- 0:27welcome to sunday sunday
- 0:30sunday beat down by the san
- 0:34francisco forty-niners as
- 0:35you can see my co-host
- 0:37carolyn privo is rubbing it
- 0:39in my face uh pretty hard
- 0:42that there's her
- 0:44forty-niners beat my
- 0:45chicago bears um so yeah
- 0:52I didn't get to see it so
- 0:53you'll have to I mean I
- 0:54could see I was following
- 0:56the score like through my
- 0:57google but that's it like I
- 0:59couldn't watch it well I
- 1:01think like the most
- 1:02disappointing thing was we
- 1:03fire a coach after the
- 1:05lions debacle on
- 1:06thanksgiving you're
- 1:08expecting like like an
- 1:10energy jump right yeah
- 1:12And we got the exact opposite.
- 1:14We've been playing with
- 1:15energy and just losing at
- 1:16the end of games because of
- 1:17stupid coaching.
- 1:19Then we show up to in San
- 1:21Francisco and like we
- 1:22didn't even want to play.
- 1:23And I say we in the stupid way.
- 1:26I hate I'm not really a we.
- 1:28They played a terrible game.
- 1:31So we'll move on from that.
- 1:35We'll move on real fast.
- 1:37Yeah.
- 1:37Yeah.
- 1:38But my other team,
- 1:38my Penn State Nittany Lions,
- 1:40also lost this weekend in
- 1:41the Big Ten Championship game.
- 1:43But Oregon's good.
- 1:46But they're in the playoffs.
- 1:48And for the first time this year,
- 1:50I feel like they can hang.
- 1:55Who's their matchup?
- 1:57So they have SMU to start.
- 2:01And if they win, then Boise State.
- 2:02They actually have a really good draw.
- 2:04Did Alabama, I didn't look at who made it.
- 2:07Did Alabama end up making it?
- 2:09They did not.
- 2:11Yeah.
- 2:11I feel like SMU made it over Alabama.
- 2:16Alabama was the first one out.
- 2:17Miami was the second one out.
- 2:19Okay.
- 2:20Alabama had like three losses though.
- 2:21So not surprising.
- 2:23But I think like every sports show I was,
- 2:26I had to run some errands today.
- 2:27So I was listening on the
- 2:28radio and every sports shows,
- 2:30like this is the last year,
- 2:31the automatic bids for the
- 2:32conference winners.
- 2:33Okay.
- 2:34Or automatic buys buys
- 2:37because the fact that, um,
- 2:39they got buys in the first
- 2:40round when they're the
- 2:41ninth and eleventh ranked teams, just,
- 2:44just isn't fair.
- 2:46Yeah.
- 2:48Fair enough.
- 2:49Yeah.
- 2:49Especially with them
- 2:50expanding the playoffs.
- 2:51Like,
- 2:51I just don't think they need that
- 2:52anymore.
- 2:54Right, right.
- 2:55Yes, win the conference, you get in.
- 2:59But, you know,
- 3:02Clemson wasn't even supposed
- 3:05to be here and kind of went
- 3:07on a late run this season,
- 3:09beat SMU in the ACC
- 3:11championship to then get their spot.
- 3:15So, yeah.
- 3:18So excited about that.
- 3:19We have, what,
- 3:21the weekend before Christmas, right?
- 3:23Uh, we have playoff games Friday night,
- 3:27Saturday, all day.
- 3:29So that'd be fun.
- 3:32And then it goes for four
- 3:33weeks to crown the national champ.
- 3:39And if,
- 3:39and if the playoffs or anything
- 3:40like the conference
- 3:41championship games were,
- 3:42that was so much fun on Saturday,
- 3:46every game was close over time,
- 3:48driving to win last second field goal,
- 3:51like great games.
- 3:54I wish Colorado didn't lose
- 3:56a few weeks ago and then
- 3:57they ruined their chances.
- 3:59I'm a big coach prime fan.
- 4:02Yeah.
- 4:02I, I find myself rooting for him too.
- 4:06Um,
- 4:07but it's going to be cool when Travis
- 4:08Hunter wins that Heisman.
- 4:11Do you think he will?
- 4:14Yeah,
- 4:14I think he's the leader in the
- 4:15clubhouse for sure.
- 4:19Um,
- 4:22I want to ask Jamie this
- 4:24because before we get off
- 4:25the football stuff, Thursday night,
- 4:27her lions played the Packers.
- 4:29Yeah.
- 4:30Came down to,
- 4:32they could have kicked a field goal.
- 4:33Yeah.
- 4:34And given the ball back to
- 4:35the Packers with some time on the clock.
- 4:38Right.
- 4:39They chose to go for it on
- 4:41fourth down to end the game.
- 4:43Yeah.
- 4:44When they made that decision,
- 4:46what were your thoughts before they,
- 4:48before they snapped the ball?
- 4:49Well, I guess I was okay with that one.
- 4:51I was not okay with the earlier call.
- 4:53Like,
- 4:54I think we should have punted it and
- 4:55not gone for it when we
- 4:56gave it to them on their,
- 4:57on their thirty.
- 4:58Like, I didn't like that call.
- 4:59But, I mean, I say that, but, like,
- 5:03Campbell makes those calls.
- 5:05That is Campbell.
- 5:06And, like, that's why we're here,
- 5:07where we're at.
- 5:07So, we, I mean,
- 5:08we as fans need to just
- 5:10stop questioning him.
- 5:11Like, it is what it is.
- 5:12He's aggressive.
- 5:13He is,
- 5:14and the team reality is behind that.
- 5:15Like, so...
- 5:18you you are frustrated in
- 5:19the moment you're like why
- 5:20why but it's it seems to
- 5:22work out you know in one of
- 5:24these times it won't and
- 5:24people are gonna call for
- 5:25his head but like it's just
- 5:28that's a lot of trust in
- 5:29his players like he's
- 5:30basically saying take the
- 5:31ball you like I trust you
- 5:33you go and do your you know
- 5:35do you think it's an all or
- 5:36nothing year for them
- 5:37because they're going to
- 5:38lose both of their coordinators I know
- 5:42I mean, I do.
- 5:43I, I know that's it's sad.
- 5:45They're both going to become
- 5:46head coaches next year.
- 5:47Yeah.
- 5:48And is, is, do they,
- 5:49is it a all in year where they like,
- 5:52they've got to win it this year?
- 5:55I kind of think so.
- 5:56I mean, not only will you lose them,
- 5:59like you're probably going
- 6:01to lose some players too.
- 6:02I mean, we're,
- 6:03and we're dealing with
- 6:03injuries now that like,
- 6:05there's just always something that you.
- 6:07But some of the defensive
- 6:08players are coming back for the playoffs.
- 6:10Yeah.
- 6:10Yeah.
- 6:12That's a good thing.
- 6:13I thought San Francisco last year,
- 6:15that was their year they
- 6:18were needing to go all in.
- 6:19They're still looking good.
- 6:25No.
- 6:26They have to win the
- 6:27division or they're not getting in.
- 6:29Seattle's playing lights out.
- 6:32It's crazy.
- 6:33The NFL's crazy.
- 6:34The Eagles almost lost to
- 6:35the Panthers today.
- 6:37And that would have almost
- 6:38sewed it up for Detroit to
- 6:39get home for you.
- 6:40Yeah.
- 6:41The Bills lost by two.
- 6:43That game was insane.
- 6:45That game was insane.
- 6:47Forty-four to forty-two or something?
- 6:48Yeah.
- 6:51Every time you look,
- 6:51someone was breaking for a touchdown.
- 6:54I know.
- 6:57What did they say?
- 6:57It was the highest scoring game?
- 6:59I think so.
- 7:00Yeah.
- 7:01Well,
- 7:01and then the Penn State Oregon game
- 7:02was the highest Big Ten
- 7:03championship scoring game ever.
- 7:05Like, that was the same way.
- 7:08It's crazy.
- 7:09One more thing before we get
- 7:10into the CrossFit stuff,
- 7:11and that is last week,
- 7:13Carolyn mentioned Cobra Kai
- 7:14and finishing up all the
- 7:15available episodes,
- 7:17and I kind of slowed my
- 7:18roll with it because I felt
- 7:20like it was kind of jumping the shark.
- 7:22And then when I got to, like,
- 7:23I watched the very next episode,
- 7:25and it sucked me right back in.
- 7:28And then I binged the rest
- 7:29of them this week.
- 7:31Are you all done now too?
- 7:32I am.
- 7:34And there's only five more
- 7:35ever going to happen.
- 7:37And they start in January,
- 7:38I think maybe next year somewhere.
- 7:41But anyway, what a freaking cliffhanger.
- 7:49And I won't spoil it for anybody,
- 7:51but it was,
- 7:54When this started six years
- 7:56ago or whatever,
- 7:58it was like Karate Kid's
- 8:00always been kind of a kid's show, right?
- 8:02Like as a kid, I watched it.
- 8:03Yeah, I grew up watching it.
- 8:05Right.
- 8:05And when Cobra Kai first started,
- 8:07it was very much in that vein.
- 8:09It has an edge now that it
- 8:10never had in the past.
- 8:14I just love it.
- 8:17think it's great and I will
- 8:18say the kids have gotten so
- 8:20much better at the martial
- 8:21arts that the fight scenes
- 8:23are insane the jumps that
- 8:27they're making like
- 8:28literally jumping spinning
- 8:30and the athleticism of the
- 8:32kids because they've been
- 8:34working at this for six
- 8:35years yeah like they've
- 8:37gotten so much better so
- 8:42thank you for getting me
- 8:43pushed back into it now I'm
- 8:44ready for the last five
- 8:45I need Lex to catch back up.
- 8:47She kind of,
- 8:48I think she's like two or
- 8:49three seasons now behind.
- 8:51Oh man.
- 8:52Yeah.
- 8:52Well, and there,
- 8:54there's a scene in this one
- 8:56where one of the main
- 8:57characters suffers a loss and it,
- 9:01it shook me like it shook.
- 9:03Like I was crying watching that episode.
- 9:06It was that good.
- 9:10You should pull this up.
- 9:12Let's watch it.
- 9:16Well, we'll get dinged for that.
- 9:20But quick TV talk mention.
- 9:22One of Jamie and I's
- 9:23favorite shows is Reacher.
- 9:24New season trailer is out.
- 9:27It was in doubt because the
- 9:28production company went bankrupt,
- 9:31but they did get bought out
- 9:33and Reacher was retained.
- 9:35And so it is going to have a third season.
- 9:39I'll go watch that trailer after this.
- 9:43Yeah, it's a good show, too.
- 9:45Good show.
- 9:47And I'm still banging
- 9:48through Landman and Lioness together.
- 9:53Is Lioness good?
- 9:59It's Taylor Sheridan,
- 10:00so it's a guy who did
- 10:01Yellowstone and all that stuff,
- 10:03just like Landman.
- 10:04It's dark,
- 10:05but it is a very
- 10:06female-empowering... It is
- 10:08about a female...
- 10:13organization within the CIA.
- 10:14Okay.
- 10:16That they are trained for a
- 10:17specific thing.
- 10:20And,
- 10:22but and what they have to go through
- 10:23to get to that point,
- 10:25and to be trusted and to be
- 10:27all of that stuff.
- 10:27Okay.
- 10:29But, but it gets dark.
- 10:30I mean,
- 10:30it's about infiltrating
- 10:34organizations around the world.
- 10:36Yeah, it's, it's crazy.
- 10:41We started watching The Madness.
- 10:47So Julie and I saw it
- 10:48because it takes place in Pennsylvania,
- 10:49which is where we're from.
- 10:50Yeah, uh-huh.
- 10:51And so we looked at it and we're like,
- 10:52should we start this one?
- 10:55Start it.
- 10:56Was it good?
- 10:58We're like,
- 10:59I think we watched the first
- 10:59three episodes.
- 11:00So yeah, I mean, I'm super confused.
- 11:04So I don't know.
- 11:05It's either going to wind up
- 11:06awful or great.
- 11:08Well, what's crazy is in the trailer,
- 11:10the woods they're in in the
- 11:11trailer look just like my backyard.
- 11:14Yeah.
- 11:15Because my backyard goes
- 11:16like down a little slope
- 11:17and then it's woods behind
- 11:19where my parents, where I grew up.
- 11:21Those woods look identical
- 11:23to where I grew up.
- 11:25So they made it look really good.
- 11:30Yeah.
- 11:30Lynn says Zoe Zaldana in
- 11:32Lioness is amazing.
- 11:33I like her.
- 11:35Yeah.
