- 0:00Take your Bible, if you would, to the 1st or the 5th chapter of
- 0:05First Thessalonians. This is our 39th message in the
- 0:11book of First Thessalonians. We have quite a few yet to go,
- 0:18and so we want you to be able to master and understand the book
- 0:22of First Thessalonians. It surely revolves around
- 0:26modeling the way. If you haven't been with us or
- 0:30you have forgotten, chapter 1 is all about the model church and
- 0:34what the model church truly looks like and acts like.
- 0:38That's in chapter 1. When you embark on chapter 2,
- 0:42you begin with the model leader in that church.
- 0:46And what does a model leader look like?
- 0:50How does a model leader impact the church?
- 0:53That was in verses 1 to 12 of chapter 2, and then we moved on
- 0:58to the model follower that's in verse 13 of chapter 2 to the end
- 1:04of that chapter. What does the model follower
- 1:07look like? You know as well as I do, you
- 1:09can't be an effective leader unless you're an effective
- 1:13follower. Great followers make great
- 1:16leaders. And So what does the model
- 1:19follower look like? That's at the end of Chapter 2.
- 1:23When you come to Chapter 3, you embark on what we called the
- 1:27model friend. What is a true friend, what they
- 1:32look like? That's what Chapter 3 is all
- 1:34about. And then you come to Chapter 4
- 1:37and Chapter 5. Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 is all
- 1:41about the model life. In order to be a model friend, a
- 1:46model follower, a a model leader, a model church, you must
- 1:53be the kind of person that models the life of Christ.
- 1:58And So what does the model life look like In all of chapter 4
- 2:03and chapter 5 deal with what the life of the believer actually
- 2:09lives out. And so you begin in chapter 4
- 2:12verse #1 with the model life being the life of abstinence.
- 2:17You abstain from sexual immorality.
- 2:20We spent several weeks there because the Lord wants us to be
- 2:24a pure model, a holy model. And that's where it all begins,
- 2:30right? You're instead of pardon to God
- 2:31for his purposes. And so he wants a holy church.
- 2:35And the holy church is filled with people who are committed to
- 2:38abstaining from sexual immorality and living a holy
- 2:43life. So the model life is 1 of
- 2:46abstinence. And then we moved on to verse #9
- 2:50of chapter 4. The model life is 1 of
- 2:52aspiration, that is to to love abundantly and to live
- 2:56appropriately. Then we moved on to verse #13 of
- 3:01chapter 4. And the model life was one of
- 3:03anticipation, 1 of anticipating the return of Christ for His
- 3:10church. And then you come to chapter 5.
- 3:16In chapter 5, you have the model life, which centers around the
- 3:20word alertness. The model life is awake,
- 3:26vigilant, alert, sober minded, clear thinking.
- 3:33That is the model life. And we've spent nine weeks on
- 3:39the 1st 3 verses of First Thessalonians, chapter 5.
- 3:46We will move on to verse #4 and following this morning.
- 3:51But Christ was concerned about this alertness among His people.
- 3:57In fact, He said in Mark's Gospel, the 13th chapter, these
- 4:01words in verse 33, take heed, keep on the alert, for you do
- 4:08not know when the appointed time will come.
- 4:11It's like a man away in a journey who, upon leaving his
- 4:14house and putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one
- 4:18his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay on the alert.
- 4:24Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know when the master
- 4:29of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight or
- 4:32when the rooster crows, or in the morning, in case he should
- 4:37come suddenly and find you asleep.
- 4:41But what I say to you, I say to all be on the alert.
- 4:50There's something about the model life that screams
- 4:53vigilance, awakeness, alertness, and therefore Paul addresses
- 5:03that in verses 1 to 12 of chapter 5.
- 5:10Peter was saying something similar when he said in first
- 5:14Peter chapter one verse #13 Therefore prepare your minds for
- 5:19action, Keep sober in spirit, be alert, be awake, be conscious,
- 5:29be vigilant, fix your hope completely on the grace to be
- 5:33brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
- 5:36Peter said the same thing in chapter 3 of the second Epistle
- 5:42of Peter. Peter says it this way, but the
- 5:46day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will
- 5:49pass away with a roar, and the elements will be destroyed with
- 5:52intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.
