Latest / Recovering Out Loud / 13th Stepping: The Predatory Behaviour Recovery Won't Talk About
Transcript
- 0:00So today I want to talk about something that doesn't really
- 0:02get a lot of attention in the recovery community, and that is
- 0:05this sort of predatorial behavior for men and women.
- 0:09Let's be honest, maybe some women somewhere, mostly men
- 0:12though. And I'm going to talk from a
- 0:13male perspective here, obviously.
- 0:15So I'm going to give some information, but also a little
- 0:18bit of by my thoughts on it and and my experience with seeing
- 0:2213th stepping in the rooms of recovery in rehab.
- 0:26And I'm going to explain what 13 stepping is.
- 0:28I'm going to explain what it's about, how you should look for
- 0:32it, why you shouldn't fucking do it for sure, because I'm going
- 0:35to get into it. For some people, recovery
- 0:38spaces, meetings, rehabs are the most vulnerable places.
- 0:42They're they're dangerous environments and they've ever
- 0:45been in. And so they come from a
- 0:47dangerous environment where they're experiencing predatorial
- 0:51behavior and harassment beforehand in addiction in crack
- 0:55dens and in trap houses. And then they go to rehab or
- 1:00recovery spaces and it, it feels worse sometimes or it feels just
- 1:03as predatorial and all these past traumas and shames shame
- 1:07can can get sparked up. And it's a tough place to be.
- 1:10I want to feel safe in my recovery community.
- 1:13I want to feel safe in my environment.
- 1:15I want to feel safe in rehab because I'm here to heal and
- 1:17we're all here to heal. We all have one primary purpose
- 1:20and that is to stay sober and help the next addict alcoholic
- 1:24who's still suffering. So I'm going to talk about
- 1:26manipulation, power dynamics, and what's known as 13 stepping
- 1:30in recovery. Recovery isn't just about
- 1:32staying sober, it's about staying safe.
- 1:34So first, what is 13 stepping? In recovery culture, 13 stepping
- 1:39refers to people with more time usually or experience pursuing
- 1:44romantic or sexual relationships with newcomers, with new people.
- 1:49It often involves a power imbalance, not just attraction.
- 1:52So there's manipulation tactics involved.
- 1:54And it can be a very dangerous place for a lot of women, men
- 1:59too, but mostly women who are, who are new and coming in and
- 2:02scared. And they see somebody that has
- 2:05what they want in terms of sobriety and they might be a
- 2:07good looking put together guy and, and now they're pursuing
- 2:10them with manipulation tactics. The guy is and and it's it's it
- 2:14bothers me and that's why I wanted to do this episode
- 2:16because I've seen it, the groups I've been involved in over the
- 2:19years. I don't see it a lot, but if I
- 2:21do see it, I stop that shit right away.
- 2:24I always steer very clear of new women in recovery.
- 2:29I steer clear of women in recovery in general, but I
- 2:33definitely stay clear from newcomers who are women.
- 2:35I stick around the guys. I try to help out the new guys
- 2:38that are coming in and that's how I can be of service.
- 2:41This is how I watch for 13th stepping in recovery.
- 2:45Why is it a problem? Well, I mean, it's pretty
- 2:47obvious, but newcomers are emotionally raw, vulnerable, and
- 2:51seeking stability. We're looking for help, we're
- 2:54looking for stability, we're looking for calm and peace.
- 2:59And they may confuse attention with care, intensity with
- 3:04connection, guidance with trustworthiness.
- 3:06So a lot of people look trustworthy in recovery.
- 3:09I'm going to trust this guy because he is reaching out his
- 3:12hand to help me. Meanwhile, the motive is very
- 3:15much in the opposite direction, in a sexual or predatorial way.
- 3:20And it's not always obvious too. It doesn't look predatory at
- 3:22first. It looks like, hey, let me help
- 3:24you, I'm going to help you get through this.
- 3:26And we're taught in recovery to look for people that have what
- 3:29we want. I always say to people, if
- 3:32you're new, stick with the same sex.
- 3:34Whatever you identify with, stick with that sex.
- 3:37And I was always taught, now this might be controversial, but
- 3:40I was taught if you are gay or homosexual, you stick with the
- 3:44women. That might get confusing, that
- 3:47might get blurred lines. So all I'm going to say is stick
- 3:50with the sex that you are identify with.
- 3:55So I want you to think about this.