- 11:38this is a good it's afghan
- 11:40women's stuff during the
- 11:41war oh okay season two does
- 11:43not take place though in
- 11:44the middle east and I don't
- 11:45know if kenneth has got to
- 11:46that point um it is more
- 11:49home it's taking place here
- 11:55gotcha so um so with that
- 11:58we can get into the crossfit stuff um
- 12:03We had the Dubai Fitness
- 12:06Championships in Dubai.
- 12:10How much...
- 12:12Lex says they're watching
- 12:13Madness too looks like I'm
- 12:15going to have to get on
- 12:15that boat when she says we
- 12:19she doesn't include me
- 12:20she's her and her parents
- 12:22are watching it it is
- 12:23confusing Lex like I said I
- 12:25feel like it's going to
- 12:26either be awesome like
- 12:28there's going to be some
- 12:29revelation something that
- 12:30makes sense and it's going
- 12:31to be good or it's going to
- 12:33be end up being like
- 12:34terrible but I mean I'm
- 12:35intrigued right now that's
- 12:38her excuse for not watching
- 12:39the last three seasons of Cobra Kai
- 12:44All right, so Dubai happened this weekend.
- 12:47I know someone of you put
- 12:52some comments into our rundown.
- 12:56So what I'll say is I tuned
- 12:59in to the first couple days
- 13:01to the coverage,
- 13:03and my belief is that Brian
- 13:06did the coverage on the
- 13:07first day and the first
- 13:09event of the second day
- 13:10because it was very
- 13:11one-camera-ish coverage.
- 13:13With them talking.
- 13:14Mm-hmm.
- 13:16What stunk about that,
- 13:18and I don't want to dog
- 13:20anybody for streaming
- 13:22because in years past,
- 13:24we never got day one.
- 13:25Right.
- 13:26Anything.
- 13:27And anything is better than nothing.
- 13:29And I think they did a
- 13:31Herculean effort to try.
- 13:33But when the event has
- 13:34thirty obstacle courses
- 13:36over a five K and you have one camera,
- 13:40you are at a severe disadvantage.
- 13:42Right.
- 13:44um what I what I find
- 13:48alarming is that some of
- 13:50these competitions do these
- 13:52events and that was really
- 13:53really cool but from a
- 13:55spectator point of view
- 13:57even if you're there live
- 13:58you get to see one or two
- 13:59obstacles right right and
- 14:02us viewing we were only
- 14:04getting to see one two
- 14:05maybe three obstacles as
- 14:07they were running up and down the track
- 14:11And I agree with Lex.
- 14:12I think it was,
- 14:15it would have been cool to see it all.
- 14:17And Patrick, I am not, literally,
- 14:18I'm not dogging you.
- 14:21He was one person, maybe two,
- 14:23and that was an immense field of play.
- 14:29The other thing is the bike
- 14:30event where they were,
- 14:32whatever they called it, FTP.
- 14:35The bikes were so close,
- 14:36they didn't have room to
- 14:38get in and show us the monitor.
- 14:41I think that would have
- 14:42changed that just a little bit.
- 14:43But the setup is the setup,
- 14:45and they're doing what they
- 14:46can with what they have.
- 14:47Like Lucy was walking around
- 14:49and kind of saying people's
- 14:51paces and who was in the lead.
- 14:52She did a really good job
- 14:54adding to the broadcast team,
- 14:57like the commentary stuff.
- 14:59I agree.
- 14:59She had a lot of great
- 15:00insight from her perspective,
- 15:03and she knows the athletes
- 15:04very well and just what was possible.
- 15:06I thought – I really enjoyed –
- 15:10Um, her speaking with Brian,
- 15:11like Brian knows the
- 15:12athletes like so well,
- 15:13but like having another
- 15:15athlete there that added,
- 15:17I thought a lot of, um,
- 15:19value to the commentary.
- 15:21Yeah.
- 15:21I, uh, I liked it.
- 15:24I think she's, I was in, like,
- 15:28I was watching it from bed live.
- 15:30Right.
- 15:31I wasn't sleeping well this weekend.
- 15:33So I'm watching it live.
- 15:34I'm, I'm half groggy.
- 15:37If I couldn't see the
- 15:37person's name on the back of their shirt,
- 15:40I wasn't correlating what
- 15:41she was saying with who it
- 15:43was that she was saying it about.
- 15:46And if they had long hair,
- 15:47I didn't see their name at all.
- 15:48Yeah.
- 15:49Right.
- 15:49Like, so I think that was just tough, but,
- 15:52but I applaud them for
- 15:53trying because we never get
- 15:55day one from Dubai ever.
- 15:56Right.
- 15:57So we did get, and my gosh,
- 15:59the view from where they
- 16:00were biking was so crazy.
- 16:05I don't like, I don't,
- 16:06I didn't like that event in
- 16:07terms of like the programming.
- 16:08I don't like that they
- 16:09forced them to go on damper tan.
- 16:10I don't think that's like,
- 16:13I feel like people should
- 16:14be able to pick the damper
- 16:15that they go on.
- 16:16I don't,
- 16:17I don't see that needing to go on
- 16:18a damper tan.
- 16:20Yeah.
- 16:21And then you had the,
- 16:22the five K obstacle on,
- 16:23you had the one K that you
- 16:24couldn't really see.
- 16:25So like,
- 16:25there was like three events kind
- 16:27of like to begin that you
- 16:28just couldn't really see
- 16:29much as a spectator.
- 16:30And I was like, oh, so,
- 16:32but then towards the back
- 16:33end of the weekend, I got more,
- 16:36more into the events as you,
- 16:38as they were in the tennis stadium.
- 16:40Yeah.
- 16:43I, my last thing on the, on the,
- 16:44on the viewing,
- 16:45it was when they were in
- 16:47the tennis stadium,
- 16:49I love that they were
- 16:50getting more whole floor
- 16:52shots where you could see the race.
- 16:56But the names, identifying who is who,
- 16:59because some of the first heats,
- 17:01I just don't know the
- 17:01athletes well enough from Europe.
- 17:03to be able to identify them.
- 17:05And, and maybe that's on me,
- 17:07but even if I'm trying to
- 17:08get to know them,
- 17:09I don't know who they are to know them.
- 17:11Um, I wish there was,
- 17:13and I've said this over and over again,
- 17:14I wish that like the Reebok uniforms,
- 17:17once you found out what
- 17:18colors your person was wearing,
- 17:20you could pick them out pretty quick.
- 17:22When,
- 17:23now that we're doing like the same
- 17:24color across the board,
- 17:26it makes it really
- 17:27difficult to find the P your people.
- 17:30Like when I competed at
- 17:31Dubai in like twenty eighteen,
- 17:32we didn't get a lot of
- 17:33uniforms like so you're
- 17:34wearing the same colors the whole time.
- 17:36So I feel like it was the
- 17:37same like similar here,
- 17:39whereas they don't have
- 17:40many options for colors.
- 17:41So they're often wearing the
- 17:42same thing all day and then
- 17:44switching the next day.
- 17:45Yeah, it was what like black and blue.
- 17:47Basically, yeah, there's a lighter blue,
- 17:49I think I saw you too.
- 17:50Yeah.
- 17:50Yeah.
- 17:52Vi said, when that guy got on Brian's show,
- 17:55had Toby on the podium, I was like, yeah,
- 17:58okay, move along.
- 17:58My guy, I ate my words.
- 18:03And I didn't get to see that.
- 18:04So I need to go back because
- 18:05I've heard that Toby was awesome.
- 18:08Oh, he was incredible.
- 18:15Yeah.
- 18:15Lex says,
- 18:16the event programming was overkill.
- 18:18And that's been said about Dubai a lot.
- 18:20yeah in their past uh lucy
- 18:29is charming and genuine
- 18:30love her commentary
- 18:32couldn't agree more yeah
- 18:33she did a good job
- 18:38Um,
- 18:38Patrick Clark below backstage info
- 18:41every year,
- 18:41Brian has to deal with a new
- 18:42broadcasting and production team at TFC.
- 18:45So he has to train them as
- 18:46much as possible,
- 18:48as much as you possibly can on CrossFit.
- 18:50And there's a language barrier.
- 18:54Yeah.
- 18:54That's gotta be tough.
- 18:56Yeah.
- 18:56You could see, I feel like,
- 18:57I don't know if Brian's in control.
- 18:59Maybe Patrick knows us.
- 19:00I mean,
- 19:00you can see it in the lifting event.
- 19:03it's almost like either
- 19:04Brian was queuing which
- 19:05camera he want or where he wanted it.
- 19:06Cause he would just,
- 19:07he would like say like,
- 19:08let's try to get this camera on Laura.
- 19:11Like we miss Laura Clifton
- 19:13lift that first one.
- 19:14Let's try to make sure we see this one.
- 19:16It would be panned down and they're like,
- 19:17Oh, hold on.
- 19:18And so I don't know if Brian's doing that,
- 19:20which I mean,
- 19:20helps for helps if they're
- 19:22in that discussion.
- 19:23And then he's talking about
- 19:25what he's telling them to show,
- 19:27which is sometimes a problem.
- 19:28You, you know,
- 19:29that that doesn't happen with like,
- 19:32Sean and Tommy and the, you know,
- 19:33like they'd be,
- 19:34they'd be talking about
- 19:35what we're not even looking at sometimes.
- 19:37And you're like, uh, yeah.
- 19:43Uh, he responds.
- 19:43Yup.
- 19:43That hadn't happened in the past.
- 19:46Yeah.
- 19:47Yeah.
- 19:47I know like a good sports broadcast.
- 19:50the director is in there's a
- 19:52communication between the
- 19:53director and the announcers
- 19:55to make sure that the
- 19:56cameras move to where it
- 19:57totally needs to happen
- 19:58especially if brian is
- 19:59there to try to like
- 20:00commentate the event and
- 20:01speak on an athlete or
- 20:02speak on a race on the
- 20:02floor like you need they
- 20:04need to be in communication
- 20:05be like hit hit this like
- 20:07we need to be on lane two
- 20:08and three um yeah so
- 20:14overall I don't how much
- 20:16did you guys get to watch of dubai
- 20:19I watched a decent amount.
- 20:20I think I watched all of
- 20:20today and most of yesterday.
- 20:22I had to go back and
- 20:23re-watch a little bit.
- 20:25I didn't see the FTP.
- 20:26Other than that,
- 20:28I think I got almost everything.
- 20:31I watched most of it.
- 20:32I'd fast forward a little
- 20:33bit if I knew they were on
- 20:34a machine because I wasn't
- 20:35watching it live.
- 20:38I was just watching in
- 20:40general most of it though.
- 20:42Any highlights for you on the weekend?
- 20:46Kristen Hold is still a beast.
- 20:48Like, she was, like, on the podium until,
- 20:50like, basically the last couple events.
- 20:54She's, like, thirty-eight,
- 20:56thirty-nine years old.
- 20:58She has all of her, like,
- 20:59a bunch of her athletes
- 21:00there from her programming.
- 21:03I think that was cool that
- 21:05she's hanging in there with
- 21:07them still and obviously
- 21:09can beat many of them.
- 21:11Jamie Green was impressive.
- 21:13Freyova, I mean,
- 21:15we kind of expected her to.
- 21:17Um, either winner on the podium,
- 21:19but happy for Jamie green.
- 21:21Um, Solberg had a really good last day,
- 21:24which she did last year too.
- 21:26Um, she looked very determined.
- 21:28Yeah.
- 21:30Yeah.
- 21:32On Sunday, right?
- 21:33Like, yeah, she crushed Sunday.
- 21:37On the men's side,
- 21:39there wasn't as many top athletes,
- 21:40honestly.
- 21:42It wasn't as much of a race.
- 21:43Luka ran away with it.
- 21:47Once more, with Drew,
- 21:52the race just wasn't there as much.
- 21:54It just wasn't as deep on
- 21:55the men's side to me.
- 21:56I was more invested on the women's side.
- 22:02My highlight was probably
- 22:03Tola in the last event.
- 22:04Holy cow.
- 22:07It was incredible.
- 22:10One of my highlights was Tola's comeback.
- 22:12Yeah.
- 22:13He kind of pulled like an Andrea.
- 22:15I mean, they both had a similar final day.
- 22:20I was happy for Luca winning.
- 22:21I thought that was cool.
- 22:24I am a huge Mathilde Garnes fan.
- 22:29We've become friends over
- 22:30the years and she is just
- 22:31one of the nicest people ever.
- 22:32Anytime she succeeds, it warms my heart.
- 22:36Did she wind up in second?
