- 2:36at the Conference Center. It's say kind of a get together with Putnam County
- 2:38officials as well as officials from Kandah County in Caboc County playing off this whole
- 2:44advantage Valley thing that we've been talking about. Ashley is going to join us
- 2:46to talk about that. Plus your phone calls to tech Star Welcome. It's
- 2:50Mayor Monday, so you know what that means. We welcome in a different
- 2:52mayor this week to talk about what's going on in their particular community in their
- 2:55town this morning. Welcome, and our good friend Randy Barrett, who is
- 2:59the mayor of Winfield in the land of the General's Mayor. Good morning,
- 3:02how are you, sir? I'm doing good. Dave, how are you
- 3:05doing? I am doing fine. Before we get to the important stuff,
- 3:08one of the biggest high school rivalries in the States is Winfield. The Winfield
- 3:14Generals and the Hurricane Redskins are going to play this week in Hurricane Prediction on
- 3:17the big game. Mayor, go ahead, Well, I did talk to
- 3:22one of the next chief here at Winfield, is one of the coaches up
- 3:25there, and uh he was he seemed pretty good up there. You know,
- 3:29I haven't got to see in the practice, so of course I haven't
- 3:32been able to go to Hurricane and seeing there as I really don't. I
- 3:36don't myself, don't have a good idea. I know, me and Scott
- 3:38Edwards having had a bad this year. I've lost quite a few of them
- 3:43to Scott down there on football and basketball and different stuff. But it's all
- 3:46good fun. But uh, you know, it's it's you know, it's
- 3:51always a good game, especially in the first half, and then then then
- 3:54you never know what might happen the second half. Now or they're supposed to
- 3:58be very very hot Thursday too, so that conditioning. He's going to be
- 4:02a big thing in that all of a sudden. And it truly is,
- 4:04Mayor one of the best rivalries in the state. And what I like about
- 4:08it, Mayor is that they go back and forth U and but at the
- 4:13end normally at the end everybody shakes hands and and goes on about their business
- 4:17and which is the other team the best like for the rest of the season.
- 4:20Proving yet again while Putnam County is one of the best places in the
- 4:24state to live in my opinion, Yeah, it's a it's a friendly rivalry.
- 4:27We're not breaking windows out and buses and stuff in there like you did.
- 4:30I think probably we're used racey Hey easy now easy Now, we don't
- 4:34do that much anymore. Uh. What's new and Windfield, Mayor, Well,
- 4:40we've uh we got our new plant up completely running. We got our
- 4:45we got to build our storage building. It's ninety nine percent done up there.
- 4:50That'll close our loan out from USDA in September. And that's up and
- 4:57getting all the bugs out of it and stuff in there, so we're able
- 5:00to take on new subdivisions or people in there. We was under uh an
- 5:05order from DP for quite a few years when I was first here, and
- 5:09so that's behind us. And uh so, you know, we got a
- 5:12lot of people wanting a lot of developers wanting to build in Windfield and a
- 5:16lot of us right out of city limits and stuff in there. The city
- 5:20itself doesn't have a whole lot of a buildable land on. There are a
- 5:25few of them in there. Some of us is gonna build there, but
- 5:28most of us owntown. And you know, you get more people, you
- 5:30know, Newcord and stuff in there. There's people wanting to build all there's
- 5:34already people lived in Windfield that from New Corps and so they're already they're already
- 5:41moving in. Oh yeah, they've been there and they uh well, I
- 5:45know it was actually and thanks for having me on before I actually offered.
- 5:47No one wants to follow astal offer. Actually I got a little buffer between
- 5:50the two of you. She'll be all around Hine and forty, but go
- 5:53ahead. But uh yeah, she's what told me. There's people moved in
- 5:58from different states already here. We care where they live. Our kids can
- 6:01walk to both schools and U you know, not to high school, but
- 6:05little and it's such a neat little community here. In our schools or seconds
- 6:11none. I think Winfield was the middle school was second the state or something
- 6:16ranked, and our schools are That's why people move here. There's just no
- 6:20way around it. Well, and you're exactly right. We're talking to Mayor
- 6:23Rady Barrett of of Winfield here on Mayor Monday and five eighty Live Voice Charleston,
- 6:27Wchs and Mayor again with these announcements, as I said, with new
- 6:30Corp coming, you're already seeing. Of course they're seeing another ease too.
