- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Years ago, the author and teacher Parker Palmer wrote a profound little book called Let Your Life Speak.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: And in the book, he writes this Before I can tell my life what I want to do with it, I must listen to my life telling me who I am.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Let me ask you this question.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: What does it mean to listen to your life?
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Well, I think that it means paying attention to the signposts telling you where you should go.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: You know it's amazing how often we don't see the signs right in front of us.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: These signs can take different shapes, such as what your gut is telling you, what you're passionate about, and where you're experiencing success.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Those can all be indicators of what you should be doing with your life.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: I think one of the most important signs, though, comes from other people.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Are there people in your life who've encouraged you in your writing?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's teachers, parents, or friends.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: If so, this is a sure sign that you need to lean into writing.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Now, if you haven't had people encourage you as a writer, no worries.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: It may be that you simply haven't written and shared it enough with other people for them to affirm your gift.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Maybe you've had people be critical or dismissive about your writing.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: And if that's the case, remember that anybody who criticizes you without a loving spirit has the wrong attitude.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Most of the time, other people's criticism is driven by jealousy and a lack of affirmation in their own life.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Or as the saying goes, hurting people hurt people.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: I believe that paying attention to the signposts, especially from other people around you, is really a critical part of knowing where you should go in your life and what direction you should take.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: So listen to the people who encourage and affirm your writing.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: They're the ones pointing you in the right direction.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Think about a person who's encouraged you as a writer.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Take a moment today to write them a note or send them a text thanking them for how they've added value to your life.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Now, I know most of you won't do this, but a couple of you will.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: It only takes a second, and I promise you it'll make that person's day.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So don't hesitate.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Do it right now.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: It'll make a big difference.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: A big thanks to today's sponsor, Thumbprint Creative.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: You've probably heard the saying, don't judge a book by its cover.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: But in the book world, it's absolutely not true.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: People do judge the quality of the book by its cover, and in fact, the cover design is the first thing people notice about a book.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: That's why my graphic designer of choice is Christy Griffith, owner of Thumbprint Creative.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I've worked with Christy for many years, and she's designed covers and interior layouts for my own books, my ghostwriting clients, as well as lots of books for friends that I've sent her away.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Christy works closely with you to design a layout that perfectly captures the theme and genre of the book.
