Speaker 1: Chapter two, the Emperor of Liliput, attended by several of
0:05
Speaker 1: the nobility, comes to see the author in his confinement.
0:09
Speaker 1: The Emperor's person and habits described learned men appointed to
0:13
Speaker 1: teach the author their language. He gains favor by his
0:17
Speaker 1: mild disposition. His pockets are searched, and his sword and
0:20
Speaker 1: pistols taken from him. When I found myself on my feet,
0:24
Speaker 1: I looked about me, and must confess I never beheld
0:28
Speaker 1: a more entertaining prospect. The country around appeared like a
0:32
Speaker 1: continued garden, and the enclosed fields, which were generally forty
0:37
Speaker 1: feet square, resembled so many beds of flowers. These fields
0:41
Speaker 1: were intermingled with woods of half a stang, and the
0:44
Speaker 1: tallest trees, as I could judge, appeared to be seven
0:47
Speaker 1: feet high. I viewed the town on my left hand,
0:51
Speaker 1: which looked like the painted scene of a city in
0:53
Speaker 1: a theater. I had been for some hours extremely pressed
0:58
Speaker 1: by the necessities of nature, which was no wonder it,
1:01
Speaker 1: being almost two days since I had last disburdened myself.
1:05
Speaker 1: I was under great difficulties between urgency and shame. The
1:09
Speaker 1: best expedient I could think of was to creep into
1:12
Speaker 1: my house, which I accordingly did and shut in the
1:15
Speaker 1: gate after me. I went as far as the length
1:17
Speaker 1: of my chain would suffer, and discharge my body of
1:20
Speaker 1: that uneasy load. But this was the only time I
1:23
Speaker 1: was ever guilty of so uncleanly, an action for which
1:26
Speaker 1: I cannot but hope the candid reader will give some
1:29
Speaker 1: allowance after who is maturely and impartially considered my case
1:33
Speaker 1: and the distress I was in. From this time my
1:38
Speaker 1: constant practice was as soon as I rose to perform
1:41
Speaker 1: that business in open air at the full extent of
1:43
Speaker 1: my chain, and due care was taken every morning before
1:47
Speaker 1: company came, that the offensive matter should be carried off
1:50
Speaker 1: in wheelbarrows by two servants appointed for that purpose. I
1:55
Speaker 1: would not have dwelt so long upon a circumstance that,
1:58
Speaker 1: perhaps at first sight, may appear not very momentous if
2:03
Speaker 1: I had not thought it necessary to justify my character
2:05
Speaker 1: in point of cleanliness to the world, which I am
2:09
Speaker 1: told some of my maligners have been pleased upon this
2:13
Speaker 1: and other occasions to call into question. When this adventure
2:19
Speaker 1: was at an end, I came back out of my house,
2:22
Speaker 1: having an occasion for fresh air. The Emperor was already
2:26
Speaker 1: descended from the tower and advancing on horseback towards me,
2:30
Speaker 1: which had liked to have cost him dear. For the beast,
2:33
Speaker 1: though very well trained, yet wholly unused to such a sight,
2:36
Speaker 1: which appeared as if a mountain moved before him, reared
2:40
Speaker 1: up on his hind feet. But that Prince, who is
2:43
Speaker 1: an excellent horseman, kept his seat till his attendants ran
2:47
Speaker 1: in and held the bridle, while his majesty had time
2:50
Speaker 1: to dismount. When he alighted, he surveyed me round with
2:55
Speaker 1: great admiration, but kept beyond the length of my chain.
3:00
Speaker 1: He ordered his cooks and butlers, who were already prepared
3:03
Speaker 1: to give me victuals and drink, which they pushed forward
3:06
Speaker 1: in a sort of vehicle upon wheels till I could
3:09
Speaker 1: reach them. I took these vehicles and soon emptied them.