- 6:34Obviously Mason County, which is you know, the next county over that's where
- 6:38the plan is going to be. Cabell County's seen a lot. But getting
- 6:42specific to Putnam County, I know that there is and talking to some of
- 6:45my realtor friends enriched the realtor and some of my other friends of Putnham County
- 6:48that there is a housing shortage there and we need to do something to get
- 6:54these developers in which we've they've done a great job in years passing or continue
- 6:58I guess to do all they can, but some thing to get some investment
- 7:00into getting people to want to build houses because people are coming. I mean,
- 7:04thousands of people are coming and we just don't have a place to put
- 7:08them right now. Yes, and well, the Development Agency in Putnam County
- 7:13has got a program out that if you spend so much money in ten years,
- 7:16you get a big tax write off and stuff. So they contacted me.
- 7:21Morgan over there Stay contacted me, and I've contact all the developers that's
- 7:26already in the plans of doing stuff. I mean, I can save them
- 7:30moneys, which hopefully in turn makes to the prices, because you know,
- 7:34the prices in Putmain County of rent or buying is through the roof and and
- 7:41here's here Windfield also, So anything that can help a developer and maybe pass
- 7:46it on to the people buying a rent will be help also. So you
- 7:50know, May one of the many things I love about your town is the
- 7:54way that you folks would really play off of your river access. There's always
- 7:57exciting things going on into the Putnam County homecomings coming up, and we get
- 8:01to that in our next question. But talk about what's new with the river
- 8:03access there in Winfield. Well, we've we've built a new shelter there,
- 8:07helped with the Publam County Commission they helped us with that there with their grants.
- 8:11They got there weeks. I mean you go by there and there's always
- 8:16something going on, the amount of boats. And then we have we've started
- 8:20our river fest, and I talked to Mayor James from Saint Auban's. We've
- 8:24already scheduled our waterfest next year. We always try to have a warm up
- 8:30for the yacht fest week before. So we got it going and stuff in
- 8:33there and that and that. That's growing. But that boat ramp down there
- 8:37now are a little the boat ramp new centers, a little park down there
- 8:41to two shelters. It's such a pretty place right down there on the river.
- 8:46And then I was talking earlier about the plant, the Steal plant.
- 8:52We've were in the early stages of building a park down there where our old
- 8:58plant was at. We've got about five acres is there on the river down
- 9:01there, kind of behind advance if you know where it's at. And we're
- 9:05looking at there. Of course, everybody's building pickleball, and that's uh,
- 9:09people's been on me about that. Yeah, we're looking at pickleball, basketball's
- 9:13fitness and splash pads and dog parks and a bunch of shelters on the river
- 9:18and walking trails and stuff in there. But we're there. We don't even
- 9:22I got a picture up in front of me, but we we don't even
- 9:24have it ready for a grant yet to get submitted. But that's we had
- 9:28to. We need to do something that land. I know some people have
- 9:31been wanting to buy it, but we need to. We need to do
- 9:35it for ourselves, for our citizens here. So we're hoping to get it
- 9:39going, you know, when we start getting grant money and we'll start start
- 9:43doing that, So that'd be a really nice for the city and mayor.
- 9:46We're just a couple of weeks away from the Putnam County homecoming talk about that.
- 9:50Yes up there September ninth and tenth. That's a Saturday and Sunday.
- 9:54I think it starts at two o'clock on Saturday. We got music and all
- 10:00from two o'clock up until our headliner, Cody Wickline from he's been on the
- 10:05one of I can't keep all the teaching these shows straight, but he's been
- 10:09on there, and he was there last year and we got a lightning storm
- 10:13and stuff and blew out a speaker and that guy came there on Main Street
- 10:18and plays guitar and sang there for probably an hour and a half and underneath
- 10:24a little canopy, and it was the best show Winfield has ever had.
- 10:28And I mean the guy could have got his check all walked out. A
- 10:31lot of people would have done that. Yeah, and I'm telling you it
- 10:35was awesome. Sat down there and played and he played with Deal Harper and
- 10:39it was one of the best shows I've ever saw, and probably the twenty
- 10:45of us that was left there, it was just awesome. So it was
- 10:48such a good show. We had him back coming back in there. Then
- 10:52our our you know, Sunday is you know, our main parades and stuff.
- 10:56We're changing it. It's too close one o'clock worth the praise is kind
- 11:01of tough getting people out of church and getting things up there, so forth
- 11:05tight here. So we'll moved to parade to one thirty this year. And
- 11:09you can sign up for the parade day of or you can go on the
- 11:13public Kry Homecoming on their website and get a form and get it out there.
