- 2:48Speaker 3: So can we all have adjectives, please?
- 2:52Speaker 2: What has yours been? Sleepy. Does that make Greg bashful?
- 2:59Speaker 12: We're like melding the Spice Girls and the Seven Dwarves
- 3:01Speaker 12: into some horrible band.
- 3:03Speaker 8: I think at one point I was old Greg.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I want some baileys a little kiss you know the
- 3:11Speaker 3: midget cover band maybe there could be like a midget
- 3:14Speaker 3: Spice Girl tribute.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Oh my god there probably is it's a scary.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Thing extra Spice or I don't know extra Spice.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Well you know Spice Girls also changed the lives of
- 3:24Speaker 2: many transvestites around the world I'm sure that it.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Made them want to stop oh they stopped doing it
- 3:31Speaker 3: I'm hanging up my tights no more.
- 3:34Speaker 2: All right.
- 3:35Speaker 12: We and the Spice Girls are coming to you live
- 3:37Speaker 12: via digital recording from the Alley Theater. Thank you, Sterling,
- 3:40Speaker 12: for bringing us here this week.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yep, yep.
- 3:44Speaker 12: To do a little intro here with a geek activity,
- 3:47Speaker 12: I have something, and I wanted to throw it out there,
- 3:49Speaker 12: and I want to see what your thoughts are on
- 3:50Speaker 12: this idea. I'm assuming I'm the only one that's seen this.
- 3:53Speaker 12: It's just come out. This week, I watched Fright Night 2,
- 3:57Speaker 12: colon New Blood.
- 3:59Speaker 8: Is this a colon?
- 4:01Speaker 12: I don't know if it's officially colon, because again, when
- 4:04Speaker 12: you look it up, it's different. In the IMDb, it
- 4:08Speaker 12: doesn't have it. On the box, it has it. I
- 4:10Speaker 12: think in the end credits, it does. throws that text
- 4:13Speaker 12: in there but imdb doesn't even list it as part
- 4:15Speaker 12: of the title it's just fright night two okay.
- 4:19Speaker 2: So let's let's return to the basic issue which is
- 4:20Speaker 2: there's a fright night.
- 4:21Speaker 12: Two that's the thing up until the week before i
- 4:24Speaker 12: had no idea they were even making a fright night.
- 4:26Speaker 10: Two this is based on the reboot then right.
- 4:29Speaker 12: Yes sort of no oh that's how this goes i
- 4:33Speaker 12: assumed it was a sequel to the one that just
- 4:35Speaker 12: came out recently with colin what's his face And truthfully.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I didn't hate that.
- 4:40Speaker 12: Like, I'm such a fan of the original, I expected
- 4:43Speaker 12: to hate the remake. Turns out it's not bad. Like,
- 4:45Speaker 12: it's pretty entertaining. There's some cheesy graphics, but that was
- 4:48Speaker 12: because they were trying to catch in on that 3D thing.
- 4:51Speaker 12: You throw that out, and it's actually pretty well put together.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Two, I can't.
- 4:57Speaker 12: Even get to the movie itself because I'm too busy
- 5:01Speaker 12: being annoyed by the setup. I've never seen them within...
- 5:06Speaker 12: I mean, it came out last year. This one is
- 5:09Speaker 12: almost like a reboot of the reboot. It's like they're
- 5:13Speaker 12: taking the same characters, but none.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Of that stuff happened. It's like we're starting over again.
- 5:19Speaker 12: I've never seen this in a span of time. But again,
- 5:25Speaker 12: it's not like they just said, oh, it's another Fright Night.
- 5:27Speaker 12: It's Fright Night 2. They're billing it as a sequel. But,
- 5:31Speaker 12: I mean, it's halfway into the movie, and I'm like,
- 5:33Speaker 12: why is he not acknowledging that this went down last year,
- 5:37Speaker 12: you know? It's like, because the girlfriend's, like, mad at him,
- 5:40Speaker 12: and I'm like, is this because of the, you know,
- 5:42Speaker 12: you got almost.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Killed by a vampire?
- 5:43Speaker 12: Like, I'm trying to piece together the continuation story. It's
- 5:47Speaker 12: halfway into the movie before I realize there isn't one.
- 5:49Speaker 12: They really just started from scratch and started over, but
- 5:53Speaker 12: they're keeping, like, all the characters have.
- 5:55Speaker 2: The same names. It's more or less the same relationship.
- 5:58Speaker 2: You've still got Charlie.
- 5:59Speaker 12: You've still got the girlfriend.
- 6:01Speaker 2: You've still got Evil Ed being annoying. Everybody has their place.
- 6:06Speaker 12: Here's the big thing, and I swear this is probably
- 6:08Speaker 12: the pitch that got this movie made. Jerry Dandridge is
- 6:12Speaker 12: spelled with a G, and it's a girl.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Whoa.
- 6:16Speaker 2: That's it. That's the spin on it.
- 6:19Speaker 12: Which, again, when I saw that in the trailer, I went, Okay,
- 6:22Speaker 12: I assumed they were trying to do the reboot of
- 6:24Speaker 12: the sequel the first time around. Because the second one,
- 6:27Speaker 12: the main vampire is a girl. And it's actually the
- 6:30Speaker 12: character from... No, it's a whole different character. But it's
- 6:35Speaker 12: Regina Dandridge. And it's actually the sister of Chris Sarandon's
- 6:38Speaker 12: character in the first one. That's in the 80s movies.
- 6:42Speaker 12: So I thought, okay, there's a girl vampire. They're just
- 6:44Speaker 12: kind of doing a loose interpretation of it.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Nope.
- 6:47Speaker 12: They do almost the exact same story. Like to the
- 6:50Speaker 12: point of he sees in the window and this time
- 6:54Speaker 12: it's a chick with another chick that he sees in
- 6:56Speaker 12: the window. And then she screams and like, it's, it's
- 6:59Speaker 12: set up the same, only done really badly. Like it's just,
- 7:03Speaker 12: and it, and it seems rushed like everything. Like there's
- 7:05Speaker 12: no time to feel any of that.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Momentum that you do in the first one.
- 7:10Speaker 12: And, and no, like the, the fact that everybody sort
- 7:12Speaker 12: of doesn't believe it, like immediately it just goes right
- 7:15Speaker 12: down the next scene and they move on.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And like, there's nothing to it really.
- 7:19Speaker 12: It just seems so rushed and thrown together, which it
- 7:21Speaker 12: was when you're making this sequel straight to DVD movie.
- 7:25Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 7:26Speaker 12: I was like, why have you ever heard of anything
- 7:28Speaker 12: like that?
- 7:30Speaker 2: And why the hell?
- 7:31Speaker 12: I mean, I guess just the cash grab on the
- 7:33Speaker 12: name is the only reason. But I mean, the real
- 7:36Speaker 12: reason is they set the whole thing. This is the
- 7:38Speaker 12: only difference aside from the girl vampire.
- 7:41Speaker 2: It's in Romania.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 12: And I'm like, well, the reason it's set in Romania
- 7:44Speaker 12: is because it's cheap to shoot in Romania.
- 7:46Speaker 2: It costs about $ 12. Yeah, it's cheap to shoot in Romania. So,
- 7:52Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 7:52Speaker 12: What are your thoughts on this idea? You don't have
- 7:55Speaker 12: to see the movie. Just that blows your mind.
- 7:57Speaker 10: I thought they really were doing a part two, though.
- 8:00Speaker 10: I thought they really were in talks of doing a
- 8:02Speaker 10: second one.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Wouldn't you think they would? I mean, it made pretty
- 8:04Speaker 2: decent money.
- 8:05Speaker 10: I want to say I read that recently that it
- 8:07Speaker 10: was still happening.
- 8:07Speaker 9: It's a count already.
- 8:08Speaker 10: So, how did.
- 8:10Speaker 2: How did this straight-to-DVD nonsense come about?
- 8:12Speaker 10: And Fright Night's spelled exactly the same.
- 8:14Speaker 2: No silences.
- 8:17Speaker 10: It's not spelled with a P-H.
- 8:20Speaker 9: It's this whole, you know, reboot, sequel, rehash, industrial thing
- 8:25Speaker 9: run amok.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 9: My God, we'll just throw it on video.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 8:29Speaker 9: Now, and forget about promoting it. Forget about letting anybody
- 8:32Speaker 9: know this exists. What's the point in any of that stuff?
- 8:34Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 8:34Speaker 11: The whole red box getting out a knockoff before the
- 8:39Speaker 11: original comes out thing is almost sickening. The characters almost
- 8:44Speaker 11: look like, especially with the animated stuff.
- 8:46Speaker 10: I remember the brave.
- 8:48Speaker 11: Yeah, they'll have the little girl with the red hair. Yeah,
- 8:52Speaker 11: I mean, it's... It's ridiculous now. It's all designed so that.
- 8:59Speaker 8: Back in the.
- 9:00Speaker 13: Day, that's what Kmart's video section was for.
- 9:05Speaker 11: It's designed so that Grandma thinks it's the one that
- 9:09Speaker 11: the kid gets.
- 9:10Speaker 2: That kid loves the Fright Night movies.
- 9:13Speaker 13: That's why I've still said for the longest time, if
- 9:15Speaker 13: Lucas put out the.
- 9:17Speaker 8: Star Wars Christmas special.
- 9:18Speaker 2: You'd sell them.
- 9:20Speaker 13: Every grandma that has a grandchild that's in the Star
- 9:23Speaker 13: Wars would buy that.
- 9:28Speaker 11: Why not get the cash for it? People see it anyway.
- 9:30Speaker 11: People know you made it. They're going to search for it.
- 9:33Speaker 11: Just make the money off of it.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I don't know. That's the thing.
- 9:36Speaker 12: I couldn't even get to the movie itself to be like,
- 9:40Speaker 12: I mean, it's not great. As I said, it just
- 9:43Speaker 12: seems thrown together, but I'm just like, I couldn't even
- 9:46Speaker 12: get to the point of making a real judgment on
- 9:48Speaker 12: it because I sat there half the time going, wait,
- 9:51Speaker 12: why the hell are you not talking about this shit
- 9:53Speaker 12: that just happened? Because you've got a two on the end. Obviously,
- 9:57Speaker 12: it's a continuation of the story, or why wouldn't you
- 10:00Speaker 12: just say Fright Night colon, give it another title, put
- 10:03Speaker 12: new characters in there.
- 10:04Speaker 2: I don't even care.
- 10:05Speaker 12: If you want to do a bad, make it a series.
- 10:07Speaker 12: Make it like the American Pie series kind of thing.
- 10:10Speaker 12: Just do another vampire movie every year with Fright Night
- 10:13Speaker 12: slapped on the front.
- 10:14Speaker 2: I wouldn't like that, but I can understand it. It
- 10:16Speaker 2: makes sense.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Maybe having a two on it doesn't necessarily make it
- 10:19Speaker 3: a sequel it's like I've got two pairs of black
- 10:23Speaker 3: jeans and you know here's one pair and here's the
- 10:25Speaker 3: second one they're both kind of.
- 10:27Speaker 11: The same or maybe it's T-O-O see if it was.
- 10:33Speaker 12: If they went the teen wolf route I'd be okay
- 10:35Speaker 12: with it I'd be like well they.
- 10:36Speaker 13: Got a point maybe it's like Lucio Fulci's Zombie 2
- 10:39Speaker 13: maybe that's it.
- 10:41Speaker 12: They released it in Romania and it made sense but
- 10:44Speaker 12: here I don't know It was just really frustrating. I
- 10:49Speaker 12: think they're still crediting Tom Holland as like a characters,
- 10:54Speaker 12: but like, yeah, they've just turned it over to people
- 10:56Speaker 12: who don't give her access now.
- 10:58Speaker 2: And it's really, that's the thing.
- 11:01Speaker 12: I wouldn't even care if it was a reboot of
- 11:03Speaker 12: the second one or something, or even a whole new story.
- 11:05Speaker 12: I just don't understand the keeping the same characters and
- 11:09Speaker 12: not acknowledging the last movie.
- 11:11Speaker 10: It just doesn't make any sense. Very strange.
- 11:13Speaker 8: It's groundhog day.
- 11:15Speaker 11: Frighten at your groundhog day.
- 11:16Speaker 2: I guess.
- 11:17Speaker 12: That's kind of, I mean, really, it's like they just
- 11:19Speaker 12: start over again like it never happened.
- 11:21Speaker 2: And it kicks off with Sonny and Cher. It was
- 11:23Speaker 2: the strangest thing ever.
- 11:27Speaker 4: All right.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I say with that, we take a break and come
- 11:29Speaker 2: back with this week's movie. The Fortune Queen of New
- 11:55Speaker 2: Orleans is brushing her cat in her place.
- 12:01Speaker 14: On the back seat were scratches from the marks of men,
- 12:05Speaker 14: her fortune she had won. Couldn't see through the tinted glass.
- 12:14Speaker 9: She said, home James, he hit the gas.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I followed her to some darkened room.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Took my money, she said, I'll be waiting.
- 12:33Speaker 12: She told me more about me.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Than I knew myself.
- 12:56Speaker 12: She dealt two cards, a queen and a three, and
- 13:00Speaker 12: mumbled some words that were so strange to me.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Submit it, folks.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yes, that's all it takes to get our refreshment counter

- 15:01Speaker 4: Jack Bailey, Art.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Baker, and many others.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Ed Johnson of the New York News wrote, At long last,
- 15:10Speaker 4: I have seen a horror show even scarier than advertised.
- 15:15Speaker 4: A horror show strictly in a class by itself. Give
- 15:20Speaker 4: it thrills you want, thrills you'll get, when you see Dr.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Satan's shrieks in the night.
- 15:27Speaker 12: I probably wouldn't want another lame, terrible, and he's going
- 15:33Speaker 12: to be like, Guys, we.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Have a new one. I don't know why David hasn't
- 15:37Speaker 3: sent it.