- 5:55Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort
- 5:59of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
- 6:02looking for and hastening or looking for with a vigilant
- 6:09spirit alert to the coming day of God?
- 6:16And so Peter jumps from the day of the Lord to the day of God,
- 6:20which is all very, very important, because we made it
- 6:22very clear to you that when you look at the return of Christ,
- 6:26you must see it from a broadview, a broad perspective.
- 6:31You must look at the return of Christ by looking at the day of
- 6:35Christ, the day of the Lord and the day of God.
- 6:40All three are unique and distinct.
- 6:44If you confuse them then you mess up your eschatology.
- 6:49So you must uniquely distinguish them one from the other.
- 6:56The Day of Christ is about the rapture of the Church and the
- 7:01reward of the Christian. That's First Thessalonians
- 7:034/13/18, living in anticipation of that.
- 7:07The day of the Lord when you come to 1st Thessalonians 5 is
- 7:11about the retribution of sinners and the redemption of Israel.
- 7:16And then when you come to the day of God, which is as Peter
- 7:20says at the end of his epistle, and Second Peter chapter 3, the
- 7:23day of eternity, the day of God and the day of eternity are one
- 7:26of the same. The day of God deals with the
- 7:28the righteous rule of the king for all eternity because man's
- 7:33day is over and now it's God's day.
- 7:36It's called the Day of God. So you must distinguish it in
- 7:40those three things to understand the broad scope of the return of
- 7:44the King. So as you go to 1st
- 7:48Thessalonians chapter 5, he says you need to be on the alerts
- 7:53because it models the kind of life that Christ wants you to
- 7:56have. And so we say that there are
- 7:58four unique aspects to that. In chapter 5, verses 1 to 11 #1
- 8:06you need to be reminded #2 need to be responsible #3 need to be
- 8:11refreshed, and #4 you need to be reliable.
- 8:16We've covered the first one. Being responsible.
- 8:19Being responsible to what? First of all, the times and
- 8:24seasons and epics #2 to be reminded of the term, the day of
- 8:30the Lord, what it means #3 be reminded of the thief that comes
- 8:35in the night #4 to be reminded of the terror that's going to
- 8:39come suddenly upon those and destroy them.
- 8:42And then #5 to remember the thrill of that.
- 8:45Because you, he says in verse #4 but you brethren, are not in
- 8:50that darkness. We spent nine weeks or excuse
- 8:54me, 8 weeks covering that aspect.
- 8:57In the first three weeks, if you weren't with us, you can go
- 8:59back. You can download it from, from
- 9:01our website. Listen to those sermons because
- 9:03it's very important to know this.
- 9:05Why is it important to know this?
- 9:07Because you remember Paul was in Thessalonica for three Sabbaths
- 9:10and maybe a little bit beyond that before he was chased out of
- 9:13Thessalonica. So it wasn't there long, but
- 9:17it's but but why he was there. A church was born and there were
- 9:23a few numbers of of believers and what he taught them
- 9:28primarily was about the second coming of the Messiah.
- 9:33That's what chapter 4 and chapter 5 deal with primarily.
- 9:36And that's why every chapter ends with something about the
- 9:39coming of the Christ. Why?
- 9:42Because all new believers must understand primarily the second
- 9:48coming of the Messiah. Outside of soteriology,
- 9:53eschatology is the greatest doctrine to be taught, learned
- 9:59and known. Because everything about today
- 10:03resides in the blessed hope of the coming, the Messiah.
- 10:08Every cure to your your mental issues focuses in on one thing,
- 10:16the blessed hope, the coming, the Messiah.
- 10:20Everything about your emotional issues is, is squelched when you
- 10:25understand the second coming, the Messiah.
- 10:28Everything about your relational issues is squelched when you
- 10:32understand the second coming, the Messiah.
- 10:35Every issue that you have in your physical life, in your
- 10:39mental life, in your emotional life, is all seen in proper
- 10:43perspective when you understand the return of the King.