- 11:18It makes it easier. But we got a full weekend of activities and
- 11:22stuff in there on Main you know, the stage will be on Main Street
- 11:26and then the parade will be on eight seventeen up there. When we're looking
- 11:30forward to to a good weekend, it always is we'll have somebody on,
- 11:33maybe you or somebody else from the committee. As we get a little bit
- 11:37closer. And again at September the ninth and the tenth, finally, Mayor,
- 11:39I was in Winfield Saturday, drove through there and I saw a big
- 11:41sign in front of your city hall and signed. Looks great, by the
- 11:45way, that you've personally got some special recognition. What's that all about.
- 11:50Well, I've been after I was elected, I started getting involved with the
- 11:54Western Municipal League and after a few years they voted me on the board,
- 11:58and uh so I've been on the the officers up here, and I two
- 12:05weeks ago I had the privilege of being the president of the West Virginia Municipal
- 12:11League for a year, and it's that's such a group, good group of
- 12:15people, and it's such an honor to serve those people for a year.
- 12:18As the president got more responsibilities and stuff in there. But it's you know,
- 12:24if if you're listening, you're in a city and you're not involved.
- 12:28We all got the same problems where you're big like Amy or Stephen and in
- 12:31bigger cities, were like, we all got same problems. Yes, but
- 12:37that league can help you out. And it's it's such a but all sign.
- 12:41We've saved money for years. That was my goal to get a sign
- 12:45out there when we bought this building, which is going to be paid off
- 12:48in March, which is I got to throw that out there. Ten years
- 12:52we've had this building and we're going to be paid off in March. We're
- 12:56gonna have a We're gonna have a deep burning. Sometimes that's good, but
- 13:00but but that sign was really awesome. Trying to get people come to our
- 13:03meetings and stuff, They're trying to get the word out of different things,
- 13:07and it's a it's a really nice sign and to get the information now.
- 13:11But I appreciate Denner and the girl here does it. She loves working with
- 13:15different signs and stuff. It is. It's really nice. You've got a
- 13:18great city hall there and in great town there in Winfield too. I mean,
- 13:22it's it's fantastic. You're doing wonderful things there and I appreciate it as
- 13:26always you being on again. The homecoming is going to be September. The
- 13:28ninth and the tenth there on Main Street and Winfield will have you or someone
- 13:31from the city on to talk about it between now and then. Mayor,
- 13:33I appreciate you being on Mayor Monday. Thanks lot, We'll talk soon.

- 16:37I'm fantastic, Thanks so much for having me this week. I heard
- 16:40a lot about you, read a lot of your stuff. It's great to
- 16:41actually meet you in person. Thank you my pleasure. And as far as
- 16:45I know, you and I are not related. We are not, probably
- 16:48because well no one in radio uses their real name anyway, so your yours
- 16:53is a real mind's not. That's just part of the radio mystique. I
- 16:57guess. Congratulations on the news gig. Yeah, I'm very excited. And
- 17:02for those who may not be familiar with West Virginias or Affordable Healthcare, tell
- 17:04us about the organization. Oh, it's a wonderful organization that's dedicated solely to
- 17:10making healthcare more affordable and accessible for West Virginians. And it was a little
- 17:15bit of your background. Yeah, I've been in the nonprofit sector day for
- 17:19I guess going on sixteen years now. I spent ten of those years at
- 17:23Covenant House, and that's where I really saw firsthand what it met, how
- 17:29life changing it was for people to have healthcare they could actually use. You
- 17:33know, it's something we prioritized as an organization. It's something we're prioritized getting
- 17:38to people that we worked with on their ground level, and it's life changing
- 17:44for people. And I'm very excited to get to spend the rest of my
- 17:47working career advancing the policies that will help get more healthcare to more West Virginians.
- 17:52Now, when we are at the one year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction
- 17:56Act, some were for it, many were against it. Many were Obviously
- 18:02you're a proponent of the legislation. Talk about it and what, in your
- 18:04opinion it's meant to West Virginia. I don't think I've ever seen anything this
- 18:10significant historic and healthcare investments, unless it would be the Affordable Care Act.
- 18:15This is probably the most historic investment we'll see in healthcare, and it's probably
- 18:21will be as meaningful to West Virginians as any state in the country. For
- 18:26example, we have about three hundred nineteen thousand West Virginians on Medicare, and
- 18:30we will see out of pocket drug costs cap for them. We'll see the
- 18:37ability to negotiate drug prices on eighty drugs between now and twenty thirty and like
- 18:42ten one year, fifteen the next year, until there's a total of eighty.
- 18:47We'll see West Virginia families pay less out of pocket for a family coverage.
- 18:52And these are huge significant issues. I mean, my mother, for
- 18:56example, is ninety years old and last year should like four thousand dollars and
- 19:00out of pocket drug costs that'll be capped this year at two thousand dollars.