- 15:37Speaker 12: He doesn't like your show, and he's trying to sabotage.
- 15:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 9: Yeah, true.
- 15:42Speaker 10: If you send it over, I'll play it. Hey, guys.

- 18:54Speaker 2: Don't go out there.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Will kill you.
- 18:58Speaker 7: Where is he?
- 19:00Speaker 2: The medicine said all the dead people were dead, but
- 19:02Speaker 2: he lied.
- 19:03Speaker 5: I'm going after them.
- 19:04Speaker 13: Get up!
- 19:12Speaker 1: Run!
- 19:12Speaker 10: Satan's Little Helper.
- 19:17Speaker 7: THE END.
- 20:07Speaker 2: All right, we're back.
- 20:08Speaker 12: And it is time to get into this week's sofa
- 20:11Speaker 12: theater feature. This week's movie of choice is Satan's Little Helper.
- 20:17Speaker 8: Why did you sigh at the beginning of that?
- 20:19Speaker 12: Because it's such a wonderful movie.
- 20:22Speaker 3: I didn't have any choice.
- 20:23Speaker 9: There was no choice involved.
- 20:24Speaker 2: The year is 2004.
- 20:25Speaker 12: The director, Jeb Lieberman.
- 20:29Speaker 8: Which was the scariest part of this.
- 20:32Speaker 12: The plot, according to IMDb, it's very succinct, but yet accurate.
- 20:39Speaker 12: A naive young boy unknowingly becomes the pawn of a
- 20:42Speaker 12: serial killer.
- 20:43Speaker 2: They got a point. Spoiler alert.
- 20:46Speaker 12: This is a cinema classic, and we do not want
- 20:49Speaker 12: to ruin it for you. There are some big twists
- 20:51Speaker 12: along the way. You better go watch it for yourself.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Suckers.
- 20:54Speaker 8: Yeah, stop it now. Stop the show now.
- 20:57Speaker 5: Suckers.
- 20:58Speaker 3: I just want to say up front, I was a
- 20:59Speaker 3: little bit disappointed because Satan's Helpers, that was the name
- 21:03Speaker 3: of the bike gang in Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
- 21:05Speaker 10: I thought this was going.
- 21:06Speaker 3: To be about their adventure.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Their own spinoff movie.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:09Speaker 2: And it wasn't.
- 21:11Speaker 3: It wasn't.
- 21:12Speaker 8: That would be a good movie.
- 21:13Speaker 17: I was really sad about that, too.
- 21:16Speaker 12: All right, so it is very Halloween themed. It is
- 21:21Speaker 12: fitting of this season that we're in. So we'll continue
- 21:25Speaker 12: to chow down on this candy corn we got here.
- 21:28Speaker 17: It's just me at this point.
- 21:30Speaker 2: I can't stop. I have a problem.
- 21:33Speaker 12: Where would you like to begin with Santa's Little Helper?
- 21:37Speaker 8: That's Bart's dog.
- 21:38Speaker 2: You mean Satan's.
- 21:39Speaker 12: I actually like Bart's dog better, actually.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I feel like such a dork for mentioning this, but
- 21:47Speaker 2: they make that joke at some point. They take the
- 21:49Speaker 2: dog to obedience school and she's like, next dog up
- 21:52Speaker 2: is Satan's little helper. It's like, yeah.
- 21:58Speaker 13: I saw about 15 minutes of this movie, because Dave
- 22:00Speaker 13: came over before, and he's like, oh, you're watching this?
- 22:02Speaker 2: And he goes, I don't know, you don't need to
- 22:03Speaker 2: watch the whole thing.
- 22:04Speaker 8: I said, don't bother.
- 22:05Speaker 13: And so I just basically, I skipped.
- 22:06Speaker 2: I threw it out there first.
- 22:08Speaker 13: I skipped every 10 minutes. And it didn't make a difference, really, actually. Well, granted,
- 22:13Speaker 13: I haven't seen it in its entirety, but I got
- 22:16Speaker 13: the basic. You got the gist of it. Yeah, I
- 22:18Speaker 13: got the gist of it, and I think Dave put
- 22:20Speaker 13: it best. He described it as like, A bad episode
- 22:23Speaker 13: of Goosebumps.
- 22:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:24Speaker 2: It kind of is.
- 22:26Speaker 9: You know, that's the weird thing.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Are you afraid of the dark?
- 22:28Speaker 9: I started watching this movie, and I'm thinking, I didn't
- 22:30Speaker 9: even look it up or anything, because there it was
- 22:31Speaker 9: on Amazon. I was going to watch this, and I'm thinking, well,
- 22:34Speaker 9: this is probably something that you dug up from the 80s,
- 22:37Speaker 9: or maybe the 90s. And for a while, it was.
- 22:40Speaker 1: I was like, okay.
- 22:41Speaker 9: And I started noticing the make of the truck that
- 22:44Speaker 9: Amanda Plummer's cruising in. I said, that's not that old.
- 22:46Speaker 9: And I look. It's 2004.
- 22:48Speaker 10: But it looks like early 90s.
- 22:50Speaker 9: And it's competently shot on what seems to be video,
- 22:55Speaker 9: like a Goosebumps show would be. I mean, there's a
- 22:57Speaker 9: professional crew and the lighting and everything's there. But then
- 23:00Speaker 9: listen to.
- 23:01Speaker 1: The music, man.
- 23:02Speaker 9: It's like 1987 score on a 1990 video production that
- 23:08Speaker 9: got made in 2004. So it was just so weird
- 23:11Speaker 9: to watch this thing. And there's Amanda Plummer, who's, you know,
- 23:15Speaker 9: Pretty legit actress I like a lot.
- 23:18Speaker 8: I think she was high the entire movie.
- 23:21Speaker 17: I mean, she talked about being high.
- 23:24Speaker 2: She's very high-strung.
- 23:26Speaker 9: She's always got a weird vibe to her performances.
- 23:29Speaker 3: I didn't like her.
- 23:31Speaker 9: She's slumming in this one.
- 23:32Speaker 12: She's not likable in anything. She's good if you cast
- 23:36Speaker 12: her in the right role, but she's never really a
- 23:38Speaker 12: likable character.
- 23:39Speaker 8: She was fun in So I Married an Axe Murderer.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Well, yeah, where she was the axe murderer. Excuse me, spoilers.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Ah, no.
- 23:46Speaker 2: But seriously, though, she had some of that same vibe, though,
- 23:49Speaker 2: of just ultra high, strong. I kept thinking while she
- 23:53Speaker 2: was trying to do stuff for the boyfriend who came
- 23:56Speaker 2: over and be a good... I kept thinking of the
- 23:58Speaker 2: scene with her and Mike Myers where she's like, Oh,
- 24:01Speaker 2: you sure you don't want me to make you breakfast?
- 24:02Speaker 2: Like silver dollar pancakes and sausages and all this other stuff.
- 24:06Speaker 2: And then she winds up just pouring him a bowl
- 24:07Speaker 2: of cereal and watching him while he eats it. Like
- 24:09Speaker 2: that was the vibe I got from her the entire time.
- 24:12Speaker 11: She was, it really threw me off. She was, like
- 24:17Speaker 11: there was bad acting in it. There was plenty of
- 24:19Speaker 11: bad acting. But she, probably the most experienced person of
- 24:23Speaker 11: the cast, was probably the worst.
- 24:25Speaker 8: Person in the cast.
- 24:27Speaker 11: And she was just inappropriately loud sometimes and or inappropriately
- 24:34Speaker 11: she has no concept of what she was supposed to
- 24:36Speaker 11: be doing and i'm this is a nitpicky point because
- 24:39Speaker 11: it's there's plenty to be mad at about this film
- 24:42Speaker 11: um especially because there's parts of i mean this writer
- 24:46Speaker 11: the writer director no should know what he's doing by
- 24:49Speaker 11: now um and and obviously doesn't or is on drugs himself.
- 24:55Speaker 8: So... He took too much blue sunshine.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Speaking of nitpicking in the cast, I... Okay, we see
- 25:03Speaker 3: Amanda Plummer, we see her son, we see the husband.
- 25:06Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 25:07Speaker 3: I don't see how this gene pool created the hot
- 25:10Speaker 3: blonde girl.
- 25:12Speaker 10: How does this family actually exist?
- 25:14Speaker 17: The husband seemed a little too young.
- 25:17Speaker 10: For her in the first place.
- 25:17Speaker 11: Well, first of all, I don't think the mother or
- 25:19Speaker 11: father were Jewish, but the kid was clearly a Jewish kid.
- 25:22Speaker 8: Oh, man, did he not look like Ben Stein?
- 25:24Speaker 2: He had a bit of that Christmas story vibe going on,
- 25:26Speaker 2: like the Ralphie business.
- 25:28Speaker 13: Well, the whole thing, too, is like the kid, when
- 25:31Speaker 13: you first hear him delivering his dialogue... You can tell
- 25:36Speaker 13: it's an adult's dialogue. It's like the kids don't... For me,
- 25:40Speaker 13: it was just rubbing me the wrong way. That's how
- 25:42Speaker 13: an adult thinks kids talk versus that's how kids talk
- 25:44Speaker 13: sort of thing. But at the same time, this kid
- 25:47Speaker 13: seemed really intelligent and just very well-spoken, but yet he
- 25:52Speaker 13: doesn't realize he's hanging out with a serial killer.
- 25:55Speaker 2: There's a big question in this film. It rests on
- 25:58Speaker 2: that whole issue of gullibility, just how gullible... Like, exactly
- 26:02Speaker 2: how many times does the silent masked person have to
- 26:05Speaker 2: paw at the blonde girl before she realizes, hey, this
- 26:08Speaker 2: doesn't feel quite like my boyfriend.
- 26:10Speaker 3: But no, he was in character.
- 26:11Speaker 15: He was.
- 26:12Speaker 2: He's an actor. You should understand. Yeah, well, about that.
- 26:16Speaker 8: I love that I brought up that they're in acting school.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, no. That was fun for you, right, Sterling?
- 26:22Speaker 2: That was fun. Oh, yeah. I also love the fact
- 26:25Speaker 2: that he looked like he steps out of, like, again,
- 26:27Speaker 2: it looked like he was from, like, the early 90s
- 26:29Speaker 2: with his, like, with his, like... little hat and his
- 26:31Speaker 2: long grungy hair and everything um and it was great
- 26:35Speaker 2: i was like oh man it's about time i saw
- 26:36Speaker 2: a hero like that guy again like the skinny white
- 26:39Speaker 2: dude i'm gonna save the day but um with dad
- 26:42Speaker 2: issues needless to say but i don't know this films
- 26:45Speaker 2: like this the interesting thing to me watching them is
- 26:47Speaker 2: is your brain slips into that mode where you kind
- 26:50Speaker 2: of wind up tuning out or maybe this is just
- 26:53Speaker 2: me and you guys are different but you kind of
- 26:54Speaker 2: wind up tuning out the gross problems with the film
- 26:58Speaker 2: and like the huge faults. And you start saying things like, well,
- 27:01Speaker 2: that was nicely done. Or, oh, that was a well-delivered line. Or,
- 27:04Speaker 2: you know, this is actually a really creepy little, like
- 27:06Speaker 2: you start finding these little bits that you actually want
- 27:08Speaker 2: to try to be fair.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:09Speaker 17: I really just expected it to be so much worse.
- 27:11Speaker 17: My expectations were extremely low. So I liked, I thought
- 27:15Speaker 17: this movie was an enjoyable watch.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 27:19Speaker 12: Well, I was going to say, I'm kind of with
- 27:21Speaker 12: you halfway, Marlena. Like, halfway in, it was so dumb,
- 27:26Speaker 12: I was kind of having fun with it. Like, it
- 27:28Speaker 12: is like, it's one of those, they're just like, it's
- 27:30Speaker 12: so preposterous the way things are going down that I'm entertained.
- 27:34Speaker 12: And maybe it's along the same lines as watching Goosebumps. Like,
- 27:37Speaker 12: those are kind of fun, too.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Well, I mean, yeah, you have the main villain is basically, like,
- 27:41Speaker 2: he's not.
- 27:44Speaker 2: The description lists him as a serial killer, but really
- 27:46Speaker 2: he's like a supervillain. Like, he's strong enough to throw
- 27:49Speaker 2: a grown man through a window. He kills cops easily.
- 27:53Speaker 13: Well, ever since Halloween came out, all masked killers have
- 27:56Speaker 13: to be Mike Myers.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Well, but this guy is like, I mean, he's kind
- 28:01Speaker 2: of unbelievably, I mean, the thing is he's never given
- 28:04Speaker 2: a supernatural origin. Like, we're allowed to... to sort of
- 28:08Speaker 2: hint at one towards the end, but really, there's no
- 28:11Speaker 2: explanation given. He's just a guy who seems to be
- 28:13Speaker 2: able to kill everyone. You know, I liked that aspect.
- 28:17Speaker 12: I like that we have no introduction to him except
- 28:19Speaker 12: we come into the scene and he's killing somebody. And
- 28:22Speaker 12: it's pretty early in. It's like, I looked at it,
- 28:24Speaker 12: it's like 11 minutes in. He's dragging a body out
- 28:27Speaker 12: in bright daylight.
- 28:28Speaker 1: And I'm like.
- 28:28Speaker 12: I liked the absurdity of that. I liked where it
- 28:32Speaker 12: was going at that point. It goes horribly wrong, but
- 28:35Speaker 12: I liked the concept.
- 28:36Speaker 2: When they're at the party and she's wrapped up in
- 28:39Speaker 2: tape and no one seems to have noticed that she's
- 28:41Speaker 2: being held hostage. And he takes up a whole thing
- 28:44Speaker 2: of Drano and just pours it straight into the.
- 28:48Speaker 3: I wonder how the fine people at Drano thought about, hey,
- 28:51Speaker 3: that's product placement.