3:13
Speaker 1: All twenty of them were filled with meat, and ten
3:16
Speaker 1: with liqueur. Each of the former afforded me two or
3:20
Speaker 1: three good mouthfuls, And I emptied the liqueur of ten vessels,
3:24
Speaker 1: which was contained in irven vials, into one vehicle, drinking
3:29
Speaker 1: it off at a draft. And so I did with
3:31
Speaker 1: the rest. The Empress and young princes of the blood
3:36
Speaker 1: of both sexes. Attended by many ladies, sat at some
3:39
Speaker 1: distance in their chairs, but upon the accident that happened
3:44
Speaker 1: to the Emperor's horse, they alighted and came near his person,
3:47
Speaker 1: which I am now going to describe. He is taller,
3:51
Speaker 1: by almost the breadth of my nail than any of
3:53
Speaker 1: his court, which alone is enough to strike an oar
3:56
Speaker 1: into the beholders. His features are strong and masculin, with
4:01
Speaker 1: an Austrian lip and arched nose, his complexion olive, his
4:05
Speaker 1: countenance erect, his body and limbs well proportioned, all his
4:10
Speaker 1: motions graceful, and his deportment majestic. He was then past
4:15
Speaker 1: his prime, being twenty eight years and three quarters old,
4:19
Speaker 1: of which he had reigned about seven, in great felicity
4:22
Speaker 1: and generally victorious. For the better convenience of beholding him,
4:27
Speaker 1: I lay on my side so that my face was
4:29
Speaker 1: parallel to his, and he stood but three yards off. However,
4:34
Speaker 1: I have had him since many times in my hand,
4:37
Speaker 1: and therefore cannot be deceived in the description. His dress
4:42
Speaker 1: was very plain and simple, and the fashion of it
4:44
Speaker 1: between the Asia Static and the European. But he had
4:48
Speaker 1: on his head a light helmet of gold, adorned with
4:51
Speaker 1: jewels and a plume on the crest. He held a
4:55
Speaker 1: sword drawn in his hand to defend himself if I
4:57
Speaker 1: should happen to break loose. It was almost three inches long.
5:02
Speaker 1: The hills and scabbard were gold and rich with diamonds.
5:05
Speaker 1: His voice was shrill, but very clear and articulate, and
5:08
Speaker 1: I could distinctly hear it when I stood up. The
5:11
Speaker 1: ladies and courtiers were all magnificently clad, so that the
5:15
Speaker 1: spot they stood upon seemed to resemble a petticoat spread
5:18
Speaker 1: upon the ground, embroidered with figures of gold and silver.
5:23
Speaker 1: His Imperial Majesty spoke often to me, and I returned answers,
5:28
Speaker 1: but neither of us can understand its syllable. There were
5:32
Speaker 1: several of his priests and lawyers present, as I conjectured
5:35
Speaker 1: by their habits, who were commanded to address themselves to me,
5:40
Speaker 1: and I spoke to them in many languages, as I
5:42
Speaker 1: had the least smattering of which were high and low Dutch, Latin, French, Spanish, Italian,
5:49
Speaker 1: and Lingu Francars, but all to no purpose. After about
5:54
Speaker 1: two hours, the court retired, and I was left with
5:57
Speaker 1: a strong guard to prevent the impertinence, and probably the
6:00
Speaker 1: malice of the rabble, who were very impatient to crowd
6:03
Speaker 1: about me as near as they durst, and some of
6:06
Speaker 1: them had the impudence to shoot their arrows at me
6:09
Speaker 1: as I sat on the ground by the door of
6:11
Speaker 1: my house, where one very narrowly missed my left eye.
6:17
Speaker 1: But the colonel ordered six of the ring leaders to
6:19
Speaker 1: be seized, and thought no punishment so proper as to
6:22
Speaker 1: deliver them bound into my hands, which some of his
6:25
Speaker 1: soldiers accordingly did, pushing them forward with the buttons of
6:29
Speaker 1: their pikes into my reach. I took them in my
6:32
Speaker 1: right hand, put five of them into my coat pocket.
6:36
Speaker 1: I nursed to the sixth. I made a countenance as
6:38
Speaker 1: if I would eat him alive. The poor man scrawled terribly,
6:43
Speaker 1: and the colonel and his officers were in much pain,
6:46
Speaker 1: especially when they saw me take out my pen knife.
6:49
Speaker 1: But I soon put them out of fear for looking mildly,
6:53
Speaker 1: and immediately cutting the strings he was bound with. I
6:56
Speaker 1: set him gently on the ground, and away he ran.
