- 1:11Speaker 1: I had a great time getting to know him. He's
- 1:13Speaker 1: an enthralling dang human. Today's guest is Timothee Chalamet.
- 1:20Speaker 2: And I will not We were just in Nashville. Let's
- 1:34Speaker 2: start there. Are we good, Zach? Yeah. Cool beans. Yeah, yeah. Yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 2: I saw you were just in Nashville.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Had you been there before? Yeah, once, kind of exploring.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I was doing a movie called Bones and All. I
- 1:44Speaker 2: was trying to do research. Oh, yeah. It's my producer's favorite.
- 1:47Speaker 2: No way. Yeah, I haven't seen it yet. Have we
- 1:48Speaker 2: just met?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yep, that guy, Zach, is his name. No way.
- 1:50Speaker 2: And he loves it. Yeah, he really loves it. No way.
- 1:52Speaker 2: So I had wandered there, and this time got a
- 1:56Speaker 2: better sense of it. But it's a great city, huh?
- 1:58Speaker 1: It's a good place. It's like a little city. It's
- 2:01Speaker 1: like a little city, kind of like a fancy little city.
- 2:05Speaker 1: It's almost like the JonBenet of cities.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Of cities.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Kind of like, you know, look at this outfit, kind of,
- 2:11Speaker 1: you know, but dangerous at the same time. But it
- 2:13Speaker 1: has kind of like an element of like mystery kind of.
- 2:15Speaker 1: That's kind of a weird example.
- 2:17Speaker 2: No, but you're not, are you from there? No, I'm
- 2:19Speaker 2: from Louisiana. Okay. But Nashville, here's what it is. It's safe.
- 2:22Speaker 1: It's nice. People are friendly. You can't cheat on your
- 2:26Speaker 1: wife there.
- 2:26Speaker 2: So it's not, Because the city's too small. Too small. Okay.
- 2:29Speaker 1: You couldn't take your wife or spouse or significant other.
- 2:34Speaker 1: You couldn't even, yeah, like, and you couldn't take them
- 2:36Speaker 1: to dinner or something and not see somebody that would
- 2:38Speaker 1: know one of you or them.
- 2:40Speaker 2: There's like 14 people? Yeah.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Well, there's just, there's enough people, but there's a, it's a,
- 2:44Speaker 1: the South's a little gossipy.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Uh-huh. Okay.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So there's a lot of like, it's not a really
- 2:48Speaker 1: an adultery city. It's not a city that's, adultery is
- 2:51Speaker 1: not like a trademark of the city probably.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Is it? How is it different from New Orleans? New Orleans?
- 2:55Speaker 1: New Orleans is a little bit more dangerous, I think,
- 2:58Speaker 1: you know? And probably better food, to be honest.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I think you have to have crime to have good food.
- 3:04Speaker 1: That's kind of how I feel.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I've never heard the MO. Really? Yeah. That's interesting. You
- 3:09Speaker 2: ever had that Yakum in New Orleans? That Yakum? It's
- 3:14Speaker 2: not a drug, is it? No, no, no. Okay. Because
- 3:17Speaker 2: I've had that.
- 3:17Speaker 1: You've never had Yakum? I haven't had the edible version, no.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Oh, this thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Exactly. Exactly.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Oh, there's Vietnamese food.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I don't think so. I was watching top five, um,
- 3:28Speaker 2: like top five New Orleans street foods. Hey, y'all come homey.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Wow. That's a deep cut right there.
- 3:35Speaker 1: It is a very deep cut. I thought it came
- 3:37Speaker 1: in a small baggie. Yeah.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I haven't had this, bro.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I have not had this, but you know, New Orleans
- 3:42Speaker 1: has one of the largest, uh, Vietnamese populations.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Really in the country. I did not know that. I've
- 3:46Speaker 2: never been to Nola. I think so. You haven't never.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Oh man. A lot of stuff shoots there for some reason.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I just haven't, haven't been there before. Um, Yeah. It's mythical.
- 3:55Speaker 2: You know, Nashville reminded me of Austin a little bit.
- 3:56Speaker 2: You know, 6th Street. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That promenade a
- 3:58Speaker 2: little bit. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Sort of, yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that Broadway, that area. That area is really
- 4:02Speaker 1: interesting down there. What else about Nashville that I really like?
- 4:06Speaker 2: You go to the soccer games ever? Nashville SC? I
- 4:09Speaker 2: haven't been to that.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I go to watch Lipscomb College. They play soccer there.
- 4:12Speaker 2: What?
- 4:12Speaker 1: At Lipscomb College.
- 4:14Speaker 2: No way.
- 4:14Speaker 1: It's a college, and they have soccer, and so I'll
- 4:17Speaker 1: go watch some of their games.
- 4:18Speaker 2: What's their student body population? That's a good question. Pull
- 4:21Speaker 2: it up. Lipscomb College. Let's see.
- 4:23Speaker 1: It's one of those colleges that right next to it
- 4:25Speaker 1: has the high school also and then the children's school
- 4:28Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 4:29Speaker 2: So it's like you can go there from K to
- 4:31Speaker 2: senior year of college. Yeah, you could go from K
- 4:33Speaker 2: to 40. 4,800 students. Okay.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But their soccer team has been ranked in the top
- 4:40Speaker 1: 25 the past few years.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So you love, like, you're a diehard season ticket holder.
- 4:44Speaker 2: You're there all the time. Sometimes I'll text my neighbor
- 4:48Speaker 2: who's a coach. You're like, hey, you mind if I
- 4:49Speaker 2: pop by? You might just pop by, and they're cool.
- 4:51Speaker 2: And he'll be on the field.
- 4:51Speaker 1: He'll be like, yeah, sure, pull up.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Do you get, like, the McConaughey UT pass? You can
- 4:54Speaker 2: go wherever you want?
- 4:55Speaker 1: Um it's there's not a lot of bleachers so.
- 4:58Speaker 2: It's pretty you're basically on the field all the time
- 5:00Speaker 2: yeah i was amazed i was at that that ut
- 5:02Speaker 2: georgia game mcconaughey gets oh you went to that he
- 5:04Speaker 2: gets full license yeah he could do whatever he wants
- 5:06Speaker 2: because i already had a field pass i thought i
- 5:08Speaker 2: was pretty right you know high level in some way
- 5:12Speaker 2: he's like with the coach he's calling plays he's coaching
- 5:15Speaker 2: he's taping a guy he's taping a guy up he's
- 5:17Speaker 2: like you're gonna be all right he's living the experience
- 5:19Speaker 2: you know I got a buddy who's on the Nashville
- 5:21Speaker 2: soccer team. His name's Alex Mule. Oh, really? Let's pull
- 5:23Speaker 2: him up.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Let's give him some shine because I need to go
- 5:26Speaker 1: watch him. You think if I hit him up, he
- 5:27Speaker 1: would invite him to a game?
- 5:28Speaker 2: Absolutely. And the games are often sold out. You know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: I grew up with this guy. Alex Mule. Yeah, but
- 5:34Speaker 2: he was always M-U-Y-L. That's the bane of his life, man. Oh, yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 2: People that can't spell Mule, yeah. This is amazing, man.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I wish this is like, this is what AI is
- 5:43Speaker 2: going to be in 20 years. Just say it and
- 5:45Speaker 2: it pops up. Oh, as we're talking, the computer follows. Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I never thought about that. Have you tried, do
- 5:52Speaker 2: you use the... VR? The Vision? Oculus, that kind of thing? No, no, no, the, well,
- 5:57Speaker 2: Oculus too, I guess, but the AirPod. What do you mean,
- 5:58Speaker 2: like Blue Blockers or something? The Vision Pro.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Vision Pro, what is it?
- 6:02Speaker 2: The Apple Helmet. But tell me about Mule. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:06Speaker 2: my bad.
- 6:06Speaker 1: So you played ball with him growing up?
- 6:08Speaker 2: I played ball with him growing up, and he was
- 6:09Speaker 2: just gifted, you know. It's tough. You know, you could
- 6:12Speaker 2: play like, it's like that Last Dance Chicago Bulls documentary.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Some of those guys will be partying all night, and
- 6:17Speaker 2: then they'll drop, like Dennis Rodman will drop 40, you know.
- 6:19Speaker 2: It's like, I could work my ass off. If you
- 6:22Speaker 2: don't have the gift of physical talent, of athleticism, you're cooked. Yeah,
- 6:25Speaker 2: you're done, dude.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah, some people got that damn, you got a damn
- 6:28Speaker 1: foot Mozart out there.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I don't have that. Yeah, yeah. Alex Mule is a
- 6:31Speaker 2: foot Mozart.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Really? Yes.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Oh, that's fire.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I got to go check him out, man. I
- 6:35Speaker 1: haven't been to see a game.
- 6:35Speaker 2: It's unfortunate.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I did get to go see Vanderbilt, which is the
- 6:40Speaker 1: college that's the SEC college that's actually in Nashville.
- 6:43Speaker 2: That's what I visited. Yeah, I was at Vanderbilt. Oh, yeah,
- 6:45Speaker 2: I saw a video of you out there. You know,
- 6:48Speaker 2: I never had that American college experience. You know, I
- 6:50Speaker 2: went to Columbia for a second. I went to NYU,
- 6:52Speaker 2: so I'm jealous of that. But Vanderbilt, respect to Vanderbilt,
- 6:55Speaker 2: it didn't feel like UT or it didn't feel like
- 6:58Speaker 2: I had a huge campus or a huge. No, it's
- 7:00Speaker 2: a smaller energy. Yeah.
- 7:01Speaker 1: But we went to one game this year, they played
- 7:03Speaker 1: Alabama and they beat, they upset Alabama.
- 7:05Speaker 2: So that was huge. It was crazy. Because usually their
- 7:08Speaker 2: football program is not that good, right? It's not. Yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 2: And they know that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah, it's
- 7:12Speaker 2: not a secret. No, no, no. You got to keep
- 7:13Speaker 2: keeping their place.
- 7:14Speaker 1: But that was the game they won. And look, they
- 7:16Speaker 1: didn't even, it was like all these lawyers and attorneys
- 7:18Speaker 1: like tearing down the goalposts.
- 7:19Speaker 2: No way.
- 7:19Speaker 1: They even had, they had a, there we are after
- 7:22Speaker 1: the game, we actually, we.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Is it a big law program?
- 7:25Speaker 1: Carl Lee is their coach and he's an awesome guy.
- 7:29Speaker 1: I mean, he's a class act. He just gets smoked here.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Oh, we got to, yeah. There you are.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Dude, what are you doing on the field, dude? Dude,
- 7:35Speaker 1: what are you doing on the field, dude? You almost
- 7:38Speaker 1: ran that person over.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Hey, bro. That's amazing. Put on a helmet, girl. That
- 7:42Speaker 2: was a girl that should not have been. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:44Speaker 2: You almost ran her over.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Yeah, she shouldn't be playing wide out, you know? It's
- 7:48Speaker 1: just different. But no, it's a, what's it like there?
- 7:51Speaker 1: It's a, oh, after the game. So they had like engineers,
- 7:55Speaker 1: like how should we take this down? And then there's
- 7:56Speaker 1: just drunk kids like just rip it down. Yeah. And
- 7:59Speaker 1: then they carried it down Broadway, which is like the
- 8:01Speaker 1: street you were talking about, the goalpost, because they never.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Had it happen. And those kids had never broken a
- 8:05Speaker 2: law in their life.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Yeah. They even tried to valet park the goalpost at
- 8:08Speaker 1: like a restaurant.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Is it a fancy, like an expensive, fancy type school?
- 8:12Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think it's a lot of, it's
- 8:14Speaker 1: a lot of kids that have never played probably dice
- 8:16Speaker 1: in an alley, I would say that. So I would
- 8:18Speaker 1: say it's, you know, probably pretty decent.
- 8:20Speaker 2: You know? Man, that's pretty crazy, huh?
- 8:23Speaker 1: But it is a really cool, it's a cool program, man.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I feel like I could see three stadiums from my hotel.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I feel like I could see the Vanderbilt one, the
- 8:28Speaker 2: Tennessee Titans one, and Nissan Stadium. Shout out, Nissan. Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Is Nissan a big Tennessee car manufacturer? That's a good question.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I don't think so. It sounds.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Nissan?
- 8:39Speaker 2: It's Japan. Japanese. It's Japanese. Huh. Interesting.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Dude, thanks for coming in, Timothy. I appreciate it, man.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Man, thank you. You know, I.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Not with the shameless plug, but I got this movie,
- 8:52Speaker 2: A Complete Unknown, coming out on Christmas Day.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Did you actually see it?
- 8:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Fantastic, man. So I'm excited that we can actually talk
- 8:57Speaker 2: about it. And I was very much in the time
- 9:00Speaker 2: period of the movie the whole time and trying to
- 9:01Speaker 2: stay without being a dick, you know, within the bounds
- 9:05Speaker 2: of the character. But somebody in the hair and makeup
- 9:06Speaker 2: trailer at the end of the day, they would play
- 9:07Speaker 2: this podcast, you know, which is how I discovered it.
- 9:10Speaker 2: And particularly the episodes with the garbage man and sort
- 9:13Speaker 2: of like the real life episodes, the lunch lady, the coroner. Wayne.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Wayne, the garbage man. He's doing good. those were, those
- 9:20Speaker 2: were like awesome episodes, you know, sort of like worldviews
- 9:24Speaker 2: that I wouldn't get otherwise, you know? And, uh, And
- 9:27Speaker 2: you're from New York, right? And I'm from New York,
- 9:28Speaker 2: so Garbage Man, he totally recontextualized that for me.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Bro, he did a great job. Because they used to have,
- 9:34Speaker 1: they used to have.
- 9:34Speaker 2: I used to hate them, you know. Yeah. Yeah, because
- 9:37Speaker 2: you think they're taking their time. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 9:40Speaker 2: And I realize how tough that job is. It's rough.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I mean, he was like throwing dogs in the back
- 9:44Speaker 2: of the, I mean, that story is, do you remember that?
- 9:46Speaker 1: There's a lot of, yeah, a lot of, yeah, missing.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Yeah. Formerly living things started to disappear. In the back
- 9:54Speaker 2: of a.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Well, they used to have incinerators in the buildings.
- 9:58Speaker 2: That's what was craziest. Right, right, right. So that.
