- 0:05SPEAKER_03: Alfredo.
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: Welcome to Let's Stay Together, brought to you by Y Won.
- 0:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, how to how to introduce this guy.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: We're lucky enough to gain another player who's way better than us on the podcast of Third World Player of the Year.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: I'm going to butcher your name, so we'll start off there.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: I've already called you Arthur because I'm English.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: First of all, how's it going?
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: And secondly, how do you say your name?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Thanks a lot.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Thanks a lot for having me.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: You did well.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: You did well.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I couldn't say it better, especially in English.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: So I'm happy.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: I'm happy the way you said it.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: You want to chime in?
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Phil has uh Phil is like notorious for really butchering everything that's close to Holland.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Uh uh what what was last week?
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: You said oh yeah, Eva de Hude.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Eva de Hude was his uh was his way of saying it.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Belgium Belgium is even worse usually.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: To be fair, to be fair, Dutch names aren't the easiest to say in uh in English.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And some of those names questionable.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: You're just gonna start being nice to me at least at the start.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: You've got to be polite.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: You've got to be like, yeah, you're saying the name fine.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: All right, yeah.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: Um, well, first of all, like I said, thank you for coming on.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: Um I'm gonna get straight on to just introducing you if anyone doesn't know who Arthur is.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: But the first difficulty I had when I was trying to do my research was that I don't know how many caps you've got because there was four different websites said four different things.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: So it was ranged between 220 and 250 caps.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: Um, all of them said 10 goals.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: Is that is that right?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: The 10 goals I'm not sure.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: The the caps, the caps I I uh coincidentally know because I I just celebrated 250.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: So uh so two yeah, so 250 is uh the right the right number.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Wow, literally uh the one against Germany.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, good idea.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: So that's cat that's the you in that game it's the we won 6-3, you were captain, you got your 250.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Is that right?
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Uh uh yeah, the Sloven was the was the captain.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: We're doing we're doing uh one and one.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Uh but I was celebrating at 250.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: Amazing.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: Well, first of all, congratulations.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: I'll try I'll try and crack on.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: You you've there's a quite a long list, so you've won everything.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Um the Olympics in 2021, uh the World Cup 2018, Europeans 2019.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: You are a two times world player of the year, well renowned as one of the best fullbacks ever.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: Um, you I'm sure is gonna ask some questions like can you teach me to play better hockey?
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, we're really, really lucky to have you on.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: We're gonna try and keep this semi-serious um and semi-not serious.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: Um, but firstly, yeah, I I guess I just want to start by touching on that fact that you are a two-time world player of the year.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: I think you're respected around the world as one of the best players of this generation.
- 3:30SPEAKER_03: I'll hit you with a semi-decent question.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: Like, like have you got an how you see the game and uh how you play the game, why is it so easy for you?
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, uh it's obviously uh not easy, uh, but but nice.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Uh I think uh to start off, I've always just loved the game.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: I think that was that was probably and and is still why I I quite like to have conversations with people, think about the game, and um and just rate uh the the very difficult but simple stuff.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Uh and I think I was lucky enough to yeah uh quite early in my career have some uh very interesting and and impressive people around me, and that sort of made me uh yeah love it even more and and also rate sort of uh all those all those the the basic stuff and I think that that that bass sort of made me the the the player uh that I that I that I became uh so uh so yeah I think though yeah write off I think that's that's sort of uh that's sort of why I I also yeah loved skills from from different uh different players and and something that everybody sort of always like what the fuck I could also just really enjoy um uh like uh other teams or or players from other teams do really nice stuff.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: That that could also sort of make me uh semi semi-happy, even though sometimes it was uh it was against my own uh you're enjoying like your curious.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: I had a very I had a very painful moment like this uh on uh Sunday when we played against Belgium.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: I think and I see already a little smile on Arthur's face.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: We had a we had a really uh how do you say it?
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Like we were really we had a really shitty game on Saturday against Germany, and we thought Sunday against Belgium, okay, let's do one thing, let's start really sharp.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: Let's make sure we are there from the get-go.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: 20 seconds into the game, Arthur decides to run in with the ball and play a backhand diagonal over 60 yards into the forehead of I don't know who.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: First attack, 1-0 down, 20 seconds into the game.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Like, so they were all my hopes and this, but I've I kind of um found myself really appreciative because I can if there's someone who can who can appreciate a good diagonal ball as me, I really appreciated it, even though I was really like fuming with with how we started the game.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: But I was kind of like, oh, I went, I think I went to Wotto, he's a good friend of both me and uh Arthur.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: And I said to him, gotta give it to him.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: What's a really cool part?
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: I actually remember what I was I was watching that and thinking normally you wait at least a few minutes to pull out the reverse stick over 50 yards, but you're like, oh, they're pressing me.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: Okay, I'll just slide onto my left, just nail a backhand perfectly.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, look, Tom Bones scored perfect.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Because usually you don't really have that in the back, the back and diagonal.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: I think uh before we go into the the the joke and the joke um sort of part of it, I think um it's it's interesting because obviously you um you and myself we've we've touched on both generations, uh the older ones and uh and now the newer ones.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: I think it's quite interesting to see how how the game is developing with a lot of uh lifting skills and more elimination skills, which uh which is uh obviously very nice, very interesting, and very difficult to uh to defend.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: And I think in in smaller spaces, the way teams are are uh are defending, I think it's it's it's it's necessary.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Although I hope that that the younger generation, the generation after that, um they do under or never underestimate the power of a first touch or the the power of just simple basics.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: And if you look at and you you will uh you will have played with him, I think, but if you look at the the quality pass, like the the shooting pass of Wouter Yoli, for example, uh like he could he could rock up now uh without any warm-up, he could hit you 10 balls, they would be perfectly flat, and he would he would hit a target of of 10 centimeters uh with a hitting with a hitting pass.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Uh the the first touch of of of Thierry Bringman or guys like that.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: I think uh the just the the pure the pure quality and pure class of so those simple skills uh should should never be underestimated.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: And I think that's uh that will be the the most important sort of I think aim for for the generations after when we are a long long away and retired.
- 8:28SPEAKER_03: I totally agree, and I think there's something that me and you both have always agreed on.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: We disagree on a few things, but like the purest purest hockey, like enjoying how the game is played, like the the beautiful game is how they say in football, but like watching people execute amazingly simple skills so beautifully well is something that we all love and appreciate in our game that's becoming ever more tactical, ever more um like running conditioning focused, you know.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: The beautiful game still wants to uh exist.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: Um and I guess going on from that, I think your first cap was is either again 2012 or 2013.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: 2012, yeah.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: 2012, the end of the end of 2012.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Um, so I got called up just after the Olympics of London.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: Um and uh and I think I got called up in November and in December.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Uh at that time there was still still the Champions Trophy, still one of the historically, I think one of the most sort of beautiful uh real hockey trophies.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: The sort of big ones excluded.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, and so that was in Australia, and I I opened against Australia.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: So that was my literally my first gap without any uh that was in the time where you yeah, you just rocked up, put your shin pads on, and and you went and played the game.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: There was no practice games, there was no uh it was just it was just yeah, I've come out there, try to try to play it to the right colour, and uh we go on.
- 10:04SPEAKER_03: We've definitely been talking about bringing the champions trophy back, it was something that everyone loved playing in, and I think the fans enjoy watching.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: Um, but you were one of the probably the late comers to the golden Belgian generation, where you know you start you started off as the nearly men, the the you know, I remember you were winning uh World League silver the following year, and then you go on, you start having success, you start knocking on the door, gets to Rio, you you you win uh Olympic silver again, everyone's saying, Okay, they've got the talent, they've got the class, have they got the stuff to get over the line?
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: And then suddenly, you know, 2018 hits and like you you open that door.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Um and I guess the question is like, do you have any of the what was it like to be a part of that group that played together for such a long time?