7:00
Speaker 1: I treated the rest in the same manner, taken them
7:02
Speaker 1: one by one out of my pocket, and I observed
7:05
Speaker 1: both the soldiers and people were highly delighted at this
7:08
Speaker 1: mark of my clemency, which was represented very much to
7:11
Speaker 1: my advantage at court. Towards night, I got with some
7:15
Speaker 1: difficulty into my house, where I lay on the ground,
7:19
Speaker 1: and continued to do so about a fortnight, during which
7:23
Speaker 1: time the Emperor gave orders to have a bed prepared
7:25
Speaker 1: for me. Six hundred beds of the common measure were
7:29
Speaker 1: brought in carriages and worked up in my house. A
7:33
Speaker 1: hundred and fifty of their beds, sewn together, made up
7:36
Speaker 1: the breadth and length, and these were four double, which however,
7:40
Speaker 1: kept me but very indifferently from the hardness of the
7:43
Speaker 1: floor that was a smooth stone. By the same computation,
7:47
Speaker 1: they provided me with sheets, blankets, and coverlets, tolerable enough
7:52
Speaker 1: for one who had been so long inured to hardships.
7:56
Speaker 1: As the news of my arrival spread through the kingdom,
8:00
Speaker 1: it brought prodigious numbers of rich, idle and curious people
8:03
Speaker 1: to see me, so that the villages were almost emptied,
8:07
Speaker 1: and a great neglect of tillage and household affairs must
8:10
Speaker 1: have ensued if his Imperial Majesty had not provided by
8:14
Speaker 1: several proclamations and orders of state against this inconveniency, he
8:19
Speaker 1: directed that those who had already beheld me should return
8:21
Speaker 1: home and not presumed to come within fifty yards of
8:24
Speaker 1: my house without license from the Court, whereby the secretaries
8:28
Speaker 1: of State got considerable fees. In the meantime, the Emperor
8:33
Speaker 1: held frequent councils to debate what course should be taken
8:37
Speaker 1: with me, and I was afterwards assured by a particular friend,
8:41
Speaker 1: a person of great quality, who was as much in
8:44
Speaker 1: the secret as any, that the Court was under many
8:46
Speaker 1: difficulties concerning me. They apprehended my breaking loose, that my
8:52
Speaker 1: diet would be very expensive and might cause a famine.
8:56
Speaker 1: Sometimes they determined to starve me, or at least to
8:59
Speaker 1: shoot me in the face and head hands with poisoned arrows,
9:01
Speaker 1: which would soon dispatch me. But again they considered that
9:05
Speaker 1: the stent of so large a carcass might produce a
9:07
Speaker 1: plague in the metropolis and probably spread through the whole kingdom.
9:12
Speaker 1: In the midst of these consultations, several officers of the
9:15
Speaker 1: army went to the door of the Great Council Chamber,
9:18
Speaker 1: and two of them, being admitted, gave an account of
9:21
Speaker 1: my behavior to the six criminals above mentioned, which made
9:25
Speaker 1: so favorable an impression in the breast of His Majesty
9:28
Speaker 1: and the whole board in my behalf, that an imperial
9:31
Speaker 1: commission was issued out, obliging all the villages nine hundred
9:35
Speaker 1: yards around the city to deliver in every morning six beaves,
9:39
Speaker 1: forty sheep, and other victuals for my sustenance, together with
9:44
Speaker 1: a proportional quantity of bread and wine, and other liqueurs,
9:48
Speaker 1: for the due payment of which His Majesty gave assignments
9:51
Speaker 1: upon his treasury. For this Prince lives chiefly upon his
9:55
Speaker 1: own demensies, seldom, except upon great occasions, raised any subsidies
10:01
Speaker 1: upon his subjects, who were bound to attend him in
10:03
Speaker 1: his wars at their own expense. An establishment was also
10:08
Speaker 1: made of six hundred persons to be my domestics, who
10:11
Speaker 1: had broad wages allowed for their maintenance, and tents built
10:14
Speaker 1: for them very conveniently on each side of my door.
10:18
Speaker 1: It was likewise ordered that three hundred tailors should make
10:21
Speaker 1: me a suit of clothes after the fashion of the country,
10:25
Speaker 1: that six of His Majesty's greatest scholars should be employed
10:27
Speaker 1: to instruct me in their language. And lastly, that the
10:30
Speaker 1: Emperor's horses and those of the nobility and troops of
10:33
Speaker 1: the guards should be frequently exercised, in my sight to
10:36
Speaker 1: accustom themselves to me. All these orders were duly put
10:41
Speaker 1: in execution, and in about three weeks I made a
10:44
Speaker 1: great progress in learning their language, during which time the
10:48
Speaker 1: Emperor frequently honored me with his visits and was pleased
10:52
Speaker 1: to assist my masters in teaching me. We began already
10:57
Speaker 1: to converse together in some sort, and the first words
11:00
Speaker 1: I learnt were to express my desire that he would
11:03
Speaker 1: please give me my liberty, which I every day repeated
11:06
Speaker 1: on my knees. His answer, as I could comprehend, it,
11:11
Speaker 1: was that this must be the work of time, not
11:14
Speaker 1: to be thought on without the advice of his counsel.