- 10:00Speaker 1: the people would put their trash, it would hit the incinerator.
- 10:02Speaker 1: And then they would just have, I mean, this is
- 10:04Speaker 1: like six or seven years ago, I think, but they
- 10:05Speaker 1: would just have soot in barrels, you know, or in
- 10:09Speaker 1: cans on the side of the street. And then they
- 10:11Speaker 1: started getting bags. But he said, yeah, there's been times where.
- 10:13Speaker 1: A lot of things have shown up. But thank you, man,
- 10:15Speaker 1: for checking it out.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Or just hearing it on accident. No, hearing it
- 10:18Speaker 2: on accident and loving it. And I'm so happy you
- 10:20Speaker 2: saw this movie. And this is like, you know, I
- 10:22Speaker 2: hope this isn't like a shameless self-plug. No, it's not
- 10:25Speaker 2: at all. We're happy that you're here and it's interesting.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
- 10:29Speaker 1: And you get to do a biopic or biopic.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I still don't know, man. Biopic sounds like a medical procedure. Yeah.
- 10:36Speaker 2: You know, that sounds like someone, you know, is inspecting
- 10:38Speaker 2: your lungs to see if you played the role the
- 10:40Speaker 2: right way. I like biopic. Biopic sounds fancier.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Yeah, biopic does sound fancier. I think that's true.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Yeah, biopic.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Was it like, so let me think about a question
- 10:49Speaker 1: like that. Just so people know, this is about a
- 10:51Speaker 1: four or five year period in Bob Dylan's life.
- 10:54Speaker 2: This is a four or five year period in the
- 10:56Speaker 2: early Bob Dylan's life. And I'm sure a lot of
- 10:59Speaker 2: people listening to your program are already fans of Bob Dylan's,
- 11:01Speaker 2: but I'm sure a lot aren't because to my generation,
- 11:03Speaker 2: you know. Yeah, some people don't know. Some don't know.
- 11:05Speaker 2: And he's really one of the, most fantastic American artists
- 11:08Speaker 2: of all time and has influenced our culture in so
- 11:11Speaker 2: many deep ways. And it's just, you know, I grew
- 11:13Speaker 2: up on, on Kid Cudi and hip hop, and that
- 11:15Speaker 2: was really my, you know, my, my, my passion. And
- 11:19Speaker 2: then somewhere in my twenties, because this movie I was
- 11:22Speaker 2: working on, I became obsessed with this, this man, Bob Dylan,
- 11:25Speaker 2: who's absolutely, I could just speak about him endlessly. And,
- 11:29Speaker 2: you know, I would love if people saw this movie and,
- 11:33Speaker 2: even if they got a passing interest, discover the world
- 11:35Speaker 2: of Bob Dylan. I feel like we get to be
- 11:36Speaker 2: a bridge or a gateway to this guy. And I
- 11:39Speaker 2: hope this isn't one of your episodes where you got
- 11:41Speaker 2: like someone, you know, like one of the ones people
- 11:44Speaker 2: skip because it's like a person plugging. So, you know
- 11:47Speaker 2: what I'm saying? Like a, I don't want to use
- 11:49Speaker 2: that word celebrity, but like, you know. Because my favorite
- 11:52Speaker 2: episodes of yours are... Oh, like a fancier person, hypothetically fancier? No,
- 11:56Speaker 2: I don't mean it like that, but just like... Like
- 11:57Speaker 2: I said, I like the ones that are off the cuff.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yeah, we don't have a lot of celebrities on, really.
- 12:00Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I never really used
- 12:02Speaker 2: that word, but... No, that's okay.
- 12:04Speaker 1: No, I don't think so. Look, man, I think... I
- 12:06Speaker 1: feel like this part of.
- 12:07Speaker 2: The job is that, though. Because when I'm working, I'm
- 12:09Speaker 2: really very much in it. You know what I mean?
- 12:11Speaker 2: And then here... Anyway.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Yeah, actors get kind of a weird rap, though, because
- 12:15Speaker 1: then they also have to be celebrities.
- 12:17Speaker 2: In some way. Yeah, in some way. So that's it. Well,
- 12:21Speaker 2: if you want to get your movie out, there's only
- 12:24Speaker 2: a limit of how pretentious in some way, you know, whatever,
- 12:29Speaker 2: you know. I want this, especially this movie. I believe
- 12:32Speaker 2: in this movie and I believe in this man. He's
- 12:34Speaker 2: a tremendous artist. So I want to, you know, get
- 12:38Speaker 2: it out there. Yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 1: No, I don't think that's, man, I think that, like,
- 12:42Speaker 1: you did the movie with the young man with drug
- 12:45Speaker 1: addiction with Steve Carell's son.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, beautiful boy, yeah.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Which was awesome, man.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I know you struggle with that a little bit, yeah.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Yeah, man, and so many people have, and it's like,
- 12:54Speaker 1: so I don't think there's any doubt in people's mind
- 12:57Speaker 1: about your ability to be a bridge between whether it
- 13:02Speaker 1: be a story or a person. to a new generation
- 13:08Speaker 1: or to new listeners or people kind of imbibing it.
- 13:13Speaker 2: And I appreciate you bringing up Beautiful Boy and I
- 13:15Speaker 2: feel like you're doing the exact same thing, not to
- 13:16Speaker 2: just blow smoke up each other's ass, but I feel
- 13:18Speaker 2: like when you.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Oh, we're a couple of naughty Native Americans right here.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Come on, come on. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. If you're listening to this and not watching this,
- 13:27Speaker 2: we're fully at the bottom half of our bodies.
- 13:28Speaker 1: We're out of your booth and it's getting spicy out here.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I don't even know.
- 13:31Speaker 2: What that means. Okay, I don't either. I don't even
- 13:33Speaker 2: know what that means. Take that out. No, no, no.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Because I know you speak on it too and you
- 13:38Speaker 2: probably empower people, you know, that otherwise would be– doing
- 13:43Speaker 2: some naughty stuff. Yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 1: People want to hear us. People want to see it.
- 13:46Speaker 1: People want to see like a little bit of a
- 13:47Speaker 1: journey that they can relate to or hear about.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Um, so about the character, like, so Bob Dylan has
- 13:53Speaker 1: like such a famous, cause yeah, a lot of younger
- 13:55Speaker 1: generation might not know about him, you know? Yeah. And, um,
- 13:58Speaker 1: a lot of, um, he has such like a, That's.
- 14:03Speaker 2: A good Bob Dylan, man. Was it? Yeah, that was good.
- 14:05Speaker 1: How did you do when you first decided? Because I'm
- 14:07Speaker 1: sure you had to practice it in your room or something. Like,
- 14:09Speaker 1: tell me about the first time.
- 14:10Speaker 2: That was super gradual. Can't do it with people that
- 14:12Speaker 2: are fans. Because people that are fans of Bob Dylan
- 14:13Speaker 2: will go, they'll all tell you you got it wrong.
- 14:16Speaker 2: That's the trouble with playing someone so famous and beloved.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Everyone's got an opinion about him. Yeah. So you got
- 14:21Speaker 2: to put the blinders on and just kind of do
- 14:22Speaker 2: it around people that you know. Look, man, I'm usually
- 14:26Speaker 2: not that prick actor who's, like, obliging his friends or
- 14:28Speaker 2: whatever to listen to the character he's working on. But
- 14:31Speaker 2: this is the one time I did that. Oh, I
- 14:33Speaker 2: think you have to do that. Yeah, I had to
- 14:35Speaker 2: do it, man.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Because, yeah, you don't want to get out there and
- 14:36Speaker 1: do a bad job of it.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Exactly, man. This would have been blasphemous. I would have
- 14:40Speaker 2: gotten killed. I could still get killed. Yeah. But now
- 14:44Speaker 2: it seems like, you know, getting a little bit of love.
- 14:47Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? You might be back. Hey,
- 14:49Speaker 2: snipers down. Lay down, snipers. Yeah.
- 14:53Speaker 1: But was there a moment where you tried that, where
- 14:54Speaker 1: you actually tried it?
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yes, very gradually. I had to. There's a great dialect
- 15:00Speaker 2: coach named Tim Monick. You know, you can work with
- 15:01Speaker 2: people that are like experts in this field and they'll
- 15:03Speaker 2: tell you how to go about it. This man, Tim Monick,
- 15:05Speaker 2: invented dialect coaching. He came up with it. Tim Monick.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Let's bring him up. M-O-N-I-C-H. He's worked with Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 15:13Speaker 2: He's worked with everyone, you know. So he's a famous
- 15:17Speaker 2: dialect coach. Man, I've never looked him up before. Tim Monick,
- 15:21Speaker 2: there he is right there. Okay, is that the man? Yeah,
- 15:23Speaker 2: there I am with him. I got in trouble anyway.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Oh, you did?
- 15:26Speaker 2: What happened to you? I got in trouble because the
- 15:28Speaker 2: strike had just hit and I was just hanging out
- 15:29Speaker 2: with him and I didn't really get in trouble. People
- 15:32Speaker 2: thought I was a scab and I was working with him. Oh, yeah.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Crossing lisp lines or whatever. You're right, dude. You're right.
- 15:43Speaker 2: You're right. That's the only union where you'd be crossing
- 15:47Speaker 2: the picket line by working on your tongue. But it
- 15:50Speaker 2: was a real thing, dude. Oh, yeah. Really? Stop working
- 15:54Speaker 2: on the accent. How dare you learn Spanish? Yeah, exactly.
- 15:57Speaker 2: That's crazy. Wow. Man, next time I'll call you. Because actually,
- 16:01Speaker 2: when you put it like that, it's like, what are
- 16:03Speaker 2: you supposed to do? And I wasn't working with him.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I was hanging out. We went to a shitty, super shitty...
- 16:10Speaker 2: It's bleak, man. Like, the way Bob Dylan, when he
- 16:12Speaker 2: came up, there was, like, all these cafes in downtown
- 16:13Speaker 2: New York and the music. And now I was trying
- 16:15Speaker 2: to find the folk scene in modern-day Manhattan. It was brutal.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Oh, I think in Manhattan, probably. Maybe, like, somewhere in
- 16:20Speaker 1: the village, probably, right?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yeah, but it was brutal. It's still rough. I mean,
- 16:23Speaker 2: I went to Cafe Wah, where Bob Dylan came up,
- 16:25Speaker 2: and it's just, like, Aerosmith covers now. So some guy goes,
- 16:29Speaker 2: Dream on! And you're like, oh, man. Dream on! Yeah,
- 16:32Speaker 2: this is not how it was. Dream on!
- 16:34Speaker 1: It has like a small Aeropostale in the back kind of. Yeah, exactly. Yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 1: that's kind of a bummer. Did you have to meet
- 16:40Speaker 1: Bob to get into this? I never got the chance
- 16:42Speaker 1: to meet him.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Not yet at all? No. Oh, he's super reclusive.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:45Speaker 2: He's elusive and reclusive. He's that reclusive? Yeah. I don't
- 16:47Speaker 2: know if he'll ever see the movie. Yeah. He did
- 16:49Speaker 2: this X post, I've been taught to say. It's not
- 16:52Speaker 2: tweet anymore, I guess. Fucking X post. But he did
- 16:55Speaker 2: it like three days ago, you know. And that was
- 16:59Speaker 2: more than... He....
- 17:01Speaker 1: There's a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Timothee Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy's a brilliant,
- 17:08Speaker 1: Timmy is a brilliant actor. I kind of respect it though.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Nice. Honoring your youth. Timmy's my 12 year old expression, dude.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Timmy's a brilliant actor.
- 17:19Speaker 1: So I'm sure he's going to be a completely believable
- 17:21Speaker 1: as me or younger me or some other me. The
- 17:23Speaker 1: film's taken from Elijah Wald's Dylan Goes Electric, a book
- 17:26Speaker 1: that came out in 2015. It's a fantastic retelling of
- 17:29Speaker 1: events from the early 60s that led up to the
- 17:31Speaker 1: fiasco at Newport after you've seen the movie, read the book.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Oh, that's nice. Super sweet. So do you even talk
- 17:38Speaker 2: to him on the phone or anything yet? No, nothing.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I never got the chance to talk to him. I
- 17:41Speaker 2: like that you pointed out the Timmy. I tried, you know,
- 17:43Speaker 2: when I was 19, 20, I was evolving into Timothy.
- 17:47Speaker 2: You said some letters. Add some letters. Add some letters
- 17:51Speaker 2: from Timmy to Timothy.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought you were going Tim, sorry.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Tim would be, you know. You're going Timothy. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Like I said, from Timmy to Timothy. Yeah, 40s, 50s,
- 17:58Speaker 2: couple ex-wives. Then you go Tim. Then you go Tim.
- 18:01Speaker 2: You know, I'm like mowing my lawn all day. Yeah,
- 18:07Speaker 2: hey Tim. Exactly. Missed a spot. Missed a spot. You're like, oh,
- 18:11Speaker 2: there's a bird's nest there. Calm down. Sort of a
- 18:14Speaker 2: disgruntled expression on my face watching my kids' sports games
- 18:17Speaker 2: because they're not playing to the level that I wish
- 18:19Speaker 2: they were.
- 18:20Speaker 1: At a swim meet, too.
- 18:21Speaker 2: At a swim meet.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Swim meet's the worst because you can't even talk to
- 18:23Speaker 1: the person next to you because it echoes so much
- 18:25Speaker 1: in the room.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I've never been to a swim meet in my life.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Even if you whisper a little, the people hear it.
- 18:29Speaker 2: It travels. Yes. It travels.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Oh, you cannot gossip.
- 18:31Speaker 2: How many swim meets? You go to Lipscomb College swim meets?
- 18:34Speaker 2: I mean, I don't go to that. I did it. Yeah,
- 18:35Speaker 2: I did. Yeah, be careful, dude.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I do.
- 18:37Speaker 2: You're right. And it is.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And I definitely watch from my car with binoculars. So
- 18:40Speaker 1: it's not too creepy.
- 18:41Speaker 2: So it's normal. It's totally normal. So the fact you've
- 18:44Speaker 2: been doing it since your early 20s means that, you know.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:47Speaker 2: It's cool. I've got a grandfather in. Your grandfather in.
- 18:49Speaker 2: That guy's not a pedophile. He's an artist. He's an artist.