- 10:48That's everything. It is our blessed hope, it's
- 10:52what we anticipate, it's what we are alert to as model citizens
- 10:56in God's Kingdom. And that's what keeps us going
- 10:59from day-to-day, knowing that Jesus is coming again.
- 11:05And so he says, be reminded, be reminded as to the times and
- 11:11epics, be reminded as to the day of the Lord.
- 11:13In fact, he says, I don't have much to say to you because I've
- 11:15already taught you this. Knowing that in those three
- 11:18weeks or three weeks plus that he was there, that he taught
- 11:22them about the second coming. He taught them about the day of
- 11:25the Lord. He taught them about the return
- 11:27of the King. So they would understand those
- 11:29aspects because it would take them through the tribulation and
- 11:33persecution that they would face.
- 11:34Read the epistles, read the apostle Paul.
- 11:37What was his hope amidst all his heart?
- 11:39I miss all of his pain. I miss his shipwrecks, his snake
- 11:43bites, his imprisonments. It was what the blessed hope of
- 11:47the coming of the Messiah, that is the answer to every one of
- 11:54your issues. That is the answer.
- 11:58Now, you might not believe that. You might not get that.
- 12:03I'm just telling you, the emphasis the Bible puts on it,
- 12:07it is so crucial and so clear and so important that you can't
- 12:12afford to neglect it. Why?
- 12:14It keeps you looking above and not below.
- 12:18It keeps you living in anticipation, and it keeps you
- 12:23always, always focused on the one thing that matters, Jesus
- 12:30Christ our Lord. And the reason we have the
- 12:33issues we do is because we're focused on who yourself.
- 12:38You're focused on me, my disappointments, my heartaches,
- 12:42my problems, my pains. And so we so we become so
- 12:46inwardly focused that we can't begin to even look up and see
- 12:52Jesus is coming again. Whether we like it or not, we
- 12:57are living the life of Ecclesiastes.
- 13:01We're living Solomon's life. We're living below the sun.
- 13:06We're not living beyond the sun. We're living below the sun.
- 13:10And Solomon's whole book of Ecclesiastes about what happens
- 13:14to you mentally and emotionally, physically and spiritually, when
- 13:19you live life below the sun. But when you live life beyond
- 13:24the sun, everything about Solomon's life was different.
- 13:28It was changed. That's where we need to be
- 13:32living our lives. So let's move on.
- 13:35And our outline to point #2 it's taking us 8 weeks to get here.
- 13:40It won't take us 8 weeks to finish, I promise.
- 13:44But we want to move on to the point #2 not only are you to be
- 13:47reminded of what it means to be alert, but you need to be
- 13:53responsible when it comes to being alert.
- 13:58And that responsibility falls into three key phrases. 1A
- 14:02witness, 2A watchman, and 3A warrior.
- 14:08Every person who is alert is a witness, a watchman, and a
- 14:13warrior. Look what it says.
- 14:16First Thessalonians 5 verse #4 But you, brethren, are not in
- 14:20darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief, for
- 14:25you are all sons of light and sons of day.
- 14:28We are not of the night, nor of darkness.
- 14:31So then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert,
- 14:36awake, and sober. For those who sleep do their
- 14:40sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.
- 14:43But since we are of the day, let us be sober.
- 14:46Wow, so important. What is he doing?
- 14:51He is telling them about the responsibility be a witness, a
- 14:56watchman and a warrior. He begins by telling them that
- 15:02they are a witness. He says you are children of the
- 15:06day. You are not children of the
- 15:09night. Children of the Night Live in
- 15:12darkness. Children of the day live in the
- 15:15light. Children of the night who live
- 15:18in darkness are drunk and sleep, but children of the day who live
- 15:29in the light are alert, awake and sober.
- 15:36So important. So he says, you, because you are
- 15:40sons of light and sons of the day.
- 15:43This is who you are. Live this way because the alert
- 15:47life lives responsibly because you're a witness.
- 15:54Turn back to me, if you would, to the first chapter of the book
- 15:57of Acts. Let me show you how Jesus said
- 16:00this Acts chapter one verse 6. So when they had come together,
- 16:07they were asking him saying Lord is that this time you are
- 16:10restoring the Kingdom to Israel. Why would they ask that
- 16:13question? Because he spent 40 days talking
- 16:15to them about things pertaining to the Kingdom.