- 22:39Third.
- 22:39I think Jamie got second.
- 22:41We have the leaderboard.
- 22:43I can pull it up.
- 22:44Oh, you have it?
- 22:44I couldn't find it all weekend.
- 22:46I have it ready.
- 22:47It's just on Competition Corner.
- 22:48Competition Corner is one of
- 22:50the worst apps ever to look on.
- 22:52Yeah, maybe that was the issue.
- 22:53I couldn't find it.
- 22:55Now after doing it for a few years,
- 22:56like I can figure it out, but oh my gosh.
- 23:00So on the men's side, we had Luka Jukic,
- 23:03Toby Buckland, Bronislaw Linkiewicz,
- 23:07Michael Weslowski, Tolo Morakunio,
- 23:10Spencer Panczak, Luis Silar,
- 23:14Callum Clements, Jake Douglas,
- 23:16and Georges Kervis.
- 23:17We'll just do the top ten.
- 23:18And only the top six made more money,
- 23:22and then after that,
- 23:22everyone gets paid the same.
- 23:26Yep.
- 23:26Just a side note.
- 23:28Okay.
- 23:31Good showing for Spencer.
- 23:33Yeah.
- 23:33We're focusing on tactical games.
- 23:35And I think that might be
- 23:37his best finish at Dubai.
- 23:39I think good showing for
- 23:40Bronislaw getting on the podium.
- 23:43For an old man.
- 23:47Maybe that aerodynamic
- 23:49haircut that he told me
- 23:50about at the Masters games
- 23:53is now paying off.
- 23:57So that is the leaderboard
- 23:59on the men's side.
- 24:01On the women's side, I'll blow this up.
- 24:05We have Karen Freyova, Jamie Simmons,
- 24:08Mathilde Garnes, Andrea Solberg,
- 24:11Kristen Holta.
- 24:13Why does that keep opening up?
- 24:19Okay.
- 24:20Andrea Solberg, Kristen Holta,
- 24:22Andra Moistus, Oda...
- 24:28Yeah, sure.
- 24:30Nicole here, Elisa Fuliano, Hannah Black.
- 24:34Oh, Oda, I had never heard of before,
- 24:36and she caught my eye.
- 24:38Yeah.
- 24:38Another one, I think, of Kirsten.
- 24:45Yeah.
- 24:45Athletes.
- 24:48Hannah Black did well.
- 24:51Hannah did do well.
- 24:51Yeah.
- 24:52Like,
- 24:55She looked,
- 24:55she looked good on the E-mom
- 24:59one that I saw.
- 25:00I don't remember where she
- 25:01actually finished,
- 25:01but like she was holding her own.
- 25:03She's, you know,
- 25:04stronger athlete and that
- 25:05one seemed to be rowing capacity.
- 25:07So I guess that one doesn't surprise me,
- 25:10but like soul bear crushed it.
- 25:14And she's not one of your bigger athletes.
- 25:17Uh, fourth year row,
- 25:18a Criker athlete has
- 25:19finished second and they
- 25:20need to do better.
- 25:21Who wait, Jamie got second.
- 25:25uh jamie yeah jamie did I
- 25:31get second yes yeah she's
- 25:32yes but but some people is
- 25:35she crager though I don't
- 25:37know no I don't think so
- 25:38okay I almost feel like
- 25:42elliot programs for her I
- 25:44don't yeah yeah uh hannah
- 25:46hardy is being asked about
- 25:49um she finished ninth
- 25:53Brittany Weiss just missed the cut.
- 25:55I know.
- 25:58That was a bummer.
- 26:01It was just heavy.
- 26:03Lynn said TTT with Toby, Linda,
- 26:05and Anika did amazing this year.
- 26:08Anika had a really good
- 26:09event with that chest of bar and a squat.
- 26:11Yes.
- 26:12I mean, that's right up her alley.
- 26:15Yeah.
- 26:17Um,
- 26:19All right.
- 26:20Any lowlights from the Dubai
- 26:23Fitness Championships?
- 26:29No.
- 26:29I mean,
- 26:30I think I thought Anika would
- 26:31finish higher than she did.
- 26:34I mean, low lights,
- 26:37I would say the fans don't not showing up,
- 26:40but that's not really,
- 26:41really a low light.
- 26:42It's the same thing every year.
- 26:43I mean,
- 26:44there was more people like years ago,
- 26:45but it's just, it's just empty.
- 26:48So I guess that's my,
- 26:49my low light for that
- 26:52competition is had that
- 26:54like stadium been filled,
- 26:56it just creates a different
- 26:57atmosphere for the athletes.
- 27:01It's just too bad that it's not.
- 27:03It's empty every year.
- 27:04Yeah.
- 27:05It's really interesting to
- 27:07hear some athletes say that like,
- 27:09this is their favorite event.
- 27:11This is the one they look forward to.
- 27:12It's so exciting.
- 27:13And then,
- 27:14and then you get other comments
- 27:16that are completely opposite.
- 27:19So I'm going to,
- 27:19as to one of those comments,
- 27:21that's completely opposite.
- 27:22Thank you for the segue,
- 27:22but I'm going to give you
- 27:24my low light really quick.
- 27:25My low light is an EMOM
- 27:27should never be in competition.
- 27:29That was just dumb to watch.
- 27:34that that was gross to watch
- 27:36like they like people died
- 27:39on that emom yes um I know
- 27:41but I think annika wrote on
- 27:42her thing like that was
- 27:43like one of the hardest
- 27:43because of the heat as well
- 27:46um at that time of the day
- 27:48but yeah it's more just
- 27:50like getting you tired
- 27:51until you go for those two
- 27:52rounds the problem is the
- 27:54dictator's tired now too
- 27:55because it's really boring
- 27:56to watch yeah I mean a
- 27:58death by would have been
- 27:58better where you just kind
- 27:59of add a rep every round until you can't
- 28:03um can't make it yeah yeah
- 28:07so right before we went on
- 28:09air um I I've been a little
- 28:11occupied this weekend with
- 28:12some stuff so I got some
- 28:14notes right before we went
- 28:15on air and one of those is
- 28:16from lex that sam dancer
- 28:18actually made a comment
- 28:19about dubai uh responding
- 28:22to one of hiller's videos
- 28:25And so his comment was, yo,
- 28:28that comp and place is wild.
- 28:30The most poorly judged event
- 28:32I've ever done.
- 28:33Dubai is like a really hot
- 28:35chick that is super rich
- 28:36and has absolutely no heart
- 28:38or personality.
- 28:46Yeah.
- 28:47Judging was questionable at times, man,
- 28:51that final, you didn't watch the final.
- 28:52Did you Scott?
- 28:54um did I watch it yes did I
- 28:58watch it with a lot of
- 28:59intent no so they were like
- 29:01it was supposed to be this
- 29:02like second dotted line is
- 29:03where they're supposed to
- 29:04finish their overhead
- 29:05walking lunge and some
- 29:07people had to keep lunging
- 29:08all the way to the fine the
- 29:10like time box line and some
- 29:13people stepped on the line
- 29:15and got what waved through
- 29:16like it would that for
- 29:18being the final that was frustrating
- 29:20brian at one point was like
- 29:21this person didn't even
- 29:22finish their lunch and he's
- 29:24like yeah he was not happy
- 29:26with that finish but it was
- 29:29just like he was just
- 29:30giving his opinion right
- 29:31there like oh that was not
- 29:32a wrap that's actually not
- 29:34a bench she's lucky yeah I
- 29:36actually like appreciate
- 29:38that I I appreciate brian
- 29:39speaking up I don't know if
- 29:40other people do I'm sure
- 29:42the athletes don't love it but like man i
- 29:44Should be called out.
- 29:46And the handstand in another
- 29:48workout had a standard that
- 29:49was different.
- 29:50Yeah,
- 29:51you could just put your hand on the line.
- 29:52It makes it clear.
- 29:54Honestly, I get the point of it.
- 29:59It's just different than
- 30:00what we're used to.
- 30:01It happens in every sport.
- 30:03I'm watching Penn State
- 30:04Oregon the other night.
- 30:05The announcers are saying
- 30:06that the refs are missing it.
- 30:08They're blowing it.
- 30:09And the announcers keep
- 30:10saying it over and over again.
- 30:12It makes it hard to watch.
- 30:14But I will say this for the, again,
- 30:17I hate repeating myself,
- 30:18but I came up through
- 30:19judging before I started
- 30:21doing this media stuff.
- 30:23Usually when I watch a competition,
- 30:24I see my friends in Dubai.
- 30:28I see none of my friends.
- 30:32So that,
- 30:33that group who is judging there
- 30:36and my experience are like
- 30:38very under experienced judges.
- 30:41Yeah.
- 30:43actually came up the same
- 30:44time patrick did judging so
- 30:46maybe he has a different
- 30:47view of it but when I'm
- 30:49watching the stream I do
- 30:50not see any of my friends
- 30:51there lynn he's at sam has
- 30:55actually competed there
- 30:55three times when I competed
- 30:58there in I had a good
- 31:00experience like I mean
- 31:01physically it was difficult um
- 31:05especially my desert run.
- 31:06But, um, like I,
- 31:09I enjoyed the competition
- 31:10when I was there and maybe
- 31:11I was there during one of
- 31:12their better years.
- 31:16Um, well,
- 31:20the only thing that I remember
- 31:22not liking was that a lot of the,
- 31:24The tiebreakers,
- 31:25they never had any good way
- 31:28to... So some people had
- 31:29like... Twenty people had
- 31:30the same score at some points.
- 31:32That was the only thing.
- 31:33I remember seeing a couple years,
- 31:35they still had problems
- 31:36with their tiebreakers and scores.
- 31:38But this year,
- 31:39they didn't have much of that.
- 31:41It was mostly just fans and
- 31:43maybe a few bad calls.
- 31:47I mean, lots of bad calls for the judging.
- 31:50He does go on a little bit further.
- 31:52I'll read that.
- 31:54In another response, he says,
- 31:58that was a very generous
- 31:59way of me putting it, and quite frankly,
- 32:02I could go on and on about
- 32:03the place and the comp.
- 32:05From bribery on multiple
- 32:07occasions to witnessing
- 32:08what may have been slavery,
- 32:13I'm not saying there aren't
- 32:14good people there.
- 32:15I've met some lovely people there,
- 32:17including great judges nonetheless.
- 32:19That comp was a mess every year I've been.
- 32:22Sexy, but a mess.
- 32:28Well, we thank you for your opinion, Sam.
- 32:33Yeah.
- 32:33I can't respond to it
- 32:34specifically because I've never been.
- 32:36Yeah, me neither.
- 32:37Carolyn has been.
- 32:37She's the only one that can,
- 32:39and she had a good
- 32:40experience when she was there.
- 32:42Like it was, I mean, it wasn't bad.
- 32:44Like I enjoyed it,
- 32:45but it was one of like my
- 32:46first major competitions
- 32:48and like internet,
- 32:49like it was my first
- 32:50international competitions.
- 32:51Like I was,
- 32:53I guess trying to enjoy the
- 32:55experience in a different
- 32:56way than maybe some people
- 32:58were competing there.
- 33:00Do they pay for the athletes to get there?
- 33:02So back then you did an
- 33:03online qualifier and where you finished,
- 33:07when you got there,
- 33:07you received a little bit of money.
- 33:09Like they gave you like an
- 33:10envelope at check-in for
- 33:13like the top three or
- 33:14something of the placing.
- 33:15So I think I had finished within that.
- 33:16So I had a small little bit.
- 33:18And then the amount that you got was...
- 33:22at the end of the competition,
- 33:24whatever you finished.
- 33:26Okay.
- 33:28I just remember like being
- 33:29in the finale at one point.
- 33:30They're like,
- 33:30this workout's not worth
- 33:32three thousand dollars now.
- 33:33It's now worth thirty thousand dollars.
- 33:35And I was like, what is going on?
- 33:37They're just throwing money away.
- 33:38They're like, and then everyone's like,
- 33:41oh shit, let's do this workout.
- 33:45But like they had,
- 33:45they were throwing like way
- 33:47more money back then.
- 33:48Like what was the prize in,
- 33:50like what was the prize this year?
- 33:52I don't even know.
- 33:54I didn't even see what the, I know.
- 33:55Nineteen was a crazy year
- 33:56where they put the a
- 33:57hundred grand out on acid bath.
- 33:58Right.
- 33:59That's the year I was there.
- 34:00Acid bath.
- 34:01Oh, okay.
- 34:03I think it was like,
- 34:04thirty thousand was one number one.
