- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome to The Favorites the podcast. We are part of
- 0:13Speaker 1: Colin Cowherd's The Volume Network. Last week we debuted our
- 0:20Speaker 1: brand new Thursday episode because we've now gone to twice
- 0:23Speaker 1: a week since we joined Colin, me and my co host,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Simon Hunter. Last week Matt Mitchell, our producer, created one
- 0:30Speaker 1: of the most brilliant concepts we've ever had in the
- 0:32Speaker 1: history of the Action Network. He thought up the Thursday
- 0:38Speaker 1: Thundered Doome. This is where guests compete alongside me and
- 0:43Speaker 1: Simon Hunter in a battle of wagers and wits that
- 0:47Speaker 1: makes the g r E look like the puzzle on
- 0:50Speaker 1: the back of a Cereal box. Hello Simon, Hello Chad,
- 0:54Speaker 1: Yeah buddy. People were complaining that I was rigged last week.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I just want to remind people I've finished with zero points,
- 1:00Speaker 1: so no rigging here. I am terrible, even if tries
- 1:03Speaker 1: to help me out along the way. I only want
- 1:06Speaker 1: you to win. You are by far my favorite Action
- 1:09Speaker 1: Network employee and also my best friend and the coast
- 1:13Speaker 1: of the podcast, so I will do my best impression
- 1:15Speaker 1: of Tim Peel to fine makeup calls. Today You're gonna
- 1:19Speaker 1: face off against two challengers. Our first guest is seasoned
- 1:24Speaker 1: gambler Doctor Eric Eager from one of our favorite sites,
- 1:29Speaker 1: Pro Football Focus. He is the VP of Research and
- 1:31Speaker 1: Development at pf F co host of the PFF Forecast
- 1:36Speaker 1: podcast Doctor, Good to see you. Yeah, thanks for having
- 1:40Speaker 1: me on. This is uh, this is fun? What are
- 1:42Speaker 1: you dr? I have a PhD in math? Fucking loser, seriously,
- 1:47Speaker 1: a PhD in math. That sounds terrible. I actually had
- 1:51Speaker 1: a lot of fun. I was a math professed for
- 1:53Speaker 1: six years and then decided to work in football. It
- 1:56Speaker 1: was sort of the most precipitous intellectual decline of all time.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Where did you study math? What kind of math? And
- 2:02Speaker 1: then where were you a professor? So I I got
- 2:05Speaker 1: my PhD at the University of Nebraska. They were never
- 2:07Speaker 1: good at football when I was there, despite what everybody
- 2:10Speaker 1: in Lincoln said. I studied mathematical biology. So a lot
- 2:14Speaker 1: of the work I did when I was professor was
- 2:16Speaker 1: consulting for government labs and things like that. And I
- 2:20Speaker 1: taught it uh college called the University of Wisconsin Lacrosse,
- 2:23Speaker 1: which is in southwest Wisconsin. I taught there for six
- 2:26Speaker 1: years and it was a lot of fun and good.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Crazy thing is is obviously, football is more fun. You
- 2:30Speaker 1: don't really need to call yourself a doctor anymore, do you.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Like now, you're just doing it like to show off.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I usually I'm one of those like easy with that
- 2:37Speaker 1: doctor ship, like I can't help you your nosebleed type
- 2:40Speaker 1: of thing. I love it. I freaking love it. Dr
- 2:43Speaker 1: Eric Eager, our second guest. Oh boy, he also has
- 2:48Speaker 1: dr Hey, that's what I was looking for. Hey, you
- 2:52Speaker 1: may recognize the voice. It may be making your skin
- 2:56Speaker 1: crawl as you listen. Today we will all be rooting
- 2:59Speaker 1: a ends our friend Action Network Extraordinaire Executive Senior wonderful
- 3:07Speaker 1: producer news breaker Dren I'm ready. I already have a
- 3:13Speaker 1: natural rivalry because University of Nebraska somehow goes by and you.
- 3:19Speaker 1: They come into the Big Ten and they're like, we're
- 3:22Speaker 1: and you, And I'm like, it's University of Nebraska, it's you.
- 3:27Speaker 1: N Northwestern is the real and you. Is there any doubt?
- 3:31Speaker 1: So I already hate my my fellow contestant. I'm not
- 3:35Speaker 1: interested in that. Al right. Here's how the game is
- 3:38Speaker 1: played today. You'll answer two kinds of questions. First, traditional
- 3:41Speaker 1: trivia questions about sports, sports, betting, and the world at large,
- 3:45Speaker 1: but also completely subjective and totally assinine open ended prompts
- 3:51Speaker 1: that I will get to judge, which is how Simon
- 3:54Speaker 1: Hunter is going to win this game. To accimulate points,
- 3:56Speaker 1: you must answer the trivia questions correctly and all so
- 4:00Speaker 1: convinced me that your responses to those open ended prompts
- 4:03Speaker 1: are better than your opponents, because, just like sports betting,
- 4:07Speaker 1: you can't get them all. Right, contestants, here we go
- 4:12Speaker 1: hit that dance Part one. How sweet it is? March
- 4:17Speaker 1: Madness has delivered us a terrific sweet sixteen, But sixteen
- 4:21Speaker 1: isn't all it's crack up to be. Gentlemen, our first
- 4:25Speaker 1: question is for you, Darren. The films sixteen Candles, shot
- 4:30Speaker 1: on the North Shore of Chicago, where I grew up,
- 4:32Speaker 1: is a coming of age classic centered around a high
- 4:36Speaker 1: school sophomores sixteenth birthday. The female lead became an eighties
- 4:40Speaker 1: teen icon, and it was the first of many classic
- 4:42Speaker 1: films by the director name either the star or the director,
- 4:48Speaker 1: John Use. Darren gets one right, John Hughes. He directed
- 4:54Speaker 1: and wrote so many movies, shot them all in my
- 4:58Speaker 1: hometown literally, like like for five straight years it was
- 5:02Speaker 1: just movie sets in my hometown with Miley Ringwald and
- 5:06Speaker 1: the brat Pack. Best time to grow up in a town.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I mean it was amazing. Ferris Bueller breakfast Club. Not
- 5:12Speaker 1: even a John Hughes me movie, but risky business. It
- 5:15Speaker 1: was amazing, all right, Simon. A sweet sixteen party should
- 5:18Speaker 1: not be confused with this other kind of party, defined
- 5:22Speaker 1: as a celebration of a girl's fifteenth birthday, traditionally observed
- 5:26Speaker 1: in Latin American cultures. Uh kincon era man, I thought
- 5:34Speaker 1: was going to get bet. You get a point without
- 5:37Speaker 1: even needing me to cheat for you, Eric Eric. In
- 5:41Speaker 1: many states, turning sixteen means you can't get your learners
- 5:44Speaker 1: permit and finally get behind the wheel of a car.
