Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / #HURDLEMOMENT: Are You Where You Say You Are? The Importance of Being Truly Present
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I want you to ask yourself the question that I've
- 0:02Speaker 1: been asking myself, what are you running by? With the
- 0:06Speaker 1: blinders on fun fact to kick off today's episode. When
- 0:24Speaker 1: I started the podcast at the very end of twenty seventeen,
- 0:27Speaker 1: I originally envisioned it as like the Hurdles of New York,
- 0:31Speaker 1: similarly to Brandon Stanton's Uber Famous Humans of New York.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I had this idea that I would go around and
- 0:38Speaker 1: find the stories of everyday people that were just like me,
- 0:42Speaker 1: leaned into fitness and wellness to become better versions of themselves.
- 0:46Speaker 1: And I still want to do that in some capacity,
- 0:51Speaker 1: but in the meantime, this girl has got a lot
- 0:54Speaker 1: of other things on her to do this anyway. Emily
- 0:58Speaker 1: A body here. I'm a freelance journalist writing everywhere from
- 1:02Speaker 1: GQ to Runners World, and I'm also the creator of
- 1:06Speaker 1: this special show called Hurdle, a wellness focused podcast where
- 1:10Speaker 1: I sit down with inspiring individuals to talk about everything
- 1:13Speaker 1: from their big wins to how they've gotten through some
- 1:15Speaker 1: of life's toughest moments. For Hurdle Moment this week, I
- 1:19Speaker 1: am chatting about a really important moment I had a
- 1:22Speaker 1: few days back running the Miami half marathon. In summary,
- 1:27Speaker 1: it took me about an hour on the course or
- 1:30Speaker 1: so to actually start paying attention to what was going
- 1:34Speaker 1: on around me, to my surroundings. Thanks to a fellow runner,
- 1:38Speaker 1: I was reminded of the importance of being truly presence,
- 1:41Speaker 1: the importance of not just showing up, which is often
- 1:45Speaker 1: the first and very most important step, but also of
- 1:49Speaker 1: opening our eyes to all that is around us to
- 1:51Speaker 1: truly get the most of any given experience. I'll dive
- 1:55Speaker 1: into this a little bit more shortly, but in the meantime,
- 1:58Speaker 1: I'd love for you to let me know what topics
- 2:00Speaker 1: you want me to dive into here on Hurdle Moments.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So what is it that you want to know about?
- 2:05Speaker 1: What are you struggling with? How can I help let
- 2:09Speaker 1: me know by shooting me a message over on Instagram
- 2:11Speaker 1: or Twitter. It's at Hurdle Podcasts or at Emily at
- 2:13Speaker 1: Body and of course always feel free to reach out
- 2:17Speaker 1: to me over at email It's Emilyefcurdle dot us. Before
- 2:21Speaker 1: I get into it today, I want to take a
- 2:23Speaker 1: moment to give some love to my sponsor at Beam. Y'all.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I have the biggest suite tooth period, so that means
- 2:30Speaker 1: that almost every single night I'm hankering for some sort
- 2:34Speaker 1: of dessert. This is where beam dream comes in. Instead
- 2:39Speaker 1: of reaching for a bar of dark chocolate these days,
- 2:41Speaker 1: I am all about the sweet tasting deliciousness and it's
- 2:45Speaker 1: made with organic CaCO and cinnamon, monk fruit, vanilla, and
- 2:49Speaker 1: of course also important compounds for better quality sleep like melatonin, magnesium, elthenine,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and of course they're nanocbd powder. Head on over to
- 2:59Speaker 1: Bean tlc dot com. Again, that's a beamt tlc dot
- 3:04Speaker 1: com and use the code Hurdle for fifteen percent off
- 3:07Speaker 1: your order. Again, that's the code Hurdle for fifteen percent off. Today,
- 3:13Speaker 1: I'm curious about something. I would love it if you
- 3:15Speaker 1: could head on over to the iTunes store and let
- 3:18Speaker 1: me know what Hurdle Moment episode has been your favorite
- 3:22Speaker 1: so far by leaving a review, and while you're there,
- 3:25Speaker 1: rate and subscribe the podcast as well. Again, it's at
- 3:29Speaker 1: Emily Badi at Hurdle Podcast. Let's get to hurdling the
- 3:41Speaker 1: good news. It was a lot less hot and a
- 3:45Speaker 1: lot less humid than I anticipated down in Miami. Now,
- 3:50Speaker 1: the course itself, let me tell you pretty nice. It
- 3:54Speaker 1: was nice to run over that bridge at first, although
- 3:57Speaker 1: I did not love the hill situation, but the rest
- 4:00Speaker 1: of it was pretty flat. I went into the race
- 4:03Speaker 1: the other day after a week of intentional rest thanks
- 4:07Speaker 1: to a cranky hip, which I'm happy to report is
- 4:10Speaker 1: faring much better today than then, and that intentional rest
- 4:16Speaker 1: was paired with a work trip. So, needless to say,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I showed up to tow the starting line, and I
- 4:23Speaker 1: was understanding and okay with the fact that this might
- 4:27Speaker 1: not be my best race. Still I showed up and
- 4:32Speaker 1: felt pressure. I wanted to perform well. I've been running
- 4:38Speaker 1: pretty well recently. It's like that common saying that I
- 4:42Speaker 1: go back to time and time again. You don't work
- 4:46Speaker 1: hard in life to show up and things not to
- 4:48Speaker 1: go as you had hoped or as you had planned.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And so I was definitely in my head. I didn't
- 4:55Speaker 1: want to have a race that I felt like was
- 4:58Speaker 1: disappointing and then pick up my phone after from bag
- 5:01Speaker 1: check and have to tell the world, tell the masses
- 5:04Speaker 1: that I wasn't as awesome as I had hoped to be.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And so I went for it as much as I