- 18:53Speaker 2: And this show happened, you know, this show sprouted in
- 18:56Speaker 2: this period of you doing that. So how can you
- 18:57Speaker 2: fault the process? The proof's in the pudding. Yeah.
- 19:00Speaker 1: How do you expect him not to rehearse his own life?
- 19:04Speaker 1: But yeah, that's the thing. You just can't gossip at
- 19:07Speaker 1: a swim meet, man. What are we talking about?
- 19:09Speaker 2: I don't know. I've never been to a swim meet.
- 19:11Speaker 2: You know, that's a very non, you know, like there's
- 19:13Speaker 2: four pools in New York City.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 19:15Speaker 2: You know what I mean? That's true, huh? We don't
- 19:16Speaker 2: have swim meets, but we have... What do you guys
- 19:19Speaker 2: have there? We play dice in the alleys, like you
- 19:21Speaker 2: were saying before. No, I'm kidding. But, you know, I
- 19:23Speaker 2: was talking about this the other day. Like, my high school,
- 19:25Speaker 2: they wouldn't let us out for lunch. Would they let
- 19:26Speaker 2: you out for lunch or no?
- 19:27Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 19:27Speaker 2: You could do whatever you wanted at lunch. They didn't
- 19:29Speaker 2: let us out. I feel like my skin tone from
- 19:31Speaker 2: when I went into high school, by the time I
- 19:33Speaker 2: got out, I looked sickly. I haven't recovered.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Oh, it got very, you got kind of like, yeah, very... Anemic.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Yep, anemic. I'm sure.
- 19:39Speaker 1: What else is it called? Kind of Boo Radley-esque.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. You know.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Yeah, because they should give you at least an hour
- 19:46Speaker 1: in the sun. They give it to inmates.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Yeah. And just because I'm learning so much. studies, I
- 19:50Speaker 2: don't get it. I don't get it. Exactly. And then
- 19:52Speaker 2: I'd be in the basement doing, just acting all day.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Just because I'm learning fucking Voltaire. I don't get 40
- 19:55Speaker 1: minutes in the sun. Yeah, I don't get 40 minutes
- 19:57Speaker 1: in the sun.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Nothing.
- 19:57Speaker 1: A raisin got in the sun.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Hey. I don't. Hey, that's a good play. That was
- 20:01Speaker 2: right there, man. Denzel Washington, baby. I will accept that.
- 20:04Speaker 2: I will accept that. Denzel Washington. Thank you very much.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I heard your big... Play guy. Really?
- 20:09Speaker 1: No.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Oh, thanks.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I was like, God, I don't want that going around.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Hey, man, listen, that's the subversive. No one would expect it.
- 20:17Speaker 2: That's very low key, dude. Is there a theater in Nashville?
- 20:21Speaker 1: Yeah, there is a theater program. That's a good question.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I grew up in Louisiana. We didn't, we had some theater.
- 20:26Speaker 1: We just did like.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Did you ever do theater growing up? Yeah, I did.
- 20:28Speaker 2: I did.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Well, it was just called drama club or whatever. And
- 20:30Speaker 1: it was a lot of people who was, it was
- 20:32Speaker 1: a lot of people I think that were wanted to
- 20:33Speaker 1: be actors. And then a lot of people that just
- 20:35Speaker 1: were kind of like.
- 20:36Speaker 2: The outsiders. Yeah, outsiders. I went to the high school.
- 20:38Speaker 2: It was the opposite. The drama kids were the. Oh,
- 20:40Speaker 2: the cool kids. Yeah. And the basketball kids were like,
- 20:44Speaker 2: there's like four of them.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Bro, that's got to be interesting because a lot of
- 20:47Speaker 1: people don't get that opportunity.
- 20:48Speaker 2: No, it skewed my perception of the real world because
- 20:50Speaker 2: then I got to Columbia and I was like, oh, shit,
- 20:51Speaker 2: the value system is totally different. But actually, in a
- 20:54Speaker 2: serious way, it kind of motivated me to go pursue
- 20:56Speaker 2: my acting even harder. But did you ever think about acting?
- 20:59Speaker 1: You're like, what's the exchange rate on this Hamlet scene
- 21:01Speaker 1: I have? No, exactly, exactly, exactly. Yeah, I did just
- 21:05Speaker 1: some stuff at school, but I would always mess it up.
- 21:07Speaker 1: We did Sherlock Holmes or something. And I was like
- 21:11Speaker 1: Watson or whatever, his buddy or whatever. It's like his
- 21:13Speaker 1: man crush, whatever. And our guy was very like progressive.
- 21:17Speaker 1: So we tried to make it there to be like
- 21:18Speaker 1: this small like lover scene or just like some ambiance
- 21:22Speaker 1: between Sherlock and Watson.
- 21:24Speaker 2: You didn't go for it? I don't know if I
- 21:25Speaker 2: went for it or not. I was like 13. You
- 21:27Speaker 2: gotta go out there, man. You gotta be bold. You
- 21:29Speaker 2: gotta be bold. You would have earned the respect of
- 21:30Speaker 2: all your classmates. Or actually, I don't know where you're from.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Who knows? Who knows? Pick on either way.
- 21:35Speaker 1: But yeah, there was this definitely kind of romantic where
- 21:38Speaker 1: They're looking for the clues, and they're kind of finding
- 21:40Speaker 1: each other. That's what the guy said. And I was like,
- 21:42Speaker 1: this seems like insane.
- 21:44Speaker 2: But you didn't do it. I tried my best.
- 21:46Speaker 1: But then I remember the first night I got out
- 21:48Speaker 1: there on stage, I took on this Latino accent for
- 21:50Speaker 1: some reason.
- 21:50Speaker 2: That's a strong choice, man. It's all about strong choices.
- 21:52Speaker 2: And nobody knew it was coming. Perfect. And I was like,
- 21:54Speaker 2: what's up, Holmes? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:56Speaker 1: And then– so, yeah, that was just– and that's when
- 21:59Speaker 1: I realized it was tough for me to be in
- 22:00Speaker 1: some ensemble things. I just wanted to be by myself,
- 22:03Speaker 1: you know, like.
- 22:04Speaker 2: That kind of thing. Yeah, you found– I mean, that's
- 22:06Speaker 2: where it formed, right? Yeah, that's where stand-up came from.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Would you do a movie if it came your way?
- 22:11Speaker 2: If I've got to make it myself, I think. Okay,
- 22:13Speaker 2: all right. You don't want to be slotted into something.
- 22:15Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I just am super protective about myself for some reason,
- 22:19Speaker 1: which may seem kind of weird.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I don't know. For some reason, you had me on.
- 22:22Speaker 2: That was a bad choice. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, a
- 22:25Speaker 2: good choice, dude.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Yeah. So in New York, when you were a kid,
- 22:29Speaker 1: who was your best friend?
- 22:30Speaker 2: Best friend growing up? Nobody, man. I was always pursuing acting, dude.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Were you really? I was born, I was bred at
- 22:37Speaker 2: Warner Brothers Studios in a little embryo fluid. It was
- 22:40Speaker 2: just like that? Yeah, no, man, you know, probably Brett Goldstein,
- 22:44Speaker 2: you know.
- 22:45Speaker 1: A kid in your building or something from school?
- 22:46Speaker 2: No, he was a kid on the Upper West Side
- 22:47Speaker 2: and my older sister was friends with his older sister, Brenna,
- 22:51Speaker 2: and just, I think they still live there, Greg and Bess,
- 22:55Speaker 2: those are his parents, and Brett, you know, that was
- 22:57Speaker 2: my whole friend group. Then they all, my whole friend
- 22:59Speaker 2: group went to this school called Computer School and then
- 23:01Speaker 2: I went to a school called Booker T. Washington so
- 23:02Speaker 2: I lost my I lost my friend group there. And
- 23:05Speaker 2: do you have a roommate now?
- 23:07Speaker 1: No.
- 23:08Speaker 2: You don't? Thank God, man. That's like more than that. Sorry. No,
- 23:10Speaker 2: I mean, but fucking that's more than anything. That's what
- 23:13Speaker 2: Jeslyn Nick says on Netflix. He says, you really made
- 23:16Speaker 2: it when you don't have a roommate anymore.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Oh, in New York. In life. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I think, well, especially in New York because
- 23:23Speaker 1: it's so expensive. In other places, some people get a
- 23:25Speaker 1: roommate because they just get maybe lonesome or whatever.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Do you have a roommate?
- 23:29Speaker 1: I don't have a roommate, you know. I would like
- 23:31Speaker 1: to get one or I'd like to get a wife
- 23:32Speaker 1: maybe this year. Where, where, uh, next year, how do
- 23:34Speaker 1: you go?
- 23:35Speaker 2: 2020 wide. That's what I'm calling it. How do you
- 23:37Speaker 2: go about that?
- 23:38Speaker 1: I think getting out there and meeting people.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Do you have friends that you trust, um, that you
- 23:43Speaker 2: would trust, like to set you up.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Some, but sometimes you're shocked at who they'll set you
- 23:47Speaker 1: up with.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Really? Like you're insulted.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I mean, you're just like, well, we must think that
- 23:51Speaker 1: you think differently. How so?
- 23:54Speaker 2: Give me an example.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Uh, just like no names, but just somebody put me
- 23:58Speaker 1: all with like a, you know, just a, um, a
- 24:01Speaker 1: woman that had like, you know, a Any way I
- 24:03Speaker 1: say this, I lose here. Okay.
- 24:05Speaker 2: All right. All right. All right. All right. No offense.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Just people that there was no. How do you do
- 24:10Speaker 2: this format? Like you're never nervous that people are going
- 24:11Speaker 2: to watch that you're talking about?
- 24:14Speaker 1: Yeah, but I just make sure that I just try
- 24:16Speaker 1: and don't say anything that would be really mean about somebody.
- 24:18Speaker 2: So right there it could have got weird.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:20Speaker 2: And you send, you'll send scary people after people, you know. Oh, well,
- 24:23Speaker 2: I mean, we'll... You'll send guys in suits outside people's houses,
- 24:26Speaker 2: make sure they don't.
- 24:27Speaker 1: There's a podcast sphere out there that things, you know,
- 24:30Speaker 1: get handled or whatever.
- 24:31Speaker 2: I don't want to use that term. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:32Speaker 2: That's terrifying.
- 24:33Speaker 1: There's no lawyer involved.
- 24:35Speaker 2: I'll say that. You're just winging it. The Lord is
- 24:37Speaker 2: our lawyer. That's some of these people's motto. Right, right, right, right.
- 24:40Speaker 1: So it gets kind of like that. This episode is
- 24:45Speaker 1: sponsored by PrizePix, baby.
- 24:47Speaker 2: You know it.
- 24:48Speaker 1: You picking prizes?
- 24:50Speaker 2: I am.

- 29:41Speaker 1: slash Theo. Do you, uh, when you go into a
- 29:46Speaker 1: role like this, do you start to think like, so
- 29:49Speaker 1: a lot of younger people will think that you're, you're
- 29:53Speaker 1: Bob Dylan. You almost become, you almost take a, piece
- 29:56Speaker 1: of the person's existence in a strange way does that
- 29:58Speaker 1: make any sense.
- 29:59Speaker 2: To you yeah man yes and no you know because
- 30:01Speaker 2: i've become such a fan of his that um it's
- 30:04Speaker 2: not like i feel like i'm a blemish on a
- 30:06Speaker 2: legacy but i know.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Not at all that's what i mean no no i
- 30:08Speaker 1: know we're gonna think when they yeah some people are
- 30:10Speaker 1: gonna think you are but they're gonna think that when
- 30:12Speaker 1: they think of him in the future your face will
- 30:15Speaker 1: come i'm just saying that even.
- 30:16Speaker 2: If i have like you know a healthy amount of
- 30:18Speaker 2: self-respect it's never gonna come close to who he is
- 30:21Speaker 2: so i like the idea that i could be a
- 30:22Speaker 2: a bridge but like i had a buddy that said
- 30:24Speaker 2: um the Johnny Cash movie, Joaquin Phoenix, who is the
- 30:27Speaker 2: same director who walked the line, he said, you know,
- 30:29Speaker 2: I actually like Joaquin's versions of Johnny Cash's songs better
- 30:32Speaker 2: than Johnny Cash's songs. But I never wanted that. Sincerely,
- 30:35Speaker 2: I don't want that to happen here. And I wanted
- 30:36Speaker 2: to protect against it because Bob's got this raw voice.
- 30:39Speaker 2: He's got this, like, iron voice. And I never wanted
- 30:43Speaker 2: these songs to be sort of, like, more gentle than
- 30:46Speaker 2: his songs, you know? And I had to fight against
- 30:47Speaker 2: that because the recordings we made, a lot of them
- 30:49Speaker 2: were super... It's hard, man. He was playing on a
- 30:52Speaker 2: beat-up guitar with shitty recorders. He had a bronchitis in
- 30:55Speaker 2: his early 20s. His voice was all fucked up. And
- 30:58Speaker 2: I didn't want it to be watered down. Because he
- 31:02Speaker 2: very purposefully was... He liked Jack Kerouac and Moriarty. A
- 31:06Speaker 2: lot of the books I read said he didn't have
- 31:08Speaker 2: great hygiene and stuff like that. So I didn't want
- 31:09Speaker 2: the movie to be watered down all of a sudden.
- 31:12Speaker 1: You wanted to honor him as much as you could.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 31:14Speaker 1: But also without being him as much.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Not do this Hollywood version, basically. Because these biopics, it's
- 31:20Speaker 2: a fine line, man. And I've never done anything like this.
- 31:22Speaker 2: I usually play a role.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Yeah, Wonka you did.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Wonka I did. But that's maybe not real. No,
- 31:27Speaker 2: but it's real. Yeah, thank God. Well, don't tell the children.
- 31:30Speaker 2: Thank God, thank God. No, but also, you know, probably
- 31:33Speaker 2: have to get psychiatric help. But no, and there's a
- 31:36Speaker 2: certain pressure with that Wonka too. People are like very
- 31:38Speaker 2: protective of characters they love. You know, they don't want,
- 31:40Speaker 2: and there's sort of like a cynicism about Hollywood, you know,
- 31:42Speaker 2: about like why are they keep revisiting. The Wonka thing
- 31:45Speaker 2: I felt was justified because it's a new story. We
- 31:47Speaker 2: weren't doing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We were doing
- 31:49Speaker 2: sort of an origin story. And, uh, by the way,
- 31:52Speaker 2: I don't know if you've seen Wonka. Have you? Yeah.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Which one have I seen? Um, yeah, I've seen all
- 31:56Speaker 1: of them.
