- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode one oh eight of
- 0:19Speaker 1: Cards and Categories. I'm my kool Aid from ras Ball,
- 0:22Speaker 1: joined as always by my very good friend Jeremy Burer,
- 0:25Speaker 1: also from ras Ball. How are you doing tonight, Buddy,
- 0:29Speaker 1: doing well?
- 0:30Speaker 2: Excited to talk. I felt like last week we were
- 0:32Speaker 2: talking about how like all the fun news and call
- 0:34Speaker 2: ups were done and things like that, and it's still happening,
- 0:37Speaker 2: so like even a few weeks left, not even a
- 0:41Speaker 2: few weeks, week and a half left, so it's still
- 0:43Speaker 2: some excitement and the playoff races are getting tighter thanks
- 0:47Speaker 2: to least one team. Thank you Mets for making at
- 0:51Speaker 2: least somewhat interesting for us.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Well, I mean there's lots of interest going on out there.
- 0:55Speaker 1: We are recording this on September seventeenth, just so that
- 0:59Speaker 1: you know, And I mean last night we saw the
- 1:01Speaker 1: culmination of cal Raley finally chasing down that switch hitting
- 1:05Speaker 1: home run record. On top of it, somebody on Etsy
- 1:09Speaker 1: bought the witch like positive witch hecks for the Seattle Mariners,
- 1:13Speaker 1: and that's what they've been on their run winning for.
- 1:16Speaker 1: So I think they're down right now as we're speaking.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Because it's a cole Reagan's Bryce Miller kind of battle
- 1:23Speaker 1: of ineptitude. But last night we saw Raleigh jack two homers,
- 1:28Speaker 1: including the first ones just like an all time Titanic
- 1:31Speaker 1: fifty fifth homer off of Michael Waka looks like a
- 1:34Speaker 1: big old Joey Gallows swing from cal Raley. I mean,
- 1:37Speaker 1: we've said plenty about Raley. We had him in our
- 1:40Speaker 1: mock first round draft last week when we did that pod.
- 1:44Speaker 1: So if you want I think more thoughts of him
- 1:46Speaker 1: going into twenty twenty six, certainly check that out. But
- 1:50Speaker 1: this is just one of the most incredible seasons you've
- 1:53Speaker 1: ever seen, right Like we've seen Otani fifty to fifty,
- 1:56Speaker 1: We've seen some of these Aaron Judge years, and I
- 1:59Speaker 1: mean this cal Raley season goes right up there with
- 2:01Speaker 1: them and the pantheon.
- 2:02Speaker 2: For me, yeah, absolutely. I think it's there's something to
- 2:06Speaker 2: be said for the catcher and switch hitter, Like there's
- 2:08Speaker 2: something to be said about that. And we've talked about
- 2:11Speaker 2: how Seattle's not necessarily the easiest place to hit, and
- 2:14Speaker 2: like he has just made that like a laughing stock
- 2:16Speaker 2: at this point. And so I've I've thought for long
- 2:19Speaker 2: there's no way he keep this up. No, he keep
- 2:21Speaker 2: this up and he just keeps delivering and it is
- 2:24Speaker 2: incredibly impressive. Like I am, I am hoping hoping somehow
- 2:29Speaker 2: he makes it to sixty. I just think that would
- 2:31Speaker 2: be incredible and like that will be a season for
- 2:34Speaker 2: the Ages. And I don't see how he's not in
- 2:38Speaker 2: that MVP conversation, Like he has to be there. He
- 2:42Speaker 2: has done things for that position that I've never been
- 2:45Speaker 2: done before. So this has been really really fun to watch.
- 2:48Speaker 2: There really wasn't much of a Homer Derby Champion hangover
- 2:51Speaker 2: after all? Was there? There was a slight one and
- 2:53Speaker 2: then he's come back with a fervor, that's for sure.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, And I mean the Mariners have and all
- 3:00Speaker 1: the way to first place as we're speaking, their half
- 3:03Speaker 1: game up in the AL West, and they are just
- 3:06Speaker 1: they look so hot that you wonder how much they
- 3:10Speaker 1: can even ride this all the way into October. You know,
- 3:13Speaker 1: it's almost the classic conversation of are they peaking a
- 3:15Speaker 1: little too early? But if they look up right now,
- 3:19Speaker 1: they're right behind Detroit for that two seed in the AL.
- 3:21Speaker 1: So lots of great fun I think on that Mariners team.
- 3:26Speaker 1: In fact, I was trying to shoehorn them in with
- 3:29Speaker 1: our topic for today, which is we're going to talk
- 3:31Speaker 1: about card stashes to put together one for the postseason.
- 3:36Speaker 1: We were looking back and reflecting on how Tommy Edmund
- 3:38Speaker 1: kind of made that run out of nowhere last year
- 3:41Speaker 1: in the playoffs, and his card prices shot through the roof,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and so I'm trying to find maybe some players with
- 3:48Speaker 1: you where we can find. You know, these guys are
- 3:52Speaker 1: low priced out in the market relatively to what they
- 3:55Speaker 1: could do if they have a Tommy Edmund like run. Unfortunately,
- 3:58Speaker 1: there's not one of those on the Mariners, because, like
- 4:01Speaker 1: the Mariners are pretty well valued in the baseball card
- 4:05Speaker 1: market overall, and you know, those guys are very much
- 4:10Speaker 1: in demand because it's a hot market too for Mariners cards.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I think between people collecting Griffy's back in the nineties
- 4:16Speaker 1: and just it being the favorite team of so many
- 4:19Speaker 1: in the Pacific Northwest. We won't have any Mariners investments
- 4:22Speaker 1: to talk about, but we will have some Japanese Stars
- 4:25Speaker 1: investments too, so maybe they'll cross over eventually with the Mariners.
- 4:29Speaker 1: We'll see, but I think it's an exciting pod. You're
- 4:31Speaker 1: looking forward to it. I'll looking toward to it.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I somehow love the fact that you brought that together.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I didn't know where you were going, and I like
- 4:37Speaker 2: that you brought this Seattle Japanese connection together because I
- 4:40Speaker 2: am really excited. I'm a nerd, you know this, and
- 4:43Speaker 2: I love to talk and look at the weird angles
- 4:45Speaker 2: of the card collecting hobby and Japanese players, getting the posting,
- 4:50Speaker 2: getting bringing over is just a fun little niche that
- 4:53Speaker 2: I've loved to play in. And let's get let's get
- 4:55Speaker 2: a chance to dig into it because there's some big
- 4:57Speaker 2: names that might become in this winner.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I think there. I mean there's one that's
- 5:02Speaker 1: gonna be a one.
- 5:03Speaker 2: There's a big one. There's a big one coming. So
- 5:05Speaker 2: you thought was fine, we got another one for it? Yeah?
- 5:08Speaker 1: Or yea momoto. Even so, we're going to discuss some
- 5:12Speaker 1: news and notes first from MLB that are affecting the
- 5:15Speaker 1: fantasy games out there for the last week and a
- 5:18Speaker 1: half of you. As you said, we can have twoish weeks.
- 5:21Speaker 1: The season ends on the twenty eighth, so we're right
- 5:24Speaker 1: in between the window of like what you would call
- 5:28Speaker 1: two weeks, ten days, one and a half weeks. We're
- 5:32Speaker 1: not going to focus on that. Let's get into these
- 5:33Speaker 1: news and notes. We're going to start off with two
- 5:36Speaker 1: pretty big promotions out there that happened just these past
- 5:39Speaker 1: couple of days. First one we have, we're going north
- 5:42Speaker 1: of the border to Toronto. The Blue Jays called up
- 5:45Speaker 1: trey Ya Savage to make his MLB debut after he
- 5:50Speaker 1: just lit up a couple of leagues and the miners
- 5:53Speaker 1: blitzed through them. Was picked just last year in the
- 5:57Speaker 1: first round as the twentieth overall pick to the Blue
- 5:59Speaker 1: Jays and is already making his MLB debut, and what
- 6:02Speaker 1: a debut it was. Generated nine strikeouts for his to
- 6:07Speaker 1: set a new Toronto Blue Jays record there for a debut,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and generated sixteen whiffs I believe, out of sixty nine
- 6:14Speaker 1: total pitches. So like, that's an insane whift ratio. You
- 6:17Speaker 1: look at his chasing swinging strike rate right now on
- 6:22Speaker 1: fangrafts and it is at forty six point four percent,
- 6:26Speaker 1: So like it's nasty stuff. He throws it out of
- 6:29Speaker 1: a really really over the top slot. It's not necessarily
- 6:32Speaker 1: the highest velocity, but it does sit mid to upper
- 6:35Speaker 1: nineties and he just absolutely destroyed the rays of that outing.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Is this a guy that you're bumping to the top
- 6:43Speaker 1: of all these other arms that have been coming up
- 6:45Speaker 1: lately that we've talked about between Brandon Sprote, Jonah Tong,
- 6:49Speaker 1: Peyton totally kindly early. Is Trey a Savage at the
- 6:53Speaker 1: top of that mountain?
- 6:55Speaker 2: I don't know if he's at the top of that
- 6:56Speaker 2: mountain right now, but that mountain is very crowded, is
- 6:59Speaker 2: the way to look at like it. I almost change
- 7:01Speaker 2: my opinion in daily on on who's the top of that?
- 7:05Speaker 2: But you call some things out there is that he
- 7:07Speaker 2: does have a really unique delivery, which I think is
- 7:10Speaker 2: gonna take some adjustment, but I do think major league
- 7:12Speaker 2: ktitchers can adjust to it. You know, he he's a
- 7:16Speaker 2: strikeout machine. That's absolutely who he is. You know, he's
- 7:19Speaker 2: been like a career sixteen kper nine guy in the miners.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I mean I get that this, you know, low A
- 7:25Speaker 2: things like that boost that, but still like in a
- 7:29Speaker 2: Triple A this season, in Double A he was thirteen
- 7:31Speaker 2: to fourteen k per nine. Like, it's just insane strikeout numbers.
- 7:36Speaker 2: The walks have been a little all over the place,
- 7:38Speaker 2: So I think the controls a little bit suspected that
- 7:40Speaker 2: we have to keep keep an eye on what that
- 7:42Speaker 2: that's gonna look like. And so I think that's really
- 7:45Speaker 2: what's gonna determine, you know, how far how far he goes.
- 7:50Speaker 2: But he's gonna be a big strikeout guy. That's there's
- 7:53Speaker 2: no question about that. He does have some nasty stuff
- 7:55Speaker 2: and coming out of that angle, it's gonna be it's
- 7:57Speaker 2: gonna be hard to touch. So I think he's towards
- 7:59Speaker 2: the top of that list. Is he the guy I'm
- 8:01Speaker 2: gonna look at for my ratios, not necessarily, Is he
- 8:03Speaker 2: the guy gonna look at for strikeouts? Absolutely. I think
- 8:07Speaker 2: that's really where he kind of fits it at this point.
- 8:09Speaker 2: And you know him and Early and you know Nolan
- 8:12Speaker 2: McLain's been amazing, Like tall and like those are the
- 8:16Speaker 2: guys that I think are gonna be really really interesting
- 8:19Speaker 2: and hard to position next year going to the draft,
- 8:21Speaker 2: because we're gonna get to see two or three start
- 8:23Speaker 2: for most of these guys, and that's a hard projection,
- 8:26Speaker 2: but a lot of them looked pretty good.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Yeah, And it will be something where the postseason will
- 8:30Speaker 1: have a role here I think going forward for Gay
- 8:34Speaker 1: Savage and those Mets players and those Red Sox players,
- 8:38Speaker 1: plus some spring training stuff too. This is the type
- 8:40Speaker 1: of like bulk of players where spring training might really
- 8:45Speaker 1: pull the hairs apart to be able to separate them
- 8:48Speaker 1: depending on how they're looking. Okay, let's move on to
- 8:52Speaker 1: the next promotion, as we're gonna go to San Francisco
- 8:54Speaker 1: where they've called up their number one overall prospect, Bryce Eldridge.
- 9:00Speaker 1: He's a twenty year old six foot seven, two forty
- 9:02Speaker 1: left handed bat that was drafted back in twenty twenty
- 9:06Speaker 1: three in the first round. It was a pretty solid
- 9:09Speaker 1: triple A set for him as a twenty year old.
