- 0:00Speaker 1: The guys resume game action Saturday at Gamble, when Ryan
- 0:04Speaker 1: calt Brenner and the Creighton Blue Jays come to stores.
- 0:07Speaker 1: A hard utter group count down to tip off begins.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Our coverage at eleven thirty. Tip off shortly after twelve
- 0:12Speaker 1: noon here along the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity Network app,
- 0:16Speaker 1: andavarsityetwork dot com. Mike Chrispino rejoined by Dan Hurley, coach.
- 0:21Speaker 1: This is kind of a bye week. You only play
- 0:23Speaker 1: once this week. Tell us about your schedule, how you
- 0:26Speaker 1: plan your day and your days and what you want
- 0:30Speaker 1: to accomplish day to day going into a week where
- 0:33Speaker 1: you play a Saturday noon game and don't have to
- 0:36Speaker 1: play during the first five days of the week.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, So you know, we're fortunate because we're still on break.
- 0:44Speaker 2: So that allows you to, you know, have close to
- 0:49Speaker 2: as much access as you want, you know, with the players,
- 0:53Speaker 2: they're not in classes, you're not dealing with study hall,
- 0:57Speaker 2: you know, or class schedules. So and then knowing you've
- 1:00Speaker 2: got a noon game, well, just as the week goes
- 1:03Speaker 2: on here, we gave them, you know, we gave them
- 1:06Speaker 2: two days off because we had to, you know, based
- 1:10Speaker 2: on what the upcoming schedule looks like, so they had
- 1:14Speaker 2: to have a mandatory two days off, so they were
- 1:18Speaker 2: off Sunday into Monday. You know, so Tuesday's practice was
- 1:23Speaker 2: obviously a little bit sloppy. Two days off is never
- 1:26Speaker 2: good for your team in terms of the level of play.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Not everyone, I think got in the gym voluntarily maybe
- 1:35Speaker 2: yesterday and it looked like it. So you know what
- 1:40Speaker 2: we're able to do, though, is do multiple sessions during
- 1:44Speaker 2: the day. We were trying to get their clocks ready
- 1:47Speaker 2: for a noon tip. So we'll move the practices up,
- 1:51Speaker 2: you know, fifteen to twenty minutes each day, so you know,
- 1:54Speaker 2: today we you know, today practice at eleven, and we'll
- 1:57Speaker 2: move it up fifteen to twenty minutes every day so
- 2:00Speaker 2: that as we get the Friday, you know, these guys
- 2:03Speaker 2: will be used to getting up at six point thirty
- 2:05Speaker 2: in the morning, seven o'clock in the morning by doing
- 2:09Speaker 2: the live practice early. So all the five on five,
- 2:13Speaker 2: the four on four, the live play happens in that
- 2:16Speaker 2: that kind of morning slot to prepare them for a
- 2:19Speaker 2: noon tip. Because noon tips they're on top of you
- 2:23Speaker 2: before you even know it. It's I don't love noon
- 2:26Speaker 2: tips at four o'clock. Would be my favorite if I
- 2:29Speaker 2: had a because I don't love wait until seven o'clock either.
- 2:33Speaker 2: So we'll bring him in for you know what. We'll
- 2:35Speaker 2: bring him in for that live practice, you know, get
- 2:38Speaker 2: that work done. We'll then send them to the weight room,
- 2:42Speaker 2: give them, you know, a break to maybe grab some
- 2:45Speaker 2: to eat, and then we'll bring them back in for
- 2:48Speaker 2: shooting practice, competitive shooting drills that are time so pressure
- 2:52Speaker 2: shooting drills, and then we will uh, we'll walk through
- 2:56Speaker 2: the opponents out unders their favorite man sets and do
- 3:01Speaker 2: any film work in the afternoon or evening. So we're
- 3:05Speaker 2: able to get multiple sessions of work with the players
- 3:09Speaker 2: in during break, which is nice.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah, speaking of getting back in the gym, one of
- 3:13Speaker 1: the stories last week was the Villanova game where the
- 3:16Speaker 1: Huskies had multiple chances to win on the road against
- 3:20Speaker 1: another rising team in the conference. A couple of three
- 3:24Speaker 1: possessions in the last twenty thirty seconds, couldn't get a bucket,
- 3:27Speaker 1: finally got to the line, Alex Caravan gets a chance,
- 3:31Speaker 1: can't make the free throws, and Alex being the guy
- 3:34Speaker 1: that he is, a great leader that he is and
- 3:37Speaker 1: the quality person he is, he was telling me there
- 3:40Speaker 1: before the previous Georgetown game that he went back to
- 3:44Speaker 1: campus and got in the gym after we had a
- 3:47Speaker 1: late night getting back that night. And I was impressed
- 3:50Speaker 1: by that, and I said, well, how many would you
- 3:53Speaker 1: do shoot free throws? He said, oh yeah, I stayed
- 3:55Speaker 1: till I made one hundred. And I'm like, wow, that
- 3:59Speaker 1: was pretty damn pressure.
