Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Peace out. Let's get the latest on the Utah Jazz
- 0:09Speaker 1: with former Jazz assistant coach Gordy Chiesa. He's forgotten more
- 0:13Speaker 1: about the NBA than any of us will ever know.
- 0:16Speaker 1: It's like they're crazy. Come for the Hoops Talk. Stay
- 0:18Speaker 1: for his list of the day.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Our list today.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Here's OC with basketball savant Gordy Chiesa on the Sean
- 0:25Speaker 1: O'Connell Show.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. We talk a
- 0:34Speaker 3: little basketball with Gordy Chiesa. Brought to you by our
- 0:38Speaker 3: friends at Aladdin Industries, your Utah VLUX dealer. If you're
- 0:41Speaker 3: looking for a skylight, they're the ones to call. Gordy,
- 0:44Speaker 3: welcome back to the show. How are you, sir?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Well, thank you.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Gordy, we were just talking about the.
- 0:51Speaker 3: The way that this whole Pat McAfee Utah situation got
- 0:54Speaker 3: blown out of proportion and the university decides to issue
- 0:56Speaker 3: an apology and they've decided that instead of being right,
- 1:01Speaker 3: they're going to be happy. We've all done this in
- 1:03Speaker 3: a relationship at work potentially where you say, you know what?
- 1:07Speaker 3: Even if I want to die on this hill, I
- 1:10Speaker 3: recognize that I'm not going to. It's not going to
- 1:12Speaker 3: be a good outcome for me. So I'm just going
- 1:13Speaker 3: to apologize so we can move on. I imagine you
- 1:17Speaker 3: had a situation like this or two with players, coaches
- 1:20Speaker 3: in the NBA. Can you give me an example of
- 1:22Speaker 3: one maybe?
- 1:24Speaker 2: As a coach, you pick your battles to fight with
- 1:27Speaker 2: individual players, especially the star players. Because in the NBA,
- 1:30Speaker 2: the star players, you need them to perform in the
- 1:33Speaker 2: fourth quarter. So just generally speaking, Sean, every coach goes
- 1:38Speaker 2: through it, or management or organization. And so a good
- 1:42Speaker 2: question is, you have to make a decision. Is it
- 1:46Speaker 2: worth going all out against some sort of questionable situation,
- 1:52Speaker 2: or do you take a step back to go 10 forward?
- 1:54Speaker 2: And that's absolutely everybody does it in professional sports. And also, Sean,
- 1:59Speaker 2: in most businesses, that's successful.
- 2:02Speaker 3: All right, now let's get to this Utah Jazz team.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Off to a slow start so far this season. And,
- 2:07Speaker 3: you know, it started with some rebounding issues and there's
- 2:10Speaker 3: some turnover issues. And I'm not sure how you fix
- 2:15Speaker 3: these issues, but that's why we have you.
- 2:17Speaker 1: You're the expert.
- 2:18Speaker 3: What's going on with this Utah Jazz team? One and
- 2:20Speaker 3: four so far. One and three so far, excuse me.
- 2:23Speaker 2: One and three so far. And, well, the biggest thing
- 2:26Speaker 2: right now is their defense is still– Absolutely, they have
- 2:31Speaker 2: to be better. They're allowing 121 points per game. It
- 2:35Speaker 2: puts them at 22nd in the NBA. So they've got
- 2:37Speaker 2: to improve that. The Jazz three-point shooting defense, they're allowing 27.
- 2:41Speaker 2: They're allowing 39.6% from three-point shooting versus their defense, which
- 2:49Speaker 2: makes them at 27. And ironically, Sean, tomorrow night's game
- 2:53Speaker 2: when the Jazz play the Spurs, the Spurs are the
- 2:55Speaker 2: worst team in the NBA guarding the three-point line. So
- 3:00Speaker 2: both teams are struggling to guard the three. And the
- 3:03Speaker 2: reason why, just simply speaking, is that you're getting beat
- 3:07Speaker 2: at the point of attack on ball as far as penetration.
