- 1:01Speaker 4: I'm great? How are you guys doing good?
- 1:03Speaker 5: You look refreshed.
- 1:05Speaker 4: You look I'm you always refreshed.
- 1:07Speaker 5: I wouldn't say that I've smelled you out at training camp,
- 1:09Speaker 5: but nonetheless you look you look really good.
- 1:13Speaker 4: That's a most problem. I'm in a constant state of refreshment.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Well legy before we get to like anything else.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I know, the Broncos re signed Michael Burton, all that stuff,
- 1:22Speaker 3: But I got a question to ask you, and it
- 1:23Speaker 3: was something that.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I was thinking about.
- 1:26Speaker 3: So they enter last year at this point in the calendar,
- 1:30Speaker 3: most sportsbooks had them at five and a half wins
- 1:33Speaker 3: for the season, which obviously they almost doubled that number
- 1:36Speaker 3: this year. They head into as of today, at nine
- 1:39Speaker 3: and a half wins. And I was thinking about it
- 1:41Speaker 3: this way. The Broncos won ten last year. They were
- 1:46Speaker 3: eight to zero in games that they were favored, and
- 1:48Speaker 3: they were two and seven in games that they weren't.
- 1:51Speaker 3: And to me, this comes down to one big question
- 1:54Speaker 3: that is unanswerable at the moment. But I want your thoughts.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Second year quarterback Bo Nicks is does this mean he's
- 2:01Speaker 3: going to make a jump in year two or is
- 2:04Speaker 3: there the potential for that wall like it seems like CJ.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Stroud found in year two of his career.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Well, I think for a rookie quarterback, unlike other positions
- 2:13Speaker 4: on the field, for a for a quarterback, year two
- 2:17Speaker 4: can be tougher because simply because the one thing NFL
- 2:23Speaker 4: coaches are better at than college coaches, and some of
- 2:26Speaker 4: it is just the time they have. You know, they
- 2:29Speaker 4: don't have to recruit, they don't have to do all
- 2:31Speaker 4: this other stuff. But NFL coaches essentially take you apart
- 2:36Speaker 4: from the year before and they find all of the
- 2:41Speaker 4: things you don't like and they make you do those
- 2:43Speaker 4: things as much as possible. So that that will be
- 2:46Speaker 4: bo Nix's challenge this year.
- 2:50Speaker 6: And I you know, part of me thinks, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 6: the Broncos obviously, Sean Payton's been around the league a
- 2:56Speaker 6: long time. They know this, and I think that's why
- 3:00Speaker 6: initially in free agency, I think some people outside of
- 3:04Speaker 6: Denver were surprised they went defense so hard because they
- 3:08Speaker 6: know it probably be at least initially, the first half
- 3:13Speaker 6: of the season could be a little rougher for bo
- 3:16Speaker 6: Nicks in terms of dealing with defenses are giving him.
- 3:21Speaker 6: And that will be his adjustment the defense's reaction. And
- 3:26Speaker 6: we could see it at the end of the season
- 3:28Speaker 6: a little bit too, as people got more and more
- 3:32Speaker 6: data on him. So that will be his challenge, Like
- 3:35Speaker 6: every quarterback is responding to the new things you're getting
- 3:41Speaker 6: because defensive coordinators think you don't like it very much
- 3:44Speaker 6: if we do this. So that's his challenge, and I
- 3:48Speaker 6: think that's the you know, when I look at last year,
- 3:51Speaker 6: they feasted on a bad division, the NFC South, and
- 3:57Speaker 6: they really struggled to beat you know, the good teams
- 4:01Speaker 6: as it were. You know, they had Kansas City on
- 4:04Speaker 6: the ropes, you know, other than the block field goal.
- 4:08Speaker 6: I thought that was their best game against somebody, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 6: very good. Yeah, and I think that's their issue overall.