- 9:13Speaker 1: That's pretty tough, you know. Uh, it's a pretty high
- 9:16Speaker 1: level league. You know, even in when you're twenty four,
- 9:18Speaker 1: you're a little bit underage there, So keep that in
- 9:20Speaker 1: mind as he put together two forty nine, three, twenty two, five,
- 9:24Speaker 1: fourteen there in triple A for the Giants, eighteen homers
- 9:28Speaker 1: in sixty six games, making the debut for San Francisco
- 9:33Speaker 1: because Dominic Smith is hitting the il with an injury.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Is this a type of player, Eldridge where I mean
- 9:40Speaker 1: you will bark up this tree desperate for power at
- 9:43Speaker 1: the end of the season, Because it does look like
- 9:45Speaker 1: Eldridge is going to play down the stretch in mostly
- 9:49Speaker 1: a DH role probably, But are you going to go
- 9:53Speaker 1: his way in case you need a little extra power
- 9:56Speaker 1: down the stretch for these last two weeks.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I I think he's a great choice
- 10:01Speaker 2: for that. I think it's it could be feast for famine,
- 10:03Speaker 2: that's for sure. With with the youth, With the ballpark
- 10:06Speaker 2: that he's in, Oracle Parks not necessarily the place you
- 10:10Speaker 2: go to hit homers, he could absolutely go running. If
- 10:15Speaker 2: I'm a betting man, I'd probably say it's gonna be
- 10:18Speaker 2: a little of growing pains. He is prone to strikeouts,
- 10:21Speaker 2: like I said, Kavani's ballpark, but there's probably not a
- 10:25Speaker 2: lot of options out there right now. So I think
- 10:27Speaker 2: that if you're if you're scratching the free agent wire here,
- 10:33Speaker 2: Eldrich is really a great option for that power. But
- 10:37Speaker 2: it's it's really going to be hit or miss in
- 10:39Speaker 2: the scenario that he's in. But he should with Tom
- 10:41Speaker 2: Smith going down, he should have that full, full run
- 10:44Speaker 2: and you know they're giving them a chance to kind
- 10:46Speaker 2: of settle into that role for for good for next year.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so. I think that's a great point,
- 10:51Speaker 1: is that if he can especially ascend to that starting
- 10:54Speaker 1: role for twenty twenty six. I love him going forward
- 10:57Speaker 1: for that because just long term, I think that is
- 11:00Speaker 1: like bat where it might take him a couple of
- 11:02Speaker 1: years for it to click, but I think when it clicks,
- 11:04Speaker 1: it's gonna really be next level.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Yeah. I agree. I think he's got a guy that
- 11:09Speaker 2: might get a little hype next year that might be
- 11:10Speaker 2: a little tuober premature just because he doesn't have a
- 11:13Speaker 2: full round game. He's not gonna be a high average guy.
- 11:15Speaker 2: He's not gonna get the steals things like that, so
- 11:17Speaker 2: he's gonna have to rely on the big power tool,
- 11:19Speaker 2: which he does have. It just might take a little
- 11:21Speaker 2: bit to grow into that and get used to the majors.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's fair. Okay, Well, with those promotions
- 11:27Speaker 1: out of the way, let's move on to some injuries
- 11:29Speaker 1: here that I mean, most of these guys except for
- 11:31Speaker 1: the first one. I think you're talking about rest the
- 11:33Speaker 1: season being out so you can totally drop any of
- 11:36Speaker 1: these players for fantasy reasons. I think what we'll probably
- 11:39Speaker 1: focus on is either capstoning these players as seasons from
- 11:43Speaker 1: twenty twenty five or kind of projecting them going to
- 11:46Speaker 1: twenty twenty six. So here's the one that caveated. The
- 11:49Speaker 1: first one is an injury, but not an injury as
- 11:53Speaker 1: Treaks Scooble from the Detroit Tigers. His latest start, he
- 11:57Speaker 1: left early because he was grab an ass side said
- 12:01Speaker 1: that his it looked like a classic left oblique strain.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Shelve them keep him out for the playoffs. Never hear
- 12:08Speaker 1: from him again until twenty twenty six. Probably really scared
- 12:12Speaker 1: the Bejesus out of a lot of Tigers fans, but
- 12:15Speaker 1: they checked him out, said he's okay, he's ready to go.
- 12:19Speaker 1: What is your your deaf con here in terms of
- 12:21Speaker 1: the deaf Con scale on concern about tweeks google going
- 12:26Speaker 1: forward not only for this oblique injury, but because of
- 12:29Speaker 1: maybe some of the cascading effects that compensating for a
- 12:32Speaker 1: slight injury as a power pitcher might yield. I will
- 12:36Speaker 1: also remind you, contrary to what most people think, deaf
- 12:41Speaker 1: Con scale one is the highest. So you've got one
- 12:43Speaker 1: through five. What's your deaf cone scale? Uh?
- 12:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I probably would have got that wrong, That's that's
- 12:48Speaker 2: for sure. Yeah, I'm gonna give it a two right now?
- 12:51Speaker 2: Is where when he give it is just because.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Wait, two or course two is really high. Oh sorry
- 12:56Speaker 1: for see I already screwed up.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Uh.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Two is defined as near nuclear war.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I mean it depends where you want to look at it.
- 13:06Speaker 2: But like that's why I feel like when you're going
- 13:07Speaker 2: to face schooble from HITTINGE perspectives, Okay, we're gonna give
- 13:10Speaker 2: it the four. What's the four defined it? What's what's
- 13:14Speaker 2: that definition?
- 13:15Speaker 1: Intel Watch increased security measures strengthened. So okay, I think
- 13:20Speaker 1: Condo America after nine to eleven.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, that's that's fair. So I think that's where
- 13:25Speaker 2: Schoogle fits in that four category. Is like if this,
- 13:29Speaker 2: if the the Tigers were not in it, his season's over,
- 13:32Speaker 2: We're not hearing about it. He's kind of recovering, and
- 13:34Speaker 2: then he's back full full steam next year. The reason
- 13:37Speaker 2: it's not a five a man, the skills messing me up.
- 13:40Speaker 2: But the reason it's not a five is like they
- 13:42Speaker 2: need this guy, like he is the ace. He is
- 13:45Speaker 2: their guy, and if they're gonna do some damage throughout
- 13:49Speaker 2: the postseason, it's him. It's he is absolutely relying on
- 13:53Speaker 2: and they're gonna ride that horse. Like the Tigers winning
- 13:56Speaker 2: window is not like it's not like it's just beginning
- 13:58Speaker 2: and it's gonna be this thing like they they've they've
- 14:01Speaker 2: got everything out of that team that they could this year.
- 14:04Speaker 2: And don't get me wrong with her good team, but
- 14:05Speaker 2: it's not like you're like, oh, this is anas buddy dynasty,
- 14:08Speaker 2: Like it still got some cracks in the in the
- 14:11Speaker 2: in the in the roster here. So they're gonna ride
- 14:14Speaker 2: that arm and I think they're they're gonna like make
- 14:17Speaker 2: They're gonna give another start, make sure he's good, and
- 14:19Speaker 2: then they're going to grind in the postseason. So that's
- 14:22Speaker 2: why why it's got a little bit more of watch
- 14:24Speaker 2: for me, because it's that little bit of an injury
- 14:27Speaker 2: and then you push becomes a big injury. That's where
- 14:29Speaker 2: the risk is here.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I totally agree, and I mean I
- 14:33Speaker 1: think it certainly makes me scared if you have schooble
- 14:37Speaker 1: rostered and you sort of keeper dynasty situation because you're
- 14:41Speaker 1: just one bad toss, one bad tweak from this really
- 14:45Speaker 1: going sideways. This is a guy who battled elbow injuries
- 14:49Speaker 1: coming through the miners, which is we talked about this
- 14:51Speaker 1: a little bit last week, where if I had to
- 14:52Speaker 1: take a picture in the first round. I'd go with
- 14:54Speaker 1: Skemes just because of that little blip of the former
- 14:58Speaker 1: injury history for schoobl So it'll be I think fascinating
- 15:03Speaker 1: to watch him going forward, because, like you said, this
- 15:05Speaker 1: Tigers team is going as deep as Treek Schooble can
- 15:08Speaker 1: carry them through the playoffs. Okay, let's move on to
- 15:12Speaker 1: the next injury where I mean this guy. It's a
- 15:16Speaker 1: totally lost season for Jordan Alvarez, who sprained his ankle
- 15:20Speaker 1: pretty significantly is what they're calling it, when he was
- 15:23Speaker 1: just crossing home plate the other night, just twisted the ankle,
- 15:27Speaker 1: and I think when you read between the lines, I
- 15:29Speaker 1: think he probably tore some sort of tendon or something
- 15:32Speaker 1: in there. Will probably also likely be setting himself up
- 15:35Speaker 1: for classic Kirk Gibson Freddie Freeman situation in these playoffs.
- 15:41Speaker 1: But I mean that is if he plays at all,
- 15:44Speaker 1: because Houston's being very, very cautious about what they're saying
- 15:47Speaker 1: for Alvarez going forward. Wraps up a pretty garbage season
- 15:51Speaker 1: from him that, considering you probably used a first or
- 15:54Speaker 1: second round pick on him, put up a two seventy three,
- 15:57Speaker 1: three sixty seven, four to thirty slash line. That's his
- 16:00Speaker 1: career worst slug percentage only forty eight games, six homers,
- 16:05Speaker 1: seventeen runs, twenty seven stone or twenty seven RBIs one
- 16:09Speaker 1: stone base. So you did get the one stolen base.
- 16:11Speaker 1: But what are you doing with Yourdan going forward? We've
- 16:14Speaker 1: talked about this here and there, and it was more
- 16:16Speaker 1: so in the in the realm of that hand injury.
- 16:20Speaker 1: But you know he's got the knee issues. He can't
- 16:22Speaker 1: apparently run across home plate without just totally jacking up
- 16:26Speaker 1: his ankle.
- 16:26Speaker 2: He's going to be like, how do you trip on
- 16:29Speaker 2: home plate? Like that's what I want to know. Like,
- 16:32Speaker 2: but like like even if you watch it, like it
- 16:34Speaker 2: wasn't like he's slid. It's just like somehow he put
- 16:37Speaker 2: his foot down and it completely rolled in the opposite
- 16:40Speaker 2: direction where he's going, Like this is reminiscent of Freddie
- 16:42Speaker 2: Freeman in the World Series last year. And but he
- 16:45Speaker 2: was like turning the corner like you'd almost running straight
- 16:48Speaker 2: in his ankle into the side, Like not logical, not
- 16:51Speaker 2: what you asked either, But I do think I am
- 16:56Speaker 2: I am out, I am out on your going forward,
- 16:59Speaker 2: Like feel bad for anybody that has them in like
- 17:02Speaker 2: leagues in the playoffs eros this year because they didn't
- 17:04Speaker 2: put him on the il and just because they're like
- 17:08Speaker 2: Jordan can still probably mash and they're looking at like
- 17:10Speaker 2: the Freddie Freemans scenario from last year, where like, give
- 17:13Speaker 2: him a few days at least, if the guy can stand,
- 17:15Speaker 2: he's probably still a lethal bat at the plate, right,
- 17:18Speaker 2: he could still do some damage. And so your Kirk
- 17:21Speaker 2: Gibson scenario is actually really really astute, but it's gonna
- 17:25Speaker 2: just cause fantasy owners' nightmares and then I look forward
- 17:29Speaker 2: to next year, it is like, my goodness, this guy
- 17:30Speaker 2: just can't stand on the field. And it's not just
- 17:33Speaker 2: it's not just one thing, it's not just two things.
- 17:34Speaker 2: It's like multiple, it's like three four, Like literally everything's
- 17:38Speaker 2: falling apart on Jorddan Alfroz at this point. So unless
- 17:42Speaker 2: like it's not like they can't protect him by putt
- 17:44Speaker 2: him a dhl's what he is.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, I think it's also gonna maybe start following
- 17:48Speaker 1: like the Marcelo Zuna route, where it's like, I mean,
- 17:51Speaker 1: Ozuna fell and drafts for other reasons, but like there's
- 17:54Speaker 1: a similar sort of vibe where the injury risk is
- 17:57Speaker 1: there and if he hits, he hits, but like, do
- 18:00Speaker 1: you really want it considering he's also really killing you
- 18:02Speaker 1: in stolen bases?
