- 0:16Speaker 2: You're having a look at some aged care reform. Apparently
- 0:18Speaker 2: we've got a Ministry real advisory group they've established to
- 0:21Speaker 2: review the outdated funding model their words, not mine, currently
- 0:24Speaker 2: cost US two and a half billion dollars a year.
- 0:26Speaker 2: What they're looking at is the sustainable supply of aged
- 0:29Speaker 2: care beds and cohesion between services. Now Tracy Martin for
- 0:32Speaker 2: when you see them first, MP, of course, our chief
- 0:35Speaker 2: executive of Aged Care Association these days and is with us.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Good morning, good morning. We haven't talked for a while
- 0:40Speaker 2: post to your political life. Do you enjoying this job?
- 0:42Speaker 2: Have you got a grip on it?
- 0:44Speaker 3: Yes? I am enjoying it. I think I'm gripping it up.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Okay, as the Prime Minister would say, at two and
- 0:50Speaker 2: a half billion dollars expenditure for the sector, is the
- 0:54Speaker 2: money efficient.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Two and a half billion dollars also includes home and
- 0:59Speaker 3: home care delivery, so it's not all for residential care.
- 1:04Speaker 3: But I don't think anybody believes and we've had report
- 1:08Speaker 3: after after report saying that the model of delivery and
- 1:12Speaker 3: the funding system itself is broken. So ultimately, at the moment,
- 1:17Speaker 3: we're putting that money in. But can we say that
- 1:20Speaker 3: we are getting the best, the most efficient system out
- 1:23Speaker 3: the other side that cares for people the way they
- 1:25Speaker 3: should be cared for. We've got passionate people delivering care. Absolutely,
- 1:29Speaker 3: but the model needs to be looked at.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Okay. So it's not just automatically about more money.
- 1:37Speaker 3: No, definitely not. This is about taking what is the
- 1:41Speaker 3: last century way of delivering care to a completely different
- 1:45Speaker 3: cohort of human beings. Ultimately, they're older, they come in
- 1:49Speaker 3: with much more complicated sort of co morbidities, their acuities higher.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Aging in place has been very successful, So the people
- 1:58Speaker 3: that are being looked after in residential care have much
- 2:01Speaker 3: higher needs and it needs to be delivered in a
- 2:04Speaker 3: different way.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Okay, apart from the different wayside of it, the aging population,
- 2:08Speaker 2: its role and how dramatic that will be. Are we
- 2:11Speaker 2: on top of that?
- 2:12Speaker 3: No? Absolutely not. I mean government's successive governments have known
- 2:16Speaker 3: its coming and they haven't taken the action that's needed
- 2:20Speaker 3: to be taken. So we kind of got a very
- 2:22Speaker 3: small window left now around about ten to fifteen years.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Okay. So it's one thing to say, let's have a
- 2:26Speaker 2: look at it. Is anything going to happen? When do
- 2:28Speaker 2: I ring you back? And when do you go? Well,
- 2:30Speaker 2: I'll tell you what we fixed that good and proper.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Yes, that's right, well, well done, good point. I think
- 2:37Speaker 3: what's what we're hoping for with the announcement that has
- 2:40Speaker 3: been made recently as this is the first true action.
- 2:44Speaker 3: This is not another review. This is actually bringing experts
- 2:47Speaker 3: who know how to deliver care both in home and
- 2:51Speaker 3: in residential care together in a room and giving them
- 2:54Speaker 3: a period of time, a short period of time, and saying, okay,
- 2:57Speaker 3: tell us what will work, and then we'll take it
- 3:00Speaker 3: into cabinet and then we'll have a conversation about it.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Good luck, well that Tracy Martin, Chef, Executive, Aged Care Association.