- 4:16Speaker 5: So you're saying, basically, Okay, well, now he's a big boy,
- 4:19Speaker 5: he's playing big boy football and he's going to see
- 4:22Speaker 5: big boy defense trying to mess him up type of stuff. Yeah.
- 4:27Speaker 6: I mean they all see it. I mean, just look
- 4:30Speaker 6: at all of the quarterbacks. You know, Mahomes is such
- 4:34Speaker 6: an anomaly, but most you know, justin Herbert, I mean,
- 4:39Speaker 6: most of your guys who had really good or played
- 4:43Speaker 6: a lot as rookies do have that little area in
- 4:47Speaker 6: their second year where they're suddenly they're finding you know,
- 4:51Speaker 6: a lot of things in front of them defensively that
- 4:55Speaker 6: they don't like very much. Because again, people spent weeks
- 4:59Speaker 6: and months taking their game apart and seeing what they
- 5:03Speaker 6: really don't like to do.
- 5:05Speaker 4: I heard you.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Myself, hang on, hang on, hang on, right this again?
- 5:12Speaker 7: Go ahead, vic I heard you say something with the
- 5:14Speaker 7: Afternoon Boys, Andy and Nate, and I thought it was
- 5:17Speaker 7: fascinating and you made such a great point. I want
- 5:20Speaker 7: you to say it again. A lot of people wondering
- 5:22Speaker 7: if the Broncos would exercise number twenty on a running back, right,
- 5:28Speaker 7: a running back in the first round a need. But
- 5:31Speaker 7: your point was, well, have they shown the ability to
- 5:35Speaker 7: give a running back and enough carries, enough work to
- 5:41Speaker 7: spend a first round pick on a running back? Can
- 5:43Speaker 7: you expand on that point? Because it made total sense
- 5:45Speaker 7: when I heard it the first time.
- 5:48Speaker 4: It's a miracle that made total sense.
- 5:49Speaker 6: But you know, I think vic all I was saying,
- 5:54Speaker 6: was you know we heard so often last year from
- 5:59Speaker 6: the head call from everybody. Run games important, Gonna get
- 6:02Speaker 6: people involved, you know, gonna do this and that, and
- 6:07Speaker 6: you know, I believe that they know the role of
- 6:11Speaker 6: the run game. But if you're gonna use the twentieth
- 6:14Speaker 6: pick of the draft on a running back, you better
- 6:18Speaker 6: use them like the Eagles. You say, Kwan Barkley, I mean,
- 6:21Speaker 6: he better be involved with everything. Otherwise you left really
- 6:28Speaker 6: good players on the board who would have bigger roles
- 6:32Speaker 6: on your team. And to me, if the Broncos can
- 6:37Speaker 6: and you know, if Genti is, by some miracle of
- 6:41Speaker 6: miracles available at twenty, that's a running back worth the
- 6:45Speaker 6: twentieth pick of the draft. But you better use them
- 6:49Speaker 6: like you took them with the twentieth pick of the draft.
- 6:51Speaker 4: That's my only question with them.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Is is if you're gonna do it, commit to it,
- 6:58Speaker 6: and you know them in the pass and get do
- 7:01Speaker 6: whatever you need to do to involve that player, because
- 7:05Speaker 6: I think it would be silly to use a running
- 7:08Speaker 6: a pick of twenty and a running back and then
- 7:12Speaker 6: give them nine carries a game and you know and
- 7:16Speaker 6: eighteen snaps.
- 7:18Speaker 4: To me, that's not value in the first round.
- 7:21Speaker 6: You want to do that in the third of the fourth,
- 7:23Speaker 6: that's great, that's a productive player. I just the twentieth
- 7:27Speaker 6: pick should be on a player you're gonna use and
- 7:30Speaker 6: have a role for. I mean, Sean Payton talks about
- 7:33Speaker 6: the vision of players. Whoever you take it twenty, I
- 7:38Speaker 6: think your vision is he plays an awful lot.