- 34:07Maybe, maybe that's high.
- 34:08I don't know.
- 34:09Oh, fifty K. Okay.
- 34:11Then maybe it was fifty, thirty.
- 34:13I don't know.
- 34:18Yeah.
- 34:22I'll say,
- 34:22I'll say one thing is in my desert run,
- 34:26like I had heat stroke for
- 34:28the first time in my career.
- 34:30I've had it many times since then.
- 34:33And I just remember taking
- 34:35off my weight vest and
- 34:37cause you took it off
- 34:38halfway and you're in the desert,
- 34:40like in the sand dunes and
- 34:42there was no one there.
- 34:44No one there.
- 34:45And I just remembered,
- 34:46if I pass out right now,
- 34:48I'm dying in the desert.
- 34:49There's no one here to save me.
- 34:51So I was like, make it to the finish line.
- 34:53Make it to the finish line.
- 34:54There will be help there.
- 34:56Help is there.
- 34:57And I just walked and
- 34:58stumbled and stumbled.
- 35:00And I got to the finish line.
- 35:01There was no ice.
- 35:02They treated me in a tent, which was like,
- 35:04ten degrees, fifteen degrees,
- 35:06even hotter.
- 35:06And I was like, get me out of here.
- 35:11But then they took me to...
- 35:13a hospital for like IV and stuff.
- 35:16But I just remember like
- 35:17there was no help there.
- 35:18They had no ice, no.
- 35:20So I guess that part was not very good.
- 35:24And that desert run took out
- 35:25people like that took out Laura, right?
- 35:28If I remember right.
- 35:33It was her lower back,
- 35:35I think at that point.
- 35:36Okay.
- 35:38I think she was dealing with a lower back,
- 35:39maybe.
- 35:41I remember her sitting like
- 35:43on I guess what was the
- 35:45running course at the very end,
- 35:46like after the finish,
- 35:48just kind of sitting there.
- 35:50And then she withdrew shortly thereafter.
- 35:53So I may be like connecting
- 35:54dots with and missing a few
- 35:55along the way.
- 35:56I think,
- 35:57I think it was a back if I remember,
- 35:59but that was the only bad.
- 36:01I mean, it could have been very, very bad.
- 36:04Yeah.
- 36:05That was, I mean,
- 36:06when they brought that up, it was,
- 36:08that was,
- 36:09everybody was saying how crazy that was.
- 36:12I run through the desert, but,
- 36:19That was Dubai.
- 36:21Then we had fit fest this weekend as well,
- 36:24which Patrick knows all too
- 36:25well because he was
- 36:26streaming it live on the be
- 36:29friendly channel.
- 36:30So if you want to go see any
- 36:31of the elements there, and I think,
- 36:35I think my first,
- 36:37my first take on this is if
- 36:39you're viewing this as a competition,
- 36:40you're viewing it wrong.
- 36:43It is truly like a community event.
- 36:46A showcase.
- 36:48Right.
- 36:48And to get to meet the fans,
- 36:50to get to – like when you
- 36:54saw them do the activations with the fans,
- 36:57like Ariel – and you saw
- 36:58this on their Instagram channels,
- 37:00like them teaching someone
- 37:01how to do handstand walks or them.
- 37:03Like I thought that was awesome.
- 37:06Yeah,
- 37:06I didn't realize that they had those
- 37:08tasks to do while they're there.
- 37:10So I guess it makes sense
- 37:11why they're like paying
- 37:13them to go there like
- 37:13showcase and then I'm sure
- 37:16people pay a big fee to get coached by X,
- 37:19Y and Z. Yeah, I was I don't know.
- 37:23I was confused watching it.
- 37:24I think I watched the run and then.
- 37:29And then I watched their one
- 37:31where they did the synchro bar muscle up,
- 37:34ring muscle up into snatching.
- 37:38Yes.
- 37:40I don't know.
- 37:40What made it difficult is
- 37:41they were so spread out on the floor,
- 37:43which doesn't help Patrick.
- 37:44Who's like a one man team,
- 37:46like trying to get both
- 37:47teams and he's having to go
- 37:49from one side of the rig.
- 37:50And then they're even moving
- 37:51down the rig towards the middle.
- 37:53And then he's having like, it's so, I mean,
- 37:56sorry, Patrick, but,
- 37:58Like that's just so hard for
- 37:59him to keep up with the race.
- 38:01And then us as fans,
- 38:02it's hard to follow because
- 38:03you can't see what the
- 38:05other team is doing.
- 38:06Like you're stuck watching
- 38:08one team at a time.
- 38:10And it's not really his fault.
- 38:11It's just the way that they
- 38:12were set up on the floor
- 38:16made it hard to see the race sometimes.
- 38:18Yeah.
- 38:19Yeah.
- 38:21So I agree with everything you're saying,
- 38:23right?
- 38:24It was confusing, but that's when I had to,
- 38:26in my mind,
- 38:27say this is not a competition.
- 38:28Yeah,
- 38:29I guess I wasn't thinking that at the
- 38:33time, but yeah.
- 38:33Yes,
- 38:33these two entities are fighting
- 38:35against each other for points,
- 38:37but there's no like big
- 38:40prize at the end or it's not.
- 38:42It's really just so
- 38:43everybody has fun watching
- 38:45their favorite athlete go
- 38:46out and do maybe some
- 38:47things they've never seen them do before.
- 38:50And it was nice that it
- 38:51wasn't a lopsided win.
- 38:52It was three-three after
- 38:54last night or whatever it was.
- 38:57So it's not like one team
- 38:59was winning six-one and
- 39:02it's not even enjoyable to
- 39:05still want to see a little
- 39:07battle between the rest of
- 39:09the world and Europe.
- 39:14Lex is right.
- 39:17It felt like a chaotic
- 39:18cousin to what a Palooza team.
- 39:20Yeah.
- 39:21But I think,
- 39:22and I think even the athletes
- 39:23said this themselves,
- 39:24what it was meant more to them than this.
- 39:27This was really just an exhibition.
- 39:30Hmm.
- 39:33And,
- 39:34and so here's a couple of my
- 39:35highlights and I don't want
- 39:36to just bash it.
- 39:37Cause I think one, it was crowded.
- 39:40So people came to watch and
- 39:42that's a good thing.
- 39:42Yeah.
- 39:42That was good.
- 39:44Right.
- 39:45Two,
- 39:47The one event that I really
- 39:49enjoyed watching, and again,
- 39:50I wish I could have seen all the elements,
- 39:53but Patrick is one man with one camera,
- 39:56and that is the American
- 39:57Ninja Warrior or the Ninja
- 39:59Warrior course because it's
- 40:01showing CrossFit in a way
- 40:04that is adaptive.
- 40:06And it adds the element that
- 40:09Carolyn loves and that's athleticism,
- 40:11right?
- 40:12And these people get to see
- 40:13that these people that
- 40:14train CrossFit can adapt to
- 40:16these other things
- 40:18relatively quickly with
- 40:19their athleticism.
- 40:20Like you look at a Jason
- 40:22Hopper who is an athlete
- 40:23first and then jumped into CrossFit.
- 40:26He went through that
- 40:26obstacle course super quick.
- 40:30Right.
- 40:31And so it lets you... We
- 40:32watch these people on
- 40:33American Ninja Warrior
- 40:34every year and get sucked
- 40:36into their stories and all of that stuff.
- 40:38And to see that a
- 40:38CrossFitter can jump in and
- 40:40do it... And there were
- 40:41very minimal bobbles.
- 40:43I think it was a very
- 40:44low-skill obstacle course, though.
- 40:46Nothing like Ninja Warrior.
- 40:48It was more... It reminded
- 40:49me a lot more of my Tough
- 40:51Mudder mile that I had to
- 40:54do where there was just
- 40:55some small little obstacle stuff.
- 40:56It was...
- 40:59like it was, it was low skill obstacles.
- 41:00Like the one beam was like super short.
- 41:02Of course.
- 41:04And it wasn't spinning and it, nothing was,
- 41:07nothing was very technical.
- 41:08Like I was even surprised
- 41:09that some athletes missed
- 41:11any of those obstacles.
- 41:13Like it was very basic.
- 41:16Yeah.
- 41:17But I,
- 41:18I thought it was a cool concept and
- 41:19it was fun to, I liked it.
- 41:20It was fun.
- 41:21As you saw the, the lead changes and, and,
- 41:24and who was really good at it.
- 41:25And,
- 41:26And who struggled a little
- 41:28like Colton falling off the
- 41:29beam seven times,
- 41:31even though he only had to
- 41:32fall off twice and then continue on.
- 41:34He tried it a couple more
- 41:35times and kept falling.
- 41:36So.
- 41:39So Lynn says here,
- 41:41I'm thinking maybe fit fest
- 41:43is dumbly down on being
- 41:44more of an in-person
- 41:45showcase of all functional fitness,
- 41:48like a mini Arnold type of thing.
- 41:50And Patrick's follows up
- 41:51saying one hundred percent.
- 41:52That's why we couldn't
- 41:53announce we were streaming
- 41:55till the day of.
- 41:57So and I guess I was
- 41:57confused on this last year, too,
- 41:59because I tried to follow.
- 42:00And it seemed like like,
- 42:01is this is it a big festival?
- 42:04Is there other CrossFit
- 42:06events like Gen Pop?
- 42:09I wonder.
- 42:09It's called like the Arnold
- 42:12has tons of different fitness things.
- 42:14I wonder.
- 42:14Right, right.
- 42:16Like, they have Taekwondo,
- 42:17and they have Judo,
- 42:18and they have Strongman,
- 42:20and... So they had
- 42:23Strongman going on at this?
- 42:25I don't know.
- 42:25I'm asking Patrick.
- 42:26Oh, yeah.
- 42:27I mean... Thanks, Ken.
- 42:33Yeah, that's... Like,
- 42:34I feel like it should...
- 42:36They should... FitFest
- 42:37should stream all of the
- 42:39aspects of what they're
- 42:40doing and showcase some of this stuff.
- 42:42I mean, I guess Arnold isn't streamed,
- 42:43so I can see...
- 42:46So Arnold is streamed.
- 42:49It is.
- 42:50But the complication, so some of it is,
- 42:53you have to remember all
- 42:54these different fitness
- 42:55things have different
- 42:57governing bodies or different...
- 43:01You know what I mean?
- 43:02And they have their own
- 43:03rules about what can be
- 43:05streamed and what can't be streamed.
- 43:06So like Strongman is streamed from there,
- 43:08of course, right?
- 43:10Because it has its own thing
- 43:12and they publicize it and
- 43:13they put it out there.
- 43:15The bodybuilding for sure gets streamed,
- 43:18but it's on its own channel
- 43:20doing its own thing.
- 43:21So each little aspect is
- 43:23signed off for their streaming thing.
- 43:26Interesting.
- 43:28So was there any, was there just general,
- 43:31could like an intermediate
- 43:32sign up for fit fest for a
- 43:34CrossFit competition?
- 43:36Or was it only those like
- 43:39athletes that the big name
- 43:41athletes that came in and
- 43:42just did an exhibition?
- 43:43Was there any other CrossFit there?
- 43:49They had ATHX, UK Weightlifting Meet,
- 43:53UK Rowing Championships,
- 43:55the Indoor Obstacle Course League,
- 43:57and a bunch of activations.
- 44:00I saw they were doing the rowing.
- 44:02Didn't Kyle do it?
- 44:04He did.
- 44:05How'd he do?
- 44:07Emily said that he PR'd his
- 44:09two K by like six to eight
- 44:11seconds or something like that.
- 44:11Dang.
- 44:13Which any PR on a two K is a PR.
- 44:16That's a tough thing to do.
- 44:18Gosh, it's awful.
- 44:21what's worse a one K or two
- 44:22K two K yeah um and then
- 44:29also strength and depth was
- 44:30hosting a regular
- 44:31competition okay so
- 44:32strength and depth was at
- 44:34fitbest running their
- 44:35competition running a
- 44:38competition not the normal
- 44:40strength and depth right oh
- 44:43a lot of options for people
- 44:46yeah I think it's a cool idea
- 44:50do think that they need to
- 44:51find a way to broadcast it
- 44:53though yeah and just make
- 44:55it easier on like even if
- 44:59it's just one camera make
- 45:00it make the teams like next
- 45:01to each other so we can see
- 45:03the race much better so
- 45:07here's my my take from this thing
- 45:11It was hugely popular.
- 45:13If you go to the Arnold,
- 45:14as Patrick's describing it,
- 45:16just like they're shoulder to shoulder,
- 45:18you cannot move at the Arnold, right?