11:16
Speaker 1: And at first I must lumas kelmyn pessot desmarleon eposso
11:23
Speaker 1: that is, swear a piece with him and his kingdom. However,
11:28
Speaker 1: that I should be used with all kindness, and he
11:31
Speaker 1: advised me to acquire, by my patience and discreet behavior
11:36
Speaker 1: the good opinion of himself and his subjects he desired.
11:39
Speaker 1: I would not take it ill if he gave orders
11:42
Speaker 1: to certain proper officers to search me, for probably I
11:46
Speaker 1: might carry about me several weapons, which must needs be
11:49
Speaker 1: dangerous things. If they answered the bulk of so prodigious
11:53
Speaker 1: a person, I said, his majesty should be satisfied, for
11:59
Speaker 1: I was ready to strip myself, and turned my pockets
12:01
Speaker 1: before him. This I delivered, part in words and part
12:06
Speaker 1: in signs. He replied that by the laws of the kingdom,
12:11
Speaker 1: I must be searched by two of his officers. That
12:13
Speaker 1: he knew this could not be done without my consent
12:15
Speaker 1: and assistance, and he had so good an opinion of
12:18
Speaker 1: my generosity and justice as to trust their persons in
12:22
Speaker 1: my hands, that whatever they took from me should be
12:25
Speaker 1: returned when I left the country, or paid were at
12:28
Speaker 1: the rate which I would set upon them. I took
12:32
Speaker 1: up the two officers in my hands, put them first
12:35
Speaker 1: in my coat pockets, and then into every other pocket
12:37
Speaker 1: about me, except my two fobs and another secret pocket,
12:42
Speaker 1: which I had no mind should be searched, wherein I
12:45
Speaker 1: had some little necessities that it were of no consequence
12:48
Speaker 1: to any but myself. In one of my fobs there
12:52
Speaker 1: was a silver watch, and in the other a small
12:54
Speaker 1: quantity of gold in a purse. These gentlemen, having pen
12:58
Speaker 1: ink and paper about them made an exact inventory of
13:02
Speaker 1: everything they saw, and when they had done desired, I
13:05
Speaker 1: would set them down that they might deliver it to
13:08
Speaker 1: the Emperor. This inventory I afterwards translated into English, and
13:14
Speaker 1: is word a word as follows impromise in the right
13:21
Speaker 1: coat pocket of the great man Mountain, for so I
13:24
Speaker 1: interpret the words quimbus flesterin After the strictest search, we
13:30
Speaker 1: found only one great piece of coarse cloth, large enough
13:33
Speaker 1: to be a foot cloth for your Majesty's chief room
13:35
Speaker 1: of state. In the left pocket we saw a huge
13:38
Speaker 1: silver chest with the cover of the same metal, which we,
13:42
Speaker 1: the search us, were not able to lift. We desired
13:47
Speaker 1: it should be opened, and one of us, stepping into it,
13:50
Speaker 1: found himself up to the mid leg in a sort
13:53
Speaker 1: of dust, some part whereof flying up to our faces
13:56
Speaker 1: set us both as sneezing for several times together. In
14:00
Speaker 1: his right waistcoat pocket we found a prodigious bundle of white,
14:03
Speaker 1: thin substances, folded one over another, about the bigness of
14:09
Speaker 1: three men, tied with a strong cable, and marked with
14:13
Speaker 1: black figures, which we humbly conceived to be writings. Every
14:18
Speaker 1: letter almost half as large as the palm of our hands.