- 18:04Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's also only one position. Like he from
- 18:06Speaker 2: a draft perspective, he clogs up the utility positions, so
- 18:09Speaker 2: you get stuck because you have to spend the heighth
- 18:11Speaker 2: of draft back and then yeah, man, if he drops
- 18:15Speaker 2: those Zulik draft capital this like how do you pass
- 18:18Speaker 2: on him? But like, man, it hurts, it hurts to
- 18:20Speaker 2: pick them. It sure does.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Okay, next injury we have is to the All Star
- 18:24Speaker 1: Will Smith from the Dodgers catcher there who has really
- 18:29Speaker 1: I mean, if it wasn't for cal Raley putting up
- 18:31Speaker 1: the crazy season, this is the guy who probably would
- 18:34Speaker 1: have topped the list of is the best fantasy catcher
- 18:37Speaker 1: out there? Gonna end the season for him, it's a
- 18:39Speaker 1: hand contusion at two ninety six four or four four
- 18:42Speaker 1: ninety seven. So that's a great slash line there was
- 18:46Speaker 1: really found, just found a groove in terms of the
- 18:49Speaker 1: walk rate really shot up for Will Smith. The plate
- 18:52Speaker 1: discipline really kind of kicked in. It is his let
- 18:55Speaker 1: me count it out to sixth. It was his seventh
- 18:58Speaker 1: year in the league, so I do wonder do you
- 19:00Speaker 1: think there is something to that in terms of catchers overall,
- 19:03Speaker 1: where especially ones like this, if they can stay on
- 19:06Speaker 1: the field, play in a great organization like the Dodgers,
- 19:09Speaker 1: will Smith is kind of rounding into maybe that catcher
- 19:13Speaker 1: too behind cal Rally or where are you playing him
- 19:16Speaker 1: kind of on your fantasy board?
- 19:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right, that's kind of where he
- 19:21Speaker 2: is the only downside with will Smith at this point
- 19:26Speaker 2: is he doesn't have what cal Rally and a number
- 19:28Speaker 2: of other catchers do in that kind of emerging catcher landscape,
- 19:31Speaker 2: which is he doesn't have the other positions available. That's
- 19:35Speaker 2: really what's gonna hurt him. So he's not gonna be
- 19:37Speaker 2: the guy that gets one hundred and fifty hundred and
- 19:39Speaker 2: sixty games worth of bats when he hasn't often he's off,
- 19:42Speaker 2: and I think that's the thing that's gonna maybe pull
- 19:45Speaker 2: him back. Like I don't disagree that he looks like
- 19:47Speaker 2: that number two behind Rally, but it's a distant two.
- 19:50Speaker 2: And when you're in like more weekly leagues, that might
- 19:54Speaker 2: kind of take him down even more because you're just
- 19:57Speaker 2: not confident you're going to always get those at bats
- 19:59Speaker 2: every time. But there is this thing about Catcher's which
- 20:03Speaker 2: it seems that you know, historically they've taken time to develop,
- 20:06Speaker 2: become you know, defensive first and then really grow into
- 20:09Speaker 2: the bat Now I feel like I'm speaking of both
- 20:11Speaker 2: sides of my mouth this year with your you know,
- 20:13Speaker 2: Drake Baldwin's, Augustin Ramirez, you know a number of guys
- 20:17Speaker 2: that are just coming up and just mashing, which is
- 20:20Speaker 2: kind of changed the landscape. So like, Ketcher's just in
- 20:23Speaker 2: a enigma this year, and I'm just so interested to
- 20:25Speaker 2: see what it looks like next year. But Will Smith
- 20:27Speaker 2: absolutely in the top conversation, Kyle Rally wins the top,
- 20:30Speaker 2: and then then there's everybody else. I think Will Smith's
- 20:32Speaker 2: leading that charge.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I think I'm there with you. It's the
- 20:36Speaker 1: batting average, I think too, where he's a really really
- 20:39Speaker 1: sharp hitter. Now, So yeah, I think that that's spot
- 20:43Speaker 1: on for Will Smith. Let's stay in California for our
- 20:47Speaker 1: next injury. As we've got Zach Netto hitting the IL
- 20:51Speaker 1: with a handstrain. That's going to wrap up his season
- 20:53Speaker 1: for the Angels and another great season out of him.
- 20:57Speaker 1: I was really worried about that shoulder coming into twenty
- 20:59Speaker 1: two for Neto, I was dead wrong. Put up another
- 21:03Speaker 1: twenty five to twenty five season with twenty six homers
- 21:07Speaker 1: and stolen bases. Apiece eighty two runs a little light
- 21:10Speaker 1: in the RBI is sixty two. Because he plays the
- 21:11Speaker 1: Angels two fifty seven batting average. You'll lift with it,
- 21:14Speaker 1: but in one hundred and twenty eight games, So you
- 21:17Speaker 1: kind of paste that out. You can add one quarter.
- 21:22Speaker 1: You're looking at somebody who is going to be pushing
- 21:26Speaker 1: thirty thirty on those paces next year. So is Neto
- 21:30Speaker 1: pushing his way into the second round conversation for you?
- 21:33Speaker 1: Or is there still just too much injury risk for
- 21:36Speaker 1: you to push him that far up the board.
- 21:39Speaker 2: I think there's too much injury risk and just too
- 21:41Speaker 2: much overall. Like let's say bad as ball risks. Like
- 21:44Speaker 2: his profile under of the covers just isn't great, Like
- 21:48Speaker 2: he doesn't walk, he strikes out a decent amount out
- 21:50Speaker 2: like it is a volatile profile, and I don't know
- 21:54Speaker 2: what it is. But like zech Netto just doesn't like
- 21:56Speaker 2: ring like our speed bat. To me, he reads like
- 22:00Speaker 2: crafty middle dfield, like poking the ball around kind of guy.
- 22:04Speaker 2: That's just what he feels like, I mean, the guy's
- 22:07Speaker 2: five eleven eighty five, Like that was like me at
- 22:10Speaker 2: one of my my playing days, and I just I
- 22:12Speaker 2: wasn't crushing bombs like like he is. And so like
- 22:17Speaker 2: I I think that he's one of those guys is
- 22:20Speaker 2: gonna have a really wide draft range next year because
- 22:24Speaker 2: he's gone twenty twenty and back to back seasons. But
- 22:29Speaker 2: when you look at the like savant numbers, you look
- 22:31Speaker 2: under the covers, like it's just not the prettiest version
- 22:34Speaker 2: of doing it, and like there's this weird stigma of
- 22:37Speaker 2: playing for the Angels that like you can't be that good,
- 22:39Speaker 2: can you? It just doesn't play. So I think he's
- 22:43Speaker 2: gonna be he like he's gonna sneak into like I'm
- 22:46Speaker 2: gonna say, third round is probably where it's start being
- 22:48Speaker 2: in that conversation for me. But I think he's gonna
- 22:51Speaker 2: go all the way back to like the sixth or seventh,
- 22:53Speaker 2: Like there's gonna be a huge, huge array on him,
- 22:56Speaker 2: just because I I don't know that you can fully
- 22:58Speaker 2: buy into it when you look under the covers, just
- 23:00Speaker 2: like how's he continue continues to do this and there's
- 23:03Speaker 2: not like a you can't look and there's a lot
- 23:05Speaker 2: like this luck metric. His home run for fly ball
- 23:08Speaker 2: is a little high, like for for a little guy,
- 23:10Speaker 2: it's like eighteen percent, which is that's that's up there,
- 23:15Speaker 2: but he's he's done it consistently. So I'm having trouble
- 23:19Speaker 2: buying in here. But yeah, it's hard to argue getst results.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I know exactly. I think it's a little bit
- 23:26Speaker 1: of like one of those classic dudes where the I
- 23:30Speaker 1: mean Trevor's story is a little bit like this too,
- 23:32Speaker 1: where the actual results on the field like sabermetrically very
- 23:38Speaker 1: meh across the board for zac Nato and now you
- 23:40Speaker 1: see it, it's back to back one fifteen WRC pluses
- 23:43Speaker 1: too because he doesn't walk. It's a six percent walk
- 23:46Speaker 1: right like pretty consistently, but like in a fantasy element,
- 23:51Speaker 1: he really gets elevated. And I think there's always this
- 23:55Speaker 1: is the type of guy who there's always one believer
- 23:57Speaker 1: in every draft, so I don't end up with him,
- 23:59Speaker 1: but you look up and it's always like you're like, man,
- 24:02Speaker 1: why did I not keep up pace with this team?
- 24:05Speaker 1: And it's because I've got somebody like a zach Natto
- 24:07Speaker 1: where the the bottom can fall out of it. But
- 24:10Speaker 1: as it's working, it's working.
- 24:12Speaker 2: It reminds me of Lane Thomas Like this, this is
- 24:16Speaker 2: the Lane Thomas h conundrum of like I don't see it.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I don't see it. It keeps happening, and then at
- 24:24Speaker 2: one point you're right like and it just fun like
- 24:27Speaker 2: all of a sudden, it's like I finally getta buy
- 24:29Speaker 2: in because he's done it four years, agow, he's got
- 24:31Speaker 2: twenty twenty, he's one all these things. And then you
- 24:33Speaker 2: buy in and like nothing happens. You're like, well, okay,
- 24:36Speaker 2: that's by fault, like I shouldn't have coupt believeing it.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Like that's what I feel like with Neta, right, I
- 24:40Speaker 2: was like, I feel like the finally the year I
- 24:42Speaker 2: say yes, it's gonna completely fall flat so that I
- 24:46Speaker 2: probably won't own him just because like I just I
- 24:49Speaker 2: feel like I feel like the the cliff is coming. Yeah.
- 24:52Speaker 1: I mean as a word of warning, that was me
- 24:53Speaker 1: with jord On this year. So like I hate crow
- 24:58Speaker 1: and TGFBI with that. So that's for sure. Uh okay, Well,
- 25:02Speaker 1: I mean that's going to kick off shortstop corner here
- 25:04Speaker 1: for us, because let's stick with another injury there at
- 25:08Speaker 1: the six. But we're going back across the country to
- 25:10Speaker 1: New York where we've got Anthony Volpi, where they haven't
- 25:14Speaker 1: placed him on the il. He's just kind of really
- 25:16Speaker 1: playing in a limited role for them right now. But
- 25:19Speaker 1: it was disclosed that he had been playing with a
- 25:24Speaker 1: laborum tear in his shoulder down the stretch throughout the season,
- 25:27Speaker 1: and so I mean, you can't fully fault him for
- 25:31Speaker 1: the stat line. But then at the end of the day,
- 25:33Speaker 1: it's pretty much about the spot on career stat line
- 25:36Speaker 1: of Anthony Volpi where this season one hundred and forty
- 25:39Speaker 1: three games, nineteen homers, sixteen stolen bases, a two oh
- 25:42Speaker 1: eight average, and it went with a twenty five percent
- 25:45Speaker 1: strikeout weight rate, seven and a half percent walk rate.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I mean, the difference here compared to Neto is Vulpi
- 25:52Speaker 1: has a ten point two percent barrel rate, so he
- 25:55Speaker 1: hits at the correct angles, whiffs a little bit too much.
- 26:00Speaker 1: What are you doing with Anthony Volpe going for it?
- 26:02Speaker 1: Because this is a very confounding guy too, And it's
- 26:05Speaker 1: just so confounding. I've just steered clear and tried to
- 26:08Speaker 1: you know, you don't need a player like this every
- 26:11Speaker 1: year and so why roster him and deal with the
- 26:15Speaker 1: headache when I can just find different options out there?
- 26:19Speaker 1: Are you in that boat? Are are you maybe believing
- 26:21Speaker 1: in this going forward and saying, hey, you know what,
- 26:24Speaker 1: Anthony Volpe pretty young, twenty four years old. He would
- 26:27Speaker 1: have been taking it off if it wasn't for this
- 26:29Speaker 1: slabrom tear.
- 26:31Speaker 2: I'm a little in the second boat in that and
- 26:34Speaker 2: I've been there for like two years now, and so
- 26:36Speaker 2: like it's starting to wait on me, because if you
- 26:39Speaker 2: look at this under the covers, like he's not lighting
- 26:41Speaker 2: up like all the metrics, he does chase a little
- 26:45Speaker 2: and makes a little too much contact. He doesn't, but
- 26:46Speaker 2: like you just go through the way he approaches the
- 26:50Speaker 2: game and everything looks good. He hits the ball all
- 26:53Speaker 2: parts of the field, he has relatively decent patients of
- 26:56Speaker 2: the plate. He's not overly aggressive, he's not overly chasing things.
- 27:00Speaker 2: He's barreling the ball a good amount of time. He's
- 27:03Speaker 2: hitting it hard, like all these little things, like he
- 27:06Speaker 2: walks a little bit more, he doesn't strike out as much,
- 27:09Speaker 2: and like it feels like he should be hitting two
- 27:12Speaker 2: fifty and going twenty twenty, and he's going twenty twenty
- 27:16Speaker 2: and two to eight, and like, I think that's the piece.