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: Um, such a group of world-class players, and what was it like playing with them guys?
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: And do you think that it was the fact that you were all so good and you played together for so long that led to such success for you know four years?
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, it it was uh it was one hell of a journey, and it was um yeah, it was uh super interesting because if you we always compare it or I always compare it to uh the Dutch, if if you're a young Dutch kid, um you get taught how to play Dutch hockey very, very early.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: If you're a German kid, for example, the German style is very clear.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: There is you get taught a a a certain way of playing hockey if you if you start playing uh hockey in Germany.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: And yeah, we sort of sat in a room and and sort of started discussing about if if people wanted to come to Belgium hockey game, yeah, what what do they actually want to see or what do do we want them to sort of see and feel?
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Because the Belgium hockey identity, because of because hockey was also yeah fairly small in Belgium, um yeah, it it was sort of an identity that that we could shape uh a little bit and and being being good uh was was certainly not enough.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: And I think you see it uh it in in hockey in in every generation, also in the one in the one now, just being a good hockey player or having good hockey players in a team, yeah, will never get you uh on the top of the podium.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: That that's just simply not enough.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Uh and and the same applies for just being very fit is is not going to be enough.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: You need all those uh all those qualities linked up and and everything has to fall in into uh into place.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: And I think just being around that that sort of evolution uh yeah has been has been uh immensely interesting and and and all has also shaped me a little bit sort of uh besides Hoki now.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Uh and and people forget so and and also people in the in uh us as well, we we romanticize now because of a a period we've done well, but we forget sometimes that we've we've lost uh we've probably lost eight finals prior to to then winning three in a row.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Uh but those three and and that that sort of period in in in those three and a half, four and a half years depends a little bit on how you uh also the COVID period in between.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, that was that was just a period where we we felt untouchable.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: And um, and that was yeah, that that's obviously a a special feeling, but but in and around that, yeah, we've uh we've done and that's uh that's the same for for every national team.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, you do you do so much work besides the hockey pitch, and that's in the end the one that that probably pushes you just over the limit.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: You're talking about that like you've you created uh your own identity, your own values, and that's that's the the strong thing that brought you together and pushed you over the line.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Exactly, exactly.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: So yeah, you you start you start getting to know people um and and and the the the sort of persons beside the the hockey player, and and you have to go way deeper into personalities uh beyond, yeah, but I want it a little bit more uh outside my sort of foreign or or yeah, yeah, I like I like uh contact when uh in a in a duel or something, you go way deeper.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: And why?
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Because yeah, it's not a tournament is long, and the and the the the hockey team that starts a hockey tournament is never the same that ends it, uh, even though the names are the same on paper.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: There is always shit happening into uh in a tournament and and ups and downs and stuff.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: So it's not if something's going to happen, it's when.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: And the work you do besides hockey pitch prepares you on how you will react a little bit on it.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: And obviously the hockey part is is uh is very important.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Don't underestimate me wrong, but to be on top of a podium of uh of a of a tournament of the magnitude of world cups and and olympics, yeah, there is there is far more than um than hitting a nice a nice pass or uh or making a nice tackle.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: So that's you you too.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: No, sorry, but how did like uh how did you guys because that's always what like kind of question I always have, it's like Belgium was like pretty uh a non-factor in hockey for I think a long period until I think maybe 2011, 2012 was the or not uh 2013, 2014 was the first time you really like got on the stage where you I think you reached the final of the European Cup in Bone, was it right?
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: But like how did you guys were also a bit lucky with your generation or did something change already in the under-16s, under 18s, or like what what made the because like you can have a really good infrastructure or whatever, but still you need the players to like uh get this potential because if you're honest, also the team you guys have and had in the last couple years was also like full of quality, like the the team in uh in Paris as well.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Like I I said to Phil, I think last week or the week before, it's still one of the better teams I've I've seen, but you just played one shitty game in the quarter final.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Like what there still needs to happen something before you actually get 16 world-class players on the pitch, you know what I mean?
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Exactly, yeah, exactly.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: And you're 100% right.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: And yeah, you need a little bit of luck uh with with the people in in a federation, and you need some some people that yeah, that start knocking on doors.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: And uh, yeah, there were a few in the in the in the Belgium um sort of hockey history then uh that 10 years before Rio, they they literally said, Okay, we're going to play the long game.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: And in Rio, we want we want um our teams to be on the podium or are or really really gunning for uh for for gold.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: For medal.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: And yeah, for a medal, yeah.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: And and yeah, obviously they they wanted they wanted uh they they saw it, they saw it big.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Because they said, okay, we're going to push now for everything you said.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: So infrastructure, um, also um the the people, the coaches, the the the the really push the standards up, uh the quality of trainings, the the the material, everything.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: So and that started with under 16s, but started even before that.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: Um so uh you have regionally you have uh sort of then the best players uh of of of their their uh their age group.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: One of those exactly one of those or a few of those get all pushed into into one uh one team, and they already get prepared for the under-15s, they get pushed to 16, they get and and so they really made sure that that that whole generation got pushed uh from a young age, uh, and and not only pure basics but understanding of the game, uh social skills uh in and around teams.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: And I think in the end, 10 years later, yeah, that's really where you you saw those benefits.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: And and they started with the generation to to make you understand uh that they they did quite well.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: So they start with the generation of uh Vanobel, Lapart, Bochar, Denayer.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Denier is a little bit older, but let me Gunnar Cousins.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: I think of that generation got a big international career, and probably six six of them got a gold medal at the Olympics.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, of one generation, of a team of 16 young uh young boys.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: So that's that's quite uh that's quite crazy.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: It's really interesting as well because like it's a it's an incredibly patient person to make that plan because everyone wants success now or they want it in two years' time.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: Or but for someone to sit and say we've got a generation of players, we've got a uh we've got a plan, a 10-year plan, and for it to actually become good, it's it's it's it's an amazing story because in sport everyone just is greedy and they just want it now.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: Um so I I we've society even.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, society even for sure.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: And we talk about like who's the teams that need to do that, like who are the teams that need a you know a four to eight year plan now, and you just say, okay, scrap the next two years, it's all about us realizing we have a generation or realizing that we need to get rid of the dead wood.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: Um, because more teams probably need to go through that um to actually have a mental success.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: I would calm down a bit, Philip, because they're like like if if you give this idea and someone of England hockey listens, like you might be on the on the cutting board, and your generation will be like completely lost.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: So, like like tone it down a bit, maybe.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Maybe they don't listen, otherwise we'd be in death trouble.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: No, it is true, it is true, and um I can obviously only speak for Belgium, but if I look now, uh and and that's been that we that's been quite nice to see.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: If I look now at the the and we're we're talking about the young young kids now, but uh uh obviously with all respect, but uh they are a little bit younger than us, so let's refer to them as but if I see the young guys that come in now, their their their base level and their base understanding of the game is is already so high that yeah, they are they have been prepared a perfect way, let's say.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: And so that that's the gap where when we were younger, the gap between under 21 and and uh and the first team was was massive.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: And now it also physically that's that gap isn't isn't that big anymore.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: At least they need a little bit of an adaptation period.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: But but physically and also mentally they are they are a lot of those guys are in perfect shape to uh yeah to straight away uh run into uh into an international program like that.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think right now the only difference is in in like pace of play and like tempo more uh rather than like the physical aspect of it.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Because sometimes I see young guns look at me, 29, talking about young guns, but like young guys coming coming in coming in, like and I I get I get I know what Phil's going to say.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: Like I'm I'm the last one to talk about uh physical appearance uh because I still have a 16-year-old body, but like I mean more like the guys that come in now, they really are athletes already.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: And imagine imagine this 10 years ago, like me coming into national team.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: That's like Yeah.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: Also, well, I mean that you you got your you got your new FIFA card, didn't you?