- 19:07So, hi, Mom, and that's really good news and set in your
- 19:10graduation. Yeah yeah, So, I mean, I think those are the
- 19:14things if people really get into some of the details, at least on the
- 19:17healthcare section, it's really hard to say, how is this not a good
- 19:21thing? And insulin, you know, we have I think around thirty thousand
- 19:25West Virginians on Medicare who had over five hundred dollars and out of pocket insulin
- 19:32costs, Well, those costs will be capped at thirty five dollars a month
- 19:34thanks to the inflation Reduction Acts. So these are pretty historic and significant things
- 19:40that will put more money in people's pockets and make healthcare more affordable. And
- 19:45you know, it's great to have healthcare, but if you can't afford to
- 19:48use it, it's not really that helpful. We have a text here for
- 19:52you, Oh You're popular. Text says so great to hear Ellen on five
- 19:56Live. She's done so much for our sitting and say over the years.
- 19:59Truly a great guests. Even better person was that from your mom. Must
- 20:03be listening moms texting text Mom, I owe you. I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 20:11throw up through this out there. I guess one of the things about the
- 20:12Inflation Reduction Act that gave the people that were that were steadfast lee against it.
- 20:19And again it political lines. I make my living on political lines.
- 20:22I get it. But one of the things that people point to was the
- 20:26cost. And I was reading a piece last week in the Wall Street Journal
- 20:30that talked about the generations their words, not my other generations of Americans who
- 20:36would be left to pay for this. Your answer to that, My answer
- 20:40to that is we pay for it one way or the other. We can
- 20:42pay for it up front and try to prevent many of the diseases that become
- 20:45chronic, like diabetes, heart disease, substance abuse. We can prevent those
- 20:52by putting more of the investments up front. I mean just just think about,
- 20:59for example, labor participation in West Virginia. We have when the lowest,
- 21:03maybe the lowest participation rate in the country. Yeah, well, love,
- 21:06that's tied to health conditions de layne going to the doctor or putting off
- 21:17things so long that they've become chronic issues. So I believe the investment upfront
- 21:22will in the long term be less expensive. And I think there's a lot
- 21:25of science and vegetary analysis that backs that up. And you talk about the
- 21:30workforce participation, and I know this is not necessarily something that falls under your
- 21:33whale house, but I know a little bit about your experience. You've done
- 21:37various other things, and you've you've seen this. This is not something that
- 21:41you can do in your organization. But how but but but but this is
- 21:44something that we have seen in the past with people. We talk about West
- 21:47Virginia's workforce participation and you're you're exactly right, this is not necessarily political.
- 21:52In what I'm about to say is people say, well, a lot of
- 21:55people say, well, I would like to go. I'd like to you
- 21:56know, get back to work. We've got all these jobs with a West
- 22:00Virginia. I'd like to go. But if I do, I lose my
- 22:03benefits. And I don't think that's the way that the system was set up
- 22:06to be, that you are doing better financially, medical wise, whatever,
- 22:11by staying home. I mean, that's that's not the way the system was
- 22:15designed to work, right, And it's an unintended consequence, and that goes
- 22:18to a piece of legislation. We're going to be working with legislators on this
- 22:22coming session our Bridge Plan. This will be a plan that is designed to
- 22:27get move people off of Medicaid. So right now, about forty to sixty
- 22:33thousand West Virginians come on and off of Medicaid all the time. You know.
- 22:37Let's say they get a promotion, they make too much, they exceed
- 22:41the Medicaid limit, they're knocked off, and it takes some months to get
- 22:45back on. Well, we hope to put together a basic health plan that
- 22:48is designed to help people that make too much to qualify for Medicaid but don't
- 22:53have access to employ your based healthcare or if they do, they have a
- 22:57five thousand dollars deductible copays they can't really afford to use. So this bridge
- 23:03plan or for successful and working with state representatives on that, this could be
- 23:07that plan that could help people move up, receive those promotions, and increase
- 23:12pay and better work outcomes while they're working towards improving their their economic situation.
- 23:19We think that's the key to addressing that issue. And again, that would
- 23:22be about forty to sixty thousand West Virginians at any given time, So that's
- 23:26a that's a big deal. We're talking with Ellen Alan again, who's executive
- 23:30director and state director for West Virginias for Affordable Healthcare. How big of a
- 23:34component of what you do in your organization is education is getting out and talking
- 23:40to different groups or social media or doing interviews like this. How much is
- 23:45that a part of it? Oh, I suspect it'll be eighty percent.
