- 0:06Warrior of the Wasteland, the Ayatollah of Rock and Roller! The offer is closed.
- 0:14Too late for deals? No deals. I want to drive the truck.
- 0:18Why? Quite a big change of heart. Believe me, I haven't got a choice.
- 0:23And how do you think you'd do it? I mean, look at you. You couldn't even drive a wheelchair.
- 0:28You should look at yourself, Max. You're a mess. Come on, cut the crap.
- 0:34On the best chance you've got.
- 0:35Music.
- 0:45I can't stop laughing i'm
- 0:49actually continuing guys the podcast the last
- 0:52one i'm still laughing for absolutely no reason he's super well apparently yeah
- 0:59yeah hi on life yeah all right guys we're here to talk a film i remember seeing at showtime,
- 1:10a cable company i saw in 83 i believe this is my first introduction to mad max
- 1:18was road warrior because we know it's viewed as world warrior we didn't realize
- 1:23mad max was a film really Now Mad Max eventually did well,
- 1:27but again, it didn't find its core audience right off the start.
- 1:32And it was just getting released on video, I believe in the States.
- 1:36So we didn't know that this was a Mad Max 2 or if there was even a Mad Max 1.
- 1:42So that's why they changed it just to the World Warrior.
- 1:46Like most Mad Max films, they all play like a single one-off film anyway.
- 1:51Yeah, standalones anyway, yeah.
- 1:53Yeah. So George Miller's back. I didn't give a shout out to a young producer named Brian Kennedy.
- 2:00He produced both these films and he was right-hand man of George Miller there.
- 2:06Sadly, died at the age of 33 in a helicopter crash.
- 2:11So yeah, we never got to see what other wonderful projects he could have brought to the table.
- 2:16Yeah. But yeah, I just want to give him a quick shout out there before I forget. So there you go.
- 2:22Now in this one, Mad Max has 16 lines of dialogue.
- 2:26But, you know, it works because that's who his character is.
- 2:30And whenever he does speak, you're sort of hanging on his words.
- 2:33So it totally works for me. No, I mean, yeah, he's a drifter.
- 2:38So he's not going to make conversation. That's not what he's about.
- 2:42The bad match we knew in the beginning of the original one, he was a talker
- 2:46and a family man. Well, that's been taken from him. Yes.
- 2:50Yeah. This is who we get. On hinge to Max.
- 2:53Yeah. Yep, and again, reflecting back onto the Man with No Name trilogy of Cleanius
- 2:57Wood. Cleanius Wood's the exact same way.
- 3:00Totally. This film cost 10 times the budget of the original.
- 3:04This one cost a little over $3 million.
- 3:07Big hit for him, $24 million and growing. The movie's still beloved today.
- 3:12A lot of people do believe that The Road Warrior is the best of all of them,
- 3:16including the wonderful, wonderful Fury Road, which I think is pretty much a
- 3:20masterpiece in filmmaking.
- 3:21Making, we're still going to talk about Furiosa too, but even how wonderful,
- 3:26a wonderful free road is, and we did a podcast on that one, but we will be redoing
- 3:33it, obviously for this retrospective, even because I've watched them all kind of fresh,
- 3:39I still think Road Warrior is by far the best in the franchise.
- 3:46I agree. It's the ultimate Mad Max film.
- 3:48It is. and the ultimate car chase film. It is so simplistic in its storytelling.
- 3:56With very, I quite frankly, really cool and quite frankly, deep characters.
- 4:03This is kind of the one where we start to realize Mad Max is not really the
- 4:09focal point of this, like we mentioned in the last one.
- 4:11So we're going to dive into this one pretty quick here and do what we always do with the Mad Max film.
- 4:17It wouldn't be a Mad Max film without the title, without these characters.
- 4:21We got Max, Gyro Captain, Papagallo, Wes. I love Wes.
- 4:27Very well is the man. And we got the humongous, the toady, the feral kid,
- 4:33the warrior woman, and the captain's girl.
- 4:36Well, can I just say, just before we go on, the warrior woman,
- 4:40she appeared in some episodes of Australian soap opera Home and Away back in the 90s.
- 4:45There you go. Just thought I'd like to slip that in there.
- 4:49I'm not even making that up. It's true. I love how you sit there and say,
- 4:55I'm not even making that up.
- 4:56It's true. like it's a fucking fact we give a
- 4:59shit about for some mad reason i
- 5:02have become over the years a bit of a
- 5:05sort of expert on cult australian soap operas through not
- 5:09intentional but i just happened to pick this
- 5:12absolute irrelevant nonsense up over the years so
- 5:15there you go you know what you
- 5:18finally said something you and i agree on irrelevant nonsense
- 5:23concepts but here yeah there
- 5:26you go it's useless information but there you go again
- 5:29back to back something we agree on useless information but it's good for podcasts
- 5:36and like radio shows and stuff people enjoy those little tidbits yeah she was
- 5:40coming away yeah that other woman yeah she was in prisoner cell blockage that
- 5:44guy there yeah i played the fourth cyberman and the doctor who Who adventure from the 60s?
- 5:50Oh my God. Yeah, the listeners are going to go, you know what?
- 5:53I thought Road Warrior was good, but that warrior woman, she has to have a career.
- 6:00I got to look her up. Homeward away.