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: You got a new FIFA card made by you.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: I got it sent to me like three times, being like, Why is this physicality to
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: That looks it it kind of um I have the shirt of the Dutch team as a good fit, so I look a bit uh more um bustler than I am.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: I think you only you only fall on the physicality because I'm because I'm like um uh a bit scrony, but like I I am I have good you're quite fast.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: You're quite fast, huh?
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: I'm quite fast, I don't get injured a lot, knock on wood.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Like I'm physically I'm pretty okay.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: I know Matthew asked, are physical trainers listening to this, and I'll get a text or whatever.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: This the moment he listens to it and says, no, you don't, your physique is shit.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: But like it's it's not that bad, Philip.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: It's it's at least a 65 or something.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: No, I've I I admitted that.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: I I righted my wrongs last week.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: I said I complimented you, I'm not gonna do it again.
- 22:49SPEAKER_03: I'm not I'm not doing that.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: Um right, we'll get back to just some of the I guess the interview style questions after like uh it's really interesting conversation and something that yeah, I haven't thought about it in in that way before.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: But uh I guess getting on to like specifics of the players you've played with, who's who's the person that you looked up to firstly, and then uh secondly, who's who's the favourite player that you've played with in the last you know your career of 11 years?
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: That's uh oof.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Uh that's a great yeah, that's that's putting me on the spot.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, looking up to players it it was it was sort of different.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Because the Belgium national team when we were really young uh wasn't on a highest podium.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: So it it it wasn't that we that you sort of had role models uh or a lot of role models.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: There was not a lot of hockey on um on TV, but all that also uh made sort of the best uh the best memories because with my brother we uh in the the the Beijing Olympics we put we put our um uh alarm at at three o'clock or four o'clock, not even sure what it was.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: And because it was there was so little hockey on TV, uh yeah, it it was a a big happening uh when when it when it was on TV.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: So uh so yeah, I that were my first real hockey memories on TV, where yeah we sort of really really said to each other we would love we would love to be there one day and and uh and and looking at at those those guys.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: The best player I've played with, yeah, it's it's difficult because a lot of guys had different skills that I really really highly uh highly rated.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: We'll let you off.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: You can say you can say all of them.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: No, no, not all of them, for sure not.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: Uh the the one that that did always perform uh when it was important was Van Obel.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: So if I do have to say one guy, uh it was because of ridiculous skills, but he he always turned up when it was important.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: And I I think if we combined with his abilities as a hockey player, I think that I would put him probably just above uh just above the rest.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: So if I if I do have to put someone forward, it will be it will be him.
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: Another good guy, another one of the good guys.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: But is he uh uh a podcast friend?
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he listens to a lot of podcasts, that's true.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we don't really like him on this podcast.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: We don't really like him.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Oh no?
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: No, we don't know.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: We we he's been on the podcast once and we give him a shitload of credits because we like I think we think he deserved to be like at least win, uh, or at least nominated once for world player of the year, and he's never been nominated, I think.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: And I think he should at least be nominated, or at least should have won it once.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Um uh yeah, so I think uh if I look at the players you've played with, you have a pretty pretty sick list.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: You also played with Dwyer, did you?
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: Like it wasn't in his prime, but you also played with him, right?
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: I never I never played with Dwyer.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: No, I missed him twice.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: I missed him twice.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Once when I arrived at Blumenthal was the year he left.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: Uh and uh I I I got a call from the last year of the Hockey India League, so prior to uh obviously now, uh I I think it was 2017.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: I got a call from Roland Oldman saying, Yeah, uh Dwyer is injured.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Do you want to uh do you do you want to replace him?
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: A like for like switch.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure if you uh have seen me play, but I'm a different, I'm a different type of player.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: So uh so we I missed him twice, which is uh which yeah, I find uh a pity because he was obviously uh something really special, and I think uh something that or someone rather that pushed our sport uh into uh into uh yeah a very good direction.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Do you think you're do you think you're in the same uh like it's tough to say about yourself?
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Have you like do you think you're in the same boat as like the likes of Dwyer, uh De Neueg, uh Poamat, like those guys?
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: Or do you is it tough?
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: I know it's tough to say about yourself.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: Do you feel like you're uh it's not tough.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: I don't I I don't think so.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: I don't think so.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Uh uh what I did I did understand quite early in my career is that you need everybody around you uh to uh yeah to really perform and do and do well.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: But if I do have to pride myself with a quality, it's probably that uh I made myself look very, very good around a lot of a lot of very talented players.
- 27:55SPEAKER_03: And before the last question before we get on to the um before we go into a break, is that you first well, what's your relationship with the Star Awards?
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Because you were probably the last person to win it, you won it two times in a row.
- 28:11SPEAKER_03: And um like you were talking about, I think there's a there's a general understanding across like international players that yeah, I speak personally when I've spoken to other internationals, is that you've been at right at the top for you know, since we're talking 2017.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Um you've kind of set a set a standard where even you can't quite hit that.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: I think people are holding you to an immeasurable standard.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: Um you you obviously won the award twice.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: Have you been bitter's the wrong word, but have you been a bit unhappy that you know, like are you feeling like you're being held to this immeasurable standard that you set?
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Um it's a good question.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Uh uh a thing that someone said to me that that will sort of uh stick with me, and I think that was it it was quite a valuable comment.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Uh in the end, the first time everybody's happy.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: First time it's the first time you win something, even if it's uh if it's a team um a team thing, everybody's happy.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: This individual word, uh everybody's super happy and super proud.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: And and uh and you're a guy that that that keeps a little bit both feet on the ground, so it doesn't really, really mind.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: But after that, uh everything you do starts starts being uh starts being yeah wrong, let's say.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: So imagine yeah, exactly.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: So and you you're still doing the exact same thing, which is fine, uh but you just have to live live with or learn to live with it a little bit.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: But one thing uh someone said which is very valuable is that um you don't have to you don't have to forget how you arrived at the at the point of of that award or how people at that point valued you.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Because after that you you you you have the feeling that you have to do stuff or you you start yeah and you start doing stuff that you think that people expect from you.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: But in the end, yeah, that's a completely wrong way of of looking at it.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: You arrive at a certain point by doing certain stuff really well, and you don't have to underestimate, you have to value, and you have to keep doing what actually brought you there in the first place, and I think that's quite a uh a good way of looking at it.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Uh because otherwise, yeah, you start you start doing stuff because you think other people expect it from you, but that's yeah, that's like a a leader thing.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: It's like if you get voted in as a captain, you you don't suddenly change because you suddenly think, Oh, I'm the captain, I've got to do X, Y, and Z.
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: People asked you, and you're wanting to be that because of the qualities you brought before you had the armband.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: Exactly, that's a perfect example.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: But doesn't it like sometimes like bother you a bit?
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: Because that's I think what Philip is also trying to get at is like um like I think we still think here that you're still one of the top, if not the top player in the world, but because the level you've reached in the past was so ridiculously high that you still reach a ridiculously high level, but people will not see it as such because you've um not gotten to that point uh anymore in your like you were.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: I think the it I think was 1617 or 1760, whatever.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: Like in that era, I think you were like you there was like no debate, and now other people have also come onto the scene, like also gotten like better, but you still got a really high level.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: But like, does it like bother you that people don't look at in that aspect of now?
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: They don't even know what I mean.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: I understand I understand your question.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: Um I understand your question.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: It's it's not something that I've that I've thought about like that, uh, but I I completely understand the question.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: What I do feel about myself is in the past and and when you're a little bit younger, uh you you're you're a little bit more selfish, you you try to burst into onto the scene or at least push your level so you yeah you get your spot in the team.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: Um and and you get a lot of satisfaction from from playing well yourself.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: If I compare it now towards uh where I am in my career, uh you also start getting a lot of satisfaction of just yeah seeing the the the the process and the whole progress of of different uh youngsters or people or or or a collective in that way.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: I think if I compare it, if I compare it to um yeah to the beginning of my career, I think that's also what changed quite a lot.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: And then if if people don't actually uh value my my own my own um uh games the way they used to, yeah, to be fair, that's their right, uh and that's also not really my concern, to be fair.