- 27:19Speaker 2: And even like his underneath his ex batting of respect
- 27:22Speaker 2: bad Vers is always like almost two forty and so
- 27:25Speaker 2: it's you look at what he did last year and
- 27:27Speaker 2: he hit twelve homers and twenty eight steels two forty three,
- 27:30Speaker 2: and you're sitting here going, well, the power is just
- 27:32Speaker 2: he's he's maturing into that because he's he's again a
- 27:35Speaker 2: smaller guy. He's five ten, one ninety seven, but he
- 27:39Speaker 2: knows how to use that ballpark. So like I just
- 27:41Speaker 2: keep looking at him, like how is he not doing better?
- 27:43Speaker 2: Is the part I'm really struggling with Bullpay because everything
- 27:46Speaker 2: looks good. I've consistently ranked him in like the top
- 27:48Speaker 2: one hundred like every year to start, and then like
- 27:51Speaker 2: he ends up dropping out because I'm like an idiot
- 27:53Speaker 2: as I finally realized that he's just gonna hit two hundred.
- 27:56Speaker 2: So I'm really really torn. I think he's the guy
- 27:59Speaker 2: I'm gonn I'm gonna continue to own like in that
- 28:01Speaker 2: middle endfield because if I can get a twenty twenty
- 28:04Speaker 2: bat that just seems like he can't quite figure out
- 28:07Speaker 2: the batting average. I think it's risk worth taking because
- 28:11Speaker 2: I do think he's gonna figure it out at some
- 28:13Speaker 2: point here and the injuries to blame all these kind
- 28:16Speaker 2: of things, and the Yankees just stuck with him for
- 28:18Speaker 2: three years, Like you know, he does all these other
- 28:21Speaker 2: things so well, So like I think that it's gonna
- 28:24Speaker 2: at some point happen. It's just a matter can you
- 28:26Speaker 2: Can you take the penalty until it does?
- 28:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally I hear you. Yeah, it's tough. It
- 28:32Speaker 1: is tough because I think there is a very well
- 28:35Speaker 1: rounded skill set and it shows up on Savant and
- 28:38Speaker 1: it's a tough call to make. But I guess it
- 28:41Speaker 1: will be very price based too, because you still came
- 28:44Speaker 1: into drafts this year if Wolpi was not very cheap,
- 28:49Speaker 1: you know what I mean. If he does fall to
- 28:50Speaker 1: where he's a very back end and my option going
- 28:54Speaker 1: into twenty twenty six, then I might find myself fine
- 28:58Speaker 1: rostering him a little bit more. But that it doesn't
- 29:00Speaker 1: happen a lot with Yankees players.
- 29:03Speaker 2: It does feel like what you almost want next year
- 29:06Speaker 2: to be is the Trevor Story situation. Right where he's
- 29:09Speaker 2: at the back in the drafts. Everybody knows he's got
- 29:11Speaker 2: the talent, everybody knows it, but there's these wars you
- 29:13Speaker 2: just I can't, I can't do it, and then you
- 29:16Speaker 2: take the gamble and all of a sudden, it just
- 29:18Speaker 2: keeps happening the whole year. You just keep looking like, Okay,
- 29:20Speaker 2: when's the cliff, when's the clips? It keeps getting better
- 29:22Speaker 2: and better, Like I feel like that's what's gonna happen.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I just don't know what you year that it's gonna be.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I think that totally makes sense. Okay, well,
- 29:30Speaker 1: let's round out shot shortstop corner with the third player here.
- 29:34Speaker 1: We're talking twenty three year old Mason Win who is
- 29:37Speaker 1: down for the season undergoing knee surgery and he's been playing.
- 29:43Speaker 1: I think they don't really spell it out. I'm trying
- 29:46Speaker 1: to look through the story on this, but I don't
- 29:49Speaker 1: think they've ever kind of make a defensive line win
- 29:53Speaker 1: Win Win started dealing with this knee injury. It is
- 29:59Speaker 1: a minisc gets issued, but you have to think that
- 30:02Speaker 1: it probably happened sometime in August because month by month,
- 30:07Speaker 1: the WRC plus is like they're kind of well, maybe
- 30:10Speaker 1: not WRC plus is the one to look at, but
- 30:12Speaker 1: batting average, you know, it's two sixty two, eighty nine,
- 30:15Speaker 1: two forty three, two ninety two is where it peaks
- 30:18Speaker 1: in July two hundred, in August one ninety in September, So,
- 30:23Speaker 1: especially as I was watching Mason Win play, you could
- 30:26Speaker 1: tell there was something just off, because before this he
- 30:29Speaker 1: was starting to kind of round into a player where
- 30:32Speaker 1: I think he was probably going to start being like
- 30:34Speaker 1: a breakout pick going into next year. You can see it.
- 30:37Speaker 1: He's just kind of incrementally improved. And this is the
- 30:39Speaker 1: type of player in Win where I've talked about. I
- 30:42Speaker 1: really love where they play for a couple of years
- 30:46Speaker 1: because of the defense learned, the game learned, the strike zone,
- 30:49Speaker 1: and win at shortstop for the Cardinals has really started
- 30:52Speaker 1: to develop like what I would say in A and
- 30:54Speaker 1: a B swing. Even though he is another one of
- 30:56Speaker 1: these tiny guys, he can unload on a pitch when
- 31:00Speaker 1: he wants to and is ready for it. The contact
- 31:02Speaker 1: rate has been increasing each year. I still believe in
- 31:05Speaker 1: him going forward, but if anything, maybe this kind of
- 31:08Speaker 1: dampers the price because he didn't ever reach double digit
- 31:12Speaker 1: homers and steals this year. Are you there with me?
- 31:15Speaker 1: Or you still a little more cautious on Win because
- 31:18Speaker 1: like I just did say he's five nine, one eight five.
- 31:21Speaker 1: He's a little guy defense first, great ballplayer, gonna be
- 31:25Speaker 1: a three to four win player every year in fangrafts
- 31:27Speaker 1: war but not for use in fantasy. Which boat are
- 31:31Speaker 1: you on here?
- 31:32Speaker 2: I think I'm in the boat that there is value here.
- 31:35Speaker 2: I just I think it is capped. Like I think
- 31:38Speaker 2: he's gonna be a guy that he needs to hit
- 31:42Speaker 2: the batting average, So that's what he needs to be
- 31:44Speaker 2: able to do. Because he's not He's probably never gonna
- 31:46Speaker 2: be much more than a fifteen to fifteen guy. And
- 31:49Speaker 2: I think that's the kind of the downfall here. He
- 31:51Speaker 2: doesn't get on base enough to make it take advantage
- 31:55Speaker 2: of those those skill sets. So I think if he can,
- 32:00Speaker 2: if he can stay healthy, hit eighty to ninety, then
- 32:03Speaker 2: he's a really, really valuable middle infielder. He's gonna score
- 32:05Speaker 2: a lot of runs. He's be the top that lineup,
- 32:07Speaker 2: and so I think there's an value there. But I
- 32:09Speaker 2: just don't think it's ever getting to the point that
- 32:11Speaker 2: you're like, like, yes, I'm gonna plug this guy in.
- 32:12Speaker 2: He's gonna continue to be the guy end of drafts
- 32:15Speaker 2: that you kind of say Okay, Well, at least I
- 32:17Speaker 2: know I'm not taking a zero in any category. He's
- 32:19Speaker 2: not gonna completely tank me. He's kind of replacement levels
- 32:24Speaker 2: plus in the fantasy game, which is fine. There's a
- 32:27Speaker 2: lot of value to that. Like they're having guys with upside,
- 32:30Speaker 2: but I think he's gonna continuously be one of those.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Is a better real world ballplayer and great having the team,
- 32:35Speaker 2: clubhouse guy, all these things, and then from a fantasy perspective,
- 32:38Speaker 2: we're like, yeah, it's I had Mason Wynn. I didn't
- 32:43Speaker 2: win the league. I didn't lose the league, Like he
- 32:45Speaker 2: was just part of the cog that led me to
- 32:47Speaker 2: the end of the season.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, Yeah, So I think, yeah, we're kind of
- 32:52Speaker 1: I'm a little more positive, but where it's gonna be
- 32:55Speaker 1: somewhere in that shade. But I do think it's a
- 32:57Speaker 1: player where there are outcomes where he does make it
- 33:00Speaker 1: more to like eighteen eighteen three hundred, and then you're
- 33:03Speaker 1: talking something that's a little bit more dynamic. So last
- 33:06Speaker 1: injury we have, we're going to a prospect pitcher in
- 33:10Speaker 1: the national system. It is not Travis Secora.
- 33:12Speaker 2: This time.
- 33:13Speaker 1: We're talking Harley and Susana, who was one of the
- 33:15Speaker 1: players that came back for Juan Soto had been down
- 33:19Speaker 1: for part of this season because of a ucl sprain.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Now is undergoing like a major injury in his latch shoulder,
- 33:27Speaker 1: like it's just not really adding up and looking great.
- 33:31Speaker 1: He was fantastic when he was out there pitching. Susana
- 33:35Speaker 1: really showed what he had been promised. And I mean,
- 33:38Speaker 1: this is a guy who some people thought he would
- 33:41Speaker 1: make it to the majors this year when he was
- 33:43Speaker 1: in DOUBLEA, put up a three to six to one
- 33:45Speaker 1: RA with a fifteen point zero two K nine over
- 33:49Speaker 1: forty seven and a third inning, so it was electric stuff.
- 33:54Speaker 1: But unfortunately, this is a lot of injury. This is
- 33:56Speaker 1: kind of starting to smell a little bit like Daniel
- 33:58Speaker 1: Espino to me, where I don't know if the arm
- 34:01Speaker 1: can handle the talent. What are you gonna do with
- 34:04Speaker 1: Susana in spots where you might have had him, especially
- 34:06Speaker 1: because he was certainly probably scooped back up in a
- 34:09Speaker 1: lot of places where he might have been fringy because
- 34:12Speaker 1: the Double A statistics were so out of the world.
- 34:15Speaker 2: They Yeah, this is a guy. It's very clear for
- 34:19Speaker 2: me what I'm doing with him if I have him.
- 34:20Speaker 2: I'm waiting until he's in rehabbing getting happy reports and
- 34:23Speaker 2: he is leaving my team because I not just the injuries,
- 34:28Speaker 2: but the profile, Like combined, it's like a pounding effect here.
- 34:32Speaker 2: He doesn't have the control and he is destined for
- 34:36Speaker 2: a bullpen roll because of that. And like it's like
- 34:41Speaker 2: we're talking about he had a lot surgery. This is
- 34:43Speaker 2: a guy that missed two and a half months within
- 34:45Speaker 2: the UCL injury and didn't have Tommy John as a
- 34:48Speaker 2: result of it. Like it it just seems like it's compounding,
- 34:50Speaker 2: and I do I almost feel like there's something in
- 34:52Speaker 2: the NATS system that they really seem to struggle to
- 34:55Speaker 2: take care of arms. I don't know if that's fair
- 34:58Speaker 2: or not. Maybe it's just Sikora. It's here that his
- 35:02Speaker 2: fate is causing me this this concernation, But it seems
- 35:05Speaker 2: like you get through reports it's kind of Ricky Teeman
- 35:08Speaker 2: esque as well. That's like he's great, he's gonna be okay,
- 35:12Speaker 2: it he's gonna be okay. It's he'n be okay. No,
- 35:13Speaker 2: he went under the knife. Like it feels a little
- 35:15Speaker 2: bit like that for both of these guys, and it's
- 35:19Speaker 2: it's concerning because you know, he he's not pitched that
- 35:23Speaker 2: much at the high level. He has forty seven innings
- 35:25Speaker 2: at double A and he's walked six guys per nine there,
- 35:30Speaker 2: so like the stuff was electric, but electric, uh you know,
- 35:35Speaker 2: Ricky Vaughn had electric stuff, and that it's it's not
- 35:39Speaker 2: always the most successful. So I'm I'm out. I'm out
- 35:42Speaker 2: on Susana at this point.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so too. And I think, like I said,
- 35:46Speaker 1: I'm getting Daniel spino vibes here too, where it's like
- 35:49Speaker 1: once so talented, Yeah, once you're starting to compound some
- 35:53Speaker 1: like major injuries and a little bit like Tetaman too,
- 35:55Speaker 1: where it's like shoulder, elbow, shoulder, uh me me elbow,
- 36:02Speaker 1: like not great stuff. So I think I'm in the
- 36:06Speaker 1: same boat where if you do have Harlene's Susana, try
- 36:10Speaker 1: to capitalize on what value you can salvage from him,
- 36:12Speaker 1: because the types of injuries he's going through are not
- 36:16Speaker 1: ones that tend to turn out very well. Okay, Well,
- 36:19Speaker 1: with that we are at the end of our news
- 36:21Speaker 1: and notes. We do just have one quick calendar update
- 36:25Speaker 1: on the baseball card releases, where well, first we will
- 36:29Speaker 1: be talking Bowman Chrome twenty twenty five next week, so
- 36:32Speaker 1: that releases on September twenty fourth. Come back here next week.