- 45:21There was a time when
- 45:23CrossFit athletes would
- 45:24move around the country or
- 45:26go to different events
- 45:27around the country and be
- 45:29available to fans to take
- 45:33selfies or to do activations or to do...
- 45:37It feels like that has been
- 45:40narrowed down to where it
- 45:41only happens at the games,
- 45:43and it's only athletes who
- 45:44didn't make it to the games.
- 45:47where I remember when Rich
- 45:48and Annie won the games the same year,
- 45:52they did like a little mini
- 45:53tour around the country
- 45:55where they were speaking to people,
- 45:57meeting with people,
- 45:58doing stuff like that.
- 46:00And I think we've gotten away from that.
- 46:01And it may be one of the
- 46:04pieces where we're losing a
- 46:06connection between the
- 46:07community or the spectators
- 46:10and the athletes.
- 46:15Any thoughts on that?
- 46:16Because I thought this
- 46:17looked hugely successful,
- 46:19and it was a way to do it
- 46:20in a mass group where the
- 46:21athletes got to hang out together,
- 46:23they got to have fun together,
- 46:24but they also got to make
- 46:26that connection with the community.
- 46:30And they got their way paid.
- 46:34Yeah.
- 46:35I don't know.
- 46:35I feel like we've lost the...
- 46:38affiliate model and or these
- 46:41athletes being affiliate
- 46:42owners and feeling
- 46:44affiliate with being an
- 46:46affiliate owner but I feel
- 46:47like that's why rich was
- 46:49the way he was is because
- 46:50he understands that that
- 46:52connection is what I mean
- 46:57it's going to help him in
- 46:58the long run so he's going like
- 47:02These people just see the
- 47:03sport as the sport and that's it.
- 47:05And they, they,
- 47:06there's nothing like that's okay too.
- 47:08I think, I don't know.
- 47:11I love the affiliate.
- 47:12I love hanging out the affiliate.
- 47:13I love the people at the affiliate.
- 47:15I love all that.
- 47:16I don't want it to go away,
- 47:17but there's just as much
- 47:19for someone wanting to, um,
- 47:22that's not a part of an
- 47:24affiliate that wants to
- 47:26like increase their own popularity,
- 47:28their own brand, their own.
- 47:31So just because they're not
- 47:33part of an affiliate
- 47:34doesn't mean they don't
- 47:34want to be a part of this outreach.
- 47:39I agree.
- 47:41I don't know.
- 47:42Do you see them doing that?
- 47:45I don't think there's been opportunities.
- 47:48I think when like,
- 47:49and this is my own theory.
- 47:52I think that when the media
- 47:55team went away from
- 47:55CrossFit and CrossFit
- 47:57started filming people
- 47:58doing this stuff or
- 48:00creating events to film people at,
- 48:03we lost that connection.
- 48:04Yeah.
- 48:05Yeah.
- 48:08So the opportunity went away
- 48:09for athletes to go do those
- 48:10types of things.
- 48:15Yeah.
- 48:16Now they feel like they are the commodity.
- 48:23Where I think there,
- 48:24there are other ways to
- 48:25make connections with the
- 48:26community outside of the affiliate model.
- 48:29Even though I'm a firm
- 48:30believer in the affiliate model,
- 48:32I see that there can be
- 48:33other ways as well.
- 48:50because the sport has
- 48:51professionalized more since
- 48:52then by the way most
- 48:54athletes might not be now
- 48:56but if you ask them their
- 48:58plan down the road when
- 48:59they are done that most of
- 49:01them will probably open a gym
- 49:04I don't think most of them
- 49:05even have work experience,
- 49:07so it makes sense that they open a gym.
- 49:09If I'm being honest,
- 49:10they've spent their whole
- 49:11years in the gym.
- 49:12Most are not even going to school,
- 49:15so they get their L-I,
- 49:16their L-II or whatever and open a gym.
- 49:19It's an easy transition for
- 49:22some of those athletes,
- 49:23especially if they've
- 49:24created a name for
- 49:24themselves and they can
- 49:26program and all that.
- 49:27It makes sense.
- 49:30If you have other...
- 49:32Degrees in career,
- 49:34your options are much bigger.
- 49:35Yeah.
- 49:39I think their options are more limited.
- 49:42And there's nothing wrong with that.
- 49:43I'm just saying that's why
- 49:47they need to maximize their sponsorships.
- 49:49They need to maximize their
- 49:53brand maybe and start programming,
- 49:55et cetera,
- 49:55to eventually be more
- 49:59successful when they
- 50:00transition into that part.
- 50:04Yeah.
- 50:08Miss naysayer Lex says,
- 50:10I laugh because they say
- 50:11open a gym with no business acumen.
- 50:14There's more to opening a
- 50:15gym than having a level one respectfully.
- 50:18It's true.
- 50:19The people that have done
- 50:19well opening a gym honestly
- 50:21have had really good partners.
- 50:24right like I can just think
- 50:26of locally graham holmberg
- 50:28bought the rogue building
- 50:30when they decided to become
- 50:32a manufacturer and they
- 50:33opened crossfit grandview
- 50:35and that was a partnership
- 50:36that eventually had joey
- 50:38tutoro and that group and
- 50:40that gym is massive now
- 50:41right because they had the
- 50:42right partners to grow that
- 50:44gym um so it can be done
- 50:47you have graham who won the
- 50:49games adds the name and
- 50:51then the partner who has
- 50:52the money in the business
- 50:53acumen to make it go
- 50:55And I've seen a lot of people do that.
- 51:00Um, so somewhere in here,
- 51:03Lex poses a question.
- 51:05Cause I think we're done with,
- 51:06we're done with, uh, fit fest UK, right?
- 51:08Yeah.
- 51:09I just, I, I,
- 51:10I hope that somebody sees
- 51:12that and they do kind of
- 51:13something like that here in
- 51:14the U S I think that it would be,
- 51:17and I maybe T that's what tears doing,
- 51:19but they've made it really
- 51:21see a serious competition
- 51:22and the athletes aren't
- 51:23going to go do a bunch of
- 51:24activations on top of that.
- 51:27While Patrick is there, though,
- 51:29thanks for doing the
- 51:30broadcast for that and that
- 51:31we were able to follow along.
- 51:33Yeah.
- 51:35So random talk a bit.
- 51:37Did you see Proven is doing
- 51:38some community challenge comp?
- 51:40I did not see that.
- 51:41I did a little bit, yes.
- 51:44I saw it was like thirty
- 51:45thousand or something like
- 51:46that and some prizes.
- 51:48But is it only affiliates
- 51:49that do their programing?
- 51:50Is it because it said it was free,
- 51:52but I don't know if it was
- 51:53free to everyone or what?
- 51:55I don't know all the details with it, but.
- 51:58Let me see if they have
- 51:59anything on their IG.
- 52:03You guys talk amongst yourself.
- 52:04I mean, you would think that it would be.
- 52:10proven community like if
- 52:11you're follow their vlog or
- 52:13you pay for their whatever
- 52:15or their was it wasn't
- 52:16mayhem going to be doing
- 52:17the same thing too like a
- 52:18mayhem I guess if it is
- 52:20just the proven community
- 52:21it's the same thing that
- 52:22mayhem um already proven
- 52:24gym so to me it's a similar
- 52:27concept then then what
- 52:28mayhem are answered uh I I
- 52:33will pull it up here it's not free oh so
- 52:41Over here.

- 53:40be sent an exclusive
- 53:40discount code for five
- 53:42dollars off your individual
- 53:44registration fee.
- 53:47So
- 53:49If I go to a gym that pays
- 53:51for proven affiliate programming,
- 53:56as everyone in that gym,
- 53:58get free registration to
- 54:00this leaderboard.
- 54:03This is confusing.
- 54:05I think it is completely
- 54:08free to gym owners, free to gym owners.
- 54:12I get that they get like,
- 54:14they'll get the workouts and stuff.
- 54:15The individuals have to are
- 54:17gonna have to pay.
- 54:18That's ridiculous.
- 54:20It's just another version of the open.
- 54:26It's just so more people get
- 54:29their proven thingy and
- 54:30then they'll use some of that money.
- 54:33It's an outreach marketing
- 54:34program similar to the open
- 54:36to bring in other gyms or individuals.
- 54:41Yeah, but I mean,
- 54:42I feel like if you have people,
- 54:44especially like whatever, get new sign up,
- 54:46new gyms to sign up.
- 54:47But I feel like you've had
- 54:48if you've had loyal gyms following.
- 54:52OK, Lynn says, yes, Jamie,
- 54:53our affiliate is proven and
- 54:54we're not paying.
- 54:55OK, that's good.
- 54:58That's the way it should be.
- 55:05And Lex is saying what I'm saying,
- 55:06it's free for an affiliate
- 55:06to sign up and get a free
- 55:08month of programming,
- 55:08but it costs individuals to register.
- 55:15Well, that's two differing things.
- 55:26It's going too fast.
- 55:27Dang it.
- 55:27All right, there we go.
- 55:28Do you think it's meant to
- 55:29be an alternative to the open?
- 55:31No.
- 55:32No.
- 55:33No, it's just a money thing for them.
- 55:36Get more people to do their programming.
- 55:38Yeah.
- 55:38Yeah.
- 55:43I suppose some people that
- 55:45are up in the air on the
- 55:47open or feel like they missed the.
- 55:50Twenty five percent or even
- 55:51ten percent cut off may
- 55:53take a stab at this.
- 55:54I don't know.
- 55:55I mean, is it.
- 55:57Is it twenty dollars,
- 55:58like what's the sign up for it?
- 55:59I don't know, but.
- 56:05Lex says because their post
- 56:07says they're asking people
- 56:08to comment for five dollars
- 56:09off the registration.
- 56:14Yeah,
- 56:15but that just be for like me for you.
- 56:21I would I would think if my
- 56:22gym was proven.
- 56:22I don't know.
- 56:24I mean, I How do they know?
- 56:28Well, that's true.
- 56:30Like I like I could just
- 56:32sign up and just say that
- 56:33my gym which doesn't do proven.
- 56:37Well,
- 56:37there's gotta be there's gotta be
- 56:39like an affiliate code.
- 56:41Like you need Yeah, okay.
- 56:43But not that that couldn't get shared.
- 56:46Yeah.
- 56:48I mean, if they're giving out thirty grand,
- 56:49they need to make money
- 56:50somehow unless they're just
- 56:51floating in it.
- 56:52Right.
- 56:53Yeah.
- 56:55So.
- 56:56Got to make money somehow.
- 57:00And I'm kind of a cynic.
- 57:01I think that maybe it is not.
- 57:04It's a test to see if it
- 57:05could be an alternate to the open.
- 57:07Now.
- 57:11OK.
- 57:14I mean,
- 57:14they're not going to get a hundred
- 57:15thousand people to sign up for that.
- 57:22All right, then it'd have to be cheap.
- 57:28Did you guys see that the
- 57:29documentary was number one on iTunes?
- 57:33I saw that it was number one.
- 57:34I did not see the documentary though.
- 57:36I have not seen the documentary,
- 57:37but I saw posts,
- 57:39I think somewhere that it was number one.
- 57:44Yeah.
- 57:46Did you watch it?
- 57:47I have not watched it.
- 57:48Okay.
- 57:48So none of us have watched it.
- 57:50We're doing great.
- 57:53Well, I really have a hard time.
- 57:55And the people that I have
- 57:57seen it and I've talked to
- 57:59have said it actually is pretty good.
- 58:02Yeah.
- 58:03Yeah.
- 58:05I didn't watch any,
- 58:06like I have really been
- 58:07busy this weekend.
- 58:07Same.
- 58:08I haven't even watched
- 58:08Taylor's recap on it.
- 58:09And I would normally have
- 58:10not watched any of the reviews, but I,
- 58:12but cat from our Thursday
- 58:14show has seen it said it was pretty,
- 58:17it was actually pretty good.
- 58:19Well,
- 58:19it would have a different perspective.
- 58:21As soon as it's different
- 58:22people producing it,
- 58:25because the other ones were
- 58:27getting the same type of
- 58:29going through first event, second event,
- 58:31third.
- 58:31And I don't know what this
- 58:32one is going to be like,
- 58:33but just having new producers,
- 58:35they could have a different
- 58:36angle of the games that we
- 58:39haven't really shown.
- 58:40Yeah.