- 3:56Was there ever a time in early recovery where you trusted
- 4:00someone because they had more time sober?
- 4:03I know that I did. It happened to me.
- 4:05There was one time I was at a recovery meeting and a woman
- 4:08came up to me. She was obviously under the
- 4:10influence and she asked me to sponsor her.
- 4:12It was very uncomfortable, it was very awkward, but I just
- 4:14calmly said, Oh no, let me introduce you to some of the
- 4:17women I know, some of the young women that I know that can help
- 4:19you. This is something that I try to
- 4:21do today, direct them in the way of other women.
- 4:27So when it comes to rehab, it creates a unique environment
- 4:30where we have, we're isolated from the outside world.
- 4:32We get very strong trauma bonds in connection with the people
- 4:36that were around that we're spending every day and every
- 4:38minute of every second eating meals with recovery groups.
- 4:42We're spending a lot of time with these people.
- 4:43You get some really strong relationships in rehab.
- 4:46So people in recovery are not automatically healthy.
- 4:49There's a lot of old behaviors and old ideas that get cropped
- 4:52up when we come into rehab, and we tend to act on them because
- 4:56there's nothing else to do in rehab.
- 4:58Being sober doesn't automatically equal being
- 5:01emotionally regulated. We know that, you know that.
- 5:03I know that some people carry manipulation patterns, control
- 5:07dynamics, unresolved trauma. They bring that with them into
- 5:10rehab, into recovery spaces, and they project it onto the world,
- 5:13onto you. And that can be dangerous, It
- 5:15can be unhealthy. It can be scary really.
- 5:19Another thing that happens is you'll see people that are maybe
- 5:21there for their 4th, 5th, 6th time in rehab or in, you know,
- 5:25coming back from relapse 456 times.
- 5:27They know the system, they know what to say, they know how to
- 5:31look good and be Mr. Recovery and Mr. Rehab and check all the
- 5:35boxes and they know how to gain trust quickly.
- 5:37They're good at manipulating because let's be honest, in
- 5:40addiction, this skill is probably the most widely used as
- 5:43manipulation. I manipulate my family to keep
- 5:46using and drinking. I manipulate my drug dealer to
- 5:48give me more drugs without me having to give up more money
- 5:50because I don't have the money. There's a lot this skill is
- 5:53sharpened in in addiction. Just because someone knows
- 5:57recovery language doesn't mean they're living recovery
- 6:00principles. This is a common thing that we
- 6:03see in recovery spaces where people can talk, to talk all day
- 6:06and they can quote the book and they look very healthy.
- 6:08But when they leave the meeting, they're screaming at old women
- 6:11and they're flipping people off and they're cutting people off
- 6:13in traffic and they're just miserable to be around.
- 6:16They're not good people. They're not acting on good
- 6:18principles. I shouldn't say not good people.
- 6:20They're not acting like good people.
- 6:22They're not acting on recovery, spiritual principles, how
- 6:29manipulation shows up. So some common patterns of a
- 6:36manipulation is fast emotional bonding.
- 6:38So trauma bonding. In other words, we're bonding on
- 6:42past traumas. I've been through that, you've
- 6:44been through that too. That was tough.
- 6:46How did you get through it? We have a, we create a bond on
- 6:49our past traumas and our past experiences.
- 6:52Love bombing intense attention early.
- 6:55I always say this, but we come into rehab, we come into
- 6:57recovery and you take away my medicine, I'm going to look for
- 7:00other things to fill that God sized hole that I have deep
- 7:02inside me. What's a better way than to fill
- 7:05it with a person? To fill it with sex?
- 7:07This is what happens when people come into early recovery.
- 7:09They look for new things to use and abuse and get high from.
- 7:14I can get high from other people's attention.
- 7:16I can get high if I'm people pleasing and I have codependency
- 7:20issues, which a lot of us do when we come in here.
- 7:22That person that I relate to so much can fill that hole and make
- 7:26me feel whole, make me feel better.
- 7:29They can be my drug. I can snort them.
- 7:32So creating dependency, you need me to stay sober.
- 7:35This is a manipulation tactic. I can help you stay sober and
- 7:38without me, you're not going to stay sober.
- 7:40Isolating from others. They don't understand you like I
- 7:43do. This is another tactic.
- 7:45Blurring boundaries. This is a dangerous one,
- 7:47emotional, physical, controlling.