- 23:48I mean, I want to go everywhere anybody will talk to me. I
- 23:52want to hit the road, I want to go around the state. I
- 23:55want people to know who West Virginians for Affordable Healthcare are because it's so you
- 24:00know what we do to try to bring healthcare to every West Virginia in is
- 24:04it can help every single life. I mean, that's that's pretty exciting to
- 24:07wake up every day and get to do that. So I'm gonna be talking
- 24:11to again to everybody that'll listen to me, and I want to go around
- 24:14the state and make us a household name. Again. We talk about workforce
- 24:18participation in West Virginia being, depending on what study you look at, either
- 24:21the lowest in the nation or one of the lowest. We're also the one
- 24:25of the least healthy states in America as well. Absolutely, and there's a
- 24:29lot of reasons for that. You know, we all, well my present
- 24:33company included, we all like our fried foods and we all like our butter.
- 24:36The problem is we don't do anything. I mean a lot of us
- 24:38don't present company, don't exercise like we should. How much of that does
- 24:44any of that fall into your wheelhouse? And when you're out educating telling people
- 24:47there's things you can't do to help yourself a little bit, and that begins
- 24:49a time. I mean, I consider myself an athlete, and you know,
- 24:52for what it is, I've been an athlete in my whole life.
- 24:55It looks very different at sixty one than it, you know, forty years
- 24:59ago. Yeah. I am active. I'm very active, but you know
- 25:02I still need healthcare and you know, a cycle, a hike, and
- 25:07I will always encourage people to do that because when I just think it makes
- 25:11for a better quality of life. But people have to feel like doing that.
- 25:14Yeah, they have to feel well enough to get out and walk around
- 25:17the block and then the next day walk around a block and a half and
- 25:21build that momentum and you know, ultimately that will provide an inspiration. I
- 25:26think that will help them be healthier, but it takes many elements to bring
- 25:30that together. It's twenty two minutes. Actually, make that twenty eight minutes.
- 25:34In front of ten. We're talking to Ellen Ellen Allen, executive director,
- 25:37State director of the of the group Western Indias for Affordable Healthcare. When
- 25:41the Inflation Reduction Act was first being discussed. You know, political lines are
- 25:45drawn like everything else. That's just that's kind of that's kind of where we
- 25:49are. That's kind of where we are right now. And even after the
- 25:53fact, you know, there are certain folks on it would not have it
- 25:57would have not have has to have been successful in passage. If it weren't
- 26:03for some Republican buying in. But there's still a lot of people on the
- 26:07on the more conservative side, Republicans side, that still to this day speak
- 26:10out against it. What do you say to those people when when when you
- 26:15are out talking to people and you have somebody who comes up to you and
- 26:18says, why I didn't support this at all, what do you say to
- 26:22them? Well, I would encourage them to really look at the language of
- 26:25the bill, and I would encourage them to talk to people in their communities.
- 26:30I know a lot of people without access to healthcare, and I'm sure
- 26:34they do too, whether or not they know that. I would really encourage
- 26:37them to talk to the average person, go to their libraries, sit down,
- 26:41have a meeting, and have their own informal talent hall. Put it
- 26:44on Facebook. I'm going to be at the library for the next ninety minutes.
- 26:47Once you come, talk to me about your healthcare something the library and
- 26:52Martin's sorry. No. I would encourage lawmakers to do that, really talk
- 27:00to their constituent, because I think once we get through the where the lines
- 27:03have been drawn and we really look at what's best for one another, it's
- 27:08really hard to be against that because it only helps people. So where do
- 27:14we go from here? I mean, I know you're you've got a lot
- 27:17of work ahead of you, you know, and you get to get the
- 27:18information, But but where does this as not just your group, but I
- 27:22mean it's a niche one, where does it go from here? I'm optimist.
- 27:25I'm optimistic. I think I really do believe our lawmakers and regardless of
- 27:32boundaries and we feel like they've been drawn or cross party lines, I think
- 27:34we really do overall what to do us best for one another. And I'm
- 27:38optimistic that when we look at some of the language and the particularly the bridge
- 27:44plan we hope to put forward, and we talk to people who can make
- 27:48this happen, that they'll see how it will help West Virginia. And So
- 27:51where we go is we just keep talking to people and we have respectful language,
- 27:55and we keep showing up. That's it. Keep showing up with an
- 27:59open heart, an open mind, and listen to one another. Where can
- 28:02people learn more about your organization? They can go to our website www dot
- 28:07w v a FC Affordable Healthcare dot org. They can call me my numbers
- 28:15three or four three two zero two seven to five two I again, I
- 28:18would love to talk to anybody about healthcare, and I want to learn more

- 28:26again, just get out to West Virginians and do all we can to help
- 28:30make healthcare available for everyone, healthcare that they can afford to use. Elda's
- 28:36pleasure having down the show. I'm getting to know you. Appreciate you being

- 32:21is your radio handle. There's an unwritten rule in radio the back of the
- 32:25day that everybody had to have two first names, and that's why you had
- 32:29so many people named Steve, Michaels and Mike George. I don't know why.