- 6:03Oh, fuck. All right. So this, Mad Max, has been discussed. The last one, this is after the...
- 6:10This is now the post-apocalyptic world. Yes, the nuclear war has happened.
- 6:15And we even get, at the very beginning, we get like a sort of...
- 6:18Yeah, a breakdown. We get sort of flashbacks. Yeah.
- 6:21Yeah. And the narration. Well, and we'll later find out who the narration is
- 6:25by, but we'll not spoil it just yet, because it's pretty cool, actually.
- 6:29It's the kid. Yeah. Yeah, I know. No, but we're saving that for later on.
- 6:33Everyone knows it's the kid. I knew it was the kid. Well, people who haven't seen it don't know that.
- 6:37Well, why do they fucking listen to the podcast if they haven't seen it?
- 6:39Because they might be interested in going and watching it.
- 6:42But they don't have to now because we're just watching the shit out of it. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:47Guys, if you want to see cool car news, bodies flying in work,
- 6:50cool car crashes, all that shit, it's all wasted now because now you know the
- 6:55little fucking feral kid is the narrator.
- 6:57Are you happy? I just think it's good.
- 6:59Again, we talk about character arcs. that's his character lark
- 7:02he goes from being literally a feral kid who just
- 7:05growls and doesn't speak to you find out later on an
- 7:08educated eloquent narrator of the story i think it's pretty cool lark a leader
- 7:14he becomes he becomes yeah he does he becomes he does become leader of this
- 7:19yeah in place we're about to talk about here yeah all right yeah because you can tell the difference.
- 7:29And obviously when he filmed Mad Max, it was more scenery involved.
- 7:33You had less scenery, but you had more, you had trees and houses and people.
- 7:38And stuff like that. Petrol stations and society was, although it was collapsing,
- 7:41it was still, there was still a semblance of it.
- 7:44Whereas here. There was some, yeah, there was functionality.
- 7:48Was, was still, was, you know, still a play there, a normality too.
- 7:52Yeah. This is just a wasteland now.
- 7:54So that's why he decided to take the sequel and put it in the heart of Australia,
- 8:02dead lands or whatever you call them.
- 8:04The wasteland. And the wastelands. And that gives us our new environment. Yep.
- 8:11There you go. Yep.
- 8:13There we are. So our first introduction is to Wes.
- 8:17I love Wes I love Wes I also I loved him in Commando Yep He's also Some steam
- 8:26Bennett Yeah that's right I think he's been a load of things Over the years
- 8:29He's still not gone about I believe No I think he's passed Oh has he?
- 8:33No I think he's still alive He's near No he's still alive And I think he's He's near 80 I believe,
- 8:39He's in that one What do you call that one We watched with
- 8:42We reviewed it All the names Just sort of escaped me Weird
- 8:45Sans He's in Weird Sans oh yeah he's got the
- 8:48cameo him and michael barryman from the hills of eyes i'm playing
- 8:51joke yeah so we meet wes and his boy
- 8:54toy i just it's not his boy toy i was reading into this and apparently george
- 9:00miller said for all of the basically the crazy characters he said to them on
- 9:05the set give yourselves your own backstory so apparently vernon and the actor
- 9:11who was playing and his sidekick, basically.
- 9:14They came to the decision that he was actually discovered by Wes out in some
- 9:19sort of, I don't know, woods or something like that there.
- 9:22But Wes is actually like a surrogate father to him and that's why he's so upset
- 9:26whenever he gets it. He gets killed. No, they're hitting it.
- 9:31I know there's the, because I mean, obviously there's the...
- 9:33Okay, he's got an adoptive son that he keeps in bondage gear, chained up to him.
- 9:39While Wes himself is Running around with leather Leather trousers with no arse
- 9:44in them Yeah well That's my normal Saturday outfit I know that's what you wore to work Oh yeah Yeah.
- 9:54There's an image we all need in our head Fuck Alright so Wes and his son According
- 10:03to you Is part of the Marauding wasteland gang run by By Humongous. The Lord Humongous.
- 10:11I love Humongous. I am a follower of Romulus. Humongous is awesome.
- 10:14I looked this up, and it's kind of creepy and kind of weird.
- 10:17We discussed this with Friday the 13th Part 3 about the mask.
- 10:21I'm going to tell you something. Somebody on Friday the 13th saw this film,
- 10:25because this came out a year before Friday the 13th Part 3.
- 10:28And this was so, the hockey mask is, I've never ever thought about a hockey
- 10:33mask and a villain before until I saw Road Warrior.
- 10:36Yep. But there's no way somebody on Friday the 13th said, guys,
- 10:40I just saw the Morn Warrior. We need to make this work.
- 10:44I mean, it's, I actually, I think I would have saw Jason Voorhees in a hockey
- 10:48mask before seeing Road Warrior as a kid.
- 10:51I saw them both as a kid, but obviously Road Warrior came before Jason adopting
- 10:56the mask, you know, the hockey mask.
- 10:58So yeah, there's definitely parallels here.
- 11:01And there's a shot when Humongous is giving a speech to the compound and you
- 11:09see the back of his head and it's very little hair.
- 11:13It kind of shows that he's got radiation poisoning or something.
- 11:16Burnt. He's badly burnt.
- 11:17He's not burned. The back of his head is badly burnt. No, it's not. Those are veins.