- 5:47Speaker 1: But in for Western states, a driver can earn their
- 5:50Speaker 1: legit unrestricted license as early as their sixteenth birthday. Name
- 5:54Speaker 1: one of those states, Wyoming. The doctor is not in
- 6:00Speaker 1: the house. The answers are North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Hannah,
- 6:07Speaker 1: all right, here we go. Televangelists Oral Roberts locked himself
- 6:12Speaker 1: into his university's prayer tower and began fasting, telling his
- 6:17Speaker 1: followers he'd quote be called home if they didn't raise
- 6:22Speaker 1: eight million dollars in the next three months and it worked.
- 6:27Speaker 1: All I can say to that is Jesus fucking Christ.
- 6:29Speaker 1: If you could pocket a cool eight million dollars if
- 6:33Speaker 1: Oral Roberts win it all this year, what would you
- 6:36Speaker 1: be willing to do to make it happen? Simon? Your first,
- 6:40Speaker 1: My answer is gonna be weird, just because a lot
- 6:42Speaker 1: of people do a lot of things to get a
- 6:43Speaker 1: million dollars and honestly wouldn't be here. Of course I'd
- 6:47Speaker 1: want it, but mine's gonna be weird. So the worst
- 6:50Speaker 1: scenario for me is either going to involve spiders or
- 6:53Speaker 1: being trapped with a person I hate. If you've ever
- 6:56Speaker 1: gone away in a bachelor party, you get stuck with
- 6:58Speaker 1: a weekend with a bunch of eyes. For some reason, man,
- 7:01Speaker 1: I always attract that one guy at the party that
- 7:03Speaker 1: likes to tell the twenty minute stories. It makes my
- 7:06Speaker 1: skin crawled just thinking about this week and I had
- 7:07Speaker 1: with this guy the entire weekend. He would just kept
- 7:10Speaker 1: telling me twenty five minute stories. You just wouldn't leave
- 7:13Speaker 1: me alone for the entire weekend. That's the limit I push.
- 7:15Speaker 1: If someone would say, I will give you eight million
- 7:17Speaker 1: dollars to spend a weekend with this guy telling you
- 7:20Speaker 1: five minute stories. I'll do that. I'll take that deal.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Oh my god, that does seem like torture, Like just
- 7:25Speaker 1: on a loop. You just keep living the same thing,
- 7:27Speaker 1: groundhog Day. You know it's funny. Is last night at
- 7:29Speaker 1: dinner my kids who are seventeen and fourteen, my teenage boys,
- 7:33Speaker 1: for some reason, they asked me about my bachelor party.
- 7:37Speaker 1: And my bachelor party, I went to Vegas with a
- 7:40Speaker 1: bunch of buddies, and then that night we were going
- 7:42Speaker 1: out to dinner. That Saturday night, I walked into one
- 7:45Speaker 1: of my buddies hotel rooms and he's like, man, you
- 7:47Speaker 1: look great tonight. I'm like thanks, And he pulls out
- 7:50Speaker 1: an Elvis polyester one piece jumpsuit, a wig, and oversized
- 7:55Speaker 1: plastic gold glasses, uh sunglasses for me to wear. And
- 8:00Speaker 1: I was dressed as Elvis the entire night. And I
- 8:02Speaker 1: gotta tell you, you you want to have the greatest night
- 8:04Speaker 1: of your life dresses Elvis in Vegas for your bachelor party.
- 8:08Speaker 1: You are the front of the line everywhere. And then
- 8:10Speaker 1: somehow my wife, who doesn't even know I have a podcast,
- 8:15Speaker 1: even though I've mentioned it a thousand times, knew exactly
- 8:17Speaker 1: where the pictures were from. My bachelor party in and
- 8:21Speaker 1: found them and showed them to the kids. You gotta
- 8:23Speaker 1: post them. You gotta post them in that either the
- 8:25Speaker 1: slack or you gotta post those chats. Walk right into
- 8:28Speaker 1: that one, didn't I, Eric, Yeah, this one's pretty easy
- 8:30Speaker 1: for like this, You know, crowd, isn't it. I mean
- 8:33Speaker 1: to not be able to bet on sports for like
- 8:35Speaker 1: three to six months, like Oral Roberts was trapped in
- 8:38Speaker 1: his office for three months, like let's say three months
- 8:41Speaker 1: now betting on sports for eight million dollars, I do it. No,
- 8:44Speaker 1: that's a terrible answer. That's awful. Simon is putting himself
- 8:48Speaker 1: in a endless loop of torture. And you're saying I
- 8:51Speaker 1: won't bet on sports for three months or six months,
- 8:53Speaker 1: but by the time football rolls around, all of eight
- 8:55Speaker 1: million dollars to bet on sports again. Forget about it, Darren.