- 7:49So there's no boundaries. There's, you know, they're
- 7:52manipulating, making you think that things are OK, you're safe.
- 7:55Meanwhile, you're they're crossing every boundary that you
- 7:57have. And it's hard to to create a
- 8:00boundary in early recovery. Some red flags to look for,
- 8:03moving too fast, secrets or private communication.
- 8:07How many people in rehab have seen those rehab relationships?
- 8:11I Lord knows I've seen so many of them where two people are
- 8:13just hanging out a little bit too much and they're being
- 8:15secretive and they're doing their own thing.
- 8:17This is fucking dangerous in recovery ice.
- 8:20It creates isolation. And then if that person relapses
- 8:22and then you've made that person your higher power, what now?
- 8:26What Now? That person is relapsed.
- 8:28I'm going to probably relapse because I don't know who to lean
- 8:31on. I don't know who to trust.
- 8:32I don't have a recovery community.
- 8:33I only had this one person. It's dangerous.
- 8:35Don't make anybody your higher power.
- 8:37Another red flag is making you feel chosen or special.
- 8:40This sounds very culty, but it's this classic manipulation,
- 8:43one-on-one and undermining staff or other supports.
- 8:47Have you ever ignored a red flag in your recovery relationships
- 8:51because you didn't want to lose that connection?
- 8:53You didn't want to offend the person, You didn't want to feel
- 8:55bad? You might have a relationship
- 8:56right now that is built on manipulation and built on
- 9:00predatorial behavior and it, you know, you can get out of it,
- 9:03right? But it's am I afraid to say
- 9:06something that I'm going to lose this person and is this
- 9:09relationship healthy for me? Only you can decide that.
- 9:12So what are some of the consequences of this
- 9:14manipulation in these relationships?
- 9:15These really tight knit bonds and early recovery, especially
- 9:18opposite sex emotional consequences are confusion,
- 9:21shame, attachment, trauma. Recovery consequences are
- 9:25relapse. Risk increases for sure.
- 9:28Focus shifts from recovery to relationship.
- 9:30I always say this, if you put anything before your recovery on
- 9:34the priority list, if recovery is not at the top of that list,
- 9:37if you put anything above that, you will relapse.
- 9:40It's only a matter of time. When I first came back, I put my
- 9:43wedding above my recovery. I put my marriage above my
- 9:46recovery. And what happened?
- 9:48Well overtime I was spending more energy on trying to perfect
- 9:52my marriage and my relationship that my recovery started to
- 9:55fall. I started to pick my marriage
- 9:57over my wife. To a lot of people that might
- 10:00sound fucked up and selfish. Well how are you going to put
- 10:02your wife before below your recovery?
- 10:05Trust me, I've been doing this long enough to know that if you
- 10:08put if I put anything before my recovery, I will lose everything
- 10:13else. If I put recovery at the top of
- 10:15my priority list, I will be able to enjoy all those things to the
- 10:19fullest extent because I will be a healthy, recovered person.
- 10:23I will be the best version of myself if I put my recovery
- 10:27first. I've learned that time and time
- 10:28again. So today, my recovery comes
- 10:31first in my priority list. It doesn't mean I neglect my
- 10:33wife and choose recovery meetings or recovery over her,
- 10:37recovery friends over her. It just means that First things
- 10:40first, I have to put God first. I have to put my recovery first.
- 10:44Those are synonymous for me. So another way this power
- 10:47imbalance can escalate in this manipulation, this relationship,
- 10:50in this 13th stepping is emotional manipulation, control.
- 10:54The person has control over you and power, and in some cases
- 10:57exploitation. They can exploit you to do
- 10:59things for them because they hold the power.
- 11:02The hard truth of all this is some people relapse because of
- 11:05these dynamics and they don't even notice that they're in it.
- 11:08Early recovery is about rebuilding yourself, not
- 11:10attaching yourself to someone else to feel OK.
- 11:13That is so important. Focus on yourself.
- 11:15Be selfish in the way that don't be selfish in the world, but be
- 11:19selfish in the way that you're going to put your recovery
- 11:22program first. You're not going to think of
- 11:24yourself all the time, but you're going to put your
- 11:26recovery 1st until at least you get some time where you can
- 11:30start being of service more to other people.
- 11:33It's a funny paradox though. Service, because service in
- 11:36helping others benefits my recovery today.
- 11:39It benefits my ability to get out of myself.