- 11:23Yeah, but there's burn. There's burn. No, there's not. It is heavily suggested
- 11:26he's burnt this way up. It's not. You got to get. It's not.
- 11:29George Miller said put that to bed. It's not. It's goose. This man is.
- 11:34Goose was burned alive. No, no. I'm sort of winding you up. I'm sort of winding
- 11:38you up. But it was in the original script. That your intent was to do that.
- 11:41Yes. Yes, but then they changed it. Originally, they were going to have Hugh
- 11:44Mungus being Goose, who had survived the first film, but they changed it before
- 11:50it went to the finished product.
- 11:52I think they did it because for Money Buds, I think it would be a good idea. It would be really good.
- 11:57But I get why they didn't do it because you couldn't do it. It cost too much money.
- 12:02The makeup on that body, he's burned. His whole body was fried to a crisp.
- 12:06Yeah. This man is clean-shaven.
- 12:09You see him. He's a bodybuilder. The little guy who plays him The back of his
- 12:14head is not burned He's got radiation poisoning Something is going on He's using his hair.
- 12:21Stop with the burns I swear to Christ You say burns one more time Anyway did
- 12:28you know the warrior woman Was in Home and Away.
- 12:33My point Can I please get to my point Go ahead His clean shaven head It's not really clean.
- 12:41It's got, like I said, a little fritz of hair falling out, and these veins are pulsing.
- 12:46You can see it. It's kind of a cool effect.
- 12:48It looks like the back of Jason's head. Yeah, there's definite parallels there.
- 12:54See that? There, you're welcome. No burns.
- 12:59Okay. It's a goose. Stop. No, fuck it.
- 13:03I can't do this anymore.
- 13:08Right. I like the fact they show right away when they're kind of taunting him,
- 13:12and Max has obviously got the big gun, so Wes backs down.
- 13:17Yes. But he's got that turnover truck, which is coming up. We'll plant the seed there.
- 13:23And he's getting some of the oil dripping from it. Yeah. And it's amazing.
- 13:28He shows you right away how scarce oil is.
- 13:31He even takes a handkerchief and he absorbs some of the oil that's hit in the
- 13:36ground and squeezes it into the saucepan. Brilliant touches.
- 13:38And he's putting it into the likes of, you know, even, you know,
- 13:42hubcaps and all sorts, you know, anything to get his hands onto. Yeah.
- 13:46This were also introduced. I really like seeing him. I think his name is Bruce Spencer.
- 13:50Guy's had a huge career in film. Yeah. He will make a cameo coming up.
- 13:56We won't talk about it as of yet. But I do like the gyro captain in this.
- 14:00And the reason I like this one a lot more, not a lot more,
- 14:05is that him and the gyro captain, the gyro captain almost makes you give Mad
- 14:14Max, I guess, a conscience back somewhat. He brings him back to his humanity.
- 14:20Yeah, exactly. He is, according to George Miller as well, Well,
- 14:23the General Captain is the most important character in the film because he is
- 14:28the link that brings Max back from being mad back to his humanity more.
- 14:36I mean, there's several shots where a guardian angel reference is played on where you...
- 14:46Every time he gets into trouble, Mad Max, he's there always to help him out. Yep. Yep, absolutely.
- 14:52And he comes from the skies, comes from the heavens. He comes from the skies,
- 14:55and there's an absolutely wonderful shot where he helps Max.
- 15:00We'll dive into it now since we're talking about it. Yep.
- 15:03Where Max is pretty much left for dead, and he takes a helicopter and is flying
- 15:09him back to the compound.
- 15:11And it's just a picture of him lying on this, probably whatever it is,
- 15:15on the helicopter, and you see it from above Mad Max and you see the ground below Mad Max. Yep.
- 15:21And then he looks up and he sees this figure.
- 15:25His face. Looking down at him, which is our boy.
- 15:29The gyro captain. Yeah, 100%. And he's basically the one that brings Mad Max back from the brink.
- 15:38You know, even there's a final smile at the end.
- 15:41It's the first time we see Max smile and like the two films,
- 15:45the entirety of the two films leading up to this.
- 15:47Yeah, because he come, these two ended up surviving all these chaos.
- 15:52They always see dumb luck. Yeah. And at the end, he just, he smiles at him because
- 15:56he looks at him, he just has to have a grin because he's like, fuck me.
- 15:59Totally. But yeah, the chemistry between these two is really, really good.
- 16:04And there's probably a reason why they bring him back for a little bit because
- 16:08there is these two, Mel Gibson and Bruce Spencer, I believe it's Bruce Spencer
- 16:12or Bruce Spence. Yeah, they bring him back, but he's playing a different character in the third one.
- 16:16Oh, let's jump into that later. But okay, I missed that, but it'll be interesting
- 16:20to see how that plays out then. I think he also has a cameo in Fury Road, a very small cameo.
- 16:24I can't remember. Yeah.
- 16:27But there you go. But no, Jowl Captain, he's a funny character,
- 16:31but he's a very important and pivotal character as well.
- 16:35This is just brilliant, brilliant writing and visual storytelling.
- 16:38I mean, you were talking about, you know, we don't need to be told about,
- 16:42you know, the oil is so scarce because we are showing it with the scene where
- 16:46Max is at the truck and, you know, he's desperately, you know,
- 16:49trying to, you know, soak up in a handkerchief and all. That's just brilliant visual storytelling.