- 8:59Speaker 1: You gotta beat something. Well, Listen, I've done more crazy
- 9:02Speaker 1: things in the last two years thanks to Fade revel
- 9:05Speaker 1: presented by Points Bent than arguably any person in the world.
- 9:10Speaker 1: When I think about what would really be the worst
- 9:14Speaker 1: thing for me, and I heard Simon with spiders, I
- 9:16Speaker 1: think of a a creature. When I was five, I
- 9:20Speaker 1: stepped on a frog and it's squished. It's been, you know,
- 9:24Speaker 1: thirty eight years since that happened, and I still feel
- 9:28Speaker 1: the gooze in the bottom of my shoe. And I
- 9:33Speaker 1: am scared of frogs like you wouldn't believe. When I
- 9:38Speaker 1: found in my pool filter a bull frog two years ago,
- 9:43Speaker 1: I screamed so loud that someone was going to call
- 9:47Speaker 1: the police because they thought someone was being murdered. I
- 9:51Speaker 1: will stay in a room full of as many frogs
- 9:55Speaker 1: as you could put in it for I would do
- 9:59Speaker 1: it for a week two eight billion dollars. You know what.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Here's when you won. You won when you said stepped
- 10:09Speaker 1: on a frog. It actually gave me the willies like
- 10:12Speaker 1: I had, like the shivers, and I felt my shoulders shake.
- 10:15Speaker 1: That's when I knew you want. I had a visceral
- 10:17Speaker 1: feeling about the frog. Darrivel you in our first prompt
- 10:21Speaker 1: of what would you do for eight million dollars stay
- 10:25Speaker 1: in a room full of frogs for a week? Nice job?
- 10:28Speaker 1: Round two? Are you guys ready? Here we go, Let's
- 10:30Speaker 1: play a game we call shop around March Madness has
- 10:43Speaker 1: been great so far, and to celebrate, a trio of
- 10:45Speaker 1: Sweet sixteen matchups. I will present you with three things,
- 10:51Speaker 1: okay number one, a retail item number two and actual
- 10:56Speaker 1: eBay item with a buy it now option number three,
- 11:00Speaker 1: a specific dollar amount to spend. Your job is to
- 11:04Speaker 1: tell me which you can afford and which you can't.
- 11:06Speaker 1: So Simon, you have eighty dollars? Can you afford? This
- 11:10Speaker 1: is the actual item the original face value of two
- 11:14Speaker 1: good seats to the Villanova Georgetown n C double A
- 11:18Speaker 1: championship game, or this item currently on eBay A Baylor
- 11:23Speaker 1: apron from one with kitchen quarterback across the front. You
- 11:28Speaker 1: got eighty bucks. Which of these two things can you afford?
- 11:32Speaker 1: Goes you way further back then, So I'm gonna go
- 11:34Speaker 1: to Georgetown Villanova game. You're close. The tickets were forty
- 11:39Speaker 1: three dollars each, so that was eighty six the apron
- 11:41Speaker 1: somehow the apron is seventy dollars. Steele, Dr Eric, you
- 11:47Speaker 1: have three and can you afford the total price of
- 11:51Speaker 1: all forty entrees at Hugoes, trip Advisor's top rated restaurant
- 11:56Speaker 1: in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I know Matt Mitchell is so big
- 12:00Speaker 1: Z and I cannot believe he actually did the research
- 12:03Speaker 1: thought of this question and then research the forty entres
- 12:06Speaker 1: that Hugoes at trip Advisor's top Radar restaurant in Fayette, Arkansas,
- 12:10Speaker 1: or an autographed first edition of Oral Roberts autobiography currently
- 12:16Speaker 1: on eBay. Again, you have three given what the money
- 12:21Speaker 1: that the televangelists rake in, I'm gonna go with Hugos. Listen,
- 12:27Speaker 1: Dr Eric, you did the math? I feel like that
- 12:30Speaker 1: should be your buzzword. Like if if this were a sitcom,
- 12:32Speaker 1: it would be like, Dr Eric did the math? Have
- 12:34Speaker 1: you seen the plans at these dudes fly in? Yeah?
- 12:37Speaker 1: No joke right. The cost of the entrees at Hugoes
- 12:41Speaker 1: is three hundred and nine five dollars the book short,
- 12:48Speaker 1: nice answer, Dr Eric. Darren, you have fifty dollars? Can
- 12:53Speaker 1: you afford a legitimate, fully tanned beaver pelt for sale
- 12:57Speaker 1: on Etsy? Or a mid condition to was an eighteen
- 13:00Speaker 1: Sister Jean Leola Chicago bubble head currently available on eBay.