- 3:11Speaker 2: and just generally speaking, that you're closing out to the
- 3:14Speaker 2: corner three or the arc three way too late. And
- 3:18Speaker 2: so there's lateness, and there's also what? Lack of ball containment,
- 3:22Speaker 2: as always. That is the absolute root of what's going
- 3:26Speaker 2: on right now as far as the Jazz thought of
- 3:29Speaker 2: being a one and two. Now, add to this. Last
- 3:32Speaker 2: night's game, Sean, Jazz competed hard. Yes, they did. However,
- 3:37Speaker 2: is that... During the game, the evolution during the game
- 3:40Speaker 2: was that the Grizzlies bench, they really outplayed the Jazz
- 3:44Speaker 2: bench dramatically. So everybody in the Grizzlies basketball off the
- 3:49Speaker 2: bench scored four points or more. And the Jazz flip
- 3:53Speaker 2: side of that is that Kyle Filipowski, Steve Mihailuk, and
- 3:56Speaker 2: Joshua Koji, all those guys, they went 0 for 11 shooting.
- 4:01Speaker 2: And so the Jazz have no chance of winning if
- 4:03Speaker 2: those guys can't make a basket. And that was the
- 4:06Speaker 2: margin of difference right now. Even though, again, the question,
- 4:10Speaker 2: as always, for Jazz fans, there's no more moral victories.
- 4:14Speaker 2: You did play hard, and that's commendable. But it's a
- 4:16Speaker 2: home game. You're playing against the Grizzlies, who I know
- 4:20Speaker 2: that beat the Jazz– of six days earlier. But these
- 4:24Speaker 2: are games you have to win. Both teams are playing
- 4:26Speaker 2: a back-to-back. Jazz played on Sunday. The Grizzlies played on
- 4:29Speaker 2: Sunday versus at Sacramento. So it's a winnable game and
- 4:34Speaker 2: a fortunate Jazz lost.
- 4:36Speaker 3: One of the questions I had when the season started
- 4:39Speaker 3: is now that the appropriate measure is to move forward
- 4:42Speaker 3: with a full-strength team, not to over-inflate injuries, not to
- 4:47Speaker 3: give people extra time off. to, you know, help with
- 4:50Speaker 3: the tanking effort. You got to get guys on the
- 4:52Speaker 3: floor as often as you can. You got to get
- 4:54Speaker 3: guys on the floor for as long as you can.
- 4:56Speaker 3: You got to get the most out of Lowry marketing
- 4:59Speaker 3: and trade Jay and everyone else that you can. And
- 5:02Speaker 3: we're four games in Gordy and Lowry marketing exited in
- 5:05Speaker 3: the first quarter, Jaron Jackson, Jr. Exited in the second quarter.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I don't know the severity of those injuries. I think
- 5:11Speaker 3: we're still waiting more on details, but can this Utah
- 5:13Speaker 3: jazz team stay healthy now that they want to stay healthy?
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yes, they can. Now, with that said, though, is that
- 5:21Speaker 2: with Larry Marketing, it was a right wrist injury. So
- 5:24Speaker 2: it's absolutely important because that's a shooting wrist. And with
- 5:28Speaker 2: Jaron Jackson, it was a right knee injury. And so
- 5:31Speaker 2: we'll see what the MRI says today. The Jets will
- 5:34Speaker 2: know more of what's going on. All right, so now
- 5:37Speaker 2: the question is always this, Sean. Just like in the NFL, attrition.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Who's going to step into those roles and play well?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Last night was Mo Bamba. Mo Bamba, that guy came
- 5:46Speaker 2: in the game. And the energy on the boards and
- 5:49Speaker 2: the lane, he created so much havoc. And he scored
- 5:53Speaker 2: 14 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks. And that was good.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Josh Green hounded and pounded Ty Jerome, who scored 45
- 6:01Speaker 2: points against the Jazz six days ago. Now, last night,
- 6:04Speaker 2: Jerome goes 4 for 15 because of menace on defense
- 6:08Speaker 2: of Josh Green. So the question, as always, is who's
- 6:12Speaker 2: going to step in those games and play? I think
- 6:15Speaker 2: Ace Bailey is playing well. For a guy that's 20
- 6:19Speaker 2: years old, Ace Bailey last night had some good moments.
- 6:22Speaker 2: He had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. And
- 6:27Speaker 2: they're playing almost, Sean, as like a stretch, almost like
- 6:32Speaker 2: a stretch three, a stretch four. And it's been commendable
- 6:36Speaker 2: with him what he's done. Darren Peterson. I'm asking this question, Sean,
- 6:40Speaker 2: every minute of the day when I'm on the street
- 6:42Speaker 2: is that people are asking me about Darren Peterson. Let's
- 6:44Speaker 2: not forget, he's only 19 years old. He's struggling right
- 6:48Speaker 2: now shooting only 36% from the field and 33% from three.