- 16:54Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
- 16:56There's no need for, there's no data dump.
- 17:00Yes. There's no 20 minute exposés.
- 17:05Long-winded speech or anything. It's just done so simply and so effectively
- 17:10with that scene with the truck. 30 second shot. That's all you needed.
- 17:15So when we're first kind of introduced to the whole gang, I do like where the
- 17:19compound tries to sneak away where they'll take a couple of decoys out.
- 17:24Those poor bastards are the decoys. Yeah, the ones who were killed.
- 17:26They send the three cars out and then obviously they're being watched by the
- 17:32gang and they go after the cars as they come out and they're the decoys, the real ones leaving.
- 17:38Obviously that car gets ambushed, causing the horrible rape and you don't see it.
- 17:43I mean, they obviously pull away because George Miller knows when to cut back.
- 17:46Exactly. Yeah, and you'll find that. It's not for cheaters.
- 17:49You'll find that, we'll find that in the new ones coming up.
- 17:52He knows when to pull it back because you don't need to see it
- 17:54we know what's happening and it's not gratuitous yeah and
- 17:58that they've raped the crossbore it's like mother oh it's
- 18:01brutal yeah yeah terrible well but this is a character
- 18:03you say you really like it but you know ways why didn't you do that to her it
- 18:08is ways it's all he's one of them so he is i believe he's there yeah he's part
- 18:12of that gang that get them yeah oh yeah i can't i said like i said i like to
- 18:16see bernie wells i just not like you who like I had a hard-on for Toe Cutter. Oh, yeah.
- 18:22Well, you said, no, no, so we're fucking evens now.
- 18:25You know what I mean? No, we're not evens. No, we are. You said you loved Weds.
- 18:28I'm a fun, charming, good laugh. What, like Weds?
- 18:32You're like a sick fucker from fucking home and away and shit.
- 18:39The prison of Xbox Five, whatever the fuck that's called. I don't even know
- 18:43what that's called. Prisoner self-blockade. Get it right. Show it the respect it deserves.
- 18:47Yeah. Fuck. Thank you.
- 18:49This one's okay. We were doing pretty good there. No, you just made me go on a rant. That's on you.
- 18:55Shall we meet the feral kid? The feral kid is, we'll call him Chaka.
- 18:59When I grew up as a kid, there was a show called Land of the Lost. Yeah, that was new.
- 19:05There's a little caveman boy called Chaka. Right. This kid looks just like him,
- 19:08so we're going to call him Chaka.
- 19:10Chaka, right. Yeah. All right. Okay. I like his performance. I do a lot.
- 19:14So we're watching, we meet Hugh Mungus, right? Part of the speech.
- 19:18And he gives this big speech. And here's the funny thing is,
- 19:22he's the complete opposite of Toe Cutter.
- 19:24Oh, no, he's thinking, I want to talk sense. That's my point.
- 19:27Toe Cutter was a fucking lunatic. This guy is clearly educated.
- 19:32Yep. And he talks a lot of sense on the face of it. I'm not saying that's what he does in reality.
- 19:36And he's being polite. He's like, hey, listen.
- 19:41And here's the funny thing is, I believe him. I think he would have let these people go.
- 19:46He's honorable in his villain he would have
- 19:52had you know his dogs well you know he would
- 19:54have had might have had to unleash his dogs of war as
- 19:57he calls them the likes of ways and stuff and i love later on well i don't know
- 20:02maybe he wouldn't have because he does have to control ways at times and even
- 20:05at one point puts him onto a leash like a literal dog i mean yes he's got issues
- 20:13you know genocide No shit,
- 20:15yeah Car chasing, slaughter, torture,
- 20:18Oh, so there's another one you like Right, so you've got ways Oh yeah No, no, no.
- 20:26Why don't you just join a gang like that Oh yeah What are you talking about
- 20:31That's my Saturday night crowd,
- 20:34Guys, get the gimp outfits With the back of your leather trousers Cut out and
- 20:38the arse of them You got the assless chaps Yeah yeah and I'll hang out party
- 20:43yeah and I'll hang out with um the rival gang with Toe Cutter you know,
- 20:49that these guys would kick Toe Cutter's ass. No, they wouldn't.
- 20:53Oh, my God. Are you fucking kidding me? I'm worried about it.
- 20:57But here, did you notice as well that it's a great touch as well to be a little
- 21:02bit more serious, but there is a lot of the gang members wearing the police
- 21:07outfits from the original along with their cars.
- 21:10So it's heavily suggested that they have either robbed them off the police or
- 21:14some of the police officers from the previous one, some that we don't see on
- 21:19screen, have basically went insane as well and jumped ship to the gangs.
- 21:24So great touch. That's most likely what it is. I mean... Yeah, oh no, brilliant touch.
- 21:30So yeah, so when he gives this big speech, you got Shaka, and he throws the
- 21:34boomerang, and he kills... Toad guy.
- 21:37According to you, his adoptive son, Wes's son.
- 21:41Yes. And he goes, ape shit. Yes. And I love when he throws the boomerang again,
- 21:46and that fucking idiot tries to catch it. The toad guy, whatever you call him,
- 21:50toad master or whatever, he tries to catch it and he goes, I've got it, I've got it, I've got it.