- 13:04Speaker 1: By the way, don't forget Darren revel Buyer's Market every
- 13:08Speaker 1: other week on Sunday's sponsored by eBay. I'm gonna say
- 13:13Speaker 1: that a beaver pelt is relatively expense I mean, it's
- 13:17Speaker 1: a real Beaver pelt compared to a produced bubble head.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I know the original cost of that bubble head was
- 13:24Speaker 1: twenty five dollars, so I don't know how much Dave
- 13:27Speaker 1: inflated it, but I'm going to say the Sister Jeane
- 13:30Speaker 1: bobble head is the cheaper of the two. The pelt
- 13:34Speaker 1: is forty five dollars, the bubble head is eight. I'm
- 13:37Speaker 1: going to protest that question, so on the protest is noted,
- 13:40Speaker 1: it will be ignored. All right, guys, Next up, March
- 13:44Speaker 1: Madness is fun, but nothing beats the NFL. So let's
- 13:46Speaker 1: build a fan duel. Parlett looking at the championship odds
- 13:50Speaker 1: for the Sweet sixteen and the latest Super Bowl odds
- 13:53Speaker 1: of Simon, You're gonna love this. Make your case for
- 13:55Speaker 1: the best championship parlay combining a Sweet sixteen team with
- 13:59Speaker 1: their closest NFL team. Eric so I interpreted close closest
- 14:04Speaker 1: as like geography, so I'm going with Syracuse and Buffalo.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I think you're trying to play to the producer Matt Mitchell,
- 14:15Speaker 1: who grew up in western New York and loves the
- 14:18Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills. Dr Eric takes Buffalo and Buffalo Bills and
- 14:22Speaker 1: Syracuse for seven one. I actually had the same answer.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I am going with the Buffalo Bills and the Syracuse Orange.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Oh all right, well, Darres taking the same thing. I
- 14:33Speaker 1: did it backwards, like I didn't do sweet six team. First,
- 14:36Speaker 1: I did how far down can I get to a
- 14:39Speaker 1: real winner? And I got Buffalo, And then I said, okay,
- 14:41Speaker 1: well what's the closest team? Syracuse? Wow? What a joy?
- 14:45Speaker 1: There's only two teams that are have worse odds than Syracuse.
- 14:48Speaker 1: And when you're making a parlor, you got to take
- 14:50Speaker 1: a step. So seven one that's what I went with
- 14:52Speaker 1: as well. All right, Eric and Darren both went with
- 14:56Speaker 1: Buffalo Syracuse. Simon, what do you got, buddy? Yeah? I
- 14:59Speaker 1: thought was like, who has the closest odds and one another?
- 15:02Speaker 1: So a team I love in the tournament that's still
- 15:04Speaker 1: got great odds. Oregon State the Beavers plus seven thousand,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and we talked about them on our last show. The Giants.
- 15:11Speaker 1: I might not believe in them, but they do have
- 15:13Speaker 1: a chance, and their odds are pretty crazy where they're
- 15:15Speaker 1: plus six thousand, five hundred. So combining those two together,
- 15:19Speaker 1: it's like you bet ten bucks you're gonna win three
- 15:21Speaker 1: dollars so Oregon State and the Giants? How many? How
- 15:24Speaker 1: much money is going to be lost by by people
- 15:28Speaker 1: chasing the Josh Allen thing? Right? Like quarterback who's crap
- 15:32Speaker 1: for the first couple of years can at the broadside
- 15:33Speaker 1: of the barn ends up being eventually very good? Are
- 15:37Speaker 1: we applying this to Drew Lock and Daniel Jones? Like?
- 15:40Speaker 1: How much? How many futures bets are gonna be placed
- 15:42Speaker 1: by Josh Allen? Like quarterbacks coming up here? The host
- 15:45Speaker 1: of the podcast did that, But I will say the
- 15:49Speaker 1: host of the podcast also bet on probably one third
- 15:52Speaker 1: of the teams in the NFL thanks to Simon Hunter.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And by the way, Simon Hunter, you win, my friend.
- 15:59Speaker 1: You know why I interpreted the question the same way
- 16:01Speaker 1: you did. I wasn't thinking closest geographically. I was thinking
- 16:05Speaker 1: which odds are closest for teams in the Sweet sixteen
- 16:08Speaker 1: and teams in the NFL? Because you think like I think,
- 16:11Speaker 1: because I think like you think, and we are companions
- 16:14Speaker 1: you in that round. This show is bullshit, your bullshit.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Let's get an update on the score. Dr Eric has
- 16:21Speaker 1: one point. He answered one question correctly, not so smart
- 16:26Speaker 1: he Simon has two points. Simon barely went to college
- 16:30Speaker 1: and was a grip on Jersey Shore. Darren went to Northwestern.
- 16:34Speaker 1: He has two points. So right now, the guys with
- 16:37Speaker 1: fewer degrees are beating the guy with the most degrees.
- 16:40Speaker 1: That's how I'm seeing it. It's it's it's a couple
- 16:42Speaker 1: of degrees of separation, all right. Round three. The season
- 16:48Speaker 1: that never sleeps. Gamblers have kept a keen eye on
- 16:51Speaker 1: NFL free agency, with familiar faces landing in new places
- 16:54Speaker 1: all month long. Let's talk about it, Simon, Oh boy.
- 16:57Speaker 1: The Indian Apples Colds been quiet this offseason, except for
- 17:00Speaker 1: a trade for quarterback Carson Wentz, who look to recapture
- 17:03Speaker 1: his college heyday in North Dakota State. Wentz was a
- 17:06Speaker 1: member of five national championship teams, and they've now won
- 17:11Speaker 1: eight of the last nine FCS titles. That is North
- 17:14Speaker 1: Dakoast State. Besides the Bison, nine other FCS programs have
- 17:18Speaker 1: won the national championship this century. Name one of them.