- 31:56Speaker 2: You watched it while you were in the car spying
- 31:58Speaker 2: on the, on the, on the list. You had it
- 32:03Speaker 2: playing on the audio.
- 32:05Speaker 1: If you, first of all, if you've never seen the
- 32:07Speaker 1: Wonka movie, you just listen to the audio.
- 32:09Speaker 2: That's a little bit, that's already weird too. It's kind
- 32:10Speaker 2: of a, yeah. Yeah. It's interesting. They had Stevie Wonder
- 32:12Speaker 2: at the movie last night. Oh really?
- 32:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Interesting bridge right there.
- 32:16Speaker 2: No, but I was saying thing, man. I was like, yeah, yeah.
- 32:20Speaker 2: No disrespect, but I was just like, man.
- 32:21Speaker 1: No, the godfather of surround sound, basically, yeah.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's what I heard.
- 32:25Speaker 1: The premiere was pretty interesting. So last night was your premiere.
- 32:29Speaker 2: It was premiere in L.A., man. It was great, you know.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Oh, dude, thanks for coming the day after your premiere.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why I was a little late. I apologize, man.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Were you guys up late?
- 32:36Speaker 2: We were up late, and I basically shot this movie,
- 32:39Speaker 2: Marty Supreme, all of a fall. These crazy directors, or
- 32:42Speaker 2: crazy director Josh Saft. You ever see Uncut Gems? Oh, yeah,
- 32:45Speaker 2: so good. That director. So it's kind of that energy,
- 32:47Speaker 2: that chaotic thing. So it wasn't like a low... energy
- 32:49Speaker 2: shoot this was like 16 hour days for three months
- 32:52Speaker 2: then I went right into this so I haven't been
- 32:55Speaker 2: like drinking at all never not that I ever really
- 32:56Speaker 2: had a problem with it but just you know because
- 32:58Speaker 2: these days and I actually find my mind is so
- 33:00Speaker 2: much sharper I'm amazed I haven't gotten sick through this
- 33:02Speaker 2: whole like last couple months but last night I had
- 33:05Speaker 2: to have a couple drinks I'm kind of fried today
- 33:06Speaker 2: man yeah I'm sorry my voice is a.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Little no you got a celebrate did you have to
- 33:09Speaker 1: get up and make a speech what's it like at
- 33:11Speaker 1: something like that.
- 33:13Speaker 2: I oh man great question it's like oh here we
- 33:16Speaker 2: are oh man I don't do the, I call it
- 33:21Speaker 2: instant nostalgia, you know?
- 33:22Speaker 1: Oh, seeing these pictures like this?
- 33:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean. It's kind of bizarre, isn't it? Yeah,
- 33:26Speaker 2: it's kind of bizarre, man. This is good, because this is,
- 33:30Speaker 2: I'll say this, it's a great cast and a great director,
- 33:34Speaker 2: so we all have fun. Edward Norton, man, Edward Norton
- 33:36Speaker 2: should come on this podcast, man. He's a legend, absolute legend. Oh, yeah,
- 33:39Speaker 2: he's a super legend. He was in the, he was
- 33:42Speaker 2: in the. You ever see Rounders? Yeah. You play, do
- 33:44Speaker 2: you play Texas Hold'em? Yeah, I play it sometimes.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Um he's good and that both of the actresses were
- 33:51Speaker 1: great the ladies in it oh and his wife was
- 33:53Speaker 1: in it what's her name.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Uh erico erico erico.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Yeah yeah they got a um beautiful group of ladies
- 34:00Speaker 1: in there and men too.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Yeah like a boyd holbrook man with the blue suit
- 34:05Speaker 2: on oh that's a handsome man is he real handsome Yeah,
- 34:09Speaker 2: he's a stud.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Well, dude, you're kind of a handsome dude, like a
- 34:11Speaker 1: lot of dudes.
- 34:12Speaker 2: You are, man. Look at that. Calm down, brother. I've
- 34:15Speaker 2: seen so many people ape your haircut. Really? Yeah.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, there's a lot of freaking thieves out there.
- 34:19Speaker 2: How long have you had it?
- 34:20Speaker 1: This haircut I've had for probably, it's a little dicey today.
- 34:24Speaker 1: I've had it for probably, well, I had it as
- 34:26Speaker 1: a child.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Oh, no way. So this goes back. Oh, yeah.
- 34:29Speaker 1: And then I try to like blend in like whenever
- 34:31Speaker 1: I moved to Hollywood and stuff and it didn't work
- 34:33Speaker 1: for me.
- 34:34Speaker 2: And so then I tried to blend out. Oh, so
- 34:35Speaker 2: you started in L.A. before Nashville.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I lived out here for 12 years. I
- 34:38Speaker 1: was doing stand-up comedy. This is where I started doing
- 34:40Speaker 1: stand-up comedy.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, where? At the Comedy Store and stuff like that? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Comedy Store. It was awesome, man. I really enjoyed it.
- 34:45Speaker 2: And a whole, like, sort of generation of comedians came
- 34:47Speaker 2: out of there then, huh?
- 34:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and that was, like, yeah, all types. They had, like,
- 34:52Speaker 1: Chris D'Elia, Tom Segura.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Is that a bigger comedy base here than New York,
- 34:56Speaker 2: you think? That's a good question. You know what's so funny?
- 34:59Speaker 1: They're totally different from each other, and some people in
- 35:02Speaker 1: one don't even know the people in the other.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Because the audience is different, you think?
- 35:06Speaker 1: Just, just, it's just a total different group of people.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Like you go there and it's almost like it feels
- 35:09Speaker 1: like you have to start all over. It's a, it's
- 35:11Speaker 1: just a total different, like you, I'll go into a
- 35:13Speaker 1: club there and it feels like a whole different thing.
- 35:16Speaker 1: I'm walking into a club for the first time. In
- 35:17Speaker 1: New York, you don't think you get the love you
- 35:19Speaker 1: get out here? I think you, you'll get the, you'll
- 35:21Speaker 1: get a lot of respect, but you just feel that way.
- 35:22Speaker 1: It's not your territory, you know?
- 35:23Speaker 2: Right, right, right, right.
- 35:25Speaker 1: And you want to give respect to the guys that
- 35:26Speaker 1: that's their grounds that they walk on every day.
- 35:28Speaker 2: Interesting, interesting, interesting. Cause that's where they live.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Like if somebody came out and was like being real flashy,
- 35:33Speaker 1: but they're not in your, In your kind of club here,
- 35:37Speaker 1: it would be the same way, I think.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 35:39Speaker 1: So there's a lot of code of conduct like that.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Would you ever do Saturday Night Live? I don't know, man.
- 35:44Speaker 1: You know, it's so funny. I went and saw it recently.
- 35:46Speaker 2: It's crazy, right? It's a crazy setup. It is crazy.
- 35:48Speaker 2: You did it? Yeah, I've done it twice. It's super
- 35:51Speaker 2: dialed in, right?
- 35:51Speaker 1: I should have known that.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, dude.
- 35:53Speaker 1: I went with Chris Farley's brother. It was the first
- 35:55Speaker 1: time that he'd been back to go to SNL since
- 35:59Speaker 1: his brother was on there, since he'd went with him.
- 36:01Speaker 1: What was that like for him? He was, dude, he
- 36:04Speaker 1: told so many great stories. I wish they'd have put
- 36:06Speaker 1: him out on stage. I was like, have him go
- 36:08Speaker 1: out there.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Tell his stories. It was just classic, man. But I
- 36:12Speaker 1: went to watch Bill Burr. I'm a big Bill Burr fan,
- 36:14Speaker 1: so I went to watch him.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Did you see the last Sandler special on Netflix?
- 36:16Speaker 1: McGee performed that night, too.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Oh, sick. That was dope. Wow, yeah.
- 36:19Speaker 1: And then, there we are right.
- 36:22Speaker 2: There with Chris Farley's brother right there. I thought that
- 36:24Speaker 2: was McGee. Dude, you look like you're 23, man. It's true.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Did I look like I'm on HGH? No, no, no.
- 36:33Speaker 2: I got to get some HGH. Do you work out? Yeah,
- 36:36Speaker 2: I do work out, dude. Yeah, I do. God. Yeah.
- 36:39Speaker 2: I went today. I mean, that's what I mean.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Um, but yeah, we once works out once. Um, What
- 36:49Speaker 1: else do I want to know about this film? So
- 36:51Speaker 1: you didn't hear anything from Bob. What about like his
- 36:53Speaker 1: wife or his kid or something?
- 36:54Speaker 2: No, his kids, you know, almost towards the start, Monica,
- 36:59Speaker 2: who plays Joan Baez in the movie, she was in
- 37:01Speaker 2: touch with Joan the whole time. And I thought about
- 37:03Speaker 2: reaching out to his kids. But the thing is, when
- 37:05Speaker 2: somebody gets revered like Bob at some point, he becomes
- 37:07Speaker 2: this legend, you know, people can sanitize the past. What
- 37:13Speaker 2: do you mean by that when you say that, just
- 37:14Speaker 2: so we know? They could present the best version of someone,
- 37:16Speaker 2: you know, and not present their flaws. You know, even
- 37:19Speaker 2: a lot of the documentaries about Bob, they just paint
- 37:21Speaker 2: him as a genius. There's one documentary called Don't Look Back,
- 37:23Speaker 2: the D.A. Pennebaker one, where you actually see him raw.
- 37:26Speaker 2: It just captures his behavior. And it was sort of
- 37:28Speaker 2: right before he got too famous where he turned his back,
- 37:31Speaker 2: you know, on letting himself be filmed. And so that
- 37:33Speaker 2: was like the biggest help for me. And I thought
- 37:34Speaker 2: about talking to his kids or his grandkids, but actually
- 37:37Speaker 2: I was at the University of Minnesota like three days ago.
- 37:39Speaker 2: We're doing a sort of a screening for the students there.
- 37:42Speaker 2: And then someone said, this is Milo Dillon. This is
- 37:44Speaker 2: his grandnephew. And he looked like, kind of looked like Bob.
- 37:48Speaker 2: And he said, can we get a picture? And then
- 37:50Speaker 2: he put his finger out and he said, you FaZe?
- 37:53Speaker 2: And then I said, well, like the video game, he said, no, nevermind.
- 37:59Speaker 1: So the new Dillon, so even all the Dillons are unique.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know what that means. You FaZe? You
- 38:06Speaker 2: FaZe with the finger like that. I don't know.
- 38:09Speaker 1: I mean, I know FaZe Banks. I don't know a
- 38:11Speaker 1: lot of the FaZe guys. I know that one of
- 38:13Speaker 1: them gave CPR to Sketch one night or something when
- 38:15Speaker 1: he wasn't doing good. Whoa.
- 38:17Speaker 2: But anyway, shouldn't have said.
- 38:19Speaker 1: That out loud.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Who's Sketch? I don't know who Sketch is. What's up, brother?
- 38:22Speaker 2: That guy. Did you see him? No. Oh, my gosh. Wow.
- 38:26Speaker 1: It's crazy how different worlds are so different, dude.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Sketch him. No.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 38:35Speaker 2: No. Oh, yes, I have.
- 38:37Speaker 1: I have.
- 38:37Speaker 2: I have.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:38Speaker 2: What's up, brother? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's been
- 38:41Speaker 2: on this. Oh, yeah, he's been on that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:43Speaker 2: He's great. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:44Speaker 1: He is so creative. He has one of the most
- 38:45Speaker 1: creative minds I've been around.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Yep.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Just like he has his own pentameter of making jokes
- 38:49Speaker 1: and stuff.
- 38:49Speaker 2: It's pretty fascinating. Is he a stand-up?
- 38:51Speaker 1: Nope, he's not a stand-up. I think there's this new
- 38:53Speaker 1: thing that goes on now where as if somebody's– it's
- 38:56Speaker 1: interesting what's going to happen with stand-up because stand-up has
- 38:59Speaker 1: been this thing that people always go practice and then
- 39:00Speaker 1: they go do. But now a lot of people build
- 39:02Speaker 1: so much traction from social media.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Yeah, they pop off like that.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Right, but then how do you take that and perform it?
- 39:09Speaker 1: Is there a performance element?
- 39:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a whole different thing. Yeah. Yeah, because some
- 39:12Speaker 2: people on their podcasts are, granted, this stand-up is different, right?
- 39:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's different.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Do you feel like stand-up's in a golden era? I
- 39:17Speaker 2: feel like it's like boxing. I feel like now, I
- 39:19Speaker 2: feel like Netflix kind of made it, you know, sexy
- 39:22Speaker 2: again in some way.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think, well, the news got like very all
- 39:27Speaker 1: the same, I feel like, and it got very what
- 39:30Speaker 1: a lot of people believe, maybe commandeered by advertising in
- 39:34Speaker 1: a way.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Right, right, right, right, right.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Some of that happens. It's capitalism. So I think podcasting
- 39:39Speaker 1: was just this like.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Became this open format. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Where it
- 39:43Speaker 2: was like, okay. Also, you know that you're really resonating
- 39:45Speaker 2: in some way.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Right because it's not dollars that or it's.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Not like well especially in the beginning for the first
- 39:49Speaker 1: like four or five years you're not really making any
- 39:51Speaker 1: money so it's like um you're just doing your best
- 39:54Speaker 1: you're just keeping it and then at a certain point
- 39:56Speaker 1: like people will say well if you're not gonna let
- 39:59Speaker 1: me say what i want then get your advertising off
- 40:01Speaker 1: of my network yeah.
- 40:02Speaker 2: That's it that's a risk man yeah kind of risk
- 40:05Speaker 2: dollars wise.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Right oh it's a risk dollars wise yeah i mean
- 40:07Speaker 1: dana white was on here one time and one of
- 40:09Speaker 1: our episodes got pulled down because of um we had
- 40:13Speaker 1: Bobby Kennedy on this political friend, a buddy of mine,
- 40:17Speaker 1: but who also ended up going into politics, but they
- 40:19Speaker 1: didn't want to be associated with it or whatever. And anyway,
- 40:22Speaker 1: Dana was on and he said, what, what, Who called
- 40:24Speaker 1: and said they... And we were like, it was this.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Kellogg's.