- 28:52Speaker 12: Oh no bad product well and then change the title
- 28:56Speaker 12: just a little well and then everyone walks up and
- 28:58Speaker 12: starts drinking it's like oh that's terrible and continues drinking
- 29:01Speaker 12: it like.
- 29:01Speaker 2: You know that's most punches there's a kind of there's
- 29:04Speaker 2: a kind of cartoon quality to it by the end
- 29:07Speaker 2: where you just abandoned any sort of any sort of
- 29:10Speaker 2: expectation of realism and that's actually one of the way
- 29:12Speaker 2: like that's another thing that sort of jumped out at
- 29:14Speaker 2: me that i actually kind of liked once i accepted
- 29:16Speaker 2: that I actually really found myself really liking the silent
- 29:20Speaker 2: acting the guy was doing like the thumbs up that
- 29:22Speaker 2: he would give I know I love that the.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Masks smile like every time he would do the double
- 29:28Speaker 3: thumb up with that smile.
- 29:31Speaker 2: This guy like there was something really cheesy but at
- 29:35Speaker 2: the same and it stopped being scary at a certain
- 29:38Speaker 2: point but then it became a little creepy again.
- 29:41Speaker 3: I was very disappointed that it actually was a mask.
- 29:45Speaker 3: I was kind of hoping... It wouldn't be, like, sure,
- 29:48Speaker 3: it looked like a mask, but it wasn't. I don't know.
- 29:51Speaker 3: Because whenever you put on the Jesus suit, it just
- 29:53Speaker 3: wasn't the same.
- 29:54Speaker 11: Oh, I had fun with the Jesus suit.
- 29:56Speaker 13: See, I think that's what took it over the edge.
- 29:59Speaker 17: I thought that part was hilarious.
- 30:01Speaker 11: I thought that the kids still, after everything. He's like, oh,
- 30:06Speaker 11: Jesus is going to show up in a Jesus mask,
- 30:08Speaker 11: and I'm going to.
- 30:09Speaker 12: Well, you have to keep in mind, Dougie's dumb as
- 30:12Speaker 12: a rock.
- 30:13Speaker 2: He's well-spoken, but dumb as a rock. Dougie's disturbed. Oh, massively.
- 30:18Speaker 3: I blame his mom.
- 30:19Speaker 2: His mom's also disturbed.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll make you a little devil suit. Yeah, you
- 30:23Speaker 3: can do that. It's fine.
- 30:24Speaker 2: And initially, there's like a bit where I was actually,
- 30:28Speaker 2: I think this is just poor acting on Dougie's part,
- 30:30Speaker 2: but like the scene where he first like, sees his
- 30:33Speaker 2: dad getting ripped open in front of him, I thought
- 30:35Speaker 2: he was laughing. I was just like, dude, when are
- 30:38Speaker 2: you going to realize?
- 30:40Speaker 12: Keep in mind, because I was sitting there going, man,
- 30:42Speaker 12: this kid is not very good.
- 30:44Speaker 2: He's made one other movie in his career.
- 30:48Speaker 12: Around that actually I think it was that same year
- 30:50Speaker 12: and it's a Todd Solans movie so that puts it
- 30:55Speaker 12: Todd Solans puts it all in perspective.
- 31:04Speaker 16: I'm going to pick up Jenna at the ferry she
- 31:07Speaker 16: came home to spend Halloween with her brother is that true.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Love or what?
- 31:12Speaker 16: Jenna's my girlfriend I'm going to marry her says he's
- 31:16Speaker 16: gonna marry her yeah i don't think they got up
- 31:20Speaker 16: to the word incest in the third grade yet you
- 31:22Speaker 16: said sex i said incest and don't be so snoopy
- 31:26Speaker 16: play a game she always takes dougie out on halloween
- 31:30Speaker 16: she doesn't want to break the tradition.
- 31:32Speaker 7: I know when jenna takes me we're gonna find seat
- 31:36Speaker 7: and i'm gonna show him what a good helper i.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Am by the way i i really um and i'm
- 31:42Speaker 3: the whole incest subplot.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Was killing me.
- 31:45Speaker 12: See, to me, that was creepier. You already get to
- 31:48Speaker 12: that a minute in, and I'm just like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 31:50Speaker 12: what kind of movie?
- 31:51Speaker 2: Slow down.
- 31:53Speaker 3: The thing that got me when you mentioned the dad
- 31:55Speaker 3: there was, okay, from the very beginning, it's established that
- 31:59Speaker 3: the kid has the hots for his hot blonde sister.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Who's obviously not part of the family.
- 32:04Speaker 3: And he wants to marry her, and she brings home
- 32:06Speaker 3: a guy, so he wants to kill him because she's...
- 32:10Speaker 3: The boyfriend is his competition. But the minute the hot
- 32:14Speaker 3: blonde daughter steps into the house, the mom's wanting to
- 32:18Speaker 3: dress her up as a slut. She's spanking her on
- 32:22Speaker 3: the ass when they're looking out the window. I think
- 32:25Speaker 3: that the mom is the real competition and ain't the boy.
- 32:29Speaker 3: And the thing is... The minute dad walks home, he
- 32:31Speaker 3: gets killed. The minute he walks through the door, he
- 32:34Speaker 3: gets killed. So we don't even have time to see
- 32:37Speaker 3: him fondle his daughter.
- 32:39Speaker 2: But it would have happened.
- 32:41Speaker 12: I mean, we've all noticed that she doesn't fit the
- 32:44Speaker 12: rest of the family. So maybe really she was sort
- 32:47Speaker 12: of brought in. And maybe it's okay that Dougie has
- 32:50Speaker 12: the hot tub.
- 32:50Speaker 8: No, no, no.
- 32:51Speaker 2: In that case, it's okay. It's more not okay, because
- 32:53Speaker 2: what we're talking about is not... What we're talking about
- 32:56Speaker 2: is an adopted child who then is adopted into a
- 32:59Speaker 2: molester family. Oh, yeah. Proceeds to regularly.
- 33:03Speaker 8: You will wear this slut costume.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Is that any clearer than everything else in this movie?
- 33:08Speaker 2: It's notable also that when she's first dressing up, she's like, well...
- 33:11Speaker 2: but I don't want him to see me this way. Like,
- 33:14Speaker 2: like she is so innocent acting. The thing is, she's
- 33:17Speaker 2: not bad.
- 33:18Speaker 12: And you, and it goes to show because she went
- 33:20Speaker 12: on to have a real career. Like she's in a
- 33:22Speaker 12: ton of TV work.
- 33:24Speaker 17: I was watching this and I was just like, her
- 33:26Speaker 17: acting isn't great in this movie, but she's very pretty.
- 33:29Speaker 17: And it's, there's a lot of room for improvement.
- 33:31Speaker 12: She's got potential because that's the other one I was
- 33:35Speaker 12: like Alex is horrible he's in one other film at
- 33:39Speaker 12: the time disappears so it's like you can see the two.
- 33:42Speaker 2: People that have a career are the ones that have.
- 33:45Speaker 12: Some acting skills they're not necessarily using it in this
- 33:47Speaker 12: movie but those two have like an actual career and
- 33:50Speaker 12: the other people are just really bad.
- 33:52Speaker 11: Actors one part I did like is Alex's father.
- 33:58Speaker 8: He's really gross. Like, you know, he's got the younger girlfriend.
- 34:03Speaker 2: That was an unexpected scene.
- 34:06Speaker 8: Yeah, he has that look about him.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Yeah, we had to work in some nudity.
- 34:10Speaker 11: If you were like a director and like, I've got
- 34:12Speaker 11: to find somebody creepy, that guy. And he does a
- 34:15Speaker 11: good job of being that. He could be a business man,
- 34:17Speaker 11: but he's also just gross. And I think that was
- 34:21Speaker 11: a pretty good job. And the guy does a good
- 34:22Speaker 11: job of being gross.
- 34:24Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 34:25Speaker 8: I'm just looking for highlights.
- 34:27Speaker 17: I feel like with the kid, they should have... I mean,
- 34:30Speaker 17: he should have been full-on clueless and stupid. He was
- 34:36Speaker 17: obviously disconnected. I don't think he was a sociopath, really,
- 34:41Speaker 17: per se.
- 34:41Speaker 2: But there's something.
- 34:43Speaker 17: He was just like... He wasn't fully developed. Children at
- 34:48Speaker 17: a very small age know the difference between extremely right
- 34:51Speaker 17: and extremely... Like, a two-year-old knows that murder is wrong.
- 34:55Speaker 8: It's almost like an autism that he has.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:58Speaker 8: That's why I blame his mom.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Because she was like, oh yeah, Satan's real.
- 35:02Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 35:02Speaker 12: Well, and the fact that she doesn't have any problems
- 35:05Speaker 12: with this video game as he's sitting back there going, tearing.
- 35:07Speaker 2: The guts out. This is awesome.
- 35:09Speaker 1: I'm like.
- 35:09Speaker 2: isn't every.
- 35:10Speaker 12: Other parent in the world going you can't play that
- 35:12Speaker 12: i know i was like she's way.
- 35:15Speaker 10: It almost felt like a propaganda piece to me like
- 35:17Speaker 10: good good especially when he started to pray because i
- 35:20Speaker 10: didn't know how it was going to end in i
- 35:21Speaker 10: was like oh my gosh if jesus comes and saves
- 35:23Speaker 10: him now this is definitely propaganda because i just felt
- 35:26Speaker 10: like it was almost like playing up that media fear
- 35:29Speaker 10: on video games it's like oh look here's an innocent
- 35:31Speaker 10: little kid playing a game and We're going to make
- 35:33Speaker 10: it to Devil and be pretty literal about it. But look,
- 35:36Speaker 10: he's emulating the game. And I'm making coins.
- 35:39Speaker 12: Because of the video game.
- 35:41Speaker 10: I was like, this ends with a happy ending because
- 35:43Speaker 10: he's turning to Jesus now. Oh, my gosh.
- 35:46Speaker 3: I almost felt like they could have put any video
- 35:48Speaker 3: game in front of him. Like, if it had been
- 35:50Speaker 3: a Jesus-themed video game, he would have been, ah. And, like,
- 35:53Speaker 3: they could have put, like, in, I don't know, Obama
- 35:56Speaker 3: video game, and he'd be.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Like, I love the health care. Well, no, like, and
- 36:00Speaker 2: look at, I also love the fact that the video
- 36:02Speaker 2: game is, like, a flash animation being played on what
- 36:05Speaker 2: looks to be, like, a digital phone or something. It's
- 36:09Speaker 2: got its own little unit. At first I thought he
- 36:10Speaker 2: was on a cell phone, but no, he's on, like,
- 36:12Speaker 2: his own little.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Like, camera.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Yeah exactly it's like it's like the guy's like hitting
- 36:15Speaker 2: some buttons on the narrow edge and i'm like dude
- 36:17Speaker 2: you're playing on a camera they weren't that high tech
- 36:21Speaker 2: in this i don't know if you know no no
- 36:22Speaker 2: but again it adds to the to the era confusion
- 36:25Speaker 2: of all these like people from the 90s listening to
- 36:27Speaker 2: music from the 80s and well they.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Are on this isolated island maybe it takes.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Okay okay let's let's let's stop hypothesizing as to.
- 36:33Speaker 17: Why it was poorly written um supposedly on by the.
- 36:37Speaker 11: Way somewhere in Maine that's the different thing it is
- 36:42Speaker 11: Maine and everything is weird.
- 36:44Speaker 2: There sorry Maine they only order their video games from
- 36:49Speaker 2: Indonesia and they're all weirdly designed.
- 36:52Speaker 11: People in Maine know that everybody in Maine is weird
- 36:54Speaker 11: the people that I know from Maine are weird and
- 36:58Speaker 11: then they'll say yeah we're different.
- 37:00Speaker 18: But we're not Nova Scotia is what they'll tell you
- 37:04Speaker 18: at least we're not but let's look at the kids
- 37:07Speaker 18: actions real quick though it's like okay so he wants
- 37:10Speaker 18: the boyfriend's guts to be spilled out like he's very
- 37:13Speaker 18: adamant about this he wants to sleep with his sister
- 37:17Speaker 18: marry her specifically but I feel like.
- 37:19Speaker 2: There's more I seem to recall there was more sexual
- 37:22Speaker 2: more sexually like.
- 37:24Speaker 12: He seems sort of out of it though because even
- 37:26Speaker 12: as she like becomes more sexualized he doesn't seem to
- 37:30Speaker 12: get into that at all.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Well because then he's by then he's focused on killing
- 37:34Speaker 2: the boyfriend like like that seems to be more of
- 37:36Speaker 2: a big deal to him and then to combine that
- 37:39Speaker 2: with the fact that he sees all these murderers and
- 37:42Speaker 2: it doesn't really affect him but and this is the
- 37:45Speaker 2: real killer for me is that he's he's talking to
- 37:48Speaker 2: satan or whoever this guy is supposed to be and
- 37:51Speaker 2: they're doing this whole who's on first routine of like
- 37:54Speaker 2: Satan makes the vaguest hand gestures and nods up and down.
- 37:58Speaker 2: And then the kid winds up interpreting elaborate justifications for
- 38:03Speaker 2: his actions. You want me to watch? At the drop
- 38:05Speaker 2: of a hat. Like, oh, you want me to stand
- 38:08Speaker 2: guard and watch while you go, you know, go stick
- 38:10Speaker 2: his head in a blender? And, like, he immediately on
- 38:14Speaker 2: the spot has these enormous, like, well-developed fantasies of, like,
- 38:19Speaker 2: what Satan anticipates. And, like, you get the impression that
- 38:21Speaker 2: the guy in the suit is like, Yeah, sure. Yeah,
- 38:24Speaker 2: that's the answer. And he goes off and.
- 38:25Speaker 7: Does his thing.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Candy's over that way, master.
- 38:41Speaker 16: Is all that stuff to tape people up, kill them,
- 38:44Speaker 16: and spill.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Their guts out? Awesome! But not my mom and sister.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Even in pretend. You have to promise.