- 16:18You read about that earlier in chapter 1.
- 16:20So by by nature they would ask, well, if you're talking to us
- 16:24about the Kingdom, when are you going to restore the Kingdom?
- 16:29Is now the time that you're going to do that?
- 16:31That would be the natural progression of thought.
- 16:37He said to them, verse 7, It's not for you to know the times or
- 16:41epics which the Father has fixed by His own authority.
- 16:46In other words, it's a fixed time.
- 16:48The Kingdom is a fixed time, and God by His own authority, God
- 16:52the Father by His own authority has determined that fixed time.
- 16:57Now listen to what He says next. He says, But you will receive
- 17:02power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be
- 17:07my witnesses. You shall be my witnesses.
- 17:15There's something about Christianity and the Spirit of
- 17:20God residing within you that makes you into something, that
- 17:26you become something that you were not before you were saved.
- 17:32Yes, you are a new creation, but you are now a witness.
- 17:37You really can't be a You can't go out witnessing unless you are
- 17:42a witness. You can't go out serving unless
- 17:46you are a servant. You can't go out and live
- 17:52Christ's life unless Christ lives in you.
- 17:58You see, to be is always more important than to do.
- 18:02We forget that we think doing is more important than being.
- 18:06No, no, being leads to doing. Who you are is the most
- 18:12important aspect of your life, and who you are is defined by
- 18:15the fact that you are a witness, you are a testimony, you are a
- 18:19living light to the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 18:23So he says, when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, listen, don't be
- 18:26concerned or consumed with revealing me or ruling an
- 18:32eternity as much as you should be concerned about revealing me
- 18:35to humanity. That's what Jesus is saying.
- 18:39Until I come reveal me to humanity, you are going to be my
- 18:44witnesses. So now Paul says in First
- 18:47Thessalonians chapter 5, you are not of the night, you are not of
- 18:52the darkness, you are of the light.
- 18:56Therefore shine bright as children of the light, because
- 19:03the people in darkness need to know the way.
- 19:06So when he speaks about darkness, he's speaking about
- 19:09mental darkness and moral darkness.
- 19:16He's speaking about those who are ignorant of the truth and
- 19:20those who are not just indifferent to the truth, but
- 19:23immoral to the truth. Those are the ones in darkness.
- 19:29Now to understand this, turn back with me if you would, to
- 19:31John's Gospel, the 1st chapter, John chapter 1, John chapter one
- 19:37verse #4 says in Him was life, and the life was the light of
- 19:41men. The light shines in the
- 19:44darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
- 19:50Christ is the light of life, but those in the darkness did not
- 19:56comprehend it. Go to chapter 3, verse #19 This
- 20:00is the judgment that light is coming to the world, and men
- 20:03love the darkness rather than light, for their deeds were
- 20:06evil. For everyone who does evil hates
- 20:10the light, and does not come to the light for fear that his
- 20:15deeds will be exposed. You ever wonder why the friend
- 20:19of yours, the family member of yours, the person you're sharing
- 20:23Christ with, does not embrace Christianity?
- 20:27It's because they love the darkness.
- 20:30They love their sin. They do not love the light and
- 20:35they love the sin so much is because they don't want to have
- 20:38their sin exposed to the light, so they don't come to the light.
- 20:47And then over in chapter chapter 8, he says these words I am the
- 20:54light of the world. Verse 12 He who follows me will
- 20:58not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.
- 21:06He who follows me will not be in the darkness, but will be in the
- 21:10light. This is how John says it over in
- 21:13first John. First John chapter 1 He says
- 21:18these words. Verse 5 This is the message we
- 21:20have heard from him and announced to you, that God is
- 21:23light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
- 21:28If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk
- 21:31in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
- 21:36But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we
- 21:41have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus
- 21:44his Son cleanses us from all sin.
- 21:48Look what it says over in first John chapter 2 verse #9 The one
- 21:54who says he is in the light and yet hates his brother is in the
- 21:59darkness. Until now.