- 32:32I don't make the rules, It's just there was an unwritten rule back
- 32:36in the day, Texas. I don't think looking out for another when it
- 32:38comes to healthcare is a priority of our culture. Our culture is much more
- 32:43like why should I pay for someone else's medical bills? According to a Texture
- 32:50Texas speaking, it's a former Democrat. I find it odd that any Democrat
- 32:53today is complaining that they do not have access to affordable healthcare. I mean,
- 32:58we were told that the socialist dream Bill, Obamacare was going to take
- 33:02care of all that. Tex says. Many of those health issues mentioned happened
- 33:07to be because of persons choices, smoking, over reading, drinking, drugs,
- 33:10sexual history, etc. Not hereditary or by chance, Tex says.
- 33:16Even Biden says he doesn't know why they named the bill the Inflation Reduction Act
- 33:20because it has less to do with reducing inflation than it has to do with
- 33:24providing alternatives that generate economic growth. It's a climate change, green New Deal
- 33:30bill, and everyone knows it. According to a texture actually offered Glance as
- 33:36the executive director of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, she joins, is
- 33:38now Ashley, good morning. How are you, hey, Dave, good
- 33:40morning, how are you? I am doing fine. Randy Barrett of Winfield
- 33:45was in the Mayor of Monday segment earlier the day Ashley, and he said,
- 33:49thank goodness he didn't have to follow you because his words where nobody can
- 33:52follow Ashley, Well, I don't. The sentiment is the same, nobody
- 33:55can follow our mayor Randy Barrett from Winfield. He is he is a gym
- 34:00and loved having him here in Putnam County. You got a big event happening
- 34:06this Wednesday morning at Valley Park and Hurrican talk about him. We do.
- 34:10So. This is an event that is not only the Punnham Chamber, but
- 34:14it is a collaboration between the Huntington Regional Chamber and the Charleston Regional Chamber and
- 34:20we're really excited about it. This is the first time at least in you
- 34:23know, to my knowledge that we have been able to host such a collaborative
- 34:30event, and we're hosting it here in Putnham County just because it's centrally located,
- 34:32but we're really excited. We're bringing together some a great panel discussion from
- 34:38representatives from each of our communities, Honey from the Caval County commission Commissioner,
- 34:45Kelly Savonia, Puntham County Commissioner Andy Skidmore, Mayor Amy Goodwin, and Mayor
- 34:50Steve Williams. And the event's going to be moderated by Tony Stroud of Marshall
- 34:53University, and we're going to be talking about and showcasing, you know,
- 34:59what initiative we have going on in our communities and how we can continue to
- 35:02foster that collaboration between each of our counties. And actually, you know,
- 35:07listeners to the show know that I am a big proponent of the idea of
- 35:12getting everyone on the same page, especially in the sixty four corridor and with
- 35:15all of these people that are coming here, and Mayor Barrett and I talked
- 35:20about it earlier about these people that are already moving in not only to Putnam
- 35:22County, but they're also coming to Cabell County in other areas as well.
- 35:27Important that we get everybody on the same the same page. And like I
- 35:30said, Putnham County is represented. You got Mayor good One and others coming
- 35:32from Kandall County as well as Mayor Steve Williams and others from Cabell County.
- 35:37It's going to be a collaborative effort. It absolutely is, and we're really
- 35:39excited about it. It has been a lot of not only is it going
- 35:44to be a great event, but it's been a lot of fun collaborating with
- 35:46Trishaball and Nicole Christian from Huntington and the Charleston Chambers. They are just they
- 35:52are super dynamic. And love having them, you know, as our neighbors
- 35:57here in Putnham County and being able to put on an event with them and
- 36:00showcase you know how great our communities are. And you know, I've harped
- 36:05up on this for years as of others, that we can get everybody again
- 36:07on the same page. The sixty four Corridor, Charleston and Huntington and Factory
- 36:12and all the communities that go along with that, be at Winfield, Barbersville,
- 36:15the different communities South Charleston Saint almost all of us here. You know,
- 36:17you've got a major university in Marshall, You've got other great institutions of
- 36:22higher learning from State to UC to Bridge Valley, world class healthcare options.
- 36:27You know, Putnham County where I and you and I both reside, starting
- 36:30to explode again, almost like it did in the nineteen nineties. A lot
- 36:35going on and supporting that we get all of our ducks in a row.