- 36:35Speaker 1: We will do the overview of the checklist and get
- 36:37Speaker 1: into all the ins and outs of the rookie cards
- 36:42Speaker 1: and chase cards and so on and so forth. Otherwise
- 36:45Speaker 1: we had Panini three and two push back another week.
- 36:48Speaker 1: They just kind of Panini gets the short end of
- 36:51Speaker 1: the stick on their releases, and I've noticed this summer
- 36:54Speaker 1: they will shuffle those around forever because I mean, sorry
- 36:58Speaker 1: for the one person out there who Panini three and
- 37:00Speaker 1: two is your favorite product, but you're gonna have to
- 37:02Speaker 1: wait another couple of weeks. With that, we're going to
- 37:05Speaker 1: wrap up and we will take a short break. We're
- 37:07Speaker 1: going to be back on the other end to talk
- 37:09Speaker 1: about stashes from baseball card perspectives for both the playoffs
- 37:15Speaker 1: and Japanese stars that might be arriving in the off season.
- 37:19Speaker 1: So stick around, all right, Welcome back everybody. So what
- 37:40Speaker 1: we're going to talk about for our main segment, here
- 37:42Speaker 1: are cards of players who we are looking to maybe
- 37:46Speaker 1: pick up in lou Of, well not in lou Of,
- 37:49Speaker 1: but in advance of the postseason, just being right around
- 37:53Speaker 1: the corner and really the postseason is one of the
- 37:56Speaker 1: times of the year where the values of cards can
- 38:00Speaker 1: really spike, or they can just kind of really find
- 38:04Speaker 1: different echelons than they have throughout the season because everybody's
- 38:07Speaker 1: watching just a few baseball games. You see some big
- 38:10Speaker 1: moments they really go down in baseball history, and you
- 38:13Speaker 1: want to go out there and commemorate it by picking
- 38:16Speaker 1: up a card if it's one of your favorite teams
- 38:18Speaker 1: and favorite players, or if you're just a big time
- 38:21Speaker 1: card collector like guys will put together you know, binders
- 38:25Speaker 1: of you know, alcs, MVPs and lcsmvps, World Series MVPs,
- 38:31Speaker 1: lots and lots of different lists that you can get
- 38:33Speaker 1: on and then that creates something to be collectible. So
- 38:36Speaker 1: really what this was inspired by, if you go back
- 38:38Speaker 1: to the end of last year's postseason, we noted that
- 38:43Speaker 1: the Tommy Edmund market just went through the roof when
- 38:46Speaker 1: he had that crazy World Series won the MVP. Oh no, no,
- 38:50Speaker 1: I'm mistaken. Freddy Freeman won the NLCS MVP went to
- 38:54Speaker 1: Tommy Edmund, But when he had a couple of big
- 38:57Speaker 1: hits in the World Series two became a legend for
- 38:59Speaker 1: the Dodger had a pretty small card market because just
- 39:04Speaker 1: not very many releases given the way it came through
- 39:06Speaker 1: that cardinal system and classics supply and demand economics kicked in.
- 39:11Speaker 1: So we've looked at the teams out there they're going
- 39:14Speaker 1: to the postseason and tried to identify some players where
- 39:17Speaker 1: I think, you know, a similar phenomenon could happen. So
- 39:19Speaker 1: you've got a couple of weeks to pick up in
- 39:21Speaker 1: some Nationals cards or it's a shout out too where
- 39:24Speaker 1: some of these guys are probably buried in really cheap
- 39:28Speaker 1: like ten for a dollar boxes or even your commons
- 39:33Speaker 1: if you're a big time collector and ripper and you
- 39:35Speaker 1: just kind of have a stack of rookie cards the
- 39:38Speaker 1: way I do. Sometimes these just base cards will go
- 39:42Speaker 1: up to five bucks and you can you can turn
- 39:45Speaker 1: a little bit of money on eBay pretty quickly. So
- 39:48Speaker 1: with that intro, is there any magic formula you put
- 39:51Speaker 1: together brew or is this a little bit of like
- 39:54Speaker 1: a hunt and peck and feel in terms of the
- 39:57Speaker 1: art of trying to figure out which players you want
- 40:00Speaker 1: to pursue.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean maybe a little bit of are, but
- 40:02Speaker 2: definitely I went with a little size here and the
- 40:05Speaker 2: theory I went with, was I want decent sized markets
- 40:10Speaker 2: for the players. I'm picking them because when we've seen
- 40:12Speaker 2: this in the past, it's been the Dodgers guy. It's
- 40:14Speaker 2: gonna be somebody that like just lights up the stage
- 40:18Speaker 2: and has been from a market that traditionally buys cards
- 40:21Speaker 2: at a decent rate, which is gonna be able to
- 40:23Speaker 2: give enough demand to translate. Also looking for guys that generally,
- 40:30Speaker 2: to your point, don't have a robust card market or
- 40:33Speaker 2: availability in the card market, so having them is not
- 40:37Speaker 2: necessarily the easiest thing to do, and so they're gonna
- 40:42Speaker 2: kind of pop and that the supply is gonna be low.
- 40:46Speaker 2: But also guys that like have made a name for them,
- 40:48Speaker 2: just haven't been a name on the national stage. And
- 40:51Speaker 2: I'm looking for the role players. I'm looking for those
- 40:53Speaker 2: middle guys because all these guys that have seemed to
- 40:56Speaker 2: pop in the past, it hasn't been Gough Tanis, it
- 40:59Speaker 2: hasn't been Judges, it hasn't been those stars, because everybody
- 41:02Speaker 2: already knew they were stars. Everyone is already collective of that. Sure,
- 41:04Speaker 2: their market jumped up a little bit, but your point,
- 41:08Speaker 2: I think Tommy Edmon was a great example last year,
- 41:10Speaker 2: Like going into the playoffs, you could have bought a
- 41:12Speaker 2: Tommy Edmund autograph rookie card for thirty dollars. I'm thinking
- 41:17Speaker 2: like a Stadium Club chrome auto, which, by the way,
- 41:19Speaker 2: if you haven't seen a fantastic card used to own it,
- 41:22Speaker 2: don't anymore. Because the playoffs last year and that card,
- 41:25Speaker 2: I want to say five x and price overnight. When
- 41:29Speaker 2: he just went off and then got that MVP, his
- 41:33Speaker 2: card market was unbelievable. And that came because he's that
- 41:37Speaker 2: role player he did wasn't the biggest name for that
- 41:40Speaker 2: that team. So that's kind of the method that I
- 41:44Speaker 2: used as I looked at the looked at guys. So
- 41:47Speaker 2: with that, without further ado, first guy I'm going with
- 41:50Speaker 2: is Addison Barger for the Blue Jays, And with that
- 41:55Speaker 2: description all applied to Barger, blue Jays market actually is
- 41:59Speaker 2: pretty decent because their Canada's team and so it's a
- 42:02Speaker 2: little sneaky card market there, but they do buy pretty
- 42:04Speaker 2: gosh darn well people support there's a wide, wide breadth
- 42:08Speaker 2: of collectors in the Canadian market. This is the guy
- 42:12Speaker 2: that's hit well this year, one to eleven RC plus
- 42:16Speaker 2: hit twenty bombs. He's seventy two RBIs over undred twenty
- 42:19Speaker 2: four games. He has been like he's the cleanup hitter
- 42:22Speaker 2: there for the Blue Jays, but he's buried behind like
- 42:27Speaker 2: Vlad Guerrero, Boba, Schett, Dalton, Varshow, George Spring or all
- 42:31Speaker 2: these other bigger names. And I don't think ads In Barger,
- 42:35Speaker 2: for a non fantasy baseball playing card collector, has like
- 42:40Speaker 2: really hit mainstream. And if you go look at his
- 42:43Speaker 2: like available cards of the market, I don't think he
- 42:45Speaker 2: has a tops auto out there at all. You're really
- 42:50Speaker 2: talking don Ross Prism, you know, maybe even select autos,
- 42:57Speaker 2: Elite extra Panini stuff like it is. It's it's thin
- 43:02Speaker 2: what he actually has out there. So he's gonna if
- 43:06Speaker 2: he's the kind of guy that gets absolutely the talent
- 43:08Speaker 2: to go off and like I could just see it now.
- 43:10Speaker 2: We're like the Alcs and Adison Barger takes out the
- 43:14Speaker 2: Yankees or something like that, and oh my goodness, that
- 43:18Speaker 2: market is through the roof. Is absolutely can happen. So
- 43:21Speaker 2: he's the first guy I've got a little little target
- 43:23Speaker 2: out here for because nobody's nobody's really thinking about the
- 43:27Speaker 2: Adison Barger card market right now.
- 43:29Speaker 1: No, I don't think so well, there also isn't much
- 43:32Speaker 1: of one because there's just not too many cards. Like
- 43:34Speaker 1: you said, there's he's never signed he must not have
- 43:37Speaker 1: ever signed a contract with Bowman Slash Tops because he
- 43:41Speaker 1: doesn't have a Bowman Auto either, has never been in
- 43:44Speaker 1: a Bowman set. Just showed up in Top's Chrome update
- 43:47Speaker 1: and Holiday last year with a couple of Top couple
- 43:51Speaker 1: of Tops now releases, So it's a very limited set
- 43:54Speaker 1: of cards for Addison Barger, which makes it tough. Like
- 43:57Speaker 1: if you're a Blue Jays fan, he's one of your favorites.
- 44:00Speaker 1: It also if he does have an iconic moment in
- 44:02Speaker 1: the playoffs this year, there's gonna be no as a
- 44:06Speaker 1: Barge rookie cards available anymore because the Blue Jays do
- 44:09Speaker 1: have a pretty robust collecting market overall, like you've noticed.
- 44:14Speaker 1: So it's like a it's a tough choice because it's
- 44:18Speaker 1: already inflated. Like you could see, the prices on Barger
- 44:21Speaker 1: cards are pretty high already, but it's gonna go higher
- 44:25Speaker 1: if something happens with him in the postseason, and so
- 44:28Speaker 1: do you pay that price if he's one of your players.
- 44:30Speaker 1: It's like one of the ultimate conundrums in collecting.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Absolutely This is the kind of guy that if you're
- 44:37Speaker 2: like a card show and you're going through the dollar
- 44:39Speaker 2: Ben you find like a rash of his colored rookies
- 44:41Speaker 2: or something like that, they're much more valuably think and
- 44:44Speaker 2: that's the stuff to pick up. So it might be
- 44:47Speaker 2: a little too late now, but you got a few
- 44:49Speaker 2: weeks to still grab a few of these of as
- 44:51Speaker 2: some barger cards. So anyway, where'd you go? What's your philosophy?
- 44:54Speaker 2: Is there anything specific that you're looking at as you're
- 44:56Speaker 2: digging for these guys?
- 44:58Speaker 1: No, I mean, I think you nailed most of the hallmarks. Maybe,
- 45:01Speaker 1: like the one additional kind of consideration I like to
- 45:04Speaker 1: try to think about is just larger picture implications in
- 45:09Speaker 1: terms of is this dude on some sort of trajectory
- 45:12Speaker 1: where you could make an argument that in five years
- 45:15Speaker 1: we start talking about him being a Hall of Fame
- 45:18Speaker 1: track or something where it really kind of takes that
- 45:21Speaker 1: next level of just endearing itself into the hobby, either
- 45:25Speaker 1: because it's a player that has that extra flare and
- 45:28Speaker 1: flash that everybody remembers, or like I said, it's it's
- 45:31Speaker 1: something where you become one of the all time greats.