- 4:00Speaker 2: But I kinda say, yeah, well, I mean, unfortunately for Alex,
- 4:04Speaker 2: you know, you can't simulate, you know, the situation that
- 4:09Speaker 2: he found himself in. I mean, you could literally go
- 4:11Speaker 2: your whole career and never be in that situation. Down
- 4:14Speaker 2: one with three seconds to go on the road. And
- 4:17Speaker 2: I think, you know what, you know, what hurts maybe
- 4:20Speaker 2: people like Alex, you know, more than other players, is
- 4:23Speaker 2: like Alex, uh, you know, the one he is a perfectionist.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Number two, he cares so much about Yukon and winning, uh,
- 4:32Speaker 2: you know, and he's so he's the type of person
- 4:34Speaker 2: that always puts enormous pressure on himself to come through
- 4:38Speaker 2: for the front of the uniform. So uh, if he
- 4:42Speaker 2: was more of a selfish kind of you know, a
- 4:45Speaker 2: selfish dumby, he might have he would have been a
- 4:48Speaker 2: lot better off. He probably wouldn't have felt much of
- 4:50Speaker 2: the pressure, but he understood the situation. But yeah, there's
- 4:54Speaker 2: no way of simulating that, you know, for him. He h,
- 5:01Speaker 2: He's been a clutch player his whole career. You're gonna
- 5:04Speaker 2: have moments like that in your professional life and your
- 5:07Speaker 2: personal life where you face adversity and your face struggle
- 5:12Speaker 2: and you have to just kind of own a bad moment.
- 5:14Speaker 2: And you know, he responded, you know, like like one
- 5:18Speaker 2: of the best players ever to play at Yukon, you know,
- 5:21Speaker 2: with the way he played at Georgetown. And you know,
- 5:24Speaker 2: I think, yeah, we did a good job I think
- 5:27Speaker 2: of you know, supporting him, but we didn't overdo it.
- 5:31Speaker 2: You know, you don't want to talk like too much
- 5:34Speaker 2: about it, you know. Yeah, if you're talking like too
- 5:37Speaker 2: much about it, you know, it's like the player saying
- 5:40Speaker 2: to himself, like, man, it must have been really bad
- 5:43Speaker 2: if they just keep bringing it up and up and up.
- 5:45Speaker 2: So you know, we said our words to him about
- 5:48Speaker 2: how we felt and how we needed to move on
- 5:50Speaker 2: from it. You know, he's achieved so much incredible success.
- 5:56Speaker 2: You know, you got to take the good with the bad.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Sometimes he's a storybook run and he's really dealt with
- 6:05Speaker 2: his first personal adversity in his college career and it
- 6:08Speaker 2: took to his junior year.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Yeah, tell you what, That's what the great ones do.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Though.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I remember the story a long time ago. I was
- 6:14Speaker 1: with doing Saint John's at the time, and Chris Mullen
- 6:17Speaker 1: got the keys from Lou Carnaseca went to the gym
- 6:21Speaker 1: after a game and stayed in there all damn night
- 6:24Speaker 1: shooting free throws. So, I mean, that's what guys like
- 6:27Speaker 1: this do. I mean, Alex Caravan, since he's got here,
- 6:30Speaker 1: If I'm right on these numbers, Dan, the team is
- 6:33Speaker 1: eighty one and fifteen in the last two and a
- 6:35Speaker 1: half years. I mean, it's astounding the success that he
- 6:40Speaker 1: has had. Obviously, what Yukon has done, you know, he
- 6:43Speaker 1: was a preseason All American a lot of times those
- 6:45Speaker 1: preseason things. I don't know who makes him up or whatever.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I thought that was a good call because a guy
- 6:51Speaker 1: like him is so meaningful to a franchise, a program,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and when he's doing his thing and he's doing it well,
- 6:58Speaker 1: he kind of lifts the tide up, doesn't he.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah, he makes everyone better around him. He's uh, you know,
- 7:05Speaker 2: he's a clutch player. He's very smart, you know, he
- 7:09Speaker 2: understands what every position's responsibilities are going into each and
- 7:14Speaker 2: every game, so he's able to just do so much
- 7:17Speaker 2: problem solving out there. And then obviously the production and
- 7:23Speaker 2: the efficiency UH and and the winning you know all
- 7:27Speaker 2: that I know it's and the work ethic and the
- 7:30Speaker 2: character and just all those things. It's rare you get
- 7:35Speaker 2: a chance to uh to coach a player that you
- 7:39Speaker 2: know really has uh nothing that you could complain about.
- 7:46Speaker 1: An example to coach setting an example that's huge, isn't it.
- 7:52Speaker 2: I Mean it's just in today's with with with with
- 7:56Speaker 2: you know, with the portal, with n I L, with
- 7:59Speaker 2: early entry in NBA, with what they see from the
- 8:02Speaker 2: NBA that gets modeled sometimes, which isn't always the best things.
- 8:08Speaker 2: To get a chance to coach a player like him,
- 8:11Speaker 2: it's just, you know, when your best player carries himself
- 8:14Speaker 2: the way Alex does, you got a chance to have
- 8:17Speaker 2: a successful season.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And you Kahn's been doing that, that's for sure. Back
- 8:21Speaker 1: in a moment, we'll talk GAMP because the Huskies are
- 8:24Speaker 1: back in there for a noon game with Creton this
- 8:26Speaker 1: coming Saturday. This is the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show
- 8:30Speaker 1: on Liar Field