- 36:37To use the cliche, absolutely and even to your point day two, not
- 36:40only is it important that you know, the surrounding counties are are on the
- 36:45same on the same page, but I think it's also important that the state,
- 36:49you know, as a whole beyond the same page. And one thing
- 36:52that we're also doing here today in Punnham County is we're having a roundtable discussion
- 36:55with Senator Glenn Jefferies and Senator Eric Carr. They're going to be here in
- 37:00Putnham County hearing from business leaders. And one of the things that Senator Jefferies
- 37:05is doing is he's actually as the Economic Development here, He's going around to
- 37:07every county in the state of West Virginia to hear what issues and what things
- 37:12that that the state can do to drive economic development. So you know,
- 37:16I think that goes to your point of you know, being on the same
- 37:20page. That's one thing that that he's doing that is trying to get everybody
- 37:23together. And actually I talked to you and again we're talking with Ashley Offered
- 37:27Glance, who's the executive director Putnham County Chamber of Conference. Actually I talked
- 37:30to you last week and you told me that the event their Valley Park is
- 37:32pretty much sold out, which I think is a testament to your hard work
- 37:36as well as the people the other counties. But how can we get more
- 37:39people in there? Absolutely? Yeah, we are, we are. We
- 37:44are at capacity, so we you know, we're not gonna be able to
- 37:50post anymore this week, but you know, our Nicole and Tricia and I
- 37:55hope is that this becomes an annual event, so you know, if all
- 38:00goes well this week, hopefully next year anybody that wasn't able to come with
- 38:02us this year can make it in twenty twenty four. All right. Indeed,
- 38:07Well it's good stuff that you're doing there you and again hats off to
- 38:12you and the folks here and the Charleston Ay Mayor Goodwin and also the people
- 38:16of the Charleston and Alliance and also in Honeytown New Trish Ball very well,
- 38:19who's the head of the Chamber of Commerce. She's the Ashley of Cabell County.
- 38:22Trishian does a fantastic job down there. And you've got Tony Stroud who
- 38:24was actually on this show last week. He'll be serving as a moderator.
- 38:28It's going to be a great day there of Valley Park. I'm looking forward
- 38:30to attending, looking forward to seeing you as always. I appreciate you and
- 38:34we'll talk soon. Thanks a lot. Yeah, absolutely, thanks Dad.
- 38:37I actually offered glance again from the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. Fourteen minutes

- 39:07that one Tex says, was your last guess a paying customer or did she
- 39:12get that segment for free? I think they, I guess they were referring
- 39:15to Allen. Allen was West Virginia's refortable healthcare and now they don't pay for
- 39:19that. They just asked to come on the show. I don't turn down
- 39:22to anybody they reach out, you know, either themselves or say I'd like
- 39:27to get this out of All are welcome here. I see bumper stickers all
- 39:30over Charleston say that, but all are welcome. I want to continue on
- 39:36now with something a little bit different. Late last week, the Charleston radio
- 39:40market, and incredibly small and getting smaller radio market, lost someone who was
- 39:45very good at her craft, Alison Mosby, who went by Ali J on
- 39:50the air. One of our competitors. I don't care to mention the name.
- 39:52They mentioned us this morning over at Electric one or two seven. Ali
- 39:58passed away way to young at the age of I think it was forty three,
- 40:02and I did not know her well. I was at a few events
- 40:07with her. As I said, Charleston is a very, very small radio
- 40:09market. A lot of us bump into each other. We've known each other
- 40:13for years, but she always seemed very nice and very pleasant, always smiled
- 40:16on her face. And you know, competition is one thing. But as
- 40:20their morning guy over there, very good friend of mine as well, Coach
- 40:23Kid said this morning. Yeah, I was listening to them on the way
- 40:27end this morning. Competition is one thing, but life is about relationships.
- 40:34So even though we're all competitors in this crazy Charleston radio market, there is
- 40:39there, as far as I new, zero real world conflicts between any of
- 40:44us that I know of. I have a lot of friends who worked there
- 40:46at Bristol Broadcasting, which is their parent company, as well as at LM
- 40:51Communications, which is the parent company of the guys in Saint Alban's. I
- 40:53mean, I worked there for three years. All great people and great friends.
- 40:58And you know, Ryan, I blame this on the I acted.