- 5:13Speaker 1: felt like I possibly could, and in the process, as
- 5:17Speaker 1: the miles rolled on from the get go. I was
- 5:21Speaker 1: so in my head. I was frustrated at the beginning
- 5:25Speaker 1: because I was in a corral with a lot of
- 5:28Speaker 1: people that typically ran a slower pace than me, and
- 5:32Speaker 1: so for the good first two or so miles, I
- 5:35Speaker 1: was doing a ton of bobbing and weaving, which so
- 5:38Speaker 1: many of you know can be such an energy suck.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Before I knew it, I was already approaching mile eight.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I was on what I want to say, was Washington
- 5:49Speaker 1: heading north. Forgive me, I'm not stellar with Miami geography,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and I hear the guy next to me say something
- 5:56Speaker 1: you good. Just like that that moment, I felt shook.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I felt unsure. I realized that I literally hadn't been
- 6:07Speaker 1: paying attention to anything truly that was happening around me.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I was soaking in the palm trees and some of
- 6:14Speaker 1: the views, but I wasn't truly present. I wasn't paying attention.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And what's the point of traveling to run a race
- 6:24Speaker 1: or going anywhere if you're not really willing to soak
- 6:27Speaker 1: in the thing that is the reason why you're there
- 6:30Speaker 1: in the first place. I knew I wasn't going into
- 6:33Speaker 1: this experience to get some stellar time, But why was
- 6:37Speaker 1: I so wrapped up in these numbers. Why was I
- 6:40Speaker 1: so concerned at the time of what maybe other people
- 6:44Speaker 1: would think. It's a big metaphor for life, right. You know,
- 6:48Speaker 1: we're often so worried about all of the little details.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Sometimes we get wrapped up in the smallest things, the
- 6:56Speaker 1: little things that we forget to truly enjoy the moment.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's funny, you know. A few months ago, I made
- 7:03Speaker 1: the choice to mostly stop walking around New York City
- 7:06Speaker 1: commuting on my phone. I decided to stop staring down
- 7:11Speaker 1: and start looking up. At first, this small pledge to
- 7:16Speaker 1: myself was in an effort to just meet more people,
- 7:19Speaker 1: to be more open to whatever it is that's really
- 7:23Speaker 1: going on in real life. Because until I had this
- 7:27Speaker 1: little conversation, this pep talk with myself about the importance
- 7:30Speaker 1: of showing up, of being present, I realized that I
- 7:33Speaker 1: wasn't embracing the magic of this great place that I
- 7:36Speaker 1: spend so much of my time. Think about it this way,
- 7:39Speaker 1: What if someone's special just happened to be walking by
- 7:42Speaker 1: you at any given moment. Maybe I was sitting next
- 7:46Speaker 1: to someone that could have been my husband on the subway,
- 7:49Speaker 1: but I was so wrapped up in a tweet or
- 7:52Speaker 1: an Instagram or an email, and God, that's not what
- 7:56Speaker 1: life's about, is it. That's not how I wanted to
- 7:59Speaker 1: live my life. That's not how I want to live
- 8:02Speaker 1: my life. And as appreciative as I am for all
- 8:07Speaker 1: of you, I kind of had the same realization about
- 8:10Speaker 1: handling social media as well. I want to be as
- 8:14Speaker 1: available to all of you as possible, but I always
- 8:18Speaker 1: want to be conscious of the real of my real relationships,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and so I committed to myself that I would make
- 8:27Speaker 1: sure that I was spending enough quality time with the
- 8:31Speaker 1: people that matter to me, my relationships in real life,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and conscious of how much time I was investing and
- 8:38Speaker 1: those that I might not know so well. After that
- 8:41Speaker 1: moment on the course, when he asked me if I
- 8:43Speaker 1: was good, and I shook myself to being more present,
- 8:48Speaker 1: I looked back at him and I kind of came
- 8:50Speaker 1: to and I offered him my fist, almost in solidarity,
- 8:55Speaker 1: and I looked at him and I smiled, and I said,
- 8:58Speaker 1: we're good. In that moment, that special moments, that's when
- 9:02Speaker 1: I started to really enjoy what was happening around me,
- 9:06Speaker 1: to notice things like the spectators and the people and
- 9:10Speaker 1: the other runners that were out there giving it all
- 9:13Speaker 1: that they had. From that moment forward, I was really
- 9:17Speaker 1: being my best self, understanding that that version of me
- 9:22Speaker 1: that comes when I am willing to entirely and completely
- 9:27Speaker 1: show up in a situation. I want you to ask
- 9:30Speaker 1: yourself the question that I've been asking myself. What are
- 9:35Speaker 1: you running by with the bhinders on What are you
- 9:38Speaker 1: either consciously or not consciously, stopping yourself from reaping the
- 9:43Speaker 1: full experience of because we're so wrapped up in something else.
- 9:47Speaker 1: You know, I love the word opportunity, and that's because
- 9:50Speaker 1: it is true. There is so much opportunity out there
- 9:53Speaker 1: for us if we simply truly open our eyes and
- 9:56Speaker 1: look around. And something tells me that I am sure
- 10:00Speaker 1: only not the only person who wants to really embrace
- 10:04Speaker 1: that opportunity. At Hurdle Podcast at Emily Abadi another Hurdle conquered.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time,