- 38:56Speaker 3: Okay, well, I didn't get something. Like, you know, he
- 39:00Speaker 3: keeps telling Satan he wants Satan to rip out the
- 39:03Speaker 3: boyfriend's guts and all that. But then when Satan rips
- 39:06Speaker 3: out his dad's guts, which he had asked for, then
- 39:09Speaker 3: he's like, I thought it was a game.
- 39:11Speaker 8: I didn't think it was real.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Dude, what was.
- 39:13Speaker 9: So it's just called really, really poor writing.
- 39:16Speaker 12: Yeah, it's just that's and it shows what like either
- 39:20Speaker 12: how badly he's written or how crazy he is that
- 39:23Speaker 12: he definitely wants the boyfriend's guts ripped out. He has
- 39:27Speaker 12: no concept of right and wrong as they're mowing down.
- 39:29Speaker 12: people right and left in the cart and just like
- 39:32Speaker 12: violently killing people along the way but he makes the
- 39:35Speaker 12: point very specifically not my mom not my sister So
- 39:39Speaker 12: he knows there's actions and consequences.
- 39:42Speaker 2: He does understand.
- 39:43Speaker 12: He's not totally ignorant.
- 39:44Speaker 2: But then he totally falls.
- 39:46Speaker 10: He didn't say, not my.
- 39:47Speaker 3: Dad, though.
- 39:48Speaker 2: He didn't say, not my dad. But that's the thing.
- 39:50Speaker 12: It's not like he's just completely clueless. He doesn't know
- 39:53Speaker 12: what's going on. He makes that distinction and says, not
- 39:56Speaker 12: my sister, not my mom. Well, that just makes it
- 39:58Speaker 12: horribly wrong now.
- 40:00Speaker 3: But then whenever Dad's killed, it's like, I thought it
- 40:02Speaker 3: was a game.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Oops, I forgot to add Dad to the list.
- 40:05Speaker 8: No, no, no.
- 40:06Speaker 2: And finally, Jesus shows up. Sorry, a guy in a
- 40:09Speaker 2: creepy-ass Jesus mask who looms over him, and he is
- 40:14Speaker 2: instantly rapturous. Well, he had a hold on it.
- 40:17Speaker 10: He had the stigmata.
- 40:18Speaker 8: That's the best.
- 40:19Speaker 12: Yeah, and he's like, look, look, it's his blood. And
- 40:22Speaker 12: it's like, dude. That's how you know it's real Jesus.
- 40:25Speaker 2: Oh, God. Real Jesus really bleeds.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:29Speaker 2: It's in the Bible.
- 40:30Speaker 11: Well, that's what I don't understand is he has no
- 40:32Speaker 11: respect for God or Jesus, but he instantly starts praying.
- 40:36Speaker 11: And he instantly believes in, you know, Jesus is going
- 40:38Speaker 11: to help him. Wait, this whole movie, you want to be,
- 40:41Speaker 11: I was going to watch out for God and make
- 40:42Speaker 11: sure he didn't show up. Now all of a sudden you, yeah,
- 40:46Speaker 11: it doesn't.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Isn't that how most people operate? That's probably modern. I
- 40:51Speaker 2: don't want religion until it can help me.
- 40:53Speaker 11: I think the problem is we've probably discussed this film
- 40:56Speaker 11: more than the writers did.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 40:58Speaker 9: I was going to say, this is a much more
- 40:59Speaker 9: intensive meeting than they ever had when they were originally
- 41:03Speaker 9: conceiving of this plot.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Well we got an island and we.
- 41:07Speaker 12: Have this guy well I was going to say what
- 41:09Speaker 12: I think we'll figure it out once we start shooting
- 41:12Speaker 12: it'll all.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Come together in the editing too the point is we
- 41:15Speaker 2: found this costume at a yarn bar.
- 41:19Speaker 12: Look how creepy this mask is let's make a movie
- 41:21Speaker 12: this doesn't make.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Sense well it'll come out in the editing but yeah
- 41:28Speaker 2: this film though again I just want to there's the
- 41:30Speaker 2: goosebumps cartoony nature of it I will say one disappointment
- 41:34Speaker 2: That actually does stick out for me. Like, cause again,
- 41:37Speaker 2: like after the process of like blacking out all the,
- 41:41Speaker 2: all the terrible stuff that you have to kind of
- 41:42Speaker 2: ignore to enjoy the film, the fact that in the end,
- 41:45Speaker 2: the villain kind of wins and they go for that creepy, Oh,
- 41:49Speaker 2: we're all going to die anyway. There's no way to
- 41:51Speaker 2: escape him sort of thing that actually kind of bummed
- 41:54Speaker 2: me out. Cause by the end, when, like she's dressed
- 41:57Speaker 2: up as a chicken and he's dressed up as like
- 41:59Speaker 2: a frog and they're going to like infiltrate the, the,
- 42:02Speaker 2: the Halloween party in the castle to go save the
- 42:05Speaker 2: mom from the cereal. Like at that point I was like, okay,
- 42:08Speaker 2: this is like a cartoon show. Like, you know, and,
- 42:11Speaker 2: and I was totally ready for like a heroic ending
- 42:13Speaker 2: of some kind. I felt like I actually did feel
- 42:15Speaker 2: a little robbed.
- 42:16Speaker 12: No, that's the whole tone of the movie.
- 42:19Speaker 2: And that's what closure is.
- 42:20Speaker 12: So like, it's so uneven because you'll go into it
- 42:23Speaker 12: and I swear, like, Before he starts dragging the body out,
- 42:27Speaker 12: I'm like, it feels like a made-for-ABC family movie. Like,
- 42:32Speaker 12: it feels exactly like it's made for TV, fun.
- 42:36Speaker 2: With incest. Not even as creepy as Goosebumps.
- 42:39Speaker 1: ABC, yeah.
- 42:40Speaker 2: ABC family.
- 42:41Speaker 12: It seems very PC, happy little town kind of bullshit.
- 42:45Speaker 12: And then he starts dragging the dead body out. And
- 42:48Speaker 12: then the sister starts, you know, like... Then they throw in, like,
- 42:51Speaker 12: random nudity and, like, all the other weird stuff along
- 42:55Speaker 12: the way.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Oh, hanging the old lady. Hanging the old lady.
- 42:58Speaker 8: Killing the cat.
- 42:59Speaker 9: Killing the cat.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Massively.
- 43:02Speaker 2: That's the one I had a problem with, of course.
- 43:03Speaker 17: I'm just really glad Lucy wasn't here for this episode.
- 43:06Speaker 17: She would have been... She would have.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Loved the cat scene. Oh, and then they ask him
- 43:11Speaker 2: to pose, and he's all like... That was kind of funny.
- 43:14Speaker 2: That was a moment where I was like, okay, I'm
- 43:16Speaker 2: starting to like this guy.
- 43:18Speaker 3: And that was product placement, too, because the little girl
- 43:20Speaker 3: was dressed as Wendy from Wendy's. I'm pretty sure there
- 43:24Speaker 3: was nothing of actual product placement.
- 43:27Speaker 2: There would have nothing to do with it. But that's
- 43:32Speaker 2: the thing.
- 43:32Speaker 12: It's got that weird, like, made for ABC family, but
- 43:36Speaker 12: they didn't check it at the censors.
- 43:37Speaker 2: So it's like they.
- 43:38Speaker 12: Just put in whatever the hell they wanted and then
- 43:41Speaker 12: let it go. And I'm just like, this tone is
- 43:43Speaker 12: so uneven. So I actually kind of like that ending,
- 43:46Speaker 12: but it doesn't match the movie.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Like, you're right.
- 43:48Speaker 12: Like, that middle part, which I think that castle thing
- 43:51Speaker 12: is where, like, if it goes off the rails more
- 43:53Speaker 12: than it did from the beginning, that's where it all
- 43:56Speaker 12: goes wrong.
- 43:57Speaker 8: Oh, the transvestite... car parkers or whatever.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Who somehow seemed so appropriate in that film.
- 44:03Speaker 8: I was like, these guys are good.
- 44:04Speaker 3: Why aren't they in the movie more?
- 44:07Speaker 8: My favorite part about that is.
- 44:10Speaker 3: When Alex or whatever, the boyfriend is going through the
- 44:13Speaker 3: party and there's one girl he bumps into and she's like,
- 44:16Speaker 3: stop it, asshole. Watch it, asshole. And I was like, oh,
- 44:19Speaker 3: she had a speaking part. Must be the producer's daughter.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Yeah. But no, yeah, actually, I was watching. I was like, yeah, man,
- 44:29Speaker 2: the trends. the transvestite valets at a big, at a
- 44:33Speaker 2: big fancy party where there are a bunch of murders
- 44:36Speaker 2: about to take place. Like that sounds like a movie.
- 44:38Speaker 2: I kind of want to see like there were little
- 44:40Speaker 2: bits and pieces in there.
- 44:43Speaker 17: That's the thing.
- 44:48Speaker 12: Like to me, it has a piece of it that
- 44:51Speaker 12: I really like. And that's what I wish they would
- 44:53Speaker 12: have gone with.
- 44:54Speaker 2: And they are way the hell off in left field.
- 44:57Speaker 12: But yeah, I like that 11 minutes in when he's
- 45:00Speaker 12: dragging the body out, I'm like, okay, if this is
- 45:01Speaker 12: where we're going, this has promise. I like the idea
- 45:05Speaker 12: of them working in, how much can you get away
- 45:08Speaker 12: with on Halloween? I mean, everybody's heard the urban legend of,
- 45:12Speaker 12: and then their neighbor hung himself, and they didn't know
- 45:14Speaker 12: it all day because they thought it was a fake dummy.
- 45:18Speaker 12: Everybody's got those weird stories in their neighborhood. I know
- 45:21Speaker 12: someone who tells it, and it happened across the street.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Who the hell knows? Everybody has those weird stories. What's
- 45:26Speaker 2: the weird story in your neighborhood?
- 45:28Speaker 12: They hung themselves across the street and nobody knew it
- 45:30Speaker 12: because it was Halloween it's my sister's neighborhood and a
- 45:36Speaker 12: guy across the street hung himself dear me But again,
- 45:39Speaker 12: he did kill himself. I don't know what the real
- 45:41Speaker 12: story is. That's the way it is told now because
- 45:43Speaker 12: it's urban legend.
- 45:44Speaker 8: At least if you're going to kill yourself, make yourself
- 45:46Speaker 8: an urban legend.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess so. That's always been my philosophy.
- 45:48Speaker 13: Tears in the throat.
- 45:53Speaker 12: But that, I think, would have been interesting if you
- 45:55Speaker 12: get to that point of him just going from house
- 45:58Speaker 12: to house and doing horrible things. Because we don't even
- 46:01Speaker 12: get like the cop end of it like later you
- 46:02Speaker 12: kind of hear sirens go by like we almost need
- 46:05Speaker 12: like that weird Let people out of.
- 46:07Speaker 10: Prison is that what that little squad was I Because
- 46:13Speaker 10: it showed those two or three guys running around doing stuff.
- 46:16Speaker 12: And I was like, are they with him?
- 46:20Speaker 17: Like he set the police station on fire. And that's
- 46:22Speaker 17: how you know it was the arsonist.
- 46:24Speaker 11: That was the lamest anarchy I've ever seen. Five guys
- 46:28Speaker 11: in masks running around.
- 46:30Speaker 1: There's only five.
- 46:31Speaker 17: Cops in the town and three of them are dead.
- 46:33Speaker 13: If it's a small town thing, you think you'd get
- 46:35Speaker 13: a bunch of them behind. The idea, because that's what
- 46:38Speaker 13: I always love on the old William Shatner Kingdom of
- 46:40Speaker 13: the Spiders. There's that whole scene where it's like, yeah,
- 46:44Speaker 13: when they back out and you see the view from
- 46:47Speaker 13: the top of the cherry picker, you can see that
- 46:48Speaker 13: it's like mass pandemonium confined to like.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Half a block.
- 46:53Speaker 13: But when you're in the thick of it, you can
- 46:56Speaker 13: tell that basically they got everyone in this desert town,
- 47:00Speaker 13: even though it was only like 200 people and they
- 47:02Speaker 13: could fit in a really confined area. It's like they
- 47:04Speaker 13: got the whole town and they all put the fake
- 47:06Speaker 13: spiders on them. But there's no love in that.
- 47:09Speaker 12: Yeah, I think that idea has potential. I think we've
- 47:13Speaker 12: already kind of had somebody do that and do a
- 47:16Speaker 12: massively better job because to me that's kind of what
- 47:18Speaker 12: they're playing with in Trick or Treat.
- 47:20Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 47:20Speaker 9: This is a movie that's only three years later and
- 47:24Speaker 9: it's such an incredible film.
- 47:27Speaker 12: Yeah, it's so well put together and you see that
- 47:30Speaker 12: whole opening with the little masked character. That's exactly what
- 47:34Speaker 12: they're doing there.
- 47:35Speaker 2: And Trick or Treat was awesome.
- 47:37Speaker 13: We were talking about it earlier about how it is
- 47:39Speaker 13: like The best film for capturing just the essence and
- 47:43Speaker 13: atmosphere of Halloween night.
- 47:44Speaker 9: That out-of-control strangeness of the evening.
- 47:47Speaker 8: Or all the.
- 47:48Speaker 13: Urban legends and what we were talking about on the
- 47:52Speaker 13: last episode with why you should check your candy.
- 47:54Speaker 10: All that stuff. They just worked it in so perfectly
- 47:57Speaker 10: into that.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Well, that movie is also interesting to put against this
- 48:01Speaker 2: one because it does so many things that the film
- 48:04Speaker 2: shouldn't be able to pull off. It manages to go
- 48:07Speaker 2: into all these realms of excess. And it manages to
- 48:09Speaker 2: subvert itself constantly and keep you guessing. And yet at
- 48:13Speaker 2: no point do you ever really feel like that film
- 48:16Speaker 2: betrays itself or cheats or goes off the rails.
