- 0:00Hey, guys, it's friendly. Welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:04Thanks for joining me on another episode.
- 0:06We're going to continue walking through Second Thessalonians.
- 0:09We're nearing the end. Today's passage is once again
- 0:13short, but it is packed. And I believe it's moments like
- 0:18these where Paul is giving such a clear charge and a call to
- 0:23action. And sometimes the verses that
- 0:26might feel the simplest, that are the easiest to skim over are
- 0:30actually the ones that can ask the most of us.
- 0:33So today we're going to lean in together, reading through verses
- 0:3715 through 17 of chapter 2. So then, beloved brothers and
- 0:43sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that we
- 0:48taught you, whether by word of mouth or by our letter.
- 0:53Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father who
- 0:58has loved us and through His grace has given us eternal
- 1:02comfort and a wonderful hope, comfort you and strengthen you
- 1:07in every good work and word. OK, so I want to start right at
- 1:14the beginning. Paul says so then, and anytime
- 1:19we see that, we have to ask, OK, what was there before that?
- 1:23Because it's pointing us back to what was prior, back to what we
- 1:27just talked about in yesterday's episode.
- 1:30We talked about how we have been chosen by God, loved dearly, and
- 1:35that's our identity. And because that is true, Paul
- 1:39is now giving us a charge. Stand firm, hold fast.
- 1:46It's simple, but it's not easy. And it implies something really
- 1:51important that we could waver, we could drift if we're not
- 1:57truly anchored. Paul knew what these believers
- 2:02at this church were about to face, the false teachers, the
- 2:07persecution, the suffering and the trials.
- 2:10And honestly, even things that we still face today, like apathy
- 2:15or complacency, maybe distractions.
- 2:18It could look like slipping back into old habits, letting
- 2:22relationships or certain environments slowly pull us away
- 2:26from truth or comfort, shaping us more than conviction.
- 2:33So Paul's message is urgent and it's serious.
- 2:37He's saying, remember what I taught you and don't let it go
- 2:42to waste. Don't let it be in vain.
- 2:44This echoes First Corinthians 15, verse 58.
- 2:49He says be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of
- 2:54the Lord. So this is not a faith that is
- 2:58seasonal. It's not one that's easily
- 3:00shaken. It is rooted and then he shifts
- 3:04into this beautiful reminder of what we have been given in
- 3:08Christ. He says that God has given us
- 3:12eternal comfort and a wonderful hope.
- 3:16Now let's break it down. Eternal.
- 3:19That means never ending eternity.
- 3:23It's not temporary encouragement or excitement.
- 3:26It's not something that just shows up for a moment and then
- 3:30fades when life moves on and years pass.
- 3:33I think a lot of us might relate to this feeling when you walk
- 3:37through something hard and people show up.
- 3:40At first you're going to experience support and check
- 3:44insurance, some encouragement and prayer.
- 3:47But months later, it can get kind of quiet.
- 3:51Like everyone, everyone else has moved on, but you're still
- 3:55carrying that. And while people, yes, they can
- 3:59do the best they can, they're still human and their comfort is
- 4:03limited. But here we see that Jesus is
- 4:08not in Second Corinthians 1/3 through four, it calls God the
- 4:14God of all comfort, Not some, not occasional, but all comfort.
- 4:21So his comfort, it does not expire, it doesn't forget where
- 4:26you are in each season. It meets you not just one time,
- 4:31but continually. And that comfort, that
- 4:36encouragement is tied to something so powerful.
- 4:40Hope, a wonderful hope. Titus 2 verse 13 calls it our
- 4:46blessed hope, the return of Jesus.
- 4:49That's what we get to look forward to.
- 4:51And in Romans 824, it reminds us hope that is seen is no hope at
- 4:56all. But if we hope for what we do
- 4:59not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
- 5:04So I want to underline that this hope that is tied to that
- 5:07comfort, it's not passive. It's not just about someday.
- 5:12It anchors how we Live Today. It lifts our eyes up.
- 5:17It realigns our perspective and it reminds us that what we see
- 5:22right now is not the full story. Only God can see the full
- 5:27written script. We just see a tiny, tiny
- 5:30segment. And I love where Paul takes us
- 5:34next, that this comfort and hope.
- 5:37It strengthens us in every good work and word.
- 5:42So this is where it really comes to life and becomes active
- 5:46because God's comfort is not meant to just sit with you.
- 5:50It's meant to shape and mold you, to move throughout your
- 5:55inmost being. That's what fills your heart and
- 5:58it begins to filter into your life.
- 6:01This is seen through your thoughts and your words and then
- 6:04your actions. And I think it's so powerful
- 6:08that the Passion translation that I read every good, it says
- 6:12every good work and word that is beautiful in his eyes.
- 6:17So y'all, this is not what culture calls good.
- 6:21It's not what feels right just in the moment, but what God sees
- 6:26as beautiful, righteous, pure, set apart.
- 6:33And that requires a shift to stop filtering life through our
- 6:38own human feelings, but to start seeing it through His truth,
- 6:43through His lens. So if we bring this all
- 6:47together, I just want us to remember, don't let your present
- 6:52circumstance paralyze you. Don't let your temporary
- 6:56struggles right now distort your eternal truth and hope.
- 7:02Because the comfort and the hope that you've been given, it's
- 7:06meant to keep you rooted. It anchors you so that it can
- 7:11activate you not just to believe the word, but to actually live
- 7:15it out. And I want to close with these
- 7:19two verses from James. James 1 verses 22 through 23.
- 7:25It says don't just listen to the word of truth and not respond to
- 7:29it, for that is the essence of self deception.
- 7:33So always let His word become like poetry, written and
- 7:38fulfilled by your life. If you listen to the word and
- 7:43don't live out the message that you hear, you become like the
- 7:46person who looks in the mirror of the word to discover the
- 7:50reflection of his face in the beginning.
- 7:53So this is the call. We're not to just be hearers, to
- 7:58just read our Bible and to read it passively, but to be doers,
- 8:04to have an active faith, not just to be encouraged, but to
- 8:09live transformed. And this passage was so timely
- 8:13for me because I've mentioned my word for the year has been
- 8:16comforter and really just the Lord already teaching me how to
- 8:22actually receive comfort that He freely gives.
- 8:26And so these verses reminded me that his comfort, it strengthens
- 8:31me to stand firm, to hold fast, and to live differently as a
- 8:36believer. So I pray that it does the same
- 8:40for you guys. I'm going to go ahead and close
- 8:42out briefly in prayer. Dear Jesus, thank You that You
- 8:49are a constant comfort and that is tied to You being our living
- 8:54and blessed hope. Would You strengthen us to stand
- 9:00firm and to hold fast to Your truth no matter what we
- 9:05encounter today? God, we don't want to just be
- 9:09hearers, we want to be doers. So aid us in living it out and
- 9:14make our lives beautiful in Your eyes.
- 9:19Give us Your perspective on life, on each opportunity that
- 9:24we face each day, each person that we interact with.
- 9:29Lord, may we live lives that reflect you, Jesus, and how we
- 9:36speak and how we conduct our behavior and our faith, love and
- 9:41purity. We ask this in your name, Jesus.
- 9:46Amen. OK y'all, that's what I have for
- 9:49today's episode. Praying that it blesses you,
- 9:51that it'll leave you feeling encouraged and just give you a
- 9:55boost for today. And I hope that you all have a
- 9:58great rest of your Thursday. I'll see you in the next
- 10:00episode.