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: So uh you're not worried about external validation of your game, you know what you've achieved.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: You've you've you are playing your own game because that's how you love playing the game, and it doesn't matter if they call you a world player, it doesn't matter you know that that's okay by you.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Is that is that what you're exactly and to be fair, I I I also I also think uh uh uh a lot of other people deserve it.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: So so that that also makes it quite easy.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: Uh I think I I I I've very much enjoyed how uh how hockey is developing, especially the the skill part.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm not really uh 100% uh happy with with the the part that a lot of teams are playing a low block.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: I think that that doesn't really that doesn't really put our sport into the right value.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, although I I think with with uh with the change the change rule of the high balls, um uh that that will that will eliminate a little bit more of the importance of high balls.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: Uh not completely eliminate it, but I think it it will benefit uh it will benefit the play.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: Uh and for me that the the low block it will be a uh a period.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: It will it will I I hope it will not hold up.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: It will be passages of play, of course, because you will always always have to when your man down or when you're really under under siege.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: I you you have to, of course.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: Uh but I'm I'm not sure that a lot of a lot of teams are going to play that uh the biggest part of their of their game.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Uh I I do think the new highball rule is is beneficial to the low block though.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Like it used to be that when you throw an aerial into space, you needed to wait for control, and it like was really like you could get easy corners, but just throwing an aerial to the corner.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: If someone steps in a bit too early, you get a corner.
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: Now, I feel like the last couple games, as soon as you threw a high ball, even if you were on three meters, but you just started attacking and you yelled five, you were okay.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: True, but it will it will benefit uh open play.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: So it will not be that in in in pressures moments, uh, it will not be that you you straight away get in out of a um out of out of a pressure moment by just hitting a guy uh a long way away, and you have to stay away, and then in the end, you'll have to run back because yeah a fault was um was whistled.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: I think it will it will it will enable and and push open play again so there will be a lot more uh pressure moments and and um and and turnover moments.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: And in and and to be fair, turnover moments is what coaches hate, but what supporters.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: It's it's as simple as that.
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's actually something we haven't talked about in the pub, which we should talk about.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: It's like what rule changes or what slight intricacies could be made to our sport to make it more like we've already been talking about, so it's not as tactical, it's not as like these teams are finding ways to win, but it's like you know, we want thousands of people at every game, you want TV shows to show our game, you want the game to grow.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: You know, a lot of sports make changes to make that happen.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: I wonder if the stuff that you know they brought the the quarters in to try and entice it.
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: What I think that's done is actually made it more tactical.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: So that that's already an easy one.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: We can we can brush over.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: You eliminate the quarters again.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Um I think that will that will be that will be only beneficial.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: We go back to uh to two times 35 or 2 times 30.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: I think that will be that will that will push teams into moments where they are a little bit more fatigued, uh some some mistakes are made, and and and that will be only only beneficial.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: I think that's uh that's already something that that will uh that will be beneficial for uh for the for the sport.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: That's that's that's my vision for sure.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna try and come up with some more of them in the next few weeks, maybe.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: Arthur, you can write back into us if you've got any ideas about how to uh how to improve the game, make it more uh like how it used to be, where a bit more run and gun, as we like to, as you termed it.
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: But um, right, we're gonna come back straight after after the break.
- 37:26SPEAKER_03: Right, we're back.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: Before we get on to some uh start bench sell, Arthur uh you's got a we do something called Yupe in the Coop where he just uh takes his takes the reins and and does what he wants basically.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: Um I just wanted to bring up whether or not you remember this or not, but uh it's a really memory that came back to me this week when Yupe said you're gonna come on the pod.
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: But we were playing an EHL bronze medal match um in 2017 at Dragons.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: I think you were you're in like your last season of Dragons.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: Um after the time we beat you 8-0 with uh when we were still good.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Oranye Road had just beat us 8-0, and um I was probably in the angriest stage of my of my uh of my career, and the game afterward, like I think losing to you 3-1, and I've just hit complete red wall, and I've decided to smash a ball through a D when the whistler just gone.
- 38:22SPEAKER_03: And um, I think one of your teammates, like Tys, had come and grabbed me around the neck, and there's like a big scuffle.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: And uh It was a big guy, also.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was I at the time I wasn't scared, but I should have been.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: Um and at the end of the game, I knew you played, I played you a few times, and I went up and I was like, Look, it's you know, like my bad or whatever.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: And you were like, Yeah, yeah, yeah, we'll see you in the next couple of years.
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: And I was like, I was like, I couldn't tell if it was like almost like a threat or like a nice thing.
- 38:53SPEAKER_03: And then I was like, I wonder, like, he's quite good, and then like you went on to become the world player for the next tiers.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: And I looked back at one point and I was like, Motherfucker.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: Motherfucker.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: It was a threat.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: It was a threat.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: No, I it's yeah, I don't remember, man.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: I don't I'll get on the archives.
- 39:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, clip.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: To be fair, during the whistle times, I'm probably not the nicest, but but after, um I I rarely make I really make big threats.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: You can you can vouch for me.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's he's a he's a really sweet guy.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: Like he acts, he's one of those guys who acts really tough on the hockey pitch, but is actually uh I wouldn't say a bitch, but he's like a really nice guy.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: He's like a really sweet guy.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't I would never even say you fucker.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: What the fuck?
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: What?
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: He's a sweet guy.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: He doesn't what do you you you do fuck all like what are you going to do?
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: This is my thing.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: This is always my thing on a hockey pitch.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: Everyone ex stuff on a hockey pitch, no one ever does fucking shit.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: No one ever, no one ever, everyone goes into a scuffle and starts being like uh Billy Big Boss.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: No one actually does something.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: Everyone says, Yeah, I'll fuck you up, fuck you up this one.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: No one does.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: Everyone just ex stuff on the side and everyone else push jumping and then they go play money.
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: You you also just said Arthur was like a like uh getting stuck in, but I always think you were like too you're too casual for it.
- 40:24SPEAKER_03: It's like it almost becomes too natural for you.
- 40:26SPEAKER_03: It's like, oh maybe I'll just maybe I'll just hit a reverse tip pass past him and I'll be fine.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: It doesn't seem that Arthur had a big like was Billy Big Boss to you, Phil, or wasn't he?
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: No, yeah, I'm I'm saying like as the general person it's not your anymore.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: It's a no no no he said at the at the end of the game.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: I feel like you're missing the point.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: I'm saying like Arthur's personality from what I've got against him, playing against him, is not like a a big I am, like it's more just I'm better than you.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: Well, that's that is that is in 99.9% of the time it's true, so that's not really something we can like knock on.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: But I I don't I think that's what you asked.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: Arthur, I can vouch for him.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: He's always like calm.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: Uh well not calm, you're not calm.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: Next to the pitch.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: Next to the pitch.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: Next to next to the pitch, you're like you're you're a really good guy.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: You he does he does show up a little uh little less at our uh at our friend at like our friends' gatherings, which which we which we don't like, but I'll I'll let it slide.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: But in the field, you can be you can be kind of kind of he actually trash talked me once, but like it's not really trash talk, but we played against uh I had this, it was like five years ago, I had this one trick at a long corner.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: I think you were on my team fill, even and I did like the fake back and then started running with the ball at a long corner, and then I play play Blumenau, and I thought, oh, I'm gonna do my little trick here, my fake, like the one you know, the goal when Ye scored at the European Cup against Germany with the fake backhand, and then he scored.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know it, Artu.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: I kind of like mimicked it and it worked twice, and then I played Blumenau, and then Artu, before I even wanted to do it, Artu yelled, yeah, wait for the fake, wait for the fake, and then I was okay.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: Do I do the fake now or do I not do the fake now?
