath stood and cried to the people of Israel, I
- 1:24Speaker 1: have come forth to defy the armies of Israel. Choose
- 1:28Speaker 1: ye a man who shall come and fight with me.
- 1:31Speaker 1: If he slays me, then will the Philistines be your servants.
- 1:36Speaker 1: But if I slay him, then shall ye be the
- 1:39Speaker 1: servants of the Philistines. Then were the Israelites dismayed, And
- 1:44Speaker 1: no man dare go forth to fight with Goliath. Every
- 1:48Speaker 1: night and every morning for forty days, Goliath came forth
- 1:52Speaker 1: and challenged the armies of Israel, and no man dare
- 1:55Speaker 1: go forth to fight him. At the same time, away
- 2:00Speaker 1: off among the hills of Bethlehem, there was a young
- 2:03Speaker 1: man named David who was tending his father's sheep. He
- 2:07Speaker 1: was a shepherd, lad but ruddy, and of a beautiful appearance.
- 2:11Speaker 1: His father's name was Jesse. Now Jesse's three older sons
- 2:15Speaker 1: were in the army of Saul, but David, the youngest,
- 2:19Speaker 1: cared for the sheep. He loved the country about Bethlehem,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and he had many beautiful thoughts while watching over the
- 2:27Speaker 1: sheep that he loved. But one day his father called
- 2:31Speaker 1: him away from the sheep pasture and sent him to
- 2:34Speaker 1: see his brothers and to bring back a message from them,
- 2:37Speaker 1: for he was anxious about their welfare, and he gave
- 2:41Speaker 1: him parched corn and ten loaves as a gift for them.
- 2:44Speaker 1: So David journeyed to where his brothers were, and when
- 2:48Speaker 1: he reached them, the armies were drawn up, the Philistines
- 2:52Speaker 1: on one mountain and the Israelites on the other, with
- 2:55Speaker 1: the ravine between. And as David reached the place, he
- 3:00Speaker 1: saw Goliath coming forth to challenge the army of Israel,
- 3:04Speaker 1: as he had done for forty days. And when David
- 3:08Speaker 1: heard Goliath's words, he saw that all the army of
- 3:11Speaker 1: Israel was dismayed, for he was filled with indignation, and
- 3:15Speaker 1: he asked, who is this philistine that he should defy
- 3:19Speaker 1: the armies of the Living God. And David's words were
- 3:23Speaker 1: repeated to Saul, and Saul sent for David, and David
- 3:27Speaker 1: told Saul that he would go forth and fight with Goliath.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Then said Saul, but thou art but a youth, and
- 3:35Speaker 1: this is a man of war. Then David answered, I
- 3:39Speaker 1: have slain with my hands both a lion and a
- 3:42Speaker 1: bear when they came to destroy a lamb of my flock.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And I can also slay this philistine. For Jehovah, who
- 3:50Speaker 1: delivered me out of the paw of the lion and
- 3:52Speaker 1: of the bear, will deliver me out of the hand
- 3:55Speaker 1: of this philistine. And Saul said to David, go and
- 4:00Speaker 1: Jehovah be with you, and he would have put his
- 4:04Speaker 1: armor upon David, but David refused it, and taking his
- 4:07Speaker 1: staff in his hand, he chose five smooth stones out
- 4:11Speaker 1: of the brook and put them in the pocket of
- 4:13Speaker 1: his shepherd's bag, which he wore. Then, with his sling
- 4:18Speaker 1: in his hand, he advanced to meet Goliath. But when
- 4:22Speaker 1: Goliath saw him, he exclaimed, am I a dog, that
- 4:27Speaker 1: thou comest to me with a staff? Come on then,
- 4:30Speaker 1: and I will give thy flesh to the fowls of
- 4:33Speaker 1: the heavens and to the beasts of the field. And
- 4:37Speaker 1: David answered, thou comest to me with a sword and
- 4:41Speaker 1: with a spear. But I come to thee in the
- 4:43Speaker 1: name of Jehovah of Hosts, the God of the armies
- 4:47Speaker 1: of Israel, whom thou hast defied this day. Will Jehovah
- 4:52Speaker 1: deliver thee into my hand, and all the earth shall
- 4:55Speaker 1: know that Israel has a god. And David put his
- 4:59Speaker 1: hand into his bag, and drew forth a stone, and
- 5:03Speaker 1: put it into his sling, and he slung it, and
- 5:05Speaker 1: it struck the Philistine in the forehead, and he fell
- 5:09Speaker 1: on his face to the earth. And the army of
- 5:12Speaker 1: Israel arose and shouted, and the Philistines became the servants
- 5:16Speaker 1: of Israel, and great honors were heaped upon David. Some
- 5:22Speaker 1: years after this, at the death of Saul, David became
- 5:25Speaker 1: king of Israel, but he never forgot his days upon
- 5:28Speaker 1: the hills of Bethlehem, when he tended his father's sheep,
- 5:32Speaker 1: and he was called the Shepherd King. After he had
- 5:37Speaker 1: become king, David wrote many beautiful songs and psalms, and
- 5:42Speaker 1: one of the most beautiful of them all is the
- 5:45Speaker 1: twenty third Psalm, which shows that even when all the
- 5:49Speaker 1: glory and honor of being a king were his, he
- 5:52Speaker 1: loved to think of himself as one of the sheep
- 5:55Speaker 1: over whom the Lord watched, as a shepherd. End of