- 17:22Speaker 1: I'm hoping this is right because this is a this
- 17:25Speaker 1: is a really legendary school in the East Coast, because
- 17:28Speaker 1: that has some of the prettiest women. J m U.
- 17:32Speaker 1: James Madison University a lot of good times down there.
- 17:36Speaker 1: That's a that's a fun party school. We're looking for
- 17:38Speaker 1: a smaller school that sounds a good football program. Jam
- 17:40Speaker 1: you man, that's a fun school. It's it's ridiculous. You
- 17:43Speaker 1: have like this glee When he gets it right, you're like, yes,
- 17:47Speaker 1: I mean, what kind of judge does that? Don't be
- 17:50Speaker 1: gel staring. I just I just came on this show
- 17:53Speaker 1: thinking it was going to be a fair It's still
- 17:55Speaker 1: may be fair. I gave you the frog answer. I
- 17:57Speaker 1: didn't give it to Simon. By the way, dr Era,
- 18:00Speaker 1: he's not complaining. He's smarter than all of us combined.
- 18:03Speaker 1: He's not complaining. The Pro Football Focus guys complain a
- 18:05Speaker 1: lot less than the Action Network guys. By the way,
- 18:08Speaker 1: that's why they're winners, Darren. The Dallas Cowboys are currently
- 18:11Speaker 1: thirty to one to win the Super Bowl after locking
- 18:13Speaker 1: up quarterback Dak Prescott with a contract worth a hundred
- 18:17Speaker 1: million guaranteed. A hundred and twenty six million dollars is
- 18:20Speaker 1: just enough to give one dollar to every citizen of
- 18:23Speaker 1: this Asian country consisting of five main islands um let's
- 18:32Speaker 1: say Japan Japan. Eric After Drew Brees retired, many assumed
- 18:40Speaker 1: Jamis Winston will be the new Orleans Saints starting QB
- 18:44Speaker 1: after he resigned last week. They also restructured the deal
- 18:47Speaker 1: of their due it all quarterback Taysom Hill. His new
- 18:51Speaker 1: four year, one hundred and forty million dollar contracts seems outrageous,
- 18:55Speaker 1: but is actually a clever maneuver to immediately free up
- 18:58Speaker 1: more money against the salary cap. It reminds many in
- 19:01Speaker 1: the region of another seemingly expensive deal that turned out
- 19:06Speaker 1: to be a brilliant asset maneuver, the Louisiana purchase and
- 19:09Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell's right. I believe the time to pick a
- 19:12Speaker 1: n did a front page at bed on How Taysom
- 19:14Speaker 1: Hill do you? Is just like the Louisiana purchase. In
- 19:17Speaker 1: eighteen oh three, the United States paid fifteen million dollars
- 19:20Speaker 1: for the Louisiana territory from this French ruler. The history
- 19:27Speaker 1: is not is not my strong suit. I'm going to
- 19:30Speaker 1: give you a hint. Okay, I'll put it in math terms.
- 19:34Speaker 1: The total number of letters in his first and last
- 19:38Speaker 1: name is. I don't think that's gonna help that off
- 19:43Speaker 1: for me. Some would say he tried to compensate for
- 19:47Speaker 1: his height by conquering lands. Oh man, I'll have to pass,
- 19:52Speaker 1: do I do? I lose a point for passing. You
- 19:54Speaker 1: lose a point for being a fucking PhD and not
- 19:57Speaker 1: knowing that Napoleon the only fresh ruler that anybody in
- 20:01Speaker 1: any history class knows. Sorry Jesus Christ, Dr Eric H.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Here's the next prompt. The Buffalo Bills enjoyed a breakout
- 20:10Speaker 1: year from Josh Allen, and earlier this month signed a
- 20:13Speaker 1: much malign quarterback named Mitch true Whisky to serve as
- 20:18Speaker 1: his new backup. Please give me your best comparison for
- 20:21Speaker 1: this kind of backup plan. For example, like I'm saying,
- 20:25Speaker 1: backing up Josh Allen with Mitch true Bisky is like
- 20:29Speaker 1: your wife saying she can't go on your honeymoon, so
- 20:32Speaker 1: you go with your dentist instead. Daring you're up first. Uh.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I had a aquarium in my house, and I was
- 20:41Speaker 1: on a plane, and I was having I had a
- 20:43Speaker 1: fake aquarium, and I bought a shark. But I thought
- 20:46Speaker 1: I bought a shark with fake dollars. When I got
- 20:49Speaker 1: off the plane, it turned out that it charged my
- 20:52Speaker 1: credit card fifty dollars for a fake shark, and so
- 20:56Speaker 1: I thought I was getting a fake shark for free,
- 20:59Speaker 1: and I out a fake shark for money. What what,
- 21:04Speaker 1: I don't even get it. That's terrible, Eric, this is
- 21:07Speaker 1: your chance to redeem yourself. You know, one of the
- 21:09Speaker 1: great television shows in the last decade, House of Cards,
- 21:13Speaker 1: when Frank Underwood played by Kevin Spacey, became the president,
- 21:17Speaker 1: he chose one Donald Blies to be as vice president,
- 21:19Speaker 1: who had to be the weakest person in that entire show.