- 40:28Speaker 1: It was a biking company or something. No, it was
- 40:30Speaker 1: like a Proton or whatever it's called. Peloton.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Peloton. Peloton. Interesting.
- 40:33Speaker 1: And dude, next thing you know, people all across the
- 40:35Speaker 1: country were throwing Pelotons into the Boston River.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Well, they give you heart attacks too. Do they really? Well,
- 40:40Speaker 2: that's not going to help them. No, no. Based on
- 40:42Speaker 2: that Sex and the City, you know, Mr. Biggs. That's
- 40:45Speaker 2: how he died. I didn't see that. You see that
- 40:46Speaker 2: he died on the Peloton in the episode. He dies
- 40:49Speaker 2: in the episode and then their stock crashed because people
- 40:52Speaker 2: thought it was killing... And they obviously had to sign
- 40:54Speaker 2: off on that. I guess. That wasn't a good idea.
- 40:56Speaker 2: That's a real thing, right, Mr. Biggs? I think. Can
- 40:58Speaker 2: we see that? Yeah, we're pulling it up. Anyway. Oh,
- 41:02Speaker 2: there he is. Oh, yeah. That's what happens when you.
- 41:05Speaker 1: He married Samantha, huh?
- 41:08Speaker 2: I don't know about this show. Yeah.
- 41:10Speaker 1: Um, what else was I going to think about? Oh,
- 41:12Speaker 1: when you think about, so I just want to make
- 41:14Speaker 1: sure that we get a lot about this film and
- 41:16Speaker 1: what I thought that was.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Yeah. What did you like about it? And you don't
- 41:18Speaker 2: have to, uh, you don't have to, you don't have
- 41:20Speaker 2: to like the movie, but were you, did you know
- 41:22Speaker 2: anything about Bob Dylan before or no?
- 41:24Speaker 1: Nope. I, uh, well, yeah, I know some of his music,
- 41:26Speaker 1: you know, I know he was like, your parents or
- 41:27Speaker 1: your mom listened to it.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 41:28Speaker 1: My mom listened to it. My bet, this kid I
- 41:30Speaker 1: grew up with, he would play it in his room
- 41:32Speaker 1: every night. He had the harmonic and everything. It was
- 41:34Speaker 1: a big Bob Dylan thing. Yeah. My, my, um, my
- 41:36Speaker 1: friend Ty, who I used to live with, uh, Yeah,
- 41:39Speaker 1: I mean, Bob Dylan was the first mumble rapper.
- 41:41Speaker 2: I mean... Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, man, absolutely. Yeah, whining
- 41:44Speaker 2: with a backbeat.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Everybody's like, you know, thinking that it was some of
- 41:49Speaker 1: these other guys like Uzi Vert or maybe Kodak Black.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Who's just a mumbler. I mean, at a certain point,
- 41:56Speaker 1: can we just say that?
- 41:57Speaker 2: He's great. Yeah, he was a mumbler. I mean, at
- 41:59Speaker 2: some point he enunciated better. Yeah. But definitely early on.
- 42:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gotten a little rocky. I feel like it's
- 42:04Speaker 1: gotten rocky recently.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Which is cool, man. He might be going through some stuff, too.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Who knows? Sometimes it's so hard to know, you know,
- 42:09Speaker 2: what people are going through. Well, he definitely keeps it
- 42:11Speaker 2: behind a screen. We don't know what's going on.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:13Speaker 2: I probably said more in this interview than he said
- 42:14Speaker 2: his whole life.
- 42:15Speaker 1: It's mythical. That'd be great if we had a word.
- 42:19Speaker 1: A word counter. For you and Kodak. Yeah. You're like
- 42:22Speaker 1: just miles ahead of him.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Literally. Dude, you could.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Sneeze and be like seven words ahead of him, I
- 42:27Speaker 1: feel like.
- 42:28Speaker 2: You said it. You said it. What about some other?
- 42:32Speaker 1: Well, I just want to think anything else about the
- 42:34Speaker 1: film that was. Was it hard to learn the music?
- 42:36Speaker 1: Did you have any issues with that?
- 42:37Speaker 2: Or how did you guys make that happen? Not really, man.
- 42:38Speaker 2: I had five years to work on it. So I
- 42:40Speaker 2: took guitar lessons with a great. Wait, you had five
- 42:42Speaker 2: years to work on this? Wait, because you auditioned for
- 42:44Speaker 2: it over a long period of time. Well, 2018, we're
- 42:46Speaker 2: supposed to do it summer of 2020. Then the pandemic hit.
- 42:50Speaker 2: Then I just kept working on it, kept working. I
- 42:52Speaker 2: was supposed to do the summer of 2023. Then the
- 42:53Speaker 2: strike hit. which is when I was coaching, still getting
- 42:58Speaker 2: in trouble for doing my, you know, getting rid of
- 43:01Speaker 2: my lisp. I'm just kidding. Oh, when you were meeting
- 43:03Speaker 2: with that guy? Yeah, yeah.
- 43:04Speaker 1: In the dark alleys to freaking, yeah.
- 43:06Speaker 2: To work on the accent.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Yeah, to work on your, keeping your tongue down when
- 43:11Speaker 1: you say certain vowels.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Down with the palace hey man you know do you
- 43:18Speaker 2: work you know.
- 43:18Speaker 1: Years ago I went to a voice coach you don't
- 43:20Speaker 1: actually talk like this your voice is actually super high
- 43:24Speaker 1: when I walked in here today Theo's voice was super
- 43:26Speaker 1: high I'm a Disney character guys dude And he kept
- 43:32Speaker 1: doing this weird thing where he'd rock back and forth.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Oh, boy. So he welcomed me, and he insisted that
- 43:39Speaker 2: I jump on his back and get brought in here.
- 43:42Speaker 2: And he put me on the couch, and then he
- 43:44Speaker 2: assumed the character we all know, that it's Theo Vaughn.
- 43:46Speaker 1: I actually wanted him to jump on my front, dude.
- 43:48Speaker 1: When people do frontside piggybacks, that's kind.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Of like— I've never heard of that in my life.
- 43:53Speaker 1: And that's when I quit playing tennis in junior high school,
- 43:56Speaker 1: I'll tell you.
- 43:56Speaker 2: But listen, you've got to be strong enough to do that.
- 43:59Speaker 2: That's a good point.
- 44:00Speaker 1: I could probably do it to you. I'm getting you
- 44:02Speaker 1: out your comfort zone, man. You cannot do a frontside
- 44:05Speaker 1: piggyback with me.
- 44:08Speaker 2: When we finish this, you know, I'm jumping on the front.
- 44:11Speaker 1: And anybody that can draw a picture of Timothy and
- 44:13Speaker 1: me involved in frontside piggybacking, let me know. I'll buy
- 44:17Speaker 1: it from you and we'll donate $ 1, 000 to a charity
- 44:19Speaker 1: of your choice.
- 44:20Speaker 2: And, you know, can I F you, you, F this? Yeah.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Like a little John Cena thing. Just for promo. Just
- 44:28Speaker 2: for promo. It's clicks. It's clicks. I'll do it on this. Okay.
- 44:32Speaker 2: All right. Then you land on that. Oh, man. You
- 44:36Speaker 2: just lay somebody on this. No, I'm going to be
- 44:38Speaker 2: like that, and then I'll suplex you on that. Oh,
- 44:40Speaker 2: right through there? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I think we
- 44:41Speaker 2: should get that. Yeah. It's that time of year, man.
- 44:43Speaker 2: It's the holidays. Come on, it's the holidays. You know,
- 44:46Speaker 2: this is the holidays in America in 2024. Yeah. Are
- 44:49Speaker 2: you a big holidays guy? You know what?
- 44:51Speaker 1: I think it does remind me a little bit to
- 44:53Speaker 1: slow down, kind of. you know, which is nice because
- 44:56Speaker 1: life gets going pretty fast a lot of times.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Do you think you're more elfish or Santa? Oh, it's
- 45:02Speaker 2: a good question. Oh, I wish I could be a
- 45:04Speaker 2: little more Santa. I'm more of a, sometimes a little
- 45:08Speaker 2: more Mrs. Claus. Like I'll start bitching about a lot
- 45:10Speaker 2: of shit. About nothing. Yeah. About nothing.
- 45:12Speaker 1: I'll just get a lot of shit. But I just
- 45:13Speaker 1: got to slow down. It's just been like a long year.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Yeah, you've been busy.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:17Speaker 2: What are you going to do for, are you going
- 45:18Speaker 2: to go away or anything?
- 45:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm going to go to Louisiana and see some family.
- 45:20Speaker 1: Then I might try to take a vacation for a
- 45:21Speaker 1: few days.
- 45:22Speaker 2: We'll see. A little Baton Rouge?
- 45:24Speaker 1: Yeah, my family lives right down there. So what about you?
- 45:26Speaker 2: I'm going to be here because I've been all over
- 45:28Speaker 2: the place. I'm going to New York tonight. Then I
- 45:29Speaker 2: go to London and then do all this promo for
- 45:32Speaker 2: the movie.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Oh, you said you have to promo for this movie.
- 45:33Speaker 1: For how long does promo take?
- 45:35Speaker 2: Well, it's coming out on Christmas, so I'm going every day,
- 45:37Speaker 2: you know. But I love the movie. That's why, you know,
- 45:40Speaker 2: that's why, shit, man, I'm trying to go as hard
- 45:42Speaker 2: as possible. And, yeah. You know, and then fucking come
- 45:47Speaker 2: back here and be with my family, be with my
- 45:50Speaker 2: new little niece. Oh, you got a new niece? First one?
- 45:53Speaker 2: First one. Let's go, dude. That's a crazy moment. What's
- 45:55Speaker 2: her name?
- 45:55Speaker 1: Can you bring a picture of her? We can't show
- 45:57Speaker 1: a picture of her.
- 45:57Speaker 2: I don't even think, I think my sister's kept her offline.
- 46:00Speaker 2: You know, my sister lives in a sort of like a,
- 46:03Speaker 2: she's with a group of people in like a forest
- 46:05Speaker 2: type thing in France. No way. You're wearing it near Annecy? Yeah,
- 46:09Speaker 2: near Nancy, yep. Yeah, yeah, yeah. In a forest. No internet.
- 46:13Speaker 2: I'm sorry, bro. I'm sorry. No, no.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Let's check in on your sister. You know, let's email
- 46:19Speaker 1: her a meal.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Let's give her a French Groupon. French Groupon. No, but she's... Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:27Speaker 2: No Groupons in France, man. No Groupons in France. No
- 46:30Speaker 2: Groupons and a high property tax.
- 46:32Speaker 1: They have high property tax over there?
- 46:33Speaker 2: Absolutely, man. Beautiful property and they don't want people just
- 46:36Speaker 2: coming in, you know, not, you know.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Just milling around for 40 bucks a month property tax.
- 46:40Speaker 2: I'm in that age now where I'll chat GBT like
- 46:42Speaker 2: what are the most attractive low property tax places.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:47Speaker 2: In America or around the world. Oh, yeah.
- 46:49Speaker 1: One of them was my neighborhood growing up, dude. I
- 46:50Speaker 1: remember our property tax was $ 8 one year. My mom
- 46:54Speaker 1: paid in cash, dude, right out of her purse. I
- 46:55Speaker 1: was like, where do we live at? Wait, who'd she
- 46:59Speaker 1: give it to? The guy that came by. Was it
- 47:01Speaker 1: a legit guy, you think? He looked pretty legit. He
- 47:03Speaker 1: had all of his buttons on his head.
- 47:05Speaker 2: He had a hoodie that said government. He had a
- 47:07Speaker 2: couple of them, yeah. She just gave him eight bucks. Oh, man.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Same thing, man. I grew up in like a Mitchell Llama.
- 47:13Speaker 2: You know about Mitchell Llama? Oh, yeah. The restaurant stars
- 47:16Speaker 2: or whatever? No, no, no, no, no. Mitchell Llama is like,
- 47:19Speaker 2: there's like two, to my understanding, there's two versions of
- 47:22Speaker 2: like good arts housing here. You got Section 8. That
- 47:24Speaker 2: means you're paying like under 800 bucks. Mitchell Llama.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Yep. Oh, that damn Mitchell Llama, brother.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Oh.
- 47:32Speaker 2: That's me, baby. Moderate.
- 47:33Speaker 1: Mitchell, I'm a program for affordable rental and cooperative housing
- 47:35Speaker 1: of moderate and middle income families. You're just talking about
- 47:38Speaker 1: alphabet city, basically.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Dude, wow. So how do you know New York, man?
- 47:42Speaker 1: I like New York. I mean, yeah, it's definitely fascinating.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Do you ever live there?
- 47:46Speaker 1: No, I just stay there for like maybe three months
- 47:49Speaker 1: at the most.
- 47:50Speaker 2: I would live there.
- 47:51Speaker 1: If I get a wife and she lives there, I'll stay.
- 47:53Speaker 2: I'll go live there. What's the ideal, you know, what
- 47:55Speaker 2: does she look like both inside and out?
- 47:59Speaker 1: Well, she looks like, probably looks like a nice lady,
- 48:02Speaker 1: I think. Let me think about the rest of it.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Probably maybe played volleyball.
- 48:08Speaker 2: Maybe didn't.
- 48:09Speaker 1: Maybe likes to be a mom maybe.
- 48:15Speaker 2: I don't know, dude. She's looking for– Likes to laugh.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Has a good sense of humor.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Okay.
- 48:20Speaker 1: Because people that laugh get jokes usually.
- 48:22Speaker 2: You can't– Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Unless something's wrong with you and you just laugh every
- 48:27Speaker 1: now and then.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Right, right. Could she do somersaults?
- 48:31Speaker 1: Ooh, I hope she can, but I'm not trying to
- 48:34Speaker 1: be some kind of pervert or whatever, but I wouldn't
- 48:36Speaker 1: mind seeing one every now and then, especially if it's
- 48:38Speaker 1: holidays or whatever and she wants to pop off a
- 48:41Speaker 1: damn bee handspring or something before everybody cuts into some
- 48:45Speaker 1: latkes or whatever.