- 7:41Speaker 3: JEFFLAKEWILLTHESPN dot com with us. I know that everybody, especially
- 7:45Speaker 3: when you're picking later in the first round, like in
- 7:46Speaker 3: the twenties, as the Broncos are it's best player available,
- 7:51Speaker 3: and that is mostly true. But if the best players
- 7:54Speaker 3: a quarterback, they aren't taking one of those. What positions
- 7:57Speaker 3: do you think are on their minds for twenty Like
- 7:59Speaker 3: is a wide receivers still in play at twenty?
- 8:02Speaker 4: Oh yeah, certainly. I think a wide receiver would be
- 8:05Speaker 4: a player.
- 8:05Speaker 6: I think could you know if one of the best
- 8:08Speaker 6: corners was in play.
- 8:10Speaker 4: You jump there?
- 8:11Speaker 6: I mean you you know, you jump at positions like
- 8:14Speaker 6: you can never have enough corners. We saw last year
- 8:18Speaker 6: Riley Moss gets hurt and suddenly it's it's very difficult
- 8:22Speaker 6: for them to play defense the way they want to.
- 8:25Speaker 6: So you know, corner, to me is always a position
- 8:28Speaker 6: you're you're hunting. Defensive line is very deep in this draft.
- 8:33Speaker 6: I'll tell you the quirk of picking twenty this year.
- 8:36Speaker 6: And you guys have heard me say this, but you know,
- 8:39Speaker 6: there are never thirty two first round grades in any
- 8:42Speaker 6: draft ever, And this year the issue is this draft
- 8:48Speaker 6: is strong and rounds two through four, two through five
- 8:52Speaker 6: in the first round. I have talked, I've spoken to
- 8:56Speaker 6: people with some teams that only have four team fifteen
- 9:02Speaker 6: first round grades.
- 9:03Speaker 4: That's not a lot.
- 9:04Speaker 6: You know, usually you're in the high teens, low twenties,
- 9:09Speaker 6: UH for a good first round. So if the Broncos
- 9:14Speaker 6: don't have any first round grades left on the board
- 9:19Speaker 6: as the picks go to sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, there's a
- 9:23Speaker 6: good chance they try to move out.
- 9:26Speaker 4: But usually usually at.
- 9:28Speaker 6: Twenty you're gonna have one or two guys you still
- 9:31Speaker 6: have graded in the first round still on the board,
- 9:34Speaker 6: because you know, everybody doesn't agree on what the first
- 9:38Speaker 6: round picks are, so they're right on that edge of
- 9:42Speaker 6: will there really be a player.
- 9:43Speaker 4: They have a first round grade on still there.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Russ thoughts, well.
- 9:50Speaker 6: You know he's in the one year deal zone, and
- 9:53Speaker 6: I think the Giants.
- 9:54Speaker 5: I mean, he found a gig. Jeff given a gig.
- 10:00Speaker 6: I know it's popular just to say the guy can't
- 10:02Speaker 6: play football here in this town, but he you know,
- 10:04Speaker 6: he played pretty well for the Steelers last year. He's
- 10:08Speaker 6: he's in the he's in the middle tier of quarterbacks
- 10:10Speaker 6: in the league. And that you know, the Giants have
- 10:13Speaker 6: a regime that's like in trouble. You know, you got
- 10:16Speaker 6: a head coach that's in trouble. You had a GM
- 10:19Speaker 6: that's in trouble.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Uh.
- 10:22Speaker 6: I think it's really hard for those guys to draft
- 10:24Speaker 6: a rookie quarterback for the next regime, you know, after
- 10:28Speaker 6: they get fired. So I think I think everybody's trying
- 10:31Speaker 6: to make everybody happy.
- 10:33Speaker 4: In New York. You give a you give.