- 48:21Speaker 12: And is massively complicated and loops back around on itself.
- 48:24Speaker 12: Where this one's streamlined and they still can't even get it.
- 48:28Speaker 11: And just basic trick-or-treat is so much better with lighting
- 48:32Speaker 11: than this was. I mean, I appreciate how... clear everything
- 48:36Speaker 11: is in this, but it's, it's just, well.
- 48:38Speaker 9: It's like it was shot by a television crew.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:40Speaker 2: It rides that line.
- 48:42Speaker 9: Very atmospheric movie.
- 48:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:43Speaker 2: We've, we've, we've, uh, we've seen films that are, that
- 48:46Speaker 2: are terribly shot. Yeah. And look amateurish. And we've seen
- 48:49Speaker 2: films that are really professional. It's like, This, to me,
- 48:51Speaker 2: was actually almost the most perfect example of right dead
- 48:55Speaker 2: center in the middle. Like, every shot was well lit.
- 48:58Speaker 2: It's competently made, but not well made. Well, that's the thing. Like,
- 49:03Speaker 2: you had everyone was well lit. You saw all their faces.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Their eyes were in the right places. You had some
- 49:08Speaker 2: decent angled shots that weren't, like, pointless. Like, you know,
- 49:11Speaker 2: in some old B-movies where you suddenly veer out into
- 49:14Speaker 2: the woods and you're seeing them from a distance. But
- 49:17Speaker 2: uh but at the same time yeah there was no
- 49:19Speaker 2: dramatic shadow work there was no interestingly framed shots like
- 49:24Speaker 2: pretty much the only interesting things to see were well
- 49:28Speaker 2: was that guy in his costume you.
- 49:30Speaker 12: Know i mean it was very much tv like it
- 49:32Speaker 12: feels like a just slapped together tv show They don't
- 49:36Speaker 12: do any interesting angles.
- 49:37Speaker 2: They don't do camera work.
- 49:38Speaker 12: They just get them lit and put it in there.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Interesting in that respect, though. I kept saying that. I
- 49:44Speaker 2: was like, well, I can't fault the camera work. But
- 49:47Speaker 2: I can't say what it's missing that would make it great.
- 49:50Speaker 12: I think it would be interesting to do one like that.
- 49:53Speaker 12: To be like, everything's in the light of day. Everything
- 49:56Speaker 12: is out in the open and he's getting away with it. Again,
- 49:58Speaker 12: I think there's a way to make that interesting.
- 50:00Speaker 2: They don't do it. But I think it's an interesting concept.
- 50:03Speaker 12: I liked.
- 50:05Speaker 11: Like when they walked out, because I was like, as
- 50:07Speaker 11: they were in the store buying the stuff, and they
- 50:09Speaker 11: weren't buying it, you know, I was like, how's he
- 50:11Speaker 11: going to pay for this? He's clearly not.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Going to pay.
- 50:13Speaker 19: He's safe.
- 50:14Speaker 8: He just walked out, and I was like, I'm really
- 50:16Speaker 8: liking this part.
- 50:17Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 50:17Speaker 8: He doesn't give a shit, and the guy chases, because
- 50:20Speaker 8: that's how it would be. The clerk would be like.
- 50:22Speaker 10: Hey, hey, hey.
- 50:23Speaker 12: Hey, like there is a minute of, you're not just
- 50:26Speaker 12: walking out, right? Like, you would sit there and be like,
- 50:29Speaker 12: guess I'm going to go chase this guy down?
- 50:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that scene was actually really realistic. Yeah. Like, you
- 50:34Speaker 2: see him like, follow for a second like with a
- 50:37Speaker 2: quizzical look on his face like oh you do yeah
- 50:39Speaker 2: like um.
- 50:41Speaker 11: And you could get away with that probably just go
- 50:44Speaker 11: in take the stuff walk out and most times they're
- 50:47Speaker 11: not going to be able to even touch.
- 50:48Speaker 2: You well and and and you know you get the
- 50:50Speaker 2: impression that.
- 50:50Speaker 3: Let's try it tonight you get.
- 50:52Speaker 2: The impression the clerk might try to razzle him a
- 50:54Speaker 2: bit you know or something but then of course he's
- 50:56Speaker 2: got the kitchen knife and it's all done But, yeah, no,
- 50:59Speaker 2: and that's immediately when it goes off and you sort
- 51:02Speaker 2: of see how ridiculous this character has become. Like, when
- 51:06Speaker 2: he starts, like, pushing the kid around in the cart,
- 51:08Speaker 2: knocking over, like, a woman with a baby character.
- 51:11Speaker 8: A pregnant woman.
- 51:11Speaker 2: A pregnant woman.
- 51:12Speaker 8: Blind guy, 50 points.
- 51:13Speaker 17: Like, why are all these, like, crippled or, like.
- 51:19Speaker 2: Because they're worth more points.
- 51:21Speaker 17: I was going to say, why is this random assortment
- 51:24Speaker 17: of people in this parking lot at once?
- 51:26Speaker 12: Because you get the most points.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Have you ever been to a Walmart parking lot? Old
- 51:31Speaker 2: people and babies is the way to go in depth race, man.
- 51:35Speaker 3: There is a couple things I didn't really understand.
- 51:38Speaker 2: First of all, up front, the very beginning.
- 51:40Speaker 3: The hot daughter.
- 51:46Speaker 3: Is coming home from college for Halloween. Do colleges have
- 51:50Speaker 3: Halloween breaks?
- 51:51Speaker 1: No.
- 51:51Speaker 4: No.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Sure they do.
- 51:53Speaker 3: Because at first I was like, well, maybe she just
- 51:56Speaker 3: is taking some time off to come because she said
- 51:58Speaker 3: that her little brother really likes Halloween. But her boyfriend
- 52:03Speaker 3: is coming too because he had Halloween off too. So
- 52:07Speaker 3: it's like the whole college.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Has a Halloween break.
- 52:10Speaker 17: There's a fall break usually around Halloween.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Especially around Thanksgiving.
- 52:13Speaker 12: They didn't say how far away. I thought maybe they
- 52:15Speaker 12: just left for the weekend.
- 52:16Speaker 8: I would have... If I were him... and that were her,
- 52:21Speaker 8: I'd have said, yeah, sure, I'm going to go home
- 52:23Speaker 8: with you.
- 52:24Speaker 12: Because a few minutes in, I'm like, okay, they do
- 52:26Speaker 12: another shot of Alex, a really well-lit shot of Alex.
- 52:29Speaker 2: I was like, okay, dude, no. This is not happening.
- 52:32Speaker 2: In the real world, she is so far out of
- 52:34Speaker 2: your league.
- 52:35Speaker 3: But they made the whole point about he's from that island,
- 52:38Speaker 3: and somehow they've never met on the island.
- 52:41Speaker 8: There's 12 people on the island.
- 52:42Speaker 5: But he.
- 52:44Speaker 3: But he has got to come home because it's break
- 52:47Speaker 3: and he can't stay at school and he doesn't want
- 52:50Speaker 3: to stay at his father's house.
- 52:51Speaker 8: That's a story.
- 52:55Speaker 2: I can't do that either. And some of those great
- 52:59Speaker 2: lines of dialogue. Oh, so you're going to dress up
- 53:02Speaker 2: like Satan for my little brother? He says, well... I
- 53:04Speaker 2: lived with Satan for years. Oh, my God.
- 53:07Speaker 10: The fact that that's his costume, that he takes it
- 53:09Speaker 10: that far to go and try to dress up like
- 53:10Speaker 10: his dad.
- 53:11Speaker 2: And then walk around.
- 53:12Speaker 12: Telling people he's Satan. I'm like, nobody gets this reference
- 53:15Speaker 12: but you, genius.
- 53:16Speaker 2: Settle down.
- 53:17Speaker 8: But he's a method actor.
- 53:17Speaker 3: You are a terrible actor. But she keeps saying he's
- 53:20Speaker 3: such a good actor. But method acting is what killed
- 53:23Speaker 3: everyone in it because she doesn't become a slut until
- 53:26Speaker 3: she puts on the costume. It's like, I'm embodying the character.
- 53:28Speaker 10: With that fantastic accent. She starts talking.
- 53:31Speaker 8: She pushes up her boobs.
- 53:32Speaker 2: That's bizarre.
- 53:33Speaker 12: Actually, okay, before she starts getting super sexual in the mirror, that, like,
- 53:39Speaker 12: 30 seconds beforehand where she just silently stares at herself
- 53:44Speaker 12: was one of the most confusing things.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Like, her look at.
- 53:47Speaker 12: Herself in the mirror is so... I swear I haven't
- 53:52Speaker 12: seen one like that. Like a shot like that outside
- 53:55Speaker 12: of a body switching.
- 53:56Speaker 3: The costume was giving power.
- 53:57Speaker 12: Like she was looking like she didn't recognize who the person.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Was in the mirror. It was like she's never seen
- 54:02Speaker 2: her midriff before. I was just like, what the hell
- 54:05Speaker 2: is going on here? I don't know.
- 54:09Speaker 17: I was really confused by her Scottish Cockney accent.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Oh, right.
- 54:12Speaker 17: I was like, is that how people talk at Renaissance fairs?
- 54:15Speaker 17: Because I don't think so.
- 54:16Speaker 2: She's just an actress.
- 54:18Speaker 12: You won't understand unless you're really a good actress like
- 54:21Speaker 12: her and Alex.
- 54:23Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 54:24Speaker 11: Either that was because I kind of gave them points thinking, oh, okay,
- 54:29Speaker 11: she's a bad actress at acting school. And she thinks
- 54:32Speaker 11: she's good. And so the actress is acting like a
- 54:36Speaker 11: bad act. You know, that's what I was hoping.
- 54:38Speaker 2: So maybe she is a great actress. She's just really
- 54:42Speaker 2: good at playing a bad act.
- 54:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 54:44Speaker 11: An actress playing someone who's bad. That's what I'm giving
- 54:46Speaker 11: them credit for, but it's not really what's there.
- 54:49Speaker 3: Okay, something else I really didn't follow.
- 54:53Speaker 20: One of the... emotional hearts of the film was, of course,
- 54:58Speaker 20: the boyfriend, Alex, and his antagonistic relationship with his father,
- 55:01Speaker 20: who beats him and strikes him.
- 55:04Speaker 3: You get the scene where Alex is convinced that his
- 55:07Speaker 3: dad is somehow in the Satan outfit, and it must
- 55:10Speaker 3: be his dad. He confronts him on the sidewalk. He
- 55:13Speaker 3: points a gun to him. Satan takes the gun from him,
- 55:17Speaker 3: shoots his own hand, and gives it back to Alex.
- 55:21Speaker 3: Alex is somehow convinced that Satan.
- 55:25Speaker 3: Who he thinks is his father, his father shooting himself
- 55:28Speaker 3: in the hand is somehow an insult to Alex.
- 55:31Speaker 8: I did not follow that.
- 55:32Speaker 2: That's how you know that boy has issues.
- 55:34Speaker 3: But how does that, can anyone explain?
- 55:37Speaker 8: I think it's the, you can't even kill me. I
- 55:40Speaker 8: can injure myself.
- 55:41Speaker 12: You can't do a goddamn thing because you're my loser
- 55:44Speaker 12: ass son.
- 55:47Speaker 3: If my dad had done it, I'd have been like,
- 55:48Speaker 3: wait a minute, come back and explain this to me.
- 55:51Speaker 18: Why should I feel angsty about this?
- 55:58Speaker 8: They had to get to the stigmatism.
- 56:01Speaker 2: And show that he's a crazy person. They do that
- 56:04Speaker 2: stuff to themselves all the time.
- 56:06Speaker 13: How is he going to hold his candy after that?
- 56:08Speaker 2: They bring up that point.
- 56:10Speaker 12: I think online they listed that in the fight with Alex,
- 56:12Speaker 12: his hand is not hurt at all.
- 56:14Speaker 2: And then later he's like.
- 56:15Speaker 12: Oh, look, I injured it. Yeah, it's like when he
- 56:18Speaker 12: beats the hell out of Alex later, it's like he
- 56:21Speaker 12: seems to be fine.
- 56:22Speaker 8: He's safe.
- 56:23Speaker 2: He's Satan, I suppose. Well, it's part of his weird
- 56:26Speaker 2: supervillain powers. It's like, you know, he can shoot himself
- 56:29Speaker 2: in the hand without making a sound. He can, you know.
- 56:32Speaker 3: Oh, his best superpower? He can somehow sniff panties through
- 56:36Speaker 3: that mask.
- 56:37Speaker 17: And also drink wine.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Oh, no, no, no. You just pour it on your face.
- 56:41Speaker 2: It wasn't just that he was sniffing panties. It was
- 56:43Speaker 2: that he starts going down on her, and she's like.
- 56:45Speaker 2: like going, oh, oh, and like, you know, rolling her
- 56:48Speaker 2: eyes up in her head and stuff. And it's like, dude,
- 56:50Speaker 2: guy's just rubbing his latex mask like over your belly button.
- 56:54Speaker 2: He's in character. That is the most sexual contact that
- 56:58Speaker 2: is going on right now.
- 56:59Speaker 12: He just barely drops out of frame so you can
- 57:00Speaker 12: still see his head. I'm like, I think he's just
- 57:02Speaker 12: licking your midriff.
- 57:03Speaker 15: Right.
- 57:03Speaker 2: He's not really. He is rubbing his latex mask against
- 57:07Speaker 2: your belly button. And she's like, oh dear, this is
- 57:09Speaker 2: the most sexual contact I've ever had in my life.
- 57:12Speaker 3: It probably is.
- 57:12Speaker 2: That whole island.
- 57:13Speaker 8: That's the cinematic version.