- 48:46Speaker 2: I'm down for it.
- 48:46Speaker 1: So yeah, I think I'm open to a lot of
- 48:50Speaker 1: different things, I think.

- 52:56Speaker 1: get a wife, to be like, oh, I'm going to
- 52:58Speaker 1: have a wife and be with a wife. Yeah.
- 53:00Speaker 2: You've got to be open to it, brother. Yeah, you've
- 53:02Speaker 2: got to set your life up.
- 53:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and how are you going to get divorced if
- 53:05Speaker 1: you don't get married?
- 53:06Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Absolutely, and those are two
- 53:08Speaker 2: crucial chapters of life. Is your home, you know, wifable?
- 53:14Speaker 2: Not currently. Is there, like, shit everywhere when you walk in?
- 53:17Speaker 1: No. No, mine was organized. I've got my tree up
- 53:20Speaker 1: right now.
- 53:21Speaker 2: Nice, you've got a tree. Mm-hmm.
- 53:23Speaker 1: I got a box of gifts. There's a lady that
- 53:24Speaker 1: I don't even know who has sent me a box
- 53:26Speaker 1: of Christmas ornaments for the past four years.
- 53:28Speaker 2: Sweet.
- 53:28Speaker 1: It comes every year.
- 53:29Speaker 2: I put them up on the tree. And it's got
- 53:30Speaker 2: a little mic and a camera in there. There's the, yeah. Yeah.
- 53:34Speaker 2: She's just, bro, that's such a good idea. She's just
- 53:37Speaker 2: watching you watch.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Every Christmas it's called, it's a murder movie.
- 53:41Speaker 2: It's a murder, yeah.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Or it's just some movie about, it's about somebody who
- 53:44Speaker 1: used to love somebody and they're watching their family now.
- 53:46Speaker 1: And they send them this random box and people put
- 53:48Speaker 1: it on their tree.
- 53:49Speaker 2: They don't know. Yeah. And it has a camera in it.
- 53:50Speaker 2: And they have a camera in it. Yeah. Write it, baby.
- 53:53Speaker 2: I'm not going to. But we did. That's it. What
- 53:55Speaker 2: do you watch on Christmas? I watch. What would the
- 53:58Speaker 2: camera see you doing?
- 54:00Speaker 1: Well, we're supposed to do Christmas caroling this year with
- 54:02Speaker 1: a couple of fellows from the gym, actually. And so
- 54:05Speaker 1: we're supposed to practice on Friday. And we just hired
- 54:08Speaker 1: a cool brother over there in Nashville to help us
- 54:10Speaker 1: learn some of the lyrics.
- 54:11Speaker 2: You say brother, too. I love when you say that.
- 54:13Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. We're excited about it. There's all brothers going,
- 54:16Speaker 1: so you got to respect the culture, man.
- 54:18Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Oh, man.
- 54:21Speaker 1: But yeah, and then what are we going to go? Oh,
- 54:25Speaker 1: I watched Family Man. Have you ever seen that one?
- 54:26Speaker 2: No, I've never seen Family Man. With Nicolas Cage? Nicolas Cage.
- 54:30Speaker 2: It's a great movie. One of the greats. Have you
- 54:31Speaker 2: ever met him? No, man, but Matchstick Men is one
- 54:34Speaker 2: of my favorite movies ever. Yeah. You know, Nicolas Cage, man.
- 54:38Speaker 1: What a life. But yeah, I'd like to get a
- 54:41Speaker 1: wife maybe. What about, there's kind of a love triangle
- 54:43Speaker 1: in the movie. Yeah.
- 54:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 54:46Speaker 1: So the women's Joan Baez.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Joan Baez and Sylvie Russo. Is Sylvie Russo, was she
- 54:50Speaker 2: an artist? I couldn't tell. Yeah, she's, her real name's
- 54:53Speaker 2: Suze Rotolo in real life, but the real Bob Dylan
- 54:55Speaker 2: was still very protective over her. She was never really famous.
- 54:58Speaker 2: So that was one of his big script notes. He said,
- 55:00Speaker 2: change that name. And, you know, just, I think he
- 55:04Speaker 2: felt protective over her legacy in some way.
- 55:06Speaker 1: And so he had some notes about the script.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. The love triangle is sort of one of
- 55:13Speaker 2: the big, You know, like we do these Q &
- 55:15Speaker 2: As for the movie now and people will say, was Bob,
- 55:18Speaker 2: was his behavior towards the people that he was in
- 55:22Speaker 2: a relationship with in his life, you know, it's definitely complicated.
- 55:24Speaker 2: But my answer is always he was focused on his
- 55:26Speaker 2: art first and foremost. Also, this movie is about people
- 55:28Speaker 2: in their early 20s. You don't really have life figured out,
- 55:30Speaker 2: especially in relationship then. Yeah. Stuff is a mess at
- 55:34Speaker 2: that age. So he was kind of between these two
- 55:37Speaker 2: women in the movie and Joan Baez is a musician
- 55:40Speaker 2: and artist, ambitious the way Bob would have been. And
- 55:42Speaker 2: Sylvie is really the more grounded character. I think what
- 55:44Speaker 2: Elle Fanning does in the movie is incredible. You kind
- 55:46Speaker 2: of see the movie through her eyes because she's not
- 55:49Speaker 2: one of these famous musicians. She's really just a real
- 55:50Speaker 2: person and is, you know, deeply affected.
- 55:54Speaker 1: Yes, she was very affected by Dylan and her character was.
- 55:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:57Speaker 1: That was interesting to see.
- 55:58Speaker 2: Yeah. And the things that... Well, she was... She's the
- 56:00Speaker 2: only person in the movie that doesn't have a transactional
- 56:02Speaker 2: relationship with him.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Right.
- 56:03Speaker 2: Really loves him for who he is. And, you know,
- 56:07Speaker 2: that was our theory. You know, I never talked about Dylan,
- 56:10Speaker 2: but I feel like that's why I think he's still
- 56:11Speaker 2: fond of that relationship and private about it because... If
- 56:15Speaker 2: maybe the rest of his life could be confusing, I
- 56:17Speaker 2: don't want to speak for him, but confusing about who's
- 56:19Speaker 2: being genuine with me and who's not. She was always
- 56:21Speaker 2: the clear day one. Clear candidate.
- 56:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:24Speaker 2: Wow, that's interesting. Yeah.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I found like when I was watching it, yeah,
- 56:32Speaker 1: you're kind of rooting. It's weird because who you're rooting
- 56:35Speaker 1: for changes almost from scene to scene in the movie. Yeah.
- 56:38Speaker 2: You know? Yeah, no one's like a great... Besides Elle Fanning,
- 56:42Speaker 2: everyone comes off a little... Real. Yeah, yeah, hopefully, yeah.
- 56:45Speaker 2: Like flawed, but like in a human way. Flawed in
- 56:47Speaker 2: a human way, and a little... Especially in your early 20s, man,
- 56:49Speaker 2: you're trying to figure out your life. Oh, dude. They
- 56:52Speaker 2: don't even, yeah. Were you a saint in your early 20s?
- 56:54Speaker 1: Dude. No, I mean, I was a Saints fan. I'm
- 56:57Speaker 1: a New Orleans Saints fan, but I was not. You're
- 57:01Speaker 1: at the game, Black Bucket. I mean, I had on
- 57:03Speaker 1: maybe a, you know, I might have had on a
- 57:05Speaker 1: Drew Brees jersey.
- 57:06Speaker 2: Drew Brees jersey on your 16th Miller Lite. Dude, yeah,
- 57:09Speaker 2: that's for sure. But no, yeah, it's like, yeah, how
- 57:15Speaker 2: do you even start to get things figured out? But
- 57:18Speaker 2: that's one thing that I liked about it. I like
- 57:19Speaker 2: seeing the different, and I like that there was like, okay,
- 57:21Speaker 2: what's this relationship like over here going to happen? What's
- 57:24Speaker 2: his relationship like over here gonna happen? And then just
- 57:27Speaker 2: seeing like, I did get a better idea of like, oh, okay,
- 57:30Speaker 2: Bob Dylan was just kind of like affected dude that
- 57:34Speaker 2: he kind of was maybe better than he thought he
- 57:37Speaker 2: was or he was actually so great and they tried
- 57:41Speaker 2: to manipulate him. It was just all so confusing, you know, like,
- 57:45Speaker 2: and I think it was confusing to him and it
- 57:46Speaker 2: was like, it was just a lot going on and
- 57:50Speaker 2: he seemed like a unique person and probably like a,
- 57:53Speaker 2: secretly sensitive guy. And so for all those things to happen,
- 57:57Speaker 2: you know, so quick to him and then for him
- 57:58Speaker 2: to him to try to figure it out and navigate
- 58:00Speaker 2: what was real. I don't know. Man, exactly. And that's
- 58:03Speaker 2: something I can relate to, not, not in the relationships
- 58:04Speaker 2: necessarily in my life, but you know, you feel like
- 58:06Speaker 2: your career gets going. I don't know how you feel
- 58:08Speaker 2: about that. And you want to protect your energy and, and,
- 58:13Speaker 2: but you still want to have close, you know, friendships
- 58:15Speaker 2: and relationships. And, but at first it's very, it's a
- 58:18Speaker 2: hard thing to navigate, particularly if you want to keep writing,
- 58:20Speaker 2: you keep wanting like Bob Dylan, you know, and like
- 58:22Speaker 2: you said he was genuinely great at it he had
- 58:24Speaker 2: a gift from God at that point in his career
- 58:26Speaker 2: he said it in an Ed Bradley interview in 2004
- 58:27Speaker 2: he's like I feel like God was writing through me
- 58:30Speaker 2: and he says in the interview I can't do it
- 58:31Speaker 2: anymore he almost says it like like he misses it
- 58:35Speaker 2: like he misses it yeah it's a beautiful moment in
- 58:36Speaker 2: this Ed Bradley interview he just he says I can't
- 58:39Speaker 2: do it anymore I don't know how those words were
- 58:41Speaker 2: coming to me and wow yeah and I feel like
- 58:44Speaker 2: musicians even more than actors I feel like an actor
- 58:46Speaker 2: like into your 30s and 40s and 50s as your
- 58:48Speaker 2: face ages you can keep doing great work right the
- 58:51Speaker 2: gravitas of your life lives on your face you know
- 58:54Speaker 2: what i mean right and so.
- 58:55Speaker 1: The more you learn in life the more abilities.
- 58:58Speaker 2: You're gonna have yeah the more trauma you go through
- 58:59Speaker 2: whatever and i feel like as a musician you can
- 59:01Speaker 2: still do still do great shit but it's really like
- 59:03Speaker 2: a young man's game yeah you know yeah.
- 59:05Speaker 1: Because you have to do all that touring and stuff
- 59:06Speaker 1: as well yeah it beats you up for you the
- 59:08Speaker 1: movie kind of tours for.
- 59:10Speaker 2: You exactly you know I love you know it's funny
- 59:12Speaker 2: we do these Q & A' s so I get the
- 59:14Speaker 2: backstage experience I'm like holy shit I'm coming out man
- 59:16Speaker 2: like fuck they're gonna say my name I'm all excited
- 59:18Speaker 2: and I come out and then as opposed to a
- 59:20Speaker 2: rock star I fucking sit in a chair Oh, yeah.
- 59:23Speaker 2: Watch this.
- 59:24Speaker 1: And I sit down, and I try to give poised answers.
- 59:26Speaker 1: And just make sure your posture's okay the whole time.
- 59:29Speaker 2: Dude, it's humiliating.
- 59:30Speaker 1: Posture rocking in the house tonight, that shit is so
- 59:33Speaker 1: hard to deal with, dude.
- 59:33Speaker 2: Because I'll be backstage, and you hear the crowd, like,
- 59:36Speaker 2: Timothee Chalamet, yeah. And then I fucking take my seat. Yeah, yeah,
- 59:41Speaker 2: and then I'm poised. Yeah, you're like, oh, let's go!
- 59:43Speaker 2: And you sit down. And I sit down, dude. It's humiliating.
- 59:46Speaker 1: It's very anti, I don't know what the word is,
- 59:49Speaker 1: but Somebody else probably knows it, but yeah, I don't
- 59:52Speaker 1: know it.
- 59:52Speaker 2: But yeah, dude, you know what, though?
- 59:55Speaker 1: I think it was I do think that it was
- 59:57Speaker 1: interesting if you frame it up like this is what
- 59:59Speaker 1: it is. It's a it's a it's a it's a
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: few years in a man's life. That was a very
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: interesting man who's probably written so many songs that some
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: young people don't even know that he wrote.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: I was listening. I was like, no way he wrote that.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: And like just some relationships that he had with other
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: artists that you may not even know about.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: And sort of the first guy for me in American
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: pop culture that said, I'm going to do whatever the
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: fuck I want. That's a good point. Yeah. And that
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: was like sort of blasphemous. Like every artist through the
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: last 30, 40, 50 years that a lot of whom
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: you can't shout out because they basically burned so many bridges.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: But Bob Dylan was the first. He just wouldn't take
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: no for an answer. He just was fired up about
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: his art. And his reception.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: No, I don't think it sounds like anything.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: Yeah, but it doesn't sound corny because he really didn't
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: give a fuck. And that to me was really refreshing
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: to work on. You know, now we live in a
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: time where it's not only is it hard to be
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: rebellious about your art, but it's as much about the
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: Coliseum's reaction. You know, you think about a clip you
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: like online or something you like or don't like, the
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: first thing you do is you go to the comments.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: It's as much about how people are reacting, you know
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: what I'm saying, as it is about the actual thing.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: So in some ways it's harder now. It's kind of
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: harder now.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Because not only do you have to manage what you present,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: but you have to manage also how... I don't know
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: what I'm saying.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: No, no, but yeah, I was just going to say,
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: and also... To avoid that, that's kind of what I'm
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: doing these days, man. You just gotta like, you have
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: to bury your head so far. Even like the pictures
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: from the premiere, I'm just like, you know, I just
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: try to put the shutters on. Because it's not healthy, man.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Oh, looking at all your stuff and looking at that?