- 58:41I'm curious to see um in
- 58:44years past they usually do
- 58:45like a christmas sale or
- 58:46something on it and so I
- 58:47just was hoping yeah in
- 58:49like a week or two uh it
- 58:51would go on sale and I
- 58:52would get it for the
- 58:53cheaper price same since
- 58:55it's already a year and a
- 58:56half old like I'm not that
- 58:58far behind everybody else
- 59:03but it also tells that
- 59:06there still is a demand
- 59:08is a demand for some of this
- 59:09stuff if it's number one on
- 59:11itunes in the documentary
- 59:12category how many how many
- 59:15new documentaries are out
- 59:17is this just a slow time I
- 59:19I love documentaries I
- 59:21watch it quite honestly I
- 59:24think that it's I think
- 59:26people are buying it not
- 59:28knowing that it's
- 59:32I think there's people not
- 59:34necessarily in the CrossFit that are like,
- 59:36oh, they've got a documentary on that.
- 59:40You could be right with that.
- 59:41We know it's a Twenty Twenty Three,
- 59:44but some people are like, yeah,
- 59:46you're right.
- 59:58Yeah.
- 59:58Yeah.
- 59:59Lex.
- 59:59She's not wrong, though.
- 1:00:02I have a pretty good catalog.
- 1:00:03I used to buy them because I
- 1:00:05liked them to have them on
- 1:00:06a plane because you can
- 1:00:07download them and have them.
- 1:00:08And,
- 1:00:09and if you have no internet on the plane,
- 1:00:11you can actually like just
- 1:00:12sit and watch stuff.
- 1:00:13So,
- 1:00:15but I only buy like select things that
- 1:00:16I would buy.
- 1:00:17I would watch over and over again.
- 1:00:19And so, but anyway,
- 1:00:28Patrick says,
- 1:00:28name another sport that does
- 1:00:29yearly documentaries.
- 1:00:31Even Hard Knocks is different every year.
- 1:00:34Hard Knocks is up to three a year,
- 1:00:36but they do pick different
- 1:00:41teams or concepts each one.
- 1:00:45Is that like when they did
- 1:00:46the quarterback?
- 1:00:48No,
- 1:00:48Hard Knocks is the Chicago Bears were
- 1:00:51Hard Knocks this year.
- 1:00:52It's been an HBO Max thing
- 1:00:55for twenty some years.
- 1:00:57And it started as just a
- 1:00:58training camp documentary.
- 1:01:01And now they do an in season one.
- 1:01:02And this year it's the AFC North.
- 1:01:05Um, and then they,
- 1:01:06they did an off season one
- 1:01:09that the giants were on this last year,
- 1:01:10but they gave away so many
- 1:01:12secrets that no team will
- 1:01:14ever do it again.
- 1:01:15Gotcha.
- 1:01:18Cause it showed them the
- 1:01:20giants getting rid of
- 1:01:20Saquon Barkley saying that
- 1:01:22he was too old for running
- 1:01:24back and they were going to
- 1:01:25bank on Daniel Jones.
- 1:01:28And if you watch football
- 1:01:29this year and you see
- 1:01:30Saquon Barkley is in the
- 1:01:31MVP talk and Daniel Jones
- 1:01:33has been cut from the giants.
- 1:01:34It makes them look like asses,
- 1:01:40but they're great.
- 1:01:41It was great to watch in the moment.
- 1:01:44I mean, I love that stuff.
- 1:01:50Uh, vice says huge mistake.
- 1:01:51Go birds as an Eagles fan.
- 1:01:54She made out in that deal.
- 1:01:58Um,
- 1:01:58Patrick said they find a way to refresh
- 1:02:00it every year.
- 1:02:01CrossFit doesn't have a new storyline.
- 1:02:03Even if they do,
- 1:02:03they avoid talking about it
- 1:02:04because they only care about the winners.
- 1:02:06That is the point.
- 1:02:08There are new storylines every year,
- 1:02:09right?
- 1:02:11They're just not willing in
- 1:02:13two thousand fourteen when
- 1:02:14they did the road to the
- 1:02:15games with people that we
- 1:02:16had just barely heard of.
- 1:02:18That was like the the climax
- 1:02:21of when they were good.
- 1:02:22Right.
- 1:02:23Ever since then,
- 1:02:24it's just been the winners.
- 1:02:25Yep.
- 1:02:27But apparently this one
- 1:02:28didn't really talk much
- 1:02:29about Ariel and Laura and
- 1:02:32they were on the podium for
- 1:02:33the female side.
- 1:02:34So.
- 1:02:34Correct.
- 1:02:35Interesting.
- 1:02:39Well, that is too kind to say, Patrick.
- 1:02:41Thank you so much.
- 1:02:47Yeah, I've heard that.
- 1:02:48The biggest complaint I
- 1:02:49heard is that Ariel is not in it at all.
- 1:02:51And my comment to Kat was
- 1:02:56that at some point,
- 1:02:58don't the people doing the
- 1:02:59documentary say, hey,
- 1:03:00maybe we should pivot onto
- 1:03:01this storyline that's
- 1:03:02happening over here?
- 1:03:04I think that's been the
- 1:03:05problem with the CrossFit documentaries.
- 1:03:08They never pivot.
- 1:03:10When Tia Toomey takes second
- 1:03:12two years in a row and you
- 1:03:13have hardly any footage at
- 1:03:15all in those two years of
- 1:03:17those documentaries,
- 1:03:18now they have definitely
- 1:03:19made up for it since then.
- 1:03:20Yeah.
- 1:03:23But that first year,
- 1:03:24she didn't even show up in
- 1:03:25the documentary until
- 1:03:26walking home to her car.
- 1:03:30That's so strange.
- 1:03:36It's easy to stick to a script,
- 1:03:38but maybe that's not the right choice.
- 1:03:40I don't understand.
- 1:03:41I mean,
- 1:03:42are they limited on like memory
- 1:03:44cards or batteries or what?
- 1:03:46Like,
- 1:03:46why are you just not getting foot
- 1:03:48like constant footage and
- 1:03:50coming up with a script afterwards?
- 1:03:53so that is a lame excuse any
- 1:03:55of that stuff that you
- 1:03:56brought up because you just
- 1:03:57go back to your laptop with
- 1:03:58your hard drive you
- 1:03:59download everything clean
- 1:04:00off your card and you go
- 1:04:01back out and shoot that's
- 1:04:02what I'm saying like how is
- 1:04:03there not footage of
- 1:04:04literally everyone in every
- 1:04:07heat of every like when I'm
- 1:04:09at semis I have so much
- 1:04:11footage it's ridiculous
- 1:04:15literally every heat I know
- 1:04:18so I don't I care about all
- 1:04:21that and there are groups that don't
- 1:04:23If you're making a documentary,
- 1:04:25you get footage of
- 1:04:26everything because you
- 1:04:27don't know what's going to happen.
- 1:04:31I don't get it.
- 1:04:36So Emily and Jonathan were
- 1:04:37at the helm of this one, apparently.
- 1:04:39But I thought it was a third
- 1:04:40party that they... They
- 1:04:42probably used Emily and
- 1:04:43Jonathan to lead them and
- 1:04:45explain to them athletes
- 1:04:46and give them storylines.
- 1:04:47And that's just silly.
- 1:04:48That's the thing.
- 1:04:49Somebody new should just
- 1:04:49come in and just...
- 1:04:51gobbled up footage and written,
- 1:04:54saw what was entertaining
- 1:04:55to them per event and like
- 1:04:57come up with stories.
- 1:05:00Who caught your eye?
- 1:05:01Who like, I don't, it doesn't make sense.
- 1:05:03I know again,
- 1:05:06there are people like when we
- 1:05:07go to these events,
- 1:05:08we sit there and we talk and we say, who,
- 1:05:11who is your surprise?
- 1:05:12Who is your,
- 1:05:13who do you think is going to
- 1:05:14like come out of this muck and be like,
- 1:05:17they apparently don't have those meetings,
- 1:05:19right?
- 1:05:20Yeah, like they should be talking.
- 1:05:22They should be filming a
- 1:05:23bunch of things without any, you know,
- 1:05:26like blanks.
- 1:05:29And then just kind of, you know,
- 1:05:31as the competition unfolds,
- 1:05:33like there's always
- 1:05:33storylines and it's like
- 1:05:35lean into that and figure
- 1:05:37out and talk to the fans or
- 1:05:38talk to other people and
- 1:05:39see what's going on and
- 1:05:41what would be interesting.
- 1:05:43And yeah,
- 1:05:43like then you start exploring
- 1:05:45more of that person as, you know,
- 1:05:47they're creeping up or...
- 1:05:50an injury happens and I'm
- 1:05:52not talking the
- 1:05:52documentaries from like
- 1:05:58like like this one I've not
- 1:05:59seen so I'm not dogging it
- 1:06:01yet I will reserve my
- 1:06:02dogging until I see it yeah
- 1:06:08amen sister also feature
- 1:06:10more rookies and more
- 1:06:11international athletes yep
- 1:06:13yes yes yes we have been
- 1:06:15pounding that drum for five years
- 1:06:21um also pat velner spoke
- 1:06:26last week did you guys
- 1:06:28catch that on coffee pods
- 1:06:29and mods I did there seems
- 1:06:34to be some kind of outcry
- 1:06:35that like pat has changed
- 1:06:37and now I'm no longer a fan
- 1:06:38yeah I've heard I've heard a lot of that
- 1:06:44I found, and this is my opinion,
- 1:06:46and you can call me wrong or not,
- 1:06:47Pat has always been critical of CrossFit.
- 1:06:49He's always been critical of Dave.
- 1:06:51I don't think anything has changed.
- 1:06:54And he is a veteran athlete,
- 1:06:56and if he doesn't want to
- 1:06:58compete anymore in the Open,
- 1:07:00that's his choice.
- 1:07:01He's thirty-five years old.
- 1:07:03He's had a great career.
- 1:07:05And if he only wants to do
- 1:07:06select events...
- 1:07:08That's fine.
- 1:07:09I think it's very consistent
- 1:07:10with who he has always been.
- 1:07:12Yeah.
- 1:07:12Like he's extremely laid back,
- 1:07:14but he's very critical and he's like, uh,
- 1:07:19yeah, he's, he's always been like that.
- 1:07:20He's, um,
- 1:07:21he's not afraid to speak up and
- 1:07:24like a lot of people don't
- 1:07:25speak up and he's one of
- 1:07:26those athletes that does speak up.
- 1:07:28Um,
- 1:07:29Like, in the briefings,
- 1:07:30he's always asking questions.
- 1:07:31Like, he wants, you know,
- 1:07:33everyone to have a fair
- 1:07:35game and stuff like that.
- 1:07:36Like,
- 1:07:36I don't see that there's a huge
- 1:07:38change necessarily with Pat, I think.
- 1:07:42But at a certain point, like, you know...
- 1:07:46And he has a different
- 1:07:47experience than other people.
- 1:07:48There's a lot of opinions of
- 1:07:51people that have never been at the games.
- 1:07:53There's a lot of opinions of
- 1:07:55people that have been on
- 1:07:55the team side and not on
- 1:07:57the individual side.
- 1:07:58And that's different.
- 1:08:00It is a different experience.
- 1:08:01So you have someone that has
- 1:08:03nine years or ten years of
- 1:08:05experience and people have
- 1:08:09their own opinions and
- 1:08:09don't want to believe
- 1:08:10anything that he's saying.
- 1:08:11And I think that
- 1:08:13he's coming from his
- 1:08:14perspective and um he's not
- 1:08:16a stupid guy he's extremely
- 1:08:18smart and he's obviously
- 1:08:20experienced some stuff that
- 1:08:22other people may not have
- 1:08:23and may not understand um
- 1:08:26but I don't think that
- 1:08:27there's any differences
- 1:08:30really and like his
- 1:08:32interview with Castro was
- 1:08:33one of the best ones yeah I
- 1:08:34enjoyed it and he and he
- 1:08:36was critical to Dave's face
- 1:08:38Yeah.
- 1:08:38He wasn't afraid.
- 1:08:39Right.
- 1:08:40Like everyone else is,
- 1:08:41it was chicken and they, they're,
- 1:08:43they want to stroke Dave's
- 1:08:44ego all the time and,
- 1:08:45and get on his good side
- 1:08:46because there's people that
- 1:08:48have been blackballed for
- 1:08:50different opportunities in the past.
- 1:08:51And, you know,
- 1:08:52you don't want to lose that.
- 1:08:53So you, you put your best, you know,
- 1:08:56your best foot forward and
- 1:08:57you try to keep those opportunities.
- 1:08:59And, but then behind the scenes,
- 1:09:01there's other,
- 1:09:01like there's differences of opinions.