- 45:34Speaker 1: So the first one I kind of picked with that
- 45:36Speaker 1: in mind is Hunter Brown from the Houston Astros. We've
- 45:40Speaker 1: talked about him recently just because he won that Picture
- 45:44Speaker 1: of the Month and he's got a pretty nice set
- 45:47Speaker 1: of cards out there because of like we put like
- 45:50Speaker 1: the All Aces card into our PC for when he
- 45:53Speaker 1: came up for a Picture of the Month, but lots
- 45:55Speaker 1: of fun sets that he's been in over the past
- 45:58Speaker 1: few years, and it's all realtectively affordable. I'm going on
- 46:02Speaker 1: eBay right now just looking for like a base Tops
- 46:05Speaker 1: Chrome auto for Hunter Brown, who again reached it first
- 46:09Speaker 1: All Star Game this year. But you're looking at a
- 46:12Speaker 1: price where it's like twenty five to fifty bucks. That's
- 46:15Speaker 1: not too bad for a Tops Chrome first or Rookie
- 46:20Speaker 1: auto for a player of this caliber. When you're looking
- 46:22Speaker 1: at somebody who you know over the past two seasons
- 46:25Speaker 1: now has put together to a two eighty eight ERA
- 46:30Speaker 1: eight and a half war over the two seasons. I'm
- 46:33Speaker 1: looking at Baseball Reference, so that tells you just how
- 46:36Speaker 1: great he's been, and he's really turned himself into one
- 46:40Speaker 1: of the elite arms of the league overall. If the
- 46:45Speaker 1: Astros girl on a deep run here, Hunter Brown has
- 46:48Speaker 1: a Hallmark game. In the playoffs, I think you're going
- 46:51Speaker 1: to see a lot of these prices take a little
- 46:53Speaker 1: bit of a tick up. And he is only twenty six,
- 46:56Speaker 1: So right now he's amidst a six war season per
- 47:01Speaker 1: Baseball Reference War that's pretty elite stuff in today's game.
- 47:06Speaker 1: And so eventually they're gonna have to put some pictures
- 47:10Speaker 1: into the Hall of Fame, you know what I mean.
- 47:11Speaker 1: And he's got three straight seasons of double digit wins
- 47:14Speaker 1: only twenty six. You could see where, you know, Hunter Brown,
- 47:18Speaker 1: if he keeps doing this for another ten years, it's
- 47:20Speaker 1: gonna be on the precipice.
- 47:22Speaker 2: Yeah. I think this is a great call. Like Hunter Brown,
- 47:25Speaker 2: like I steered away from pictures for the most part
- 47:27Speaker 2: here because most of your pictures in the postseason like
- 47:30Speaker 2: they're gonna be relied upon their big names, and for
- 47:32Speaker 2: whatever reason, Hunter Brown just does not seem to like
- 47:35Speaker 2: hit the upper echelon from a notoriety perspective. He just
- 47:39Speaker 2: continues to be unbelievable but not get enough credit for
- 47:42Speaker 2: it on the national stage. So I think that you
- 47:44Speaker 2: have a good point there because, like I've looked many times,
- 47:47Speaker 2: I've got a number of his cards and like, I
- 47:49Speaker 2: just like, oh, this market's gotta be way better. And
- 47:51Speaker 2: I think it's a picture thing, right, generally pictures. It's yeah,
- 47:56Speaker 2: Pitcher's Astros just doesn't play it well, but he absolutely
- 47:59Speaker 2: could you know, win a series for the Astros, go
- 48:02Speaker 2: deep into a game, do something unbelievable, and that's that's
- 48:06Speaker 2: people are gonna recognize what that means. So I think
- 48:09Speaker 2: this is this is a good call.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Okay, who is your next pick?
- 48:14Speaker 2: Well, I went with I took a stretch on this one.
- 48:16Speaker 2: I'm gonna I'm gonna own it before I say it.
- 48:19Speaker 2: And I went with Auto Kemp for the Phillies because
- 48:24Speaker 2: we've talked about him before here and he's just got
- 48:26Speaker 2: this really steaky electric skill set that I just don't
- 48:30Speaker 2: understand why he's not getting more playing time with the Phillies.
- 48:33Speaker 2: And he's been called up recently with some injuries and
- 48:38Speaker 2: he's been playing really, really well. And I think he's
- 48:41Speaker 2: the kind of guy that, like, no, he's very unassuming,
- 48:44Speaker 2: nobody's really thinking about him, and he could absolutely, you know,
- 48:48Speaker 2: win a few games. He could, he could have some
- 48:50Speaker 2: amazing defense, he could he could make a name for
- 48:52Speaker 2: himself and really summoned himself as like that third base
- 48:55Speaker 2: in the future for the Phillies in this postseason. I
- 48:57Speaker 2: absolutely think that that can happen. And then you look
- 49:00Speaker 2: at his cards. He has almost nothing. He has like
- 49:03Speaker 2: a tops Now call up card, And then I was,
- 49:05Speaker 2: I was, you know, he has a number of those
- 49:07Speaker 2: minor league cards that you and I love, And I've
- 49:08Speaker 2: actually seen a few like auto of his minor league
- 49:11Speaker 2: cards in person, autos going already for like fifty or
- 49:13Speaker 2: sixty dollars because there's nothing out there. And I think
- 49:17Speaker 2: this is one of those ones where, like the top
- 49:19Speaker 2: Now call up cards, if you have a few numbered
- 49:22Speaker 2: of those cards something like that, that you're probably paying
- 49:24Speaker 2: maybe ten fifteen dollars like that right now he goes off,
- 49:28Speaker 2: those things are going to go through the roof because
- 49:30Speaker 2: it's all that's out there. And so I think that
- 49:32Speaker 2: the price of injury is really low here, and at
- 49:35Speaker 2: the end of the day, it's not a big penalty
- 49:37Speaker 2: because he doesn't have much on the card market and
- 49:39Speaker 2: still still some of his first cards. Again, he doesn't
- 49:41Speaker 2: have a bowman, doesn't have anything like that. And I
- 49:44Speaker 2: just think that this profile like screams like streaky breakout
- 49:48Speaker 2: in the playoffs at the end of the day. So
- 49:50Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with Kemp, even though the supply is
- 49:54Speaker 2: really really thin. I think that's going to actually play
- 49:56Speaker 2: to his advantage if he does anything in the postseason.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just going to be a few minor cards really,
- 50:00Speaker 1: so it.
- 50:01Speaker 2: Is like just just sneak like and nobody's thinking about it.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Just sneak a few of those on your in your
- 50:05Speaker 2: collection right now and they could pay up off handsomely.
- 50:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so. I think that's a great call
- 50:10Speaker 1: because I don't think that Alec Bomas later come back
- 50:13Speaker 1: anytime soon with that system his shoulder. So Kemp should
- 50:17Speaker 1: have third base all to himself, and this Phillies team
- 50:20Speaker 1: is built for this playoff run.
- 50:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's that is a market there, That is
- 50:24Speaker 2: a card market. Philly's Phillies fans like to buy their cards.
- 50:28Speaker 2: All right.
- 50:29Speaker 1: Well, I mean I'm sticking in Philly for my next
- 50:31Speaker 1: pick because I think this is honestly, this is the
- 50:33Speaker 1: Tommy Edmund played to a t. So it's a little
- 50:36Speaker 1: bit maybe of cheating because I'm going with Harrison Bader,
- 50:40Speaker 1: who first, have you seen what he's been doing with
- 50:45Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Phillies since he arrived from.
- 50:48Speaker 2: And I saw it early because like I've I feel
- 50:51Speaker 2: like Baterer's dumb this, like this saved discussion like three
- 50:54Speaker 2: or four times. He just hasn't fully done it, Like
- 50:56Speaker 2: he like wherever he goes all of a sudden, because
- 50:58Speaker 2: he's an amazing person at he's a great defender, and
- 51:01Speaker 2: then all of a sudden, like he hits for like
- 51:03Speaker 2: a month and everybody's like, oh my god, this is
- 51:05Speaker 2: the guy. And I feel like he's just keeps playing
- 51:08Speaker 2: that on repeat. He just hasn't done it in the
- 51:10Speaker 2: postseason and so yeah, like he's just again doing great
- 51:14Speaker 2: things for the Phillies and like people just love them,
- 51:18Speaker 2: just love them. So I've tried to sell his cards
- 51:20Speaker 2: like seventeen times now because being a four cardinal, I've
- 51:23Speaker 2: got quite a few of them sitting around and Mark
- 51:26Speaker 2: doesn't quite get there, but he pikes. He spikes every
- 51:29Speaker 2: once in a while. Yeah.
- 51:30Speaker 1: So, so far with Philly since arriving at the trade deadline,
- 51:33Speaker 1: in forty games, he's put up four homers, twenty six runs,
- 51:35Speaker 1: score at fifteen RBI, three point thirty three three ninety
- 51:39Speaker 1: two five oh seven slash line. That's a one fifty WRC.
- 51:42Speaker 1: Plus he's put up one point four war fangrafts war
- 51:46Speaker 1: in those forty games, so that's you know, you're looking
- 51:49Speaker 1: at just about a six and a half war pace.
- 51:54Speaker 1: I mean, I do think he has found something in
- 51:57Speaker 1: his game where he started to settle out for a
- 52:00Speaker 1: little bit more. You can see it's a career hard
- 52:02Speaker 1: hit rate that is the best of his career. Between
- 52:05Speaker 1: Philadelphia and Minnesota this year also has been really posting
- 52:10Speaker 1: a great barrel rate across both locations. Actually it was
- 52:13Speaker 1: higher in Minnesota, an eleven and a half percent barrel
- 52:16Speaker 1: rate in Minnesota compared to ten and a half with
- 52:19Speaker 1: the Phillies. But you can see this already in the
- 52:22Speaker 1: market where I was scrolling back, you can see the
- 52:25Speaker 1: tail end of like right the tail end of his
- 52:28Speaker 1: Minnesota time where you can pick up one of his
- 52:31Speaker 1: base tops chrome autos for five to ten dollars. You
- 52:35Speaker 1: can pick up actually I'm looking right now, there's a
- 52:38Speaker 1: green sapphire of fifty that went back at the end
- 52:41Speaker 1: of June for fifteen bucks. It's starting to tick up
- 52:45Speaker 1: because the base autos now are around fifteen ish. There's
- 52:49Speaker 1: something that will go ten some fifteen some twenty and
- 52:52Speaker 1: the Bowman Chrome models are starting to come out of
- 52:55Speaker 1: the woodworks too, So this is the market's already picking
- 52:58Speaker 1: up here on Harrison Bader, and I think once everybody
- 53:00Speaker 1: kind of tunes in and sees how just fun he
- 53:03Speaker 1: can be when he's having a great time playing baseball,
- 53:07Speaker 1: this beata market's about to shoot through the roof. So
- 53:11Speaker 1: I think we also have a decent crossover of like
- 53:14Speaker 1: Cardinals baseball card collectors that listen to this show, go
- 53:18Speaker 1: through those boxes, dig out your Harrison Beader rookie cards.
- 53:21Speaker 1: They were back in twenty sixteen for Bowman Chrome first
- 53:25Speaker 1: or Bowman First and twenty eighteen for rookie cards. Because
- 53:28Speaker 1: I guarantee you there are Harrison Bader autos buried in
- 53:33Speaker 1: dollar boxes all across the country. So dig them out,
- 53:37Speaker 1: flip them for an easy twenty bucks on eBay, and
- 53:40Speaker 1: enjoy your life.
- 53:42Speaker 2: I think it's a great call. I still love me
- 53:44Speaker 2: some Harrison Bader. All right, Well with that, we are going.
- 53:48Speaker 1: We've got one more pick apiece for the postseason before
- 53:50Speaker 1: you get into those Japanese guys, who's their last guy
- 53:53Speaker 1: for postseason pickups?
- 53:55Speaker 2: All right, I'm going to go to probably the biggest
- 53:57Speaker 2: card market, and there's two guesses. If you don't know
- 54:00Speaker 2: what that is, that's either New York or LA, and
- 54:03Speaker 2: it is LA. I don't think there's really any question
- 54:06Speaker 2: about that if you do sell a card here there.
- 54:09Speaker 2: And I'm going to go with Andy Pahes. He is
- 54:13Speaker 2: absolutely killing things in the LA lineup. He's he's really
- 54:22Speaker 2: made a name for himself out there, but he is
- 54:25Speaker 2: buried at the end of the day. He is buried
- 54:27Speaker 2: behind so many guys that nobody really is talking about
- 54:32Speaker 2: what he has been able to do this this year.
- 54:35Speaker 2: So I think he's the kind of guy that, so
- 54:38Speaker 2: look at this year's line He's played one hundred and
- 54:40Speaker 2: forty five games, twenty five homers, thirteen steels, two seventy
- 54:44Speaker 2: seven averages, is a one sixteen WRC plus, Like he
- 54:46Speaker 2: has been absolutely valuable, but he's just so buried under
- 54:52Speaker 2: that depth chart that people don't think about him as
- 54:55Speaker 2: the guy that drives drives that team forward. And so
- 54:59Speaker 2: I think he has the talent to just go off
- 55:01Speaker 2: for a series here and just absolutely shoot his values
- 55:04Speaker 2: through the roof. And we talked about guys that have
- 55:07Speaker 2: cards out there, he doesn't have a whole lot like
- 55:09Speaker 2: early miners or things like that. There's just not a lot.