- 22:02The one who loves his brother abides in the light and there is
- 22:06no cause for stumbling in him. But the one who hates his
- 22:11brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness and does
- 22:18not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded
- 22:24his eyes. So John makes it very clear.
- 22:28Paul makes it very clear that you are not children of
- 22:32darkness, but children of light, and you need to be responsible
- 22:39as a witness to shine forth that light.
- 22:45So important. As you recall, everything about
- 22:50the Old Testament pointed to the arrival of the Messiah, and the
- 22:55Messiah was described as a light.
- 22:57All you got to do is go back to the book of Isaiah, Isaiah
- 23:00Chapter 9, Isaiah chapter 4140240649, 60, chapter 60.
- 23:08It's all about this arrival of the light of the Messiah.
- 23:12Why? Because earlier on in the book
- 23:14of Numbers chapter 24 verse #17 it says that a star shall rise
- 23:19out of Jacob or a light shall shine out of Jacob with a
- 23:23scepter in his hands. And that that became the the key
- 23:27verse to describe the arrival of the Messiah as as a light.
- 23:33Malachi would say that when the sun SUN of Righteousness
- 23:37appears, then you will receive the healing that you need
- 23:42spiritually to live appropriately.
- 23:46It was all about the coming light.
- 23:50So in Luke's Gospel, in the 2nd chapter of of Luke's Gospel,
- 23:58Simeon says this when he holds the Christ child in his hands.
- 24:02For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have
- 24:05prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light of revelation
- 24:11to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel.
- 24:17Earlier Zechariah the priest, the father of John the Baptist,
- 24:22said in verse 78 of chapter 1 of Luke, because of the tender
- 24:27mercy of God, with which the sunrise from on high will visit
- 24:32us. He quotes from the book of
- 24:34Isaiah then and says to shine upon those who sit in darkness
- 24:39and the shadow of death to guide our feet into the way of peace.
- 24:47Peter called the Messiah the day star in the Book of Revelation
- 24:51chapter 2 and chapter 22 he is called the bright morning star.
- 24:58So everything was about light and the brightness of the
- 25:01Messiah that that's why it talks about in Psalm.
- 25:05I think it's Psalm 50 or or Psalm 51.
- 25:07My memory is not clear on that just yet.
- 25:09But it's all about Zion. And the meaning of Zion means
- 25:13sunny that that that the Lord will shine forth from Zion.
- 25:20Why? Because that's where the glory
- 25:22of the Lord dwells. That's what the Prince of God
- 25:24is. And so Zion is equated, which is
- 25:28Jerusalem, which is Mount Zion, which is Mount Moriah is a
- 25:32testimony to the shining 4th of the Messiah.
- 25:36And so when when the Messiah came, the glory of the Lord
- 25:38would shine all around, which is the the Prince of God manifested
- 25:42in brilliant light. Everything is about light,
- 25:44everything is about brightness, everything is about the shining
- 25:474th of the Messiah. And so now because we are
- 25:51Christians, we are children of the light, we are sons of the
- 25:56day. We are sons of the light.
- 25:59We're not sons of the night, we're sons of the day.
- 26:03So he says, listen, you need to be responsible in your witness
- 26:08to shine forth the light of the glorious gospel of Christ,
- 26:13because Christ reigns within you.
- 26:17Remember over in Ephesians chapter 4, Ephesians chapter 4,
- 26:23Paul says this in verse #17 So this I say and affirm together
- 26:27with the Lord that you walk no longer.
- 26:29Just as the Gentiles also walk in the futility of their mind
- 26:34being darkened, in their understanding excluded from the
- 26:38life of God because of the ignorance that is in them,
- 26:41because of the hardness of their heart.
- 26:44And they having become callous, have given themselves over to
- 26:48sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with
- 26:54greediness. But he says you did not learn
- 26:58Christ in this manner. And then over in chapter 5 verse
- 27:04#8 Paul says these words for you were formerly darkness, but now
- 27:14you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, walk
- 27:25as children of light. Remember what Jesus said in in
- 27:29in John chapter 12 when he gave this invitation, John's Gospel,
- 27:36the 12th chapter, the 46th verse.