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: I did the fake, and then he yelled, yep, there it is, and then I played it back.
- 42:21SPEAKER_03: That's when you like get into the get into the people's head where you're like, Oh, go on, pass it backwards, pass it backwards.
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: When you're just shouting at them, he always passes it backwards, and then you make them try and take you on, and then normally, if it's against an Indian, never do that against an Indian because they will take you on.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they always always.
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: Well, Brendan, Brendan's not here, but he got the best of it when when when Mark when he mistrapped the high ball and Mark Norse yelled over the entire pitch, press him, he's fucking shy.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: I think in in all fairness, in all fairness, um, I think I I don't really like quotes, but uh I I never actually considered myself um to be one of the best.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: And I think the the the way to look at it is also a little bit like that.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: And in in the quote, uh uh play like a champion, train like an underdog, as I said, it's not that I I I actually don't really like quotes, but in that saying, I think if you if you look at it like that, that will always that will always push you uh push you forward.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: And I and I I never actually uh I never actually sort of thought of myself as as the best.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: And I think that that's also um I think that's also quite important to keep your feet on the ground because otherwise uh you'll be uh you'll be far gone way too quickly.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: And that's I mean, yeah, w we've tried to keep this light hearted, but you are um yeah, sending out some really inspiring messages for for any any young avid hockey players listening.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: So please do Take notes to inter intermittent with our um Is he starting to rap, Phil?
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: Or is this the part where he reps or yeah?
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: Well it is time for the for the coupe hoop, so you've got a long coop, so let's get it's been it's been like for uh and don't think Artur listens a lot, um but it's it's been a bit uh uh too serious for too long for my uh for my uh attention span.
- 44:30SPEAKER_01: Uh which we okay vouch for I try to be on my best behavior for a long time.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: But I actually have some good some good questions.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: We do uh this thing, uh start bench cell.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: Uh I think you know it, it's like the equivalent of uh fuck Mary Kill, but then with hockey players, yeah.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: Okay, would you uh start bench cell?
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: Uh uh Niklas Beller, Florent van Albow or Cherry Brigman?
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: Jongens, jongens, jongens.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: Talking prime here.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: Start bench sell.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: I think I I would go for this one.
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: I I would sell Thierry Brigman.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: He has a very, very big name in hockey, he's a captain of the national team, he will bring me in a lot of money.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, he's going this route, he's going politically correct.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: No, no, he's asked me a question.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: I respond.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, go on.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: I would I would um bench Wellen because of the simple fact that he fucked us over in the World Cup.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: Everything he touched went in, scored shootouts uh with his eyes with his eyes closed.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: He was on the second post, balls just um just dropped in front of him uh while he was FaceTiming his little his kid.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: Everything was the week of his life.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: Uh so so uh just for that fact, because I it still hurts me a little bit, I would bench him and I would then start uh final bill.
- 46:03SPEAKER_03: I would I would have the same, but do the opposite way around because of the because of the exact reason you just said.
- 46:09SPEAKER_03: So Brinkman would be stopped Brinkman would be sold.
- 46:12SPEAKER_03: Velen would get the start because if he's in that World Cup 2023 Velen, he just wins everything, doesn't he?
- 46:20SPEAKER_03: Like he the untouchable.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you know I can I can't start him.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm allowed to though.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I I kind of I kind of agree.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: I do I do think uh the whole point of of uh we may we might need to call it start bench exile instead of sell, like yeah, exactly.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: We need we need to like uh so it will be start bench exile, like you don't get any more.
- 46:47SPEAKER_03: You want to make it more offensive.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you need to send you to send it one for for eight weeks to Ruchela without pay.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: Um we send him Siberia, remember you.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: Oh Siberia is also fine.
- 46:59SPEAKER_01: It's also fine.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'll do it differently.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: I would I I think I would uh I would start um start uh uh uh completely unbiased.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: I would start Cherry bench for the home and stellar.
- 47:17SPEAKER_03: He claims he claims uh to not suck up or be he claims to be neutral on this pod.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's just a lie.
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: No, okay, Cherry, you're going to Siberia.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: Um, okay.
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: Uh okay, um, this is a good one.
- 47:34SPEAKER_01: Hardig, Wallace, Miraez.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: That's like a really nice game you're playing.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: No, but it's good.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: I think I would I would uh I would with the rules with the rules that you've got in play.
- 47:50SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm sending Hardik to Tiberia because what he did to us in that quarterfinal at the Olympics.
- 47:56SPEAKER_01: Um he fucked you over.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: Okay, you you don't need to say it for the fourth episode in a row.
- 48:04SPEAKER_01: Um Vaseline, no Vaseline straight in uh Morales is on the bench.
- 48:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, I would I would need his form on the corner.
- 48:18SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 48:20SPEAKER_03: But if that's top, if that's form now, everything in it.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: I think he's he's on 15 goals or something now, or even more.
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a lot.
- 48:27SPEAKER_03: Zach many good power push from the top, though.
- 48:30SPEAKER_03: Have you seen that?
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: I think Miraias has too many goals for how good this corner is.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, but is your corner not as good as the amount you score?
- 48:45SPEAKER_00: I stand by what I said.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: I think he has too many goals for how good his corners.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but Lick Janssen is is like underperforming heavily then, eh?
- 48:56SPEAKER_00: Everyone says he's he's he has not a lot of goals in that in your logic.
- 49:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like like he is a really good flicker, but he doesn't score a lot of goals.
- 49:04SPEAKER_03: Does that mean he's not a good flicker?
- 49:05SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: So I would I think I would start uh uh Wallace, I would bench Hadik and I would send Miraias to Siberia.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: You guys come on okay now that we're talking about him Hendrik's Janse Bayonne.
- 49:21SPEAKER_01: Wait, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, after the announcer.
- 49:25SPEAKER_00: Um Hardik Wallace Mirales.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: I never actually played um with Hardik.
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: I do I did play with the other two, so those ones I know uh a lot better.
- 49:43SPEAKER_00: Um Wallace actually I I I I rate them all.
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: Let me have a ticket.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: I would you you're gonna have to crack down on this in a second.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: I would start I would start Mirales because I think he's why because I think he's uh he's a player that that um that brings a lot of uh calmness in uh in the in a team and links and links a lot of uh players.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: So I think he will make other people better.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: Um I would um I would not easy I would sell Hardik and I would bench uh Wallace Wallace because in the end he will he will come off the bench anyway, but he's he's the type of character that never shows he's always happy, he's always positive.
- 50:47SPEAKER_00: So I think he will he will quickly find his way towards the the pitch.
- 50:52SPEAKER_00: He will be out of that bench quickly.
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: You're already thinking like a coach, I like it.
- 50:56SPEAKER_01: Um but okay.
- 50:58SPEAKER_01: I've got one you can I do.
- 50:59SPEAKER_01: I think I do have one, I do have one thing on Miraez.
- 51:01SPEAKER_01: I think that I that I just thought of.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: I think it's really funny.
- 51:04SPEAKER_01: Blumenau um bought Miraias as a striker, then put him uh the second half of the season into central midfield, and now he's playing as a free man as a Blumenau.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: Like he's working his way back, he can do everything.
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he was working his way back into the field.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: Like with like when I was young, I played midfield, but I wasn't good enough, so they put me in the back.
- 51:24SPEAKER_01: Like with him, I feel like he's doing better and better the lower he gets on the field.
- 51:31SPEAKER_00: He's quite uh he's quite a good player.
- 51:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, my my one I've got a goalkeeper version.
- 51:36SPEAKER_03: I've got uh Dana Berg, Perman Black, and your brother, Loeck Van Doren.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that that's um I it's also very subjective, of course.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: Uh but I I know my brother, I know my brother uh better than anybody uh anybody else.