- 11:42And it's sort of this weird paradox where when I'm helping
- 11:44somebody else, I'm less selfish, but I'm also more selfish in
- 11:48that I'm putting my recovery first by helping someone else
- 11:51through their recovery. It's a weird paradox that you
- 11:53can only experience. I can't explain it to you.
- 11:56So how do I protect myself from 13 stepping or how do I protect
- 11:59someone else? Maybe no major relationships in
- 12:02early recovery. You hear that a lot.
- 12:03I did a whole episode with Caitlin about codependency and
- 12:06relationships and recovery. Just try to focus your first
- 12:09year on yourself. You, the relationships will
- 12:12come, but you really don't have a lot to offer.
- 12:15I didn't have a lot to offer in my first year of recovery.
- 12:17I came in with my marriage, so that's different.
- 12:19I couldn't just run away from my marriage.
- 12:23I had to focus on that. But I put my recovery program
- 12:26first always, or at least I try to.
- 12:28I work on that every single day. I'm not perfect, right?
- 12:31We're talking about progress, not perfection here.
- 12:33So generally, people suggest it takes six months to a year to
- 12:36just focus on yourself, build yourself esteem, build your
- 12:39recovery program, build your recovery skills, your spiritual
- 12:43principles before you can bring anything into another
- 12:47relationship. Also, when you come in, you're
- 12:51not aware of these red flags. When I came into recovery I'm
- 12:54not 100% self aware, I'm not aware of the manipulation
- 12:59tactics of somebody else so it's best just to avoid them all
- 13:01together. I've never and I I can honestly
- 13:05say this, I've never in my life seen a rehab relationship work
- 13:08out where both people stay sober and don't relapse and I usually
- 13:13it ends in the ultimate price in death.
- 13:16And that's sad to say, but it's true it I've never seen a rehab
- 13:21relationship or early recovery relationship Work out some
- 13:25practical boundaries here. So keeping your relationships
- 13:27peer based, not dependent. Avoid secrecy.
- 13:31I always say secrets. Keep a sick.
- 13:32You're only as sick as your secrets.
- 13:35Staying connected to multiple supports, not just one person.
- 13:38Don't put all your recovery in one person.
- 13:40Get a mentor, get a sponsor, whatever that looks like for
- 13:43you. Trust structure, not
- 13:45individuals. So trust the process, not any
- 13:47human person. Humans are finite.
- 13:50The program, the power, God, whatever you want to call it.
- 13:53The universe spirit is infinite. Put your trust in that.
- 13:58Slow everything down. So if it feels intense, pause.
- 14:02Speak up. If something feels off, say
- 14:05something to staff or trusted support.
- 14:07Say something to A say something to a tenured member of your
- 14:13group. If you see some behavior that is
- 14:15predatorial or 13 stepping or say something, speak up.
- 14:19Tell somebody about it. Safety in recovery isn't just
- 14:23about substances. It's about who you let close to
- 14:26you, who you let in. Ask yourself this question.
- 14:29Where do I need to get stronger boundaries in my life right now?
- 14:33Where do I need stronger boundaries in my life right now?
- 14:40So next, for people with more time, let's talk about
- 14:43accountability here. You, whether you realize it or
- 14:47not, you have influence over other people, over others in
- 14:51recovery. People look up to you.
- 14:53I know we're not supposed to put anyone on a pedestal in
- 14:55recovery, but there are a lot of men in my life in recovery that
- 14:59I put on a pedestal I look up to.
- 15:01I want to be like them. I don't.
- 15:03I want what they have in their spiritual principles, their
- 15:06spiritual connection, their program.
- 15:08I don't want their cars. I don't want their lives.
- 15:10I want their principles. I want to act the way they are.
- 15:15I want to be the kind of man that they are.
- 15:18I look up to them and if I want what they have, I got to do what
- 15:21they did. We have a responsibility as
- 15:23people with time, with months, with years that have been in
- 15:27this program for a long time, in recovery for a long time.
- 15:29We have a responsibility to protect the newcomer.
- 15:32I firmly believe that. Don't pursue them, get them help
- 15:36that they need. If you see a new female, you're
- 15:38a male coming in. Guide them.
- 15:39Like I said to a female that has a strong recovery program.
- 15:43I've done that many times. You could save their life.