- 57:15Speaker 21: That it's not even in the right place i'm in
- 57:18Speaker 21: the vicinity it's close enough whatever i think that's one
- 57:21Speaker 21: of the reasons why i was ultimately disappointed that it
- 57:24Speaker 21: was actually some guy wearing a mask and somehow the
- 57:26Speaker 21: mask wasn't doing that because obviously you know he could
- 57:32Speaker 21: sniff panties through through the mask he could drink alcohol it.
- 57:35Speaker 12: Would have been more interesting had they just that would
- 57:38Speaker 12: have been really how satan looks.
- 57:40Speaker 3: And then you know you don't really see any like
- 57:41Speaker 3: eye holes but they're at this huge party and across
- 57:46Speaker 3: the room you know satan waves at the hot girl
- 57:49Speaker 3: points down to her shoes he can see across the
- 57:52Speaker 3: room through all these people through his mask that she's
- 57:55Speaker 3: wearing high heels and he points it out to her.
- 57:59Speaker 2: Yeah wearing high heels after she had been running to
- 58:01Speaker 2: the party And somehow we're expected to also believe that, oh,
- 58:05Speaker 2: by the way, I recognize the shoes that you were
- 58:07Speaker 2: wearing with your slut dress earlier. Chickens don't wear high heels. What,
- 58:10Speaker 2: are you crazy?
- 58:11Speaker 3: Back when I was wearing my Darth Vader mask when
- 58:14Speaker 3: I was seven, I couldn't see crap. And that had
- 58:17Speaker 3: eye holes cut in it. And he could see crap.
- 58:19Speaker 2: And oddly enough, also wearing high heels.
- 58:20Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 58:21Speaker 3: I couldn't really smell panties either through that dress.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Man, did you try. Did you, super hot sister? That's inappropriate.
- 58:29Speaker 17: Wow.
- 58:29Speaker 3: Right there.
- 58:32Speaker 2: Nope, I'm sending that to your sister. Anyway, so... I'm
- 58:36Speaker 2: going to marry her someday. Special message to you from Ben. Mom,
- 58:43Speaker 2: is Satan real?
- 58:45Speaker 1: Oh, hold on.
- 58:47Speaker 2: Yay! I have to put my computer headset on hold. Yeah,
- 58:50Speaker 2: the headset.
- 58:51Speaker 8: That was like she works at a call center or something.
- 58:53Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 58:54Speaker 8: That wasn't even Bluetooth. That was just some kind of.
- 58:57Speaker 2: It was like green. And he asks something like, hey,
- 59:00Speaker 2: what's this or something? She's like, play your game. Mind
- 59:03Speaker 2: your business. She's sitting there talking on the phone right
- 59:05Speaker 2: next to the kid. Great parenting.
- 59:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:10Speaker 8: The mom that says, I'm so high right now, right
- 59:12Speaker 8: in front of her kid.
- 59:14Speaker 2: That's fine parenting right there.
- 59:15Speaker 3: I just wonder how the video game portrayed hell. Because
- 59:19Speaker 3: he was all excited.
- 59:20Speaker 2: Is hell real?
- 59:21Speaker 7: It is?
- 59:21Speaker 8: Yay!
- 59:23Speaker 12: Yay, the whole world's kind of like a knockoff paperboy.
- 59:25Speaker 2: All right!
- 59:27Speaker 3: The odd thing is, the kid.
- 59:30Speaker 3: Acknowledged that God was real and God was more powerful
- 59:35Speaker 3: than Satan because he actually asked Satan, are you hiding
- 59:38Speaker 3: from God? So the boy knows that God is more
- 59:42Speaker 3: powerful than Satan and yet he wants to be friends
- 59:44Speaker 3: with Satan.
- 59:44Speaker 2: He's on the losing team. What the hell?
- 59:46Speaker 3: And not the more powerful thing.
- 59:48Speaker 17: See, what we're failing to realize is that this was
- 59:51Speaker 17: a beautiful underdog story.
- 59:52Speaker 12: He's really awesome.
- 59:55Speaker 2: God was the bully and Satan's the hero.
- 59:59Speaker 3: It's just like the kids on the bike bullying the
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: little kid.
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: That's how Satan tells the story. Well, God thought that
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: just because he made me that he could boss me
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: around and tell me what to do. But you know what?
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: I don't believe in just following orders. I believe in
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: being free.
- 1:00:20Speaker 12: I did hear him say all that when he nodded
- 1:00:21Speaker 12: that one time. It was a very elaborate thing that
- 1:00:25Speaker 12: I heard.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: But again, and that's part of what's terrible about that
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: ending is because he's like subverting it by saying like, oh,
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: he doesn't say anything because he doesn't want Satan to
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: hear him. It's like, what? By the way, I think
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: we knocked out Dave Posh.
- 1:00:41Speaker 9: You're still just talking about that movie. I can't believe
- 1:00:46Speaker 9: you can keep talking about it.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Maybe this is a movie podcast. Believe it or not,
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: we picked this random terrible movie to watch and damn it,
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: we're going to.
- 1:00:55Speaker 11: like i said it's one that brian always picks these
- 1:00:57Speaker 11: movies where it's like hey it's on netflix and afterwards
- 1:01:00Speaker 11: we're like.
- 1:01:01Speaker 12: Why you won't track down and watch the movies on
- 1:01:05Speaker 12: your own because if you kind of guess.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: More than a day to find it.
- 1:01:11Speaker 10: On a somewhere like a tested well I was kind
- 1:01:13Speaker 10: of like, look at some background on it. What's the
- 1:01:16Speaker 10: public opinion of this?
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: I've heard of it well before this.
- 1:01:19Speaker 10: Film festivals loved it, and everyone was waiting for an
- 1:01:22Speaker 10: official release.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: That's depressing.
- 1:01:24Speaker 8: That's just depressing.
- 1:01:26Speaker 10: Rotten Tomatoes has it in the 60s or 70s, doesn't it?
- 1:01:29Speaker 10: It's not low.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: Rotten Tomatoes has it.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: And people seem to be making a lot of excuses, saying, well,
- 1:01:36Speaker 9: you know, it's satire. And I'm like, no, no, it's
- 1:01:38Speaker 9: not clever enough to be said.
- 1:01:40Speaker 12: I mean, that was half the reason. I was like,
- 1:01:41Speaker 12: I do want to see it to clear up what
- 1:01:44Speaker 12: it is and if it is really worth what everybody says. So, yeah,
- 1:01:47Speaker 12: that was half the reason. I'm like, all right, we
- 1:01:50Speaker 12: can watch it. I don't know what the hell it's
- 1:01:52Speaker 12: going to be.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Now we know. Our review is in part a detailed
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: exposition of why you shouldn't be watching this film.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Yeah, with any luck, it should last as long as
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: the film itself.
- 1:02:03Speaker 8: It's more of a support group.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: You should have already watched it. I told them that
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: at the beginning. Fair enough, yeah. But I don't know.
- 1:02:13Speaker 12: I think you can go ahead and watch it, but
- 1:02:16Speaker 12: watch it about the length of a Goosebumps episode, and
- 1:02:19Speaker 12: you're fine because it's amusing at that point. It's that
- 1:02:22Speaker 12: halfway point. It becomes painful for me. It's not fun
- 1:02:26Speaker 12: after the midway.
- 1:02:27Speaker 13: And that's actually the whole support group thing. I think
- 1:02:29Speaker 13: had we watched this as a group, we would have
- 1:02:31Speaker 13: found it entertaining. Like watching the room as a group.
- 1:02:35Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:02:35Speaker 13: The room is unwatchable by yourself.
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:39Speaker 13: It's like so many of the movies that they do
- 1:02:41Speaker 13: on Mystery Science Theater. Those movies, if you watched it
- 1:02:43Speaker 13: without the comics, they're unwatchable. It's like, it's the shared
- 1:02:47Speaker 13: misery thing that I think helps. And I really feel
- 1:02:50Speaker 13: like this thing, you know, Most of the watching I
- 1:02:53Speaker 13: ended up enjoying and doing was when Dave showed up
- 1:02:55Speaker 13: and we're both kind of laughing at stuff.
- 1:02:56Speaker 9: I mean, it's just not bad enough for me to enjoy.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: If you fail on that level, you failed. Well, that's a.
- 1:03:02Speaker 12: It's not that level of bad is the problem. It's
- 1:03:04Speaker 12: still just too middle of the road.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: So mediocre.
- 1:03:08Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:03:09Speaker 10: Yeah, like when you don't tell me it's supposed to
- 1:03:10Speaker 10: be bad.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: They kind of are.
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: I want.
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: I tried and I failed miserably.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: I like that. I love epic bad.
- 1:03:17Speaker 12: I mean, if you can deliver that, I'm just like
- 1:03:20Speaker 12: in awe of how bad you missed the mark.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: This doesn't really ever do that. There's a kind of
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: a weird mystique that's come up around B-movies about how
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: bad they are and how entertainingly bad they are. Something
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: people tend to forget is that the vast majority of
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: B-movies are B-movies because they are just bad. They're just
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: lame and they take too long. There's needless exposition. There's
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: needless dialogue. There's needless this, that, and the other. We
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: could have cut this film down to about 30 minutes,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: and we wouldn't have missed anything crucial, and we actually
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: probably would have crafted a much more entertaining episode of Goosebumps.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: But really, this movie, so much of it, I think,
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: is just it's not horrifyingly, hilariously awful. It's just meh. Like,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: what's happening next? Every once in a while.
- 1:04:09Speaker 12: The moment when he goes up to his room with
- 1:04:11Speaker 12: Satan and they're playing with action figures.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: I was pretty entertained with that. He's just kind of pew, pew,
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: you know, just playing with action figures.
- 1:04:18Speaker 13: But that's the other thing, too, is, like, whenever you have, like,
- 1:04:21Speaker 13: some B-movie that's bad, if you can, I feel like
- 1:04:25Speaker 13: some of those you can watch it and you can
- 1:04:28Speaker 13: tell that the crew gave it their all for what
- 1:04:32Speaker 13: it's worth. It's like they knew going in, it's like,
- 1:04:34Speaker 13: This is a shitty movie. But you know what?
- 1:04:36Speaker 8: We're having fun.
- 1:04:37Speaker 13: And you can watch and you can tell everybody's having
- 1:04:39Speaker 13: a lot of fun. I didn't feel like I was
- 1:04:40Speaker 13: getting that vibe from anyone on here. It's like everyone's
- 1:04:42Speaker 13: just showing up. It's like, I'm going into work for Wendy's.
- 1:04:47Speaker 13: I get off at 10. I think the guy wearing
- 1:04:49Speaker 13: the mask was having a good time.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: He's like the only one.
- 1:04:52Speaker 13: But everybody else felt like it was just, go in,
- 1:04:55Speaker 13: do my shift, leave. That's the vibe I got from
- 1:04:59Speaker 13: what I watched.
- 1:04:59Speaker 12: To put it in perspective of using the reference that
- 1:05:02Speaker 12: you made earlier... looking back at this director and writer's career,
- 1:05:08Speaker 12: there's one noticeable one that jumps out. His second, actually
- 1:05:12Speaker 12: the first feature that he did, he did a short,
- 1:05:14Speaker 12: his second one was Squirm.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: Which was a mystery science theater. And he did Blue Sunshine,
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: didn't he? Yeah, he did Blue Sunshine.
- 1:05:22Speaker 13: And Blue Sunshine has some fun elements though. It kind of,
- 1:05:25Speaker 13: loses itself in the final act but still.
- 1:05:28Speaker 12: But squirm is pretty epic bad it's it's but still
- 1:05:32Speaker 12: it's at least got it's like again i think maybe
- 1:05:34Speaker 12: because it's dated more that it feels a little more
- 1:05:37Speaker 12: silly that you can kind of laugh at it where
- 1:05:40Speaker 12: this one just feels again.
- 1:05:41Speaker 10: It feels like more self-dated you can't even really give
- 1:05:44Speaker 10: them that excuse.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: When you kind of I was talking about Squirm.
- 1:05:47Speaker 12: Squirm is almost enjoyable because of a cheesy factor.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: How old is Squirm?
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: It's from 76. Oh, wow.
- 1:05:54Speaker 13: But see, you watch Squirm, and you watch Blue Sunshine,
- 1:05:57Speaker 13: and then you watch this. This doesn't sync up at all.
- 1:06:01Speaker 13: This feels like a complete regression compared to those. And
- 1:06:04Speaker 13: those aren't those great of films. But it's like he
- 1:06:07Speaker 13: just went a huge step back. It's like watching it,
- 1:06:10Speaker 13: and you feel like it's his first directorial effort. It's like, no,
- 1:06:12Speaker 13: the guy's been making... movies for you know 20 or
- 1:06:16Speaker 13: 30 years.
- 1:06:16Speaker 12: After blue sunshine he starts doing a lot of tv
- 1:06:19Speaker 12: work and you see like i think he just got
- 1:06:21Speaker 12: into the watered down tv world and just went all
- 1:06:24Speaker 12: right whatever but like somehow was still okay with writing
- 1:06:27Speaker 12: this horribly violent scene and working in nudity and language but.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: Yet keeping it all on this.
- 1:06:33Speaker 12: Bad tv like medium that just that's all it feels
- 1:06:37Speaker 12: like it's just a bad episode of a tv.
- 1:06:40Speaker 17: Show wow he did he did till death do us
- 1:06:42Speaker 17: part that's interesting Yeah. I never saw that, but I
- 1:06:45Speaker 17: always meant to.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Seems like an odd choice.
- 1:06:48Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: But, I mean, that's the thing.
- 1:06:50Speaker 12: Like, I can watch it for that first half and
- 1:06:52Speaker 12: at least laugh at it, and it's amusing, but by
- 1:06:55Speaker 12: the time he gets to that party, it just drags on. Like,
- 1:07:00Speaker 12: there's no need for that party nonsense. The Jesus switcheroo
- 1:07:04Speaker 12: does nothing for me.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: It's just annoying. I was laughing at the Jesus switcheroo.