- 51:57SPEAKER_00: And my my my brother uh yeah hasn't had the the podium to uh yeah to show also uh what he's uh what he's able to do.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: Um so uh yeah obviously being uh being a second goalkeeper is uh is is a is a tough position, especially after uh or behind uh Van Ash, who's who's been uh who's been on top of his game and and probably on top of uh international hockey goalkeeper-wise for uh yeah for a very very long time.
- 52:28SPEAKER_01: So um but yeah, that being said, that being said, I'd sell the fucker.
- 52:35SPEAKER_00: Uh he's exiled.
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: No, that being said, uh he's um he he's he's uh he's the type of guy.
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: He was 17 when he when he got as second goalkeeper pushed towards the first goalkeeper position in the second half of the season.
- 52:55SPEAKER_00: Uh at that point we were I think sixth or something in the league, and and uh we ended up winning the league uh where he was uh yeah 70-year-old diving everything out.
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: So he it's it's uh he's a very very special uh talent.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: And for for the the reason that I think he deserves uh the opportunity to show his qualities, he's obviously in the 11.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: Um he might he might even be able to do it as a center striker, but for now we're doing the goalkeeper edition.
- 53:25SPEAKER_00: So let's keep him at the at the goalkeeper position.
- 53:29SPEAKER_00: Um I would bench block because he's got a big mouth on him.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: He will be he will be running jokes and and uh talking talking shit.
- 53:39SPEAKER_00: Uh only that would be will be probably quite funny.
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: And then uh unfortunately for Dennenberg, um he's for the same reason, for the same reason as well, and he's off.
- 53:50SPEAKER_01: I would just switch to Luik with uh with uh Piermen, I think.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: That's that's my only uh my my own.
- 53:57SPEAKER_00: I I I see I see I see where you come from.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, from Holland.
- 54:02SPEAKER_01: That's why I switch switching both.
- 54:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'll do Phil.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: Do you want to add something?
- 54:08SPEAKER_01: No, no, I'm good.
- 54:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 54:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, two more.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: Okay, um you one more, one more, and then get on to your questions.
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: Oh I have so many.
- 54:22SPEAKER_01: Oh um you want like an all-time one or you want like a current one?
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: Who are you asking?
- 54:33SPEAKER_01: If one of you if someone answers follow your feelings, you'll that's a great advice.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: Robert van der Horst Robert van der Horst, Mark Knowles, Artie van Doren.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: Are you joking?
- 54:51SPEAKER_00: I've got that one down there that's very easy.
- 54:54SPEAKER_00: That's easy.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: Mark Knowles is starting.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: Oh, your your your audio skipped.
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: Van der Hortizo.
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: Oh I think I think yeah, I think I'd have to I think I'd have to agree with you.
- 55:15SPEAKER_01: I think van der Host might be exiled.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: I think van Dore and Nors will be fight for the spot, but the Aussie power would win.
- 55:22SPEAKER_00: I think the it's obviously I it I haven't uh I was in in uh not the end of his career, but just to show that I was uh I haven't I haven't been uh been there for a longer period during his career, but I think the the the all the the aura around uh uh Mark also just the the the type of leader that he he was, I think that uh that was um especially probably for the guys in that program uh because we only look from the outside in, uh, but I think that that will put him uh that will put him first above a lot of people, including us three.
- 56:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: Mac one play.
- 56:07SPEAKER_03: I would probably I would probably mean it would talk about it.
- 56:10SPEAKER_01: I would spot for Nola with Norse, I think.
- 56:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm I'm I'm I don't want to, you know, we've given you a lot of love, but like you're playing chess about 10 moves ahead.
- 56:19SPEAKER_03: Like he was a good leader and everything.
- 56:21SPEAKER_03: But I think if I'm choosing who I want to play with, I think I'm like pretty keen to um get past the ball when I can't even see a gap from 60 yards away from me.
- 56:30SPEAKER_03: So I quite like that.
- 56:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, from my norse he can get on the bench.
- 56:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I think so too.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: Like if I was on the like if I'm thinking I'm on the team, I would like it would be really nice to play alongside you because then I would be the one they would like press, you know what I mean?
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: And with Norse, I think like he's a like a way better hooky player than I am, but like I think on the ball you would like still they would think ah, we can press them both.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: I think with I'd play with you, like I I could really like I had it in my first year with Fundal Hooks, they would just let me run.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: I think that would be the same when I now play with you, so it would be good.
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: Okay, I have some different questions now.
- 57:04SPEAKER_01: Okay, um, a player you want to play with, you haven't played with yet.
- 57:08SPEAKER_01: Is there someone on your list you think I really want to play with that guy on the same team?
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: Uh there is not not really a a name that that comes in uh into my mind, to be fair.
- 57:26SPEAKER_00: Uh I would have loved to have played with uh with Dwyer.
- 57:30SPEAKER_00: Uh why because uh you want to see you want me to say you.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, it would be so fun to play together in the background.
- 57:43SPEAKER_03: You could you could take the man, I would be the free man, and we would like have a really good song.
- 57:47SPEAKER_03: Oh I didn't even I didn't even catch on to that.
- 57:49SPEAKER_03: You've just fishing for uh fishing for some.
- 58:09SPEAKER_00: I I would have loved to have played with uh with a guy like uh Jamie or or Fuster.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: Why just because yeah, they come from different generations.
- 58:20SPEAKER_00: As I said, you look from the outside in and would have would have loved to just steal a little bit from the way they they behave in and around difficult moments, uh crisis stuff, uh just how they how they went about their business.
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: I would have just loved to to have a little bit a little bit of a look and see what uh what they did, the way they they yeah, as I said, behaved and went about their business.
- 58:48SPEAKER_00: I would have loved to sort of steal a little bit from that.
- 58:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a really good answer.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: I I was thinking more along along the lines of like a Harman Brit.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: How would it be to play with like the laziest but best center back there is maybe like like shit like that or like a hard eagle?
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: Like I want I want to be a part of that Indian team once, like the controlled chaos.
- 59:14SPEAKER_00: It's it's interesting, it's interesting.
- 59:16SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't know if we could see if we could see or or understand even the slightest of their structure.
- 59:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, it just doesn't exist, it's just it's not there.
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but still for them, it looks like like they they really understand yeah the way the way everything works.
- 59:35SPEAKER_00: It doesn't look it doesn't look that chaotic anymore.
- 59:38SPEAKER_00: It looks quite structured to be fair.
- 59:41SPEAKER_00: But still the way they yeah, it's also because you they scream and you you you could you cannot understand one layer of what they are screaming.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: It's like this high-pitched like the life debates.
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: It's so intense, it's so intense.
- 59:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're like what the if you if I've been at center forward and it's the fullback shouting to the other fullback, and you're like, what the fuck's just happened?
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: And all they want to do is get past the ball.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's so good.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_01: Uh okay, I think I have to I'll I'll speed it up a bit.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_01: Um okay, would you rather be the best player on South Africa or the reserve with the golden Belgium team in Tokyo only having played a pool game?
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_00: I think I would rather be uh in and around uh the environment that goes all the way and and and then sort of hope to be uh to be part of the the sort of follow-up generation.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_00: I think uh being being good yourself is is funny for quite a little while, but in the end, yeah.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_00: If that doesn't take you far, it it yeah, that sort of dies away quite quickly, I think.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_00: Phil?
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_00: That's my take.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I normally would go against that, but I actually wouldn't, I don't think.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_03: I think I'd find myself being like I think I'd be the reserve.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_03: Like like for South Africa.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I wouldn't.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_01: I would be in a reserve way too many fucking times.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_01: I'd put me on South Africa, I'll score some goals.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: Maybe I'd even get a chance to drag flick.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_01: I think I'd be there.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_01: Okay, uh which one's for you?
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_01: Blumendau or Dragon?