- 55:12Speaker 2: But in the last year or so, he's gotten a
- 55:14Speaker 2: lot of cards out there, signed a lot of autos,
- 55:16Speaker 2: things like that, and they're still relatively affordable, Like they're
- 55:20Speaker 2: eight to twenty dollars cards like autos for him, and
- 55:26Speaker 2: they're relatively accessible. Is twenty twenty four tops was his
- 55:31Speaker 2: rookie auto year, and so those are out there, like
- 55:34Speaker 2: a refractor you can pick up for maybe forty bucks,
- 55:36Speaker 2: a base for maybe twenty And there's just a lot
- 55:41Speaker 2: to say there for a guy that plays in this
- 55:44Speaker 2: huge market that he can absolutely go off. And so
- 55:47Speaker 2: I don't think it's like a guy that we don't know.
- 55:49Speaker 2: I just don't think he's hit the card collecting community
- 55:52Speaker 2: because he hasn't had the moment, and I think this
- 55:55Speaker 2: postseason absolutely can give him that moment when you know
- 55:58Speaker 2: when Freeman No Tanyir fallen off, MOOKI hasn't done the
- 56:02Speaker 2: thing hes to do. Andy Payes is gonna come in
- 56:05Speaker 2: and just go like three homewer game or something crazy,
- 56:08Speaker 2: and I think he has the skill set to do it.
- 56:10Speaker 2: So he's the guy that I'm I'm keeping an eye
- 56:12Speaker 2: out in the biggest market, I had to get somebody
- 56:14Speaker 2: from the Dodgers.
- 56:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I think this is also a great call because
- 56:18Speaker 1: it's a little bit in the Hunter Brown vein too,
- 56:21Speaker 1: where Andy Pyees is only twenty four years old, he
- 56:25Speaker 1: is not a free agent, and the Dodgers have no
- 56:28Speaker 1: reason really to move him until twenty thirty one. And
- 56:31Speaker 1: so you look at the timeframe where he's with the
- 56:34Speaker 1: Dodgers here, they're gonna be the perennial World Series favorites,
- 56:38Speaker 1: you know, for the next maybe every year. Twenty thirty
- 56:41Speaker 1: one might be the perennial favorites. So if this is
- 56:44Speaker 1: a guy who can rack up three, four or five
- 56:47Speaker 1: rings with the Dodgers, he enters that team level pantheon
- 56:51Speaker 1: of where like the card collecting market could really boost
- 56:55Speaker 1: it because of who it is and the team and
- 56:58Speaker 1: what it means that team. So really, I think an
- 57:01Speaker 1: important kind of thing to consider as you're looking at
- 57:03Speaker 1: those Andy Payes prices out there.
- 57:06Speaker 2: All right, close us up. Who's the last guy that
- 57:09Speaker 2: you are keeping an eye on as we hit the
- 57:11Speaker 2: playoffs here that could make a big name for himself.
- 57:14Speaker 1: Yeah, So, I mean, I don't actually know I didn't
- 57:17Speaker 1: put him in as a kind of playoff guy initially
- 57:20Speaker 1: because you know this, actually I was when we were
- 57:24Speaker 1: brought up this topic, guys thinking a little bit long
- 57:26Speaker 1: term two in terms of off season pickups to pair
- 57:29Speaker 1: with your Japanese players and guys who I could just
- 57:33Speaker 1: see the market kind of taking off. But then in
- 57:35Speaker 1: the meantime, the Guardians have also entered their way into
- 57:38Speaker 1: the wild card conversation, so it could work that. I'm
- 57:42Speaker 1: looking at Kyle man Ziro's market right now. It is
- 57:45Speaker 1: extremely affordable. You're looking at Bowman first autos of the
- 57:49Speaker 1: Chrome and Tops Chrome autos when he was well, those
- 57:53Speaker 1: Bowman ones were going to be with the Rays, so
- 57:55Speaker 1: that's going to change that market a little bit. But THEO,
- 57:58Speaker 1: but the Tops Chrome rookie card autos for Manzardo are
- 58:02Speaker 1: going to be in that Cleveland Guardians uniform, which will help.
- 58:05Speaker 1: But I mean can be had for ten to twenty
- 58:08Speaker 1: bucks for most of them, Parallels go pretty cheap forty
- 58:11Speaker 1: bucks in under. This is a guy who I think
- 58:14Speaker 1: is going to be on a lot of kind of
- 58:16Speaker 1: like hype breakout lists going into next year's season and
- 58:21Speaker 1: fantasy draft. And I mean there's every reason for him
- 58:24Speaker 1: to be because have you been aware of the second
- 58:28Speaker 1: half of KYLEL. Manzardo so far? It's gotten a little
- 58:30Speaker 1: absurd here as we again we're speaking here on September seventeenth,
- 58:35Speaker 1: So since the All Star Break, forty eight games, two
- 58:38Speaker 1: eighty average, eleven homers, seventeen runs, thirty RBI, and especially,
- 58:44Speaker 1: I mean, this is why they shipped Carlo Santana out
- 58:46Speaker 1: of town, is because Kyle Manzardo has really rounded into
- 58:50Speaker 1: that player that we've been looking for, where I mean,
- 58:53Speaker 1: this is a thirty five to home forty home or
- 58:56Speaker 1: bat just kind of waiting to happen, only twenty five
- 58:59Speaker 1: years old, and you just kind of put that mix
- 59:02Speaker 1: of ingredients together. You can see this guy maybe putting
- 59:05Speaker 1: up even like pushing something like forty to fifty homers
- 59:08Speaker 1: maybe next year if he unlocks another level. If you're
- 59:12Speaker 1: looking for somebody who can go kind of cal Raley
- 59:14Speaker 1: going into twenty twenty six, and we saw what happened
- 59:16Speaker 1: to cal Raley's market. It's insane. It's absolutely insane. I
- 59:20Speaker 1: just moved a bunch of cal Raley just base tops
- 59:24Speaker 1: chrome rookies for five bucks a pop. They are overprinted
- 59:29Speaker 1: out the wazoo, just the way these Manzardo ones are,
- 59:32Speaker 1: But you can pick up a lot pretty cheap. I
- 59:34Speaker 1: think for Manzardo, stash them away and hope that he
- 59:37Speaker 1: does attain that fifty homer mark going into next year
- 59:40Speaker 1: in the future. So what do you think about Manzardo here?
- 59:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's a ton of potential here. You're right,
- 59:45Speaker 2: like we've always thought he's got a ton of talent,
- 59:47Speaker 2: and it does seem like things are coming together and
- 59:49Speaker 2: there's not like there's not very much luck in the profile,
- 59:52Speaker 2: like for that second half looks like it looks pretty
- 59:54Speaker 2: much legitimate. What I think is actually intriguing is that
- 59:58Speaker 2: you made the comment the gardens are not out of
- 59:59Speaker 2: the place off race. This is the kind of guy
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: that could like carry them to it and then through it,
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: and that would just like put them into a different
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: echelon for the card market. I think that would be
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: really really fun to see. So I'm not ruling them
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: out for this year, but I think you had a
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: good point, like this is a good stash for next
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: year and especially as when we can do the off season.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: You know, we talked to this before buying baseball cards
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: in November and December and January and things like that.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: That market is low. It is low, people are not
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: thinking about it. That's the time to buy these things.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Kind of guys up and look for the next season,
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: because it's all gonna take is you know, hot spring
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: or hot hot month, start the season and there's a
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: value there and you know they can maybe they go
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: all cal rally on you and their cards go through
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: the roof like ten x what they can be. So
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: there's a lot worse buys than Kyle Manzardo. So I
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: think it's a good pick. All right.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Well, that wraps up the kind of like postseason guys
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: that we're looking at. So you have become the foremost
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: rasball expert on the Japanese card market. So I figured
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: this is a good time to consult you because now
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: is the time to start tucking away some of these
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: Japanese superstars. You know, the past two years, we've seen
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: Yoshinobo Yamamoto come over, We've seen Roki Sasaki come over,
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: and I mean one factor I guess we should probably
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: think about it is maybe tariffs in the US in
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: terms of this going forward. I do know that like
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: it's made a little bit of the shipping chaotic, I
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: would say for eBay, as you know, those have been
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: implemented across the board, and it used to be pretty
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: easy to be able to tap into the Japanese baseball
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: card market through eBay, get a ship load of actual
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: like Sasaki and Yamamoto cards, bring them over a little
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: bit early, and then kind of be the first to
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: the market. You know, if you can ship them out
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: when they're signed to their play to their new teams
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: from a US location versus a Japanese location, that gives
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: you your leg up. Plus if you maybe are at
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: shows great trade bait as well as being able to
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: slap them down live in front of people instead of
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: you know, the theoretical eBay listing that might be in
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Japan to show them what you got. So, like I said,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: it might be a little more chaotic, but if anything,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: that gives you even all the more reason to get
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: in on trying to get these players early. So there
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: are different types of cards over in Japan. You know,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: there are Tops cards, but there's also BBM is a
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: really big brand over there, and so you can find
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: all sorts of cards in English and Japanese. Rookie cards autos, patches.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Everything that it's in the American market in the North
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: American market is over there in Japan too. So with
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: all that said, Brew, I know that you've been really
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: great at playing this market with Yamamodo and Sasaki the
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: last few years. What players are you targeting here going
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: into the twenty twenty five offseason that you think could
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: be posted pretty soon and have similar types of hype.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's there's a three pack here, and
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: I think there's one that I would be shocked if
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: he was not posted, like it just makes all the
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: sense in the world. And then there's another two that
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: I think, uh definitely have the potential U for that
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: that to happen. So let's start with the big name here,
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: and that is twenty five year old Munataka Murakami. He
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: is an absolute beast. If you want to talk about
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: like pure stars of leagues like Murakami in Japan right
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: now is basically like how I want to say, is
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: your cal Rally, is your Aaron Judge? Like it is
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: like one of the top players. We're gonna go back
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: to his his kind of what put him on the
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: map as a twenty two year old in twenty twenty two,
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: the guy hit three eighteen with fifty six homers, one
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: hundred and thirty four RBIs and twelve steals well nearly
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: walking as many times as he struck out. That was
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: a wr R plus two twenty five over a full season. Unbelievable.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: And then and then so the last few years he's
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: had down seasons where he's averaged like thirty homers, hit
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: more like two fifty, and he's he's batted a little
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: bit of injury here and there, strike ups have jumped up,
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: and so it's cooled a little bit on him. And
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: I think this is very similar to kind of the
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: road that Sasaki took, which is like he came up
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: really hot and then kind of tailed a little bit.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: But this year he was coming off of injury and
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: so he missed a good part of the season. Through
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: forty four games, he's hit nineteen homers, he has uh
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: got thirty nine RBIs for good for a two to
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: eleven WRC plus. He is peaking at the right time
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: and really really gonna be an intriguing bat to come over.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: He's also a pretty decent uh you know fielder, maybe
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: not the best. He's he's gonna probably end up being
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: more of a first baseman. He plays mostly third over
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: over the pond right now, and so I think that
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: that might be a little bit drawback at the end
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: of the day. But like this, this guy is an
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: absolute beast, and so Murkamie's market is a little bit
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: harder to buy into right now because he is such
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: a star over there that even that market is hot,
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: and so you're trying to buy, you know, a good
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: relic for communists, like forty fifty bucks. You're trying to
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: They don't really do autos too much. There are some,
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: but they're very very rare over there. They do fasimile autos,
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: they do gold and silver ones, and so those you're
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: going to probably pay ten fifteen dollars like that. And
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: then they have some amazing, amazing inserts, especially that BBM
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: set that I have really seen guys like Roki and
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Young Moto like as they come over there. Just beautiful cards.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: They make great card art that you want to plan.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: The other thing i'd call out for a lot of
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: these guys. Tops Chrome started producing cards in the Japanese
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: market in twenty twenty one, and so a lot of
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: people look at those as they're like quote unquote rookie
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: cards like they have them in BBM two, but hard
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: to get their expensive because everybody knows is the rookie card,
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: but a lot of collectors look at their first TOPS
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: card also as one of those that you would look
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: to buy. So murk Comy he's out there. I've personally
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: been buying Mura Comi for over a year because there
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: was a very slight chance that he could come come
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: over last year. But his prices are starting to go
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: up just because of how unbelievable he's been this year,
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: and so if you're looking to buy like his twenty
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: twenty one top scroll, like I said, that was considered
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: like his kind of rookie from a TOPS perspective, The
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: goldruf factor of fifty just sold for about two hundred
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: and forty dollars, and so it is jumping up there,
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: but you're still seeing a lot of the inserts in
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: the five dollars range. The bas is still that five
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: to ten dollars range. But he does have a very
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: robust Japanese card market at this point, so there's a
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: lot a lot out there. But I think he's going
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: to be a guy that gets called over the vast
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: majority of these players that come over get posted go
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: to big market teams. And there's two selling points. There's
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: the second they get posted because all of a sudden,
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: everybody knows who this guy is and they hope their
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: team gets them, and they want to buy the card
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: to have it. And then there's when they sign, and
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: so you want to be ready for both of those.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: So I'll take a breath here. I love Love Murakami.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: You can probably tell. What do you think about Munataka Murakami.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think One thing I want to
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: add is he's got World Baseball Classic cards too that
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: have sold in America, so those will also I think,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: shoot through the roof too when he signs. So look
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: for those cards. They should be much more easy to
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: get your hands on if you don't want to go
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: to the Japanese route. Not only the World Baseball Classic
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: set that kind of came out for the last one,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: but also the tops Now set. He's got cars and
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: all of them, as he was on that team that
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: won the title with Shoho Tani there. The other thing, too,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: is like I can't emphasize enough that this dude is
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: coming over. This offseason, he absolutely is. He plays for
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: the Yakult Swallows, who are the worst team in the
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Central League in NPB. There's no glory to play for
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: on that team, and I think that like it's gonna
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: be like the Sasaki situation where he's not ready to
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: be posted technically to hit that like free agency wall
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: or whatever they have over there. But I think he's
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: going to force his way out because the other factor
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: here is, I mean, it's kind of rote, but the
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: odds on favorite it has got to be the Dodgers.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: And look what corner infield spot opens up this offseason
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: because Max Mountsey has a team option and can tell