- 1:07:08Speaker 8: And that's the whole thing, too, is within the context
- 1:07:11Speaker 8: of the film.
- 1:07:12Speaker 13: The cliche of tricking the main characters into killing someone
- 1:07:18Speaker 13: that is, like, on their own team. I mean, that's
- 1:07:21Speaker 13: been done in horror films before.
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: And can be done well. But essentially, they did it, like,
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: twice in this. And that's the whole thing.
- 1:07:27Speaker 13: It's like, after you've done it once, you can't get
- 1:07:30Speaker 13: the shock of doing it again.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Well, not only do they do it twice, but technically
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: they do a switcheroo thing, like, three or four times
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: because he dresses up. as he dresses the guy up
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: as him, you know, so that he gets shot by
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: his own son. then he dresses the son up as
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: him so that he gets beat to death by his
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: own girlfriend so those are the main two but then
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: he himself dresses up as Jesus once and then he
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: dresses up as a cop it's like there's.
- 1:07:56Speaker 18: A lot of so many times why would you let
- 1:07:59Speaker 18: someone a cop in a mask into your house after
- 1:08:02Speaker 18: that's happened.
- 1:08:03Speaker 12: Again like the kid was disturbed that makes as much
- 1:08:06Speaker 12: sense as why would you ring the doorbell in your
- 1:08:08Speaker 12: own house that.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: You just walked out the door spray paint he's like 666.
- 1:08:15Speaker 10: There was so many scenes in the house We're like
- 1:08:19Speaker 10: you just walk out the front door of your own
- 1:08:22Speaker 10: house and it wasn't enough like they would send one
- 1:08:24Speaker 10: else Like why can't you all walk out the front
- 1:08:28Speaker 10: door right? Like sending people to go scout for you.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: That was another there's another big plot holes that there
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: were I almost felt like it was a joke that
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: he kept walking to the door and locking.
- 1:08:39Speaker 22: It just just turning the bolt walking back and then
- 1:08:42Speaker 22: almost immediately after the next scene like the kid would
- 1:08:45Speaker 22: run up and be like oh look trick-or-treaters and.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: Like unlock the door and like but no one would
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: leave like it was like what are you doing why
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: are you locking this door it locks from the inside
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: you're not keeping anyone in um but no yeah yeah
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: so there's that scene.
- 1:09:02Speaker 17: But i was just it's not any more difficult than
- 1:09:04Speaker 17: turning the knob.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: Yeah yeah um they're a special fan but with that
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: said again there are a few scenes like there's some
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: scenes that are creepy because they just kind of go
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: on a little bit long like again the sort of
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: quasi groping scene between him and the girl they're at
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: least uncomfortable that one made me uncomfortable the knocking over
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: a pregnant lady in a shopping cart like that's uncomfortable
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: but then there were a couple scenes that i felt
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: were actually i'm again i'm gonna step out on a
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: limb and say were genuinely pretty awesome like for instance
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: the moment where the daughter first begins to realize holy
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: shit yeah like and you actually see this in the
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: actress's face of like but because holy shit he's not
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: the fact that it was because of the shoes yeah
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: it's like It's like, holy shit, it's not Alex. Holy shit,
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: he kind of went down on me in his mask.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: And then, holy shit, where's my little brother? I'm going
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: to call him.
- 1:09:53Speaker 17: Again.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: There's that moment of her calling out to him in
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: the empty house. There's so much potential. Alex has never
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: satisfied me.
- 1:10:01Speaker 12: Holy shit, that was my midriff, and that felt really.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: Anyway. Who knows what will happen to Nathan. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: I might just hook up with him. By the way,
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: I want to mention at this point, Dave... Dave Posh
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: has just stepped out.
- 1:10:11Speaker 8: He's had enough.
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: He checked out.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: I would assume he's never coming back, but he did
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: leave his record.
- 1:10:17Speaker 12: So he's probably going to at least check back in
- 1:10:20Speaker 12: before he escapes.
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: I'll keep it in my office for him. He's just like, yeah,
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: I need to use the bathroom.
- 1:10:26Speaker 9: Yeah, right.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: He's just gaping like we all wanted to.
- 1:10:30Speaker 8: One thing that I thought was missing is... We introduced.
- 1:10:33Speaker 18: And then.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: There's just been one thing.
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: One change. One thing that could have made this film better.
- 1:10:46Speaker 11: Is they introduced the tool of the telephone, the cell phone,
- 1:10:51Speaker 11: at the very beginning of the movie. As we have this.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: The tool that is known as the telephone.
- 1:10:57Speaker 11: And no one else has a cell phone at any
- 1:11:01Speaker 11: other point in the movie.
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: Because for everyone else, it's 1993.
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:11:04Speaker 8: It's like they go back in time when they get
- 1:11:06Speaker 8: on this island and they're never.
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: Maybe it was just a car phone, not a cell phone.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: All right, guys. Can I suggest something? I would love...
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: Based around that, the one thing that is missing. I
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: would love it if we could go around and say
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: one thing that we wish this film had done. It
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: doesn't matter if it's something that would have pushed it
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: to make it a worse film or a better film,
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: but I would love to hear from everybody. What's the
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: one thing that you wish that this film had gone
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: ahead and done?
- 1:11:32Speaker 10: Killed the kid.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: Ooh, that's a good one.
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: That's a good one.
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: Kill the kid.
- 1:11:36Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:11:37Speaker 10: I think I wanted the kid to die in it.
- 1:11:39Speaker 11: Or, no, the kid completely snaps and pulls a Tommy.
- 1:11:45Speaker 11: Uh you know that he is now let's let's start
- 1:11:50Speaker 11: out a whole franchise the kid is now going to
- 1:11:53Speaker 11: be satan's little helper and he just goes off.
- 1:11:55Speaker 12: And i've got it how it could have been so
- 1:11:57Speaker 12: much worse because i would have hated it a lot
- 1:12:00Speaker 12: more if by the end we realized there is no
- 1:12:02Speaker 12: satan that kid was just crazy and killed his whole
- 1:12:04Speaker 12: family it's all a figment of his imagination which.
- 1:12:09Speaker 22: I'm surprised yeah and and especially with all the things
- 1:12:14Speaker 22: that would really not make sense like you know satan
- 1:12:16Speaker 22: throwing people through windows and stuff like that like that
- 1:12:19Speaker 22: would be awesome if it turns out that was all
- 1:12:21Speaker 22: this kid he's he's.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: Like damien he's like all supernatural.
- 1:12:25Speaker 5: And shit.
- 1:12:28Speaker 12: Okay does anyone know everybody's coming up i'm still thinking.
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: Okay, at the very end when it fades to black,
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: you know.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: It could have started over again. They could have just said, sorry.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: It like fades to black.
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: Sorry.
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: And the camera would come back and you realize that
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: actually what you've been watching is a kid playing a
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: video game of the movie. It was like the whole
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: thing was a video game.
- 1:12:54Speaker 18: Like an Inception kind of thing.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: With really good graphics. And that would explain why it
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: looked so mediocre in the middle of the road. That's
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: why the lighting was just... you know, it was okay.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: 2004 video technology.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know, the angles were just first-person kind of.
- 1:13:15Speaker 17: I mean, that's about as elaborate. I mean, I'd say
- 1:13:17Speaker 17: it's less elaborate than Grand Theft Auto 5, so I mean,
- 1:13:21Speaker 17: the plot is much thinner than that.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:13:25Speaker 9: So this is wishing something the movie would have done something?
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: One single thing. This is incredibly.
- 1:13:32Speaker 9: You know, just a tiny little technical matter, but You
- 1:13:35Speaker 9: know that helicopter that you don't see?
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: There was a spotlight.
- 1:13:39Speaker 9: You saw a spotlight, which was like somebody's high power. But,
- 1:13:42Speaker 9: you know, they managed to slap a helicopter sound over
- 1:13:46Speaker 9: the soundtrack. And they managed to have a guy with
- 1:13:48Speaker 9: a big flashlight. Couldn't you have just pointed the camera
- 1:13:53Speaker 9: up at some point and just caught a helicopter flying by?
- 1:13:55Speaker 8: Because, you know, they're flying by all the time.
- 1:13:57Speaker 9: Everywhere I've ever lived, there's always choppers in the sky.
- 1:14:00Speaker 9: Couldn't you have just snuck a shot or grabbed a
- 1:14:03Speaker 9: stock shot?
- 1:14:03Speaker 8: In that Bigfoot movie, they show a helicopter for at
- 1:14:05Speaker 8: least 20 minutes.
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: And I was going to say, you've got, like, the
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: copter is, like, your basic stock footage. There is a
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: night copter somewhere.
- 1:14:13Speaker 9: They couldn't stir themselves to do that.
- 1:14:15Speaker 12: I can just picture the director sitting there on the
- 1:14:18Speaker 12: porch and a helicopter goes by and he just screams out, Production!
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: But they didn't even do it.
- 1:14:23Speaker 9: It's just like, how are we going to get past this?
- 1:14:25Speaker 9: I know we'll just use a flashlight.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: I've got a flashlight.
- 1:14:27Speaker 8: Was there even any wind? I mean, usually you can
- 1:14:30Speaker 8: do something.
- 1:14:31Speaker 9: It was just the kid on the radio. Like the
- 1:14:33Speaker 9: kid's like.
- 1:14:34Speaker 10: In the center.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: Helicopter. Come in helicopter. Waving his hand. I'm going to
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: save him.
- 1:14:38Speaker 8: And they still have the searchlight on the kid.
- 1:14:40Speaker 10: He's like dead center of the spotlight.
- 1:14:43Speaker 9: I just was like, wow, that's ineptitude there.
- 1:14:45Speaker 12: And why were they looking for that house? Did they
- 1:14:48Speaker 12: like call and tell him to go right there where
- 1:14:50Speaker 12: the killer is?
- 1:14:50Speaker 10: One of the last two living cops.
- 1:14:52Speaker 13: Actually, now that I've thought about it, I know something
- 1:14:54Speaker 13: that actually would have kept me like totally engrossed. And
- 1:14:56Speaker 13: this is not a lie.
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: This is genuine.
- 1:14:59Speaker 13: If it had been in another language, no subtitles.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: That's good.
- 1:15:04Speaker 8: Because I would have.
- 1:15:05Speaker 13: Just been like, this is so fucking weird now.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: Wouldn't doubt put it in Swahili. That's the thing.
- 1:15:11Speaker 12: When I heard about this, I assumed it was one
- 1:15:14Speaker 12: of those that was probably shot somewhere else.
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: Because actually, it kind of makes sense when you think
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: about it.
- 1:15:18Speaker 13: It's like somebody wrote a script, and then they put
- 1:15:20Speaker 13: it in a Google Translate, and it went from English
- 1:15:23Speaker 13: to Italian, and.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: Then Italian to Greek. I assume they shot it in Romania.
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: And then from Greek to Japanese, and then from Japanese
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: to English.
- 1:15:31Speaker 8: And it's like, shoot.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: And they shot it to be like an American film,
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: so it's got that thing. You know when they make
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: quasi-American films in foreign countries, and things just look a
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: little not quite American. It would have had that weird
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: vibe over the whole thing.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: Okay. I don't know.
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: I thought that, though, when I first... What little I.
- 1:15:52Speaker 12: Knew of it, I thought maybe it was one of
- 1:15:53Speaker 12: those weird things that was shot somewhere else, and that's
- 1:15:55Speaker 12: why it had a cult.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: Following, because people... All Americans.
- 1:15:58Speaker 12: No, sadly, shot in New York and New England.
- 1:16:01Speaker 9: This is the guy who made, you know, like, you know,
- 1:16:03Speaker 9: Squirm and Blue Science. He's done a lot of television work.
- 1:16:06Speaker 9: I see a lot of television work on his resume.
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: I want to hear these directors. The regression. Wasn't the
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: director's coffee? That would have made it better.
- 1:16:13Speaker 12: If I could listen to an hour and a half
- 1:16:15Speaker 12: of him explaining himself.
- 1:16:17Speaker 17: You know, I kind of want to rescind my, like,
- 1:16:20Speaker 17: thumbs up of this movie because I didn't really you
- 1:16:24Speaker 17: know like I went into this movie or I started
- 1:16:27Speaker 17: watching this movie and assumed that this was like a
- 1:16:28Speaker 17: new director starting out Because it's so low budget. But
- 1:16:33Speaker 17: the fact that the dude has been directing for 20
- 1:16:35Speaker 17: years kind of ruins it.
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: 30 years.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: 70.
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: This guy's been making movies longer than I've been making sounds.
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 1:16:49Speaker 17: Longer than I've been making sounds.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: I so want to throw this guy a bone.
- 1:16:53Speaker 9: He had to have some kind of weird cred to
- 1:16:54Speaker 9: get Plumber in this.
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:57Speaker 9: And I heard that this... I read somewhere this thing
- 1:16:59Speaker 9: premiered at Tribeca.
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it did.
- 1:17:01Speaker 9: Can you imagine the reception that kind of a film got?
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 1:17:05Speaker 8: That's it. They don't care. They'll like whatever they see
- 1:17:12Speaker 8: at those.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: So long as it's Tribeca, it's like, oh, my God,
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: what a nice satire.
- 1:17:17Speaker 12: They were making artsy choices at the film.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: Well, they made a bad horror movie to make fun
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: of how bad horror movies are.
- 1:17:24Speaker 17: I think if you... put something with, like, the right crowd,
- 1:17:28Speaker 17: they're going to pick out whatever meaning they want from it.
- 1:17:32Speaker 17: You know, like, I don't... I feel like, you know,
- 1:17:35Speaker 17: the way the boy was desensitized to violence was somewhat
- 1:17:38Speaker 17: of a commentary on, like, video game violence and things
- 1:17:42Speaker 17: like that. And, you know, like, the religious aspect.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: But.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: Satire is the conventional cinematography. Like I said, there are
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: little bits and pieces that are good.