- 6:54Speaker 2: But you get the feeling what? They're all makeable shots,
- 6:56Speaker 2: so he will be fine. As always, in the NBA,
- 7:00Speaker 2: just like in the NFL, you've got to be able
- 7:03Speaker 2: to score points. In the NBA, you also have to
- 7:07Speaker 2: be able to what? Defend. And it all starts on
- 7:10Speaker 2: the rim and also the three-point line. And that's when
- 7:13Speaker 2: the Jets right now are struggling.
- 7:17Speaker 3: We're still very, very early. Who else is catching your
- 7:20Speaker 3: attention around the association, Gordy?
- 7:23Speaker 2: The Rockets, Sean. The Rockets, they got Freddie Van Fleet back.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And so he's having seven assists a game, and he
- 7:32Speaker 2: gives them this steady influence. The Rockets, again, they are
- 7:36Speaker 2: a good team. They got knocked out in the playoffs
- 7:39Speaker 2: by the Lakers, and it set them back on their heels.
- 7:42Speaker 2: But they have a good talent level. Obviously, we have
- 7:45Speaker 2: Kevin Durant, and you have Amon Thompson, one of the
- 7:48Speaker 2: best two-way players in the NBA. And Alperon Chagoon. And
- 7:52Speaker 2: what makes the Rockets so interesting to me is that
- 7:55Speaker 2: they're second in the NBA as far as shooting overall. Again,
- 7:59Speaker 2: you get a point guard that's pass happy, that's steady.
- 8:03Speaker 2: So the Rockets right now are second in the NBA shooting, 50.9
- 8:06Speaker 2: from the field. Ironically, the Lakers are number one. And
- 8:10Speaker 2: we saw the Lakers here on Sunday, what the Lakers
- 8:12Speaker 2: do when they move that ball. So that is really
- 8:15Speaker 2: good for the NBA. So now the Thunder, with some
- 8:19Speaker 2: of their main guys being injured, the Thunder are still 4-0.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I find this fascinating. So the Rockets, Thunder, and the Grizzlies,
- 8:27Speaker 2: so the Grizzlies, the upcoming team, the Thunder are an
- 8:31Speaker 2: elite team. The Rockets want to be an elite team.
- 8:34Speaker 2: They're 4-0. So I find that very interesting. at the
- 8:38Speaker 2: Eastern Conference right now, Nick Abakis. Who would have thought
- 8:41Speaker 2: that the Knicks and the Nets have the same record 0-3?
- 8:46Speaker 2: And so with the Knicks right now, Jalen Brunson has
- 8:49Speaker 2: said himself he's blaming the Jazz, excuse me, the Nick
- 8:55Speaker 2: Abakis slow start at 0-3 on him. Jalen Brunson, who
- 9:00Speaker 2: we all like and enjoy watching him play, he's only
- 9:02Speaker 2: shooting from the field 39.1 and 26.7 from threes. So
- 9:08Speaker 2: that's what I've been watching right now. So the Spurs
- 9:11Speaker 2: are somewhat struggling and the Knicks are struggling. And by
- 9:15Speaker 2: the way, it seems to me, we all remember that
- 9:18Speaker 2: was the NBA finals last year. So there's some sort
- 9:22Speaker 2: of really mental fatigue, even though you say it's not.
- 9:26Speaker 2: It is when there's two teams come out of right
- 9:29Speaker 2: now with a slow start.
- 9:32Speaker 3: You make a great point. Gordy, the nuggets have one win.
- 9:35Speaker 3: The warriors have one win. The Spurs have one win.
- 9:39Speaker 3: So it's not time to panic about the fact that
- 9:41Speaker 3: the Utah jazz only have one win, but when do
- 9:44Speaker 3: teams really start to pay attention as you're getting a
- 9:47Speaker 3: season rolling and you know, you're trying to make sure
- 9:50Speaker 3: that you're off to the right start and that you're
- 9:53Speaker 3: not digging a hole for yourself. How many games into
- 9:56Speaker 3: a season, if things aren't going well, do you have
- 9:59Speaker 3: to start raising an eyebrow internally?
- 10:02Speaker 2: 20 games. That's the benchmark, 20 games. So sometime in
- 10:08Speaker 2: December or so. So that's when you really see your
- 10:13Speaker 2: team as far as how you are. And that's when
- 10:17Speaker 2: you have to reassess really internally without any emotion about, Hey,
- 10:22Speaker 2: we thought that so-and-so was going to play better and
- 10:26Speaker 2: he is not, or, Hey, it's really surprising that our
- 10:30Speaker 2: concern was that we say a three point shooting and
- 10:32Speaker 2: our team is shooting for the blanks and, or rebounding.