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you know. No, it's weird. No, it's fucking weird.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: And you're not supposed to do it. No, we're supposed
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: to be, you know, like gathering nuts and berries. No,
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: that's not like I'm fucking serious.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Yeah, well, no, they had that first guy, Narcissus or whatever,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: looked in the river and saw himself, you know.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: And then he's like, hey, where are the ladies at
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: or whatever?
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: And you're like, whoa, dude, what are you talking about?
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: What are you talking about, dude? You're not even that
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: good looking. Yeah, killer rap.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Rabbit dude we yeah we are our tribe needs to
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: eat make a salad bro yeah we got yeah yeah.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: We got people to feed we have 17 people and
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: our elder is fucking suffering.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Like you over here like trying to start clare clare
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: all or whatever.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: Yeah exactly fucking working on your you know um.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Yeah it's like just a bunch of deore moisturizer talking
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: about lip filler to everybody like what are you even
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: talking about.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Dude it's 300 BC what does that even mean stop
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: working on your Raya profile fucking help us with the
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: fire we need to put out in the forest you
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: narcissistic prick yeah dude what are you talking about yeah
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: I have no fucking clue no clue.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Um what about other um because you can only do
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: so many biopics too yeah yeah that's kind of weird
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: you kind of you burned a biopic I burned a
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: biopic is it biopic we don't know I don't know
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: I burned a biopic and I gotta go back in
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: three months and I gotta check if it's still there
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: and um no you're right i can only do so
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: many especially like music ones i'll be honest what are
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: some other ones you think i have a couple.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: Listen man oh ideas no you go first okay like
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: that i could do or you could do i don't
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: know if.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: I keep talking people really why do you sit with
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: him and just talk the whole time so we gotta get.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: You to say no i mean well i'm trying to
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: think of ones you could do um you could do
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: um i know i could do maybe You could do
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: a Brad Pitt biopic. You know what I'm saying? Put
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: a little of that right there. Come on, put a
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: little sprinkle on it.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: Put a little sprinkle on it. No. Maybe a Brad
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: pic was stranded somewhere. Maybe like a hitchhiker something.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: No, but you could... You could do... Would you ever
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: do Mabu, you think? Little Mabu? Oh my God, dude.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: That is fucking funny. That's an alternate time. I'm him
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: in an alternate timeline. Oh yeah, definitely. Because you know
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: I used to... Well, you know there's two ways you
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: could have gone. That's what we like to say a
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: lot of times. Yeah. That's me in an alternate timeline.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: I love him, bro. I don't know enough about him.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: I know he's from New York, though. You're right. You know,
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: it's a great point. I don't fucking know if I
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: like him.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: He could be a dirtball. But I like some of
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: his energy, dude. Some of his shit is pretty hot.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: It's very Bob Dylan, man. Just be who you want
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: to be. That's a good point. Fuck it.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: That's how I do feel about him. It's like, oh,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: I feel like he's kind of unique. He kind of
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: reminds me of like an Eminem, like when Eminem kind
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: of like. He reminds me of how Eminem was just
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: unique in his time period.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Maybe I'll do a little Mabu biopic. I don't know
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: what it's about. I wonder what the tragedy of his
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: life is. That's a good point. It could be some
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: crypto failure. Yeah, he launched Mabu coin. Oh, he's going
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: to be so pissed at us, dude. Man. Bro, no, dude. No,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: I don't know him. I mean, he's clearly killing it.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: If he wasn't killing it, we wouldn't be talking about him.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: That's a good point.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Oh, I think he's definitely super entertaining. Yeah, and we're
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: just joking around.
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: And he started that conservation fund. Did he really? For
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: that thing I was talking about. Sorry, bro. You're good, bro. Dude,
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: you should be a politician, dude. You're good. I was acting.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: But what are that? Or maybe Abraham Lincoln's son or whatever?
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: I could be Abraham Lincoln. Me or you? You. What
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: about if you- Abraham Lincoln's son? Who was Abraham Lincoln's son?
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: Dave Lincoln. That's a ridiculous idea. It was Dave Lincoln.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: Was it? Dave Lincoln. Was it really? Or Ricky Lincoln?
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: Who was his son?
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Tad lincoln oh my god yeah oh yeah go to
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: his information let's see him wow that's dude you could
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: be tad lincoln.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: The fourth son of abraham lincoln what was his uh
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: born with a cleft lip and palate i'll work with
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: tim monick we were talking about earlier i'll work with
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: tim monick on it you know and hopefully there's.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: No strike imagine his father gave some of the greatest
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: speeches and here he is and he has this kind
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: of like a little bit of a um like a
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: disfigurement or some impairment. And he's like, how do I
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: overcome this? Just say something as important that my father said.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: Did he ever? Did he ever? We could change it.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: We could just give him the speech.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: They were considered notorious hellions, him and his brother Willie.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: He was sick a lot. He got typhoid. A lot
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: of people were getting sick back then. Yeah. Oh, easily.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: You caught a Frisbee that was dirty and you were
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: down for two months.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: He went to see Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp. Oh, wow.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: On April 14th, 1865, Tad went to Grover's Theater to
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: play Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp while his parents attended
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: the performance of Tom Taylor's play Our American Cousin at
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: Ford Theater.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: That night, his father was assassinated. Wow, so he was at...
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: That could be my big scene. Yeah.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: And you finally run up to him as he's... Yeah.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: And you say something super important.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Who's playing Abraham Lincoln?
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: Huh?
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: Who's playing Lincoln? I don't know. We gotta get somebody good.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: Pa's dead. I can hardly believe that I should never
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: see him again. This is some heavy shit. After the assassination, Mary, Robert,
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: and Tad lived together in Chicago. Oh, he died at 18, dude.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: I can't... Come on.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Ugh.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: Holy shit, tuberculosis. This was a waste of a pitch.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: Pneumonia and congestive heart failure. You could do it, man.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: I think you could do it. Age me down a
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: little bit. Or Jim Carrey.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: I think I could see you playing a Jim Carrey
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: one day, too. I was thinking about that.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: He's brilliant, dude. He's so brilliant. Have you seen his.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: He went to some fashion event in like 2018, 2019.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: You see this red carpet interview. It's the biggest not
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: give a fuck interview of all time. Yeah, if we
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: have enough time. We should add 20 minutes to this
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: anyway if we can. This is the greatest.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: He looks so dropped into being himself.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Yes. I've covered a lot of fashion weeks. This is
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: the first time I've run into Jim Carrey. Wait. Controlling
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: the room. You're wandering the streets. You need a date
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: to the party? What's up? No, no, no. I'm doing
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: just fine. I just, you know. There's no meaning to
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: any of this. So I wanted to find the most
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: meaningless thing that I could come to and join. And
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: here I am. I mean, you've got to admit, it's
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: completely meaningless. Well, they say they're celebrating icons inside. Do
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: you believe in icons? Boy, that is just the absolute
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: lowest aiming, you know, possibility that we could come up with.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: It's like icons. Do you believe in icons? I don't
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: believe in personalities. I don't believe that you exist, but
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: there is a wonderful fragrance in the air. You don't
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: believe certain icons? Even when she doesn't exist, he's still
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: trying to flirt. Artistry? You're one of them. On the
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: good foot.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: Ha! He's like, you're invisible, but let's smash.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I don't believe in icons. That's good, man.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: I don't believe in personality.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: That would be an interesting guy to play because that's
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: really cool. That's a cool scene to play if you
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: could do that. Yeah, and what his crazy life. Yeah,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: what his life was like.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, he was the biggest, biggest. Bigger than anything.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: Bigger than anything, right? In the 2000s. Oh, hang on.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: Yeah and he had a show called In Living Color
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: before that that was like Jamie Foxx was on.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: It yeah he was like the only white guy on
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: it yeah right it was him yeah and they had.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: A now he's become an artist yeah now he's an
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: artist but it's just interesting to get all the art
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: out of your system you know cause some artists I.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: Think that's kind of what he I think that's what
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: he feels like I saw an interview with him today
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Sonic the Hedgehog they said why'd you do this he
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: said for the money hmm but what a life cause
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: when Bruce Almighty was coming on I mean really he
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: was like the biggest oh yeah.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: Wow What about, do you feel like you have to
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: be like, because you're kind of like the, the, the,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: the it guy, like the it younger guy in Hollywood.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: For sure. For sure.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: You know, but does that feel like, I don't know.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: And I know it's like, do you, how do you,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: and a lot of that is a lot of times
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: curtailed by like the industry. Like you're like, you have a,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: you have like, I thought you'd come with like, in
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: a tank or something.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: Like you drove over here by yourself. Yeah.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: So definitely, um, kind of, I guess, maybe against what
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: I was thinking, which doesn't mean anything. But do you
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: worry about how do you still be yourself and find
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: yourself at a time when you could be so maneuvered
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: by so many bigger pressures?
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: Listen, man, not to bring you back to the movie,
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: but that's where Bob Dylan's so influential. No, this is perfect. No,
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: because Bob always followed his path. And what's interesting about
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: the movie industry instead of, like, as opposed to the
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: music industry, the music industry, you write your own music,
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: you know, and it's direct to the consumer in some sense. Like,
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: you do whatever the fuck you want and if people
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: are vibing with it, you'll know and whatever in the
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: movie industry you do kind of have to there you
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: you got to be reliable you know a musician you
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: show up whenever you want they could be rock star
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: to show four hours late if you're three hours late
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: to a movie they got to call insurance you cost
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: a million dollars now you'll never work again so there's
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: a part of the job that's obedient in a sense
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: but the best art and the best shit we see
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: is stuff that you know people showed up for people
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: showed up but but also where they they broke rules
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: in a sense you know i was just talking to
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: you know yeah yeah and and and and So it's
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: a fine line, and I look at it like this.
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: This is my inner Tom Cruise where I want movies
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: to be seen, and I don't want to live an
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: unobedient life, but I also want at a time where
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: maybe Hollywood or a movie maker's got a perception of
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: sometimes being out of touch or something or definitely awards-type movies,
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: I want especially a movie about Bob Dylan I want,
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: in all the movies I work on, that's why I
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: did Dune, that's why I did Wonka, and I'm proud
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: that those movies, I know I'm not supposed to pat
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: myself on the back, but those movies were big, you know?
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Like in the movie industry, or the movie business, brick
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: and mortar theaters, they don't do the business they once did.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: Some of that's inevitable because of streaming, but I want
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: to put my best foot forward. You gotta give back
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: to the industry that gave to you. That's really my M.O.,
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: and that's why I'm here. You know, otherwise.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: That's why you can't be the reclusive figure that Bob
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: Dylan or Daniel Day-Lewis or these guys were. Because it's
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: not about the bottom line, but the attention isn't guaranteed
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: the way it used to be. You know what I mean?
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: I hope this doesn't sound like too inside baseball.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: I want inside baseball. You're like a real thinker. So
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: it's not like you're going to give some answer that
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: isn't traveling through your thoughts and you explaining stuff.
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: So that's perfect.
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: There's no wrong way to answer it. It's a weird thing.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: It's like... Yeah, and then... Also, I had a full-ass
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: real life before my career took off, like, in the
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: East Village in New York. So, not that my life
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: isn't real now, but, like, obviously on these press tours
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: and stuff, the days are micromanaged in some way. But, man,
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: here's the thing. That's another thing I say. Like, as
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: a musician, or as a pop star, whatever, your music
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: can be about your erosion of humanity. Like, it could
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: be about, hey, I'm driving this car, and this is
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: the crazy lifestyle I live. But if you're an actor,
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: if you lose your sense of humanity, if you lose...
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: your stink, for lack of a better word, people will
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: see that on screen. You do see it on screen.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Oh, you see him too fancy, you see him out
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: of touch.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: People are going to know. That's why the Safdie movie
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: I just did, man, he put me through the ringer. Really? Oh, yeah.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: I felt like he was testing me early on.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: What does that mean? So a director can kind of
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: put you through some fucking shit?
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: Yeah, look, Josh knew me since I was... 21. Safdie? Safdie.
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: I was 21. Uncut Gems, that's that movie, right? Yeah,
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: Uncut Gems. That's one of the best movies. There you go, man.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: And Good Time. You know, Good Time with Robert Pattinson,
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: he directed too. I haven't seen that.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: I'm saving Robert Pattinson for after, for later.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, for sure. But, you know, like early on,
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: we had stuff that could have been stunt guys on
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: this movie, on Marty Supreme. And I saw him wanting
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: me to do it. And part of me was like,
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: this feels like a test, you know? And I wanted
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: to show him. And now I feel like I've emerged
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: from the other side with no broken bones or whatever,
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: thank God. But, and Josh, I know I'm supposed to
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: be talking about the Bob Dylan movie, but Josh is
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: like- It's okay, it's all you acting. Yeah, Josh is
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: the real deal, man. And seriously, Josh Safdie, he's like
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: the modern day Scorsese. Dang, I want to meet that guy. Oh, dude,
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: you would love him. That's him?
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: Yeah. I would like to meet him. Dude, he could
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: play Abraham Lincoln.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: He could play Abraham Lincoln. And you play Tad Lincoln.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: I could play Tad Lincoln. Tell him right now. His
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: brother's an actor, Benny. You ever see, you saw the
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: Nathan Fielder show with Emma Stone on Showtime? No, maybe not.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: That's his brother. I've seen Nathan Fielder's show. Yeah. Wow,
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: that's cool. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: Wow, that must have been awesome, man. Because that guy,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: that Uncut Gems is so good. I look forward to
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: seeing that.
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a crazy, crazy fucking movie.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: So directors can do that. So sometimes it's like that.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: It's going to be a journey.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: It's going to be a journey, yeah. What was the
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: biggest journey through the... Unknown, I just want to get
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: the name of it right. A Complete Unknown Christmas Day.
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: What was it? Leave it like that.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: What was the biggest journey through A Complete Unknown on
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: Christmas Day?
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: You know, the biggest journey. Just Christmas. It's only on
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: Christmas you can see it comes out on Christmas Day. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: Biggest journey was the music and the voice. And also,
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: I've never had my phone off the entire movie. I
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: had three months. You had your phone off the whole movie. Yeah,
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: I had three months to play this guy. And then
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: the rest of my life, I never get to play
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: him again. So I was locked in. Also- you're never
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: supposed to say you're competitive, but I want, you know,
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: there's been a lot of music biopics. Yeah. And I
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: wanted to do a great fucking job, man. I love
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: Bob Dylan. I love this artist. None of this is
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: for granted. This little misconception about actors too, and acting,
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: you can have a cushy job on a TV show.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: If you don't give a fuck about your work, it
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: could be a great lifestyle, right? You're making like high
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: six figures, maybe low seven figures, and you're just showing
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: up when you want. If you give a fuck about
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: what you're doing, these are a These are long ass days. Wow.