- 21:23Speaker 1: The the idea of backing up Frank Underwood with Donald
- 21:27Speaker 1: live to me like one of the backup plans that
- 21:30Speaker 1: stuck out to me as being one of the worst.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I loved that show. Amazing show. And then after all
- 21:36Speaker 1: the sexual assault allegations against Kevin Spacey, he kind of
- 21:41Speaker 1: went around the bend right and just kept responding to
- 21:43Speaker 1: the allegations as Frank Underwood and that was fucking weird. Yea,
- 21:47Speaker 1: but that is a great, great answer, Eric, Simon, give
- 21:50Speaker 1: me an answer that I'm assuming we'll just be better
- 21:53Speaker 1: than everybody else's. Oh yeah, this is this is an
- 21:55Speaker 1: easy one. You'd be shocked into the shot. I was
- 21:57Speaker 1: a problem shot as a kid. Um If I saw
- 21:59Speaker 1: a fire alarm, I had to pull it and that
- 22:01Speaker 1: probably went from like age eight to like ten, could
- 22:03Speaker 1: not be left alone. I always a pull fire alarm.
- 22:05Speaker 1: So my dad I think he had enough and he goes,
- 22:08Speaker 1: you want to go to Disneyland, and he hyped it
- 22:10Speaker 1: up and I was like, yeah, let's go to Disneyland
- 22:13Speaker 1: and packed all my stuff in the car. It was
- 22:15Speaker 1: just me and him going. I thought we were going,
- 22:17Speaker 1: and he took me to It was like this rinky
- 22:20Speaker 1: dinky like fair park kind of thing where they had
- 22:23Speaker 1: like a little roller coaster. Like I thinking, I'm parking
- 22:25Speaker 1: lot of a strip mall. He goes, this is where
- 22:27Speaker 1: I'll take you, and I'm taking your brothers a Disneyland.
- 22:29Speaker 1: You keep being bad. So this is like a perfect
- 22:32Speaker 1: example of you think you're going to Disneyland, you're getting
- 22:35Speaker 1: Josh Allen, and then you get your local strip mall,
- 22:37Speaker 1: roller coaster and Mitsky. Oh my god, that's horrible and amazing.
- 22:43Speaker 1: And as I listened, I really wanted Dr Eric to win,
- 22:47Speaker 1: because he deserves it. But that answer is just too good.
- 22:50Speaker 1: That's that that's such a great parenting move. I kind
- 22:54Speaker 1: of want to use it right now. That's a good answer, Simon,
- 22:56Speaker 1: you win. I'm sorry, Dr Era, in honor of our
- 22:58Speaker 1: very special guest, doctor Eric Eager, who earned a math
- 23:01Speaker 1: PhD from the University of Nebraska, also known as n You.
- 23:05Speaker 1: We're going to celebrate some of society's most determined and
- 23:08Speaker 1: resilient contributors, who, even at the top of the game,
- 23:11Speaker 1: too often toil in obscurity. We're talking, of course, about
- 23:15Speaker 1: and NHL players and the world's foremost scientists. So we're
- 23:19Speaker 1: going to play a little game we call hockey player
- 23:24Speaker 1: or famous scientist. The game is very simple. I give
- 23:28Speaker 1: you a name, You tell me if it's a current
- 23:29Speaker 1: NHL player or one of planet Earth's greatest scientist. Fucking
- 23:34Speaker 1: Matt Mitchell is unbelievable. I cannot believe this is how
- 23:36Speaker 1: he spent it. It's such it's so fascinating. Darren Europe first,
- 23:42Speaker 1: Martin carplus scientists or hockey player scientist quantum chemist who
- 23:49Speaker 1: won the two thousand thirteen Nobel Prize in chemistry. Very nice,
- 23:53Speaker 1: Eric Christian now Slane voll Hard. I don't know much hockey,
- 24:00Speaker 1: but I'm gonna take a stab that this is an
- 24:01Speaker 1: NHL player. You studied mathematical biology, development biologist. She was
- 24:11Speaker 1: really in physiology, and medicine. Good for her. Simon news
- 24:18Speaker 1: hog Lander, legendary defender. I'll take a hockey player. He
- 24:23Speaker 1: is a hockey player. He plays for the Vancouver Canucks.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Darren Vene Vestergard how I would say that's a scientist,
- 24:34Speaker 1: Danish quantum physicist named world Dane in two thousand ten.
- 24:40Speaker 1: I feel like I'm pronouncing these names so well, and
- 24:43Speaker 1: I don't even know if it's read Eric Eric Ready
- 24:46Speaker 1: Jeene for shame. Well, there's a derivative named after for Shay.