- 41:00Over the weekend, I watched this documentary on the shock jock Wars in radio
- 41:05and the nineties and early two thousands with Howard Stern and man caw and Opi
- 41:07and anth et cetera, et cetera, and the stuff that was set on
- 41:10the air about the competitors, it was horrible. In my opinion, As
- 41:14I get older, I want less conflict. I want more of everybody just
- 41:19getting along. But I'd say that to say this to our good friends at
- 41:23our competitors over to Bristol Broadcasting Corporation, our thoughts and prayers are with you
- 41:28and the loss of Ali Jay. She was a great radio talent and from
- 41:31what I understand, again, I didn't know her well, but when I
- 41:35understand, she was an all around great person. So our thoughts and prayers
- 41:38to all of you over at Bristol from all of us here at w VRC

- 44:40He's good to be here, Delicate Daniel Linville. I had Delicate Linville scheduled
- 44:45to be on the show a couple of weeks ago. He's look me involved
- 44:46in this cybersecurity stuff. And I had him scheduled to be on the show
- 44:52last week, and unfortunately, or actually two weeks ago, I guess because
- 44:55of the special session and everything, he couldn't be here. He's gonna be
- 44:58on the show tomorrow and my first visit with our current state auditor and now
- 45:02candidate for Attorney General, JB. Mccuski, who started out in the race
- 45:06for governor but then switched to the AG's race. JB. Mccuski is going
- 45:09to be on the show tomorrow as well. Texas, dear Dave, Aha,
- 45:15just as I suspected you broadcast under a different name. Now to figure
- 45:19out your real name? Is it Hector Allen? Yes, because when you
- 45:22look at me, you suspect Hector that would see how that's that's right?
- 45:25Tex says Obamacare would have worked if Republicans such as Glitch McConnell didn't sabotage it
- 45:32to stay in Obama's presidency. Texas, Dave, I had a vision West
- 45:36Virginia could get a new airport and international airport between Huntington and Charleston. That
- 45:40airport could be served by a light rail train that runs between Huntington and Charleston.
- 45:45Coonskin Park could be saved. And imagine all the cold and gas that
- 45:50could get burned to make electricity for the light trail, according to a texture,
- 45:58Tex says, how many generations of okay, well, hold on,
- 46:01se okay, let me start with this. Why don't the woke marks,
- 46:04a socialist communist said the Democratic Party forced Ellen's mom to pay full price for
- 46:08healthcare. Tex says, how many generations West Virginias have to pay for the
- 46:12massive corporate welfare and handouts from the Justice Administration. Hey, maggots, if
- 46:17you had any principles, you'd vote against every Republican politician. They're the worst
- 46:22at spending. Fact Deck says approximately twenty eight thousand West Virginias got health insurance
- 46:27to Obamacare in twenty twenty three, at an average premium of one hundred and
- 46:30sixty eight dollars a month. Where's the Republican plan to get these people,
- 46:34our friends and neighbors health insurance? Is that the private market solution that previously
- 46:37resulted in them being uninsured? Question Tex says, have any of the West

- 47:22of police position back in two thousand. Of course, you know the story.
- 47:25He came under fire and was suspended for three days after news service he
- 47:30had invited a woman to his office after hours, something he admitted to apologized
- 47:35for. He called it a lapse in judgment, and he was suspended,
- 47:42of course, for three days. The mayor reiterated that no one asked for
- 47:50Chief Hunt to step down, and that he did it on his own.
- 47:53In fact, the mayor said she learned the decision by Chief Hunt late Thursday
- 47:59night, around nine thirty or so when she got an email from him.
- 48:05Now, Chief Hunt is dealing with some back issues, including surgery right now,
- 48:08one I understand he's been off the medical league. Deputy Chief Scott Dempsey
- 48:13has been named as interim Charleston Police chief, and the mayor says she wants
- 48:17to take time to find a permanent chief now. Scott Dempsey has been with
- 48:21the Charleston Police Department for twenty three years and again more you can. You

- 48:36you always referred to guests as my good friend. Are they really friends or
- 48:39do they just tolerate you. Well, in the case of let's say Mike
- 48:44Pushkin, yeah, he probably just tolerates me. We're not really free now.
- 48:47Actually, Mike and I are actually pretty good friends. I mean,
- 48:51you know, you can be friends with people that you disagree with. I
- 48:54don't know where we've got again, this is just old Dave Ryan, I
- 48:58guess getting getting old. I don't know why how. I don't know how
- 49:01we got to this place where you can't be friends with people that you have
- 49:06disagreements with. I mean, it's not hard. Just be a decent person.
- 49:13You know. You can get on the radio as I do, and
- 49:15you could talk politics, or you could talk all these different things, but
- 49:17you can at the end of the day, you can you can shake hands
- 49:20and just say, well, let's go grab a beer, let's go grab

- 51:46But best luck to all the area high school teams as well. Quick Tech