- 1:09:03It's yeah.
- 1:09:05Yeah.
- 1:09:07I mean,
- 1:09:09Pat's one of those guys that
- 1:09:10has a life outside of CrossFit.
- 1:09:12Like if this doesn't go,
- 1:09:14if this doesn't continue for him,
- 1:09:15then he's fine.
- 1:09:16Right.
- 1:09:17He's a happily married man
- 1:09:20with kids and a job that he
- 1:09:22can go support himself and
- 1:09:24he'll be just fine.
- 1:09:25So like, this isn't his livelihood.
- 1:09:29Um, yeah.
- 1:09:31Yeah.
- 1:09:33The only beef I had with the whole thing,
- 1:09:35and it's been my beef with
- 1:09:36the PFAA from the beginning,
- 1:09:38and that is it's very easy
- 1:09:40for Brent and Pat to make
- 1:09:41these statements because
- 1:09:43they've made their money.
- 1:09:45They've had their successes.
- 1:09:46They've done all this stuff.
- 1:09:48And I think it's a lot
- 1:09:49harder for the people,
- 1:09:51and I'm just using people
- 1:09:53that I knew really well during this time,
- 1:09:55the Hattie Canyos that are that bubble,
- 1:09:58games, semifinal athlete, Kelly Baker.
- 1:10:02to make those same decisions
- 1:10:03when it's not assured that
- 1:10:05they're going to the games every year.
- 1:10:07Right.
- 1:10:09Or that they're going to get
- 1:10:10invites to Wadapalooza or
- 1:10:12they're going to get
- 1:10:13invites to Dubai or Rogue.
- 1:10:15It's a lot harder for them without...
- 1:10:19And so I think the PFA
- 1:10:22should exist and it should
- 1:10:24support athletes,
- 1:10:25but there is no clear cut
- 1:10:26plan of how an athlete is
- 1:10:29to make any money at all
- 1:10:31through the season and as
- 1:10:32an alternate way to the game season.
- 1:10:35But I think that's what he
- 1:10:35talked about was especially
- 1:10:38people that don't have
- 1:10:39those same opportunities.
- 1:10:40Like Jeff can go anywhere
- 1:10:41and basically win, like, you know, or get,
- 1:10:44you know, top, top money.
- 1:10:46But if you are one of those
- 1:10:48athletes that go to these
- 1:10:52competitions and you're not
- 1:10:53guaranteed any money and
- 1:10:54you're out of pocket,
- 1:10:55you're looking for as many
- 1:10:56competitions as you can,
- 1:10:58whether it's both seasons,
- 1:10:59the Open and the other ones,
- 1:11:01just to kind of get your opportunity,
- 1:11:03get your sponsorships,
- 1:11:04get the door open a little bit for you.
- 1:11:06So that's what he said,
- 1:11:08is that certain athletes
- 1:11:09like himself or other
- 1:11:11people that have some
- 1:11:12experience or are at the higher end,
- 1:11:14they have that...
- 1:11:17you know,
- 1:11:17a different path that they can take.
- 1:11:19And that option is still
- 1:11:20very good is what he said.
- 1:11:22Like he's made as much money, if not more,
- 1:11:24way more during outside competitions than,
- 1:11:28than the open.
- 1:11:30Like a couple of times like that alone.
- 1:11:31And what a Palooza.
- 1:11:35So, but I did appreciate that.
- 1:11:36He said, Hey, if,
- 1:11:38if you feel like you need
- 1:11:39to go through the open and
- 1:11:40the CrossFit game season,
- 1:11:42that that's completely up to you.
- 1:11:43And we will support you through that.
- 1:11:48And so I did respect that he did say that.
- 1:11:49Yeah.
- 1:11:54So,
- 1:12:00and Lynn just echoes what Carolyn just
- 1:12:02said, Hey, I can make that decision,
- 1:12:04but for new athletes to do the open,
- 1:12:05get more experience in comms.
- 1:12:08Yeah.
- 1:12:09You don't want to be
- 1:12:10competing online the whole time too.
- 1:12:12But if that's the way that
- 1:12:13you can maybe get there,
- 1:12:14like some people will take
- 1:12:15that and other people will
- 1:12:16want to go in person.
- 1:12:17Like there's two each their own.
- 1:12:22Um, Beck says, uh,
- 1:12:26I I'm both a CrossFit fan
- 1:12:27and a Vellner fan.
- 1:12:28I think there's a weird
- 1:12:29mentality out there that
- 1:12:30people need to choose which one.
- 1:12:33And you don't really need to
- 1:12:34choose which one.
- 1:12:38Right now,
- 1:12:38we don't know what the hell each one is.
- 1:12:41Which one what?
- 1:12:42Like, what do we have?
- 1:12:44Yeah, what do we have?
- 1:12:45I found it a little strange
- 1:12:47in the interview,
- 1:12:48and maybe I missed
- 1:12:49something or I needed to rewind it.
- 1:12:50I don't know.
- 1:12:51Maybe you guys can fill me in.
- 1:12:53I feel like Pat sort of,
- 1:12:55I don't even know if he was
- 1:12:56attacking Peter or the
- 1:12:59community in general,
- 1:13:00but basically said something about, like,
- 1:13:03there's two, not necessarily leaks,
- 1:13:05but there's just too much
- 1:13:06like talking and people
- 1:13:07think they know information.
- 1:13:08And then it's,
- 1:13:09and I don't know if he was
- 1:13:10talking about the world
- 1:13:11fitness project and Peter
- 1:13:13saying something about it.
- 1:13:15He was saying that the world
- 1:13:16fitness project had, that has no leaks.
- 1:13:18And then Peter said,
- 1:13:19I know as much about that
- 1:13:21as I know about the game season, which is,
- 1:13:24but, but I feel like he was saying it is,
- 1:13:27it is some things.
- 1:13:30Yes.
- 1:13:31He was indicating that he
- 1:13:32knows that it has leaked as
- 1:13:34much as the game season has leaked.
- 1:13:36It's going to leak.
- 1:13:38It's going to leak.
- 1:13:39Both sides are going to leak.
- 1:13:40We have a sport that's
- 1:13:42unknown and people want to
- 1:13:44get any information and that's just it.
- 1:13:49Unless you make a sport
- 1:13:51that's known and you
- 1:13:53release certain information,
- 1:13:55you're going to get people
- 1:13:55that know information above others.
- 1:13:57That's who you know.
- 1:14:00That's the unfair part of our sport.
- 1:14:03One of many, but yeah.
- 1:14:06I think it should just all
- 1:14:07come out the second it
- 1:14:08starts being leaked.
- 1:14:10Just post it.
- 1:14:11World Fitness Project needs
- 1:14:13to post whatever the frick
- 1:14:14it is that's going on
- 1:14:15because clearly people know.
- 1:14:19Put out the information.
- 1:14:23Patrick mentions the media
- 1:14:24is the same way.
- 1:14:26I learn about a lot of
- 1:14:27things and I say nothing.
- 1:14:29because I don't know if it's
- 1:14:31true or not like I hear of
- 1:14:34all the rumors I've heard
- 1:14:35only about fifty percent of
- 1:14:36it actually came true like
- 1:14:40I wonder if each one of
- 1:14:41them is just waiting for
- 1:14:42the other person's cards to
- 1:14:43kind of get released or
- 1:14:44something you know like the
- 1:14:46world fitness project is
- 1:14:47waiting for the games the
- 1:14:48games might be I don't
- 1:14:50think the games would be
- 1:14:50waiting for the other way but
- 1:14:54The biggest mistake is the game season,
- 1:14:57in a year that they needed
- 1:14:59to have their stuff buttoned up,
- 1:15:01they didn't do it.
- 1:15:04Because everybody is nipping
- 1:15:05at their heels,
- 1:15:06and they needed to have the
- 1:15:08shit buttoned up this year,
- 1:15:10and they didn't do it.
- 1:15:11Yeah.
- 1:15:12I don't understand how you wait those many,
- 1:15:14like that many months.
- 1:15:15You don't talk to like, you know,
- 1:15:17there's no information to the community,
- 1:15:18anything.
- 1:15:19And then you release a very
- 1:15:21vague statement and no real
- 1:15:25information on the season.
- 1:15:27You give ranges of what people qualifying,
- 1:15:30like there's just no details.
- 1:15:31And it's like, Oh yeah, the,
- 1:15:34the rule book will be out and who knows,
- 1:15:36January or whatever.
- 1:15:37And it's like,
- 1:15:39What like there's already a
- 1:15:41huge lack of trust.
- 1:15:42Like there was a lack of
- 1:15:43trust prior to the games.
- 1:15:44And then we know what
- 1:15:46happened and you're not,
- 1:15:48they're not working to get
- 1:15:51that trust back when they
- 1:15:52release bag information like that.
- 1:15:56Uh, vice says, Scott, you're the exception,
- 1:15:57not the rule.
- 1:15:59I wish I wasn't,
- 1:16:00but my podcast is based on relationships,
- 1:16:02right?
- 1:16:03the relationships I build
- 1:16:04with people so that I can
- 1:16:05have them on to have
- 1:16:07conversations and things like that.
- 1:16:09And if I did anything to destroy that,
- 1:16:12I would lose my podcast.
- 1:16:15And it's what I believe,
- 1:16:17that you don't tell other
- 1:16:20people's stories.
- 1:16:21Patrick said, it's their story to tell.
- 1:16:24And I completely agree with that.
- 1:16:25But my job is to create relationships with
- 1:16:29all these athletes,
- 1:16:30all these players in the game.
- 1:16:32And so that they can come on
- 1:16:35and feel okay about telling
- 1:16:36me things because I'm not
- 1:16:37going to go tell the world.
- 1:16:46Yeah.
- 1:16:46Um, so with that, um,
- 1:16:52I think that wraps up Velner.
- 1:16:54Um, and then my last question is,
- 1:16:57this has been going around on, uh,
- 1:17:00I know I saw it on Around
- 1:17:01the Whiteboard as an option
- 1:17:03to fix CrossFit in the United States.
- 1:17:06And that is to shrink it.
- 1:17:08Meaning,
- 1:17:10invest more in smaller locations
- 1:17:13to hold events,
- 1:17:15Like an example was given
- 1:17:17like the Mayhem Classic
- 1:17:18because it only allowed in
- 1:17:20like six hundred to a thousand people.
- 1:17:22It looked packed when you
- 1:17:24hold an event there.
- 1:17:25Right.
- 1:17:26Or like Crash,
- 1:17:27when you look around the venue,
- 1:17:29it's packed with people
- 1:17:30because they are there.
- 1:17:32CrossFit says it eloquently,
- 1:17:34boutique events.
- 1:17:37where you get big names
- 1:17:38where people will pay a
- 1:17:40premium price to get a
- 1:17:41really great seat in a small location.
- 1:17:44And as that grows and then
- 1:17:47the demand grows,
- 1:17:48then you can start moving
- 1:17:49into a little bit bigger
- 1:17:50and a little bit bigger and
- 1:17:51a little bit bigger.
- 1:17:52But to think that we are
- 1:17:53still in a place where you
- 1:17:54can get the tennis stadium
- 1:17:56in Carson and fill it, we're not there.
- 1:18:01Thoughts?
- 1:18:02No, I agree.
- 1:18:03I mean,
- 1:18:03I do think tennis stadiums kind of
- 1:18:06are the sweet spot.
- 1:18:07Like Dubai didn't,
- 1:18:09it sucks that Dubai didn't
- 1:18:10have more people, but like that, that,
- 1:18:12that size,
- 1:18:14if you could get that even half filled,
- 1:18:18I think would be electric for fans.
- 1:18:20It's close enough that you
- 1:18:21can see as a fan and not
- 1:18:24too big that you don't feel
- 1:18:26like you're can spectate or
- 1:18:28be a part or yell or be heard.
- 1:18:32So I don't know if any of
- 1:18:32you went to mayhem that year,
- 1:18:35but it was the best
- 1:18:38competition I ever witnessed in person.
- 1:18:41There was six lanes.
- 1:18:43Lex competed, I think,
- 1:18:44or is the year you're talking about,
- 1:18:46I think.
- 1:18:46It only existed one year.
- 1:18:48Okay, so yeah.
- 1:18:49There was like an outdoor run.
- 1:18:51They had the double unders
- 1:18:52at the rope climb.
- 1:18:52Yeah, Lex was at that one.
- 1:18:53Selena was there too.
- 1:18:55She said she liked that competition.
- 1:18:56They only had six lanes.
- 1:18:58It was easy to see everybody.