14:23
Speaker 1: In the left there was a sort of engine, from
14:25
Speaker 1: the back of which were extended twenty long poles, ressembling
14:29
Speaker 1: the palisadoes before your Majesty's court, wherewith we conjectured the
14:34
Speaker 1: man mounting combs his head, for we did not always
14:37
Speaker 1: trouble him with questions, because we found it a great
14:40
Speaker 1: difficulty to make him understand us. In the large pocket,
14:44
Speaker 1: on the right side of his middle cover, so I
14:47
Speaker 1: translated the word and ran fullo, by which they meant
14:50
Speaker 1: my breeches, we saw a hollow pillow of iron about
14:54
Speaker 1: the length of a man, fastened to a strong piece
14:57
Speaker 1: of timber larger than the pillar. And upon one side
15:00
Speaker 1: of the pillar were huge pieces of iron sticking out,
15:04
Speaker 1: cut into strange figures, which we know not what to
15:07
Speaker 1: make of. In the left pocket another engine of the
15:11
Speaker 1: same kind. In the smaller pocket on the right side
15:14
Speaker 1: were several round, flat pieces of white and red metal
15:17
Speaker 1: of different bulk. Some of the white, which seemed to
15:21
Speaker 1: be silver, were so large and heavy that my comrade
15:24
Speaker 1: and I could hardly lift them. In the left pocket
15:28
Speaker 1: were two black pillars, irregularly shaped. We could not with
15:32
Speaker 1: difficulty reach the top of them, as we stood at
15:34
Speaker 1: the bottom of his pocket. One of them was covered
15:38
Speaker 1: and seemed all of a piece, but at the upper
15:40
Speaker 1: end of the other there appeared a white, round substance
15:44
Speaker 1: about twice the bigness of our heads. Within each of
15:48
Speaker 1: these were enclosed a prodigious plate of steel, which, by
15:52
Speaker 1: our orders we obliged him to show us, because we
15:55
Speaker 1: apprehended they might be dangerous engines. He took them out
15:59
Speaker 1: of their cases and told us that in his own
16:02
Speaker 1: country his practice was to shave his beard with one
16:05
Speaker 1: of these and cut his meat with the other. There
16:09
Speaker 1: were two pockets which we could not enter. These he
16:12
Speaker 1: caught his fobs. They were two large slits cut into
16:15
Speaker 1: the top of his middle cover, but squeezed close by
16:18
Speaker 1: the pressure of his belly. Out of the right fob
16:22
Speaker 1: hung a great silver chain with a wonderful kind of
16:25
Speaker 1: engine at the bottom. We directed him to draw out
16:28
Speaker 1: whatever was at the end of that chain, which appeared
16:31
Speaker 1: to be a globe half silver and half of some
16:34
Speaker 1: transparent metal. Four On the transparent side, we saw certain
16:38
Speaker 1: strange figures circularly drawn, and thought we could touch them,
16:43
Speaker 1: till we found our figures stopped by the lucid substance.
16:47
Speaker 1: He put this engine into our ears, which made an
16:50
Speaker 1: incessant noise like that of a water mill. And we
16:53
Speaker 1: in conjecture it is either some unknown animal or the
16:57
Speaker 1: god that he worships. But we are more inclining to
17:00
Speaker 1: the latter opinion, because he assured us, if we understood
17:04
Speaker 1: him right, for expressed himself very imperfectly, that he seldom
17:08
Speaker 1: did anything without consulting it. He called it his oracle,
17:12
Speaker 1: and said it pointed out the time for every action
17:15
Speaker 1: of his life. From the left fob he took out
17:19
Speaker 1: a net almost large enough for a fisherman, but contrived
17:22
Speaker 1: to open and shut like a purse, and served him
17:25
Speaker 1: for the same use. We found therein several massy pieces
17:29
Speaker 1: of yellow metal, which, if they be real gold, must
17:32
Speaker 1: be of immense value. Having thus, in obedience to your
17:37
Speaker 1: Majesty's commands, diligently searched all his pockets, we observed a
17:42
Speaker 1: girdle about his waist made of the hide of some
17:44
Speaker 1: prodigious animal, from which on the left side hung a
17:48
Speaker 1: sword of the length of five men, and on the
17:50
Speaker 1: right a bag or pouch divided into two cells, each
17:56
Speaker 1: cell capable of holding three of your Majesty's subjects. In
18:00
Speaker 1: each of these cells were several globes or walls of
18:03
Speaker 1: a most ponderous metal, about the bigness of our heads,
18:07
Speaker 1: and requiring a strong hand to lift them. The other
18:10
Speaker 1: cell contained a heap of black grains, but of no
18:13
Speaker 1: great bulk or weight, for we could hold above fifty
18:17
Speaker 1: of them in the palm of our hands. This is
18:20
Speaker 1: an exact inventory of what we found about the body
18:23
Speaker 1: of the man Mountain who used us with great civility
18:27
Speaker 1: and due respect to your Majesty's commission, signed and sealed
18:31
Speaker 1: on the fourth day of the eighty ninth moon of
18:33
Speaker 1: your Majesty's auspicious rain, Clefren Freelock Marsy Freelock. When this
18:42
Speaker 1: inventory was read over to the Emperor, he directed me,
18:45
Speaker 1: although in very gentle terms, to deliver up several particulars.