- 10:35Speaker 2: And that's the, that's what you have to do. You
- 10:37Speaker 2: have to internally analyze your team to make adjustments and get, and, uh,
- 10:43Speaker 2: and get ready to possibly make an early trade or
- 10:47Speaker 2: the trading deadline in February, what are you going to do?
- 10:50Speaker 2: So you want to be totally honest. You don't want
- 10:53Speaker 2: to overreact or underreact, but you want to see what
- 10:57Speaker 2: your record is because, again, as always, your record is
- 11:01Speaker 2: who you are at that moment.
- 11:05Speaker 3: What's the list today, Gordy?
- 11:06Speaker 2: All right, Sean, this past Sunday– Luka Doncic, they call
- 11:13Speaker 2: him Luka Magic. He had the 52-point performance against the Jazz.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And he was absolutely spectacular. Him and his sidekick, Austin Reeves.
- 11:22Speaker 2: And when I was watching him play during that game,
- 11:25Speaker 2: he really had it rolling. So my list today is
- 11:27Speaker 2: the NBA career leaders in the most 50-point games or
- 11:31Speaker 2: more career-wise. So Luka did it. He's the first one
- 11:35Speaker 2: this year of getting 50 points in the NBA game.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Here's some of the attributes of a dominant point producer. One,
- 11:42Speaker 2: you need more skills. Two, range shooting touch. Three, interior presence,
- 11:48Speaker 2: either driving or posting. Four, being a foul generator. Three,
- 11:53Speaker 2: throw line resonant. Five. Passing and screening teammates as far
- 11:59Speaker 2: as on the floor. So you get 50 points in
- 12:02Speaker 2: a game. Your passing and screening teammates have helped you.
- 12:06Speaker 2: And the last point about this, the sixth thing you
- 12:08Speaker 2: need is what? You have to have an alpha dog personality,
- 12:11Speaker 2: supreme confidence as a baller. So just think about what
- 12:15Speaker 2: Luka did on Sunday and just the list right now.
- 12:18Speaker 2: It'd be a quick list as far as these people
- 12:21Speaker 2: have that personality. All right, third question. There's a 13th
- 12:26Speaker 2: of all time with nine games of 50 points or
- 12:30Speaker 2: more are Kevin Durant and Giannis. Tied for 11th all
- 12:34Speaker 2: time is Luka Doncic with 10 and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. 10th
- 12:41Speaker 2: all time at most 50-point games career-wise, Allen Iverson at 11.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Tied for 8th all time. LeBron James and Rick Barry
- 12:51Speaker 2: with 14 50, 14 50 point masterpiece. Tied for sixth
- 12:58Speaker 2: all time. Steph Curry and Dame Lillard, two knockdown shooters.
- 13:03Speaker 2: They did it 15 times. Tied for fifth all time
- 13:06Speaker 2: of the most ever 50 point career games. Elgin Baylor
- 13:10Speaker 2: with 17. Tied number three all time. Kobe Bryant and
- 13:15Speaker 2: James Harden, They did it 25 times. The second most
- 13:19Speaker 2: ever 50-point game performances is Michael Jordan with 31. And
- 13:24Speaker 2: the number one player of all time, the most ever
- 13:28Speaker 2: 50-point games, Sean, it probably will never be broken. is
- 13:32Speaker 2: Will Chamberlain. He did it 118 times of 50 points
- 13:37Speaker 2: or more games. Jazz basketball, the leader is Adrian Dantley.
- 13:41Speaker 2: He did it six times. Karl Malone and Pete Maveridge
- 13:44Speaker 2: did it four times. So, Sean, Will Chamberlain scored 50
- 13:47Speaker 2: points or more in an NBA game 118 times.
- 13:51Speaker 3: It's an insane, insane number.
- 13:54Speaker 2: So, Luka's got 10, and it's commendable. Will's got 118. Wow.
- 14:03Speaker 3: I wish we could have seen him.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Oh, I saw him, and he did it with step-back jumpers,
- 14:10Speaker 2: unbelievable dunks, running the floor, and also he had this
- 14:15Speaker 2: finger roll where he looked to the baseline, come back
- 14:18Speaker 2: middle with the ball, and finger roll to the basket
- 14:21Speaker 2: against all these shot blockers. Remember, he jumped so high
- 14:24Speaker 2: on that finger roll, it's hard to block his shot.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Gordy, you're the man.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Appreciate your time.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Thanks, Sean. Peace out. Stay well.