- 10:35Speaker 6: A coaching staff on the ropes a veteran quarterback option
- 10:39Speaker 6: or two which they have, and if if it looks
- 10:42Speaker 6: like you should take the quarterback at three, you still
- 10:45Speaker 6: do it, and you tell those veterans to to help
- 10:48Speaker 6: them out. And both Winston and Wilson are are good
- 10:52Speaker 6: at helping young players. I mean, Russell handed himself here
- 10:57Speaker 6: with Stidham great and everybody I know in Pitt's Burg,
- 11:01Speaker 6: uh says he handled himself when he wasn't starting last year,
- 11:05Speaker 6: handled himself very well. So I know he's a it's
- 11:08Speaker 6: a popular you know pinata to swing at here.
- 11:12Speaker 4: But the guy can still play some football.
- 11:15Speaker 6: He holds the ball too long sometimes, but uh, he
- 11:19Speaker 6: still plays better than a lot of other guys starting.
- 11:21Speaker 3: That's one of the things that we were talking about
- 11:23Speaker 3: the other day was do you think that that that
- 11:25Speaker 3: the move of Russell Wilson and Jamis Winston takes a
- 11:28Speaker 3: quarterback off the board for the Giants at three.
- 11:30Speaker 7: No chance they take good?
- 11:32Speaker 5: No chance?
- 11:33Speaker 4: What's that?
- 11:33Speaker 7: I say? No chance they take Shador at three?
- 11:36Speaker 6: Well, I mean logically you're looking at what they've done
- 11:40Speaker 6: and again you've got a coat, You've got a regime,
- 11:44Speaker 6: a football regime there that isn't going to be excited
- 11:48Speaker 6: to set the table for the next group with a
- 11:51Speaker 6: with a franchise quarterback prospect. While they're getting well, they're
- 11:55Speaker 6: getting bounced, they're trying to hang on. And I think
- 11:58Speaker 6: that's the toughest part in the NFL is if you're
- 12:02Speaker 6: not you know, in sort of the right timing to
- 12:06Speaker 6: take a quarterback. I mean, how good is that for
- 12:09Speaker 6: Shudu or if they take him anyway, you got to
- 12:11Speaker 6: regime in trouble. I mean, it's just not a great
- 12:15Speaker 6: situation too to make him a good player. I mean,
- 12:20Speaker 6: but you know, my opinion is nothing you do should
- 12:24Speaker 6: ever preclude you from taking the best player that's looking
- 12:28Speaker 6: at you, you know, on draft day.
- 12:31Speaker 4: And does it eliminate them taking him? I don't think so.
- 12:36Speaker 4: But logically you would say why would you do that?
- 12:39Speaker 6: And I don't think that would be awesome for shudor
- 12:43Speaker 6: Sanders either. You know, this coach and this GM aren't
- 12:47Speaker 6: even the guys you're going to move forward with if
- 12:50Speaker 6: because you know, how how invested are they going to
- 12:54Speaker 6: be in making you a great player down the road
- 12:57Speaker 6: when they're just worried about right now?
- 13:00Speaker 2: Where do you see?
- 13:01Speaker 7: We're in your draft? And I know you haven't formulated
- 13:04Speaker 7: the final version yet, but how far do you see
- 13:07Speaker 7: Schador falling?
- 13:09Speaker 6: Well, I'm going to have the quarterbacks lower than most
- 13:13Speaker 6: people do anyway, because that's I put them where they
- 13:15Speaker 6: belong and where they're graded. But I don't think he's
- 13:20Speaker 6: you know, this notion he's he's not one of the
- 13:23Speaker 6: two best quarterback prospects in this draft is just.
- 13:27Speaker 4: It's silly. I don't even entertain it.
- 13:31Speaker 6: You know, he's got like all players, he's got things
- 13:34Speaker 6: the NFL is worried about. But I don't think he
- 13:39Speaker 6: should go much past six or seven in my book.
- 13:42Speaker 6: You know, somebody's asleep at the wheel if you're you know, like,
- 13:49Speaker 6: I don't think he'll be in my top six or
- 13:51Speaker 6: seven players.
- 13:52Speaker 4: But he's getting drafted in the top six or seven slots.