- 21:55And it cuts his fingers off and then all of the rest of the gang of no sympathy,
- 21:59they all bust out laughing.
- 22:04So when Max makes the pact with him, I saw a tanker that could do the job.
- 22:12Or his famous line is, I'm just here for the gasoline.
- 22:15Yeah. He has He has 16 lines. Yes. And that line, he says twice.
- 22:21But he wants his vehicle back and he wants all the juice he can carry.
- 22:25Can I just say as well, the Interceptor is the fucking coolest car in cinema
- 22:30history, especially in this.
- 22:31And actually, any time I watch this, I get heartbroken when I see it destroyed later on.
- 22:38It is super crude. And it gets crushed. Yeah. It gets crushed.
- 22:41And that's why he doesn't have it in the third one, sadly. So at least it kept the continuity.
- 22:46And that's why Tom Hardy probably came back for Fury Road, because Fury Road
- 22:50technically takes place before this.
- 22:53And he has the Interceptor in that film. Yeah, yeah. So you needed a younger
- 22:57guy. Tom Hardy's a good replacement.
- 22:59I'm more of the opinion, but in my head, Cal and I are more of the opinion that
- 23:02the Tom Hardy Fury Road universe is a separate universe to the Mel Gibson.
- 23:07I know it's not, but in my head, I sort of prefer to think that it's just a
- 23:12reboot and a remake as opposed to set in the same universe.
- 23:17Well, we'll dive into it and see what happens. Maybe find little catches.
- 23:22Mel Gibson is Mad Max to me.
- 23:24Oh, yeah. Yeah. Always will be. Yeah.
- 23:29What I like about this film a lot actually is the fact that,
- 23:35yes, Mad Max is flawed. We know that. Yes.
- 23:40But he gets his ass kicked a lot.
- 23:43He's not fucking superhero. He's not John McClane. He's not Dirty Harry.
- 23:47He's not. He's a guy. He's grinded. Yeah.
- 23:51He's crippled. Yep. technically, and any time he tries to go outside the box,
- 23:56he gets his ass kicked here.
- 23:58He's going through hell and he continues to go through hell.
- 24:00But you're rooting for him because he's an underdog as well,
- 24:03and you have sympathy for him whenever he's getting his ass kicked or blown up or something.
- 24:08But you're also rooting for him because he's...
- 24:14He's helping these people who we've already kind of met, you know,
- 24:19the captain's girl, Papagallo, the leader, even Chaka. Yeah.
- 24:24There's a likability and cause they're human. They're normal human beings just
- 24:28looking to survive and he's going to get this truck.
- 24:31He's just doing it for himself, obviously. We know that at this point and it is, so.
- 24:38There's a glimmer of humanity there with him.
- 24:40Who's still within him. Yeah. Yeah, he acts like he's the man of McGibbon. Yeah, he wants that.
- 24:47But I think he's also doing the back of his mind, the cop, you know, the cop in him.
- 24:52It's still buried deep within him. So it is. Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:55There's a tragedy to the character as well. You know, obviously,
- 24:58you know, with his wife and child being killed, it's even referenced later on
- 25:01whenever, you know, the leader of the sort of compound is, you know,
- 25:06saying, oh, that's what it is.
- 25:07You've lost your family, you know, and that's when Max punches him.
- 25:10You know, again, brilliant visual storytelling.
- 25:13No big long-winded speech. And that's what I'm talking about from where I think
- 25:19Road Warrior is a lot smarter than people say.
- 25:20They see carnage and cool hockey masks. It's sad as well.
- 25:24And Adoptive Sons has everything that you want.
- 25:29Yeah. But there's a lot more to it. There's a lot more layers to the Road Warrior.
- 25:34Big time. Big time. But it has all the cool stuff on top of that,
- 25:37and it looks fantastic on the screen.
- 25:39So when he finally gets the truck And he's honking the horn Get the fucking
- 25:44doors open I'm coming Guess who saves the day again Gyro kid he drops the snake
- 25:49And one of the guys was about to shoot him And so yeah This is where.
- 25:54I would say as well that see the compound Guys they're Not very likable either
- 26:00you know Ultimately whenever you find out at the end That they were only using Max as bait You know.
- 26:08Yeah. He wasn't in on that? I know that. I know that. I know that.
- 26:12Yeah. But now our listener knows.
- 26:15Way to go. Way to go. Well, according to you, they'll all have seen it, so it'll not matter.
- 26:19No, no, no. You said, oh my God, the feral boy's a narrator.
- 26:23Why would you keep that important plot up? Well, they've all seen it.
- 26:26Which is not important at all.
- 26:27So there you go. The oil thing's pretty big. Yeah. That is pretty big. Way to go.
- 26:33Our young listeners, who are probably 12 or so.
- 26:36They've all seen it. I hope there's not 12-year-olds fucking listening to this
- 26:39podcast where you're potty-mouthed. They're listening, and they'll be like, fuck, man.
- 26:43Yeah, Kieran, he really wants me to watch this film. I hope there's no twists. Boom.
- 26:48Little Jimmy. Little Jimmy's listening to us right now, probably in Pennsylvania.
- 26:53And one of our new listeners is crying his heart out because he knows the twist now of Mad Max.