- 1:19:00And then they had stands at
- 1:19:02the finish line.
- 1:19:04And then the rest was just
- 1:19:05standing room only around the sides.
- 1:19:06And it was packed.
- 1:19:07And then they had a VIP lounge,
- 1:19:08if you've ever seen Mayhem,
- 1:19:10like above their gift shop.
- 1:19:12There's like a little...
- 1:19:15patio I don't know almost
- 1:19:17you could go up there and
- 1:19:18hang out um and they would
- 1:19:20they brought in other
- 1:19:22crossfit athletes that
- 1:19:22weren't competing to hang
- 1:19:23out with the vips up there
- 1:19:26and you you could look down
- 1:19:27over the the field of play
- 1:19:28you were right above it so
- 1:19:31like you're suggesting that
- 1:19:33major competitions be like
- 1:19:35held in affiliates I'm saying that
- 1:19:40There'd be no hotels.
- 1:19:41It depends on the city and stuff.
- 1:19:45I don't know.
- 1:19:46I think certain comps can
- 1:19:47get away with it.
- 1:19:48Crash is a very unique...
- 1:19:51And that's why it's cool.
- 1:19:52That happens once,
- 1:19:54but I don't think that many
- 1:19:56can happen like that.
- 1:19:57It would just get so... I'm
- 1:19:59saying that maybe instead
- 1:20:00of having a bunch of
- 1:20:03major... Rogue's going to sell out.
- 1:20:05Waterpalooza's going to sell out.
- 1:20:06I'm not asking them to shrink.
- 1:20:08But our semifinals have not been good.
- 1:20:13You couldn't do a semifinals?
- 1:20:14I thought East was pretty good.
- 1:20:15I thought it was pretty good.
- 1:20:17It wasn't sold out.
- 1:20:19But you couldn't do that
- 1:20:21type of competition with
- 1:20:22all the teams and individuals and stuff.
- 1:20:24There'd be no room.
- 1:20:26There'd be no warm-up area.
- 1:20:27Do you think teams are still
- 1:20:28going to play along in the future?
- 1:20:30I don't know.
- 1:20:33I think...
- 1:20:35It just was like,
- 1:20:36I thought it was a cool concept.
- 1:20:37These comps need to make money, too.
- 1:20:39If it's not an affiliate and
- 1:20:40it's a small little place, having teams,
- 1:20:43having more athletes compete,
- 1:20:45help people go to the stands.
- 1:20:47Because all of a sudden,
- 1:20:48if you have a community
- 1:20:49event and there's scaled divisions,
- 1:20:52those people all of a sudden,
- 1:20:53between their events,
- 1:20:54they're in the stands and
- 1:20:55it looks filled.
- 1:20:56Yeah.
- 1:20:57they get their families there.
- 1:20:58Like that's why Granite
- 1:20:59games worked very well before too.
- 1:21:01Like there was just so many
- 1:21:03different divisions going
- 1:21:04on and you still had the
- 1:21:05elites that were there.
- 1:21:06It just was St.
- 1:21:08Cloud was just not a good
- 1:21:09location to get hotels or fly into.
- 1:21:13Um,
- 1:21:14But like a place like Mayhem, right?
- 1:21:16That affiliate is huge.
- 1:21:17And there are plenty of
- 1:21:18hotels in Cookville to support that.
- 1:21:22If you held like a smaller semifinal,
- 1:21:24and we had more semifinals,
- 1:21:26but people were paying a
- 1:21:28premium to go because it
- 1:21:29was limited seating,
- 1:21:31like that Mayhem Classic sold out.
- 1:21:35And it was way more,
- 1:21:36it was games price to get in.
- 1:21:40And it sold out.
- 1:21:42just I think like we need to
- 1:21:45think outside the box to
- 1:21:47make it look appealing for
- 1:21:49vendors for other
- 1:21:50spectators for and offer
- 1:21:53something different yeah I
- 1:21:57don't know I was sort of
- 1:21:58talking to aaron about that
- 1:22:00too and why like like you
- 1:22:04almost need more
- 1:22:07I don't even know how it would work,
- 1:22:08but I feel like what's so
- 1:22:10draining about CrossFit and
- 1:22:11as a spectator is, and even at home,
- 1:22:15trying to watch three days
- 1:22:17of Dubai or catch up on things.
- 1:22:19Kind of like Carolyn said,
- 1:22:23if we could shrink a High
- 1:22:26Rocks event into more of a
- 1:22:27CrossFit event.
- 1:22:28And it was just one day, just like an hour,
- 1:22:31like a gauntlet.
- 1:22:33Go around cities and do this
- 1:22:36event that takes...
- 1:22:38an hour and yeah maybe you
- 1:22:39run heats of it I don't
- 1:22:40know but like and then if
- 1:22:42that could extract like
- 1:22:44maybe there was like an
- 1:22:44online portion then that
- 1:22:46score counted and then like
- 1:22:47two more events like that
- 1:22:48counted into a end of the
- 1:22:51month or end of the quarter
- 1:22:53score it is hard it's hard
- 1:22:57to as a spectator to want
- 1:22:58to go travel multiple times
- 1:23:01for three days or more and
- 1:23:03spend a fortune just go watch an event
- 1:23:07I don't know.
- 1:23:07If you could get more local
- 1:23:08comps that were quick, short things,
- 1:23:12I don't know if it would work.
- 1:23:16I think we try to cram too much in.
- 1:23:19If it wants to be a professional sport,
- 1:23:20you don't need to add in
- 1:23:21all the other stuff.
- 1:23:24You just... Like six lanes,
- 1:23:27eighteen athletes.
- 1:23:29You can qualify for the
- 1:23:30CrossFit Games by coming
- 1:23:31here if you finish top two or top three,
- 1:23:33whatever it is.
- 1:23:34And...
- 1:23:36you have an awesome event
- 1:23:38and maybe teams is a
- 1:23:39separate place at a
- 1:23:40separate time so that it's
- 1:23:43not an all day event.
- 1:23:44You can come, they,
- 1:23:45you get three events done
- 1:23:47by two o'clock in the
- 1:23:48afternoon and you have your
- 1:23:49evenings to go enjoy yourself.
- 1:23:51Like,
- 1:23:51I think that's why the invitational
- 1:23:53worked really well for teams back then.
- 1:23:55Like, like team Canada versus team,
- 1:23:56you say they like condense
- 1:23:58the schedule into like two
- 1:24:00to three hours.
- 1:24:01And it's like, boom, like event, event,
- 1:24:03event.
- 1:24:04And like, yeah,
- 1:24:04it's hard on the athletes
- 1:24:05that you'd have to
- 1:24:06basically maybe modify the
- 1:24:07test where it is kind of more sellable,
- 1:24:10sellable.
- 1:24:11So you can sell it to, you know,
- 1:24:15just more viewable.
- 1:24:16Um,
- 1:24:17This was my other piece.
- 1:24:20Lynn says,
- 1:24:20I think the market would be in
- 1:24:22meeting top athletes.
- 1:24:24Like people go to Mayhem,
- 1:24:25so you can hopefully take a
- 1:24:26photo with Rich or Roman.
- 1:24:28If there was a fan
- 1:24:28experience meeting athletes,
- 1:24:29they'd sell out.
- 1:24:30Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:24:33Pat has a point here.
- 1:24:37I think, okay, go ahead, read it.
- 1:24:40I don't think there is a
- 1:24:41strong market for in-person spectators.
- 1:24:43For most major competitions,
- 1:24:44the athletes are the
- 1:24:45customers and the athletes
- 1:24:47fees generate the revenue.
- 1:24:48I think that's exactly what
- 1:24:49the bigger comps have started to do.
- 1:24:51That's why they add
- 1:24:52intermediate and novice and
- 1:24:53teams and pile it up to
- 1:24:56five hundred athletes.
- 1:24:56So they're making three
- 1:24:57hundred dollars per person
- 1:25:00times five hundred athletes.
- 1:25:02And that's what.
- 1:25:03Yeah.
- 1:25:03And the prices just keep
- 1:25:04going up and up and up every competition.
- 1:25:06Like when we started,
- 1:25:07it wasn't this expensive.
- 1:25:08Like I can't do any local comp now.
- 1:25:10Like local comps now are
- 1:25:11like a hundred and
- 1:25:13something dollars to participate.
- 1:25:15Like they used to be like fifty bucks.
- 1:25:16Like, yeah,
- 1:25:17it's just it's so expensive now.
- 1:25:19What I'm saying is we need
- 1:25:20to change the model.
- 1:25:21When was the last time we.
- 1:25:23So let's just take semifinals,
- 1:25:24for example.
- 1:25:25We when was the last time we
- 1:25:27advertised semifinals?
- 1:25:33And announced it in time for
- 1:25:35people to be able to make plans.
- 1:25:37We can't even announce anything on time.
- 1:25:40But that's a major flaw in
- 1:25:42trying to get spectators.
- 1:25:44Spectators need to plan their vacation.
- 1:25:47They need to submit vacation leave.
- 1:25:49They need to get hotels.
- 1:25:50They need to get flights.
- 1:25:52You need to get things.
- 1:25:53By these late announcements,
- 1:25:55nobody... And my God, as a union member,
- 1:25:58we don't even get advance notice.
- 1:26:01I had to...
- 1:26:02crap out on west coast last
- 1:26:03year because I had no time
- 1:26:05to get anything
- 1:26:06So if you look at the new
- 1:26:08season for CrossFit,
- 1:26:09you can't promote any
- 1:26:10athletes coming to your
- 1:26:11event because you don't
- 1:26:12know who is going in the semifinals,
- 1:26:14who is already going to qualify.
- 1:26:16So that's a big negative.
- 1:26:18Like you can't be promoting
- 1:26:19things in advance like, oh,
- 1:26:21Torian is going to host
- 1:26:23this competition and you're
- 1:26:24going to get to see this
- 1:26:26and this athlete get your
- 1:26:27tickets right now,
- 1:26:28start selling right now.
- 1:26:29No,
- 1:26:29there's no – like you don't even know
- 1:26:31what competition.
- 1:26:32You have no idea what
- 1:26:32athletes are going to be competing.
- 1:26:36regions that they're
- 1:26:36qualifying in like there's
- 1:26:38just no information you
- 1:26:40can't promote any event
- 1:26:41that doesn't even exist
- 1:26:42right now so they wait till
- 1:26:44the last minute it's too
- 1:26:45late there's something to
- 1:26:47getting to meet athletes in
- 1:26:48a more intimate setting
- 1:26:50lynn says I almost came to
- 1:26:51crash because I could see
- 1:26:52carolyn in person then she
- 1:26:55says heck in aberdeen
- 1:26:56aberdeen we almost closed
- 1:26:58down the hilton reception
- 1:26:59because danny said we could
- 1:27:00say hi yeah the line was huge to see her
- 1:27:05If you go to the Arnold and
- 1:27:07you go to the Rogue booth
- 1:27:08when any of the top Rogue
- 1:27:10athletes are there taking selfies,
- 1:27:13the line is around the
- 1:27:15Rogue booth and down the hallway.
- 1:27:18It is an hour wait to get in to see them.
- 1:27:22There's something there that
- 1:27:23we're not capitalizing on.
- 1:27:29And I say we as the collective we.
- 1:27:30Okay.
- 1:27:36Kenneth saw his Carolina
- 1:27:37crash and was too scared
- 1:27:38and starstruck to say hi.
- 1:27:45Normal human.
- 1:27:47On that note, we'll finish it up there.
- 1:27:52Guys, as always,
- 1:27:53it's been fun having this
- 1:27:55chat and this conversation.
- 1:27:57If I remember next week to
- 1:27:58put it in the notes,
- 1:27:59we do have to have that
- 1:28:00conversation about can
- 1:28:01there be a traveling CrossFit show?
- 1:28:03Yeah.
- 1:28:06So if I don't put it in,
- 1:28:06please put it in the
- 1:28:07rundown for next week when
- 1:28:09I put out the document.
- 1:28:09Because that is something we
- 1:28:12did want to talk about after last week.
- 1:28:16With that,
- 1:28:18hope everybody has a great
- 1:28:19return to the work week tomorrow.
- 1:28:20Yay.
- 1:28:21Um, with that, uh, everybody,
- 1:28:24thank you so much for being here.
- 1:28:25This has been Sunday, Sunday, Sunday night,
- 1:28:28CrossFit talk.
- 1:28:29And we'll be back again next week.
- 1:28:32The original CrossFit Sunday
- 1:28:33night talk show.
- 1:28:34Bye guys.