- 24:50Speaker 1: So it's a scientist French American biotechnologist. He co invented
- 24:57Speaker 1: chemically amplified materials, a critical part of the miniaturization of
- 25:01Speaker 1: nearly all electronic devices. We all owe a debt to Mr.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Or maybe it's doctor for share Simon Joel Ericsson eck,
- 25:11Speaker 1: that's my second favorite ever microbiologists. I'm a scientist also
- 25:17Speaker 1: amazingly plays for the Minnesota Wild. I needed Simon and missing.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I thought you were tried. I thought you're gonna try
- 25:25Speaker 1: to trick me. Darren Thomas sued over the U he's
- 25:33Speaker 1: a hockey player. I said that over to you because
- 25:36Speaker 1: I figured it would throw you off and make you
- 25:38Speaker 1: think He was a Swedish hockey player, biochemist and leader
- 25:41Speaker 1: in the field of synaptic transmissions. Eric Eric Nicholas Ellers
- 25:49Speaker 1: come on, come on, wait Eric, Eric, Eric, you just
- 25:53Speaker 1: got a scientist. This goes against everything you guys teach
- 25:57Speaker 1: a tan, which is like you never do right. Maybe
- 26:00Speaker 1: we're loading, but I will say I will say hockey
- 26:03Speaker 1: player though, plays for the Winnipeg Jets. Way to go, Eric,
- 26:08Speaker 1: Way to follow the math Simon Yegor Sharon go Vich
- 26:14Speaker 1: definitely sounds like a Russian hockey player. Bogo scientist dude
- 26:19Speaker 1: plays for the New Jersey Devils. No, no, no, no,
- 26:24Speaker 1: I'm wearing as we speak. You're a Flyers guy. Here
- 26:27Speaker 1: we go. Well done, Matt Mitchell. That was fantastic, an
- 26:30Speaker 1: amazing segment. Right now. The current score Darn Revel has five,
- 26:35Speaker 1: Simon has four, Eric has three. I like that it's
- 26:38Speaker 1: a close race. I kind of want Eric to win.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Just saying if anyone's betting on this, which there probably
- 26:42Speaker 1: should be some lines on this posted on some sports book.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Let's work on getting a sponsor for that. On this podcast,
- 26:48Speaker 1: we celebrate math and science because both play a huge
- 26:51Speaker 1: role in the world of sports gambling. Into a less
- 26:53Speaker 1: interesting extent at the rest of our lives. Imagine you're
- 26:56Speaker 1: in charge of a hundred million dollar research budget at
- 26:58Speaker 1: a major university. You aren't charge with advancing the art
- 27:01Speaker 1: and science of sports betting and therefore the betterment of
- 27:04Speaker 1: planet Earth. What research do you immediately green light? What
- 27:09Speaker 1: do you hope to discover? Darren, you're up first. Well,
- 27:11Speaker 1: I've been talking a lot about dopamine and all these
- 27:14Speaker 1: things and basically saying that everything is sports betting these days.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I would try to do some sort of science project
- 27:22Speaker 1: involving nerve function and dopamine study to figure out how
- 27:27Speaker 1: sports betting is different from crypto is different from investing
- 27:31Speaker 1: in memorabilia is different. So study all those areas and
- 27:35Speaker 1: find out if sports betting has a holds a different
- 27:40Speaker 1: nerve function or part of your brain than other gambling outfits.
- 27:45Speaker 1: I would like to know how sports betting is different
- 27:48Speaker 1: from other forms of gambling biologically. Oh my god, that's
- 27:52Speaker 1: such a good idea. I'm so proud of you. That's
- 27:54Speaker 1: a great answer. Let's do it. Eric. I like Darren's answer.
- 27:58Speaker 1: The question is how do you build in a control?
- 28:01Speaker 1: Because I would say that's a lot of money. So
- 28:04Speaker 1: you could obviously build a sports book within a university.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Anybody you know signing up for a college now gets
- 28:11Speaker 1: a card that has you know, Bison Bucks or Dragon
- 28:15Speaker 1: Dollar or something like that. Every student is subsidized, given
- 28:18Speaker 1: a certain bankroll every single year that they're allowed to bet.
- 28:21Speaker 1: And the data from which these these students you know
- 28:25Speaker 1: bet with is publicly available through a dot gov account,
- 28:29Speaker 1: so that all the great people at Action Network, PFF, Gambling, Twitter,
- 28:33Speaker 1: whatever can study the patterns and behaviors of eighteen to
- 28:38Speaker 1: twenty two year olds betting. You know, the National Science
- 28:41Speaker 1: Foundation's money. Interesting. Interesting, So you want to build a
- 28:46Speaker 1: controlled sports betting experience on a campus. What is the
- 28:52Speaker 1: end result? You're gonna be like a sports book. You're
- 28:54Speaker 1: gonna have you know, user behavior. You can find out
- 28:57Speaker 1: what the characteristics are going on, tilt are, who, who
- 29:01Speaker 1: the sharp betters are, how how do they synthesize information?
- 29:04Speaker 1: And obviously that data being available means that every single
- 29:07Speaker 1: statistics class on that university will be the best statistics
- 29:10Speaker 1: class that's ever been invented. But why can't I just
- 29:13Speaker 1: do that in partnership with a sports book? I guess
- 29:18Speaker 1: the difference is like you get access to the human beings, right,
- 29:22Speaker 1: access to the human beings, but also the data would
- 29:24Speaker 1: be free, like publicly available since it's a you know,
- 29:27Speaker 1: United States funded research project, just like a fit data
- 29:31Speaker 1: is available and stuff like that. Let me ask you
- 29:33Speaker 1: a very important question. Your success in this game depends
- 29:36Speaker 1: on you answering this correctly. If you had never heard
- 29:39Speaker 1: Darren's answer, would you include the ability to study all
- 29:44Speaker 1: speculative markets so that way you could truly understand the
- 29:48Speaker 1: difference between n f T, crypto and sports betting, etcetera. Yeah,
- 29:53Speaker 1: I think it's a bigger problem though, right, because part
- 29:55Speaker 1: of the using the money is to build the experience, right.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I think the experience of sports betting, to Darren's probably point,
- 30:02Speaker 1: it sets it apart. You don't go to a bar
- 30:05Speaker 1: to like buy an option, you know, drink beer and
- 30:09Speaker 1: watch that thing evolve over time. I like your answer
- 30:12Speaker 1: a lot. It feels very practical, and it might it
- 30:15Speaker 1: might consume Darren's idea. It might. Simon, I would update
- 30:19Speaker 1: the doomsday clock. It's been like a minute away from
- 30:22Speaker 1: the world destruction since like the sixties. I want to
- 30:25Speaker 1: update it with sports gambling nods. So I want to
- 30:27Speaker 1: know are we minus two hundred to keep going for
- 30:29Speaker 1: the next year, are we are we plus two thousand
- 30:32Speaker 1: to be knocked out in the next couple of years.