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_00: Uh that's that's an impossible one.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: I take my Joker.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah?
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_00: Play the joke.
- 1:01:34unknown: Yeah.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because they both have a very special place uh in in both my my life and uh and my hockey career.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, yeah, I've played I played eight years in the first team of Dragons, six years in the first team of Blumendau, uh, but obviously yeah, did all my youth career in uh in Dragons as well.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_00: Um it's it's it's different periods in my life, but but uh as beautiful as uh as as that first period was, as beautiful uh that that second period in uh in Holland was as well.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_03: I guess very quickly on that, like you you like you said, you played six seasons for Lumda.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_03: I looked this up, you won the national title three times, you won the EHL three times, you won the best player in the Hoof class at once.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_03: Um was it just time?
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_03: Like how and and how are you enjoying Bracks?
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_03: You're now moved to Brasgata.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_03: Um, new challenge for you.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_03: Like, is how's that for you?
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's it's very nice.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_00: It's a it's a very ambitious club with people that that really want to move forward, and um yeah, and and and you you feel that in and around that club, and I think that's that's that's something that I wanted to be a part of uh in the um in this in this phase of my career.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_00: So I've I've been uh I've yeah, I've I've been in and around the the the dragons sort of program uh that was already successful also in the past.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_00: Uh Blumendahl that that really really wanted uh success again after a long break of uh of not having um having won anything.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_00: And now you've got a club that yeah that that is is trying to have a lot of firsts.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_00: So first time in the um in the final of the Belgium uh competition, first time in EHL.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, I think they've they've been in two playoff uh series in in their uh in their history.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_00: So it's quite a young club, and I think that yeah, that it shows that they want to that they want to move forward.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_00: They've been uh uh investing in infrastructure and and and the team has been growing uh year after year.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_00: And they and they um and I think that that yeah we showed that that we've been uh we've been competing with the best of them uh with the with the sec, I think a second spot now in uh after the first half.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_00: So uh I'm very curious to see the the the rest of the of this season.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_03: Awesome.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_03: Sorry, you pay I I crashed your coop for a second.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_01: No, it's okay, Philip.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_01: It's okay.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_01: Very, very, very, um, very good answer, uh Arthur.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: Very well-rounded.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_01: Um now I thought okay.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, this is a good one.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_01: Okay, there's a hundred thousand euros on the line.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_01: One chance at a 10-foot straight putt.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_00: 10 foot or a option A.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_03: Go give us a second option.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_00: It's in or three.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_00: It's in you, it's in.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_01: It's in.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_01: I've I want to finish it, but I also wanted to you you've you've had you've had the your best day when we played.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, you're not that good a bother.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_01: You're not that good.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_00: Uh you know how you know how I put online it's in you.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: No, it's okay.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, one chance at the 10 foot straight butt, or three tries to hit the crossbar from the 23.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_00: That's a that's a good question.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_00: What's the it has to be shooting?
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_00: It has to be shooting from the 25?
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: Sorry?
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_01: Shooting from the 25?
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_01: You can do whatever you want.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_01: It just has to go on the 23.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_00: And how uh what is that in meters 10 foot?
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_01: It's like three and a half meters.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_03: Oof.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_03: Also, can you tell me the read of the green?
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_03: What are we playing?
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_03: Are we playing on a good or no?
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_01: It's a straight pot, downgrained, uh flat, uh, no wind, uh 20 degrees uh Celsius, uh and you're playing really like just a nice green, like not like Stimp 11.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: Good question.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_01: Flag flag is out.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_01: Uh you're having a decent day.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_01: You have one chance.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_01: If you if you if you if you make it, you get a hundred thousand uh euros.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_01: If you don't No, we're changing the rules.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_01: No, if you as we go as we go.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_01: If you don't, you don't.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_03: You know, I think I think this is gonna sound like I don't have any trust in my own hockey, but I'm taking that put.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_00: I think I'm also taking that putt, man.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_00: A straight put.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_01: Don't act like every straight put is in for you.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't act like it, but you you put me in front of a question and I answer.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay, fair.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_01: I think I would take the I've spent like 700 euros on the putter.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_01: I should take the pot, but I think I'm going for the for the crossbar.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_00: We should try it, eh?
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for 10 euros.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_00: We can do it for 10 euros.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_01: On 100,000 euros, like your knees will shake and you're like, fuck me.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_03: I was just about to say, how how quickly could we make could we turn this around?
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_03: How could we in the next couple of weeks?
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_03: Do you reckon you could do a one off 10 foot putt and have three balls at a crossbow?
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_03: Because I'm I'm willing to video them and make a fool out of myself.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_03: We know you've got the time.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_01: I'm going golfing tomorrow, coincidentally, so I can I can show you guys tomorrow.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_01: But I won't play hockey for another month, so that I could give you the button.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, to be fair, yeah, 25 is it's also very doable.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_03: All right, well, let's let's let's actually use that.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_03: Let's do that.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_03: Like if we're all willing to make a pack that at some point when you're next on a pitch, you take three get a video doing three goes, and you next time you play golf, go and have a 10-foot put, and we'll try and make some kind of uh video of it.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_03: We've got an editor.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_01: I'll send you the put tomorrow.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_01: Okay, then in the same spirit, would you rather play 18 holes or a practice match of hockey?
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_01: What do you mean?
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_01: What would you rather want to do?
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_01: 18 holes or a practice match of hockey?
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_03: Well, you know the answer.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_03: Why are we asking that question?
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not a difficult one.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_01: Look, everyone Phil, Phil, you're the biggest.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_01: Phil, you're the biggest hockey nerd I've ever met.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_01: You would take the practice match 100%.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_03: Don't don't ask a shit question, then try and turn it on me, mate, and call me a big loser.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_03: I no one likes practice matches.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_03: I love hockey, I love playing, but I don't love it that much.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_01: It's an international practice match.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_03: That's even worse.
- 1:08:37unknown: Okay.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_03: Right, okay.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_03: We're gonna come back for what what if if it's okay, we'll do one last break.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_03: We'll be back in a sec.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_03: Right, we're back again.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_03: We keep trying to make these episodes shorter.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_03: We're failing spectacularly, that's normal.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_03: You are we still in the coop or we are we out?
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_01: I still have I might have one.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_03: You do one more.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it's late, but Arthur's already committed, so we're he's in.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_03: He can't leave now.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_01: No, fair.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_01: Like, what what I need some help in the coop.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_01: What do you do you want a serious one?
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_01: Do you want a shitty one?
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_01: Like, I have a whole whole file of shitty and good questions.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_03: I think the fans have probably asked for a serious one.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_01: Fuck the fan.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_01: No, okay.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_01: Um a skill you take from a different player to add to your game.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_01: If you could like copy one skill, I'm pretty curious.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but Van Dessel is okay is is also spectacularly fast.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_00: Especially the first meters.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_00: I think that's that's probably the most valuable speed.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_01: But what would that add to your game?
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_00: I just I would just like it.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_00: Run funny.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_00: I would just I would just find it funny.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_00: Depends on what what you find quick.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_00: I'm not I'm not fine.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_00: I'm not fine, I'm not very quick.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_03: I also like how patriotic patriotic you are in throughout this uh podcast.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_03: It's come it's come across you're very proudly Belgian.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_03: It's like if in doubt, it's a Belgian thing.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_00: It's just it's just uh I know them uh the best, I think.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_01: It's a Belgian thing.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_01: They're they're they're very proud people, they're proud of their beer, their French fries, and their national hockey team.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_00: It's not French fries.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's not Belgian fries, yeah.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_01: I guess sorry.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_00: And Belgium is by far the best beer in the world.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_00: That's that's something we can all agree on.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_01: I actually bought uh um because we have uh uh in Dutch it's called Sinterklaas, and we uh usually celebrate it with all our friends, uh like with Arthur and uh that's the second one you try now and Florence Waterbourg and with Glen Schumann and Robot, and we have like this get together.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_01: Uh um Arthur can't make it, so that's why which which I because I haven't seen Arthur next to the occupitch no more, so I miss him.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm trying to say.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_01: But I actually bought the uh Stella Artois glass of uh like uh glasses for Wattle.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_00: Ah, that's a very he's gonna be very happy.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_01: We do like a secret center, and in Belgium in in Antwerp, they have like the the the glasses with like the gold ring over it, and Wattle's always a huge fan of those.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_01: Completely not relevant to this podcast, but just wanted to chug it out.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_03: It's just just to point out that you're thoughtful friend.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_01: Exactly, but a skill, a skill you take from a different thing.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_03: Did you you just said that to dig, didn't you?