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: you they're not going to pick that up. Because I
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: think the Dodgers are probably gonna turn that corner spot
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: that they've dedicated to Max Munsey the past few years
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: into mura taki, mura taki, mura taka murakami. Sorry, that's
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: it's a it's a lot, it's a mouth bowl, especially
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: when we've been podcasting here for an hour and twenty
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: minutes or so. But this dude's gonna be a super star.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: It's gonna be huge. It's eighty great power from Fangrafts too.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: They've already put him in like the prospects spranking, so
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: you can see that the hockey stick is already starting.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: And so if you want to get in on any
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: Murakami cards, you gotta do it now. So, yep, this
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: is the great pick. This is the big guy that
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: I knew that we wanted to talk about. But there's
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: still two more that are really big stars and waiting.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: So tell us about the next one that you have
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: started to tuck away.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so the next guy.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: We're gonna go to the pitching side of things here, and.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: I'm gonna I'm gonna just level set this guy between
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: shoto I Managa and Yoshiniba Yamamoto as far as like
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: where where you should be looking at him from like
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: a coming over hype perspective. He's not Yamamo, but he's
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: he's something and this has taught to you Imai, and
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: he's would be looking to come over from the I
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: think Sebu Lions. There's a little bit of question there.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: He's actually gonna be a true free agent after the
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: twenty twenty sixth season, so this is their last chance
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: to post him. That said, they've already agreed to post
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: their other ace Kona Takashi, and that would be posted
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: like it's like going like the Dodger saying, you know what,
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: I just can't do it, and I'm gonna say I'm
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: gonna take my two best pitchers and just send them elsewhere.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: Because Sevil Lions are also a pretty decent team, so
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: like that would be really really hard for them in
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: their fan base. But that's this is the last chance
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: for them to get something out of him. But Imai
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: is going to be twenty eight going into next season,
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: and he's a little bit different than a lot of
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: the pictures over in in Japan, And this is what
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: I actually really really like. He's a power pitcher. You
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: think a lot a lot of these guys coming over
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: they're not full power pitchers. They've got an arsenal, they've got,
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: you know, a lot of different pitches. He's a guy
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: that can bring it ninety nine. He can absolutely do that.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: He's you know, he was he was up in the
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: professional ranks as a twenty year old. So he's now
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: got eight seasons under his belt at this point. So
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: there there's definitely some some innings on it. But in
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: twenty twenty five, one hundred and forty five innings. He
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: has struck out ten per nine, walked two point four
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: per nine, grand ball ry of forty nine ERA of
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: one point six seven. Guy has been basically unhittable, and
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: that's after three straight years of eras in the two
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: threes or two fours, and it is backed up by
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: all the all the peripheral numbers. So this is a
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: guy that absolutely, like he honestly could be the highest
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: paid starting pitcher free agent this year because he is
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: still young. He's still going to be just twenty eight eight,
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: and it's gonna be a weaker free agent classroom starting
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: pitching perspective, So there's just wouldn't be a shock to
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: see him just reel in an absolute deal looking at
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: other pictures that will be twenty eight you know, we're
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: talking like Michael Soroka, like you want to dream on
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: this guy here, And then I think as you look
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: at the card market side of things, like he's pretty cheap,
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: like because it's a picture, and like he's you know,
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: he's not Murra Comi. He's not like he's the top
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: guy over there, and you can absolutely buy you know,
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: a number of his cards for reasonable prices, like you're
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: you're looking at, you know, inserts in the two to
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: three dollars range, the similar autos and maybe the ten
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: fifteen range, maybe some of the golds a little bit
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: higher than that. And you know his rookie cards maybe
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: sixty bucks, things like that, and there's just again really
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: really beautiful cards and not a huge, huge market yet.
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: People just don't know who he is. Where More Comedy
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: was talking about last year in the US, this nobody's
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: really talking about my He's also kind of like the
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: second fiddle, even on his own team from a posting perspective.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: And so this is a guy I'm picking up now
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: because if he's not posted this year, he is gonna
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: be here next year. He's like, because he's gonna be
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: a free Asian next year. He's guaranteed. And so I'm
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: picking this guy up left and right because I think
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: he's gonna have a robust market. People are gonna get
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: really excited about him when he comes over. So anyway,
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: you can't let me talk about the Japanese players on here,
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: I will go on forever. What do you think? Am
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: I crazy? Do I love email a little too much? No?
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: I mean I think this is also the guy, the
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: type of guy we're talking about where I think he
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: I don't know too much about him personally, but just
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: from the pictures, this dude's got flow. He's got some letuce.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: It's like somewhere between Chota Yamanaga and ten Linsecam where
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: just like flows out the back of his cap. And
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: I don't know if he's currently rocking being blonde, but
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: he has gone blonde in the past and looks amazing.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: So I think that there's something to Emi here where
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: it's got a little bit that flare, where Imaniga has
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: had this too, where you know Yamamoto has not, I
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: would say where Yamamoto is kind of a boring dude overall,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: there's not much personality. It seems to me like Imai
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: has more of the Imaniga personality, which I think can
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: make him more fascinating from a card market perspective. So
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: I mean, I think this is a guy who probably
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: doesn't end up on the Dodgers, but the Cubs are
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: probably going to be right there, the Yankees, the Mets,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: there's gonna be a big market team that signs a
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: MI So I think this is a great investment and
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: fun trivia question. Who do you know who leads the
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Sabu Lions in home runs this year?
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: I feel like it's gonna be Eric Tames or somehow,
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: but like, who is it?
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: It's Tyler Nevin, which is great. It's a great cut
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: because I remember writing about him last year when he
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: got hot for like two weeks if you remember that.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: So that's great.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: Waiver wire guys always coming through.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Always, Yeah, they show up everywhere. All right, you've got
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: one more player that you're stashing for those Japanese cards
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: coming over this offseason.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: Who is it? Yep? So this is another one that's
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: not a guarantee to come over this this winter. It
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: is from the Ya Murray Giants, Kazuma Akamoto. The reason
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: I say now guarantee is the Giants do not like
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: to post their players. But he is a guy that,
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: like I think again, gonna be a free agent soon.
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: I believe it's after after next year as well, because
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: he has been in MPB for eight years as well.
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: He was twenty two when he got come up, and
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: he has literally hit every single year phenomenally. He did
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: deal with some injuries this year and so that's kind
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: of helped him back. But like this is like Albert
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: Poole's esque start to a career. He has six seasons
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: to start his career with thirty or more home runs
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: and then he hit twenty seven last year. And it's
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: just unbelievable control of the bat, like you just don't
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: see in our in our game over here. It makes
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: me thinking maybe kind of like an Alex Bregman kind
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: kind of guy who has really good bat control. This year,
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: fifty eight games, eleven homers, three nineteen average, He's walked
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: almost eleven percent of the time, struck out twelve percent
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: of the time. He as a WRC plus of one
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: ninety six. He is a pretty good defender as well.
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: He's probably you know, gonna, you know, might end up
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: over at first base long term because I think, you know,
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: the defense is a little bit different when you when
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: you get over. But again, there's just a ton of
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: ton of power in this bat, and it's just a very,
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: very mature a hitter. So I think, you know, the
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: concern with him is is he gonna be able to
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: hit the fast balls you'll be able to take up
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: because there is kind of a difference as he comes over.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: But like with the power he has, Yeah, the average
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: was going to drop down a little bit. But that's
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: what we're buying these cards for. We're buying the cards
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: for when he gets posted and when he gets signed.
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: And if you like, this is the kind of guy
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: you can sell all day. Just look at those numbers
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: that he's put up over his career, and you're you're
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: gonna be absolutely thrilled if you're if your team signs him,
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: Like he's his career home run in in PB two
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: hundred and forty four already and he's in a age
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: twenty nine season, So I don't know, this guy is
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: is exciting as well. Of all three of these guys,
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: this guy has the lowest card market because he's done
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: it very consistently, but I don't think people expect him
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: to fully be posted. I've been picking up for like
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: refractors of his base in PB from twenty twenty one
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: for like a dollar or two, Like they're just they're
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: incredibly cheap and incredibly available, so they're like, that's what
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: I love about this. There's some low, low risk, high
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: reward because again I think these guys, these guys, all
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: three will make it to the US and as a
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: matter of time and they're going to sign some decent
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: sized contracts.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think this is a great quality with
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: Okamoto and also just a great player because I'm pretty
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: sure I have the card from the tops Chrome NPB
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: twenty twenty one when some of that made it stateside,
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: and I think especially lots of folks will probably have
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: it because those packs are in tons of the blister
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: packs that are sold at like Walgreens and CBS's. And
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: if you're a degenerate card ripper and collector the way
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: you are we are, you know exactly what cards I'm
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: talking about, because they're in these little blister packs that
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: Walgreens for like eight bucks for a couple of hobby packs.
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: And if you've got those base cards, or if you
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: pulled a refractor of Okamoto and then you've just got
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: to lying around, go dig it out, because like brew
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: just said, might be able to turn a couple bucks
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: off of it as he gets signed and people actually
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: recognize who it is where you know, probably ended up
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: in plenty of comments piles, and something that will just
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: kind of tick up from being just above worthless to actually, like,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: you know, a couple bucks in your pocket. You can't
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: beat that for card collecting.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and I will say, just if you play this game,
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: it is a little bit of a tricky game. The
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: one thing I would I would warn is don't wait
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: until the season actually starts. Rokie is a great example.
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: His market was never higher than the moment he was
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: announced coming over and then the moment he signed, and
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: actually probably a little lower than he signed because everybody
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: knew where he was going to sign the entire time,
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: and so that market was incredible. Like you, I remember selling.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: They have what they call is Kira inserts in the
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: BBM sets, which if you think about tops chrome, that
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: would be like a Prism refractor. And I remember signing
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: a Roki one for like fifty when he was posted
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: just just it's an insert. And then I had another one.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: I got it graded. I got a PSA ten, and
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: like it was going for like twenty bucks when the
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: season hit, because he was he was scuffling things like that.
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: I'm like, wait a second, I sold the ungraded the
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: card for one of the you know, two and a
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: half times what I did for the PSA ten. So like,
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: you know, that market will cool if the performance doesn't come.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: On the other side, there's Alos the Otani version like
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: that that can happen as well. So there's a lot
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: of fun that can be had in this marketplace and
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: it's just a different way to look at the hobby.
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: Oh right, Yeah, I think that's gonna wrap us up
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: for this week. So I think that's great suggestions across
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: the board in terms of different levels of investments you
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: can be making on postseason players and Japanese stars. So
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: if you've got anybody that you're thinking about out there,