18:50
Speaker 1: He first called for my cimetar, which I took out,
18:53
Speaker 1: scabbard and all. In the meantime, he ordered three thousand
18:57
Speaker 1: of his choicest troops, who then attended him to surround
19:01
Speaker 1: me at a distance with their bows and arrows just
19:04
Speaker 1: ready to discharge. But I did not observe it, for
19:08
Speaker 1: mine eyes were wholly fixed upon his majesty. He then
19:12
Speaker 1: desired me to draw my cimitar, which, although he had
19:15
Speaker 1: got some rust by the sea water, was in most
19:19
Speaker 1: parts exceedingly bright. I did so, and immediately all the
19:23
Speaker 1: troops gave a shout between terror and surprise, for the
19:27
Speaker 1: sun shone clear, and the reflection dazzled their eyes. As
19:30
Speaker 1: I waved the scimeter to and fro in my hand.
19:33
Speaker 1: His Majesty, who is a most magnanimous prince, was less
19:37
Speaker 1: daunted than I could expect. He ordered me to return
19:41
Speaker 1: it into the scabbard and cast it on the ground
19:44
Speaker 1: as gently as I could, about six feet from the
19:46
Speaker 1: end of my chain. The next thing he demanded was
19:50
Speaker 1: of the hollow iron pillars, by which he meant my
19:54
Speaker 1: pocket pistols. I drew it out, and at his desire,
19:58
Speaker 1: as well as I could breath, to him the use
20:00
Speaker 1: of it, and charging it only with powder, which, by
20:04
Speaker 1: the closeness of my pouch, happened to escape wetting in
20:07
Speaker 1: the sea, an inconvenience against which all prudent mariners take
20:11
Speaker 1: special care to provide. I first cautioned the Emperor not
20:14
Speaker 1: to be afraid, and then I let it off in
20:17
Speaker 1: the air. The astonishment here was much greater than at
20:21
Speaker 1: the sight of my cimeter. Hundreds fell down as if
20:24
Speaker 1: they had been struck dead, and even the Emperor, although
20:28
Speaker 1: he stood his ground, could not recover himself. For some time.
20:32
Speaker 1: I delivered up both my pistols in the same manner
20:34
Speaker 1: as I had done my cimeter, and then my pouch
20:37
Speaker 1: of powder and bullets, begging him that the former might
20:40
Speaker 1: be kept from fire, for it would kindle with the
20:43
Speaker 1: smallest spark and blow up his imperial palace into the air.
20:49
Speaker 1: I likewise delivered up my watch, which the Emperor was
20:52
Speaker 1: very curious to see, and commanded two of his tallest
20:55
Speaker 1: yeoman guards to bear it on a pole upon their shoulders.
21:00
Speaker 1: Draymond in England do a barrel of ale. He was
21:03
Speaker 1: amazed at the continual noise it made and the motion
21:06
Speaker 1: of the minute hand, which he could easily discern, for
21:09
Speaker 1: their sight is much more acute than ours. He asked
21:13
Speaker 1: the opinions of his learned men about it, which were
21:15
Speaker 1: various and remote, as the reader may well imagine, without
21:19
Speaker 1: my repeating, although indeed I could not very perfectly understand them.
21:25
Speaker 1: I then gave up my silver and copper money, my
21:27
Speaker 1: purse with nine large pieces of gold, and some smaller ones.
21:31
Speaker 1: My knife and razor, my comb and silver snuff box,
21:35
Speaker 1: my handkerchief and journal book, my cimitar, pistols, and pouch
21:39
Speaker 1: were conveyed in carriages to His Majesty's stores, but the
21:43
Speaker 1: rest of my goods were returned to me. I had,
21:47
Speaker 1: as I before, observed, one private pocket which escaped their search.
21:52
Speaker 1: Wherein there was a pair of spectacles, which I sometimes
21:56
Speaker 1: use for the weakness of mine eyes, a pocket perspective,
22:00
Speaker 1: and some other little conveniences, which, being of no consequence
22:04
Speaker 1: to the Emperor, I did not think myself bound in
22:07
Speaker 1: honor to discover, and I apprehended they might be lost
22:11
Speaker 1: or spoiled if I ventured them out of my possession.
22:15