- 30:33Speaker 1: I wish they would update it where it's like gambling
- 30:35Speaker 1: nods instead of just like clock that's like, oh, we're
- 30:38Speaker 1: five minutes away, or we're one minute away, we're thirty
- 30:40Speaker 1: seconds away. I feel like it would be a great
- 30:43Speaker 1: thing to come by in both worlds at the end
- 30:44Speaker 1: of the world and the gambling nods. I think part
- 30:47Speaker 1: of the way you sell an idea is in the
- 30:51Speaker 1: language selling an idea that says we're spending a hundred
- 30:56Speaker 1: million dollars to update the doomsday clock. It's like saying
- 31:00Speaker 1: we're going to Mars. There may be a practical application,
- 31:03Speaker 1: there may not be a practical application, but it will
- 31:05Speaker 1: rally people. It will get people excited. There will be
- 31:09Speaker 1: stories about in the paper, Oh my god, the doomsday clock.
- 31:12Speaker 1: It's being updated to reflect where we are in society,
- 31:16Speaker 1: which is increasing legalization of sports betting, increasing in acceptance
- 31:20Speaker 1: of sports betting, increasing love of sports betting. And we're
- 31:24Speaker 1: spending this money because it will make people happier and
- 31:27Speaker 1: help them better understand what sports betting is I'm not
- 31:30Speaker 1: going with the fucking geeks. I'm going with doomsday. Clock.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Whole show is rigged. The whole show is rigged. Here
- 31:37Speaker 1: is the current score for our grand finale. Simon now
- 31:42Speaker 1: has five, Darren's got a five. Air Scott the ra
- 31:44Speaker 1: al Right, here we go. I need Eric to fucking
- 31:47Speaker 1: rally here. The topic is the Kansas Jayhawks. How much
- 31:52Speaker 1: would you guys each like to risk? Please text your
- 31:55Speaker 1: amount to producer show creator. Nothing doomsday about him, Matt Mitchell. Okay,
- 32:01Speaker 1: here we go. Starting around CBS, broadcasters began referring to
- 32:07Speaker 1: this round of March Madness as the Sweet Sixteen, before
- 32:11Speaker 1: learning it was already trademarked by the Kentucky High School
- 32:14Speaker 1: Athletic Association. The trademark issue was eventually settled, but also
- 32:19Speaker 1: gave America one of the biggest upsets in n C
- 32:22Speaker 1: Double A Championship history, when six seated Kansas defeated one
- 32:27Speaker 1: seed Oklahoma in the finals as eight point underdogs. On
- 32:32Speaker 1: the floor, Kansas was led by Danny Manning and the
- 32:35Speaker 1: team was nicknamed Danny in the Miracles. But on the bench,
- 32:38Speaker 1: Kansas was led by this coach, the only coach ever
- 32:42Speaker 1: to win both in n C Double A and nb
- 32:44Speaker 1: A Championship. The answers are in, and the answer is
- 32:52Speaker 1: Larry Brown. He also won with the Detroit Pistons. Simon,
- 32:57Speaker 1: give me your answer and the points that you ajured.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I'm embarrassed the Sixers fan. I knew it was him,
- 33:03Speaker 1: and I couldn't remember his last name. I was like,
- 33:05Speaker 1: it's Larry something. So I sold out and I said
- 33:07Speaker 1: Phil Jackson, like, I only waged at one point, so
- 33:13Speaker 1: I'm at four points. Now, Wow, interesting strategy. Last week
- 33:16Speaker 1: you went all in, okay, Darren, I did answer Larry Brown,
- 33:20Speaker 1: and I wagered zero? What yes? Why? Because I thought
- 33:27Speaker 1: that I couldn't deal with Kansas upset alert. But when
- 33:31Speaker 1: you go history on me, when you go sports history
- 33:34Speaker 1: on me, I'm real good. So I was not sure
- 33:36Speaker 1: you were going to go back, and once you go back,
- 33:39Speaker 1: Once you went back, I was like, oh my god,
- 33:41Speaker 1: I have I have five points. Now you've got five,
- 33:44Speaker 1: Simon's got four. This is for all the marbles right here. Yeah.
- 33:48Speaker 1: My NBA knowledge has declined substantially over the last ten
- 33:52Speaker 1: fifteen years. Luckily for me, Larry Brown was coach prior
- 33:56Speaker 1: to that time. I shoved all three of my chips
- 33:59Speaker 1: into the middle and said, Larry Brown, no way. This
- 34:09Speaker 1: is Dr Eric Eager Pro Football Focus, proving it coming
- 34:16Speaker 1: through in the end, using all his algorithms that he
- 34:19Speaker 1: studied for all these years to give himself six points
- 34:22Speaker 1: to win the Thursday Thunderdome and bringing up the rear
- 34:26Speaker 1: for the second week in row. Simon Hunter, you have
- 34:29Speaker 1: no bigger advocate than the host and judge of the show.
- 34:32Speaker 1: I know I'm good with the imagination, so I can
- 34:34Speaker 1: give fun questions, but these Jeopardy questions when you keep
- 34:37Speaker 1: killing me, You're You're doing questions before the nineteen nineties,
- 34:39Speaker 1: before I was even born. You're killing me. I freaking
- 34:43Speaker 1: love it all. Right, before we sign off, here's a
- 34:46Speaker 1: word from our fearless leader, Action Network CEO Patrick King.