- 15:46Be aware of the power imbalance that exists in rehab, in
- 15:50recovery. Real recovery includes integrity
- 15:53in relationships, doing the right thing when nobody is
- 15:55watching. So let's reframe the experience.
- 15:59Important nuance here is that this is not about blaming the
- 16:03person who experienced it. It's vulnerability was
- 16:06exploited, not a weakness, but a state.
- 16:09The growth angle here is awareness turns into boundaries,
- 16:13turns into stronger recovery. So let's just be aware of this
- 16:16behavior. It's it could be happening in
- 16:18your group. Be pay more attention, be more
- 16:21open to it. You may save someone's life.
- 16:23You may get somebody helps get somebody sober by preventing
- 16:28this behavior, this 13 stepping, this uncomfortable predatorial
- 16:32touching or harassment. Some people don't want to get
- 16:36hugged and we go and hug them anyways.
- 16:38Be aware of that. Ask somebody before you touch
- 16:42them, before you hug them, before you talk to them even.
- 16:45Do you feel safe right now? Do you feel safe in this group?
- 16:47Is there anything I can do to help?
- 16:49We need to take more responsibility for the new
- 16:52people coming in so that they can feel safe in recovery and
- 16:56early recovery. Remember how hard it was coming
- 16:58in and how vulnerable and how naked you felt walking into
- 17:01recovery, how dangerous it felt. Be aware of that.
- 17:05Help somebody else through it. It's not easy, but it is simple.
- 17:09If you're new in recovery, I want you to hear this very
- 17:11clearly or you're coming back. You deserve safety.
- 17:16I was made felt. I was made felt safe in early
- 17:19recovery when I went into my groups.
- 17:21If you're a part of a group or recovery community that you
- 17:24don't feel safe in, fucking leave.
- 17:26There's tons of groups in the city, in every city.
- 17:29There's online meetings. There's tons of recovery
- 17:32communities that are will make you feel safe.
- 17:34I've been a part of so many of them.
- 17:36You don't need to stay because you think that's the only
- 17:39grouper has good leave. If it's uncomfortable, find a
- 17:42new group. Tell somebody about how you're
- 17:44feeling. Maybe you're overthinking it,
- 17:46maybe that person does it. You don't need to be around that
- 17:49person. Speak up, talk about it.
- 17:52You deserve respect, and you deserve the space to figure out
- 17:57who you are without someone else shaping that for you.
- 18:01You deserve the space to figure out who you are in recovery
- 18:04without somebody else telling you or shaping it for you.
- 18:08Recovery is about finding yourself, not losing yourself in
- 18:11someone else. I can't stress this enough.
- 18:13If you're in early recovery, just focus on yourself, man.
- 18:15Just the relationships will come.
- 18:18The the men will come, the women will come.
- 18:20The relationship will come. When you are spiritually fit,
- 18:23when you are on firm spiritual ground, when you are confident
- 18:27in yourself and your recovery abilities, it will come.
- 18:30Maybe you don't need to look for it right now.
- 18:32Maybe this time is best spent working on yourself, helping new
- 18:36men through if you're a man, and helping new women through if
- 18:39you're a woman. Nobody deserves to feel like
- 18:42they're being pursued or attacked or harmed or harassed
- 18:47in any way in early recovery. This is needs to be a safe space
- 18:50and you can create that safe space for somebody else,
- 18:54especially if you've been around for a while.
- 18:56Go out of your way, reach out your hand, create that safe
- 19:00environment. If you see 13th stepping going
- 19:02on, please for the love of God, end it.
- 19:05Step up to the plate. Tell that person to stop doing
- 19:08it. Tell somebody else if you're
- 19:09uncomfortable with that, that has more time than you and just
- 19:13be of service. How can I be of service?
- 19:16This is so important. A lot of women and men go back
- 19:19out because they are 13th steps because they are made to feel
- 19:24not safe in recovery. Why would I, if I'm new in
- 19:27recovery, why would I go into a recovery space where I'm feeling
- 19:30harassed, pursued, 13th stepped, when I could just go back out
- 19:35and use drugs and it'd be a lot easier because this environment
- 19:37is not safe. I felt safer in my home doing
- 19:40cocaine and meth. Think about that.
- 19:42Let's get together and create a safe environment for everybody
- 19:46no matter what. Race, creed, color, religion,
- 19:49fucking status, economic status doesn't matter.
- 19:53We are all here for one problem and we are all here to pursue
- 19:58one solution that is contented sobriety.