- 26:58Way to go. And seeing that when I was 12, I was watching nice films like Hellraiser
- 27:02and The Evil Dead and stuff, and things like The Road Warrior and the first
- 27:06Mad Max. When you're in 12, you're in fucking padded cells somewhere, you fucking freak.
- 27:12I was literally just in Voorhees.
- 27:16Yeah. So when he does go back and he says, no, they all hug him.
- 27:24Oh, I really appreciate everything you've done.
- 27:26I think you're kind of wrong judging them based on what they did. They didn't.
- 27:31No, it was the leader that had on him. It wasn't like the regular sort of community
- 27:34method. Yeah, I understand, but they're not bad people.
- 27:37I think you're wrong on that. When you first heard it, you're like.
- 27:42Do they, though? Well, a leader does. I don't even know. No, I don't.
- 27:45I was there in the bus with the gasoline. But he's there.
- 27:50Papago gets killed. He's there to sell them that this truck has gas in it.
- 27:57So he sacrifices himself as well.
- 28:00All these people do. The lawyer woman sacrifices himself.
- 28:04They all do. Maybe betrayal is too strong a word.
- 28:08It is because he's getting. The bus is full of the younger people,
- 28:12including the captain's girl, the younger girl.
- 28:15And so he's trying to get them. He's self-sacrificing himself to get them out
- 28:20of there. I'm sorry, man.
- 28:22But they do mislead. I mean, they do mislead him. But at the end of the day,
- 28:28they don't corroborate him.
- 28:30No, it's not about that. It's about, how do I explain it? The bigger picture
- 28:35of getting the younger ones.
- 28:36It doesn't matter what his job is. His job was just to take that truck out of
- 28:39there. He doesn't care what's in it.
- 28:41It has nothing to do with what's in it. It has to do with his job is just to take that truck.
- 28:47That's it. But he was led to believe that the truck contained the gasoline,
- 28:52which didn't. It was just a bait. But who cares?
- 28:54I fucking care because it was the fucking Max Uber.
- 28:58They didn't fuck that. I disagree with that 100%. You know what?
- 29:02Let's go. Okay, calm down. Everyone calm down. I'm calm.
- 29:06Calm down. Whoa, whoa, calm down. Don't make me angry You would like me When
- 29:10I'm angry I don't like you period So there you go We have to get that Out of
- 29:13the way right now Alright Fucking Lover of Fucking humongous In ways.
- 29:20So listen Let's go back To what we're starting Because we're just Going on a
- 29:24rant now And Jimmy's upset You've already ruined Jimmy's experience So Jimmy
- 29:28can't Watch this film now He doesn't need to watch it He's too young for it Anyway So,
- 29:32When you first meet the people in the compound, all right, they're kind of assholes.
- 29:36Now, I get that because he's an outsider.
- 29:39When he does come back to back up his word, they're all like,
- 29:43oh, you're a hero. And then he's like, whoa, whoa, ladies and gentlemen, that's it. I'm done.
- 29:46I'm not doing anything else. And
- 29:48that's when you're talking about when Papagallo kind of goes off on him.
- 29:52We've all lost somebody, you know, but we're here to survive.
- 29:55We're trying to rebuild.
- 29:57You're nothing. You know, and that's where he kind of, Max goes off on him.
- 30:01Yeah. Yeah, but again, when he leaves, one of the guys goes,
- 30:05let's take his fucking car, he's an asshole.
- 30:07Papa Gallo takes everything back, says to him, and says, no,
- 30:10he's an audible man. He honored his contract.
- 30:14So I respected him, that character. So when he comes back and backs up everything
- 30:18he was going to say, all the town folk kind of support him. I'm like,
- 30:23yeah, okay, this guy's pretty cool.
- 30:24So Papa Gallo, it's Papa Gallo that basically,
- 30:29basically i love that they would have known about it as well obviously because they
- 30:32are in the bus with the real gasoline but no i mean
- 30:34fair enough but you know i do love
- 30:37the scene where max does return and says you know if it's all the same to you
- 30:41i'll drive that tanker and your mom goes no it's okay i'm gonna drive it he
- 30:46goes and he gives him this bit of a speech and max just goes cut the crap and
- 30:50he goes all right well there you go you can drive it so when max does leave this is when
- 30:55the Interceptor gets destroyed and they kill his dog, poor doggie.
- 30:59Yeah, I know. The Interceptor and the dog both got it, which really made me sad.
- 31:03Well, I would say I'm actually going to go back on something and actually sort
- 31:06of shockingly agree with you.
- 31:09Papagallo was originally supposed to drive the tanker, so he was going to bait himself.
- 31:13I just, you know, would have had himself as bait driving the tanker with no
- 31:16gasoline in it. So, fair enough. But I still think they should have told Max.
- 31:22Also, that also backs up my point why Papagaio was hesitant of him doing it
- 31:26because he knew what the outcome might be. Yeah.
- 31:29Boom, in your face. They still should have told him. In your face.
- 31:32We just got Jimmy back as a listener. Boom. They still should have told him.
- 31:38Anyways. Jesus. 20 minutes of that.
- 31:43Anyways, the dog's dead. Sadly, yeah.
- 31:47You know what's funny? I usually catch little things. I totally forgot about
- 31:51the booby trap. Oh, yeah, yeah. I know I forgot about it as well.