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_03: Just to dig at Arthur that he's not coming, just to clarify.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_01: 100%, 100%.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_01: I think I think though, like why why would you need the speed?
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_01: I mate, if you would get like Alexander Hendricks's corner Jesus, like what a what a you would you that's poo uh yeah he's actually got he's got you there, you you're speechless.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_03: He's basically like you've actually proved me fuck he said the right thing.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_03: Why didn't I say that?
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_03: Now I'm now I'm stuck with some speed.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't want uh I wouldn't want the the corner, the corner is a corner.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_01: Who needs 40 goals a season?
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_00: Fuck that exactly.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_00: You want it you would want a corner?
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_00: You have the body for it.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_01: Okay well done to you.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_01: Congrats on this one.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_01: Congrats.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_01: Uh no, wouldn't take I would take uh Phil's right foot dribble.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_01: Oh stop it.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_00: No, I don't like the Phil Indian dribble.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_01: The Phil Indian dribble.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna keep that.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's actually pretty, yeah.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well done.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_01: Hey, that's off.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_03: Um what would you take, Phil?
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_03: I need quite a lot to my game, it's quite quite one-dimensional, but I'll I'm thinking like I'm trying to go outside the box and keep it Belgian, keep it happy.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_03: I'll go with uh Lloyd Loypart's aerial.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_03: I've always thought he could land it on an absolute sixpence, and I was like, that'd be that'd be nice.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_01: But still, but again, you're a red decorate forwards.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, why would you need a 60-yard aerial?
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_03: The long-term plan is I want to run, you want to run less.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_03: You wanna you wanna conserve your my my bad back and my bad knees, so just just gradually make it back, and then people are like, Why the fuck are you coming back?
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_03: And it's like, well, look at my sick aerial, and they'd be like, that's your 48.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_00: That's your four to eight year plan.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_00: Everybody, everybody needs one.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, but it might have to be the one to two year plan for the way I'm going.
- 1:14:39SPEAKER_01: You would say something like I I did think it would have to do with passing, like learn how to pass, but I wouldn't expect you to say like how to uh give a 60-yard aerial.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm standing by my my my age-old argument.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_03: I know how to pass.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_01: I just didn't not a four-inch shot, you also don't have a four-inch shot, right?
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_01: You can only hit it with your back end or not?
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, again, not essential.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_00: But what would you choose?
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_01: You yeah, I think I think really choose.
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_00: You would you would want uh flick for the to pay the bills?
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a drag flick to pay the bills, yeah.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_01: Like I I have so many good uh celebrations lined up, but I only score once every 70 caps, so I don't really can never really show them.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_03: Go on, but I I'll call you on it.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_03: What's your next but what's your next celebration then when you score?
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_01: It'll probably uh happen in cap 206.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_01: Uh if I ever come to that, like um it'll probably end up being the airplane thing again where I just run away with my hands uh up white.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but this is this is what I'm saying.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_01: If you somehow manage to stay calm and not get excited and run 50 afterwards, I always like I always think but like some guys really have this celebration, but how do you have time to think of that?
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_01: I always I also get I always get so like startled with myself of that I actually score that I forget I have to like do something, you know what I mean?
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_01: I say, holy fucking shit, I actually scored a goal, and then I kind of forget that I have to do something cool, whatever, and I just run away with my arms uh out wide.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_00: But that's the best thing, just the the the emotion, the emotion.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_00: Uh that's that's why everybody loves sports.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they want to see your your your airplane mode.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_00: You they want to see you fly to vertical handscot.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_03: They want to see you right foot, right foot drag Tibby.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_01: What's your next celebrator?
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_01: Are you going to do?
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_01: Because you scored a shootout film, you actually did like a little hard to indie.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you actually do it.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_01: You you score a little more often.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_01: How many goals did you have internationally?
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_01: Quite a lot, right?
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_01: 60.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_03: I think.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I mean I've never thought it three.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_03: I had the stupid little punch thing that was that was that I couldn't help, but it just got into a bad habit, and then it just became a thing.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_03: And then people started taking a piss, being like, you're going to do a little punch thing, and then I was like, fuck, I've got to get rid of that.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_03: And then yeah, the heart thing, well, that's yeah, maybe that's my thing now, but I need to play and score again.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_03: That maybe that's that's that's my next focus, not what my celebration should be.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_01: Quite essential to do a celebration.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_00: I love someone who has his priorities right.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you've you've just got you just said in your own terms, I've got a bunch of celebrations lined up.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_03: I'm asking.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_00: You went you went for the airplane that everybody saw 10 times already.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_01: Mate, I've scored once.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't don't give a damn.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_00: I I already know three, I already see three in my head, and they all involve a long run.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_03: All of them.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_00: They always start with you're under pressure, you have no idea where to go, and then you just start running really, really hard.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_00: Plus one, two, and then oof.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_00: I got some space here.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_00: I might I might go all the way.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_03: Shit, that's what I forgot to tell about you.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_03: I had this ongoing theory about you, Arthur, that um it was like when when your team starts to do badly, or you start to like lose, or you need to come back, you start getting closer and closer to the like the the the gain line or the pressing line, and you start spinning.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_03: And it's basically like you either V drag and spin, or then you go on a little meander.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_03: And whenever I see the first spin, I'm like, oh, he he he's turning up now.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_03: It's normally fourth quarter.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_03: He's like he's spinning now.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_03: Does that ring a bell or is that something I've just randomly picked up on?
- 1:18:41SPEAKER_00: No, no, I uh I I could see where uh where that comes from.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_00: It's just at at some point when um when things have to go, yeah, some guys will have to have to sort of get a little bit more um more more involved on the ball, yeah.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_00: And then obviously being uh a center defender you you touch a lot a lot of balls.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_00: So that's that makes that makes uh that makes it move.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_03: You almost did the whole episode.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_03: You got so close.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_03: We've this ended.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna try and wrap this up.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_03: It's been a long episode, but I mean, obviously, first and foremost, thank you so much for coming on, like delivering your insight.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_03: Um you know, your outlook on hockey is is is fascinating, and and I think we're really, really grateful.
- 1:19:36SPEAKER_03: And hopefully the fans and the listeners took something from it.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_03: Um good luck with uh you know the pro league, the second half of the season with Bracks.
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_03: Um, I'll be rooting for you, apart from you know, of for obvious reasons when we play you.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_03: Um look forward to the the purest view of hockey.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_03: That if if knowing that if someone does something good, you'll you'll always be appreciating the good style of hockey.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_03: Um, you penny closing.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_01: No, I'll see you Friday.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_00: I'm not I'm not going Friday.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_01: Oh no, I wasn't no.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_01: I'm very happy you uh you decided because I kind of asked him last minute as well.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_01: I asked on Monday, and he was very uh happy to change the schedule a bit um to get on board.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_01: So I'm um very appreciative of that, and uh, I hope I hope we see each other soon again.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_01: I miss I miss you.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_00: We will.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_03: Right, thank you, Arthur.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_00: Pleasure.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_00: Have a nice evening, guys.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_01: Cheer you, I'm gonna go to the back.