- 27:39I have come as light into the world so that everyone who
- 27:43believes in me will not remain in darkness.
- 27:50So listen, everybody in the world falls into two categories.
- 27:55One of the other light or darkness, night or day, drunk or
- 28:05sober, alert unto Christ or sleep from Christ.
- 28:14But everybody falls into one or two categories.
- 28:17Either a children, a child of the darkness, or you're a child
- 28:21of the light. And those who come to the light
- 28:26don't walk in darkness anymore because they follow the light of
- 28:31life. That, that, that is just so
- 28:33important to understand this, that that's why the Bible says
- 28:36in Matthew chapter 5, you are the salt of the earth.
- 28:39You are the light of the world. It's part of your identity.
- 28:44Why as salt of the earth do you retard corruption?
- 28:49Because you are the light to the world.
- 28:52Therefore you retard corruption by revealing Christ.
- 28:58That's how it happens. And so therefore Christ says you
- 29:02are the light of the world, so important and those he says, he
- 29:08says you are the sons of light. You are the sons of day.
- 29:14You need to understand that term because it's a Hebrew idiom and
- 29:19it begins to to help you understand what it means to be a
- 29:23a son of the day or a son of the night.
- 29:27Because to say something or someone was the son of something
- 29:31would say that you are equal in nature to that aspect.
- 29:36It is the dominant influence of your life.
- 29:40So in Judges chapter, Judges chapter 19, it says that the
- 29:46wicked people were the sons of the devil or the sons of Belial.
- 29:52That means that their nature was equal and equivalent to that of
- 29:58the devil. All their wickedness
- 30:00characterized their lives. That's why the Bible says in
- 30:04Mark's Gospel, the 3rd chapter that James and John were called
- 30:07the sons of Thunder. It doesn't mean that James and
- 30:12John had a mother and father name Mr. and Misses Thunder and
- 30:16that they were the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Thunder.
- 30:18No, they they were equal in nature to equivalent to a
- 30:23thunderous, violent, aggressive act.
- 30:26And all you got to do is read the book of or the Gospels and
- 30:28realize that they were a thundering crew.
- 30:33In chapter 4 of the book of Acts, Barnabas was called the
- 30:36son of encouragement. It doesn't mean his father and
- 30:39mother or Mr. and Mrs. Encouragement.
- 30:41It means that he is a son characterized by encouragement.
- 30:44That's his life. His life was characterized by
- 30:47being and encouraging individual.
- 30:50The Bible says in John 17 that Judas was the son of perdition.
- 30:58But what does that mean? That means that his nature was
- 31:01one of destruction. His nature was one of perdition.
- 31:04His nature was one of damnation. That was His nature, and He
- 31:09acted in accordance with that. Ephesians 2 verse 2 says that
- 31:15before we were saved, we were the sons of disobedience.
- 31:21That is, our lives were by nature disobedient to the things
- 31:27of God. Over in Matthew chapter 15, or
- 31:30excuse me, 13 verse #38 the tares, the unbelievers are
- 31:35called the sons of the wicked one.
- 31:39That is, they have a nature that's equivalent in kind to the
- 31:43DNA of Satan himself. So here Paul comes along and
- 31:51says, the reason you're going to escape the day of the Lord, the
- 31:56reason why that destruction is not going to come up on you is
- 31:58because you're not in darkness. You're in daylight because
- 32:05you're sons of the light. You're not sons of darkness, you
- 32:11are sons of the day. In other words, your nature is
- 32:14equivalent and like that of our Lord who is light, it's speaking
- 32:21to the nature of the Christian You are sons of light.
- 32:25You are sons of day. Therefore, be responsible as a
- 32:29witness to live out the nature of your calling, simply because
- 32:33this is where Christ has placed you as a citizen in His Kingdom.
- 32:39Be responsible to live as a child of the light, child of the
- 32:46day, so incredibly important. In verse 6 He says so then let
- 32:56us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert, awake,
- 33:01vigilant, sober minded. Let us not sleep.
- 33:09In other words, let's not be insensitive or in a coma,
- 33:12spiritually speaking. Let's not be insensible nor let
- 33:17us be drunk. You ever seen a drunk person?