- 31:55And so I was like, how is he going to get out of this? He's fucked.
- 31:58Yeah. And then the booby trap blows up the car.
- 32:00Yeah. Now there's a nice shot when he's crawling up this little hill.
- 32:04And he's all bloodied. He's all bloody and stuff. But what Luke Miller does,
- 32:08he makes the camera a little blurry and fuzzy and wavy.
- 32:12Like we're feeling his nauseousness and his haziness.
- 32:19It's a nice way of putting us in Max's shoes. Yeah. And then we get that beautiful
- 32:24shot, again, with the gyrocopter helping him.
- 32:29A beautiful shot of the landscape of Australia as he's being airlifted back
- 32:35to the compound. Yes. Nice.
- 32:38Yeah. Nice. And I like Max's turn when either way, whether they fucked Max over
- 32:45or not, he wanted this, oil or not.
- 32:49And it wasn't because I'm going to save the women and children.
- 32:54He didn't give a shit at that point. He wanted them dead.
- 32:57He was fine to be the bait. I honestly think that because he wants to take these
- 33:02fuckers out. They took out his fucking car.
- 33:04They killed his dog, which is probably his only best friend.
- 33:07He's also a bit of a death wish himself anyway.
- 33:10Yeah. He's like, fuck it. I'm driving. No matter what.
- 33:14He told her, I'm going to tell you, no, fuck you. I'm taking it. it
- 33:17so a he put that in his own hands nobody else
- 33:20made him do it but mainly he's yeah you're
- 33:23right he's got death was this guy is a kamikaze pilot he's lost point he's basically
- 33:27martin riggs before martin riggs yeah in the australian wasteland and i don't
- 33:32mean that like the martin riggs as a series of lethal weapon progresses i'm
- 33:36talking about the martin riggs
- 33:37of the the first lethal weapon the suicidal no case yeah exactly yeah.
- 33:44McGeer too, and they wrote Lethal Weapon. Oh, there's definitely shades of...
- 33:48Oh, 100%. There's definitely shades.
- 33:50Because, you know what? Gibson, especially back then, does that quirky,
- 33:53deranged humor, demented humor very well.
- 33:56You know, even, you know, in one of the opening scenes with the gyro captain
- 33:59when they first meet, you know, he's like, you know, he's got the gyro captain
- 34:03with the gun to him and stuff, you know, and he's got that quirky sort of Aussie,
- 34:06you know, likable humor going on. So yeah, he does that very well.
- 34:13The Now, this is it.
- 34:17The final 20 minutes of this film is pure carnage, car chase-fueled adrenaline,
- 34:25and to this day, probably, if not the best car chase of all time.
- 34:34Do you not think that the tree-in sequence in Keith Solomon's Minds is better?
- 34:40You know what? But I did miss a good gay rape attempt.
- 34:45With balls getting blown off with a shotgun from under. In all fairness,
- 34:48we did have a gimp, but you ruined that moment because you said it was his adoptive son.
- 34:53Maybe he's both. Maybe he's his gimp and his son.
- 34:56So, yeah. Wow. Well, I mean, that is the wasteland. But yes,
- 35:00yeah, brilliant. I mean, iconic cinematic.
- 35:04To your sequence? I mean, yeah, we can't really discuss it. You got to see it.
- 35:07I mean, there's not, I mean, there's. It's an adrenaline fix.
- 35:11One shot with a poor bastard in the back of the truck. Yeah.
- 35:15They try to hook it with a car to break down this little paddy,
- 35:19this little barrier that he has in the back of the truck.
- 35:22And he's throwing, you know, little mines and Molotov cocktails and out there.
- 35:26Yeah. And the car can't handle it. The idiots, bad guys, their car can't handle it.
- 35:31So it just starts tumbling. And there's this long shot of this actual truck
- 35:35pulling this sand buggy. Yes.
- 35:39And it's just flipping and flying and flipping and flying. People are in the
- 35:42car just getting crushed.
- 35:43Yeah. It's just amazing. And then you have Humongous coming in.
- 35:47He's got these two poor bastards in front of his car.
- 35:52And he crashes into that guy, that back end of the truck.
- 35:57He says, fuck it, I'll take care of it. And you see the blood from the heads of those poor bastards.
- 36:02Hitting the truck, and then obviously taking down the guy in the back of the oil rig.
- 36:08And it's a great shot because the great thing about Miller, usually with this
- 36:12kind of stuff, it's mannequins.
- 36:15Fast, quick, get it done. Oh, this is a stunt movie. People?
- 36:18No, this is not a stunt. This was not. What?
- 36:22What part are you talking about? We're talking about the poor bastard in the
- 36:26back of the truck who's throwing body cup cocktails at everybody.
- 36:29They're trying to get him down. They're trying to pull out a car.
- 36:32But it's a stuntman up to a certain point Up to a certain point it is Yes.
- 36:38Dude you're interrupting me
- 36:40I'm telling the shot And you're jumping ahead that's your problem Go ahead,
- 36:45Oh my god if this was Home and Away You'd be like tell me more Kieran Home and
- 36:50Away is even more exciting than this That's terrible Please,
- 36:55Go ahead Go ahead.
- 36:58So he's not afraid, despite it being a mannequin, he pulls it out and he shows it in slow-mo.