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: You know what I mean? These are 14 hour days,
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: six days a week sometimes, you know, three months. Look,
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: I know, I know people got it way harder, but
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: I want to feel that grit. You know, I want
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: to feel it. You know, I hope people don't laugh
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: at it. I fucking really, I feel like I'm the
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: hardest working man. Um, anyway, maybe I shouldn't say that, but, uh,
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: but you respect what you do. Yeah. Cause you got to,
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: what else is the point? I talk about this with
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: friends a lot.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: Like this is too weird a lifestyle to be nonchalant about.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: Yeah. Why do this?
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: If you're not going to go as hard as possible. Yeah, imagine.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: On Marty Supreme, I'm wearing contacts because he wanted my
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: eyes to be little. So he gives me real glasses
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: that fuck my eyes up, and I'm wearing contacts underneath
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: to offset what the glasses are doing. And my vision
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: was basically fucked up until a day ago. Every time
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: I took these glasses off, my vision was skewed. Wow.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: You're like the Forrest Gump of sight or whatever.
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right, sort of. Dude, Forrest Gump is,
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: we had the Forrest Gump ping pong coaches. Same. Lovely
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: couple in LA, Diego and Wei. Been married 40 years.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: Wei is a Chinese ping pong champion. Nuh-uh. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: from the 80s. She pretty cool? She was, she's like,
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: we would train. Yeah, Wei, Wei Li, there she is.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: There she is. That's my ping pong coach. You know,
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: we train for three hours and then she'd say, let's
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: play for real. And she's like, she's probably like 97 pounds.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: She's like five foot one and she's just like. Yeah. Unbelievable.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: You're not getting a point across. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: That's beautiful. A little bit of that. Do you, um, yeah.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Did you have to, so your phone was off for
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: that long. So you just locked in and what would
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: you do? Just go to, do you sleep on set
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: or what do you do?
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: What's that like? I sleep on set and you know,
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: method acting that gets like a bad rap. People think
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: it's just like a person being a prick and obliging
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: everyone around them to subscribe to a reality. That's not real.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: The thing I came up with, I call it.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: Oh, dude, that's just everybody's stepdad as well, you know?
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, exactly. Yeah, that's method acting. I need a bear! Yeah, exactly.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: Damn it! Give me that goddamn Miller Lite! But I
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: call it method energy because, you know, you'd shit on
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: me too if I'm coming off like a dick, but,
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: you know, I just tried to... No cell phones, nothing
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: that reminds you of the present. And... Try to treat
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: it like Bob Dylan as much as possible, especially if
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: you're playing somebody that iconic. That was tough, too. He
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: didn't feel like an icon when he was himself. He
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: was just living his fucking life. So if you talk
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: to too many people, you've got to avoid earworms.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: Oh, like if somebody put something in your head that
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: says in there. Yeah.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: That's why Edward Norton, I love him. He's great. Pete
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: Seeger in the movie. But he's like, Edward Norton is
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: a little bit his character in the movie Birdman, if
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: you ever saw that. He's like a very confident, opinionated actor.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: So I would kind of have to, you know. And
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: then he caught me watching rounders one day. Ooh.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: And then he, then, then it was over. Then he
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: knew he had me. That's like, yeah.
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: If you're watching another movie, it's a.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: Movie that's like, Oh, you like rounders. And I was like,
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: all right, now, now we're going to talk. Oh, hold
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: me for a second. Huh? Yeah. That's a lot. Yeah.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: I'm still jumping on you at the end of this.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: Get ready. As long as it's on the front, brother. Yeah.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: Get ready. Get ready. Calm down, man. Get ready. Get ready.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: I'm getting you at your comfort zone. I've been out
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: of my comfort zone since I was born. All right, fair, fair, fair.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I never subscribed to it. Or I never got
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: the keys or whatever. You know the code they give
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: you in high school to your locker? Yeah, you never
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: got that.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: I remember going up to my comfort zone and being like, oh,
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: I don't think this is it. What's the most comfortable
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: you've ever felt in your life? Oh, that's a great question.
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: The most comfortable? Like most in your body, no drugs,
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: no alcohol.
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: Probably after like a sauna and ice bath type of thing.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: Oh, you do ice baths? Yeah, yeah, I'll get in there, dude. Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: I'll freaking just... I'll lay in a polar bear's ass, brother.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: I like it. I like it like that. Oh yeah.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: I like it just brisk like that, you know, I
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: love that.
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: Would you go to the Arctic? Oh yeah, I would
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: go up there. Mr.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: Beast just went up there. He went to Antarctica.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: Whoa.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: I don't know what he, but he said it was
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: nothing up there. There's not even like, you can't be like, Hey,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: let's go somewhere. And like, no, you can't.
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: I don't get how that stuff works, man. Where does
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: he get, where does he get the money? He's just,
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: he's just huge, huh?
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: I guess he just has a lot of just expendable
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: income to be that guy.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: You know, that's the other thing. Like, where I want
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: to be humble about putting movies out there, people's attention
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: are elsewhere is elsewhere now it's quick yeah and you
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: gotta convince someone to see a complete unknown on Christmas
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: day and take the $ 15 or $ 20 whatever the fuck
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: it is now and instead of watching you know Mr.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: Beast in the Arctic Well, Mr.
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: Beast has a show actually that comes out right before that,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: like a week before, but he was just, we were
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: just talking about it the other day. And it's interesting, yeah.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: And it's an interesting show, totally different though. But one
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: thing that's great about your movie is that, first of all,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: you just get, you also just, in addition to whatever's
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: going on with the movie, you get to hear like
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: great music.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great music, great, great music.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: It's great music. You get to remember, like, Woody Guthrie.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Who played Woody Guthrie in it? Scoot McNary. He's amazing. Yeah.
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: He's amazing. I didn't get— Pull up a picture of him,
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: Scoot McNary. Yeah, Scoot McNary. Get a look at him
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: before something happens to him. Yeah, and he doesn't have
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: a line in the movie. Oh, God. He doesn't have
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: a line because he's so sick. Because he's so sick.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: That was pretty awesome.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: Yeah, we had Bernie Sanders on, and he was saying
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: that— he said Pete Seeger was one of his favorite musicians.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: Scoot McNary could play Bernie Sanders in a biopic. Oh,
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: he could. Right? Yeah. Totally could.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: Dude, you could play Ronald Reagan's son, Ricky Reagan.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: Or whatever. Is that a real guy? Is that a
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: real guy? Probably, dude. Bernie hasn't aged. Nah, Bernie still
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: looks the same. He's the best, dude. He's looked the
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: same in the last... Yeah. He's like a real folk hero.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: That's a great point. Yeah, Bernie is.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: He is a folk hero.
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: Yeah, he's folk music.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and you also forget about, like, what... Yeah, I mean,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: that's another thing about the movie. You see the challenge
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: of Bob Dylan, like, take on, like, music and culture.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: There's this whole other cultural thing that's kind of happening
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: in the background, like on the television and the news
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: during the movie.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: It was a crazy time. It was a cool piece
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: of life. It was a cool piece of life. The
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: 60s were a cool time.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: When you get out of it all and it's done.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: I was beat on this one. Were you?
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: Yeah. What does that really look like, a break? Do
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: you go to a beach?
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: No. Another misconception about movies, as opposed to the academic year,
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: it kind of winds down. You're never winding down in
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: a movie. You're doing 14-hour days and you go off
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: a cliff. Then it's done. you know, in other words,
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: you don't, you don't, you don't relax towards the, towards
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: the end. Like it's, you know, we were doing a
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: very important scene and it was done forever, you know? And, uh, yeah,
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: I guess I relaxed a little bit. I went on vacation,
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: but I was beat. I've been working, I was working
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: on this for five years. This was like, um, this
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: was like, this was as important to me as you
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: going to the parking lot and spying on the, on the,
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: on the swim team of Lipscomb College. Nothing to see here. Exactly.
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: I'm just recruiting guys. Recruiting production assistants.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: But, um, Do you think you would have done it
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: more justice five years earlier?
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: No, absolutely not. Also because I had the experience in
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: my life where I would do interviews and, you know,
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: it's a scary time to come up with the internet
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: and stuff. You know, you want to get it right.
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: And Bob Dylan, his early press conferences, he was confrontational.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: He was basically a dick. And I thought there was
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: something really inspiring about that. Not that I ever wanted
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: to be like that, but I just thought it was
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: so different than how people are now. Yeah.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: Right, you're just automatically cordial.
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: You just assume. Well, you've got to be, man. A,
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: I'm not a cordial guy. But B, God forbid. You know,
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: you don't want to be. Anyway, so, but these early
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: press conferences, you know, if you're tremendously bored and not
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: watching Mr. B stuff, watch the early Bob Dylan San
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: Francisco press conferences. You know, and I just thought, so anyway,
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: five years working on it, I got a better sense
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: on the other side of it. Oh, this is why
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: he would have carried himself like that. You know, he
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: had some wherewithal I didn't have in his early 20s
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: where somebody said, how do you do it? He goes, basically,
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: I didn't want to tell anyone. You know, me, maybe
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: because whatever, the acting bone. Somebody says, how do you
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: do it? And you're so desperate for that pat on
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: your back. And you go, this is how I did it.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: You know? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: I just wonder, yeah, and you get more experience that
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: you can put into something. Like you were saying earlier
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: about acting, like you can keep doing it for.
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: A long time, you know? Exactly.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: You know, can we hear any, Bob, is that a
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: weird thing.
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: To ask you, dude? Is that lame? Like live right now?
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: I'll try it.
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: Go for it. Hold on.
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: Let me try it one more time.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: Hey, who is there? Hold on. I got to give it.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: Get into it, man. Get into it. Hey, who's at
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: the door? That's not it, dude. That's horrible. That was
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: pretty good. You got the nasality down. You got the nasality.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: Don't make up a word. You're verbifying things, and that's
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: what Bob Dylan did. Yeah, he just made shit up.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: That was good, man. He verified things, didn't he? I
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: don't think, I'm trying to think who your music biopic
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: would be still. It might have to be. What about
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: Chet Baker? I would do Chet Baker. Chet Baker or.
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: Chet Hanks even. Dude, you should do that Chet Hanks biopic, dude.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: That would be unbelievable. That's a glitch in the system. Yeah,
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: it's a glitch. Everything is.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: Yeah, everything's a glitch, dude. Jon Bon Jovi, it could
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: be anybody. Chet has a new country album that's going
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: to come out this year, too, I think.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: Dude, you've got to play Chet. Also, it would be
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: a great excuse to get shredded. I would just do
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: it for the head. Just do it for that. They'll
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: set you up with the best trainers. You'll get the HGH.
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: I could do it, man.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: I'm trying to think if there's anything else that we
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: want to ask or anything else that you wanted to say, Timothy?
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: Oh, man. No, just thanks for having me on. I'm
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: trying to think. I think we kind of covered a
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: lot of new stuff. I think we covered it all, man. Yeah.
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: I got to water my plants, dude. I just got home. Wait,
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: you have a place in LA? Yeah, I still have
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: an apartment here. Oh, you do? Is it here?
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: Over in Westwood.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: In Westwood?
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: All right, nice.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: I love Westwood. And so, yeah, I get my plants.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Diddy Reese?
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: And I forget, yeah, I go over there sometimes. I
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: go walk over there and sometimes I would go for
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: that and I would just end up getting a bunch
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: of vapes and just sitting over in my car. But, um, I, uh, yeah,
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: I would get, I just, sometimes I forget to wash
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: my plant. I forget to water my plants, you know?
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: And then I get home and it's been like a
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: month or something.
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: Your place is ready to be wifified, man. I know.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: And I always water them. I'll be like, your mother,
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: your mother left us.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: I'll yell shit like that.
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: I'll be like, your mother left. To who? To the plants.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: I'll just make, I'll like blame it on their like
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: imaginary mother or whatever.
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: I'll be like, we would have been fine. She left.
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: and I'm just pouring water on them. Their punishment is
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: the water?
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: No, the water is their, I'm giving them the water,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: but it would have been watered every day if their
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: mother had left us.
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: Oh, if their mother had left us. Oh, so you're
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: bringing out the resentment on the plants. She left us. Anyway,
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: this is getting old. Who's the mother, Poison Ivy? It's
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: just a fictional woman. It's a fictional woman. Yeah. I
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: feel like the next time we talk, if you have
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: me back on, I feel like you're going to be
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: a year and a half into a beautiful marriage, and
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: a recent father, and, and, You will have a Subaru.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: Ooh.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: But I'll take it. You know what?
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: If the family comes with that and that's what it takes,
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: I'll do it.
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: All right. You know? I'll do that.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: And I appreciate it, Timothy Chalamet. Thanks for all the
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: neat acting, man. Thanks for the movie about the young
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: man struggling with drugs. Thanks for the movie about Bob Dylan.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: And just thanks for sharing what it takes, the commitment
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: that it does take. Because I do feel that from you.
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: I do feel the commitment that it really takes if
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: you really want to take this opportunity and make the
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: most of it in your life, you know?
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: Exactly. Like you're doing. I see you doing. You know,
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: so you just got to go hard. Amen, brother.
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: Christmas Day, the movie comes out. You can go watch
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: it in the theaters with your family over the holidays.
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: Perfect. Perfect family movie. Will it be in theaters?
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: It'll be in theaters on Christmas Day. A complete unknown.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: Super proud of this, man. You should be, man. Congratulations, brother.
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: Thanks for letting me talk about it, bro.
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: Yep. Yep.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: That was fun, man. Man, thank you, man. You bet.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: Holy shit, that wasn't as ground as I'm sorry. Yeah!
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: That's front side. Now I'm just floating on the breeze
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: And I feel I'm falling like these leaves I must
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: be cornerstone Oh, but when I reach that ground I'll
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: share this peace of mind I found I can feel
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: it in my bones