- 33:21They, they, they, they wander aimlessly around because they
- 33:23have no direction. That's the unbeliever.
- 33:27But the believer is sober minded.
- 33:29He's in his right mind, he is alert, he is awake.
- 33:32He is vigilant because he's not drunk.
- 33:36But the unbeliever is described in a drunken stupor.
- 33:40So Paul is just basically saying this, listen, be, be responsible
- 33:47as a as a witness, because that's who you are.
- 33:52You're sons of light, you're sons of the day.
- 33:55That's why you escape the coming wrath of God, the day of the
- 33:57Lord. That's why you have to worry
- 33:59about those things that that's set aside for the children of
- 34:02the darkness. That's set aside for the for the
- 34:04unbelieving person. It's not set aside for the
- 34:07believing person. Oh no, only for the unbeliever.
- 34:16And over in the book of Romans, Paul says something very
- 34:21similar. Romans chapter 13 he says verse
- 34:2911 do this, do this knowing the time that is already the hour
- 34:35for for you to awaken from sleep.
- 34:39For now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.
- 34:44So the same thing be alert, be a vigilant, don't be asleep, be on
- 34:53the watch. You're a watchman.
- 34:55You're awake, you're alert. Why?
- 35:00Because your salvation is nearer than it's ever been before.
- 35:03What does that mean? I'm already saved.
- 35:05It means that yes, you are saved And, and, and judicially,
- 35:09you're, you're born again. You're justified before Christ.
- 35:11You're sanctified in Christ, but you're yet to be glorified.
- 35:16That's going to happen when you see him face to face, you'll
- 35:21have this glorified body. You'll have this perfect body.
- 35:24So your salvation, the completion of your salvation is
- 35:27yet future. It will one day happen.
- 35:29And when it does remember this, it's soon going to happen
- 35:32because it's closer than it's ever been before.
- 35:35It's soon coming, Paul says, and he says just 2000 years ago.
- 35:40So if it was close 2000 years ago, how close must it be today?
- 35:46And so he says, awake from your sleep because your salvation is
- 35:50nearer than it's ever been before.
- 35:52The night is almost gone, verse 12 and the day is near.
- 35:56Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the
- 36:01armor of light. Paul knows that we have this
- 36:07tendency to slip back into the night.
- 36:12We have this tendency to to slip back into, into the darkness.
- 36:18We had this tendency to, to not live as a witness to the light
- 36:26as we should. That will always be a struggle
- 36:30until we receive our glorified body.
- 36:34That's why we sin and that's why we confess our sins, right?
- 36:39So Paul knows this. So Paul is just reminding those
- 36:44in Rome about what it is that should be happening in their
- 36:47lives. Awake from your sleep, awake
- 36:52from the stupor you are in. Be vigilant, be on your guard,
- 36:57be a witness. Put on the armor of light.
- 37:00What's the, what's the armor of light?
- 37:02Christ is light. Christ is your armor.
- 37:06Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. That's what he's saying.
- 37:09In fact, he says it later. He says this, he says verse 13.
- 37:13Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and
- 37:16drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not
- 37:19in strife and jealousy, but put on the Lord Jesus Christ and
- 37:24make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
- 37:30See put it on the armor. Light is put in the Lord Jesus
- 37:33Christ. It's walking in obedience to to
- 37:36the light of the world because that's who we are.
- 37:40See, we can do that because that's in our spiritual DNA.
- 37:45We are children of the light, not children of the night,
- 37:49children of the day, not children of darkness.
- 37:52And so we can put those things on.
- 37:54We can, we can live that way simply because of what God
- 37:57himself has done in our lives. Your conduct, your conduct must
- 38:06demonstrate of the condition of your character.
- 38:13And that's Paul's exhortation to be responsible because the day
- 38:19of the Lord's not going to come upon you.
- 38:20You're going to escape that. You're going to escape that
- 38:23time. You're going to escape that
- 38:25terror, you're going to escape that thief, you're going to
- 38:28escape all of that. So therefore, act responsibly,
- 38:34act responsibly, be alert, be awake, be vigilant, be the
- 38:40witness you were called to be, be the watchman you need to be,
- 38:47and make sure you're the warrior you should be.