- 37:04And the guy's thing falls down and he gets, it's on fire because he drops one
- 37:10of the cocktails on himself.
- 37:12And it comes down and you see the body on fire and it's in slow-mo and it's
- 37:18beautifully shot of all this carnage.
- 37:21George Miller has no fear of showing it because he knows he's going to hide
- 37:27that it's a mannequin or something else. You don't notice it.
- 37:31It's just so beautifully shot. It is beautifully shot.
- 37:35And everything, and then even when War A Woman gets it, you feel sorry because
- 37:39you like the character, even though she had a small, you know, very few lines.
- 37:42Papagallo as well. But Papagallo gets it in the back with the big spear.
- 37:46Yeah. Yeah. That training thing. Yeah.
- 37:49And then you got the little feral boy, which is a wonderful ending because he's
- 37:53in the front and he's going to get the last bullet.
- 37:55Yes. And they have one last bullet to end this thing, and then Vernon Wells. Wes pops up again.
- 38:01Wes is going nuts. He pops up at the front, and again, we get that toe-cutter
- 38:07ending where pretty much Humongous sacrifices himself.
- 38:12He says, no matter what, you're not getting away.
- 38:15And he smashes into the truck head-on, crushing obviously Wes.
- 38:19Even that shot, it was like so incredible. You saw every piece of the vehicle.
- 38:25Yeah. Do you know what I mean? The truck flipping over and flipping over and
- 38:28flipping over. And you think, the first time you watch this,
- 38:31you think, whoa, that's it? It's over?
- 38:33You know what I mean? The gasoline is, you know what I mean?
- 38:36It's screwed, the gasoline on the truck. You know, their plan is blown.
- 38:41But then you get the final twist about what's really in the truck.
- 38:45Yeah, they were the decoy. Which is funny because they do plant that seed.
- 38:50When I mentioned at the beginning of the podcast, they set up these little decoys.
- 38:53And then when the bad guys go after them, they send out the real van behind them.
- 38:59So they kind of did plant that seed that, you know, but you kind of forget about it.
- 39:08It's more in hindsight that you realize it, these things.
- 39:12But yeah. Gold wire. And then it's revealed that the community, the ones who survived,
- 39:18made it to this far away land, thousands of away and restarted and built a proper
- 39:24community and the gyro captain was their new leader and then eventually the feral kid,
- 39:31But they never saw Mad Max ever again, the Road Warrior. No.
- 39:35But sadly, Tina Turner will.
- 39:39Wow. Not the entity. There we go, people.
- 39:42Road Warrior is probably, it's easily my top 20 films of all time. It's superb.
- 39:47It's one of my favorites as well. It is an amazing film.
- 39:51We don't do it justice just talking about it. Yeah. In fact,
- 39:54we didn't. We argued most of the time. Yeah. But it is brilliant.
- 39:57It's one of my all-time favorites. it guys check
- 40:01it out and if you oh you know
- 40:03i mean i know you have and you only listen to this podcast yeah well
- 40:08jimmy's hopefully jimmy i'm i
- 40:11apologize for trevor ruining it for you but you
- 40:14you you can do it buddy you can watch stop talking
- 40:17to imaginary if we made up characters again you're always
- 40:21so we'll leave this wonderful osploitation universe this wonderful wasteland
- 40:28this wonderful grindhouse raw violence and gritty drama and playful banter to Tina Turner.
- 40:39We don't need another hero. Fuck.
- 40:44There you go. I mean, if Mad Max has a theme song, we got a problem.
- 40:49And even worse, it was PG-13.
- 40:52And it became Hollywoodized, sadly.
- 40:56And we'll jump into it. I'm going to read a little more up on it to see why George Miller did this.
- 41:02Apparently, apparently, I'm going to have to confirm this. No,
- 41:05don't say it. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. I'm going to have to confirm this,
- 41:08but I'm just setting it up.
- 41:09Apparently, George Miller only in part directed it.
- 41:12I'll always credit it as just the only director on it. Apparently,
- 41:15he was doing something else and he only in part directed it.
- 41:20There's got to be something going on. It's almost like what happened in Carpenter with Halloween 2.
- 41:24Rick Rosenthal directed Halloween 2. Despite me liking it, rumor has it,
- 41:28it was because he was contracted and it was his baby, he jumped in and did some
- 41:33reshoots and some editing.
- 41:34Yes. To clean it up a bit. I have a feeling he's, George Miller's a Warner Brothers guy.
- 41:40He's contracted to them at this point. Yeah. He was directing at this point, Witches of Eastwick.
- 41:45I think there was a place there. So something, something, we'll look into it
- 41:50and you guys tune in. We'll find out. To be continued.
- 41:54Yeah. We'll find out what happened with Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome.
- 41:57All right, guys, thanks for listening.
- 42:00And it's just some good playful rant there. And just hope you just enjoyed it
- 42:05and had a good laugh at our expense. Or at least Trevor's expense.
- 42:09No Karens, you know, Karens. No, they say too charming, too charming.
- 42:14All right, guys, thanks for giving us a listen. Give us a shout at citizenframe
- 42:17underscore podcast on Instagram. And of course, Facebook.
- 42:21We'll chat soon and we will be back.
- 42:24That's all I got. Have a good night.
- 42:26Music.