- 1:17:54Speaker 9: It's just not brought forth properly.
- 1:17:59Speaker 17: But I feel like it was so... They didn't have
- 1:18:04Speaker 17: that much direction. They're just kind of throwing it in there.
- 1:18:06Speaker 17: Or maybe even it was stumbled upon accidentally.
- 1:18:09Speaker 10: Maybe it was an improv script. It was the best
- 1:18:11Speaker 10: in show treatment. It kind of made the scenes last.
- 1:18:16Speaker 11: Or maybe he was just I mean, you can have
- 1:18:18Speaker 11: actors that get gigs that.
- 1:18:20Speaker 8: Are just drunkards. Or, you know what I mean?
- 1:18:24Speaker 11: They have the chops. They're just not, they just can't
- 1:18:27Speaker 11: put their shit together. So people are like, it's a paycheck.
- 1:18:32Speaker 12: Actually, there was a moment in it where it felt
- 1:18:35Speaker 12: like in the middle with the little kid wandering around
- 1:18:36Speaker 12: in the basement and Satan telling him stupid things to do,
- 1:18:39Speaker 12: it felt like a sketch from Kids in the Hall.
- 1:18:42Speaker 12: And I really expected Bruce to be there going, this
- 1:18:45Speaker 12: one time, this kid at school?
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: He killed a bunch of people? but that's okay. Are
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: you God? I mean, I just, I really, it felt
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: like that for a minute.
- 1:18:55Speaker 12: And I was like, you know, if you did it
- 1:18:57Speaker 12: that way, like, this could almost be genius.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: Like, if you took the comedy that level... Yeah, I'd
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: watch that, I think, if you could get those guys involved.
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: I saw it was described on Netflix as a black comedy,
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: and I wonder if by them saying that, it's like
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: this get-out-of-jail-free.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: Oh, it's a black comedy. Yeah, I really feel that way.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: You're supposed to laugh at it. Yeah, I think I've
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: figured out that maybe the thing I wanted to make
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: the film, if anything, would have made the film better
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: for me, is that I kept getting hints of these
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: other weird storylines that I wasn't really getting. There was
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: the arsonist. There were the anarchists. There was the transvestite.
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: Valets.
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: We had the rich dude with the girlfriend who's obviously
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: half his age who he's saying, I know I don't
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: look old enough to have a kid. It's like, yes,
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: you do. You're old enough to have four.
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: This would explain the ending. They wanted sequels.
- 1:19:54Speaker 8: Here's the thing.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: I'm imagining a story Where we constantly segue between these
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: random people on the island and how they're spending their Halloween.
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: And in the middle of it is this utterly nonsensical
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: tale of this boy with this superhuman murderer running around
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: causing chaos. That then precipitates and affects everybody else. That's
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: a story I could kind of get into. Because then
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: it's just this weird nonsensical storyline at the heart of
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: these attempts to tell... more real so like an anthology
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: yeah like a trick or treat type thing except with
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: this utterly batshit crazy stupid idea in the middle of
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: it to drive the whole thing but.
- 1:20:36Speaker 12: What instead we're gonna get is Satan's little helper colon
- 1:20:40Speaker 12: Transvestite We're going to get a whole series Of all
- 1:20:44Speaker 12: the other We're going to get Rosencrantz and Guildenstern I
- 1:20:47Speaker 12: want them sitting around talking about their school loans And
- 1:20:50Speaker 12: how they're hoping That they're going to be able to
- 1:20:52Speaker 12: find jobs As designers We're never.
- 1:20:55Speaker 8: Going to make it on this island We're going to
- 1:20:57Speaker 8: get Satan's.
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: Little helper Well maybe this is.
- 1:21:00Speaker 13: Just like a weird adaptation Of Waiting for Godot And
- 1:21:03Speaker 13: we didn't realize it.
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: Because it was told from everybody else's perspective Well don't
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: you say Waiting for God Satan.
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: Is Godot was kind of like that right.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: Yeah especially and especially what tipped me off there was
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: when the anarchists are running around and one of the
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: guys in the masks like you know clap satan shoulders
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: and they look each other for like that like like
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: they know each other like hey it's you and i
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: was like oh my god are there more like him
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: just running around doing this and we haven't noticed like
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: you know we've just been following one.
- 1:21:30Speaker 12: All these other stories are going to come out in
- 1:21:32Speaker 12: the spin-off movies that are all happening at the same
- 1:21:35Speaker 12: time on this same day in the middle of the chaos.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: So our solution to how to make this movie better
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: is obviously just to make more of it.
- 1:21:43Speaker 12: To really make people suffer to expand it and its
- 1:21:47Speaker 12: dimensions and its scope the.
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: One thing that i that i did kind of like
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: about it was the really over the top miming what
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: if the movie had been everybody silent and just my.
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: Silent film oh wow it might have won an.
- 1:22:06Speaker 13: Oscar i think we're on the same wavelength because i
- 1:22:09Speaker 13: mean that's the whole thing with me putting it into
- 1:22:11Speaker 13: foreign language i'm.
- 1:22:12Speaker 9: Not gonna know what's going on and then.
- 1:22:14Speaker 13: It's just like that weird puzzlement like what is happening
- 1:22:17Speaker 13: here you think you'd be fine if you just turn
- 1:22:19Speaker 13: the sound down I could turn down the sound and
- 1:22:24Speaker 13: maybe put on some weird creepy coil.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: Or Apex Twin or something.
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: Take your 80s theme really slowed down.
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:22:34Speaker 9: Take the existing score.
- 1:22:35Speaker 13: Moving on up, moving on up.
- 1:22:39Speaker 12: Well, okay, we should wrap this up.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: We've gone way... Yes, please do. Come on, God. But
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: I did want to say you.
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: Is it Thanksgiving yet?
- 1:22:49Speaker 12: You mentioned this on Facebook, Greg, the fact that they
- 1:22:51Speaker 12: give you a promo for the movie in front of
- 1:22:54Speaker 12: the movie.
- 1:22:54Speaker 10: That's so weird.
- 1:22:55Speaker 6: Oh, right.
- 1:22:55Speaker 17: That was very strange.
- 1:22:56Speaker 10: See, I thought maybe that was Netflix or something. I
- 1:22:58Speaker 10: was like, why is he doing this?
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:23:00Speaker 12: As I watched it, though, I was like, it gives
- 1:23:02Speaker 12: you the whole movie. Like, you said we could wrap
- 1:23:03Speaker 12: it up in a half hour. In, like, two minutes,
- 1:23:06Speaker 12: it gives you just enough of the story that you
- 1:23:08Speaker 12: kind of know where everything's going. But short of the
- 1:23:10Speaker 12: very end, like, you know everything he's going to do
- 1:23:13Speaker 12: and the premise of what's going on.
- 1:23:15Speaker 3: In two minutes. They used to do that all the
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: time on TV in the late 70s. Like, tonight on
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: Battlestar Galactica.
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: That's what it felt like.
- 1:23:23Speaker 12: And again, it felt like a promo for a show
- 1:23:26Speaker 12: coming up on ABC Family.
- 1:23:27Speaker 6: True.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: Kind of what it was.
- 1:23:30Speaker 17: No, it reminded me of those weird movies from the 70s.
- 1:23:34Speaker 17: You remember that DVD of just like offbeat, terrible?
- 1:23:38Speaker 13: I like that Ben's like, it reminds me of those
- 1:23:40Speaker 13: movies from the 70s. Marla's like, no, it reminds me
- 1:23:43Speaker 13: of those.
- 1:23:44Speaker 8: Movies from the 70s.
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: No, I said TV shows.
- 1:23:48Speaker 17: No, I'm talking about specific movie clips. What was that
- 1:23:51Speaker 17: DVD that you had? Like the weird, weird world movies.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: Oh, the one that's just like the trailer?
- 1:23:58Speaker 17: Yeah, that's just trailers.
- 1:24:00Speaker 12: Yeah, it kind of would fit right in there.
- 1:24:03Speaker 17: What was that called?
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: I mean, it's just a collection of really bad.
- 1:24:06Speaker 17: Yeah, but there's like a name for that company that
- 1:24:08Speaker 17: does that.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: What is that?
- 1:24:11Speaker 13: It's not something weird thing, no.
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: I think it is, actually.
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: Something weird.
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: They do some of those compilations.
- 1:24:16Speaker 9: They have a lot of compilations.
- 1:24:17Speaker 12: It's one of those that's just a compilation of bad movies.
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: Epically bad trailers for them.
- 1:24:23Speaker 17: Yeah. The intro reminded me of a something weird trailer.
- 1:24:27Speaker 17: That's what I was getting at.
- 1:24:28Speaker 12: It would fit right in there because you'd look at
- 1:24:30Speaker 12: it and go, they didn't really make a movie about that, right?
- 1:24:33Speaker 12: Because many a time I say that watching those, I'm like,
- 1:24:35Speaker 12: that's not real, right?
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: And then you find out it is and we do
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: a whole.
- 1:24:39Speaker 11: Episode It is puzzling, the movies that get made and
- 1:24:42Speaker 11: then the ones that don't. You hear of people, oh,
- 1:24:46Speaker 11: they were going to do this, or somebody pitches a
- 1:24:49Speaker 11: script or something like.
- 1:24:50Speaker 8: That, and you're like, that would be great.
- 1:24:52Speaker 12: And then they make crap. That was my point at
- 1:24:55Speaker 12: the beginning. I'm like, they remade a movie of a
- 1:24:58Speaker 12: movie they just made last year, and that got greenlit,
- 1:25:01Speaker 12: and then somebody paid the money to make Satan's Little Helper.
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: By the end of the show, I'm like, I give up.
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: You can't make a good movie, I guess.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: These are the things people are throwing money at.
- 1:25:12Speaker 3: Well, maybe when they got the pitch for Satan's Little Helper,
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: they thought, oh, they're going to make a movie about
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: the Pee Wee's Big Adventure Biker Gang.
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: They kind of have a biker.
- 1:25:21Speaker 8: Gang in it, too. The little kids that were riding
- 1:25:24Speaker 8: around on the bikes.
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: It's a prequel.
- 1:25:25Speaker 8: They almost had.
- 1:25:28Speaker 13: They're still talking about this movie.
- 1:25:29Speaker 9: They can't stop talking about it.
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: It's an obsession.
- 1:25:32Speaker 8: The worse the movie is, the more we can talk
- 1:25:34Speaker 8: about it.
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: That's usually true, actually.
- 1:25:36Speaker 9: If it's the worst, there's plenty to talk about, but
- 1:25:38Speaker 9: this doesn't qualify as the worst.
- 1:25:39Speaker 12: It's worse in a different way.
- 1:25:42Speaker 9: You want to see bad Halloween, you need to see Hack-O-Lantern.
- 1:25:44Speaker 10: Next Halloween.
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: If we can get hold of it. I love Hack-O-Lantern.
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: I love it.
- 1:25:51Speaker 9: It is atrocious.
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: We'll start working. There's the teaser for next year, next Halloween.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: You're going to end it on a cliffhanger?
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: See, that's how we end. As long as we end it.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: That's going to go for a couple years. No way.
- 1:26:05Speaker 8: Is it tomorrow yet?
- 1:26:07Speaker 5: Almost.
- 1:26:08Speaker 17: What was the name of that terrible Thanksgiving movie that
- 1:26:10Speaker 17: we watched?
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: Thanksgiving?
- 1:26:11Speaker 17: No, no.
- 1:26:13Speaker 13: Are you talking about Blood Freak?
- 1:26:15Speaker 9: Blood Freak.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: Blood Freak.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: Now see that?
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: Now that's a film.
- 1:26:17Speaker 13: That's a classic. And again that goes back to what
- 1:26:21Speaker 13: I was saying earlier. You watch it and it's like
- 1:26:23Speaker 13: I feel like the lead is really fucking trying to
- 1:26:25Speaker 13: make that paper mache turkey head work his advantage.
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: He's trying.
- 1:26:29Speaker 12: That one they were trying to make an awesome movie
- 1:26:32Speaker 12: in their mind.
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: They were. Where this I don't ever get that.
- 1:26:35Speaker 12: I feel like this is mediocre even to the people
- 1:26:37Speaker 12: that clock in.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: Like you said. Nobody cares about this.
- 1:26:41Speaker 11: Well that's the sad part about it is that you
- 1:26:43Speaker 11: can tell it's people it's competently made you can.
- 1:26:47Speaker 13: Tell they're going through the motions yeah.
- 1:26:48Speaker 12: There's no they all know their job and they're doing
- 1:26:51Speaker 12: their job except the writer and the actors that have
- 1:26:55Speaker 12: never worked and never work again yeah.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: It's happy halloween happy halloween.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: I think we should escape this movie.
- 1:27:09Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next week.
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: Same geek time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:28:23Speaker 14: Pack up your sins and go to the devil in Hades.
- 1:28:28Speaker 14: You'll meet the finest of gentlemen and the finest of ladies.
- 1:28:34Speaker 14: They'd rather be down below than up above. Hades is
- 1:28:39Speaker 14: full of thousands of Joneses and Browns, O'Hooley and Coens
- 1:28:45Speaker 14: and Grady's You'll hear a heavenly tune that went to
- 1:28:50Speaker 14: the devil Because the jazz bands They started picking it
- 1:28:56Speaker 14: Then put a trick in it A jazzy kick in
- 1:28:58Speaker 14: it They've got a couple of old reformers in heaven
- 1:29:03Speaker 14: making them go to bed at 11. Pack up your
- 1:29:07Speaker 14: sins and go to the devil and you'll never have
- 1:29:10Speaker 14: to go to bed at all.
- 1:29:57Speaker 7: I hope you haven't taken my stories too seriously.
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: I hope you haven't taken my stories too.
- 1:30:13Speaker 19: Seriously This episode is a production of Movie Meltdown, produced