- 38:52And he goes on and says these words in First Thessalonians
- 38:55chapter 5. He says, But since we are of the
- 39:00day, let us be sober or alert or vigilant, having put on the
- 39:07breastplate of faith and love as a helmet, the hope of salvation
- 39:14for God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining
- 39:19salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 39:24He says you're a warrior, you're a warrior in God's army and you
- 39:30need the helmet of hope, which is your salvation.
- 39:37You need the breastplate of faith and and love because
- 39:43you're in a battle and you war every single day and you must be
- 39:49responsible as a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 39:54So Paul's call is this, the day of the Lord is coming.
- 40:00And I told you about this, but the thrill of this is that
- 40:04you'll escape that. You're going to miss it because
- 40:09who you are by nature, child of the day, the child of the light.
- 40:17And, and my, my plea to you today is, do you know that
- 40:22you're a child of the light that you walk in the light as he is
- 40:28in the light that, that, that your nature demonstrates the
- 40:35Christ that you are. You are the brightest light in
- 40:40your workplace because light exposes sin, does it not?
- 40:46The brighter you shine, the more sin you'll expose.
- 40:51You know that, right? Just try looking in the corners
- 40:55of your house and shining light underneath the furniture.
- 40:58You'll expose all the dirt that's there.
- 41:01Turn the light off. It's like it doesn't exist.
- 41:03Oh, but it's there. Turn the light on.
- 41:05Oh wow, look how dirty it is there.
- 41:08And the brighter you shine for Christ, the more sin is exposed
- 41:13all around you. And people don't like that.
- 41:18That's why they hate Christ. Can you imagine Christ walking
- 41:22into your church, Christ walking into your house, and he's the
- 41:27light of the world. He'll expose everything that's
- 41:29evil in there just by simply His presence, because He dwells in
- 41:36unapproachable light. And He is.
- 41:40In him is no darkness at all. And so whenever he walked into
- 41:44the temple, whenever he walked with his men, wherever he walked
- 41:47into a room, the light would shine bright because He is the
- 41:53light of the world. How about you?
- 41:58Have you embraced the light? Have you come to the saving
- 42:02grace of the light? Are you still wandering around
- 42:08in darkness, groping around in the night, trying to find your
- 42:12way through life, trying to find your way to heaven, trying to
- 42:16find your way out of the muck in the mire you find yourself in?
- 42:21Or if you embrace the light of the world, Jesus Christ Himself,
- 42:26and giving your life to Him that He might guide, direct and lead
- 42:31you from this day forward. I would trust that that's the
- 42:35case. Let's pray together.
- 42:37Father, we thank you for today. It is a great day.
- 42:43It's a great day, Lord, because you gave it to us.
- 42:45That's number one. You gave us this day and we are
- 42:50grateful. And not only did you give us
- 42:54this day, you give it gave us this day for a purpose.
- 42:58And today's purpose was was to worship, worship the King of
- 43:02kings and Lord of Lords. And in our worship, understand
- 43:07what your word says to each and every one of us.
- 43:11That meant we might respond in a way that brings glory to you and
- 43:13your Kingdom. We want to do that, Lord.
- 43:19What a great day. What a great day to walk as
- 43:22children of the light. Children of the day to be alert,
- 43:29sober minded, awake, vigilant. This is the coming day of the
- 43:36Lord. We thank you Father, that you've
- 43:39saved us. If there be one among us that
- 43:42has never embraced the light, may today be that day.
- 43:48May you go before us, Lord, in a great and mighty way for the
- 43:52glory of your Kingdom. And may this week be one that
- 43:56Lord, we are able to shine brighter and brighter until the
- 44:01coming day You take us home to be with you.
- 44:04Then at home with our family, the light shines bright.
- 44:10That at a workplace or vacation or school, the light just shines
- 44:18brighter and brighter. And that, Lord, you use us as a
- 44:22witness for the glory of Your great Kingdom.
- 44:25To you come again, as you most surely will, in Jesus name,
- 44:32Amen.
